STYLE STREAMLINE YOUR WARDROBE AND SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE

Quick! You overslept, you have a big presentation and you have just a few minutes to get out the door and start your busy day. What are you going to wear? If the thought of this throws you into a tailspin, you could use some help.

Let’s face it, you’re busy. You barely have time to shop, much less to figure out what to wear. So when you end up spending 45 minutes or more in your closet, only to wind up feeling desperate and frumpy, you know something’s got to give. And that something, my dear, is your wardrobe.

(1)

Discover Your Assets And Attributes Knowing yourself goes a long way in knowing what to wear. Instead of comparing yourself to a friend or allowing a well-meaning (but misinformed) sales associate to guide you, discover what you have to work with and learn to play it to the hilt. When you understand your personal coloring, your body image and your personal style, you’ll unlock the keys that will lead you to clothing and accessories that play up what you love about yourself – making you look fabulous!

Clean Out Your Closet Most women are wearing only 10-20 percent of what’s in their closet. What this means is that they have to wade through heaps of clothing that doesn’t fit, flatter or make them feel good. When you look in your closet and aren’t sure if something fits, or if you even like it any more, it can take way too much time to get dressed. Simplify your wardrobe and ensure you have only items that you can wear right now and that you love to wear and you’ll shave minutes – not to mention stress–off your morning routine.

From the funky to sophisticated, Hayley’s specializes in affordable and dazzling styles for the everyday fashionista.

Create A Wardrobe Strategy After taking stock of your wardrobe, take some time to determine what’s missing. Where are the holes in your wardrobe, and what do you need to bring in to make your clothes work for you rather than against you. Knowing what you have, what you need, and exactly how it’s all going to work for you over the next few days, months, years, etcetera will go a long way in helping you create a wardrobe you’ll love and ensuring that you’ll always have something to wear. (4)

Create Clothing Capsules Start with a half dozen to a dozen items and lay them out on your bed. Make as many outfits as possible with them, including shoes

and accessories. This is where focusing on one or two core colors and two to three accent colors translates to less is more. Fewer colors mean more things will go together and will result in more outfits. (5)

Create a Lookbook I do this for my clients to give them a quick reference guide that helps make getting dressed in a flash easy-peasy. It's a no brainer when you can look up your outfit (including shoes and accessories) and know exactly what to wear to knock 'em dead whether in a meeting or the carpool lane. Simply make outfits that are new to you, take pictures and print them out. This is a quick reference guide that gives you some direction on those days when you’re really pressed for time.

Know Your Personal Style Honing in on what exactly your style truly is can go a long way in saving you money and getting dressed easily. When you have a signature look that brings out your best each and every day, you create consistency, credibility and confidence! You also stand out from a crowd for all the right reasons. My proprietary StyleFinder™ System will help you to pinpoint what your style is and know exactly what to wear for you. This can help you zero in on what’s a good fit and what you should skip altogether. (7)

Go Shopping Make your list, have a plan, and go alone. Buy only what's on your list and only if it meets these criteria: • The item fits me very well, or I can easily have it altered (and am sure I will) • The item goes with at least three items I already own • The item is well made of quality fabric • The item can be worn for more than one season • I love it and can't wait to wear it! Taking time to build a wardrobe that's filled with clothing that is right for you and can easily be made into new outfits will pay you back in dividends. You'll be assured that outfits are ready at a moment's notice and will leave you feeling chic no matter how much – or how little – time it takes you to get dressed. TS

White on white. Why not? This year, fashion's latest trend will be all about black and white ensembles. Simple. Classic. Fresh. You can't really go wrong here. Black has a slimming effect, while white offers a clean palette. When trying to slim down certain portions of the body, remember to always stay away from horizontal stripes. Instead go for color blocking. Maybe a white blouse and cropped black coat with white slacks? Black stilettos sealing the deal. A white coat thrown over well fitted jeans or a little black dress, will have the same effect. When playing with proportions, make sure everything is fitting your body correctly. If the coat or jacket is loose, swingy or long, make sure the other pieces you choose to wear are a bit more snug. Never wear all of your pieces on the baggy side at the same time, this will look sloppy. Instead play with proportions. Tight versus loose can go a long way. And don't forget about accessories, from your heels to your clutch and the jewelry in between. Since black and white is such an easy palette to work with, adding in sparkly studs or dangling earrings is a piece of cake. Also, eye engaging jewels and chunky statement necklaces are also making a come back.

WHY I LOVE THIS OUTFIT... Any time I get the chance to wear these boots, I take it. I liked the idea of wearing them with a thigh grazing coat. The palette was all about white this time. Skinny jeans in a light wash and black accents finished the look. The chunky choker necklace is reminiscent of Madonna's eighties hey days. Wearing it with classic pieces makes it chic again. The glittering orbs dangling from my ears could easily become the focal point. I'm a fan of how they're both gold and silver all at once. Great for a cocktail dress and gala attire, too. The final touches being my slouchy black leather Balenciaga bag and lips that pop in red MAC lipstick. Voila!

I like to think Miranda Kerr inspired my look. Subconsciously or consciously, she has a way of taking classic pieces and mixing them with a few unexpected twists. Always chic, but also thought provoking. I just wish I had her salary (and closet!) Then, it would really be easy to dress for every soiree, event and rendezvous with the girls! The panda stripes on this jacket mirrored the skirt and boots perfectly. I like how indoors, I can remove my jacket and still look pulled together. Every girl needs a little white blouse in her wardrobe. Fit is key. And how can you go wrong with a leather mini skirt? I would normally pair this short skirt with black pumps or heels of some sort. I wanted to completely eliminate the box by choosing suede ankle boots in a neutral beige color. What's the fun of dressing up, if you can't keep the masses guessing? My dream is to one day be able to dress and style the stars. As long as I can have access to the dream inducing designers and the most coveted pieces and accessories, I could vicariously live with playing dress up through my clients. Never give up on your dreams or your passions. If you can dream it, you can do it! Rachel Zoe is a prime candidate. She started her career as an intern for Seventeen magazine. Now, she has the privilege of styling some of the most recognizable celebrities. I started styling in my closet, later creating my fashion blog (www.fashionchalet.net) and hope to one day jump to bigger and brighter styling opportunities.

