s hard as I try to put a positive spin on the devastating month of August in Northern California, no one was untouched by the wild fires. Although you might not have been displaced by the fires that have ravaged our state, the smoke in the air was so thick over all of NorCal that it was at times hard to breathe. And to add insult to an already bad situation - it seemed like most days the temperatures topped the 100 degree mark. This combination made it hard to want to get outside and be active.

I just can’t wrap my head around the degree of suffering that the fire victims went through with thousands of homes and businesses lost. Without a doubt, the aftermath of this will be felt by all for years to come. The one shining light through all of this was that within our small motorcycling community, we witnessed as bikers once again were leading the way to help in any way they could. Social media was alive with bikers doing what we do, organizing to bring relief right away with bottled water to the communities hardest hit and fundraisers that will help to get people some of whom lost everything but the clothing on their backs, get them immediate relief. There are still efforts on going and the needs will be great for some time to come. I am so proud and grateful to be a part of this motorcycle riding community. Our sincere thanks go out to all first responders who put their lives on the line and in some cases paid the ultimate sacrifice trying to save lives and property. Without their sacrifice and dedication there most likely would have been many more lives lost. As I write this the Mendocino and Shasta fires are at 69% and 71% contained, let’s all hope and pray that the worst of fire season is over and that we will see our beautiful NorCal blue sky open up the road ahead of us soon.

September is suicide prevention awareness month. However, once a year is not nearly enough (but it is a start) – it’s a prevention that should happen throughout the entire year. It was brought to our attention that with every suicide in the United States -there are 25 suicide attempts and that twice as many die by suicide as by homicide. It was early June when we got the news that one of our original cover models took her own life. The shocking news spread quickly. Then came the ‘why’ questions which will never be fully answered or understood. Her loved ones reached out to one another for comfort as we began the grieving process. Although each of us deal with grief differently – it is not unusual to feel guilt, shame, anger, depression and loss of productivity. Friends for Survival, Inc is a national nonprofit organization that offers help to anyone touched by a suicide tragedy. Their staff and volunteers have also been directly impacted by a suicide death. They are available to encourage healing and development skills to help cope with a loss. For more information – check out their website at www.FriendsForSurvival.org or call the Suicide Loss Helpline (800) 646-7322 There are resources and people to talk to if you feel trapped, alone, depressed, helpless, desperate, anxious, agitated and have suicidal thoughts or if you know of a loved one who is struggling. They are there to LISTEN and help you feel understood. They are there to help sort out issues and help regain strength to face life. Many have themselves been affected by suicide and want to help. Let them - make that call. 24hr Suicide Prevention Crisis Lines: (800) 273-TALK (8255) or (916) 368-3111

EVENT

MY TWO CENTS:

Hot Times! It was Saturday morning and hot as hell outside. I’m on my way to the Delta to meet my son Allen for a beer and a burger. As I pull up to Foster’s Bighorn, I see his bike parked in front and he’s sitting outside on a bench having a smoke. We greet with a hug and decide to go for a ride before we eat and have a brew. The levees are always fun to ride and we took advantage of the empty roads and we never even saw another bike or car on that ride. After a couple of hours on the hot and windy levee roads, we pull into Al the Wop’s for a ice cold beverage and some grub. If you’ve ever been to Al the Wops then you’ll know this is the place to power down a big meal with a couple of cold brews. The restaurant is cool and comfortable with air conditioning and we had a glass of water and a beer with our lunch. We had a great time just kicking back and shooting the shit and talking about the ride and we both made note that there were no bikers on the road, and we noticed there were no bikers in the bar either. That was strange. We walked outside and the heat hit us like a ton of bricks. I don’t remember it being that hot when we got there about an hour and a half earlier. We went back inside and pounded another glass of water and headed back outside to hit the road. We started laughing when we got outside and Allen said “What were we thinking? We must be crazy to ride in this heat?” We talked about how dangerous it could be riding in this heat and we gotta stay hydrated with water, not booze. We rode to the end of the street and he rode off to the left and I rode off to the right, towards home.

