Interview: Atlas Ocean Voyages president Alberto Aliberti tells us why the new cruise line is making waves
By Kathryn FolliottTORONTO — Jooking back on the first sailing for brand new cruise line Atlas Ocean Voyages, the amazing thing is not just that it launched during a pandemic, but that it managed to launch right on schedule.
And when the 196-passenger World Navigator set sail in August 2021, it was the culmination of 10 years of planning, and all the more incredible after 18 months of halted operations for the cruise industry.
“We could not have anticipated a pandemic when we first established the Atlas Ocean Voyages brand in late 2019,” Alberto Aliberti, President of Atlas Ocean Voyages, tells Travelweek in an exclusive interview.
That is no doubt an understatement. While every inch of the travel sector was deeply impacted by the challenges of the past two years, few were under as much scrutiny as cruising.
While the pandemic necessitated changes to World Navigator’s first itineraries, the ship did make a triumphant debut with departures from a much-loved destination.
“The pandemic impacted the unique itineraries to remote and bucket-list destinations we originally planned,” says Aliberti. “As the pandemic closed destinations to tourism, we quickly redeployed World Navigator to exclusively call in Egypt as part of her inaugural Greek Isles season.”
The pandemic also meant that Atlas guests were greeted with onboard health and safety protocols from the get-go. “Our unique
itineraries and strict, onboard health and safety protocols drew travellers to make World Navigator’s first season a success.”
More recently, World Navigator successfully wrapped up its inaugural Antarctica season - and even hosted the first official wedding on the so-called Seventh Continent, in February 2022.
“Atlas Ocean Voyages brings experienced travellers to remote and bucket-list destinations in our signature luxe-adventure style,” says Aliberti.
We checked in with Aliberti to find out more about Atlas Ocean Voyages and why it should be on the radar for Canadian travel advisors.
“WE ARE A DIFFERENT KIND OF LUXURY”
It’s been years since a new luxury cruise line appeared on the scene. Atlas Ocean Voyages showed up at just the right time, as clients tap pandemic savings to splash out on big upscale trips.
That’s fuelling the high-end market, which was growing in leaps and bounds even before the pandemic.
But while Atlas caters to the luxury traveller, the scene onboard isn’t stuff y. “We are a different kind of luxury. Our casually elegant style means there are no dress codes and no formal nights. We offer a wider menu of shoreside experiences that immerse guests in authentic cultures and lesser-travelled, small destinations,” says Aliberti.
Befitting its name, Atlas sails to ports around the world, from the Med, the British Isles and
Northern Europe, Iceland and Greenland, Norway’s fjords and the Arctic, to Africa and Antarctica, to the Caribbean and South America.
That may sound like a lot for one ship to handle. Good thing then that World Navigator is getting sister ships. World Traveller is scheduled for delivery in October 2022. Just like World Navigator, the new vessels will feature 98 suites, solo suites with no single supplements, and staterooms.
World Navigator will cruise England, Holland, France, the Norwegian fjords, Iceland, Greenland, and the Arctic in summer 2022, Central and South America in the autumn, and return to Antarctica for its winter 2022-23 season. In winter 2023, World Traveller will sail its inaugural season in Antarctica.
Three more sister ships, World Seeker, World Adventurer and World Discoverer, will join the fleet through 2024.
Aliberti says the Atlas experience onboard emphasizes exceptional service, all-inclusive, casual
elegance, luxuriously appointed accommodations and public spaces, and gourmet dining. Additionally, Atlas ships exclusively feature SeaSpa by L’OCCITANE, the French luxury brand’s first spa at sea.
THE RIGHT CLIENT FIT
Any client who gravitates to once-in-a-lifetime adventures in remote and unique destinations, personalized service and a luxurious ambience would be right at home on an Atlas ship, he adds.
