WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... MAGGIE WANTS YOU TO JOIN THE 2017 FESTIVAL TEAM! VOLUNTEERS are being sought to help co-ordinate and marshal the multitude of events planned for this year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival from 16th to 22nd August. The 2016 Rose of Tralee, Maggie McEldowney, took time out of her busy schedule to thank the current volunteer panel and encourage new personnel to join a great team of people who work tirelessly to make the Festival a success each year. The deadline for receipt of Volunteer Application Forms is Friday 28th July 2017. Prospective volunteers will gain first-hand experience of working on a large international Arts and Culture Festival that has such a rich and celebrated history. The Volunteer Coordinator, Michelle Reidy, who has been involved since 2013 and previously in the 1980s and 1990s, said: “Volunteers are certainly the life-blood of the Rose of Tralee International Festival and their involvement is vital to the successful running of this

major event. She said that the general public would not enjoy the parades, fireworks displays, live music and street entertainment without the presence of an efficient, skilled and dedicated team of volunteers. The duties of the volunteers over the week of the Festival will include being part of teams for the various events throughout the week of the Festival.” All volunteers will be given health and safety training, will be provided with a team uniform, access to meals while on their breaks and a chance to win the ‘Volunteer of the Festival Award’. A minimum of four 4-hour shifts and full-time volunteers who cover a minimum of eight 4-hour shifts will receive some extra goodies including free tickets to events. Most of all, however, they are an integral part of something special and get a chance to be hands-on and up-close with events such as the Rose Parades, Fireworks Displays, on-street entertainment, Festival Dome events and much more.

Kerry Volunteer Centre, who play a vital role in supporting Volunteers and organisations in Kerry, will also assist in the

recruitment process If you would like to be part of the event please contact the Festival office by phone 066 7121322 or download the online volunteering form at www.roseoftralee.ie or email volunteers@roseoftralee.ie. SIAMSA TIRE, HOME TO THE NATIONAL FOLK THEATRE Every Monday – Friday 8.30pm FADÓ FADÓ National Folk Theatre of Ireland A whole year’s cycle of living and working the land is dramatised though lively singing, music and dance.

There are dozens of dodgy streams that let you watch Sky Sports without needing a subscription but watching them is illegal. There are other ways to watch them, if you know someone with a Sky subscription and they don't mind you borrowing their Sky Go account and if they subscribe to sky Sports then you watch it on a tablet or an android box. If you are an Eir customer you can add BT Sports and Eir sports to your sky box for free. If you don’t have Sky then you download an app on to your android phone and cast it to your TV using a Chromecast device. Vodafone Bill Pay Red Connect Essentials mobile contracts now offer Sky Sports 1 and 2 for free.

What is Now TV

If you've been eying up Sky's impressive library of content but can't afford a full satellite service then Now TV might be the streaming service for you. It is a Pay as you go service so no contracts. Prices start from €15 per month which will give you the entertainment pass which includes 10 channels and 250 boxsets if you want a movie pass you pay an extra €10 a month. The sports is expensive at an extra €50 per month. Alternatively you can get a sports day pass for €10 or a week pass for €15. So how do I get it? The easy way is to purchase a Now TV Box form Curry’s or Harvey Norman for €40 which include a movie pass or entertainment pass. Do not purchase a Now TV Box from the UK as it will not work with an Irish Account. You will need at least 5mb of broadband speed to use this services although they recommend 2.5mb speed but at that speed your picture quality will suffer.

TRAVEL CORNER IN ASSOCIATION WITH

NORMA FROM PREMIER TRAVEL ANSWERS YOUR TRAVEL QUERIES.... Question: My partner and I are thinking of going on a long haul holiday, where is the best to go and should we go All Inclusive? Jane and Mike from Tralee Trying to decide where to go on holidays can be though but here are a few pointers that may help you make your decision:

Book for

FATHER’S DAY or the

HOLIDAYS

1) Your budget - consider how much you can spend as this will help you narrow down your search 2) Time of year - plan your trip. Check for rainy season etc as lets face it we get enough rain here we don't need it while we are away! 3) Make a list of places you really want to visit and ask your local travel agent, they will be able to help you make the best decision to suit your travel needs. 4) All inclusive can be a great option when it comes to a luxury holiday with most 4* & 5* hotels offering several different restaurant options included in the price and all your drinks. This can help you decide on how much spending money to bring with you as all you will have to pay for are your excursions!! I am just back from a long haul holiday myself. I spent a week in Mexico, three nights in New York and three in Boston. It was an amazing holiday as someone who travels a lot I always like to make the most of a trip like this. If your flight is via a country why not try to extend your trip on this stop over and make your trip a two centre holiday, speak to a Travel Agent who can advise you on if this is possible and arrange all the details for you. Holidays are not meant to be stressful so leave it to someone who knows what they are doing so you sit back and enjoy every minute of it!!

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... FIRSTLY, DOESN’T THE NEW LOOK ‘DENNY STREET LOOK GREAT ? Somehow with all the traffic tidied up on it , we are rediscovering that Its a very elegant and grand street . Tell us what you think about the ‘New Look ‘ Denny Street and improvements being made to the Mall In an interview, Tralee’s singing son Mark Leen was asked about the new 2 way system on Denny Street and the new look town centre in general. He told us “I wish to congratulate Kerry County Council and in particular Frank Hartnett for having the foresight and daring to pull off such a great re-alignment of our main thoroughfare. I

believe -said Mr Leen - that this will eventually save lives. We asked him what he was driving at and he answered, “Two way traffic makes Denny St safer. I believe accidents will be greatly reduced and collisions will drop by as much as 60%, despite more cars using Denny Street. Instinctively you might think the one way traffic was safer because its all going in the same direction, however, that can tempt drivers to go faster while pedestrians may be less likely to stop and look properly before they step out.” I think crime will be reduced and property values will increase in the area because of the better living environment created on Denny St and the

Denny Street in the 1930s slower traffic now gives a sort of regal and grandiose look

back to the town centre “ he said.

