REPORT

A Note from the Editor & Creator‌

I launched Trending with Tressie over 4 years ago as a way to share my knowledge, passion and obsession for new trends in the fashion and beauty industry. I had a vision of adding an extension of TwT, The Trend Report, as a way to showcase exclusive editorials we created to inspire. To showcase designer’s artful creations, and shine a spotlight on my favorite collections of the season. To also share the makeup and hair trends for this season, report runway looks & trends. But more than anything, I wanted to Inspire. I wanted to create. I wanted to ignite the passion I feel for fashion in everyone who opens The Trend Report.

COLLECTION REVIEW

U LYA N A SERGEENKO SS 15 HAUTE COUTURE Regal yet modern, the very structural collection was inspired by the artistic treasure of Georgia and Armenia. High on Haute Couture details, the collection showcases embroidered and hand stitched pieces in exaggerated volumes and artistic embellishment. There was a delicate poetry in the collection, as if inspired by Romance. In a fabric story of tulle, satin and silk, the collection includes bell shaped gowns, capes, bolero inspired tops, bustier dress and jumpsuit .Botanical motifs and stripes and colors like blue, baby pink, black and white created a playful yet elegant couture story. Sergeenko likes to reference specific eras of Russian history. She's an ambassador not just for her country but also for its traditions, employing upward of 100 people whose handwork is often native to the region. This season, she explained, she chose Russian neighbors Georgia and Armenia as points of departure. 6 Loreconda 12/01/15

True to form, the embellishments were exquisite, and at times mindnumbingly. Crisscross stripes on a pale blue dress weren't printed but embroidered with narrow bands of tulle hand-stitched in place, ironed, and accented at the intersections with tiny crystals. In some cases the fabric of a garment itself was embroidered all over. Why make tiny white stitches by the thousand when selecting a piece of white silk might do? Why not? The attention to detail was impressive. The best pieces—a strapless waffle silk dress with an emerald green velvet lining at the scalloped hem, an unstructured midnight blue frock with a draped cutout at the midriff and a pair of high slits—didn't verge into costume territory but retained a strength and dramatically demanded attention. Sergeenko, you had me at the black feather cape. I’m in love.

But what exactly is Haute Couture? A History lesson… {thanks Wikipedia!!}

H

aute couture can be referenced back as early as the 1700s. Rose Bertin, the French fashion designer to Queen Marie Antoinette, can be credited for bringing fashion and haute couture to French culture. French leadership in European fashion continued into the 18th century when influence was sourced from art, architecture, music, and fashions of the French court at Versailles were imitated across Europe. Visitors to Paris brought back clothing that was then copied by local dressmakers. Stylish women also ordered fashion dolls dressed in the latest Parisian fashion to serve as models.

In the 1960s, a group of young designers who had trained under men like Dior and Balenciaga left these established couture houses and opened their own establishments. Ted Lapidus, and Emanuel Ungaro. Japanese native and Paris-based Hanae

As railroads and steamships made European travel easier, it was increasingly common for wealthy women to travel to Paris to shop for clothing and accessories. French fitters and dressmakers were commonly thought to be the best in Europe, and real Parisian garments were considered better than local imitations.

Mori was also successful in establishing her own line.

The couturier Charles Frederick Worth (October 13, 1826–March 10, 1895), is widely considered the father of haute couture as it is known today. Although born in Bourne, Lincolnshire, England, Worth made his mark in the French fashion industry. Revolutionizing how dressmaking had been previously perceived, Worth made it so the dressmaker became the artist of garnishment: a fashion designer. While he created one-of-a-kind designs to please some of his titled or wealthy customers, he is best known for preparing a portfolio of designs that were shown on live models at the House of Worth. Clients selected one model, specified colors and fabrics, and had a duplicate garment tailor-made in Worth's workshop. Worth combined individual tailoring with a standardization more characteristic of the ready-to-wear clothing industry, which was also developing during this period. Following Worth's footsteps were , Patou, Poiret, Vionnet, Fortuny, Lanvin, Chanel, Mainbocher, Schiapar elli, Balenciaga, and Dior. Some of these fashion houses still exist today, under the leadership of modern designers. 24

