IT’S HARD TO BE A MORNING PERSON IF YOU HAVEN’T SLEPT ALL NIGHT.

The average adult needs seven hours of sleep a night. And if you don't get it, you're going to be in a below-average mood. The DUX® Bed can help. We have four times as many springs as an ordinary mattress. Which may not only help you sleep better, it helps you sleep longer. An hour longer, according to independent research. For details, visit Duxiana.com and start waking up on the right side of the bed.

IT’S TIME TO REPLACE YOUR MATTRESS.

Speaking as a woman careering towards her, ahem, ‘middle age’, I can remember back, in the mist of time, when the biggest decision I had when buying a pair of jeans was whether to go for Levi’s, Lee or Wrangler. And possibly which belt to wear with them. Now there’s an ever-confusing array of styles —from boyfriend to low-rise, through skinny and boot cut. But which is the best style for your body type?

10:28 PM

A unique women's boutique. We specialize in clothing and accessories for the woman who has a passion for fashion and is smitten by all things lovely!

••• HOURGLASS ••• Ladies with an hourglass figure have a proportional body and then some! Think Dita Von Teese: great cleavage, nipped-in waist, and big beautiful hips and butt. Curves, curves, curves! For you ladies pretty much any style of jeans will fit you well, but if you really want to make the most of your natural assets, then go for low-rise jeans – these will accentuate your small waist. Similarly a pair of skinny jeans will show off your fuller hips and lean legs to perfection.

1105 West Main St, Durham 919 530 1000 www.thesmittenboutique.com

Mon. - Sat. 10:00am - 6:00pm | Sun. 1:00 - 5:00pm

If you don’t fancy skinnies, try a kick flare, which will mimic the curves of the upper part of your body. Jeans that stick to your hips are much more flattering to a curvy shape than baggy jeans, so try a pair with plenty of stretch that are a size smaller than you normally wear, and avoid boyfriend cut at all costs. They’ll do you no favors.

••• PEAR-SHAPED ••• We all know the classic pear shape – narrow up on top and with fuller hips and thighs. If this is you, the main thing is to try to make your hips look less wide, so the first thing you should look for in a pair of jeans is a darker color. Avoid washed out jeans like the plague. Fuller hips also tend to make legs look shorter, so avoid skinny jeans, which will just accentuate your shape. Try straight leg jeans, which will make your legs look longer, or boot-cut which will divert attention from your middle area. Low-rise is the best waistband for a pear-shaped gal, as they will make your bottom look smaller. fall | 17

AFFORDABLE FASHIONS FOR YOUR EVERYDAY STYLE

10:28 PM

Page 3

One great new innovation for ladies who have a little more ‘bang to their buck’, if you know what I mean, is a pair of jeans that are made with a lower rise at the front and a higher rise at the back. This means your behind is fully covered and you don’t suffer from ‘builders bum’ – never a good look, not even on a builder! Oh, and try to avoid ‘showy’ pockets with embellishments or flaps – they just bring attention to your derriere. Equally, really small pockets will just make everything look bigger.

••• APPLE ••• The apple shape is pretty much the opposite of the pear shape - with larger shoulders and midriff, and narrow hips and slim legs. The big thing to avoid with this shape is a pair of tapered jeans – this will just accentuate the fact that your shoulders are wider than your hips. Stick to boot-cut or flared jeans because they widen your lower half and make you look much more in proportion. In terms of waistband you should go for a mid-rise jean – a higher waist will make you look like your grandma and a low-rise always carries the risk of giving you a muffin top. Also, try to wear a floatier, non-clingy top that hides your lumps and bumps – the gypsy-style tops that are around at the moment are perfect.

With prices under $100 you'll be sure to find something to add to your wardrobe. LAFAYETTE VILLAGE 8480 Honeycutt Road, Raleigh 919-846-0014

••• RECTANGLE ••• It’s a bit of a harsh description, but a rectangle body shape is basically one that’s not curvy – a boyish figure might be more polite. The main thing to remember with dressing the rectangle figure is to try to imply or create curves. In the case of jeans, it’s better to go for boot-cut or flared jeans to add a bit of shape - and try to avoid straight cut jeans. Skinny jeans are a good option, too, if you’re not too thin, as they’ll cling to any curves you DO have. To add curves to a flat bottom go for jeans with flap pockets or with embellishment or embroidery on the pockets. Pockets that sit higher on the back can also help your bottom look lifted.

JeansArticle.e$S:TSM Beauty Myths

8/26/13

Around the waist, try to go for jeans that are mid-rise – they can then be cinched in with a belt to give you more shape.

10:28 PM

Page 4

LADIES FASHION FOR YOUR EVERYDAY STYLE

••• LONG LEGS ••• If you have long legs but a short torso you’ll need to find a pair of jeans that make your upper body look longer, so go for low-rise hip huggers. Other than that, you can probably carry off any style of jeans – skinny, boot-cut, flared – although it’s probably best to avoid straight-cut, which carries the risk of making you look all leg. If you’re trying to look like you have a bit more meat on your bones, try lighter colored denim, which will make you look a bit bigger. Also try jeans with low rear pockets, as they will make your bottom look higher and rounder. Try a pair of cropped or turned-up jeans that stop above the ankle, which will fool the eye into thinking your legs, aren’t as long as they are.

••• PETITE •••

Try a high-waisted jean if you’re short but slim; they make it appear that your legs start further up and make you look taller. TS

Fashions that appeal to ages 40 and up. Sizing is a missy fit with styles that can be worn for work or casual days. LAFAYETTE VILLAGE 8480 Honeycutt Road, Raleigh 919-846-0014 WAVERLY PLACE 302 Colonades Way, Cary 919-851-5232 (XL-XXXL)

The main thing gals with short legs want to do is to try and make their legs look longer, so the first bit of advice is to avoid turn-ups or cropped jeans – they will just make you look shorter than you are. You also don’t want to look like you’re drowning in your clothes, so try to avoid flared jeans. Stick with skinnies, boot-cut or straight legged jeans that finish below the ankle and wear them with a good pair of heels. As well as actually giving you more height, high heels improve your posture and make you stand up straighter.

