YouTube’s First Family

FAMILY

Written By Heather Green • Photographed By Jennifer Mauren Photography 14 | triangle style

If you haven’t heard of the Holderness Family, then you are most likely living off grid. They have become YouTube’s first family who sort of stumbled upon the viral video vibe that was happening a few years ago…and took off running! Both Penn and Kim Holderness have media backgrounds and wicked senses of humor – and along with their adorable kids, Lola and Penn Charles, their timing was perfect and these guys were so relatable that EVERYONE fell in love with this perfectly imperfect crew! From Good Morning America to celebrities tweeting their videos, the Holderness family has filled a family void that we can ALL appreciate and we caught up with Penn and Kim to learn more about their past, what’s happening presently and what’s coming up.

OK, HOW ON EARTH DID YOU GO FROM BEING AN ANCHOR ON THE NEWS, TO VIRAL BREAKOUT STARS? IT SEEMED TO HAPPEN OVERNIGHT! It kind of did. While anchoring at WNCN was a great experience, I was really starting to miss the kids. Once they were in school, the hours were impossible...I was at work from 2:30 until midnight, so the only time I really got to see them was early in the morning getting them to school. It wasn't enough. Kim had started a media training/ production company, and started enlisting me as a producer/editor, doing work on the other side of the camera. I really enjoyed it. We built up a big enough client list that I could leave the news and go to work with her, but we were still winging it - not much savings, and a lot of risk. We decided to mention the new job in our annual Christmas video (it was actually the second one we did). Somehow it went viral. It was nuts, we started getting

The Highly Sought and Collectible Tobacco Basket -

calls from GMA, The Today Show, production companies around the country, and national brands were interested in working with us. It wasn't what we intended, staying in front of the camera, but, as we discovered, there were so many opportunities in the new YouTube/Facebook space (it was kind of new back then, if you can imagine). The rest is history. WHO COMES UP WITH MOST OF THE IDEAS FOR YOUR VIDEOS? Teamwork - as a family, we try to find humor in the real things going on in our lives. Then Kim and I have a chat to determine the best way to tell the story. If it's a song, I usually write and compose the music. If it's a skit, Kim does the script. We shoot and edit it together. ARE YOUR KIDS TOTALLY ON BOARD WITH EACH OF YOUR PARODIES OR DO THEY LET YOU KNOW WHEN IT'S JUST NOT WORKING? Shockingly, they love it 99% of the time. A big reason why - we limit their workload. If they are going to be in a shot we make sure all the grunt work is done (lighting, camera, etc.) and just have them roll in and be themselves. If they aren't feeling it, they don't have to do it. HAVE YOU HAD TO NIX ANY IDEAS AFTER PREPARING AND REALIZING THAT IT JUST WASN'T WORKING? Oh yeah, lots of those. Sometimes we write something and say to each other, "meh", and we move onto something else. If we aren't really laughing, it's not going to amuse anyone else. WHY DO YOU THINK PEOPLE ARE SO DRAWN TO THE FAMILY ASPECT OF YOUR VIDEOS? Because they are going through the same stuff. Being a parent is great, and scary, and wonderful and frustrating and unpredictable, and we are all in it together.

CLOTHING CURATED WITH A SOUTHERN EYE

ARE THERE ANY NEW ONES IN THE WORKS? Always. I am writing a back-to-school song as we speak. Hope it's good - fingers crossed. CAN YOU GIVE US A SNEAK PEAK? Not just yet - still in the early stages. But we are going old school 80's music.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE VIDEO THAT YOU'VE MADE THUS FAR? Snow Day (the kids had a blast!), any of the Christmas Videos (they get to be the most positive).

DO YOU EVER ARGUE ABOUT WHAT TO DO/WHAT NOT TO DO? Absolutely! It's important, because if we don't all love it, it's going to suck. But we've learned how to express our feelings without hurting the other one. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELVES IN TEN YEARS? Either still doing the same fun thing, or working at Starbucks. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO VISIT IN THE TRIANGLE? We love the greenway trails, the parks, and EATING! We love Garland, Poole's, and Rise. MRS. H - WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR "BEAUTY SECRETS"? FAVORITE PRODUCTS? I'm a mix of drug store finds -- good ol' Ponds cream for makeup remover is my favorite. I swear by L'Oreal voluminous mascara. Right now I'm in the hunt for an under eye concealer to cover the dark circles from years of no sleep.

DO YOU GUYS GET RECOGNIZED IN PUBLIC OFTEN? ANY FUNNY "STALKER" STORIES? Hahaha! No stalkers, but we do get recognized. It's interesting - in places like Target, Disney World, the Beach (family friendly places), it happens a lot. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE VIDEOS ON YOUTUBE AND WHO DO YOU GUYS WATCH AND FOLLOW? Penn - DudePerfect, Bad Lip Reading, Kim Dr. Pimple Popper, Jimmy Fallon. HAVE YOU HAD ANY RESPONSE FROM SOME OF THE CELEBS THAT YOU'VE PARODIED? A few artists have tweeted or shared the parodies, which is amazing -- I think Penn's head would explode if Will Smith sent a message. Catch The Holderness Family online at (you guessed it!) Have you ever looked in your closet and noticed there was a fairly distinct theme to the patterns and clothes you wear? Is your closet roaring with animal prints, or overflowing with feminine florals? Well, according to researchers there's a reason behind what we choose to wear and the patterns or designs we gravitate towards. Researchers tell us that while we are shopping, our subconscious minds are hard at work driving our decisions on what to buy. It's all dependent on how we perceive ourselves and

how we want others to see us. Our clothes are a reflection of our self-image, mood, and confidence, and what we wear says a lot about our personality. The whole concept is quite intriguing when you think about it. So, what does your favorite fashion pattern say about you? We did some digging and found some interesting personality traits. We also asked a few local bloggers with to hit the streets and visit some popular boutiques to showcase some of the fabulous patterned looks.

SPOONFLOWER AND SPROUT PATTERNS OF DURHAM ARE IGNITING CREATIVITY BY TAKING SEWING AND FABRIC DESIGN TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL Written By Marnie Settle, Photography provided by Spoonflower

24 | triangle style

Crafters, DIYers, entrepreneurs, interior designers, sewing enthusiasts, and artists everywhere are in love with Durham based Spoonflower, the world’s first web-based service for custom, on-demand fabric creation.

Spoonflower offers anyone the opportunity to express themselves by printing artwork on fabric that can be made into clothes, pillows, bedding, curtains, bags, furniture, artwork, costumes, and more. Who knew something so cool was right here in our own backyard?