The school organised the family fun day in honour of Donal, their past pupil on June 11th. “We wanted to honour Donal and so the committee worked to create an event where people would come together for a few hours, have fun and ‘live life’ just as Donal had urged us all to.” said school principal Peter Linehan. “This is the fourth hosting of the annual event and it was yet a real team effort yet again. Huge credit must go to our Parents Association who worked tirelessly over the past few weeks to ensure that everything would be ready”, added Peter. Despite the poor weather conditions, over four hundred people visited the school which was a hive of activity with a fabulous farmers market in operation and fun 18

games and challenges for young and old all day. The Parents Association had also organised a beautiful barbeque on site with teas and tasty treats also being served up as well. The students in 4th and 5th classes organised an exciting rocket launching competition and young Tralee musician Séamas Harty entertained everyone with some beautiful songs. Following that, street performer, Guido Fanzini had everyone in stitches with his hilarious show. However, the main event of the day was the ‘Donal Walsh Spa 6K Challenge’ a looped run/walk starting and finishing at the school. Donal’s parents Fionbarr and Elma Walsh officially started the run/ walk. There was a wonderful atmosphere as young and not so young set off to tackle the course in the challenging weather conditions. First home in the men’s section was Arthur Fitzgerald from Farranfore with local man Friday 16th June 2017

Local lady, Ciara Tierney scooped first place in the ladies section closely followed by Christine Brosnan. Elma Walsh was thrilled with the event, “We are delighted

to be back in Spa N.S. again, a place where Donal had so many happy days. Everyone had a really wonderful day and Donal would have loved it!”

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR FUTURE - CAO CHANGE OF MIND DEADLINE IS SATURDAY 1ST JULY Irelands’ most important state exam, the Leaving Certificate, is well and truly underway. Thousands of students in exam centres across Ireland are drawing on their years of learning and preparation in an effort to achieve results which best reflect their hard work and ability. For many who have their sights set on attending college, these results translate to all important CAO points, the entry key to college courses across the country. Students interested in going forward to third level education have already submitted their initial CAO application forms, but with the CAO Change of Mind deadline of Saturday 1st July fast approaching, and during what is already a stressful exam period, many student minds will be consumed with a myriad of questions and uncertainty. Did I pick the right course as my No.1 choice? Will I get enough points for my preferred course and college? Have I chosen the right college for me? After finishing college what job opportunities would my chosen course offer me? Is it too late

to change my mind about my CAO application? To help ease some of this stress and anxiety Leaving Certificate students may be feeling our friends at the Institute of Technology Tralee (IT Tralee), a popular choice for students from the greater Munster region and all over Ireland, have some helpful tips to guide you on the correct path to further education: Your No.1 Priority is Your Exams Focus on the task at hand, doing your very best at each exam as it comes. Research, Research, Research! There are thousands of fantastic courses in a wide range of colleges to choose from, with new courses constantly being developed and added. Ask For Advice Ask those who have gone through this process, such as brothers, sisters, cousins, older friends, parents or your teachers for their advice. Remember, College is Best Years of Your Life College is an opportunity to

try different things, experience the new and exciting, while making memories and a network of friends for life. Get Ready to Make New Friends For Life – College is a time to meet new people and make new connections and friends for life. Speaking in relation to his experience of filling out a CAO Change of Mind form, First Year Health & Leisure student at IT Tralee, and captain of the Kerry Minors, David Clifford from Killarney commented “I always had a huge interest in sport and fitness growing up, and knew I wanted it to play a big part in my future. The first thing that jumped to mind was PE Teaching, which was what I had initially put down on my CAO form.“My first port of call was to chat to friends and teammates about their college experience to date, and many were speaking very highly about IT Tralee. For me personally there were more pros for IT Tralee on my pro and con list. They had just opened some amazing new facilities and had more improvement plans, which

really impressed me.With one year down I am delighted to say I have no regrets and look forward to the next four years of my degree,” concluded Clifford. For more information on the perks and opportunities that studying at IT Tralee has to offer, and for queries from students or parents interested in knowing more, please visit www.ittralee.ie or call the admissions office now on 066 7145638. Applications can be made via the CAO Change of Mind at www.cao.ie by Saturday 1st July 2017.

PETER HELPS FIONN REALISE HIS RUGBY DREAM! The tournament, Amsterdam 7s, is an annual event which this year played host to 140 teams. The competition is divided up into categories of men, women and veterans. The majority of the other teams were comprised of top level amateur players. The Rah Rah Rooster Barbarians were one such team, featuring Kerry’s own Fionn McGibney. The Tarbert native was one of twelve players playing on the Barbarian side, made up of players from all around the world. Fionn has represented Munster at all age grade levels and started his rugby with Listowel RFC, but currently plays club rugby with Shannon RFC.The Amsterdam 7s tournament sees all teams in each category pooled into groups of four, with each team playing each other once.