Solo travellers especially are an ideal fi t for Atlas, thanks to the Solo Suites, with no single supplement. Aliberti says the response to the Solo Suites has been extremely positive. “Atlas Ocean Voyages exclusively offers suites for solo travellers without a single supplement. Solo Suite guests enjoy the benefi ts and priority service of double occupancy-suite guests, including butler service. Atlas’ Solo Suites has tapped into an underserved niche of travellers, who long to travel by themselves, not pay a single supplement, and still enjoy suite-level service,” he says.
Solo Suites are 183-sq.-ft. and feature a plush queen-size bed, flanked by twin nightstands with embedded USB and power outlets. There’s a 42”, flat-panel TV and infotainment system, and the marble-panelled bathroom features L’OCCITANE bath amenities. Ample storage in the Solo Suites includes two closets for clothes and even an additional shoe closet.
AGENT RATES FOR SEMINARS AT SEA
We asked Aliberti about its outreach to Canadian travel advisors.
“We look forward to partnering with more Canadian travel advisors and welcoming more Canadian travellers aboard our small, luxe-adventure ships,” he says.
Canadian agents are welcome to take part in the cruise line’s Seminars at Sea program, he added. Just announced, the onboard experience is aimed at helping travel advisors sail with Atlas and learn about the line’s “distinctive luxe-adventure style”
Starting this summer, agents can sail with Atlas for lead-in rates from starting from US$200 per night. There are 10 legs to choose from so far, from six to 13 nights, with options including the Norwegian fjords, the Arctic, Greenland and Iceland, Ireland and Great Britain. Departures are as early as June 17, 2022. And agents who bring fi ve or more guests along for the Seminars At Sea will sail for free.
An Atlas Ocean Voyages Sales Director hosts the agent on a
complimentary private land excursion, and presents three onboard seminars. Agents who take part can also receive up to US$1,400 in co-op marketing or US$1,400 reimbursement when they make a full-fare booking within 60 days of their voyage.
“They can bring their family and friends and share this incredible value and experience,” says Aliberti. “We know that once Canadian travel advisors experience Atlas firsthand, they will understand and appreciate our new style of luxury travel and exploration.”
Agents can also earn bonus commissions with deposited Atlas bookings throughout the month of May, for travel June - November onboard World Navigator, in honour of Travel Advisor Appreciation Month. Travel advisors are asked to mention promo code APPRECIATION at time of booking.
For more information and to reserve accommodation on Atlas’ Seminars At Sea, agents are asked to contact their Atlas Sales representative or call 1-844-44-ATLAS (1-844-442-8527).

are open and cannot wait to welcome back Canadian visitors”: Malcolm Roughead,
TORONTO — A long-time favourite with Canadian travellers, Scotland is anticipating strong numbers from the Canadian market in the coming months as travel rebounds.
In this exclusive interview, Malcolm Roughead, Chief Executive, VisitScotland talks about what Canadian travellers heading to Scotland can look forward to in 2022, why sustainable travel is so important coming out of the pandemic, and why travel advisors are crucial to the destination’s recovery.
Travelweek: Scotland has reopened and is welcoming Canadians back. That’s great news! What can visitors look forward to?
Roughead: Scotland and our tourism industry are fully open and after two long years we excited to be welcoming back Canadian visitors.
In 2019, Canada was one of our top 10 international markets in terms both of visitor volume and spend with the return of these visitors important for the recovery of our industry.
Returning and new direct routes via carriers such as Air Canada, Transat and WestJet to our two biggest cities mean that Scotland is now more accessible than ever to Canadian travellers.
Scotland is a destination that appeals to travellers on many different levels. For Canadian visitors, our history and culture are strong motivators with almost five million claiming Scottish ancestry. Meanwhile in recent years we have also seen film and TV shows set in Scotland such as Outlander, and our reputation as the ‘Home of Golf’ as key prompts to visit.
2022 is a big year for Scotland
with the return of live events. We are looking forward to The 150th Open golf tournament in St Andrews, 75th anniversary of the Edinburgh Festivals and return of the Highland Games across the country. We are also celebrating Scotland’s Year of Stories where we will celebrate stories inspired by, written, or created in Scotland.
