editor’s letter Independence Day – has been a day that we as a country have celebrated since we took our independence from England in 1776. Today many of us are reflecting on who we are or more accurately who have we become as a nation. After the recent tragic events in Orlando and with it being an election year – it appears that this country feels more divided now than any other time in my life. It is my hope that we all as individuals stop for a minute over the 4th of July to consider these things and clarify them in our own minds. What does it really mean to be an American? Is everybody on the planet an American as soon as they step foot on this soil or is it something more special than that? Are we a sovereign nation or are we a one world nation? Do we have our own and unique identity much like every other nation on earth or does the fact that we are made up from the melting pot of all nations remove our American identity? I do know that our founding fathers put a system in place that made our nation a place where a lot of people the world over wanted and dreamed of being a part of and that goal still exists all over the world today. But once we arrive here…then what am I? A Norwegian-American? Or am I an American from Norway? There is a difference in my mind and it is not trivial. I am not trying to make a political point here and I am not judging how you arrived here, I am just asking all of us that are here to think about what it means to be here. And what is our part in the bigger picture? For us, as bikers we are fortunate because no matter how divided the rest of the country is we all have one very big thing in our lives that bring us all together. The love of motorcycles crosses all divides, when you are admiring a bike that is parked next to yours you do not care who the owner of that bike is voting for or what country they came from we just know that right at that moment we have more in common - than not. Just maybe that is a good place for us all to start and a great example of how we can all move forward and away from all of this division. As editors of Thunder Roads NorCal, we have to give a huge shout out to all of you that have sent in articles and photos from your events! We want them - so keep them coming. We will always try our hardest to get them in because as you know we just can’t be everywhere at once. On that note though, please be patient with us we only have so many pages to accommodate the abundance of content that we receive each month. So if you send us something that does not make it in the magazine, don’t be discouraged and please try again in the future we very much appreciate your contribution! We are grateful that we are living in an area that has more motorcycle activity going on than most and we are doing our best to keep up with it. The rally is also a perfect opportunity to check out the other Indian models on their showroom floor that are more than likely have a one-of-a-kind paint job from their custom paint program. And if you’re curious about how the 2016 Indian models or 2017 Victory Octane would feel on a ride – it will be here for your opportunity for demo rides. Indian Motorcycles have been making a big rumble throughout the industry over the last few years and there is no sign of that rumble quieting down as their engineering and craftsmanship ramps it up even more. In fact, we are

starting to see more and more custom bike builders start to take these bikes to an entirely new level. It was during a marketing discussion about the unveiling this month’s RIDE PRIDE that Indian Motorcycle marketing specialist, Robert Pandya was curious about the history behind the Hollister Rally. Hollister Powersports owner, Rey Sotelo told TRM NorCal that after hearing the story that Pandya resolved that “Hollister got a bad rap - because it was not even bikers that started the riot!” Then he said “I got it...the Redeemer! We will call it (the bike) that to redeem Hollister’s name!” And so here it is....THE REDEEMER Article by Stan Hill. Photos contributed by Greg Hurley

S

Carburetors - Part VI

o here it is folks, the final tip of the carburetor series. We covered the modern O.E.M. fuel mixers and a few of the popular aftermarket products. We discussed tuning components and procedures. To wrap this all up, let’s go back to the early beginnings of Harley-Davidson and look at some of the carbs they used back in the day.

In 1966 the Motor Company introduced the all new Shovelhead, and along with it came the Tillotson carburetor. Universally hated by the masses, this one was the most misunderstood fuel mixer of them all. In hindsight, these really weren’t bad carbs, just a bit complicated for the times. Once the Bendix was introduced in 1971, Tillotsons were hitting the garbage can post haste.

During the first six years William Harley, Arthur Davidson, and Walter Davidson used their own carburetor design, with a little help from Ole Evinrude. According to the Motor Company records, they even supplemented their income in 1905 by manufacturing and selling float feed carburetors, boat motors, and props. In 1909, they offered the Schebler Model H carburetor as an option. That could bring the price tag of your brand new Harley north of $300.00. Yep, they were pretty proud of their stuff back then too. The Schebler did well enough to stick around for quite a few years.

The much beloved Bendix carburetor was a simple, reliable product and a welcomed change. A no frills butterfly style carb, it served Harley-Davidson well for 5 years. It was also known as the Zenith.

Save one year, these remained in the lineup until the Linkert came to town in 1933. For one year only the brothers brought in Carter carburetors. They were deemed overly complicated and the decision was made to go back to the Schebler.

Last but not least, the Keihin carburetor arrived in 1976. Much like the Bendix, the Keihin was a basic butterfly style carb. Simple and reliable, it did well all the way through 1988 when Mother Harley brought in its final change, the Keihin Constant Velocity.

If you have a 1924 H-D Carter on the shelf, remove it from the shelf and place it in the safe you’re going to buy. Most of you will recognize Carter as a name in the automotive industry. The Linkert did so well the Motor Company ran these from 1933 all the way to the last Panhead in 1965. I have a customer that has one of these. Last Pan, last Linkert, first electric start. He continues to refuse to sell it. As a side note many of the parts of the Linkert and Schebler are interchangeable.

There were many changes over the years to the method of conventional fuel delivery starting with the legendary tomato can prototype, giving way to our current electronic fuel injection. We’ll cover EFI in the future. Questions and comments can be sent to e-mail: craig@twogunnerscustomiron.com, or call 530-263-8071. Additional information can be found www.twogunnerscustomiron.com. Roadshows crew managed rider registration in the Reno Ballroom handing out packets that included ride pins, official Spring Rally Street Vibrations schedule of events and tee shirts along with special parking, food and free registrations to various events being held during the weekend. Well worth the cost! A diverse group of talented fire artists called Controlled Burn gave the crowd a wild show dancing to music while they handled various fire instruments, leaving a glowing impression on the crowd. A wide-eyed crowd gathered as the Straight Up SJ stunt riders (Chris Tiopan, Roger Regan and Scott Horton) entertained with jaw dropping stunts. This is one team of stunt riders you don’t want to miss…but if you did - you’ll get another chance in July during the Hollister Rally and at the 4th Annual FXRS of California Grudge races in Sacramento on August 20th. Lot’s of bands and every kind of music was on hand at various stages throughout the area. Beatles Flashback Band gave the crowds a Beatles Tribute and wooed the audience with their humor and audience participation. Lucky Tongue Band was located just outside of Harrah’s Reno. A unique blend of music influenced by the Beatles and Rolling Stones. Lucky Tongue is comprised of a father Blaine and his two sons Dylan & Blade. Lucky Tongue has been performing at motorcycle rallies for the past 4 years and returned this year by popular demand. Harrah’s Plaza stage offered continuous music by Foreigner Unauthorized and Left of Center while the audience sat under sun protected canopies. A special bar was set up by Harrah’s Reno to accommodate the thirsty crowd. Rick Hammond Band, Moz Motley Blues Band, NV Hazzurd, and We \ Rock Camp played at the Silver Legacy. At the El Dorado was Jason King and Blues Monsters. Crush and Keep on Truckin Band could be seen at Circus Circus.