WHY I LOVE THIS OUTFIT... It's always exciting when the weather warms up enough to bare some leg. Yet, if it's still a bit too chilly for you, but you still dare to bare... layers will always work in your favor. A snug button up, tucked into this leather mini skirt did just the trick. For added warmth, this fuzzy jacket kept me cozy. The beige suede ankle booties were the final touch. I would wear this look running around New York attending the many different Fashion Shows at the Lincoln Center. It's always a plus to find shoes with a heel that I can actually run in, not to mention, actually walk around in.

She's the hostess with the mostess on NBC's hit reality show “Biggest Loser” and the unpredictable blond bombshell, Sami, on long running soap Days of Our Lives. Juggling two hit television shows and motherhood would take it's toll on any woman, but Alison Sweeney handles herself with grace and poise and looks amazing doing it all. She even has a new book “The Mommy Diet”, that focuses on helping women before, during and after pregnancy to form a healthy mind and body. This lady does it all! So what is her secret? Right off the bat, you look amazing! What are a few of your beauty secrets and do you have any “can't live without” products? My top beauty secrets are to always wear sunscreen, drink lots of water and get plenty of sleep. These days I can't live without my Aquaphor. My lips are so chapped because of the dry winter atmosphere; I have to constantly reapply! Luxury Color,

How would you describe your style? I love having fun with different looks. The fun things about playing Sami on Days of our Lives are all the outfits I've worn over 20 years (fashion really has changed). And on The Biggest Loser, I love to get dressed up and celebrate the accomplishments of the contestants each week during weigh-ins. When I'm not working, you'll usually find me in a pair of jeans, a sparkly top, and a pair of comfortable flats.

Keeping up with kids and working overtime has to take its toll on you. Could you share a little advice about keeping it “together” and looking great? Well thank you. None of us working moms have it easy, but I try to do the best I can every day. I don't get caught up in all that I have [on my plate] for a month, just for today and tomorrow. That helps me to focus on giving 100 percent to whatever I'm doing in the moment – both when home with my family and when at work. But as exhausting as it can be, that's why it's so important for me to keep up with my nutrition. Being healthy allows me to be there for everyone else in my life.

Given the impact and influence of The Biggest Loser, how do you feel about the show taking on child obesity this season? It's obviously such an important issue for our country and for the world. On a personal level, I see kids all the time who are struggling with obesity and I think it's so important to start talking about it and really figure out what we can do as a community and a society to heal our kids.

Since you are celebrating 20 years on Days of our Lives, what has it been like to work in the shrinking soap opera world, and at the same time in the expanding market of reality TV? You know, it's tough. I'm not going to lie, it's hard to say goodbye to shows that have been on the air for so long and I have such loyal fans that I can only imagine what it's like for the fans of the shows that have had to say

Page 3

goodbye. These are characters that you have seen for sometimes over forty years – and they feel like family. But for us at Days, we have really embraced the challenge: tried to stay relevant and current, and give our fans a reason to keep watching and the network a reason to keep re-signing us. We hope to keep fighting, and keep entertaining our audience for a long time to come. So, we're looking at it like a challenge and we hope to keep going.

You wear so “many hats” on a daily basis. Why do you like to stay so busy and have your fingers in so “many pies”? That's a great question because it's true; I do a lot of different stuff. Most recently I've started directing at Days and that's brought a new level of expectation for me, creatively. I think that's the answer – I love being busy and trying all these new things! It just keeps me going creatively and always challenges me. It's something new and different and

exciting. I think that there's something really fulfilling about always feeling like it's a new day and it's something new and challenging to keep me on my toes.

When you first signed on with The Biggest Loser, what were your expectations and how long did you think that this gig would last? I was a fan of the show before they approached me to be a part of it. So I loved the idea of getting to host the show. I love what they do, I love the stand they're taking – we are taking on obesity. I really thought that the show had legs right from the beginning because it really touches your heart in a way just beyond even the issue of weight loss. It touches you in the belief that anything is possible if you set your mind to it, and that no matter what your adversity is, no matter what your obstacle is in life – if you really do the work, it pays off. There's something so redeeming and inspiring about knowing you can change that I just knew America would continue to want to see those stories again and again.

Yikes!

it’s bathing suit season FINALLY…

BRA SIZED SWIMWEAR!

Written By Ruth Dowdy, The Bra Patch If you are like most women the thought of shopping for swimwear is almost as dreaded as a visit to the dentist. These days it doesn’t have to be. Many of the top bra manufacturers now make swimwear in “bra sizes”. In the past if you happened to be, let’s say a size 12, you would have to somehow make your body fit into the same size 12 suit whether you were an A, B, C, D, or DD bra size. Who thought of that...a man? Manufacturers are now beginning to realize that women need a bathing suit that will give them support the same way a good bra does. The concept that “full cup” doesn’t always mean “full figure” is finally being recognized. Today’s swimwear is made to actually fit and flatter all different body types. Let’s face it, women are tired of wearing a basic black suit because it’s the only thing they can find that might kind of fit. When looking for swimwear, consider these things: If you have always been a one piece woman, consider the two piece tankini which can give you the same coverage in the tummy area that a one piece does, but because it is two pieces you have the ability to buy a different size top and bottom. Many of the manufacturers are now offering 2 or 3 different bottom styles to coordinate with the tops.

< Full Figure Swim bra sizes ranging from 36-46, up to HH cup • Tankini tops size 16-26 30 | triangle style

2/18/13

10:38 PM

Average w/ full“er” cup Sizes ranging from 32-40, some cup sizes up to J One manufacturer of plus size swim is making an actual swim bra, which is essentially the top of a two piece suit. It is made to fit and support just like a regular bra does, but it is made from swimsuit fabric and has a decorative swimsuit closure on the back band. Once you have this swim “bra” they offer many different tankini tops to go over it. You can choose to wear it alone as the top of a two piece, or under a tankini top. It’s ingenious…why didn’t I think of that!

Most women that face challenges in finding swimwear that actually fits, fall into three main categories: • THE PLUS SIZE WOMAN This is the women that I described earlier. She is the perfect customer for the “swim bra” concept. After finding the right fit in the swim bra, the rest is easy. Just choose the color and design of the tankini top that suits your taste. Decide on the bottom style you like best and you are good to go.

