TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF I grew up in Manchester, England. My mum tells me that when I was 6 years old, I told her I wanted to live in America….and here I am! At around the same age, I was given an old cine video camera for Christmas; I wanted to be a film director (as the owner of a multifaceted business my most important role now is to ‘direct’ all the different elements towards success, so I sort of did become a director!). England is a bit different to America, you can leave school and go to work at 16. Even though my teachers told me I was very bright, I never felt an academic connection so I chose to leave school and go into the world of work at 16. I am a passionate Manchester United fan, I’ve been married for ten years to Lina (also a hairdresser) and we have twin 4 year old boys, Marco and Nico. WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO GET INVOLVED IN THE WORLD OF HAIR? When I was growing up, I was constantly recreating my image. Music and fashion were my two biggest inspirations. I spent every day of my teenage years reading the top fashion magazines of the time (of which there were very few) and getting into all the new trends and I spent every night in clubs listening to Punk and New Wave music that was coming out of influential Manchester bands at the time, like Joy Division.

My elder brother was a well-known colorist at the time and that introduced me to the world of hair. At 16, my thought was that working in a hair salon gives you a connection to the fashion industry and the chance to listen to music all day! It also meant lots of socializing, which I loved. I needed some money in my pocket to enjoy those teenage years so I felt that working in a salon would be perfect. I loved my new job straight away. There was a hip young staff, music playing all day, friendly clients, lots of energy, and parties every weekend. I realized pretty quickly that I wanted hairdressing to be my career. I also realized that if I was going to do this for the rest of my life, I wanted to be great at it. That was the beginning of my journey; soon after I obtained an apprenticeship at Vidal Sassoon, the best salon in Manchester, and my career took off from there.

YOU RECENTLY VISITED PLUM HAIR ATELIER IN RALEIGH. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT HOW YOU ARE INVOLVED WITH PLUM AND WHAT TYPE OF TRAINING AND SUPPORT YOU OFFERED WHILE YOU WERE HERE? After meeting owners Ashley Collins and Erin Shebaugh, we immediately made a connection and have like-minded feelings on how to run a successful hair salon. I introduced them to my product line and they were equally as impressed, so they decided to become an ARROJO Ambassador Salon, which means they carry our products, and embrace the education and culture that has made the ARROJO NYC salon such a success. So the PLUM team are now learning and practicing ARROJO techniques, including the
THE
razor-cutting techniques that I have invented. The straightedge blade creates a tapered outline, which gives styles a contemporary, chic aesthetic. We also use razoring to take out weight and texturize, for those fashionable, perfectly imperfect looks. I came to PLUM to facilitate a morning product usage and styling class and an afternoon meet and greet with clients and local dignitaries. The morning class was about showing the stylists at PLUM how we like to use our products for a range of creative effects, while also highlighting some of the key styling trends in NYC right now. The afternoon was all about giving people free consultations and signing autographs and taking pictures –– so PLUM’S clients can see the face behind the brand that they have chosen to work with.

BEING IN THE SOUTH, THE HUMIDITY IS KILLER! WHAT ADVICE AND PRODUCTS CAN YOU SHARE WITH US ABOUT TAMING THIS FRIZZ!?! The first thing with frizz is to understand why it is happening. It happens because the hair is dry; when the hair is dry and it is humid outside, your hair can feel all the extra moisture in the air and it (really!) expands and goes frizzy to literally try to reach out and take in that moisture. If we know that, we know that if we put more moisture in our hair in the first place, it won’t be so prone to frizzing. For anyone who is prone to frizz and/or has some natural wave or curl in their hair, I recommend our brand new Curl Hydration Shampoo and Conditioner. The products are sulfate and paraben free (ingredients that can dry hair out with over-use) and use ingredients like White Truffle Extract and Mirabelle Plum Oil to be rich and moisturizing. For styling, use frizz control if you want to wear your hair with natural texture, while shine luxe oil is great for straightening hair with no frizz. For any client of mine that is prone to frizz, I also like to finish with a light mist of healing oil. A glamorous glossing spray filled with precious oils, it gives sultry shine while calming frizz. Get all these products at PLUM! BEING A PART OF THE HIT TELEVISION SERIES "WHAT NOT TO WEAR", DID YOU LEARN ANYTHING ALONG THE WAY, WHETHER IT BE FASHION OR HAIR EXPERIENCES THAT SURPRISED YOU? I think what I learned most was about the psychology of the haircut. I met so many people who literally had not cut their hair for years and getting any kind of haircut was, for them, incredibly scary. Their hair had become part of their identity and changing it was a big deal. In New York, clients tend to be fashion forward and interested in new trends, so they change their hair (and identity) often. It was very insightful to see the other side of this coin, where a hair cut can be a once-in-a-lifetime, life-changing experience. I always say that a great hairdresser is always a great communicator because the most important part of the hair cut is the consultation –– that’s when a client decides whether they like you and your ideas for their hair. So being great at communication is critical, if you want to sell clients on your ideas for their hair.

