“The sheer tenacity that Canadian advisors have shown … is absolutely incredible”: Suppliers thank agents on another unforgettable Travel Agent Day by Kathryn Folliott TORONTO — As if celebrating one Travel Agent Day during a pandemic wasn’t strange enough, here we are in 2021, marking this special day on the retail travel calendar once again with travel restrictions in place. While no one in the industry could have predicted this turn of events, it’s also true that the almost 14 months of challenges as a result of COVID-19 have shone the brightest light on all the hard work and dedication from travel agents. And for that, suppliers are saying thank you. Some are offering agent incentives. Others are promoting agent contests. And all have words of support and appreciation. “You are the ones on the front line with customers,” says Collette’s GM, Brett Walker. “You are the ones fighting for their money while often out yours. You are the ones who banded together to help each other and the industry through tumultuous times and you are the ones who are nurturing future travel aspirations and, when the time comes, will make dreams take flight. I personally can’t wait for that day!” Walker adds: “Few outside our industry know how much we’ve all been through this past year, but those of us harnessed to this incredible industry and our passion, know all too well how difficult this pandemic has been for travel agents. A big, big, thank-you to all travel agents across Canada and everywhere.” MARKING TRAVEL AGENT DAY’S 11TH YEAR The woman who started it all, Colleen Lorenzen with Uniglobe Carefree Travel in Saskatoon, SK, says Travel Agent Day is more important now than ever. “We have had one hell of a year but are still here to work with our clients,” she says. Lorenzen came up with Travel Agent Day in 2011, as a way to recognize the hard-working team of agents in her agency, and to encourage other agency managers and owners, and suppliers, to do the same. Uniglobe Carefree

Travel has managed to keep its office going during the pandemic, with core staff, she says. Travelweek asked Lorenzen what the pandemic has taught clients about the work that travel agents do. “We have heard a lot from our clients about how they appreciate how we have helped them to navigate a difficult year. Whether it was bringing people home when the pandemic struck, to making sure that everyone received their travel credits, to going the extra mile with insurance claims to make sure that they felt they were taken care of,” she says. It’s been a tough year for suppliers as well as retailers. “In tough times and with some sales reps on lay off, we know it will be a harder year [for suppliers],” says Lorenzen. “I think they have found that we are truly partners in this business and we have worked together to take care of our mutual clients.” Travel agents are key to travel’s restart post-pandemic, and that’s a message ACTA President Wendy Paradis says she’s hearing from suppliers as well as consumers. Informed and up-to-date advice has never been more important. “Not only have we heard about the importance of working with a knowledgeable and professional travel agent from travel suppliers – we’ve heard it from travellers, and mainstream media as well,” says Paradis. “Reporters from all over Canada have reached out to ACTA on a consistent basis over the past year. In the early days of the pandemic, they were interested in hearing about how travel agents were helping

Canadians get home. More recently, [they’re] interested in the future of travel and we are seeing that they often state how important it will be to work with the professional travel agent.” SINGING THE PRAISES OF TRAVEL AGENTS Suppliers across Canada are singing the praises of travel agents. Says Deana Murphy, VP Retail Sales at Sunwing Travel Group: “This past year has shown us that the value of a travel advisor has never been more important. Travel advisors are the experts that customers trust and lean on for guidance, and the services they offer remain incredibly important to us at Sunwing Travel Group.” Murphy adds: “The pandemic has posed some unique challenges for our industry, and everyone at Sunwing is grateful for the continued support, hard work and dedication of the agent community. We know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and we’ll all get through this together." Ann Chamberlin, VP Sales, Scenic Group USA, says travel advisors “have endured an historic year of unknowns and fears and now can look forward to calmer seas ahead and a shining sunrise on the horizon. I call it ‘The Extraordinary Year of Service’. Service to their valued clients, service to the needs of their business & operations and requested service exceptions from the supplier partners they rely on to keep their travel business intact.” For the team at Unique Vacations May 5, 2021 | TRAVELWEEK | 3

