why I love it... Sunflowers on a blue background and knee high socks may not be the cup of tea for everyone, but you can’t know for sure un l you try it out right?

why I love it... Add a splash of color to a leather skirt with a floral cardigan, e it all together with a colorful necklace.

why I love it... The denim pinafore dress may not be a typical overall a re, but the vintage feel of it is a perfect complementary piece for the white tee. For that absolute finish, slap on a choker, backpack and chunky boots. summer | 21

GET TO KNOW THE CHARMING AND ARTISTIC DESIGNERS BEHIND THIS VERY UNIQUE FASHION BRAND.

ANARKH Brooklyn-based designers Ana and Cee aren’t afraid to push boundaries when designing for the bold, strong women who wear their clothes. The edgy style of their line ANARKH has caught on with fashion lovers across the Triangle who appreciate their originality and attention to detail. While showcasing their latest collection at CT Weekends in Cameron Village, Ana and Cee discussed their inspiration and explained the interesting way their creative styles come together to create ANARKH.

Interviewed By Deanna Lopes • Photos by J1’s Photography 22 | triangle style

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE ANARKH? Ana: ANARKH means fate in Ancient Greek according to Notre Dame de Paris by Victor Hugo. It’s also an abbreviation of my first, middle and last names. Cee: ANARKH is European style meets American sensibility. Its taking what we like best about styles around the world and melding them together into beautiful pieces that are comfortable and wearable. A: The feel and look of ANARKH are based upon two very important women in my life. One of them is a lady going to Paris to be fitted for a Balenciaga gown while Cristobal was still alive. Her style, even at that time, was pushing the limits, even if it was a gown. She had that spunk and attitude. The other woman is my mother, who was a big fan of Vivienne Westwood, the 80’s and loved to break rules. The mix of those two influence what we do right now.

It’s comfort first and foremost, then everything else just has to look fabulous. We don’t want women to wear our garments once and never again, so we try to play with our designs and make is so that once piece can be worn many different ways. Change your shoes and lipstick and you can go from work during the day to a party in the evening. We love our sweatpants but that’s not what we want to be in all the time, so we try to create the feel of it. It’s comfort first and foremost, then everything else just has to look fabulous. HOW DID YOU MEET AND START ANARKH? A: We met in 2004 while we were briefly working for a French designer in New York

and we became friends. We both loved fashion, but it had nothing to do with our friendship. Cee started wearing the clothes that I was making for two seasons and she looked fantastic in them. She had the attitude, the look and everything that goes with it. Cee is also an artist in her own way, as an accessories designer. We began working together when I needed some bags and she created this amazing design for my collection. We started ANARKH in 2007. A department store in New York carried our Spring/Summer line and it just took off and became very successful.

Bold, Creative, Attitude.

HOW DO YOUR DESIGN AESTHETICS WORK TOGETHER? C: We influence each other in exciting ways because our ideas come from very different starting points and then they start coming together, and mixing and playing around. We feed off of each other’s aesthetics and we definitely have very different approaches to design, but we feel that they go together really well. We are still surprising each other after ten years! A: I’m in a fantasy and she’s in reality. Her reality and connection with nature links with the fantasy world inside my head and that becomes ANARKH. It’s like a surrealist painting that you look at and have to interpret for your self. You look at a garment and it’s up to you how you’re going to wear it and how you’re going to approach it. We love seeing the different ways ladies put together an outfit using our pieces and interpreting them their own ways with whatever they have.

CAMERON VILLAGE 437 Daniels St., Raleigh NC 27605

(919) 787-9073

24 | triangle style

WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR INSPIRATION? A: In a moment, I can see something and know exactly what the collection is going to be. The inspiration behind anything we do always starts with art, in any form. Usually just one element will come through. Maybe it becomes a print that we do, or a shape, or silhouette. A lot of times it’s what I’m

watching. I was obsessed with Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones when I was working on the Spring/Summer 2014 collection. C: I love geometry and nature. I’m sort of obsessed with macro photography and I always want to get as close as possible. I love seeing things from a centimeter away because it totally changes what you’re looking at and it throws off your sense of familiarity. I like looking at everyday scenes or objects and trying to see them in a different way.

Bold, strong women who aren’t afraid. They know their style and they know what they like.

Ageless Sophistication

WHAT TYPE OF WOMAN DO YOU DESIGN FOR? A: One with an attitude. We do not dress for a certain age, body type or style. We dress an attitude, one that’s daring and fun. C: Bold, strong women who aren’t afraid. They know their style and they know what they like. A: It doesn’t mean that they’re harsh and that they’re in control of everything, but its just women who have inner strength. They dress for each other, and those are the women we like. HOW IS ANARKH DIFFERENT FROM OTHER DESIGNER BRANDS? A: Well first of all, other brands don’t have us. Second of all, it’s all made in New York, and that’s one thing we’re proud of. It is a big deal for our clients too, that we are trying to bring business back to New York and the US.