Being on the show, I was able to watch each consultation back on tape and learn from my chair side manner. Now I feel I am an even better communicator and can more easily spot when a client is nervous about change. CAN YOU GIVE US YOUR "HAIR BACKGROUND" AND THE CHALLENGES YOU FACED BUILDING YOUR BRAND? I built my brand off of $25,000 of my own money. I have no investors, I own ARROJO 100%. Remaining completely independent with no outside investment has been an incredible challenge, especially doing it in NYC, where everything is expensive. I am very proud of overcoming this challenge to build the biggest independent hairdressing brand in America. ANY FAVORITE NEW HAIRSTYLES, FAVORITE CLASSIC CUTS? My favorite classic cut is a graduated bob. For hairdressers, this cut is the ultimate skill-test, the hardest technical haircut to execute, so it is a great way for me to tell if a young/new stylist is ready to make the grade. Aesthetically, there are many reasons to love the shape of a bob with graduation. The gradu-
ation through the back helps hair to appear elevated, giving the impression of volume and fullness; and because this classic and beautifying style is chin length, it creates the perfect frame for features like cheekbones, chin, lips and eyes––making it the kind of cut that is beautifying on anyone. WHAT IS COMING UP FOR YOU THIS YEAR? I have two huge events on the calendar. The first is ARROJO Expo, September 28-29 in NYC. Expo is a celebration of independent hairdressing, craft, creativity, and sharing good times with friends. We usually have about 400-500 attendees and we put on big presentations and a big party on one day and then on the second day, attendees can take a selection of hands-on classes with my master team. The other is Goldwell Color Zoom Berlin. Goldwell is our professional color partner and we have been invited to produce the main presentation for their yearly congress, which brings together thousands of Goldwell professionals from all over the world. It takes place in November and I am taking a big team from NYC; we are all very excited!

If you have a special event coming up like a reunion, wedding, or special party,
Dr. Margaret B. Boyse of Southern Dermatology recommends the following to prepare your skin and your body so you can feel your best on the big day!
TIME LINE 34 | triangle style
6 MONTHS PRIOR TO THE EVENT • FRAXEL (skin renewal) Fraxel is a powerful laser technology that can have a major impact on your skin’s radiance on your big day. It is non-invasive and clinically proven to soften lines and minimize wrinkles, scarring, pigmentation, and sun damage. If you do choose Fraxel as one of your pre-event beauty treatments, it’s best to schedule your appointment 6 months prior to the event, to leave time adjustments and healing.
Timelinecheet_Layout 1 8/24/14 12:08 PM Page 2
3 MONTHS PRIOR TO THE EVENT • CoolSculpting (fat reduction) If you have a persistent belly bulge that you can’t get rid of, CoolSculpting® could help. CoolSculpting® is a non-invasive, no-downtime treatment that reduces fat bulges by 20-25%. It can take up to 3 months to take effect, so book your appointment in time to look your best for your event. 6 WEEKS PRIOR TO THE EVENT • Latisse and Lumiere (focus on eyes) If you long for lush, long lashes on your big day, Latisse is an FDA-approved topical solution that makes your eyelashes longer and thicker. Latisse takes around 6 weeks to start noticing lashes that are long and feathery, so it’s good to plan ahead. Lumiere Bio-Restorative Eye Cream works to reduce the appearance of dark circles and puffiness. Fragrance and colorant-free, Lumiere is ultra-gentle for the delicate eye area, leaving the skin around the eyes softer, stronger and younger looking. 1 MONTH PRIOR TO THE EVENT • Fillers - Juvederm XC™, Restylane® and Radiesse® (cheeks/lips/under eye)
BEAUTY BAR • LUXURY COLOR PERSONALIZED STYLE
If you feel like you look tired, even when you’re not, fillers may be a good pre-event treatment. Fillers can be used to reduce lines and wrinkles and can also be used to plump and define lips and fill hollow areas on the face. Restylane, Juvederm have the best safety profile of all the fillers currently on the market and are FDA approved. The new Juvederm Voluma offers an instantaneous and longer-lasting solution than many of its predecessors. Give yourself a month-long adjustment period in case you need to get re-injected and/or for swelling and bruising to go away. 3 WEEKS PRIOR TO THE EVENT • Botox® (cheeks/lips/under eye) If you’re concerned about the frown creases or crow’s feet on your face, BOTOX® Cosmetic works beneath the skin's surface and targets the underlying muscle activity that causes these lines to form over time.

