TORONTO — There’s no question that travel insurance has played a critical role in travel’s rebound. With many insurance providers offering coverage specifically for COVID-19, travellers have been able to get back on planes and venture abroad with confidence, knowing that their health and safety would be entrusted to medical professionals during a global pandemic.
But with the World Health Organization (WHO) declaring last week that the pandemic is finally drawing to a close, a tell-tale sign that COVID-19 has evolved into an everyday part of life, what does this mean for the future of COVID-19 insurance?
“I think as long as there’s a need out there, there will be a product solution for it,” says Will McAleer, Executive Director, Travel Health Insurance Association of Canada. “Take the flu, for example. If you had the flu and needed to seek treatment while travelling, there’d be no need for specific testing to identify it as ‘the flu.’ It’s simply a medical reason for which you needed to seek treatment.
“As we progress in the pandemic, or if the WHO actually removes the pandemic notice, COVID-19 will simply be a coverage that is included within the scope of coverage provided under emergency medical treatment.”
Brad Dance, Chief Customer Officer at TuGo, also agrees, telling Travelweek that COVID-19 coverage is likely here to stay, as coverage for a cold or flu is today under Emergency Medical Insurance. But what might continue to evolve is how the Government of Canada addresses vaccination requirements, as they may impact how some insurance providers determine their future coverage.
“TuGo’s Emergency Medical Insurance has evolved over the last two years to cover COVID-19. We’ve built our policy wording to support the Government of Canada’s vaccination requirements for entry/and or return to Canada. We don’t foresee needing to change this, but we’ll continue to evolve our products to meet our customers’ needs, as needed,” says Dance.
At Ontario Blue Cross, similar guidelines are being followed in alignment with the WHO. Says Josiane Cousineau, Vice-President, Marketing and Customer Experience: “As COVID-19 becomes part of everyday life, our Emergency Medical Care coverage insures COVID-19 and its variants, unless it is considered a pre-existing condition prior to departure.
“Our position is aligned with the WHO’s, meaning as soon as COVID-19 is no longer considered a pandemic by the WHO, this condition will be treated like all other conditions in our contracts.”
But as COVID-19 evolves into just another common medical condition, does this mean COVID-19 testing will be a thing of the past?
McAleer thinks fewer and fewer COVID-19 tests will be required by insurance providers, “unless the benefit is so specific to a COVID-19 diagnosis that the only way to determine whether a traveller has the virus is through a test.”
If testing, however, is a requirement to board a plane or enter a country, McAleer says insurance providers will
I THINK AS LONG AS THERE’S A NEED OUT THERE, THERE WILL BE A PRODUCT SOLUTION FOR IT."
most likely continue to not cover the cost of the test. But the situation may be different if a traveller falls sick with COVID-19 while in destination, seeks medical attention and a COVID-19 test is ordered by a doctor.
“in this situation, I’m going to say most insurance providers will cover the cost of the test. There are probably a couple of companies that would still take a harsher standpoint and compartmentalize a COVID-19 test as a ‘no-no.’ However, most are taking a prudent approach where they’re saying, ‘If you’re being ordered to take a COVID-19 test and it shows you’re positive, why wouldn’t we go back and cover that test for you?’ Ultimately, it’s a small piece of the overall medical emergency,” says McAleer.
That being said, McAleer suggests shopping around for the travel insurance plan that best fits a traveller’s needs, as COVID-19 coverage can vary from provider to provider. While most providers will cover a traveller for medical emergencies should they require COVID-19-related medical treatment while away, where differences may occur is in the limit for coverage, which can range from anywhere between $100,000 to $5,000,000. Coverage may also differ for those who are vaccinated against COVID-19 versus non-vaccinated, with the limit for payment differing for those who may pose a larger risk should they become sick with COVID-19.
And going beyond coverage for medical expenses, McAleer adds that differences could also be found in coverage for expenses related to an imposed quarantine while away, if
Write to Cindy Sosroutomo at cindys@travelweek.ca
the traveller contracts the virus. Some plans include a per-day amount that would be paid if quarantined, but others will not, he says.
But the bottom line is that COVID-19 coverage is here to stay, which will come as a relief to all travellers. Regardless of what that coverage specifically entails, McAleer says there’s one thing all travellers should do when it comes to travel insurance: book early.
