HX Expeditions, the world’s largest expedition cruise company, announced the launch of flight-inclusive Greenland itineraries with nonstop flights from Newark to Nuuk, just a four-hour journey. Commencing on June 21, 2025 (Greenland National Day), and marked by the summer solstice, HX’s hybrid-powered voyages feature itineraries developed in collaboration with local Greenlandic communities, ensuring guests enjoy an authentic travel experience as they sail the country’s west coast aboard the MS Fridtjof Nansen.
HX Expeditions, with over 20 years of experience in Greenland, offers unmatched expertise with a legacy of Arctic exploration that dates back to 1896. The company also provides exclusive locally designed itineraries crafted and managed by Greenlanders, built in collaboration with local communities and featuring cultural ambassadors on every sailing.
Sustainability leadership is crucial in this fragile part of the world, and the hybrid battery-powered MS Fridtjof Nansen is recognized as one of the world’s safest and most sustainable cruise ships, prioritizing emissions and waste reductions.
New itineraries from Newark include the 12-day Icy Giants of Disko Bay, the 16-day Mythical Lands of the North expedition, the 20-day Farthest North to Thule and Kane Basin, which ventures farther north than HX Expeditions has ever gone, and the 26-day Northwest Passage Through the Arctic Labyrinth, a truly exclusive travel experience.

Quark is offering a series of 11-day itineraries sailing from Ushuaia at the tip of Argentina, crossing the renowned Drake Channel and exploring the amazing seventh continent. Guests who prefer to fly across the Drake and shorten their time away can choose the Antarctic Express, board a flight from Punta Arenas, Chile, and land at King George Island before exploring the Antarctic Peninsula by ship. Quark Expeditions provides an official parka to keep and loaner boots, not to mention the exceptional services and knowledge of an Expedition Team to ensure guests get the most out of their spectacular cruise. The fare includes all meals, snacks, soft drinks, free beer, standard wines, spirits and cocktails during bar service hours and dinner. Complimentary Wi-Fi service on one device is also included.

Two new ships will soon join the Tauck fleet, both destined to sail the rivers of France in 2026. The yet-to-be-named new vessels will include one 135-metre ship that will accommodate 130 guests in exclusive, luxurious suites, sailing Tauck’s itineraries on the Rhône River. Suites will range in size from 300 square feet to 225 square feet to 180 square feet on the Diamond, Ruby and Emerald decks, respectively. A slightly smaller sister ship, measuring 125 metres and hosting 124 guests will sail the River Seine, offering elegant accommodations that include 300 square-foot suites on the Diamond deck, 225 square-foot suites mainly on the Ruby deck and twelve 180 square-foot suites on her Emerald deck.
At 180 square feet, the Category 1 staterooms on both newbuilds will be 20% larger than those found on Tauck’s other riverboats. In keeping with Tauck’s tradition of welcoming solo travelers, all Category 1 staterooms on the new ships will have the single supplement waived on every sailing.

Combining several sailings into a single itinerary will allow more immersive experiences and extra time to explore charming villages, beautiful landscapes and historic cities. For those keen to explore cities such as Paris, Monaco, Zurich and Amsterdam, optional multi-day pre- and post-land extensions are also available.

Fleet-wide enhancements include Horizon Bar & Lounge redesigns with bright accent colours and luxurious textiles. Pool/cinema and dining spaces will be enhanced and revamped to bring a refined, modern ambiance to each ship. Each stateroom will feature iPads to enhance guest interaction with onboard amenities, providing an easy digital resource for guests. All upgrades have been completed for the 2025 season.

Sun Princess, Princess Cruises’ 16th ship, is heralding the line’s new Sphere Class
By Diane Tierney
PRINCESS CRUISES' SUN PRINCESS , the line’s sweet 16th ship, heralds a new class for the fleet – the upscale and elegant Sphere Class with its striking new exterior design and more stylish interiors for 4,300 guests.
