SET IN STONE A word from the publisher

Life is truly a gift, and at times it can be really hard. The daily grind can be taxing. Family, work, relationships, or whatever it might be. Like some kind of sickness—it can eat you alive, but it’s important to step back, breathe, and think about the good things, too. For some strange reason, our minds seem to gravitate to the bad before the good, and I have no idea why. What I do know is that no matter how bad it is—there’s always light at the end of the tunnel. So, when you’re feeling down and no matter how tough it is—call a friend, or family member to remind you of all the good things life has to offer. We need to stick together with love and support. A little positive reinforcement goes a long way, and not just for our inner circles. This summer is going to be crazy busy, so please remember to stay positive and share the love. Say hello when crossing paths, let that car into your lane when traffic’s congested, and try to be bit more selfless. A little love can go a long way. Who knows what the person next to you is going through. One little show of good faith could make their whole day so much better. Life is as simple or as complicated as you make it—the choice is up to you. Happy summertime,

Jamey Stone

Oceanside's Finest LITA ESPOSITO WORDS: ALONDRA FIGUEROA PHOTO: ZACH CORDNER

Think of an amazing teacher that has touched your life, inspired your soul, challenged your mind, and genuinely took the time to light that spark of learning for you. For many students in Oceanside that have attended Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in the last 28 years, that name is Mrs. Juliette Esposito. Known to her fellow teachers and friends as “Lita,” she’s the last faculty member of the proud list of teachers that opened King Middle School back in 1994. In 1988 when finishing her teaching credential at SDSU, Lita applied for her first teaching position at Oceanside Unified School District and was offered a 50-percent PE position, but she politely declined, as she wanted full time employment. Within the hour, OUSD made a great decision and called her back offering her a full time position as an adaptive PE teacher working with special needs students at several different sites. Six years in, Lita heard about a brand new school opening in Oceanside, so she met with King’s opening principal, Raye Clendening, who told her the PE positions were filled, but as she minored in Biology, she could also teach life science! Lita was surprised and a little scared, but leapt at the chance to join this new school on a new path. She also shared that she’ll forever be grateful to Clendening for seeing her potential, and pushing her to jump into the science world. Lita has always remained at MLK, and not only teaches seventh grade life science, but has run the Green Team—King’s environmental awareness, and recycling club for many years. That’s not all, folks. She also coaches the crosscountry team in the fall, and track & field in the spring! She’s a powerhouse, and a strong voice for students on campus. As someone who has worked with her for years, I can honestly say that she’s been more than just a colleague. Lita has been a mentor,

students were not being met. LGBTQ students often have very few open peers and adults to u s e a s r e s o u rc e s a n d m e n t o r s . L i t a h a s wholeheartedly joined that effort, and is a constant support for those students at King. It’s important to note that when adopting this new curriculum, OUSD and Lita personally were faced with many obstacles. She remembered being shocked when she saw the protests at school board meetings. Community members were flashing anti-gay signs and screaming hate speech, and still Lita had the courage to get up in front of packed houses with rough, hostile crowds to speak to the science behind the curriculum, and why it was so badly needed. Lita also contacted the ACLU and North County LGBTQ Resource Center for support, and there “Lita has been a mentor, were times she had to be escorted to her car confidante, and constant as people who disagreed with this t ype of source of inspiration” additional curriculum verbally attacked her. Lita admits it was overwhelming, but she took you can see a different kind of personal growth.” it like a champ. She says she’s loved every minute of it, and that she’s lucky to have loved her career so much. Lita has come full circle, and now has taught many of her former students’ children. When asked about some final words of wisdom she wanted to share with other teachers she had this to say: “Try to make a connection with students outside of the classroom. I’ve made my deepest connections with students through track & field and cross-country. It allows you to see the student in a completely different light. You may even see a student that’s quite challenging in the classroom, but as a coach,

FREE Used Oil and Oil Filter Exchange Events for Oceanside Residents!

Receive a FREE New Oil Filter When You Bring in Your Used Oil Filter

A regular oil change keeps automobiles running smoothly. Recycling that oil keeps our environment healthy too! The City of Oceanside and O’Reilly Auto Parts are co-sponsoring used oil and oil filter exchange events throughout May! Oceanside residents will receive a free new oil filter when they bring in a used oil filter to a participating store. It couldn’t be simpler! Why It’s Important to Properly Recycle Oil Did you know? Used motor oil never wears out—it just gets dirty and can be cleaned, recycled, and used again. Recycling used motor oil conserves a natural resource and is also good for the environment. In fact, Oceanside residents prevented over 30,000 gallons of used oil from polluting our local waterways by recycling used oil in 2021 alone! Motor oil poured onto the ground, into storm drains or tossed into trash cans—even in a sealed container—can contaminate and pollute the soil, groundwater, streams and rivers. It’s also illegal.