TOP NEWS Canada Inc., the bond with the loyal travel agents who sell Sandals Resorts and Beaches Resorts took on new meaning this year. “Since day one of Sandals in 1981, our late Chairman and founder, the Hon. Gordon “Butch” Stewart, had the foresight to understand the power of the retail travel advisor,” Maureen Barnes-Smith, Vice President of Sales & Marketing, Canada tells Travelweek. “For 40 years, every level of our company has embraced his commitment and partnership to travel advisors. It's truly become part of our DNA. There’s nothing we do without thinking about how it will impact our travel advisor partners,” she says. When Mr. Stewart passed away at the beginning of this year, “the outpouring of love and support from travel advisors across Canada, and around the world, was overwhelmingly genuine,” said Barnes-Smith. “It’s something we’ll never forget as we continue his legacy of loyalty to travel advisors.” The pandemic has only made UVI’s bond with agents stronger, she says. “While the pandemic has changed so many things in our lives, one thing that didn’t was our relationship with Canadian travel advisors. In fact, it’s actually strengthened many of our connections, both professionally and personally, as we were all forced to ‘think outside the box’ and collaborate in different ways.” Barnes-Smith adds: “The creativity, the resourcefulness and the sheer tenacity that Canadian advisors have shown over the last year and a half is absolutely incredible. I’m so proud that my team and I had a ‘virtual front row seat' to witness them in action and work alongside them to keep the travel dream alive for Canadians.” An extensive collection of Travel Agent Day incentives, contests and more will be featured in the Travel Agent Day edition of Travelweek Daily, coming out today, May 5. Travel Leaders Group pursuing upfront commissions as future bookings ramp up by Cindy Sosroutomo TORONTO — Will more suppliers heed the call for upfront commissions as the retail travel sector gets back on its feet? Travel Leaders Group’s John Lovell certainly hopes so. Lovell, President of Leisure Travel, Supplier Relations & Networks, tells Travelweek that the company is asking its supplier partners to consider compensation strategies that will generate cash for its members in the short-term. “Specifically, we have been asking for a portion of the overall commission to be paid once a client books the trip,” he says. “For example, if the client pays for half of the trip upfront, with the remaining half due 90 days prior to departure, we would like to see the travel professional earn half of their commission when the client makes their first half payment.” During a virtual news conference, Lovell noted that although the company is seeing bookings gain momentum for 2021, 2022 and beyond, travel advisors are still strapped for cash since they only get paid once clients travel. This, he said, puts undue pressure on members and the organization, which is why Travel Leaders Group is working behind the scenes to bring additional cash flow to members on a rapid basis. “As we exit the pandemic and our suppliers start to see cash coming in the door, I think we’ll have more robust discussions and find a good position for everybody to ensure that the distribution channel stays healthy,” he said. Having upfront commissions in place will give Lovell even more reason to be optimistic about the future. Noting that high-end luxury and experiential product is “selling extremely well,” Lovell confirmed that the company is in a “very good position” and that he remains hopeful of where it will be in the next six months. “I don’t think all is lost, I think the industry itself is going to come back a little bit sooner than people anticipate,” added Lovell. “Consumers are really seeking the advice of our travel professionals and I think as we exit this pandemic, which is going to come rather quickly, the travel advisor is in a very unique position.” 6 | TRAVELWEEK | May 5, 2021

THE CANADIAN NUMBERS & FALL REGIONALS As vaccinations continue to ramp up across Canada, with over 30% of all Canadians already receiving their first shot, Christine James, Vice President Canada-TL Network, is anticipating bookings to increase at the same time. “Where we’re sitting today for the

Although bookings are gaining momentum for 2021, 2022 and beyond, travel advisors are still strapped for cash since they only get paid once clients travel rest of the year compared to where we were in 2019, we’re at approximately 30% of where we were in 2019, which was our last normal year that we had,” she said. “Even better news, for 2022 we’re actually sitting flat compared to where we were in 2019 for future

bookings, and in some cases – especially on the cruise side – Canada is actually trending ahead of where we were in 2019 for 2022.” TL Network Canada is also seeing major growth as the Canadian branch of Travel Leaders Group, despite the pandemic. In 2021 to date, 16 new travel agencies have joined the network. In response to this momentum, James confirmed that Fall Regionals, held annually in key markets across Canada, are going ahead this year as live, in-person events. Taking place in November in Toronto, Vancouver and Edmonton, Fall Regions will follow strict safety protocols at venues that are larger than in previous years, to accommodate the need for social distancing. The Toronto event is expected to see 200 members in attendance, with Edmonton and Vancouver numbers anticipated to be 100 and about 120, respectively. TL Network Canada is also moving forward with 14 Mixers (regional events held in locations other than where Fall Regionals take place), from August to December. Though this is down from the typical 24 Mixers held annually,