On Friday and Saturday, the Silver Legacy preformed a ceremonial flag raising with Darcy Gibson singing the National Anthem, accompanied by Doug Coomier on sax. Then on Sunday morning, The Christian Motorcycle Association – CMA held church services on the Silver Legacy stage. Happening down in Carson City, you’ve heard the saying “come out big or don’t come out at all”. Well that’s exactly what Battle Born Harley-Davidson of Carson City did for their Grand Opening. Stunt riders, vendors, beer garden, live bands, BBQ, live radio remotes and a raffle with the grand prize of a brand new Harley-Davidson Street 750! A big shout out for Maya Keller the Manager for Battle Born HD who took the time out of his very busy day to welcome our TRM NorCal’s contributor, answering questions and giving her a brief lay of the land before she started shooting (taking pictures that is). Great guy! Make sure you stop by and say hi. The highlight of the grand opening was the raffle. And Battle Born HD went “HOG” wild with the prizes. Steve B. received a free room at the Gold Dust West. Evan L. won tickets to the Aces baseball game. Christina D won a Harley-Davidson Academy class. Dereck S. won a $500 Battle Born HD gift certificate. Shannon T. held the winning ticket for the $1,000 Battle Born gift certificate. Drum Roll Please!!! Premium Motorcycle Care Products

ike many of you, I take pride in my ride and try to keep it looking good and in good mechanical shape. After all, we depend heavily on our Thunder Roads NorCal Indian Roadmaster to take us everywhere we need to be including getting to all of our appointments during the week as well as weekend events - just so we can be with all of you! Trust me, I would rather not spend any more time than necessary on keeping this workhorse clean with our busy schedule. Recently, I was introduced to MotorcycleRow (www.motorcyclerow.com) Premium Motorcycle Care samples to do a PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT for the magazine. Right away, I liked that the MotorcycleRow product line keeps everything organized with each individual product having its own specialty in the process of cleaning or detailing. Their products are perfect for your motorcycle, car or whatever other toy you might want to shine. I spend endless hours rolling through our central valley’s agriculture region and at the end of the day the front of my bike looks it went through a war zone with the bugs and dust. That is when I pull out the Windshield Cleaner and the Kwik Detail bottles. The

windshield cleaner is formulated so that it will not damage your windshield like normal cleaners will and it cuts through the bugs and grime with ease. Same goes for the Kwik Detail for use on hard painted surfaces and in just minutes (without the use of any water) the bike is looking clean again! Then comes Kwik Wax this product will give the paint some protection from the elements and give your motorcycle a show ready shine. All of these steps can be done in a fraction of the time that it would normally take to pull the hose out and a water bucket only to be followed by the tedious process of drying everything so you do not get any corrosion going on.

Thunder Roads MagazineÂŽ Northern California 20

Owner and Founder of MotorcycleRow, John Silva gave me advice on how to clean more efficiently...the key is to use MotorcycleRow’s Wash & Wax microfiber towels, they are very thick and heavier compared to the ones I had been using. He pointed out that it takes a lot less pressure while wiping the grime off. He was right - it made a world of difference! Another thing he pointed out was that with the thinner microfiber towels, we tend to scrub harder and that over time can start to

We have all the metal and plastic parts covered but what about your seat or saddle bags? Check out MotorcycleRow’s Leather Conditioner. This stuff is great and a little goes along way. After first using it on my motorcycle seat, the leather just came back to life plus it smells like new leather again! So now I use it on everything that I own that is leather like my old beat up office chair – now it is a thing of beauty again! Another thing I noticed was that there was not that overpowering chemical odor like other products I have used in the past! Better yet, all of the products have a nice aroma. As you can tell I am a big fan of this product and will continue to use it for years to come and not just on my motorcycle, our Thunder Roads van will be sporting a new shine, along with everything else that needs a shine!

Article and photos by Stan Hill cause that swirling-look in the paint because the dirt that is embedded in the thin towel will act more like sand paper. You can order the towels at the same time you order the cleaning products. After using them, I highly recommend that you do. For the really tough jobs like removing melted rubber from a shoe on your exhaust pipe or the bronzing from the heat, MotorcycleRow Metal Polish will do the trick or if you need to really shine (but your bikes finish has been put through it) use the High Gloss Metal Polish to remove oxidation and bring back the luster that was once there. 5th Annual Veterans Run

M

ay 29 (Santa Rosa): If there was any doubt as to how the Good Ol’ Boys MC Veterans Run turnout was going to be this year; it was quickly put to rest at 8am in the morning with the sun shining. They were setting up the stage and vendors at 6:30am on a Sunday morning to get ready for by far one of the best Veteran runs yet. Every year the Good Ol’ Boys of the North Bay support our Veterans with a huge ride (with close to 400 motorcycles and riders) and fundraiser at the Santa Rosa Vets Memorial Building with several vendors and sponsors fairing the 90 degree weather to show their support for this run. Shannon Rider set the mood with an off the hook rendition of our National Anthem, after which the GOB lead riders to the Santa Rosa Memorial cemetery.

