OPPOSITES ATTRACT Sweet and sour. Hot and cold. Rich and light. Often times putting together two polar opposites can result in a wonderful combination! While this is true with food, it’s often even truer when it comes to fashion, and this season blending things that are seemingly opposites can create a look that is greater than the sum of its parts.

OUTFIT ONE

Pairing things that create an unexpected combination is a wonderful way to create a ‘new’ look – using items already in your closet, or bringing in a few new pieces to give old favorites a fresh spin. It’s also an easy way to put a contemporary twist on items you’ve had for years, saving you some serious wardrobe dollars so take note.

This quirky combination of bold red is tempered with a pale, pastel aqua that provides just the right backdrop, yet gives it a surprising twist. The bold red takes center stage and the aqua is a subtle, yet lovely counterpoint that gives it just the right amount of punch. The fact that the fabrications are opposites – floaty chiffon paired with a sensuous leather skirt – just adds interest and depth to this look that would be perfect for an evening out.

Take a gorgeous lace dress to new heights by teaming it with a bold motorcycle jacket in a similar hue. The feminine dress is given a playful look with the masculine style jacket. The monochromatic look is what really makes this work. Layering items in a similar shade with completely different textures is a wonderful way to create modern appeal, and the unexpected mix is downplayed with the subtle hue. A chic pair of boots or booties would complete this look. • Dress, by Dress • Jacket, by Dress • Jewelry, by Fab’rik

Who says sequins are just for dress up? At first glance this spicy sequin jacket might conjure thoughts of holiday soirees. But tame it with a simple tissue tee and you’ve given it a more understated appeal that is just as appropriate for a casual weekend gathering (teamed with jeans), or even for the office. The tissue tee downplays the dressiness of the jacket and helps make it more versatile. Wear this with a fabulous satin skirt to dress it up, or put it with a pair of dark wash jeans for an urban edge. • Jacket, by Fab’rik • Top, by Dress • Satin Skirt, by Dress • Necklace, by Fab’rik (Good Girls’ Studio)

One Shoulder Not quite strapless, but just enough shoulder to leave a little to the imagination. Think greek goddess meets Marilyn Monroe when selecting a one-shoulder gown. While the trend for years past have been longer, more flowing gowns, shorter dresses are more flattering with this style for 2013.

Sweetheart Tops Straight from the 80's, this popular heart shaped, strapless design was found at just about every party thrown! Back with a vengeance, the sweetheart top is the “it” style of the season. Great especially for the not so well endowed, this cut is classy while accentuating the body.

Luxury Color, Retouch & Glaze, Dimensional Color Highlights American Balayage

Details Ruffles, beading, braiding, you name it, it's all in the details. Jeweled collars and intricate accents take a simple sheath to the next level. Classic and timeless styles with that added embellishment catches the light and really makes you stand out (no matter how many dresses are at your next party!).

While black is still the hottest dress color on the runway – rich, bold hues in red, blues and purples are working their way into closets everywhere. From silk shift dresses to sleek satins, go for looks with lace accents and even sheer overlays. Color blocking is also still very popular. Everything from creams and blacks to pinks and purples, don't be afraid to mix it up a little!

Prints Yes! Animal prints are still in, but reptile is slowly taking over this kingdom! Chic prints – think indian inspired, exotic designs. A superb style for those “trouble spots”, prints can mask any hot spot and looks fabulous on all body types.

I wanted to wear this dress to a number of holiday dinner parties and festivities, layering it with a lavish faux fur coat and sexy boots. The best part about this dress is how it fits me like a glove. I found it easy to dress up with almost any shoe or coat in my closet. Finally, I settled on a pair of buttery soft leather overthe-knee boots. Instead of tights which can sometimes be a nuisance, these boots work – adding both style and warmth. I found the faux fur vest a fun addition to the dress. It’s an easy layering piece to play with the simple print. Unexpected at first glance, perhaps. Yet, it works its way in subtly. Whenever winter lands, it's at first hard for me to adjust. After months of t-shirts, shorts and pretty sandals, it's a little daunting to style in layers all over again. Especially as a woman who wants to still look feminine, pretty, and maybe even a little bit sexy. We need to find ways to keep style, comfort and warmth working for us long into the cold winter months. For this I say: try mysterious layers. A fitted dress like the one I'm wearing is a good foundation piece to start with. Just add a comfy coat, cardigan and cute bag. Faux furs are also your friend. So are leggings underneath your jeans. And don't forget the tallest of boots or funky tights with platform shoes. I am absolutely thrilled with my hair by Dustin Stamey of Modern Enhancement Salon Day Spa. He is one of the salon's master stylists. I requested beach wavy waves – something both effortless and glamorous from the days of old Hollywood. I then came in with some photos and he went to work. I learned some new techniques to try with my hair –if I ever dare to try my hand at recreating this hairstyle, that is. First curl your hair into small sections, adding in a light-hold hairspray as you work. End by gently brushing out the curls into soft, loose waves. Finish with a spritz of hairspray to hold the look for a few days. Thank you, Dustin!

WHY I LOVE THIS OUTFIT... When I initially spotted this dress (no pun intended) on the rack, I fell head over heels for the print. I find brown tones easy to mix and match. I also appreciate how the color complements my hair. My selection was part body conscious, part wrap-dress. Diane von Furstenberg would be proud of my choice!

The moment I pulled this capelet on, I knew I had to pair it with brown ankle booties and a wide brimmed floppy hat. The rest was easy thanks to a black miniskirt and semi-sheer tights. I felt warm but stylish. I wanted to wear this outfit to meet my friend for coffee and a few hours of fashion talk. It would also make a great look for any holiday party. One of the many challenges I find with colder weather is being able to keep my sense of style without having to hide my figure. Play with proportions; layers don't necessarily have to mean frumpy. Mix and match baggy pieces with tighter body conscious ones. Don’t limit yourself to fall colors like chocolate brown, hunter green, autumnal orange and mod black. Maybe try mixing in a pastel with bold black? Or purple with grey. Fashion is about experimentation! Above all, though, comfort is key. Make sure to check your final look in a full length mirror before stepping out. That way, you'll never have to question whether your shoes match your outfit.

