ANNA LAUREL ABC 11 WTVD’S NEWS ANCHOR
There’s more to WTVD’s Anna Laurel than meets the eye. She’s a small town girl with a big personality and huge dreams that she wasn’t afraid to live out. Working her way from one coast to another, Laurel has made a name for herself all over the US and finds herself back in the heart of the Triangle, and in thousands of homes reporting the news every day! With a witty sense of humor and boundless energy, this southern girl is more than just a pretty face, she ‘s the whole package! We caught up with Anna (literally!) to find out more about what brought her home, a few of her beauty secrets and what she LOVES about the Triangle. TS: TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF. AL: I was born in Memphis, Tennessee where my dad was in seminary. I have two brothers and seven nieces and nephews all under the age of 9 and I’m the favorite aunt, of course! (At least according to me!) My dad is a Southern Baptist pastor so we lived in several places growing up from Upstate New York, to back where my family is originally from in South Carolina. My parents watched a lot of news when I was a kid. My dad would take trips overseas, so we were interested in what was happening around the globe even though we were in a small town in New York or South Carolina. That’s where my big worldview came from and I think my interest in broadcast journalism. I also come from a long line of really good storytellers. Southerners tell the best stories! So now I get to tell other people’s stories in the places that I live. TS: SHARE WITH US YOUR "PATH" FROM WHAT YOU WANTED TO BE GROWING UP, TO HOW YOU GOT WHERE YOU ARE NOW. AL: My first job was in Missoula, Montana. From there I went to Phoenix, AZ and then to Fresno, CA. I really love the West, but when I got a call from the News Director at WTVD ABC 11, I knew I would soon be back in the Southeast. My dad pastors at a church in Rocky Mount, NC and I was thrilled to get to be close to them. I recently married about a year and a half ago. I didn’t have a real wedding and a lot of people don’t know this about me, but we decided on a Wednesday to get married that following weekend! My husband, Steve, moved to Raleigh from California and when we were dating, I lived in Fresno. He bought a place not too far from me outside downtown, but by the time he was finally here, I didn’t want to be apart from him any longer- so we got married! The first person I called was Cydney English at The English Garden. Even though it was just going to be at my parents’ house with my brothers, sister-in-laws, our nieces and nephews and two dogs, I still wanted to have beautiful flowers. I didn’t tell people because I thought it would seem like a shotgun wedding! We will eventually plan a larger celebration- but I still need to get a wedding dress! (laughs) TS: WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THE TRIANGLE? AL: I love the anticipation and energy in Raleigh. The anticipation of something great, cuttingedge, and new about to happen. I love that there’s this Silicon Valley thing going on here without Silicon Valley prices! I also adore all of the small businesses I patronize

FROM PERSONAL TO PROFESSIONAL , ANNA LAUREL HOLDS HER OWN WITH SOME PRETTY AMAZING GUYS.
- some a little too regularly! (You know who you are Moon & Lola, Nite Kitchen, Barre3, and DRESS). I love that I can be at my grandmother’s house in South Carolina for coffee and breakfast on a Saturday morning. And I love that I’m less than an hour from my parents and brothers. In the Triangle, you can find something cool to do pretty much any time. TS: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR MOST FAVORITE MAKE-UPS, HAIR PRODUCTS, ETC? AL: Roi Parker at Roi Parker Salon in Cameron Village does my hair. Actually, he is a “Hair Whisperer”! I use the hair products he created like the best hairspray in the world, “Butch It Up”. Really, I love all of his stuff. And he sells these amazing brushes that are made in London. They give you the best lift! I use all natural makeup from Zethina out of Phoenix, AZ. I was never really a hair and makeup girl so it’s all a wing and a prayer for me. I find what looks and feels good and is easy and I go with it. The best beauty secrets are: Confidence and happiness...and sleep, which I don’t get enough of! TS: YOUR JOB ENTAILS A LOT OF STRESS! WHAT DO YOU DO TO UNWIND? AL: To “unwind”? What’s that (laughs)? My husband says I never unwind. I’m a ball of energy! Is it weird that I like to clean to unwind? Not countless hours of cleaning, but I like things to be neat and organized and to get it that way relaxes me. I LOVE hot yoga. That’s probably my happy place to unwind from stress. I usually go to Indigo Yoga on Oberlin or 110 Yoga in downtown Raleigh. And I love going to Barre 3! Being in a class with other strong, beautiful rock star women with some great music is so inspiring.
TS: WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE SUMMER? AL: My husband always plans fun weekend getaways. New York City was the only place on the East Coast he ever visited before he moved here. So we are having fun exploring! We are trying to hit as many beach towns as possible so we’ll see where that takes us this summer. We have a fun trip planned to the Caribbean. My family typically does a week on the Isle of Palms in South Carolina and I do an annual hiking trip with my girlfriends - this year we are going to Jackson Hole. We do a hot weekend with friends in Phoenix every July then hike in the mountains where it’s cooler, and hit a spa before heading home. I also plan on eating a lot of ice cream this summer!
Pink Magnolia Offers A Southern Chic Atmosphere With All The Current Trends In Clothing, Jewelry & Accessories
TS: ANYTHING ELSE COMING UP THIS YEAR FOR YOU? AL: My main focus is moving into the new house my husband built for us. My mother is an interior designer so it will be fun to nest in our new house with her help. I’m excited to go to Green Front Interiors and pick things out. I want to take my time and make it perfect. TS: CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT ANY BEHIND THE SCENES BLOOPERS? AL: Now with Facebook Live and so much social media, we don’t have too many behind the scenes bloopers- it’s all out there in the openthe good, the bad, the hilariously funny and the downright ugly. My co-anchor, Joel Brown and I do Facebook Live before the 4pm newscasts and a lot of times when I watch those back, I roll my eyes at myself! But there are so many ridiculous, wild, hits and misses just to get a story on the air sometimes. It really is the magic of television sometimes. At my first job in Montana, I shot my own video and I had absolutely no clue what I was doing. I did entire interviews without hitting the record button, or with the microphone off, and one time my battery died while I was interviewing a senator and I just kept doing the interview as if my camera was on because I was too embarrassed to tell him my battery was dead and I didn’t have another. When I think backthere are maybe more bloopers than actual smooth days. TS: WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR UP AND COMING NEWSCASTERS? AL: My advice for up and coming newscasters - be willing to go anywhere. After I graduated from the University of South Carolina, I sent my resume tape all over the country. A station in Meridian, Mississippi and Missoula, Montana called me for a job. I picked Missoula and had the best experience personally and professionally. I’m so glad I didn’t try to stay in South Carolina, or even pick the place closest to home. Everyone’s journey is different. You are a better journalist if you are well rounded and can understand and empathize with the people and the situations you are covering. Living life helps you do that. So go out there and live it! TIPS AND TRICKS
eyelook one If your glasses make your eyes look smaller, opt for this brightening eye-opening look. 1. Apply a brightening base (matte or shimmery) shadow all over the lid. For light to medium skin tones, choose a bone or beige shadow to apply all over the lid. For tan to deep skin tones, choose a camel or brown eyeshadow. 2. Choose a slightly deeper, preferably matte, shade to subtly deepen your crease. Be sure to blend this shade, so there are no harsh lines. 3. Apply a lighter shimmery shade in the very inner corner of the eyes to attract more brightness to the eye.
4. (Optional) Apply a white or flesh-tone eyeliner pencil to your waterline. This will open your eyes even more. I highly recommend skipping a black eyeliner for this look it will close the eyes more and make them appear smaller. 5. Curl your lashes and apply a volumizing and lengthening mascara, which will open your eyes and make them appear larger. 26 | triangle style