• THE AVERAGE SIZE WOMAN WITH A FULL”ER” CUP These are women that you see all day long, everyday and would never realize that they

Page 2

Small Frame w/ full“er” cup Sizes ranging from 28-38, some cup sizes up to JJ

would have so much difficulty finding bras or swimwear that fit. Traditional swimsuits don’t have anything more than a “shelf bra” built into them. That’s just NOT enough. Just as with an everyday bra, these women need more support. Thankfully, some of the manufacturers that produce bras in the smaller to average band sizes with fuller cups have recognized that women need more support and have designed most of their swimsuits with an underwire cup just as their actual bra has. This swimwear is beautiful, fashionable and comes in one piece, two piece and tankini options.

• THE SMALLER FRAME WOMAN WITH A FULL “ER” CUP She is typically a younger woman with a very small torso that just can’t find a swimsuit that is cute, hip, age appropriate and that she is not hanging out of. Look no further. These suits fit and cover what is needed but they are definitely NOT granny suits! There are many styles from tiny weeny bikini’s, to tankinis that will satisfy the young and the young at heart. The Bra Patch 1603 N Market Dr Raleigh (919) 876-8677 www.thebrapatch.com

THE GREAT MAKE-UP BREAK-UP FROM FOUNDATION TO FINGER NAIL POLISH, HERE ARE THE RULES WHEN IT COMES TO BREAKING-UP WITH YOUR MAKE-UP

We ALL do it. Even though we know it's way past time to say good-bye, we hang onto that last little bit of dried up face paint until one day, it's gone! 99.9% of all women go through this difficult break-up every year, but when it comes down to staying healthy, it is worth the toss. FOUNDATION Beginning with the base of your make-up; if your foundation contains a pump then it will last longer, but if you use your fingers to dip and apply each day, consider 6-8 months your foundations life span. Especially if you suffer from breakouts and acne, it is important to replace this type of make-up ideally at the six month mark and no longer than eight months. Think in seasons, you are likely more pale in the winter and spring, and a little more tan in the summer and fall – so these are easy ways to remember to replace your every 6 months. EYE MAKE-UP One of the most important make-up to keep fresh is eye make-up. Many pros recommend tossing liquid eyeliners and mascaras every three months. While most of us will not follow those rules, make sure that you replace at least every 6 months to be safe. If you have any issues or infections of the eye, toss your eye make-up immediately, no exceptions here! Eyeshadows can last up to 4 years while pencil liners are usually good between one to two years if kept stored properly – extend use by sharpening your pencil each time you use it. The same rules apply for brow pencils, which will actually keep longer than anything you would use directly on your eye.

POWDERS, BLUSHES AND BRONZERS

UP

Any type of face powder is good for a year or just over as long as there is not a shiny buildup on the pressed powder and you haven't noticed any changes in your skin. If your powder starts to smell or looks different, get rid of it! Chances are good that your powder won't last a year anyway, so renewing shouldn't be difficult to remember. Bronzers and blushes are actually good for right around FOUR years if brushes used are clean and you keep it covered properly.

NAILS AND LIPSTICKS There is a little less to worry about when dealing with nail polish. 2 years is the average for these bottled beautifiers unless you get a nail fungus or infection. Even if your polish starts to separate, just shake hard to keep it usable. Contrary to popular belief, lip products are good for years! Any lip products from lipsticks to liners are generally good for around 2 years. Like powder, you will likely use these products up before they go bad. One rule of thumb when it comes to lip glosses, if you use your gloss while you have a cold, fever blister or infection, toss it! These germs just incubate

in that little tube and grow over time into something that you do not want to put on your lips.

LOTIONS AND CLEANSERS Lotions and cleansers are thought by most people to be one of those products that last forever, but surprisingly, they are not! If you still have product left after six months, you should throw it out. The reason behind this is that most of these items are water based which makes them more prone to bacteria growth – not something you want in a product that you use multiple times a day!

PERFUME Another misconception is that perfume gets better with age. My mom had the same bottle of perfume for over 15 years and would just dab on a tiny bit a day! Unfortunately, perfume has around 12-18 months of “prime time” use. Thanks to heat, light exposure and time, the

ingredients break-down. The best way to keep perfume fresher, longer is to store it in the fridge – this will extend the life of your fragrance and keep you cool each time you apply!

LAST, BUT NOT LEAST Common sense rules in the end, so if your make-up looks or smells strange, then it's a good indication that it is time to throw it out. When in doubt, toss it out! Never ever share eye or lip products! Make sure that you keep brushes and sponges clean and new by using a little dish soap and water every month. If you are using make-up that contains anti-aging products, these will go bad faster than regular beauty products. The nose knows, so smell your make-up before applying to make sure it's not time to break-up with your make-up. TS

street style WHAT WAS YOUR NEW YEARS RESOLUTION AND HOW IS IT GOING SO FAR...

I have become much more health conscious during the last year, and in addition to eating more healthily, I am also making an effort to drink more green tea, due to the variety of health benefits that can be gained. While my favorite teas are usually black teas such as Earl Grey or Barry's Gold Tea, I have come to really enjoy certain green teas as well, such as a Japanese Sencha and others. I've also added more green tea and oolong selections to the menu at The Lucky Teapot Traveling Tea Parties, to give our customers more choices as well as appeal to those also wishing to drink a healthy yet flavorful tea. Other resolutions I have made are to just live in the moment and try and to appreciate each day and focus on the good things in my life. — Sonya Kessman The Lucky Teapot

Every Year I do make a resolution both in my business and in my personal life. It starts with one resolution and thru out the year I add more resolutions and goals I want to achieve. This year personally I am focusing on over all good health and to be at my best. Every New Years day I make a vision board because I need to see what good health looks like for me. I break it down into categories; Health, Work, Travel, Family etc. I sit with a cup of tea and I spend the day cutting out pictures of fruits, vegetables, exercising, meditation, relationships, maybe Italy this year? I have the vision board with my resolutions where I can look at it every day. My resolutions then just become a part of my life, who I am and not something I am going to do for one year. If I am feeling good physically and mentally I am at my best and when you are at your best it has to translate into your work and all other areas of your life. It is a constant work in progress! — Lisa Rivoli. joule salon

Typically, I don't make new year's resolutions but this year i did decide to make an effort to be more environmentally friendly or "green". I am trying to be conscious of this on a daily basis in all aspects...buying more products that are made from recycled materials, using less paper products around the house, taking my own cloth bags to the grocery store instead of using plastic ones and trying to teach my two boys the importance of recycling. I am even implementing a new policy at Scout & Molly's of Cary that I feel will help a little! if customers bring back in their Scout & Molly's of Cary pink cloth bags to be re-used, they will receive 10% off of their purchase! :-)

