Addie was fabulous! One of the best decisions we made was hiring Addie as our month of coordinator. She took a lot of the stress away. She contacted all of our vendors and put together a very detailed itinerary for all the vendors to follow and know when and where to be. She offered many helpful suggestions to help things run smoothly. We ran into some surprise bumps in the road with my husband’s family during rehearsal and she handled them like a charm to keep everyone happy. I couldn't imagine having done everything without her. I would recommend Addie to any future brides. She helped to make my day the fairy tale I dreamed of! It was perfect!! — Regina S.

Tell us about yourself and your journey to North Carolina. I was born and raised outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by two lawyers. When I was growing up, my dad was the district attorney of our county, which explains my interest in criminal law. I think I watched my first murder trial when I was 13-years-old. My mother was a family lawyer, so I also learned a lot about domestic violence and emotional abuse and control from her.
nationwide but still very much local - styling raleigh since 2002 -
I went to Duke University and majored in English and minored in psychology. During my senior year, I interned at WTVD in Durham and decided that I wanted to pursue a career in broadcast journalism. I got my Masters Degree at Northwestern in journalism and then started my career at a small radio station near my hometown. In order to get my first television job, I loaded a box of résumé tapes and two dry cleaned suits into my car. Armed with a AAA map, I drove up and down the East Coast, about 2,500 miles, knocking on news directors‘ doors. It finally paid off—my first job was at WPDE in Florence, South Carolina. I was based in the Myrtle Beach bureau and was a one-man band, which means I did everything – shot my own video, edited it, wrote the story, and presented it on air. I got the chance to do a little bit of everything – reporting, producing, and anchoring. But I knew even at that time that my first love was reporting from the field on breaking news.

My second job was in snowy Portland, Maine. There, I got a chance to cover a lot of snowstorms, but also many other interesting stories including criminal investigations, cases, and trials. I came to WRAL in 1994 and quickly fell in love with the area. I also fell in love for real, and ended up marrying a southern man and decided to start a family. So, while my plans had been to eventually get back to a television market in the Northeast, my life happened here when I least expected it.

My new book is called Dead Last. It is being published by Light Messages out of Durham. I have nine published books already; they are all non-fiction, but this is my first novel. I have written three true crime books based on murder cases I have covered for WRAL. I have also written four memoirs, three on parenting, one on caregiving (about my mother’s battle with brain cancer), and two children’s books. My newest children’s book is called We Are Not The Same and That’s Okay and features the work of the Tammy Lynn Center. That is also due out this spring. I have always wanted to write a mystery based on some of the experiences I have had over the past three decades as a television reporter. The story is born completely out of my imagination, but obviously borrows from real events. I am an avid runner, so it begins with the protagonist running a race. She comes face-to-face with a woman who gets injured and has a potentially tragic backstory. The main character, Maddie Arnette, has recently retired from crime reporting, but can’t help herself from getting pulled back into the rabbit hole again.
Can you give us “taste of your Triangle” experiences, past and present? (Such as favorite places to go, places you miss that are no longer here, new places you like to visit and memories that still shape who you are? )

This is a tough one because I have been here for 26 years. But I was here before downtown Raleigh was what it is today. I can tell you that I am amazed at the energy and the life that has been infused into some older neighborhoods and buildings.
It’s really remarkable and exciting to see! We love going downtown to have dinner, or to go to a show or a concert. Twenty-six years ago, you just wouldn’t go downtown I’m very happy to see Raleigh coming alive. The next best thing about our area is the fact that there are so many places to walk, bike, and run. One of my favorite places is Umstead Park. I have spent a lot of time there over the years hiking, running, and biking. We really are lucky to have so many beautiful trails and greenways all over the Triangle. Now, to have Dorthea Dix Park right in the middle of this growing city, is simply amazing.
Could you share a few words of wisdom as a mom, juggling the roles as mother/journalist/writer? I don’t know if I have any wisdom per se. It’s not easy by any means. I guess my process has always been to triage. There are moments when you prioritize work, and moments when you prioritize family, but knowing that family always trumps work in the end. I’ve always tried to make myself available to my daughters no matter what else is going on. I’m taking calls about the tooth fairy while I’m waiting for a murder suspect to come in front of the magistrate. I’ve helped locate sneakers or dance clothes from a courtroom during a trial. I’ve made doctors’ appointments, filled out school forms, and managed emotional crises with my kids in between everything else. I think mothers are really good at scheduling their time - we are efficient and work smart. I also think because I have always worked, my daughters have grown up to be very strong, independent young women. That being said, there are some things I missed, which I regret. I didn’t have a job where I could ever go to anything after school, including games when they participated in sports. On the flipside, I have always been heavily invested in their activities, traveling
with my older daughter for volleyball on the weekends and going to dance competitions for many years with my younger daughter. So there’s no magic wand – it’s a balancing act that changes by the day, sometimes by the hour.
Who are some of your inspirations? Who do you look up to and why? Honestly the biggest inspirations in my life have been the women in my family. My paternal grandmother went to college and had a job in the 1920’s. She wore pants, sang loudly, danced with abandon, and loved everyone unconditionally before that was in vogue. My mother, who passed away in 2012, showed me the value of hard work, the importance of building a tribe of women friends, and introduced me to the belief that you should always lead with kindness. She was strong, brilliant, wickedly funny, and interested in everyone she met.
Describe the perfect day off for you. A day off? What’s that? For me it would be on the water. Our family loves going to the beach and spending time together on a boat. These days with such busy lives, it’s hard to make that happen, but when it does, it’s magical for me.
Any other hidden talents that you’d like to share? I’m a force to be reckoned with when it comes to Scrabble, although my Words With Friends‘ opponents might disagree. I have become a proficient paddle boarder. It’s one of my favorite things to do...to head out on the waterway on my paddleboard, listening to a podcast. I can disappear for hours! I have a fantasy of doing stand-up comedy someday. I’d like to explore this at some point. Someday!
Do you have any advice for aspiring writers who are just starting out? Just do it. Join a writing group. I’ve been part of one for 20+ years. Share your work with others and let them critique you. Set time aside to do it every single day. Writing a blog is a good way to exercise the “muscles.” It’s not unlike anything else: like running or tennis, you have to practice. I am currently working on launching a true crime podcast for WRAL. It’s a very exciting process that involves a different kind of writing. It has helped me exercise and gain new writing skills.
What do you love the most about being in North Carolina? I think what I love the most about North Carolina is the genuine kindness of the
people. Having grown up in the Northeast, people were not quite as open as they are here. I have seen such compassion from individuals and also communities in the way they help others and especially come together in times of crisis. I feel like it’s been a great place to raise my kids. Selfishly – I love to be outside and North Carolina offers me the opportunity to do that almost year-round. It sounds cliché, but we have the beach and the mountains and many beautiful things in between. I’ve traveled a lot, and I always come home to North Carolina, appreciating what we have here. I have lived here longer than I have lived anywhere else and it is truly home to me now. No matter where else I may journey, North Carolina is my home. •••

