SOUTHERN CHARM

Discovering the unforgettable landscapes of southern Australia

ith bragging rights as the oldest inhabited continent, Australia offers a diverse landscape, from the extremes of desert to the jaw-dropping beauty of its coastlines. For clients interested in road tripping, cuisine, wildlife and outback adventures (paired with a healthy pour of local wine), the states of Victoria and South Australia are ready to step into the spotlight with new attractions, luxury accommodation and natural history found nowhere else on the planet.

The Garden State – Victoria

Known as Narrm by the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Bunurong Boon Wurrung peoples, and the second largest city in the country, Melbourne has many passions: sports, culture, cuisine, but especially coffee, with the highest con-

centration of coffee shops in Australia. The first rule of Melbourne is learn how to order a coffee.

At SQ1 Rialto, the sleek flagship cafe of Square One Coffee Roasters, the order heard repeatedly is “a flat white, please.” This no-foam, coffee-and-milk combo boosts the excitement of my small group as we begin our first adventure: embarking on the storied Great Ocean Road. The most popular attraction of the state, this 240-kilometre highway was built over 13 years, constructed by approximately 3,000 veterans as a memorial to fellow servicemen who died during World War I.

Six million annual visitors include this quintessential road trip on their itinerary, traversing the endless twists and turns on the edge of the sea, featuring eye-catching viewpoints and friendly hamlets from Torquay to Port Fairy. Stunning views along the Surf Coast of the Southern Ocean can be found at Bells Beach, host of the world’s longest-running surfing competition, the Rip Curl Pro. This epicentre of Australia’s surfing community had its Hollywood moment as a location for the 1991 action/thriller ‘Point Break’ starring Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves.

Apollo Bay is home for the night after a first day of driving. Here, we stretch our legs during a twilight walking tour at the recently-opened Wildlife Wonders, a bushland sanctuary offering guided tours of the 1.4-kilometre trail, accessible for all to learn about endangered species. The Dusk Discovery Wildlife Tour leads us into the hushed atmosphere of the eucalyptus and tree fern forest, where a couple of emu saunter past with the recalcitrant expression of a bored teenager. A busy bandicoot is burrowing nearby as we descend the wood boardwalk beneath the canopy, and we also spot the furry gray bottoms of koalas happily sleeping in the treetops.

Crossing into open fields, we stop as a wary wallaby crosses our path, unsure of what to make of us as it quickly heads into the tall grass. Towards the end of the trail, a kangaroo duo glances our way before hopping downhill.

Adelaide
Flinders Ranges

The next day the skies are cloudless and bright blue as the road meanders into the forest before heading back out along the sea. As we near the culmination of the Great Ocean Road, it’s time to get the bird’s eye view. Checking in at 12 Apostles Helicopters is an efficient process before being led to a four-seater helicopter, where our smiling pilot ensures everyone is safely strapped before takeoff.

Ascending across verdant farm fields, my camera is working double-time as we approach the shoreline. We’re now soaring above the Twelve Apostles, 45-metre-tall limestone stacks located close to the shore in the Twelve Apostles Marine National Park. Despite its biblical reference (they’re named after the 12 Apostles of Jesus), there were ever only nine stacks, with eight now remaining and still considered one of the world’s most astonishing natural wonders.

The pilot encourages us to look for whales or dolphins as we hit the halfway point of our aerial tour at London Bridge, a natural bridge created by erosion in 1990. Another pass along the breathtaking coastline and we’re back to the helipad, the joy of our tour not soon forgotten.

The 10-minute walk to the park viewpoint ends in a crowded area where apostle selfies are steadily being uploaded. But there are more options to experience the Twelve Apostles; hikers can walk from Princetown, meandering the seven-kilometre path of boardwalk, crushed gravel, steps and rubber tiles for sea views and wildlife spotting. For those wanting a multi-day challenge, Australian Walking Company’s three-day Great Ocean Road Long Weekend itinerary includes daily walks, eco-accommodation and tasty meals, while Auswalk Walking Holidays’ 104-kilometre Great Ocean Walk can be guided, self-guided or customized.

The Festival State – South Australia

Home to the popular Adelaide Fringe Festival, second only to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Adelaide is the state capital of South Australia, adjacent to the Barossa Valley wine region and the nature haven of Kangaroo Island.

