“Dr. Gunn and all her staff are just wonderful! Everyone is caring and concerned about every aspect of the surgery and the after care. Another surgeon botched reconstructive surgery after my mastectomy, Dr. Gunn completely redid my breasts with perfect results. After previous horrible experience, it’s so refreshing to be treated like a human being instead of a number in the system. Every concern was taken care of. APPAREL, ACCESSORIES AND MORE
How would you describe your style when it comes to home design and decor versus fashion?
nationwide but still very much local
I just go with what feels right. I never had deep pockets and that made me get creative. It was much easier to work with what I already had than to go broke by keeping up with my friends who were buying everything in the Pottery Barn catalog. I used to joke that I could do a whole house for the price that they paid for three throw pillows!
- styling raleigh since 2002 -
I believe in comfort above all. I live in my designs and I always want a zen, peaceful vibe going. If I knock my drink over on the couch, we just throw it all in the washer. Your life should not be dry clean only...that sounds horrible to me!

What “home styles” do you see coming into fashion? What do you see fading out and what are some staple styles and designs that will always be safe? Oh, man. I’m the wrong person to ask about trends! Obviously, this rustic farm look is gonna go fast and furious as soon as you all realize that you can't dust dilapidated rough wood and end up with cobwebs the size of your children taking over your home. It reminds me of the paneling craze in the 70s. I always say to go with classic and timeless - you can never go wrong. And don't buy an old house if you want a new house - simply save us all the heartache of watching you destroy it and you the heartache of never being happy by not having what you want.
What’s been your most difficult rehab to date? Each rehab has its own challenges. I have a couple of houses that were very painful emotionally. I just don't talk about them and I will never drive by them. I have a few that were just projects and brought little joy. Then there are ones like redoing my grandparents' home that make me pinch myself everyday because I’m so thankful it all worked out. It was a fluke that it fell into my lap, I was way pregnant and it needed huge renovations. I was obsessed with finishing it in time for their birthdays, which were a few months out. We worked around the clock and made our deadline! My grandmother loved it and shortly after that, she passed away. I'm so blessed that my guys helped me get that done in record time. I just had this feeling that time wasn't on our side. It’s a cherished property and I’ll own it forever. We use it a few times each year to celebrate special occasions and the rest of the time,

we AirBnB it. It's doing projects like that that make me so grateful for the opportunities that have come my way. I receive hundreds of emails from people wishing to save their family’s homes and they just can't swing it. I feel blessed. Describe your “perfect day” My perfect day is just kicking it at home with my family. I'm proud of my achievements in my career, but I worked out of necessity, not out of wanting to make a name for myself. So, with that being said, I cherish the days when we just get to sit at home and relax. We get to travel all the time with work and if I didn't get to, I'm sure I would dream of doing just that, but home is where it is. We had some fans find our house a few Sundays back. They legit found me at my "best" halfnaked in a sports bra and running shorts, planting flowers. The little one was chasing the dog chaos everywhere you looked! They had a look of shock on their faces (not sure why...they were the ones in my yard), but I think people expect a glamorous life and they will never find that here. They’ll find us living life to its fullest and happiest. Note to anyone reading, we would prefer you didn't come find our house on any day - not just Sundays! (laughs)

What are some of your fashion and beauty secrets? Can you share your favorite brands? Well, fashion secrets, I just had to laugh here! I love classic looks. My closet is mostly all black. I wouldn't know what to do in color! I really can't remember the last time I bought an article of clothing that didn’t have a practical purpose. However, if we have a night out, best believe I’m in super tall heels and an amazing vintage dress, carrying a matching vintage clutch. I'm not huge on accessories. I wear my grandmother's wedding ring along with big, ol’ diamond earrings that I gifted to myself when my youngest was born. I do my makeup in a mirror in my kitchen while my family is running around the house all crazy. I'm pretty simple, but I do have a love for eyelashes and will rock those even to take out the trash. True story.
Your biggest blooper that we, as viewers, haven’t witnessed? Oh, they make me edit my “F” words. Our crew is small and everything is done in-house. I'm the Executive Producer. We have one camera person, my crew, and then me in front of the camera. I'm in the editing bay with our talented editors putting the story together (never editing the whole show, it’s a nightmare staring at my own face for days on end and hearing my own voice - no thank you). But we've all worked on every cut together and collaborated to get the final product that goes on TV. So anything ridiculous, I like to put in there. We’ve never scripted the show. It's all off-the-cuff, and when you see me wearing sunglasses, it's because I didn't feel like putting makeup on or looking “presentable”. We shoot it as real as possible because that's how it plays out. So, our biggest “oops” are just my mouth. I have also breastfed a small human on demand for years, so there's a lot of boob shots that get caught too! What did you want to be when you were growing up? Ha! An attorney and President. Sounds pretty lonely and boring now compared to the life God handed me, right?! Where are some of your favorite places to shop? I shop local. I love little stores - hardware, boutiques. I’m the worst online shopper. I just don't get it. and if you were to see me in a large, retail store, it’s probably not really me. What’s coming up for Nicole this year? We’re filming. Yes, I said that. After an almost twoyear hiatus, much needed by the way and my choice, things are finally where I want them to be. I can go back to work happily instead of dealing with that FOMO on my life. I'm turning 43 and I’m probably in the best shape of my life (mentally and physically). Six packs can happen after two babies and the age of 40. I'm ready for the next chapter. I so appreciate our fans who have stood by our side for over a decade. I'm a badass that will crush anyone that crosses us wrong, but I also have a huge heart. The thoughtfulness and kindness of strangers we have met over the years through the show bring tears to my eyes. It's a wild ride and I'm just thankful. For more information about Nicole and to keep up with this ball of refurbishing fire, check out NicoleCurtis.com.