How YOU Can Participate If you’re an Oceanside resident, simply bring in your used motor oil filter to be recycled at one of the participating O’Reilly Auto Parts locations below and receive a FREE* new oil filter in exchange. It’s that easy! O’Reilly Auto Parts from 7:30 AM to 9:00 PM May 14, 2022 502 Oceanside Blvd. May 21, 2022 3661 Mission Ave. May 28, 2022 3840 Plaza Dr.

Storing used oil in containers for long periods of time is also dangerous because many materials can degrade when in contact with used oil, increasing the risk of a spill. Recycling your used motor oil reduces these pollution and safety threats. When you take your used oil to a certified center for recycling, like O’Reilly Auto Parts, you are protecting the environment, conserving a valuable resource, and in this case, getting a free new oil filter. That’s a winning combination!

* While supplies last. Max free filter value $12 + tax. Max 2 free filters per household. This FREE oil filter offer is only valid during the specific date, time and location in this article. Please ONLY drop off used oil and oil filters during business hours. For more Green Oceanside events and information including where to properly recycle your used oil and oil filters, please visit www.greenoceanside.org 21

OCEANSIDE ATHLETIC CLUB WORDS: KATIE LALICATA PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

Intentions often dictate outcomes. At Oceanside Athletic Club, they’ve mindfully crafted space, hired professionals, and built community that’s intended to uplift, educate, empower, and serve locals with a healthy watering hole for all kinds of needs. Oceanside Athletic Club isn’t just another gym offering Boxing and Muay Thai classes. Like their name implies, it’s a club—a club where everyone’s welcome. “What I love about the Oceanside Community is that everyone wants to give and contribute and come together. And in return, we like to run things like self defense seminars and community events, that are generally free events just to get people in and get them exposed to something different that maybe they aren’t comfortable with, but still want to do,” said owner Tabitha Newton. This is one of the many gestures of kindness extended by Oceanside Athletic Club, and just one of the ways they keep growing, evolving, and embracing this dynamic community and its diverse needs. On the surface, OAC embodies a classic boxing gym: A full sized ring, spacious industrial ceilings, equipment hung, and bags securely fastened. It’s bright and clean, and is the kind of place that could feel intimidating, but doesn’t. It’s apparent that the owners and coaches want to make members and newbies alike feel welcome. Tabitha and her husband Chris Newton took over the space, formerly called Brick by Brick, in 2020. They’ve spent the last two years, through Covid and all, building Oceanside Athletic Club into the beautiful community womb that it is today. They’ve hired the most professional and knowledgeable coaches and believe in big dreams. Both a woman and veteran owned establishment, this is the kind of business that keeps the soul of

Oceanside thriving and real. They boast youth programs, are invested in establishing Rocksteady boxing for Parkinson’s program, and have classes that teach the most basic beginners and challenge the most skilled and experienced fighters. From sparring to fundamentals, private lessons, and a newly formed personal training space; a space that offers boot camps, gymnastics, and even yoga; there is no stopping the dedication the Newtons have to uplifting and enhancing this community. Placing emphasis on the importance of the human aspect of life, the vibe and classes here are a perfect balance of fun and sweat. “One thing I feel really proud about,” said Tabitha. “We have a very welcoming group of people that offers fundamental based classes for everyone.” The OAC coaches and owners put emphasis and direct attention towards the development and blossoming of youth programs. With youth classes serving ages six to teens, this is a facet of the business that OAC is most proud of. They’re also leaning towards adding classes for kids under six, too! Family discounts are on the menu, and while self- defense, healthy lifest yles, and encouraging positive self-esteem is the goal; creating a bountiful community hub that uplifts and empowers one another is the foundation on which this business is built. Oceanside Athletic Club has a team of coaches—all of who currently fight, or have fought in the past. Their schedule that has both male and female teachers and class offerings from 7am-8pm, as well as open gym hours all day long for those who prefer solo work outs. Come by OAC, bring a friend, bring your kids, put on some gloves, and enjoy what a good sweat and a great community have to offer. 22