The ship’s extravagant and enormous glass dome on the top deck looks like a glistening diamond crown. Midship, it looks as if the ship has swallowed a giant crystal golf ball, with curves reaching out for sea and sky views. These two brilliant architectural features bring a lot of natural sunlight inside.
The ship marks many other firsts for the line besides its modern royal look. It boasts its first ‘ship within a ship,’ a private-access enclave called the Sanctuary Collection for those who like a VIP experience. While Princess knows that it’s late to the party with this concept, it has learned from others and customized the area for discerning guests.
While there are 2,157 staterooms in total on board, the Sanctuary has three categories of special staterooms such as 80 full suites, 123 minisuites and 12 balcony suites. These three options allow for savings within families or groups who can choose the suite that suits them. Children 16-plus are also permitted. Although there is no designated butler service, the crew here have had certified butler training.
The Sanctuary also has its own dining room, pool, hot tub, private cabanas, luxurious twostorey lounge and two bars. Additional perks include the Princess Premier package for premium drinks, unlimited specialty dining, the highestperforming Wi-Fi, reserved theatre seating and more.
Sun Princess appeals to guests with five pools –including a stunning infinity-style pool at the aft and an indoor/outdoor pool under the spectacular dome –plus nine hot tubs.
The signature Piazza atrium is the heart of many Princess ships and for Sun Princess, additional seating now accommodates about 300 guests who can enjoy watching live music, dancing, performances and other activities.
A two-storey spa, a thermal suite, salon and gym are also available and the top deck has a netted sports court and running track. Plus, Princess went ‘all in’ with a casino that’s the largest of the fleet. Retail space has been expanded and features more than 200 premium brands.
Childcare centres offer activities tailored for toddlers, tweens and teens. For those with children ages six months to two years, there’s play space for parent supervision.
Designed to be a foodie destination at sea, Sun Princess has 29 restaurants and bars to tantalize all taste preferences. While beloved favourites such as the 116-seat Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria and 132-seat Crown Grill remain, the ship introduces an exciting array of new dining experiences, highlighted by celebrity collaborations.
Love by Britto, a boutique restaurant featuring the vibrant works and tableware of renowned Brazilian artist Romero Britto, has a whimsical seven-course meal presented with heart-shaped food design for 68 guests.
Sushi master Chef Makoto Okuwa brings his creations to Makoto Ocean, where traditional sushi is redefined for 70 guests.
World-renowned butcher Dario Cecchini presents Butcher’s Block by Dario, an 88-seat family-style restaurant featuring the finest cuts of beef.
Spellbound by Magic Castle offers a fun, immersive dining experience with a magician/comedian, spooky spaces and Instagram-worthy cocktails.
The Catch by Rudi, another culinary gem that’s on four Princess ships, features seafood specialties with international influences curated by Chef Rudi Sodamin. The venue accommodates 88 diners.
Guests can also indulge at the Love Line Premium Liquors Collection, a collaboration with celebrities like Matthew McConaughey and his Pantalones organic tequila and Blake Lively and her new Betty Booze and Betty Buzz (non-alcoholic) sparkling beverages. Renowned mixologist Rob Floyd delights guests with his globally-inspired cocktails.
Model Tyra Banks has her unique Smize ice cream on board. Chef Darren McGrady’s delightful High Tea presentation (he’s served both Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Diana) add to the onboard culinary tapestry.
Eager to appeal to younger generations including those 35-plus, Princess has curated more engaging, latenight entertainment. There are three new large-scale production shows at the 980-seat Arena theatre with four lead vocalists and 13 talented dancers. Smaller shows featuring eight extraordinary acrobats perform at the Piazza and in the 250-seat dome (the indoor part of the indoor/outdoor pool can be covered with a stage).
The vibrant entertainment is complemented by sailaway parties, interactive game shows and silent discos (great for people-watching even if not participating). Throughout the ship there are bars and lounges featuring high-quality live entertainment and DJs. On the top deck, an outdoor giant TV screen is ideal to watch movies and sporting events.
While many loyal, repeat Princess guests may feel a bit lost on new Sun Princess because some traditional venues are in different places than its fleet mates, others say it was time for a change and that the ship both ‘surprises and delights’ in many wonderful ways.