Fellow GOB member Nicholas Tank who served in Iraq gave a heartfelt speech that only a firsthand experience from the heart can put out. Followed up by Mark Olsen doing “Taps” and the honor guard retiring the flags along with those in attendance had a chance to place flowers on graves - it was off to the Petaluma Vets building with Ron Ogden and Steve Beretta leading the way through a beautiful ride in the hills of Sonoma County. After spending some time and having a few cold refreshments, we mounted up again and headed back to the Santa Rosa Vets Memorial building where the band Road House rocked the stage and the BBQ steaks were just amazing. After everyone had a bite to eat and had a chance to purchase raffle tickets, it was time for the raffle and as always there were some great raffle

prizes. Special thanks to the Rohnert Park Safeway for helping the GOB out on the steaks and Timmons Painting for being a huge sponsor for this event. Following the stock market crash, motorcycle sales in the United States plummeted. We will revisit a few key players from previous segments, and see where they end up by the end of this devastating era in American history. The first victim of the Great Depression was Excelsior. Excelsior was operating successfully during the war, and consistently filling orders. The Super X was making the company money, and things were good. Previously purchased by the bicycle guru known as Schwinn, it seemed Excelsior would be a household name for years to come. Who doesn’t love a pretty face?? In 1932 Indian introduced skirted fenders, a long graceful chain guard, as well as a saddle tank that hid the frame…this foretold the profile of the “modern” motorcycle. In 1934 Indian chose a streamlined, automotive styling to its model line. Lightly valanced fenders were given deeper

side panels, and two-tone paint schemes became available on most models.

Postal Service servi-car

The only American motorcycle company to continue to introduce advancements during the post war years was Harley Davidson. In 1922, the new 74 cubic inch (1212 cc) V-Twin was completed. Harley introduced the “teardrop” gas tank in 1925; 1928 brought about the addition of a front brake, but notably only on the J/JD models. In 1929, the 45 cubic inch (737 cc) Flathead V-Twin was announced. The Flathead was designed to compete with the Indian 101 Scout and the Excelsior Super X…this was the “D” model, and remained in production until 1931. Indian riders referred to the “D” model as the “3 cylinder Harley” because the generator was upright and parallel to the front cylinder. The Great Depression was in full swing only a few short months after the release of the Flathead V-Twin, and with it came a dramatic drop in sales. Harley Davidson sales in the United States fell from 21,000 in 1929 to a meager 3,703 in 1933. In the face of such loss, Harley did not back down. The company instead raised a proud middle finger to the economy and waved it for all to see…unveiling a new line up for 1934 that included a Flathead engine and art deco styling. In order to survive the remainder of the depression, Harley supplemented their income by producing industrial power plants based on their motorcycle engines. They also designed and built a 3 wheeled delivery vehicle called the “Servi-car”, which incidentally remained in production until 1973. The Servi-car became a mainstay of small businesses, vendors, and delivery drivers for decades to come. As if Harley hadn’t done enough in such difficult times, they also added the 80 cubic inch (1300 cc) Flathead to their line in 1935; 1936 brought more changes to the industry with Harley’s announcement of the 61E and 61EL models. These models boasted the Knucklehead OHV engines, and by the end of the first year of production these babies had been road tested and improved upon as well. By 1937 Harley had equipped all Flatheads with the same type of dry-sump oil recirculation systems introduced on the Knucklehead OHVs. The revised 74 cubic inch V and VL models were renamed U and UL; the 45 cubic inch R model became the W, while the 80 cubic inch VH and VHL were renamed UH and UHL.

doors in 1953. Despite the hardships cast upon the United States after the First World War, Indian and Harley Davidson survived…they were the only two American motorcycle companies left standing. But why did they succeed where others did not? Their survival is due in part to having strong dealer networks, continued product use by the military, police, and postal services, as well as strong exports to Canada and Europe…combined, and these factors allowed them to weather the economic disaster that followed WWI.

September 1, 1939 brought about the start of WWII. The war in essence turns around the American economy and brings an end to the Great Depression…and with the Second World War comes yet another section of motorcycle history to uncover. I

love warm weather. Nothing quite compares to the feeling I get riding down the highway with the sun on my skin, taking in the beauty of our state. But once summer creeps in and temperatures soar…there are some things that we as bikers owe ourselves to be aware of. Just as in cold temperatures, where the risk of hypothermia is very real, summer heat brings along its own set of problems to endure. There are four types of heat disorders that we should be aware of.

FIRST IS SUNBURN. Symptoms include redness and pain. In extreme cases swelling of the skin and blisters may occur. Sunburn is generally the least invasive in a rider’s day, and easily avoidable. Wear a strong SPF sunscreen on all exposed skin while out, and reapply it frequently to keep your skin from burning. Try wearing cotton/synthetic blend long sleeve shirts, their moisture wicking fabric can actually keep you cooler than wearing short sleeves.

SECOND ON THE LIST IS HEAT CRAMPS. This may seem pretty minor as well, but if your body starts cramping up, you cannot ensure safe operation of your bike. Heat cramps are characterized by muscular pains and spasms. The best thing you can do for this is stop and stretch, massage the cramps a bit, and drink water. If the cramping is accompanied by profuse sweating, the cramps will likely reoccur.

NEXT IS HEAT EXHAUSTION. Symptoms include cool, moist, pale (or flushed) skin, heavy sweating, headache, nausea/vomiting, dizziness, and exhaustion. Heat exhaustion is due to prolonged or profuse sweating, when the body loses too much salt and water. When salt and water aren’t replaced, blood circulation diminishes and affects the heart, brain, and lungs. The best thing you can do if you start showing these symptoms is get inside somewhere that has air conditioning….and drink water. If left untreated, heat exhaustion can lead to the fourth and final heat disorder.

HEAT STROKE IS BY FAR THE MOST DANGEROUS OF THESE HEAT DISORDERS. This occurs when the body’s temperature control system stops working. Body temperatures can reach so high that brain damage and/ or death can occur if the body isn’t cooled quickly. Signs of heat stroke include hot, red, dry skin, changes in consciousness, rapid/weak pulse, rapid/shallow breathing, very high body temperature, dilated pupils, decreased blood pressure, headache, nausea/vomiting, dizziness/ weakness, and mental confusion. In this state, a rider may appear to be intoxicated. Symptoms can badly affect your ability to control your motorcycle and your reaction time to routine threats to motorcycle survival. If you or someone you’re riding with appears to be suffering from heat stroke, get them somewhere cool, provide water, and seek medical treatment immediately. When temperatures rise (above 90 degrees), the human body is busy doing everything it can to maintain 98.6 degrees inside. The heart pumps more blood through dilated circulatory vessels and sweat glands pour out liquid saturated with essential dissolved chemicals like sodium and chloride. Sweating is the body’s “go to” for cool down. Generally this is highly effective, and our bodies carry on…business as usual. Why doesn’t sweating work for us while breezing down the road? Because as good as that wind feels on a hot day, it is actually preventing the act of sweating from cooling us at all…the wind snatches the sweat from our skin before it can evaporate, essentially stopping the cooling process. So what is a diehard biker to do when the weather of the day seems to be straight out of the