The Roosters saw off an Italian 7s development side as well as a Swedish 7s development side to progress to the semi-finals to face the Dutch national team. In front of a crowd of 5000 people, as well as being streamed live on YouTube, the Roosters recorded a 17-12 victory. A last minute try by McGibney, his second of the game, meant that the Roosters progressed to the final to face Poland. A well drilled Polish side proved too powerful for the Roosters in the final, and the game finished up 24-0 in favour of the Polish. Fionn finished the competition MVP for tier 3 as well as top try scorer. Fionn would like to thank his sponsor Clifford’s Cash and Carry of Tralee, who made his journey possible. It was an incredible experience, one he hopes to repeat in the future. Friday 16th June 2017

Hello my Beautiful Friends! I hope you’re all having an amazing week! This weekend I was home in Tralee and I was due another visit to the fabulous House Of Glamour to get my nails done. What I love about House Of Glamour is I always know that whoever I go to inside there, my nails are always going to look amazing! My last set of nails lasted me 6 weeks and they were perfect so this time I got refills from Didi. Normally what I do is, when go into House Of Glamour, I kind of have an idea of what style nails I want but I also love just asking the Nail Technichian what she thinks would look cool and ask her ideas, because at the end of the day, Nail Techs are very creative and have loads of amazing ideas! I told Didi I wanted pink coffin shaped nails but I don’t mind what design she wants to do… AND I AM OBSESSED WITH THE RESULT!

I have never had pink and I don’t know why, they’re amazing! The flower detail is fully hand painted and the detail is insane! So thanks a million to Didi in House Of Glamour for my beautiful nails. Next on the agenda is my nails for Thailand. I’ve been looking up lots of nails for inspiration and I think I know what I want(yes I know I literally just got them done). I said I’d add in some ‘Holiday Nail Inspiration’ pictures for any of you going on holidays soon and wanting to get your nails done.

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK! This week I’m going to be talking about something I feel very strongly about, losing weight fast. ‘Quick Fixes’, ‘Lose 10 pounds in 4 weeks’, ‘6 weeks to abs’ and things along that line. For SO long I wanted the quick fix, I wanted to change my entire body in 12 weeks and would set insane and unrealistic goals. I would google ‘ways to lose 3 stone in 3 months’, ‘lose weight fast’ and all these other crazy things. Quick fixes are attractive because when you want to lose weight, you want to do it fast and easily. Companies make millions selling ‘Quick Fixes’ ’10 minute Ab workouts’ and ’12 week body transformations’, why do they make millions? Because they’re all targeting the same type of person, the person who wants quick results – but here’s the thing, quick results don’t last, they’re not sustainable and realistically, they will set you back. I was the girl who would make a resolution in January, then get caught up with progress, time and why it all wasn’t happening fast enough. I would fall off track because I was trying quick

fixes that weren’t working… then in April I would think, ‘If only I stuck to the plan in January I would be so much closer to my goal’ or ‘It’s so close to Summer now I don’t have enough time to lose weight’. All of these thoughts that now make so little sense. I just wanted the quick fix, the easiest option. The reality is, if you have a high body fat percentage and a lot of weight to lose, quick fixes might work for a certain amount of time, but more than likely one or all of the following will happen. 1. You’ll end up with sagging skin in areas if you lose weight too fast and don’t build muscle. 2. You’ll quit because you aren’t seeing results fast enough. 3. Your plan won’t be sustainable and too restrictive and therefore will set you back. 4. You’ll end up damaging your metabolism. 5. You’ll end up damaging your health. Think of why you want to get in shape and change your body. Is it to look good in a bikini? Is it because Summer is here? Is it to please another person? … Or … Is it to benefit your health? Gain strength? Become more confident in yourself? If it is the latter, great! But you have to be prepared to work hard and take time. In fact, don’t even think about how long it is going to take, I know it’s cliché but you HAVE to just take it day by day and trust the process. I finally last year just decided enough was enough, I took it day by day, week by week and tracked my slow progress and kept balance in my

life. And now, I’m happier than ever. I set small achievable goals and a don’t put a time frame on things like ‘I want to be down 30 pounds in 2 months’, I just work hard and see how my body reacts to what I’m doing. There is no big rush, I don’t want to lose an insane amount of weight really fast and have extra skin on my stomach and chest, I want to be strong, fit and healthy for life, not just for the Summer. I have a huge trip to Thailand coming up? What am I doing? Staying consistent and making good choices. No cutting carbs or dropping crazy low on my calories. I ain’t about that quick fix life anymore! So next time you’re tempted by a ‘Lose 7 pounds in 7 days’ diet, think about it a bit more about what you really want.

The Flavour of Fish!

Beautiful light & heathly fish dishes are lovely in the summer time. When we get one that is.! So here are two for you. At CROI restaurant the Square, Tralee I like to keep my fish dishes light and let the flavour of the fish come through

MONKFISH STEW WITH SAFFRON BROTH INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • •

1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1 1/2 pound monkfish fillet, trimmed and sliced crosswise 1 inch thick Sea salt Pepper 2 shallots, thinly sliced 2 carrots, sliced into 1/2-inch rounds 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves Pinch of saffron threads 1/3 cup dry white wine Basil leaves, for garnish Steamed or mashed potatoes, for serving

METHOD

In a medium enameled cast-iron casserole, heat 2 tablespoons of the olive oil. Season the monkfish with salt and pepper and cook over moderate heat, turning, until light golden, about 3 minutes. Using a slotted spoon or tongs, transfer the monkfish to a plate along with the monkfish and any accumulated juices. Bring just to a simmer, cover and cook over low heat until the vegetables are tender and the fish is cooked through, about 15 minutes. Spoon the stew into shallow bowls, garnish with basil and serve with potatoes.