We know Canadians love to explore different parts of Scotland as part of their trips. Offering a new experience is Scotland’s UNESCO Trail. Launched in October, this world-first trail brings together all 13 of Scotland’s UNESCO sites including Forth Bridge and Edinburgh World Heritage Sites, Highland and Shetland Global Geoparks, Galloway Biosphere and Glasgow and Dundee Creative Cities into one dedicated trail.
There has never been a better time to visit Scotland. Our message and that of the entire Scottish tourism industry is simple: we are open and cannot wait to welcome back Canadian visitors!
TW: What should Canadians keep in mind when it comes to requirements for travelling to Scotland right now?
Roughead: In terms of Covid-19, all restrictions on international travel into Scotland have now been removed, including quarantine and pre and post arrival testing. However, we still recommend visitors check requirements of the country they are departing from and any countries that are travelling through. Within Scotland all Covid-19 domestic restrictions have now lifted, however many businesses continue to have safety measures in place such as
enhanced cleaning and hand sanitizer stations for visitor peace of mind. For the latest advice visit our dedicated travel trade section of our website: https://traveltrade. visitscotland.org
TW: Is VisitScotland promoting off-the-beaten-track cities, promoting shoulder-season travel, and any other sustainable travel measures?
Roughead: Like many destinations as emerge from the pandemic, we want the recovery of Scottish tourism to be sustainable with our marketing and travel trade activity focused on encouraging visitors to explore all types of the year and discover destinations in Scotland they may not have experienced before, off the beaten path.
Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing global tourism community. Hosting COP-26 last year provided us with an opportunity to position Scotland as a leading destination for responsible tourism. As an organization, we were very proud to add VisitScotland to the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism.
The COVID-19 pandemic has
“We
Chief Executive, VisitScotland
made people pause and reflect about the future, the environment, and their impact on it. Visitors have always had an interest in sustainability however it is now more acute than ever. For example, when surveyed, 73% of longhaul travellers expressed great interest in travelling more sustainably in future and selecting destinations which are less crowded and with a commitment to making tourism sustainable. VisitScotland can help travellers plan and enjoy an eco-friendly trip.
Through our marketing and PR activity we promote sustainable experiences and encourage visitors to travel more responsibly. For example, our Tread Lightly campaign encourages both international and domestic visitors to visit all year round, explore destinations they may not have experienced before, stay longer, buy local and contribute to the sustainable quality of life of communities. This will ease pressure on busy areas and ensure the economic benefits of tourism are evenly spread across the country throughout the year.
To help consumers make more sustainable choices we highlight sustainable products and experiences to our travel trade partners, for example, through our year-round program of webinars and we are committed to working with the tourism industry here in Scotland to provide support and guidance on how to become more
sustainable for example through our Destination Net Zero program.
TW: How important are travel advisors to Scotland's recovery post-pandemic?
Roughead: The importance of travel advisors in the booking journey is a trend we are seeing across all markets following the Covid-19 pandemic including Canada.
As travel returns, increasingly prospective travellers are looking for reassurance and level of security around their holiday bookings.
This is where advisors and agents have a key role and why as part of our international recovery strategy, we are placing such importance on education, training, and engagement with travel trade.
The recent success of our industry event ‘Discover Scotland: Reconnect 2022’, which enabled our intermediary partners to connect with businesses here in Scotland to understand their products whilst also creating opportunities for businesses here in Scotland to engage with travel trade at a pivotal time in post-pandemic recovery, demonstrates the integral role travel advisors will play in the tourism recovery here in Scotland.
To support the reopening of more direct airline routes between Scotland and Canada, our travel trade team is hosting a series of destination training webinars for Canadian travel advisors in-person in Toronto on June 1 and virtually
on June 2. Join us to learn about the latest Scotland developments including new products and experiences, Q&A opportunities with our team along with one or two surprises on the day. Sign up here: https:// www.eventbrite.com/e/visitscotland-destination-training-tickets-334400911127.
TW: Is Scotland seeing a strong uptick in forward bookings from Canada?