WHY I LOVE THIS OUTFIT... This capelet is equal parts comfort and effortless chic. It’s the easiest piece to pull on over just about anything while still looking and feeling cool. Of course when working with a baggy piece, you should keep the rest of your look fitted. Try skinny jeans, leggings or a fitted velvet dress underneath.

It takes quite a bit of determination, a lot of talent, and a dash of drive to get up at 2:40 every morning and look7 chic, stylish and fresh. As a southern belle with a keen sense of style, WTVD anchorwoman Barbara Gibbs pulls it off. She has worked everywhere from a small cable station in Alabama to CNN – and lucky for us, she landed happily in the heart of North Carolina. We caught up with Gibbs to learn a few tricks of the trade, what fashion trends are at the top of her must-have list, and the beauty products she can't live without! How did you get into television? Have you always wanted to be a newscaster? I did always want to be a newscaster. I got into television after college at a tiny cable station in my hometown of Mobile, AL. I was the evening anchor doing five minute local cut-ins that aired on CNN Headline News.

Where are you from and how did you find yourself in NC? I lived in many areas growing up: Tennessee, Texas, and New Jersey before attending high school and college in Alabama. After my first TV job, I took more in Kentucky and Virginia before moving to NC for the job at ABC11.

What do you love most about NC? It is absolutely beautiful here: the mountains, beaches, sports, entertainment and easy access through RDU to travel anywhere! I love having four seasons (unlike Alabama where it’s hot most of the time), and the people here are so warm and friendly.

How would you describe your style? I am drawn to classic pieces and incorporate a “trendy” accessory or separate every once in a while. I love deep, solid fabrics. Rarely do I buy prints or stripes. I’d wear black every day if I could get away with it.

What are a few favorite hair products and make-up products that you just can not live without? Aerogel hairspray! It’s a strong hold without feeling stiff and was a fantastic tip from a professional makeup artist in Chicago. Chanel Double Perfection powder and MAC waterproof black eyeliner are also favorites.

SLEEP!! It’s necessary when you have to get up at 2:40AM. I cleanse with Cetaphil every morning and night, and I moisturize with Chanel Hydra Beauty Serum. I also use bareMinerals Well-Rested powdered concealer in the corners of my eyes to look bright eyed. Be careful, a little of that stuff goes a long way.

Any advice for ladies that wanting to get into the news industry? Like anything else in life, be yourself! Work on truly being able to communicate with people. Develop strong writing skills. Accentuate your own personal beauty; don’t try to look or sound like anyone else! I was always told to start off in a small market where you can make your mistakes and be forgiven.

SECRETS TO SUCCESS

PASSION, PLANNING AND LEARNING TO GROW WITH THE FLOW

What’s the secret to building a successful business? You need a strong resolve and the ability to evolve! We spoke with several local shop owners about their own success stories, and found that it’s all about finding your passion, putting your plans into action ... and then learning to step back and just “grow with the flow.” Written By Audrey D. Clyde Bailey of Bailey’s Fine Jewelry WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO SET UP SHOP? We’re three generations strong now. My mother and father opened the business in 1948 as a watch and jewelry repair shop, and I have followed in their footsteps. As our reputation grew for quality craftsmanship, we became a full-fledged jewelry store. We just love making people happy! HAS YOUR BUSINESS CHANGED OVER TIME? In business, you have to constantly be changing. As our clientele grew, our business model adapted. We started as a repair shop, then added diamonds and diamond jewelry, and now we’ve grown to be the largest designer fashion store in our market.

We made the decision and investment to add big designer names to our collection, such as David Yurman and Ippolita. This has made us more than a diamond store, but a place where women can come in and have fun with affordable fashion jewelry and big designer brands. We want to be all things to all people, and because of that you can get a necklace for $50 or $50,000. WHAT HAVE YOU ADAPTED AND “GROWN WITH THE FLOW?” We learned that the harder we work, the luckier we seem to get. We are very blessed. WHAT DO YOU SEE AHEAD? The world is becoming more and more digital and changing faster than ever before. In the jewelry industry, one thing never changes: the desire for personal, professional service. We see consumers rediscovering that they miss the personal shopping experience of small family businesses. winter | 35

ADVICE TO SHARE? You have to love what you do and have a passion for it, because it is going to take a lot of risk and a lot of work. Make sure you surround yourself with hardworking people who have a passion for it too.

Tricia Keane of Comfortable Soles WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO SET UP SHOP? Plagued with foot problems since my early 20s, I became a fan of Birkenstock sandals. Several years later we were living in Wilmington and I found that there was no store in town that specialized in this type of shoe. Light bulb! We needed this type of store, and in 1998 we opened our first location and it was very successful. Customers kept asking us to expand, and we opened stores in Raleigh and Chapel Hill and began introducing other comfort brands into the mix. There was a need I wanted to fill. HAS YOUR BUSINESS CHANGED OVER TIME? Birkenstock was a pioneer brand in our first shop, but we decided to expand our line. Today have five stores and offer about 60 different brands. Shoes are constantly changing; it’s very important for us to stay aware of the current trends. Comfort and fashion are merging more each season. Now customers want pretty and comfortable, so the lines have really evolved. How many times have you seen women walking around barefoot at a wedding because her heels killed her feet? Not anymore! HOW HAVE YOU ADAPTED AND “GROWN WITH THE FLOW?” Opening up as a Birkenstock specialty store, we quickly realized it was not a good idea to put all our eggs in one basket. No matter how great the brand, it is impossible for a single shoe to fit every person perfectly. Thankfully, we realized this early on and were able to modify our store and expand to lots of other brands.