Star Princess, a twin to the Sun Princess, will debut in fall 2025.
Virgin
Voyages is
appealing to the next generation of cruisers, with a laidback yet classy vibe on board
By Ming Tappin
From the moment I entered the cruise terminal, I knew my time onboard Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady would be different, but fun. I was greeted by enthusiastic crew clad in red, welcoming me to my “MerMaiden” voyage with the iconic brand. Wearing hot pants and plunging tops – and I don’t mean just the ladies – the congenial team certainly did a great job of elevating my anticipation.
From its launch in 2021, Virgin Voyages has been writing its own cruise rule book. That’s because the man behind the brand – Richard Branson – isn’t exactly your typical entrepreneur. Born out of the desire to convince himself to cruise, Branson’s goal in designing Virgin Voyages was to reinvent the standard cruising concepts. Throw what you know about big-ship cruising out the window and enter a world at sea without children (you must be 18+ to sail) – and no buffets.
My first impression was that Scarlet Lady – Virgin’s first “ladyship” – was designed with millennials in mind. As I wandered through the halls, I came across plenty of photo ops for selfies and group shots, and strong (and complimentary) Wi-Fi ensured there weren’t any glitches in sharing those social media-worthy moments. Music was my constant companion, whether it was the DJ pumping tunes by the pool, the disk spinning on
the turntable in the Voyage Vinyl record shop, or the collection of mood music on my stateroom iPad - after all, music is part of Virgin’s DNA. In my Sea Terrace stateroom, I discovered that my bed could be made into a sofa by day, which was great for reading and relaxing. But my red hammock beckoned from the terrace, and five pages into my book, I was adrift in reverie, buoyed by the gentle swing and fresh sea breeze.
I also appreciated not having to pack dinner clothes, as dinner was a wear-what-you-want affair, even flipflops and shorts were welcomed. The dining experience, however, was 100% upscale. With over 20 complimentary eateries, my choices included a traditional steakhouse, an Italian and a Mexican restaurant, all at no extra charge. I loved the vegan-forward Razzle Dazzle, with dishes such as mushroom tartare, nutty gazpacho and roasted heirloom cauliflower. And at Gunbae – the first Korean barbeque at sea – we grilled delicious seafood and meats. But my favourite was the Test Kitchen, where a simple menu of mushroom, scallop, egg, venison, cheese and chocolate was amped up and served in the most creative way. Scarlet Lady was also the first to introduce an upscale food court concept at sea where I could order from a menu of hot entrées, salads and various ethnic dishes and have them delivered to my
table. I also loved that soft drinks and sparkling water were included, as were gratuities to the crew.
When it was time to work off dinner, I checked into Vitamin Sea, Scarlet Lady’s wellness complex. Spanning over three decks with massive workout spaces including outdoor circuit stations and a boxing ring, it was the most extensive fitness centre I have ever seen. Best of all, the comprehensive roster of fitness classes included yoga, Pilates, bungee fitness, meditation, barre, high-intensity interval training, spin and more, all at no extra charge.
Another departure from standard cruises was Scarlet Lady’s evening entertainment. I was delighted to find a collection of high-octane performances and multi-media stories told through modern dance and death-defying acrobatics. Even the theatre was innovative. It had a moving stage that could be set up in different configurations, and at times we actually stood to watch a performance. Other evening events included a PJ party, adult comedy and Virgin’s signature Scarlet Night, where sailors are encouraged to dress head-to-toe or in “a splash of” red. Pop-up performances, a pool party and other surprises were all in-store during this not-to-miss evening. Being 18+, the entertainment onboard was a little risqué at times, with a few naughty innuendos.
A Caribbean voyage wouldn’t be complete without a stop at Virgin’s private beach in The Bahamas. A short tram ride from the pier brought me to the Beach Club at Bimini. A large free-form pool with a swim-up bar, hammocks in the sand, private cabanas and a gorgeous sandy beach provided a day of respite in the sun. Lunch at the Beach Club was a pleasant surprise too - no burgers or fries here! We noshed on watermelon jicama salad, banana leaf steamed red snapper and Indian curries, all refreshingly creative and delicious.