Consigning Fashion & Celebrating Women Of All Sizes From 0-28 Pre-Loved Designer Consignment

Customers can design and upload their own custom pattern or choose from Spoonflower’s online Marketplace of over half a million designs created by independent designers all over the world. There are over 22 fabrics to choose from, as well as wallpaper, and even gift wrap to print on. Place your order online, and Spoonflower will print your design and ship it right to your door. "We have such a diverse range of designs in our Marketplace that have been created by artists all over the world. Spoonflower gives independent designers an opportunity to share their talents with the world in a way that wasn’t possible just a few year ago,” says Katie Berman, Event Coordinator at Spoonflower. As if Spoonflower wasn’t the coolest thing you’ve heard about all year, their sister company, Sprout Patterns takes the art of sewing a step further. Sprout offers sewing pattern designs that are digitally printed directly onto your fabric of choice to create customized cut-and-sew projects. Here’s how it works. Choose a sewing pattern from Sprout’s curated collection, then select your design of choice from the Spoonflower Marketplace, and select your size and type of fabric. In about a week you will receive a package in the mail with your ready to cut-and-sew fabric along with instructions and the original PDF pattern with all sizes. Sprout eliminates the need to

use those old-fashioned cut-and-trace paper patterns by printing your pattern right onto the fabric. If you don’t have a sewing machine or the time to sew, Sprout Patterns has a solution for that too. They offer a white glove service where one of their local Sewists will take your fabric and pattern and sew it for you. Now anyone can design their own custom clothes without knowing how to sew! Sprout’s collection of patterns includes clothing for men, women, babies, kids, and even pets, as well as tote bags and other accessories.

According to Sprout Pattern’s Product Development Manager, Nicole Kligerman, social media platforms like Pinterest have inspired people to pick up sewing, designing, and crafting. “They see these amazing designs and DIY projects online, and they are inspired to create something of their own. It’s wonderful to know that collectively we are all motivating one another to create in ways that were not possible, or as accessible before.” For those who are passionate about home décor hop over to Roostery, Spoonflower’s online home décor marketplace where you can find pillows, chairs, napkins, tea towels, and placemats ready-made using fabric created by independent artists from around the world. Check out all of the online shops and be sure to follow each on social media for updates on events, new products, and offers: www.spoonflower.com, www.sproutpatterns.com, www.roostery.com.

When my hair is greasy... I use Baby

Powder as Dry Shampoo. I just apply a small amount of baby powder to my roots and rub into my scalp. The powder absorbs the grease, and since it's translucent, it doesn’t leave any discolouration in my hair. Stephanie, Cary

I use lip balm as brow wax

I just comb my brows into place then apply a small amount of clear lip balm with my fingers Works like a charm and my unruly brows are in place. Jaime, Raleigh

READERS TIPS

I use eyeshadow as eyeliner

I use conditioner as shaving cream

I simply wet an angled brush (to make the color stick) then apply at my lash line. It’s a lot more fun to experiment with different colored eyeshadows then buying all these eyeliners.  Laurel, Durham

I coat my legs with conditioner and shave like normal. I prefer it over shaving cream and actually find that the conditioner protects my skin from the razor burn and ingrown hairs. Courtney, Raleigh

I use moisturizer as a makeup remover I find it is a gentle and effective way for removing makeup. I simply place a small amount of moisturizer on my face, then wipe off with a cotton pad or Qtip. I find even stubborn makeup comes off easily, without irritating my skin. Jessica, Apex

Good Jeans IF YOU’RE WONDERING WHAT’S HOT FOR FALL, ONE THING YOU CAN BE SURE OF IS DENIM! WHILE JEANS MAY BE AT THE HEART OF YOUR WARDROBE, IT CAN BE COMPLICATED AND CONFUSING TO FIND THE PERFECT PAIR. BOOTCUT OR SKINNY? HIGH-WAISTED OR LOW-RISE? FINDING THE RIGHT STYLE TO FIT YOUR BODY CAN BE OVERWHELMING, BUT WHEN ARMED WITH A FEW TIPS, YOU’LL BE ROCKING YOUR PERFECT PAIR IN NO TIME FLAT.

While there are certain styles that are ‘hot’ each season, don’t forget that there are many cuts to choose from. Taking time to find one that will flatter your figure (and NOT give you a muffin top) will be worth it in the long run. Take heed and use these guidelines to steer you in the right direction. Written By Mary Michele Nidiffer. Founder, StyleFinder Boutique, ShopStyleFinder.com 28 | triangle style

Bootcut Jeans

A HOT LOOK AGAIN THIS FALL, BOOTCUT JEANS ARE A CLASSIC.

Who Can Wear Them? Most everyone can wear a bootcut jean. If you have hips, these will create a balanced look. If you want a little help in the booty department, look for a pair with ‘butt-lifting’ technology to round out your curves. How Should They Fit? Pockets should be in proportion with your derriere, not too small and not too big. They should hug your waist, hips and thighs, and the bootcut hem should cover most of your boot/shoe. Beware of bootcut jeans that are too short. How To Wear Them? Bootcuts look best with a fitted top and a longer jacket, paired with your favorite heels, boots or wedges and you’re ready for anything. Choose a higher-rise to avoid any accidental flashing.

Boyfriend Jeans

BOYFRIEND JEANS HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR SOME TIME AND DON’T SEEM TO BE GOING ANYWHERE ANYTIME SOON. A GREAT SLOUCHY WEEKEND FAVE, THESE ARE MEANT TO BE COMFORTABLE AND CASUAL.

Who Can Wear Them? Women of all ages can wear boyfriend jeans, but they look best on women who are slimmer through hips and thighs. How Should They Fit? The boyfriend jean should fit loosely around hips and thighs, but beware they don’t look sloppy. Choose a lower-rise that gently sits on hips. How To Wear Them? Pair them with a more fitted top, or a slightly loose sweater and a cute pair of flats or loafers for a casual, chic look. Cuff them for best effect.

style effortless WITHOUT THE ATTITUDE OR STICKER SHOCK

Skinny Jeans

When these first arrived on the scene years ago, they took the denim industry by storm and became the style everyone had to have. But, like most things, one style does not fit all. Who Can Wear Them? Skinny jeans can look great on fuller figured women because they eliminate bagginess in the legs and create a long, lean line. Most women can wear them, but it’s all about proportion. If you’re curvier, balance them out with a wide cuff, chunky shoes or boots, and wear a longer, less fitted top. If you have heavy calves/legs, this style may not be comfortable to wear. How Should They Fit? Skinny jeans are meant to fit close to the body, but beware they are not too tight. You’ll know they’re too tight when the pull on the backs of thighs and leave wrinkles.

CAMERON VILLAGE 833.1210 WWW.FABRIKSTYLE.COM

How To Wear Them? If you’re curvier, balance them out with a wide cuff, chunky shoes or boots, and wear a top, sweater or jacket that covers your bum. Opt for a higher rise if you’re curvy to steer clear of a muffin top.

Straight Leg Jeans

The precursor of the skinny leg, straight legs have been around for many years and are still a favorite. Not as fitted as a skinny, but not as full as a bootcut, straights are great to wear all year round. Who Can Wear Them? This style looks good on most women. If you have fuller calf/leg this style may be preferable over a skinny leg. How Should They Fit? A body skimming cut, a straight leg shouldn’t be too tight, or too loose. A midrise to high rise will be best. How To Wear Them? Straight legs look great cuffed with flats/loafers and paired with a semifitted top. A few of the denim trends we’re seeing this season include the released hem, patchwork denim, embroidery and slits at the hemline. Find the look that’s right for you and rock your denim like a boss!