HALIBUT AND SUMMER VEGETABLES EN PAPILLOTE • • • • • • • • • • • •

1 punt cherry tomatoes, halved 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar 1 tablespoon thyme leaves Sea salt and freshly ground pepper 3 tablespoons butter Four 6-ounce halibut steaks, about 1 inch thick 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1 lemon, thinly sliced into 12 rounds 1/4 cup olives 1 courgette quartered lengthwise 1 teaspoon ground coriander seeds

Preheat the oven to 176;. On a baking sheet, toss the tomatoes with the oil, vinegar and thyme. Arrange the tomatoes cut side up and season with salt and pepper. Bake the tomatoes for 45 minutes, until slightly dried In a large pan, melt 1 tablespoon of the butter. Season the halibut with salt and pepper and add to the pan. Cook over moderately high heat until lightly browned on one side, about 3 minutes; transfer to a plate. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter to the pan and cook over moderate heat until it just starts to brown, about 2 minutes. Remove from the heat, stir in the lemon juice and season with salt and pepper. Lay four 15-inch-long sheets of parchment paper on a work surface. Arrange 3 lemon slices in the center of each sheet and top with a halibut steak, seared side up. Scatter the tomatoes, olives and courgettes evenly around the fish, spoon on the butter sauce and sprinkle with the coriander. Fold the parchment over the fish and vegetables and fold the edge over itself in small pleats to seal. Recipes by Transfer the papillotes to a baking sheet. Bake for 15 minutes, until slightly puffed. Snip the parchment open with scissors and serve.

Joint Health A joint is the place where the ends of two bones meet. In a healthy joint these ends are separated from each other by a layer of cartilage that prevents them from rubbing together. There are a few ways in which things can go wrong in the joint. The cartilage that should buffer the ends of the joints can be worn away. This is primarily wear and tear damage, and can be caused by sporting activities, jobs demanding high levels of physical activity or being overweight. The ends of the bones then rub painfully together causing inflammation and pain. (sometimes the bones go on to fuse together, causing immobility of the joint). This type of damage is usually identified as OSTEOARTHRITIS. The ends of the bones, the cartilage and the membrane around the joint can all be attacked by the body’s immune system if it goes wrong and starts mistaking the body’s own tissue as enemies. This is known as an autoimmune disease, and is identified as RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS. As the immune system is pretty good at attacking what it thinks are bugs and germs, the joints and surrounding tissues can become severely damaged. Arthritic-type pain can also be caused by uric acid and calcium crystals being deposited in joints, causing pain as they get in between the ends of the bones and may be identified as GOUT or a gouty form of arthritis.Certain foods may increase pain and stiffness. Avoid saturated animal fats, keeping your intake of red meats, dairy products and eggs to a minimum. Oily fish such as mackerel, salmon and sardines have a positive effect on inflammation. Take a fish oil supplement such as ESKIMO OIL or MOREPA if you don’t eat fish regularly. Green leafy vegetables, oats, sunflower and sesame seeds are all rich in MAGNESIUM which helps muscles to relax. People with low magnesium levels tend to feel more pain generally. Should you feel the need to take a magnesium supplement check out SOLO (one a day) , NATURES PLUS or VIRIDIAN. Some other natural supplements that may help include: GLUCOSAMINE: helps to maintain and renew one of the major constituents of cartilage, the layer of buffering material that should be found between the ends of the joints but can be damaged or worn away. Take 1500mg per day. ZINCUFLEX: relatively new product which contains ginger and curcumin to alleviate inflammation and pain with added vitamin C which contributes to normal function of bone and cartilage. FLEXOFYTOL: help to support joints, muscles and tendons. Ideal for anyone working out, either physical or repetive. REVIVE ACTIVE JOINTS: a unique combination of specific nutrients to tackle bone and connective tissue issues. Joint complex is unique in it deals with the issues plus the causes. World record holder of women’s marathon, Paula Radcliff, is a fan of this product and has said “for years I have struggled with Arthritis in my foot. I take REVIVE ACTIVE JOINT and now there is a lot less joint stiffness in the morning and a lot less swelling at the end of the day. Until next time, stay healthy.

to tell you that your mother and I are divorcing; forty-five years of misery is enough.” “Pop, what are you talking about?” the son screams. “We can’t stand the sight of each other any longer,” the old man says. “We’re sick of each other, and I’m sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in Chicago and tell her,” and he hangs up. Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone. “They’re not getting divorced if I have anything to do about it,” she shouts, “I’ll take care of this.” She calls Phoenix immediately, and screams at the old man, “You are NOT getting divorced. Don’t do a single thing until I get there. I’m calling my brother back, and we’ll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don’t do a thing, DO YOU HEAR ME?” and hangs up. The old man hangs up his phone and turns to his wife and says, “Okay, they’re coming for Thanksgiving...now what do we tell them for Christmas?”

A magician was working on a cruise ship in the Caribbean. The audience would be different each week, so the magician allowed himself to do the same tricks over and over again. There was only one problem: The captain’s parrot saw the shows each week and began to understand how the magician did every trick. Once he understood he started shouting in the middle of the show: “Look, it’s not the same hat!” “Look, he is hiding the flowers under the table!” Hey, why are all the cards the Ace of Spades?” The magician was furious but couldn’t do anything; it was, after all, the captain’s parrot. One day the ship had an accident and sank. The magician found himself on a piece of wood in the middle of the ocean -- with the parrot, of course. A COWBOY APPEARS BEFORE ST. PETER.