Roughead: Pre-pandemic, Canada was a growing market and as travel returns, we are seeing high pentup demand for Scotland from this market. From recent conversations with our travel trade partners the outlook is positive with the return of more direct routes from Air Canada and WestJet this month further sign of optimism from the industry.
Anecdotally, tourism businesses in Scotland are reporting stronger bookings for the months ahead from Canadian visitors with the latest VisitBritain international consumer research supporting this with a rise in interest in holidays in Scotland and fall in concerns around Covid and travel in this market.
Like many destinations it will take time, however. We look forward to working with our valued travel trade partners in Canada on promoting and getting their clients excited about Scotland again. Join our webinars and learn more about why Scotland is the destination for your clients in 2022 and beyond.

Passengers landing at Israel’s Ben Gurion airport starting May 20, 2022 will no longer be required to perform a PCR test. Plus, foreigners are now allowed to take an antigen test before boarding the plane instead of a PCR test, in a move that took effect May 10. Any passenger who chooses the antigen option will be required to perform the test in the 24 hours prior to their departure to Israel. Israel has been welcoming visitors since March 1. “We are excited to make this announcement as Canadians have already started to fill flights to Israel and hotels in Israel,” said Gal Hana, Consul and Director, Israel Ministry of Tourism office.
RAIL
VIA Rail Canada has released its 2021 annual report, which shows ridership continuing to increase but remaining well below pre-pandemic levels. In 2021 ridership increased 31.9% while passenger revenues increased by 54.3%. Operating expenses also decreased by 3.2%. VIA Rail achieved its goal of staying on budget within the funding allocated by the Canadian government. “Despite the upheaval caused by the pandemic, we have successfully pursued our strategic plan, including the unveiling of our new fleet and the advancement of the High Frequency Rail project,” said Françoise Bertrand, Chairperson of the Board of Directors. VIA Rail achieved many milestones in 2021, from its new Corridor fleet to its new reservation system. The first trainset of the new Québec City-Windsor corridor fleet was delivered on time and on budget for testing and was unveiled at a ceremony at VIA Rail’s Ottawa Station in November 2021.

Québec City has been announced as the host of Can-
ada’s tourism marketplace, Rendez-vous Canada 2023.
Québec City was set to host the event in 2020, however it was deferred due to the pandemic. “In 2020, we indicated that the cancellation of Rendez-vous Canada in our destination was only a postponement. So, we are happy to welcome this grandiose and major event for the tourism industry in 2023,” says Robert Mercure, General Manager of Destination Québec cité. Destination Canada co-hosts Rendez-vous Canada in partnership with the Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC). The 2022 edition of Rendez-vous Canada kicks off in Toronto next week, running May 2427, 2022.

IATA says it welcomes guidance coming out of Europe that will see mask mandates lifted for airports and flights. IATA says the updated protocol reflects the high levels of vaccination, natural immunity levels, and the removal of domestic restrictions in many European nations. The updated guidance also acknowledges the need to move from an emergency situation to a more sustainable mode of managing COVID-19, says IATA.
DATE 2022 sees Canadian tour ops sign on for more lift to the D.R.
PUNTA CANA — Welcoming travel suppliers, international travel agents, media and more, the Dominican Annual Tourism Exchange (DATE) took place May 11-13 at the Barceló Bávaro Grand Resort in Punta Cana.
In its 22nd edition, DATE’s success is evident in its record-breaking numbers: 30% higher attendance, with 6,000+ business meetings scheduled, and 700 delegates.
MORE LIFT FROM CANADIAN TOUR OPS & AIRLINES
Welcoming delegates at DATE’S opening ceremonies, Rafael Blanco Tereja, President of the Hotel and Tourism Association of the Dominican (ASONAHORES), said “this level of participation represents a record for us and validates the importance of the Dominican tourism sector and the recovery of tourism after the pandemic.”
In the first four months of 2022, the D.R. has received more than 2.3 million tourists and is projected to surpass 7 million arrivals by the end of 2022, an all-time record.