As we exit the old and enter a new decade, the spring 2020 fashion report reveals a portrait of time travel featuring signature trends throughout the past century. 30s: Polka Dots Move over Minnie! Polka dots won’t be seen as a juvenile print this year. We’re seeing spots elevated in all colors and sizes, and on a range of ensembles — from everyday casual tees to wedding-friendly cocktail dresses.

50s: Shirt Dress Both work and weekend-friendly, the shirt dress keeps getting reinvented and we are here for it. This season’s shirt dress is as wide-ranging in details as it is versatile; you’ll see it in mini, midi and maxi lengths and with details like buttoned-slits, cinched or baggy waistlines, asymmetric features and even worn belted over pants.

90s: Neon

Move over single color trends like Millennial Pink and Gen Z Yellow. This season multiple highlighter hues make a daring return. Not for the faint of color, you can tip-toe into this trend by pairing these vibrant shades with neutrals like black, white or tan. For an even more subtle look, opt for a neon accessory instead.
60s: Psychedelic Prints and Textures More is more! Psychedelic 60s-inspired wallpaper prints, tie-dye (but make it fashion) and crochet textures were all spotted on the S/S 20 runways, proving that maximalism is alive and well.
70s: Wide Collars Wide, pointed statement collars appear on coats, shirts and blazers, with many designers using contrasting colors to really showcase exaggerated lapels. For the button-down shirt version of this trend, designers style their emphasized collars by pulling them out from under blazers, jackets and trench coats, which goes against the tucked-in approach we’ve gotten used to.
80s: Bermudas and Chain Links Bermudas go the business route this season, with the shorts making a return as part of suiting, which suits us fine for our hot Carolina summers. Combine this trend with another S/S 20 favorite — the oversized chain link necklace. 30 | triangle style

The Past Decade: Tiered Maxi Skirts and Dresses Have we been influenced by the flamenco dancer emoji? Or maybe it was Gemma Chan’s look at last year’s Oscars: a Valentino gown constructed in horizontal layers of hot-pink silk? Tiered maxi skirts and dresses are the it-silhouette of the spring. These light, lovely, flowy frocks offer maximum twirlability and wearability. Pair skirts with a simple tee or button-down shirt with high fashion results.

And they’re looking to change the way people view beauty — from the inside out. So, while you’re busy spring cleaning this season, we recommend emptying that pantry of yours for some better-for-you alternatives designed to help treat everything from damaged skin to stress to blue light damage and much more! — Kimberly Arnold

Its decadent blend of CBD and botanicals help promote a peaceful calm, sharpened focus, and a balanced mood, making it the perfect drink to start out your day. • AncientNutrition.com
Touted as the first-ever “ready-to-drink anti-aging skincare”, Cocera Skincare’s “28 Day Kit” is our idea of gorgeous skin in a bottle. Why? It helps restore skin’s youthful, radiant look by reducing the appearance of aging from within. Along with anti-inflammatory niacinamide and antioxidant-filled retinol, its innovative formulation features hydrolyzed collagen to strengthen skin’s elasticity and ceramides to help protect the skin’s barrier and retain a healthy moisture level. With that said, Cocera's delicious mango-orange flavored vial a day just might keep the dermatologist away –– seriously! • CoceraSkincare.com or Amazon

Swisse Wellness Women’s Ultivite Multivitamin and Ultiboost Immune Forte If you ask us, every comprehensive approach to overall wellness should include a daily multivitamin and a supplement to support our immune systems. That’s why our top picks for spring are these daily women’s health multivitamins and immunity support tablets. Both formulations contain complementary blends of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and adaptogenic herbs that work hand in hand to support a range of wellness needs –– like energy, stamina, stress, and immunity health. What’s not to love?! • Swisse.com or Amazon
Swell Skin One & Done Moisturizer Sea Buckthorn Oil While we seriously wouldn’t recommend digesting most facial moisturizers, this 100% sea buckthorn-based facial oil is a much-welcomed exception to that rule. The potent superfood contains plenty of skin-loving omega fatty acids, as well as vitamins A, C, and E to help revitalize skin so you can glow from head to toe. • SwellSkin.net or Amazon
Heliocare® Daily Use Antioxidant Formula Capsules Most notably caused by the things many of us love in life ––sun and alcohol–– free radicals can cause or worsen skin damage at a cellular level. And since we can’t avoid the sun for obvious reasons, Heliocare is the next best thing to staying indoors. An antioxidant-filled daily supplement, it’s key in protecting skin from the harmful oxidation process. So, you can finally enjoy the sun with Heliocare® (and SPF), of course. • Heliocare.com or Amazon
Moon Juice Magnesi-Om If you haven’t incorporated magnesium into your daily wellness routine yet, you’re missing out! This particular supplement comes in a palatable berry-flavored powder to help promote relaxation and healthy brain function, as well as reduce muscle aches and mild bloating during PMS. Did we mention it helps keep you regular? Talk about holy grail status! • MoonJuice.com or Sephora
Youtheory Ashwagandha
Eyetamins™
Let’s face it: the digital age has us constantly glued to all sorts of tech gadgets. But with it comes eyestrain and even blue light damage. Created by board-certified neuro-ophthalmologist Dr. Kaushal Kulkarni, MD, Eyetamins™ are the first of its kind eye supplement that helps minimize the impact of harmful blue light and promote eye health with a blend of potent ingredients, like vitamins C and E, zinc, saffron, European bilberry, and more. Needless to say, it’s a musthave for every human who owns a cellphone, right? • Eyetamins.co or Amazon
Good news: you can finally keep calm because ashwagandha has your back. While it may not be the sole solution to addressing stress, it could serve as part of a well-rounded approach. After all, the adaptogenic herb has been praised for thousands of years for its ability to help reduce stress by managing cortisol levels. And if you’re dealing with that unwanted cloudy haze that can often accompany worry, ashwagandha may be able to help ward it off. • Youtheory.com or Amazon spring | 37