CARLOS VERDUGO

WORDS: JAMEY STONE PHOTO: ZACH CORDNER

When I first met Carlos, he was a young buck working the meat counter at the now defunct Red & White market in South O. He was always super respectful, and a hard worker. What I didn’t know at the time was that he had the very special talent of playing the drums on another level. In fact, when I asked him when he knew that being a professional drummer was his path, he calmly explained that he knew by the young age of sixteen. Growing up in Oceanside, there was no shortage of inspiration. Punk bands like Wanted Dead were playing locally, and taking the next step by getting booked on the famed Warp Tour. One of his first big audiences was getting on stage with them on tour and playing a few songs. It

wasn’t long afterwards that he saw an ad for a drummer for the band Tribal Seeds. He tried out and made the cut. This was his big break. Next thing you know, Carlos was on the road playing around the nation, while honing his craft like a butcher sharpens his knives. Fast-forward to current times and you can hear his drum skills with one of the most famous bands in the world—Sublime with Rome. It’s a dream come true for him, and the last six years with the band have been amazing. Not bad for a young kid with big dreams raised in Oceanside. Carlos loves what he does, and where he’s from. When asked what he loves about our city, his answer was simple: “Oceanside is a melting 26

pot of different races and cultures and that lets everyone here live and be who they truly are with no BS or filters.” So much so, that he and his lovely wife Mary bought his childhood home a few years back. The roots run deep and his home base is the perfect place to for his wife to work on her YouTube channel (Mary Verdugo) dedicated to all things reptilian. When not on tour, you can find Carlos out fishing or hanging with a cold pint at Brooklyn Boyz Pizza. Keep up the good work, Carlos. Oceanside is proud to call you part of our amazing community. THE OSIDER MAY / JUNE 2022

Music at the Museum is the first Friday of every month through September.

Kick off Summer with the OCEANSIDE MUSEUM OF ART WORDS: SHELBY ROWE

A Kind of Heaven: Kirsten Zirngibl

The Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA) has invited artists, students, and the plain ol’ curious through its doors to connect with creativity since 1997. This year marks OMA’s 25th anniversary as a cultural and historical pillar in Oceanside, and they’re welcoming the community to come down and celebrate with a list of stacked summer events. Catch a quick summary below of two events starting this month: Music at the Museum, and “A Kind of Heaven,” and be sure to check out their website for the rest of their summer schedule. Music at the Museum: A Tribute to Oceanside The first Music at the Museum of the year starts on May 6, and is in celebration of Oceanside Unfiltered—a street art exhibition showcasing local photographers curated by The Osider’s very own co-founder Zach Cordner. The exhibition shows a raw and uncut perspective of Oceanside. In honor of the exhibition, the local artists behind the lens and OMA’s 25th anniversary, the first Music at the Museum is kicking off the summer series with a block party celebration. The evening includes performances by local musician Dezzy Hollow and break dance artists

30

Wild7s Freestyle Krew. You can expect old school and funk sounds by DJ-Grande, and catch the Member's Only Car Club holding it down with their lowriders on Pier View Way. The event is free—both for the Oceanside Unfiltered exhibition and Music at the Museum event. For the rest of summer until September, you can catch Music at the Museum on the first Friday of every month in collaboration with First Friday Oceanside Art Walk. The music series is themed “A Tribute to Oceanside,” so each month will have a different musical performance by local talent from RexRode Productions. The lineup for the next few months includes Daring Greatly, Taryn Donath Trio, Leonard Patton Trio, and Johnny Tarr Group. Music at the Museum has been connecting artists and the community for the past five years, and is a perfect introduction to the Oceanside Museum of Art if you’ve never visited before. “When I moved to Oceanside, there were people just a few blocks away who didn’t know there was a museum here,” Mara Mingalone, Executive Director of OMA, said. “So, the series was really born from that motivation to make the museum accessible, welcoming, and open to anyone who wants to come in with no barriers in terms of admission fees.”

A Kind of Heaven: Mandy Cao

A Kind of Heaven Exhibition Starting on May 21, you can see A Kind of Heaven at the Oceanside Museum of Art that showcases whimsical pieces by a handful of Southern California visionary artists. “This artwork is really looking at fantastical ideas and interpretations of other worlds. You might call this fantasy artwork or magical artwork or magical realism, but really they’re just beautiful and sometimes eerie and strange ideas about other types of reality,” Katie Dolgov Director of Exhibitions and Collections said. Each artist welcomes their own imagination to illustrate their own version of reality in a world where rules don’t exist. Artist Martin Jarmick welcomes you into an alternate world through video representation, and Tim Hengst invites you to make sense of an image of a mossy tree printed on aluminum. It’s an exhibition showing the familiar in an unordinary way, masking the mundane with the peculiar by altering the way we see and conceptualize reality. It can easily be described as a visual feast. “There are absolutely sumptuous colors, and something that’s probably a little unusual about this exhibition is that there isn’t any abstract work, “ Dolgov said. “It’s all identifiable, but what can be identifiable in these works ranges so vastly from almost sci-fi type building scapes to monstrous beasts, and then just a lot of beautiful forms and colors.” OMA will be showing the A Kind of Heaven exhibition until August 21. Admission is $10, $5 for seniors and military, and free for students. The Museum is open Thursday-Sunday.