FALL TRENDS 7 TRENDS THAT ECHOED ON THE RUNWAYS OF FALL FASHION WEEK
NEON Bold neons spearheaded the traditional muted fall color palette on the runways of Versace and Balenciaga. Chartreuse in particular gave a fresh take on the traditional olive hue. The color was featured on utility and military inspired jackets. CHARTREUSE JACKET, ARCHITECTURAL NECKLACE, GEOMETRIC CLUTCH: AT EASE BOUTIQUE

SHIMMERING SILHOUETTES Designers embraced the luxe look of metallics this season. The runways of Celine and Dolce & Gobana were dripping with gold. Burberry also featured the shimmering style. To tone down the look for every day, pair with a natural textile like cashmere or cotton. BLACK TWEED DRESS, LEATHER GLOVES, SHAWL: BASH BOUTIQUE

TIMELESS TWEED Tweed is a classic fall fabrication. Marc Jacobs featured it in capes while Chanel showcased more tailored coats. The Chanel collection was the Virginie Viard’s debut line for the brand who succeeded as the house designer after the tragic loss of Karl Lagerfeld earlier this year. FRINGE TWEED TOP, GRAY PENCIL PANT, LARIAT PEARL NECKLACE: COPPER PENNY

SULTRY SLEEVES With a nod to the renaissance era, full sleeves are trending with a modern twist. While the trend is not a carbon copy out of a history of costume textbook, the inspiration is apparent. The bishop silhouette features a feminine flare with pickup detailing. The trend has also been featured in one sleeve and asymmetrical tops for more balance. LEOPARD LEGGINGS, PICKUP RENAISSANCE TOP, LINK NECKLACE: SMITTEN BOUTIQUE
fall | 23
CINCHED WAIST SILHOUETTES The feminine silhouette claimed as signature by Dior is being redefined on runways into a power symbol. Designers Givenchy and Stella McCartney belted suiting this season adding a feminine flare to traditional tailoring. When incorporating into your own wardrobe, try cinching the smallest portion of the body usually located just above the natural waistline for the most flattering appeal. LEOPARD DRESS: GLAM BOUTIQUE CRESCENT MOON NECKLACE: ZUNA APPAREL
24 | triangle style
PASSIONATE PURPLES While the blush fixation may be continuing, a new color is forecasted to take center stage. Various hues of purple will be popular from violet to plum and everything in-between. Even lavender, a favorited spring hue, will refresh the typically dark and sultry fall pigments. Designers from Kate Spade to Missoni embraced the purple obsession with their lines this season. PURPLE SMOCKED SHIRT: CT WEEKENDS
ROMANTIC FLORALS As forecasts suggested, florals continued to be a popular motif into fall on the runways of Prada and Alexander McQueen. The feminine florals are being offset this season by dark sensuality. Deep blues and blacks are replacing the print’s background colors for a more autumn appropriate look. FASHION FIXES: SKINNY JEANS
• Show Off Your Curves If you don’t have as much “junk in the trunk” or simply want to accentuate your behind, you’ll love this next styling hack! This fall, opt for jeans with detailed pockets. They will actually create the illusion of fuller buttocks. You’re welcome.
Skinny jeans are made for every single body type out there. Whether you’re leaning on the more slender or curvier side, certain styles can be chosen to accentuate your naturally beautiful body shape. Here are some of our favorite fixes to skinny jeans most common problems.
• Don’t Let Sagging Jeans Be A Drag Unless it’s the look you’re going for, sagging jeans can be a sight for sore eyes for an otherwise gorgeously styled outfit. Sometimes “lived-in” jeans can start to stretch, causing an unwanted sagging effect. To combat this, look for form-fitting jeans that have a cinched waistband or try sizing down instead.
• Don’t Loose It Over LooseAnkles and Tight Knees Skinny jeans with an overly wide ankle can be off-putting for some. If you prefer a more formfitting silhouette, opt for straight-cut or pencil style jeans instead. On the other hand, if your jeans are too tight around the knee, these same styles will work wonders in alleviating any discomfort, while still keeping you in style.
• Muffin Tops No More There’s nothing wrong with a little extra cushion in the mid-section, but jeans that are tighter on the stomach may not be as flattering and could also cause some discomfort. To draw the eye away from this area, opt for mid-and high-rise jean styles. And while we always love a classic look, it doesn’t hurt that these particular styles are currently very on-trend!

Cheslie MISS USA
KRYST NORTH CAROLINA’S QUEEN OF HEARTS
30 | triangle style
• Written by Heather Green • Photos provided by the Miss Universe Organization.
Third time’s a charm for Cheslie Kryst, North Carolina native and only one of three women to ever win the title of Miss NC and Miss USA. But this beauty also has brains! Cheslie attended Wake Forest University School of Law, graduating with a Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration. One could say that she’s truly the whole package! Triangle Style caught up with this jill-of-all-trades amidst her tour of the nation, crown in tow, to find out a little more about this Carolina Girl.
6021 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh 919.781.2898 • www.maggibridal.com
Consistently Rated “Wonderful”
Tell us what made you want to join the pageant circuit - have you always dreamed of being Miss USA? Not necessarily Miss USA, but I always knew I wanted to compete in pageants. My mom was a state titleholder when I was a child Mrs. North Carolina US 2002. When I was young I wanted to follow in her footsteps. I didn’t know how far I could or would go. Winning has far exceeded my wildest dreams! Tell us about your life in NC. Your favorite places to shop, eat, etc. I do a lot of shopping online, but when I had time, I used to go to Southpark Mall or the new outlets near Fort Mill. I used to live in South End in Charlotte before moving closer to uptown, and I was always eating sushi at Nikko. My favorite rolls were the VIP roll and the Volcano roll. I still go when I’m back in town and I always get the same thing. When I’m in Raleigh, Jimmy V’s is one of my go-to spots and so is Beasley’s.
Instagram + Facebook @maggibridalraleigh
How has life changed at home since becoming Miss USA? I don’t have an apartment at home anymore! I moved to the titleholder apartment in NYC the day after I won. Whenever I come home, I stay in hotels or with family or friends, so it’s a little odd not to come home to my own apartment anymore. Can you share some of your beauty and style secrets? Beauty - Keep your skin hydrated and drink lots of water! I’ve become more strategic about my skincare routine now that I’m Miss USA because I wear makeup much more often than I used to. I almost never sleep in my makeup. I only do when I’m exhausted after a long day. I know it’s terrible for my skin, so I try my best to never do that. Style - Your clothes MUST be properly tailored. Always.
How would you describe your style and how it has evolved? My style is classic with a modern twist. I’m an attorney, so I’m typically pretty conservative with my wardrobe. Being Miss USA is a full-time job, so I took a oneyear leave of absence from the practice of law until my reign is over. Since I won, I’ve been working to bring a little more fun and whimsy to my wardrobe. What have been some of the most surprising things about the pageant world to you? How many people have a connection to pageantry. Almost every time I meet someone, they tell me they have competed or that they have a friend or a family member who has. What have been the best parts of your journey? Most challenging? Any bloopers or funny stories you can share? The day after I won was such a whirlwind and it hasn’t stopped since then. I left my apartment at 4:30AM with just a couple of bags that I brought with me to the competition. I got on a plane to NYC and began my media tour. 16 | triangle style
Bloopers - The night of the competition, while I was onstage competing in swimsuit, I had the hardest time getting my sarong off! If you rewatch the swimsuit competition, you can see me struggling to get it untied. The fabric was a little rough and just wouldn’t slip apart when I pulled on it. I was panicking in my head, but everything ended up working out!
What advice would you have for those who want to follow in your footsteps? First, be your most authentic self. That will make you unique and you’ll stand out to the judges. Don’t worry about what you think they want to see or hear from you, just do what feels most natural to you. Second, know and accept that you may never win. You have to be okay with that and it’ll take some of the pressure off when you’re competing. It also requires you to actively think about the benefits you glean from competing other than getting a crown and a sash. What’s coming up for you this year? I’ve been named a National Impact Ambassador for Dress for Success. I’ll be traveling across the country throughout the year advocating for the organization and promoting their message and purpose of helping women achieve economic independence. I’ll also be talking about women’s empowerment and criminal justice reform. Beyond that, I’ll be preparing to represent the United States at the Miss Universe Competition!