I made my way to the freeway, cruising at about eighty five miles an hour and I’m sweating like a slave. The sweat dripping from my eye brows is burning my good eye. I can feel the heat frying my face. My lips are dry and cracked. My mouth and throat are dirt dry and I couldn’t carry on a conversation if had to. I see a sign on an old brick building that says 113 degrees. I see heat waves dancing on the freeway pavement, which by the way, looks damp and shiny and I wonder if the heat is making the oil rise up. I remember thinking “I’m so thirsty I would commit a felony for an ice cold frosty beer right now.” I know damn well I should drink water or Gatorade instead of booze to hydrate myself, but a beer sounds so good right now! Then I realized why there was nobody on the road today. It’s too friggin hot! You’d have to be crazy or an idiot to ride in this heat. Just when I started feeling like an idiot, some guy on a sport bike with a big ass rear tire fly’s by me at about 110 mph. The guy was wearing little gym shorts, a tank top and boat shoes, oh yeah, and for safety measures a full face helmet. Bam! There’s your idiot! I knew I was just crazy! To each his own, but a little common since goes a long way. Imagine the damage a body would sustain wearing that outfit and going down at over a hundred miles an hour. Better yet, screw it, don’t think about it and certainly don’t ride in that outfit! Riding a motorcycle is fun and one of the most dangerous things to do, so protect your feet, leave the boat shoes on deck and for crying out loud, put on some pants! That’s my two cents. his month marks somewhat of a milestone for Start SR 49 us. Our first Ride DesVinton tination article appeared in CA Thunder Roads in October of 2012, so the September issue will complete six years with TRM. Wow! Where did it go? (Editor’s Note: We have appreciated your article contributions throughout the years – they have inspired us to be more adventurous like you two. The added bonus for us has been your friendship!)

With all the devastating wildfires here in California, it isn’t the best of times for getting out and riding. The smoke from these fires has been horrendous as you can see in the photos and, other than on the coast, it covers most of Nor Cal. But, smoke or not, we had made plans and off we went. Since we hadn’t done a highway ride in a while, we decided to ride the entire length of SR49 (Golden Chain Highway.) Named,

Downieville Ski Fence

of course, after the 49ers, those adventurous folks who came to California looking to strike it rich. The highway connected many of the largest gold mining towns in Northern California, mines located in such cities as Grass Valley, Coloma and Jackson.

We decided to ride it North/ South, so it was up I80 to Truckee, then north on SR89 and then on to Vinton where SR49 ends at the SR70 junction. Once there, we reversed course and made our way south. The northern section from Vinton to about Sierraville runs through a wide valley dotted with large cattle ranches. The surrounding mountains (without the smoke) offer up some very nice scenery. The first town you hit is Loyalton. There you’ll find the Golden West Saloon Restaurant. If you’re ready for a break and some grub, you can’t go wrong here. Once you reach

Lake Melones Bridge Central Sierras SR49

Lake McClure Bridge SR49 Sattley, you head into the Sierras and the twists and turns start. They continue pretty much all the way to North San Juan. Nice! Made a quick stop in Sierra City. Sharp little town. Always wanted to spend a couple of days there. Maybe next trip. We called it a day in Downieville. Our digs for the night would be the Carriage House Inn (www.downievillecarriagehouse. com). It’s right on 49 as you cross over the Jersey Bridge. Our hosts, Liz and Richard, put us in a nice room overlooking the Downie River. So, we took advantage and hung out on the deck for a while. Later, we ventured across the street to the St. Charles Place for a bite to eat and a couple of brews. If continued....

Oakhurst Sierra Sky Ranch you’re by this way and haven’t already done so, check out the Sheriff’s gallows across the Durgan Bridge (thank you Terri!) It was used only once. That was in 1885 when James O’Neill was hanged for a murder he committed the previous year. It was then dismantled and stored in the county courthouse for future use. But in 1891, the State Legislature passed a law requiring all executions be done at the state level, at either at San Quentin or Folsom. The gallows were later reconstructed and is a Historical Landmark, No. 971. The following day we were off again enjoying the mountain ride on down through Nevada City. After that, things pretty much level out. Still a lot of benders and some twists down to Placerville though. We did take a butt break at C&E Auburn to check out the new Indians. They seem to get nicer and nicer every year. (Yeah, keep dreaming dear!) After a fine chicken fried steak at Mel’s, we were back on the two-lane. The terrain is somewhat flatter as you ride through mostly hill country from outside Placerville down to San Andreas and Angels Camp. Made a quick stop at Jamestown H-D as we made our way south to the SR49 cut off at Moccasin. Personally, this is my favorite section of the Golden Chain. Especially from Coulterville to Mariposa. The climb up the Central Sierras is awesome! Lots of tight turns and exquisite