WHAT DO YOU SEE AHEAD? Today I like to think of the company as a well oiled machine. It took us 10 years, but the growing pains and hard work has paid off. It is always important to keep tweaking and making sure customers are taken care of; we will always do what we have to to keep our customers number one. ADVICE TO SHARE? The most important thing to do is first to identify the need in your town. You have to like and be interested in what you do, and make sure your market isn’t saturated with similar businesses. Do your homework, make contacts, find a mentor and ask questions. Also, you cannot be successful without a good staff. My husband and I realized it was impossible to do everything ourselves – having a trustworthy corporate office is key. Being able to delegate tasks and trust people has made a huge difference. Put time into finding good people ... it’s worth the search! Find people with talents where you have weaknesses.

Tanda Jarest of Opulence of Southern Pines WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO SET UP SHOP? My husband Neal and I were living in New York in the early 90s where I worked as a sales rep for numerous luxury linen manufacturers. He was in the Army and transferred to Ft. Bragg. It was then that I found myself with very few luxury retailers to sell to in the area. My husband said, “If there is no one to sell to around here, why are we not opening a store?” The rest is history! HAS YOUR BUSINESS CHANGED OVER TIME? Opulence of Southern Pines opened its first shop in 1997. I started small, running the store alone six days a week for the first four years. That really allowed me to make lasting contacts with the

community. Many of those very first customers from 15 years ago still visit the store today. Loyal customers appreciate our incomparable product knowledge as well as our commitment to offering the best prices. In 2001, we purchased our own commercial building, and in 2004 opened a location in Cary. We also lovingly refer to our website as our third store as we are committed to building the same customer loyalty on all fronts. HOW HAVE YOU ADAPTED AND “GROWN WITH THE FLOW?” Two years ago we opened our fourth store, Duxiana of Southern Pines. This shop specializes in Duxiana: a Swedish mattress manufacturer offered in just 100 locations worldwide. We feel that it was a perfect fit. WHAT DO YOU SEE AHEAD? About five years ago, we added floral arrangements to our selections. Three years ago, we increased our linen offerings and then added the mattresses. This year we are adding a complete indoor/outdoor rug department. ADVICE TO SHARE? I have always stuck to my initial business plan, never compromising on quality. Even with the financial crisis, it has always been my belief that quality sells.

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO SET UP SHOP? This is our 21st year. My wife Barbara and I started selling women’s shoes in 1991 in a smaller warehouse around the corner. I grew up in the shoe business – my dad was in the industry and I learned a lot by working my way through college in the shoe department of Wanamaker’s in Philadelphia. There, I had plenty of opportunity to learn about planning ahead and building relationships. When I came to Raleigh, I wanted to offer

women fashionable shoes that were not readily available in this market. With my experience, I knew I could source factories and brands, and then pass these savings on to my customers. HAS YOUR BUSINESS CHANGED OVER TIME? Originally, we were only open Friday and Saturday. Now we’re open seven days a week! We started off by selling only women’s shoes, but after careful due diligence, we responded to customer demand for men’s and children’s lines as well. Over time, we’ve enjoyed controlled growth and have opened additional stores in Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and another North Carolina location in Greensboro. HOW HAVE YOU ADAPTED AND “GROWN WITH THE FLOW?” Our success has a lot to do with the fact that our dedicated employees have become our friends and family. Many of them have been with us ten to fifteen years! I don’t micro-manage; I give them autonomy and am always open to their new ideas. WHAT DO YOU SEE AHEAD? My daughter, Samantha, is now in the business, along with her husband. They will be part of the next generation with their fresh ideas and knowledge of the internet and social media. While we’re waiting out the economy, we will be giving them a chance to learn the business. They are our future and they will have a say in how things will move forward. ANY ADVICE TO SHARE? Make sure that you have at least five to ten years of experience in the business before you go out on your own. All new business ventures have a relatively small chance of success, but you can increase your odds if you know the learning curve from working for someone else.

Abe Safa of Bijuji WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO SET UP SHOP? I moved from New York in 1987. My wife Joujou, followed in 1998 when we met and married. Our retail experience made us feel that Accessories departments never did women justice, and they usually had to settle for what was

available. We wanted to make sure a woman could always find the perfect accessory to fit every outfit. It was important that we offer high quality items with reasonable prices, but without lowering standards. We wanted to create a place that makes a woman feel special every single time she comes in to every single Bijuju store. HAS YOUR BUSINESS CHANGED OVER TIME? We really haven’t wavered from our commitment to make business decisions on what is best for our customers – not necessarily what’s easiest or most profitable. Joujou is the buyer and merchandise coodinator as well as the mastermind behind the look and feel of the store. Together we work to make sure that we satisfy the various tastes of our customers, especially in the Triangle area which is very fashion forward. HOW HAVE YOU ADAPTED AND “GROWN WITH THE FLOW?” We always listen carefully to our customers.

10:37 AM

Every year we earn high scores on customer satisfaction surveys, and we really take to heart what they have to say. We’ve responded to requests for more promotions and discounts, and we love getting comments on how well our customers have been treated. All that positive feedback really puts a smile on our faces! WHAT DO YOU SEE AHEAD? We opened one shop in 2004, then quickly added another. Now we have eight, but we want to be careful about going too fast. We’re always looking to expand, but don’t want to add more stores just for the sake of growing. It is important for us to make sure that we can always care for our customers with the high quality products and services. ADVICE TO SHARE? Opening a business can be very challenging, and you really need to have passion for your product and service. You can’t go into business for the sake of making money alone, or the competition will gobble you up quickly. Today every business also has to compete with the internet, but the ability to truly get to know your customers by working with them in person, face to face, is impossible to replicate online.