Specific to the Canadian market, the D.R.’s Minister of Tourism, David Collado, together with ASONAHORES signed an agreement with Canadian tour operators and airlines, with the aim of promoting new air routes that will increase capacity to the destination from Canadian gateways.
The agreement was signed by Minister Collado along with the President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, and the President of ASONAHORES, Rafael Blanco Tejera, together with Renee Boisvert, VP Product, Air Transat; Eric Rodriguez, Executive VP, Sunwing; and Dina Bertolo, VP,
NUMBER ONE FOR RECOVERY
Just last week the World Tourism Organization, through its Secretary General, recognized the D.R. as the number one country in the world in the recovery of tourism worldwide.
In his opening remarks Tereja made sure to discuss the importance of tourism sector and its ability to contribute to transportation, foreign exchange, jobs and the thousands of enterprises that supply goods and services to that sector.
In acknowledging the work of the entire industry, Tereja also thanked the Tourism Minister Collado for his leadership and success in moving the destination forward with strength and success.
Collado had his own take on the exciting numbers the D.R. is seeing so far this year. The destination broke records with the greatest entry of foreigners in the history of D.R. tourism in April 2022, receiving 726,000 people, and Collado is projecting that this will continue into May.
He credited the entire industry, commenting: “It is a clear result of what happens when we all come together towards a common goal, when we leave out political interests and differences to focus on what matters. And what matters
are the jobs that have been recovered, the airports that are no longer empty, but full, the cruise ship ports full of tourists.”
Ensemble shareholders approve acquisition by Navigatr Group
TORONTO — The proposed acquisition of Ensemble Travel Group by Navigatr Group has been approved by Ensemble shareholders.
First announced in April 2022, the deal will see Ensemble remain a standalone entity within Navigatr Group. It will continue operations in the U.S. and Canada.
Navigatr Group, led by founder and CEO Jeff Willner, is the parent company of tour operator Kensington Tours along with retailers Travel Edge and Travel Edge Network, plus tech division TripArc.
In the days leading up to the announcement, Florida-based Hickory Global Partners mounted a war of words on the deal, accusing Ensemble of lack of transparency, after it said its own bid for the consortium wasn’t presented to Ensemble’s members.
However Ensemble shareholders voted in favour of the acquisition by Navigatr, a deal that Ensemble CEO David Harris says will yield benefits to members and suppliers alike creating a new and innovative consortium model.
The deal is expected to close at the end of May. Harris will assume the role of Chairman of Ensemble Travel Group post-acquisition.
Says Harris: “We are very pleased that the shareholders saw the myriad opportunities this deal offered for them from access to new technology and resources to the ability to streamline supplier contracts and programs. Among the many benefits is that Ensemble members will be able to transact as they have always done, but with access to additional revolutionary travel platforms such as ADX, which offers agents instant commission visibility, one click insurance and more to improve efficiencies and earnings.”
Michael Johnson, previous President of Travel Edge, is set to take on the role of President of Ensemble Travel Group.
“As I have come to know the Ensemble team and members over the past several months, I am more confident than ever of the value that this new consortium model represents,” said Johnson. “It’s been very gratifying to hear from members about their excitement
at the additional opportunities and resources that will be available to them to grow and enhance their businesses. The new Ensemble is truly poised for significant network growth to deliver for all of our stakeholders.”
Airport and passport delays adding insult to injury for travel industry: ACTA
TORONTO — Travel is taking off but the full restart is hampered by airport and passport delays, and ACTA is calling on the federal government to take action.
ACTA President Wendy Paradis says ACTA is urging the federal government — including Transport Minister Omar Alghabra, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Sean Fraser, and Tourism Minister Randy Boissonnault — to act quickly to ease administrative burdens at airports and passport offices. ACTA is also calling on the government to temporarily bring in staff from other programs to help with shortages.
She says ACTA is engaging government on these issues and
continues to advocate for removing all barriers to travel and tourism recovery.
“Canada’s travel industry, including travel agencies and independent travel agents, is just beginning the long road to recovery. It is essential that travellers have an efficient airport and passport process. ACTA has received reports of travellers cancelling reservations or deferring travel because of these delays, creating a further obstacle to recovery,” says Paradis.
