Suntegrity Natural Mineral Body Sunscreen SPF 30
Let’s face it: sunscreen better be your summer (and year long) essential. But if you’re going to be swimming in the ocean, consider a clean and reef friendly sunscreen, like Suntegrity. Thislightweight facial sunscreen contains an abundance of wholesome plant-based ingredients, like watermelon, sea buckthorn, and carrot to help nourish and hydrate skin while shielding it from harmful UV rays, free radicals and pollution. • MyDayScreen.com
BEAT THE HEAT
END YOUR SUMMER BEAUTY STRUGGLES BY CHOOSING THESE HARD-WORKING PRODUCTS THAT WILL HELP YOU CREATE YOUR MOST RAVISHING LOOKS NO MATTER HOW HOT IT GETS!
Elta MD Tinted Sunscreen
Sunscreen is always important to protect your skin, but it’s even more critical in the summer when the days are longer and the UV rays are stronger. If you feel like your makeup is too heavy, try a tinted sunscreen that protects you while giving you the coverage you need. Elta MD’s tinted sunscreen glides on like a dream and is oil- and fragrance-free. You’ll get a flawless look and can even use it under your makeup if you prefer.
TOO FACED HANGOVER SPRAY
COLORWOW DREAM COAT SUPERNATURAL SPRAY ANTI-FRIZZ TREATMENT
ColorWow Dream Coat is the ultimate summer hair hack to prevent frizz from undoing your style. After washing your hair, use this anti-frizz spray to smooth it into position. You’ll have shiny hair that looks glorious no matter how high the humidity!
Time may march across your face eventually, but your makeup shouldn’t do that at any age. When it’s hot and humid out, this spray-on primer will give your skin a gorgeously smooth and pore-less look. It keeps makeup in place, no matter how sweaty you get, and it doesn’t leave your skin feeling suffocated.
ARMANI BEAUTY EYE TINT LONGLASTING LIQUID EYESHADOW
Just as likely, you may notice that the summer humidity makes your eyeshadow crease or disappear. Liquid eyeshadow by Armani Beauty is the ultimate answer. It’s a crease-proof formula that glides on and stays where you put it for up to 16 hours. You can easily layer it to intensify your looks too. The doe-foot applicator it comes with is easy to use to sweep colors across your lids.
RARE BEAUTY CREAM BLUSH
If you’ve noticed that your powder blushes disappear the hotter it gets, you’re not alone. Switching to a creambased blush is a better move in the summer, though the one you choose is crucial to not feel caked-on and heavy. Rare Beauty’s cream blushes are water-resistant and melt right into the skin for a soft and natural look. These versatile shades blend smoothly without caking, creasing, or clogging up your pores.
HI Anna, I was given a $500 gift certificate for mothers day and now lost on how to best use it. Would you recommend a facial and products? OR should I put it towards something bigger like a laser treatment or injectables? I am traveling this summer and Ideally, I would like to soften the lines and get a little color back!
Thank you so much - Jennifer
Hi Jennifer– lucky you! Someone special in your life knows what they’re doing! If you’re looking for a treatment you can do this summer, I’d recommend putting that giftcard towards injectables or PDO Threads for smoothing and lifting Botox® will forever be our holy grail when it comes to de-wrinkling. This treatment is quick with very minimal downtime: you’ll see brighter smoother skin after two weeks and these results will last three to four months. Botox® is great in the forehead, around the eyes or between the brows and can leave you with a more refreshed appearance. PDO Threads, on the other hand, can be used in many different places around the face and can help with smoothing the skin or even helping to add lift and structure. Threads have gained a lot of popularity in recent years, and for good reason! They are very well tolerated in the skin, with results lasting up to a year, and they even promote the production of your body’s own collagen as they dissolve. Both of these options have very minimal downtime and are safe to do during the sunniest months of the year! As always, the best thing to do is to come in for a consultation with an experienced medical provider so that we can customize a specific plan based on your skin. Enjoy! – Anna

WHISKEY KITCHEN
Location: Downtown Raleigh, 201 W Martin St.
This is arguably the prettiest outdoor patio in all of Downtown Raleigh. I’m in awe of the magical feel of the rows of rows of string lights every. single. time.
Besides having a beautiful outdoor ambiance, Whiskey Kitchen has the most delicious selection of food and cocktails. Not to mention an incredible whiskey selection of course. This iconic Raleigh restaurant has a very cool, hip feel. Hanging out on the patio makes you feel like a true local no matter how long you’ve been here!
