LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES PERSONAL INJURY AND THE INJURIES BOARD Stacy had a nasty fall when she was walking down the street recently and was taken to A&E. When she inspected the area after getting her treatment in the hospital she discovered that the footpath was all broken up and in bad need of repair. Stacy was wondering how to start a Personal Injury claim and had heard of the Personal Injury Assessment Board so let’s take a look at the role they play. The Personal Injuries Assessment Board (PIAB), is an independent statutory body set up under the Personal Injuries Assessment Board Act 2003. All personal injury claims in Ireland (except for cases involving medical negligence) must be submitted to PIAB and they provide assessment for liability in road traffic, workplace or public liability accidents. Stacy has a lot of costs incurred from her treatment and has all the receipts from the Hospital, X rays, MRI Scans, Physiotherapist and from a specialist from Cork that she had to attend so she needs to keep those so her Solicitor can send them to the PIAB along with any other receipts Stacy for expenses resulting from her fall. Claims are assessed using the medical evidence you provide from your doctor and, if necessary, a report provided by an independent doctor appointed by PIAB. The PIAB go by a specific set of guidelines called The Book of Quantum, which are guidelines for any compensation given. The person or organizations that Stacy claims are responsible for her injuries through negligence are called the Respondent. It is important to notify the Respondent within two months of the accident; while this may not affect her application to the PIAB it may affect her case later if it goes before the Courts. When the PIAB makes its assessment, Stacy, as the claimant or Applicant has 28 days to decide whether she will accept or reject the award. The respondent has 21 days to accept or reject the assessment. If both parties accept the assessment, PIAB will issue Order to pay to the Respondent. If either Stacy or the Respondent rejects the assessment, PIAB will issue Stacy with an Authorisation allowing her to take her claim to court. LEGAL QUIP: The purpose of the law is to prevent the strong from always having their way.

University Tralee? its getting closer! On Thursday 8th March 2018 a very significant milestone in Irish higher education was reached with the enactment of the Technological Universities Bill into legislation. The importance of this legislation is reflected in the fact that one of the higher education goals specified in the Action Plan for Education 2018, was to enact the Technological Universities Bill and open the first TU in September 2018. Cork Institute of Technology and the Institute of Technology Tralee have been working towards achieving Technological University designation and the creation of the Munster Technological University (MTU) since 2013. Both Institutes are committed to achieving Technological University status and plan to register students in the new Munster Technological

University in September 2019. Lionel Alexander, Chair of the Governing Body at IT Tralee and Bob Savage, Chair of the Governing Body at CIT stated that; “MTU will bring considerable benefits to the staff and students, as well as delivering benefits for the citizens and economy of the region. The creation of the MTU will help to position Munster and the South West as the next major region outside of Dublin, significantly boosting and enabling regional growth and development. The MTU will build on the unique strengths of both founding Institutions and will be a catalyst for the development of the Irish Higher Education system”. Welcoming the enactment of the legislation Dr Oliver Murphy, President of IT Tralee said: “This is a historic day

for us. This legislation is a key enabler facilitating us to deliver on our commitment to transform Irish Higher Education. We believe Munster Technological University presents a once in a generation opportunity to bring about a change that will enrich and improve the social, academic, and economic vibrancy of the region and beyond”. Resources and structures have been put in place to successfully deliver the programme of change required to make the MTU a reality and the project has received dedicated funding from the HEA to facilitate this work. The MTU Project Office has been established to oversee the successful delivery of the

L-R: Dr Oliver Murphy, President of ITT and Dr Barry O’Connor, President of CIT

project.

We are in the process of buying our first home and looking at various houses. We have been advised that we will require a property survey. Can you explain the requirements? Steve & Laura, Tralee It is extremely important to have the property inspected. Buying your home will probably be your greatest financial commitment. A property survey is an in-depth visual inspection of the house, including the services, the garden and any other buildings on the site, such as sheds and garage. Planning Permission and Building Regulations will be reviewed and any issues noted. All properties, including extensions require a Certificate/Opinion of Compliance with both Planning and Building Regs. Energy and insulation will also be commented on. It is essential to know and understand the amount of work required to bring the house up to comfortable living conditions, especially with older properties. You should already have BER certificate from the vendor – this is mandatory. You will receive a written report that notes and advises on any potential issues and necessary repairs. In addition, the report will describe the property and its overall condition. You may also require a Declaration of Identity. This relates to the boundaries of the property, which are measured to confirm compliance with Land Registry Maps. We at JS Design – Architectural Solutions also like to consider the development potential of the property. We feel it is important to assess the house and let you know if it has enough space to meet your needs. If we feel it does not, we will also advise on what you can do to the property so that it will meet your brief. Some work to an existing house can be planning exempt.