AIRPORT LINEUPS
Security lineup delays at Canada’s biggest airports, including Pearson and Vancouver, have led to mounting levels of frustration for travellers in recent weeks.
Earlier this month CATSA CEO Mike Saunders issued an apology for the inconvenience to air travellers resulting from the recent increase in wait times at some major airports. He says the federal Crown corporation is “aggressively working to address the situation”, adding that the long lineups are due mainly to staff shortages.
Days later the GTAA, which manages and operates Toronto Pearson Airport, put the blame for the delays on legacy public health requirements in response to the pandemic.
IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT TRAVELLERS HAVE AN EFFICIENT AIRPORT AND PASSPORT PROCESS
ACTA HAS RECEIVED REPORTS OF TRAVELLERS CANCELLING OR DEFERRING TRAVEL
PASSPORT DELAYS
Meanwhile the wait times for passport renewals and applications have soared. The federal agency aims to process passports within 20 business days for mail-in applications, but by late April the wait was averaging 26 days.
Consumer news reports showing long lineups outside passport offices, with some would-be travellers camped out for hours, have been rampant.
The current situation just adds insult to injury for an industry that has already suffered extreme challenges for two years, she added.
“Considering the devastation that travel agencies and independent travel agents experienced throughout the COVID-19
People
pandemic, with most experiencing revenue losses of over 90%, administrative hurdles such as these are unacceptable,” said Paradis. The onus is on the government to fix this without delay, so that travel and tourism can recover.”

“By choosing to book with G Adventures, our travel community is also demonstrating there is a better way to travel - to go beyond the typical travel destinations and make a difference by ensuring their money supports local people. As important as it is to build our own businesses back, there are many local people in the places we visit who benefit economically when tourism is done right, and we want to help support them.”

Carnival’s Grand Bahama cruise port destination breaks ground
THE BAHAMAS — Carnival Cruise Line together with the Grand Bahama Port Authority and the Government of The Bahamas broke ground on Carnival’s new cruise port destination on Grand Bahama Island.
Executive and dignitaries were on hand for last week’s event, including Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy; Bahamas Prime Minister Philip Davis; Bahamas Deputy Prime Minister I. Chester Cooper; Minister for Grand Bahama Ginger Moxey; The Grand Bahama Port Authority Acting Chairman Sarah St. George; and Carnival Corp. CEO Arnold Donald.
The new Carnival Grand Bahama cruise port destination, expected to open in late 2024, is being developed on the south side of the island and will continue to serve as a gateway to Grand Bahama.
Additional details on the design, features and the name of the cruise port destination will be unveiled over the coming months, said Duffy.
“As we celebrate our 50 year partnership with The Bahamas, today’s groundbreaking on our incredible new Grand Bahama destination represents an opportunity to collaborate with the government and people of Grand Bahama – to contribute to the local economy through job and business opportunities, meaningfully engage with local communities, and further expand our experience offerings for our guests who will have a breathtaking new port of call to enjoy,” she said.
Duffy thanked the government of The Bahamas and The Grand Bahama Port Authority for their continued support as construction gets underway. “Our guests already love The Bahamas, and we are certain this new project will give them even more reason to want to visit,” she added.
Prime Minister Davis said Carnival’s investment in the islands will provide much needed jobs while also signalling new hope for the island’s recovery post-COVID-19. “With the start of this Carnival project, Grand Bahama is now on the better side of reaching its true economic potential,” he said.
The new cruise port development in The Bahamas includes a pier able to accommodate up to two of Carnival’s Excel-class ships including the 5,282-passenger Mardi Gras, which debuted in 2021, and sister ship Carnival Celebration,
which will begin sailing out of Miami later this year.
Guests will be able to explore and enjoy Grand Bahama by way of sea, via a dedicated shore excursion dock, or by land, via the dedicated ground transportation hub.
The cruise port itself will also feature an area designated as a nature reserve and an interior pool feature, along with many Bahamian-operated retail, food and beverage options.
