One agent’s story, and what the host agencies are saying, as more and more independent agents struggle with the decision to stay, or go By Kathryn Folliott TORONTO — Katherine Robertson was only months into her new career as a home-based travel agent when the global travel industry came to a very abrupt halt. She contracted with a host agency in summer 2019 to work on a team supporting a top producing agent, and was trained, set up and ready to start selling by October 2019. “I learned quickly to define my niche Mexico all-inclusives, Disney and family travel,” says Robertson. “I did as much training as I could fit in each day, joined Palace Pro Agents, became an AM Master Agent, a Hyatt Zilara and Hyatt Ziva Preferred Travel Agent, and graduated from the Disney College of Knowledge. My next plan was to learn all that I could about cruising. I was scheduled to attend Cruise360 in May 2020.” It wasn’t long before she made some sales: “I had bookings right away! The best feeling was when I received that first commission cheque. I spent it taking my husband out for dinner.” Then COVID hit. “There was a period of denial, disbelief, and eventually shock when the world completely shut down,” she says. Like so many other agents across Canada, Robertson began processing the cancellations, credits and refunds, “twice the work for less than zero pay – we were losing money and working harder than ever.” Her host agency offered plenty of support, “sharing any new information as it came in and reassuring us things would get back to normal. I was incredibly grateful.” But as the months dragged on with no end to the pandemic in sight, Robertson faced a tough decision. Ultimately, she left the industry. “The final straw was in October 2020 when I was required to renew my business license with the city ($350) and my license with Consumer Protection BC (CPBC) at a cost of nearly $800. CPBC was completely unwilling to waive their fee for BC travel agents, despite offering zero support to agents during the shutdown. A completely useless bureaucracy if you ask me.”
Asked if she would consider a return to retail travel when the industry stabilizes, she says she’s still undecided. “I was too new to have established a loyal clientele, and I'm really concerned that travel will still take another 2-3 years to fully return to normal,” she says. She bought out the remainder of her contract with her host agency. “Although it was a costly experience, I do not regret it. I met some incredible people and made some new friends along the way,” she adds. Robertson may have only been in the industry for a few months, but the decision she faced is similar to what thousands of other Canadian travel agents, most with many, many years of experience and equity in this business, are struggling with after a year and a half of the pandemic. Stay, or go? Solvency concerns are especially acute for independent agents. They’ve been shut out of government loan programs, and now the Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB) - a lifeline for so many during the pandemic - is winding down. With the Liberal party forming the new federal government in the coming weeks, ACTA President Wendy Paradis says efforts to secure continued financial aid for hardest hit sectors including the travel industry are ongoing, and stronger than ever. With nearly two years of little to no revenue, “many travel agencies and independent travel agents are facing immediate challenges to their continued operations. There is an urgent need for
continued wage, rent, and CRB-type financial support for hardest-hit tourism businesses so they can survive to see recovery,” says Paradis. Thousands of independent travel agents across Canada have relied on the CRB for survival during the past 18 months, she adds. “If independent travel agents are not included in the platform promise, government must introduce a new program that is like the CRB targeted to hardest-hit persons in the tourism sector,” says Paradis. Currently the CRB is scheduled to end by Oct. 23. Judith Coates, one of the co-founders of the Association of Canadian Independent Travel Advisors, says ACITA conducted a poll within its membership and several different host agency groups. There were 340 responses and the results were devastating, says Coates: “51% said they will have to close after the CRB ends, 29% are barely hanging on, only because they've incurred significant personal debt, and 20% have taken on other jobs to make ends meet until their travel business bounces back.” Tour operators are promoting sun vacations for winter 2021-22 and things are looking more positive than they have in months, especially with Canada’s high rate of vaccination. But for many Canadian travellers, unfortunately, the fear of variants and confusion over travel restrictions - not to mention the still-in-place travel advisory - could keep travel decisions in limbo. TOP NEWS And while there’s still hope that