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO SET UP SHOP? We’ve been a family owned and independently operating furniture store since 1972. North Carolina is known for its furniture industry, and we have chosen to specialize in custom and special order furniture from brand names such as Bernhardt, Broyhill, Hancock & Moore, Hooker, Hekman, Lexington, Stanley and many more. HAS YOUR BUSINESS CHANGED OVER TIME? Our traditional business was successful, but we chose to develop further by building our internet presence. New technology is an important part of our business model. Our customer base has expanded across the country, and we now offer delivery throughout the US.

Mary Virginia Liles of Monograms, Inc. WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO SET UP SHOP? Exquisite, hand-sewn monograms were a part of my southern heritage. After a brief career teaching kindergarten, articles from Martha Stewart magazines fed my passion to design and create monograms, and a vision of having my own shop. Encouraged by my family, I set up a small monogramming machine in my home and began monogramming ribbon burp cloths for newborns, eyelet trimmed cotton panties for little girls, make-up towels for graduation presents, and beach towels for everyone in my family. Those closest to me were my first customers, and my concept for blending the old with the new took shape. HAS YOUR BUSINESS CHANGED OVER TIME? I have grown from a home-based cottage business. My first retail location was 1200 square feet. Five years later I’m in Raleigh’s most desired shopping destination, Midtown at North Hills, and our space has doubled!

HOW HAVE YOU ADAPTED AND “GROWN WITH THE FLOW?” We’ve tried to stay current using technology, offering internet sales and a search capacity to our mobile app which is available from our website. We also offer a free online room planning tool – which is a great interactive way to play around with virtual furniture layout and designs for your specific needs.

HOW HAVE YOU ADAPTED AND “GROWN WITH THE FLOW?” My biggest and most successful change has been moving to the new location. As a sole proprietor, I’ve stuck to my passion for monograms and my vision of having an upscale monogram store. When customers come in, they’re excited to find a one-of-a-kind shop that offers monogramming and engraving services on site.

WHAT DO YOU SEE AHEAD? We’ve been fortunate to receive the Herald Sun’s Reader’s Choice Award for best furniture store in the area five out of the last six years. We are looking into expanding and offering a new line of outdoor furniture, and we will continue offering our customers the best experience possible.

WHAT DO YOU SEE AHEAD? As a wife and mother, it has taken me almost two years to find just the right work/life balance. My family, friends, great employees and customers have helped make growing the business a positive thing for me. I like what I do and that makes for a great life too!

ADVICE TO SHARE? Retail is a tough and time consuming business. To see success, you better have a passion for the category and become an expert in the field.

ADVICE TO SHARE? If you are interested in building a business, then let it be yours! Have a vision and stick to it. Make sure there is a market for it before spending the money on brick and mortar. And don’t be afraid to negotiate and ask for what you need from your landlords. winter | 41

Winter is a time for change... A makeover at joule salon can be life changing!! This is what I love doing more then anything. This is why our hairstyle has to evolve with these changes or it will age us. These changes can be as simple as: • Updating your haircut • Update or changing your color • Covering grey or just adding lowlites to grey hair • Simply change your part • Try bangs • Add beautiful shine and highlites • Add texture • Add Dimension to a brunette • Then treat yourself to a new lipstick and earings! EVERYDAY ELEGANCE Recipes by Nancy Aiken everydayelegancefood@gmail.com Find this and more recipes at my new blog: Thewayweeattoday.blogspot.com

TWICE BAKED NEW POTATOES Traditional cheddar and bacon give way to tangy goat cheese and smoky prosciutto in this updated version of the twicebaked potato. Use new potatoes and top with sweetcaramelized onions and this smaller version of a classic will become a perfect elegant appetizer or fun side dish your family and friends will love! Using small potatoes cuts the baking time in half and makes this recipe perfect for everyday and easy entertaining. INGREDIENTS YOU NEED:

• • • • • • • •

2 pounds new potatoes (about 2-3 inches in diameter) 1 tablespoon olive oil Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper to coat uncooked potatoes 3 ounces goat cheese, at room temperature 6 tablespoons butter, at room temperature 1/4 cup sour cream 3 slices prosciutto, diced Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

FOR THE CARAMELIZED ONION TOPPING • 1 medium sweet onion, diced • 2 tablespoons olive oil • Pinch of salt

Preheat the oven to 425º. Wash and dry the potatoes and place in a large bowl. Toss with olive oil, coarse salt and ground pepper to lightly coat the potatoes. Transfer the potatoes to a baking sheet and roast until tender, about 30-40 minutes. Meanwhile, make the caramelized onion topping. In a heavy sauté pan heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium high heat and add the diced onions. Sauté, stirring occasionally, until the onions begin to turn translucent, but before they turn brown. Add a pinch of salt, reduce the heat to low and allow the onions to continue caramelizing, stirring occasionally to keep from burning, about another 15 minutes. Once the potatoes are tender, remove from the oven and allow to cool until easy to handle. Cut each potato in half lengthwise. Using a melon baller, scoop out the potato flesh, leaving about 1/4 inch potato shell. Transfer the potato flesh into a medium bowl and add the goat cheese, sour cream, butter and prosciutto. Using a potato masher, combine all the ingredients. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Spoon the potato mixture into the potato shells and arrange back onto the baking sheet. Top each stuffed potato with the caramelized onion topping and bake at 350º for about 10 minutes, until the potatoes are heated through and the cheese is melted. Makes about 24 Hors d'Oeuvres or serves 6-8 as a side dish.