Ana modeling a ruffle-skirt dress with leather accents. The luxury of ANARKH is in the details! Our goal is to dress a real woman, not a model on the runway or in a picture, even though we have to do that sometimes. We have to create garments that will look fabulous on beautiful young models as well as real people who are all different shapes, sizes and ages. C: Our garments must flatter and accentuate the beauty of any woman who wears them. That’s the goal. A: It’s like retouching for a photographer. The body needs to be perfected by clothes. Even Dramatic Chipmunk would be impressed with some of the amazing viral videos that have come out of the Tarheel State! With so many North Carolinians putting out hilarious videos this year that ended up being a hit with millions of viewers around the world, we wanted to find out what did they did with all their newfound Internet fame? X-MAS JAMMIES

Local news anchor Penn Holderness sang a parody of Will Smith’s “Miami” with his wife and two young children. The idea was to create a video Christmas card to show off what the family had been up to you in the previous year and to introduce the family’s new endeavor: A public relations company called The Greenroom that creates viral videos for companies and politicians. The video was uploaded in December, and it has received almost 14 million hits. “Our company got literally 17,000 e-mails over the course of a week, so it was a great start for my gig at Greenroom,” Holderness says. Now the couple is working on their new company, and things are going well. They have already released “X-mas Jammies 2” and a few other videos. “Every now and then, we’ll be walking down the street and a car will drive by and scream, ‘X-mas Jammies!’ out their window,” Holderness shares. “All in all, I feel like our whole family is in this place where people want us to do creative things for them. That’s a great life to live, and I hope we get to keep living it.”

A FAT GIRL DANCING TALK DIRTY TO ME

Whitney Way Thore was part of the morning crew of Jared and Katie in the Morning on 107.5 KZL, and Jared suggested that she post some videos of her dancing with the title “A Fat Girl Dancing.” She agreed, and the result was a viral sensation with almost 3 million views since it was posted in January. Way Thore says that she got messages from people all over the world after the video became popular. “People are telling me that I’m inspiring them to live the way they want to and pursue their passions without being afraid of what people think of them,” she says. “This is exactly the aim of the No Body Shame Campaign: To live freely and fully and love yourself without shame.” Way Thore has since made appearances on The Today Show, Good Morning America, The Steve Harvey Show, CNN Headline News, Huffington Post Live and Inside Edition. “The response has been overwhelmingly positive, but of course, there are those who think that I am promoting obesity and still assert I can dance if I want to but that I should do it privately where my body won’t offend anyone,” Way Thore shares. “This, of course, is BS. I didn’t live through 29 years of debilitating shame that led to me struggling with bulimia from the ages of 12 to 18 (when I was 120 pounds), a diagnosis of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and a weight gain of 200 pounds and countless other trials to live my joy secretly. I’ll scream it out loud, thank you!”

SNOW DAY RAP When snow closed schools in Durham, two administrators put together a creative video set to the tune of Vanilla Ice’s “Ice, Ice Baby” to let students know. The video now has almost 5 million views. Michael Ulku-Steiner says that after all the trials and tribulations with the weather, “I figured they might appreciate some levity.” After the video aired on the local news, Ulku-Steiner says he thought that would be it, but within days, they had received links from websites around the world, as well as requests for interviews. “Clearly, the video tapped into a universal desire – a sentiment that transcends race, nationality, or creed – a universal desire to make fun of school administrators,” he explains.

www.whaleboneurbansurf.com

Ulku-Steiner shares that things haven’t changed much, but that “We remain the same fun-loving, unapologetically geeky, embarrassing-to-ourchildren, middle-aged, veterans of the Yo! MTV Raps era.” He adds, “We'll keep looking for ways to bring

some whimsical fun to our jobs and connect our students to the musical canon of late 20th century.” It’s hard to imagine what North Carolinians can do to top these viral videos, but we’re excited to see what comes next for these and other creative Tarheel residents.

When your hairstylist looks at you, she sees more than just your pretty face. She sees geometry, angles, lines and so much more! Within minutes of sitting in her chair, your stylist quickly assesses your face shape, facial features, body frame, height, hair texture, lifestyle, and even your quirky cowlick, in order to create a personal style that works for YOU! TSM spoke with veteran hair designer, Lisa Rivoli, of Joule Salon in Cary about what goes into consideration when constructing the perfect coiffure.

HOW TO GET THE PERFECT CUT

SHEAR

PERFECTION Written By Audrey D. Mark 32 | triangle style

Rivoli stresses that, when it comes to your tresses, often the stylist really does know best! During your pre-cut consultation Rivoli says communication is the the key. “It’s good to tell your hairdresser about what you definitely like and don’t like about your hair," she says, "but it’s also a great time to listen and learn from their expertise and experience.” Like many stylists, Rivoli has spent years training and learning about the architecture and construction of a precision haircut. She’s picked up a trick or two, or a thousand, about what it takes to make a design work. She also loves to teach her clients about how they can style and wear their hair in ways that they may never have even thought possible. When it comes to working with your crowning glory, the right hairstylist can be worth her weight in gold! Rivoli really encourages her clients to bring in pictures of looks they love. She explains that photos, “help put us on the same page. Plus,” she says, ”my inch trim might be different than your inch.” Pictures are especially important if you are going for a dramatic change. It’s also important to let your stylist know your personal preferences such as where you like to part your hair, as well as just how much time and money you are willing to commit to maintaining you new look. For Rivoli, the most important thing is that she is able to create a style that will give her clients confidence and make them “look and feel positively beautiful.” You don’t have to go under the knife to look your best! A great hairstyle is like plastic surgery, but with scissors. The right cut should highlight your favorite features and hide your flaws. Rivoli likes to look at the process “big picture” by first wet cutting the hair. Next, she steps back to see how the hair falls and then goes back in to dry cut and “carve the haircut perfectly to work with the shape of the face.” Like an true artist,

she is able to cut in fine lines and angles to flatter and camouflage. "This is when," Rivoli says, “the magic happens.” A talented stylist can use your hair to “call attention to the features you want to bring out or redirect the eye to soften the things you’d like to downplay.” Who knows, you may not even need Botox with the right side-swept bangs!

FAUX PYTHON, BRIGHTLY COLORED, REAL LEATHER TOTES, CLUTCHES AND WALLETS. TOKYO BAY WATCHES & FICARRE HAIR CLIPS.