the new federal government will hear the industry’s urgent message, the clock is ticking and many agents fear they’re running out of time. “This is far from over and if the rules for CRB don't change independent contractors that work on commission will leave the industry. They have no other choice,” says Niche Travel Group owner Faith Sproule. Travelweek checked in with several host agencies to find out what they’re telling members in this increasingly difficult time. “We have had a few advisors give up on the industry, but actually relatively few,” says Mike Foster, President, Nexion Travel Group - Canada. “With the winding down of aid programs that have allowed people to keep their business, I do expect that it will force more people to make a difficult decision on their future.” Foster says one of the benefits of working as an Independent Contractor is that the agent has all of the advantages of owning their own agency but with very few real expenses. “It is much easier to keep their business open and operating with little income. In fact, we have been growing as experienced agents have joined our organization and we have also been attracting new entrants to the industry.” He adds: “As is so often the case, challenges bring opportunities, and while we are not yet done with the challenges, there are opportunities are on the horizon.” Joelle Goldman, Vice President, Host Services for Direct Travel in North America, says Direct Travel has welcomed more than 100 new independent travel advisors since spring of 2020. The travel industry “has had a very difficult 18 months and we’ve seen too many agencies close their doors,” she adds. “But we’re happy to report that Direct, and our Canadian leisure division Vision Travel, are financially healthy and we have been able to support our teams throughout the past 18 months with guidance and ongoing marketing. We are all looking forward to 2022 when we hope bookings will stick TRAVELWEEK
and ITAs will start to see their revenues return to 2019 levels and beyond.” TPI CEO Zeina Gedeon is also seeing new entrants, and new members. “We are getting many brick and mortar agencies, whether individuals or agencies, join TPI. For the first time ever we are getting agents join TPI that have $3 million, $5 million in sales,” she said. Most bookings now are moving to 2022 and 2023 rather than 2021, she added. Heather Baker, Director of Acquisitions & Social Media for Independent by Flight Centre, says “there’s no question that Independent agents
“51% of respondents in a recent ACITA poll said they will have to close their agency after the CRB ends, 29% say they're barely hanging on, and 20% have taken on other jobs to make ends meet.” have been among the hardest hit in the travel industry, one of the hardest hit industries throughout the pandemic. The majority of them are sole proprietors & commission based so there were many government assistance programs whose eligibility criteria failed to account for the unique role of Independent Contractor within our industry.” Baker says Independent by Flight Centre, alongside its agents, has worked with ACTA and other organizations to help bringing awareness to the politicians to lobby for recognition and assistance. Says Baker: “The sad fact is that due to this oversight there are some agents that have had to make the difficult choice to close their business. We have been speaking with our ICs that have concerns over their business on a oneto-one basis, and working closely with them on business plans to help ensure they can continue to do what they love. agents has been consistent throughout this pandemic: we are here for you, to support you, to advocate for you & we will weather this together and come out the other side stronger.” Baker adds: “We know we are headed in the right direction and hope the ACTA campaign & initiatives spearheaded by other associations like ACITA, will ensure the government takes another look at assistance programs such as the CRB and for specific sectors, like travel, extend the support to these small business owners.” Flemming Friisdahl, CEO and founder of The Travel Agent Next Door, says sales are picking up, and TTAND is seeing this in the amount of commission it is receiving and paying out to its partners. “We are running at almost 60% of 2019 sales for the past two months.” But home-based agents have been hit hard by the pandemic. “Unlike storefront where some of them can get grants or rent subsidies, the independent contractors have had some support but it is soon running out,” says Friisdahl. In talks with several of TTAND’s partner agents, Friisdahl says he’s hearing that some “have taken on side jobs to just make it a little easier.” With all the headway and progress ACTA has made with the federal government to keep the discussion around extended financial assistance on the front burner, there’s a real push to keep that momentum going now that the election is over. Says Friisdahl: “I also know ACTA is trying hard to make sure that we get funding starting after the election. We need ALL Independent Contractors to be calling and meetings with their MPs. This is super important and this is something only the Independent Contractors can do locally in their ridings. This is vital to raise awareness that we still need support until restrictions are removed.” Got a story idea? Questions or comments? Write to us at editorial@travelweek.ca