LAYER LIKE A PRO in 5 Easy Steps
Layering jewelry is a wonderful way to express your personal style, bring in a trend or make a statement. By now you’ve probably noticed the layered look is everywhere. Worn by celebs, A-listers, bloggers and stylists, layering has been a hot trend for some time. When it comes to layering, this is not the time to just pile on anything and everything in hopes that you’ll become a trendsetter. Layering your pieces mindfully, in a way that flatters you, is the way to go. The good news is that you, too, can layer like a pro with a few tips. The best part is that you probably have everything you need already in your jewelry box.
34 | triangle style
Mary Michele Nidiffer, Founder, StyleFinder Boutique
The Short and Long of It • Start with a short necklace. It could be a choker or something a little longer. • Add in a longer necklace, perhaps something that has some texture to it. A beaded chain is a great second layer. • For your third layer choose something even longer, that has a pendant. Layers work best in odd numbers, and a pendant will help to ground your look.
Whether you're looking for a timeless, classic style or looking to make a bold statement, we've got you covered!
Mix, Don’t Match Choose necklaces that are complementary, but that have different weights and even different textures. This is also a great opportunity to mix your metals. Avoid wearing two or more necklaces with a similar chain weight because they will end up tangled.
Create Balance While layering delicate pieces is popular, that may not be right for you. If you feel that delicate pieces get lost on you, choose something bolder that creates a balanced look. Experimentation is key to getting the look you want, so don’t be afraid to try new things. When it feels right, you’ve nailed it.
Express Yourself Find pieces that put your own personal stamp on your look. You can bring in a signature look, whether it’s classic gold, animal print, beads, filigree, words, etc., but you want to create a theme. Your pieces don’t need to match, but they do need to relate. Your grouping of jewelry tells your story.
Bash Boutique of Raleigh carries an
extensive collection of designer women's clothing and accessories. You'll find a wide variety of dresses, tops, bottoms, and handbags.
But Wait, There’s More Why stop at necklaces? You can just as easily layer bracelets, rings and earrings. Have fun and see what you can create.
TIP: Take pictures so you’ll remember your favorite combinations. Then make swaps, adding in or taking away a piece or two to create just the right look for your outfit.

Hi Anna, I am going to go “there"…what exactly is vagina rejuvenation? Does it hurt and how long does it last? I already have two children but have not ruled out another, is it best to wait? Lastly are there any risks involved? Thank you - Krista
If there’s anyone you can go there with, it’s me! Vaginal rejuvenation refers to the growing group of procedures designed to address both functional and cosmetic vaginal concerns. Luckily, there are a variety of different modalities on the market (both surgical and non-surgical) and, personally, I am a big fan of Sciton’s diVa laser treatment. I’ve had this treatment myself and speak from experience when I corroborate diva’s 96% Worth It Rating on Real Self. This non-surgical treatment is made comfortable with topical anesthetic and treats a wide range of concerns, from laxity to dryness and incontinence to painful intercourse. Each treatment is quick--just 3 to 5 minutes--and there is no downtime! You may experience some light bleeding or discharge and you’ll need to abstain from vaginal sex for 48 hours, but as far as laser procedures go, diVa is very safe with very low rates of infection or other injury. If you’re considering having another child, I would definitely bring this up with your trusted provider when you come in for your consultation, but I wouldn’t necessarily rule a present-day diVa out depending on which concern you’re hoping to address. All in all, I wish you the best and congratulations on taking the first steps to regaining your pelvic health! Anna Churchill is the founder of Synergy Spa & Aesthetics with two locations in Raleigh. She also teaches corrective makeup and innovative skin care to dermatologists, plastic surgeons, aestheticians, and spa owners worldwide. Email your questions to askanna@trianglestyle.com

READER SPOTLIGHT My proudest accomplishment? Employing and helping the people and charities that we have helped so far - but I am even more excited about us becoming a TRUE women for women organization. We will be helping even more in this coming year and in the future, both locally and abroad, with our new Togo Africa Collection as well as with future collections coming... What piece of your wardrobe best represents your style? Anything sequin... I love a sequin cape. My day usually begins with… My phone alarm playing killing me softly by Lauren Hill and a Diet Sunkist. Your favorite Triangle discovery? Downtown Apex - I call it Raleigh’s best kept secret. It’s like Mayberry with great shopping and eats. Of course, Moon and Lola is my favorite store. Lol. The surf and turf burger at the Salem Street Pub is everything and the banana pudding ice cream at FRESH is ahhhhmazing!