TOP NEWS James is still encouraged by early response from members, especially as Travel Leaders Group counts down the days until its international EDGE conference on Oct. 18-21, 2021. This year’s conference, postponed from 2020 due to the pandemic, will return to Loews Royal Pacific Resort & Loews Sapphire Falls Resort in Orlando, Florida. “We’re all looking forward to reunite, not only with our Canadian membership but with our partners in the South,” said James. “We’re really pleased with the attendance that we’ve had so far and the response that we’re getting for our in-person events, which everyone cannot wait to get back to.” ADDITIONAL REVENUE FOR ADVISORS You know things are looking up for travel advisors when every new booking has an upgrade that brings in additional revenue. According to James, 80% of new bookings coming in are seeing upgrades, whether it be hotels going up from three to four stars or four to five, or trips being extended from one to two weeks. “It’s almost like every booking has additional revenue and additional commission for the travel advisor,” she said. “It’s so rare to see clients take the exact credit they had and stick with that booking because they didn’t spend anything, they didn’t go anywhere. They figure if they’re going to go, they’re going to go all out.” James also noted that with many clients still uncertain about travel this year, they’re “doubling down” on their bookings, using future travel credits to secure a 2022 trip in addition to booking shorter, less expensive trips closer to home for 2021.

CRUISING & NEW TRENDS Noting the “tremendous amount of cash” that’s being held by people who have hunkered down this past year and saved their resources, Lovell anticipates a mid-summer restart to North American homeport cruises, which would be most welcome after more than 13 months of cancellations. The CDC, he added, recently declared that some cruising could return by mid-summer. “I think they are going to be successful because if you look at what’s going on around the world, cruise lines have moved close to 600,000 passengers now. The incident of any breakout on

TL Network Canada's Christine James confirmed that Fall Regionals, held annually in key markets across Canada, are going ahead this year as live, in-person events. one of the ships is extremely small,” said Lovell. “I think they’ve done a great job in showing they can create a bubble and that they can keep passengers and crew safe, and I think the CDC is starting to realize that.” Lovell added that Travel Leaders Group will be setting a record number of passengers on 2022-2023 World Cruises and Grand Cruises and that all destinations, from Asia-Pacific to Alaska, are selling well. His advice? To book now as prices are almost sure to go up due to limited space.

Roger E. Block, President of Travel Leaders Network, also warned of early sellouts and lack of product due to an increased number of people booking “vaxications,” a new buzzword to describe vacations being taken by vaccinated travellers. As such, “people are going to places that are currently open like never before,” said Block, with bucket-list destinations doing particularly well. “While people used to dream about bucket lists, they’re now actually actively booking them. Higher-end product is being booked at an accelerating rate than pre-pandemic, and what we’re seeing is bookings are ahead for 2022 and also 2023,” he added. James also noted that the TL Network Canada is seeing another shift in group travel, with a lot of bookings that were initially made for just a couple or a couple with two kids, snowball into bookings of 10 or more as a way to reconnect with extended families. THE ROLE OF THE TRAVEL ADVISOR According to recent surveys by Travel Leaders Group, 82% of respondents are more likely, or same as before, to use a travel advisor. When asked why they are more likely to use a travel advisor now, 65% said it’s because advisors can provide the latest safety information, while 23% said agents can help change or cancel their tickets. “This just goes to show that people are looking for professionalism and assistance, they’re looking for someone to help guide them through this whole process and keep them safe,” said Block. Lindsay Pearlman, Senior Vice President International Leisure-Travel Leaders Network, added that even the OTAs are jumping onboard the travel agent bandwagon. He recently saw an Expedia commercial that touted the value and services of an agent. “I think it’s safe to say that the role of the travel advisor will be significantly different and much more important than it was in the past where we had to compete,” said Pearlman. “Consumers are now looking for safety, a sense of comfort, and they’re going to get that from a travel advisor.” May 5, 2021 | TRAVELWEEK | 7

POLICIES IATA and a long list of Europe’s aviation, travel and tourism sector associations are applauding the recent vote in the European Parliament on the EU’s proposed Digital Green Certificate Regulation. The EU is now one step closer to reopening travel across the 27-country bloc for summer 2021, in the wake of vaccination rollouts. As reported last week, the EU has also indicated that it is open to welcoming back fully vaccinated U.S. visitors. “Swift action and alignment among the institutions is now critical in order to make the certificates operational by June and ensure reciprocity with non-EU systems,” says a statement from a dozen European airline and travel associations, including IATA, CLIA, ECTAA and the ETC.