Dealing with Unrealistic Expectations Most of the time, the picture you bring in to your stylist boasting the model with the perfect hair has a fan running during the photo shoot, not to mention a team of stylists constantly working to maintain that particular look for a short period of time. When looking at hair photos, pay attention to your hair type as well as the hair in the picture. Try looking at and bringing in more than one photo of a particular style - that way, if the exact style you want will work, then you can show your stylist what you like from the different ones. Coloring Outside of the Box Most box color grabs onto hair making it a difficult process to remove. The two biggest problems with those who have used box color are: 1) It is pretty uneven 2) It dries the hair completely out. To get an even color should only take a few appointments, so condition and give your hair a break (so it doesn't break!) But it takes a little more time to get the condition of your hair back, but it can be done. Bad Bangs If you cut your bangs too short, the good news is that they will probably grow out pretty quickly. Stylists can usually reshape bangs and give them more style during the growing process. Hairspray will be your best friend during this time. My personal favorite, to keep each hair in place, is Aveda Control Force Firm Hold hairspray. Your flat iron will also be your best buddy during the grow out phase. When you flat iron your hair, you gain a few extra millimeters of length that you don't normally have. So don't freak out, put down the box of tissues and grab the flat iron! Color Catastrophe For just plain old bad color, find someone who is sporting a hair color you do like and get them to go with you to THEIR hairdresser! By doing this, the stylist can compare hair types to determine whether or not your hair will come out looking

Over Processing Problems If the issue is over processed hair, book a haircut with a conditioning treatment. Your stylist will let you know the recommended time between appointments. When your hair becomes too light, stylists can simply add a toner to darken your hair. This can also help with shine and conditioning. If your hair becomes too dark, try a few shampoos. your color will probably fade a little. If you still feel it is too dark, one option is to add some natural highlights throughout, this will lighten up your color overall.

A Bad Perm There are only a few things you can do if you have a bad perm. First start using a shampoo and conditioner that helps eliminate frizz. Next schedule an appointment for a deep conditioning treatment. Finally, get your hair trimmed regularly. Once it grows out to a length you feel comfortable with you will be able to cut the perm completely out.

Now Carrying Frockets!

How to Get the Look You'll Love “I want my haircut EXACTLY like the one in this picture, only I don’t want the part there, I want it longer on the sides. Oh, and can you layer it differently?” I saw this quote once and couldn’t help but laugh because it's so common. Pictures serve as a great foundation when understanding your hair can’t always look EXACTLY like the style in the picture, there are too many variables between you and the person in the picture. Trust your stylist so together you can determine what it is you realistically want out of your hair. Top tip from the pros: Do not be afraid to try a new cut, color or even a different product. The beautiful thing about hair is how yours will never be the same as the next persons. No matter your problem, there is always a solution in the endless options of cuts and colors. Also, pay attention to what does or does not work for you over time. And remember, at the end of the day your hair will always be your number one accessory. How to Avoid a Hair Nightmare First and foremost, realize that we all have a story to tell about fixing our own hair. For example, when I was younger I had a friend with bangs that I just loved! Her bangs were perfect and I was determined to have bangs just like that, immediately. So my dad, decided to trim my bangs to make me look exactly like my friend. Well, we can all imagine how this story turned out. I was stuck with a huge forehead and horribly short bangs! The moral of the story is, don’t let your dad, friend, sister, brother, or (especially) yourself cut or color your hair. Even if you are having a bad hair day, take a deep breath and consult a professional. It is important to find someone you can trust and communicate with to get the best results for your hair. TS

Giuliana Rancic Gets Personal

She has overcome some of life's most overwhelming obstacles and all before the ripe old age of 40! The lively fashion forward co-host of E! News and no holds barred Couture Cop of E!'s Fashion Police, Giuliana Rancic, has also recently entered her sixth successful season starring in the Style reality series "Giuliana & Bill". Giuliana has also (bravely!) worked with her husband, Bill Rancic, on a successful book and NBC's hit relationship reality show "Ready For Love".

Rancic has had her share of hardships in the last few years. She has battled infertility, cancer, life changing surgery, a difficult recovery and all in the public eye. But it is her grace and zest for life has inspired countless fans (not to mention, she has looked fantastic the entire time!). So how does this fashionista, hostess, author, celebrity, wife, mother...(you get the picture!) do it all so effortlessly? We spoke with Giuliana about life, love and living in the moment.

Right off the bat, how would you describe your style? What trends are you loving right now and which ones are you avoiding like the plague? Being a new mom, how do you see your style changing? I would describe my style as edgy, yet chic. I like to be comfortable. While you usually see me in cute dresses and skirts on E! News, I don’t typically dress like that on the weekends, especially now that I am a mom. I love throwing on a pair of J Brand skinny jeans and one of my tops from my HSN clothing line G by Giuliana Rancic. Anything that is easy breezy! If I am going out to dinner or to a party, I will throw on a pair of heels and a blazer, but otherwise you will find me in skinny jeans and a t-shirt.

Make a Spectacle of Yourself Filo d’Oro pendant in gold or platinum from NIESSING Germany, one of the world’s premier designers of contemporary, modernist jewelry.

You are inundated daily with the hottest designers in the world! Who are some of your favorites and what makes them special? I love the creations of Valentino and Versace, but I am also a fan of affordable street style. While it is incredible to see a gorgeous Valentino gown coming down the red carpet, it’s not exactly practical for me to wear anything like that! I love the designs at Zara and Topshop!

Filo d’Oro pendants $1345 to 2540 Niessing jewelry from $150

How are you feeling after all that you have been through in the past few years and what is coming up for you this year? Right now, I am definitely living in the moment and enjoying every single day. DEBBY LUBELL Curio sweaters embody everything we love about dressing for fall- rich hues, comfy fabrics and stylish edge. Debby Lubell designs for the fashion-forward sweater line in New York, but can’t resist the casual allure of the City of Oaks.

Pants That Fit

Anywhere, Any Time, Any Age

How did you become a fashion designer? I grew up in New York City. I have always loved knits. I was taught as a child to knit, crochet and embroider by my European grandmother. I began making clothes for my dolls, and then later myself. Eventually I attended The Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC and began a career as a knitwear designer. I live in NYC several days a week, and return to Raleigh to relax and enjoy the casual life on the weekends. What could be better? What do you love about designing for Curio? Curio sweaters are fun to design because they are usually an interesting blend of yarns and textures. There is always something special about them. Often the colors are unique, subtle mixes or rainbows. The yarns and stitches are designed by us, so that we can keep our product special. We try to find silhouettes that are simple, yet trendy and flattering. We try to give our product the look of a handcrafted piece.