A cowboy appeared before St. Peter at the Pearly Gates. “Have you ever done anything of particular merit?” St. Peter asked. “Well, I can think of one thing,” the cowboy offered. “On a trip to the Big Horn Mountains out in Wyoming, I came upon a gang of bikers who were threatening a young woman. I directed them to leave her alone, but they wouldn’t listen. So, I approached the largest and most tattooed biker and smacked him in the face, kicked his bike over, ripped out his nose ring, and threw it on the ground.” I yelled, “Now, back off or I’ll kick the CR*P out of all of you” Saint Peter was impressed, “When did this happen?” “Couple of minutes ago.”

I’ve been having an affair with my secretary. I fell asleep in her bed and didn’t wake up until eight o’clock.” The wife glanced down at his shoes and said, “You liar! You’ve been playing golf!”

DID YOU KNOW THAT 27 PEOPLE DIE OF HEART ATTACK IN IRELAND EVERY DAY?

Heartwave Cardio Screening is returning to Tralee and Kenmare, Co Kerry with the revolutionary Bpro pulse wave analysis device, providing affordable and accurate heart and artery screenings. The Bpro and A-Pulse Casp has been developed by Healthstats in Singapore and can calculate a person’s central aortic systolic pressure (CASP) (blood pressure closest to the heart) accurately and non-invasively. The A-Pulse has been validated in clinical trials to have an accuracy of 99.17%, as compared to the angiogram. The BPro Cardio Pulse-Wave screening measures the aortic pressure as well as the flexibility of your arteries. Screenings are carried out by a health stats certified technician and a full printout of the results are given on the day which can be brought back to your own GP or cardiologist if necessary. The procedure is non-invasive and completely pain-free. The cost of an individual BPro test is €50 per adult with a 10% discount (€90) for a couple. There is also a 20% discount for groups of 12 or more people e.g. Sports Clubs, Business Screening etc. Heartfelt Cardio Screening will bring the Bpro to the following venues in, Co Kerry over the next few weeks: Wednesday 21st June, Ashe Hotel, Maine Street, Tralee, Co Kerry Tuesday 27th June - Brook Lane Hotel, Kenmare, Co Kerry Wednesday 28th June - Ashe Hotel, Maine Street, Tralee, Co Kerry Thursday 6th July - Ashe Hotel, Maine Street, Tralee, Co Kerry Appointments are essential and are available from 11am until late. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... “SOLID GOLD PARTY” IN THE BROGUE CELEBRATES MUSIC OF THE 60’S , 70’S & 80’S THIS WEEKEND WITH LOCAL FAVOURITE DJ CHRIS SHORTT

After a great response to the previous “ABSOLUTE 8O’S NIGHTS in the Brogue ,Next Sat night June 17th , its going to happen again with a small DIFFERENCE !! Yes , the Brogue Inn is playing host to ANOTHER late night “Solid Gold session with well -known local DJ Chris Shortt .”We wanted to try something a little bit different , as we are now having entertainment up to 7 nights a week in the Brogue “ says Fiona Kirby .So Chris came up with the idea of a “Solid Gold Night “ which we thought was brilliant . According to Chris , “these nights really rock .....People who I haven’t seen in years come out purely to hear the great songs of the 60’s 70’ & 80’s ....It really brings the great memories flooding back “ says Chris .... I grew up with that music , a lot of the crowd who come out on Sat night to the Brogue are very familiar with this music and even a lot of the younger generation in

their 20s and 30’s are really into the older Music .... we are talking Beatles , Bee Gees , The Rolling Stones , Wings , Pink Floyd , The Monkees Bob Marley , The Police , Deacon Blue , Simple Minds , Dire Straits , Abba , the list goes on ...Remember MT USA with Fab Vinny ...we are talking Michael Jackson , Van Halen, The Pointer Sisters , Starship , The Eagles , Fleetwood mac . Chris really knows his music , he has been the Rose Ball DJ for many many years now “ says Kevin Cotter .from the Brogue ..”.it only makes sense to have someone who knows the great music of the past , as well as Chris does , entertaining our customers rather than having someone working from a Playlist !” So remember next Sat June 17th is “Solid Gold Night with Chris Shortt in the Brogue

FROM DOLL HOUSE WINDOWS! Lorraine Carey from Fenit, Tralee, pictured with her daughter, Elise (10), at the National Library of Ireland, Dublin. Lorraine was a finalist in this year’s all-Ireland poetry competition organised by Trócaire with Poetry Ireland, on the theme of ‘Before the Storm’. Lorraine’s debut poetry collection ‘From Doll House Windows’ was launched at Listowel Writers’ Week, marking 2017 as a breakthrough year for this emerging poet. 2017 is the third year Lorraine attended the annual awards ceremony, this time to collect her own prize. clearly runs in the family, because in 2015 and 2016, Lorraine’s daughter Elise Carey-McGibney was a finalist in the Junior Primary School category of the competition, the first time when she was only 8 years old. Lorraine’s prize-winning poem, ‘Signs’, explores the knowingness of the natural world as it braces itself to prepare for an oncoming storm. In rich, vivid language, the poem signposts the coming darkness, as ‘trawlers retreat, return to port, moor along harbour walls, the water lines markers of a moon’s cycle, as they dip, climb and fall’ and how, along the coastline, ‘terns and gulls wrench worms in the lull Friday 16th June 2017

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... KERRY ROSE TRUCK RUN IN AID OF TLC4CF A GROUP of big-hearted Kerry hauliers are calling on their fellow truckers across the country to join them next month for a fundraising truck run in aid of cystic fibrosis charity, TLC4CF. Tony Nolan and Matt O’Regan have joined forces with families affected by CF to organise the Kerry Rose Truck Run on Saturday, July 15 – the ‘Rose’ being the flower associated with cystic fibrosis in Ireland. The event will see the convoy leave The Rose Hotel in Tralee at 1pm on July 15 and travel to Annascaul, Inch, Castlemaine, Milltown, Killarney, Castleisland and back to Tralee. Entry to event is €50 per truck, which includes dinner at the Rose Hotel after the run, a t-shirt and an event sticker for each driver. Additional t-shirts and meals for passengers are extra, and can be pre-booked when initially registering for the event via www.eventbrite. ie (Kerry-rose-truck-run-2017).