STYLE SPOTLIGHT

THE ALLI’S ALLI LEGGETT

Alli Leggett is stepping out on her own. After working with her mom in Cary at their go-to “girlfriends gift boutique”, The Pink Alli, for over a decade, she has learned exactly “what every diva wants.” Leggett has always taken great care of her “dahling” customers and her loyal clients have come to count on her for excellent customer service and quality products especially personalized monogramming and embroidery.

Written By Audrey D. Mark Photography by Deen Harrison, Deen's Vision Photography 32 | triangle style

Now, with her mom retiring, Leggett is going solo and is ready to ramp it up on her own in downtown Raleigh with her new venture; The Alli! Leggett explains, “I loved working with my mom and doing a boutique with her, but for a while have wanted to do something that was a little more urban, with a little more edge.” Leggett is excited that fans of her old location will still be able to find their familiar favorites - and so much more! Leggett is thrilled to be in her new downtown digs. “I love Raleigh! Cities and skylines have always been my jam,” Leggett gushes, “My dream has always been to walk out my front doors and see skyscrapers.” Her new location at 300 W Hargett Street, had been on her radar before it was even available. “I have been obsessed with this space,” Leggett beams about when her realtor showed it to her, “It’s open, with a ton of natural light and beautiful views of the city!” Leggett has always loved both men’s and women’s fashion and The Alli will definitely carry more men's products than she had before. Leggett explains, “I want the new store to be as much for them as it is for women.” She plans to have gifts for everyone with an urban and edgy flair. “I want my guys to know me for being able to help them with their "Sock Game”,” Leggett explains, “ And I want the ladies to bring me all their embroidery!” The Alli will stay true to it’s roots, offering high quality embroidery, heat press and vinyl and will still carry fan-favorite lines such as Lilly Pulitzer, Kate Spade, Scout and Rewined. “The same care for our customers will continue, as well,” Leggett proudly says, “I love the Raleigh community and really want to embed myself in it!” Other items you’ll now be able to find at The Alli include; leather cleaner, grooming kits, jewelry, socks, pocket squares, ties/bowties, gifts, housewares, home decor items, candles, bags and, of course, personalization. “Gift Wrapping will be included,” Leggett explains, “ So that anyone who walks in, can walk out with something they are proud of.” Leggett says that if she had a life motto, it would be, “I Aspire to be a Giver. A Giver of Love, A Giver of Good Vibes & a Giver of Strength.” With The Alli, Leggett is sure to embody all of these principles, and her “dahling divas” will always love her for that!

TIPS AND TRICKS

GET A FLAWLESS AND LUMINOUS COMPLEXION Written By and Makeup By: Kimberly Arnold < Professional makeup artist and beauty expert, Kimberly Arnold, created a beautifully complected base for Raleigh-based fashion blogger, Hailey Porter.

34 | triangle style

Dramatic smokey eyeshadow and cat eyeliner may be the focal point of your makeup, but a flawless and luminous complexion can elevate virtually any look, while emphasizing your eyes. Skin that looks and feels hydrated appears more youthful, both in person and in photographs, and when applied correctly, can instantly take years off the appearance of your skin. PREP WITH THE PROPER SKINCARE Makeup always applies and blends better on hydrated skin. Before diving into your makeup routine, be sure to cleanse your skin thoroughly and apply a moisturizer that’s suitable for your skin type and concerns. TRY A LUMINOUS PRIMER (OPTIONAL): If you feel that your makeup doesn’t last as long, or you’d like an extra boost of luminosity to layer with your base, try a luminous primer. This step will extend the wear time of your look and some primers have additional benefits, like color-correcting, pore refining, hydration and more. CHOOSE THE RIGHT BASE Depending on your skin type and your coverage preference, you want to choose the best type of base for you. • FOR DRY SKIN, try a liquid or creamy base, like tarte Clay Stick Foundation. Drier skin types can handle a heavier foundation that keeps the skin feeling hydrated and soft. • NORMAL SKIN TYPES have more freedom when it comes to choosing a foundation. The Ashley Sievert Mineral Velvet Creme is a great option for all skin types and provides weightless coverage. • FOR OILY SKIN TYPES, try an oil-free foundation, like Urban Decay All Nighter Liquid Foundation.

CONTOUR TO ACCENTUATE THE HIGHLIGHTED PARTS OF THE FACE As an optional step, you may choose to contour your cheekbones to bring more attention to the highlighted planes of your face. Doing so will also add definition to your facial features and create a slimming effect. To contour, apply your contouring product to the hollows of your cheekbones, your temples, and jawline and be sure to blend any harsh lines with a synthetic face brush.

SCOUT & MOLLY’S

APPAREL ACCESSORIES AND MORE

HIGHLIGHT THE PLANES OF YOUR FACE: Apply your highlighter of choice to the peaks of your cheekbones, the tip of your nose, and your cupid’s bow. If you want a more subtle glow or are more prone to oiliness, stick with highlighting just the peaks of your cheekbones. If you have dry skin or prefer a more dramatic glow, you can also highlight your forehead and chin.

LAYER YOUR HIGHLIGHTER FOR AN EXTRA BOOST OF LUMINOSITY (OPTIONAL): If you want more of a pop with your highlighter, opt for a second layer. First, use a cream or liquid highlighter as a first layer, and then set it with a powder highlighter for a bolder glow. SET YOUR MAKEUP WITH A LUMINOUS SETTING SPRAY: Setting sprays are essential for extending the wear of your makeup. If you prefer an even more luminous look, opt for a luminous setting spray, which will keep your makeup looking flawless and dewy all day.

GREEN GOES GREEN EMANI Organic Lip Shine

I am a lip gloss junkie. There, I said it. I have probably spent over $400 in the last few years on lip glosses alone and in the last year, I've switched to organic lip glosses (after all, I AM eating most of what I'm putting on my lips!) With that said, there are a few things I NEED in a lip gloss: awesome color, long wear and most importantly, that it doesn't create that sticky gunk in the corners of my mouth! I can literally check off all three "musts" with EMANI Organic Lip Shine (specifically in the PERFECT shade of Blush) it also does not taste funky, big plus! "EMANI Organic Lip Shine infuses your lips with natural fruit extracts and vitamins to condition while imparting a dewy pigmented glow." It's also vegan and I really like the applicator that

Yep, I drank the Kool足Aid (or, stopped drinking the Kool足Aid and went organic!) After sloooowly transforming my pantry from a preservative paradise to an organic wonderland, I started working on my make足up. Being a beauty product junkie, I was worried about the staying power of these green products but was pleasantly surprised (as was my pocketbook!) These three gems are just a few of my favs that are not only organic but product perfect in my tree足hugging opinion!

gives you a little more lining power than most other puffy tips. I give this healthy lip gloss a SOLID 4.5 Tri-Angles (and I am really tough to please when it comes to lips!) Not a perfect 5 since it is a bit pricey - but hey, you can't have it ALL!