The most successful of these young designers were Yves Saint Laurent, Pierre Cardin, André Courrèges,

Lacroix is one of the fashion houses to have been started in the late 20th century. Other new houses have included Jean-Paul Gaultier and Thierry Mugler. Due to the high expenses of producing haute couture collections, Lacroix and Mugler have since ceased their haute couture activities. Modernized haute couture shows are not designed and made to be sold, rather they are exactly what they are displayed for - for show. Instead of being constructed for the purpose of selling and making money, they are made to further the publicity, as well as perception and understanding of brand image. For all these fashion houses, custom clothing is no longer the main source of income, often costing much more than it earns through direct sales; it only adds the aura of fashion to their ventures in ready-to-wear clothing and related luxury products such as shoes and perfumes, and licensing ventures that earn greater returns for the company. Excessive commercialization and profit-making can be damaging, however. Cardin, for example, licensed with abandon in the 1980s and his name lost most of its fashionable cachet when anyone could buy Cardin luggage at a discount store. It is their ready-to-wear collections that are available to a wider audience, adding a splash of glamour and the feel of haute couture to more wardrobes

TRANS HUMAN ISM

SS15 collection by Marlon Gobel

!30

It explores human augmentation – a marriage of fashion and wearable technology.

Transhumanism: a cultural and intellectual movement seeking to transform the human condition by developing and making widely available technologies to greatly enhance human intellectual, physical, and psychological capacities.

This philosophy of “transhumanism” serves as the inspiration of the Marlon Gobel spring/summer 2015 collection. The collection is based around three main points: (1) human augmentation through technology resulting in us becoming stronger, faster, and better; (2) technology is fashion from the fabrics to the electronics we use; and (3) a “wearable device” can be anything from a water repellent fabric coat, to eyewear that captures what your eyes may miss, to a handheld super computer you use to communicate and share your life.

For spring 2015, designer Marlon Gobel has taken contemporary menswear and advanced it with a futuristic feel. He offers selections that vary upon lifestyle. For the more fit and athletic male, there are form-fitting tees and polo shirts paired with 5pocket shorts that fall perfectly at the knee. For the more universal casual wear customer, there are wonderful wardrobe staples offered in cotton dress shirts and full-fit trousers that fall right at the ankle. Asserting that you can be fashionforward even in a post-modern world, Gobel provides a doublebreasted blazer and a formal jacket for those who want a classic look, no matter the century. !34

TREND BEAUTY

SPRING MAKEUP Trends tend to look light and eortless.Think bronze skin, glossy lips and soft, pastel eyes, but the beauty on the runway this season threw us a few surprises in the form of seriously smoky shadow, vivid red lips and strokes of brilliant color. Here are the hottest trends you're going to want to rock this spring!

FINE LINES Black liquid eyeliner went from clean and slightly flicked at Oscar de la Renta (bellow right) to exaggeratedly winged-out at Marchesa (left) to a bottom accent line below the waterline at Emilio Pucci (below left)

!57

FLAMING LIPS At Dolce&Gabbana (left), deep berry lipstick was diffused around the edges for a sultry, stained effect, while Missoni showed a bright, flirty orange-red. (bottom left) Burberry Prorsum (bottom right)

!58

BROWN-EYED GIRLS Brown shed its humdrum image and showed its versatility on the spring runways, showing up in shades of cool taupe at Donna Karan (left), chocolate-y bronze at Roberto Cavalli and Giorgio Armani (below) and warm sand at J. Mendel

!59

FLASH OF COLOR The pop art eye makeup was showcased at shows like Peter Som (left) Honor (bottom right) Max Mara (bottom left) and Elie Saab where the artists used strips of leather, satin stickers and swipes of lipstick in place of traditional eyeliner.

!60

BARE MINIMUM At Tory Burch (left), they showcased fresh complexions and a minimum approach. “No-makeup” makeup doesn’t actually mean no makeup, but the illusion of none.—Light mascara, light liner, and nude tone shadows. At shows like Victoria Beckham (Bottom left) and Calvin Klein (bottom right) makeup artists used pinky-nude lipstick and blush for a more “barely-there” look.