NEW FALL STYLES NOW IN

Describe the woman who wears Curio sweaters. The Curio customer is looking for a casual piece that will add some spice to her wardrobe. We think of our sweaters as cool accessories to a great pair of jeans. Where do you find your inspiration? I find inspiration everywhere. In movies, on TV, on the street, in the designer market. I especially look to accessories for unusual details like interesting hardware, great color blocking combos, interesting lace-up or stitch details. Accessories seem to be where all the excitement is these days. What should we be on the lookout for this fall? Fall is all about rich color and texture. Since the bottoms are still mostly skinny, I like the tops a little slouchy and comfortable.

Jewelry designer and maker Molly Anderson creates handmade necklaces and earrings that “gracefully balance current trends with lasting beauty.” Molly’s talent, drive and passion have made mollybeads a staple collection in stores and wardrobes throughout the South!

MOLLY ANDERSON

What is your main source of inspiration? I follow current trends to some degree, but I find inspiration all around me in daily life. The colors of nature, shapes of buildings and landscapes. I also get a lot of inspiration from shopping for beads and components. I can be in a showroom full of beads and know exactly what I will use a specific bead for in my collections. How did you get started as a jewelry designer and maker? I started making jewelry when I was fourteen years old at a summer camp, where I learned how to make intricate beaded earrings. Shortly after, I began selling them to stores in Central Florida. By the time I graduated from high school, mollybeads was being carried in ten stores. I continued making jewelry on a smaller scale while attending college at Elon. Once I settled in Raleigh in 1999, I began making jewelry more regularly and focused on selling to even more stores. What has been the most rewarding part of starting your own business? Waking up every day and doing what I love. I dreamed of making mollybeads a full time business for a long time. I had a successful sales career for a number of years and made jewelry on the side. In March of 2008 I quit my full time career to focus solely on 36 | triangle style

mollybeads. Now, we are in about 40 stores in the Southeast from Florida to Northern Virginia.

What is your favorite fall trend? Mixed chains and large statement necklaces with stones. Have you ever seen a perfect stranger wearing one of your designs? Yes. I love it! It makes me happy. Usually, I say something like "I love your necklace!" I will generally ask where they bought it, and then tell them that I'm Molly from mollybeads and that I personally made it! What gives mollybeads their charm? There are a lot of jewelry lines in the marketplace today. What makes us different is that I make all the jewelry by hand. There is a very limited run of all the pieces, and many of them are one of a kind. What’s next for mollybeads? Smitten boutique in Durham has carried my line for about six years now, and we are getting ready to launch a “store within a store” concept. Smitten will soon carry a much wider range of mollybeads, including my newest items! Visit Smitten boutique in Durham to shop Molly’s original creations!

the pros pick we asked five professionals who know a thing or two about beauty products

WHAT ARE FOUR MUST-HAVES IN YOUR MEDICINE CABINET? Tonya Norwood, Modern Enhancement Salon Spa

Best known for her amazing transformations using Hair & Eyelash extensions and Hair Replacement on over 5000 clients on the East Coast. She is also the Owner and founder of Modern Enhancement Salon Day Spa of Raleigh, NC.

MOROCCAN OIL HYDRATING STYLING CREAM Love this stuff! Smoothes hair for straight blowdry's, gives a little bit of hold for a bouncy flip blowout! It hydrates, fights frizz, and gives a light hold while providing shine and silkiness to my otherwise dry, dull hair. And always great to refresh that day old hair with a delicious smell!

TOPPIK I call this my sprinkle, perfection powder! Disguises thinning and gray roots, which allows me to give the illusion of big sassy hair (along with my fabulous hair extensions) It's a colored powder that sprinkles on and lasts all day.

SOTHYS HYDRAVANCE CREAM Being 40, having great skin is very important to me. It's mandatory to keep our skin hydrated as dehydrated skin is actually one of the main causes of aging skin. I love that It gives super hydration, without a slick oil face look. The scent is so divine!

KERASTASE OLEO RELAX SHAMPOO A Miracle for truly rebellious hair. Nothing is as effective to transform the "Big & Poofy" into "Sleek & Silky". It’s expensive, but it works. Add the masque for super control!

Cherie Schouteren, The Purple Door Day Spa

Cherie involved in the skin care industry for over eighteen years. She has earned a reputation for personalizing and tailoring specialty skin treatments. Having been trained in Southern California, the skin care techniques she uses are among the most advanced available. She has completed her advanced education through the Dermal Institute, and Jan Marini Skin Research

JAN MARINI ANTIOXIDIANT DAILY FACE PROTECTANT This is the BEST facial sunscreen I have ever used. It wears perfectly under makeup. 38 | triangle style

GLO MINERALS LASH CONDITIONER Great for someone like me who doesn't have a lot of lashes. I use daily under my mascara. They really thicken and extend my lashes.

YOUNGBLOOD MINERAL LIQUID FOUNDATION This is a foundation that provides a very light coverage. It blends in perfectly with my own skin and it feels like I'm not wearing any foundation.

GLOTHERAPUTIC EYE TREATMENT CREAM I started seeing results. my lines were softer and not as harsh. Little on the pricey side but totally worth it for the results it gives me.

Anna Porrazzo, Synergy Spa & Aesthetics

Anna Porrazzo owns Synergy Spa & Aesthetics in Raleigh and teaches corrective makeup and innovative skin care to dermatologists, plastic surgeons, estheticians and spa owners worldwide.

NEOSTRATA FOAMING GLYCOLIC WASH: I seriously look forward to washing my face every day with this pH-balanced, soap-free formulation. It pumps out like the froth of a delicious latte yet this ever so delicate wash provides deep cleansing without irritation. It contains 18% Glycolic and 2% Lactobionic Acid that lightly exfoliates leaving the skin ultra-soft and smooth. ELTAMD UV CLEAR 46: This is an excellent daily light weight broad spectrum Sun Protector. I love it because it features hyaluronic acid to moisturize and Niacinamide which refines the skin to clear pores and reduce shine. A must have for every day protection!