For Rivoli, “Face shape is definitely important when designing a hair cut, but it’s not the only thing.” She says, “Every face shape can wear any style and any length,” as long as it is cut the right way. For example, while Rivoli would not recommend a spiky pixie do for her clients with longer narrow faces, she can definitely create a cute short style for them with volume in the right areas for balance. The classic bob is also a style that can work for anyone, but length, angle and graduation all have to be in balance with everything else. Most of us think we know the shape of our face like we know the back of our hand! Surprisingly, however, many of us get it wrong.

Even though face shape isn’t everything when thinking about a hair style, it’s a good place to start. Rivoli suggests to accurately find out your face shape, stand in front of a mirror with your hair pulled back and tucked behind your ears. Then use your hands to follow the outline shape of your face. While she doesn’t want her clients to feel limited, Rivoli does have a few suggestions to consider for each facial shape;

Oval: Think Jessica Alba Easiest shape to work with, as most styles flatter this shape. Styles that look great have a bit of volume on the top and are narrower by the jaw.

Square: Think Selma Hayek Soften the angles by creating waves. Try a side part or bangs with some texture.

Round: Think Kate Bosworth This shape works easily with both long and short hair , but be sure to find a style that elongates the face. Graduated bobs are a great go-to style. Rounds should avoid straight across bangs.

Heart: Think Reese Witherspoon Longer hair with side-swept bangs look lovely on a heart-shaped face.

Long: Think Sarah Jessica Parker Long and wavy with lots of volume helps to make a narrow face look wider and more balanced. Long fringe looks fabulous. Once you’ve got the perfect cut, you need to find the right tools to help you put your best face forward. Put away your flat iron; this summer it’s all about making waves. One new styling product Rivoli loves from L’Oreal is Perfect Texture. She uses it every day to define waves and to add texture, control volume and tame frizz. With Perfect Texture, she is able to create the perfect “beachy summer wave” her clients clamor for all season long! TS

HAIR LOSS WOMEN EXPERIENCE HAIR LOSS FOR VARYING REASONS, AND IN MANY DIFFERENT CAPACITIES, BUT THE END RESULT IS TYPICALLY THE SAME FOR THOSE AFFECTED.

When you lose your hair, for whatever reason, it can be devastating. Many people feel their hair is what makes them beautiful, and they can be left feeling self-conscious, anxious, or even depressed. Modern Enhancement Salon Day Spa offers several options to help restore confidence to those affected, no matter what their personal level of hair loss may be.

36 | triangle style

Early signs of hair loss such as an increase in shedding or a decrease in hair density and volume might be corrected by simply using products like Moroccanoil Root Boost or Kerastase Powder Bluff to provide volume to the hair at the root. For more intensive thinning, Toppik Hair Building Fibers use actual keratin, the same protein found in hair. The loose powder-like product uses a static charge to bind to even the finest strands of hair, and help mask any thinning or patches of hair loss. You may also consider starting a series of supplements that promote hair growth and density, such as Kerastase Densi-Recharge along with Kerastase Densitive GL root spray.

When the decrease in density begins to show through the length of the hair, it may be time to consider hair extensions to add volume and/or length. Tonya Norwood, Modern Enhancement’s extension specialist, is certified in 23 methods of hair extensions and hair replacement. Bonded extensions (their most well known brands being Hairdreams and Great Lengths) are tipped with a safe keratin bond similar to the molecular structure of your own hair and applied by controlled heat to small sections of the natural hair. These extensions are generally the most discrete, and offer gorgeous thick hair every day for up to six months. Another preferred method, seamless extensions, adds thickness to most lengths of hair – including shorter styles. Also referred to as “tape in” extensions, seamless hair is polyurethane strips that lay flat and are applied using double-sided hair tape. Ultress by Gemtress and Hotheads are two of their most popular brands; the high quality hair is reusable, with the client simply needing to have the extensions removed and reapplied closer to the scalp every 4-6 weeks.

For women experiencing severe thinning, the effects show predominately at the scalp. An integration unit, such as MicroLine by Hairdreams or Evolve, can provide help masking thinning or balding. MicroLine works by attaching a micro fine virtually invisible “hair net to your own hair. The result is a natural, full looking style with minimum maintenance. Visiting the salon every 4-6 weeks to have the unit tightened will ensure a secure hold and comfortable fit. The Evolve unit is designed for clients experiencing up to 50 percent hair loss. The unit is made of a stretchable, breathable silicone and does not require any adhesives, making it comfortable enough to wear day and night for 4-6 weeks. Integration units are not wigs, and therefore acceptable for women with active lifestyles including sports and swimming!

Those affected by a greater hair loss, or even complete baldness, may feel as though their options for a natural looking style are severely limited. Modern Enhancement disagrees as they can provide clients with a natural looking hairline and a full head of lush locks using lace front wigs. Both Raquel Welch and Envy offer an undetectable solution that looks as if the hair is actually growing out of the scalp. Made from 100 percent human hair, these pieces can be customized to suit your personal style, including coloring and thermal styling! Hair loss is not a battle you have to fight alone. Modern Enhancement Salon Day Spa can offer solutions, regardless of the degree of loss you may be experiencing. Their professionals will consult with you on your challenges and concerns in a relaxing atmosphere and guide you to your own personal enhanced look. CALL TODAY FOR YOUR FREE CONSULTATION. TS

ADORE yourself... for LESS

EVER WONDER?