a change of course I never, ever considered being a nurse. When my college roommate majored, graduated and worked in nursing, I never gave it a second thought. I was a writer and a teacher—science was not my thing. But lo and behold, twenty years later I majored, graduated, and am now working as a nurse—and loving it, I might add. When people ask me why I became a nurse, or even better, thank me for being their nurse—I can’t really describe the journey that brought me to this mid-life course change. I just know that it was one of the most surprising and satisfying decisions I ever made. Written By Kelley Reep, RN

For Every Occasion

April S. is a thirty-something wife and mother. Her children, Ruby (9) and Alex (6) are smart, funny and curious. “We love being parents and find such joy in being a family,” explains April. “We knew we wanted to have more kids, and adoption had been on our radar since early in our marriage. We just always thought it was a good thing that we would like to do someday. For a long time it wasn't anything more than a topic we talked about from time to time.” Then April and her husband became involved with Build the Village in Choimim, Kenya. Build the Village is a Christian organization, dedicated to education and community support. In this Choimim, there are a number of widows and orphans, as well as people afflicted by hunger, childhood disease, or HIV. “Spending time firsthand with orphans made adoption seem less like a good idea for someday and more like an imperative for now. Every child should have the opportunity to be loved and cherished.” April and Jon’s decision is highly motivated by their deep Christian faith. “To me, this is just living the Christian life. Being a Christian isn't what happens on Sundays. It's the everyday that counts. It's loving and giving and caring and expecting nothing in return.” “We are working with Amazing Grace Adoptions in Raleigh. We chose Amazing Grace because their work in Uganda developed very organically out of a long-term humanitarian relationship with the community in Fort Portal. They work with an orphanage and local authorities to help

strengthen families and provide job training and education.” Currently, April and Jon have completed their home-study program and are wading through the stacks of paperwork required for approval. April compares it to her other pregnancies— lots of waiting—but with more uncertainty. By the time they receive immigration approval, they will be matched with a child and ready to send paperwork to the home country. Together with their children they will travel overseas to get their son or daughter. The biggest obstacle so far has been financing, explains April. “But we were told not worry too much about the cost of adopting. It is very expensive. But the payments are spread out over time and we've been able to save up and plan fundraisers like yard sales and an online auction to raise money. The cost can seem prohibitive, but when you break it down over the twelve to twenty-four months that it typically takes to complete an adoption, it becomes more manageable. You begin to look at your budget and see what you can do without and you know that it's completely worth it.” To learn more about April’s journey, follow her on her blog: www.howitmatters.com

Andrea B, a registered nurse from Raleigh, has always volunteered in the community, spending some of her free time working with the Open Door Clinic in Raleigh. Recently, a trip to Haiti opened her eyes to the tremendous need for medical help in countries challenged by war, poverty, or natural disasters. “I went to Haiti because like many nurses, I am passionate about caring for people. I knew that there was an overwhelming need in that country, and I also was feeling that 64 | triangle style

perhaps God was calling me to international missions.” While in Haiti, Andrea and her team treated close to 1,000 people who had a variety of medical needs. “We treated everything from minor colds with congestion to cholera!” she explains. She was moved by the people, who were cheerful and welcoming despite their extreme lack of resources. After her return home, Andrea did some soul searching. She reconsidered her goals. A critical care nurse with many years of experience, she had already been accepted into a prestigious graduate program for nurse anesthetists. She knew she could look forward to many more years working in a very lucrative field.

the nurse anesthetist program, but instead, am pursuing a nurse practitioner degree.” As a nurse practitioner, Andrea will be able to diagnose and treat patients, as well as prescribe medications. In areas of the world that lack adequate medical care, a nurse-practitioner is an incredibly valuable resource. Andrea will complete her degree in December of 2015. For now, she is continuing her work with the Open Door Clinic while studying Haitian Creole in an effort to better communicate with the people she will serve. For more information on the Open Door Clinic, go to www.urbanmin.org/open-door-clinic/.

“After travelling to Haiti, that all changed,” she says. “Now, I am no longer enrolled in

Melissa M. of Cary is no stranger to struggle. A number of years ago she was in a serious accident and broke her back. Later, her house was lost in a fire. The years of struggle took their toll on her health—and her weight. “I had never had an issue with my weight,” she explains. “Even when I had children, I always got back to my normal weight.” However, the accident, the fire, other life challenges, “and just good old middle age!” conspired to layer on the pounds. “I tried a number of diets…South Beach, no-carb, no processed foods,” she remembers. Still, her weight continued to climb. One day, however, she noticed a friend who had lost a great deal of weight. “I told her it looked like she was half her size,” Melissa recalls. Her friend recommended a local doctor, George Bartels, who owned a medical weight loss clinic. She urged Melissa to go for a consultation. “Shortly after that,” Melissa says, “I began noticing a number of other women who had lost weight, and almost all of them had gone to Dr. Bartels as well!” The initial consult was free, she says. “Then, Dr. Bartels works with you to create a plan that is right for your lifestyle. All involve a balanced diet of carbs, protein, fat and plenty of water to increase your metabolism and help you lose weight the right way.” Melissa had mentally steeled herself for the challenge of Day One. “I expected to be hungry all the time,” she says. She was pleasantly surprised to find that the schedule of multiple mini-meals throughout the day, combined with a light program of exercise, made losing weight, “while not easy, definitely not as hard as I expected,” says Melissa.

