“We’re seeing a reduction in the number of weekly bookings made through legacy systems, and growing adoption of our NDC”: Air Canada’s Pierce By Kathryn Folliott

TORONTO — Change can be hard.

Not changing can be even harder. When Air Canada unveiled its nextphase NDC initiative earlier this year, the airline knew what lay ahead. Travel agencies were just starting to get back on their feet after enduring unimaginable difficulties during the pandemic. Demand for travel was off the charts. Agents were just trying to keep up, and agency owners and managers were dealing with a labour shortage. The last thing on any travel retailer’s mind was learning new ways to book airfares with IATA’s New Distribution Capability (NDC). Not that NDC is new. It’s been around since 2015, and most of the world’s major airlines, including Air Canada, are onboard. IATA and airlines see NDC as the way forward, with new booking protocols that allow airlines to fully showcase their complex fare offerings and add-ons. Plus, airlines have been pushing back on GDS segment fees for years. But NDC hit a wall of opposition with travel retailers when it was first introduced – and even now, years later, not everyone in the retail travel industry is a fan. While IATA and airlines have long advocated for the adoption of NDC, some in the retail travel sector feel the NDC format is too restrictive, and will require major upheaval with their booking systems. Air Canada made its next-phase NDC announcement in April fully aware of the challenges. “We know a lot of people might not even know what NDC is. We know change is difficult. There will be bumps along the way. But there is no perfect time, and

we have to start somewhere,” said Lisa Pierce, Air Canada’s VP, Global Sales & Air Canada Vacations, at the spring 2023 briefing. Air Canada’s best available seat inventory and discounted ancillary pricing went live via its NDC technology in mid-June, joining fare content already available including the carrier’s domestic Basic fares. At the same time Air Canada also ushered in its ‘Distribution Cost Recovery’ fee - paid by the customer - and applicable to all tickets issued globally via GDS EDIFACT channels to address the high expense of legacy models. The DCR does not apply to bookings made via any of Air Canada’s NDC connection options including NDC-sourced content in a GDS solution, as well as through Air Canada’s other direct booking channels such as aircanada.com, aircanada.com/agents, Air Canada for Business, and the Air Canada mobile app, or group bookings. Also in mid-June, Air Canada introduced a new NDC coupon incentive, to support travel agency transition to

NDC – and away from GDS EDIFACT channels. Travelweek caught up with Air Canada’s Pierce to find out how the airline’s next-phase NDC initiatives are being received by the industry, and what’s ahead. Travelweek: It’s been just over 4 months since the start of Air Canada’s NDC next-phase initiative. How has the rollout fared so far? Pierce: “We’re excited at the growth in adoption we’re seeing every week. Adapting to innovation isn’t always easy – we knew it would take time, engagement, and support on our side to help the transition for agency and corporate partners. Past innovations, like e-ticketing, seemed implausible at first, but we couldn’t imagine life without them today. We firmly believe in the benefits of NDC and we’re working diligently to expand our NDC’s reach to more points of sale.” Travelweek: Air Canada is doing everything it can to reach agents with its NDC message, offering webinars, workshops and more. What sort of numbers is Air Canada seeing in terms of agent participation at the webinars and workshops, and what’s been the reaction from agents when they understand Air Canada’s NDC offering? Pierce: “We’ve hosted 12 webinars and 13 in-person workshops with 350+ agents and owners in key cities across Canada, and we couldn’t be happier with engagement levels. Workshop evaluations have told us that the training was extremely well received, with significant knowledge October 19, 2023 | TRAVELWEEK | 3

