Tralee, Get Ready for Something Special – Forge Woodfired Pizza Has Arrived!

The wait is over! Forge Woodfired Pizza has officially opened its doors on Ashe Street, right beside the Courthouse. Housed in the former Chopins Restaurant, this exciting new spot brings a fresh and mouthwatering experience to Tralee’s food scene.

Behind this culinary venture is Greg O’Mahony, a seasoned five-star chef with an impressive background, having worked in renowned restaurants like Chapter One and Le Pichet. Now, with successful Forge Pizza locations in Dublin, Castlegregory, and Fenit, Greg is thrilled to plant deeper roots in Kerry, where his family originally hails from.

Greg’s passion for authentic flavors and top-quality ingredients shines through every pizza made in his signature wood-fired oven.

“I’ve been dreaming of opening a permanent spot like this for a while,

and lighting up the oven here in Tralee feels amazing,” Greg shared enthusiastically. “We’ve had a whirlwind summer in Castlegregory, and I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who made this happen so quickly. There’s more in store for this space, so stay tuned!”

The hand-crafted Sourdough pizzas reflect Forge’s commitment to excellence, blending bold flavors and locally-sourced ingredients to create a truly unique dining experience. Expect crispy, perfectly blistered crusts and toppings that take traditional pizza to the next level.

Echoes in the Wind

About the book:

Woodfired Pizza will be open from 5 PM, Wednesday to Sunday, inviting locals and visitors alike to indulge in memorable pizza nights. The journey kicked off with a special tasting night last Wednesday , where a few friends and family gathered to sample the delicious menu. Now it’s your turn—stop by, enjoy the warm hospitality, and experience what makes Forge a game-changer in Tralee’s food scene. This is just the beginning... and Greg hints that more exciting surprises are on the way! Keep an eye out!

Echoes in the wind is a selection of poems inspired by past experiences and the importance of living in the moment as well. It’s memories that still echoes with the wind that whistles through the night. Leaving moments to think back on those who travel the roads with us, who are longer with us now. The book reflects on grief and absence. Though still the encouragement to look forward to brighter days ahead. It emphasises keeping the candles burning in remembrance of those dear to us.

About the author:

Mark Flanagan a Tralee man who works as a healthcare assistant, married to his wife Linda a Zumba dance instructor with two daughters. He leads a humble life., finding joy in the present and the little things. He enjoys travel and the peace of a good coffee in a quiet space to day dream on the making of a poem.

Maharees Conservation Association Wins Big at National Lottery Good Causes Awards 2024

A Kerry-based organisation has been honoured with the top prize in the Heritage category at this year’s National Lottery Good Causes Awards, earning a €10,000 prize. The Maharees Conservation Association, founded in 2016, works tirelessly to preserve and protect the unique coastline of the Maharees on the Dingle Peninsula through community-led climate adaptation. Known for its pristine blue-flag beaches and iconic sand dunes, the Maharees has long attracted attention for its beauty. However, strong Atlantic swells and harsh winter winds have threatened the fragile dune system. The volunteerrun organisation collaborates with residents, visitors, NGOs, state

agencies, and the local authority to safeguard these natural habitats and support the local community’s heritage.

In 2021, the group received funding from the National Lottery Good Causes, which helped launch the Maharees Heritage Trail. This self-guided, mobile-accessible trail highlights 20 points of interest, offering a deep dive into the region’s natural, cultural, and built heritage through imagery, videos, audio, and text content.

The organisation’s commitment to environmental conservation and willingness to share its expertise with other coastal communities impressed the award judges. Winning the Heritage category

award in 2024 celebrates their dedication to preserving this unique area and showcases how local efforts can make a lasting impact.

The Maharees Conservation Association stands as an inspiring

example of how community action and environmental stewardship can come together to protect both nature and culture for future generations.