Greece

CRUISE Azamara has announced its resumption of operations with a series of Greece voyages beginning in August 2021. Sailing aboard the Azamara Quest, the five back-to-back ‘CountryIntensive Voyages’ and one classic Mediterranean sailing are seven days in duration and feature a total of 18 late-night stays in port, including Santorini, Rhodes and Heraklion. The first departure is set for Aug. 28. Voyages will open May 11 for fully vaccinated guests. Crew members will also be required to be fully vaccinated. Both passengers and crew must be fully vaccinated no later than 14 days prior to departure. Ponant will be requiring all guests and crew members to be vaccinated prior to departure. As it prepares for the resumption of sailing, the French cruise ship operator has announced that all passengers and crew over 16 years of age must be vaccinated before the cruise as well as show proof of a negative PCR test carried out within 72 hours of boarding the ship. Other cruise lines that have announced a similar proof of vaccination requirement in recent weeks include Windstar, Crystal, AQSC, Victory Cruise Lines, Royal Caribbean, NCL and more.

HOTELS Toronto public health officials are investigating a possible COVID-19 outbreak at the Crowne Plaza hotel where travellers arriving in Canada by plane are expected to quarantine. Toronto Public Health says it has assigned staff to identify all cases connected to the facility and advise on any appropriate health and infection-control measures. It says no further details are currently available due to privacy concerns. The Crowne Plaza is one of the designated quarantine hotels for travellers arriving in Canada through Toronto. The federal government’s 3-day hotel quarantine rule requires anyone flying into the country to isolate in a hotel for three nights to help reduce the risk of spreading the virus. 8 | TRAVELWEEK | May 7, 2021

Arnold Donald

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has named Carnival Corporation President and CEO Arnold Donald as its new Chair. Donald will represent the global private Travel & Tourism sector for WTTC. Donald’s appointment was announced at WTTC’s three-day Global Summit in Cancun, a world-first that welcomed hundreds of the world’s business leaders, government ministers and key decision-makers from across the global travel and tourism sector since the outbreak of the pandemic. Those in attendance gathered to discuss the road to recovery, with tens of thousands more joining virtually. Regular testing was made available for all delegates for the duration of the summit. More than 5,000 people tested positive for COVID-19 after flying back to Canada since mandatory quarantine hotels began in late February. That includes 3,748 people who tested positive the day they returned despite having to show a negative COVID-19 test taken no more than three days before they boarded their plane. Some 40% of those people were infected with one of the three variants of concern Canada is tracking. Another 1,411 people tested positive on the test required 10 days after they returned. The data is now current as of April 29, and the number of confirmed variants among travellers is three times as high as the data reported from seven days earlier as more test results were submitted to the Public Health Agency of Canada. The data suggest about 1.5% of incoming travellers test positive on the day they land in Canada.

Strongest indication yet in favour of vaccination certificates: Hajdu

Transat protecting agent commissions on COVID refunds in wake of CEEFC funding MONTREAL — Transat’s funding agreement with the Canada Enterprise Emergency Funding Corporation (CEEFC) is good news for the industry and, even better for travel agents, Transat says it will not be recalling commissions with the refunds. Transat has signed a funding agreement with the CEEFC that now allows it to offer refunds to travellers who were issued a travel credit due to COVID-19 for a trip scheduled to start on or after February 1, 2020. This policy applies to flights and packages booked by April 29, 2021. Going forward, should Transat make changes to its flight program, affected customers would also be eligible for a refund. Transat will protect agent commission with the refunds, says Annick Guérard, Chief Operating Officer of Transat. “Travel agents have shown unwavering resilience and support since the crisis began,” says Guérard. “That’s why we’re pleased to confirm that commissions earned by agents will not be recalled if their customers opt for a refund.” Among the parameters set by government authorities, clients who have a travel credit must submit their refund request to Transat by August 26, 2021. Clients must complete the request form available at airtransat.com/ refunds.

Transat is asking travellers who originally booked with a travel agent or online travel agency to contact the agent or agency directly. “We’ve been impatiently waiting for this moment, and we know our customers have been, too,” says Guérard. “Now that a funding agreement has been reached and the eligibility criteria have been established by the Government of Canada, we are delighted to be able to provide our customers with this long-awaited aid.” Last week Transat announced it had reached an agreement with the federal government to borrow up to $700 million in additional liquidity through the Large Employer Emergency Financing Facility (LEEFF). "The agreement reached with the Government of Canada provides us with an additional $700 million in liquidity, which is the amount we needed to move forward with confidence. Our strong balance sheet prior to the pandemic and the aggressive actions we have taken since have enabled us to weather this unprecedented crisis so far. With this support, we now look forward to resuming operations as soon as safe travel is possible and travel restrictions can be lifted. We will then be able to implement our plan to make Transat a solid and profitable company once again, one that will continue to symbolize leisure travel for its many customers in Quebec and elsewhere," said Transat President and CEO, Jean-Marc Eustache. "The funds obtained will also enable us to reimburse our customers whose travel had to be cancelled due to the pandemic under conditions that are sustainable for the company, which we welcome,” he added.