Oakhurst Sierra Sky Ranch Library views (could have been better). There are a couple of pull outs with one large one at the top where you can look back down the valley. Quite an impressive sight! Once reaching Oakhurst, our Highway 49 ride was complete. Approximately 315 miles of great riding. Looking back, I wonder just how many turns there are? Well, our trip wasn’t quite over yet. We skipped up SR41 about four miles and checked into the Sierra Sky Ranch (www.sierraskyranch.com) . We’d hang out there for a couple of days. A very nice place with a cozy rustic atmosphere. Because of the fires closing Yosemite, we just about had the place to ourselves. A short trip down to North Fork was still on the agenda. We would ride down one side of Bass Lake and up on the other. Since it was about noonish the next day when we left the ranch, we stopped at La Cabana in Bass Lake for lunch. A pleasant mom and pop Mexican restaurant. Making our way to North Fork, we checked out the town a little and ended up at the Buckhorn Saloon. An old biker dive bar that looks like it could be a fun place to hang out on the weekends. So, after the long day before, the wooded cruise around the lake was a perfect day ride. We had a relaxing evening that night and headed home the next day. Granddaughter’s birthday! FAN ASSISTED OIL COOLER

BORN FREE 10

June 22-24 (Silverado): We were off to Born Free in Orange County to see for ourselves what all the hubbub was about for this event. If you love old choppers bikes and the old 70’s styles then you would really enjoy this one. We tagged along with Carlo and Emma from C&E Auburn Indian and V-Twin, magazine contributors Gary and Mary and Tracy and Billie (aka Billie the Kid Photography) who were our tour guides having been to this event last year.

For us, this event was a breath of fresh air with a totally different vibe going on. We really got a kick out of all the girls and guys in their mid 20’s dressed up just like we did back in the 70’s. Bell bottoms, jumpsuits, denim jackets with the sleeves cut off to make their (cuts). It defiantly felt like we had walked into a time warp with all of these beautiful older bikes - some totally custom pieces of art while others were restored to like new condition. Yet others looked as if they had never been so much as wiped down since 1972. You name it - you could probably find it here! Now this is no small event as you could seriously count the attendees in the thousands with a general admission price at $15 a day. There were bands playing, beer flowing and lots of shade to ward off the sun. I do have to say as far as events go this one had more motorcycle related vendors than any California show we had been to, that was kind of nice to see so many small fabricators or parts builders all Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 12

in one place. Our hotel was close to the venue and we had a blast with our friends cooling off in the pool, having a couple drinks and some great meals and conversations. If you plan on going to this event next year - make sure to include a trip to Cooks Corner on Friday for their most impressive bike show!! Oh hell - the bikes out in the parking lot were not too bad either! Good times Lately, we keep hearing that the younger generation is just not interested in motorcycling like the generations before them. Let me tell you that one look at this show’s crowd made me believe that fear is completely unfounded. For some of them, their interests might be a bit different but they still show a lot of love for the bikes. The truth is continued....

that a lot of them reminded me of myself when I was in my early twenties. Doing what we had to, scrounging up what we needed - just so we could keep our two wheels on the road. Society has changed a lot since the 60’s and 70’s, but some things will probably never change. Article and photos by Stan and Terri Hill. Additional photos by Billie The Kid Photography

SIERRA STAKE OUT 2 August 3-5 (Emigrant Gap): If you like old school choppers, beer, friends and some awesome riding in the sierras than this event is where it’s at. A three day event at the Cisco Grove Campground up Highway 80. The event was sponsored by Lowbrow, Biltwell, Babes Ride Out, S&S Performance, 805 Beer, Sailor Jerry, and many others. After arriving, the evening kicked off with some great along with good and bad karaoke. Lines began forming and I asked what was the lines for - unbeknownst to me, there was FREE 805 Beer and Sailor Jerry! I double dipped the lines quite often. With the wildfires going on in NorCal, there was some smoke but not enough to choke you. After waking and getting some breakfast down to cure the night before, everyone was encouraged to ride as they had multiple routes, but you could travel anywhere, one place in particular was the Donner Pass Memorial in Truckee where the ill-fated Donner Party tried to take an unknown short cut which resulted in a bad way. After returning from the riding there was a nice cool river to cool down right next to the event. Later in the day was the Lowbrow Bike Show. I had an extra ticket that I sold to Brian from Tahoe for a 5th of Fireball... he showed up on a 1962 Pan which won the contest with some other classes. The night faded into some bands playing throughout the night - Shelby Cobra and Everyday Outlaw. The next morning was getting breakfast, bike blessing and on your way, great time and hope to see ya all there next year! Article and photos contributed by Earl Bundy