Finding eye makeup that best compliments your features can be difficult when you wear glasses. They tend to emphasize dark circles, the lenses are constantly hitting your lashes and leaving marks, and they can even make your eyes appear smaller or larger due to the lens type. While there's no set look for glasses wearers, your customized look will depend on a few factors: your natural eye shape, whether or not your glasses make your eyes appear bigger or smaller, and if your frames cover your brows.
WITHOUT THE ATTITUDE OR STICKER SHOCK
effortless style
EYEBROWS If your frames conceal your brows, you could skip defining your brows or use a quick defining product, like Tarte’s Colored Clay Tinted Brow Gel. If your glasses hit right below your brows, I recommend filling them in with a brow cream, pencil, or pomade, such as Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Dipbrow Pomade or Brow Definer for a bolder, framed look.
UNDEREYE Because glasses cast a shadow of darkness under the eye, you’ll want to use a corrector to neutralize any dark circles. Follow with a concealer that is two shades lighter than your foundation to bring the under-eye back to a flesh tone, but with an added brightness. Be sure to set your under-eye concealer with a setting powder to prevent creasing throughout the day. Recommended tools: Brushcraft, made by the creators of Artis brushes, and Furless Cosmetics make cruelty-free and synthetic brushes that blend flawlessly and are less of a breeding ground for bacteria than animal hair brushes.

eyelook two This look is not only great to transition you from your day to night makeup, but it is also suitable for anyone whose glasses magnify their eyes and make them look bigger than they are. 1. Repeat Steps 1-3 from the previous look.
2. Take a darker shade than the crease shade you used to deepen the outer corner of the eye. Start by applying this eyeshadow close to the roots of your lashes on the outer corner of your eyes. Create a V shape with your brush by blending the shadow close to the root of the lashes and crease on the outer corner of the eyes. Apply this same shadow under your bottom waterline with a smudge brush. 3. If you want to deepen the look even more, repeat Step 2, but add a black shadow into the outer V and blend. 4. Next, take your favorite black eyeliner pencil and line your waterline. As an optional step, you can also tightline, which is the method of applying your liner to the upper waterline. This will intensify the look and make your lashes look even longer. photo by Ian Butts of Noon-Day Studios

5. Curl your lashes and apply a lengthening mascara and brush out any clumps. For a more dramatic look, opt for false lashes.