Physicians Formula Organic Wear 100% Natural Origin Mascara

I have super duper sensitive eyes, so ANY product I use on these peepers has to be hypo-allergenic and non toxic. When I started switching to organic make-ups, I tried a few organic mascaras that all seemed to run and create a raccoon effect after a couple hours - not a good look for

this already tired mama! Physicians Formula Organic Wear 100% Natural Origin Mascara is the bomb dot com. It stays on but comes off easily when you take your makeup off and did not make my eyes itch! It comes on black and ultra black I recommend the ultra black (just go for it!). I love the wand, great packaging and my lashes appreciate the 5X lash boost! I'm giving this cruelty-free product another 4.5 TRI-Angles! Going Green ain't cheap or easy but if they keep putting out products like this, organic make-up will dominate the fashion world! At $9.95 you can't beat this eye popping product with a stick!

Organic Surge Overnight Sensation Night Cream

Run to your computer for this next product. I stumbled upon Organic Surge Overnight Sensation Night Cream one fateful night, months ago, while scouring the web. I don't usually quote the ingredients but they are so impressive, here's the list and what each one does for your skin: OVERNIGHT SENSATION NIGHT CREAM CONTAINS NATURAL ACTIVES: • Rose geranium essential oil - helps to restore skin's natural balance and clears sluggish skin circulation • Aloe vera - calms and moisturizes skin • Shea butter - from the fruit of the karite tree, shea butter works to prevent moisture loss from the skin • Natural glycerin - a natural humectant which attracts moisture to the skin, allowing it to remain hydrated and soft. • Grape seed oil - works with skin to address fine lines, puffy areas and rejuvenate dryness or dull skin tone • Green tea - reduces inflammation and acts as natural skin healing agent • Chamomile - comforts and soothes, maintains skin condition Vitamin E - a naturally-derived ingredient with antioxidant properties, helping to reduce skin inflammation or irritation Ummm, yeah at $16.99 (yes, $16.99) do I need to say anything else?!? Wait for it....’cause it doesn't happen often...this baby is getting all FIVE of my coveted TRI-Angles!!! Really, a product that delivers, is healthy AND affordable - Win/Win/Win!

Hi Anna! No matter how much sleep I get or any cream I have tried, I still have bags under my eyes- the horrible sunken, deep kinds of bags. Is there any way to get rid of these? Any kind of treatments? Hoping so. – Rachel Unfortunately, as we age, our skin loses its elasticity and can start to sag. When this happens, it can cause the appearance of under eye bags. These bags can also be related to diet and exercise, allergies, or even be an inherited trait. If you’ve already tried changing up your diet and you know your bags aren’t from allergies, there are some options that could work. Of course, there are eye creams on the market that claim to reduce under eye bags, but in my experience, they generally aren’t as effective as promised. For a more affordable solution with minimal-to-no downtime, I’d suggest the off-label usage of fillers such as Vollure or Restylane under the eyes. These fillers are hyaluronic acid (HA) based, and as HA is a naturally occurring substance produced by our bodies, fillers like these provide a more natural way to restore full and elastic skin. During your consultation, ask about injections using advanced injection techniques, like using a cannula for less bruising and fewer injection points. Keep in mind that filler solutions aren’t permanent; they will only last about 8 months. Make sure you’re getting treated by a skilled injector at a reputable facility for the most natural-looking results. For a more permanent solution, explore your options with a plastic surgeon for a blepharoplasty. A blepharoplasty is an out-patient surgical procedure that involves removing the excess fat under the eyes and then tucking the remaining loose skin. The surgery takes about an hour, and you’ll need two weeks to recover. Luckily, there are solutions for when you need a little more than just a good night’s rest to minimize under eye bags! Landscaping For

PRIVACY LANDSCAPING FOR PRIVACY CAN BE A CHORE IF YOU’RE NOT IN THE KNOW. LOROPETALUM (THE RUBY RED FOLIAGE IN THIS PHOTO TAKEN AT GARDEN SUPPLY COMPANY IN CARY)IS A POPULAR SHRUB USED FOR SCREENING.

If you’re not a garden guru, you may not know that this time of year is actually the best time to plan and plant those trees and shrubs you’ve been thinking about all summer. During the warmer seasons, trees and shrubs are busy producing buds, blooms and fruits. By expelling most of their energy in this process, they don’t have much left for what’s underground. That’s why it’s best to plant trees and shrubs during the fall. This way, during milder weather, they’ll have plenty of energy to devote to establishing a strong root system so that they’ll have maximum foliage later on and less likely to develop disease. No need to book an expensive vacation for the fall when you can instead create your own private re-tree-t space that will be yours to keep as your forever stay-cation. So how do you create a private oasis in a neighborhood full of other people and houses? Plan your landscape for privacy using some of our picks below to maximize your green space. 56 | triangle style

Nellie Stevens Holly Trees keep their deep green foliage all year. Why do we suggest these as accents for the corners of your yard or spaces that need extra screening? They grow up to three feet in just one year in a pyramidal shape (or boxed if pruned) and may reach up to 20 feet tall. Full sun to part shade. Loropetalum is something you’ve seen in many professionally groomed landscapes. You’ll recognize it by it’s deep, ruby red foliage which brings a nice contrast to your mostly green shrubbery. Loropetalum comes in many varieties so you can choose something tall or select a different variety that grows closer to the ground for use as an accent around your borders. Full sun to part shade. Japanese Holly Trees come in many varieties and are a staple for landscapers as they can be pruned for a perfect hedge. Some grow two to three feet and others reach heights of six feet making them a much better buffer between you and your neighbors. Full sun to part shade. Emerald Arborvitae is a commonly used pyramidal evergreen that reaches upwards of 15 feet. Full sun. Christmas Jewel Holly is definitely one we suggest planting if you’re looking for a shrub that will bear holiday trimmings to decorate TRICKS OF THE TRADE Select a place in the yard for your new plants that meets the requirements as shown on the tag. Easy peasy, right? Then dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and no deeper than the pot it came in. Gently break apart the roots with your hands and/or your shovel. Prior to placing your plant in the ground, mix the existing soil with organic fertilizer, cow manure and soil conditioner. BOOK YOUR RE-TREE-T Rather put the shovel in somebody else’s hand? Give us a call or book a Landscape Consultation online. The gardening gurus at Garden Supply Company would be happy to do the digging for you!

your home for the season while providing a screen of up to ten feet. Full sun. Shrubby Yew Pine or podocarpus is an evergreen shrub with a unique leaf structure that looks great as a hedge or planted parallel to a fence line. It grows up to eight feet tall. Full sun to part shade. Crippsii Cypress is not the fastest grower but remember the tale of the tortoise and the hare? If you’re looking for something that will really keep your pad private in the long run, this is your tree. It’s feathery, yellow spray grows up to 12 feet tall. How’s that for privacy? Full sun to part shade. Natchez Crepe Myrtles produce confetti-like white flowers from June to September and have a unique peeling bark that make these ornamental trees even more appealing. Choose these if you’re looking for a quick growth screen with a little pizzazz. Full sun. Azaleas are Southern classics and a musthave in our minds. They’ll keep their lush green leaves throughout the winter and bring beautiful pinks, magentas, peaches or white blooms to your landscape come spring. Filtered sun. Japanese Aralia or Fatsia is the perfect shrub to bring a tropical look into a partially shaded area. It grows up to six feet tall and four feet wide. Partial shade.

