TOP NEWS

A hopeful winter: Travelweek’s latest Future of Travel conference highlights sunny outlook TORONTO — A lot has changed since Travelweek’s very first Future of Travel virtual conference back in June 2020. Most notably, the majority of Canadians are now considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19. The federal government finally eliminated Canada’s mandatory hotel quarantine and reopened its borders to fully vaccinated international tourists. And just last week, the United States confirmed the reopening of the U.S.-Canada land border to fully vaccinated Canadians on Nov. 8. All this sets the travel industry up for a robust winter season, which is why Travelweek’s latest virtual conference, ‘Future of Travel: Winter Sun Getaways’ brought together the industry’s top experts, across all travel sectors, to discuss upcoming trends, booking patterns and need-to-know winter offerings. Having taken place on Oct. 6, with thousands of travel agents and industry professionals tuning in, it was the fifth installment in Travelweek’s hugely successful ‘Future of Travel’ virtual conference series. “With winter just around the corner, we felt it was important to once again bring the industry together to generate real excitement for all the progress we’ve made since the start of the pandemic,” says Devin Kinasz, Travelweek’s publisher. “We’re in a far better position today than we were just a few months ago. More and more flights are resuming, borders have reopened and hotels are once again seeing high occupancy levels. As all our speakers have attested to, there’s plenty of hope heading into the winter season.” Viewers heard from keynote speakers representing Bahia Principe, Sunwing, Carnival Cruise Line, the Florida Keys, Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA), Porter Airlines and Destination Wedding & Honeymoon Specialists Association (DWHSA). In addition, presentations, videos and support were provided by key sponsors that included The Bahamas, Barbados, Grenada, Bonaire, AMResorts, Oasis Hotels & Resorts, Sandals Resorts, Colombia, Dominican Republic, The Palm Beaches, Experience Kissimmee and Turks and Caicos.

“There are good bookings for Q1 2022”

“Distancing is organically occurring”

Bahia Principe’s Chief Operating Officer, Antonio Teijeiro, said that the company is gearing up for the winter season, with 10 out of its 19 resorts in Mexico, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic already fully open and operational and another six properties reopening by year’s end. When asked what kind of capacity he’s seeing, particularly from Canada, Teijeiro said that “it hasn’t been easy” but that the company has been seeing steady recovery since spring 2021. “Due to Canada’s precautionary measures, the demand for the Caribbean from Canada was non-existent. But nevertheless, since this summer we’ve seen a slow recovery. The numbers for fall 2021 are looking much better already and there are good bookings for Q1 2022,” he said. “We know that Canadians love to travel, there’s a lot of pent-up demand. We’re very encouraged by the trend we’re seeing from the Canadian market and we hope that 2022 will bring significant growth.” Teijeiro added that Bahia Principe has used this downtime to renew and refresh its hotels. In November 2020, the company reopened Bahia Principe Grand Tulum in Riviera Maya with upgraded rooms, theatre, restaurants, lobby and pools, all inspired by Mayan culture. In the Dominican Republic, the Bahia Principe Grand El Portillo’s main pool, restaurants and bars were also all renovated. “We are working on other projects and we’ll let you know in the future about them,” said Teijeiro. “We can’t stand still, we are very energetic.”

Despite Florida making headlines in recent months for its stance against masking and vaccine passports, Markham McGill, Director of Sales, The Florida Keys & Key West, assured viewers that the destination is taking the health and safety of Canadians and all visitors very seriously. Though there isn’t a mask mandate in place, people are “absolutely free and encouraged to wear them when entering businesses or wherever you feel it’s comfortable to do so,” he said. The Keys, McGill added, checks off all the boxes for a destination during these times when value is being place on outdoor activities and wide, open spaces. “It’s not condensed here, we’re a water-based county so there’s frankly a lot of open space,” he said. “Distancing is organically occurring here with people out on these remote island spaces, on their boats in the water and also under the water. You’re definitely not jammed together.”