Botox is also approved for severe underarm sweating, and can used for nervous brides or grooms who don’t want to break a sweat on their big day. It’s best to get Botox 3 weeks before your event to allow resolution of any bruising and leave time for touch ups. It takes between three days and up to two weeks for it to kick in. 2 WEEKS PRIOR TO THE EVENT • chemical peel (cheeks/lips/under eye) VI Peels create an extraordinarily fresh look by stimulating the growth of healthy skin cells and collagen production, leaving skin radiant, smooth, and eventoned. It is best to plan ahead for the VI Peel procedure because of the peeling process, which takes a few days. 1 WEEK PRIOR TO THE EVENT • microdermabrasion Microdermabrasion is one of the simplest, most effective ways to keep your arms and legs irresistibly soft while giving a healthy glow. Microdermabrasion involves spraying tiny crystals on the skin to blast away dead skin, reduce fine lines, brown spots, mild acne scars and age spots. Microdermabrasion also improves the performance and longevity of self-tanner by decreasing the appearance of lines, pores and scarring so your tan can last longer, so it’s a perfect treatment to have close to your event day.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT ADORE – WHAT MAKES YOUR BOUTIQUES DIFFERENT? We have two brick and mortar resale shops in the Triangle that sell ladies’ clothing, jewelry and accessories and we also sell online. While we started and opened as primarily a go-to for high-end designer items (because of my lifelong love of fashion and upbringing and work), we have grown to include a lot of mid-range labels as well because there is a great market for them. We also carry new overstocks and jewelry and are able to sell them at a much lower price point than regular retail due to our connections with suppliers. Not all boutiques are created equal and ADORE is undoubtedly the “poster child” for this phrase! With dozens of designers from Hermes to St. John represented, ADORE literally, has something for every one. But what makes this boutique so unique are all of the extras that they offer. House calls and parties are just a few of the twists that gives ADORE a leg up in the consignment industry. We had the chance to speak with the owner of ADORE, Nancy Alinovi, about her take on combining fashion, food, friendship and fun to make this boutique a shopping success.
MORE THAN A BOUTIQUE!

WHY DO YOU THINK YOU HAVE SUCH LOYAL CUSTOMERS AND CONSIGNORS? I think people know that we honestly want what is best for them. We really work with our customers and consignors to make them happy. We do not want a customer to buy anything ill-fitting or not flattering and we are known for being honest. I tell the ADORE team; I would rather lose a sale than having someone not 100% pleased with their purchase. This is why we have so many repeat customers that, over the years, have become friends and familiar faces. With regard to our consignors, we know that getting them the most money we can for their pre-loved items benefits everyone. We split 50/50 with consignors and on purses and accessories $500 and up they get a higher cut. A Chanel bag gets the consignor even more. This assures our customers that we will continue to get great merchandise while putting the most money we can in the pockets of our neighbors. We love to support our local economy! We are also a little bit like a family… Store managers Mary Lou Krol and Allison Spencer have been employees and friends since before the first ADORE door opened. Also my daughter, Kristen and Mary Lou’s daughter Taylor work for us when they are not in college. We value our employees and even those that have gone on to full time jobs or other sectors stay friends and keep us updated.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR "AFTER HOURS PARTIES". Ever since we opened over five years ago, we have offered after hours shopping parties. We find that some customers and friends just love to get together, have a few drinks, a bite to eat, and to shop; they love a different venue than the usual. We have heard “who needs book club?” more than once. We will provide drinks and snacks and will open privately in the evening for groups of 6 or more. For groups of 12 or more, we suggest booking with our Raleigh store as it is much bigger and there is also an area to lounge. Some of our private shopping parties get quite loud and everyone seems to laugh and have fun. Don’t worry, what happens at ADORE, stays at ADORE!

DO YOU HELP NOT ONLY WITH OFFERING HIGHER END BRANDS, BUT ALSO WITH STYLING? We carry many high-end brands such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton, St. John, the occasional Hermes and many au currant designers; however we also carry less expensive things. When styling we do like to mix it up. Not everything you have on has to be one price point. We are more concerned with body type and how to dress and accentuate a customer’s particular shape to show it off to its advantage. Many of our customers have their favorite salesperson to help them, but some do schedule appointments with me for them to help them- usually when they are dressing for an event or trip.
PLEASE GIVE US A RUN-DOWN OF WHAT INVOLVES HOUSE AND/OR ESTATE CALLS. Since our inception, we have also always offered house calls for those unable to come to us or those needing help with editing their closets and/or styling. Appointments are scheduled with the ADORE team based on individual need. We are also called in frequently with regard to estates. We know how much fashion can mean to someone in their life and we have great respect and empathy for family and friends representing loved ones. We will do what is best for the situation at hand, whether it be a quick and easy onetime buy out or setting up the inventory on a consignment basis. Some of our most wonderful things come from house calls. We have been called back because, again, our honesty is our selling point. If we think someone should keep something because it is fabulous and looks great on them, we tell them. We also suggest certain items be sold through venues other than our own to assure sellers can make the most money.
PLEASE INCLUDE ANY OTHER INFORMATION YOU WOULD LIKE FOR OUR READERS TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR BOUTIQUE We are extremely against the counterfeit trade and try and educate all that do not know that it is not a victimless crime. It is also illegal to allow a counterfeit to enter the market place and we guarantee all items sold at ADORE to be authentic. I also have a deep appreciation of the wonderful workmanship of vintage costume jewelry and designer clothing and will never pass up an appointment to see it, examine it or give my expert opinion whether it is sold by us or not. We just love to give advice when asked! 40 | triangle style