Got last-minute bookers? We asked 7 tour operators what and where to book By Cindy Sosroutomo TORONTO — With so much uncertainty hovering over travel, it’s not surprising that travellers are booking much further out than before the pandemic, opting for the ‘wait-and-see’ approach as travel restrictions and border closures continue to fluctuate. But with the delta variant taking hold in many countries around the world, and the majority of Canadians now vaccinated, we wanted to know: are Canadians looking to book a last-minute getaway before more restrictions potentially take hold? Taking into account accessibility, safety and affordability, we asked seven tour operators where last-minute vacationers should travel to right now. Here’s what they had to say: AIR CANADA VACATIONS According to Nino Montagnese, Vice President, Air Canada Vacations, “we are definitely seeing a strong demand for last-minute departures, particularly for Mexico and the Caribbean, Canada and even Europe,” in addition to long stays. When asked for just one destination that he would recommend right now, Punta Cana is tops in his book. “The Dominican Republic doesn’t require a COVID-19 test to enter and we have many flight options for Canadians to choose from, making it easier to escape the coming fall chill with a sunny getaway,” he says. ACV has many last-minute packages for 4-star resorts in Punta Cana starting at $649, tax included. COLLETTE Jeff Roy, Executive Vice President of Collette, tells Travelweek that the company is seeing a mix of travellers booking both domestic and international destinations for the fall and early into next year, to destinations within the European Union such as Iceland, Greece and France. To make clients feel at ease when booking, Collette has mandated vaccinations for international travel and is offering a cancel for any reason protection policy until the day prior to departure. The one destination he would recommend right now would be Iceland, 6 | TRAVELWEEK | September 23, 2021

the “land of fire and ice.” Collette’s ‘Iceland’s Magical Northern Lights,’ now available for booking from October to December 2021, travels the ‘Golden Circle’ and includes a starlit cruise, visits to Thingvellir National Park, Gullfoss

G ADVENTURES Noting that many travellers are opting to book for early 2022, David Green, VP of Commercial at G Adven-
tures says that the tide has shifted somewhat in recent weeks, with lead times reducing as more Canadians look to get away before the end of the year. He recommends Costa Rica for its “wealth of activities, biodiversity and landscapes,” not to mention its warm temperatures in October and November. But for those wanting to venture a little further, Portugal and Spain both have high vaccination rates and are being open to travellers, “which is great for an autumn break,” he says. G Adventures has the 16-day ‘Costa Rica Adventure - Plus’, which visits San Jose, Tortuguero, La Fortuna, Sarapiqui, Quepos and Puerto Viejo del Talamanca and is priced from $2,249 per person, excluding flights, in November. In Europe, there’s the seven-day ‘Highlights of Portugal’, priced from $1,429 per person, excluding flights, in October and visiting Lisbon, Coimbra, Batalha and Porto, and the six-day ‘Hiking Madeira’, priced from $1,299 per person, excluding flights, in November. GLOBUS Generally speaking, Canadians are taking a more cautious approach to travel bookings for 2021, says Stéphanie Bishop, managing director, Global family of brands, adding that the company is seeing “record-breaking bookings for 2022 and 2023.” At pres-
TOP NEWS ent, Globus family of brands considers a ‘last-minute’ booking as one made about two months from departure. For these clients, Bishop recommends Ireland, a destination that she is personally looking forward to revisiting. “Like Canada, Ireland is enjoying high vaccination rates, and with no quarantine or testing requirements for fully vaccinated travellers – not to mention the return of direct flights from Toronto to Dublin – it’s extremely accessible,” she says. Globus is offering off-season Escapes to Ireland, including the seven-day ‘Irish Escape,’ priced from $1,319 with several departures available from October through December 2021. GOWAY Moira Smith, VP Asia and Africa at Goway, tells Travelweek that the company is seeing travellers book both last minute and further out. Noting that last-minute bookers are heading to destinations that offer good airlift and health and safety protocols, she says that Goway’s top three most popular destinations right now are for island locales. But if she had to choose just one destination for a last-minute getaway, Smith says Maldives – with a stop in Dubai either en route or on return – is a good bet. “High-end private luxury is the main allure right now. And with every resort in Maldives located on its own island, offering spacious accommodations,