TRAINER TALK

Written by: Sydnei Murphy, O2 Fitness Intern, Duke University Track Team

Ready Or Not, Race Season Is Coming! Whether you’re looking to win your division, set a new personal best or start a new fitness journey, try these tips and tricks to help you prep for your next race.

THE RUNNING PART

• ENJOY THE PROCESS Running is a great way to get

active and stay healthy, but the key is to enjoy it! Yes, it’s important to eat right, maintain certain paces or complete training workouts, but it’s equally as crucial to enjoy the process—otherwise you’ll find it hard to find the motivation to keep going. • THE BEST TRAINING MIMICS YOUR RACE We call this the ‘race model.’ Runners are best served by training at their goal race pace. If you want to run a 10K at a eight-minute-per-mile pace, practice miles at that pace. As you get closer to race day, treat your long runs like a dress rehearsal. • GRADUALLY INCREASE YOUR TRAINING MILEAGE

Escalating your training load by too much too quickly can cause injury. When upping your mileage, do so by no more than 10% per week. However, it’s important

to listen to your body. Mileage isn’t everything and there is no clear-cut method that works for every person. • FIND A RUNNING BUDDY To boost motivation, keep you accountable and have more fun during the training process, we recommend getting a running buddy! • STRENGTH TRAINING IS IMPORTANT TOO.

Research has proven that strength training prevents injury and improves overall running performance. A study done by the University of Illinois concluded that after 10 weeks of combining strength with endurance training, leg strength increased by 30 percent and running time improved by 13 percent. To strength train properly, you can see a Personal Trainer, try a Group Fitness class or use our weight and/or functional training area at one of our 24 O2 Fitness clubs.

BEYOND JUST RUNNING

• DON’T NEGLECT THE IMPORTANCE OF SLEEP One

way to make sure you’re getting enough sleep is to follow the minute-per-mile rule. This states that you sleep one extra minute per night for every mile that you run per week. For example, if you run 30 miles a week, sleep an extra half hour each night. • YOUR KICKS MATTER Don’t race in shoes that have reached 500 miles (depending on the type of shoe, your weight and your foot strike pattern). Once they’ve reached their limit, kick them to the curb. To give yourself— and your shoe—the best chance, visit a running specialty store to determine what type of shoe is right for you. • ABS ARE MADE IN THE KITCHEN. Okay, maybe abs aren’t your focus, but the rule still applies—eating properly is 80% of the training process. It’s vital that you’re eating enough calories (and the right calories) before runs, as well as after runs (your diet is a major key to recovery). Pre-run foods should be a combination of healthy carbs and protein, like oatmeal or toast with peanut butter and honey. To recover after your run, stick to foods high in protein that will facilitate muscle regrowth—Greek yogurt, organic chocolate milk or a protein bar. And remember: eat within 30 minutes after your workout to get the full benefit. • STRETCH IT OUT Strenuous exercise can shorten a person's muscles, hindering mobility and proper form over time. Stretching keeps your muscles flexible, thus preventing injury and ensuring that your muscles and joints are functioning at their fullest range of motion.

RACE DAY

• BRING ON THE CARBS A few days before a long race,

emphasize healthy carbohydrates (sweet potatoes, beans, corn, veggies) as you’ll need a longer-lasting energy source during your race. Carbs should take up to 60-65% of your total calorie intake leading up to race day. • STICK TO YOUR ROUTINE ON RACE DAY Avoid trying anything new on or near race day. This includes sleeping habits, foods, drinks, supplements, etc. Don’t risk throwing your body out of whack during crunch time. Start experimenting with new routines now so you know what works for you come race time. • AIM FOR AN EVEN PACE The best way to reach a personal best is to keep an even pace from start to finish. Running too fast too early means you’ll pay for it later. Now you’re ready to train like an elite athlete, no matter your starting level. Keep a positive mindset, set reasonable goals, have fun and use a little Dr. Seuss as inspiration: You’re off to great places, today is your day. Your mountain is waiting, so get on your way!

Specializing in Glo Therapeutics

We’ve all heard about the many ways to eliminate wrinkles, but finding a procedure or product that works can be tricky. What if there was a way to zap those stress lines in under an hour and restore the smooth texture of your skin? SkinPen, by Bellus Medical, is now the market standard in the dermatology world. This non-invasive, adjustable device uses microneedling technology to eradicate age lines and restore damaged skin. What makes SkinPen different from other dermatological procedures is that it utilizes the body’s natural healing response. This medical-grade tool pierces the skin on a micro-level so that it can naturally heal itself with fresh collagen and elastin, the supporting structures in the skin. The microscopic wounds are now replaced by new tissue, leading to a rejuvenated and smooth texture. The benefits of microneedling are numerous, and you’ll find that the results are instant in comparison to face creams and solutions. The SkinPen procedure is effective for all skin types. It causes minimal damage and actually improves skin health. It can be used anywhere on the body, is painless, and has very low risk of infection. The process is quick and extremely effective. If you’ve endured the long search for a product that will erase stress lines that have developed over time, or heal your skin from sun damage or acne, then the SkinPen may just be right for you. Finally, a product has emerged that is safe, shows fast results, and works with your body instead of against it. You will see immediate results and your skin will only continue to improve over the weeks following your procedure. Now you can restore your skin to its healthy glow!

Locals may know of these locations, but with an ever increasing number of people moving to the booming Triangle from out of state, it's not always easy to find fun accessible locations and enjoy all that North Carolina has to offer for those with a taste for adventure. Knowledge is key! Here are a few of our favorite hikes and waterfalls to run off to on any given weekend.

Schoolhouse Falls

Schoolhouse Falls is not a tall waterfall (drops about 20 feet), but it makes up for that in beauty! It's the most popular of the many waterfalls in Panthertown Valley in the Nantahala National Forest, located in Jackson County (55 miles from Asheville). You reach Schoolhouse Falls via an easy 2.5-mile roundtrip hike from the Cold Mountain Gap parking area.(Google Maps) In Panthertown Valley, you will find granite rock domes with 300-foot cliffs, deep gorges, broad valleys, bogs, trout streams and waterfalls.Hike, mountain bike or ride a horse on 30 miles of maintained trails. Camping is permitted. Be sure to have a current map of Panthertown Valley! It is a true wilderness!