After many years of failed resolutions, I promised myself this year would be different. As if getting healthy isn't motivation enough, I am getting married in September! Any time I've had success in life, I have always have a structured plan. To be successful this year, I, with my fiancee sit down every Sunday and plan our meals for the week as well as our workouts at the gym. The key to my success is having a partner who holds me accountable! — Kayla O'Connor Joint Venture Jewelry

— Abby Roberts Scout and Molly’s of Cary

My New Year's style resolution was to stop staying up all night on fashion blogs and invest in more beauty rest. After all, I need my wits about me in the fast paced world of designer resale! Also, wear less cat hair. My resolution is currently on hold for Fashion Week(s). And cat hair? That's a new trend, right? — Chandler Mills Nora and Nicky’s spring | 41

Sojourn, a haircare line backed by the cachet of co-founder Elan Sassoon, promotes the idea of “positive chemistry,” a concept Sassoon and his team arrived at by studying hair at its optimum natural state. Another factor Sojourn takes into account is one of hair’s natural building blocks: keratin. Incorporated into each product in the line, Sojourn’s Keratin Cashmere Protein works to moisturize the hair cuticle from the inside out, preventing split ends and other breakage. And if all that isn’t enough, the line is also 100% biodegradable and free of parabens, formaldehyde, sulfates, and artificial dyes and colors. Try it out today! NEW AGE ETIQUETTE

SOCIAL MEDIA MANNERS FOR TODAY’S BUSY WOMAN

Watching your p’s and q’s in today’s electronic ethos can be a challenge. We’ve all seen people do some pretty unconventional things online or while using their phones. Observing proper etiquette is defined as the form or manner typically acceptable or required in society or a profession. Don’t be a Missed Manners – being savvy is more than just being polite. And as the internet and other dynamic methods of communication are constantly evolving, following are some guidelines for navigating today’s on-the-go social culture with style and grace.

Based on a recent survey, Facebook is the gold standard of social media. In a nutshell, it’s a social utility that re/connects friends. Although dashboard settings change a little too regularly for some, there’s no better way to see pictures of what your old roommate had for lunch. • Replying To Comments When friends take the time to comment on your posts, feel free to reply – especially if a question is asked. Acknowledgement is a great way to interact and share with your followers. • Over Sharing Some friends feel the need to update their status every ten minutes. Like you need to know the last time they were intimate, what kind of homework they’re supposed to be doing, or enjoy pictures of their feet. We all do this from time to time, but the over sharer goes into too much detail and it becomes mundane. Rather share something interesting about yourself or your week. • Friending/Unfriending Connecting with current and long-lost friends, family and colleagues is a wonderful thing. But if the over sharer becomes too much, it’s okay to prune your list. If you can’t in good conscience make a public break, simply hide them from your newsfeed.

• Venting Never talk smack about your job online. Even with the most stringent privacy settings, there’s always the risk that your post will reach the wrong eyes and ears. Although everyone is entitled to their opinion, flaming others is also a bad move and very unprofessional. Cool off before saying something in haste that will live on the internet forever. • Messaging You know the old saying ‘the walls have ears’? The same can be said for your Facebook wall. If you intend to share particulars of a meeting date and time, or other personal info that needs to remain private, opt for a message versus public post. Friends on both sides of the details will thank you.

EMAIL Today’s email messaging exceeds telephone traffic and is the dominant form of business communication. Some spend a large portion of their day sorting through new posts, however, so be considerate and evaluate the necessity of your exchange before hitting the Send key. • Standard Formatting Assists Your Reader The subject field should always indicate content and purpose using sentence case. Don't write "Hi!" or "Stuff from Ben." A meaningless subject will not help the reader categorize or follow up on your query. AND USING ALL CAPS LOOKS AS THOUGH YOU’RE SHOUTING. Include a signature line with your contact information to ensure a timely reply. • Keep It Brief Use proper grammar and get to the point. Concentrate on one subject per message whenever possible. And always summarize long discussions or message strings (but don’t change the original author’s wording or punctuation … that’s how “Let’s eat, Grandma,” became “Let’s eat Grandma.”) • Watch Your Tone Email communication cannot convey verbal nuances such as sarcasm. Unless your audience knows you well, avoid difficult expressions. Some use emoticons to infer tone of voice – but do so sparingly so as not to appear goofy or unprofessional. A smiley will never diffuse a difficult construct.

• Don’t Be An Inbox Clogger Group emails: If the topic of an original message changes, create a new email instead of replying to the one that was sent to everyone, thereby avoiding a resend to individuals who no longer are involved in the chain. Trim the message to only pertinent data, and limit the use of Reply All unless necessary. • Not An Excuse To Avoid Personal Contact Never underestimate the value of face-to-face communication; email is not always appropriate. Speaking with people directly can sometimes be the most efficient way to resolve a situation.

CELL PHONES Although one of the most modern conveniences to date, cell phones can invade dinner tables, classrooms and even bedrooms. Consumers bombarded by calls and texts – from those they know as well as solicitations from those they don’t – are learning to establish boundaries. • Give Yourself Some Space To ensure your privacy and everyone else’s, try to establish a 10 foot parameter from crowds when chatting on your phone. This is especially true in enclosed spaces where your voice carries. • Keep It Down Voices escalate when we’re excited or angry, so remember not to talk too loudly during a call. And never put your phone on speaker in a public venue. • Learn To Text Texting is a great option when you are unable to answer a call. Use the vibrate feature rather than an audible alert, never send while walking or driving, and limit use during gatherings for work or play.

7:29 AM

Page 4

Multi-Tasking Not Always a Good Idea Although texting can be quick and dirty, it’s never smart to do it while simultaneously interacting with people or events. Major pet peeves include using your phone in a movie theater, during dinner, in hospitals or on planes. • Quick Fix Many mobile devices include a side button that will immediately silence all ring tones. If you accidentally leave the ringer on in an inappropriate situation and calls come in, flip that switch as quickly as possible.

TEXT MESSAGING Texting is the most informal form of communicating and should only be used for short bursts. It’s recommended that you think of texts as preludes or follow ups to actual conversations – not the conversations, themselves. • Identify Yourself If you reach out to someone who doesn’t already have your number, open by saying who you are.