FOR IT IS WRITTEN takes us on a journey through the Bible, weaving the story of the Old and New Testaments together, through the common thread that is Jesus Christ. The observation of St Augustine that “the New is in the Old concealed: the Old is in the New revealed” provides a fitting summary of the book. In exploring connections between the Old and the New, Michael , the author, presents the overarching story of the Bible –the love of God in the person of Jesus Christ for the world-in an easy to read manner, which takes one through the three major divisions of the Old Testament in the light of the New Testament gospels and epistles, and the life of Christ. The book closes with perspectives on prayer and praying, as presented in the Bible, and engages the reader with a mixture of information, history, reflection and spiritual application. Michael has asked well known Parish Priest of St Brendans Rev Fr Padraig Walsh to launch his book on Saturday March 24th in Our Lady & St Brendans Pastoral Centre at 7.30pm .All are welcome The book is priced at €12 and is available locally at Polymaths, O Mahony’s, First Chapter, Manor and online at www.michaelculloty.com

Bexblah Beauty HELLO MY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK! To everyone who has sent me messages in relation to last week’s page, thank you! I’m only happy to use this page to educate people about things that matter! This week I’m going to talk about something that I get asked about loads, my current skincare routine. Below are all products that I am consistently using and they’re working for me. Unlike usually, I have been trying a few cheaper skincare products and I’ve actually been loving them!

NEUTROGENA HYDRO BOOST WATER GEL

Moisturiser - I got this moisturiser over a month ago and I really really like it. It makes my skin feel very fresh and hydrated! I’m normally a high end skincare gal but this has changed the game.

LA ROCHE POSAY EFFACLAR DUO+ WITH SPF -

Obsessed with this, highly recommend it to anyone with acne prone skin. I use it every day before moisturising. This also has SPF 30 so that’s ideal.

SAND AND SKY AUSTRALIA FACE MASK

THE BODY SHOP TEA TREE FACE WASH -

I’ve been using this since before Christmas and as well as really liking it, it lasts ages! I got mine in CH. Great for my acne prone gals again, makes my skin feel so clean!

- This isn’t my first time raving about this mask, I absolutely love it! Brilliant for my pores and texture, I got mine online.

CLARINS HYDRA ESSENTIEL MOISTURISING REVIVING EYE MASK - This is a new item to my skincare routine, but a favourite all the same. I’ve been using this as a night time eye mask and I really can see a difference in the mornings. My eyes look so much more rested and awake!

NEUTROGENA HYDRO BOOST EYE AWAKENING GEL - To go with the moisturiser, I got this eye gel too. Again, very hydrating on the eye area.

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING THE MOST AMAZING WEEK!

This week I will be talking about my current favourite fat burning exercises to do at the gym.

1 2

3

STAIRMASTER - What a workout! Within 10 mins I was literally dripping sweat. The benefits of the stairmaster are as follows: Tone and sculpt your entire lower body. Stair climbing engages every major muscle in your lower body: glutes, hamstrings, quadriceps and calves. High repetitions are famous for building lean muscle and burning fat which results in toned and sculpted muscles

TABATA KETTLEBELL SWINGS - It really gets the heart rate going! You basically swing the 10-15kg kettlebell as fast as you can with proper form for 20 secs and then rest for 10 secs and repeat 8 times. It’s an amazing fat burning addition to any workout.

4

SPRINTS - definitely my favourite as they get the sweat pumping and the heart rate right up! I sprint for 20/30 seconds and rest for 10 and repeat it as much as possible.

WALKING LUNGES - I have more of a love/hate relationship with these. I hate the thought of doing them but I love it when I’m doing them and can feel it all in my lower body. The benefits include improved balance, symmetrical toning, glute toning, improved core stability and they also boost hip flexibility. So basically they’re a fantastic total body workout!

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2018

PORCHETTA PORK FOR PADDYS! At Croí we only use locally reared rare bred pork from Blair house farm, yes costs a small bit more but, flavour & traceability is paramount, so here is one for the weekend.