ADORE Designer Resale Boutique owner, Nancy Alinovi, simply adores fashion! Originally from New York, she started out in the jewelry industry. In the 80’s, Alinovi quickly discovered her passion for dressing up for work by day, and then transforming her look for the NY nightlife scene. She cultivated many of her original outfits from finds that she mixed together from consignment, thrift and retail stores. Alinovi knew then that the consignment business was for her “because,” she explains, “I cannot stand being wasteful and have always loved fashion.”
Alinovi’s customer base is as diverse as the collections in each of her two Triangle locations. She is proud of the fact that, “the crazy thing with us is that we do NOT have a typical customer.” In both her North Raleigh and Cary boutiques, shoppers of all ages - from the Triangle and beyond - have learned to ADORE themselves. “We have something for everyone,” Alinovi delights, “We have people who spend thousands and people who just come in for a small purchase from the $9.99 rack.” She also has a steady stream of clients who love to shop at ADORE for their special occasion outfits; from proms to charity events. In addition to offering her clients access to high end to brands sold at department stores, (think Louis Vuitton and Chanel,) Alinovi is proud to say, “I think our claim to fame is the ADORE team. We have such a varied and devoted bunch of people who work for us.” Alinovi gushes, “Mary Lou and Allison were with us before we opened our doors many years ago.” Jackie and Kelley have also been working with Alinovi for years, along with Bianca, Timeka, Nicole, Kristen, Taylor, Jackie, Beth and Callie who are also admired members of the ADORE staff. “Each gets to know customers in
"All the great customers I have gotten to know over the past eight years." - Allison " I love getting to know all our consignors and customers!" - Mary Lou "I love working with the customers to find clothes for an event or just to fit their lifestyle and figure." - Kelly “I love seeing customers walk out of the store with smiles on their faces and packages in their hands!" - Jackie "My favorite thing about ADORE are my amazing coworkers and boss!" - Bianca
THE ADORE TEAM
WE ASKED THE TEAM AT ADORE WHAT THEIR FAVORITE THING ABOUT WORKING AT ADORE...
"My favorite thing about working at ADORE is making displays and all the great clothes I find." - Kristen "Working for ADORE is working for family and I couldn't ask for a better work environment." - Taylor "I love introducing customers to high end quality without the high end price. - Nicole "Love being able to offer top quality items for adorable prices." - Timeka "I love being able to go to school and still have a job that always helps me to learn so many brand names and styles!”summer - Callie | 31
their own way,” Alinovi explains, “Our employees are more than just that, they are like family and most have been with us for years.” ADORE clearly loves their customers and “regulars” know that they can count on them to go the extra mile. Alinovi and her team can even “find certain items for customers and will notify them when we do.” ADORE is a great place for newbie consignment buyers, and sellers, to get in the know. Alinovi highlights, “Clothing sold second hand has been proven to be cleaner than clothes bought at retail and the savings are ridiculous.” It’s not just good for your wardrobe game and your wallet, it’s also great for the world; resale shopping is the ultimate in recycling! And unlike conventional retail, many pieces come with an “interesting” provenance and a tale or two! Alinovi and her team are always reliably discreet and confidential, but hint, “Lets just say we have had gowns that have been to presidential inaugural balls, and some clothing that can be seen on some very influential people in the
New Society pages. Early on we sold a coat that came from the infamous storage spot that Paris Hilton forgot to pay for.” Any day is a great day to stop by ADORE! However, their annual Bling Night on Thursday evening, August 10th, is not to be missed! In addition to offering wine and their popular ADORatinis, that evening they will be featuring a sale on all regular jewelry and introducing a new jewelry collection. They will also debut new line of ladies' self defense items, as well as have Pink Moon Wigs and Extensions on hand to let customers explore changing or enhancing their looks. Local TV personality, stylist, and entrepreneur April Clark will also be there to help style and offer tips to attendees. RALEIGH: BRENNAN STATION

Hi Anna, I am finally ready to tackle the lines around my lips! I had a friend who had a Restylane filler and another friend who had Botox and honestly both look pretty much the same to me. I am curious as to what you would recommend and the steps I should take. FYI, I am 55. - Angela. Angela, this is a great question, because Botox and fillers are two very different types of treatments (but often complimentary) that can help with treating wrinkles and peri-oral lines around the mouth, but it all depends on your individual needs and goals.
AMERICAN LEATHER NEVER LOOKED SO GOOD.
You should seek a qualified medical spa or provider with whom you feel most comfortable for treatment and who is willing to discuss your options and realistic expectations during an in-person consultation. Be sure they capture before and after photos so you can see the difference, and you’ll want to return for a follow-up appointment around the 2-week mark to ensure best results. Before you schedule your consultation, here are some quick and basic facts about your options: Botox is a neuromodulator, so its main purpose is to relax muscles and soften wrinkles. Botox may last up to 3 months, but in areas of the face that have a lot of movement (i.e. lips), the effects may fade sooner. Botox is highly successful for achieving very subtle softening effects on and around the lips, but you’re more likely to find success with fillers! Restylane Refyne and even Volbella are highly effective filler treatments for peri-oral lines, because both are hyaluronic acid (HA) based, which means the HA helps to replenish moisture and fullness using a naturally occurring substance found in your own skin. At age 55, you are more likely to see a better result from these fillers than you would with Botox, as you will most likely need to fill in and smooth out the wrinkles that concern you to achieve a visible and pleasing result. Restylane Refyne can last up to 6 months in the lip area, while Volbella may last for up to 1 year. If you are looking for additional “plumpage” in the lip, you may also consider Juvéderm, which is also HA-based and the #1 trusted go-to for instant added volume in multiple areas of the face. And the old adage “no pain, no gain” isn’t necessarily true anymore! For your first time receiving filler in the lip area, you may wish to ask if your provider offers topical numbing to help ease or eliminate any discomfort and ensure your first experience is pleasant and, dare I say, even fun! Anna Churchill is the founder of Synergy Spa & Aesthetics with two locations in Raleigh. She also teaches corrective makeup and innovative skin care to dermatologists, plastic surgeons, aestheticians, and spa owners worldwide. Email your questions to askanna@trianglestyle.com

BEAUTY | REVIEW
Summer is almost in full swing. Choosing the perfect sunblock can be overwhelming and pricey. You want the best one, you don’t want to spend a fortune and you want it to be safe to use – these are NOT unreasonable requests. After a good amount of digging and testing, I’ve discovered three of the top rated and most effective (safe) sunscreens available. So, dust off that swimsuit, we’ve got the best sunscreens for your kids, your face and your everything else! — HEATHER GREEN
Best Sunscreen for Kids: Babyganics SPF 50 Without a doubt, after researching tirelessly, Babyganics wins, hands down. This organic, nontoxic mineral based sunscreen SPF 50. Babies and kids need sunshine – not only for the vitamin D but being outdoors improves brain development as well! Early on, babies and young children do not have thick enough skin to totally protect certain tissues from the suns harmful rays, enter: sunscreen. Babyganics has created a very unique blend of essential oils from tomatoes, cranberries, sunflowers, black cumin and red raspberries, which all contain needed phytochemicals to protect young skin. The best part is, there is no artificial ANYTHING in this sunscreen, so you can feel good about using it on your kids. I use this sunscreen on my children and they have spent HOURS at the pool, with no sunburn. A good deal at $10 a bottle, this is a must-have for summer! Best All Over Sunscreen: Think Sport Safe Sunscreen, SPF 50+ First of all, you have to consider exactly what you find important in a sunscreen. Like many others out there, I have slowly started to switch most of my beauty products out with organic ones – this is one of those “it can’t hurt” moves and “better safe, than sorry” changes. I want long term wearability out of my sunscreen, and I want a higher SPF. Think Sport is not “organic”, but it does rate a 1 on the EWG scale, which is the lowest hazard. It also lasts for up to 80 minutes and is ideal for water activities or outdoor sports that get you sweating. Bonus, Think Sport provides some skin cancer protection thanks to the zinc oxide it contains. At around $13, this all over sunscreen is my top choice.
36 | triangle style
Best Sunscreen for Faces: La Roche-Posay Anthelios Clear Skin Face Sunscreen for Oily Skin SPF 60 Like any other lotion, you do not want to use “body” lotion on your face due to the different oils and fragrances that facial skin tends to be more sensitive to. The most difficult part of selecting a sunscreen for your face, is finding one that won’t cause breakouts or create an oil slick from cheek to cheek! It is important to choose a facial sunscreen that is also very effective (you only get ONE face, so protect it!) Leave is to the French to design a masterpiece that you can use! Anthelios Clear Skin not only absorbs oil that clogs pores, it boasts a Cell-Ox Shield XL which is simply put, really awesome protection from the sun. It is also dry to the touch and wears well with make-up, so you can use it everyday without having to worry about clogging your pores. A little pricey at $20, but it’s a pay now or pay later deal when it comes to your face!

