GROOMING TIPS FROM THE BARBER...

M: 0873931388

Your skin and facial hair + Munster Rugby launch Inaugural Donal Walsh Live Life Schools Blitz at Tralee Rugby Club

Whether you have a bushy beard or just like a bit of designer stubble, if there’s hair on your face, it will affect the skin underneath. Facial hair wicks moisture away from your skin, which can leave it dry and flaky. This can lead to beard dandruff and other unsightly facial features.

+ Kerry U21s advance to final against Cork after outscoring Limerick in Tralee

Exfoliate

+ Comóradh 1916 celebrations planned for Easter Weekend + Enable Ireland to host Family Fun Day on Easter Monday in Tralee Wetlands. + Tralee Sailing Club host Paralympic Sailing Team this Saturday Night + Glenderry School wins Lee Strand Cash 4 Schools Draw + Stacks out score Strand Road in local derby, Senior Town League + Over 800 runners take part in Tralee International Marathon last weekend + Sweeney Todd secures full House at Siamsa Tire + Fels Point rebranding as 'Rose Hotel' well under way + Austin Stacks Stadium new pitch gets high praise from the experts

Use a facial scrub to remove the dead skin cells from underneath your beard. Take time doing this. Really focus on the skin underneath and use a product that doesn’t leave your skin dry.

Moisturise

As we said, your beard can dry your skin out, so a moisturiser is essential. You can use your regular moisturiser, just massage it in, underneath the hair, also making sure any unsightly white residue on the beard is gone. You can also add a beard oil for fragrance and a glossy, more conditioned appearance.

Shampoo

You need to shampoo your beard for general cleanliness. Look for an anti-bacterial shampoo. You need to get moisture down to the skin and keep it there while also conditioning the beard. You can use a 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner, however make sure it doesn’t include soap, so it won’t dry out your skin.

+ Gaudinos new Restaurant all set to open shortly on Castle St + Scoil Eoin has Youtube hit on its hands "One Hundred Years Ago " + New look Meadowlands Hotel is 'just the ticket' for Kerry GAA + Greyhound Stadium invite you to Martys Party as they re-launch Restaurant on April 2nd

Keep it short

A shorter beard is easier to maintain (even though you have to trim it more often). It’s also simpler to rub your products into the skin if you don’t have to rummage through thick facial hair. You can comb or brush your beard if you want it to look neater and this can help to exfoliate too. However, don’t over do it or you’ll damage the hair.

+ Hospital Parking charges raise the heckles at Tralee Municipal monthly meeting + Kerry Senior Team team take the honours v Mayo in Castlebar after 5 years + Strand Road players David Moran & Tommy Walsh hit the catwalk in Corks Ernst & Young 1916 Fashion Show

LEGAL CORNER

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES Health and Safety made easy