With other industry firsts such as Squid Ink (the first tattoo parlor at sea) and Dry Dock blowout bar, it is clear that Virgin is aimed at the next generation of cruisers who are looking for something that is hip and off-beat. But let it be known that Virgin isn’t a party cruise. Although music and an upbeat atmosphere are prevalent elements, it is a classy experience, complemented by superb dining and service.
Scarlet Lady has two sisters – Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady – and together they take sailors to the Caribbean and Europe. The final ladyship - Brilliant Lady – will debut in September 2025. From New York City, she will sail a series of Bermuda cruises before heading down to the Caribbean to spend the winter sailing from seven to 12-night itineraries.

WHERE ARE THE WORLDS HAPPIEST PEOPLE? According to a 2023 survey by Statisa, a leading German market data expert, you’ll find a lot of them in Norway. Strange, given the geography.
During the winter months in Norway, the sun rises late and sets early – very early – so natural light is in short supply. Add to that an inclement climate and you might not expect a land of joyous people. And yet, there they are.
On a recent cruise on Holland America Line, we listened to a clever speaker who explained the Norwegian phenomenon. It’s largely to do with hygge, a concept that means making the best of life by creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying life with favourite people. If one wintry night, you light a candle so your dinner table feels cozy, pull on some warm slippers and share a simple meal with friends – that’s hygge. And if you take a cruise through the stunning fjords of Norway aboard the Ms Rotterdam, enjoying the comforts of a beautiful stateroom, the companionship of your fellow cruisers, the fine dining and entertainment and a gorgeous, rugged landscape … that’s very definitely hygge.
We’ve been HAL fans for years and were thrilled to have a day at sea to start our adventure. We set sail from Rotterdam in brilliant sunshine and sailed north into the fjords, some of the deepest and longest in the world. Steep green hillsides and cliffs rose on either side of the ship and were reflected in the calm blue waters, in a take-your-breath-away landscape. Tidy, well-kept cottages in the simple Norwegian style perched on the shoreline here and there but the overall feeling was one of untouched nature and all of our shore excursions celebrated the fjords and their magnificent shoreline.
On one sunny morning in Eidfjord, we paddled out onto the water in a small fleet of bright red, green and blue kayaks. The sun was shimmering on the water as our no-nonsense guide Mike gave us detailed instructions and then assured us, “Kayaks don’t tip. People tip kayaks.”
And one young woman did, just as we were setting out. She’d ignored Mike’s instructions, stood up rather than sitting and tipped. She rose from the shallow water at the shore dripping and spluttering. Mike – neither worried nor willing to make us all wait while she returned to the ship for dry clothing – was practical. Said Mike, “You’ll dry off.”
And she did. The sun was glorious that morning – warm on our backs and glinting off our sunglasses as we paddled along the shore, listening to Mike’s stories of Inuit hunters and glacial land formations. Though we were half a world away from Newfoundland’s Western Brook Pond, the landscape was so eerily similar that we marveled at the power and scope of the ancient ice that sculpted both these beautiful places. We loved every minute – and so, ultimately, did our damp friend.
All the Norwegians we met shared that same steady practicality, a trait that serves them well in rugged, often remote places. Sometimes, they mix in a bit of whimsy as well, as we discovered in Hardangerfjord, where we did a long, lovely walk with llamas.
Llamas aren’t indigenous to Norway but when one sheep farmer decided to import a few in order to add their meat and wool to his product list, a wonderful thing happened. He discovered that llamas are personable, as happy to walk on a leash as any dog and they make ideal hiking companions for cruise ship guests. A new shore excursion was born. We signed up and were soon introduced to Google, a sweet-faced llama who
strolled happily with us around the shores of a small inlet. Soft-furred and gentle, Google was a cozy boy to pat – the epitome of hygge.