- Written By Jenny Yarborough Not all flowers are created equal. Some, although beautiful while attached to the plant, unfortunately will wilt within a day or even hours of cutting. So take my sage advice and try planting a cutting garden with some of Garden Supply Company’s favorite picks for the summer season.
OUR PICKS Roses are red. And we all know they look gorgeous in arrangements too. But sometimes they’ll leave us blue––wanting a little more. I don’t want to knock roses off by any means. Roses and Gerbera daisies and sunflowers and cone flowers and lilies––oh, my! They’re all great and top-sellers when it comes to the floral industry. They’re perfect staples to plant in your garden. But, if you’re looking to branch out, we’ve got a few fresh picks for you. GO GREEN So you’ve got your funky flowers but what about your eclectic greenery? Try planting umbrella palm, horsetail, coleus, helleborus or even a little something from the veggie garden like okra to knock your floral arrangement out of the park.
RED HOT POKER a tropical must-have. From fiery red to yellow, its glow screams ombre. It’s so in!
MOCK ORANGE TREES come in several varieties. Their gentle blossoms are absolutely precious.
POMEGRANATE isn’t just for fruit salad. Try planting a flowering pomegranate tree for a splash of red.
FUCHSIA defines the bold colors of summer sunsets with dashing hues of fuchsia and purple.
DRIFT ROSE Yes, I’m back to the roses. Drift roses are my current favorite of their breed. 40 | triangle style
ANGELONIA is a statement piece that can stand on it’s own. Choose from white, purple, pink or red. DEUTZIA carries petite flowers along it’s slender branches. Cut just a stem and bah-dah-bing! Your living room decor is complete!
GERANIUMS are a Southern staple for your front porch containers and their bulky pink, purple, white and red blooms brighten up any room when picked for your viewing pleasure.
TRICKS OF THE TRADE I know, you want your coffee table flowers to last well-past your picking party. So how do you keep your arrangements fresh as long as possible? What you do from the get-go actually makes a huge difference in the way things turn out in the end. Such is life, right? When I go out to the garden, I take a sharp pair of scissors or pruners and a bucket full of water with me. It’s important to place the stems directly into the water once they’re cut. In your yard, flowers are able to form and bud and bloom as they are receiving water and nutrients via their root system. Once a flower is cut, its natural defense mechanism is to seal itself at the cut so that it won’t lose any more of its vital water supply. By placing the cutting into water immediately, the stem won’t find it necessary to close. Once you’ve hunted and gathered your fresh finds, bring them inside to the kitchen sink. Cut the stems again but this time to your desired length under running water and at an angle. This will help the flowers to absorb a little more water while they’re sitting pretty for you. If possible, change the water in your vase daily and cut the stems with each watering. RULE OF GREEN THUMB Still need a little help figuring out which flowering plants will do best in your cutting garden? Swing by Garden Supply Company and let’s talk plants. All of us green thumbs are rooting for you!

TOP TEN TIPS TO SAVE THE BATTERY IN YOUR SMARTPHONE Despite new technologies, regular improvements of mobile operating systems, and tailor-made apps, battery-life continues to be an Achilles' heel for all smartphones. The iPhone 7 Plus comes with 2900 mAh battery capable of providing up to 14 hours of 4G talk time. In the Android world, Galaxy S8+ has a 3500 mAh battery providing up to 24 hours of 4G talk time. The features that new smartphones flaunt, such as the QHD display in Galaxy S8 and the 4K display in Sony Xperia Z series, are so resource-intensive that they quash any effect of a bigger battery. In this article, you will find ten important tips to save the power on your smartphone. LATEST SOFTWARE UPDATES Updates of mobile operating systems improve not only the smartphone features but also the battery life. One of the recent updates in the Android world was the move from earlier Dalvik virtual machine to the new ART (Android Runtime), which is used in the versions since Kit Kat. ART significantly improves the battery life of smartphones with ahead-of-time (AOT) compilations, resulting in converting apps to native machine code during installation. Similarly, Android Marshmallow introduced Doze, a feature that saves battery when the phone is not moving. Most of the OS and app updates bring better power management also, so make it a point to keep your phone's software up to date.

TURN OFF WI-FI, GPS, APPS, AND BACKGROUND PROCESSES Android and iOS have significantly improved their multitasking capabilities. If an Android app is not currently in use, it is moved out of the system memory temporarily to save power. However, there are always background processes and apps that can be power hogs. For instance, it's best to turn off data whenever you don't need it. Note also, that Wi-Fi is significantly less power-hungry than data connections. To find apps running in the background, draining battery, you can use a good power management app such as Battery Doctor (Android and iOS) or Battery Manager (iOS). OPTIMIZE YOUR DISPLAY Bright displays usually consume more power. You should save power by dimming the display when you don't need it. Display timeout can be set as low as possible to ensure your phone's display switches off automatically during inactivity. In addition, you can create customized profiles to activate Wi-Fi, data, etc., only when needed. While getting to bed, activate such toned-down profiles so that your smartphone saves power during the night. CALIBRATE THE BATTERY Today's Li-Ion and Li-Po batteries have a "charge retention memory" that can be manipulated by proper calibration. When you get your device, it's better to charge it to full and then let the battery run its natural course of complete draining. Repeat this a few times on the initial days to bring the battery to the maximum potential. This process will help greatly in extending the period of usage per charge. Make sure also to drain the battery completely once in a while.