Things You Didn’t Know About Oceanside

in the 1940s

The 1940s ushered in new growth and development—a welcome relief from the Depression years of the 1930s. December of 1940 closed the year with one of the best months for local construction. City inspector George W. Schmidt announced that permits totaled $27,545 compared to just $9,640 in December of 1939, and that a large majority of the permits taken out in 1940 were for “new homes and residential units, cottage courts, and the like.”

Looking North on Highway 101 in the 1940s. 37

1.

With the economy looking up, car dealerships increased sales. Two notable car dealerships were established in Oceanside in consecutive years. Charles B. Weseloh, Sr., who had started a Chevrolet dealership in Ramona in 1925, opened a new dealership on South Hill Street in Oceanside in 1940. The dealership did so well, that in 1946, a new showroom was built at Hill and Topeka Streets, which was described as “one of the most modern Chevrolet agencies in all of Southern California” and “a distinct asset to the Oceanside business district.” The following year, Homer Heller opened his Ford dealership, and in 1947, Vince Dixon partnered with Heller to form Dixon-Heller Motors. The dealership was located at 229 South Hill Street.

2.

In 1940, Oceanside’s population was 4,651—a 30 percent increase from the previous decade. Our modest seaside town would soon change with world events, and the advent of a combat training base at Rancho Santa Margarita Rancho. As World War II intensified, the historic rancho was taken over by the United States Navy to be used as a training base for the Marine Corps.Over 20,000 marines and civilian support flooded the base, and dramatically changed Oceanside forever. Oceanside was hard pressed to meet the need for housing and other essentials the military and civilian personnel demanded. Oceanside’s population more than doubled in five years. Restaurants, schools, and hotels were bursting at the seams.

Catering to the military, Thelma Lawrence Garrigan opened a restaurant and nightclub called “Garrigan’s” in 1942 in what was formerly the Borden Department Store at the southeast corner of Tremont and Third Streets (Pier View Way). Local contractor Charles O. Rowe was hired to remodel the main floor into a ballroom for dancing. On one end of the room a large mahogany curved bar was built. The mezzanine floor accommodated diners that featured a “high class steak house.” Garrigan revamped the building, and made it a successful hot spot, but all too soon Thelma's nightclub was taken over for use as the USO.

Joseph “Buddy” Todd was one of the first local residents to die in World War II. In August of 1942, his battleship the U.S.S Astoria was sunk in the Solomon Islands Battle. His mother Mary Todd, who worked for the Oceanside Police Department for years, received a purple heart that was awarded to her son. Buddy Todd Park on Mesa Street was dedicated in memory of Todd. Eastside resident John Balderrama was killed in action in Belgium on October 13, 1944. Balderrama Park was named in his honor.

As the population continued to climb with the influx of people, the city and Chamber of Commerce urged homeowners to rent rooms to military personnel or their families. It was common for people to knock on doors and ask for a room to rent or a place to sleep. Out of town property owners were contacted by the chamber and asked to rent their summer homes to help with the housing crisis. Many families opened their doors to servicemen, and their families began a long-lasting relationship between Oceanside and Camp Pendleton.

Detached garages in the rear of many downtown homes were converted to small houses or apartments to accommodate the growing population. Trailer parks that were once used by tourists and summer visitors now were used as permanent homes due to the housing shortage. The owner of the lot behind the 101 Cafe on Hill Street (Coast Highway) brought in small trailers, and rented them out to servicemen and their wives. John and Pauline Spangler, owners of the 101 Cafe, had to live in the back room of the restaurant because of this shortage.

In 1946, Oceanside’s new public library was completed, at a cost of just over $34,000. Located on North Nevada Street, this was the library’s first home apart from other city offices, such as the city clerk, since its inception in 1904. Oceanside’s quaint little Santa Fe train depot built in 1888 was no longer adequate, and on December 7, 1946, it celebrated its new “modern concrete depot,” designed by Santa Fe architect H. L. Gilman. The $100,000 train station was described as having a “stucco exterior, concrete floors, and foundation, a wood frame with asbestos shingles, marble floors, and wainscot in the main waiting

In 1946, two airports were approved by the city council. The Hi-Hi Sky Ranch airport was located just south of present day Oceanside Boulevard—east of Crouch Street. Owner/operator Kenneth Nill was a senior test pilot for Boeing Aircraft, and a civilian director of flight training for the Army in Denton, Texas. His wife Coyle Wellman was a flight instructor at the Hi-Hi Sky airport that took its name from a boy’s home located nearby. The second airfield was on city-owned land adjacent to the San Luis Rey River below the Rosicrucian Fellowship. The land was leased to William Lake and James Carr for a ten-year period 39

with an option to renew. This airfield was later designated Oceanside’s municipal airport in April of 1946.