She lost a total of fifty pounds in about seven months. She has been able to keep it off the past three years by monitoring her weight and not allowing it to creep past a five pound limit. In addition, she plans ahead for special events when she knows she may eat more. Before a recent party, for example, “I cut back on my carbs for a few days and exercised a bit more. That way I knew that I could eat some of the things I like without having to worry about putting on weight.” Since that time, she has enjoyed the reward of her hard work. The weight loss has relieved the burden on her joints and back—lessening her daily aches and pains and making exercise easier. Shopping for clothes is not a problem now, “and I enjoy the compliments I get.” However, she says that the greatest reward is the satisfaction of knowing that she overcame a tough obstacle. When faced with other challenges she can now say: “I did it before, I can do it again.” To learn more about Dr. Bartels and his clinic, see www.bartelsmedical.com

customers, Triangle Style had the opportunity to ask her a few questions about her fabulous pants! What inspired you to create the Lisette pant? My husband and I sold other companies’ lines for many years. I always talked to the customers of the stores we sold to and they could never find a pant that fit them properly. So I started studying all the fabrics I could use and picked styles that everybody would like. I asked questions to all the consumers and the store owners, and I decided to make my own line of pants and see how it goes. What makes your pants so great? My pants are great because they have the best fit ever. Everybody who tries them, buys them. They’re easy to wash, just put them in the washing machine, hang them to dry, and that’s it! You can wear them to go to the gym if you want, for a walk, to work, or to go out at night, just change your shirt and shoes and you’re ready to go! Besides that, they just slip on, there’s no button or zipper to deal with so the fit is nice and smooth.

Lisette Limoges, designer and owner of the Lisette pants, traveled from Montreal, Canada to visit C.T. Weekends in Cameron Village September 6th-8th. Her great-fitting pants have been flying off the racks at C.T. Weekends and women all over the Triangle can’t get enough of Lisette’s signature “Flaterie Fit.” Even Kathy Lee has raved about them on the Today Show! While Lisette was at C.T. Weekends previewing her spring collection and consulting with 68 | triangle style

Who can wear the Lisette pants? We have a daughter, she wears them, I wear them, and my mother wears them. The same pants can be worn by three generations. The pants follow the body, they follow the curves, and if you have a little tummy, they hold you well. When you pull them on, its like wearing nothing. My daughter travels a lot, so they are great for her because they are so

comfortable and they don’t wrinkle if you pack them. When you sit, they don’t cut you in the waist, even my mother likes wearing them. You have to feel good and comfortable in what you’re wearing and we have different lengths of skirts and pants to fit everybody. That’s what I’m trying to do, to make people feel good in what they’re wearing.

“FLATTERIE FIT” AVAILABLE IN ANKLE LENGTH AND FULL LENGTH

What has been the most rewarding part of creating the Lisette pants? When I meet people who wear my pants and they tell me they love them. Sometimes they’ll say, “I have all the colors, I wear only your pants!” When they tell me that, and I feel like a million dollars. I also love to meet the people. We used to sell only in Canada, but now we’re selling in the U.S. I like to go see the stores and the different types of people and different bodies who wear my pants. That was my goal, to create a pair of pants that everyone could wear and be happy wearing. I get to meet so many nice people. Like here, at C.T. Weekends for example, Dennis has introduced me to a lot of people, and they’re all nice. Everywhere I go it’s the same thing, they’re all friendly and it makes me feel good. What’s next for the Lisette pant? Everyone keeps asking me “When are you going to make tops and other things?” But I’m specialized, I only want to do pants and skirts. Right now, we are selling to more stores in more cities. I go to the office in Montreal, work on the design, and then I like to travel to see what the people like. When I have a lot of people asking me for the same thing, I try to make them happy and do it. Its not like I come up with something and everybody has to buy it because its fashion. I find that my secret is listening to what the people want and giving it to them. Try the miraculous pants for yourself! The Lisette pants and skirt are available in many styles and colors at C.T. GUY BEDARIDA: JOHN HARDY’S HEAD DESIGNER opens up about the company’s unique , eco-friendly approach to fine jewelry What drives the inspiration behind your designs? In Bali, my major source of inspiration is nature. For that I am really blessed, because my design studio is in a completely open space, and there is nature growing everywhere. From bamboo, to ferns, flowers, rice, I mean everything! I’m also traveling all over the world. Sometimes my inspiration comes from ancient cultures; could be from Rajasthan, could be from the forbidden city, from China, could be from Thailand.

Guy Bedarida lives and works in Bali as Head Designer of John Hardy Jewelry, where beautiful, natural surroundings inspire his signature, hand-crafted pieces. While at Bailey’s Fine Jewelry in Raleigh, Triangle Style had the chance to interview Guy about his inspiration and John Hardy’s commitment to environmental and humanitarian causes. What sets John Hardy apart from other luxury jewelry brands? I think its really the authenticity of the brand. I design based on pure inspiration, and we make everything by hand. Once I find something that I feel is very unique and special, I will start to build a collection around that inspiration, and the collection will be done 100% by hand. I think we are the last company in the world who still does everything by hand. John Hardy is not a marketing brand, its really, totally authentic. 70 | triangle style

What are the steps involved in creating a piece of John Hardy jewelry? It all starts with pure inspiration. I come back from traveling, and I start to do some very rough, quick sketches. Then I meet with my team, and share with them my inspiration and what really moves me, and what I feel could be an incredible piece two or three years from now. Once the very important stage of drawing is done, I will choose a young woman to take care of the merchandising, and she will tell us what items we really need for a collection. We try to include these new items in one of our major anchor collections, like the Dot Collection, the Naga Collection, the Kali Collection or the Classic Chain, of course. Once this is done, I launch all the handcarving of each piece, and I do all the prototypes. At that point, I will present it to all of our American buyers, and they will choose what they want. It’s a process that takes about a year and a half to two years until the item is ready to be sold. Tell us about the amazing, luxury craftsmanship behind your jewelry. All of the chains in the Classic Chain Collection are completely hand-woven, link by link. The technique has existed for more than 2,000 years in Bali, and it was brought back by John Hardy in the 1970s. We really developed this craftsmanship and knowledge