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 32

depths of hell? There are a few things we can do to ensure we stay safe during the dog days of summer. First, drink lots of water (and maybe a little commercial sports drinks). And don’t wait until you feel thirsty to start. Avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks, as they increase dehydration. Dress for summer. Choose light colored clothing, and try to limit the amount of skin you leave exposed. Avoid sunburn…sunburn makes the job of heat dissipation much more difficult for your body. Choose your ride times for the coolest parts of the day if you are able. Finally, take regular breaks. Use those breaks to find some shade or air conditioning, reapply sunscreen, and down some more water…your body will thank you for it. 16th Annual California Rendezvous May 14 (Madera): The California Rendezvous has built the reputation of being a kick-ass good time. They bring out all the good stuff with a big ride-in bike show that bring out amateur and pro builders from all over California, with categories for most every style of motorcycle. Along with attracting a lot of hot bikes this event also attracts a large number of hot girls who are eager to pose with riders and their bikes. They are also there to compete in various competitions like the bikini competition or everybody’s favorite the wet t-shirt contest and a few more that get the crowd involved. The Madera Fairgrounds is filled with live music all day and when the music stopped it was time for the stereo Thump off with some of the baddest bike stereo systems around; each one going head to head to see who had the best sound as judged by the crowd. We were pleased to meet a lot of you from the southern-most region of our distribution area – thanks for stopping by our Thunder Roads NorCal booth. Out in the big parking lot there were stunt riders from Jason Pullen and his crew to include little AJ Stunts and they were joined by Robyn Diamond and a couple of her friends. They were all shredding the rubber off tires and riding wheelies in every way imaginable and that always gets the crowd going. New this year was an amateur wheelie contest so if you think you got it you might want to come out next year and give it a go. We have been saying it for years and we will say it again this one is a damn good time - so for next year put it on your calendar, get on your bike and ride on down to Madera for the California Rendezvous! THE RAZ REPORT:

Big Sur 2up Camping Tips Let’s consider weeklong camping getaway in Big Sur. What are you going to take? This list (refer to the Motorcycle Run Packing List insert) has been developed over the last [whew!] 50 years. And, in the event there is no chase vehicle, everything, exception of the drinking water and the hiking stick, gets packed on the bike. Don’t you just love the CYA warning on the luggage rack: “MAXIMUM LOAD 15 POUNDS” - well, mine has been stress tested to well over fifteen pounds - works just fine. How are you going to get there? If you are coming from north or east of San Francisco then you can get to the Pacific Coast Highway via several highways, in SF across the Golden Gate Bridge or in Half Moon Bay via Hwy 92, or at San Gregorio Beach via Hwy 84. If you are coming from further south, like San Jose then you can get to the PCH in Santa Cruz via Hwy 17. Ride on into Big Sur, and about a half a mile past the Chevron gas station, you will find the Fernwood Resort (www.fernwoodbigsur. com) on Highway 1. This resort is on the Big Sur River with a general store, restaurant, cabins, RV and tent camping, and they ARE biker friendly. What are you going to do when you get there? Now that you have a home base away from home... what to do? what to do? what to do? The campsites have fire pits (with attached grates) and there is firewood for sale - so you can cook or have a campfire or both. It’s been a long ride with an exceptional multitude of crazy cage pilots on the road, maybe you don’t feel like doing anything. You could have a cold one and park your arse on a rock by the river, or in the river, or on a float and ride the 100+ yard chute down the river. Feel like going for a walk? How about a 5 mile round trip walk on the Buzzard’s Roost trail which is claimed to be a moderate two-hour hike along Big Sur’s western edge that takes you along the river, through shady redwoods, then through a series of switchbacks among bay trees and tan oaks to the chaparralcovered top of Pfeiffer Ridge with spectacular views of the Santa Lucia Mountains to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. WARNING: although the trail is labeled “moderate” let me tell

you this, I’m 70 years old, in purdy good shape and found the trail to be difficult; there is a lot of 15 degree and steeper parts of the trail with switchbacks galore and many places where wood railroad tie steps are SERIOUSLY eroded away making for a step up of FOUR FEET (better have a good hiking stick with you). And lastly, this is not a two hour walk in the woods - better plan on leaving right after breakfast, take protein bars and at least 2 quarts of water. DANGER: there ARE buzzards in the area and if you should perish on the trail they WILL find you. When you return to camp, this would perhaps be a good time to fall into the river, or just catch a couple z’s. Or how about Pfeiffer State Beach? About a mile south of camp is a private (gated) road, Pfeiffer Ridge Road, and immediately past that is Sycamore Canyon Road which meanders down to a parking lot with a short trail to a beach like none you have seen before, including some places with purple sand! Yup, you can lay on this beach listening to the waves and soaking up the view until you are burnt to a crisp. Wanna go for a ride? A 150 year ago ride? On a horse? About 3 miles north of camp is Andrew Molera State Park where all horseback rides go to the beach - cool! Would you like to see more of the coast? Take a day ride down further south, just past Gorda is the Sand Dollar Beach, Jade Cove and the Willow Creek Beach, a favorite of mine for years; be sure to take the spur road there DOWN to the rocks by the beach!!! It’s a great photo opportunity to get next to some primitive beach (with jade rocks here and there). So there you have it, five full days, 3 in the saddle of your iron steed, 1 in the saddle of a carbon based quadrapod, 1 in your hiking boots, with plenty of time to get wet and enjoy the scenery. For your ride home, you can go back the (slower) way you came or, once you get back into the area of Monterey you can jam over Hwy 156 to Hwy 101 - and then, if you want, jam on Hwy 152 to I-5; or in Santa Cruz, jam over the hill on Hwy 17 to San Jose and you’ve got it from there. Happy trails to you. Article and photographs contributed by Russell “Raz” Holder / KNUCKLEHEADS FOREVER!