BEAUTY HACKS
Apply lemon juice to counteract itchiness No need to worry with hydrocortisone cream or ugly calamine lotion the next time you get an itchy rash. Just pour some straight lemon juice on a cotton ball and apply to the area. It will sooth the itchiness quickly.
FIVE WAYS TO USE
LEMONS IN YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE
Use lemon juice's natural bleaching action to create blonde highlights Mix ¼ cup lemon juice with ¾ cup water to make a rinse for your hair. Apply the mixture to your whole head or spray in sections. Then go soak up the sun while your hair dries. It's a subtle way to lighten your hair so you may need to do it more than once to achieve your desired coloring. Be sure to wash the lemon juice out afterward to avoid drying out hair.
Lighten and strengthen your nails Mix a tad of lemon juice with a little olive oil and massage into nail bed and cuticle area. Let it sit for a few minutes and then wash it off. You could also mix lemon juice into warm water and soak your fingers for a few minutes. Either way works. It will clean your nails while strengthening them too. 40 | triangle style
Combat blackheads with a lemon facial Rub a freshly cut lemon across your acne prone areas and wait a few minutes. Then rinse with cool water. The alpha hydroxyl acid in lemons helps to unclog pores and exfoliate the skin.
Use it to fade freckles and age spots Put some lemon juice on your undesired markings and allow it to sit for about fifteen minutes. Then just rinse it off. Lemon juice works rather well as a skin lightener. Plus, it's safe and a lot less than anything else. Just don't go out into the sun immediately afterward.

I DO TO GET RID OF IT FILLER, LASERS?— JENNIFER CAN
Hi Jennifer! Thanks for your question! While Botox is amazing at wrinkle-relaxation, it isn’t always enough to correct pesky, deep set lines. Luckily, there are plenty of other solutions that can work in tandem to address this concern! First things first, I’d recommend getting assessed by one of our skin experts to understand the underlying issue. My guess is that one of two things is happening: either the wrinkle in question is at the skin level (whereas Botox targets the underlying muscle) or the underlying muscle is not completely able to relax, despite the Botox. If you’re dealing with the former, superficial etchings in the skin can usually be improved with a laser resurfacing treatment like Halo or a resurfacing peel like a Jessner. However, if the wrinkle is still present because the underlying muscle is not responding to the Botox, then I’d come in for a consultation with our Double Board Certified plastic surgeon to learn about some slightly more invasive options to address the concern. Lastly, and most importantly, keep up with your Botox! The more frequently and consistently you’re treated, the less powerful that creasing muscle will be so that you can prevent further etching in of movement lines. Hope this helps!

The old idiom, “runs like the wind,” applies to many women, but especially multi-marathon runner Jennifer Solomon. This working mother of three embarked on the most challenging year of her life as she faced a slew of international races that took her around the world:
The 777 Seven Continents, Seven Marathons In Seven Days!
JENN
RUNS THE WORLD
It was only a few years ago that Jennifer ran her first 5K, but after some encouragement from friends and family, this one time smoker, at the age of 47, is just hitting her stride.

Tell us about yourself. I grew up in Massachusetts and lived there my whole life until I moved to Raleigh in the summer of 2018. I have an identical twin, Jannelle, and I miss her the most! We lived only three miles from each other in MA. I have two sisters and three brothers, who all live up north. I have three children: Tori is 23, an ABA teacher, and recently graduated from Merrimack College: Peter is 20 and is a Junior at Salem State University (both live in MA); and my daughter Rachel, 14, with Cerebral Palsy, is a 9th grader at Rolesville High School. I work at VitalSource as a Senior Director of Market Development in downtown Raleigh. That’s a fancy way of saying I manage a few sales teams and help grow our company footprint in education. We provision digital learning materials at an affordable price on day one of class. I have a Bachelor of Arts from UMass-Boston. I'm 47 years old, quit smoking in 2009, and I can’t believe I am a runner - I was not an athlete at all as a kid!
What was it that made you start your journey into running? My friend Kim Gold started running (we’ve been friends since college). She talked me into training for a 5k, then a 10k, and then I ran my first half marathon with her in May of 2014. Our first 10K was in October 2012, and I spent so much time weaving in and out of other runners that when I saw Kim at what I thought was around mile six, I was so excited to be almost finished. Kim let me know we were still about a mile from the finish line. That was also the first race I really hurt after...the good kind of hurt. Where you can barely walk.

What was one of the most difficult races you’ve run so far? For sure it was the 2018 Boston Marathon. It was my worst time and it was pouring rain. We’re talking buckets of rain! I ran into some Miles for Miracles teammates, and we finished together. When I took the right on Hereford and saw the sea of ponchos on the ground, then the left on Boylston and could see the finish line, I was uncontrollably crying. I was so relived and proud to be done. It was the longest 5:45:52 ever!