Beth that is an excellent question, yes there are several different procedures as well as homecare products that can treat deep wrinkles. Botox and other Neurotoxins provide immediate results, whereas other options will take longer to achieve visible improvement. Treatment options can include laser resurfacing (which may have associated downtime depending upon how aggressive you and your provider decide to go), chemical peels, or microneedling to name a few. Homecare should contain the use of Retinols, AHA’s such as Glycolic and Lactic acid as well as collagen stimulating ingredients like Topical Vitamin C. It is important to note that not all of these options may be suitable for you and therefore a skin evaluation by a licensed skin provider is necessary before moving forward with any specific regimen. Additional, just to give you a little history on Botox as it might make you feel more comfortable with the idea of having this procedure at some point in the future. Botox has been used medically since the early 60’s, when a purified botulinum toxin type A was discovered to relax the muscle temporarily even when used in very small doses. Ophthalmologist Dr. Scott received government approval to use human participants in his scientific work and his research revealed that botulinum toxin type A was a safe and effective treatment for crossed eyes. Other research showed botulinum toxin type A was helpful in relieving various kinds of muscle spasms from facial to vocal cord spasms. In 1989 a year after Allergen bought the distribution rights to the toxin—the FDA approved botulinum toxin type A for treating crossed eyes and spasms in the eye muscle. Allergen purchased Dr. Scott’s company and with additional research and development from Allergan, Botox as we now know it was born! On a final note, often time’s people think they need Botox when in actuality for their deeper wrinkles (from the cheek bone area down), Filler such as Juvederm (also from Allergan the makers of Botox) is indicated. Again, Filler for deeper wrinkles, creases and folds are generally required not Botox. And, you will probably appreciate the fact that Juvederm is made from a naturally occurring substance found in our bodies, Hyaluronic Acid. If you visit botoxcosmetics.com you can search for a local provider of both Botox and Juvederm, all of whom have received training from the Allergan, additional check online reviews and ask around for provider recommendations. Even if you choose not get Botox or Filler such as Juvederm, many of the places that perform these procedures will also be able to guide you to alternatives that work best for you. — Best of luck. TRIANGLE TRENDS Southern Girls Love Pearls - A Timeless Classic
Pearls can be the perfect fashion accessory for fall! Autumn brings darker colors and more layers, and adding a piece of bright pearl jewelry creates a contrast that can get you noticed. The luster brings out your natural skin tone while adding a bright finish to your outfit. • A chunky pearl bracelet creates an interesting statement that blends modern style with timeless elegance. For instance, a chunky pearl and sterling silver bracelet by Slane & Slane, adds dimension to any outfit. • A black pearl necklace can add color and a unique twist to your every-day style. The deep color from black pearls can be dressed down with dark-washed jeans, or dressed up with a solid colored dress. • A pair of classic 7 or 8 mm Mikimoto Akoya studs are a way to stay classic and cute. Volumize Your Youth with Dr. Boyse's product pick: JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ Filler!
Voluma is the latest and longest lasting injectable Hylauronic Acid filler to hit the market. It's the only one FDA approved as a cheek and midface filler. Best of all the results are immediate. Volume loss in what we call the "midface" is from a combination of fat and bone absorption, that increases slowly over time. The resulting decrease in cheek projection leads to sagging skin, jowls, under eye circles and an aged, hollow appearance. Voluma is a reversible filler that can replace the lost tissue, lifting the skin towards its original position for up to 2 years. Combining dermal fillers and botulinum toxins; and using a proper skincare regimen can make you appear both younger and healthier.

LORENA LUCA SIGNATURE MASSAGE
Kristy Stevenson
Did you know that the simple act of touch has the ability to pacify the mind and rejuvenate the body? If you feel the need to relax, renew and restore, Lorena Luca Spa and Skin Clinic (lorenaluca.com) has your prescription for luxurious full-body stress relief. From the moment I entered the soothing Cameron Village location, I felt enveloped in an opulent sanctuary with complete focus on my well-being. Far from the street noise below, I moved from the delicately scented lobby area to the meandering halls that are low lit and serene. There didn’t seem to be any square edges in this facility; the corridors flowed from one room to the next. In the locker room, I found a plush robe and slippers – all the comforts of home. Then I relaxed in the eucalyptus steam room and state of the art infra red sauna. There was also a relaxation lounge with refreshments so I could stay hydrated, all before I even met my masseuse. Knowledgeable and personable spa therapists like Maggi McCoy treated me to the ultimate in renewal and relaxation. She evaluated my needs and tailored the procedure to what made me the most comfortable. Clients may select from Deep Tissue Massage, Relaxation, Rock On, Pea in a Pod, Thai Reflexology, or the Lorena Luca Signature Massage that combines Swedish, hot stone and aroma sensory all in one. I chose the latter, and enjoyed a peaceful darkened room with a state-of-the-art massage table and soft music. My stress and muscle tightness just melted away with the fragrant oolong, earth and mandarin aromatherapy oils. The massage was amazing! Afterwards, more hydration to flush any released toxins from my body, and then a refreshing shower to finish up. Want to share this experience with a special someone? Try the Massage For Two, Couple’s Spa Suite Massage, or Couple’s Spa Suite Indulgence. They also offer enhancements such as Body Brushing, Hot Stone Treat, Reflexology, Paraffin Infusion (for the hands or feet), Head and Scalp Massage, and Aromatherapy.