PORCHETTA-STYLE ROAST PORK

Porchetta, or roast suckling pig seasoned with garlic and herbs, is a traditional Italian dish. Here, the flavors of porchetta are used on a roasted pork shoulder. You’ll need to start this dish one day ahead, as the pork has to marinate overnight. INGREDIENTS • 2 tablespoons fennel seeds • 1 tablespoon coarse salt • 2 teaspoons black peppercorns • 1 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper • 1 (5 1/2- to 6-pound) boneless pork shoulder (Boston butt), excess fat trimmed with thin layer left intact • 6 large garlic cloves, minced • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil plus additional for brushing • 1 cup dry white wine • 1/2 cup chicken stock METHOD Stir fennel seeds in small pan over medium-high heat until slightly darker in color and fragrant, 4 to 5 minutes. Transfer seeds to spice mill and cool. Add salt, peppercorns, and dried crushed red pepper. Grind to medium-fine consistency (not powder).Place pork in 13 x 9 x 2-inch glass baking dish. Rub garlic all over pork, then coat with spice mixture. Loosely cover pork with waxed paper. Refrigerate overnight. Preheat oven to 180.c Brush large rimmed baking sheet with oil. Place roast, fat side up and coating intact, in center of sheet. Drizzle evenly with 2 tablespoons oil. Roast pork 30 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 120c. Roast pork until very tender and thermometer inserted into center of pork registers 80c, about 3 hours 15 minutes longer. Transfer pork to cutting board; reserve baking sheet. Let pork rest 15 to 30 minutes.Meanwhile, pour all pan juices into 2-cup measuring cup. Spoon off fat that rises to top. Place reserved baking sheet across 2 burners. Pour wine and stock onto baking sheet and bring to boil over medium-high heat, scraping up any browned bits. Boil until wine mixture is reduced to 3/4 cup, about 4 minutes. Add degreased pan juices and whisk to blend. Pour pan sauce into small bowl (sauce will be thin).Thinly slice roast. Serve with sauce. Test-Kitchen Tip The leftover roast pork would make great pulled-pork sandwiches. Shred the meat and pile it on soft rolls with your favorite barbecue sauce and creamy coleslaw. You could also use the shredded meat as a delicious filling for burritos or enchiladas. Recipes by

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! TRUMPETS AND GUNS

In a small town, a man just opened a small store selling trumpets and guns. One day his neighbor pays him a visit and says, “So how is your strange business going?” “What do you mean strange?” “Because you sell only trumpets and guns!” “So?” “Well, let me put it this way, what do you sell the most, trumpets or guns?” “It evens itself out. Each time a customer buys a trumpet, one of his neighbors buys a gun.”

BOB IS PULLED OVER BY THE POLICE. A BAG OF DRUGS IS FOUND IN HIS POCKET

Cop: Sir, do you know it’s illegal to have drugs in your possession? Bob: I’m sorry officer, but it’s not my fault. I’ve tried numerous times to get rid of the drugs, but every time I flush them down the toilet, they always reappear in my pocket. Cop: Ha, very funny. (he proceeds to place Bob under arrest ) Bob: No, I’m serious! Let me show you and if I’m lying, you can arrest me on the spot. The cop gives in, and the two of them walk into a gas station bathroom. Bob flushes the drugs down the toilet. The cop then begins to search Bob’s pockets, finding nothing. Cop: What the hell?? I thought you said when you flush the drugs that they always reappear in your pocket? Bob: Drugs? What drugs?

AT AN ANNUAL CHECKUP...

An 82 year old man was having his annual checkup, and the doctor asked him how he was feeling. “I’ve never been better!” he boasted. “I’ve got a twenty three year old bride who’s pregnant, and having my child! What do you think about that?” The doctor considered this for a moment and then said, “Let me tell you a story. I knew a guy who was an avid hunter. He never missed a season. But one day, he went out in a bit of a hurry and accidentally grabbed his umbrella instead of his gun.” The doctor continued, “So he was in the woods, and suddenly a grizzly bear appeared in front of him! He raised up his umbrella, pointed it at the bear, and squeezed the handle.”

“And do you know what happened?” the doctor queried. Dumbfounded, the old man replied “No.” The doctor continued, “The bear dropped dead in front of him!” “That’s impossible!” exclaimed the old man. “Someone else must have shot that bear.” “Exactly...” replied the doctor.

ANGELA MERKEL VISITS DONALD TRUMP IN WASHINGTON

During her stay Trump asks her: “Tell me Chancellor Merkel, what’s the secret of your years of success?” Chancellor Merkel responds: “Well I have always surrounded myself with intelligent people.” “Very interesting”, says Trump, “but how exactly do you know if they are intelligent?” “Well I just ask them a couple of simple questions. By their response I can quickly determine whether someone is intelligent or not.” “Would you mind showing me how to do that?” Trump asks. Angela picks up the phone and calls Wolfgang Schäuble, her Minister of Finance and asks: “it’s the son of your father but it’s not your brother. Who is it?” The Minister replies: “That’s easy, it’s obviously me!” Totally impressed Trump returns to the oval office and calls up his Vicepresident Michael Pence. “Mike I have a question for you. It’s the son of your father but it’s not your brother. Who is it?” Micheal stalls for a moment, not knowing the answer. He tells Trump that he will sleep over it. In the morning he wakes up still without a solution. So he rings up Barack Obama and passes the riddle to him. Obama immediately respons: “Well that’s me!” Relieved Michael calls up Trump and exclaims: “I got the answer to your question...it’s Barack Obama!!!” After a moment of silence, Trump explodes: “No you idiot, it’s Wolfgang Schäuble!!!”