How do you keep going when your body is telling you to stop? I’ve run many races for Boston Children’s Hospital. My daughter, Rachel, has been a patient there since before birth. She has cerebral palsy and uses a walker to walk. My other kids, Tori and Peter, have also had different health challenges. I run for them, and they are so proud of me. I can see the love in their eyes when I cross a finish line. Not finishing a race is never an option, and when I think about what the four of us have gone through together, running a marathon is easy.
How do you manage training and kids as a single mom? I am a good juggler and flexible about how I fit it in. If the plan calls for 10 miles on a weekday, I’ll get up at 4:30 am, be out the door by 5 am to run five miles, then come home and get Rachel up for school. Put her on the bus for 6:30 am, and then I go back out and run another five miles. During this last training cycle, I had a sitter come a few mornings a week when the miles were over 10, and I couldn’t fit it in and get Rachel on the bus.
What are your “choice” running shoes? Brooks Levitate with Super Feet insoles. Tell us the best places to run in the Triangle. I cannot believe all the greenways here! I run on them all the time. They are everywhere and oh so handy! For the early morning runs, I run the streets of Rolesville. It’s well lit and safe.
What are your favorite songs to listen to when running? I have so many

but here are few: “Titanium” by David Guetta (it reminds me of my daughter, Rachel, and it is always a welcomed “pick me up” when I am struggling!), “Brave” by Sara Barielles, “This is Me” by Kaela Settle, “If I Dare” by Sara Barielles, “Girls Like You” by Maroon 5, “Centuries” by Fall Out Boy, “People Like Us” by Kelly Clarkson, “What Are You Waiting For” by Nickelback, “Iris” by The GooGoo Dolls, and “Lose Yourself” by Emenim.
How do you soothe sore muscles? My newest gadget is the Muscle Gun by Harmony. I even bring it to work. I also see Ashley at Results Physiotherapy, and she fixes me
right up. She has been helping me get stronger so I have less aches and pains. After any run longer than 15 miles, you can usually find me soaking in a hot bath with lavender Epsom salts and drinking the latest local stout I’ve discovered. I love trying new creamy stouts, and I reward myself with a post run beer.
Can you share your eating secrets when training and not training? I eat everything when I’m training, and I eat many times a day. I think I’m hungry from the time I get up until the time I go to bed. I eat lots of eggs and cheese. I also usually have a PB&J for any run over 15 miles. Otherwise I would starve!
FI ND YOUR NEW SHADE
Do you have any rituals that you do before or after a race? I don’t really have any rituals. I do lay out “flat” every night before a race. I write a race plan so that I don’t have to think about all the logistics, such as getting to the start line, what I will eat, and what time to wake up. All of it! Otherwise, I’ll waste a lot of energy thinking about it. This is something the Miles 4 Miracles coach, Jeff, told me about for my first Boston Marathon. That said, my favorite numbers are three and four, and I get so excited when those numbers are in my race bib. For 777, I will have the number 34!
Do you come across the same people when running? Yes, while running the Majors you see a lot of the same people. (The “Majors” are Boston, New York, Chicago, Berlin, London, Tokyo.) It was weird to go to an international marathon and have friends from the States there.
How many sneakers do you burn through in a year? Usually four to five pairs. In 2019, I went through nine. When Brooks started advertising for the new Levitate, I bought seven pairs of the Levitate 2 on Amazon because I was so afraid I wouldn’t like the new model. Thankfully, I have one more pair left to take with me around the world! I am going to try to use the same pair of shoes for each marathon. I’ll bring a backup pair, but I’m hoping to make it work.
Tell us about the 777. The experience was the best experience of my life. In Antarctica it was -12F and in South America it was 96F. I was able to push myself in ways I never imagined possible

CURRIED RED LENTIL HUMMUS
V E G A N P I M E N TO CHEESE DIP
BABA GANOUSH INGREDIENTS
INGREDIENTS
1 cup dried red lentils ¼ cup smooth tahini 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 2 tablespoons melted coconut oil 2 garlic cloves, peeled ½ teaspoon grated fresh ginger ½ teaspoon cumin ¼ teaspoon coriander ¼ teaspoon turmeric ¼ teaspoon cardamom ¼ teaspoon onion powder ¼ teaspoon cayenne ½ teaspoon sea salt freshly ground black pepper Water, if necessary, for consistency Naan and/or cut vegetables, for serving INSTRUCTIONS
Bring a medium pot of water to a boil and add the lentils. Reduce to low and simmer, covered, until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and let cool for 15 to 20 minutes, then transfer to a blender with the tahini, lemon juice, coconut oil, garlic, ginger, cumin, coriander, turmeric, cardamom, onion powder, cayenne, salt, and several grinds of pepper. Blend until creamy. If the mixture is too thick, add water, 1 tablespoon at a time, to blend into a creamy consistency. Taste and adjust seasonings. Chill until ready to use.
Serve with naan or cut vegetables, as desired.
2 medium eggplant ¼ cup tahini 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, more for serving 2 garlic cloves ½ teaspoon sea salt Finely chopped parsley, for garnish Pinch of smoked paprika Pinch of red pepper flakes, optional Pita and veggies, for serving INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat the oven to 400°F and wrap the eggplant in foil. Roast the eggplant for 50 to 60 minutes, or until it is soft and collapses to the touch. Remove from the oven and set aside. Once cool to the touch, peel the skin from the eggplant, removing any big clumps of seeds. Place the flesh in a strainer over a bowl and let stand for 20 minutes to remove excess water. Place the eggplant flesh, tahini, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, and salt in a food processor and pulse until smooth. Transfer to a serving dish, sprinkle with chopped parsley, smoked paprika, and red pepper flakes, if using.
Serve with pita and veggies. Note: For a more traditional, smokier baba ganoush, cook the eggplant on the grill (no foil), until the eggplant is very soft and charred all over. Remove the charred skin and continue with the recipe instructions.
INGREDIENTS
1½ cups raw cashews ½ cup water, more if needed to blend 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon sriracha 2 tablespoons jarred pimento peppers, more if desired 1 garlic clove ½ teaspoon smoked paprika ½ teaspoon salt Freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon chopped chives, for garnish INSTRUCTIONS
In a high speed blender, combine the cashews, water, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, sriracha, pimento peppers, garlic, smoked paprika, salt and a generous pinch of pepper. Blend until smooth, using the blender baton to help keep the blade moving. If the mixture is too thick, gradually add more water until smooth. Chill until ready to use. Garnish the dip with the chopped chives and serve with crackers, celery, and radishes for dipping.
Serve with naan or cut vegetables, as desired. Serve with:Crackers Sliced vegetables (radishes, celery, or veggies of your choice) spring | 67
Great Reads THE BOOK OF DREAMS by Nina George
Four lives are intertwined, relationships formed, and love explored in this final look at life, death, and everything in between from the author of The Little Paris Bookshop. Quietly meditative and exquisitely plotted, there is nonetheless a feeling of urgency to the story, as the days pass with each turning of the page. The living make life altering decisions while the almost dying experience alternate paths showcasing what life could have been. By the final chapters, a lyrical crescendo is building, leading to a dramatic conclusion and a graceful coda, so that while, similarly to life, there is no guarantee of a happy ending, no one is left bereft at the end of the tale. The Book of Dreams shines light into the hidden spaces of each character’s soul.