“We saw the pandemic as shifting the competitive landscape” Despite the ongoing precariousness of the situation, with everything still very much progressing “week to week,” Andrew Dawson, Sunwing Travel Group’s Chief Operating Officer, is encouraged by the fact that the company has still been able to resume operations to key sun destinations like Mexico, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Jamaica, St. Maarten and Aruba. When asked October 21, 2021 | TRAVELWEEK | 3

TOP NEWS whether other destinations are in the pipeline, Dawson said that the company is being “very guarded” in terms of reopening routes. “However, we’re seeing good loads on what’s currently operating and we’re delighted that we’ll soon be able to actually have our first departures from Western Canada – Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver to Cancun and Cabo San Lucas,” he said. “Our main departure points have been Montreal and Toronto and we’ll be adding new destinations from there. We also have Costa Rica coming, we’ll expand on Mexico operations in the next couple of weeks by adding Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta. If the Dominican Republic keeps going well with Punta Cana, I can see us adding Puerto Plata. And if Cuba does take off then there’s Cayo Santa Maria and Holguin, so plenty of things to look forward to implementing,” he added. Porter Airlines is also making huge strides, recently announcing an order for 80 new planes and brand new flights to more U.S. sun destinations plus Mexico and the Caribbean. When asked why the airline is expanding now amid such uncertainty in the industry, Michael DeLuce, Porter’s President & CEO, said that expansion plans were already in the works, prior to the pandemic. “We saw the pandemic as shifting the competitive landscape and providing incremental opportunity – not during the pandemic, of course, but beyond,” he said. “We see the middle of 2022 being a much stronger portion of the recovery,” he said. DeLuce added that purchasing aircraft during the pandemic allowed for more availability and “very aggressive” pricing. “Ultimately, the Porter passenger base was really looking for us to expand beyond just our regional footprint,” he said, noting the limited range of Porter’s existing Q400 aircraft. “Now, with the E195-E2 platform and up to 80 aircraft deliveries starting mid-2022, we’ll be Got a story idea? able to expand, coast to coast, across North America including Mexican destinations and the Caribbean. It provides for lots of runway for growth in the future to expand the Porter network and really deliver the product that we redefined on short-haul travel to the wider North American markets.”

“We definitely got your back” Throughout the conference, keynote speakers and travel partners sang the praises of travel agents, who they all acknowledged as playing an essential role in the industry’s recovery. Adolfo Perez, SVP of Global Sales & Marketing at Carnival Cruise Line, for example, said that no other job has been tougher than that of the travel agent, who has had to keep track of constantly-changing travel policies, country requirements, border closures and, in the case of cruise lines, extension after extension of operational pauses. “Their perseverance during this really tough time has been so admirable,” he said. “Keeping up with all this stuff has been really hard and I can’t say thank you enough for that.” Perez highlighted the many ways Carnival is supporting agents throughout this time, starting with a longstanding policy that paid out commission on the

full value of a Future Cruise Credit (FCC). With this policy in place since 2016, and with the start of the pandemic, Carnival was not only protecting the full commission on the FCC but also on the original booking that was paused. Also of note was Carnival’s commitment to protect 2020 commission levels into 2021, as well as 2021 commission levels into 2022. “Regardless of what number of bookings that are made in sale in 2021 this year, your commission rate will not be changed from what it was as far back as 2019,” said Perez. He added that Carnival is also focused on more engagement with the agent community, whether through webinars or hosting its hugely successful WUATA events virtually, and has created toolkits to help agents with virtual cruise parties and marketing. Perez noted that Carnival was one of the few suppliers to launch a consumer-facing campaign that promoted the value of a travel advisor, encouraging travellers to book not only their cruises with an agent, but also their holidays and business travel, too. “I hope that travel advisors see all that we’ve put into this,” he said. “it hasn’t been perfect, we’ve had challenges, but we definitely got your back and I hope that message has gotten across really strongly to everybody.” CONTENTS COPYRIGHTED We acknowledge the financial support of the Government of Canada.