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Huge turnout at KCFE Open Day The Annual Kerry College of Further Education Open Day held on Thursday 8th

March was a resounding success with an attendance of over 850 guests on the day. People flocked from all over Kerry, West Limerick and beyond seeking an opportunity to view the college and speak with Programme Co-ordinators about the ever expanding range of programmes on offer. In particular, there was strong interest in some of the newly developed programmes such as animation, science, journalism, fashion, pre-teaching, pre-garda and many more. While many secondary schools brought busloads of school leavers there was also a massive interest from adults considering a return to education to retrain, upskill or change career direction. As the programmes are developed in line with industry needs and also act as a solid foundation for those progressing to higher education it is no wonder that there were a lot of applications made on the on-line system as a result. Those considering a programme should note that they are being offered on a first come first served basis provided minimum entry requirements are met. Applications can be made online at kerryfe.ie

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: PART-TIME WORK AND SOCIAL WELFARE PAYMENTS Question I’m working part-time on a low wage. Do I qualify for any social welfare payments? Answer It depends on your personal circumstances. Many people work part-time before taking up full-time employment. If you are working part-time you can, in some cases, keep or apply for a partial social welfare payment, or you may qualify for additional supports. If you work over 38 hours in a fortnight and you have children you may be able to claim Working Family Payment (WFP), formerly known as Family Income Supplement or FIS. WFP is a weekly tax-free payment for people on low pay. You may be able to claim a jobseeker’s payment for the days you are not working. You can work part-time for up to three days a week and claim a reduced Jobseeker’s Benefit or Jobseeker’s Allowance payment. You may qualify for the Part-Time Job Incentive Scheme if you were getting Jobseeker’s Allowance and find part-time work for less than 24 hours per week. However, one of the main conditions for getting a jobseeker’s payment is that you must be available for work and actively seeking work. This means that you must continue to look for work on the days you are unemployed. You must also be unemployed for at least four days out of seven consecutive days. If you return to work after a period of unemployment, you may qualify for the Back to Work Family Dividend (BTWFD) which aims to help families move from social welfare into employment. The BTWFD and WFP can be paid together and the BTWFD is not taken into account in the means test for WFP. If you are parenting alone and getting a One-Parent Family Payment, you are allowed to earn a certain amount each week and keep your payment. In some cases, people getting disability payments can do some work and keep a social welfare payment.

TORQUING CARS! MEDIA CRITICISMS PRICKLE AS OWNERS RAVE ABOUT TESLA

Going by three delighted Tesla owners, the rest of us should be buying far more of the brand’s electric models. So far this year, 33 new cars have been registered (SIMI data), but there is no doubting the exceptional level of interest in the brand, especially in the wake of generous Budget BIK measures.Georg Ell, western Europe director, says those measures and a “very good” charging infrastructure (not all would agree) are helping to set us apart. One man testifying to the benevolent Irish environment is Grattan Healy, the Galway man who, as Motors reported last year drove his Tesla Model S to Morocco and back. He recently drove it to Fez (Morocco) and back. He claims the car has cost him a pittance in running costs. With 73,000km on the clock, all he has changed are the two front tyres. He pays €120/year road tax and little for charging. He went to “Fez and back and it cost me nothing, absolutely nothing”. Bernard Smith, Terenure, Dublin, was rapturous about his Tesla Model S. He plugs it in for charging at night to coincide with the cheaper electricity and that does him for several days. For a former BMW 535d driver it is something to hear him say of the Tesla: “It’s a car I love driving.” Digital architect Dermot O’Shea had two BMW i3s, but now his Model S ticks all his boxes. He travels from Blanchardstown to south Kerry fairly regularly; no bother with range. The decision was made for him when he compared repayment costs with a Porsche Panamera or Macan. His monthly Tesla repayments were half those for a Porsche. He’s thrilled with his car.Meantime the mass appeal Model 3 is due next year, we’re told. It could be the car that opens the floodgates. Only thing is Audi, BMW, Merc etc have a load of their own EVs on track for the next couple of years too. Then perhaps comparisons will be possible on a level playing field.Pictured at the Tesla event (indo motoring )

GENEVA’S MOTOR SHOW ...WHATS HOT !