SYNERGY RETINOL COMPLEX: No one and I mean no one should go without using a Retinol (yes that includes sensitive skin types such as Rosacea as well). This is my all-time favorite ingredient because Retinol which is derived from Vitamin A works miracles, from helping clear up congestion and breakouts to minimizing fine lines and wrinkles. Use this product every other night under your preferred moisturizer and your skin will be looking younger, clearer and more radiant in no time!

PHYTO C SUPERHEAL O-LIVE GEL: How did my skin survive before I started using this powerful Vitamin C, E, A with olive leaf extract combo? It actively promotes cell absorption to achieve a maximum healing and anti-oxidizing effect while simultaneously protecting skin from UV damage. And as an extra bonus it helps smooth fine wrinkles by stimulating the production of collagen.

Amber Self, Bloom Skin Spa

Amber has a unique combination of getting results for her clients and taking their skin to the next level with a holistic approach. She specializes in all target and corrective treatments such as anti-aging, acne, pigmentation, sun damage and rosacea. She performs Ultherapy (FDA approved Non-Surgical Lifting procedure), facials, enzyme, ultrasonic and medical grade peels, LED photopulsation, microdermabrasion, treatment of spider veins, cherry angiomas, skin tags and many more modalities. Amber is a Master Aesthetician with Eminence Organic Skin Care and holds the highest certification as an "Ultherapist

HERBAL SPOT SERUM - I use this as a preventative or spot treatment serum for blemishes or pesky hormonal breakouts. Key ingredients include vitamin C rich Rosehip, Bioflavonoids for moisturizing the skin, with also a booster of antioxidants, vitamins, Coenzyme Q10, and Alpha Lipoic Acid to improve the appearance of skin. SUN DEFENSE MINERALS - These Hypoallergenic, non-clogging, natural minerals provide water-resistant SPF 30 sun protection. They can be used on the tennis court, golf course or by the pool. They are perfect for evening out my complexion, and keeping my shine at bay.

NEROLI EYE SERUM - This potent eye serum with retinol alternative and Swiss apple stem cells is a great age corrective serum for the thin skin around the eyes. The Natural Retinol Alternative Complex smooth’s the appearance of wrinkles, and increases collagen production. Coconut Water adds moisture, pH balancing, and toning. It absorbs quickly and there is not a greasy look or feel. CITRUS LIP BALM - I put this on every morning before I leave the house. This petroleum free citrus treat for the lips with shea butter and sunflower seed oil give lips maximum hydration and a sexy sheen. With continued use, over a 4-week period, the natural peptides make lips look voluptuous and youthful. fall | 39

LATISSE: As the only FDA approved product to make your lashes thicker, fuller and longer, this stuff is an eyelift in a bottle! It is an easy way to refresh your eyes and look years younger. NIA 24 STRENGTHENING COMPLEX This rich creamy product delivers intense moisture powered by ceramides and clinical strength proniacin (vitamin B3). It provides antioxidants that firm, tone and tighten skin, reducing fine lines. It also contains brighteners that lift the discoloration due to sun damage. LUMIERE I was never a believer in eye creams until I read the scientific studies on this product! An intensive, linesmoothing eye cream, Lumiere uses collagen stimulating growth factors to reduce dark circles and caffeine to help alleviate under-eye puffiness. Lumiere also provides an amazing 30% reduction in the appearance of wrinkles around the eyes.

Chantal Allam, 37, mother of two, from Chapel Hill:

Specializing in

Catching up with friends, sipping wine, enjoying a spot of shopping all at the same time from the comfort of home -- what more could a lady want? I recently attended such a gathering hosted by Sherisse Marion of Ryan Riley, and I have to say, it was great fun and a special "ladies night out". As a mother of two young children, it's sometimes hard to get a break from it all, meet up with friends and spend a little time indulging myself. But this party proved the perfect setting to do just that. We all sat around the living room, sipping wine, nibbling on cheese, chatting -while leisurely perusing Sherisse's collection of clothes, bags and jewelry neatly set up in the corner. Everything was so cute, on-trend and reasonably priced, it was hard to decide what to get. And this is the best part: with all your friends on hand to watch you try on the goods and model, I got some great advice on what worked and what didn't. In the end, I went for a cute, multi-purpose denim tote bag. On any give day, it serves as a diaper bag, beach tote or market bag. I absolutely love it! I'd definitely recommend Ryan Riley for a ladies night out! Ryan Riley Wardrobe (919) 904-0064 www.ryanrileywardrobe.com see ad on page 63

HAPPY

APPS

APPS THAT WILL IMPROVE YOUR LIFE AT THE TOUCH OF A BUTTON I am late to the smartphone market. However, since I picked one up my life has not been the same. Need a map, directions? Google Maps will help. Stay in contact with your “hive” through Facebook and Twitter any time of the day. The most interesting thing about a smartphone is that it can help you be…smarter… and happier…and healthier, often for free. Here’s an example. A doctor whom I hadn’t seen in a while looked remarkably slimmer. When asked, he admitted that he had lost forty pounds and his wife had lost sixty. Figuring that he must have joined an expensive weight loss program or gym, I asked him how he did it. “We used this smartphone app called Lose It.” He explained that it was a meal tracking device which also allowed you to set goals and track progress. I had used something similar before on my computer, but that required writing down foods to log in later. This was perfect! I have been using Lose It since the late spring. I have lost ten pounds and feel that I have a better handle on the calorie-counts of certain foods, and it motivates me by showing a graph of my progress. With one touch I can alter my program to lose one or two pounds per week. The calorie tracker calculates the change immediately. There are countless other “happy apps” just like this that are free or low-cost, and can provide the guidance and encouragement you need to set and achieve those healthy goals you have. (Unless otherwise stated, all apps are available for iPhone, iPad, and Android devices). Written By Kelley Reep

APPS FOR FITNESS AND WEIGHT LOSS: WORKOUT TRAINER (Skimble) provides a number of free workouts based on your fitness goals and workout time. Like most free apps, this one only offers a limited amount of material, and wants you to upgrade to a “premium” program for a fee. However, there are enough good (video based) exercises to provide an effective workout in a time crunch. FITNESS BUDDY (Azumio) provides a library of exercises for every major muscle group. You can also download Legs Trainer, Chest Trainer, and Arms Trainer for free from Azumio. They provide a limited number of exercises that target the desired muscle group.