This is especially important with colleagues and business associates; it avoids confusion and makes you look more professional. • Confirm It! Got plans? Send a quick text to confirm or provide last minute details. If you’re going to need more than 160 characters or are pressed for time, however, it’s always better to call. Offers to create or end relationships (business or personal) should never be done by text. • Don’t Leave Me Hanging Volleying notes back and forth supposes that a quick response is expected. If you go silent for an extended period of time without warning, that tends to rub people the wrong way. Be courteous of the person left hanging. If your reply will take additional time, pick up the phone.

• Like Email… It’s surprisingly easy for your tone to be misinterpreted. You’re not writing the great American novel. Quick and to the point is all you need. • Unlike Email… Never text after bedtime. If your recipient forgets to turn their ringer off before turning in, you may wake someone up at a crazy hour when their phone alerts them of a new message. Try explaining that one to your boss! There is, of course, no such thing as concrete regulations for spontaneous social interactions because communication – and its rules – are always in a state of flux. The excitement of upgrades will in turn necessitate a new way of doing things. We adapt, as do our expectations and manners along the way.

The marvel of what electronics can do should always be tempered with respect for the damage they can cause if not used properly. The rule of thumb is: if you don’t want someone to see or hear what you have to say, don’t say it. Find the right balance, though, and these tools can make you both efficient and adept at managing your weekday to weekend with ease. TS

STOP IDENTITY THEFT: Don’t Let Bad Things Happen To Your Good Name

Written By Audrey D. Mark 62 | triangle style

Imitation may indeed be the sincerest form of flattery - but when it comes to identity theft, it's a flat out crime! With just the smallest amount of basic information, a crook can do bad things, all in your good name. We leave paper trails and digital droppings everywhere we go, so even if your purse has never left your person, a thief can easily find ways to fraudulently order merchandise, open credit cards, operate a vehicle, even “own a new home, all while impersonating you. What is most frightening is that it could be going on for years before you ever find out about it - and then it can take even longer to get it straightened out. Tell tale signs that you may be one of the nine million Americans facing an identity crisis of your own include getting confusing calls from creditors and debt collectors about accounts you've never heard of or being unexpectedly turned down for a loan or line of credit for which you should easily qualify. Perhaps odd credit cards or items that you didn't order start showing up at your door or you find that your personal checks are inexplicably being declined in stores that you've shopped at for years. Identity fraud can be frustrating and farreaching, especially today when anything other than a perfectly clean credit report can mean higher interest rates, lowered credit lines, even the loss of a potential job. But don't despair! While nothing is foolproof, there are several ways to deter even the most determined criminals and to help safeguard your personal security if you just take a few precautions.

HOME SAFE HOME: • Don't let your trash become an identity thief's treasure. Use a crosscut shredder to systematically destroy everything you throw out that has any of your personal information on it. Be sure to shred all of your discarded bank statements, credit card bills and offers, utility bills, old receipts, computer disks and boarding passes. All unopened junk mail should also be spring | 63

TSM Identitytheft:TSM Beauty Myths

2:25 PM

shredded, because it may contain sensitive information about you that you didn't know was in there. • Don't leave a special delivery for a wouldbe crook. Even in the safest neighborhoods, avoid leaving your mail in an unlocked mailbox for an extended period of time. Mail containing checks can easily be stolen and tampered with and your bills can reveal a lot of private information that could be misused. Consider dropping your outbound mail off at an official USPS box, instead of leaving it out front waving a red flag. If you don't have a trusted friend or neighbor to collect your mail while you are away on vacation, be sure to visit www.usps.com to put a hold on your mail until you return. • Be your own watchdog and keep track of all your outstanding credit card applications and renewals to make sure that they arrive in a timely manner. To be on the safe side - go ahead and order your new cards with the

Page 3

added photo-ID protection on them for even more security. Consider having your new check order delivered directly to your bank and pick them up in person. • Hang up on phone fraud. Never give out passwords, account numbers or personal information to anyone on the phone, unless you know exactly with whom you are speaking, especially if you did not initiate the call. Don't worry about being rude –any legitimate business person will understand if you ask to first verify his or her credentials before you call back. Don't hand over your credit card numbers or check routing information when being solicited for telephone donations, instead ask to have the information mailed to you to look over more thoroughly. If you are getting lots of unsolicited phone calls, you may want to have your telephone number unlisted or entered with just your initials or a code name.

• Every penny counts, and it's important to carefully look over your monthly bank, credit card and utility statements. Be on the lookout for even the most minute fraudulent charges. Often identity thieves will initially place a charge for mere pennies on an account just to make sure the card works. Report any discrepancies right away, as each industry has its own limits on liability. • Make it your business to regularly monitor your moniter. You can find out what the three major reporting agencies are saying about you. You can even do it without subscribing to their costly alert programs. Visit www.annualcreditreport.com and each quarter you can order a different copy of your credit report from Experian www.experian.com, TransUnion www.transunion.com, or Equifax, www.equifax.com -all for free. You won't get your FICO score, but you will be able to see if there are any reporting errors on your account that need to be addressed.

USE A SAFETY NET If something smells phishy online, don't fall for it hook, line and sinker! Computer savvy sharks out there can send out spam and popups with offers from very legitimate looking sites - but these will lead to nothing but a whale of a problem for you. Report any suspicious email directly to the “spoofed” organization and never enter PINs, passwords or any other personal information by clicking on an email that has been sent to you. Always open a new browser and re-enter the web address that you are interested in, regardless of how real it looks. To verify that you have made a secure and encrypted connection, make sure that the URL starts with “https://” and not just with http://. Be sure to enter your web addresses carefully, because those nasty predators out there prey on our poor typing skills.

Sorry, but you didn't win any foreign lottery; that chain letter won't bring you riches, and you can be of no help to that mysterious Nigerian dignitary - so please don't respond to those emails. These are scams. Period. If you feel like you've been caught up in a web of lies-you can report incidents of Internet crime to www.cybercrime.gov. Keep your Top-Secret secrets secret. Be sure that all of your computers at home, and at work, are protected with up-to-date antivirus programs, spyware scanners and formidable firewall security. Password protect any computers that can be accessed by others, and change this password often. Avoid easy-to-figure–out codes: such as your pet's name; your middle name; your mother's maiden name; or other easy-to-decipher things and numbers (like your birthday). For maximum security, use a combination of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and shift key characters. Don't store these passwords any where on or nearby your computer, especially if it is connected to the Internet. What happens at the library - doesn't always stay at the library. Avoid doing online banking or visiting password protected sites from public computers, as hackers can add spyware or keystroke programs and potentially steal your personal account information. If you do frequent Internet cafes or use other public computers, it's important to change your passwords frequently - and do not carry them, written out clearly, in your wallet.