Here’s a brief snapshot of what’s on at the show. Audi’s A6 is a major debutant and shares the limelight with the e-tron, the brand’s electric SUV. All versions of the A6 will have fuel-saving mild-hybrid technology. And it will have the same radar, ultrasonic sensors, lidar and camera technology that will eventually enable level three autonomous driving capability on the A8 saloon and A7 fastback. BMW’s M8 600bhp concept is a 2019 arrival, but they are showing it anyway. We brought you the first pictures of the next X4 recently, with on-the-road prices expected to start at €67,195. It’s here in late summer. A hot M40i variant of the X3 is coming too. Citroen show their new Berlingo Multispace. It’s heavily practical, with three independent/folding rear seats and 19 driving assistance technologies. Here late 2018 or first quarter of 2019. Ferrari’s 488 Pista is powered by the most powerful V8 engine in the marque’s history. Ford’s special edition Mustang Bullitt begins production for Europe in June: 5-litre V8, expected 464PS. Important facelifts too for the Ka+ with the Ka+ Active (showing a bit of mini-SUV muscle). They’ll be on sale later this year and will be side by side with a Fiesta Active. Order books for Honda’s retro-styled Urban electric vehicle - shorter than a Jazz are to open early next year. The new CR-V will not have a diesel, instead relying on a 1.5 petrol (late summer) and hybrid powerplants (October/November). Jaguar’s new I-Pace all-electric SUV gets its motor show debut. Its 90kWh lithium ion battery is capable of covering 480km, they claim (new WLTP cycle; 537km on the old NEDC test). They say public charging to 80pc capacity on a 50kW charger should take 1hr 25min. It is also compatible with 100kW public chargers (where available) which give an 80pc charge in 45 minutes. A ‘home’ 7kW wall box will charge to 80pc in 10 hours. Hyundai say their electric Kona SUV can cover 300km to 467km on a single charge, depending on model. It is expected here for the 182-reg period. Their new Santa Fe will be a 191-reg motor for Irish buyers. Two engines are new to the car: The current 200PS 2.2-litre diesel may be accompanied by a new 2-litre diesel as well as a 2-litre turbocharged petrol. (Indo Motoring ) 40

TORQUING CARS! YES, WE’RE LOOKING AT IT’ – SERGIO MARCHIONNE ADMITS FERRARI MIGHT BUILD NEW VERSIONS OF ITS ICONIC CARS

Sergio Marchionne, the eminently quotable CEO of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), came up with a couple of corkers at the 2018 Geneva motor show. My favourite, delivered during the Ferrari press conference, was when Marchionne was questioned about the criteria for owning the new 488 Pista, a track-honed special of the 488 GTB coupé. He responded that the situation will vary from region to region but the minimum requirement is that you must own at least one Ferrari already. If you drive a Ford Mustang before,” said Marchionne, “you should go to a Ford dealer for your next car.” With 710bhp, the Pista is 49bhp more powerful than the standard 488 GTB. Equally important, it is 90kg lighter. The aerodynamic tweaks are significant - and it looks exactly as you might expect, with larger wings, slots and vents than the standard car. Marchionne also confirmed that Ferrari will “embrace electrification” for its future cars. “The next hybrid is more complex [than the LaFerrari hypercar, in which the hybrid system was used to provide more power], it needs to fulfil a different role.” “You will see it in 2019. We have [test] mules running around now.” He also confirmed that Ferrari has considered making continuation cars, such as Jaguar has done with the XKSS, D-type and E-type Lightweight and Aston Martin with the DB4 GT.

REAL-LIFE FERRIS BUELLER’ WRECKED UNCLE’S £180,000 FERRARI AFTER SMOKING CANNABIS

These snaps show a real-life Ferris Bueller moment after a young driver wrote off his uncle’s £180,000 Ferrari after taking it for a spin while stoned. Naeem Patel, 28, crashed the Ferrari 458 Spider - which has top speeds of around 200mph - the day after he had borrowed it to attend a social event. Photos captured in the aftermath show the remains of the supercar - which goes from 0-62mph in 3.4 seconds - with extensive damage to the right side after Patel wrapped it around a lamppost. Police say the Ferrari driver lost control along Beaumont Road near to the Britannia Hotel in Bolton, Greater Manchester, just before 2pm on November 25 last year. A court heard that Patel had driven just 1,000 yards before crashing and his uncle “was not best pleased”. At the scene officers revealed the driver, who is believed to have not suffered any major injuries, noticed he smelled slightly of cannabis and his eyes were bloodshot.A roadside swab confirmed Patel had been using cannabis which he admitted he smoked to relax him, a court heard.Patel, of Markland Hill, pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle with a proportion of a specified drug above the specified limit and was fined £400 by Bolton magistrates.

If your car has developed a fault, turn to Honest John by emailing honestadvice@telegraph.co.uk

SEVEN, WONDERS

Having just acquired a Skoda Yeti with seven-speed automatic gearbox, I was dismayed to read your negative comments about its transmission. What are the problems and how will I recognise their onset? BC It affects all VW Group cars with the DQ200 twin dry-clutch seven-speed DSG/Stronic gearbox.