MUST-HAVES:
The Fried Chicken Sandwich is a must. Leave room for dessert—you don’t want to miss the famous Shoo Fly Pie!”
WYE HILL KITCHEN & BREWING
Location: Downtown Raleigh. 201 S Boylan Ave.
If you’re looking for outdoor dining with incredible Raleigh skyline views and delicious eats, look no further than Wye Hill Kitchen & Brewing! I am so happy this spot came to be a few years back. The owners are absolutely wonderful and I love the passion they have for this local spot. This is one of my favorite places to bring friends visiting the Triangle. Who doesn’t love a restaurant with views am I right? I love Wye Hill’s fun, casual feel. Cozy vibes all year long. One try and you’ll be coming back all Summer!
MUST-HAVES:
Start with the deviled eggs for sure. Next, order the burger. Then wash it all down with one of their delicious brews. Repeat.
NAMU
Location: Durham. 5420 Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd.
Okay, I slept on this incredible spot for far too long!!! I am so glad I finally learned about it.
Where Korean Heritage, Food Truck Ingenuity, and the Local Community meet. Delicious Fare, Cold Brews, and Deep Roots.
One of my favorites things about Namu is how it is a great choice no matter time of day. They have a wonderful menu of coffee drinks from Cold Brew to Traditional Macchiatos to get your day started and a mouth-watering menu to enjoy in the garden. Yes, you read that right, GARDEN.
Namu’s patio is a beautiful oasis. So beautiful that they even host weddings! Enjoy fresh air and beautiful greenery as you sip a cappucino or devour Bibimbap.
MUST-HAVES: For my perfect lunch at Namu, I’d order an iced latte, Kimchi Bul-fries, and Bo’s Special!
EASTCUT SANDWICH BAR
Location: Durham. 3211 Old Chapel Hill Rd.
This neighborhood hangout is one of my favorite sandwich spots in the Triangle. I am always on the hunt for a great Chicken Parmesan Sandwich and this one is oh so good. Also, I have this thing with curly fries (I personally think they shouldn’t be so hard to come by, ugh!) so it is very exciting that they’re serving them up here at Eastcut Sandwich Bar.
Located close to Downtown Durham, this is a great casual spot to hang with family and friends before a day exploring the city! They have a large area of covered outdoor seating with a section that has water, utensils, napkins, etc. to prevent having to go in and out a million times to get everything you need. This is a wonderful option if you want something with a lowkey feel and lots of outdoor space! They’re also gluten-free friendly. We love to see it!
MUST-HAVES:
I adore their Chicken Parmesan Sandwich and curly fries. 10/10 recommend grabbing whatever frozen cocktail concoction they have as well!
PECK & PLUME
Location: Downtown Cary. 301 S Academy St.
Peck and Plume is where those of a feather come to roost. Peck & Plume, located within Mayton Inn in Downtown Cary, is where all my interior design dreams come true. I know we’re talking outdoor patios here, but I have to brag on their gorgeous interior. Definitely do a deep dive on their website to see what I’m talking about.
Here you’ll find a delectable menu delivering different selections throughout the day. Their focus is new American classics, but drawing inspiration from near and far. From morning through evening, their breezy terrace awaits.
MUST-HAVES: Mayton Inn Mimosas and the Duck Quesadilla. YUM.

This poignant tale explores the complexities of friendship, love, and the power of forgiveness, reminding us that sometimes the strongest bonds are forged in the heat of summer.
"LIES AND WEDDINGS"
BY KEVIN KWAN
"Lies and Weddings" by Kevin Kwan is a captivating novel that delves into the extravagant world of high society weddings and the secrets that lie beneath the surface. Set in the glamorous backdrop of Singapore, the story follows the lives of three interconnected characters: Rachel, a young woman struggling to navigate the complexities of love and family; Nicholas, a wealthy bachelor torn between duty and desire; and Astrid, a fashion icon grappling with the pressures of her picture-perfect life. As the wedding season unfolds, the characters find themselves entangled in a web of lies, deceit, and hidden agendas. From lavish parties to scandalous affairs, the novel explores the lengths people will go to maintain appearances and protect their reputations. With Kwan's signature wit and sharp social commentary, "Lies and Weddings" offers a satirical yet poignant exploration of the clash between tradition and modernity, and the sacrifices one must make in the pursuit of happiness.