Drivers and their guests will also enjoy some lively entertainment in the hotel on Saturday night, with great spot prizes up for grabs. Secure car parking will be provided for the trucks next to the hotel, while management are also offering a reduced room rate for those wishing to stay overnight – just quote ‘Kerry Rose Truck Run’ when booking. To round off a great event, a number of the participating trucks will be on display for the public the following Sunday morning (July 16th) in the car park adjacent to the hotel. Entry is free but donations to the charity are welcome throughout the morning. All proceeds from the event will be donated to TLC4CF, a cystic fibrosis charity which has recently constructed a new CF inpatient and outpatient unit in the University Hospital Limerick for people with cystic fibrosis across Munster. Tony Nolan, who has raised over €100,000 for local charities through his annual

run over the past six years, is urging as many truckers as possible to sign up for the event to help make this year another success. For more information contact Tony Nolan on 087 2906923 or Matt O’Regan on 0876269954. Organisers of next month’s

TORQUING CARS! APPLE IOS 11 FEATURE COULD SAVE YOU BEING FINED €1,000 WHILE DRIVING

A NEW feature of Apple iOS 11 vows to stop distracted driving, which could stop you from receiving a hefty fine and penalty point endorsement. Apple announced that its new iOS 11 software at WWDC in San Jose with this new operating system bringing upgrades to Siri, Apple Pay and camera features. MORE BIKE LANES AND 20MPH ZONES AS EU DRAWS UP AMBITIOUS PLANS TO HALVE SERIOUS ROAD ACCIDENTS The European Union has set an ambitious new road safety target – to halve the number of serious injuries between the years 2020 and 2030. Plans drawn up in Valletta, Malta earlier this year were endorsed this week and will become part of the next EU strategy on road safety. The key target in the Valletta Declaration on Road Safety is to halve the number of people seriously hurt on the EU’s roads by 2030, compared to the figure in 2020. This is in addition to halving the numbers of road deaths in the EU by 2020 from the 2010 baseline – a target that “may not be met” unless “further efforts are made”, according to the document. One of the key areas of concern is walking and cycling, with pedestrians and cyclists being among the most vulnerable road users. The new plans include plans to “take cycling and walking into account in mobility plans”, with promises to “consider the inclusion of dedicated infrastructure”. The plans also include the expansion of lower speed limit zones, namely 30kph areas This document also confirms a commitment to the e-Call initiative, a system whereby cars automatically transmit an ‘SOS’ signal to the emergency services in the event of an accident, cutting response times. Mary Williams, CEO of safety charity Brake, said: “We warmly welcome today’s EU announcement, which will help focus efforts across Europe to reduce needless road deaths and injuries.

VW POLO 2017 - FIRST PICTURE OF LATEST CAR LEAKED AHEAD OF ITS WORLD DEBUT THIS WEEK NEW Volkswagen Polo world premiere will take place in Berlin on Friday 16th(today) and VW has just shared its first glimpse of the next generation hatchback. The Polo is one of the best-selling cars in the UK and this next generation vehicle will look to build on that success. VW has confirmed that the latest Polo is larger, more spacious and more comfortable than its predecessor. Klaus Bischoff, Head of Design Volkswagen Brand, explains about how the latest car was designed: “This Volkswagen can immediately be made out as the original of its class, but also as a completely new generation. From spy shots, that have surfaced online, the car’s front-end looks more rounded and grille narrower. Although slightly refined, VW seem to be sticking to the standard Polo formula with the new car’s looking similar to previous models. 36

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR HAPPY MONDAY, BLUE TUESDAY AND GOOD WEDNESDAY AT KENNEDY CUP: Mid June in Schoolboy’s soccer means only thing, the Kennedy Cup as the 32 Leagues in the country de-camp to the University of Limerick for a week. That’s 640 14 year olds plus coaches and back room staff as well as huge crowds of supporters from every League. Add to that there are a large number of scouts around so it is a big event in the young life of these footballers. And the word here is young – us adults involved must never forget that these are only 14 year old players and sometimes it doesn’t go the way we all want and hope for. These players put in a lot of effort to make it onto the team and each one of them gives their all. Some year’s things go your way and some years things don’t. Looking back two years and Kerry went all the way to win the tournament for the first time in 40 years. That does put some pressure on the following years. This year, as every year, we can’t fault the effort of the players. And it started very well on Monday in the first game when Kerry defeated Drogheda 5-2. They got off to a blistering start and were 3-0 up at half time. Cian Brosnan got the first direct from a corner, Daniel Okute got the second from a Cian Clancy pass and John O’Connor made it 3-0. Drogheda did have a few chances of their own with Kerry keeper Jack McGillicuddy making two good saves. Kerry put the game beyond their opponents when John O’Connor got his second. Drogheda hit back with two quick goals before an Aodhan O’Connor cracker from 30 yards wrapped up the scoring and the opening day win. Next up was Sligo/Leitrim whose reputation was well known before the tournament started as they had won the Galway Cup at 13’s last year. And credit to them they lived up to their reputation putting Kerry on the back foot from the start. Sean Broderick made a great save to keep the game scoreless before Sligo/Leitrim took the lead in the 16th minute through a Michael Lavin header. Kerry battled hard for an equaliser and came closest when Cian Clancy hit the crossbar from a free kick. However as the continued to chase