ide-On Motorcycles in Vallejo is where we found this little beast of a machine. Ride-On is a great place to get any type of service done on your ride or to have it decked out just the way you want. What you might not know is that they also search out and have a big inventory of some best used bikes for sale (www.ride-onmotorcycles.com). You never know - your new ride might just be there waiting for you! Along with used motorcycles, they also have parts and accessories to keep you rolling in style. But the main reason we are here is to share this sweet FXR that was custom built right here in Vallejo. It just has that “C’mon - I wanna RIDE” look about it. TRANSFERRING IMAGES - PART 2 In the last issue, we were discussing various methods of transferring images to a painted surface. As you recall, included were light projectors, digital projectors, and special papers such as Saral. Enclosing this topic, painters have been dealing with this problem for centuries. One of the earliest techniques still used today are pounce patterns.

These patterns are created with a tool called a pounce wheel. It is a simple design consisting of a pencil like shaft with a small wheel at its end point. This wheel has a multitude of spur points around its diameter (much like a cowboy spur). The general procedure is, once the image is drawn on a paper, place a thin piece of cardboard under the drawing. You then trace the design with your pounce wheel creating holes all along the lines. With a piece of dry sandpaper you lightly scuff the backside of your paper to rid the left over paper tabs. This leaves a very clean surface. This prepared image is then taped to the surface using a pounce bag (a thin sock filled with chalk like powder). Pounce your design which will leave an outline of your image. If you are doing left and right images, simply turn your paper over for the mirror side. FYI this is exactly how Michelangelo prepped the artwork for the Sistine Chapel. Like most everything in our lives, technology produced a digital version. The only one I am aware of is made by FMS. It is referred to as FMS/MCMAHAN electro pounce. This version leaves clean holes with no back sanding necessary. Various sizes of holes can be produced by varying the voltage. You can pounce one sheet of paper or many. The cool part is you use a pencil like device. The not so cool part is the cost. The cost of a FMS machine run at about $1,000. Or you can purchase a mechanical pounce wheel and pounce bag for about $20 (hmmm??). These products can be purchased at major art stores or sign supply outlets. CAMP KOMRATTO 11 July 13-15 (Middletown): The GOB (Good Ol Boys) MC of Santa Rosa put on some of the best fundraisers in the North Bay. And what started out as a little get together in memory of Dave Komro and Larry Ratto has turned into a great memory and so much fun at Camp Komratto for eleven years now. It is three days of camping and music as well as adult games and BBQ. This year was not to disappoint, on Friday the 13th there were games and music by Aqua Nett who rocked the stage and had everyone dancing and having a good time. Saturday started with bike

games and the Tug of War between the GOB and the Freedom Riders which turned out to be a battle this year. We then went to the bike show, won by John Lago and his beautiful Road King. The Miss Komratto contest had some stellar competition this year with Brittany crowned as Miss Komratto 2018. After a little BBQ put on by fellow clampers everyone settled in for the music with Aerorocksmith hitting the stage followed by Double Barrel Boys, Diversity of One and then with the Fryed Brothers closing the night out. This year, I had 3 Komratto virgins in my camp and they are already wanting to know about next year’s event! If you haven’t been yet - you are truly missing out! Make sure you check out the website at www.campkomratto. com to grab one of their calendars - all proceeds will go to local sports and music in Sonoma County. 8TH ANNUAL

FUGAWI RUN July 21 (McKinleyville): This annual Family MC Humboldt event raises funds for the families of injured and fallen Brothers and Sisters. At this year’s event, we travelled into Del Norte County to the Smith River and to the favorite camping and swimming spot of “Dirty Dave” Davis, a beloved member of the biker community not just in Humboldt County, also in locations far and wide. There we said farewell as we spread his ashes. Members of UBNC, MOB, Fog Dogs, Old Coots on Scoots, Ramblers and Jus Brothers, to name a few, showed up to honor the fallen.