Lisette Winter12:healthy habits-winter

11/18/12

more than ever. It is very difficult, very time consuming and you have to have incredible patience. It is really a social responsibility as well, because most of the chains we do not weave in a factory, but we give the silver to 400 people weaving at home. Most of them are women taking care of their kids, and this provides an income for their families, which we feel is very important. This craftsmanship is really bringing an interesting local economy to the people. What are some of the other humanitarian and environmental initiatives taken by John Hardy jewelry? We are a people company, as well as an environmental company. We are what we are because of the people, so we care about them. I created a special foundation for orphans in Bali called “Jobs for Life.” When these children turn eighteen, they can no longer stay in the orphanage, but if they know how to make something, they can have a job and they will be set forever. So we provide them with vocational training to ease their transition into the real world. The environment, for us, has always been important, as well, and for a very simple reason. In Bali, we are

2:36 PM

Page 4

in the middle of a very beautiful environment, so it is really our duty to protect it. And for that we do many things, for instance, the program called “Wear Bamboo, Plant Bamboo.” I have a collection that is designed all around bamboo, and every time a customer buys one of these pieces, we are replanting real bamboo. Since we started this program, we have planted over 800,000 bamboo plants, which is more than five times the size of Central Park in New York City. This is also a way for us to offset our carbon emissions, which is very important. What brings you to Bailey’s in Raleigh? Bailey’s and the people of Raleigh have invited me here, for the second time, and I accepted the invitation immediately. I enjoy meeting the Raleigh people and the Bailey’s family very much.

aging gracefully Written By Lou Scott

If you’re anything like me, for years and years you diligently wrote out your New Year’s Resolutions, only to feel depressed a year later if you didn’t keep them. Well, here are some you can feel happy about. They will help you feel better about yourself and others, which go a long way toward looking good and aging well. • Forget about that diet you may not keep and cling to thought of how really delicious fresh fruits and vegetables can be. Don’t even walk down that snack aisle in the grocery store. • If you see someone who gets on your nerves for some inexplicable reason, focus on something positive, even if it’s only her pretty shoes. If she’s bossy, tell yourself she knows her own mind—etc., etc., etc. Whether you realize it or not, unkind thoughts show on your face. And vice versa! • When eating breakfast out, remember it takes as many trips to your table for breakfast as it does for lunch. Be kind -- tip your server accordingly. You will feel all the better for it.

72 | triangle style

• The election is over. You can now reconnect with all your facebook friends who were on the opposite side of the political fence. • Wave to your neighbors. If you’re not especially fond of them, so much the better. • Go to a museum or an art exhibit you haven’t seen before. • Give a thank you card, perhaps include a check, to your garbage collector. It’s really appreciated! How do I know? My garbage can is the only one on my street standing up straight when I come home. • If you are having trouble falling asleep, put a difficult book by your bed and read it. It works every time.

Aging Gracefully Winter 12:healthy habits-winter

• If you can’t resist criticizing someone (even in your own mind) end it with "God bless her." It’s hard to completely dislike someone you’ve just reminded yourself has God on her side.

• Keep track of elderly neighbors who live alone. • Lower your voice, talk more slowly and be more gentle. • When under stress, sleep, rest, have tea. • Irritated by a know-it-all? Just say thank you. Sooner or later, you might learn something useful. • Not big on decorating? A durable centerpiece for your table will do just fine. (I just love lighting a candle in my ceramic pumpkin.) • Keep the annual Christmas letters you receive. As the years go by you’ll appreciate having them. • Whenever you send flowers, ask which ones last the longest and include them. • Every day at the same time, set aside five minutes to just relax -- no matter how busy you are. • Don’t text while driving. • Only volunteer for what you can do or are willing to do. (You can always change your mind later.) • Next time you are irritated with someone, pay attention to the tone of your own voice.

the experts speak Answered By Lisa Rivoli, joule salon

Hairstyles are going through a major trend make-over for 2013! Forget the bobs and go for the braids – here are a few more of the hottest hair trends and a the 411 on hair to wear from pro stylist and owner, Lisa Rivoli of joule salon in Cary. The Knot is Hot A sleek, side-part and low ponytail with hair “tied” in a bun or knot is THE hair to have this holiday season. Complete this look with a spritz of shine spray and you will look like a star! Bundles of Braids Messy, multiples and the more, the merrier – braids are hair's best friend for 2013. Feel too old to sport the braid? Begin with a larger back braid and work your way into smaller, more trendy styles. Rock n' Roll Waves are perfect for all parties. Beachy and touselled with a “dare to care” look, these waves look best when they begin half way down the head. Use a medium sized curling iron, spray and then separate with your fingers. Shake and party on! Accessorize From headbands with unique designs, colors and embellishments to ribbons sewn throughout the hair, go for something different that ties your outfit together! Try a few pearls or flowers to top off your WHAT HOLIDAY HAIR TRENDS ARE YOU SEEING THIS SEASON? It’s all about the” blow dry” this holiday season. Joule Salon has become the official blow dry bar in Cary because of our focus on making every client look and feel like she is walking the Red Carpet. The holiday trends we are seeing are soft

feminine waves and curls on long and short hair. Braids are on trend to wear this holiday season and we are incorporating braids with all looks, whether it's upswept or if you choose, to wear it down. DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR PEOPLE AFRAID TO TRY SOMETHING NEW? I say, don’t be afraid. If you are, find a stylist you can trust and talk to without feeling rushed or intimidated. A great stylist will take the time to get to know you and will be able to make suggestions according to your personality, lifestyle, height, face shape and how much time you are willing to spend on your hair. It’s always good to bring in a picture to see what inspires you. WHAT COLOR CUT AND STYLE HAIR TRENDS DO YOU PREDICT FOR 2013? I get my inspiration from what the celebrities are wearing and what ever L’Oreal is creating at fashion week. What our team noticed on the runway this season with L’Oreal was; Color, Color, Color!! Vibrate reds with strong coppers and mahogany. Adding dimension to brunettes by adding cool reds or soft, natural caramel highlights. We are adding stronger dimension to our blondes using two and three different shades of blonde. Ok, I hate to say it ladies but…its time to walk away from the traditional graduated bob for 2013! It’s all about movement, waves, and femininity for the new year. Using the right products, blow dry techniques and curling iron work we can transform that bob without cutting it and make it look on trend. Just don’t be afraid to change your hair this season. If you are afraid, you will be missing out on one of the most beautiful hair trends for women that I have seen in a long time.