FUTURE OF TRAVEL Honest Eco Sustainable Nature Tours

The Keys to Happiness TORONTO — Comprising five regions – Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine and the Lower Keys, plus the offbeat and close-knit community of Key West – the Florida Keys can be considered a true outdoor destination. From al fresco dining to water sports and eco-activities, much of daily life in the Keys revolves around being outside, whether on the beach, in nature or simply out in the open salt-tinged air. Here are some top outdoor activities to keep in mind this winter season: FOOD TOURS Culinary delights abound in the Florida Keys and Key West, with several tours that take epicureans through historic neighbourhoods to sample bits and bites from a variety of restaurants and watering holes. Florida Keys Food Tours has a four-hour gastro-adventure that incorporates much of the history of the islands, especially that of Islamorada. Guests will meet local chefs and learn about ingredients indigenous to the islands, and dine at unique eateries featured on Food Network’s ‘Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.’ In Key West, foodies can embark on a three-hour walking tour with Key West Food Tours, which visits six locally-owned establishments in the historic

old town. Delicious food tastings at specialty shops and ethnic eateries, enough for a hearty lunch, are included. ADVENTURE There’s no better way to see the Keys than on the water. Big Pine Kayak Adventures offers half- and full-day kayaking nature tours, shallow-water skiff eco-tours, backcountry sailing catamaran cruises and shallow-water fishing tours at mile marker 30.2. Tours are led by Captain Bill Keogh, a Lower Keys resident who has worked as a naturalist guide, educator and professional photographer for over 20 years. For a one-of-a-kind backcountry experience, Get Up and Go Florida Keys offers incredible tours in clear kayaks, allowing guests to view the fascinating underwater world beneath them. Groups are limited to just 10 paddlers, making it easy for guests to hear their guides share insight into local waterways and surrounding wildlife. ECO & WILDLIFE The Florida Keys is home to an abundance of wildlife, including the endangered Key deer, the smallest subspecies of the North American white-tailed deer. To see this tiny, beautiful animal, head to the 9,200-acre National Key Deer Refuge, home to impressive rockland forests, tropical hardwood hammocks,

freshwater and salt marsh wetlands and mangrove forests. To view underwater wildlife, Honest Eco Sustainable Nature Tours offers four-hour dolphin watching and snorkelling tours via a new eco-friendly option: SQUID, Key West’s first electric-powered charter boat. During the tour, guests can watch wild dolphins play, sleep, hunt and mate in Key West’s turquoise waters before hitting the water for some snorkelling. BECOME A SPECIALIST To better assist advisors, the destination has developed the Key Lime Academy, an online video-learning platform that provides the necessary education to become certified Florida Keys destination specialists. The platform includes seven video-driven modules that highlight various properties, attractions and history, each of which is followed by a short quiz in multiple-choice format. The e-learning series takes approximately 30 minutes to complete and can be done either incrementally or in a single sitting. Upon completion, advisors with a grade of 80% or higher will receive an electronic certificate acknowledging that they are now a Florida Keys destination specialist. Dominican Republic simplifies entry requirements for Canadians TORONTO — The Dominican Republic is making it easier for Canadians to visit this winter season, with no mandatory PCR testing upon arrival in place. With regular flights resuming from major cities to popular airport hubs in Punta Cana and Puerto Plata, visitors will have a random temperature check and breath tests administered at the airport upon landing. Prior to their incoming and outgoing flights they will also be required to complete a user-friendly arrival e-ticket at www.migracion.gob.do that includes a health declaration and immigration information. According to David Collado, Minister of Tourism of the Dominican Republic, the system was created to simplify the arrival and departure process and ensure that Canadians know they are welcome back this winter.

“Many islands have complex and confusing rules – it’s a barrier to travel. While major airlines are requiring PCR tests to board the plane, some destinations also require post-arrival PCR testing and quarantine. This is not only stressful, it can be expensive,” said Collado. “With vaccine levels high in both the DR and Canada, we are confident of providing a safe and carefree vacation to our visitors without the need

for post-arrival testing. Canadians are waiting to exhale and there is no better place to plan a vacation in the sun this winter,” he added. In addition, hotels must adhere to stringent sanitation and safety rules, with all hotel staff fully vaccinated and currently awaiting booster shots for maximum immunity. “...our tourism sector has rallied splendidly and is ready to roll out the red carpet for Canadians longing for that Caribbean getaway,” “Coming off the heels of the downturn in international travel and even the loss of flights from Canada, our tourism sector has rallied splendidly and is ready to roll out the red carpet for Canadians longing for that Caribbean getaway,” she added. DESTINATIONS Fiji will be opening up to visitors once more starting this December after a near two-year closure due to the pandemic. The announcement comes on the heels of Fiji reaching its goal of 80% vaccination of the eligible population with both doses. While travel restrictions will be lifted in December, entry requirements will remain in place, including a full vaccination policy, a negative RT-PCR test taken 72 hours prior to departure from a home country, a rapid test taken 48 hours after arrival at a resort, as well as an additional test prior to returning back home, based on individual home country requirements. Unvaccinated children under the age of 18 will be able to travel to Fiji accompanied by a vaccinated adult. Travel insurance is highly recommended. According to the Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Tourism, the country saw the best month of September in its history, with a higher number of arrivals than in 2018, 2019 and 2020. This past September, the country welcomed a total of 365,544 nonresident visitors, which represents a recovery of 14% in the level of attendance recorded before the COVID-19 pandemic, and more precisely in September 2019, and of 25% in comparison to September 2020. This generated US$412 million in revenue for the country. To date, the arrivals of non-resident tourists by plane to the Dominican Republic in 2021 exceeded 3.3 million passengers, more than 2019 figures. Hotel activity also reached its post-pandemic peak with 87% of rooms in operation, and an occupancy rate of 54% on weekdays and 61% on weekends. St. Kitts and Nevis have shortened their mandatory ‘vacation in place’ quarantine down from four days to 24 hours for fully vaccinated international air travellers. Within 24 hours upon arrival, travellers staying at their ‘Travel Approved’ accommodation will be tested for COVID-19. Upon receipt of a negative RT PCR test, they are free to explore the islands. As previously announced, only fully vaccinated travellers are allowed into St. Kitts and Nevis. Children under the age of 18 accompanying their fully vaccinated parents or guardians are exempt. A traveller is considered fully vaccinated when two weeks have passed since receiving their second dose of a two-dose vaccine series, or two weeks after they have received a single dose vaccine. Mixed dose vaccination using the approved vaccines is accepted. All travellers must still submit proof of negative test results from an RT PCR test 72 hours prior to arrival on St. Kitts and Nevis.

U.S. land border will reopen to fully vaccinated Canadians on Nov. 8, mixed doses OK TORONTO — The U.S. land border will reopen to fully vaccinated Canadian travellers on Nov. 8. Also on Nov. 8 the U.S. will reopen to fully vaccinated foreign nationals arriving by air. White House Assistant Press Secretary Kevin Munoz announced the news in a tweet, saying: “The U.S.’ new travel policy that requires vaccination for foreign national travellers to the United States will begin on Nov. 8. This announcement and date applies to both international air travel and land travel.” Last week the U.S. announced that it was reopening its land border to Canadian travellers in early November, with no specified date. The U.S. had indicated back in September that it would reopen to fully vaccinated foreign nationals arriving by air.

Also last week, the CDC announced that when the U.S. reopens its land borders to non-essential travel on Nov. 8, people who received doses of two different COVID-19 vaccines will qualify as fully vaccinated. People with “any combination” of two doses of a vaccine approved by either the U.S. Food and Drug Administration or the World Health Organization “are considered fully vaccinated,” the agency said in a statement. The news also confirms what the White House acknowledged earlier that day would be a likely development: that the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, approved by the WHO but not the FDA, would be deemed acceptable.

Many families with young kids are also be waiting to hear whether unvaccinated children under the age of 12 can cross the land border without restrictions. So far indications from the Sept. 20 announcement about fully vaccinated foreign nationals suggest that exemptions will be made for young kids who don’t yet have access to vaccinations. The Canadian government’s advisory against all non-essential travel is still in place after more than a year and a half. In recent weeks ACTA, ACITA and other travel industry execs, as well as the consumer media, have have stepped up calls for a more country-specific risk-based travel advisory.

TORONTO — If there was any doubt that Germany is one of Europe’s top cultural destinations, just ask the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, which has recognized even more of the country’s landmarks and attractions in 2021. “With this year’s new additions, 51 natural and cultural heritage sites in Germany now bear the UNESCO World Heritage seal of quality,” said Petra Hedorfer, CEO of the Board of Directors of the German National Tourist Board (GNTB). “UNESCO World Heritage Sites are an important facet in the brand essence of Germany as a travel destination.” Included in this year’s list is the Mathildenhöhe artist colony in Darmstadt, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in 1899 by the Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig, it was considered an important center of modern art and architecture up until the beginning of World War I. The colony’s buildings were created by artist members and were expanded in the early 1900s during international exhibitions. Today the property comprises 23 elements, including the Wedding Tower and the Exhibition Hall, both built in 1908. Europe’s health resorts, which reached their pinnacle between 1700 and the 1930s, are also being recognized by UNESCO. A total of 11 European locations in seven countries have been listed as ‘Important spa towns in Europe,” of which Germany has contributed three: Baden-Baden, Bad Ems and Bad Kissingen. In total, Germany has more than 350 spa and medicinal baths. In 2019, the country recorded 8.4 million international overnight stays at its health resorts.

In addition, the ShUM cities of Mainz, Worms and Speyer, considered to be the cradle of Europe’s Jewish community, have been added to the World Heritage Sites list. ShUM is an acronym comprising the first letters of each city’s Hebrew names. ShUM sites that have been recognized by UNESCO include the Speyer Jewish Court, the Worms synagogue district, and the old Jewish cemeteries in Worms and Mainz. The history of these places reflects Jewish life over the centuries, from persecution and genocide to present day faith and traditions. This year also saw the addition of the Lower Germanic Limes to the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the set of ‘Frontiers of the Roman Empire’ World Heritage Sites. The 249-mile-long river border separated the Roman province of Lower Germania from free Germania for about 450 years, starting around 15 BCE. Today, a large part of the remains still offers a fascinating glimpse into Roman military power and architecture. Finally, the western segment of the Danube-Limes, which runs approximately 373 miles from Bad Gögging in Babaria through Austria to Slovakia, have been added to the World Heritage Sites list. Contrary to popular belief, the Limes was not an insurmountable wall but rather a network of military fortifications and civil buildings. Parts of the earlier facilities are still visible today and are accessible to tourists, including the ‘Porta Praetoria’ in Regensburg. Air New Zealand, Qantas will require proof of COVID vaccination TORONTO — As Australia and New Zealand move closer to reopening, the flag carriers for both countries have announced new ‘no jab, no fly’ policies for passengers. Starting Feb. 1, 2022, Air New Zealand will require customers travelling anywhere on its international network to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. The new requirement will apply to all passengers aged 18 and older, arriving or departing New Zealand on an Air New Zealand aircraft. Customers who are not vaccinated will be required to present proof that vaccination was not a viable

option for them for medical reasons. “We’re getting ready to reconnect with the world and letting customers know what they need to do to be ready to take off when we can,” said Air New Zealand CEO Greg Foran. “Being vaccinated against COVID-19 is the new reality of international travel – many of the destinations Kiwis want to visit are already closed to unvaccinated visitors. The quicker we get vaccinated, the sooner we can fly Kiwis to places like New York, Vancouver and Narita.” Air New Zealand is also continuing to work on rolling out the IATA Travel Pass app. Meanwhile Qantas announced last month that it would require proof of COVID-19 vaccination for all passengers flying on international routes. The airline is aiming to begin resuming overseas flights by the end of the year. Qantas CEO Alan Joyce has long been a proponent of mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations for passengers. Back in November 2020 Joyce said that once vaccines became widely available, his carrier would likely require passengers to provide proof of vaccination before they can travel abroad or land in Australia.

The ship departed from Lyon

and sailed its way along the Rhone to Port-Saint-Louis, near Marseille. ACITA’s Coates honoured with Gerald Heifetz Trailblazer Advocacy Award Judith Coates, co-founder of the Association of Canadian Independent Travel Advisors, was honoured with the Gerald Heifetz Trailblazer Advocacy Award at the ACTA 2021 Canadian Travel Industry Summit. In addition to her work with ACITA, Coates also has a new role on the TICO Consumer-Industry Advisory Committee.

“For us it wasn’t a matter of consumer demand, it was a matter of access. We had plans in place since March 2021 to prepare for the day,” says Born. He and his colleagues first looked at which countries were open to vaccinated Americans and started promoting the ‘spirit of travel’ in May 2021. “For Canada, we chose to start our ‘Now is Our Time’ promotion now when we see a confidence growing in the Canadian market,” said Born. Avalon Waterways resumed sailings on July 27, 2021 in Europe and is currently offering two-thirds of its itineraries. The river cruise line plans to offer all tours for 2022.