Jonathan runs a business but is anxious to ensure that his premises is up to standard for health and safety - how would he best go about this? Health and Safety law sets out legal requirements for workplaces that include doing a hazard analysis and doing a risk assessment on hazards in the work place and setting out the level of risk attached to these hazards e.g. high medium or low and then setting out is needed in the workplace to eliminate or minimise these risks. The Health and Safety Authority website have a really easy section called www.besmart.ie that allows businesses of all types to do a written risk assessment and safety statement by simply filling in a prepopulated form online. There are videos explaining what are risk assessments and safety statements and also a video about how to work with the simple safety be smart format online to effectively complete the safety statement. Once one goes into the form one enters the type of business and then typical lists of hazards for that type of business come up and one can tick off the ones that apply to your particular business. One cannot emphasize enough the importance of health and safety requirements as if they are not followed and accidents result in the workplace then this can result in criminal prosecutions and expensive liability claims. Whereas by doing the risk assessments and safety statements and following up on what is required to be done in the safety statement in relation to improving health and safety in the workplace this can reduce the number of accidents in the workplace and thereby reduce insurance costs, reduce costs to the business, increase staff morale and improve productivity. For more information see www.hsa.ie and www.besmart.ie Both employers and employees have duties in relation to health and safety in the workplace and the employer needs to ensure that everybody in the workplace is working together to make the workplace as safe as possible. Consultation with staff in this area is essential. Health and Safety as an issue did not begin today or yesterday or even with our 2005 and earlier 1989 acts as witnessed by these health and safety quotes: One earnest worker can do more by personal suggestion to prevent accidents than a carload of safety signs. ~Making Paper, January 1923, edited by E.R. Brown Health and safety quips: “Out of this nettle, danger, we pluck this flower, safety. ~William Shakespeare, Henry IV, Part I” If you have a legal query or need further information on any item addressed in this column please send in your query to mirs@gofree.indigo.ie Miriam McGillycuddy, Solicitor, Derryana, Ballyard, Tralee, County Kerry. REFURBISHED MEADOWLANDS HOTEL TRALEE SPONSOR NEW KERRY GAA TICKET VAN MEADOWLANDS Hotel has teamed up with Kerry GAA to sponsor the brand new ticket van which will be located outside Austin Stack Park, Fitzgerald Stadium and other venues for Kerry and county club games. The recently renovated family-run 4-Star hotel on the Listowel Road, Tralee has long been a supporter of the Kerry teams and is also the official hotel partner to the County Board since 2015. The brand new ticket van has been kitted out with stateof-the-art hardware and software to make it easy for match-goers to buy tickets and to make it more efficient when entering venues on match days. The General Manager of Meadowlands Hotel, Siobhán Ní Mhathúna, said: “We have a long association with Kerry GAA in being the Tralee hotel partner to Kerry teams and as proud Kerry supporters. The new ticket van which will be seen by thousands of people throughout the year affords us a great opportunity to showcase the Meadowlands Hotel as a great place to stay and dine in style.” The Chairman of Kerry County Board, Patrick O’Sullivan, said: “Kerry GAA are delighted to have Meadowlands Hotel as our brand new Ticket Van sponsor. Patrons are by now, hopefully, becoming accustomed to fully ticketed games, mobile ticket outlets, “Bosca” Terminals and cashless turnstiles. All of this has produced a higher level of revenue assurance (and indeed revenue ) evidenced in our accounts over the last two years.” The Meadowlands Hotel has created a fresh new look by using brighter colours and lighting with a splash of colour, while the contemporary and stylish design compliments the traditional and cosy atmosphere which has been maintained throughout the hotel. The Ó Mathúna Family wish all Kerry teams the best of luck in 2016 and they are looking forward to welcoming everyone to The Meadowlands Hotel for holiday breaks, weddings, special occasions & parties. For more information or accommodation, conference, wedding and party bookings, please contact info@meadowlandshotel.com. 8

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: CENSUS 2016 Question Can you explain how the census works? Do I have to complete the form? Answer The Census of Population counts every person who is in the State on a particular date. It establishes the size of the population in the State and it also helps to provide an accurate measure of population changes due to inward and outward migration. The census takes place every 5 years and is carried out by the Central Statistics Office (CSO). The next census will be on Sunday 24 April 2016. The census counts everyone who is present in the State on the designated night, including visitors who usually live abroad. Under the Statistics Act 1993, you are legally obliged to complete and return the census form. If you refuse to provide this information, or if you deliberately provide false information, you may be fined. Teams of enumerators deliver census forms to every household and to every other type of place where people may be present on census night (such as hotels, guesthouses, hospitals, ships). Everyone who is actually on the premises on census night, including visitors, should be counted. Census enumerators call to all households to deliver forms before census night and then call back to collect completed forms. Enumerators all carry ID and can help if you have difficulty completing the form. The form includes a wide range of questions, including age, marital status, sex, place of birth, level of education, type of employment and housing characteristics. All the information that you give on the census form is confidential. The CSO only uses it for statistical purposes and no other organisation (including government departments or agencies) can access information from the census that would identify you in any way. When you have completed the form on census night, sign the declaration at the end of it and keep it safe until your enumerator calls back to collect it. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