OTTAWA— The logistics are still being worked out but the federal government has given the strongest indication yet that vaccination certificates will be the way forward for Canadians looking to travel internationally post-pandemic. In recent months both Health Minister Patty Hajdu and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have signalled Canada’s interest in collaborating with global partners including the G7 countries on a system of digital certification for COVID-19 vaccination. And just last week Trudeau said, “Naturally, it’s to be expected” when asked about vaccination certificates for international travel. Recently CBC radio host Chris Hall asked Hajdu if the government is onboard. “Absolutely, Canadians need to be able to have the right kind of certification for international travel, because as we know, Canadians will want to travel internationally when things subside in terms of COVID-19, and they’ll want to be able to ensure they have the right credentials to do that from a vaccination perspective,” said Hajdu.

“As we know, Canadians will want to travel internationally” Hall asked Hajdu if the system would be up and running in time for travel later this summer. Hajdu replied: “Well, it depends, I suppose, on what the requirements will be internationally. There isn’t a consensus yet on what that looks like internationally. Countries are looking at different solutions. From our perspective we have a bit of a head start in terms of entry into Canada, we have ArriveCAN, the app, that allows for digital proof of testing for example, now, and a variety of other documents that people have to submit to enter Canada.” She added: “We’ll be working with our international partners to make sure that whatever the world lands on, Canadians will have documents in the appropriate format.” A recent Ipsos poll indicated that a majority of Canadians support vaccine passports for international travel. More indications that U.S.-port cruising could restart by midsummer WASHINGTON — A letter to the cruise industry sent by the CDC suggests cruising from U.S. ports could start by mid-July. Sent by the head of the Maritime Unit for the CDC’s COVID-19 response, the letter reads: “We acknowledge that cruising will never be a zero-risk activity and that the goal of the CSO’s phased approach is to resume passenger operations in a way that mitigates the risk of COVID-19 transmission onboard cruise ships and across port communities.”

“This is very exciting news. Finally, the CDC has responded to the cruise industry with game changing guidance to restart cruising in the U.S.” The CDC later said: “CDC looks forward to continued engagement with the industry and urges cruise lines to submit Phase 2A port agreements as soon as possible to maintain the timeline of passengers voyages by mid-July.” This latest news is in keeping with reports earlier this month that the CDC signalled a possible return to sailing U.S. ports for summer 2021. Cruise line executives including NCLH President and CEO Frank Del Rio, and Royal Caribbean Cruises President Richard Fain, say they’re cautiously optimistic that the new messaging from the CDC paves the way for a return to U.S. port cruising. In recent weeks many U.S.-based cruise lines including NCL, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Crystal, Silversea and more have announced 2021 sailings from non-U.S. ports. “This is very exciting news. Finally, the CDC has responded to the cruise industry with game changing guidance to restart cruising in the U.S.,” adds Capt. John Murray, CEO, Canaveral Port Authority. 12 | TRAVELWEEK | May 5, 2021

Disney Wish

Here’s why a vacation onboard the new Disney Wish “will be truly like a magical spell” CELEBRATION, FL — There’s nothing like a little Disney magic - or in this case, a 144,000-ton Disney Wish - to keep spirits hopeful as the industry looks forward to travel’s restart in the months to come. Bookings for Disney Wish, the fifth ship in the DCL fleet, open in less than a month, for sailings starting in June 2022. For Disney Cruise Line fans, it can’t come soon enough. Consumers and the trade got a sneak peek at the new ship with a special virtual event that included a 30-minute ‘ship tour’ in ‘Once Upon a Disney Wish’, followed by a panel discussion hosted by Disney Imagineers and the Disney Cruise Line team. Starting June 9, 2022 the Disney Wish will set sail its inaugural season of three- and four-night cruises to Nassau and Castaway Cay from its new home port of Port Canaveral. Bookings open to the general public on May 27, 2021. With new dining, entertainment and attraction concepts inspired by Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars adventures, new accommodation options with four royal suites, a Marvel Super Hero Academy at Disney's Oceaneer Club and more, vacationing on the ship “will be truly like a magical spell,” says Shelley Gold Witiak, DCL’s Director, Hotel Operations at the panel discussion.