RUNTASTIC uses GPS to track your distance, time, speed, and calories burned. Runtastic can be used with any distance sport, not just running. 7 MINUTE WORKOUT (Bytesize) is, as it says, a seven minute workout with videos to assist in correct form and timing. There are some free workouts and some that cost a minimal amount. With recent studies confirming the value of short, intense workouts, this is a must for onthe-go fitness.

SLEEP MACHINE LITE is billed as a “customizable sound atmosphere application.” For those who don’t understand geek-speak, this is a white noise machine for your phone. Free for iPhone or iPad; there is a similar Relax Machine for Android users. Sweet dreams! TAKE A BREAK— Guided Meditations for Stress Relief (Meditation Oasis): Choose from either a 7 minute “work break” guided relaxation exercise, or a longer 13 minutes “stress relief” meditation. MY CYCLE PERIOD AND OVULATION TRACKER (MedHelp) is a simple, useful tool that allows users to track their cycle month by month. You can also identify when you are most fertile, and track your moods (if you wish!). GENIUS SCAN (The Grizzly Labs) is one of my favorite (free!) apps. You can turn any document into a PDF or JPEG file to save or email. I have used this in a pinch when I was having difficulty faxing a document or when I needed to scan something in a hurry. LOGOS QUIZ (Atico Mobile S.L.): I have to confess; I am not a “game” person. I’d much rather read or do some social networking than surf a subway or eat my way through a maze. The Logos Quiz is addictive and simple—how many logos do YOU recognize without the words attached? My teenagers (who won’t pay for a smartphone themselves) will steal my phone just to play this game.

Miss North Carolina

JOHNA

EDMONDS As Miss North Carolina what is one of your primary goals in 2013? It is critical this country faces its literacy and educational issues. My year of service as Miss North Carolina will be marked by my relentless pursuit to determine the source of our children’s inability to read with comprehension and fluency, and finding concrete and implementable solutions to improve this problem. I plan to give this issue a face and voice, and to promote and improve the overall literacy of our children through statewide educational policy changes that will reach every early childhood classroom in North Carolina. If you could change one misconception about pageants what would it be? Miss North Carolina routinely faces misconceptions about her purpose and relevance. By working to educate people about who Miss North Carolina is and what she does, I am able to show young women how similar they are to me. My leadership qualities, proven commitment to bettering my community, and my strong belief in the Miss America system allow me to serve as tangible proof of the success of this organization, and help me connect with young girls in North Carolina and across this nation. What would be the one thing people would be surprised to know about you? Prior to winning the title of Miss North Carolina, I was a huge proponent of both the elegant simplicity and unfettered sense of freedom that gym clothes and a pony tail contribute to the otherwise chaotic life of a young woman who thinks that each day is a new opportunity to conquer the world.

Do you have any sort of ritual you do before competitions? Let me preface this answer by saying that I can think of an astronomical amount of people who would each attempt to strangle my neck with their bare hands if they actually caught me in the act of doing what I'm about to divulge to you. But, in the spirit of candor, I'll take that risk. So, right before a competition, after months of pushing myself beyond virtually any and all of my preconceived limits, I always allow myself to indulge in a few (read as: the entire box) of the Double-Stuff Oreos. This is a ritual that hasn't failed me yet. At least, this is what I tell myself to continually justify doing it. You probably have seen your share of beauty tips back stage, any you can share? Less is best when it comes to applying make-up. A little foundation goes a long way. It’s better to start with less and to build it up to the coverage you want. It’s easier to slowly add product than it is to take it away. And always remember: wearing make-up doesn't "make" you beautiful--it is merely used to accentuate the natural beauty in all of us. What fashion trend are you really into right now? Wearing red lipstick! I absolutely love it! When I was a little girl, I vividly remember how stunning my mother looked when she wore her signature red lip stick. Little did she know, her iconic red lips would serve as a pillar in my beauty arsenal. I love that any girl can wear it. And, given my hectic schedule, I very much appreciate it's functionality: it can completely transform any look, taking it from drab to dreamy in a flash. It not only goes with classic cat eye makeup, but it also looks equally as gorgeous combined with simple eye makeup. Personally, I love the juxtaposition of wearing a bright red lip during the day, with minimal other makeup and just a simple tee, skinny jeans, and flats. It just screams ultra chic and feminine!

TRICK OR TREAT? THE PSYCHIC PHENOMENON It's that sensationally spooky time of year when ghouls, goblins and ghosts get you in the mood for fall's festivities. You hear about it on television and see it in the movies, but what ARE the psychic arts? With Halloween just around the corner, it may have you wondering "Where do these things actually come from?!?". After a little digging, here's what we found.... Written By Audrey D. For centuries, psychics and readers have been helping their clients see their past, present and future with more clarity. Today, a visit with a psychic isn't like the old Hollywood “woo-woo” stuff of smoke and mirrors; with mystical madams coaxing crystal balls to reveal the future right before your very eyes, (although, to be fair, a few do come close!) More often than not, however, modern psychic workers are pragmatic practitioners dedicated to helping their clients tap into their own intuition, which can guide followers with their free will decision-making and live an optimal life. For over 23 years, co-owners Cherry Lea and Bev Bockover, of Dancing Moon Books & Gifts in Raleigh, have been dedicated to helping their clients use intuition, spirituality and the psychic arts to help them “realize an awareness about who they are and what they are about.” Lea believes that energy and vibrations surround us and we can all be taught to feel and understand them, which will improve our lives. She hopes that her shop can “serve as a catalyst to help connect people with things that are useful to them.” Her goal is to encourage self-questioning so that we can “learn to respond, instead of just reacting.” Inside Dancing Moon, you'll find a variety of books, oracles and tarot card sets geared to get you thinking about the real questions you should be asking yourself, as part of your personal journey to find truly meaningful answers. The shop also offers a variety of workshops on things like understanding dreams, unblocking your chakaras, how to use essential oils for healing, exploring astrology, and even on occasion, seminars on ghosts. Lea and Bockover also opens their doors to “readers;” a variety of psychics, astrologists, numerologists and a myriad of other mystical disciplines, along with “healers,” such as massage therapists, reflexologists, reiki healers and energy workers who utilize the space to meet with private clients. Triangle Style had a chance to speak with a few area practitioners of the psychic arts to learn about their modalities. Yeah, we know what