Bexblah Beauty

This page is sponsored by Munster Robes & Kitchens

Hello my beautiful friends, I hope you’re having a fantastic week! This week I will be talking about something a bit different… Here are my ‘Ways To Make Yourself Feel Fab!’ Sometimes, we get so caught up in the busyness of life that we forget how important it is to make OURSELVES feel amazing. Fear no more, this little list will help you to feel FAB! • TAKE CARE OF YOUR SKIN: When my skin feels good I feel better about myself, I always make an extra effort to take care of my skin, use facemasks, exfoliate, moisturise and all the little things that make my skin soft and glowy. Google some DIY Facemasks if you don’t have any at home. • PAINT YOUR NAILS/GET THEM DONE I don’t know about you, but when my nails look fab I feel fab! Because I wasn’t blessed with the gift of being able to make my nails look in any way decent, I get mine done. But if you can paint your nails without them looking like a three year old did them, by all means do that! • DO A HAIR MASK When I have a good hair day I feel a million times better! I love putting a hair mask in my hair for that extra softness and shine. If you want to use a salon hair mask I 100% recommend Redken or Kerastase, or again, you can go DIY and use some good old fashioned Coconut Oil. • DO SOME EXERCISE It has been proven that exercise makes you feel amazing as it releases happy hormones. What better way to make yourself feel FAB than working on number one, YOU! • GET A NEW PAIR OF PJS This is one of my absolute favourite things to do if I feel crappy. Head into Pennys, grab yourself a new pajama set complete with fluffy socks, go home and just CHILL! FAB. • DO SOMETHING JUST FOR YOU Whether it’s learning a new skill, reading a book, or working on a project you’ve wanted to start for AGES, doing something just for you is a sure way to make you feel FAB! So that’s it for this week! I hope you all enjoyed my little haul/review. Have a great weekend and I’ll be back here next week with more beauty related goodness! If you want to contact me for an event, collaboration or just to say hi you can email me at Bexblahbeauty@gmail.com or through any social media, FACEBOOK: Bexblah Beauty, TWITTER: @Bexblah, INSTAGRAM: @Bexblah.

HELPING HAND WITH HAYFEVER

While we all welcome the longer brighter evenings and it may encourage us to enjoy a little time outdoors in the fresh air, unfortunately, it can cause misery for the 15-20% of hayfever suffers in Ireland. Also known as Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis, hayfever is an allergic reaction to airborne substances, such as tree, flower and grass pollen that gets into the upper respiratory passages, nose, sinus, throat and also the eyes. The pollen that enters the bloodstream through the tissue of the throat, lungs and gut, is regarded by our immune systems as foreign and potentially dangerous, so it rushes to defend it, resulting in the release of lots of histamines. Histamine irritates the respiratory passage causing swelling and inflammation that produce typical hayfever symptoms, including itchy watery eyes, a bunged up or runny nose, frequent sneezing and coughing. Many people take anti-histamines and other medications which offer relief, alternatively there are plenty of natural remedies available, which can help to ease the unpleasant symptoms of hayfever. SALT PIPE – can bring wonderful relief for hayfever suffers. It contains micron-sized particles of salt sources from the Praid mines in Romania. When these tiny salt particles are inhaled they penetrate the respiratory system to achieve beneficial effects. Safe for both adults and children, is best used for 15-25minutes daily POLLINOSAN – The anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine action of this complex usually kicks in within 20-30 minutes to ease the uncomfortable hayfever symptoms HAYBAND – a reusable drug free alternative which can offer season long relief. Suitable for both adults and children, it is worn on the upper arm, placed on the acupressure points it is believed to alleviate the symptoms of hayfever. PLANTAGO - Ideal for symptoms of catarrhal congestion and helps clear build up of excess mucous. EUPHRASIA – homeopathic remedy for watery, streaming eyes. It is also worth checking out some of the effective homeopathic remedies available to tackle hayfever symptoms, such as NELSONS POLLENNA or NEW VISTAS HAYFEVER Until next time, stay healthy.

Bexblah Fitness! HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK. THIS WEEK I’M TALKING MOTIVATION AND SPORTS BRAS. FINDING MOTIVATION