Bumper to bumper traffic through downtown Oceanside was common—especially on the weekends. In 1947, plans to re-route Highway 101 began with much controversy, but this new highway would take several more years for the first phase to even open.

Pure Water Oceanside

WORDS: ELIZABETH SCHWARTZE

Water is life. Even with an abundance of water on planet Earth, it’s estimated that only .3% - .5% is potable water. As a coastal desert climate, San Diego has been reliant upon water sources from far away—channeling water from the Sacramento Bay Delta and Colorado River. A small portion of the city’s water supply is local and comes from a naturally occurring underground aquifer called the Mission Basin. However, the aquifer’s water

supply has declined over years of use. With Oceanside’s growing population, the need for clean, sustainable water will only increase in the upcoming decades. With approximately 85-percent of Oceanside’s water imported, it’s subject to rising costs, requires excessive amounts of energy to transport, and is vulnerable to natural disasters. It became apparent that the sooner Oceanside could provide its own reliable water source, and remove obstacles to access the

water—the better! In anticipation of future needs, and the capacity to affect change within our city boundaries, the City of Oceanside took action. In 2015, a feasibility study was performed and identified indirect potable reuse as economically and structurally feasible for Oceanside. Seven years later, the $70 million project resulted in a fully-functioning, award-winning facility that is cleaning Oceanside’s 42

water—allowing Oceanside to eventually produce 30-percent of its own water. In March 2022, the city of Oceanside held the Grand Opening of Pure Water Oceanside. The project remained on schedule, even receiving an award in 2016 for “Agency of the Year” by the Water Reliability Coalition. “Pure Water Oceanside is a major accomplishment for the City of Oceanside and our community,” said Cari Dale, Water U tilities D irector, Cit y of Oceanside. “Our staff work hard to ensure the City continues to increase our local water supply reliability by reusing our water resources to the fullest potential. D eveloping the first fully operational advanced water purification facility PURE WATER OCEANSIDE WILL: •

Reduce reliance on imported water

Improve groundwater resources

Increase local, sustainable water supplies

Be financially competitive with imported and desalinated water rates

Enhance resiliency during droughts and climate change

Be environmentally sound

PURE WATER OCEANSIDE UTILIZES A SIX-STEP PROCESS:

in San Diego County requires community support and we are fortunate to have Oceanside’s.” The state-of-the-art process of recycling water is safe, drought-proof, and environmentally sound. “This is not something new to the industry or the world—this is just new to San Diego. Orange County and Disneyland have used the technology for ten years. We’re the first in San Diego to be online. The water is safe, reliable, and environmentally friendly to produce and consume,” stated Lindsay Leahy, Principal Water Engineer.

Kaleo’s Oside Around town with our resident rock star WORDS: ALICIA STONE PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

Kaleo's home studio.

On the twelfth of May in 1999, Kaleo Wassman and the two other members of his band Pepper left their hometown of Kona, and set out across the Pacific to pursue a career in music. They landed in Carlsbad, and cut their teeth playing gigs around San Diego, occasionally coming to Oceanside to visit our waves. A few years later while playing on the road for the first time, a chance meeting with the Oceanside band Wanted Dead would prove to be a major influence in Kaleo’s life. “We actually met them in Arizona. First day of The Warped Tour 2001, we found them sleeping underneath their station wagon. We were like these guys are hard! They were the greatest, most fun band there,” reminisced Kaleo. “We were complete opposites,

as far as musical style, but we were each other’s greatest fans on that whole tour. They told us stories about how Oceanside was such a special, beautiful melting pot of cultures and colors, and that made so much sense to me, because we had the same variety of people growing up on the Big Island, and we understood how similar our experiences had been.” Now having lived downtown just a few blocks from the beach for twelve years, Kaleo has had a bird’s eye view of the current shift happening and his upbringing has given him a distinctive perspective. “When I was growing up in Kona, the population was nothing compared to what it is right now. There were a small number of people actually living there. And now I’m able to see that

exciting situation happen again. I’ve lived through it once in Kona, and I’m living through it again now in Oceanside.” One of Kaleo’s favorite activities is walking around town, and he uses the time to slow down and pay attention to the nuances that he’d usually miss while driving. He starts most days taking in the scenery in his baseball cap with his backpack on, and his earbuds in. His backpack has two specifically designated pockets, and he never makes it home without both of them filled with the trash he finds on the beach. Having grown up on an island and witnessing the impact tourism had on the environment, beach etiquette is a subject he’s very passionate about and he strongly believes it’s something we can easily teach newcomers. “ I re ally think this give s us a n opportunity to communicate some simple guidelines that people who don’t live on a coastline may not be aware of. It’s the simple idea of leaving a place better than you found it. We have such a pristine ecosystem, and this is the perfect time to remind each other how special this place is and together make it a conscious practice to ensure it stays this way.” Appreciating and showing respect to the locals in a booming community is also something Kaleo