ask anna Hi Anna, I enjoyed reading about your favorite makeup products in the fall issue. I was wondering the same sort of thing but in regards to skincare, what are some of your products? - Lauren My personal favorite skin care products might not be the right product for you, as everyone’s own skin care needs are not the same as mine. However, there are a few essential skin care ingredients that almost all skin types can greatly benefit from using. When selecting a skin care regimen following the latest trends is not always a good idea, but rather using products/ingredients that are scientifically proven and medically recognized will save you money and provide you with the greatest results. HERE’S A LIST OF PRODUCTS/INGREDIENTS THAT ALMOST EVERY PERSON CAN BENEFIT FROM:

IN THE

AM

1. Cleanse with something mild that’s not going to make your skin photosensitive (sun sensitive).

2. An antioxidant that contains a high concentration of Vitamin C and/or Vitamin E. 3. Apply a broad spectrum SPF, preferably one that contains titanium or zinc oxide which, regardless of whether or not you feel you are exposed to the sun directly every day you are getting indirect exposure, which contributes not only rapid signs of aging, but also to various forms of skin cancer. 4. A hydrator that contains hyaluronic acid, which is a moisture binding ingredient that’s going to lock and keep moisture/hydration in the skin. 1. Cleanse with an appropriate facial wash based on your skin type, for IN THE example if you are oily prone use PM more of a AHA/BHA based cleanser, where if you’re dry you may want to use a more mild cleanser which contains lactic acid which is hydrating and exfoliating. 78 | triangle style

2. Alternate between a retinol based product one evening and an AHA such as glycolic the next night (for more sensitive skin lactic acid is a good alternative to glycolic). By alternating these two products every night, you allow for increased cellular turnover which will leave the skin smoother, softer, and more supple. 3. Your third evening step will vary based on any skin specific issues you may have, such as dark spots, acne, rosacea, etc. This is where you will need to find a product that specifically addresses your needs and concerns. For this you will probably need to seek the help of a professional skin care specialist such as a dermatologist or medical aesthetician. 4. Reapply the same hydrator from the day time, or if you so desire, select a richer, more emollient based moisturizing cream. This is sometimes necessary in the dryer winter months when the skin tends to be more dehydrated. If you’re looking to go for a complete skincare regimen don’t forget to address the needs of your lashes, which as we age tend to become thin, brittle, dry, and often times fall out. For longer, sexy, fuller lashes that will have you looking fabulous this holiday season I highly recommend acquiring a prescription of Latisse. While consistency of application is important in order to achieve maximum results the extra step of applying the solution nightly is well worth a few extra minutes added to your nighttime skin care routine. Anna Porrazzo owns Synergy Spa in Raleigh and teaches corrective makeup and innovative skin care to dermatologists, plastic surgeons, estheticians and spa owners worldwide. movie night Written by Heather S. Parsons • heather@trianglestyle.com

Enchanted April is one of those meandering films that simply feels good, one with lush scenery, quiet romance and very good acting -- perfect for those times when all you want to do is sit back and relax. Browsing through the paper in a tea shop on a dreary day in England, Lottie (Josie Lawrence) comes across a classified ad for a beautiful old villa that’s for rent on a sunny island in Italy. On the spur of the moment Lottie asks the woman at the next table if she would like to go with her. With some hesitation, the woman accepts. For her husband has grown tired of her and she is lonely. The rent however turns out to be more than either woman can afford, so they find two more strangers to join them-- one, a fussy intellectual (Joan Plowright) who prefers her own company and the other a beauty (Miranda Richardson) who wants to get away from the spotlight for a while.

Ever After Have you long believed the classic Cinderella (Drew Barrymore) story is simply a fantasy the Grimm Brothers made up? Well, it’s not. It’s based on real people and Cinderella’s aristocratic great-great granddaughter now wants to set the record straight. Hence, she summons the Brothers Grimm to tell them they got the story all wrong. But it’s not their fault. Through the centuries the correct details of Cinderella’s story were forgotten, watered down, romanticized, and finally turned into a complete fantasy. The real love story, she tells them, is so much more interesting, so much more complex than the Cinderella and Prince Charming we all know. Why, they even got her great-great grandmother’s name

80 | triangle style

all wrong. Whereas it was true that she was treated like a little cinder girl by her misrepresented step-mother, her real name was Danielle, not Cinderella. And Prince Charming’s real name she tells them was Prince Henry, and he was not exactly Prince Charming. Angelica Huston’s (the wicked stepmother)performance is pitch perfect amusing and Drew Barrymore is at her simply adorable but intelligent best.

Queen to Play While making the bed in a hotel room, Helene catches a glimpse of a couple sitting at a little table on the balcony. Between them is a chess set. The woman is wearing a filmy nightgown, lovingly caressing the chess pieces, flirting with the man who is gazing into her eyes, entirely charmed by her, while they leisurely play this most interesting game. When Helene goes home that evening, she tries to get her husband’s attention; however, he barely looks in her direction, let alone into her eyes. If they learned how to play chess with each other, she believes, this would have to change. Day and night, Helene studies the rules and the moves of the game. But it doesn’t make any difference in her marriage if her husband won’t play it. Yet Helene keeps on learning, in fact she can’t stop herself from learning, for the game of chess has become her obsession; igniting a passion and a sense of independence in her that she had long thought forgotten.