SYNERGY SPA CUSTOMIZED MASSAGE EXPERIENCE - Deanna Lopes
As summer winds down, fall can be a busy, and sometimes stressful time of new beginnings and, dare I say, planning for the upcoming holidays! I recently took a much needed break from the end-of-season rush with a customized massage at Synergy Spa & Aesthetics. With their excellent service and serene atmosphere, Synergy always hits the reset button! I love how every Synergy experience begins in the waiting lounge, where you can sip hot tea, sit back in a comfortable chair and prepared yourself for total relaxation. I waited there for a few minutes before my therapist, Dan, brought me into a massage room and asked me a series of questions to help him create the best customized experience. First, I chose my desired pressure, which ranged from light to deep tissue. He also wanted to know what areas, if any, I would like him to focus on. Like so many others, I hold tension in my neck and shoulders from hours in front of a screen, and from stress in general. On top of that, running on pavement is not very kind to my feet and calves. Needless to say, I was glad to have the opportunity ease to these problem areas. I settled onto the heated table, face-down, and inhaled the calming aroma of lavender oil placed just below. Dan began the massage, and I felt my stress melt away as he focused on one area at a time. He made sure I was always comfortable by asking me to adjust his pressure, or the heated table, if needed. They really think of everything! When my feet and legs were being massaged, heated neck, back and eye pillows ensured that my entire body was relaxed at all times. One of my favorite parts of the whole experience was the heated stone therapy. Smooth, warm stones, adjusted to my desired temperature, were placed on my back and neck to relieve tension. It was a wonderful addition to an already superior massage. Afterwards, I went about my day feeling just as relaxed as if I had taken a mini-vacation! Synergy Spa will deliver the relaxing break you need during the stressful months ahead. Find out more about Synergy’s body therapy services at www.feelsynergy.com. 58 | triangle style

A Few Tips To Remember... TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE AMENITIES: Find out if your spa has a steam room or sauna. If so, arrive early and enjoy a little extra pampering; the steam room and sauna will certainly help you feel relaxed even before your massage begins. LEAVE YOURSELF PLENTY OF TIME: It's always a good idea to arrive for any spa treatment at least 15-20 minutes beforehand, so you can leave enough time to change. BE GENEROUS: Most therapists receive 15-20% gratuity. If someone gave you a gift certificate, be sure to ask the person at the check-in desk if the tip is included. CHATTY KATHYS: Always turn off your cell phone or, at the very least, turn it to vibrate. If you want to remain quiet or even feel a bit conversational, it's okay; your therapist wants you to feel comfortable. DON’T BE SHY: If you feel uneasy with anything, say so. Your therapist really does want to know if the music in the background, the temperature in the room, or the intensity of the massage is too much for you.