PUBLIC PRIVACY • Careful what you carry! Don't keep your social security card in your wallet. If you must have it with you, make a copy with the last four digits deleted, and keep the original safe at home. Ask for a new ID number if your oldschool health insurance card still has your social on it.

• Spread yourself a little thin - by carrying your ID in different locations. This way if your purse or wallet is stolen, they won't get everything. Avoid carrying your checkbook and NEVER have your checks printed with your social security number on them! • Be a copycat and make a photocopy of the entire contents of your wallet - front and back. It's a quick and easy way to have a list of all of your credit cards, phone numbers and ID cards, just in case they go missing. Keep this in a safe place at home and make sure that you make copies of any new cards as you get them. If you're traveling, you may want to leave a copy securely stored with a responsible friend or relative.

• You asked for it! Help prevent identity theft by simply signing the back of your credit cards with “Ask for ID”! This minor inconvenience can help prevent a major catastrophe. And don't forget to be supportive of all those cashiers who insist on asking for it! If you feel that your identity has been compromised, it is important to act quickly. Log onto the Federal Trade Commission's website, www.ftc.gov to initiate a complaint that you can take with you to your local police department to file an Identity Theft Report. There is a wealth of information online for people who have had their identity stolen. Start with a visit to the North Carolina Department of Justice, www.ncdoj.com/idtheft or www.identitytheft.org and www.idtheft.gov for more information.

WHAT’S IN A RUG? By Stephanie Finucane, Owner of The Right Hue, LLC

See this article and more at my new blog therighthue.com

When it comes to selecting a paint color, do you freeze like a deer in headlights? Don’t panic. Look around the room. More specifically, look at your rug. I’m not talking about your wall-to-wall carpet, although it definitely plays a role. I’m talking about the rug that you picked out at the store. The one that you struggled over, compared to a few others, but found it to be “the one.” Rug shopping is kind of like clothes shopping. You pick out something that meets your style, mood and color. It’s a big deal. According to the experts at HGTV, rugs rank third (in cost) among homeowner purchases. If you already have a rug, but you’re not sure if it goes with the wall color or feel of the room, ask yourself two questions before deciding to either change the paint color or move the rug: 1. What do I like about the rug? Is it the color, texture or style? Or all three? If multi-colored, which color is your favorite? 2. Does the rug’s personality match the room’s personality? 68 | triangle style

Okay, that’s more than two questions, but if you answered “yes” to #2, then I would suggest you keep the rug and consider a different wall color. Examine your rug and decide what color in the rugs you really love or want to stand out in the rug. For example, I love red. I want this red bokhara rug to stand out, but I don’t want red walls. That would be a whole lotta red. I want to feel relaxed in my front room. It’s where I read or listen to music.

2/19/13

7:46 AM

Page 2

There’s some pale blue in the rug. It’s certainly not the predominant color, but one of the reasons why I love this rug is because I think the gray blue hues and deep red and cream work beautifully together. I choose a blue paint, not exact match, but in the same family as the blue in my rug. < Molding: Linen White, < Wall: Hemlock 719, Benjamin Moore Paints.

Great rugs for all occasions & great prices too!

The connection from rug to paint color will never steer you wrong. If you need a little direction, HGTV offers an online quiz to help you determine your “carpet” personality. www.hgtv.com/webhgtv/2010/may/invistaquiz/start.html There are eight multiple-choice questions, none of which actually asks you about carpets. That’s because HGTV recognizes our styles are a reflection of our personalities. Remember to consider the purpose of the room and how you want to feel in it. If you have a wild, bold rug, but you’d like to tone it down a little bit, go with a neutral paint color and vice versa. I always tell my customers to shop in their homes before shopping in the store. Maybe that gorgeous oriental needs to be in your bedroom instead of the dining room. Take another look around your home. Chances are you’ll find something that needs to go. Just because you put it there when you first purchased it doesn’t mean it’s stuck there for the next 30 years. And that includes rugs!

Saint Jacques French Cuisine has been voted one of the top 100 restaurants in the United States by Open Table Diners since 2009. When asking owner, Lil Lacassagne, what makes his restaurant so wonderful, all answers seem to revolve around passion. Passion for service, atmosphere, and most of all- food. Saint Jacques provides North Carolina with a genuine taste of authentic French cuisine. Every dish at Saint Jacques has a story behind it, an influence, and a stimulus. Some dishes like the Country Pate, are inspired by Lil's mother's kitchen in Grasse, France. Other dishes may be inspired by yearly visits to Michelin Star restaurants, such as Louis XV Alain Ducasse. Every year, Lil enhances his ardor and dedication by visiting his native land, France, several times of year. But how does he manage to keep his business open and take time to travel? Simply by organizing group tours with his fabulous guests from both Saint Jacques in Raleigh, as well as the Lacassagne's other property - The Burke Manor Inn, in Gibsonville. With one stone, he manages to open up another world to guests who may have never been given

such an opportunity to see and experience France as a native, especially a native gourmand! While showing France to his guests, Lil also gets the much needed opportunity to reinvigorate by revisiting the "sacredness and holiness of that food which is to be respected, portrayed and continued to be passed along." A great example of this is the dish "Coquilles Saint Jacques" which was developed in honor of Saint Jacques de Compostel. This dish is a wonderful gastronomical creation. Delicious wild scallops gently folded in a mushroom and rock shrimp Mornay cream sauce, lightly gratinéd to perfection. C'est magnifique! This summer will be no exception. Lil and his wife Lori plan on taking three tours to France this year! There will be one group going to the South of France, where they will have the opportunity to dine at such establishments as The Hotel Martinez (La Palme d’or, 2 Michelin Stars) and tour Galimard Perfumerie in Grasse. (Perfume Capital of the World). In addition to this fabulous journey to Provence, two groups of guests will get to join the Lacassagnes in Normandy where they will get to see the Bayeux Tapestry, gaze off the cliffs of Etretat, indulge in the freshest oyster tasting ever on the docks of Saint Vaast la Hougue, and learn how to prepare foie gras! For those passionate about food, wine and experiencing something truly authentic, these tours are not to be missed! There are still some spaces available. Don't pass up this once in a lifetime opportunity! Full itinerary can be viewed at www.saintjacquesfrenchcuisine.com or www.burkemanor.com.