What You Missed in 2019 With the hustle and bustle of everyday life, blaring news cycles, and something new to catch the attention around every corner, it would be easy to overlook these titles that came out in 2019. Yet not reading them would be a mistake, as they offer meditations on life and death, illustrate prejudice and kindness, and make simple life lessons relevant today. From climbing Everest to singing with Fred Rogers, there’s a little something for everyone to enjoy in these books you might have missed last year. — BrocheAroe Fabian, owner, River Dog Book Co., riverdogbookco.com
RISING: BECOMING THE FIRST NORTH AMERICAN WOMAN ON EVEREST by Sharon Wood
Sharon Wood, the first North American woman to summit Everest, reflects on her groundbreaking achievement, on the sport of mountaineering, and on the subsequent 30 years of personal and relationship development. Written lyrically about the harsh natural environment and with unflinching honesty about personal growth, Rising illustrates how social connections and support systems – essentially relationships of all kinds – can have lingering effects and shape the path to success.
THE BOOK WOMAN OF TROUBLESOME CREEK by Kim Michele Richardson
Based on the true story of the Pack Horse Library Project which operated in the Appalachian Mountains in the 1930s and 40s, and inspired by the real life “blue people” of Kentucky (a family with a recessive gene that led to methemoglobinemia, a medical condition that turned skin blue), this historical fiction novel follows the life of Cussy Mary Carter - outcast for her blue skin, determined pack horse librarian. Written by a proud Kentuckian, everything from the dialect to the flora and fauna to the family dynamics is fiercely evocative of a time and place still visible today.

A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD: THE POETRY OF MISTER ROGERS
by Fed Rogers, illustrated by Luke Flowers
The show “Mister Rogers’s Neighborhood” ran from 1968 to 2009, encouraging generations of children to learn about their feelings, talk through their problems, and fall in love with the world a jolly little trolley would bring them to. Fred Rogers wrote every piece of the show himself, from the topic to the music used, including the beloved songs collected in this treasury. Beautiful pieces of poetry in their own right, accompanied by colorful illustrations that draw you into the imagery of the poems, offer a walk down memory lane or an introduction for a new young friend, PERFECT FOR AGES 6 AND UP.

INSPIRATIONAL STORIES OF LOCAL MOVERS AND SHAKERS
GROWING UP IN THE HISTORIC MARCUS B. DRY HOUSE IN CARY, Amanda Duncan truly experienced small-town American life. She muses, “Decades ago, everyone in Cary was connected or had the ability to connect with others to support those in the community. This environment offered my parents an avenue to provide me with a solid education, safety, and opportunities for community service. Our family did not have disposable income so I was taught to appreciate the wealth that comes from exploring and engaging with my environment. Cary taught me the beauty of simplicity. Despite her happy childhood and adolescence, Amanda would face many challenges in her adult years. In 2017, she found the courage to leave an abusive 16-year marriage.

72 | triangle style
She reflects, “It was a very controlling relationship and I didn’t have the financial means to support myself or my two sons when I asked for a separation. I had no higher education to fall back on, no previous employment history, and I had to learn how to navigate a world that was not designed to support and encourage someone like me. I was starting traditional adulthood almost 20 years late, without a college degree, and with the added challenges of being financially, emotionally, and spiritually responsible for not only myself but my two children as well. Then and now, I continuously feel naive, gullible, and behind. However, overcoming is about seeing every obstacle as a two-sided coin. What that relationship stole from me, it also gifted me with learning the power of patience, resilience, and forgiveness. It also taught me to make peace with being a work-in-progress.” Amanda decided to start a laser-cut leather jewelry business, that she named Simply Adorned 79, out of necessity. “It was a soul-crushing experience to be so hopeful about starting over and instead having to be dependent on welfare services. I knew I would have to create my own future. It took every last drop of hope I had to start SA79. I began applying for artisan markets, learned how to build and maintain a website, and made as many connections as possible. I slowly built my business piece by piece, one step at a time. Simply Adorned 79 began to morph into an integral part of my life that I currently cannot live without; it’s a true business. SA79 became my extended family comprised of amazing customers, boutique owners, and other local artisans who have allowed me into their lives. They are my muses and inspirations for designs. I love that I am a small yet ever present part of their day.”

CRE ATE GRE AT ACCENT WALLS WITH A VARIET Y OF COLORS, TEXTURES, AND PATTERNS.
Wallpaper has seen a resurgence in popularity over the last couple of years, which has given homeowners new options with their dĂŠcor. The right choice of wallpaper can make almost any room appear upgraded and trendy. However, you need to know what styles, patterns, and colors look best in which areas of a home.
Horizontal Stripes:
Vertical Stripes:
This type of wallpaper can cause a small space to look more substantial than it is by making a wall appear longer. Horizontally striped wallpaper looks fabulous in a laundry room, for example. Choose a light background such as white or beige and then choose a stripe color such as pale yellow or peach or even a soft blue. The more subdued the color, the more serene your space will feel.
In your master bedroom, you can create a gorgeous accent wall behind your bed with vertical-stripped wallpaper. Use it directly behind the mattress only and all the way up to the ceiling. The stripes will make your room look like you have ultra-high ceilings, and your bed area will instantly become the focal point in the space. Choose two coordinating colors to match with the rest of your dĂŠcor for the best result.