UP CLOSE & PERSONAL alking into GreenPea Baby & Child for the first time last summer, my eyes sparkled in awe. The store was unlike anything I had ever seen; vignettes of lovingly-displayed, dream nurseries were throughout the store and attention was paid to every detail. I was immediately impressed, of course, and that didn’t change when I was hired or even now as it’s my one year anniversary of having the privilege of working there. You may be surprised to find out that the displays aren’t just beautiful, they are handpicked from thousands of products on the market and have a function far greater than simply “looking good”.
Krista Cathey GreenPea Baby & Child is the vision of owner Krista Cathey, who is described by her staff as being nothing less than “Wonder Woman”. Krista, a North Carolina native, moved to Raleigh in 2006. With a background in retail and the desire to open a store one day, the move provided the opportunity to try something new. She wanted to create a store that embraced happiness, and the time surrounding having a baby is often one of the happiest and most memorable! She wanted to provide parents with a store that she envisioned when she was pregnant; a store where she could get to know the staff, find quality products, healthier options and purchase fun and unique items as well. By following that model, two years later, in 2008, Krista launched a website, followed by the opening of a brick-and-mortar store in 2009. GreenPea enjoyed a cozy spot in downtown Apex for four years where they were able to get to know the customers personally, build a strong customer base, and fine-tune the store according to local demand. In May of 2013, the store relocated to the newlyrenovated Waverly Place near WakeMed Cary Hospital. Orders are shipped out nationally every day, and the growth of the online and local community has blossomed. The larger space that GreenPea now occupies at Waverly Place allows for an expanded selection of clothing, (NB-4) for boys and girls as well as space for more furniture lines from cribs, gliders and changing tables to youth furniture. The walls Written By LeAnn Hirt, Marketing, GreenPea Baby & Child
GreenPeaNursery_Layout 1 8/24/14 3:34 PM Page 2
display the beautiful artwork of an on-staff artist, custom birth announcements, and portraits by local photographers. Customers love the “anti-cookie cutter” nursery idea; the fact that items such as bedding, window treatments and artwork can be completely custom. The furniture lines chosen by Krista are hand-picked from among the masses on the market because of their health and safety standards, quality, and sustainability practices. “We don’t have 100,000 square feet to fill, but 5,000 square feet, so the products that we choose have to be the best. Every product in our store is there for a reason,” Krista explains. Customers who are shopping for gliders, whether for their nursery or for their living room, love the fact that the gliders carried at GreenPea are made in the USA; two of the lines are made in North Carolina. Supporting local is a proud practice of GreenPea, and they are hopeful that the community will follow suit. Although GreenPea has access to all of the products on the market, the large space dedicated to “gear” such as strollers, high chairs and car seats accessories, is one where they didn’t skimp on research. Parents will often unquestioningly purchase items that are carried prominently in a “big box” retailer or are suggested and highly rated in a baby guide, but the staff at GreenPea takes a more personalized approach, walking you through and suggesting items that will fit your lifestyle and budget. Krista’s vision didn’t end at a beautiful store full of the best products on the market. She is a huge advocate for customer education, so GreenPea offers a variety of classes and events throughout the year in-store. On-going classes and events include a weekly toddler story time, monthly Infant CPR and a monthly Registry Soiree. The Registry Soiree is geared towards expectant parents with the focus of making the registry process “Simplified”; avoiding the overwhelming experience many first-time
parents experience when attempting to register at a big box store. I remember being overwhelmed as a first-time parent, walking wide-eyed, clutching my baby guide book, feeling left to figure things out on my own. This is not the experience Krista wants any customer to have; and this is another reason customers return. Even though the store has grown since the Apex days, the amount of personal attention paid to customers has not. The GreenPea staff will create a personal display for registered customers to make it easier for their shower guests to shop. This is a feature that many customers appreciate, especially when shopping through aisles and aisles of baby products on a registry can be overwhelming. Customer Sarah explains, “I can walk into GreenPea and everybody knows my name, knows my child’s name and makes me feel so welcome. The amount of advice and support they gave me throughout the whole process was amazing, I feel like I’m shopping with friends!” GreenPea is known as the place to go in the Triangle for Nursery & Children’s furniture and bedding, after visiting for the first time parents soon realize that there is way more to this store. As Krista explains, “our goal is to really get to know our customers, their lives and how we can help. I am so blessed to have a staff that shares that passion. We are always here for our customers. If they have a question about a product, they know they can come by or give us a call and we are there for them.” This is what keeps customers coming back, through the first, second, and even third pregnancy. “Seeing our customers grow from wide-eyed scared expectant parents to expert parents of 2 and 3 is one of the most rewarding feelings,” says Krista. “To see the kids grow from when they were in their mommy’s belly to an energy-filled toddler is why we do this. Our customers are like family.”

WORKING WITH A
Once you have made the decision to work with a designer, there are several key decisions to be made. If you consider these steps first, you can look forward to an enjoyable experience in collaborating with a designer.

FIRST, DECIDE HOW MUCH SERVICE YOU WOULD LIKE FROM YOUR DESIGNER. Some homeowners simply want advice. They like to implement the ideas given to them by a designer and look for the products themselves. If this appeals to you, be sure to tell the designer you are interested in a consultation. Many designers will work with a homeowner on a consultant basis. Decide if you will want a “one time” meeting or a continuing series of consultations as you implement your room design. Other individuals want “full service” design. If this is more to your liking, communicate your style and needs to the designer and she will then develop a design plan and suggest the components to complete the plan to you. When you work with a designer in this capacity, you will have a series of meetings to select your furnishings and window coverings.
YOU SHOULD ALSO DECIDE ON A TIME FRAME for your project. Some projects can be completed quickly while renovations, additions or custom furniture can take a longer period of time. If you have a deadline to meet, such as a family event or holiday, this has to be expressed at the first meeting with your designer.
NEXT, DECIDE ON YOUR BUDGET. This is often the most difficult part of your design plan. A realistic budget will help the designer find the right products for your rooms. And you will also avoid disappointment that can occur if you are shown items not in your budget. Most budgets can be accommodated.
WORKING WITH A DESIGNER SHOULD BE A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE. If you invest some time in making the decisions about your expectations you will pave the way to a living space made beautiful in an enjoyable manner.
HOW YOU AND YOUR DESIGNER COMMUNICATE IS IMPORTANT. While face to face meetings will take place during the design process and the implementation of the design, there will be a great deal of communication that does not have to be in person. Are you an email person? Are you a text person? Or do you only do well with in-person meetings? Let your designer know this so that you are comfortable during the entire design process.