Six Great Consignment Tips and Five Biggest Myths Answered TIPS Tip #1: When shopping for a specific item at a consignment store, be flexible and open minded. You may not find exactly what you want, but you might find something even better. 5655 Western Blvd | Suite C | Raleigh

Tip #2: Most items in a consignment store will

reduce every few weeks but if you wait for an item to reduce before you buy, it's likely to be sold before you get back. In other words "You snooze you lose"! Tip #3: Visit your favorite consignment store often. Unlike new furniture stores where they have many of the same items for sale, consignment stores have unique, one of a kind items and the inventory changes constantly. Tip #4: A consignment store can be a great source for information and referrals. Be wary of the consignment store that won't give you referrals to another consignment shop if you can't find what you are looking for in their shop. I find that most of the customers I refer to my fellow consignment shops come back to my store because they appreciate my willingness to meet their needs. Sure, I'd like to make the sale but if I don't have what my customer needs at the time, I am happy to help them in any way I can...and sew a little good will along the way. "Little things mean a lot" Tip #5: When considering venues for selling your furniture and home accessories, weigh all your options. Selling items yourself on the internet gets you all the money but it also gets you all the headache. You have to be home to show your items, invite strangers into your house, potential buyers don't always keep their appointments, annoying spammers and deal with people who are

professional hagglers. I've heard horrific and terrifying stories from people who have sold things through the internet. If you consign your items, the consignment store takes all the risk. All you have to do is clean it, get it to the consignment store of your choice and collect the check once your item sells. "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" Tip #6: Don't take it personally if your items aren't

accepted at a particular consignment store. Each store has it's own personality and what doesn't work for one shop may work for another. "Don't wear your heart on your sleeve"

MYTHS • Myth #1: "A consignment store is not a thrift store". TRUE - Most consignment shops have contracts

with each consignor and usually can't negotiate prices. Look at it as if they were your items on consignment and think how you would feel if the shop owner arbitrarily marked down items below ticketed price. Myth #2: "All consignment shops are dirty and smelly". FALSE - Most upscale consignment shops,

be it furniture or clothing, require the items being consigned to be clean and in next to new condition. The better your items look, the more likely they are to sell at a higher price. Myth #3: "I can sell this at a yard sale and make just as much money as I would make at a consignment shop". FALSE - People who shop yard sales are looking

for something they can buy for next to nothing. Even if you polish and shine your high end items before putting them in a yard sale, you will get a fraction of what you could have made if you would have consigned that very nice piece of furniture, and you won't have to deal with yard sale hagglers. Myth #4: "Consignment stores are overpriced yardsales". FALSE - People bring items into consignment

stores because they are too good to put in a yardsale and sell for next to nothing. If you have items to sell that you think will make money in a yard sale then they are probably not items that an upscale consignment store would even consider taking. Myth #5: "I can make more money by selling it myself on the internet". MAYBE - A consignment

store can usually sell things for more than it would sell on the internet and usually will net you, the consignor, a bigger profit. spring | 73

Almost every article I read about staying young says it’s important to keep on learning. Crossword puzzles, bridge,, foreign languages, anything new: these are the sorts of things on the recommended subjectlist. It’s not the subject matter, but the effort that counts—the same kind of effort it takes to prepare for any kind of sport. Persistent mental exercise, something that is challenging, makes a stronger, more flexible brain. It’s also important to stay positive. Everyone has stresses in their lives, some more than others to be sure, but it’s the way one handles stress, not the stress itself, that helps. Take a walk, read an absorbing book, go to a movie or even lounge in a warm bath. And vital to staying positive is to surround yourself with friends who bring out the best in you.

www.purpledoorspa.com

Having some sort of spiritual life is also important. I haven’t met a single person who has lived a long life who doesn’t believe in something. There’s something soothing about sitting in a quiet church.

It’s also no secret that exercise is key. Have you yet had a physical where you weren’t asked about the amount of exercise you do? Some of us say every day when what we really mean is that we did it every day a couple of weeks ago. The best way to make exercise part of your day is to choose a time easiest for you and simply don’t schedule anything else. Make it a sacred part of your day and let others know you won’t be available during that time. Some people do best in groups, where there is a social aspect that goes along with the exercise; others do best alone. One woman I know simply walks through the rooms of her house for an hour, listening to a book on tape while she goes. Of course having a healthy diet always helps. More than one person I know went to a nutritionist who did all sorts of tests. and after the results came back tailor made a food plan best suited to her strengths and weaknesses.

It’s true that healthy food makes healthy people. But you have to stick with it. I did beautifully on a balanced plant based diet. In fact I aced my yearly physical. I congratulated myself and then felt safe to drift away from my healthy food plan. And guess what was the outcome of my next physical? Having a sense of humor is also recommended. Some people find it’s a breeze, something that just comes to them, like a gift from heaven. Others have to work a little hard at it. I am one of those. I’ll never be the queen of the comedy circle, nor would I want to be, but there was a time when I looked askance at the life of the party and wondered why I couldn’t relax just a bit more. So I practiced laughing in front of a mirror, even though I didn’t mean it, which in turn seemed rather funny and made me laugh. Sleep, sleep, sleep, right through the night, is something else that’s recommended. I wish I could. Right now it’s 12:34 and in a few minutes I will go to sleep for only four hours, wake, have a half glass of Guinness and then go back to sleep for another four hours. That’s four hours more than I used to have. I’d like to make it red wine, it’s virtues are listed, but it gives me a headache and four extra hours count for something. Besides, a woman I once met, who was 104 at a time, had had a highball instead of a glass of wine her whole life through. Of course there are people who just shouldn’t drink at all. I think I’ve covered my bases. To have a long, healthy life: keep your mind active, your attitude sunny and your stress eliminated or at least under control. Choose positive people, enjoy a spiritual life, and take time to be still. And it’s important to create a healthy food plan, a glass of red wine included, stick to your exercise routine, encourage your sense of humor and by all means get a good night’s sleep if you can. Even so, you’ll enjoy your live all the better when you’re involved with your community and are kind to others.

Tackling Alzheimer’s Rivalries are nothing new to the Triangle, and in June, one of the oldest rivalries will be decided on the football field – blonde vs. brunette. Blondes vs. Brunettes is a volunteer-driven, active event for women that brings the passion and spirit of young community leaders together to support the Alzheimer’s Association. The event was established in Washington, DC in 2005 and last year, we followed in the footsteps of many other cities and started Blondes vs. Brunettes Raleigh. Raising over $32,000 in our inaugural season, we were eager to start our second year to raise both funds and awareness for the 5.4 million individuals in the United States suffering from Alzheimer’s.