THE BEST APPS TO ENJOY THE OUTDOORS
With warmer days comes a need to breathe some fresh air and touch grass. We’re not all outdoorsy, but we all must try to stay in touch with nature and the beautiful world around us.
Of course, today, technology can come along. In fact, quite a few apps can make your day outside more exciting and memorable. These are the best apps to enjoy the outdoors, whether camping or strolling in your local park.
HIKING PROJECT
When exploring unfamiliar territory, you’ll first need a map. Of course, all phones come with handy GPS tracking, but how good are they if you have no Internet connection? Here’s where offline maps come in. Hiking Project is a powerful map-based system with plenty of offline maps. It also identifies hiking trails worldwide, adding new ones every day. We’re sure there are already a couple of exciting trails near you. The best part? You can add your own trails and share them with the world.
CAIRN
STAR TRACKER
When venturing into the wildlands, safety is essential. Cairn is a dedicated app that will keep you safe wherever you are and, perhaps most importantly, help you return home safely. The Cairn app has several features, including safety tracking and alerts, navigation and cell coverage, even when off the grid. The app can let your loved ones know where you are and will notify whoever you choose in an emergency. Know where you are, where you’re going and how to return to safety, whether you’re exploring a dense forest or a high mountain.
SEEK
Seek, by iNaturalist, is a fantastic app with a beautiful interface. It is also your go-to app for when outside. Point the camera at living things, plants, fungi or animals and let it identify them, giving you all the information you need about the plants and creatures around you.You also earn badges for finding and identifying different species, gamifying your outdoor adventure. This app can identify millions of living things; yes, it is as fun as it sounds. It is available for iOS and Android.
If you’re staying out late and the sky is clear, this app will give you hours of entertainment. Point your phone to the sky and let Star Tracker identify stars, planets and constellations. This immensely satisfying handheld experience is best enjoyed away from the city’s bright lights, where you can actually see the vast universe above you.
Can you spot Mars? How about the International Space Station? Star Tracker is free but offers a PRO version with more features. This app is available for Apple IOS, Android and even virtual reality!
MAP MY WALK
After a long day outside, it’s time to check your mileage. Tracking your steps is a rewarding way of recounting your adventure. Map My Walk does more than count your steps. It will also track your routes, elevation, and pace. This app is perfect for professional and amateur athletes, especially those taking long, exhaustive runs, but it is equally helpful for anyone enjoying the outdoors occasionally. Give yourself some goals and crush them. After all, walking only fifteen minutes a day can significantly impact your health. What are your favorite apps for outdoor exploring?
5 APPS FOR FOODIE TRAVELERS
Food makes traveling exciting—so much so that some people travel just to try new and colorful dishes. Food is one of the best ways to get to know a country, its customs and its people. Food is often what makes a destination stand out, and that’s why there are so many foodie travelers—maybe you’re one of them!
Of course, traveling smart is all about knowing where to find the information you’re looking for, especially when figuring out where to have your next meal. Well, here’s where the best apps for foodie travelers come in. Have the following apps in hand and satisfy your cravings no matter your travel destination.
TASTE ATLAS
Taste Atlas is one of our favorite foodie projects ever. Think of a food encyclopedia curated and maintained by people around the world. Find the most popular dishes and drinks in every country and city, and read what they’re all about, with pictures! The website, which you can access as if it were an app, is also particularly good at ranking food based on people’s votes so that you can confidently choose your next meal. Did you know that the Brazilian Picanha steak is ranked number one globally? It ranks better than Neapolitan Pizza and Japanese sushi!
AIRBNB
LOCALEATS
Airbnb is an excellent alternative for cheap and often charming accommodation. However, even if you’re not staying at one of the app’s rentals, you still want to install it on your phone, especially if you’re a foodie. Why? Because of the experiences. Airbnb hosts offer experiences worldwide, many of which revolve around delicious food. From walking food tours to private chef dinners, from wine tastings to cooking lessons, they’re all wonderful ways of keeping the foodie inside you happy.
EATWITH
Talking about experiences, Eatwith is an app that lets you book private dinners, cooking lessons and other foodie activities, often in people’s homes. Experience local food with local people. That’s what we call authentic. Get to know chefs and food enthusiasts at every destination, make friends and learn more about local food and customs from the natives themselves. Avoid tourist trap restaurants and enjoy reliable food and beverages in one of many exclusive culinary experiences — they’re often cheaper than fancy restaurants, too.