CLIENT TALK WE ASKED TRIANGLE RESIDENT, LINDSAY CREASY WHAT SHE HAD DONE, AS WELL AS WHAT SHE THOUGHT OF THE SERVICE... What procedure did you select? I had a VI Peel done. My skin was dull and looked tired; I needed some life back in my face. I also noticed some fine lines and mild adult acne that I wanted to get rid of. What was it about this particular procedure that was attractive to you? I asked Angie, my aesthetician, about facial procedures that would give my skin an overhaul. She recommended the VI Peel, saying it would revitalize my face. That’s all it took!

Did the procedure live up to your expectations? The VI Peel was amazing. It didn’t hurt at all; it was like toner on my face. About three days after the procedure, my face started to peel, but Angie told me ahead of time to look for this. It was like I had a mild sunburn, but after that my face was flawless. I was given a very rich moisturizer to apply to help with the peeling. By the seventh day, my skin looked unbelievable, and the payoff was well worth the temporary discomfort. My skin is now fresh, radiant, smooth, and even-toned. I even received several compliments on my new glow! Would you do it again? Absolutely! I am totally recommending the VI Peel and Southern Dermatology to all (even complete strangers who compliment my skin). I was impressed with how well trained the staff were, and with how knowledgeable they are of their products. They were friendly and on time. I am looking forward to future procedures at their Raleigh facility. For someone considering this procedure for the first time, can you share any words of wisdom? I would suggest that if you’re doing the VI Peel and you’re worried about explaining the peeling process, schedule it around a time where you are not out or working during days three and four. Other than that, it's amazing – the results are so worth the no pain and the day or two of peeling skin.

Enjoy a summer stroll through shops and restaurants to the participating merchants between the hours of 6:00pm to 8:00pm. The wine is free – and your $10 participation proceeds go directly to charity. Additional donations are welcome. “Just purchase a wrist band at the Tent on the Green near Taqueria Americana,” said Co-Marketing Director, Meghan Fountain. “You will then be given a map that has numbers next to participating merchants, as well as a listing of which wine they will be serving.” And if you find one you really like, some locations will have bottles for purchase. Of course, you must be at least 21 years old to partake in the tastings, but all ages are welcome to shop and savor the ambiance of restaurant choices. The first 100 participants will also receive a commemorative wine glass, so get there early! These events take place rain or shine. So many people enjoy “Do It Yourself projects. And there has never been a time when so much information was so easily obtained when it comes to decorating your home. From magazines, to internet sites such as HOUZZ, to YouTube, it seems as though almost any size project can be researched, implemented, and then enjoyed.

WHEN TO CALL A

DECORATOR

62 | triangle style

Written By Paula Fullerton, Sew Fine II

But that happens in a perfect world! In reality, what you are seeing in your research is the end result of planning, preparation, obtaining materials, fabrication, and even multiple attempts to achieve the desired results. So, when should YOU call a decorator?

allow too much afternoon sunlight and glare. Instead of guessing what will work best to solve your design project or choosing a “solution” that looked nice in a magazine, work with a designer to see if the solution you are considering will really accomplish your goal.

The first time is when you are considering a new home/condo/apartment. Before you commit to a large expenditure, get advice from a local design professional. For a small fee, the decorator will visit the property with you, help you decide if your furnishings will fit in the new space, and if the new space will accommodate your needs. This advice can help you with your decision to purchase or lease your new living spaces. And I have found it is even more crucial if your new living space will be smaller than your current living space. “Down-sizing” presents unique design challenges.

Selecting paint for your interior rooms or the exterior of your home is a daunting challenge. That 2” square paint chip looked lovely at the paint store, but can you predict how it will look when covering large surfaces? A decorator is trained to look at a color to see the “undertones”. A green can look too “lime” or too “blue” depending on the undertones in the color. Some colors intensify when covering larger surfaces, making them less than pleasing in an entire room. Finally, some colors evoke physiological effects that cannot be switched on or off. Before you spend days trying to decide on a paint color, a weekend or longer painting the area, and then have disappointing results...call a decorator when you are starting the paint selection process!

Another time to call a designer is when you your rooms or home have a unique challenge. For example, your Family Room windows may

Decorators are also knowledgeable about furniture. Today, we all like to keep a well-made piece of upholstered furniture rather than toss it and buy new. It can be almost as expensive to recover a quality frame as it is to purchase a new piece of furniture. And not all fabrics are suitable for use as upholstery. Call your local decorator when considering a reupholstery project. They will assess the piece, let you know if it is cost effective to reupholster, and make suggestions for the new fabric or leather covering. And they can suggest simple upholstery design changes to make the finished product “up to date and unique. Finally, your trusted decorator is a treasure trove of resources you may need for your home project. Decorators have subcontractors that they have vetted for professionalism, quality of work, and value. Don’t guess when hiring an electrician, plumber, or contractor. Ask your decorator who they recommend! Your decorator will be your trusted source of knowledge, advice, and assistance when making your living spaces beautiful. Don’t hesitate to contact her for your decorating needs!

PLANNING TO REUPHOLSTER?

TIPS FOR DETERMINING WHETHER YOUR PIECE OF FURNITURE IS WORTH THE RE-DO In decorating a room, you’re weighing whether to reupholster a loved piece of furniture you already own (or have found at a steal), versus purchasing something new. If you're eco-conscious and prefer to save something from a landfill, how can you tell if your piece is of good quality? The rule of thumb is: older is better. Maybe furniture that’s at least 15-20 years old is made better than pieces today. If it was going to fall apart, it would have by now. So you can give something worn a facelift, making it usable again and even adding value.

