Have you ever felt the longing to truly know a destination; to go beyond sightseeing and achieve an authentic understanding of a place?

Hawaiian culture is rooted in the vital connection between people and place. By practicing Mālama, the act of cherishing and protecting, Hawaiians ensure the bond is constantly nourished and renewed. They know that if you care for the land it will care for them in return - and you’re invited to join the revered cycle.

What is the Mālama Hawai‘i Program?

The Mālama Hawai ‘i Program is a sustainable travel initiative that can gift you a deeper connection with the unforgettable Hawaiian Islands and the invaluable sensation of being part of a profound relationship.

What are the ways that I can give back?

From replanting native trees on O ‘ahu to cleaning up Maui hiking trails, you have many fulfilling options to choose from.

Fishponds were once an integral element of Hawaiian life. Passionate locals are reviving these carefully tended reservoirs, and you have the opportunity to aid in the restoration. You’re also encouraged to join ‘net patrol’the scouring of the coastline to collect fishing debris and protect marine wildlife. There’s even an invitation to help restore the USS Missouri, a battleship with a significant history.

Caring for the land will forge an irrevocable bond that will bring you joy long after you leave. These one of a kind experiences will etch the highlights of your vacation in your memory and on your heart.

How do I join the Mālama movement?

Many local Hawaiian organisations would be thrilled to have your contribution as a steward of the land. Chat to your Travel Associates travel adviser about what Mālama Hawai ‘i Program options you can weave into your tailored itinerary.

Island of Hawai‘i

What will you uncover on the Island of Discovery? The largest of the isles, the Island of Hawai ‘i is a natural wonderland of fierce volcanoes, exquisite valleys, and thundering waterfalls.

The Island of Hawai‘i is one of the most biodiverse landscapes on the planet. The coastline is young and rugged, but sandy havens range from the sundrenched Hapuna Beach to the black sands of Punaluu Beach. Crystalline waterfalls and tropical blooms adorn the east side of the island, while the west side rolls into verdant pasturelands.

Above it all looms Mauna Kea, considered the world’s tallest mountain if measured from its ocean base. An evening sojourn up this dormant volcano could reinvent your idea of stargazing; the altitude and lack of pollution reveal the heavens in dazzling clarity.

Kilauea makes up for its shorter stature with volcanic vigour. Linger after dark to stare into the red-hot crater and consider the effect of lava flows on the residents of the island. When eruptions are active, you can take a boat tour to see molten lava gush into the ocean: a once-ina-lifetime spectacle that will leave your heart pounding.

The Island of Hawai‘i boasts some of the state’s finest golf courses, with postcard-worthy feature holes. It’s often called the breadbasket of the Hawaiian Islands, thanks to the rich bounty of its volcanic soil. Tour a coffee plantation, visit a vanilla farm, or simply pluck an avocado from the side of the road. Those with a sweet tooth should circle the Big Island Chocolate Festival in their calendar; this two-day celebration features chef competitions, chocolate-themed art events, and a cacao bean taste off.

For a humbling wildlife encounter, sign up for a night-time swim with manta rays off the Kona coast. These gentle giants glide centimetres away from you in pursuit of the plankton that is lured by the lights of your tour vessel.

Kaua‘i

Older and more serene than her cosmopolitan siblings, Kaua ‘i is a land of unspoiled wilderness.

The nickname ‘The Garden Island’ can’t begin to describe the lavish greenery of this tranquil isle, where over 90 percent of the land comprises untouched rainforest and mountain wilds.

Fantasies of the ultimate nature escape are realised every day on Kaua‘i. A visit wouldn’t be complete without a visit to awe-inspiring Waimea Canyon, where you can hike among the red cliffs and plunging gorges or drink in dramatic aerial views from a helicopter.

An airborne perspective is one of the best ways to admire the Nā Pali Coast. When you see the place described as heaven on earth, you’ll wonder how the landscape before you can possibly be real. Join a cruise or boat tour if you’re eager to get close to Nā Pali’s sacred cliffs and coves.