It can be so so hard sometimes to find motivation, and if you think anyone has motivation to go to the gym all the time, you are wrong. When you want to start a healthy lifestyle, whether it’s to lose weight, gain muscle, or just look amazing in a bikini you firstly have to make sure that you 100% want it and that you’re doing it for you, otherwise it won’t happen. Once you get that initial motivation it’s great but what really matters is whether or not you push yourself when you’re not feeling motivated. I’ve had a pretty bad last few weeks. Last week I decided I would take control of myself and my body, because absolutely no one can take that away from me. Once I decided that in my head it’s like something changed. I can’t explain it. I have been working the last 8 days in a row, I finished work this evening and felt tired, unmotivated and just wanted to sleep. I had been to the gym the last two nights, I thought ‘I’ll just go tomorrow’. I could have easily went into bed, but I didn’t. I pushed past those unmotivated feelings and went anyway. I came home, put on my gym gear, played some really loud music and went to the gym. And you know what? I felt amazing after! Because you will never regret a workout. I knew how much I didn’t want to go and how tired I felt but I went anyway. And that is the difference between people who get results and those who don’t. People who get results aren’t motivated all the time, they have their days where they just don’t want to, but they do it anyway. So if you look at someone and think, “I want their motivation”, you already have it, because your body is all in YOUR hands, just like their body is in THEIRS.

SPORTS BRAS:

An alarming 56%* of women experience breast pain when exercising, yet many ladies are still not wearing the most supportive sports bras. One of the main benefits to wearing a sports bra is the support you get. Although it’s important to size it right – a sports bra that fits too tight is the worst thing ever – it can still substantially flatten out large breasts. As you will see, this is extremely important in quite a number of instances. In situations where you don’t want to bounce, sports bras are important. You really need to wear a sports bra if you’re working out and exercising. This way you’ll get all the support you need. The amount of comfort you get provides another great benefit to wearing a sports bra. There’s no underwire, you don’t have straps digging into your shoulders, or hooks digging into your bag. Because you get side support as well as breast support, there’s no worry of overlapping anywhere either. Sports bras are also able to help control and regulate the temperature of your body. Because most of them are made of soft cotton blends, they’re not going to make you get quite as hot and sweaty.

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2016

The many uses of Wild Garlic

Wild garlic will appear on restaurant menus in the coming days and weeks. It is easily found in woodlands and river banks . Very easy to use and has a great flavour .If you ever thought about doing a bit of foraging it is one of the easiest vegetables to find and use . Its not as strong as ‘normal ‘ garlic .....more like chive with a garlic hint and it can be used for a ton of things . From a wild garlic pesto to soups into your mash potato or put some leaves into olive oil and a few days later... you have garlic oil! Also the flowers on the wild garlic can be eaten in salads or pickled.

POTATO AND WILD GARLIC SOUP INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • •

45g (1½oz) butter 150g (5oz) peeled and chopped potatoes 110g (4oz) peeled and chopped onion salt and freshly ground pepper 900ml (1½ pint) water or home-made chicken stock or vegetable stock 300ml (½ pint) creamy milk 150g (5oz) chopped wild garlic leaves (Allium Ursinum) Garnish

METHOD

Wild garlic flowers Melt the butter in heavy bottomed saucepan, when it foams, add the potatoes and onions and toss them until well coated. Sprinkle with salt and freshly ground pepper. Cover and sweat on a gentle heat for 10 minutes. Meanwhile prepare the wild garlic leaves. When the vegetables are almost soft, but not coloured, add the stock and milk, bring to the boil and cook until the potatoes and onions are fully cooked. Add the wild garlic and boil with the lid off for 4-5 minutes with the lid off approximately until the wild garlic is cooked. Do not overcook or the soup will lose its fresh green colour. Puree the soup in a liquidiser or food processor. Taste and correct seasoning. Serve sprinkled with a few wild garlic flowers

PICKLED WILD GARLIC

A very straight forward way of pickling your own wild garlic which can then be kept right through the winter for jazzing up any dish.

INGREDIENTS • • • •

Wild garlic 1 part vinegar 1 part water 1/2 tsp. sieved alum*

METHOD 1. 2. 3. 4.

Wash garlic well and cut off the green part which can be used in soups. Pack white parts in mason jars and to each add 1/2 tsp. alum and the one part vinegar and one part water. Seal and refrigerate and these are ready after two to three weeks to make your meals taste like a feast. They will keep like this all winter

*Alum- in it’s chemical form is potassium aluminum sulfate. Granulated alum is commonly used in pickling recipes to help keep the pickle crispy. This would be your most common use. It is also found in some baking powders for it’s acidity

MEET THE IRISH PARALYMPIC SAILING TEAM IN TRALEE BAY SAILING CLUB THIS SAT NIGHT !