CONSIDER THESE ISSUES • Would it be feasible to just give the piece a good cleaning or make minor repairs? • How much would it cost to replace the item? • Is your piece out of the ordinary or a classic example of craftsmanship (look for important marks or labels that may indicate value)? Check whether the piece wobbles, rocks or feels unsteady. • Are the coil seat springs 8-way and hand-tied? • Do you love the size and scale of the piece in relation to your room?

For a sofa to be worth reupholstering, the frame should be made of hardwood with relatively few knots, and the joints secured with dowels and glue rather than staples. If the piece is heavy for its size, 66 | triangle style

it's likely to be of high quality. Smart sofas also have coiled springs tied with twine in an asterisk pattern. If it has rubber panels or springs in an "s" shape rather than coiled, the piece probably isn't worth reupholstering. If the furniture is sturdy and in good condition with a well-made frame, and you can find both reasonably priced fabric and an upholsterer, then you have the components necessary to successfully refurbish. When the style and lines of your current furniture become so familiar that you just can’t stand to part with them, new upholstery can make it possible to continue using it for many more years. If you love the “bones” of a piece, reupholstering is the way to go. It’s recommended that you keep elements of your piece that work. Smaller scale patterns are right on any size furniture, but a large pattern looks crowded on a small chair. Pillows are an easy way to customize furniture in any space while keeping with trends. And if cushions are saggy or uncomfortable, be sure to replace the foam to add both comfort and clean lines. Reupholstering old foam in questionable condition isn’t a wise use of your design dollars. Written By Kristy Stevenson Photos Provided By Midas Fabric

COST OF REUPHOLSTERING

HOW MUCH FABRIC WILL I NEED

The cost of labor will vary from shop to shop as there is no industry standard. A reputable upholsterer should be able to provide a final price after seeing the furniture in person. But remember that an estimate is not the same thing as a quote. Comparison shop – choose a workman with good reviews, a large portfolio, and rates you can afford. Angieslist.com is a great resource.

Fabric drives the cost, with a typical sofa using about 18-20 yards of fabric and a typical chair requiring about seven to nine. The amount of fabric depends upon the size and style of the furniture, whether the fabric chosen is a solid or a pattern (you’ll need more with a pattern), the number of cushions and pillows needed and any extras, such as adding a skirt.

Questions to ask include:

Be sure to select a fabric that will hold up to the wear you expect your piece to see. If it will be used regularly, you may need a more durable fabric than on an antique chair that is rarely handled.

• How long has the company been in

business? • Can we see examples of your work? • How much are pickup and delivery charges? • What is the turnaround time? • Do you remove existing fabric?

Reupholstering is not necessarily less expensive than buying something new. It’s not just about the fabric, but a time- and labor-intensive process that involves specialized skills. Consider it major surgery as the furniture is stripped down to the frame, then rebuilt. But depending upon your taste, new furniture can be pricey. So if your existing pieces only have surface wear, you can save money by reupholstering when replacing isn’t structurally necessary.

Some upholsterers will let you email a picture of your piece and they in turn send estimates for fabric yardage and labor. Others prefer to see the piece in person. Possible upcharges may include working on sofas with zippers; attaching or replacing welt cords; making sure that shapes and patterns align; repairing or rebuilding a frame, springs, or legs; or adding tufting or nailheads to give your furniture a more tailored look.

STYLE SPOTLIGHT

ALAN HORWITZ

RELIABLE LOAN AND JEWELRY WHAT SEPARATES RELIABLE LOAN AND JEWELRY FROM OTHER JEWELRY STORES? We have two sides to our business. First, we provide collateral loans for people who need quick money on merchandise such as jewelry, electronics, and musical equipment. The majority of our business, however, comes from the second side: jewelry sales. We offer beautiful estate pieces as well as new jewelry and a large bridal selection. Our customers can expect great service and a family-type atmosphere when they come in to Reliable. That’s why we serve several generations of clients.

RELIABLE HAS A WONDERFUL FAMILY HISTORY. HOW DID IT ALL BEGIN? My great Uncle Philip Horwitz moved to Raleigh from Baltimore in 1922 to start Raleigh Loan. Then Abe Horwitz (my grandfather and Philip’s father) joined the Raleigh business in 1928. My father, Philip Horwitz, is responsible for the launch and growth of the jewelry side of our business. He established a reputation in the Triangle area for being the best place to come for diamonds, turning our pawn shop into a destination for high end jewelry at discounted prices. Word of mouth referrals earned him a reputation for being the go-to person for buying diamonds and other jewelry. 68 | triangle style

When I moved home in 1999, I began to develop my own clientele. At the time, former high school and college classmates were coming to me for their engagement rings. It was a great feeling to be able to help them and bring in new business at the same time.

WHAT’S THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION YOU ENCOUNTER WITH NEW CUSTOMERS? Most are amazed at our selection. We always encourage people not to judge us from the outside, but come inside and see for themselves.

DOWNTOWN RALEIGH HAS BECOME A HOT SPOT. HOW HAS IT AFFECTED BUSINESS? Downtown continues to grow with us and around us. We have picked up a great deal of new business from Red Hat Amphitheater traffic and multiple law firms that have moved downtown. There is a lot more foot traffic than ever before which always is good for us. The future of downtown Raleigh looks very bright. We hope to remain on Wilmington Street for many years to come. I have a son of my own now, and hopefully one day he can keep the Reliable tradition alive.

WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY LIKE IN THE STORE? Down here, there is no typical day. We are a multi-faceted store which keeps things interesting. The only consistent things we must do is put jewelry in the display cases each morning and take it out each night. Like all retail businesses, sales fluctuate – but bridal remain pretty consistent. Online advertising via our website, Facebook, and occasionally eBay have been great avenues for us. Visit reliablejewelry.com to view some of our selection.