you're thinking…but check these out with an open mind. Perhaps a visit with one of them is in your future? Intuitive Reader Author and radio personality, Diane Brandon, is not exactly a psychic, but rather describes herself as an “intuitive reader and teacher.” She uses her keen intuition and ability to sense energy to see the “invisible blueprints” of our lives. Brandon does not believe that she can predict the future, but can instead, shows her clients how to take actions in the present that will improve what is to come. Like a deep delving life coach, she's dedicated to helping others break free of “divine disconnect” and tap into their own self-awareness that will lead to more fulfilling lives. Brandon encourages her clients to use meditation to look further inside their psyche to seek out blockages that are keeping them from

performing at their best levels. With her intuitive guidance, Brandon helps clients open themselves up and listen to their own inner voice, leading to greater personal insight for growth on a spiritual level. In her experience, the feedback she provides her clients can help them transform their lives more that years of therapy. Astrology Long ago, astrology was viewed as fatalistic; with our life's plan all written out for us in the stars. Today, most contemporary astrologists recognize the important role of free will. An astrology chart can be looked at as a road map from the heavens that can guide you to make decisions that can optimize your future. Local astrologist, Paul Habit, explains that using the day, month and year of when you were born and took your first breath, an astrologist can create a chart of symbols which, “describe, not prescribe,” patterns and expectations. All, of course, open to interpretation.

During a session with an astrologist like Habit, you can expect to examine how your zodiac sign reveals the inner workings of your personality. Habit believes that by carefully looking at your moons, stars and planetary relationships, you will learn “how to make better decisions and find the best way to present and carry yourself.” An astrological reading can help you track trends along potential paths for everything from parenting issues to professional satisfaction and success. Hand Analysis Geanine Thompson believes that we have all the answers we need right at our fingertips. Literally. According to Thompson, “There is a direct connection between the brain and our hands through neuro-pathways.” With years of study, she has learned to read the lines, swirls and shapes of our hands to glean answers to our big picture questions. Even if you think you know yourself like the back of your hand, Thompson can see more. By looking at your digits, she help your delve into your life's deeper purpose and let you know what obstacles might be standing in your way.

As Thompson, a former MBA/Wall Street type, describes it, “Hand analysis is non-predictive. It shows us a snapshot of what is going on right now.” However, while most of lines of our hands may change over time, “the fingerprints, which represent our life's purpose, always stays the same.” Thompson explains that the process is “systematic and data driven,” and can be taught to anyone who is interested in learning how to use this as a tool. Even she, herself, is surprised just how accurate your hand can be as a “roadmap to your life.” Tarot Cards Beth Owl's Daughter was a skeptic, but after over 41 years of reading tarot cards, she claims she can vouch for their accuracy. She sees tarot readings as an ancient and powerful tool that can “forecast” rather than tell your fortune.

According to Owl's Daughter, (the name she took in honor of her Spirit Guide), these decks of cards, richly illustrated cards, with pictures and characters, serve as metaphors for the human experience. As an experienced reader, she can understand and interpret the cards, acting as a “tour guide” to highlight your influences and your potential. “But,” Owl's Daughter reminds, “we always have free will to make our own choices.” Though around for thousands of years, many folks are scared of tarot cards because they have been abused and misused. Owl's Daughter is clear that these cards will NOT summon bad spirits and that, “the cards will only point to the way towards a positive journey of enlightenment. They are always geared towards understanding humanity and love.” Owl's Daughter believes that tarot cards are astute at pointing out trends that deserve our attention. She believes that “the right cards get revealed just when you need them,” and by reading them with intention, she helps her clients explore self-reflective questions about her interpretations. She encourages us to open ourselves up to our intuitive and spiritual side. “This dimension,” Owl's Daughter explains, “has been ignored, at our peril.” Numerology What's in a name? Well, according to numerologist and Kabbalist, Jeff Pinto; Everything! According to Pinto, when we come into this world, we are the ones who have chosen the day we were born, who are our parents and what we are named. Using numerology, a “sister science” to astrology, one can use your date of birth and your full name to learn a deeper understanding about your personality and your inclinations. By transposing letters with numbers and then consulting numerology charts for data, Pinto claims that he can help uncover answers to his client's questions and offer confirmation about revelations that they've already experienced. The mystical power and energy of numbers is so significant, that Pinto feels that a numerologist should be consulted before anything gets named, including babies, boats and businesses.

According to Pinto, when you change your name, or even modify the spelling, you also affect the “vibrations and energy” that the name carries, which can alter the karmic path. Nicknames, married names, even pet's names, are not to be taken lightly. A name can manipulate one's psyche, much like when an actor changes his persona as he takes on the name and identity of a character that he is playing. Spiritual Medium Often referred to by layman interchangeably, there is a big difference between a psychic and a medium. Psychics can read auras and energy fields around people, while mediums claim to communicate with spirits who have survived death. Deborah Foulkes, is a certified medium and a Reverend in the Spiritual Church. She has written five books on spirit and teaches classes locally at Dancing Moon, and around the country, on mediumship and spirit communication.

Page 6

Foulkes meets regularly with clients who want to interact with spirits from beyond; friends and family members who may have passed, or perhaps a spirit that has taken up residence in their home. During a reading with Foulkes, she may be able to summon a spirit who can reveal to you secrets of the past or perhaps aid in expectations for the future. “These spirits,” she says, “come in love, and not to terrorize you.” However, she does note, that much like people of the here and now - spirits of the afterlife have free will to come and go as they please, and do not always cooperate on demand. “We do not come here alone,” Foulkes explains. As a skilled and certified past life regression medium, she can also help guide her clients to explore their previous life experiences and visit with their personal spirit guides. These spirit guides are our ancestors from beyond who “help us get back on track when we've come to a crossroads or have fallen of our path along the way.” TS

USEFUL TIPS WHEN CREATING YOUR HOME'S GUEST ROOM

GET YOUR

GUEST ROOM READY Written By Paula Fullerton, Sew Fine II

Once summer is behind us, our thoughts turn to the holidays. And one of the most important aspects of the holidays is spending time with family and friends. The holidays are the time of year we open our homes to guests, but don’t let that put any extra pressure on you! You, and your guests, can be comfortable and relaxed with just a bit of advance planning.