COUNTRY PURSUITS

I am looking to replace my Mini Cooper JCW. I am looking for something fun, but a little bigger (such as a BMW M3 or VW Golf R). I will use the car for a daily commute on A-roads and country lanes. MS The latest Golf R has the DQ500 seven-speed wet clutch DSG and that makes an enormous difference, because the old DQ250 six-speed DSG wasn’t up to the job. You might also consider an Audi RS3 400 saloon (with the DQ500). 42

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR ST PATRICK’S WEEKEND COLUMN: KERRY’S DOUBLE NOMINATIONS FOR FAI AWARDS: There will be more interest than usual on the FAI Player of the Year Awards this Sunday night. The televised awards are the biggest gathering off the field for soccer and Kerry have 2 nominees. Both players have connections to Tralee Dynamos which is a great credit to the club. Teak tough defender Brian Fitzgerald played for the Tralee club in the A Championship and also for Kerry in the Oscar Traynor before moving to the Munster Senior League where he now stars with Cobh Wanderers. Last season he was the Munster Senior League Player of the Year. Sean Kennedy displayed his skills for Dynamos before playing for the Kerry League of Ireland last season and has been capped for Ireland on a number of occasions. He is on the radar of a number of cross channel clubs and is nominated for the u15 International Player of the Year Award. KENNEDY CUP SQUAD 2018: The 2018 Kennedy Cup is only a few months away and the build-up has really began with the naming of the 2018 Squad. Kerry who won the Cup in 2015, finished 7th in 2016 the Shield in 2017 should be in the Pot of the Top 8 seeds for the draw which will take place today Friday, March 16th at 3pm and is live on the SFAI Facebook page. THE SQUAD: The Management team, under Head Coach Joe O’Reilly, have been working with these players for a number of years and following this season’s u14’s ETP have made the tough decision to name a squad of 20 players. “This is always one of the hardest parts of the Kennedy Cup management as we have to disappoint a number of players who have put in a great effort over many months. However we will be keeping an eye on those players who were unsuccessful at this time as they could still be called in due to injuries or other issues with the named squad. And I also want

44

TRALEE ADVERTISER

to assure them that they will still have plenty of opportunities to get involved in the Kerry soccer set-up in the future”. 6 clubs are represented in this year’s squad: St Brendan’s Park, Killorglin, Listowel Celtic, Killarney Athletic, Tralee Dynamos and Fenit. The Players: St Brendan’s Park: Colin Doody, Sean O’Connor, Kieran O’Connor, Cianan Cooney, Conor Kerins, Sean Hill, Sean O’Connell, Messiah Chirwa, Liam Carmody. Killorglin: Tom Whittleton, Conor Spillane, Jason O’Connor, Eoghan Hassett. Listowel Celtic: Jack Moloney, Robert Stack, Kieran O’Connell, Killarney Athletic: Mathew Horgan, Roco Rudjucan, Fenit: Eddie McCarthy and Tralee Dynamos: Andy Rogers. PARK LIFE: Things are going very well for the side based at Christy Leahy Park. St Brendan’s Park travelled to Freebooters in Kilkenny in the FAI Youths Cup ¼ final having lost a number of player from the last round as they have signed with the Kerry 17’s League of Ireland. But the squad and management pulled off one of the great results of any Kerry club side for a long time winning 6-5 on penalties. The Park took the lead in the 25th minute when Mervyn Shalemba set up Conor O’Brien who made no mistake and slotted the ball home. The home side equalised in the 55th minute and it stayed that way until the end of extra time. Into penalties and the Park players showed great composure to win 6-5 with keeper Conor Hayes making a great save during the spot kicks and set up a home semi-final against St Kevin’s Boys from Dublin. This game should attract a huge crowd with the game pencilled in for April 8th. But they won’t have been celebrating the win too much as their thoughts now turn to this Sunday when the travel to Dungarvan United for their Munster Youths Cup semi-final. It is a great achievement for the side to be in the last four of both competitions – something Killarney Celtic did a few years ago and won the Munster Youths.