This Saturday( March 19th), Tralee Bay Sailing Club is hosting a fundraiser for the Irish Paralympic Sailing Team who has qualified to compete in the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in September of this year. They will be the only Paralympic sailors to represent Ireland in the Games. Come and meet the Irish Paralympic Sailing Team trio of Killorglin man Ian Costelloe, Corkman John Twomey and Austin O’Carroll from Dublin for an evening of fun and entertainment. John Twomey is the only man in the world to be competing in his 11th consecutive Paralympic Games. Ian Costelloe will be attending his second Paralympic Games and Austin O Carroll will be attending his first Paralympic Games. The Irish Paralympic Sailing Team is seeking public support and funds to enable them in their pursuit to successfully represent Ireland at the Paralympics in September. To date the only funding the team has received is a total of €36,000 per annum (€12,000 per crew member) from the Irish Sports Council. The estimated budget for their campaign in 2016 is estimated to exceed €120,000. The public are invited to join us as we celebrate and support our Irish Paralympic Sailors on their journey to Rio in just six months time. By popular demand Tralee Bay Sailing Club will be hosting their second Tiller Tart event (think Rose of Tralee with a difference!) to raise much needed funds for the Irish Paralympic Team. Place your bets/sponsor your favourite to be crowned as the “Tiller Tart of TBSC 2016”. Supper food will be available on the evening. So rally up your friends and family for a fun evening out in Tralee Bay Sailing Club, Fenit on this Saturday March 19th! Doors Open at 7pm. 26

TOP MARKS FOR NEW ‘MEANDERING’ PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE IN PERTH Classy design award of the week has to go to Arup Associates for its new “meandering” pedestrian and cycling bridge which has been completed over the inlet of the Swan River in Perth, Australia. The 110-metre-long cablestayed bridge has a wavy eucalyptus-wood deck shaped like an elongated S, framed by a pair of leaning steel arches. The new bridge is part of a revitalisation of Elizabeth Quay, a 2.7 hectare inlet in the city’s central business district, that features a promenade, housing, shops, offices and restaurants. Now that the recession is allegedly over here, maybe we too can begin to dream of great design for our urban public spaces again. And instead of sprawling ever outwards with single unit accommodation, why not take a leaf from these really creative examples of urban regenerations on reclaimed ground, or look upwards to higher density schemes.

ITALY HAS HIGHEST RETAIL RENTS

They boast some of the smartest and most expensive shops, so it is little surprise that Europe’s most luxurious high streets recorded another year of robust rental growth in 2015. Leading the parade was Via Monte Napoleone in Milan, where rents rose by 41.2 per cent, helping to make it the fastest-growing high street rental market in Europe in the fourth quarter of last year, according to DTZ associate Cushman & Wakefield. Not far behind was Via Condotti in Rome, where rents rose by 37.5 per cent over the year.

The widow, however, says that she always thought her husband looked his best in blue, and that she wants him in a blue suit. She gives the mortician a blank check and says, ‘I don’t care what it costs, but please have my husband in a blue suit for the viewing.’ The woman returns the next day and to her delight, she finds her husband dressed in a gorgeous blue suit with a subtle chalk stripe; the suit fits him perfectly. She says to the mortician, ‘Whatever this cost, I’m very satisfied.. You did an excellent job and I’m very grateful. How much did you spend?’ To her astonishment, the mortician presents her with the blank cheque, ‘There’s no charge.’ ‘No, really, I must compensate you for the cost of that exquisite blue suit,’ she says. ‘Honestly, ma’am,’ the mortician says, ‘it cost nothing. You see, a deceased gentleman of about your husband’s size was brought in shortly after you left yesterday, and he was wearing an attractive blue suit. I asked his wife if she minded him going to his grave wearing a black suit instead, and she said it made no difference as long as he looked nice.’ ‘So I just switched the heads.’

their grins a bit less vibrant. “Once a month?” A few hands tepidly go up. Then he asks, “OK, how about once a year?” One man in the back jumps up and down, jubilantly waving his hands. The therapist is shocked—this disproves his theory. “If you make love only once a year,” he asks, “why are you so happy?” The man yells, “Today’s the day!”

WHAT DOES IT MEAN “THE REST OF THE WORLD?