Kaleo’s Oside 46

“ Kaleo’s love of wandering around town has seeped into the way he writes music and since Covid-19 has kept him mostly grounded over the last two years, he has immersed himself in Oceanside”

is very familiar with, and it’s a lesson he’d like to pass along to new residents and visitors. “The similarities between Kona and Oceanside have made it very, very easy for me to relate to and maneuver in this town. Understanding how to treat the locals who have put in their time, raised their families, and started their businesses here is so important. As a collective whole, we should know how lucky we are that we get to be here. We get to help each other thrive, and we all get to enjoy this adventurous uplift.”

Another big draw when Kaleo first heard his new friends singing the praises of our city’s culture was the lure of the local food. When he first started coming here all those years ago, he had a few regular spots, but now he’s elated with the amount of options we have. “I love contrast. I can’t see without it. And I love the flavors that mixed cultures bring, not just with their personalities and traditions, but also with their flavors of food. And I love food! We’ve had a food explosion! Oceanside is now truly a food destination. I’ve been so passionate 48

about checking out every single new restaurant that pops up, and I’ve been lucky enough to make some really great friends along the way.” Those relationships have come in handy after the recent launch of Rebel & Muse wine—the latest endeavor from he and his wife, Melanie’s business brand. Started in 2015, Rebel & Muse began hosting yoga retreats, added a podcast, and in 2020 premiered their own wine label. Currently available are the traditionally made Sparkling Rosé and the Blanc de Blancs with more in the collection on the horizon. Kaleo describes their events as “retreat oriented experiences in nature and workshops in Yogic philosophy.” And added, “With Rebel & Muse it’s not about removing yourself and living in a cave or on some mountain. It’s about learning how to use simple techniques as a practice to find more balance in your day to day life, and to use those applications in the moment.” After the pandemic shut down the band’s touring schedule, he began performing “Kaleo Wassman” unplugged, story-telling acoustic experiences at smaller venues that have allowed them to showcase their wine. ”You always hear about wine being paired with cheese or charcuterie, but we’re pairing wine with music.” Kaleo’s love of wandering around town has seeped into the way he writes music and since Covid-19 has kept him mostly grounded over the last two years, he has immersed himself in Oceanside. “I’ll just walk and walk and walk while listening to mixes that have to be approved for a project, and I’ll look at the different colors and textures of the people intermingling on the beach, and if the soundtrack is matching what I’m seeing, then I know that I’m on the right path.” Twenty-three years later and after traveling the world, Kaleo and Melanie have happily chosen

eo’s Oside Crackin' open a bottle of the Rebel & Muse Blanc De Blanc with Luis Jr. at The Lighthouse.

Oceanside as their base to live, love, and work. As Pepper celebrates the 20th Anniversary of their first album Kona Town, Kaleo is once again thinking of the music that led him here and appreciating his place in our community. “There are so many amazing musicians here in Oceanside.

Skillet, Shane Hall, Carlos Verdugo, and Nato Bardeen—that’s just a few” explained Kaleo. “And all of the kids that are still in the garage, I’m so excited to see where they’re going to take us next! I moved from Kona to find another Kona and that is Oceanside. I just simply know I will 49

never live anywhere else on the mainland. Coming from a small town on a big island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean to being embraced and welcomed here has made all the difference, and I feel truly grateful to say that this is my home away from home.”

Oceanside Harbor Fun Guide It's 2022 and there’s so much to do! It’s looking a lot like summer, and that means plenty of beach time for Oceanside locals and visitors. Oceanside Harbor and its beach are quintessential Oceanside and a beacon of all things great about living in and visiting our picturesque cityby-the-sea. The harbor was dedicated and officially opened in 1963, and shortly thereafter its “Cape Cod” Harbor Village opened for business in 1964. For almost 60 years, Oceanside Harbor has provided innumerable ocean-loving fans with memories. The nearly two-miles of sidewalk that hugs the harbor perimeter is perfect for a run, stroll, or bike ride with benches and picnic tables to provide a day of fun. Way back in August of 2021, while we were all collectively enjoying the first taste of a “semi-postCOVID” world, a unique little gift shop opened its doors in one of our historic storefronts. FINE is an art, culture, and lifestyle store focused on highlighting local and independent artists, designers, and creators. FINE is currently enjoying the steady flow of foot traffic in the heart of our bustling downtown, and gearing up for what’ll be our first much-anticipated mask-free summer, and all the busy chaos of the tourist season. FINE is owned and operated by Charley Taylor, an Oceanside resident who’s worked hard to find herself fortunate enough to ride her bike to work every day. Originally from the Central Valley, Charley received her degree in art and was living her dream working in San Francisco, but after five years she was itching to get back to the place she’s called home since junior high. Taylor described Fine as a modern art gallery and boutique. “This space was created specifically for Oceanside with handmade goods sourced and priced to reflect the community. This isn’t your typical, stuffy gallery that makes you feel like you can’t touch anything. I want every one