Hawai‘i’s signature golden sands are on offer at Hanea Beach Park, which offers enticing

snorkelling options in the calm waters of summer against a magnificent backdrop of Mount Makana (Bali Hai). Anini Beach is known for its frequent sightings of sea turtles, and the divine crescents of Poipu are a generous gift from nature.

Complement your outdoor explorations with a visit to the Koloa Rum Company or a ride on the Kaua ‘i Plantation Railway, an interactive exploration of the island’s history and agriculture. On the last Saturday of the month, don’t miss an evening at the Kilauea Art Night, a market that features live music, lip-smacking food trucks, and local artisan wares.

There’s nothing like a cold treat after a day of adventures, and Wailua Shave Ice takes a Hawaiian favourite to gourmet heights. Brandon Baptiste’s culinary expertise shines through in the silky shave and intricate natural flavours.

Hawai‘i’s second-largest island is a fitting tribute to the legendary demigod. There’s an abundance of luxury resorts, yet the breathtaking Maui wilderness has space for everyone to find an oasis of tranquillity.

Maui beaches are among the best in the world. Makena Beach is a generous stretch of flawless sand bookended by dignified lava formations. For striking black shores and photo ops for days, visit Honokalani Beach, or opt for an adrenaline rush from the five-meter cliff jump at Kā‘anapali Beach.

Experiences on and in the water are sublime. Humpback whales make their annual migration past Maui in the winter, but sea turtles and manta rays frequent the waters all year round. There are world-famous breaks for avid surfers, but the waters are just as inviting for standup paddleboarders, snorkellers, and those looking to simply dip their toes in the blue-green Pacific.

Maui lives up to its nickname of ‘The Valley Isle’ with a luscious interior that’s teeming with adventure. Hiking trails wend by bamboo thickets, waterfalls, and extinct volcanoes. Save time to visit the Iao Valley, where emerald-draped peaks make it easy to understand why it’s a sacred place.

Spend a fragrant afternoon at the Ali ‘i Kula Lavender Farm or tour the Maui Tropical Plantation for an insight into Hawaiian agriculture. Time your visit around the Taste of Lahaina: a culinary event where Maui restaurants will vie for your approval at dozens of tasting booths.

After an early dinner of fresh poke, make your way up to the Haleakala summit and sit enthralled by the sunset views from 3,000 metres above sea level. As the blushing sky fades, the stars will twinkle into existence, lighting the way for your next Maui adventure.

The jewel-blue water and white sand of Waikīkī are every bit as idyllic as you’re imagining. Once you’ve had a fix of summer vibes, the possibilities for adventure unfold around you.

Wander the streets of Honolulu, where shopping, dining, and nightlife choices ooze with tropical glamour. Hike the volcanic plug of Diamond Head for fabulous views of the city or immerse yourself in history at Pearl Harbour before choosing a culinary delight from the city’s famous food trucks.

An alluring event calendar includes everything from the Waikīkī Spam Jam, which celebrates the region’s love of tinned ham, to the Haleiwa Arts Festival: an exhibition featuring hundreds of local artists.

A first-time surfing lesson on Waikīkī Beach is an iconic rite of passage, but experienced surfers dream of the epic winter swells of O‘ahu’s

North Shore. This laidback region is studded with local vendors and surf shops, offering a contrast to the glitz of Honolulu and its surrounds.

Bucket-list ocean experiences include scuba diving at Turtle Canyon and winter whale watching on an interpretive cruise. But head inland to discover a trove of lush rainforest and fascinating landmarks. You’ll be thrilled by the scenery on a drive, but explore by horseback, ATV, or via the island’s many hiking trails for a closer encounter.

Make time for a stop at the stunning Byodo-In Temple; a Japanese replica made more resplendent by the contrast of its red-lacquered glory against the verdant Koolau foothills.