LocalEats is an app that recommends restaurants in major cities worldwide. The app is clean and easy to navigate, and the information is fairly accurate. The company is growing as it adds more destinations, making it one of the best information/recommendation food apps right now. Although Local Eats is fantastic, it focuses heavily on restaurants in the United States, but there are others. The Fork is an excellent alternative if you’re exploring Europe, and Zomato is particularly useful when visiting India and South-East Asia. Needless to say, there is a restaurant aggregator for every region worldwide, so download the apps that work for you.
CHEFSFEED
Although finding restaurant reviews and recommendations online is easy nowadays, the source of such recommendations matters most. With ChefsFeed, you get to see what chefs in various cities and countries actually recommend. It’s not all fancy stuff; there are recommendations for every type of food, including cheap street-food goodies. The thing is, chefs value quality, creativity and authenticity, so their reviews and recommendations tend to be more on point than those on Yelp or many other review apps. Check it out and let the chefs guide you on your journey!

SESAME DRESSING
¼ cup rice vinegar
2 tablespoons tamari, more for serving
½ teaspoon toasted sesame oil
1 teaspoon grated ginger
1 garlic clove, grated
½ teaspoon maple syrup or honey
FORTHESOBANOODLES
6 ounces soba noodles*, see note Sesame oil, for drizzling
2 avocados, sliced
Squeezes of lemon
2 cups blanched snap peas
¼ cup edamame
1 watermelon radish or 2 red radishes, very thinly sliced
1/4 cup fresh mint leaves
Sesame seeds
INSTRUCTIONS
Make the dressing: In a small bowl, combine the vinegar, tamari, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, and honey. Set aside.
Bring an unsalted pot of water to a boil and cook the soba noodles according to package directions. Drain and rinse well in cold water. This helps to remove starches that cause clumping.
Toss the noodles with the dressing and divide into 2 to 4 bowls. Squeeze fresh lemon juice onto the avocado slices and add to the bowls along with the snap peas, edamame, radish, mint, and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Drizzle with more tamari or sesame oil, if desired.
SUMMERCORN SALAD
CHILELIMEDRESSING
(this makes extra)
¼ cup Sir Kensington’s Avocado Oil
Mayo or vegan Fabanaise
1 tablespoon olive oil
¼ cup chopped cilantro, including stems, plus more for garnish
1 tablespoon fresh lime juice, plus extra slices for serving
⅓ serrano chile, plus more to taste pinch of garlic powder
INGREDIENTS
3 ears of grilled corn on the cob
1 red pepper, diced
1 green pepper, diced
½ small cucumber, diced
2 ripe peaches, pitted and diced
1 small avocado, pitted and diced 8 basil leaves, thinly sliced juice of 1 lime, plus lime wedges for serving
3 tablespoons Chile Lime Dressing, plus more to taste sea salt
INSTRUCTIONS
Make the dressing: In a small food processor, combine the avocado mayonnaise, olive oil, cilantro, lime, serrano, garlic powder, onion powder and a few generous pinches of salt. Pulse until combined. Chill until ready to use.
Slice the kernels off of the grilled corn and place in a large bowl. Add the red pepper, green pepper, cucumber, peaches, avocado, basil, lime juice, a few pinches of salt, and toss. Add a few tablespoons of dressing, toss again, then taste and add more dressing and/or salt to taste. Serve with extra dressing and lime slices on the side.
DRESSING
1 tablespoon tamari
2 teaspoons fresh lime juice
2 teaspoons rice vinegar
1 small garlic clove, minced
½ teaspoon minced ginger
SALAD
3 heirloom tomatoes, sliced into wedges
5 cups cut watermelon (about 2-inch triangles)
1 thinly sliced jalapeño and/or a few Thai chiles
2 tablespoons Thai basil or regular basil
2 tablespoons toasted cashews
½ avocado, diced
Sea salt, to taste, if desired
Lime wedges, for serving
INSTRUCTIONS
Make the dressing: In a small bowl, combine the tamari, lime juice, vinegar, garlic, and ginger. Arrange the tomatoes, watermelon, and jalapeños on a platter or in a shallow bowl. (This salad should not be served in a deep bowl because the flavorful juices will sink to the bottom.)
Drizzle with the dressing and top with the basil, cashews, and avocado. Season to taste and serve with lime wedges.