With the season beginning in March, each team must work together to raise money. Throughout the season, we will host several events to continue to fund our mission in hopes of raising our goal of $40,000 this year. In June, two teams of women will engage in some friendly competition in a flag football game to compete for bragging rights! Our passion and hard work will be displayed at practice and on the field, but our success will rely upon the support of our friends Email: bvbraleigh@gmail.com and community and those willing to Facebook: donate to this important cause. www.facebook.com/bvbraleigh Together, we can tackle Alzheimer’s!

EVERYDAY ELEGANCE Great food for entertaining that's simple enough for everyday Recipes by Nancy Aiken • everydayelegancefood@gmail.com

CHICKEN SAUTÉ WITH DIJON MUSTARD AND CREAM Dijon mustard in this dish creates a surprisingly delicate flavor. The addition of cream helps to mellow the sharpness of the mustard and results in a sophisticated blend of flavors. This is a great recipe that truly is easy enough for a weeknight meal while still being elegant enough for entertaining. • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken thighs, lightly seasoned with salt and pepper • 3 tablespoons olive oil • ½ cup white wine • ½ onion, chopped • 8 oz. mushrooms, sliced • ¼ tsp. dried thyme • ¼ cup heavy cream • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard In a large skillet over medium heat, add 2 tablespoons of the olive oil. Once the pan is hot, add the chicken thighs and allow to brown on both side, working in batches to avoid over crowding the pan. Remove thighs to a plate and keep warm. In the same pan, add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil along with the chopped onions and sauté until tender, about 5-6 minutes. Add the mushrooms and sauté until just wilted, about 2-3 minutes. Next, deglaze the pan with the wine using a wooden spoon to scrape up the browned bits. Add chicken thighs back to the pan along with chicken stock and dried thyme. Allow to simmer uncovered until the chicken thighs are cooked through, about 5-6 minutes depending on the thickness of the meat.

Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine the cream and mustard. Turn the heat to low and add the cream and mustard mixture to the pan, stirring to combine. Add a few grinds of fresh pepper and serve with rice. Serves 2-3.

ask anna Hi Anna, I was given a facial certificate and want to redeem it but I am at a loss as to what kind of facial to get. Can you suggest a good facial for a first timer. A little bit about me...I have dry skin and sometimes it gets blotchy. — Tracy Hi Tracy, Facials come in all different forms; some are more focused on correction and others more on pampering. Determining which type of facial you should get for the first time requires the aesthetican (skin care provider) knowing your expectations and desired outcome. You stated you have dry, blotchy skin which can mean several things, for example you are not properly exfoliated (dead skin cell build up) which a peel would help with however skin types that tend to get blothy can also be sensitive so we may want to do a light microdermabrasion the first time rather than a peel. Some facial treatments may have some post procedure “down time” associated with it such as light peeling or flaking which is a good thing as this means cellular turnover is happening. But then again if you’re simply looking for an instant soft hydrated glow something like an

oxygen infused facial is nice mild and soothing option. I would highly recommend selecting a skin care facility that offers a complimentary pre-facial consultation so your aesthetican can take a look at your skin, ask you about your skin/health history and get a better understand of exactly what your needs/concerns are. I would never just lie down on a treatment table and let a stranger give me a facial without interviewing them first. You need to make sure they are educated and that they are able to better educate you about your skin and together you will both be able to create a treatment plan that will have your skin looking great in no time. 56 Up is the latest edition of the acclaimed British 7 Up series. The series began in 1964 with the Jesuit philosophy “Give me a child until he is seven and I will give you the man.” With this premise in mind, fourteen sevenyear old children from different socio-economic classes of English society were chosen and captured on film and the director, Michael Apted, has followed them every seven years hence. When they are seven, you wonder how they will turn out and you ask yourself the same question when they are fourteen, twentyone, and so forth. And here they are now: fifty-six and you still wonder what life has in store for them. At seven, Tony is into everything and always will be. Neil, on the other hand, is a cheerful and tender little boy with lots of promise. As the years go by, you just want to hold him and tell him everything will be okay. Suzy zip zags through life, is brutally honest, and you like her a lot. Bruce, John, and Neil -upper-class seven-year olds talk about the futures they have planned. You find their later lives more interesting to follow than you would have thought. Sue just makes you proud. And in between each edition, you cross your fingers. You can’t wait to see what they’ve been up to since you last met. With some, you would like to sit down and have a good chat. And with others, although you may feel a bit awkward, you’re interested all the same. They all feel like such good friends.

Little Dorrit, adapted from a novel by Charles Dickens’, is a Masterpiece Classic -so well done that it won seven Emmy Awards. It’s a panorama of English life within a debtor’s prison, where sometimes families live their entire lives. And sometimes 80 | triangle style

they have children like Little Dorrit, who leaves through the locked gate each day to find a living as best she can to pay off her father’s insurmountable debt. Her employer, it is suspected, keeps a secret which can change Little Dorrit’s life.

Bride Flight In 1953 a KLM flight, part of the “Last Great Air Race” from London to New Zealand, was given the nickname “Bride Flight,” because the majority of its passengers were women on their way to join husbands or fiances. The film takes its inspiration from this event. In the film are three women who leave their drab post-war Holland behind with the hope of finding a better life in New Zealand. One woman, a Holocaust survivor, wants to open her own boutique. The other two are married, one to a man she has met just once. And on the plane is a man who will weave in and out of their lives for decades to come. Although I enjoyed the story, it was the landscape that remained most vivid.

The Well-Digger’s Daughter is an oldfashioned movie. Set in the idyllic French countryside around 1914, it is the tale of a well-digger named Pascal Amoretti. He’s a hard-working man who has six daughters to support. After their mother dies, he summons home his eldest daughter from Paris to help raise them. Patricia is a pretty girl and Amoretti thinks his rough-hewn assistant would make her a good husband. Patricia however has fallen in love with the son of a wealthy neighbor who has gone off to war. When Amoretti learns she is pregnant, he takes Patricia to the boy’s parents who refuse to right their son’s wrong. Amoretti refuses to bear the shame and sends Patricia away. Though, wouldn’t a boy be named Amoretti?