TOP NEWS growth on the topic. Specifically, this included better understanding of the need for NDC, the options we’re offering for access, and that those currently using aircanada.com/agents won’t have to change their booking behaviour with Air Canada.” Travelweek: Has Air Canada been levying its Distribution Cost Recovery (DCR) fee for the past 4 months, and is there any indication that the fee is helping to sway bookings away from legacy channels? Pierce: “In fact, we are seeing a reduction in the number of weekly bookings made through legacy systems and growing adoption of our NDC. Ultimately, we want agencies to have access to the tools that best meet their needs. Those whose environment is best suited to using traditional GDS EDIFACT systems should continue to do so. However, the unsustainable costs of legacy systems means that tickets issued through those systems will be subject to the Distribution Cost Recovery.” Travelweek: When the June initiative rolled out, ACTA said that most agencies weren’t ready. What is Air Canada seeing from its perspective? Pierce: “We agree. Despite our robust ndc.aircanada.com website, multiple training initiatives and partner discussions, many are still navigating NDC or waiting for solutions that better meet their needs. We know our partners are hungry for more training and we’re adding more webinars in the

coming weeks and months. Like with many things, it’s not until the need is pressing that urgency sets in – the launch of our NDC and the Distribution Cost Recovery is providing that incentive.” Travelweek: What are the biggest misconceptions about NDC? Pierce: “The biggest misconception is that NDC only benefits airlines. The fact is, NDC replaces 1980s-era GDS EDIFACT technology that is unable to showcase all the content and fares available at globally competitive prices. NDC is now the travel industry standard, giving customers and partners access to rich content beyond the limits on price and availability presented by legacy technology. It also lets B2B customers enjoy direct and equal access to the content and products our customers get via our .com and mobile sites. With NDC, we can close the gap between those different channels and make more, richer content available to our corporate and agency partners, and ultimately, benefit our customers.” Travelweek: What surprises agents most about NDC? Pierce: “Our agency partners have been pleasantly surprised at the options available in accessing our NDC content, including in Amadeus, the free Air Canada Connex tool, via technology partners, and soon in Sabre and Travelport, as well as being able to work with us on custom solutions. For many, it’s also a relief to be able to book and access the full range of Air Canada products confidently via our agency website, and not be subject to Distribution Cost Recovery.”

Explora I channels luxury hotel vibes for a unique sailing experience By Vivian Vassos

Pierfrancesco Vago, the executive chairman of shipping giant MSC’s cruise division, told a full house back in October 2022 at the International Travel Show in New York City about Explora Journeys, his new venture set to launch in June 2023, much of the trade sat up in their chairs. “It is our new, ultra-luxe cruise line,” he said. Vago added that Explora I would be equipped with the latest environmental and marine technologies and designed to go off the beaten track. After its inaugural Northern European sailings this past summer, Explora I left Reykjavik in early September and crossed the Atlantic, making stops in Greenland and along the Canadian and New England coastlines to New York City. On Oct. 12, 2023, MSC made it official, with a lavish naming ceremony at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal. Agents, advisors, luxury travel

WE CAN BE SUCCESSFUL TOGETHER, AND AGENTS CAN EARN GREAT COMPENSATION industry leaders, MSC corporate and media, including Travelweek, were in attendance to celebrate the launch by its godmother, Dr. Sylvia Earle, the trailblazing 88-year-old American marine biologist and oceanographer. “Starting a new luxury brand, with family ownership [the Aponte Vago family is at the helm of MSC] of a company that has 300 years of business behind it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Michael Ungerer, formerly a COO at Carnival Cruises and, since 2019, CEO Explora Journeys, at the press conference prior to the festivities. With Explora Journeys, he added, the company is fuelling its ‘Ocean State of Mind’ philosophy, from the family’s born-and-raised on the water roots.

Like Ungerer, Chris Austin, the line’s CSO, is also a fairly new recruit with a background in luxe cruising, formerly of Seabourn. But, prior to that, Austin came up the ranks of Starwood Hotels & Resorts. “We asked more than 20,000 travellers and advisors what they wanted in a luxury brand,” he revealed. More often than not, he said, the answer: “A yacht-inspired ship, a ship that has space and choice, and cruise itineraries at a slower pace to allow a greater immersion in the destination.” Austin noted that Explora I has some of the largest cabins at sea – the Ocean Terrace suites clock in at an average of 35 square metres (377 square feet) – and there are 18 food and beverage options, “yet the ship still feels intimate.” At just 922 guests and 640 crew, it certainly felt that way while Travelweek was on board. “It feels like a cosmopolitan boutique hotel vibe,” said Austin. The company has leveraged Austin’s hotel background and built on it. The ship’s lobby, for example, really feels like a hotel lobby bar. Elegant, calming, yet still buzzy, the cool beiges, chocolate browns and golds make the space feel rich without a heaviness; a natural meeting place for before-dinner drinks and after-dinner connection. The ensuite bathrooms also impressed, from the