Back on board the Ms Rotterdam, we shared our impressions over meals enjoyed in favourite HAL venues. From the fine French cuisine of Rudi’s Sel De Mer (if I had one last meal on earth, I would choose a giant serving of their escargot and crusty French bread), to the rustic Italian specialities at Caneletto, the Pinnacle Grill’s warm steakhouse ambiance, and the elegant Asian-fusion creations at Tamarind, dinners aboard HAL ships are never less than fabulous. The only difficulty is planning your dining schedule so you don’t miss anything! Breakfast for us was always outdoors, after we filled our plates with fresh fruit, gorgeous baked goods and griddle treats from the friendly chefs in
the Lido Market. Days at sea were a wonderful excuse to indulge in a traditional afternoon tea or to drop by the Grand Dutch Café for stroopwaffles, bitterballen and bags of the world’s best Licorice Allsorts!
While we loved every part of our HAL cruise aboard the Ms Rotterdam, the evenings were our favourite. After we’d enjoyed the Broadway style-shows, comedians and musicians on the World Stage, we headed for the Music Walk, a Holland America exclusive. A collection of music venues, each with its own bar, the Music Walk times its performances in 45-minute increments. Sing along in Billboard Onboard, the piano bar, then move across to the Rolling Stone Lounge, where a talented group will pull you to the dance floor with their classic rock and roll. When that band pauses, move to the Motown scene at BB King’s Blues Club. It’s a night-long cycle
that kept us dancing and singing all night, every night!
This cruise offered more than the beauty of Norway’s fjords. Because we sailed on the Ms Rotterdam from her home port of Rotterdam, there were an unusually large number of Dutch guests. The ship’s announcements were therefore made in both English and Dutch, many Dutch food options were on offer throughout the ship and one memorable night, we all joined in watching the Netherland’s team play in the Euro Cup. We wore orange t-shirts in solidarity and cheered loudly for every goal scored. Though Austria won, we all raised our glasses to the Netherlands and more importantly to this very special time spent with new friends.
That night and our entire cruise aboard the Ms Rotterdam were very definitely hygge.
Yacht-style cruising featuring immersive experiences is a must-do with Atlas Ocean Voyages
By Vanessa Lee
ARELATIVE NEWCOMER TO EXPEDITION and exploration cruising, Atlas Ocean Voyages is making its mark, offering fantastic voyages with its three incredibly charming yachts.
We had previously sailed them to the Arctic in the fall of 2023, enjoying both the cruise line and the ship – World Traveller – so much that we decided to return. This time, we sailed the Med and places south, cruising from Malaga, Spain to the Canary Islands on a nine-night itinerary, visiting some delightful, lesser-visited ports.
The three expedition-style ships in the Portuguese-owned Atlas Ocean Voyages fleet are the World Navigator, the World Traveller and the World Voyager. Virtually identical, each carries just under 200 guests in a relaxed yet stylish onboard atmosphere – a luxurious all-inclusive lifestyle at sea. Their attractive itineraries and excellent pricing are just one reason for the immediate success Atlas has enjoyed since launching in 2021.
In the winter months, the three vessels sail the icy depths of Antarctica. In the warmer weather, they cruise both to the Arctic and to Europe on exploration sailings, emphasizing culinary and cultural immersion. These intimate ships are a delight, as are their staff. In fact, every aspect of sailing with this company is
a pleasure – think intimate yacht-style cruising with wonderful onboard camaraderie. There are no casinos and no big theatre for entertainment; the atmosphere is low-key, focused on destinations and the joy of exploration, and their like-minded guests mix and mingle with delight.
We arrived in Malaga a few days before the cruise departed and found it a wonderful embarkation port with a lovely old town, cozy restaurants and lively nightlife.
Our itinerary was one of the reasons we chose World Traveller again. We enjoyed stopping in Gibraltar, where guests were thrilled by their island tour, visited two ports in Morocco – Casablanca and Safi –and then spent time at sea before reaching Madeira, the Portuguese Islands of Porto Santo and Funchal. Everyone loved Madeira, which is very beautiful with fascinating mountainous terrain (and a very popular spot for Canadians). We then sailed onward to the Canary Islands, the lush tropical islands off the coast of Africa, called at Santa Cruz in La Palma and then San Sebastian on La Gomera before ending our nine-day cruise in Gran Canaria and Las Palmas.