Yates Mill

Big Lost Cove Cliffs

Located just south of Raleigh, Yates Mill is the last operating, water-powered gristmill in NC's capital county. The 18th century mill was restored, and the 174-acre park developed, through a partnership among the County of Wake, Yates Mill Associates, and NC State University. Walking trails, geese, beaver houses, and the lake itself make for a picturesque trip. Guided tours offered.

A 3.3 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Newland, North Carolina that features a great forest setting and is rated as moderate. First half mile is strenuous, and it's an 8 mile gravel road drive to find it, but so worth it. Beautiful & secluded. Camping permitted. 62 | triangle style

Road Trip Warriors Have Road Trip Tires Triple Falls

Triple Falls in DuPont State Recreational Forest offers a unique opportunity to stand (or even have a picnic) in the middle of waterfall! A level rock surface allows plenty of room to safely enjoy the views and cascading water. To see this 120-foot tall waterfall, hike one mile roundtrip from the Hooker Falls parking area. Easy hike.

Rainbow Falls One of the most spectacular waterfall settings

in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. This 150-foot tall waterfall is impressive, especially after rainy weather that swells the Horsepasture River. The best feature of Rainbow Falls is the ability for visitors to experience the falls from the front, bottom, side, and top! Located in the Pisgah National Forest, adjacent to Gorges State Park. Be careful of slippery rocks. Please use common sense and do not climb up the rock face, jump from the cliff or wade in water above the falls. Someone dies about every year doing one of those. To reach Rainbow Falls, you'll need to hike 1.5 miles from Gorges State Park at the Grassy Ridge Parking area. Hike is moderate.

Staging And Selling Your House

WHAT NOBODY TOLD YOU UNTIL NOW

You want to sell your house, so you meet with a realtor. You find out what you need to do to stage your house. You learn that you need to de-clutter, depersonalize, clean, and do everything possible to make the house look spacious and inviting. You want to offer potential buyers a vision of their future lives in this home. You've taken notes and formulated your plan, but here are some things nobody has told you yet. — Written by Joyce Carl

64 | triangle style

emotions

You hire a professional stager, or your realtor is giving you some staging tips. Someone decides that your dining room table needs to go on the other side of the room and your living room furniture is arranged all wrong. You hide it well, but inside you are mad and sad. How can this person tell you that you've been living your life in an incorrectly arranged living room? And what about the great meals and gatherings that happened even though the table was on THIS side of the room?

Exceptional Leasing & Management

Services For Property Owners, Builders, Investors, Realtors & Corporate Relocation

Even if you are happy to be leaving this house for another, strong emotions appear when you least expect them. After all, you've done a lot of living here, and you've put a lot of yourself into the arranging and decorating of your home.

fruit boxes

You are supposed to clear out the clutter in your home and make it look spacious. You pretend you didn't have half your countertop covered with kitchen gadgets; you make your desk look like no one ever used it, and so on. The logical course of action is to begin packing these items in preparation for your upcoming move, so you need boxes. You can purchase boxes from a home improvement store or moving company, or you can drive around town asking businesses for empty boxes.

If you can get fruit boxes from your local grocery store, do it. These boxes are sturdy; after all, they have to protect damage-prone fruit. They usually have a top with sides that slide down and completely cover everything except the bottom of the box. This style of lid also means that you can probably get away without taping the boxes shut. A bonus feature is that fruit boxes usually have handles!

the inspection report

You've been trying to get that loose piece of siding to stay put for five years, and you did a pretty good job of it right before you put the house on the market. The house is clean, beautiful, and well staged, and you are looking forward to a little break from the work of it all. Then you get the buyer's inspection report, which says, "Bottom siding on the north side needs to be attached properly," among other things. Patience is a virtue, so it is said. You may have done a superb job cleaning and staging your home, but the work is not done until the buyers are satisfied that any items found during the home inspection are repaired or negotiated into the price. And most likely, something will be found. Even if the roof, siding, electrical system,

furnace, and appliances are in great shape, the inspector might discover that the bathroom faucet started leaking. Expect the unexpected.

you still live here

You want your house to sell quickly, so you try to stage it perfectly. However, until you close on this house and move into another, you still have to live here. It might seem like a good idea to pack away everything that was on the desk, but how many times are you going to need the tape or the scissors in the next few months? You can pack away most of the kids' toys so that their rooms look big and airy, but how will you entertain them while you're trying to pack up the rest of the house and organize a move? You definitely do want to remove some items from your home to stage it well, but be selective. If you can't realistically imagine yourself living without an item until the house sells, then that item isn't one that you want to pack away. Staging and selling a house is an adventure. Go into it expecting some surprises, and keep your eyes focused on the big picture. All the hard work you put into staging your home is going to pay off when the right buyer falls in love with your house.

WRITTEN BY LOU SCOTT It was twenty years ago that I first met Lois. Walking by my house one muggy August afternoon, she suddenly sat down beside me on the bench under my oak tree and told me her husband of forty-nine years had just left her for his secretary. She was, understandably, taking it very badly. I wondered, if this could happen after such a long marriage, was any relationship guaranteed? And if not, how would someone like Lois survive? I wasn’t able to even imagine the pain, to say nothing of the embarrassment, being a divorcee just one year shy of her fiftieth wedding anniversary must be. From that time forward, I intently watched Lois. What would she do? Where would she go? Well—through her almost constant tears--she put one foot in front of the other and just got out her front door. First thing every morning she put on lipstick, brightly colored clothes, and went to St. Paul’s, sitting by herself, not wanting anything more stren-

uous than the company of strangers. Frequently, after church, she would stop by the coffee shop on the corner for breakfast and to read the local paper. And Lois went for walks—sometimes three, four times a day— tapping her cane on the pavement as she went by. In between, usually in the afternoon, she got on a bus and rode it from beginning to end, and back again. At other times, she went to the park to watch children play baseball, hockey, etc. And when her fiftieth wedding anniversary came along, Lois went by herself on the cruise she and her husband had once planned. Later, after she returned, she sat down on my bench once again and, this time, there was a note of triumph in her voice; she had had her celebration. I am still grateful for the lesson Lois taught me: there is always a way to suffer through pain until you finally become indignant it’s still there. Lois persevered. And the way she did that was entirely her own.