40

TRALEE ADVERTISER

the game Sligo/Leitrim got their second, again with Lavin on the mark, to take the three points. One of the most discussed aspects of the Kennedy Cup is where Leagues are seeded depending on their finishing position over the last three seasons. While this is the same for everybody and it needs to be done for the format of the tournament but there really is no comparison between a squad from three years ago and the present one. This was proved again when Sligo/ Leitrim came in a 3rd seeds in the Group yet the ended up topping it with 3 wins from their 3 games. Kerry needed to win their last game against North Tipperary to finish second in the Group and were really unlucky not to score in the first half with Cian Wright, Cian McMahon and Daniel Okute all going close. But is a tournament like this if you don’t take your chances you will get punished and Kerry did on the 42nd minute. They had to chase the game and were nearly caught out 10 minutes later but Caolan O’Connell made great clearance off the line. But North Tipperary got the second late on to take a 2-0 win. THE KNOCK- OUT STAGES: This put Kerry into the Shield Quarter finals on Wednesday when they faced South Tipperary. And while the opposition did take the lead early on with a header from free kick Kerry dominated the rest of the game. From defence to attack Kerry were the better side and hit back with two quick goals from Earnann Ferris and Cian Wright. Daniel Okwute made it 3-1 on the stroke of half time and Dylan Moriarty, playing his first game since picking up an injury on Monday wrapped up the scoring to set up a semi-final against Cavan / Monaghan on Thursday morning. We will bring you the rest of the story next week. TROJAN’S CILLIAN WINS IN THE UK: Trojan boxers Cillian Sypillane and Jamie McVeigh flew to Hull in the UK at the weekend to represent Munster in the Hull Cup, one of England’s most prestigious tournaments. Cillian boxed on Saturday in the semi-final of the 60kg division and dropped his opponent in the

Friday 16th June 2017

second round with a body and head combination to progress to the final. In the final the fight was stopped in the 3rd round due to his opponent having a cut. This meant the fight went to the judge’s score cards with Cillian taking the contest on a unanimous decision to be crowned the 2017 60kg Youth Hull Box Cup Champion. Trojan PRO Niamh Ball said the club was delighted for Cillian. “This is a great reward for all his hard work. To go to such a major tournament overseas and take on a beat the best is great from Cillian, his coaches and the club. Unfortunately Jaime was given a walk over as his opponent did not turn up but both boxers are doing Munster and Kerry proud”. Sean Walsh has weighted in for the National Junior Cadet Championships on Friday morning. Sean will box in his semi-final this Saturday morning. CONOR DOUBLES UP TO TOP THE ROAD RACE LEAGUE TABLE: Round 3 of cycling’s Road Race League was hosted by Tralee Lee Strand CC with the action around the Kilflynn circuit. After closing down the handicap it was Killarney CC’s Conor Kissane who sprinted clear to take his second win in a row in the League, having won the previous round in Gneeveguilla. He was followed home by George Doyle (Tralee Manor West iBike) who won the first round and is second on the overall table. Cian Leahy from O’Leary Stone Kanturk took 3rd to add points to his second place from Round 2 while 2 Tralee Manor West iBike riders took 4th and 5th with Ciaran Slattery ahead of Ross Culloty. The final points on the night went to Sliabh Luachra’s Pat Sheehan. Tom’s Double: O’Leary Stone Kanturk CC dominated the u16 race with Tom Moriarty coming home ahead of Sean Barrett and Denis Murphy. Killorglin’s Tadgh O’Shea stopped the Cork club taking the first four places as he finished ahead of Daniel Griffin. Sliabh Luachra’s Dan Murphy took the final League points in 6th. Patrick’s two in a row: In the u14’s the same three riders filled the top three spots for the second race in a row. Killarney CC’ s Patrick Galvin was again the emphatic winner. Ben Murphy (Sliabh Luachra)

and David Shine (O’Leary Stone Kanturk) swopped place from the previous week with Murphy taking the runner’s up spot on this occasion. Killarney CC’s riders took the next two slots with Ethan Slattery in 4th and Stefan Caulfield Drier in 5th. Kingdom’s Adam Lenihan took the 6 spot. Shane’s the man in the 12’s: Shane Galvin (Killarney CC) again took the u12’s win and top points and he was followed home Sliabh Luachra’s Denis Murphy. Killarney CC had 3 riders in the top 4 with Michael O’Callaghan and Brian Hanaffin finishing 3rd and 4th. Currow CC’s added to the points he took in Killorglin with a 5th place here followed by Killarney CC’s Shayane Daly. Next Up: This Thursday night it’s Round 2 of the Tralee Manor West iBike Time Trial. EX IMPERIAL’S STAR WINS WITH IRELAND: The Irish Senior Women’s basketball team, under coach Mark Scannell, won the second game of their Mardyke Series against Iceland. Having lost 63-69 in Cork the women with Aine McKenna and Emma Sherwood on the team defeated the same opposition at the National Basketball Arena 74-59. Superb performances from Mardyke Arena UCC Most Valuable Player Claire Melia, along with Claire Rockall and Mimi Clarke in particular, saw Ireland take an early 24-11 lead at the end of the first, which they stretched to a 40-26 point lead at the half. Despite a run from Iceland in the second half, Ireland continued to dominate the scoreboard, with good shooting from Danielle O’Leary and Amy Waters adding to the tally to win in convincing fashion. McKenna, from Duagh, ended the game with 5 points while Sherwood from Farranfore and a former Tralee Imperials star came off the bench to take 3 valuable rebounds. In the first game both Kerry girls also got on the scoring sheets. SO MUCH FOR SUMMER SPORT! The summer has yet to reach us as was proved by the fact that the Tralee Bay Swimming Club had to postpone Round 2 of their World Series, sponsored by Waterworld in Rock Street. This was due to the strong winds and the club hopes to get the swimmers into the water this week. TWO AND FOUR LEGGED CHAMPIONS: This Friday night the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium hosts one of its biggest nights of the year with the final of the Kerry GAA supporters club Race Of Champions plus a top class supporting card of various stake finals. There are lots of other attractions including a penalty shoot-out between “Gooch” Coopers club Dr. Crokes All Ireland senior club Champions and Darren O’ Sullivan’s club Glenbeigh/Glencar