DISNEY WISH ACCOMMODATION The ship’s 1,254 staterooms include 53 concierge staterooms and 23 concierge suites. Some 90% of the Disney Wish staterooms will be outside staterooms, including 948 verandah staterooms (70%) and 185 oceanview staterooms (20%). The other 10% are inside staterooms. More than 900 of the staterooms offer connecting doors. The 4,000-passenger ship has more than double the number of premium concierge staterooms and suites, including Disney’s first-ever staterooms located above the bridge, with floor-toceiling windows with unbeatable ocean views. Concierge guests have access to an exclusive lounge with private sun deck. Disney Wish will also debut four royal suites that accommodate up to six guests. Two of the four royal suites are two-storey suites, the first of their kind within the Disney fleet. With all the Disney Wish accommodation, “we took a look at what works on our other ships, and what can be improved upon,” said Witiak. “We added more storage options. We kept the queen beds.” There are also pull-down beds from the ceiling and pull-out sofa beds to maximize sleeping space. POOLSIDE ATTRACTIONS & THEMED DISTRICTS The first-ever Disney attraction at sea, the 760-foot water ride AquaMouse, immerses guests in ‘The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse’ with animated show scenes, lighting and special effects. It’s the star attraction in an expansive district themed to Mickey and friends. In addition to AquaMouse, the

NEWS area will feature six pools, staggered among tiered decks and surrounded by lounge chairs. There’s also an all-new Toy Story-themed district designed especially for families with toddlers and young children. TTAND President and founder, Flemming Friisdahl

The Travel Agent Next Door is expanding into Quebec TORONTO — Now with seven years under its belt, The Travel Agent Next Door is heading into a market that has long been on its list: Quebec. TTAND will offer its host agency services to Quebec travel agents and agencies, says TTAND founder and President, Flemming Friisdahl. “We are extremely excited to offer our services and support to Quebec agents. We have had many requests from Quebec agents and we feel the time is right now for us to enter Quebec,” says Friisdahl.

“We will be ready when the rebound comes – and there are strong signals that it is coming later this year – and even stronger in 2022”, says Friisdahl TTAND’s offering for the Quebec market will include a French magazine (through TTAND’s membership with Ensemble), a range of French language marketing services and tools and a French website for agents. Friisdahl says the website and marketing services and tools will be ready

in a couple of months. Friisdahl personally conducts meetings with prospective agents, and that will continue, he says, adding he looks forward to meeting with Quebec agents who are interested in joining the host agency. TTAND’s sales volume over its seven years in business has topped $500 million, fuelled by 508 Primary Agents and 380 Associate Agents. Friisdahl says TTAND has the highest ratio of support staff to agents in the industry, with 45 staff support staff. He says TTAND’s ‘firsts’ among host agencies include: • The only online system enabling the agent to charge a cancellation fee or a ‘planning to go’ fee or any fee to accommodate agents who want to charge fees. • The only host agency to have 18 hours of ticketing support six days per week with no ticketing fees on any issuing of the ticket. • The only host agency to have developed its own proprietary websites where agents can customize 90% of the site themselves. • The only host agency developing a group module which can collect the customer’s credit card and personal information and still be PCI compliant. Says Friisdahl: “This past year has been a devastating one but it has also created opportunities. We will be ready when the rebound comes — and there are strong signals that it is coming later this year – and even stronger in 2022.”

“There is a change in the air”: Destination weddings seeing some traction, says DWHSA TORONTO — “Small and safe” is how DWHSA’s Liz Scull described destination weddings, post-pandemic, just a few weeks ago. Fast-forward to today, with 30% of Canadians already receiving their first COVID-19 vaccine shot, and she says that description may no longer apply. “There is a change in the air,” says Scull, who joined Destination Wedding & Honeymoon Specialists Association as its new General Manager, Canada last month. “For 2021 I still say destination wedding bookings will still be low, but with 2022 bookings, quotes and inquiries have slightly increased in recent weeks. More and more are being vaccinated, they feel it is more likely that it will be safe to travel again in 2022 and confirm a wedding date.” As an example of how the scope of destination weddings has broadened in just a few weeks, Scull thinks back to a wedding couple, both teachers, who recently inquired about a March 16 | TRAVELWEEK | May 5, 2021

Break 2022 wedding in Playa Mujeres with a very healthy 80-person guest list. Quotes, in recent weeks, says Scull, have been on the larger side. She does, however, note that prices are on the rise as more wedding venues and resorts book up. This means that even if couples may have saved during the pandemic, a budget that would have covered all their costs in 2020 and 2021 may not be enough for a wedding in 2022. “The couple provided quite a reasonable budget and I thought, ‘Easy-peasy’ with this budget,” says Scull. “But when I received the quote from the resort, it was $1,000 over their per person budget, when in the past their budget would have easily covered the package price. Prices have increased for many reasons, whether it be due to safety costs, reduced capacity, gas increases, security costs and more.” Scull is advising all couples to book their future weddings as soon as possible, as “the big budget they have now may be the everyday price in 2022.” But are couples willing to lock in a date, destination, resort and group size at this time, given how uncertain everything is? Luckily, suppliers are doing their best to accommodate, says Scull. “Suppliers and tour operators are trying to be as flexible as possible, but supply and demand will be the answer. If your group increases in size, there may not be the space or prices will increase. If the resort is struggling for bookings, I believe they will increase the block at the same price. I would go over supplier terms & conditions