BE MINDFUL OF PUSH NOTIFICATIONS Social media apps using push notifications can be get very resource-hungry. While it's a convenience to get updates from your friends all day long, it's better to turn off push notifications to save your battery. OPERATE IN OPTIMAL TEMPERATURE It's common to see the battery drain faster when the operating temperature is high. It's, hence, always better to operate your smartphone in cooler places. If you think your device is overheating, you should take it to a cooler location or walk into an air-conditioned room. Never leave your gadgets working under direct sunlight. In addition, you can close unnecessary apps to reduce the pressure on the processor, which in turn reduces the operating temperature.

TURN OFF HOME SCREEN WIDGETS AND LIVE WALLPAPERS There are many app launchers and home screen apps available in Google Play. Android and iOS also give the option of live wallpapers, a way of improving the user experience of the device. Although these features can be quite attractive, they also take up a huge amount of power. If you are not particularly interested in them, it's advisable to turn them off. BATTERY CASES There are some smartphone protective cases that come with an embedded battery. Using such covers can make your device a little bit bulky, but can almost double its battery power. Juice Pack is an example of a battery case for the iPhone. POWER BANKS Power banks can be an attractive solution if you are on an extended travel during which you want to recharge your smartphone twice or thrice. A large number of power banks from various companies are available. Most of them come with sufficient battery power to recharge a few devices at a time. They also retain power when turned off. LOCK SCREEN NOTIFICATIONS Android Lollipop and Marshmallow allow you to have notifications on the lock screen itself. If you keep getting a large number of notifications, it's better to turn on lock screen notifications so that you are able to see them without actually unlocking the device, which can consume power. Saving power may seem like a difficult task, but these tips can help you extend your phone's juice for at least one more day. Battery is one aspect of the smartphone that hasn't seen much technological advancement in at least the last ten years: All main-stream smartphones still use Li-Po or Li-Ion batteries. While the sizes of these batteries have increased, their performance remains unchanged. Hence for a foreseeable future, you may have to rely on battery saving techniques to keep running your devices longer.

TWO GREAT RESCUES...
Saving Grace Animal Rescue Adopted dogs make wonderful pets! So many people are told they can only get a dog with a good temperament if they purchase a pure bred from a breeder. This is not true. Dogs at Saving Grace are selected from local shelters where lack of kennel space keeps animals from being placed up for adoption. Before a dog comes into the Saving Grace program, it is evaluated for temperament and suitability as a family pet. savinggracenc.org Great Dane Rescue Alliance The Great Dane Rescue Alliance was formed in 2012 by a group of dedicated volunteers that wanted to focus their efforts on helping Great Danes and other dogs that needed them most. Through their foster home based program, they work to rescue and rehabilitate those that may be otherwise overlooked. greatdanerescuealliance.org

TRAINER TALK MORE WATER, LESS ALCOHOL. With the warmer months come more beer and barbecues. We’re not saying you can’t enjoy a cocktail every once in a while, but alcohol is a major inhibitor to fat loss. Typically, your liver metabolizes fat first so you can use it for energy. When alcohol enters your body, fat metabolism takes a backseat as your body works tirelessly to break down the alcohol. Imagine eating and drinking at the same time; your food gets stored as fat while your liver tries to breakdown the toxins entering your body. If you do consume alcohol, pick your poison. Instead of a margarita (which can pack up to 500 calories), try red wine or flavored vodka with a splash of soda and fresh lime juice, both roughly 100 calories each. When you do indulge, given that alcohol inhibits food breakdown, make sure to drink at least one hour before or one hour after your healthy eats. Better options (besides water)? Tea and coffee. Not only are these liquids made up of diseasefighting antioxidants, but they give you a slight calorie-burning effect due to the caffeine. PRACTICE 80% NUTRITION, 20% FITNESS. We know the saying “abs are made in the kitchen” is way over used, but there’s so much truth to it. You can’t out run a bad diet, period. Tip 1: Concentrate on lean protein (chicken, pork, turkey), healthy fats (low fat dairy & nuts) & low glycemic carbs (fruits, vegetables, beans, sweet potato, minimally processed grains, like quinoa and brown rice). Tip 2: Consume carbohydrates during breakfast & lunch, giving you fuel for the day but also time to burn them off. SKIP THE SUGAR. From the cereal you eat for breakfast to the dressing on your salad to the ketchup on your fries, sugar is lurking everywhere and wrecking havoc on your weight loss efforts. We’re not talking about the 66 | triangle style
natural sugars that exist in fruits, vegetables and dairy — carbohydrates that our bodies need to function. It’s the sugar that’s added to foods during processing for added flavor, texture or color that’s the problem (juice, creamer, muffins, white bread & pasta, white potatoes, chips, crackers, sweets, alcohol). Added sugar increases insulin levels, hinders your metabolism and causes these calories to be stored as fat. H.I.I.T it. We’re talking about high intensity internal training, folks. Studies have shown that this full-body circuit training that alters between high intensity workouts and short resting periods burns more calories than steady state calories or running on the treadmill for an hour. The best part: the intense exertion ensures that your body continues to burn more fat and calories in the 24 hours after your workout. Bingo. BAG IT, DON’T GRAB IT. Meal prep. Take your lunches to work. Minimize lunches out. And happy hours after work.
TOP TIPS
JOURNAL. According to a study done by the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, people who kept a food diary six days a week lost twice as much weight as those who only recorded their food consumption one day a week or less. The thought is that if you know you have to record every bite, you might think twice about what you put in your mouth. To help, download the My Fitness Pal app on your phone, which will journal and calorie count for you! DREAM SWEET DREAMS. We can agree (and researchers would back us up) that sleep is the most important when it comes to your overall wellness and weight loss goals. A lack of ’s can: • Change your fat cells and prevent fat loss. When you get seven hours of sleep or less, your body experiences what University of Chicago coined as “metabolic grogginess.” After a few days of sleep deprivation, your body’s ability to properly use insulin (the master storage hormone) becomes depleted, which causes your body to store fat in the wrong places. Additionally, according to a study done by Annals of Internal Medicine, people on a sleep-deprived diet saw their fat loss cut by 55% as opposed to their well-rested counterparts. • Increase cravings and make you hungrier. Believe it or not, hunger isn’t a culprit of will power or control. Sleeping less than six hours a night triggers the area of the brain that boosts your need for food while altering the hormones that help control hunger, leptin and ghrelin. I think we’ve all experienced the uncontrollable salty and sweet cravings after a rough nights sleep. Wouldn’t it be nice if we craved kale instead of french fries? It just doesn’t work like that, unfortunately. ADD A MIND-BODY COMPONENT. Rest and recovery are as important as your high-intensity workouts—both mentally and physically. Incorporate yoga, meditation and stretching to your weekly routine to slow your mind and restore your muscles. FIND A PIC (PARTNER-IN-CRIME). Community, support and accountability are powerful tools when trying to achieve your fitness goals. Find a group fitness class with like-minded people who are trying to get in shape too, or hire a one-on-one expert to fuel your motivation and take your fitness to the next level. LOVE YOURSELF. Being grateful for how far you’ve come, patient with the growth process and accepting of who you see in the mirror right this very moment will help motivate you to keep going and become the person you want to be.