Quinn Family to honour Katie with Memorial trophy

The Quinn family will present the Katie Quinn Tarmac Queen Perpetual Cup at the Kerry Winter Rally on November 3, honoring Katie Quinn, who tragically passed away on June 13, 2023. The trophy will go to the highest-placed allfemale crew in the event, hosted by Kerry Motor Club.

Three female crews are currently registered. Katie’s sisters, Michelle and Tina, will drive her Honda Civic. Grainne Caplice and Lauren Doherty will compete in a Vauxhall Corsa, while Cathrine Walsh and Angiee Michniewicz will also race in a Honda Civic.

Katie’s passing has deeply affected her family, friends, and the Kerry motorsport community. Born into a motorsport-loving family, Katie was immersed in rallying from a young age, following in the footsteps

of her father, Mike Quinn. Her journey began in Hot-rod racing, and she later became a navigator alongside Mike. In 2017, Katie debuted as a driver in the Garda Mini Stages Rally, finishing strong in her class. By 2018, she partnered with Ciara O’Connell, and in 2019, the duo were crowned Top Part West Coast Ladies Champions. Another milestone came in 2021 when Katie teamed up with her sister Michelle in the Kerry Winter Rally. In 2023, Katie formed a new partnership with her cousin Caz Somers, securing

her second West Coast Rally Championship Ladies title. Official Rally Launch: The Rose Hotel Kerry Winter Stages Rally launch takes place at 3 pm on October 20 at the event headquarters. The rally forms part of the Top Part West Coast Rally Championship, Kingdom of Kerry Rally Championship, and the

IPS Packaging Southern 4 Rally Championship.

This year’s rally will be held in the Castleisland area, with the Service Park located at Munster Technological University’s north campus in Tralee. Local competitors and members of the organizing committee will attend the launch.

Minister Foley announces new classroom for Coolick National School

Minister for Education and Kerry T.D. Norma Foley has today announced that initial project approval has been given for a new classroom for Coolick National School.

The school in Kilcummin has recently been granted an additional mainstream class teacher, so this new classroom will help to provide additional accommodation for its students.

Minister Foley said: “I welcome the provision of additional classroom. This is testament to the great work of staff and the growth and development of the school. I look forward to seeing the works progressing in a timely fashion.”

Coolick National School was founded in 1870, making it one of the oldest primary schools in Kerry. In recent years, the school has also been approved for a new mainstream classroom, a special education

teaching room, a classroom for children with special educational needs, the reconfiguration of smaller classrooms and additional sanitary facilities.

John Ross Jewellers in Tralee is celebrating this venerable occasion by giving its customers gifts!

Did you know?

John Ross Jewellers in Castle St, Tralee Co. Kerry has been chosen for a major conservation project; Project Castle St, ‘Looking to The Past for The Future’, part funded by the Heritage Council.

John Ross Jewellers is believed to be the first shop in Tralee to receive electrification in 1929.

The landmark shop, much beloved of Kerry people for generations, and a whole tranche of new customers given its’ online presence, is run by cousins Heather O’Sullivan and Sandrene Brassil, whose Great Grandfather, John Ross, founded the business in 1899.

To mark this historic milestone, they have curated a bespoke line of free gifts for each customer who spends over €50.( WHILE STOCKS LAST!) Heather says.

“125 years in business is truly a hugely significant occasion for all our family. It’s a lovely link to the past and a bridge to the future and we want to celebrate, say thank you to our Great Grandfather, who had such vision and talent, and our lovely customers, who together with generations of their ancestors have supported us over the decades”.

“Knowing that we are using the same door handles, displaying the same areas as our ancestors and our customers ancestors have touched and used means so much to us”.

“I was reading the deeds of the building here in Lower Castle Street recently and the document has some beautiful wording. It states that John Ross bought the building for his successors “forever”. What a wonderful gift to his future family. His hard work continues to support us over a century later”.

“We have a fabulous array of glittering gems and all the up-to-date trends so we’re delighted to be able to give a little back to the customers who are so incredibly loyal to us”.

Happy Birthday John Ross!