A worldwide survey was conducted by the UN. The only question asked was: “Would you please give your honest opinion about solutions to the food shortage in the rest of the world?” The survey was a huge failure. In Africa they didn’t know what “food” meant. In Eastern Europe they didn’t know what “honest” meant. In Western Europe they didn’t know what “shortage” meant. In China they didn’t know what “opinion” meant. In the Middle East they didn’t know what “solution” meant. In South America they didn’t know what “please” meant. And in the USA they didn’t know what “the rest of the world” meant.

WHY YOU SHOULD MAKE LOVE ONCE A YEAR

A therapist has a theory that couples who make love once a day are the happiest. So he tests it at a seminar by asking those assembled, “How many people here make love once a day?” Half the people raise their hands, each of them grinning widely. “Once a week?” A third of
the audience members raise their hands,

RENAULT REVEALS PLANS FOR ALPINE SPORTS CAR BRAND

HISTORIC marque to be revived, with first model launched in 2017.Renault has announced plans for its Alpine brand, the historic sports car marque that has been dormant since 1995. At the same time, the company unveiled a concept car, the Alpine Vision, which will be the basis of a production model to go on sale in 2017. Alpine, was originally founded by Jean Rédélé, a Dieppe garage proprietor, who began to achieve considerable success in post-war motorsport. The company was bought in 1973 by Renault. Alpine continued to build cars under Renault’s aegis, such as the 110, 310, GTA in the 70s and 80s. The 610, originally launched in 1991, was the last car to be built by Alpine, with production ending in 1995. Since then, the Dieppe factory has been used for producing RenaultSport variants of models such as the Clio and Megane. The Alpine Vision is powered by a new four-cylinder turbocharged engine, which is mid-mounted, drives the rear wheels and enables the car to achieve 0-62mph in less than 4.5 seconds. Its styling - which brings to mind the Porsche 718 Cayman and Alfa Romeo 4C - is sharp and contemporary, and should appeal to those in the market for a two-seat sports coupe. Prices are expected to be somewhere in the region of £40,000.

TORQUING CARS! THE £54,000 FORD CAPRI: CLASSIC CAR WITH JUST 936 MILES ON THE CLOCK SELLS FOR RECORD PRICE

With their distinctive ‘go faster’ stripe, sloping rear end and c-pillar, they were the motor of choice for young executives, boy-racers and even Del Boy Trotter. And more than 30 years after their 1970s and 80s heyday, the Ford Capri still holds a place in some drivers’ hearts, with one 1987 model selling for a world record £54,000. The near-showroom fresh Capri 280 ‘Brooklands’ had covered just 936 miles since it rolled off the production line nearly three decades ago, and was snapped up by one very happy fan at a Silverstone auction last month. The Capri 280 ‘Brooklands’ sold at the Race Retro Classic Car sale, smashed its original estimate of about £38,000 and sold for the same price as a lower-end Jaguar E-Type - or a brand new Jaguar F-Type coupe. The sale of the The D-registration V6 coupe put down another marker in the astonishing rise of fast Fords in recent years, when it went under the hammer - setting a record price for a Capri, according to Silverstone Auctions. Billed as ‘the car you always promised yourself’, the Capri was conceived in 1969 and quickly became something of a cultural icon. It had been designed to be the equivalent of the famous Mustang for the European market, with models coming in every price point being built at Ford’s British plants in Dagenham and Halewood. The car’s cool credentials were boosted with frequent appearances on ITV’s The Professionals, with Martin Shaw’s Doyle driving a gold Mark III, and Lewis Collins’s Bodie a silver version. However, the car developed something of a boy-racer image, not helped when a lime-green 1980 Mark III model, complete with tiger-print seats appeared in a 1991 Only Fools And Horses episode where it was sold to Del by Boycie, and promptly dubbed the ‘Pratmobile’ by an unimpressed Rodney. After selling nearly 1.9million units, Ford put the brakes on the Capri’s production in 1987, but it is now seen as one of the firm’s most iconic cars, with aficionados still racing to buy the classic models whenever one comes up for sale. The Ford Capri 280, known as the ‘Brooklands’, was a final version of the legendary coupe of the 1970s and 1980s and featured a raft of special features, along with a 2.8 litre V6 engine. Just 1,038 of the cars were made.