Cancer. It’s an ugly word, and usually brings along its sinister cousins— fear and dread. The most common form of cancer is skin cancer, and it’s treatable. Despite that positive bit of news, however, many people feel such anxiety around anything related to cancer that they overlook that fact. Ironically, the phobia of cancer is often more detrimental than the disease itself because it can paralyze people into not taking swift action to diagnose and treat it. The challenge we face now is how to overcome the fear and remove delays from receiving adequate care, which can allow the illness to become more severe. Contrary to widely held beliefs, a diagnosis of skin cancer is not a death sentence. YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT SKIN CANCER AND MOHS MICROGRAPHIC SURGERY:
• Melanoma can be readily identified with screening. It’s most commonly found on the torso for men and the legs for women. • Melanoma is typically not a large raised lesion, but instead a flat mark about six millimeters in diameter, about the size of a pencil eraser, with color variation and asymmetry.
When referring patients for skin screenings or skin cancer treatment, look for dermatologists who are fellows of the American Society of Mohs Surgery, specially trained to perform the Mohs Micrographic surgical removal of skin cancer and other malignancies. Also look for an office that offers complete care for skin cancer, from initial screenings and treatment planning to reconstruction and follow-up care.

WHAT HAVE YOU HAD DONE? MICROBLADING | SKIN APEEL
Mandy Malone, a local hairstylist, is no stranger to the everchanging trends and techniques in the beauty industry. She had heard about the wonders of microblading and thought she would be the perfect candidate, due to thinnerhaired spots in her brows that sometimes appeared uneven. After hearing so many positive microblading testimonials, she decided to take the plunge with Georgeta Juncu of Skin Apeel in Cary, North Carolina. “I wanted to try microblading so that I could throw my brow pencil away!” she tells Triangle Style Magazine. With it being her first time, Mandy did have concerns about the procedure. “At first, I was nervous that they would look ‘fake,’ and I was worried about the pain of the actual process.” PRE-MICROBLADING PROCESS: When Mandy first arrived at her appointment, Georgeta made sure to thoroughly review the microblading process and all aftercare procedures with her. She also explained to Mandy that the color needed to settle and would appear darker and sharper right after the procedure, but would gradually soften over the following days.