Canadian travel agents are driving the destination, says JTB’s Donovan White
TORONTO — March 2022 ended on a high note for the Jamaica Tourist Board.
On March 31, the JTB ended its fiscal year with 1.9 million arrivals - which was 800,000 more than anticipated. “If there was a positive sign of recovery that would be it,” explained Donovan White, Director of Tourism for the Jamaica Tourist Board, during a recent interview with Travelweek.
“We’re pacing well ahead of where we were at this time in 2019 right now,” he added.
By April 16, 2022, Jamaica had removed all protocols relating to COVID-19: there’s no entry test required, no travel authorization needed, and no limit on capacity at hotels or mask mandates.
“We do recommend, as we’re still in a pandemic, to be cautious and encourage visitors if you’re in a crowded place, to put on a mask,” said White.
Travel advisors have been key to the Jamaica Tourist Board’s marketing strategy, detailed White, who described how the JTB has stayed engaged with advisors during the past two years, sending information, updates and regular newsletters highlighting what’s new on island and highlights of the destination.
“We’re extremely grateful (to travel agents) as they’re demonstrating their confidence in us by driving the destination. This will allow the Canadian market to get back within 80-85% of where we were in 2019 by next winter, which is our forecast,” said White.
His advice for travel advisors, based on the JTB’s research from travellers, is to ask clients the right questions. “People want the full experience: not just a great hotel
room, pool or lots of drinks at the bar. If agents are accessing our webinars or training sessions, they’ll see what we’re offering makes Jamaica the only choice in the Caribbean.”
“We’re going to push the envelope as far as we can take it, to satisfy the curiosity of the traveller today.”
When asked about the overall tourism market, White was cautious but optimistic, stating that if current trends continue, Jamaica will hit pre-pandemic numbers at about the third quarter of 2023, then begin to grow again.
“When the pandemic hit, we were poised to have our first double digit growth year in a long time,” said White. “We believe by the time we get to September 2023, we’ll be back to genuine growth.”
There’s a lot of pent-up demand from the travelling public, said White, with people wanting to travel to places they’ve never been. “We’re excited about what that represents for us as a destination,” he
said, adding that “we also want to allow people who have been here to have a vacation getaway that they’ve dreamed up or want to happen again.”
Celebrating its 60th anniversary of independence in 2022, Jamaica has curated luxurious experiences with their natural surroundings, attractions and especially culture: food, rum and music. “We provide an outsized opportunity for an experience you can’t have anywhere else in the region. I think the traveller today is interested in more than just being on the beach. They’re interested in being out and about and getting to know their surroundings and the people.”
“3 HOURS AND YOU’RE ON THE BEACH IN MOBAY”
Proximity is a differentiator, but White sees travellers pondering “‘what’s my best option for having my best experience?’”
He believes it comes down to appealing to the tastes and preferences of the visitor, to make them feel they’re going somewhere safe, and where they’ll have a curated experience that makes them feel like they’ve gotten value for their money.
And despite the pandemic, there’s a lot that’s new and in progress on the island of Jamaica.
Construction has begun on the new 2,000-room Princess Jamaica Resort in Hanover, while RIU Hotels is busy building its seventh property on island, the 800-room RIU Palace Hotel Aquarelle, in Falmouth, 35 minutes from Montego Bay International Airport.
Sandals Resorts meanwhile acquired two older properties during the pandemic. The former Jewels
I THINK THE TRAVELLER TODAY IS INTERESTED IN MORE THAN JUST BEING ON THE BEACH.
Dunn’s River Beach Resort & Spa and Jewels Runaway Bay Beach Resort & Waterpark will both will become Sandals hotels and will have 1,500 new rooms between both properties.
In downtown Kingston, Rok Hotel Kingston, Tapestry Collection by Hilton will bring 160 rooms to the capital, while the Hard Rock Hotel Rose Hall is on track and has broken ground in Montego Bay, adding 1,500 more rooms to the offerings in this area.