walk-in shower big enough for two to the walk-in closet to the comfy sunbed on the suite’s balcony. Later, when Travelweek sat down with Austin one-on-one, he made it clear that Explora Journeys is committed to the trade. Canada is critically important from a source market, he said. “We’ve already got two dedicated business relationship leaders, one in Toronto and one in Vancouver. We will staff up in Canada, part of our 2024 strategy, adding a French-speaking component and additional balance to the market, which will lean into Toronto and Montreal,” he said. But for all travel advisors, Austin believes that Explora Journeys “has written the boldest portfolio promotion terms in the industry, because we’re committed to the industry and committed to the trade. We’re in it for the long haul.” Explora I, he added, is not a one ship wonder, as the company is planning six ships by 2028. “I think every travel advisor in Canada should be learning more about the brand, betting on us, we can be very successful together, and advisors can earn great compensation; they’ve got a unique product to sell. And, to have the ability to present a brand that maybe their clients don’t know about, it puts them in a very powerful position. So the client is going to say, ‘why don’t I know about this brand?’ The advisor can say, I can tell you about this brand. I’ve seen the brand, I’ve experienced the brand.”

Advisors can inspire with ship visuals, he added, and not mention there’s a new cruise ship. “Instead, they should just send a photo of the lobby bar to their clients and say, ‘I want to tell you about this wonderful new resort.’ We’re proud to be in the cruise industry, but Explora Journeys is far more than that. If you’re going to attract the ‘new’ to ocean travel, you shouldn’t really start the conversation with the word ‘cruise.’” Travel advisors need to think strategically, and use the assets the company has created, “which are fantastic,” Austin continued, giving credit where credit is due. “And they’re fantastic because we created them through the art of listening to the travel advisor, what they wanted; we didn’t just release something, we had their feedback.” When the company looked at the industry, nobody was really talking

about the ocean, he added. “They talk about the ship and the places they go to. We talk about the ship, it’s an amazing destination in itself, we talk about the ports because that’s where people want to have experiences but we also talk about the ocean.” There’s nothing more calming and relaxing, he added, than water. “The ocean’s our home, we have to protect it and it’s driving that ocean state of mind,” he said. “We’re brand building, not brand finished, we still have a long way to go. And if we sit down in 10 years time I’d say the same thing; if you’re brand finished, you’ve lost all innovation, all creativity and you’ve become complacent. That’s never going to happen.” Explora I will spend November 2023 to March 2024 in the Caribbean, will swing to the west coast, including Los Angeles and Vancouver, in spring 2024 and start its 2024 European and North Sea journeys May to September 2024. Bookings for EXPLORA I’s summer 2024 journeys and its unique Destination Experiences in the Caribbean are now open. More details are at explorajourneys.com. ISRAEL CONFLICT Air Canada says it plans to resume regular flights to Israel as soon as the situation stabilizes. Air Canada, along with many other airlines, began cancelling Israel service after the Oct. 7 attacks. Air Canada’s normal schedule is 10 weekly flights from Canada to Tel Aviv from both Toronto (daily) and Montreal (three times weekly). Currently Air Canada’s regularly scheduled service is cancelled up to and including Oct. 31, 2023. There is a goodwill policy in place to enable passengers flying to/from Tel Aviv to make changes to their travel, including options for a refund. Air Canada, in coordination with the federal government, recently operated two repatriation flights to bring Canadians home from Israel. In the wake of the ongoing conflict, the Israel Ministry of Tourism (IMOT) is operating a ‘virtual office’ reachable via WhatsApp (+972 55 972 6931) or email (virtual@goisrael.gov.il). As reported earlier, airlines and tour operators have been posting updates for travel advisors and travellers as Israel’s inbound tourism industry shutters in the wake of the violence. “The Israel Ministry of Tourism (IMOT) is deeply saddened by the events that took place at our southern border with Gaza on Saturday, October 7, as well as the escalation of conflict that is targeting northern borders of Israel and the small cities, communities, and Kibbutzim throughout the region,” says IMOT. Updates on travel to and around Israel will be provided by IMOT as new information becomes available.