Above: A recent Bedroom redesign by Sew Fine II. Right: U ermost lamp - perfect for bedside table. Below: Brahms Mount Tex les Herringbone & Chevron Throw Collec on in Natural or Natural/White or White/Cornflower Blue. Available at Opulence Of Southern Pines.

Our guests often spend a night…or more…in our homes with us during the holiday season. We want to enjoy each other’s company, but at the end of the day it is important to have private spaces. If you have an extra room, convert it to a guest room. Sleeping accommodations are best if there is a bed that is at least a “queen size”. Check the pillows before the guests arrive. Are they still “fresh” and firm? If not, replacing them is inexpensive and will help with a good night’s sleep. Layer blankets and coverlets so your guests can sleep with the warmth (or coolness) that makes them most comfortable. While fluffy duvets in pretty duvet covers look great in photos, they are usually too heavy to sleep under and too cumbersome to store while sleeping. If you are making a guest room from a room without a bed, consider an inflatable mattress in a queen size. These are also available on frames so your guest isn’t camping out” on the floor. When not in use, these air mattresses store compactly in a closet. Another consideration for a guest room is complete privacy on the windows. The windows should have shades or draperies that can be open during the day, and close the room off to the outdoors when sleeping or dressing.

This can be accomplished by layering your window treatments. A shade that lowers when privacy is needed can be used with drapery panels or valances at a window. And in a pinch, visit your local hardware store for temporary, paper shades. These attach to the window frame with an adhesive strip and come in both light filtering and room darkening versions. If space permits, add a chair to the guest room. This will give your guest a quiet space to read or work on their laptop. Other items to add to make your guest feel most welcome is a good reading light, enough room in the Sam Moore An go Transi onal closet for their clothExposed Wood Barrel Back Chair ing, and an alarm at Riverview Galleries, Durham clock. Finally, add a basket of items your guest may have forgotten to pack: a small tube of toothpaste, personal sized toiletries, and snacks for a late night treat.

MARKET TO MARKET A SNEAK PEEK AT THE 2014 TRENDS

Just returned from a busy buying trip at the America's Mart in Atlanta. I was ordering clothes for Spring 2014. People may not realize that we buy our inventory so far in advance so it's exciting to see the trends before they actually hit. I was helping the owner of our new Columbus, GA franchise on this trip. It's always exciting to help a new store build their inventory. The trends for Spring 2014 are full of color! Maxi dresses are still very much "in" as well as lots of great prints. It was lots of fun seeing a few of the other Scout & Molly's store owners at market as well as the designers from our Sylvia Benson Jewelry Line. All in all a successful trip and Scout & Molly's will be full and ready for Spring 2014! —Lisa Kornstein, Scout and Molly’s of Raleigh Our spring 2014 buying trip at the Atlanta Shoe Market was a great success. We stayed busy checking out new styles and colors from our favorite vendors such as Dansko, Naot and Olukai, as well as making time to search for fresh new lines to add to our store. The talk of the show was the release of a new sandal collection from TOMS for 2014. In the kids corner of the show the buzz was about Livie and Luca's bright new colors and See Kai Run's updated canvas collection. We are very excited for the upcoming spring season and can't wait show all of our customers what we have to offer.

— Clifton Mobley, Mobley Shoes We had such a great time at market, we met with one of favorite designers, Jude Connally. Her style is effortless. A woman can simply slip into one of her dresses, add shoes and go. They are ageless and her patterns and styles are so classic and fun they move from season to season effortlessly. —Nancy McKaig, Smitten Boutique

We have lots of great new stuff from market!! We have Kate Spade agendas, baby gifts, cute watches, the south dishes, bling bra straps, new frames, freakers and collegiate chevron croakies!! Come check out all of new goodies!!

women's apparel, activewear, casual daywear, career, denim, accessories, and more!

Just got back from the Atlanta Shoe Market buying for Spring/Summer 2014. The upcoming trends for shoes were black/white combinations, as well as pure white (we haven't seen this in many seasons), colorblock seems to still be important as well. The colors that were shown a lot were cobalt blue, mint green, yellow and orange. We will see sandals with studs and beads continue to be a strong trend as well as fun colored wedge espadrilles. It appeared that many designers have brought heel heights down, because they have been getting a lot of feedback regarding this.

doing good in the triangle COUTURE FASHION BENEFITS NONPROFIT Dress Luxe Teams with ma Cares Supporting NC Charities Triangle trendsetters usually must travel to snag Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Balenciaga, Stella McCartney or Prada purchases. But the fashion forward can now find these items here in the City of Oaks – and support a nonprofit while looking fabulous. Dress, a Raleigh boutique offering new and resale designer fashion, presents the Dress Luxe line of couture from such high end labels. Most pieces still feature the original tags, but are offered at a fraction of retail. More importantly: the boutique partners with ma Cares, a Greensboro-based nonprofit that celebrates and improves the quality of life for children, families, veterans and animals. And a portion of all Dress Luxe proceeds go directly to the ma Cares mission. “We selected this organization because they do so much to support causes that are on our minds and those of our clientele – particularly the women’s issues,” said Dress owner Pam Mullaney. She is thrilled to offer big name designers in the Triangle, channeling what might otherwise be an online purchase into a benefit for the important work ma Cares does in our own backyards. This is not a one time initiative, it is continuous, with a dedicated marketing and branding program in place. “So many of our customers support this effort, so we want to grow it” said Mullaney. On September 26th, there will be an open house at dress and a fashion show in Greensboro in October will benefit earlier.org, one of ma Cares chosen charities. Separately, dress supports earlier.org, a Greensboro based charity which is the nation’s only organization solely devoted to an earlier breast cancer test. ask anna Hi Anna, What is the difference between BB and CC creams? – Rachel • BB CREAM BB cream “Beauty Balm,” first hit the Asian market a few years ago and due to the popularity it has since made its way to the US and beyond! A new favorite by makeup artists and beauty gurus, BB typically provides SPF protection and antioxidants to the skin. There are several different versions on the market all of which contain their own unique concoction of skin beneficial ingredients. BB creams vary in coverage depending on the brand but are generally lighter than CC creams. • CC CREAM CC Cream “complexion corrector” has a more of a whipped, light, fluffy feel and finish-kind as compared to BB Creams. They typically do not have the variety of skin care ingredients found in BB Cream as the intent of CC creams is more to cover and conceal skin imperfections. Overall, the main- yet subtle- difference between the two creams is their amount of coverage. The prices, shade variety and SPF value of each is practically equal. So if you’re looking to cover acne scars, dark marks, redness or existing blemishes, choose a CC cream. If your main concern is simply using a product easier to apply than foundation that will also provide benefits and a bit of coverage, stick with a BB cream instead. Anna Porrazzo owns Synergy Spa & Aesthetics in Raleigh and teaches corrective makeup and innovative skin care to dermatologists, plastic surgeons, estheticians and spa owners worldwide. aging gracefully Written By Lou Scott