WESTERN FLAT TRACK SANTA ROSA SHORT TRACK RACES

June 30 (Santa Rosa): Western Flat Track came to the Chris Beck Arena at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds for the 3rd race in their 2018 Series. Due to the last minute cancellation of the Humboldt Half Mile, I decided to attend the Santa Rosa races as they were an alternative to the cancelled event in Ferndale. Race action was hot and heavy and I was glad I had come. Racing bike classes ranged from 65cc to Hooligan 750cc plus Harleys and an Indian.

Throughout the day, racers practiced and got a feel for the track and the action which was especially important as it was a very hot day. The first series of races started at 5pm, then a

short break and racing resumed again at 6:30pm. The crowd of spectators quickly grew and the races got off to a good start. The pace of the competition progressed with the last race just finishing before the 10pm noise curfew. Western Flat Track put on a well run event and provided a great venue for the action that comes with racing in tight groups all leaning sideways and kicking up lots of dirt. Check out www.westernflattrack.com for more information and a list of their race schedule. You will not be disappointed. Article and photos contributed by Bobby “G” Godwin

W

ith the devastation of wildfires throughout our northern state, I have decided to share some valuable information with the readers of Thunder Roads Magazine NorCal. As we all know, Bikers are some of the most philanthropic demographic in the world. No matter what part of the world you go to, or what calendar month you look at, Bikers are always doing some sort of charity work to give back. The wildfires of the state are no different, and I can imagine there are many of you that have an overabundance of items you would like to donate or send their way. Blankets, sheets, jackets, shoes, toys, food, etc, are naturally things we can donate or purchase new and send to the victims. Here is the issue; they receive too much “stuff” when a natural disaster hits. The more I investigate the recent fires and ways to help, the more I find articles that read, “If you really want to help the victims, please don’t send any more stuff”. Curiously, I started investigating the reasons why. It seems there is always such a huge outpouring at the beginning, that when it is all said and done, and all the needs are met, disaster relief teams are stuck with loads and loads of things that need to be hauled away to the local dumps. In 2014, after the Boles fire, 2 semi-trailers full of donated items were hauled off to the dump. The Valley Fire of 2015 in the Napa area was even worse, where 18 semi-trailers full of stuff were hauled off to the local refuge facility. Now, we all have our points of view on this, and wonder why they wouldn’t just donate it to other charitable causes. One is timing, and the other is that a majority of items they receive are really not worth giving to help others as they list things like chandeliers, prom dresses, weight loss drinks, broken appliances and dirty or soiled clothing. The other is that at the beginning, there are immediate needs, and the longer donations come in, the worse the receivables are, so they are stock piled and later sent to the dump, which results in extra work, expenses and a waste of valuable resources that could be used to help families. I know many of us still want to help and make a difference, so I have provided some

links to places you can give. They suggest the best thing we could give is donated funds, gift cards and money they could use to help with a families immediate needs. These are only suggestions, as I am sure there are hundreds more. The Red Cross is accepting cash donations online at www.redcross.org/donate/donation or by calling 800-RED-CROSS. You also can text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation, billed to your wireless carrier fund. United Way of Northern California is accepting donations for its Shasta County Fire Relief Fund. Donate online at app.mobilecause.com/f/1xpb/n or by texting CARRFIRE to 91999, which will text you back options for giving. Checks can be mailed to the United Way of Northern California, 2280 Benton Drive, Building B, Redding, CA 96003. Shasta Regional Community Foundation is accepting donations for its Community Disaster Relief Fund at www.shastarcf.org/funds/cdrf. Checks can be mailed to the Shasta Regional Community Foundation, 1335 Arboretum Drive, Suite B, Redding, CA 96003. Mark checks “CDRF.” Tri Counties Bank has pledged an initial $25,000 to a Carr Fire Fund 2018 in a verified GoFundMe campaign to help those affected by the fires. Read more about it at www.gofundme.com/tcb-2018-carr-fire-fund. Mathew 25:35 I was hungry and you fed me. I was thirsty and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger and you invited me into your home. I was naked and you gave me clothing. I was sick and you cared for me. I was in prison and you visited me. Mathew 25:40 And the King will say “I tell you the truth, when you did it for one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me”. “Never Ride Alone” Pastor Johnny Lujan – Thunder Road Church

Antique Motorcycle Club of America 18th Annual Fort Sutter Chapter National Motorcycle Show & Swap Meet

The restored ES-2 Norton Café racer was a big hit with the attendees due to its long history of racing involvement. The British Norton Motorcycle Company began manufacturing motorcycles in 1902 with bought-in engines. In 1908, a Norton-built engine was added to the enlarging lineup.

members nationwide.