Angular Geometric Pattern: To improve the look of a powder room, try a triangular or rectangular pattern on a lightly colored background. Such a design fools the eye into thinking more space exists in the powder room because it draws attention upward. This design trick will work exceptionally well if you use the wallpaper on the upper half of the walls and then add beadboard to the lower half of the walls all the way around the room.
EXCEPTIONAL REAL ESTATE SERVICES
MANAGE. RENT. BUY. SELL . INVEST
Circular Geometric Pattern: Create a dramatic accent wall in your dining room using wallpaper with a circular pattern. Circles are the newest rage in dĂŠcor for anything from throw pillows to wall patterns. Try wallpaper with a lovely beige background and random gray, brown, and cream-colored circles in the design to produce a sophisticated look that will leave all of your guests in awe.
Leaves and Flowers: Create a lovely accent wall with wallpaper that displays leaves and colorful flowers. Small floral designs look best and won't overwhelm the look of the rest of the dĂŠcor. Pink and green flowers will result in a gorgeous appearance as will beige and green or yellow and white. Choose a pattern with only two to three colors, so the wallpaper doesn't look too busy.
Wooden Plank Design: Hang wallpaper that looks like wooden planks behind the desk in your home office. You'll create a warm and classy feeling in the room without the expense of real wood. Place some wooden bookcases on each side against the wall to enhance the appearance of the wallpaper.
WHEN KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & SUPERIOR SERVICE COUNTS
Textured Suede: This superb choice of wallpaper will look stunning in a formal dining room. The soft, smooth texture will create a perfect accent wall and add a sophisticated touch to your décor. Choose a solid color such as tan, gray, or rust. Or you can select a design with an intricate pattern for added interest and style.
Textured Brick: Recreate the fabulous look of natural brick with wallpaper. Choose one small wall space in your kitchen for the accent. If you only wallpaper a small space, the faux brick pattern will make more of a visual impact than if you overdo the look. You can install floating shelves on the same wall to enhance the appearance and display a few kitchen accessories. Or try placing a metal or wooden holder against the wall where you can keep a few pans within easy reach.
Galaxy of Stars: Enhance one wall of a childs room with starry wallpaper. Place it on the wall opposite the bed and include a couple of lamps on side tables or
floor lamps on each side to make this wallpaper shine. Your child will love admiring the stars from their bed.
Bold Graffiti: Many teenagers love the look of graffiti. They can now have it in their room with graffiti wallpaper. Choose the smallest wall in the room to display these bold, colorful patterns. Many styles and designs exist that your teen can choose from for their bedroom. Stimulating graffiti art wallpaper makes a bold statement that will draw everyone's attention as soon as they see it Wallpaper makes the perfect accent in almost any home. You can use it to change the entire look and feel of a room. No matter the style of your décor, wallpaper exists that can enhance your interior at a reasonable cost. Try it in one area first as an experiment, and then add it throughout your home if you love the look. You can often do small wallpapering jobs yourself. For larger jobs, hire a professional to get the best look possible.

Spring Cleaning SPRING CLEANING DOESN’T HAVE TO BE HARD WORK, TRY THESE SIMPLE TRICKS FROM A PRO. CLEAN UP CEILING FANS: If your ceiling fans have been still all winter, they may have collected dust. If you don’t have an extendable duster, use a pillow case. Slide it over the blade and gently wipe all the dust into the pillow case. Once you’ve finished cleaning all the blades, just throw the pillow case in the wash. To get your blades extra clean, use a damp microfiber cloth after the dust has been removed.
FRESHEN UP YOUR SHOWER CURTAIN: Freshening up your shower curtain is easy. No hand scrubbing needed, just throw it in the washing machine with a few towels. The towels rub again the shower curtain liner and get it sparking clean.
GIVE YOUR MICROWAVE A STEAM CLEANING From spatters to hard stains, the inside of your microwave can turn into an unsightly mess. You don't even need a scrubber to clean it, however. Put two cups of water in a bowl, add some white vinegar, some essential oil and half a lemon. Run the mixture in the microwave for five minutes on high heat. The steam from these ingredients should loosen up the gunk well enough to make them easy to wipe down with a sponge.
GET THE GRILL CLEAN Spring is here which means it’s grilling time! To make sure your grill is up to the task, get it nice and clean as early as possible. Heat up the grill, and cut a large onion in half. Stick a fork into the back of the onion, and rub the cut side of the onion back and forth on the grill bars. You'll find the onion's juices clear up the accumulated dirt in no time.
USE YOUR DISHWASHER FOR MULTIPLE THINGS Your dishwasher does more than just the dishes. It can clean a variety of small plastic and metal items. From soap dispensers to showerheads and drawer pulls, there's so much you can wash in the dishwasher. You only need to throw it all in and wait for sparkling results.
pros picks Magic Erasers can clean almost anything in your home including faucets, sinks, toilets, showers, bathtubs, and baseboards. They really are magical!

Zentangle Drawing with Sayaka Sayaka is a Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT). CZTs are professionally trained and certified by Zentangle Inc. The Zentangle Method is a form of drawing using structural patterns, the different patterns are called tangles, which can be lines, dots, curves, simple shapes or whatever you feel. The combination of simple shapes is what creates the Zentangle. These patterns are often created on small sheets of paper which act as tiles that can be combined to form a mosaic. Zentangle drawing is used for meditation, creative expression, relaxation, and to create calm through focusing attention. The art is drawn by relaxing the hand and allowing the mind to clear, and creativity to flow from you and onto the page. As you draw you rotate the sheet, keeping your hand relaxed and continuing to draw various patterns. This course requires no artistic background and is for all skill levels. Classes are held on Saturdays at Health Touch North Carolina in Durham. The course lasts from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM and the cost is $25.