thoroughly and have these questions answered during the consultation with the couple,” she adds. “Flexibility and being able to cancel or change their wedding group is what surveys are showing couples want.” Other emerging trends that Scull has noticed as a result of the pandemic include elopements, combined wedding-honeymoon trips for longer holidays, livestreaming ceremonies to allow friends and family at home to take part, symbolic ceremonies over lawfully-binding ones, and off-site ceremony venues since couples may no longer need the resort’s full catering services. As for which destinations she’s recommending to couples, triedand-true locales like Mexico, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic “will lead the way in demand since their entry requirements are very manageable and resort companies have stepped up to offer on-site testing.” One such company is Sandals Resorts, which announced back in January that it would be offering complimentary in-resort PCR testing through end of March 2021. Though there has been no word whether the company will be extending this offer, it has, however, gone out of its way to accommodate wedding couples with regards to safety and service. Its new Weddings Platinum Protocols of Cleanliness program, for example, includes hygiene practices across 18 touchpoints, hospital-grade disinfectants, electrostatic sprayers, UV lighting to inspect cleanliness, air duct sanitization in each room before guest arrivals,

NEWS steam cleaning of carpeting and more. Plus, wedding venue capacity has been reduced, tables of eight at receptions have been reduced to six, and buffets and specialty food stations have been eliminated, with all food now plated and served by staff wearing masks. “In true Sandals fashion, we went one step further to develop specific protocols for our brides and grooms to make sure that no one’s plans to the altar will falter,” says Marsha-Ann Donaldson-Brown, Director of Romance at Sandals Resorts International. “Whether a couple chooses our free tropical wedding (available to all guests with stays of three nights or longer), or a Sandals Customizable Weddings that’s a reflection of their personal style and taste, they can rest assured that we’ve covered all the bases and expect more hyper-personalized service.”

“They weren’t quite sure it was possible in just over a week but needless to say, the couple was completely blown away with just how easy and seamless the entire process was.” With all safety protocols in place, Donaldson-Brown adds that future wedding bookings “are looking quite good on the horizon,” which she credits to Sandal’s stellar reputation. While some couples are booking as far out as two years, there are others who are booking as soon as three months in advance – and less. One couple, she adds, planned a last-minute wedding in just eight days after their original wedding venue in Saint Lucia unexpectedly closed. “A few text messages and phone calls later, they were speaking with one of our amazing wedding planners who confidently told them not to worry, we would create a destination wedding of their dreams at Sandals Grande St. Lucian inside our dream Over-the-Water Serenity Wedding Chapel,” says Donaldson-Brown. “They weren’t quite sure it was possible in just over a week but needless to say, the couple was completely blown away with just how easy and seamless the entire process was.” Of course, this comes as no surprise considering that in a typical year,

thousands of wedding ceremonies are held across all 18 Sandals Resorts and Beaches Resorts properties. The Weddings team is well accustomed to catering to every need, and that hasn’t changed during a pandemic. This means being able to accommodate an uptick in elopement ceremonies, smaller wedding gatherings (“or as I like to call them, love bubbles,” says Donaldson-Brown), outdoor wedding venues and receptions as well as live-streaming services that allow friends and family at home to take part in the festivities. And travel agents will also be keen to know that couples are even planning not one, but two weddings celebrations, says Donaldson-Brown, the first being an intimate ceremony followed by a larger celebration down the line, when the time is right. To help agents plan future weddings now, Donaldson-Brown is reminding them about Sandals’ real-time wedding planning solutions, from 360-degree digital resort tours and photos that allow couples to preview properties from home, to the Sandals Virtual Wedding Design Experience during which they will be transported to a virtual customizable wedding showroom with their wedding planner. There’s also the Ultimate Digital Wedding Planning Tool that allows couples to browse through décor inspiration, venue locations and wedding services like hair, makeup and photography. And for those whose clients say it’s just too risky to get married abroad anytime soon, Donaldson-Brown is quick to add that not only does Sandals have a new Cancellation Protection Benefit (guests who cancel for whatever reason at least 31 days prior to check-in will receive a full refund on the land portion with zero penalties), the Caribbean has also been proven to be a safe destination during the pandemic. “Those stringent entry requirements and health and safety measures implemented by our local governments, combined with the strong protocols that we’ve created and put into place at Sandals Resorts are a matchmade in heaven – pun intended!” she says. “I want to assure couples that they can still get married – safely – in the Caribbean, in the most romantic setting imaginable with the same world-class service and luxurious amenities they’ve come to expect at Sandals Resorts.”

