POWDER PINK

Every year, a few colors steal the spotlight and this year, powder pink is going to be a major trend for spring 2025. Southern women love to wear pretty and feminine pieces and this color ties in perfectly with that aesthetic. Georgia Tardy Art is a fine art, apparel, and art education studio. GTA’s company focus is to inspire people to cultivate their creativity and live out an authentic expression of their life.

The title of the exhibition, The Time Is Always Now, references an essay on desegregation by American writer James Baldwin (1924–1987). Organized around three themes—double consciousness, the persistence of history, and our aliveness— the exhibition showcases works by artists including Michael Armitage, Jordan Casteel, Lubaina Himid, Kerry James Marshall, Wangechi Mutu, Toyin Ojih Odutola, and Amy Sherald.

This collective assertion and interest in figuration and representation, examining both the presence and absence of the Black figure in art history, transcends geographical boundaries. Through their work these artists invite a shift in the dominant art historical perspective from “looking at” the Black figure to “seeing through” the eyes of Black artists and the figures they depict.

Skip the chicken salad, and make chickPEA salad instead! This creamy vegan sandwich filling contrasts perfectly with crisp veggies and soft baguette.

CHICKPEA SALAD SANDWICH

BEST EGG SALAD

When I say “best,” I mean it. Made with Dijon mustard, lemon, capers, chives, and dill, this egg salad is fresher and more flavorful than any other version I’ve tried. If you don’t eat eggs, swap in crumbled tofu to make it vegan.

INGREDIENTS

¼ cup mayonnaise

1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil

2 teaspoons Dijon mustard

1 teaspoon capers

1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice

1 small garlic clove, minced

¼ teaspoon turmeric

¼ teaspoon sea salt

Freshly ground black pepper

6 hard boiled eggs, diced

Pinches of celery seed

2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill

2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives

INSTRUCTIONS

In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, olive oil, mustard, capers, lemon juice, garlic, turmeric, salt, and several grinds of black pepper.

Mix in the eggs, then stir in the celery seed, dill, and chives. If desired, lightly mash the mixture if it's too chunky. Chill until ready to serve..

FORTHECHICKPEASALAD

1½ cups cooked chickpeas, drained and rinsed

2 tablespoons tahini

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

½ garlic clove

1 teaspoon capers

1 green onion, chopped

2 tablespoons chopped cilantro

2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

FORTHESANDWICHES

handful of thin green beans, trimmed 1 soft baguette, sliced in half

8 to 10 Kalamata olives, pitted and sliced in half thinly sliced red onion, rinsed and dried vegan mayo (or regular mayo), for spreading ¼ English cucumber, thinly sliced

1 radish, thinly sliced

6 to 8 fresh basil leaves

sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

INSTRUCTIONS

Make the chickpea salad: In a food processor, combine the chickpeas, tahini, Dijon mustard, garlic, capers, green onions, cilantro, lemon juice, and pinches of salt and pepper. Pulse until combined, but do not puree. Season to taste. Blanch the green beans. Bring a small pot of salted water to a boil and place a bowl of ice water nearby. Drop the green beans into the boiling water for 1½ minutes, then scoop into the ice water to stop the cooking process. Once cool, drain, pat dry, and chop into 1-inch pieces. Assemble the sandwiches: Spread the chickpea salad on one side of the baguette. Press the chopped green beans into the chickpea salad and top with the olives and red onion slices. Spread of layer of mayo on the other half of the baguette and top with the sliced cucumbers, radishes, and basil. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Press together, slice, and enjoy!

4 (3.5-inch) Focaccia squares, sliced in half

Handful of arugula

1 (8-ounce) fresh mozzarella ball, sliced

2 tomatoes, sliced

1/3 cup Roasted Cherry

Tomatoes, optional

Pickled Onions, optional Basil leaves

Extra-virgin olive oil, for drizzling

Flaky sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

INSTRUCTIONS

Assemble the sandwiches on the focaccia with the arugula, mozzarella, and tomato slices. Add the roasted tomatoes and a few pickled onions, if desired.

Top with basil leaves, a drizzle of olive oil, and season with salt and pepper.

Notes

For a vegan version, use sliced avocadoandaslatherofvegan pesto in place of the cheese.