THE EXPERTS SPEAK
RENAISSANCE DENTAL CENTER
RELIEVING DENTAL ANXIETY IN KIDS (AND PARENTS TOO!)
KIDS AND DENTAL X-RAYS: WHY AND WHEN DENTAL X-RAYS ARE NECESSARY...
There is no standard timetable for when your child's mouth should be X-rayed. The need varies with the child's development and dental health. If your child has had many cavities and fillings or has a high risk of tooth decay, your dentist might suggest X-rays every six months. This may continue until the problem is under control. Whether X-rays are needed also depends on how well the child brushes and flosses, and the child's diet. Other children may not need X-rays taken as often. If X-rays aren't taken when they are needed, problems can become worse. Dental X-rays are very safe and expose your child to a minimal amount of radiation. When all standard safety precautions are taken, today's X-ray equipment is able to eliminate unnecessary radiation and allows the dentist to focus the X-ray beam on a specific part of the mouth. Digital X-rays have decreased exposure time by over 80% compared to traditional film. A lead body apron or shield should be used to protect the genital/reproductive area and the thyroid gland.
X-rays, also called radiographs, are a valuable diagnostic tool. X-rays help your dentist to:
• See how your child's teeth are erupting (coming into the mouth) • See the number, size and position of teeth that are still inside the gums • Find out whether there are missing teeth or extra teeth • Monitor mouth and teeth injuries • Determine whether the teeth or mouth are infected • Prepare for braces and other orthodontic treatment • Detect problems that can't be seen with a visual exam • Identify bone diseases
IV SEDATION:
A new studied conducted by the National Institute of Health studied children in dental environments and their response to stress. When orange oil was diffused in the air, almost 85% of these same children showed a significant reduction in stress and anxiety. For this reason, our office uses pure

essential orange and lavender oils in our treatment rooms to help calm patients prior to their appointment. Although we only offer IV sedation to patients 16 and older, when necessary, we do use nitrous on our pediatric patients.
SEALANTS
A sealant is a clear or shaded plastic material that is applied to the chewing surfaces (grooves) of the back teeth (premolars and molars), where four out of five cavities in children are found. This sealant acts as a barrier to food, plaque and acid, thus protecting the decay-prone areas of the teeth. Sealants have been proven benefit both primary and permanent teeth. We check sealants at each cleaning appointment and “touch up” any areas that might need resealing at no additional cost to you. Sealants are normally covered by your insurance provider, but can have age limitations. We are happy to look into your coverage options prior to placing sealants.
MAKE IT POSITIVE
You can make the first visit to the dentist enjoyable and positive. If old enough, your child should be informed of the visit and told that the dentist and their staff will explain all procedures and answer any questions. • (If possible) have your child join you when YOU get your teeth cleaned! They can ride with you in the hygiene chair, help look and count your teeth with a “tooth counter” and mirror, and even wear a mask and gloves to make it look official! • Bring your childs favorite stuffed animal, not only will this help during the visit, but we often find that checking the toy’s teeth first will make the experience much more fun and imaginative. • Prepare your child with open communication, read them books about the dentist, We love Dr. Seuss’s Tooth book!
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American Dental Association (ADA), and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) all recommend establishing a "Dental Home" for your child by one year of age. Children who have a dental home are more likely to receive appropriate preventive and routine oral health care. From regular dental check ups to education on the best way to take care of the pearly whites, we want to make your child smile!
TOOTHBRUSHING - Look for a toothpaste that is recommended by the American Dental Association (as shown on the box & tube.) They have undergone testing to insure they are safe to use. REMEMBER...children should spit out
toothpaste after brushing to avoid getting too much fluoride. If too much fluoride is ingested, a condition known as fluorosis can occur. If your child is too young or unable to spit out toothpaste, consider providing them with a fluoride free toothpaste, using no toothpaste, or using only a "pea size" amount of toothpaste.
EVERY DAY HYGIENE Good oral hygiene habits developed early in life can lead to a lifelong healthy smile.