A private charter from Adelaide is the fastest way to traverse into the South Australian outback. Platinum Aircraft Charters takes us 600 kilometres north into the heart of the Flinders Ranges, the state’s largest mountain region with unparalleled topography of cliffs, craters and valleys.

From the plane window seat, I spy the highway meandering through rolling hills, as the earth changes from brown to red, confirmation that we’re officially in the outback.

Our guide, Macca, a skilled outdoorsman from the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary who’s sporting a hat worthy of Mick Dundee, drives us from the airstrip through the wild surroundings. He quickly stops as a creature crosses the road, pointing out the rare sight of an echidna, also known as a spiny anteater. This is followed by another outback rite of passage – a flat tire. Thanks to a fellow employee, we swap vehicles to proceed to the village and check in at the three-lodge sanctuary.

Happy hour comes with a show, as we follow fellow lodgers to a rock pile to witness a notable and endangered resident: the yellow-footed rock wallaby. As the sun dips below the horizon, younger males appear, pushing and shoving each other to reach well-placed treats between crevices. They’re followed by more cautious females and, to all our delight, a baby peeking out from mum’s pouch.

Great Ocean Road
Twelve Apostles

Our post-dinner amenity is an astronomy 101 session at Ningana Imaging Observatory, beginning with a primer on the southern skies with our instructor using a laser pointer to pick out the Southern Cross, the False Cross and other stars. But there’s an unfortunate foe in our perusal of the heavens – a full moon, its light so bright, we’re casting shadows on the ground.

Part two of astronomy class is inside, a four-screen digital astro experience. The observatory is doing the hard work, revealing the secrets of the cosmos and galaxies far, far away as we comfortably sit and gaze at live images from deep space. I slowly stroll to my lodge room, my eyes on the evening skies and my mind happily filled with astro terminology.

There are several hiking trails to explore in the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary territory, from an hour to a day-long trek. Many visitors are road tripping the Ranges to experience the vast outback expanse. My small group piles into an open-air fourwheel drive for the Ridgetop Sleepout Tour.

Two and a half hours bumping along the winding roads into the sanctuary’s heart, our man Macca explains how this land was mined for its uranium deposits. But the dusty layers also revealed one of the country’s most impressive discoveries by geologist Reg Sprigg in 1946: the world’s oldest Ediacarian fossil animals dating back to approximately 635 million years ago.

Arriving at the overnight campsite at Streitberg Ridge, I’m struck by the silence – even wildlife is lulled into calm, and

Macca reassures us we won’t see snakes because of cooling temperatures. We each have a swag, a low canvas tent bed on an elevated wood platform. The loo comes with a view of the mountains, while the heart of the site is a couple of camp tables and folding chairs, where we gather as Chef Macca serves happy hour canapes before grilling steaks and fish for dinner. After swapping stories around the campfire and looking through the telescope, each of us falls asleep in the country’s second certified dark sky sanctuary.

We take another bumpy ride back to the airstrip, where our charter flight takes off south to Parachilna, population: 5. Another must-stop in the Flinders Ranges, The Prairie Hotel in Parachilna is a stylish accommodation on the western edge, well-known for its “feral” cuisine and consummate hospitality. A welcome lunch includes Salt Bush dukkah, an appetizer of fresh bread, olive oil, bush tomatoes and a locally-made spice mix, and the Feral antipasto platter, a shareable charcuterie board with camel, wild pig, emu and kangaroo delicacies with cheese, veg and salad.

Opened in April 2023, the nearby Nilpena Ediacara National Park is 60,000 square hectares of a former sheep station containing many ancient secrets, now accessed through guided tours. Thirty years of research have revealed a living chronicle of the dawn of animal life. Colloquially named Alice’s Restaurant Bed, the fossil bed reveals multicellular animal life that lived on earth 560 to 542 million years ago. This active research site and the natural wealth of the Flinders Ranges is currently under consideration to become Australia’s next UNESCO World Heritage site.

As a country able to lure visitors with a lengthy list of well-known attractions, Australia continues to add even more ways for travel advisors to tempt clients to plan a trip Down Under, particularly in the fascinating regions of Victoria and South Australia.