that comes in to feel welcomed with a sense of belonging in a relaxed atmosphere.” After making over 23,000 sales on Etsy, Charley’s online business grew too large to operate out of her home, and she needed a space to house inventory and fulfill orders. When she found this location, her business quickly blossomed into a retail store with several employees and items from over 50 diverse makers. H er perso nal brands are CharleyTaylorArt (paintings, prints, and more), and STONED (astrological themed crystals). The store is beautifully curated with everything from candles, home decor, apparel, and apothecary to her signature crystal starter kits. The walls are covered in available artwork with options for customizing frame size, material, and color. She carries a really fun array of greeting cards that are guaranteed to make you giggle, as well as notepads and other nostalgic paper products. Everything in the store is available for purchase online, and her Instagram stories showcase her latest inventory additions. Charley loved building a space for her business 68

Owner, Charley Taylor

within such a strong community: “The growth of the city is intense, but we have a firm grip on our culture and we take an active role in supporting each other’s local businesses. It’s paradise here and there isn’t anywhere else I’d want to live!”

Berry Crunch French Toast

Coffee Cake and Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice

STRATFORD at the HARBOR WORDS: SHELBY ROWE PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

Who doesn’t love breakfast with a view? Stratford at the Harbor, nestled in the storefronts at the Harbor Village, offers eggs and bacon with a side of scenery. If the idea of an outdoor breaky with a mimosa or two gets you going, then this is the spot for you. If you haven’t visited Stratford at the Harbor in the past few months, then it may look a little different when you walk in. The only waterfront breakfast spot at the harbor open seven days a week went through a slight makeover. “We got the remodel done around the end of February, so there’s more natural light, and more of an inside-outside concept. We hope to add an espresso machine in the future,” said general manager Ali Leese. The once quant classic American breakfast spot has taken on a completely different look. They replaced the outdoor wall with sliding bi-fold doors, transforming the restaurant into an open-air eatery. The now boho-beachy decor struts minimalist gold accents, decorative pastel hues, and a trendy floral accent wall. The biggest difference: Service is now done at the counter—not at the table. Everything else about Stratford at the Harbor is as classic as ever. Their menu boasts everyone’s favorites from eggs Benedict to a fluffy stack of buttermilk pancakes. But, the inside scoop says there are a couple options on the menu that just can’t be beat.

“Both the meat on the chilaquiles and corned beef hash are made in house, and I just think it’s ten times better that way,” Leese said. You read it right: the meat on the chilaquiles and corned beef hash are all prepared and seasoned in house from scratch. Another favorite for those who like a sweet treat is the Berry Crunch French Toast, smothered in sweet berries and dollops of whipped cream. Luckily for you late birds, breakfast isn’t the only meal served up here. The Cabo Club is stacked just as any sandwich should be with thick cuts of turkey, and a heaping side of perfectly golden fries. Word on the street is anything with fish is a big lunchtime seller. Try their mahi fish sandwich, mahi fish tacos, or fish and chips. No matter what

you choose, you can’t go wrong. For those who like a boozy brunch, there’s plenty of mimosas, Bloody Mary’s, and margaritas to go around, plus a selection of beer on tap. And, for those who don’t—there’s fresh squeezed juice, and freshly brewed coffee always on deck. Visit Stratford at the Harbor in Harbor Village for breakfast and lunch every day until 2pm on the weekdays, 4pm on Saturdays, and 3pm on Sundays. SOUTH O BREWING COMPANY

WORDS: SHELBY ROWE PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

(L to R): Head Brewer Maurey Fletcher, Co-Owner Trevor Whitehead, and Co-Owner Joel Steinmetz.