The expanded CanadaPanama Air Transport Agreement means airlines in both countries can introduce more flight options and routings. Each country’s airlines are now able to operate a total of 14 passenger flights per week, and an unlimited number of all-cargo flights. That’s up from nine flights per week for passenger and/or all-cargo services. Canada’s air transport agreement with Panama was concluded in 2008 and was previously expanded in 2013. “This important development in our air transport agreement with Panama will improve connectivity for passengers, deepen our cultural and commercial ties, and strengthen our supply chains. As we continue to support the recovery of our air industry, it’s great news when we see more options for travellers and businesses alike,” said Canada’s Minister of Transport, Pablo Rodriguez.

CRUISING Royal Caribbean has revealed the name of its next Icon class ship, set to debut in summer 2025. Called Star of the Seas, the highly anticipated ship, currently under construction in Turku, Finland, is a follow up to Icon of the Seas, Royal Caribbean’ International’s first Icon Class ship, which debuted in October 2022. That first ship set a single-day booking

record and led to the highest volume booking week in the brand’s then 53-year history. The unprecedented demand sparked Royal Caribbean to release 2025-2026 vacations on Icon three months ahead of schedule. If Star of the Seas is anything like its predecessor, cruisers are in for a real treat. Icon of the Seas includes six recordbreaking waterslides at Thrill Island’s Category 6 waterpark, seven pools, Surfside, a stay-all-day neighbourhood for young families, over 40 food and beverage venues and much more.

AIRPORTS A new airport has opened in Cambodia, designed to serve as an upgraded gateway to the country’s major tourist attraction, the centuries-old Angkor Wat temple complex in the northwestern province of Siem Reap. Construction on the airport, now Cambodia’s biggest, began in 2020. Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport was built at a cost of about US$1.1 billion on 700 hectares of land about 40 kilometers east of Angkor Wat.

Dawson, Townshend elected to TICO board; consultations open for funding proposals MISSISSAUGA — Andrew Dawson

and Robert Townshend have been elected to the TICO board as Industry Directors. The results came after TICO relaunched voting for the two Industry Director positions, after a technical error with the technology provider meant some participants at TICO’s Sept. 26 AGM were unable to complete the industry director vote. Dawson has been voted in for a two-year term and Townshend for a three-year term. CANADA’S HOTELS ACHIEVED RECORDBREAKING ADR AND REVPAR LEVELS IN 2023 The report looks at hotel price trends in 80+ major cities based on analysis of millions of hotel transactions and International Monetary Fund (IMF) economic data.

SKY-HIGH HOTEL RATES IN CANADA According to the report, Canada’s hotel industry achieved record-breaking average daily rate (ADR) and revenue per available room (RevPAR) levels in 2023. Vancouver saw the country’s highest occupancy, at 89%. A long list of new hotel construction projects across Canada was announced this year which will increase supply, putting downward pressure on rates. But new rooms may not arrive in significant numbers until later in 2024, according to the report. Across the country, rates are expected to rise by about 7.8%.

While global inflation is set to fall in 2024 it will continue to impact hotel costs, according to the report. A key factor here is staffing, with hotel wages in North America at record levels. While low occupancy traditionally acted as a trigger for hotels to lower rates, “today hotels are happy with lower occupancy so long as they can raise their rates. This is especially the case in destinations where hotels cannot deploy their full inventory because of staff shortages,” according to the report. Analysts believe that leisure travel

NEWS is likely to impact prices less as demand is now normalizing.