The Vincent 998cc Black Shadow was built from 1948 until 1955 in England. The Black Shadow has a top speed of 125 mph, giving them the reputation of building “the world’s fastest motorcycle”.

June 15-16 (Dixon): The ‘Antique Motorcycle Show’ is a great way to keep in touch with like-minded people. This event hosted by AMCA Fort Sutter Chapter, always has something you have not seen before. My favorites are the military bikes. My mind instantly thinks about how these bikes were used during war. The history is enlightening and touches my soul. One of the most unusual vehicles was a double engine 1,994cc, 100hp Ariel Square Four, when fired up it sounds like a drag boat. It was awesome! There is plenty of shade and if you need that certain something for your bike, you will find it here at the swap meet. If you’ve been pondering a visit to this show, ponder no more, you will enjoy it! The AMCA was founded to preserve, restore, and exhibit motorcycles that are 35 years or older. The AMCA was founded in 1954 (Fort Sutter Chapter in 1982) and now has more than 11,000

The Harley-Davidson Panhead, so nicknamed because the rocker covers resembled cooking pans, was built from 1948 to 1965. The engine is a two-cylinder, four-valve, pushrod V-twin, made in 61 and 74 cubic inch.

This beautiful Super Scout futuristic one piece gas tank and fender-unit was built by the Indian Co. in 1968.

This is a very rare water-cooled 1969 Scott 600cc Flying Squirrel. It had been painstakingly restored and is one of only two assembled by the factory in 1969. They were only built to order for the most discriminating enthusiast.

The Ariel Square Four is a very unique motorcycle, with a total production of only 1,211, was produced by the ‎Ariel Motors Ltd Company in Bournbrook, England, between 1925 and 1952. The very distinctive Square Four was considered one of the most glamorous and best known British motorcycles of all time.

The Knucklehead engine was the third basic type of V-Twin engine used by Harley-Davidson, replacing the Flathead-engine VL model in 1936 as HD’s top-of-the-line model. They were manufactured until 1947 and then replaced by the Panhead in 1948. The knucklehead was named because of the distinct shape of the rocker boxes. It is a two-cylinder, 45 degree, pushrod actuated overhead valve V-twin engine with two valves per cylinder. These models were originally referred to as OHVs by enthusiasts and in Harley’s official literature, the nickname arose from the California chopper culture of the 60s.

Nor Cal Cycle-Swap

A

ugust 5 (Sacramento): If you have ever built a motorcycle, wanted to build one, needed a part, or have a wish list for one, NorCal Cycle Swap is the place to be. Whole motorcycles, along with parts and pieces were laid out on blankets, tents and open trailers and everything was up for sale. It was row after row of some of the coolest stuff for motorcycles that could be found. As I rode in on my 1991 Harley Softail Custom Trike, I handed the attendant my $10 admission fee, only to find out that lady riders were free. That worked for me. I pulled into an already over crowded parking area for motorcycles only. Included in the day’s events was a ride-in bike show, with awards to the winners. If you missed it this year, NorCal Cycle Swap meet will be back in November! Thunder Roads Event Calendar will keep you posted on this event along with other happenings in the Northern California area! A husband and wife were sitting watching a TV program about psychology which was explaining the phenomenon of “mixed emotions”. The husband turned to his wife and said, “That is an absolute bunch of crap. I bet you can’t tell me one thing that will make me happy and sad at the exact same time. She said: “Out of all your friends, you have the biggest penis.” -------------------------------------------------------------A married couple is driving down the interstate doing 55 mph. The husband is behind the wheel. His wife looks over at him and says, “Honey, I know we’ve been married for 15 years, but, I want a divorce.” The husband says nothing but slowly increases speed to 60 mph. She then says, “I don’t want you to try to talk me out of it, because I’ve been having an affair with your best friend, and he’s a much better lover than you.” Again the husband stays quiet and just speeds up as his anger increases. She says, “I want the house.” Again the husband speeds up, and now is doing 70 mph. She says, “I want the kids, too.” The husband just keeps driving faster, and faster, now he’s up to 80 mph. She says, “I want the car, the checking account, and all the credit cards, too.” The husband slowly starts to veer toward a bridge overpass piling, as she says, “Is there anything you want?” The husband says, “No, I’ve got everything I need.” She smirked and said, “Really, what’s that?” The husband replies just before they hit the wall at 90 mph, “I’ve got the airbag!” -------------------------------------------------------------The kids filed into class Monday morning. They were all very excited. Their weekend assignment was to sell something, then give a talk on salesmanship. Little Sally led off. “I sold Girl Scout cookies and I made $30” she said proudly, “My sales approach was to appeal to the customer’s civil spirit and I credit that approach for my obvious success.” “Very good”, said the teacher. Little Debbie was next. “I sold magazines” she said, “I made $45 and I explained to everyone that magazines would keep them up on current events.” “Very good, Debbie”, said the teacher. Eventually, it was Little Johnny’s turn. The teacher held her breath. Little Johnny walked to the front of the classroom and dumped a box full of cash on the teacher’s desk. Proudly he boasted “$2,467. ”$2,467!” cried the teacher, “What in the world were you selling?” ”‘Toothbrushes”, said Little Johnny. “How could