When my youngest daughter was five, she said she was going to live at home forever. When she was ten, she said she was going to live in the same town. And when she was a teenager she said she would always live in the same zip code. I knew what was coming next and I embraced it. When she went away to college, it wasn’t so bad; she was only an hour and a half away. Yet when that bittersweet day came, I cried most of the way home. I was proud of her, proud of my mothering in helping get her there, but I felt more than a whisper of nostalgia as I opened the door to her bedroom. A room I had always tried not to notice -- graffiti on the walls, the ceiling painted black -took on a whole new meaning. But my daughter was a bouncy, reliable, happy sort of person, and I knew her promises of lots and lots of visits home were promises she would keep. And keep them she did. There were Scrabble games, long brisk walks, milk shakes at Friendly’s and plans for her future. There were drives and bus trips up to see her, just to take her out to breakfast before I turned around and headed back home again. These I considered little jewels in time. And my husband felt the same way. Even so, I busied myself with my own new life. Keeping busy, the experts advised, was important whenever there is a sense of loss. It was advice I followed. I went back to college, made new friends and fell in love with my Pilates class and a daily morning swim. Nonetheless there were times I just looked out the window and missed her. When she told me her much-loved boyfriend had finished his degree, was having a hard time finding a job in his field instate, I went into a real slump. I knew what would be coming next. And when it did come, my daughter was torn; she didn’t want to go, but she didn’t want to lose him either. 76 | triangle style

So I helped her get ready to move, the two of us hauling furniture from her apartment into the hall, down the elevator and up the ramp into the U-haul truck. We laughed a lot and after the truck was loaded, we had a picnic lunch on the roof of her building. Even so, I had an empty, sick at my stomach feeling on my way back home. In spite of what she sincerely meant, I knew she wouldn’t be moving back. She would look for a good job, marry, and buy a house. It was what people did when they wanted to have a good life. But I couldn’t help but wonder what happened to those days when most people expected to live in the same town for generations, just as their grandparents had done? I was hurt, angry even, that it wasn’t expected anymore. She was my last child. She should have stayed close by. Irrational perhaps, as I had married and moved to another state when I was first married. Irrational or not, those were my feelings. At the same time, I felt embarrassed for having them. So I focused instead on keeping a long distance relationship the best it could be. We emailed, talked on the phone, and when Skype became available, we did that as well. When I visited for the first time, my daughter met me at the airport with flowers and a big welcome sign. Once in the car, she took out her list of all sorts of fun things we could do. The visit was an absolute delight and there were many more. One for her wedding, others just because and the very special one, the day she met me at the airport, pushing her newborn baby in a carriage, I was glad I had adapted; it all seemed so worthwhile.

Gaslight 1944

October Sky

Starring Ingrid Bergman, Charles Boyer and Joseph Cotten, this psychological thriller is about an unsolved murder that took place in London when Paula was just a little girl. The murdered woman, a great beauty and a renowned soprano, was Paula’s aunt. And though Paula was asleep upstairs at the time of the murder, she saw something in the shadows, something that still haunts her sleep more than ten years later. Living in Italy now and studying music, Paula falls in love with the charming man who accompanies her on the piano. After knowing him for no more than two weeks, she marries him. He tells her he has always wanted a townhouse in London, convincing her they should move to the house Paula inherited there, the house in which she never stepped a foot since the day her aunt was murdered inside.

A warmhearted and engaging film, it is based on a true story about Homer Hickam who, in 1957, lives in a coal town in West Virginia, a place where the idea of going to college is out of bounds. Like his father, he is instead expected to work in the mines. But when Homer looks into the sky and sees the Russian Sputnik orbit the earth, he realizes how close a life outside the coal town can be, if only he can find a way to get there. With a photo of the Rocket Scientist Wernher von Braun as his inspiration, Homer talks four boys into helping him build a rocket so he can enter and win the National Science Fair, and along with it, a scholarship to college. Not a single one of these young boys, including Homer, has any idea what materials they need, where and how to get them, let alone how to put a rocket together and make it fly.

Call the Midwife While you are waiting for the next season of Downton Abbey to begin, you might enjoy this top-rated PBS series based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, a midwife who lived in London’s East End during the 1950s. Nonnatus House, the nurses residence run by Anglican nuns, is where Jenny and the other young midwives live. Startled into reality from the home visits to the impoverished women, of all sorts and backgrounds, under their care, Jenny and the other midwives become emotionally involved, as do we, with the women, their stories, and the environment in which they live. Interesting characters, presented with humor, pathos, and clothed in intelligent writing, each segment stands on its own as well as in tandem with the others.

Monsters University Even monsters want a higher education. In this delightful animated film, a young monster applies to Monsters University so he can learn how to properly scare people. He finds learning how to scream with real gusto is not all that easy. Nor is the school the fun place he thought it would be. Other monsters make fun of him, the monster curriculum and tests are difficult and the monster final is just about impossible. But with the help of a mentor, a first-rate but lazy monster, he works on his scream technique. Then he talks other monsters who have also had trouble making the grade into creating their own monster team for the school’s grand finale. Though the outcome is predicable, it is clothed in a thoroughly charming chorus of screams.