GLOBAL OUTLOOK U.S. – Inflation is slowing in the U.S., but hotel rates are set to continue their increase across the country off the back of occupancy growth in 2024. The return of major trade shows will drive demand into key convention cities such as Chicago, and Dallas. The report advises travel industry professionals to keep an eye on New York City, where new legislation for shortterm rentals could throttle supply, increasing hotels’ ability to push up prices on peak demand days. Meanwhile, despite ongoing investment in hotel inventory, cities with tight supply – especially Boston (11.3%) – could see significant price rises. Latin America – With modest growth expected and high inflation persisting across much of the region, hotel prices will continue to rise across the region. Europe – Despite modest economic prospects and a strong hotel development pipeline, hotel prices are trending upwards in 2024, albeit with reduced velocity compared to 2023. Africa – Amex GBT is forecasting a spread of rate rises across the continent. One note on Sub-Saharan Africa; the IMF warns that this region’s economic performance is particularly vulnerable to geopolitical tension. Asia – The reopening of China in early 2023 was a milestone for travel in Asia. As travellers return to this global growth leader – forecast to experience 5% GDP expansion in 2024 – the company expects significant rate increases as hotels seek to regain ground after modest price rises last year. Australasia – Inbound visitor numbers to Australia and New Zealand have rebounded sharply, even if they’ve not recovered to 2019 levels. Rates will continue to rise but new openings in key cities should moderate increases.

LVCVA AND PARTNERS AT THE ‘ VEGAS UNPLUGGED’ RETREAT IN MUSKOKA

Travel trade unplugs in Muskoka to learn the latest from Las Vegas MUSKOKA — The Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority took a different approach for its latest Canadian sales mission, hosting a Vegas-style retreat, ‘Vegas Unplugged’, in Muskoka. After meeting at the W Toronto for a morning of destination updates, participants were shuttled to the JW Marriott The Rosseau Muskoka Resort & Spa, about 2.5 hours north of Toronto, for an overnight retreat. There was a scavenger hunt, nature walk and cooking competition, plus, of course, plenty of time for one-onone meetings and lots of delicious food and drinks. Canada is key for Las Vegas. Canada was the city’s top source of international visitors prior to the pandemic, which is why it was important for the destination to get up north again to reconnect with the Canadian market. Some 10 LVCVA partners were on hand to meet with suppliers, tour operators and media in attendance. Participating partners included The Venetian Resort Las Vegas, Resorts World Las Vegas, The STRAT Hotel, Cirque du Soleil, Wynn and Encore Las Vegas, Caesars Entertainment, Travel Nevada, Fontainebleau Las Vegas, M

Resort & Spa and INDIGO. The biggest buzz at the retreat revolved around Sphere, the US$2.3 billion entertainment venue that’s being talked about as a ‘game changer’ in a city that’s already had so many. Standing more than 360 feet tall, Sphere has the world’s largest LED screen at 16K resolution that displays a variety of animations like fireworks, eyeballs and the moon with planets. U2 played Sphere’s first show in late September; the band’s ‘U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere’ residency runs until Dec. 16 with 25 shows during this stretch. Current travel numbers from Las Vegas are positive, showing strong post-pandemic recovery. In June, hotel occupancy was at 85.5%, up 2.8 points year-over-year, and the city welcomed 3.43 million visitors, an increase of 3.1 points year-over-year. The same month, Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) welcomed 4.88 million passengers, up 4.1 points yearover-year, surpassing the previous record for June set in 2022. Harry Reid Airport (the name changed from McCarran International Airport in 2021) is the most recovered of the top 20 largest airports in the U.S. based on a percentage of pre-pandemic seat capacity. More new developments in Las Vegas are certain to excite foodies. Chéri rooftop lounge is set to debut this fall within the Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas with iconic views of the Strip.