PERMANENT EYELINER Fabulously Flawless // (919) 637-2554
What makes Fabulously Flawless Permanent Eyeliner so popular and what does it do? The majority of our clients ask for permanent eyeliner because it saves all the time it takes to apply eyeliner every single day. It gets exhausting! Now, you can wake up in the morning ready to go and don’t have to worry about makeup smudges after showering, exercising, or swimming. Many women struggle to pencil on eyeliner due to vision loss, unsteady hands, or arthritis, so having permanent makeup creates the freedom of ease. We create a natural or a dramatic eye, and women love that they can choose the look of their desire!
What can be expected from this treatment (any pain, side effects, recovery time)? While it varies by person, some clients report minimal pain. We use a safe topical anesthetic to minimize any discomfort during the procedure. Ultimately, it depends on the individual client and the proper application of topical anesthetic. Permanent cosmetics are completely safe when done by a reputable artist following all recommended safety precautions. The pigments used for semi-permanent makeup have a very low rate of allergic reaction among clients even if they have allergic reactions to normal makeup. As an additional precaution, we perform a test run before any procedure if an allergic reaction is in question. General recovery time after an eyeliner procedure is 2-3 days.
84 | triangle style
Clients may experience puffy eyes and eyelids and some light bruising after the procedure, but other than that there’s no downtime.
What is the average cost of treatment? Depending on the client’s specific needs, prices for permanent eyeliner range between $250 and $500. In fact, permanent makeup actually costs very little compared to lifelong daily makeup expenses! It’s important to know that many of our clients come seeking corrective procedures from a poor job done elsewhere. Needing multiple procedures to remedy issues ends up costing clients more money. This is why it is so important that a client is choosing the right Certified Permanent Cosmetics Professional, regardless of the price.
What are your clients saying about it? Most of our clients love their permanent eyeliner because it resolves so many issues. It cuts down on their makeup application time and keeps them from struggling to apply eyeliner evenly or worrying about running and smearing. Fabulously Flawless Permanent Eyeliner is just such a great investment in yourself!

Redefining Space. One Room At A Time.
the right space ...use what you have.

The-Right-Space.com therightspace2016@gmail.com : stephanie finucane :
WRITTEN BY LOU SCOTT Almost every article I read about staying young says it’s important to keep on learning. Crossword puzzles, bridge, mathematics, foreign languages are the sorts of things usually right up there on the recommended subject-list; yet if I understand this principle correctly, it’s the effort, not the subject matter, that actually counts—the same kind of effort it takes to prepare for a marathon. Not exactly perhaps but nonetheless the experts tell us persistent mental exercise means a stronger as well as a more flexible brain. I enrolled in Russian. Oh give me a break you might be thinking along about now. But wait--I signed up because my teacher was a dynamic and interesting person with lots of stories to tell. No, I most definitely did not have the slightest interest in learning a whole new alphabet nor in doing something I would probably never master. At that stage in my life I didn’t care one little bit about increasing my neurons. But as time went by, I fell in love with the passion and the emotional density of the language. Still, there was also a practical side to having something this difficult to work on for the rest of my life and to consequently feel a growing instead of a waning sense of accomplishment. As it turned out, the work I needed to put in became a lifesaver of sorts. Whenever it was raining, I was forever waiting for an appointment in a doctor’s office, or I was stuck in an airport waiting for another plane from who knows where to replace mine, my

Russian book was there too--tucked neatly inside my little black Barnes & Noble book carrier, along with the portable book holder I had bought to go with it. And quite often I put my grammar book on the table in front of me while I was having a bite to eat, leaving my hands free for a good hot cup of coffee. It has been many years now since I first began Russian and I can tell you it has been no easy going. Learning to write the alphabet, trying to understand the grammar has been hard work. But each year that I go through my book, I do it with increasing ease. Even after all this time, though, I am not by any means a natural at the language. But I don’t care. I am simply not going to psych myself out by believing anything else than this is going to be a lifetime avocation. That so nicely let’s whatever pressure I would have otherwise given myself completely off the hook. What’s even better is that most everyone thinks it’s admirable I am attempting it at all. (I can tell by the look on their faces.) A few years ago, when I was laid up in bed and didn’t have enough energy for the kind of concentration it takes to read a novel,
I tried propping up my grammar book on a tray, glanced at it for just a few pages at a time, and sometimes, sometimes not, distracted myself by watching Russian films with English subtitles and intermittently listen to my Russian tapes playing in the background. I discovered something very interesting: I felt as if I was getting somewhere without having to get up and walk around. I also learned the value of having someone else with whom to study; luckily for me, I have found a neighbor who is very particular in trying to teach me to “sound like a Russian This language has in truth become my friend and dependable companion. Whenever I pick up my book, I am so very pleased with myself--especially since high school French was not exactly high on my achievement list. But now, as time goes by, it’s not how much money I earn, the state of my wardrobe, or my appearance I am overly concerned with. Somehow, learning a second language oddly helps to center me and even better, it always makes me smile. •••