WHAT ARE YOUR THREE FAVORITE PIECES IN STORE RIGHT NOW? The first is a diamond pendant with three diamond interlocking ovals. In 14 karat (measure of purity) white gold with .75 carats (measure of weight) of diamonds. At $1795, it’s a very elegant piece and even prettier on.

My second favorite is a Halo style engagement ring featuring a 1.5 carat with two tapered baguettes in platinum. This is not a typical Halo ring, and that’s why I like it. It sets itself apart with the baguettes. $14,500. The third is a pair of diamond stud earrings surrounded by diamond jackets. Studs look great by themselves, but look even better with jackets. We have all sizes of both. These pictured are 3.06 carat studs at $13,500. The diamond jackets have 1.00 carats total and are $1650.

SUMMER READS FOR THE MOMS

FOR THE KIDS

Heaven is For Real

Take it from Taylor, the fifth grade phenom who loves to read and has the reviews you can use to check out the best books for summer! From surprise endings to surviving hard times, Taylor's got the 411 on what's worth reading:

Ahhh, an hour to yourself - sitting by the beach, sipping fruity drinks and catching up on the latest must-read! Well, if you're a mom, you MIGHT be able to slip in a few minutes here and there, so you want to make sure the book you read is well worth the time. Here are my top three picks from one busy mom to another:

by Todd and Colton Burpo The amazing true story of one little boy's experience in Heaven after dying and being brought back to life. Prepare to laugh, cry and believe! This jaw-dropping account of a boy's time in Heaven will give you goosebumps and hope. From his description of the grandfather he never met to detailed Biblically accuracies - a top of the list read (plus, the movie is now out, which makes a great follow-up!)

Dad is Fat by Jim Gaffigan Get ready for a dose of reality that will have you rolling. From uber-comedian Jim Gaffigan comes his true stories and tales of life with a house full of kids. You simply cannot make this stuff up and hearing these hilarious accounts will make you feel like a better parent - well worth the time to stay up late!

Mockingjay by by Suzanne Collins The third in line from the Hunger Games trilogy, Mockingjay has been said by critics to have "kicked the brutal violence up a notch in an edge-of-your-seat plot" and "the best yet, a beautifully orchestrated and intelligent novel that succeeds on every level", so how can you NOT read this one?!? Non-stop twists and turns, action and adventure, you will end up reading the entire book in a sitting or two. With the movie being released soon, this is a must-read for the summer! 72 | triangle style

Taylor Beasley's Top 3 Books for Kids: Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick At first it seems like this book is telling two different stories, one using words and one using pictures. The more you read, the more you notice how they are related to each other and then there is a surprising ending. The book is over 600 pages, but it goes fast.

Wonder by R.J. Palacio This book is different because it is told by several different people sharing their own point of view and thoughts. The main character looks different because he was born with something wrong with his face, but he's just a regular 11 year old kid. It's neat to read how others think and feel about him and the ending is really nice. This book shows how we are all the same on the inside and should treat each other with kindness no matter what.

Prisoner B-3087 by Alan Gratz Prisoner B-3087 is the true story of Yanek Gruener and how he survived ten different concentration camps after the Nazis took over his country. This book gave a lot of detail of what the Jews had to go through and I realized not all of people are as lucky as we are to have an army to stand up for us.

ask anna Hi Anna — I am a new Mom and am having a difficult time keeping up with stylish trends. What is the latest eyebrow trend and how often should I get my brows waxed? I have dark and thick brows. Recently I had them waxed and I think the esthetician made them too thin! She also thinned them out with scissors? Is that normal? Please help, I have limited time. — Harper Cole Lucky you…dark, thick brows, I’m jealous! Listen; forget about “eyebrow trends”, those need to be restricted to models on fashion runways. Eyebrows need to compliment the shape of your face and eyes. A well-shaped brow can transform a persons’ entire face and creating the proper arch can actually open up a persons’ eyes making them look years younger. Here are a few tips for achieving the perfect shape brows. First, brush the brows upward using a disposable mascara wand, next trim any stray hairs. The eyebrows should start where the inner corner of your eye starts. Hold a pencil vertically against the nose to the inner corner of the eye. Where the pencil hits your brow bone is where your brow should start. Lastly, take the pencil and hold it from your nostril to the outer corner of the eye. The point where the pencil touches the brow is where the brow should end. Creating the arch of the brow can be a bit trickier and that is where the help of a licensed skin care expert can really be beneficial. Unfortunately, creating beautiful brows is an art and not all "experts" are equally talented. It sounds like your brows were over waxed and thus thinned out too much. My advice is to let them grow back out and try again (with someone different) making sure they wax to clean up excess hair but tweeze to create the shape and arch. Remember this…“Your brows are sisters not twins” so don’t worry about making them look exactly identical. Best of Luck. Anna. Anna Porrazzo owns Synergy Spa in Raleigh and teaches corrective makeup and innovative skin care to dermatologists, plastic surgeons, estheticians and spa owners worldwide. Class for Half Celebrates 10 Years! North Raleigh’s hidden treasure! Since opening in April 2004, Owner Sharon Fender has made a point to carry a diverse selection for women shopping on varying budgets. Offering high end designer labels such as Chanel, St John, and Tory Burch to satisfy the woman looking for the item she has always dreamed of while also being keenly aware of the woman who loves the brand names such as Ann Taylor, Chicos, and Banana Republic. Other popular clothing lines often seen here are designers such as Lilly Pulitzer, lululemon, and Free People. Whether you are looking for boho chic or casual elegance in a size 0 to a size 18, there is something here for everyone! Since discovering there were shoppers who really wanted designer clothes and handbags, but needed to pay in installments Fender began offering a layaway program. “When I first opened, I maintained another retail job in the evening,” said owner Sharon Fender who comes from a background of accounting and retail sales. “My first consignors were my co-workers and customers. Before I had my shop space, I would meet them in the parking lot of Fresh Market to collect their consignment items.” But how she’s grown. Consignment has more competition today, both in the local market (at least eight new stores have opened in this area) as well as the online and phone app arena. Consumer options to both buy and sell clothing are numerous. After a decade on North Market Drive, Fender says the best landmark to find her shop is to turn off of Old Wake Forest Road between the Red Lobster and Kanki. She is then two stores down from the Stained Glass Center and in the same section as ReTails Thrift Shop. Julie Jones, who has been Fenders employee for over 5 years says “We have learned that often it is about the ‘hunt’ for the perfect item. Perhaps a $10 Target top looks fabulous with a pair of $100 jeans and that’s why offering a variety is important.” So, What is Fender looking forward to in the next 10 years? “to prosper and expand, as well as do more for the community,” she said.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE BACK? It is WONDERFUL to be back! I love what I do and I love my customers and clients. DESCRIBE THE NEW SPACE? Annie's Attic's new location is spectacular! It is one of the oldest buildings in downtown Cary, built in 1925. With it's high tin ceiling and freshly painted taupe walls, the store is elegant and inviting. I've 'girled it up' (of course) with some of my favorite fashion sketches and lots of green plants! And, of course, my favorite decoration of all a picture of my daughter on the front counter to greet everyone who stops in to shop! HOW HAS DOWNTOWN CARY CHANGED? Downtown Cary is becoming more pedestrian and family friendly, and there are more shops and restaurants popping up that will appeal to people of all ages. There are more festivals and family events that give people something fun and different to do on their weekends. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR POPULAR DESIGNERS?