“You don’t want to say, ‘I booked three months ago but now I’m not feeling well and I’m going to go buy a travel insurance policy,’” he says. “Many companies will have purchase windows that will protect them from a claim on that because you now know about it. You want to make sure that you’re getting your insurance as close to booking as possible.”
TuGo’s Emergency Medical Insurance policy will cover travellers regardless of travel advisory levels issued by the Canadian government provided the traveller has met the applicable vaccine requirements outlined by the Government of Canada for entry and/ or return to Canada prior to departure, if there are any. Since there aren’t currently federal Government COVID-19 vaccine requirements for entry and/ or return to Canada, TuGo’s COVID-19 coverage is provided regardless of vaccination status.
If the federal Government of Canada reinstates vaccine requirements for entry/return to Canada while away on the trip, TuGo will still provide coverage under the COVID-19 benefit if there was no vaccine requirement prior to departing on the trip. However, if the federal Government of Canada reinstates vaccine requirements for entry/return to Canada in the future, TuGo will only provide coverage under the COVID-19 benefit if the traveller meets these new requirements before their date of departure.
If a traveller must cancel for COVID-19-related reason, there are two scenarios that may arise:
• If they purchased their travel insurance before Nov. 1, 2022, they are covered under the Trip Cancellation or Interruption coverage, if it took effect after March 30, 2022, under the same conditions as any other event mentioned in the contract.
• If they purchased their travel insurance on or after Nov. 1, 2022, they can be reimbursed for certain costs related to pandemics, only if they have purchased ‘Optional Protection: Pandemic coverage.’ This Pandemic coverage does not only insure COVID-19, but any other potential pandemics that may occur.
TORONTO — Hurtigruten Norway is making a big push into the North American market – and Canada is very much part of those plans.
The niche cruise company best known for its ‘Norwegian Coastal Express’ – that has more or less operated the exact same route and stops for the past 130 years – says it’s very committed to the Canadian market as it prepares to launch brand new premium sailings along the Norwegian coast in summer 2023.
The two new itineraries, sailing on the newly refurbished MS Trollfjord, are bound to make waves with Canadian travellers looking for something special for their next cruise.
The two new premium sailings also mark the biggest product evolution in the company’s 130-year history. Hurtigruten Norway’s team in Canada – now five people strong since hiring began pre-pandemic – want to make sure Canadian travel advisors, and their clients, know all about the new product offering.
With that in mind, Hurtigruten
Norway’s CEO, Hedda Felin, joined by Toronto-based Carly Biggart, VP Sales, North America, hosted an industry dinner event last week at EPOCH restaurant at The Ritz Carlton, Toronto, for a look at all that’s new with Hurtigruten Norway.
For some clients, an unforgettable cruise means decadence, opulence, crystal chandeliers and butler service.
For others, it means an authentic experience, dedication to the destination, and unique, off the beaten track ports of call.
Hurtigruten Norway puts itself firmly in the second camp.
The company built its legacy on regular scheduled service along the coast of Norway, bringing mail and provisions (and passengers) to the villages and towns dotting the shoreline.
While Hurtigruten Norway has come a long way in 130 years, it still carries mail and provisions to many of its 34 ports, just as it has since 1893. That access to so many ports of call gives passengers onboard Hurtigruten Norway’s seven ships an immersive Norway experience that can’t be found anywhere else.
“We don’t use the word luxury,” Felin told Travelweek. “It might be misinterpreted. What we offer is very authentic.”
On the newly refurbished 566-passenger MS Trollfjord this summer, passengers can sail both of Hurtigruten Norway’s two new premium itineraries: the 16-day Svalbard Express roundtrip from Bergen, and the
14-day North Cape Express from Oslo to Bergen or vice versa.
The Svalbard Express will debut in June, while the North Cape Express is timed specifically for the Northern Lights season (autumn, winter, and spring). The first sailing for the North Cape Express will be Sept. 26.
Both new routes are available as full roundtrip journeys, or shorter half journeys (both southbound and northbound), similar to the Norwegian Coastal Express.
Travel advisors familiar with Hurtigruten Norway’s Norwegian Coastal Express will find that the Svalbard Express and North Cape Express voyages are “drastically different”, according to the company.