The ship has a very appealing nautical-style décor with shades of blue, polished, gleaming wood and an airy, welcoming feel. One instantly feels at home,
and the staff members are outstanding in every way. The staterooms are well-furnished, with comfortable queen beds with sumptuous Portuguese linens, an in-room stocked minibar, 24-hour room service, a Nespresso machine and tea service, and still and sparkling water in reusable bottles. There are plush bathrobes and slippers, a roomy marble bathroom with shower and L'Occitane products, a spacious wardrobe and TV with infotainment system. We enjoyed our well-appointed, relaxing haven of calm as we watched the world go by from our balcony. Guests who choose a suite also enjoy butler service, double sinks and a tub (in the Navigator Suites).
Although Atlas offers an indulgent, inclusive lifestyle at sea with all wine, liquor and gratuities included in the fare (and some access to Wi-Fi) when on cultural expeditions, the shore excursions are extra. There was a lengthy list of choices in each port and we found them all to be of great interest, making it hard to choose. Visiting Morocco for the first time, we decided to tour the city and see the recently built Mosque – the stunning Hassan II Mosque. Our guide shared fascinating information about the city and its history, telling our group that the Berbers founded it in the seventh century BC. Thereafter, the Phoenicians and then the Romans used it as a port, and it became a French territory in the early part of the 20th century. Many guests visited Rick's Café, made famous by the movie, Casablanca, but little did they know, there was never a Rick's café – it existed only on a Hollywood movie set (but a clever entrepreneur is cashing in any way!). A second call in Morocco brought us to Safi, where a tour of the Medina (old town) was fascinating.
The Madeira Islands Archipelago, a Portuguese territory, was a great hit, leaving everyone gushing
about these two islands – Porto Santo and Funchal. Located in the North Atlantic Ocean, they offer panoramic views, delightful small villages and towns, marvelous scenery and welcoming locals. Some guests toured Funchal by Tuk-Tuk, some did a 4x4 expedition on rocky Porto Santo, while others enjoyed a wine tasting. There was something for everyone – just what you want in a destination.
Our two ports of call in the lush and dramatic Canary Islands were enjoyable with a panoramic tour of La Gomera (unbelievable views and winding cliff-side roads) and a National Park tour in Santa Cruz. All were beautiful islands worthy of visiting.
Atlas Ocean Voyages includes a special Shoreside Epicurean Cultural Immersion on each of its European itineraries, and ours was on the island of La Palma. Dressing in cream and white, as instructed, almost 200 of us were taken into the countryside to attend a typical Carnaval de Los Indianos – a re-creation of one of Europe's most original and striking festivals. We enjoyed cocktails made with 100 percent local and organic products, saw artisans producing cigars, visited a sugar cane pressing workshop and listened to a fabulous 11-piece live Latin music band, which soon had guests up and dancing. We tasted local delicacies and enjoyed the stunning views, appreciating the cruise line's efforts to set up such a unique experience.
Back on the ship, there were wonderful lectures and port talks, movies with popcorn and cooking demonstrations given by a renowned visiting guest
chef, Christy Rost. Tea Time was offered daily to accompany piano stylings and occasional engaging games of Trivia or Name That Tune. Our Cruise Director, Michael, was ever-present, charming and talented, and we enjoyed various shows in the Dome Observation Lounge or the Atlas Lounge – the crew show was fantastic!
A great kick-off at the cruise's start was "Meet The Neighbours," where everyone was encouraged to open their stateroom door, enjoy cocktails and canapes, say hi to their neighbours, and meet some of the ship's officers. It was a great way to set sail, and on such a small ship, part of the charm was meeting fellow guests in whatever fashion.