EXPERTS SPEAK

STACEY HEFFNER, FABULOUSLY FLAWLESS

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE CHOOSING A PERMANENT COSMETICS PROFESSIONAL

If you've been thinking about getting Permanent Cosmetics, but you aren't sure how to go about choosing the right artist then you are not alone. Permanent Cosmetics (also known as Permanent Makeup, or Micropigmentation) has become so popular that new establishments are popping up everywhere, and knowing how to pick the best of the best is not an easy task. It's hard to know what to ask and what to look for in a Permanent Cosmetic artist, so, we have put together a list of things you need to consider before making your choice. CERTIFICATIONS, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Most people do not realize that the state of North Carolina does not require Permanent Cosmetic providers to hold any specific certifications to perform Permanent Cosmetics (this includes Eyebrow Microblading). Anyone can do it anywhere without passing a test to prove they possess the abilities to perform these procedures and have artistic capabilities. The best Permanent Cosmetic Professionals will have received extensive training from a certifying institution that includes hands on training with an instructor. It is critical that when you do choose a Permanent Cosmetic Professional that they have proof of certification from a reputable institution, and they are not just a practitioner that has undergone an "apprenticeship." Never let a "student" work on you. Don't run the risk of a botched Permanent Makeup procedure. A bad makeup tattoo on your face is permanent until it is removed (if it can be). 68 | triangle style

For delicate corrective procedures such as cleft lip and scars camouflaging, skin repigmentation or areola restoration, often referred to as Paramedical Tattooing, your Permanent Cosmetic Professional should also be certified in Micropigmenation with the American Academy of Micropigmentation, and be a Licensed Paramedical Tattoo Artist. Doctors and nurses who offer Permanent Cosmetics should also have certifications proving that they too have received hands-on, specialized training in Permanent Cosmetics and Paramedical Tattooing. Just because someone is a medical Professional does not mean they have artistic capabilities or in depth knowledge to successfully perform Permanent Cosmetics procedures. The industry of Permanent Cosmetics and Mircopigmentation changes continually, and a true Professional will always strive to do what is best to deliver the best and safest service to their clients by continuously educating themselves. Ask your Permanent Cosmetic Professional if they are up to date on the latest procedures, industry, product, and safety standards.

HEALTH AND SAFETY: Your face and health are at risk for infections and transmission of blood borne pathogens when undergoing any Permanent Cosmetics or Paramedical procedure. That's why Permanent Cosmetic Professionals must follow the most stringent health and safety regulations. Make sure your Permanent Cosmetic Professional holds all of their mandatory certifications and licensure for health and safety standards required by the State and County. The first thing to look for is that the Permanent Cosmetic Professional has a current Tattoo license issued by County Health and Human Services. In order to perform Permanent Cosmetics, Microblading, Paramedical Tattooing, and general Tattooing, each professional artist must hold a Tattooing Permit issued by the State which is renewed annually. This license ensures they are not reusing needles, have proper disposal of waste, completed health-related training, and practices proper sterilization techniques, among other safety considerations. Permits are issued to the individual who will be performing the procedure, and each person should have their own permit. Artists cannot share a permit. If your artist does not hold his or her own license do not put yourself at risk.

fall | 67

Also, all Permanent Cosmetic Professionals must have a certification that they have completed their annual training for the OSHA Blood borne Pathogens standard practices. You can verify they are adhering to the OSHA standards by asking to see their OSHA certification. Licenses and certificates should be posted in a prominent place for you to see. If you do not see any certifications for the technician, ask to see them before they begin any work on you. Just because someone says they are certified doesn’t mean that they are, or that their certifications are up to date. PRECISION AND ARTISTRY: Permanent Cosmetics is not "one size fits all." Each of us is unique, and there are many things for you and your Permanent Cosmetic Professional to consider during your consultation. You may want a particular look, but a true professional and artist will discuss the pros and cons of what you want, the results you can expect, or what may or may not work for you. Your Permanent Cosmetic Professional will take into consideration your particular skin tone and color, the shape of your face, features, as well as the color of your hair when determining the ideal pigment colors that will ensure the best look for you. Permanent Cosmetics should enhance

your look, and make you look and feel your best. And since it is permanent there is no room for guesswork or trial and error. Your Permanent Cosmetic artist should also take measurements for particular procedures. For example, measuring your eyebrows to ensure that they will be proportionate and even. They should show you the measurements and draw on the proposed shape before starting so the two of you can agree on the look and shape. They should also provide you with their artistic guidance to help you achieve your goals while making your look your best. If the technician does not measure your brows, this is a sign that you could end up with less than beautiful results. THE BEST TOOLS: Make sure your Permanent Cosmetic Professional uses the highest quality color pigments for all of their procedures. Such quality products should be tested and proven to be safe, hypoallergenic, and are guaranteed to produce the longest lasting and best results. Lower grade pigments can change in the skin over time due to exposure to sunlight, skin rejuvenating glycolic acids, Retina A, and many other factors. Some colors, such as black, fade more quickly than others and in time procedures need to be refreshed. Some pigments

! m 4m !m m w

can also migrate (leak) past the area of the procedure, making it look streaky or blurry. The types of pigments used can make a huge difference in the end results and longevity of your Permanent Makeup. In addition to the pigments used, your Permanent Cosmetic Professional should have a clean, sterile, wellmaintained pigment delivery system. Ask the technician what pigment delivery equipment they use. You do not want an artist who is using a rotary system. These are typically used for tattoo parlors, not Permanent Cosmetics. Rotary machines can do damage to the skin causing the buildup of scar tissue and Keloids (discolored and raised scar tissue that can grow over time). BEFORE AND AFTER PHOTOS: You wouldn’t choose a plastic surgeon without seeing samples of his or her work. So, apply the same logic to your search for a Permanent Cosmetic Professional. Ask to see photos of past clients so you can get an idea of their style, technique, and overall ability. A good artist should have lots of pictures of each type of procedure they offer. It is also a good idea to read online reviews and check ratings for various Permanent Cosmetic providers, but ask your Permanent Cosmetic Professional for client references too. This helps to assure that the reviews and ratings online are consistent with what previous clients have experienced.

PRICING: We all know “you pay for what you get.” And this couldn’t be truer in the field of Permanent Cosmetics. You should never let price be the determining factor when it comes to Permanent Cosmetics. This is your face, and a bargain price isn't a bargain if the result is less than beautiful. Permanent Cosmetics is not a service to buy on impulse or with a coupon. Don't treat your permanent cosmetic procedure like a trip to a tattoo parlor. Low prices or promotions that just seem too good to be true often speak to a lack of experience of the technician. The end result may not be what you wanted, or worse yet, you may need to find a qualified professional to fix mistakes that are made by a novice, which in the end will cost you more money. CORRECTION POLICIES: Ask the Permanent Cosmetic Professional what their correction policies are. If you receive a service and you unhappy with your results, you will want to know what their commitment to you is to correct it. A true Permanent Cosmetic Professional will always stand behind their work. SET UP A CONSULTATION: Permanent Cosmetics can enhance your beauty and give you freedom from applying makeup every day. Just be sure to do your research and follow these tips before choosing the artist who is going to make you look fabulous. fall | 71

Whether you are at the game, partying in the parking lot at half-time, or keeping the celebration at home, the Tailgate Party is a popular way to go. The convenience, affordability and simple fun are equally abundant either way.

Written by Ann Cathey

As with any other party, preparation is the key. Begin with stocking up on your ingredients. Many dishes can be prepared a day or two ahead of game day, provided there is room in your fridge for proper storage. Some of them may require reheating before serving. Preparation ahead of time not only gives you extra time to party, it also allows the spices and flavors to properly mingle in things like home-made dips or chili. Buffet-style spreads are convenient and easy to prepare for. Mac and cheese, nachos, sausages in sauce, and chili are all great cold-weather offerings. If you're at home, you have your entire kitchen available. If you're in the parking lot, these items are generally easy to heat and transport in insulated containers, such as the crock half of a crock pot.