Sailings on the beautifully renovated MS Trollfjord will offer:
• Half-or full-day port visits: The historic Norwegian Coastal Express route, for local travel and freight, visits up to seven ports a day, often for less than two hours. By contrast, the new Svalbard Express and North Cape Express itineraries will stop in only one port per day, allowing time for deeper exploration with 63 new, experience-rich excursions. Hurtigruten translates to ‘The Fast Route’, but on these premium sailings, passengers have much more time in port.
• Upgraded culinary program: First-ever culinary offerings include a food centre with cooking demonstrations/classes; picnics; afternoon tea; and wine, beer, champagne, and whisky tastings, as well as a cocktail bar. Hurtigruten Norway’s culinary
offering is based on its ‘Norway’s Coastal Kitchen’ concept, emphasizing local produce and sustainability. MS Trollfjord will offer three gourmet restaurants, a show kitchen and premium food tastings.
• Premium service: A higher crew-to-passenger ratio on the upgraded MS Trollfjord. Accommodation options on the ship include Polar Exterior (or Interior) cabins, Arctic Superior cabins and Expedition Suites.
Hurtigruten Norway is also the only cruise line to offer its unique Northern Lights Promise. Applicable to both the Norwegian Coastal Express route, and North Cape Express sailings, it means that if a traveller sails during
the auroral season and the Northern Lights do not occur, Hurtigruten Norway offers a free, second voyage.
And here’s another selling point: Hurtigruten Norway is working to create zero-emission ships by 2030. By the end of this year, Hurtigruten Norway will have completed one of the largest environmental upgrades in the history of European shipping, reducing CO2 and NOx emissions by 25 and 80%, respectively.
As part of the upgrade, Hurtigruten Norway launched its first battery-hybrid ship in September 2022, with two more conversions planned before year end.
All seven of Hurtigruten Norway’s ships have been refurbished over the past five years.
Meanwhile sister company Hurtigruten Expeditions launched the world’s first battery hybrid-powered cruise ship in 2019.

The Cayman Islands has surpassed its projections for visitor arrivals in 2022, with figures for both cruise and stayover visitation exceeding goals set by the Cayman Islands Government. Last year, the destination welcomed 1,027,668 visitors, with 743,394 cruise passengers and 284,274 stayover visitors. This far exceeded the goal of 200,000 stayover visitors set by the Department of Tourism. All travel restrictions were lifted at the end of August, resulting in soaring air arrivals. Visitation during the last quarter of 2022 averaged 89% of 2019’s numbers, and for the full year the Cayman Islands recorded 57% of 2019’s visitation numbers. At the end of 2022, stayover visitation exceeded the Department’s stretch goal by 11%.

MONTREAL — Air Canada Vacations is reaching out to Independent Travel Advisors directly with the launch of a new dedicated support program.
Called ACV@Home, the program is designed to provide assistance, creative tools and training for travel professionals working from home.
According to Nino Montagnese, Vice President at Air Canada Vacations, it was built with continuous feedback and collaboration from key agencies to ensure that the platform met the specific needs of the at-home community.
“Remaining connected and top of mind for at-home travel professionals is of utmost importance. After planning and talking to Independent Travel Advisors, we are proud to have elaborated a program that can accommodate this growing niche market with select key host agencies,” said Montagnese.
To support the ACV@Home program, Krista Rothfuchs has been appointed Area Sales Manager for Independent Advisors. Having worked with Independent advisors for many
years, she will be responsible for maintaining the relationships with these accounts and will work on establishing growth strategies for ACV’s diverse product portfolio.
Host agencies that are part of the ACV@Home Program will be providing their networks with further contact details and information on the program.
In addition, Air Canada Vacations has implemented its first-ever Masterclass Training program that offers a number of brief yet informative tutorials on its products.
New and experienced advisors alike will learn key differentiators of the tour operators via modules. Once modules are completed, Independent advisors will gain a certificate and a ‘Passport to Benefits’ savings booklet that includes several exclusive rewards.
In another first for the tour operator, Air Canada Vacations will also be launching an upcoming virtual awards ceremony called ‘Simply the Best Awards’ to recognize and reward this year’s top supporting agents. The ceremony will be held on Feb. 21, 2023. Invitations will be sent out to participating ACV@Home agencies.
TORONTO — The Association of Canadian Independent Travel Advisors (ACITA) continues to meet with representatives at all levels of government to keep the needs of independent travel advisors front and centre with government officials, including Minister of Transport, Omar Alghabra.