Our ship offered one main Restaurant – Lisboa – with a popular dining terrace at the aft, ideal for a cruise in warm climes. Guests dined when, where and with whom they pleased, encouraging camaraderie. On the Pool Deck, the 7 Aft Grill served a buffet lunch, snacks in the afternoon and dinner for 18 guests per evening at the Josper Grill, which offered an à la carte menu with reservations required. We enjoyed a few lunches and two dinners from a small menu.
The self-serve ice cream cart nearby was also a big hit! Paula's Pantry offered daily snacks, tasty treats, sandwiches and drinks from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Atlas Ocean Voyages is getting everything right, offering guests appealing journeys to the world's most delightful places while ensuring a carefully curated and much-appreciated onboard atmosphere.

A transatlantic crossing on a legendary ship provides a nostalgic return to the sea
By Vanessa Lee
WE CROSSED THE ATLANTIC OCEAN from NYC to Southampton on board the world's only ocean liner, the Queen Mary 2, flagship of the Cunard fleet. She is a venerable Grand Dame of the Seas with impeccable heritage. I first boarded her in January 2004 for a spectacular christening ceremony in Southampton attended by HM, The Queen (as Godmother) and HRH The Prince Philip. To say it was an impressive occasion would be an understatement. When a curtain drop revealed Her Majesty's bagpiper, standing on the ship's highest forward point, playing “Amazing Grace’, it brought the house down and it brought me, as an Englishwoman, to tears. Later that evening, we all gathered for cocktails, Champagne and a gala dinner with gentlemen wearing black tie and their medals, and ladies in glamorous evening and ball gowns. We were all delighted to be invited to such a unique and auspicious occasion.
I have been a "Cunarder" since first sailing on the original Queen Elizabeth from Southampton to New York as an impressionable girl, accompanying my mother for a lengthy summer stay in Canada. That particular Queen retired in 1968, and a second Queen Elizabeth, known as QE2, joined the fleet in 1969. Cunard Line has an impressive and revered history dating to Halifax-born Sir Samuel Cunard in the 1840s. Originally used as mail ships, Cunard Line eventually merged with White Star Line in the 1930s, and Cunard has since offered White Star Service on board its vessels. The first transatlantic crossing was on the Britannia in July 1840 when Samuel Cunard sailed with author Charles Dickens from Liverpool to New York City. In another first, Cunard sailed a World Cruise in 1922 on the Laconia; Cunard has now carried more World Cruise guests than any other cruise company and still sails a World Cruise each year. It's the second oldest cruise brand in the world behind P&O.
Being a Cunarder, I had long known many interesting facts about this impressive brand, including the fact that all its ships – before the Queens – ended with the letters IA: Carmania, Mauretania, Carpathia, Servia and so on. The ships are instantly recognizable by their iconic red funnels and when boarding, you’re greeted by the Cunard Bellmen wearing their signature red uniforms and caps – a charming nod to the line's time-honoured heritage. The company has four ships now, including Queen Elizabeth, Queen Victoria, and the recently launched and absolutely stunning Queen Anne joining the fleet this year and sailing a World Cruise in 2025 – 109 nights roundtrip Southampton.
During these 20 intervening years, I have sailed on QM2 often but not for a crossing, which is a different experience than a regular cruise. And so, in early May 2024, we arrived in New York City to board this beautiful ocean liner, with seven days at sea ahead of
us as we set sail for England. A crossing can be as busy or peaceful and lazy as you wish – there is something to do virtually every hour of the day if one is so inclined. Many people, however, simply love to sit and read while contemplating a never-ending sea view. There is an impressive library of over 8,000 titles on the ship and each guest may take out two books at a time during the cruise, returning them on the last sea day. There are fascinating lectures and stage performances, including the Royal Shakespeare Company, excellent evening entertainment, daily trivia, exercise classes, a terrific spa and wellness centre, onboard shopping – including Liberty of London! – and a wealth of dining options. The world slows down marvellously during a week at sea, and each day unfolds with much expectation.
For many, a transatlantic crossing on Queen Mary 2 is high on the bucket list – it's a romantic, nostalgic rarity. Some are maritime or history lovers, and many love to sail time and again across the Atlantic or on other voyages just to enjoy the traditional aspects of life at sea, which Cunard offers in its unique style.