Friday 16th March 2018

The Park’s will certainly have the momentum with them but no trip to Waterford is ever easy. However everyone in Kerry hopes they can get through and set up a final against Douglas Hall from Cork. The Park 14’s are on the road this weekend when they go to Dublin in the quarter finals of the Skechers National Cup. On Monday they face Leceister Celtic at 2pm in the Last 4. This team are top of the Premier in Kerry and have 9 players on the 2018 Kennedy Cup squad which has just been named. KERRY 17’S HEAD TO CABINTEELY: All the pre-season work for the Kerry under 17’s League of Ireland side is complete and they head to Dublin this Sunday for their season opener. The squad has been working hard and will be hoping to get something from this game – where they drew 1-1 last season. The Cabinteely game is the first of a long season for the management team led by Darren Aherne and his squad. They went on a number of great mini-runs last season picking up points in a number of continuous games. They have done all the build-up work they can and will be hoping it now pays off on the field. TRALEE DYNAMOS NEWS: Academy: Dynamos academy continues every Friday evening at the IT College astro turf pitch from 6 to 7pm.Thanks to coaches Ken, Noel, Robin, Tony and Roland for helping out last Friday evening. Great strides have been made by all players over the course of the season. Well doe to all. U-15 League: Dynamos 2 - 2 Killorglin. Without our four Kerry League of Ireland players, this encounter was always going to be a tough one against a very imposing Killorglin side. Depite missing five starting regulars Dynamos put in a very good shift and could easily have secured all three points. Credit to Killorglin, they kept fighting to the end and scored the equaliser with 5 minutes remaining. Both Raymond Sila and Patrick Moravski were on the score-sheet for Dynamos.

TIME TO LOOK FORWARD FOR KERRY: Kerry will have done all the revision they needed to this week following their heavy defeat to Dublin last week. Time will tell what the significance of this game was – Kerry were very good in parts while not taking all their chances but was it a case of Dublin just toying with us and waiting to move into another gear or were they just a little worried when Kerry played some great attacking football. But for now Dublin will be put to the back of the players and managements minds as all thoughts turn to Cian O’Neills Kildare. Kerry are on 4 points and 2 more will guarantee them safety. Indeed if results go their way Kerry could be safe on the 4 points. This is a transition period for Kerry and everyone must give the players the opportunity to grow into senior football. They will have a lot of big games in the Super 8 and at the end of September the overall performances of the players and the team will be much more important than how far we get this year. Kerry and Kildare meet in Austin Stack Park this Saturday night at 7pm. Kerry Hurlers: 3 wins from 5 in the National Hurling League Division 2 and safety in mid-table probably would have been acceptable for many years for Kerry hurlers. But this side have higher expectations and will be a little disappointed not to have made the play-offs. There defeat to Westmeath means they now turn their attention to the McDonagh Cup where they face Carlow in the opening round. ST PATS NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 7,9,21 and 24 with the next Jackpot being e6,600. Well done to all those who were in action at the Academy over the weekend. In the u6’s Owen McMillan was the Player of the Week with Gearoid Hingston being named as the u8’s Player of the Week. The Academy has this weekend off to allow the players to enjoy the Parades. The u10’s are also free this weekend while the u12 Boys and Girls are on the Astro this Friday. Training continues as usual for the u14 boys and girls and the u16’s The Minors are due to face Annascaul/Lispole in Blennerville on Monday at 4pm. Seniors: The seniors made a winning start to their County League Division 3 campaign with a 1-12 to 1-10 away win at Listry. But a win did not look likely at half time with the home side leading 1-08 to 0-04. However an early Paul McMahon goal got St Pats back into contention and they pushed on to take the win. The club wishes the players who picked up injuries a speedy recovery. BALLYMAC NEWS:

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER The Seniors went down by the narrowest of margins in Division 2 of the County League losing 0-12 to 2-07 at home to Kenmare. The first half was a low scoring one with the visitors leading 1-04 to 0-03 at the break. It was a totally different second half with both sides putting in a great attacking display with the game doing down to the wire and indeed into the 6 minutes of injury time. Ballymac brought an outstanding display to the field today and well done to team and management on this promising start to the season. Congratulations to Kenmare today on taking home your first points and we wish you the best in the season. Lotto: There was no winner from the numbers drawn 5,23, 25 and 28 and the next jackpot will be e3,800. In the underage the u14 Girls are set to take on Dingle on Sunday 25th at 5pm in their first game of the season while the u14 boys lost out to Na Gaeil by 1 point 2-11 to 4-06. There was a great turn-out for the Academy with big numbers of u6’s, u8’s and u10’s training. Many of these players will be marching with the club in the Tralee Parade on Saturday and the Academy will train on Sunday from 11.15am. Anyone interested in the 2018 Gaeltacht Scholarships should contact the club as soon as possible. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: The Seniors will be happy with their League opening win against Templenoe. It was a tight game with the South Kerry side leading 2-05 to 0-09 at the short whistle. A penalty from Tommy Walsh helped to set up the win. The scores were level on three further occasions but Walsh again proved to be the hero, ending with 1-08, giving the team a valuable 2 League points. Their next game is at home to St Mary’s in Strand Road on Sunday March 25th in Round 2. The B’s put up a decent performance in their opening Division 5 game before going down to Scartaglin. They will play Churchill at home on March 25th. Everyone is looking forward to a great night at the Strictly Club Dancing this week. Doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 8pm. Junior Blues: There was a big turn-out out for the Academy and anyone who has not registered are asked to do so as soon as possible. Hopefully many of these players will march in the St Patricks Day Parade on Saturday. The u14’s had a big win over Stacks in the Coiste Tra Li League despite being behind in the early stages of the second half. The Ladies and underage girl’s teams train at their usual times this week. Lotto: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 3,6,14 and 19 with the next jackpot being e3.100.