VAUXHALL ASTRA NAMED EUROPEAN CAR OF THE YEAR

Vauxhall’s new British-built Astra was crowned European Car of the Year 2016 in Geneva The latest incarnation of Vauxhall’s family hatchback was revealed as the winner at a ceremony on the eve of the Geneva motor show. The Astra beat the Volvo XC90, Audi A4, BMW 7 Series, Jaguar XE, Mazda MX-5 and Skoda Superb in the vote of a jury made up of 58 motoring journalists from 22 European countries. The hatchback is built at Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port plant and Vauxhall said on its launch that this guaranteed 2,000 jobs in Cheshire for the next decade. The new Vauxhall Astra is the latest in a line that dates back to 1979 and has proved a firm favourite with Britain’s motorists in the hotly-contested family hatchback sector.

NEW CAR REGISTRATIONS SOARED BY 37PC LAST MONTH,

The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) statistics for February show a 37pc increase (to 21,625). Registrations for the year-to-date are up 35pc (to 61,350 compared with 45,586 for the first two months of 2015). SIMI Deputy Director General Brian Cooke says the figures “clearly indicate” consumer and business confidence remain strong. The five top-selling brands this year are: Hyundai, Toyota, Ford, Volkswagen and Nissan. The top-five selling models are: The Hyundai Tucson, Ford Focus, Volkswagen Golf, Skoda Octavia and Toyota Corolla. Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) are up 39pc so far this year.

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR MORE SOCCER HISTORY IN TRALEE THIS SUNDAY: First Ever Soccer Game in Tralee: Did you know that the first game of soccer in to be played in Kerry took place in 1894 – yes 1894!!. The game was between the Tralee based Durnham Light Infantry Regiment and workers from the Commercial Cable Company in Waterville. Interestingly the South Kerry workers wanted to play cricket but the soldiers were from working class areas in the UK. While cricket was played by ‘ordinary’ people in Ireland it was an upper crust game in the UK and the soldiers didn’t know the game. So they agreed to play soccer and so the ‘Beautiful Game’ made its debut in The Kingdom. I don’t know the result so if there are any soccer historians reading this and know who won please let me know. Kerry’s only Senior International Cap winner: Another nugget of Kerry soccer history with a Tralee connection is the fact that the only man to play Senior International soccer was born in the town in 1942. In 1963 the League of Ireland beat the Football League and Tony O’Connell was the star man. He then earned his first full international cap against Spain in October 1966 winning two in all. O’Connell played for Bohemians, Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers and in that game in 63 he tormented the legendary Jimmy Armfield up and down the right wing. O’Connell is also the man responsible for sponsor’s names being on jerseys! He was the first in Ireland or the UK to do this when he put his company name ‘Jodi’ on Bohs jerseys. (The stand at Dalymount Park is still known as the Jodi Stand). He also put money into Crusaders which helped them win two Northern Ireland Leagues in the 1990’s. History making Sunday as U17 League of Ireland comes to Tralee: Following on from the Kerry u21 team and Tralee Dynamos in the u19’s and A Championship Airtricity SSE League of Ireland soccer is back in Kerry. Getting to this stage has taken a lot of work by the KDL, led by John Regan and Sean O’Keeffe with the backing of Kerry’s RDO Darren Ahern. The FAI has been focusing very much on the Player Pathway and the u17’s is the logical next step to connect the work being done by the Schoolboys Girls League up to 16’s with Junior soccer run by the KDL. Kerry soccer is on a high at the moment since the Kennedy Cup win last June and with a number of players making waves overseas. Over 60 players tried out for the Kerry u17’s squad being managed by Brendan Hogan, Danny Diggins and Trevor Nagle. The final squad of 20 has been working very hard in the buildup to Sunday when Cork City are the visitors with a 2pm kick off. Other big names in the Elite Southern Division are Shamrock Rovers, Waterford United, UCD, Limerick and Bray Wanderers. This first season will be a big learning curve for all involved and will be more about the development and progress of the players rather than fully results driven. 12 of the players are underage again next season so this is a project for the long term.