Binford’s Big Ass Grand Opening Bash

May 21 (Manteca): It was time to party as the much awaited grand opening of Binford’s Custom Cycles was here. If you had been to Binford’s old shop you knew just how small it was; I for one was amazed that he was able to do what he has done working in such a confined space.

This spring, the Binford crew made the move down the street to 1297 N. Main Street into their new digs. By the grand opening, the new place set up just beautifully with some of the recent Binford builds on display in the new spacious show room. Here you can also browse through a wide variety of parts, accessories as well as the cool Binford apparel. It must feel like a dream come true for these guys because inside the new working shop area there is an abundance of square footage for more custom builds in the future! Plus there is also a new really nice customer lounge to wait in with more space

for a future kitchen?? If that is not impressive enough outside was a huge parking lot. A parking lot large enough to accommodate a large crowd, a bike show, several vendors and a band. A band called Suicide Shift (hmmm... do you think this band might be a bunch of riders?) There was a large covered area with tables and a BBQ set up were people were grabbing some lunch....with still enough room for Jason Pullen to pull off some kick-ass stunt riding! An ultimate showman - Jason wowed the crowd with his wild antics with a local motorcycle cop who ‘gave chase’ before deciding Jason was better on one wheel than he was on two. It was all in good fun as the local PD were there with some of their equipment to support the local community. Plus there was a great turnout for BADDEST RIDE bike show with several entries in each category.

Make sure you take the time to stop by and see what’s up. The grand opening was a great time and although a little cloud burst of rain hit later in the afternoon - it did not dampen the spirits of most; and as for Jason Pullen it just made him crank it up another notch as he seemed to relish the slick wet pavement. Stay tuned to upcoming events because I have a feeling that there might be plenty more BIG ASS BASHES at Binford’s Custom Cycles in the future! Article and photos by Stan Hill

he crew at Loose Cannon Cycle Werks are an ingenious and creative bunch and will find unique ways to customize your ride to suit your build . If you take a close look at the bikes that are rolling out of this Sacramento shop, you too will be amazed at some of the innovations that they conjure up. This FXR is no different as it has been modified for a 6’7” customer. Actually 6’7” is a wild guess, I think Big Mick might be even taller than that! In order for a guy of that stature to ride his FXR comfortably like the rest of us some changes had to be made. Big Jim of Loose Cannon Cycle Werks has an eye looking for ways to make a good thing ‘just a little better’ and has a great reputation for doing just that! So keep this in mind if you want to create something like nobody else has or whether you are in need of a simple service - this shop can get it done right! Good news - if you’re in the market for a FXR - this month’s RIDE PRIDE is available for sale. Big Mick has decided to move up to an even bigger ride. Article and photos by Stan Hill

DAY RIDE:

MCARTHUR-BURNEY FALLS STATE PARK

O

n this day, the unofficial first day of summer, we celebrate by thanking a Veteran, those who served and came home and to those who gave all. On Memorial Day, Sunshine and I took the day and visited McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park (www. burney-falls.com). We have traveled many miles to visit Northern California’s fair, festivals, bike events and some great California sites. This was our first waterfall day ride.

These falls are about a 3 1/2 hour ride north from Sacramento depending how fast you chance it, but once you pull off onto Hwy 299 outside of Redding you’ll want to slow down to enjoy the ride and scenery. Heading up was a piece of cake and great weather, not so on the way home, we’ll get to that later. Pulling up to the state park, we noticed crowds of people walking up the highway and into the park, later finding out they were just too cheap to pay the $8 fee. At the entrance, the Park Ranger girl told us to pull forward and Bill will tell you where to park. Bill was a little older than most; make that - he just had a little more experience. Bill looked at us while scratching his head and said “I don’t know where to park a tricycle”. We smiled and said we don’t need much room. The falls were just about 75 feet from the parking lot, just across the entrance road. When we cross the road it took our breath away. The view was just awe inspiring as the cool mist from the 129 foot waterfall hit us in the face, but wait there’s more! There was a trail with a series of switch backs and a gradual drop of 100 feet leading to the bottom of the falls. We came across many people making the trek to and

from the falls. At the bottom a few people were taking a dip, not recommended because of the temp of the pool. These brave souls would jump in... holler and jump out. The pool was the most beautiful blue I’ve seen, and if you have ever seen my bikes and cars you know I like blue! There are three hiking trails once you get to the bottom, 1.2 miles, 2 miles and 3.2 miles. Sunshine and I took our walking shoes and took off on the shorter 1.2 mile Falls Trail around the falls. Motorcycle boots not recommended. The Falls Trail follows the river from the falls over the Rainbow Bridge and doubles back to the top of the falls over one more bridge ending at the entrance. Take at least one bottle of water per person and a camera. The hike on the Falls Trail will take about an hour. Before Sunshine and I left we hit the General Store for more drinks, ice cream and candy bars. The Information Booth was closed at the time we hit it. We loaded up and hit the road back to Redding where we plan to have dinner. Once in Redding the heat was on, but then I’ve never been in Redding when it wasn’t on! Now earlier I said I would get the trip home, the 103 Harley engine was putting out so much heat it was burning my right thigh. We had to stop twice to let the engine cool and my leg and pants cool. It was one hot Jose! We made it home before dark and before the bugs came out! Great day, great ride and great view! Ride on and keep the shiny side up. RIDE DESTINATION UPPER MIDWEST HOMECOMING

O

ur travels this month took us on a lot longer route than normal. We hadn’t seen my mother in a while, so we decided to take an extended road trip - back to Minnesota, the ‘Land of 10,000 Lakes’. Our adventure didn’t get off to a stellar start. We didn’t even get out of the state on the first day. Jumping on I80 we expected a little rain near Truckee and up over the pass, and sure enough, about 40 miles out of Truckee it started to rain. A few miles later, the hail came. Luckily it was pea size. For the next 10 miles or so it went back First Day Snow at Emigrant Gap