FOURTH FOR GARVEY’S BUT MORE TO COME: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors have finished a very close 4th in the Men’s SuperLeague but their season is still not over. In their final two games their midweek trip to Dublin turned into a tough night on and off the court. They were caught up in a tail back on the N7 for nearly two hours. And that probably hindered them as their clash with Black Amber Templeogue went into overtime. The Tralee side gave it their all but went down 97-88 which cost them a shot at the title. They recovered well to win their last home game of the season defeating Belfast Star 74-58 and had more to cheer about when Trae Pemberton was named as the February SuperLeague Player of the Month. Champions Trophy: The Warriors will now turn their attention to the Champions Trophy where they will face Griffith College Swords Thunder in a game due to be played this weekend. Thunder finished just below Garvey’s in the table with two less wins than the Tralee side. TRALEE RIDERS DO WELL IN RAS LIUMNI: Following on from the season opening Lacey Cup the cycling action last weekend was across the border with Ras Liumni. Cormac Daly of Tralee Manor West was the best of the Kerry riders in action taking 4th place in the A1/A2 race. His team-mate David Fitzgerald took third in the A3 race while Manor West riders Stephen Griffin and Shane Fleming were 2nd and 6th in the A3 race. One of the clubs underage riders Eoin Moloney was in the top half of the big Junior race in Mayo. RALLY CORNER: Kerry Motor Club member Sean Hegarty unveiled his 2018 rally plans at a special event in Limerick on Friday night. The Tralee codriver is set to contest this year’s Irish Tarmac Rally Championship and other selected rallies alongside Limerick Ford Dealer Keith Lyons. The team unveiled their newly acquired Ford Fiesta R5 at the Lyons of Limerick Ford, Volvo and Jaguar dealership where they outlined plans for the season ahead. First up for the Kerry/ Limerick squad is this weekend’s West Cork Rally. They face a very busy April as they are committed to contesting the Easter Stages in County Antrim and The Circuit of Kerry on the same weekend. Once they complete the Northern Irish event on Saturday, they face the long overnight journey to the Rose Hotel in preparation for the Tralee-based Circuit of Kerry. They will be joined on the Circuit of Kerry by Keith’s father Ken, the winner of the 1987 Circuit of

Kerry, in his Ford Escort Mk2. They also hope to tackle the Cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes the first weekend in May making it four rallies contested in just over seven weeks. Great offer should being the rally crews to Tralee: Motorsport specialist travel agent, Fairfield Motorsport, can offer special rates to UK visitors who wish to contest either the Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry or the Cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes. The South Wales firm specialises in ferry bookings for Motorsport events and has years of experience on Irish Sea crossing. The Circuit of Kerry runs on April 8 out of Tralee while the Rally of the Lakes is based 20 miles away in Killarney and is set for the May Bank holiday weekend. The Circuit of Kerry is a counting round of the Triton Showers Irish National, the Top Part West Coast and the Moriarty’s Centra Kingdom of Kerry rally Championships. The Rally of the Lakes counts towards the Irish Tarmac Rally championship as well as forming round two and three of the Kingdom of Kerry series. Fairfield Motorsport can also create hotel and sailing packages to further reduce costs for rally crews or spectators based in Britain. An additional offer is in pace where UK crews who wish to contest both rallies can leave their rally car and tow van in the care of Kerry Motor Club members in secure storage near Tralee between the two events. Crews wising to avail of the local storage deal are asked to contact Sean Moriarty on 0044 7908 830689. JOHNATHON JOINS THE TWINS IN THE NATIONAL FINALS RING: Having won his Munster final on Tuesday night Johnathon McCarthy did not have much time to celebrate. He was back in the ring at the National Stadium on Saturday night in the 48KG Youth 1 section where an All Ireland final place was up for grabs. Against him was the Ulster champion Padraig McCleary from the Ardoyne Boxing Club in Belfast but he was unable to live with the speed and foot work of the Tralee fighter. McCarthy was making his opponent miss time and time again while connecting with his own punches and ended up a deserved winner. McCarthy will now join his twin cousins Mike and Patrick in the All Ireland Championship finals on March 24th. The Boy’s 1,2,3 Munster weigh-ins were held in the Tralee Boxing Club on Sunday with boxing for these boys in the South-side Boxing Club in Limerick next weekend March 18th and 19th.

Buster Race on the night is for the Kerry Schoolboys Girls League including the 15’s League of Ireland squad with tickets on sale for e10.