Input from MP Michelle Rempel Garner highlights ACTA’s latest webinar TORONTO — Few stats are cheering these days but here’s one takeaway from ACTA’s latest webinar that at least bodes well for the future: 87% of Canadians say they miss travelling. And when that pent-up demand finally starts to trend, information will be key to reassuring Canadians looking to travel - and that’s where travel agents come in. That’s the word from Jennifer Hendry, Senior Research Associate with the Canadian Tourism Research Institute, who took part in ACTA’s webinar for The Conference Board of Canada. Also featured in the webinar: MP Michelle Rempel Garner, who has been outspoken during the pandemic about the need for the federal government to step up with sector-specific financial assistance for Canada’s airline and travel industries. OUTBOUND TRAVEL INTENTIONS “It’s no secret that Canadians miss travelling,” says Hendry. While the vaccination rollout is heartening, it will take months for the vast majority of Canadians to get vaccinated, and that means Canada’s travel recovery won’t really start until the very end of 2021 and into early 2022, she says. According to the Conference Board of Canada’s Q2 survey figures, three-quarters of Canadians without travel plans cited COVID factors as the primary barrier for travel, up from two-thirds in the previous survey earlier this year. Three-quarters of respondents said they won’t travel internationally until they are vaccinated. And two-thirds of respondents said they wouldn’t consider flying internationally (66%) or to the U.S. (65%) until at least late 2021. Travellers surveyed also reported a high level of concern for COVID exposure, although the top-box score for 18 | TRAVELWEEK | May 5, 2021

the U.S., one of the most often-cited destinations of concerns, had dropped from 83% down to 69% since the last survey. The vaccination rollout in the U.S. now has 40% of Americans with at least one dose, and 25% have been fully vaccinated.

“I feel that the Canadian government’s response in terms of travel has always been reactive," said MP Rempel Garner. ACTA’S PRIORITIES With the Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB) set to start winding down in July, and with no sector-specific assistance for the travel industry in the federal government’s 2021 Budget, ACTA’s lobbying and advocacy priorities over next 30 days are: . Extend the critical CEWS, CERS and EI programs at maximum support to the end of year, or 90 days after travel restrictions lifted . Maintain the CRB benefits at the current $500/week level to the end of 2021, or 90 days after travel restrictions lifted . Extend the RRRF (Regional Relief and Recovery Fund) application deadline and other liquidity programs (CEBA, HASCAP, etc) to the end of 2021, or 90 days after travel restrictions lifted, and expand the accessibility to sole proprietors for programs where this criteria is not in effect. . Extend the CRHP (Canada Recovery Hiring Program) to the end of 2021, or 90 days after travel restrictions lifted. ACTA President Wendy Paradis said

ACTA is also focused on highlighting the gaps with the protection of commissions. While Air Canada and ACV have been making positive adjustments to refund policies, in the wake of Air Canada’s April 12 announcement of its financial assistance package with the federal government, gaps in commission protection with other airlines and suppliers remain, says Paradis. “HOTEL QUARANTINE IS WINDOW DRESSING” MP Michelle Rempel Garner joined the webinar with a message for agents: Make your message heard with MPs, loud and often. “It is so important for each and every one of you to be talking to your MP” about the perilous situation facing the retail travel sector, said Rempel Garner, adding that there’s “a bit of a disconnect sometimes” between the government officials making the decisions, and the travel agents struggling to get business. She empathized with what the retail travel industry is going through. “It’s a real honour to speak to you today,” she told webinar attendees. “With this prolonged period of uncertainty … I can’t imagine what it’s been like for you.” Rempel Garner has been vocal about the need for sector-specific assistance for Canada’s airline industry. During the webinar she also called out the federal government for its lack of re-start plan for a safe reopening of Canada’s borders post-pandemic. “I feel that the Canadian government’s response in terms of travel has always been reactive,” she said, adding that the lack of a plan with benchmarks in place for travel’s re-start is also concerning. The flights bans, most recently for

NEWS India and Pakistan flights, “are a mark of failure to put in stronger systems” ahead of dire third wave outbreaks in those destinations, she said. About the hotel quarantine requirements, Rempel Garner called the hotel quarantine “window dressing” and said the rule hasn’t been anything that has materially changed public health outcomes for the better in Canada’s fight against COVID-19.