I sell a lot of beautiful items and I truly am fortunate to have such a wonderful client base. Tory Burch and Lilly Pulitzer are always popular, and we sell a lot of Diane von Furstenberg, Trina Turk, and most of the designer boutique brands. Of course, Anthropologie merchandise, Banana Republic and Talbots are always great staples. We do not accept items from discount department stores such as H & M, Wal-Mart, Target or Old Navy.

WHAT ONE THING THAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT ANNIES NOW? To be honest with you, I have kept almost everything about Annie's Attic the same as it has been since 1998. I am a hands-on business owner who values customer service and quality merchandise. Above all, I love coming to work every day because I believe I can have a positive impact on our downtown Cary community and I enjoy the relationships I have built and will continue to build through the years.

aging gracefully Written By Lou Scott

For the last several Fathers Days in a row I have thought about how nurturing my daughter’s Godfather has been and in doing so have become aware of the many ways his kindnesses have been nurturing to me as well. Bringing this to mind made me ask myself whom I considered to be father figures in my own life. I was surprised by some of my answers. For the people I chose weren’t necessarily those who had faithfully nurtured me throughout the years; they were the ones who changed the direction of my life. The first person I chose was someone who sang to me when I was a baby. I knew how important he had been because when I heard a Russian lullaby in class, I had an overwhelming physical reaction. Tears came to my eyes and a sense of being cradled in someone’s arms flowed over me. I later learned that the only person who could get me to sleep when I was crying was the Russian man down the hall during the war who said what he missed most was singing to his children at bedtime. When I was almost five Uncle Don and Aunt Edna came for an Easter visit. Because they wanted to get on their way to Montreal early the next morning, they said they would let themselves out. However when I heard them stir in the morning, I crept downstairs and got out the corn flakes and put them on the table. However, there were barely any left. So back upstairs I went and brought down all my Easter jelly beans and poured them in each bowl. When my uncle came downstairs, he exclaimed what a wonderful table I had set. He poured milk on those jelly beans, declaring he had never had a more charming hostess or a more delicious breakfast.

He went on and on for years afterward, praising me every time he saw me for being the most charming of hostesses and for giving him the best breakfast he had ever had. And with great seriousness he also declared the most fun he had had in his entire life was when I was eight years old and we climbed all those steps to Mount Royal. He hadn’t had such a good time since he was a small boy he said. I felt I must indeed be an interesting person. It went a long way in helping me overcome my shyness. Even though Uncle Don obviously found me perfectly charming, coming from a family of extroverts was overpowering for me, as my easygoing mother liked nothing better than a good party and I found them pointless and myself inadequate for feeling that way. One man who helped me feel I was just fine the way I was, it was in my basic nature and my heavenly father was the one who put it there, was the Presbyterian minister who led my confirmation class. Every week, while driving me back and forth to class, we talked about deeply philosophical and spiritual matters and what they meant in respect to the morality of a quiet life well-lived. I felt as if someone had taken a key to a most special door and opened it for me. But it was a teacher who gave me good, solid advice. after I had written and rewritten a paper about the beginning of civilization, gathering much more information than anyone needs for a Freshman Humanities class. When I didn’t get the paper in on time, he gave me an incomplete. When I still didn’t get it in by the end of the term, he simply waived the paper and averaged my grades. On his own time he walked me through the monolithic books I had read. It wasn’t meant to be a Ph.D thesis he explained. “Going above and beyond doesn’t