Written By Kimberly Arnold
Georgeta then began prepping Mandy by cleaning the skin around the brows and tweezing any stray brows, so that she could stencil the best brow shape based on her preferences and facial structure. Then, Georgeta discussed the best brow color for Mandy.
Exceptional Leasing & Management Services For Property Owners, Builders, Investors, Realtors & Corporate Relocation
MICROBLADING PROCESS: Georgeta used a hand held tool and the procedure was virtually painless for Mandy (so much so that she even fell asleep at one point). She says, “Some spots were a little more sensitive than others, but the pain was only a little more uncomfortable than tweezing.” The tool allowed Georgeta to sketch thin strokes into the skin. Afterwards, she applied an additional coat of dye and let the ink sit for a few minutes. She then cleaned and numbed the area again, and then repeated the process two more times before completing the procedure. POST-MICROBLADING PROCESS Mandy is happy to report that there was, “no pain, peeling, or redness post-procedure and that, overall, the aftercare was simple.” She goes on to say that, “Georgeta gave me a cream that I used every day for a week after the procedure. On day three, I still had no pain whatsoever, and was already loving the amazing results!” MANDY’S TESTIMONIAL: “I wake up every morning feeling like I can walk out the door with NO other makeup needed. My face and eyes look so much more framed and open! I definitely understand the power of good brows now! “Georgeta was amazing! She is incredibly knowledgeable about the service and made me feel comfortable throughout the whole service.” And for all our readers who love a more natural makeup look, Mandy says, “it’s actually hard to tell which is an actual hair and which is a microblading mark. My brows look soft and feathered, not harsh and boxy like traditional eyebrow tattooing.” When asked if Mandy would recommend microblading to her friends, she answered without hesitation, “Yes! I have been passing out cards to EVERYONE and I’ve already received compliments from both strangers and friends about my brows!”
IF YOU’RE CONSIDERING MICROBLADING As with any procedure, there are always things to be aware of. Georgeta personally sits down with each client prior to the procedure about what to avoid and what to expect along the way.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST MYTH YOU ENCOUNTER WITH NEW PATIENTS CONSIDERING A COSMETIC DR RUSSO • www.russoddsraleigh.com DENTAL PROCEDURE SUCH AS A SMILE ENHANCEMENT WITH PORCELAIN VENEERS? The biggest myth I encounter is that cosmetic dentistry and patient results are a mystery. Moreso, patients are surprised to realize that they are able to see the final design of their customized smile before I pick up a single instrument. In my practice, I am able to de-mystify the cosmetic procedure to get patients the exact smile they want without ever wondering what it will look like. Surprisingly, this concept is foreign to most people! I consistently hear stories of how patients had veneer or crown procedures done by a previous dentist and were given no input or ideas as to what their final smile will look like; and that concept is crazy to me. My cosmetic patients will tell you, I am up front about the procedure and communicative about the end results. Your input matters! I also believe that if you, the patient, knows what the end result will look like, it takes a lot of the anxiety out of getting a smile makeover. It’s why I do a lot of revision (do-over) dentistry. WHAT IS YOUR MOST REQUESTED DENTAL TREATMENT? My most requested dental enhancement is porcelain veneers along with in-office tooth power whitening. The results for each patient are customized to suit facial features so there is no one-size-fits-all porcelain veneers procedure (and that’s a good thing!). THESE DAYS, PEOPLE SEEM TO BE ORIENTED TOWARDS WANTING INSTANT GRATIFICATION, ARE THERE ANY PROCEDURES THAT CAN PROVIDE INSTANT RESULTS? I always tell my patients that ‘instant’ is a relative term. Contrary to some belief, what I do does not take months or years. I can create a new smile with porcelain veneers and/or crowns in as little as 2 weeks. For same-day, immediate results I recommend recontouring gum tissue, re-shaping tooth enamel or in-office power bleaching for a quick high impact result.
72 | triangle style
FOR SOMEONE WHO DOES HAVE DENTAL INSURANCE, IS COSMETIC DENTAL WORK COVERED? Dental insurance is great for cleanings and fillings but there are severe limitations beyond that. Cosmetic dental procedures and smile enhancements with porcelain veneers are an investment but I always reiterate to patients that the investment is worth it! To that extent, we do offer several financing options for patients to select from including the length of their financing term to finding a payment plan that can easily fit into just about anyone’s budget. Many of my cosmetic patients take advantage of these financing offers! FROM START TO FINISH, WHAT IS THE TYPICAL TIME FRAME TO HAVING A SMILE YOU CAN BE CONFIDENT ABOUT? A complete smile makeover with porcelain veneers usually takes 2 to 3 visits over 2 months to complete. I am able to bundle procedures to maximize visits and will soon be offering virtual consults for many of our out-of-town patients. WHAT DO YOU HEAR MOST OFTEN FROM YOUR PATIENTS ABOUT THEIR RESULTS? Almost all of my patients regret waiting as long as they did to have their smile makeover completed. All of them are blown away with the final result; and how “natural” their new smile looks. There seems to be a misconception about porcelain veneers as every single one of my patients can’t get over how “amazing” and “natural” their new smiles look. I’d say those are the two descriptions I hear most often.ur head. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COSMETIC DENTISTRY AND AESTHETIC DENTISTRY? Aesthetic dentistry is to restore to a natural state of beauty. My goal as an aesthetic dentist is to mimic nature, or to give my patients an enhanced natural result. Cosmetic dentistry is to take it a step further and go beyond what is capable of being created in nature. Bleached white teeth are considered cosmetic because they are not found in nature. Certain patients want larger, or smaller, or really white teeth. There is no right or wrong approach, it is dependant upon the patient’s overall goals. Having mastered both aesthetic and cosmetic dentistry, I am trained to deliver the results my patients desire.
WHAT'S ONE THING PATIENTS DON'T REALIZE ABOUT GENERAL DENTISTRY? Many patients don’t realize that general dentistry is not all the same! Certain dentists use materials that are cheap but not illegal in order to offer really low prices. I believe that we are an extremely health conscious society and we value our wellbeing which is why we are a mercury and BPA free practice, something that is not common in general dentistry. I only use the best materials from legitimate suppliers for my patients. I use the highest of quality dental labs that make their restorations in America. I tell all my patients: you can certainly find things cheaper but you will get what you pay for! DESCRIBE YOURSELF AS A COSMETIC DENTIST IN THE TRIANGLE. First and foremost I believe in being honest with my patients. I believe in progressively keeping teeth healthy before things get beyond repair and are more costly to fix. I am constantly learning the latest techniques and collaborate several times a year with the world’s top cosmetic dentists in New York City. I am highly trained in facial aesthetic design and how your smile fits within the variances of everyone’s face and the factors that make smiles look natural and beautiful. I can treat the aging smile by not only making teeth healthy, but do it in a way that can support facial structures to look more youthful and vibrant. WHAT SHOULD PROSPECTIVE PATIENTS DO IF THEY ARE INTERESTED IN A SMILE ENHANCEMENT AND HAVE FURTHER QUESTIONS? The first thing I would advise is for patients to have an open mind about what a vibrant, natural smile looks like. I would recommend a thorough analysis of your smile with models and intra-oral facial photography. Patients need to realize that a smile enhancement is an investment and will have a major (positive!) impact in your life. A vibrant, youthful smile can add confidence and self-esteem in addition to health benefits and improved chewing ability. I currently serve the triangle in my Raleigh office and am available for smile enhancement consultations. Please feel free to call at 919-890-5147 or via web www.russoddsraleigh.com summer | 73