Good company and better beer is what you can find at South O Brewing Company. Born from a lockdown hobby between neighbors Joel Steinmetz and Trevor Whitehead, the brewery just south of the dip is an extension of what these two did to bring their neighborhood together. “During the lockdown, no one was going to bars or restaurants, but they were coming to my place.” Whitehead said. “I had four tap handles in my garage with a TV, and a bar. We had to brew three times a week just to keep up.“ T h e su c c e s s of t h eir ga rag e - t u r n e d neighborhood-bar inspired them to bring on head brewer Maurey Fletcher and open their own community-focused brewery in the former Oceanside College of Beauty building on Coast Highway. When you visit, you’ll notice some familiar names on the tap list. There’s the Fire Mountain Lager, Hill Street Honey, Tremont Porter, and Graves House West Coast IPA—the family name for the more commonly known Top Gun house. “We live in this neighborhood, and we want to honor the history of this community,” Steinmetz said. “So, that’s why we’re interested in naming our beers after local landmarks and streets so we can pay homage to the history of this area.” Paying respect to Oceanside’s community doesn’t stop at naming beers after local streets and landmarks. They’ve also hosted two fundraising nights

since their grand opening only five months ago. They invited Oceanside College of Beauty alumni back to their old stomping grounds to launch the Beauty College Blonde in their honor, and donate proceeds to their chosen charity. T hey did the same for the Oceanside Firefighters Association, releasing their Station 2 Red Ale to raise money for the Oceanside Firefighters Charity Fund. “We want to support the community, so we made a red ale and named it Station 2, then hosted a fundraising night,” Steinmetz said. “Those are the kind of events we’re interested in doing—where we actually support the community.” The trio at South O Brewing Company is always trying to keep things interesting, whether that’s with community events or experimental flavors. Fletcher recently brewed a Maple Spice Latte Nitro Stout with maple syrup and espresso from Vigilante Coffee. They’re also set to release their first-ever Mexican Lager made with New Zealand hops on Cinco De Mayo. “It’s not a traditional hop to use in a Mexican Lager, but it’s going to give it a lime flavor without actually using lime,” Fletcher said. Check out more information about weekly food vendors and events by visiting their Instagram @southobrewingco. For inquiries about fundraising events, please reach out directly. 76

ORFILA VINEYARDS TASTING ROOM & KITCHEN

Vegan Coconut Cake

WORDS: KATIE LALICATA PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

As towns grow and change, often the businesses that serve these places do, too. Starting back in December 2018 as a traditional tasting room, with small menu offerings, Orfila winery has “grown up.” Mostly as a result of Covid (and an amazing chef with so talent much to offer), Orfila has transformed into a full service restaurant boasting an amazing menu, and great wines. Executive Chef Luke Morganstern and Manager David Robinson are quite the Dynamic Duo. Chef Luke began as the brains and heart of the kitchen since day one, and Robinson came along as the face of the house not long after. They’ve since poured their time and energy, and wine of course, into establishing Orfila as a premier Oceanside destination for both wine drinkers and food connoisseurs. Orfila Vineyards & Winery (the mothership of Orfila Oceanside) is located just outside of town in the picturesque San Pascual Valley. For patrons looking for a full tasting experience, a day trip to the vineyards themselves is a perfect option. What Chef Luke and David really want to translate here is that Orfila Oceanside is as much a restaurant as any of their neighboring eateries. “I like to call us a restaurant owned by a winery,”

Shrimp Penne

said Robinson. The transformation from tasting room to restaurant has given the whole staff an opportunity to showcase their personality through food and service. As a result of this spirited combustable synergy, Orfila Oceanside keeps getting busier and busier. Something that sets Orfila Oceanside apart from other restaurants, however, is their capability to offer food and wine pairings for any of the menu items. Chef Luke builds seasonal menus that can be matched to any of the varietals of red or whites they pour. He has a lifetime of restaurant experience that began as a kid in his parent’s restaurant in New York. Once he “landed” in Oceanside, Chef Morganstern finally honed his culinary expertise by attending the San Diego Culinary Institute. Having experience in some of the finer dining locations in greater San Diego, Chef has found his home here, creating beautiful and tasty plates at Orfila Oceanside. For the front of the house, David and his friendly, welcoming staff are all knowledgeable in the wine varietals and can help pick the perfect pour for any palette. Located centrally in the heart of downtown Oceanside, Orfila is a great place to stop in for a glass or enjoy a whole meal. With a playful smirk 78

(L to R): Manager David Robinson and Executive Chef Luke Morganstern

Chef Luke set the scene: “Here people will come to see the musicians, people are having fun, drinking the wine, eating delicious food, and listening to good music. Right here in beautiful Oceanside, a block from the beach. It’s amazing.” Sounds dreamy, right? Come get in on the dream. With inside and outside seating, full table service six days a week (closed Mondays), live music Thursday through Saturday, and wine club opportunities for wine lovers, Dave, Luke & Co are here to ensure all your dining, drinking, and entertainment needs are satisfied.