TREND HAIR

Hair Trends to Rock your Spring !62

Undone Hair It feels freeing, liberating, and oozes confidence, that kind of ease. We love the move away from p o l i s h e d wave s a n d t owa r d deconstructed knots and loose, air-dried lengths with a hint of barely there bend at the ends. Working in contrast to spring’s romantic prints, glimmering embellishments, and colorful patchworks, the hair offsets all of that luxury in a way that feels young. That’s not to say that lowmaintenance means nomaintenance. Instead of a blowout, hair has to be a good color, a good length, and in good condition, and then it just works

!63

Low messy ponytail Effortless, but tres-chic nonetheless, low messy ponytails are packing the spring runways to show that sometimes simplicity is the best weapon. Wear curled loosely and undone or straight and messy, the low ponytail is the one style you can trust to look effortlessly chic. Perfect for pairing with a cute, simple dress.

!64

Slick Hair Bombshells, take note: High voltage hair no longer requires a blow-dryer. Slick, wet-looking strands—the kind procured from a quick dip in the ocean or a preparty shower— have never looked better. Wear with a body-con jumpsuit or diaphanous evening dress.

!65

Polished Ponytails Slick and glossy at Alexander Wang, scraped back low against the nape of the neck at Gucci, and softly crimped at Stella McCartney: Thanks to a quick play on texture, the classic ponytail managed to surprise and subvert on runways from New York to Paris.

!66

Boho Waves Carefree, barely-there waves are one of this springs hottest hair runway trends. Designers such as ChoĂŠ, Marchesa and Valentino have been showcasing these cascading waves onto sheer dresses, pastels and floral prints for a free spirited Bohemian vibe.

FRINGE NOW Fringe was by far one of the bigger hits from the spring 2015 runways, taking on a Josephine Baker look in a slinky metallic flapper-style dress at Proenza Schouler or a bohemian rhapsody of flared pants and jackets at Emilio Pucci. Rock the artful swish and swoosh of fringe this season, from a knit skirt covered in tiers of the eyelash-like adornment, to a jacket that’s sliced and diced with the rock ’n’ roll streamers.

FESTIVAL CHIC When it comes to festival season, don’t feel obligated to fall in line with the braided headband, peace sign–waving, denim cutoff game. This year, take the higher New Age road inspired by the spring 2015 runways. Whether you rock a psychedelic-printed pastel tank and flared pant, à la Pucci; the earthy, low-slung trousers at Dries van Noten; or the ribbontied vests at Dior, the flower child is all grown up: Here’s the best way to wear the look now, from embroidered ankle boots to flowing frocks. Channel your inner hippy.

NOT YOUR AVERAGE ANIMAL PRINT

Giles Spring 2015

Leopard print, although a classic, was a big trend on the Fall 2014 runways. This season, though, it's all about the wildlife. Creepy crawlers – from crabs and scorpions to seahorses and jelly fish – found their way onto dresses, and instead of tiger stripes, gowns showcased the face of the beasts.

GINGHAM Gingham prints aren't anything new, but for Spring 2015, designers are honing in on a new way of presenting them. Presented in a range of colors that are not your average picnic tablecloth print, this trend has fans beyond the more traditional wearer. This print whether blown up in size or sexed up in sheers, is primed for a street-style-worthy comeback.

MODERN SAFARI Prepare to take a wild adventure this Spring. Major designers seemed to have a safari in mind as they created chic khaki trench dresses, poncho coats, fern prints, and camo-inspired pieces that were anything but invisible. Not at all about roughing it, these safari-inspired looks have an upscale aesthetic.

THE NEW HIGH NECKLINE

Rochas Spring 2015

Conservative dressing was an unexpected change for many fashion houses showing this season, and it couldn't have been more evident in the buttoned-up, high-collared looks that came down the runways. From dickies at Christian Dior to turtleneck dresses at Prada, it's not typically the direction designers take for a Spring season, but it's one that might be a welcome antidote to all the sheer that's becoming a style standard.