require going above and beyond the above and beyond to get a good grade.” That advice helped me not to overwhelm myself with too much information. He made me promise that in the future I would get any paper I wrote in on time. If I wanted to explore the topic in more detail, I could always do so on my own later. Sometimes being there during a difficult time in one’s life is all that’s needed. During one in mine, my grandfatherly Dr. Greenberg drove all the way to Philadelphia from Maryland simply to take me out to a good restaurant and to reassure me in person that I would in time get past these heartbreaking moments. After dropping me off after dinner, he went on his way. His single act of driving all those miles through heavy traffic to talk with me in person was more important than even the comforting words he said. Before there was a disabilities act that prevented job discrimination, getting a job was almost impossible for me to find. But Navy Captain Nickerson, who barely knew me, made up his mind that I was the person he wanted to outfit the Ships Intermediary Maintenance Activity being built on base and of which he would be the new Commanding Officer. I was not then and never had been in the military, and to this day I don’t know why he selected me. A maverick, and a very good one at that, he was the sort of man who got results, the sort of man people don’t say no to. He told Washington he needed three waivers for me, and a week later I was on the job. To say I was inexperienced is a gross exaggeration but he had made up his mind that I could do the job and do it I did by working almost around the clock and sending for allowance lists from other facilities. I felt competent and proud of myself for earning the confidence of a man with such a fierce reputation. But, like most of the men I mentioned -except my daughter’s ninety-six year old Godfather, he is now deceased. Nonetheless, I honor him and all the others who made such a difference in my life on this Father’s Day.

movie night Written by Heather S. Parsons • heather@trianglestyle.com

Inspector Morse No matter where it starts, in youth or in middle age, every story has its beginning. From 1987 until 2000, we followed the story of Chief Inspector Detective Morse of the Oxford City Police Force, when he was already well into his middle age. Once a student at Oxford’s Beaumont College, Morse sprinkles his observations, even in the middle of a murder investigation, with lively quotes from an obscure passage in ancient history or a certain concept in philosophy. But, because his investigations may lead to the highest levels of the university, his classical education sometimes unravels clues another detective might miss. No one however admires his acerbic wit, though it keeps life moving in the department. When Sergeant Lewis is asked why he puts up with it, he answers, “Because he’s the best.” Even so, Morse often leaps to conclusions. Yet in spite of his flaws, there is something tender about Morse and you see it when he sings in the university’s choir. You see it in how he treats women during an investigation, you see it even in the how he cares for his classic red Jaguar. There is something lonely about him that you just want to cradle. Yet, when he is by himself in the evenings, listening to Wagner or Mozart with a glass of ‘real ale” beside him, reading Thomas Hardy or solving a difficult crossword puzzle or anagram, Morse no longer seems lonely. And neither do I. For I like the way Morse lives his life. I like his literary quotes, the heart rendering classical music at the beginning of each episode, the scenes of Oxford University in the background, but most of all I like Inspector Morse.

Endeavour, the Pilot episode and Series 1 Aired on PBS mystery in 2013, in this series we go back twenty years in Inspector Morse’s life to his first days on the Oxford Police Force, to the time when he was known as Detective Constable Endeavour Morse. Joining the police force “wasn’t something he planned; it was where he ended up.” Having had little direction as a child, his father was a taxi driver who lost his license and his mother died when he was twelve years old, this is understandable. It was a bleak, lonely childhood. But when he found a recording of Madame Butterfly, he “knew for the first time there was beauty in the world.” It changed his life. Earning a scholarship to Oxford University, where he read classics, opened a whole new world. Regardless, following a failed engagement, he left 80 | triangle style

without earning a degree, becoming a cipher clerk in the Signal Corps -- perhaps the precursor of his love of crossword puzzles and anagrams. Yet the Signal Corps “didn’t take.” But his exceptional mind, familiarity with the university and the classics, as well as his talent for deciphering clues, all came together in the Oxford Police Force. Taking Morse under his wing, down to earth Detective Inspector Thursday cautions him to show “a bit less of the great detective and a little bit more of the humble policeman. No one can teach you the first one and any fool can learn the second. Learn your trade.”

Pride and Prejudice (1995) Starring Colin Firth as Darcy and Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennet, this lively six-part adaptation of Jane Austen’s book is considered the best. The cast, including the five marriageable Bennet daughters, two of them quite silly, they take after their mother, is pitch perfect. Although the Bennets live in a well-appointed home, nicely situated in the English countryside of the early 1800s, if the five Bennet daughters don’t soon find husbands before Mr. Bennet’s death, it may well be the last they see of it. For according to English law, the house will revert to the closest male relative, even a distant cousin. Thus, when Mrs. Bennet learns a ball is being given at the home of a well-to-do neighbor. there’s quite a stir. For she is sure at least one of two of the wellhealed gentlemen in attendance will take notice of her daughters. The handsome Mr. Darcy is one of the well-healed gentlemen at the ball. Although certainly one of the richest men in the district, he is unfortunately one of its most arrogant. When Elizabeth, the most sensible of the Bennets, meets Mr. Darcy, she finds him a terrible snob, with a bearing that is both abrupt and rude. From that time forward, she does all she can to avoid him. However, Mr. Darcy’s hostile exterior belies a generous, thoroughly moral man. He is also an honest one, telling Elizabeth, although well aware of her “inferior social standing, embarrassing relatives and silly sisters,” her integrity and lively intelligence set her apart and he has fallen fiercely fallen in love with her. After learning Darcy saved her silly sister from ruin, and didn’t mention it, she overlooks his manner of expressing himself. After visiting his magnificent estate and coming across him just as he emerges from a spontaneous dip in the lake, his shirt clinging to his well defined body, Elizabeth has the good sense to become his wife and Darcy has had the good sense to have asked her.