Chips, dips, popcorn, nuts, sliced veggies, and cold meat and cheese trays are all standard snacking fare. Be sure to have plenty on hand as they will be in high demand. It's often easier to grab snacks by hand than fill up a plate during the hot runs in a game. Be sure you have plenty of coolers with ice for beverages, or lots of fridge space available. Whether your beverages are sodas, tea, or of the more adult variety, you'll want them chilled and readily available. For cold-weather, coffee, tea, cider, and cocoa are sure wins. You might even try flavor additives to spice things up.

When folks turn up early, remember that Tailgating isn't just about the food. Taking friends outside to toss a pigskin or play some tag football, or simply building up suspense with lively discussions over pre-game shows can provide plenty of entertainment in between rounds of hitting the buffet. Tailgate parties are rapidly becoming a game-day staple for many professional and non-pro sports. Be sure yours is a well executed play!

Raleigh’s own Lisa Kaufman, Founder and Creative Director of Scout & Molly’s likes to keep moving. With shops and franchises across the country, Lisa isn’t one to just sit around and kick up her heels…unless of course, she’s on the dance floor. This year she’s stepping out at the Dancing With The Stars Boca Ballroom Battle in Florida, as she helps raise money for the George Snow Scholarship Foundation, one of Palm Beach County’s largest sources of educational grants. Lisa takes us through the experience… when did journey begin…I think it was February when I was at another fundraiser for the George Snow Scholarship Foundation and was overheard saying "One day, I would love to be brave enough to do something like the Dancing With The Stars Boca Ballroom Battle Event!" My husband actually participated the first year, ten years ago and his video blew me away! I didn't know he had moves like that! It was a week after that event that my husband received a call from the founder asking if I would seriously consider dancing this year. I was scared, but also flattered to be asked since they only have

4 female dancers each year- it was an honor and the cause is something I feel passionate about....so I said YES! how did you get involved…My husband has supported this organization for many years and after attending some of their events, speaking to some of the scholar recipients and hearing their stories, I knew that I wanted to be involved in some way. was there a moment of hesitation, or was it instantly lets do it!!?? It was more like "let's do it!" Then after the first dance lesson it was more like "what have I gotten myself into? This is HARD!" I had no idea how challenging it would be to learn how to dance. I have so much respect for professional dancers! when did the practices begin, how often, how long? They began a few months ago and because I'm only in Florida every other week, I load up on those weeks! Lately I've been attending 3-4 days on those weeks I'm there, about 2 hrs at a time. My partner, Sasha is amazing and he is so patient with me. We laugh a lot! I had no idea how stiff I was until I saw myself on a video - so I'm trying so hard to be "softer".

how many dances will you be doing? There's one individual routine and one group dance. Tell us about your partner...Sasha is from Russia. He's only been in the US for a few years. He's an international world ranked dancer and I am in awe of him. He is still learning English so sometimes things get lost in translation especially when it comes to slang words and phrases. We crack up every time we're together, but really, he is SO patient! He is also a new dad which I tease him that he has a new baby at home then comes to work and It's like having a baby there too! (Laughs) would you do it again? I would absolutely do it again. The cause is exceptional and worthy of every ounce of effort and pain that's gone into this experience. The joy from it is far outweighs the pain and fear and frustration of learning. I have developed a new love of dancing too. Finally, what surprised you most about the experience? I'm always humbled by the donations and support from friends, family, colleagues and especially strangers. Getting a $2000 donation from someone you've never personally met but who you inspired in some way is the best feeling ever! I'm so grateful for the experience.

TSM’S LITTLE BIRDIE HAS SOME BIG NEWS...

The Smitten Boutique is Going Mobile

The Smitten Boutique, located in the bustling city of Durham, North Carolina, brings to the table a unique spin on women’s shopping. Nancy McKaig, the mind behind it all, envisioned not only a boutique for women’s clothing and accessories, but a place where people can both shop and have a great time! Her philosophy states that shopping should be an experience that people look forward to. There’s no doubt that she has created just that: A store for women who are smitten by all things beautiful! Customers are delighted with this quaint but dazzling boutique located in the historic Brightleaf district. What sets Smitten Boutique apart from others is that it is also a mobile shop. Nancy’s original vision was to create a more accessible store for those who don’t have time to go shopping. “I've always wanted to have a mobile boutique. As the food truck craze began to explode, I thought that the concept of convenience shopping would naturally translate to clothing and accessories,” said Nancy. In addition to the charming Durham location, Smitten Boutique plans to go mobile and start setting up in other locations. Even with packed schedules, people will have time stop in during lunch breaks.

WRITTEN BY HEATHER S. PARSONS HEATHER@TRIANGLESTYLE.COM September, not January, feels like the start of a new year -little children lined up, eager and well-scrubbed, standing by the bus stop, lugging backpacks almost bigger than they are. A month later, they are knocking on your door, all dressed up and you pretend they scare you into giving them candy. Then comes November and they are toting home cut-out turkeys on construction paper and stories about pilgrims sitting down in harmony with their neighbors.

FOR SEPTEMBER • WINGED MIGRATION, is an amazing documentary: there you are, flying right beside birds during their migration—summer and winter—all around the world. • AWAY FROM HER stars a more beautiful than ever Julie Christie in a sensitive portrayal of a woman with Alzheimer's; a fragile yet surprisingly reaffirming film. • THE LIVES OF OTHERS is a powerful film about a secret agent in Communist East Berlin who spies on a respected playwright, hoping to find something against him-discovering instead he also has a soul sensitive to art and that “order,” not creativity, is anarchy. FOR OCTOBER • THE DEEP END, a thriller about a good mother who thinks her teenage son has committed a murder and is desperate to keep it a secret— from him, the police, and the man who is blackmailing her. • ELEVATOR TO THE GALLOWS is a very clever French film about a man who plans the perfect murder and all goes wrong when an elevator in his building gets stuck and a couple of teenagers steal his car waiting outside. • REAR WINDOW is a riveting film that never grows tiring. It stars James Stewart—a photographer who is bound to a wheelchair, and having nothing else to do, watches his neighbors from a window in his apartment. Believing he might have discovered a murder, Grace Kelly, his fiance, risks her own life to help him find out if he has. FOR NOVEMBER • GOSFORD PARK is an intelligent comedy of sorts, reminiscent of “Upstairs, Downstairs,” about an eccentric mix of guests who gather in an English country house for a weekend of intrigue and self-indulgence. • WAITRESS is a bittersweet, often funny, story about a cheerful waitress and her love affair with making pies and the married obstetrician who delivers her baby. • 51 BIRCH STREET is a documentary that grabs you—about family and how perceptions of one’s parents are constantly shifting. In America a truly heartwarming, beautifully acted film about an Irish family who moves to New York City in search of a better life (the father wants to be an actor) and ends up in a run-down tenement with unexpected friends.