EVER WONDER?
CLIENT TALK
WE ASKED TRIANGLE RESIDENT, LAURA GINGRICH WHAT SHE HAD DONE, AS WELL AS WHAT SHE THOUGHT OF THE SERVICE...
WHAT PROCEDURE DID YOU HAVE DONE? I had Botox done. WHAT WAS IT ABOUT THIS PARTICULAR PROCEDURE THAT WAS ATTRACTIVE TO YOU? For a long time I was considering Botox but I was on the fence about it. I know a few friends who had it done and they absolutely loved their results. And admittingly so, they do look so much more refreshed. So, I decided to give it a try. DID THE PROCEDURE LIVE UP TO YOUR EXPECTATIONS? It went beyond my expectations. My confidence level was higher and I looked more youthful. I am so glad I did it. I only wished I would have done it sooner. It did not hurt (as I thought it would) and did not take very long, in fact, the whole process was only about 15 minutes.
WOULD YOU DO IT AGAIN? Yes, I would and I plan on it. The procedure usually takes about 10 minutes and doesn't require any anesthesia, though some doctors may numb your forehead with a cold pack or cream, before injecting it several times with the BOTOX. Knowing your doctor's process will make you more comfortable. FOR SOMEONE CONSIDERING THIS PROCEDURE FOR THE FIRST TIME, CAN YOU SHARE ANY WORDS OF WISDOM? Finding a practitioner with experience and skill is crucial. And dont be afraid to ask questions, in fact, I asked Dr. Pleasant at The Wake Medical Heath Group (in Raleigh) so many questions and not once did he seemed annoyed, in fact, he made me feel very comfortable and was incredibly easy to talk to. His knowledge and his level of expertise made me feel much more confident with my decision to go forward with Botox. Plus I learned about many other uses for Botox that I did not know about, like Botox for eliminating neck lines, migraines and improving bladder troubles.

Those uncomfortable pauses can be opportunities, opportunities to pause and reflect. Making a list of what you have already done in your life (no one is looking over your shoulder), what has been enjoyable, or what you thought you might like to do someday can be a good place to start. When I made my list, a pretty clear pattern emerged. I enjoyed raising my children, loved a good long walk, and was always enthralled with literature, history, or learning anything new. I also enjoyed the company of both like-minded people as well as those people who made me look at life a little differently. So I decided to combine my desire to make new friends with my love of learning and joined a book group. However, just like the little girl in The Red Shoes, I couldn’t stop. What began as one group mushroomed into seven. At that point I looked at those books on my nightstand and dreaded picking them up; what began as fun, had become an obligation. No fun at all.

How did I get to this place? It began with a group that was perfect. We met at the same house every month, which relieved any stress over preparation, anything more elaborate than plain cookies was frowned upon, which left any penchants for competition discarded. We chose books by secret ballot, no dominant person reigned in our
Aging Gracefully fall14_healthy habits-winter 8/25/14 9:24 AM Page 2
choices, and we picked what to read for six months in advance, no spending half the meeting what to read next. And most important, without being rigid, our leader kept us focused.
Group? Reading was becoming a chore. I was experiencing burn out and something had to go. There were other things I wanted to do with my life. Staying in two groups a month was all I could comfortably manage.
Next, when I heard a book group entirely devoted to the study of Proust’s Remembrance of Things Past was underway, I signed up for it too. Although I had never finished Proust, I had found the book ponderous, it was nonetheless one of those classics, I wanted to finish. It was a multiyear undertaking. I was clearly out of my league; two of the members were reading it in French, but I stuck with it, because I found the group intriguing.
I started with the one I could do without, and then went down the line until no more than two groups were left. It not only opened up other areas in my life, but the process of elimination told me something about myself. I discovered my natural disposition needed time to not do much of anything. I wanted to have time for my grandchildren, make my home safer and more comfortable, go a movie or a play if I felt like it, or sit on my front porch or walk to the park and sit on a bench and watch the people go by. I had my sense of balance back!
Then came the Dickens book group, I had always loved Dickens, followed by the Russian literature group, and the generic book group at a local college. And did I mention the Barnes & Noble Sunday Reader’s

A Separation Winner of the 2012 Best Foreign Film award, this gripping courtroom drama and intimate portrait of a family in crisis begins with Simin’s petition for divorce. Although she cares for her husband, Nader, Simin wants to leave Iran and move to America, but Nader refuses to go with her. He tells the judge, “It’s up to her; she can stay or she can go but she can’t take our daughter.” Nader wants to stay behind in order to care for his father. Simin says, “His father doesn’t even know he is his son,” “But I know he is my father,” Nader answers. “What should I do?” Simin asks the judge. “Go back to your life,” he tells her. Instead, she moves in with her parents, and Nader hires a woman to help care for his father while he is at work. From there on in, everything changes.
Emma (PBS miniseries, featuring Romola Garai and Michael Gambon.) The story of course begins with Emma, an incredibly cheery and pretty young woman, who lives a privileged life in a grand house in the English countryside with her much-loved but overanxious father (he wears several scarves in summer for fear of contracting a cold). Even so, there’s not much for a spirited girl like Emma to do. Not much to do, that is, until she plays matchmaker for Harriet Smith, the natural child of father unknown. She must be a gentleman’s daughter, Emma inexplicably concludes. Consequently, when a prosperous and hardworking farmer proposes toHarriet, Emma encourages her to set her sights on a gentleman, in particular the vicar, Mr. Welton. Unfortunately for Harriet, Emma is not good at separating fact from romantic fiction. Thanks to the good-looking, sensible, and wealthy Mr. Knightley, however, Emma realizes how harmful her snobbery has been to others, including yawning when the kindly Miss Bates read the weekly letters of Miss Jane Fairfax to Emma and her father. And everyone lives happily ever after.