White stated there are other companies currently in search of locations on island, including AMR Collection. Another option to recommend to clients are villas, providing two to five bedrooms with a butler, chef and housekeeper.
JAMAICA’S HIDDEN GEM: ST. THOMAS
In the next five to 10 years, the newest destination on island to be
developed will be St. Thomas, located on the eastern coast of the country. Jamaica is currently constructing several new highways, including one that will go through St. Thomas.
The current plan will be a revitalization of the whole area, creating hotels, attractions, parks and restaurants as well as residential housing, agriculture and industrial development. There are several natural assets in St. Thomas, explained White, like hot springs, untouched beaches hidden behind cane fields and its location at the foot of the Blue Mountain.
The development of St. Thomas is just one of many reasons the JTB is looking forward to the next five to 10 years in Jamaica, said White. “We’re excited about it because it gives us the opportunity to create so much diversity and opportunity with an area rich in ecology, minerals, farms and foliage.”

Oceania opens 2024 Collection to record high booking volumes
MIAMI — When Oceania Cruises opened the books on its 2024 bookings, it resulted in one of the best-ever single-day booking periods in the cruise line’s history.
Reservations for Ocean’s 2024 Collection opened to the general public on May 4. The lineup includes 350+ voyages ranging from seven to 82 days in length, from October 2023 to December 2024. All destinations saw strong bookings for the cruise line that first day, with Asia as the most popular and with the 2023-2024 South America sailings and 2024 Northern Europe itineraries on the
1,238-guest Marina performing exceptionally well. Africa, the South Pacific, Australia and New Zealand also showed strong results.
The single most in-demand voyage was the 35-day circumnavigation of Australia departing Dec. 21, 2023, where more than 60% of capacity was filled in one day.
All of the bookings for 2023 and 2024 are new cash bookings with absolutely no dilution from Future Cruise Credits issued during the pandemic, says Howard Sherman, President & CEO of Oceania Cruises.
He adds that Oceania continues to see strong demand from newto-brand guests who are attracted to the line’s unique destination-rich itineraries with one-third of all bookings coming from first-time guests.
In addition, one-third of the total transactions included reservations for at least two voyages. Extended travel continues to prove popular with Grand Voyages performing well, he added.
“The 2024 Collection launch illustrates tremendous and continued strong demand for cruising in addition to highlighting the increased trend in planning travel farther out, both for past guests and new-to-brand guests,” said Sherman.

Tourism Ireland hosts in-person Canadian sales mission
TORONTO — Tourism Ireland is back – in person – with a cross-Canada sales mission that aimed to give travel agents a complete overview of what’s new on the island.
The tourist board, which hasn’t hosted in-person events since the start of the pandemic in February 2020, visited Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver and Victoria with a delegation of 15 tourism enterprises from Ireland and three Canadian partners.
The events were geared to helping agents sell Ireland by targeting key consumer passion points: adventure and experiences, ‘craic’ and culture, history and heritage, and luxury travel. Industry experts across Ireland hosted panel discussions, plus partners connected with travel and lifestyle media and influencers at two additional events while in Toronto and Vancouver.
“We are very excited to be back in action during this important series of events this week after two-year break from being able to connect with the travel trade in person,” said Sandra Moffatt, Manager, Tourism Ireland, Canada. “Canadian holidaymakers are highly valued, and our aim is to continue to rebuild visitor numbers from Canada with our extensive program of high impact campaigns and promotions.”
Moffatt added that the sales mission provides an “excellent platform to meet with and educate agents,” as well as kickstart Tourism Ireland’s promotional efforts that highlight Ireland’s offerings and famous hospitality.
“Ireland is open for business and we cannot wait to welcome Canadians back to the Emerald Isle. We are looking forward to getting out to meet the travel trade this week and thank them for helping to play such an important role in helping us to drive visitor numbers to Ireland,” said Moffatt.
Ireland currently has no travel restrictions in place. The country has also restored 96% of its 2019 air access from Canada. In 2019, Ireland welcomed nearly 11.2 million overseas visitors, resulting in revenue of almost €5.8 billion.