However that’s for the future – let’s all come out and support the Kerry u17’s at Mounthawk Park this Sunday, March 20th, at 2pm. SECOND ALL WEATHER PITCH FOR THE KDL: At the launch of the u17’s Kerry District League Secretary John Regan announced that a second All Weather pitch will be installed at Mounthawk Park. With over two months of wet weather the astro-turf have been a godsend for both Leagues and has been used at almost full capacity for the last few months. Therefore converting the second pitch to another All Weather is the logical next move. These are certainly exciting times in Kerry soccer. TRALEE BOXING CLUB POINTS THE WAY TO MUNSTER GLORY: Kerry boxers were in action in the South Side Boxing Club looking to progress to the Munster Championship Finals that are set to take place at the same venue next weekend. A number of Kerry clubs will be represented with Tralee Boxing Club leading the way with 5 fighters qualified -Daniel Burke at 36kg, Jonathan McCarthy 39kg, Patrick McCarthy 44kg, Richard McCarthy 52kg and Robin McCarthy at 63kg. From Sliabh Luachra Boxing Club Barry O’Connor who won an All Ireland title last year will fight at 48kg while John O’Brien contests at 50kgs. The Cashen Vale Boxing Club has three fighters through to the Munster Championships including 2015 All Ireland winner Ryan Downey who fights at 42kg. He will be joined by Aaron McElligott at 63kg and Kevin Cronin who fights at 91kg. The Trojan Boxing Club members Sean Walsh 60kg and Jamie McFey 66kg will also be looking for Munster glory next weekend. SEAN GOES CLOSE ON THE BIKE IN MAYO: The Kerry footballers were not the only ones in action in Mayo last weekend as some of the counties top young cyclists competed in the two days of Ras Mayo. Sean Barrett of Tralee Manor West iBike had a great weekend and enjoyed a wonderful battle with Dingle’s Tom Moriarty (O’Leary Stone Kanturk) all weekend in the u14 section. Credit to Moriarty who took the wins but Barrett took 3rd on the road race on the first day and finished in the same position in Sunday’s Time Trial. The riders were back out in the afternoon and again it was Moriarty from Barrett as the Kerry duo dominated the weekend. When the points were added up for the weekend Moriaty took Yellow with Barrett in second. In the u16’s David Fitzgerald and Jake Deering, both of Tralee Manor West iBike and Kingdom CC’s Cillian O’Sullivan all rode well despite missing out on the podium. TRALEE GO DOWN IN THE BASKETBALL BATTLE OF THE IT’S: IT Carlow are the 2016 Women’s Division Two League Champions in college basketball after a 75-43 win over IT Tralee at the National

Basketball Arena. IT Tralee had Denise Dunlea to call on from Team Denjoes American Style, but the day belonged to the Carlow side with a solid performance throughout all four quarters. They did the real damage in the first quarter, racking up 27 points from McCarthy, Shannon Holbrook and Lilian McCabe. The Kerry women put on their strongest showing in the second quarter with fine baskets from Laura Griffin and Megan Buckley. It’s a second runner’s up medal in the space of two years for Vinnie Murphy’s squad who were beaten by a strong DIT side in 2015. IT Tralee: Megan Buckley 8, Aoife Daly 7, Annie Cooper 2, Denise Dunlea 8, Laura Griffin 12. Substitutes: Sinead O’Hanlon, Elena Lozano Punet 2, Samantha Ahern 2, Orlaith Gillespie 2, Aoife Nolan, Amanda O’Donnell. Coach: Vinnie Murphy EMMA IS THE LATEST TO WEAR THE GREEN: For any sports person to be selected for an Irish team is a wonderful achievement and at the moment players like Rian O’Sullivan and Jesse Stafford Lacey are wearing the green in the soccer world. Now Emma Sherwood, who played for a number of years with Tralee Imperials, will pull on the green jersey, this time in basketball. For the first time in 6 years Ireland are sending a Senior Women’s team to an international tournament. They will compete in the FIBA European Championships for Small Countries and coach Mark Scannell, well known in Tralee basketball circles, has included Emma in his squad to face Moldova and Wales in Gibraltar from June 26th. Emma is now playing with Pyrobel Killester in Dublin. ST BRENDAN’S BASKETBALL NEWS: The Saint Brendan’s Basketball club Easter Camp will take place in Moyderwell from Monday March 21st to 23rd and is open to children from 4 to 11 years of age. The Camp runs on Monday and Tuesday from 10am to 1pm and on Wednesday from 9.30am to 12.30 and costs e30. For further information contact Charles O’Sullivan on (086) 256 6961. This was Kerry’s last home game and they are away to Westmeath in their next game on Saturday March 26th.