ST BRENDAN’S OAKPARK COMMUNITY GAMES NEWS: U10 Football: The weather may not have been the best but the standard of football in the U10 county competition certainly was! All boys played fantastically to beat Killarney in their opening match. They were narrowly beaten by Fossa and again by eventual winners of the group Moyvane/ Knocknagoshel. This is a young side, many of whom are underage again next year, so well done boys and you should be all very proud of your performance, from the goalie right up to the full forward line. Pa Laide and Alan Cantwell, who trained and managed the team, deserve a special word of praise. Thanks to the many parents and supporters who cheered on the team on the day. Team: Rory Lynch, Liam O’Connor, Brendan Maunsell, David Lynch, Barry Laide, Danny Kingston, Jack Diggins, Ryan Sheehy, Seán Cantwell, Eoin Mangan, Oisín Ty O’Carroll, Daragh Morris, Jack Shanahan, Jack Costello, Cathal Fitzgerald. Athletics: All athletes going to An Ríocht track Castleisland on June 24th/25th are now busy training either for their individual or relay event. This is always a great but busy day in Castleisland so athletes should ensure they arrive early to allow for traffic delays, to register and to get their number and jersey. You will not be allowed compete without a jersey and number, details of our number in the parade will be known later in the week and all athletes should keep an eye on the notes and Facebook for any updates. KERRY PITCH & PUTT NEWS: This Saturday and Sunday all eyes turn to the ESB club in Cork for the Munster Stroke-Play Finals, here Kerry have fourteen finalists. On Saturday Tralee’s Lisa O’Connor will play in the Ladies Junior grade in a field of twenty-two players. Also on the same day the Gent’s Junior’s will compete with five Kerry players made up of a Tralee quartet of Pa Byrne, David Hobbert, Tommy Higgins and Tim Scannell along with Newmarket’s Chris Fleming. On Sunday the Inters and Seniors will compete with five Intermediates including a Tralee trio of Jason Cregan, Alan Hobbert and Danny O’Leary along

with Deerpark’s John O’Brien and Listowel’s Chris Curran. The seniors will have three competing with the Deerpark duo of Damien Fleming and John McGrath along with Tralee’s Tony Blake. Last Sunday the Deerpark Pitch & Putt Club hosted the Kerry County Stroke-Play Finals. While the weather was wintry at best with high winds over fifty players competed. In the ladies grade it was local Sheila O’Donoghue who won out with Tralee’s Lisa O’Connor pipping Sheila’s sister Eileen Switzer on back eighteen for the second spot. The Junior grade produced something of a dream result with Listowel player Killian O’Gorman posting a seven over total only to be beaten by Gleneagle and County Board stalwart Sean O’Brien who returned a fantastic five over total to win a County title for the very first time. The Intermediate grade where again a huge field of twenty two players competed Deerpark’s John O’Brien returned a eight under score to lead however with many players yet to come in the defending champion Tralee’s Jason Cregan posted a nine under total to win the Intermediate title by one. In the Senior grade another first was developing with Deerpark’s John McGrath coming in with thirteen under par pipping his club mate Damien Fleming on back eighteen. It was Damien’s playing partner County Board Chairman Listowel’s Declan McCarron who had eclipsed the field with a brilliant seventeen under par to win his first County title becoming the Kerry Senior Stroke-Play Champion 2017. CYCLE AGAINST SUICIDE PARTNERS WITH INTERNATIONAL ROSE OF TRALEE FESTIVAL FOR 2ND YEAR: On Saturday, August 19th, the community of Tralee will once again host a 50km cycle as part of the Cycle Against Suicide Spin-Off series. A Spin-Off is a locally organised cycle that takes place monthly after the main 14-day Cycle around the island of Ireland ends. The events are locally organised, owned by the community and championed by Cycle Against Suicide ‘Local Leaders’. A Spin-Off has all the colour, energy and fun of the annual Cycle but is packed into a single day. The Tralee Spin-Off promises to be a particularly special event. It will depart from Austin Stacks GAA Club, in Rock Street, at 2.30pm on Saturday, August 19th. The 50km route will once again visit the picturesque coastal village of Ballyheigue, where entertainment, refreshments and a mental wellbeing presentation will take place. The cyclists will then have the tremendous honour of leading in the 2017 International Rose of Tralee parade. There are many ways to become involved. If you would prefer to volunteer rather than cycle, the Tralee Spin-Off Organising