you possibly sell enough tooth brushes to make that much money?” “Well, I found the busiest corner in town”, said Little Johnny, “I set up a Dip & Chip stand and I gave everybody who walked by a free sample. “They all said the same thing, “Hey, this tastes like dog chit!” Then I would say, “It is dog chit. Hey, wanna’ buy a toothbrush? --------------------------------------------------------------While examining his lady patient, the doctor tells her: “Your heart, lungs, pulse & BP are fine. Now let me see that cute little thing which gets you ladies into all kinds of trouble.” The woman a tad turned on by the young doctor starts quickly taking off her slacks and panties and is standing nude from the waist down. The Doctor turned around, stopping her and said: “No! No! Please put on your clothes. I meant for you to just show me your tongue.” --------------------------------------------------------------A Steel Cowboy’s Tombstone: The Headstone of Russell J. Larsen in the Logan City Cemetery, Logan, Utah . I wonder if he died knowing he won the ‘Coolest Headstone’ contest? His five rules for a happy life are at the bottom in on his headstone Five Rules For Men To Follow For A Happy Life: 1. It’s important to have a woman who helps out at home, cooks several times a week, keeps a clean home and has a steady job. 2. It’s important to have a woman who can make you laugh and laughs at herself too. 3. It’s important to have a woman who you can trust, and doesn’t lie to you, and loyal. 4. It’s important to have a woman who is a bit of a wildcat in bed and actually enjoys sex. 5. It’s very, very important that these four women do not know each other or you most assuredly will end up dead like me. --------------------------------------------------------------My wife was screaming at me: “Leave!! Get out of this house!” she ordered. I don’t want to ever see your face again!”. As I was walking out the door she yelled, “I hope you die a slow and painful death!” So I turned around and replied “So, now you want me to stay?”

BIKER BAND REVUE:

moonshine bandits I

began the process of trying to contact Moonshine Bandits to secure an interview with the famous Tex and Bird. After many failed attempts and dead ends, I went to the Moonshine Bandits Facebook page and took a chance. Much to my surprise, I received a message back from Tex himself. They agreed to the interview, and imaging of Moonshine Bandits during their upcoming performance at The Ace of Spades in Sacramento. Their assistant Ana, messaged me the following day letting me know that there would be media and backstage passes waiting for me when I arrived. The hospitality I received from Tex, Bird and Ana was real. I felt like family even before I met the Moonshine Bandits! Tex and Bird are serious about their code. They are real. TALEAH - Can you comment on how Shinerfest started, along with a short re-cap on Shinerfest 2017 and a little about what to expect at this year’s Shinerfest 2018. TEX & BIRD - We wanted to give our fans, whom we consider family, a festival that they can call their own. Shiner Nation loves all genres of music as well as all forms of entertainment. Shinerfest has zero boundaries when it comes to having a kickass time. It’s a lifestyle festival built for hard working blue collar folks that want to escape their job or stress with having a good time being amongst good damn people. TALEAH - How many are you expecting to this year’s Shinerfest? TEX & BIRD - Thousands. We are still in the building stages but every year we have doubled attendance. We are growing rapidly, faster than most festivals that are built from the ground up TALEAH - With Shinerfest 2018 just around the corner, can you comment on MSB’s personal anticipation of this year’s event? TEX & BIRD - This is the only festival where we are easily accessible to hang and just be part of the crowd. We are fans of the acts that are booked at Shinerfest, so we like to be spectators as well. We also like to be involved with the Shiner Olympics and other wild shit that goes on. We have a special bond with the Shinerfest attendees. I think everyone from last year’s Shinerfest would attest to that when we went campsite to campsite with a couple hundred fans Shiner caroling. TALEAH - The music line-up for this year’s Shinerfest is