and forth between rain and hail. Then near Emigrant Gap, it began to snow. Pulling into the Shell station and talking to westbound travelers, we decided to call it a day (it wasn’t going to clear up). So we checked in to the Sierra Woods Lodge on Laing Road, had a nice dinner, and would go at it again the next morning. A beautiful day greeted us and we were back on I80, rolling on to Wendover, Nevada before stopping for the night. We stayed at the Peppermill Hotel and Casino. I must say, we were pretty impressed with the place. It’s very clean, the rooms are terrific and a great bargain at $68. We had to ride through a couple of thunderstorms the next day as we made our way to Rawlins, Wyoming. We tried to avoid one, but it was heading dead East and eventually we just had to go through it. Stayed at a decent Best Western (a little overpriced.) The bar was cool though. Goal for the next leg was Sturgis, South Dakota. After lunch in Gillette, Wyoming we made our way over to the nice little town of Sundance, the gateway to Devil’s Tower. We pulled up out front of the Dime Horseshoe Bar and went in to wet our whistle. This is one of those places, outside of the immediate Sturgis area, that gets cooking during the rally. The big burnout contest is one of the highlights. While hanging out in Sundance, a storm caught up with us and we rode into the Sturgis Best Western in

a pouring rain. Kinda par for the course the last few days. Breakfast was at Weimer’s Diner on Main Street the next morning. Really weird being in town with no bikes around. We walked around for a while before mounting up to continue our Eastward trek. I originally wanted to check out the Full Throttle (or what’s left of it), but had a brain fart and left town instead. Sioux Falls, South Dakota was our next stop. A real nice Best

Mom And Me

Western there and after dinner at Chili’s, we checked out the 38 Roadhouse. If you’re out this way, it’s an old train station that has been turned into a biker bar. The place was busy as a large group of riders had just finished a putt and were partying out back. The next afternoon we pulled into my mother’s driveway and had a kind of mini reunion. She’s getting up there in age and we spent a week just hanging out and getting

some things done for her. Before we knew it, it was time to head home. We had had a great time and it was hard to leave, but we needed to get back on the road. We took a Northern route home, heading up through Moorhead, Minnesota on I94, stopping for the day in Bismarck, North Dakota. In 1959, Moorhead was to be the next gig for Buddy Holly, before the chartered plane he was in crashed in a snow storm in Iowa. Richie Valens and ‘the Big Bopper’ Richardson, along with the pilot, were also killed. Waylon Jennings had given up his seat to Richardson. Across the Red River in Fargo, we happened to catch a big Bike Run at Sickie’s Garage. Good timing! The bagger was due for an oil change, so the next morning we crossed over the Missouri River and ended up at Roughrider Harley-Davidson in Mandan, North Dakota. They jumped right on it and in less than an hour we were on our way. Thanks guys!

Bike Run at Sickies ND

Red Lodge, Montana was the goal for this stretch and we checked into the Pollard Hotel in the late afternoon. It turned out to be a perfect riding day. Actually, there had been no rain since leaving Minnesota. Nice little town. We had a bite to eat in the restaurant and then kicked it in the Saving My Spot On Main St in Sturgis

lounge for a while. Since we had lost Statue Pappy more than a day and Pearl in Sturgis and a half because of the weather, there were only three days left to get back to the homestead. We had wanted to go up the Beartooth Pass and down the Chief Joseph Hwy to Cody, Wyoming but that would have left a couple of long days’ home and no time to recoup some before getting back to work. So we went around the mountain via Belfry and SR120, then took the Chief Joseph Hwy cut-off and began the climb into Cooke City. Most of this entire trip had some great scenery, but the route up through Cooke City and then through Yellowstone was the highlight. Some incredible sights are to be had, for sure. Just about as good as being up on the Beartooth. After a quick lunch at the Prospector in Cooke City, Montana - it was a beautiful putt through Yellowstone. From there we made our way to Idaho Falls, Idaho for the night. We closed out our trip with a stay in Winnemucca, Nevada and then it was on to home. All in all, nine states and 4,169 miles. FOREVER FREEDOM POKER RUN IV May 21 (Penryn): Each year the Grateful Ones Motorcycle Club hosts an event for charity called the Forever Freedom Ride and Party. The charity chosen has affected or touched them in some way. This year no charity could have been more appropriate than to help find a cure for Childhood Leukemia through the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, Greater Sacramento Chapter. Sadly, one of the Grateful Ones lost their grandchild on May 6th to Leukemia and as a result this event was dedicated in the memory of Lily. There are so many great clubs, so many great rides and so many great events within our MC community. But every year there is a ride and party that stands out and that was the Forever Freedom Ride and Party. It is not very often that you can dedicate such an event to a beautiful soul like Lily, who battled for 10 long months. The start of the poker run began with a local weather forecast was showing scattered rain. Only a mere couple of rain

drops were reported during the ride itself which did not deter the many riders that came to support the cause. The riders were treated to a special send off with one of the Grateful Ones members playing the bagpipes. The riders began the 56 mile route through the wineries in the Gold Country ending up in Colfax where the band, Cool Addiction jammed some great tunes. Each rider and partygoer were treated to a tri-tip dinner that left everyone with a full belly. The raffles prizes were a great draw and the generosity of the MC community is unmatched. The evening concluded with the $500 gift certificate to Foothill Firearms in Newcastle. The recipient of the Second Amendment raffle could use it to get any firearm or accessories of their choice. Unfortunately, the winner, Sarah Gallimore was not present but was able to answer a phone call made by the Vice President of the Grateful Ones MC and the excitement in the winner’s voice capped the evening off. We took off and jumped on Hwy 84 across the bridge to 101 North and headed one exit to get back on 84 heading west. Now it’s getting really warm, T-shirt riding weather. It was really nice riding thru the shaded twisties in the redwoods. When we reached Alice’s Restaurant there were a shit load of bikes there all makes and sizes. We love Alice’s for their one of a kind “Harley Burger”. Since we love the garlic fries and jalapeno poppers we decided to split the burger. Usually I get lucky and she donates another half of her half to me. I just love that girl! Russ Brown Attorneys had a booth set up there next to Alices’s with one of their models Julee Ross. The weather is beautiful. The curvy roads are flowing and minutes later we stop at Apple Jack’s Bar in La Honda to

say hello and check out the pool game going on. A nice stop for a cold beer for some. Continuing on the air smells fresher. Ocean! With a little breeze the green hills inviting we take in the majesty of the ride. At San Gregorio there is a General Store on the right, we turned left on Stage Road stopping to study the old Stage Stop and take a picture and then under the steel bridge we got an eyeful of the cool wet creek. Treasures of the ride. On up the hill we take in the panoramic view of the valley below. Continuing on we saw some hogs on the side of the road and had to stop and check them out. There were 3 sows sun bathing in the mud and somehow it brought back memories of my 3 ex-wives. Dropping into the small creative town of Pescadero, we make a beeline to the “Downtown Local” coffee shop. It’s the only coffee house I’ve ever been in that has a motorcycle…. in the window. Best coffee in town and with a hot loaf of artichoke garlic bread (baked fresh all day long from the market down the street) already packed we head out to Hwy 1 south left onto Bonny Doon Road right onto Martin Road that’s when we started looking for ice cream. Turned right