WRITTEN BY LOU SCOTT Writing a memoir is something most of us don’t do. Perhaps we’re too busy or are under the impression this sort of thing is best reserved for the famous. Or perhaps we simply think we have nothing terribly interesting to say and that it would be presumptuous of us to even try. That just isn’t so. Everyone is a legend — or someday will be — in the eyes of their own family. Someday someone in your family will want to know more about you and about the times you lived through. They will want to know the details of your daily life. About the food you ate, the books you read, the details of what your life looked like. Even the world news that most affected you. They will want to know what it felt like to be you. When I read my Irish great great grandmother’s few surviving sentences from the 1800s, they meant the world to me. She said that the wind

was howling, that she was cold and that she had only had a part of a potato for dinner, but that it was the best-tasting potato she’d ever eaten and she had a lovely fire to roast it over. My mother, her great-granddaughter, kept a birthday journal of just one or two pages a year. Like birthday cake and ice-cream, it became a family tradition. And when I discovered the tiny pocket diary my dad kept during the Second World War, I felt I had been given part of my father back. I read about his night parachute training, saw by his changing handwriting how long it took the worst of his wounds to heal and how he felt when VE and VJ days were announced. But suppose your experiences are more routine? Or suppose you are a recluse and your habits never change? You can write about that. That in itself would be worthwhile to mention. It’s the things in your life which may seem incidental at the time, that are often the most telling--the way something looked or smelled, the name of your favorite song. For example, whenever I hear the song “Key Largo,” the smell of eucalyptus trees and the steamy heat of Charleston at midnight, the windows of my VW rolled down and the music blaring — sit right here beside me. Then the rest comes tumbling back: the pride of my first marriage, the devastation when it ended; the sheer joy and hard work of hand sanding floors in an old house; the despair at leaving a town and friends I had loved; even the years I was imitating being a hippy. Life is like a kaleidoscope — your childhood, adolescence, work, retirement — all of it is significant but it gets scrambled up and some memories invariably get pushed into oblivion. Sure you may remember most of the highlights. But life really is after all in the details. That doesn’t mean it’s too late for you to begin to write them down. Nor does it matter how old you are when you do or even how many sentences you write. Someone someday will read what you have left and they will be grateful you took the time. And after all is said and done, so will you.

PLATINUM SITTERS
INSIDERS SCOOP
It’s Friday night and your sweetheart wants just the two of you to go out to WRITdinner. No kids. But finding a babysitter‌ ugh! Why is it so hard to find someone reliable and trustworthy to watch our kids? First is the Facebook appeal, and sorting through countless posts and PMs. Then you move to pricey or unreliable websites, finally leaving several unanswered messages while hoping for a callback. With any luck, you find a so-so babysitter, or else you find yourself eating takeout on the couch with the kids demanding every third bite. There’s got to be a better way! The thing about needing childcare is that, although you might hire just anyone to, say, haul your junk from the garage to the dump, you can’t hire just anyone off the street to watch your kids. And while you know several great potential candidates live in your area, you don’t really know how to find them. So how should you go about finding a sitter? What questions should you ask? “Start chatting with neighbors, friends, and family to make connections in the community well before you need a sitter,â€? says Stephanie Keefer, CEO of PlatinumSitters. Then you can enter into a careful selection process that should include an extensive application, previous experience, education, and work references (two of which should be childcare related). Companies like PlatinumSitters understand the importance of including background checks and in-person interviews as part of their service. Standards are being challenged as these new companies move away from the
78 | triangle style
old model of allowing anyone and everyone join as long as they can afford the cost of an online membership. Instead, PlatinumSitters makes conducting a full in-person interview a requirement in order to analyze and assess potential sitters’ characters and personalities. This not only confirms their experiences and abilities, but also gives in-depth knowledge about each individual. These insights often include their hobbies, aspirations, future plans, and sense of professionalism. Once sitter interviews are successfully completed, the last step is validation. You get to read parent testimonials to see what others have thought of them, and you can find just the right person who will be the right fit for your family. “Our review system is like Uber, Angie’s List, and Yelp all mixed into one great program,” says Keefer. She goes on to say, “Seeing how much your friends and neighbors love their sitter can really provide the confidence and push parents need to book a sitter.” On PlatinumSitters’ platform, parents are able to read one another’s testimonials and their ratings of that booking. So the next time Friday night rolls around and your beloved suggests getting tapas, you know right where to look to ensure a qualified, trustworthy sitter will take excellent care of your pride and joy for a few hours. The best part? You don't have to share your food if you don't want to.

FOR JUNE: • THE HISTORY BOYS, are eight bright but unlikely candidates who prepare for the entrance exam to Oxford under the tutelage of two teachers. One teacher focuses on strategies to pass the exam; the other, bizarre and offbeat, focuses on the passion and joy of learning for its own sake. It is this teacher whose influence brings out the best in each student and stays with them for the rest of their lives and careers. • TOM JONES, an adaptation of Henry Fielding’s
novel, features the delightful Albert Finney as a sometimes hilarious, always good-natured lad who enjoys himself in spite of his adopted father’s determination to make him into a grown-up.
FOR JULY: • THE STRAIGHT STORY, is a touch-
ing old-fashioned tale about an eccentric man who travels from Iowa to Wisconsin on a riding lawn mower to visit his estranged brother.
• RABBIT-PROOF FENCE is a true story. It’s about three young aborigine girls who in the 1930s walk 1500 miles through the Australian outback to rejoin their mother from whom they were forcibly taken. Because until 1969 it was Australia’s racial policy to separate half-white, half-aborigine children from their parents in the hope they would grow up to marry whites -- thus in just a few generations obscuring their aborigine heritage. FOR AUGUST: • MISS POTTER is one of those happy films -- perfectly charming and visually enticing. Starring Renée Zellweger, the story is about Beatrix Potter, the creator of the children’s book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit. • ANNE OF GREEN GABLES is a heartwarming
and lighthearted miniseries about a spunky red-headed orphan who is assigned to an elderly brother and sister who don’t know what to do with her. They had specifically asked for a boy.