We frequented the Golden Lion Pub for craft ales and typical British pub food such as a Ploughman's Lunch or Steak and Ale Pie, and it was always packed. We also enjoyed stellar performances in the Royal Court Theatre and fascinating speakers in the Cunard Insights lecture series. We learned a great deal about Art History during a talk on 'London from Queen Victoria to King Charles III,' and dove into Maritime and World History, and Astronomy and Geophysics during presentations held very appropriately in the Illuminations theatre, repurposed from a planetarium at sea. There were watercolour art classes, dance classes, bridge lessons, blackjack tournaments and Mega-Jackpot Bingo (always a sell-out!). Music and dancing were ever-present on this ship, with talented performers entertaining us in various venues throughout the day and evening. We enjoyed a harpist in the Commodore Club, our pre-dinner cocktail locale, a pianist in the Chart Room and a string trio in the Grand Lobby. A folk duo played in the Carinthia Lounge, while another duo held court in the pub. Daily white-glove afternoon tea was served in the gloriously opulent Queens Room with finger sandwiches, scones, clotted Devon cream and jam in abundance – and, of course, with music as an accompaniment. It was one of the most popular and tasty daily options!
Other Cunard activities include outdoor deck games, darts competitions, space to promenade, golf putting and dancing in the Queens Room on most evenings. Cunard often references the onboard experience as harkening back to the golden age of travel – there's even a QM2 Orchestra. There was so much to see and do on our crossing that we could easily have sailed for 10 days. There are special dress-up evenings, and two nights are designated as Black Tie on each crossing. One of
ours was a Masquerade Ball with many fanciful masks on display. Another was "Red and Gold" night with gentlemen wearing red bow ties and pocket handkerchiefs, and ladies resplendent in long or shorter red cocktail gowns with matching accessories. Feather boas flew everywhere in the popular Champagne Bar and the Chart Room before and after dinner. Tuxes were available for rent onboard (though you needed to bring your shoes) at a reasonable US$200 fee. Shirts could also be rented and bowties could be purchased, all from well-known British tailor Moss Bros.
On board Queen Mary 2, your stateroom or suite is paired with the restaurant designated to that accommodation category. For a truly rarefied experience, you can sail in the top suites of Queens Grill. Guests there enjoy a spacious, elegant suite with the services of a butler and take their meals in Queens Grill Restaurant – at the same table with the same staff each day. We enjoyed our well-designed Princess Grill suite, with all of its marvellous amenities: a walk-in closet and ample drawer space, a mini-fridge, a tea kettle and coffee maker, an elegant sitting area, a balcony and both North American and UK plugs and charging ports for phones. We had a reserved table for two in Princess Grill Restaurant every day and appreciated the attentive, excellent service. Our Maitre'd was exceptional and suggested we order special dishes on a few occasions, including
Crepes Suzette and a Chateaubriand cooked to order tableside – something not often seen these days. Both categories of suites offer an exclusive Grills Lounge, a delightful spot for drinks and relaxation.
All guests also have alternate dining options such as The Steakhouse at the Verandah, which must be pre-reserved and requires an upcharge. The main restaurant onboard is the Britannia, and it serves a range of stateroom categories as well as the Britannia Club category, which offers a balcony room and a designated area in the two-storey and impressive Britannia Restaurant. Other casual dining options can be found at the Pub and Kings Court, which also provides a small, reservation-only area at night with a menu that changes halfway through the week – Italian, Asian or Indian cuisine. The buffet at Kings Court or the Lido on the other ships is a casual, popular spot for every meal. Gratuities are extra, as are drinks, but during the first two days of the sailing, guests can buy a drinks package that suits their needs – it's US$80 per person per day and includes all wines, beer, water, soft drinks and cocktails.
If you want something different laced with charming tradition and a dash of elegance, look no further than Cunard Line and its four ships. We certainly enjoyed a special and unique experience on the fabled Queen Mary 2.