OVER AND OUT You know it's time to get off the phone, only you're stuck trying to figure out how to say goodbye. After all, you don't want to sound cold, hurried, or rude, especially when the person on the other end seems to want to keep the chat going indefinitely. Ending a conversation, whether verbal or digital, can be tricky, but there are ways to do it smoothly, effectively, and without offending your fellow conversationalist. Give these eight ideas a try and see how easy it is to signal over and out.
90 | triangle style
Summarize the Key Points for Closure Summaries aren't just for papers and reports; they're a great way to end a conversation and give it closure. Recap the important points of your exchange and all that you accomplished. If a particular goal was reached, be sure to mention it. By giving a short summary, you'll show that the discussion was fruitful, served its purpose, and is ready to wrap up.
Suggest Another Conversation If it's clear you can't get everything accomplished during this conversation, suggest another day and time to continue the talk. You'll assure the other party you'll be back in touch, plus it's a sensible way to conclude and move on. Think someone else can better assist with the next conversation? Conveying the idea can be the perfect segue to saying goodbye.
Give Thanks There's no nicer way to end a conversation than with a sincere thank you. Show gratitude for any information you received during the discussion that's been helpful. Even if you didn't solicit advice or assistance, saying thanks for another person's time and listening ear is always appreciated and an effective cue that the conversation has run its course.
Acknowledge the Time Time is precious, but losing track of it is easy to do, especially when two or more people are busy sharing their thoughts and opinions. By pointing out the minutes or hours that have passed, you're not being rude but rather helping everyone keep to their schedules. You'll be surprised at how your effort to end a conversation can pay off for others too.
Extend a Warm Gesture Offering a handshake, paying a compliment, or bestowing a useful item may be all you need to indicate the end of the conversation has come. The recipient will feel good about your gesture and you'll part ways on a positive note. If you're conversing digitally, a friendly emoji, like a smiley face or heart, can be just the ticket to finishing up with a cheerful, uplifting tone.
Interject with "On That Note" Ending a conversation can seem impossible if you can't get a word in. This is where a short, interjecting comment like "on that note" comes in handy. The expression has been used by many to conclude a conversation, and it's a clear alert that it's time to move on. Follow up with a closing comment or thought for later reflection to give the conversation finality.
Take Advantage of Newcomers Waiting for another party to join your conversation? It could be your lucky break. Once the newcomer jumps in, take advantage of his or her arrival and contribution to the conversation and slip away naturally. Using other people to help you make a smooth exit may seem selfish, but you can reciprocate when the opportunity presents itself during a future discussion.
Be Truthful When all else fails, you may be faced with stating directly that it's time to end the conversation. Just avoid being apologetic or rambling on with reasons why. Instead, use honesty to express your need to get off the phone or leave the room. As long as the sentiment is communicated kindly, humbly, and truthfully, it'll be received with understanding and respect.
Ending a conversation isn't always easy, but with a little thought and strategy you can make it smooth and painless for everyone involved. Give the effort your full attention; you'll be appreciated for your ability to say goodbye with grace. spring | 91

"We are excited to offer a renovated look at our restaurant that has been home to so many memories with our guests. We look forward to sharing their special celebrations and milestones with us for years to come,” Daley said. “My brother and I have had the pleasure to build relationships with our guests over the past two decades and we look forward to meeting new members of the Melting Pot fondue family!" Giving Back to the Community To celebrate and introduce the Raleigh community to the new design, Melting Pot of Raleigh is partnering with Kay Yow Cancer Fund, a local non-profit organization whose mission is dedicated to supporting innovative ways of fighting all cancers that affect women. "We are so appreciative of the Melting Pot for their support of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund," said Stephanie Glance, chief executive officer for Kay Yow Cancer Fund. “We are committed to awarding grants locally to make a significant impact in the lives of women and families across the state of North Carolina and are grateful for the support of local businesses that join us in serving our community. Cancer is a disease that impacts every family, but together, we can make a difference and change lives." For more information about Kay Yow Cancer Fund, visit kayyow.com.
TASTE OF HOPE GALA RAISES OVER $126,000 FOR INTER-FAITH FOOD SHUTTLE The 2020 Taste of Hope Gala benefitting Inter-Faith Food Shuttle was held Sunday, January 26 at the Renaissance Raleigh North Hills Hotel. A festive crowd gathered to enjoy the evening which featured a six-course dinner prepared by local chefs, exciting live and silent auctions, a wine pull, and a paddle raise to benefit BackPack Buddies-the Food Shuttle's signature program to help eliminate childhood hunger. All told, the evening's fundraising efforts raised over $126,000 to support hunger programs for the organization. The Master of Ceremonies for the event was Ken Smith, anchorman and reporter at WRAL. "We are grateful for the generosity of our community that supported the 26th Annual Taste of Hope Gala. The support provided enhances our efforts to make sure our most vulnerable neighbors; children, families and seniors have food, a critical basic need I might add, to lead an active and productive life," says Bethann James, Interim CEO of the Food Shuttle. FRENCH DESIGNER, LISETTE LIMOGES COMES TO CT WEEKENDS In mid-November, Montréal-based fashion designer, Lisette Limoges, stopped by C.T. Weekends boutique in Cameron Village to present her latest spring looks during a trunk show.
Her pieces feature stretchy fabrics, tummy control, and easy-to-wear pull-on cuts. They’re available in solids and prints and many feature embellishments like jewels and embroidery.
Lisette launched her line of figure-flattering pants after seeing a need that had to be filled. She noticed that women could either look stylish and be uncomfortable, or be comfortable but look frumpy.
During Lisette’s visit to Raleigh, she donated a large amount of clothes to Interact. Interact provides sexual assault and domestic violence services in Wake County.

WRITTEN BY HEATHER S. PARSONS BOYHOOD is not a remarkable story but it certainly is a remarkable film. What gives the film an authenticity and a force it might not otherwise have had is that it was made over twelve years with the exact same cast, seeing them age onscreen in front of us. The film is ostensibly a coming of age story about Mason, a six-year old boy, we follow from the time he is in elementary school until he goes off to college. But it is a coming of age story for his parents as well. After they divorce, Mason’s father, played by Ethan Hawke, moves to Alaska, whereas Mason’s mother stays behind - juggling bills, work, college, and taking care of Mason and his sister. Mason rides his bike, makes new friends, faces bullies at school, and with his mother and sister leaves his old home behind. It is these ordinary but universal events of childhood that seem a startling rewind of your own. But if you, like Mason’s mother, have raised a child, the scene at the end is your life too.

THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL - may not be to everyone’s taste but it sure was to mine. A silly, confusing, and delightful farce, the plot, whatever there is of it, is loosely wound around Gustave H, an overzealous concierge, and his lobby boy, who, in the waning days of a fictional first class hotel, high up on top of a mountain somewhere or other, between the first and second world wars, are involved in a disputed will, art theft, a chase over the mountains, and a great escape. I don’t see how the cast; Ralph Fiennes, Tony Revolori, Ed Norton, Adrien Brody, Willem Defoe, F. Murray, Bill Murray, Jude Law, Tom Wilkenson and Tilda Swinton, and so forth, had anything other than a “grand” time making this film. GRANTCHESTER - Set in an English village, not far from Cambridge, this new PBS Mystery is about Sidney Chambers, an extremely good looking young rector who drinks whiskey, likes jazz and is in love with his childhood sweetheart who is reluctantly marrying someone else. Because people “tell Sidney things,” the chief inspector solicits his help without expecting Sidney to reveal his source.