onto Ice Cream Grade (if you see a school you went the wrong way, turn around. My bad, I always screw that up…) which turned into Felton Empire Road which drops right into Felton. Now here’s the big difference between me and Nad, I believe in Bigfoot. Turned right on Hwy 9 and about ¾ mile down there was the proof - The Bigfoot Discovery Museum (www.bigfootdiscoveryproject.com) You have to check this out. Michael Rugg the owner who is really a cool person. He was face to face with a Bigfoot longer than I would ever want to be. They were only 6 feet from each other. Michael is also friends with Bobo on the show “Finding Bigfoot”. He was telling me there are Bigfoots in the Santa Cruz Mountains. I have personally seen a Bigfoot about 3 years ago in Oregon. Lot of people don’t like talking about it, but me I don’t give a rats ass what people think about me, I guess it’s that biker attitude that runs thru my veins. If you check this ride out drop a line to the editor and let us know what you think, and if you see my exes rolling in the mud say hello for me! Our ride was not over yet. Took Hwy 9 north… towards Boulder Creek where in fact we did find a Foster’s Freeze for ice cream cuz it’s nowhere to be found on Ice Cream Grade. She had the snickers twister and I had a cone dipped in chocolate. It was just right to end the day. Continuing north we turned right on Bear Creek Road which ran into Hwy 17 and back home. What an awesome ride! Article and photos by Dan & Nad Rogers Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 61

THE MOST FUNCTIONAL ENGLISH WORD = Well……it’s shit. That’s right.....Shit! Shit may just be the most functional word in the English language. You can smoke shit, buy shit, sell shit, lose shit, find shit, forget shit, and tell others to eat shit. Some people know their shit, while others can’t tell the difference between shit and shineola. There are lucky shits, dumb shits, and crazy shits. There is bull shit, horse shit, and chicken shit. You can throw shit, sling shit, catch shit, shoot the shit, or duck when the shit hits the fan. You can give a shit or serve shit on a shingle. You can find yourself in deep shit or be happier than a pig in shit. Some days are colder than shit, some days are hotter than shit, and some days are just plain shitty. Some music sounds like shit, things can look like shit, and there are times when you feel like shit. You can have too much shit, not enough shit, the right shit, the wrong shit or a lot of weird shit. You can carry shit, have a mountain of shit, or find yourself up shit creek without a paddle. Sometimes everything you touch turns to shit and other times you fall in a bucket of shit and come out smelling like a rose. When you stop to consider all the facts, it’s the basic building block of the English language. And remember, once you know your shit, you don’t need to know anything else!! You could pass this along, if you give a shit; or not do so if you don’t give a shit! Well, Shit, it’s time for me to go. Just wanted you to know that I do give a shit and hope you had a nice day, without a bunch of shit. But, if you happened to catch a load of shit from some shit-head, well……Shit Happens! ___________________________________________________ A man and his wife, moved back home to their beloved Tennessee, from Minnesota.

The husband had a wooden leg, and to insure it back in Minnesota would cost them $2000 per year. When they arrived in Tennessee, they went to an insurance agency to see how much it would cost to insure his wooden leg. The agent looked it up on the computer and said: “$39. even”. The husband was shocked and asked why it was so cheap here in Tennessee to insure it because it cost him $2,000 in Minnesota? The insurance agent turned his computer screen to the couple and said, ‘Well, here it is on the screen, it says: Any wooden structure, with a sprinkler system above it, is $39. You just have to know how to describe your current situation. (*Hillbillies have a creativity all their own). ___________________________________________________ Confucius DIDN’T Say ...... He goes back in for breakfast and his mother gives him a bowl of dry cereal. “How come I don’t get any eggs and bacon? Why don’t I have any milk in my cereal?” he asks. “Well,” his mother says, “I saw you kick a chicken, so you don’t get any eggs for a month. I saw you kick the pig, so you don’t get any bacon for a month either. I saw you kick the cow so for a month you aren’t getting any milk.” Just then, his father comes down for breakfast and kicks the pussy cat halfway across the kitchen. hen a financial emergency happens to you or your family, isn’t it nice to be able to go to the bank and take a withdrawal to cover your needs? Of course the question comes to be, will there be any money in the bank for you to withdraw from your account? A yes can only be answered if you have made the necessary deposits into a savings account to have enough money to withdraw in times of need. We all work so very hard for our money and the pulls of the world entice us to spend our money instead of saving some of it for a ‘rainy day’. We get caught up in the here and the now of satisfaction and throw delayed gratification out the window. We get so caught up with purchasing, we forget to put some aside just in case an emergency takes place. There is nothing so traumatizing to your emergency situation than when it actually strikes and you have no resources to fall back on. You go to the bank and there is nothing to withdraw. You go to your secret hiding place where you used to stash your change and it’s all gone. You call family, friends, and anyone you can think of to help, and they are all tapped out like you and cannot help. What will you do? Where will you go? What will happen with your situation? I think we are all in agreement that these are scary questions and something we should be contemplating and prepare for. It all starts with changing our habits and our commitments. A dollar a day equals 365 dollars by the end of the year, which does not seem like much, but when your dryer burns up or your washer breaks down, it could mean the difference of washing and drying with a new machine or using a wash board and a clothes line to dry. And if you make it 2 dollars a day, then you will save 730 dollars by year end. We can draw a similar conclusion as it relates to the relationships we are involved in. If we are not putting into our relationships on a daily basis, we may get to a point when we need to withdraw some council or just someone on an occasion, and there will be no one there. If we are always taking from the relationship