ACITA reported following their Feb. 8 meeting with Minister Alghabra: “Minister Alghabra was very well aware of the tremendous impact the recent weather related ‘ordeal’ (as he referred to it) had on our businesses, and while he doesn’t have immediate solutions to our unique challenges, he committed to being available to us to listen to our innovative ideas and creative solutions, and help however he can. He also recognized that there are more issues than just one weather event hindering our sector from recovery, and that all stakeholders play vital roles.”
ACITA and Minister Alghabra also discussed the need for changes to Air Passenger Protection Regulations (APPR).
“recognizes
REMAINING TOP OF MIND FOR AT-HOME TRAVEL PROFESSIONALS IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE."
“The Minister of Transport has maintained important communication with, and an understanding of the unique challenges within the sector. He recognized the vital role travel advisors play in the tourism industry, and specifically how it relates to the Transportation portfolio,” said ACITA.
ACITA’s meeting with Minister Alghabra came on the heels of another earlier meeting with MP Xavier Barsalou-Duval, Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. ACITA said it is determined to change an industry that has always been based on the ‘status quo’: “Our industry has changed, our business models have changed, our suppliers also need to change. We are responsible for 6070% of the business of a majority of our suppliers and feel there must be a way to have mutual respect, as valued partners. The MP was extremely helpful, providing some avenues to pursue next.”
ACITA added: “While it may seem we’ve been quiet at ACITA, we continue to stay connected to our supporters in government, working towards a plan to protect all travel advisors and travel agencies from commission recalls for work we’ve completed.”
VANCOUVER — Porter Airlines is celebrating its first flights with its new E195-E2 aircraft between Toronto Pearson (YYZ) and Vancouver International Airport (YVR).
Porter’s first flights to Vancouver took to the skies on Feb. 7. While Porter’s new E195-E2s officially launched earlier this month on flights to Ottawa and Montreal, the Vancouver flights mark Porter’s arrival in
western Canada.
Service on the Toronto Pearson-Vancouver route begins with one daily, nonstop return flight, increasing to three daily roundtrip flights by March 22.
More of Porter’s E195-E2 flights launch from Pearson begin this month. Edmonton launched on Feb. 14 while Calgary and Halifax are up next, on Feb. 22 and Feb. 23 respectively.
More destinations will be announced throughout 2023, says Porter. The E195-E2 can reach every key market in North America, including the west coast, to Mexico and the Caribbean. As part of its massive expansion plans announced in July 2021, Porter has ordered up to 100 E195-E2s, including 50 firm deliveries scheduled to arrive over the next two years.
Porter is debuting the E195-E2 for North American travellers, featuring a 132-seat, all-economy, two-by-two configuration, and free, fast WiFi for every passenger.
Travelweek recently took part in a preview flight on Porter’s new E195-E2 aircraft. Click here to read all about it, plus insights from Porter’s President and CEO, Michael Deluce on why the airline has set out to redefine economy class air travel.
Porter offers two fare categories: PorterClassic and PorterReserve. With PorterReserve, passengers get dedicated airport check-in, early boarding, enhanced legroom, two checked bags and the ability to change flights without a fee.
“Today’s flights between Toronto Pearson and Vancouver are the first opportunity for passengers to experience what Porter is offering for the economy traveller,” said Deluce yesterday. “It’s a level of service that is unheard of for North American airlines. It will appeal to business and leisure travellers who appreciate an elevated level of service at a reasonable price.”
THE E195-E2 CAN REACH EVERY KEY MARKET IN NORTH AMERICA, INCLUDING THE WEST COAST, TO MEXICO AND THE CARIBBEAN.

The team, which includes a former cruise ship employee, has a combined four decades of cruise-specific experience.
“The demand for cruise travel is clear and definitive. Our dedicated cruise specialist team’s focus is to bring better value and expertise, along with a more robust customer experience for our clients,” said Brian McLaren, EVP Flight Centre Canada.

According to Flight Centre, more than 60% of its cruises are booked through travel agents. Added McLaren: “With most major cruise lines reporting full or near full recovery versus pre-pandemic levels, pent-up demand from more than two years of restrictions and border closures

NASSAU PARADISE ISLAND — The latest inbound visitor stats from The Nassau Paradise Island Promotion Board show how the popular Bahamas destination has recovered from the pandemic.
The NPIPB says Nassau Paradise Island finished 2022 above what the promotion board saw in its record year in 2019.