Founder - Designer - Owner of Moon and Lola
Kelly Shatat, a creative type at heart, turned to designing jewelry as an outlet to fill the creative void left by her career in pharmacy. She got her start in the jewelry business by making and selling her designs at a Junior League holiday show in Greenville, NC where she sold out and took orders from several local boutiques. She began traveling around the Carolinas, calling on boutiques, hosting trunk shows and opening up new wholesale accounts. 44 | triangle style
Today the brand has been seen in over 1,000 boutiques and specialty retailers including Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom, and has a companyowned retail store in downtown Apex. In 2014 and 2015, Moon and Lola was featured on Oprah's Favorite Things list which led to national brand recognition. Today as a team of hardworking and inspiring women, Moon and Lola continues to design, market and distribute jewelry, home decor, party accessories, and more out of its 3,000 square foot design and production studio in Historic Downtown Apex.

Personal stories turn into advice, vignettes turn into examples, revelations turn into promises; and before too long, The Art of Asking becomes a well-crafted roadmap for living your truth, advocating from the heart for what you need, and trusting in your community – your friends, your fans, and your family – to help provide it.

5 Design Ideas Worth Stealing Have you ever been to a hotel that you love so much you are tempted to recreate some of the spaces in your own home? Just 2.5 hours from the Triangle,
The Hotel Weyanoke in Farmville, Virginia is one of them.
Known for its historic feel, the hotel's property dates back to 1925 where it once attracted guests including politicians and activists like Helen Keller. The newly renovated space combines old southern history with mid-century modern designs, easy to replicate at home. 60 | triangle style

Upholstered Chairs For Your Kitchen Table A little fabric can go a long way, especially when you put it where it's least expected. Adding upholstery adds a little extra flair to kitchen or dining room chairs, not to mention comfort.
Vintage Rugs Adding a vintage area rug softens the space and can add a touch of history into the room. Especially in rooms with wide windows and light washed walls, adding a pop of pattern creates an eye-popping centerpiece to any room.
Light Wash Wood Bed Frame: These wide leg light wash bed frames differ from the norm of a typical hotel room. The lightwash wood adds a level of relaxation and character to the room that can be easily replicated at home.

Surprising Items Your Overnight Guests Might Want in Their Room Sometimes guests are shy about asking for extras while staying over and might not be vocal about their needs. As the host, your job is to plan for even the smallest details and build a sense of hospitality.
64 | triangle style
Earplugs If there's more than one visitor staying in your guest room, rest assured that one of them will be a noisier sleeper than the other. Earplugs are a great way to help more sensitive guests settle down for the night and adapt to the evening sounds of your home.
LOCATED UNDER ONE ROOF TO BRING YOU A ONE-OF-A-KIND SHOPPING EXPERIENCE.
Most guests won't think to bring their own pair of earplugs, and many have never used them while they sleep, making this one of the more surprising items on the list. This little added touch goes a long way.
A Heated Blanket Good blankets are always a must for guests, but why buy a pile of blankets when a single one might do the trick? Some guests sleep hot, others sleep cold, and some just keep the window open and wing it. Heated blankets are perfect for the upcoming cooler months, heating up in a flash. Some heated blankets are split down the middle, letting both sleepers choose their optimal temperature. However, this doesn't mean that you should get rid of your other blankets. Giving your guests options makes them feel valued, special, and comfortable, just the way they should.
Spare Change of Clothes Simple, practical, and often overlooked. Offering your guests a spare change of clothes is an appreciated gesture. Instead of waiting for your visitors to shyly ask for something, have some clean pajamas, bathrobes, sweatpants, and t-shirts folded neatly in a drawer or hanging in a closet. Also it can’t hurt to leave a pair of warm fuzzy socks or a pair of slippers, so they can choose which they prefer, if they do at all. Better to offer than to not. Not only will your guests feel more welcome, but this practice will help to alleviate stress about 'bothering' you.

Perfume Bar
The Loose Ends
Adding a perfume bar is a fun and simple way to allow your visitors to choose a smell they like for their toiletries, sheets, and bedroom. Remember not to offer anything that can overpower your room or might aggravate allergies with intense combinations.
These last little bit of details can go a long way in making your guest feel at home.
A perfume bar can be made of anything, including: • Candles • Soaps • Linen Sprays • Fresh Flowers • Essential Oil Diffusers • Scented Hand/Body Lotion Your guests can pick and choose the scents they prefer, following along a fun theme, of course. Holiday, seasonal, and flower themed sets are always a hit.
Clothes Hamper: Use a small hamper for guests to keep dirty clothes separate from clean ones. If they are staying for an extended time make sure they know where the washer and dryer are located. Suitcase Racks: Give your guests the gift of space with this charming and simplistic piece of furniture that gets their bags off the floor. NIghtstand: Optimally it’s nice to have a nightstand with a drawer so their necessities can be tucked away neatly. Trash Can – Keep the guest room tidy by providing visitors with a place to dispose of their trash. Water and Snacks – Water and snacks are always a good idea. Guests might get hungry after dinner but might feel funny about asking.

feeling nervous? try blowing on your thumb The vagus nerve passes through many parts of the body and has the ability to lower your heart rate and blood pressure. Blowing on your thumb is one of the easiest ways to stimulate the vagus nerve. You will find that doing this helps you calm down, and steady your heart rate and blood pressure.
feeling down? try clenching a pencil between your teeth
HACKS FOR THE BODY
They may seem a little odd, but they can work for some people. These hacks can help you quickly get rid of a painful or otherwise troublesome problem quickly until you're ready to deal with it.
headache? try using cold water You can help a headache by increasing blood circulation around your body. You don't need to get on the treadmill, however. All you need to do is to turn on the cold-water faucet and hold your hands under it. Cold temperatures make your heart pump more blood around your hands to warm it up. The improved circulation in your hands affects the nerves going from your hands to your brain. It can help soothe your headache.
case of the hiccups? try stretching If you have a stubborn case of hiccups, you can get rid of them by raising your arms above your head, and stretching. Doing this helps ease the muscles around your diaphragm, and stops the involuntary contractions of your hiccups.
68 | triangle style
If you feel low, it can help to pick up a pencil and bite down hard on it. Doing this makes use of your smile muscles. You trick your brain into thinking that things must be okay if the smile muscles are activated. Clenching a pencil between your teeth for a few minutes can help you feel better.
toothache? ease it with an ice cube If you have a toothache, and you aren't going to the dentist right away, you can temporarily ease the pain by placing ice on the webbing between your thumb and your index finger. There are nerves there that signal pain to the brain. The cold of the ice cube deadens the nerves for a while.
Help a difficult pill go down more easily try tilting your head forward Some pills are large and can stick in your throat. Many people will instinctively take a drink of water and then tilt their head back in an attempt to straighten the esophagus, and make it easier for the pill to go down. Actually, however, tilting your head forward, not backward, helps. It can help by setting the pill afloat in the water so that it goes down when you swallow.
Phibrowsfairy_nc
arm asleep? Try moving your head around If you've slept on an arm, and find when you wake up that it is numb and tingly, you should know that it's probably that way because you've compressed the nerves supplying the arm, at your neck. Swiveling your head left and right can help free up the neck muscles, and ease pressure on the compressed nerves. You should see feeling return to your arm before long.
ticklish throat?