and never depositing into it, there will come a time when there is nothing inside to withdraw from. As fathers, we need to deposit into our children; time, love, hope, dreams, and courage. As we get older and long for the time for our children to spend time with us, it will all depend on how much of deposit you made into their lives when they were young. As married couples, we can see the marriages that fail are the marriages where both parties are always taking and nothing is being deposited for intimacy, time spent together, family goal setting, or leisurely fun. There will come a time when all hell is breaking loose in your marriage and if you have made the proper investments into your marriage, it will stand the ‘test of time’, no matter how crazy it gets. After 25 years of marriage, I know this to be true, as there are no short cuts to a highly impactful relationship. So it goes, when we get to the crossroads in our lives. We need to make the spiritual deposits into our lives to be able to draw on prayer in spiritual times of need. We all go through them, and it is so much more comforting to know we have made the spiritual deposits necessary for the blessing. If we don’t make spiritual deposits into our souls, we will someday go to the spiritual bank looking for a withdrawal and we will feel empty and lost. When we have made the necessary deposits, we know there will be countless reserves in our account for blessings, courage, and hope. As with our bank account deposit of a dollar a day, our spiritual account takes only a prayer a day. When you see the compounding effect, you may want to pray twice a day, and maybe even a third time for others. May your spiritual account begin today as you search for the power of prayer. John 15:7 - “But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted” “Never Ride Alone” Pastor Johnny Lujan

MY TWO CENTS: Rack and Pull Industries is excited to announce we moved to a new location! Our new location is 11325 Sunrise Gold Circle - Suite F in Rancho Cordova. The shop phone number is the same, 916-899-11188. My wife Diane will be running the front office and I will be running the shop. I have been moving and getting the building ready for business for the last two and a half weeks and missed the deadline to turn in my article to the editors of TRM. So, in the spirit of keeping My Two Cents alive, I’m posting an old article I wrote that is fitting for this time of year and it’s one of my favorites. Drink up Bitches! Terry from TRM coined that phrase one night at our dinner table. And that’s my advice to you during these hot summer months, although I’m not calling anyone a bitch, but if I did, you know who you are! When I say drink up, I mean hydrate yourself with water or Gatorade, PowerAde or Propel water, anything with electrolytes. There are very few things I like better than a shot and an ice cold beer after a long ride on a hot day to wash down the dust and bugs. We’ve all been on that ride where there was no end in sight. You’ve been in the saddle for what seems like an eternity, you can feel the heat billowing off the engine and the road feels like hot coals under your tires, you feel the sweat running down the back of your neck as you feel yourself getting sunburned and your mouth is dry and your lips are cracked. As you’re leaning into the turn, climbing upward on this endless country road something catches your eye through the rising heat waves coming off the road. It’s like a beacon of hope! It says, “Saloon, Cold Beer, Bikers Welcome” and you roll off the throttle doing everything you can not to go into a skid. Once the bike is on the kickstand you can’t get the gloves and helmet off fast enough to go in the bar and grab a beer. You swing the door open and as you walk in you say to

New digs!

the bartender “Can I get a beer?” But your throat is so dry, you sound like one of the grunting characters out of the walking dead. You walk up to the bar and grab a beer and proceed to pound it nonstop. As you’re half way done you hear that little voice saying “That’s not right, you shouldn’t do that”. You know it’s not a good idea to pound a pint of beer, but you’re so thirsty you don’t give a shit and pound it anyway. As you slam the empty glass on the bar the little voice says again, “That was messed up, you shouldn’t have done that. That was my beer”. As you’re wiping the excess beer off your beard you look over and realize that little voice you were hearing came from a little old lady sitting at the bar, and you just took and pounded her beer. Now you feel like shit because she’s so little and she looks thirstier than you did. So you try to apologize to her with sincerity and buy her a beer, but when you open your mouth to say you’re sorry all that comes out is a 15 second burp. I’ll bet I’m not the only one who has done this. I’m sure this kind of thing happens every day when the weather gets hot. This time of year temperatures soar from the mid 90’s to the triple digits, and you have to hydrate when you’re riding in extreme heat. If you don’t hydrate yourself with electrolytes you could get a real bad ass kicking headache and/or become light headed, dizzy, extremely weak and tired or even pass out. This could be tragic if you’re in third gear carving the turns. And this can happen much faster than you think, especially if you’re a little wounded because you went big the night before, and drank alcohol like you were going to the electric chair the next day. So drink up…….. Stay hydrated, stay alert and have a great ride? Thant’s my two cents. Stop in and say hi and check out the new shop! Al Cagle www.rackandpull.com

3 ANNUAL MAY-HAM 2016 RD

M

ay 14 (Pacheco): One thing I know for sure is that McGuire Harley-Davidson and Mt Diablo H.O.G host an unforgettable MayHam event! Many area HOG chapters were on hand including Mt Diablo, Folsom, Golden Gate, Iron Steed, Oakland, Fremont, Redwood Empire, Sacramento, Livermore and Monterey Bay along with the Richmond Ramblers MC. I met the H.O.G.’s back in April, I was in my van on my way camping, and stopped for gas and coffee when they all roared up to do the same, they were on their way to Carmel. I met Mary and Vince Carillo and we chatted awhile when I gave them the latest issue of Thunder Roads NorCal before resuming my travel and was longing to be on the bike as well. Little did I know I would be riding with them at their 3rd annual May-HAM event along with 187 other riders. Dan and I left Fremont early with just enough time for me to down a cup of coffee and get my chaps on so that we could pick up other riders

Merchandise Officer Helen & HOG Director Larry

along the way. By the time I got my gear off and packed away and my camera ready for the shoot - Dan was missing. I found him at the donut box diving into the delicious, fresh donuts. I GM Dave MacDonald, Dealer Mike added 2 coffees McGuire and Sale Mgr Shawn Boyd for us and we started mingling.

The theme this year was steam punk, a futuristic theme based on steam technology (I was picturing Dan losing the overalls and wearing jeans draped with chains or something.) Some of the members dressed in that era…Fantastic costumes! They looked like the Mad Max movie with beautiful girls of all ages daringly in bustiers and lace and some men in top hats and tails. It added fun and excitement to the day. We decided to take the run with the 3rd group. HOG Safety Officer Ron had a talk with the riders for safety, letting us know what to expect then we saddled up for the 58 mile - 2 hr 20 min ride with 1 stop for the games. At the stop Mary (who was manning one of the games) recognized me from the gas station and ran over to give me a big hug and to fill me in on the day. She was wearing an awesome costume and I would never have recognized her. She made me feel

I have no regrets and am very happy with the outcome. When the unthinkable happens, it’s good to have them on your side. I wouldn’t consider anyone else, neither should you.