off the hook. With that many bands performing, how much stage time does MSB’s have? TEX & BIRD - We do 90 minutes of mayhem. There will be special guests on our set. It’s bonkers. We will even pull people from the crowd to sing on stage with us. We will probably do some songs off the new album as well. We let loose at Shinerfest. We will probably be partying, skip the set list and even screw up a few lyrics. We encourage everyone to come out to Shinerfest. This year Shinerfest is only 70 miles from Sacramento. We have Bubba Sparxxx performing and hosting a Ms New Booty Contest! We have The Ska Reggae legends, Long Beach Dub Allstars rocking (if you love Sublime then you will love them). We got Big Smo, wild and crazy Metalachi, Big B, and a ton more. Plus, this year we have world famous DJ Soulman hosting and playing songs in between the sets so the party is gonna be high energy. TALEAH - The soon to be released CD - Gold Rush, is causing quite a commotion among your 798K + fans on Facebook. Reading some of the comments, there’s a common thread woven through each one... family. MSB’s music, based on real life journeys, goes deep into the heart and souls of the fans. They relate and feel safe enough to tell you their journey as well. If you could reply with one comment to all, what would you write? TEX & BIRD - One comment would be. Loyalty. TALEAH - Do you have a release date yet? TEX & BIRD - Tentatively October 2018 - All the recording is done. We flew to Nashville for one week, then we flew to Oregon for the second half of recording. It’s about 85% done. It’s so bad ass because we went back and took something from all of our old and new albums. It’s raw. It’s real. It’s a fun album. TALEAH - The recent press release for Gold Rush stated “and the people we have met” are you saying that collectively or is there someone specific that you just had to write a song about. TEX & BIRD - This album is for the people. We name dropped tons of actual fans that have been to our shows or shared a special experience with us. This album has a lot of character and personality to it. This album is real. This album is us. You might even be mentioned in a song - so tune in. TALEAH - If Gold Rush hasn’t been released by Shinerfest are you planning on adding to your set-list any of the songs not yet released?

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 52

TEX & BIRD - Absolutely, we are even considering making Shinerfest our Official Album Release Party. The Gold Rush is a movement and it’s about the journey. TALEAH - With eleven successful CD’s and number twelve soon to be released, coupled with touring dates, studio time, CD signings and other commitments. How do you manage to keep it all in perspective? TEX & BIRD - First off, it’s refreshing that ya’ll did your homework. I appreciate an interview with unique questions built from research. Thank you for that. It’s hard for people to really digest how much free time we actually have. Imagine 100+ live shows annually, the travel by flights or drives in between, as well as photo shoots, appearances, volunteering time for our Nonprofit for our Troops overseas and other engagements. Every ounce of our off time is dedicated to family. Our families deserve that. So it’s very common that we don’t answer phones when we are home or respond to private messages on social media. We turn down a lot of cool invitations on our off time, but that’s because family comes first. People always ask us if we wanna come ride bikes with them and our response is, Naw we plan to sit at home, BBQ, spend time with the family and kiss our ol’ ladies ass. TALEAH - The code you live by....Moonshine Bandits have taken the fans with them on every step of their journey, welcoming them into the family of Shiners. This alone has touched the lives of a diverse group of fans, young and old. MSB’s music speaks to them on a personal level. Can you share a little bit of the code you live by and the principles that has shaped your lifestyle? TEX & BIRD - Our code is Family. America. Friends. Living life with No Regrets. Passion. Working hard and celebrating every step of the way. Meeting people along a wild journey and turning those people you meet into family. Not all family is by blood. This is the story of two underdogs from a small town that gave the middle finger to anyone in the industry that doubted them. The suits and ties still can’t figure out how we did it. We built a family world wide. I wrapped up the interview with images, pleased that I had met such a great couple guys and great performers. So pleased in fact that I went to their website and signed up to be a Shiner! You should be a Shiner too! Article and photos contributed by Taleah Ebey / T3 Design Studios