Average occupancy increased 23.2% percentage points in 2022, up to 65.2% from 42% in 2021. Room revenue surpassed 2021 levels by 112%. And length of stay is now approaching six nights on average, says the NPIPB. That represents a half-day to one-day increase.
The tourism board also reports that 2022 total visits to Nassau Paradise Island were up 69% compared to 2021 and total website referrals to NPIPB partner resorts increased
47% versus the previous year. Meanwhile web search demand for ‘The Bahamas’ and ‘Nassau’ was up 20% and 41% stronger than in December 2021 respectively. NPIPB says it is investing in a new website, slated to be complete in early 2023, to capitalize on the search demand and continue to drive conversions.
As for lift, the NPIPB says nonstop air service from 38 markets in the U.S., Canada, Europe and South America into Lynden Pindling International Airport remains one of Nassau Paradise Island’s most important assets. During the pandemic and recovery since, the destination did not lose service from a single market.
Air arrivals through December 2022 were 90% of pre-pandemic levels. For 2023, capacity is growing, with February seats up 15% from 2022 levels, averaging 5,358 seats per day.
“It has been wonderful to see tourism to Nassau Paradise Island surpass pre-pandemic levels, and we are continuing to build on the momentum from last year to drive demand and make 2023 a banner year,” says NPIPB’s CEO, Joy Jibrilu. “Our island destination has so much to offer all types of visitors and as I reflect on 2022, I am so thankful for our partners and am extremely optimistic for the new year full of new resorts, more nonstop air service, new and returning special events, and more!"

TORONTO — Destination weddings to Italy are back in line with pre-pandemic numbers, according to the Italian National Tourist Board (ENIT).
In 2022 Italy was the wedding setting for more than 11,000 foreign couples, clear evidence of the sector’s upswing, says ENIT.
The data emerging from the Destination Weddings in Italy Observatory, conducted by Centro Studi Turistici (CST) and financed by the Ministry of Tourism, was presented in Rome this week by ENIT and Convention Bureau Italia.
Based on the length of stay of couples and guests at ceremonies (3.3 nights on average), for 2022 the Observatory estimates 619,000 arrivals and more than two million tourist presences linked to destination weddings, producing an estimated turnover of 599 million euros, about 11% more than the levels estimated in 2019, the last pre-Covid year.
In 2022, the share of couples choosing to get married in a wedding ceremony grew, which is now 54.1% of the total. For 2023, the estimated increase is over 1,000 more events than last year, with a growth forecast of +9.5%.
ENIT notes that Tuscany, with its scenic and artistic beauty, is Italy’s most sought after region by foreign couples, with 21% of the total. Tuscany is followed by Lombardy, Campania, Puglia, Sicily and Lazio.
“The wedding industry has significant benefits for the tourism industry by expanding the choices for a trip to Italy as well as the reputation of the Italy brand image. We need to be ready and strengthen the network with dedicated all-inclusive packages,” says ENIT’s CEO, Ivana Jelinic.
And Carlotta Ferrari, Convention Bureau Italia President, adds: “The upswing in destination weddings has been registered in all Italian regions, thanks to the strong desire to find
unique settings such as those in Tuscany, unusual places such as the Trulli, and typical localities such as Masseria.”
The Destination Weddings in Italy Observatory notes that after the pandemic years, couples are making greener choices, with greater awareness about the environment, traditions, and products.

TORONTO — Los Cabos made a memorable return to the Canadian market recently, with a spa event for Canadian media that underlined the destination’s commitment to the wellness and luxury markets.
The Los Cabos Tourism Board’s Managing Director, Rodrigo Esponda, hosted the ‘Finding Wellness in Los Cabos’ event at Toronto’s Sweat and Tonic, to highlight the destination’s 2023 ‘Wellness Champions’ campaign.
The all-day event included yoga, meditation and massage, as well as lunch and a presentation by Esponda.
“2023 will see Los Cabos embrace wellness in a way that no other destination has, leveraging our traditions, our natural beauty, and all-new, tailor-made experiences to empower our visitors to realize personal fulfilment,” said Esponda. “Community, authenticity, freedom, exploration, and balance - these are pillars of the Los Cabos experience and core to our approach to wellness in our upcoming campaign.”
Los Cabos’ Wellness Champions campaign is a response to growing global consciousness about the importance of self-care and mental health, said Esponda.