February 24 – June 16, 2024
Chinese-born American artist Hung Liu (Born in Changchun, China, 1948 – 2021) portrayed individuals who risked being forgotten in death as in life. As a child, Liu lived under the regime of Mao Zedong, who led the Communist Party during the Cultural Revolution (1966 – 1976), a turbulent period of political and social upheaval in the People’s Republic of China. It was during this time that Liu realized photography’s significance when she witnessed her mother burn cherished family photographs, or otherwise risk persecution for being “bourgeois,” or not working class.

Hung Liu: Soci Living Memory
2001 Campus Dr. Durham, NC 27705 Museum info desk: 919-684-5135 nasher.duke.edu
As an adult, Liu immigrated to the United States, where she focused on the photographs of the Chinese people who came before her. By manipulating and recontextualizing found images by dripping, splattering, and layering materials, Liu blurred the lines between representation and abstraction and probed photography’s role in shaping collective memory.
Hung Liu: Living Memory explores the artist’s ability to bridge past and present by manipulating the threads of visual memory. Her sensitive portraits illuminate what it means to be Chinese, to be American, and to be a woman. These testimonials make visible the faces of the forgotten. Liu’s portraits remind us that memory is not merely a repository of the past; it is a dynamic force that inflects the past, informs the present, and shapes our future, forging our sense of self while connecting us to the greater human consciousness.
I PAINT FROM HISTORICAL PHOTOGRAPHS OF PEOPLE; THE MAJORITY OF THEM HAD NO NAME, NO BIO, NO STORY LEFT. NOTHING. I FEEL THEY ARE KIND OF LOST SOULS, SPIRIT-GHOSTS. MY PAINTING IS A MEMORIAL SITE FOR THEM.

LEVEL UP YOUR TRAVEL GAME.
WALK THE PATH LESS TRAVELED
With thousands of possible destinations around the world, it’s astounding that only a dozen cities, including Paris and New York, capitalize on most global tourism. However, popular destinations are rarely your best choice. For starters, the more popular a place is, the more crowded and expensive it will be. For most people, smaller crowds and lower prices are synonyms for a good time.
Forget about visiting the Big Apple; explore Massachusetts instead. Ditch Paris; instead, get lost in the streets of Madrid. Are you planning on a Caribbean holiday in Jamaica? Check out Curacao instead. You get the idea!
TRAVELING TIPS
FIVE TIPS THAT NOT EVERYONE TALKS ABOUT
BY
PHOTO
MARISSA GROOTES
GTRAVEL LIGHT
For most people, a carry-on bag is enough for a week abroad. If you travel with more than a couple of bags for quick trips, you might want to reconsider your priorities. More bags mean more discomfort, more time at the airport, and sometimes more money. Traveling light is not only more practical but also gives you a sense of freedom that will make your trip more enjoyable.
The more you travel, the better you become at mastering the art of packing light. Don’t know where to start? Get used to the idea that you don’t need the same comfort level you have at home when traveling; stick to the essentials — this might actually help you make meaningful changes in your lifestyle!
DITCH FANCY FOOD, GO AUTHENTIC INSTEAD
Regarding authenticity, expensive food is hardly more authentic than comfort food sold on every other eatery and street food stand. Restaurants in popular destinations are, more often than not, tourist traps. Rest assured, you can eat and drink the same items around the corner for a fraction of the price.
When in doubt, follow the locals and do some research before takeoff. For many, food is a critical part of their travel experience, so spend so time choosing the best alternative — great food doesn’t have to be pricey, in fact, it seldom is. If a meal is lavish, it’s probably overpriced.
HONE YOUR NAVIGATION SKILLS
When traveling, you might know where you want to go, but chances are you don’t know how to get there. What’s the cheapest, safest and fastest way to get from one place to the other within a city, a country, a continent?
By planning your routes and researching means of transport for your adventure, you will save time, avoid feeling stressed, and ultimately avoid getting lost or spending more money than you wanted. Download offline maps, purchase train and bus tickets beforehand, and know how you’re moving around in a destination before you’re there..
LESS IS MORE
Tours around Europe have always been prevalent. So have many other plans that involve visiting a dozen cities, sometimes in different states or countries, like touring Japan’s most popular cities or cruising the US east to west. After all, you want to see, live and experience as much as possible during your holidays, right?
Well, that’s not always the best plan. Choosing a destination thoughtfully and getting to know it well can be more rewarding than knowing a handful of places superficially. Instead of trying to see it all, choose a destination and really get the feel of it.