WEAR NOW LAYER LATER
Try scratching your ear Sometimes, when you have an allergy, it can end up causing an itch deep inside your throat, in a place that you can't scratch. Luckily, there's one thing that you can do to get at the itch. Use a finger to rub the back of your ear for a few minutes. It can cause a muscle spasm that succeeds in soothing the ticklish throat.
gag reflex? Try putting pressure on your left thumb If your gag reflex acts up at an inconvenient time, all you need to do is to make a fist with your left hand, with the thumb on the inside of the fist. The pressure on your thumb can help distract the brain and suppress the gag reflex.
nosebleed? try pressing down on your upper lip It's possible for some people, at least, to stop a nosebleed by pressing hard on the gums above their front teeth. All you need to do is to press down on your upper lip right under your nose, to deliver pressure to the artery in the gums that supplies the nosebleed. Doing this can quickly stop the bleeding.

APPS FOR YOUR WELL-BEING These days you can get an app for practically anything — But did you know that there are mental apps that can help your well being? We found a few that might be worth downloading.
Moodpath Available free for the iPhone and Android platforms, Moodpath helps you by giving you a free assessment of your mental health. While many apps ask you for information about how you've done over the past two weeks, Moodpath only asks you questions about how you currently feel. It asks you these questions over a period of two weeks, however. Once it completes assessing you, it allows you one of two options -- speaking to a professional or trying one of the dozens of mental health exercises or tools on the app.
What's Up? What's Up functions as a habit tracking diary. It's a one-stop destination for all kinds of coping mechanisms from breathing techniques to grounding exercises, and methods to recognize unhealthy thought patterns. If you're depressed, and you'd like a real person to speak to, it has a forum where you can get in touch with other people, as well.
Youper Youper is an artificial intelligence app that helps you manage depression. You get to chat with an AI assistant that asks you to think about your thoughts and behaviors each day. Then, the app comes up with the techniques that you need to follow to feel better. It can even give you a mental health summary to either help you understand yourself, or to show your doctor. 70 | triangle style
Happify When you're depressed, fun and games may be exactly what you need to feel better. Happify offers games and activities that are based on scientific principles such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and positive psychology. They are aimed at helping improve your mood. The app is free.
Pacifica This highly rated free app trains you in mindfulness, helping you identify your feelings and the causes of your problems. Once you successfully identify them, you get to learn to make peace with the challenges you face, through techniques such as muscle relaxation, mindfulness, meditation, and visualization. Pacifica is designed by a therapist and has great reviews.

Depression CBT Cognitive-behavioral therapy, or CBT, is a therapeutic method that helps people change their thoughts and actions using special techniques. This Androidonly app offers informative articles and mood tracking to help you fight negative thought patterns. You can even take a depression test from time to time to find out how much you've improved.
Be A TRENDSETTER Every SEASON
While apps may not replace therapy, they can help make you more aware of what you need to do to get better. In some cases, they can help you feel better, too. If you suffer from depression, anxiety or unhealthy thinking patterns, it can’t hurt to have these apps belong on your phone.

OF COACH LESLI DOARES
STOP THE
WHATABOUTISM IN YOUR MARRIAGE
If you’re in a relationship, especially a marriage, you have a built-in scapegoat. The tendency to focus on what your partner is doing (or not doing) is an easy trap to fall into.
Anytime a complaint is lodged against you, the ease of the “what about you” response is often too hard to resist. Unfortunately, “whataboutism” isn’t any more productive in your marriage than it is in politics. I can’t tell you how many times I have pointed out what one partner is doing that is harming the marriage, or made a suggestion to do something more productive, and have been met with “what about what he/she is doing?” Or, “why do I have to do that when they aren’t doing anything?” These may be legitimate questions, just not helpful ones. Especially if your goal is to have the marriage you want. This can be especially hard if you actually have been making positive changes and things don’t seem to be getting any better. It feels like you’re putting in all the effort and not reaping any rewards. I want to acknowledge that this is often ABSOLUTELY TRUE.
72 | triangle style
My somewhat flip response is, “So what?” Just because your partner is doing something unproductive doesn’t mean you can be equally irresponsible. That way lies the path to the end of your marriage. You made certain promises to your partner and it’s your responsibility to keep them. Yes, it’s their responsibility to keep theirs as well but you only have control over you. In addition, you don’t have a strong leg to stand on in requesting change from your partner if you are breaking your word.
You sure won’t want to miss our dogtastic Fashion Show November 9th at the Cotton Company in Wake Forest
Gate Nine BOUTIQUE
The other benefit? When you start making lasting and positive change, it can serve as an invitation to your partner to do better. It’s a law of physics that like attracts like. When you step up and behave better, it makes it easier for your partner to follow. The key word here is lasting. This is where the challenge comes in. Unless you are committed to the change, it is easy to fall back into the old ways. If there is a history of this in your relationship, the length of time for your new behavior to be recognized and trusted by your partner increases. There indeed may come a time when your partner’s lack of positive action becomes a stumbling block to a better marriage, but most people bail on their own better behavior before that happens. This just perpetuates the cycle of unhappiness and dissatisfaction and triggers the blame game all over again.

It takes courage and commitment to step up and be the hero of your marriage. It takes perseverance to honor your promises in the face of hurt and disappointment. It’s much easier to point fingers. That’s the reason many marriages aren’t all they could be. Marriage is for adults and adults take responsibility for their own behavior. They acknowledge their shortcomings and, if the goal is important enough, do what it takes to make things better. This doesn’t mean doing everything their partner asks. It means honoring the vows they made on their wedding day. What would get you to step up to the plate? Lesli Doares is a passionate believer in marriage, but marriage done right. SLOW COOKER CHICKEN TORTILLA SOUP WITH SPICED TORTILLA STRIPS
SPICED TORTILLA STRIPS 10 corn tortillas 1½ tablespoons canola or vegetable oil 1 teaspoon chili powder ½ teaspoon garlic powder ½ teaspoon onion powder ½ teaspoon paprika ½ teaspoon kosher salt • Make the soup: In a 6-quart slow cooker, combine all the soup ingredients except the cilantro and stir to combine. • Cover the slow cooker and cook for 3 to 4 hours on high heat or 6 to 8 hours on low heat, until the chicken is cooked through. Use two forks to shred the chicken and stir to distribute. Stir in the cilantro. • Make the tortilla strips: While the soup is cooking, preheat the oven to 400°F. Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil. • With the tortillas in a single stack, cut them into 1 × ¼-inch strips. Scatter the strips over the baking sheet and drizzle with the oil. Toss until all of the strips are well coated. • In a small bowl, mix together the chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and salt. Sprinkle the seasoning over the tortilla strips and toss until they are evenly coated. • Arrange the strips in an even layer. Bake for 5 minutes. Use a spoon or spatula to give the tortilla strips a toss. Place the baking sheet back in the oven and bake for an additional 5 minutes, until the strips are crispy. Set aside to cool. Use immediately or store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. • Ladle the soup into bowls and serve with the spiced tortilla strips and other desired toppings. 74 | triangle style
OPTIONAL TOPPINGS: SHREDDED CHEESE, DICED AVOCADO, SOUR CREAM OR PLAIN GREEK YOGURT, CHOPPED FRESH CILANTRO, SLICED SCALLIONS, LIME WEDGES
CREAMY ROASTED CAULIFLOWER CHOWDER
1 large head cauliflower, cored and roughly chopped 3 garlic cloves 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 medium yellow onion, chopped 2 medium carrots, chopped 2 celery stalks, chopped 1 dried bay leaf ½ teaspoon dried thyme ¼ cup all-purpose flour (you can use gluten-free flour) 3½ cups vegetable broth 1¼ cups milk ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese (we prefer white cheddar)
1) Preheat the oven to 400°F. 2) Arrange the chopped cauliflower and garlic cloves on a large baking sheet. Drizzle with the olive oil, season with a pinch of salt and pepper, and toss until well coated. Spread out the cauliflower and garlic in a single layer to avoid steaming. Roast for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring once, until the cauliflower is tender. Set aside to cool. When cool enough to handle, remove the garlic from its skin and finely chop. 3) In a large pot, melt the butter over medium-high heat. Add the onion and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, — Photography by Colin Price
until just beginning to soften. Add the carrots and celery and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in the chopped garlic, cauliflower, bay leaf, and dried thyme. Sprinkle the flour over the vegetables and mix to combine. Cook until the flour disappears, about 2 minutes. Pour in the broth, stir, and bring to a simmer. Cook for 10 minutes. Stir in the milk and cheese and continue mixing until the cheese is melted and the chowder is creamy, 2 to 3 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Discard the bay leaf. Ladle the chowder into bowls and serve warm.

CHEF SPOTLIGHT
CAROLINE MORRISON OF THE FICTION KITCHEN The Fiction Kitchen, in downtown Raleigh’s Arts & Warehouse district, is one of the only 100% vegan/vegetarian restaurants in the Capital City. Its mission: thoughtful, creative and approachable vegetarian cuisine prepared with the freshest seasonal and locally-sourced ingredients. Recognized for its diverse menu, local beers, thoughtful wine selection and signature cocktails, The Fiction Kitchen is perhaps best known for treating omnivores to a satisfying, often mind-blowing introduction to vegetarian cuisine. The knowledgeable and attentive staff takes pride in providing great customer service and catering to a variety of dietary needs. The intimate, lively dining area blends a sense of familiar comfort with an exciting, ever-changing artist’s palette of sound and vision. Chef Caroline Morrison is a North Carolina native who discovered her passion for cooking partly out of frustration from being vegetarian in the South. She knew there was an abundance of produce within the region, but dining options seemed lackluster, cursory and often made from canned or frozen products. This propelled her to earn her culinary degree and begin experimenting with pop-up events hosted with partner/co-owner, Siobhan Southern. Together, they opened The Fiction Kitchen in 2013.

Altered Aesthetics, located in North Raleigh, is one of the Premier Cosmetic Tattoo Studios in the RaleighDurham area. Jen Santoro, owner and cosmetic tattoo artist, and her team are dedicated to giving clients the highest quality experience in a clean, comfortable environment. The Altered Aesthetics mission is to make everyone that walks through their doors feel beautiful, confident and empowered.
most requested Triangle Style provides readers with an inside look at the Triangle and its businesses. If you want some insight on where to go for certain beauty treatments, then look no further than Triangle Style’s Most Requested. This issue, we interviewed Altered Aesthetics and Gunn Plastic Surgery.
THE MOST REQUESTED PROCEDURE: The studio’s most requested service is the Combination Brow. This style of brow is a combination of two techniques, Microblading, and the Ombré Powder Brow. When creating Combo Brows, they use a combination of manual Microblading for adding individual, natural hair strokes and machine work, to create a soft powder brow effect. The combination of Microblading and powder Ombré brows is the ultimate brow when you are looking for a bold, but natural look. THE FAQS: DOES IT HURT? Altered Aesthetics uses Zensa Numbing Cream, a highly effective topical anesthetic cream used before the procedure to numb the area. They also use additional topical anesthetic during the procedure to ensure their clients are as comfortable as possible. Pain threshold levels vary from person to person and every effort is made to ensure you remain comfortable for the entirety of the procedure. WHAT IS THE PRICING RANGE? Brow Services start at $400 and go up to $650, depending on the artist and brow treatment you prefer. More information on services and pricing can be found on their website: www.alteredaesthetics.com. WHAT IS THE DOWNTIME FOR THESE SERVICES? The majority of clients leave with beautiful new brows and very little redness and/or tenderness. They can easily go about their day as if they had nothing done. Altered Aesthetics advises all clients to keep their brows as dry as possible; which means no swimming, no steam rooms and no working out for 7 – 10 days post procedure. WHAT CONTINUED EDUCATION OR NEW TECHNOLOGY IS INVOLVED IN THIS PROCEDURE? Altered Aesthetics prides themselves on continual education and taking as many courses as possible so that they may stay on top of any new techniques or offerings available in cosmetic tattooing.

From the moment a patient enters their facility, they become part of the Gunn Plastic Surgery Center family. THE MOST REQUESTED PROCEDURE: One of the most requested procedures is a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty. Women of all ages seek this procedure to improve the appearance of their mid-section. During the procedure, the core abdominal muscles are tightened, the excess skin is removed, and contouring liposuction is performed. THE FAQS: DOES IT HURT? Pain is relative for each person. Patients experience discomfort mainly for the ďŹ rst 3 days. The abdomen will feel tight for a while. WHAT IS THE PRICING RANGE? The average cost of a tummy tuck varies from person to person. On average, expect a budget of around $9000. The price of an initial consultation is $100, and that does apply towards the surgery if scheduled within a year. Gunn Plastic Surgery is happy to waive the consultation fee for anyone who mentions this article. For more information on services and pricing visit their website: gunnmd.com. WHAT IS THE DOWNTIME FOR THESE SERVICES? Following the procedure, patients are asked to refrain from driving for a few days. Most routine activities can be resumed within a few days, but strenuous and high impact activities should be limited for 6 weeks post-op to protect the muscle tightening. WHAT CONTINUED EDUCATION OR NEW TECHNOLOGY IS INVOLVED IN THIS PROCEDURE? Advances in tummy tuck have allowed us to be more aggressive and do liposuction at the same time, as well as have fewer issues with wound healing. There are many new non-invasive modalities for contouring the abdomen, but, for patients with excess skin laxity who need tightening of their abdominal muscles, there is no substitute for a tummy tuck. fall | 79

THE 7 MOST EFFECTIVE ESSENTIAL OILS FOR STRESS RELIEF Scents have a powerful ability to trigger memories and evoke feelings, and they even affect the nervous system by sending signals to the parts of the brain that regulate mood. When it comes to relieving stress, certain scents are more effective than others, and essential oils offer an excellent opportunity to isolate those scents without having to deal with artificial chemicals and synthetic fragrances. Below are the best essential oils to use for relieving stress, anxiety, and other mood imbalances.
LAVENDER Lavender has long been prized for its soothing scent, and recent studies have backed up its stressfighting properties. A nursing study found that applying lavender essential oil to clothing was particularly effective at staving off work-related stress, and that people who inhaled lavender aroma before taking memory tests performed better and reported lower levels of stress than those who used a placebo aroma. Lavender oil is readily available from any source that sells essential oils, and because of its popularity, it is also common to see lavender-infused bath salts, massage oils, and even teas. ORANGE Preliminary research suggests that oil derived from both sweet and bitter species of orange can help alleviate anxiety. In fact, they may be especially useful for those who suffer from social anxiety, as one study revealed that inhaling diffused orange oil led to lower stress levels in public speaking situations compared to both a placebo and a control aroma. Pure orange essential oils 80 | triangle style
are ideal, but in a pinch, crushing or folding a piece of fresh orange peel can also release a small burst of citrus oil.
CHAMOMILE Thanks to its calming scent, chamomile is often added to tea blends, but new studies suggest that essential oil extracted from the plant may have potent stress-fighting properties as well. Research conducted by the University of Pennsylvania's School of Medicine concluded that chamomile has both anti-anxiety and mild anti-depressive qualities, and that it may help with irritability as well. Chamomile can be steeped in tea or taken in capsule form, but for best antistress results, consider applying it topically by mixing it with a carrier oil--just be aware that some people with ragweed allergies report minor skin reactions to chamomile, so test it on a small patch of non-sensitive skin first. YUZU Though it is likely unfamiliar to most westerners, oil from the yuzu fruit has been used as a relaxation tool in Japanese
aromatherapy for hundreds of years. Scientific literature on the fruit is scarce, but several small studies have established a link between yuzu oil and temporary suppression of the sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the body's fight-or-flight response.
LEMONGRASS Lemongrass oil is a staple of many spas that specialize in aromatherapy, and for good reason. A 2015 study seeking to measure anxiety levels found that inhaling diffused lemongrass oil led to an immediate reduction in stress and tension levels in participants compared to the control and placebo groups. Not only that, but the lemongrass group also recovered from stress much more quickly than the other groups, suggesting promising uses for lemongrass oil in the treatment of stress following traumatic experiences. VETIVER Though clinical testing has only been performed on mice, vetiver extract was found to significantly reduce stress-related symptoms such as increased heart rate and muscle tightness, and anecdotal data suggests that the effect on humans is similar, albeit less potent. Essential oil made from vetiver is unique due to its very slow evaporation cycle, meaning that oil applied topically or sprayed onto clothing takes multiple days to fully disappear. The lengthy drying time makes vetiver oil an excellent option for people who are going to be in prolonged stressful situations, such as multi-day speaking tours or presentations. BERGAMOT Bergamot is the source of Earl Grey tea's signature aroma, and the oil of this small citrus fruit boasts a number of stress-busting properties. Exposure to bergamot essential oil was found to promote positive feelings and measurably reduce levels of cortisol, commonly referred to as the body's "stress hormone." Bergamot can also be used to alleviate symptoms of fatigue stemming from emotional or mental stress. For best results, bergamot essential oil should be applied topically by mixing it with a carrier oil, such as jojoba oil or avocado oil. Aromatherapy has long been used as an all-natural way to treat stress and anxiety, and the widespread availability of quality essential oils has made the benefits easier than ever to experience. Wither diffused in the air or applied topically with a carrier oil, the essential oils above have been proven to relieve stress and induce calm feelings.

JANE SMITH SWAN MEDICAL AESTHETICS Dr. Jane Smith has been a physician in Raleigh since 1986, first in private practice in Internal Medicine then as a vein specialist in her own practice VeinCare of Central NC. As medicine evolved,Dr. Smith looked for ways to provide her patients with treatments for a broader range of problems.Over her 20 years as a vein specialist, her patients have observed her skill as she carefully studies their legs and skillfully handles the tiniest of needles and the instruments involved in complex laser procedures when treating varicose veins. OUR BUSINESS IS OPENING DOORS
When I think of autumn, I think of new pencils, new clothes and new classes - in short I think of going back school even though I am well past the age of considering it. But really, am I? I’m not actually. I have a brand new computer, comfortable clothes and am well aware of all sorts of ways to learn all sorts of things outside the traditional classroom. My friends, acquaintances and a few Facebook buddies, know what I am talking about. Here are just a few of them, sixty-five years old and older, and the “classes” they are taking.
• Beverly (literature) is active in the Jane Austin Society and leads an ongoing group of Proust, studying his books and the Belle Epoque; she even gets the group together for cocktails and dinner at a French restaurant. Beverly’s probably organizing a trip to France as we “speak.” • Janey (zoology) is learning all about dogs training them to escort the handicapped. Right now she is up in the hills of California, filling in at a national park. • Michael and Kate (religious studies, editing & marketing) help out at a food bank and lead a Bible study and church history group. They also edited and published the journals of Michael’s father, a merchant ship sea captain for forty-odd years - surviving a mutiny and voyages to South America and the Orient. Michael and Pat are busy people!

• Ginnie (biography) is writing a book about Margaret Fell, the founder of the Quaker religion, which has taken her to England and Pennsylvania, pouring through libraries and making friends with their research assistants. • Katie (geography, journalism) packs up and heads off with her little tent on the shore of Prince Edward Island every summer and the rest of the year writes a column for the local newspaper about what’s happening in her community.
• Bret (physics, especially G force) rides roller coasters all over the country. • Ellen (art) has formed Internet friendships with like-minded folks throughout the world who do all sorts of things, from painting on mini canvases to making greeting cards and then mailing them back and forth. • Karen (foreign language) is learning German. • Jean (urban planning) has done great things cleaning up neglected, historically significant areas in the city. • Jules (theater) belongs to a local theater group - being in on the action with like-minded folks. • Barbara (research) has poor health but also a laptop computer and an interest in genealogy, which leads her to social and political world events going on in her ancestor’s lives. Dan (history) hadn’t opened a book not related to work in 40 years. Now he’s hanging out at the library in the aisles concentrating on WWI. • Jennie (heath & physical fitness) rides a bike, swims and walks daily. Did I forget? She also mountain climbs once a year with her old college friends - all in their late seventies.

• Joan (botany) cares for her extraordinary garden and has been a real force in planting trees and creating pretty areas in public places around the state. • Gina (music) organizes a three-season concert series, going all over to hire musicians - then she fixes schedules, prints flyers and arranges for refreshments, ticket takers, ushers, the whole thing. • Dave (film) put together a “guy flicks” Saturday morning film group in his home, pancakes included. • Carol (archeology) has recently retired and is making an expedition through her attic. Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Mexican Modernism from the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection October 26, 2019 – January 19, 2020
Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Mexican Modernism from the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection presents the paintings of two icons of the 20th century. Few artists have captured the public's imagination with the force of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo (1907–54) and her husband, the Mexican painter and muralist Diego Rivera (1886–1957). The myths that surrounded them in their lifetime arose not only from their significant bodies of work, but also from their friendships (and conflicts) with leading political figures and their passionate, tempestuous personal relationships. While Crystal Hamm thought she was busy traveling throughout North Carolina as a banking executive, it was when she became a mother as well as a businesswoman that she realized what it truly meant to try to do it all! She founded Go 2 Girls in 2015 to help other women manage their busy lives by offering house cleaning and laundry services throughout Wake County. As if that initial goal wasn’t enough, Go 2 Girls also partners with The Helene Foundation and Cleaning for a Reason to provide free housecleaning services to mothers undergoing cancer treatments. The Helene Foundationspecifically serves families in North Carolina, in honor of Helene Davidian, a nurse and mother who lost her life to cancer in 2009. Families are sponsored for a six month period, receiving many types of assistance. Cleaning for a Reason has a similar mission of donating two free house cleaning services to women undergoing cancer treatment; they have partnerships all over the country.
GO 2 GIRLS
Providing personalized services to help busy women achieve balance in their lives, Go 2 Girls has quite the positive reputation! They’ve been nominated for, placed as a finalist, or won several awards, including the Indy Best of the Triangle Award for Best House Cleaners in Wake County in 2018 and Midtown Magazine’s Best House Cleaners in Raleigh Diamond Award in 2019. And yet the emblem on their website presented first is the “Proud Partner Serving Women with Cancer Cleaning for a Reason” logo. WRITTEN BY HEATHER S. PARSONS
PHOENIX (2015) A gripping, beautifully sculptured film, Phoenix begins at an American checkpoint in 1945 Berlin immediately following the war. Nelly, a former nightclub singer, her face swathed in blood-soaked bandages, waits in the car while her friend explains Nelly is a Holocaust surviver, her face shattered and now unrecognizable. The guard says he thinks Berlin would be the last place they would want to go. Berlin however is where Johnny, Nelly’s husband, still lives. But before she tries to find Johnny, Nelly checks into a clinic, telling the plastic surgeon she wants the face she once had back, even if it’s not exact. Her friend says choosing to look the same won’t resurrect her marriage. Johnny is the one who betrayed her to the Nazis. Even so, Nelly looks for him. Her face now somewhat altered, Johnny feels there is something about her that reminds him of Nelly. The film builds on that premise and its closing chapter takes your breath away and leaves you in silence.
BROOKLYN In 1951, in a small, pretty town on the coast of Ireland, the soft-spoken Eilis Lacey works in a shop run by a very unpleasant woman. Jobs are scare in Ireland, but in Brooklyn, New York, her sister tells her, they are plentiful for those who have an education and work hard to get ahead. In Brooklyn, Eilis is desperately homesick, though she makes the best of her new life, enrolling in a bookkeeping class and going to parish dances, where she meets a supremely cheerful young man who is crazy about her. Baseball games, Saturday night movies, and the beach and the amusement park at Coney Island -- Brooklyn is beginning to feel more like home. 3100 DURALEIGH RD SUITE 304, RALEIGH, NC 27612 (919) 781-2514 WWW.WAKERESEARCH.COM
However on a visit to her mother, Eilis falls in love with Ireland all over again. She walks along a quiet beach with old friends, receives an offer of a bookkeeping job, and begins a relationship with the son of a prosperous Irish family -- Eilis finds herself torn between two countries and two ways of life.