high-end inclusions and space, it’s the perfect antidote to the year we’ve all had,” says Smith. She adds that with a nearly 80% vaccination rate, Dubai is the perfect addon to a Maldives getaway. Plus, with Expo 2020 Dubai taking place from Oct. 1, 2021 and March 31, 2022 and featuring over 200 participating pavilions, (it was originally scheduled for 2020 and was postponed due to the pandemic), now is a good time to visit. Goway has the 12-day ‘Dubai Expo & Maldives with Airfare’ package on sale until Sept. 30, 2021, priced from $5,540 (savings of $430). INTREPID TRAVEL Despite the Delta variant and uneven vaccine rollouts, “travel is coming back,” albeit at differing rates around the world, says Matt Berna, Managing Director of North America for Intrepid Travel. “Domestic travel is driving the recovery in many destinations as travel alerts and restrictions continue to change for international travel, causing uncertainty,” he adds. “Based on the travel restrictions and recommendations from the Canadian government, our Canadian domestic tours would be a great option for travellers, especially those looking to travel more last-minute.” Berna suggests Intrepid’s five-day ‘Sunshine Coast Walking Winter Adventure,’ which takes travellers along Canada’s lesser-known Sunshine Coast, a stretch of land that hugs the Georgia
Strait. In between exploring quaint seaside communities, travellers will ferry across the Strait on a number of scenic rides, hike the coast and Willingdon Beach trails, and ride the Skookumchuk Tidal Rapids. Prices start at $1,805 per person. TRAFALGAR Up until two weeks ago, Trafalgar was seeing clients eagerly booking 2021 vacations. However, in the week leading up to Labour Day weekend, “we started seeing some bookings switch to late 2021 and 2022,” says Wolf Paunic, President of Trafalgar, Costsaver and Brendan Vacations Canada, all part of The Travel Corporation umbrella.
Globus is offering offseason escapes to Ireland, including the 7-day ‘Irish Escape,’ priced from $1,319 with departures available October - December 2021. Paunic is quick to add that Trafalgar is currently operating in some of its most popular destinations, including Italy, Spain, Portugal, Croatia and Slovenia, “so there are choices in terms of destinations for last-minute bookings.” His first choice for a last-minute getaway during these times is Trafalgar’s 11-day ‘Best of Croatia and Slovenia’, next departing on Sept. 17 and including a scenic boat ride on Lake Bled, a ‘Be My Guest’ experience on a Slovenian farm, a visit to Plitvice and a sunset cruise up the Dalmatian Coast. Noting how he himself spent time on Croatia’s coast in early July and “enjoyed a fantastic experience,” Paunic praised both Croatia and Slovenia for their health and wellbeing practices, which are compliant with WTTC’s Safe Travel guidelines and are ensured by Trafalgar’s Wellbeing Directors. “Guided travel is the way to go given the current circumstances, as one can leave the possible confusion induced by different rules and regulations to Trafalgar and fully commit to enjoying travel experiences delivered by our Travel Directors, Local Specialists and friendly hosts,” said Paunic. If a guest isn’t happy by the second day of their cruise, Riviera will assist in bringing them home with a full refund.
Avianca has opened ticket sales for its new Toronto - Bogota route, with flights starting in December 2021. Avianca will start with three weekly frequencies on the route, on A320s with capacity for 150 passengers. That’s about 4,000 weekly seats. Flight AV205 departs Toronto at 10:50 p.m., arriving in Bogota at 5 a.m. On the return leg, flight AV204 departs Bogota at 3:20 p.m., arriving in Toronto at 9:30 p.m. Flights operate Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The U.S. Justice Department and officials in six states have filed a lawsuit to block a partnership formed by American Airlines and JetBlue, claiming that it will reduce competition and lead to higher fares. The Justice Department says the agreement will eliminate important competition in Boston and New York and reduce JetBlue's incentive to compete against American in other parts of the country. “In an industry where just four airlines control more than 80% of domestic air travel, American Airlines’ ‘alliance’ with JetBlue is, in fact, an unprecedented maneuver to further consolidate the industry,” said Attorney General Merrick Garland. “It would result in higher fares, fewer choices, and lower quality service if allowed to continue.”
Carnival Glory
With 11 ships now in operation, half of Carnival Cruise Line’s U.S. fleet is sailing again following the cruise industry’s lengthy pause due to the pandemic. Beginning with its return to guest operations on July 3 with Carnival Vista, and most recently with the resumption of Carnival Dream and Carnival Glory on Sept. 19, Carnival is operating from seven U.S. homeports including Miami, Galveston, Seattle, Port Canaveral, Long Beach, Baltimore and New Orleans. “We couldn’t have accomplished this without the support of our travel advisor partners, business partners and port and destinations partners,” said Carnival’s President, Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. Additional vessels will resume service throughout the fall and into early 2022 as the line’s restart of operations continues. Princess Cruises is extending its pause in Australia/New Zealand to Jan. 27, 2022, citing uncertainties around the return of cruising in the region. As a result of the extension, Coral Princess voyages through Jan. 17 have been cancelled, as well as Royal Princess and Sapphire Princess seasons through to March 2022. “It became apparent we would not be able to deliver planned deployment of Royal Princess and Sapphire Princess in Australia before they were due to start their published northern hemisphere voyages,” said Deanna Austin, Princess Cruises Chief Commercial Officer. 8 | TRAVELWEEK | September 23, 2021
HOTELS Radisson Hotel Group is marking major hotel expansion in Africa for 2021. With 13 signings so far, Radisson Hotel Group has signed a new hotel every 20 days year-to-date. Radisson’s expansion includes the announcement of nine hotels in Morocco, the Group’s debut in Djibouti and the introduction of the Radisson Individuals brand in Africa. Radisson has also opened Africa’s second Radisson RED in South Africa and four Radisson Blu resort offerings in Morocco. With additional hotel signings and a further three openings in Africa expected before year end, Radisson says it remains “prudently optimistic” regarding the business recovery within the last quarter of 2021. The company adds that its aggressive expansion puts it on track to boost the current African portfolio of almost 100 hotels currently in operation and under development to its ambition of 150 hotels by 2025.

Mixed vaccine doses OK according to England’s new travel policy
U.S. plans to ease travel restrictions for fully vaccinated int’l travellers WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. says it plans to ease travel restrictions for fully vaccinated foreign nationals starting in November. All international travellers flying to the U.S. will need to demonstrate proof of vaccination before boarding, as well as proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within three days of flight. Fully vaccinated passengers will not be required to quarantine. The U.S. will also require airlines to collect contact information from international travellers to facilitate contact tracing. The U.S. side of the Canada-U.S. land border has been closed since March 2020. Canada reopened its side to fully vaccinated American travellers on Aug. 9. Canada then reopened to all fully vaccinated international travellers on Sept. 7. Canada’s advisory against all non-essential travel is still in place. The U.S. has also again extended its land border closure with Canada until Oct. 21. If the U.S. reopens its land border with Canada this November, as part of its eased restrictions, the big question for many Canadians looking to travel to the U.S. in the coming months will be whether or not the U.S. will update its
stance to accept the AstraZeneca vaccine, as well as mixed doses. Close to 2 million Canadians received the AstraZeneca vaccine, and almost 4 million Canadians have mixed dose vaccinations. Both IATA and the WTTC expressed support for the Biden administration’s decision to begin reopening the U.S. to fully vaccinated travellers. The announcement “is a major step forward,” says IATA’s Director General, Willie Walsh. “Allowing access to the U.S. for those vaccinated will open travel to the U.S. for many who have been locked out for the past 18 months. This is excellent news for families and loved ones who have suffered through the heartache and loneliness of separation. It’s good for the millions of livelihoods in the US that depend on global tourism. And it will boost the economic recovery by enabling some key business travel markets.” And Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, said: “The U.S. lifting travel restrictions to restore transatlantic travel between the EU and the UK is welcome news - not only for hard-pressed airlines, but for the wider travel and tourism sector, which has been decimated by COVID-19. Simpson added that the WTTC “strongly advocates for fully vaccinated citizens to be able to travel freely and safely, irrespective of where they’re travelling from.”
TORONTO — The UK’s decision to ditch its traffic light system of COVID-19 travel policies in favour of more streamlined protocols includes good news for Canadians with mixed vaccine doses. While so far only relevant for travel to / from England, the new policies taking effect Oct. 4, 2021 include a thumbs-up for travellers fully vaccinated (at least 14 days prior to departure) with a full course of Oxford/AstraZeneca, Pfizer BioNTech, Moderna or Janssen vaccines, from a relevant public health body in a long list of countries, including Canada. “Mixing between two-dose vaccines (Oxford/AstraZeneca, Pfizer BioNTech, Moderna) in this list is also recognized,” according to the new policy. Existing approval for fully vaccinated travellers under an approved vaccination program in the UK, Europe and the U.S. is also in place. UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced the simplified system for international travel last Friday. Starting Oct. 4, 2021 the current Traffic Light System of red, amber, green will be replaced by a new two-tiered system - a single ‘red list’ of countries and territories and a ‘rest of the world’ list. Plus, testing requirements are being reduced for eligible fully vaccinated travellers from non-red list countries, who will no longer need to take a Pre Departure Test when travelling to England. For now international arrivals into England must still book and pay for a day 2 COVID test, to be taken after arrival in England; complete their passenger locator form any time in the 48 hours before arriving in England; and take a COVID-19 test on or before day 2 after arriving in England. However starting at the end of October 2021, eligible fully vaccinated passengers (and those with an approved vaccine from a select group of non-red countries) will be able to replace their day 2 test with a cheaper lateral flow test, reducing the cost of tests on arrival into England. Also starting in late October, changes are being made to allow passengers who change flights or international September 23, 2021 | TRAVELWEEK | 9
NEWS trains during their journey to follow the measures associated to their country of departure, rather than any countries they have transited through as part of their journey. Says VisitBritain Deputy Chief Executive Patricia Yates: “The announcements from the UK Government on overhauling the traffic light system, easing pre-arrival testing for fully vaccinated travellers from 4 October and the move to lateral flow tests on day 2 by the end of October are welcome steps to further reopening international travel and to boosting consumer confidence in visiting Britain.” Yates added that “simplifying the testing regime has been a clear ask from the international travel industry. Tourism is a competitive global industry and we have already forecast a slow recovery with overseas visitor spending in the UK this year of £5.3 billion compared to £28.4 billion in 2019. Being able to welcome more visitors by safely reducing barriers to travel is critical to building back demand and visitor spending.”
Cuba eases entry requirements Nov. 15, here’s what ACV, Transat and Sunwing have to say TORONTO — Cuba is easing entry requirements for travellers coming into the country effective Nov. 15, 2021. In the meantime tour operators have already been ramping up their Cuba programs for winter 2021-22. An update from the Cuba Tourist Board says Cuba is making the move “in preparation for the winter season and taking into consideration that by November, 92.5 % of the population will be vaccinated.” NO COVID TEST PRIOR TO ENTERING CUBA All of Cuba’s tourist destinations will reopen by Nov. 15, plus the Ministry of Tourism of Cuba has announced more relaxed entry protocols effective the same date. The new rules focus on the surveillance of symptomatic patients, temperature screening and diagnostic test performed at random. 10 | TRAVELWEEK | September 23, 2021
“This means: NO Covid test prior entering Cuba and NO PCR upon arrival at the Cuban airport (which in the past was completed to 100 % of the passengers),” says the update from the Cuba Tourist Board. The new protocols also mean that Canadian incoming travellers must show that they are fully vaccinated or, if they are not vaccinated, they must submit a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours before entering Cuba. The PCR test Canadians need to re-enter back in Canada is done at the hotels and it costs US$30 (payable locally by Visa or debit/Visa). The Cuban tourism authorities have also announced the opening of the local tourism market and the cancelling of the quarantine for passengers staying in private rental homes (i.e. B&Bs). Locals can also stay at tourist facilities shared by international visitors. Lessner Gomez, Director of the Cuba Tourist Board in Toronto praised Cuba’s vaccination rollout. The country has done an incredible job vaccinating its people including children as young as two years old, says Gomez. “We are the first country in the world to administer COVID-19 vaccines to toddlers,” said Gomez. “The vaccination program in Cuba, the strengthening of the health and safety protocols in all tourists’ facilities and the high vaccination rate in Canada” have made the Nov. 15 eased restrictions possible, he adds. “The fact that Cuba is relaxing the rules and that the tourists will be allowed to travel around and enjoy our beautiful country is very exciting and very good news at the time when Cana-
dians are looking forward to returning to normal and are planning their winter travels,” said Gomez. WHAT TOUR OPERATORS ARE SAYING ACV Vice-President Nino Montagnese says ACV already has capacity scheduled to ramp up in November. “This is very good news for our customers,” Montagnese told Travelweek in the wake of Cuba’s announcement. “We will have flying not only from Montreal and Toronto but also Halifax and Ottawa with added capacity and destinations from all,” he added. From Toronto, ACV is offering Cayo Coco (starts Nov. 2), Cayo Santa Maria (Santa Clara) (Nov. 4), Havana (Dec. 19), Holguin (Nov. 1) and Varadero (Nov. 1). From Ottawa, flights to Varadero start Dec. 27, and from Halifax, Cayo Coco starts Dec. 24. From Montreal, ACV will offer Cayo Coco (starts Nov. 6), Cayo Santa Maria (Santa Clara) (Nov. 2), Holguin (Nov. 4) and Varadero (Nov. 3). At Transat, Cuba flights at the peak of the winter season will operate from Montreal (Cayo Coco, Holguin and Santa Clara 2x weekly, Varadero 4x weekly); Quebec City (Holguin and Varadero, 1x weekly) and Toronto (Cayo Coco and Santa Clara 2x weekly, Holguin 3x weekly and Varadero 4x weekly), says spokesperson Debbie Cabana. Sunwing will offer weekly flights to Varadero and Cayo Coco starting in October and November from several gateways across Canada including Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Edmonton. G Adventures adds Christmas market trips to its Vaccinated Tours program TORONTO — G Adventures has launched its first Christmas market trips in Europe as part of its new Vaccinated Tours program. As announced last month, all travellers, and the group’s chief experience officer (or CEO), must be fully vaccinated at least 14-days before departure in order to take part in a Vaccinated Tours trip. The Christmas in Central Europe itineraries feature Christmas markets in Germany and Austria and were built as a result of the increased interest Canadians are showing for travel to Europe, when compared to pre-pandemic booking levels, according to the company. The new itinerary visits some of Central Europe’s most famous markets, including Hellbrunner Christmas Market in Salzburg, known for its 700+ decorated Christmas trees, and Germany’s Nuremberg market, one of the oldest markets in the world. “The 2020 Christmas season was tough for many, with COVID-19 restrictions meaning a lot of families and friends weren’t able to spend the holiday season together. We’re excited to launch these new festive tours, and help travellers recapture the magic of Christmas,” says David Green, Managing Director of Canada, G Adventures. Green added: “We’re also seeing a significant increase in interest, and bookings, for tours in Europe with double the number of Canadians booking this past August compared to August 2019, so it seems a fitting time to appeal to travellers who are looking to travel to both Europe and recapture some Christmas magic this year.” Four departures run from late-November to the end of December. The week-long tours take travellers from Berlin to Vienna, from $1,999 per person. The trip can also be taken in reverse with the Christmas in Central Europe - Vienna to Berlin tour priced from $2,149 per person. September 23, 2021 | TRAVELWEEK | 17
