APPY NEW YEAR! Now that 2018 is in the review mirror, it is time to re-focus on all the good we can do and fun we will have doing it in 2019. I have never been much for New Year’s resolutions per se; rather I find myself re-focusing on different areas in my life that I feel need improvement and try to adjust to that throughout the year. I like to think of it as a more fluid and flexible way of approaching the same thing. For example, if I look in the mirror or step on the scale to find that I am back sliding - I will kick it back into gear to get in better shape. I will watch what I eat and drink and re-focus on the gym or other physical activities. But that is just me! A lot of people have great success with resolutions so however you like to approach it - do what works for you and enjoy the process. Enjoying the process has to be the take home lesson for us in 2018. We tried to make sure that we took the time to have more fun as we went through our daily tasks. That was a HUGE revelation for us! It is so easy to get caught up in life’s stressful situations that we sometimes forget to enjoy the process or the simple things in life. As we get older, it has become much clearer just how important it is to carve out the time we need to do the things that make us the happiest. So I guess for me if I were to have a resolution for 2019 that would be it, to get better at enjoying the little things in our life. We hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and were able to spend time with the people that you care about along the way. Terri and I have been enjoying the couple of weeks that we get during this time of year to decompress - take a breath and gear up to start the fast pace again which kicks off with the 2019 Easyriders Bike Show Tour coming up on January 12th at the Sacramento Convention Center. We will once again have our booth set up so come by and say hi and make sure to get a signed copy of our 2019 Thunder Roads Calendar that is sponsored by Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys. We think it is our best one yet - so don’t miss out! We will also have some of our past issues of this magazine in case you missed something throughout the year you will be able to catch up then. We are looking forward to seeing you all there.

Morro Bay
N of SR 46
RIDE DESTINATION:
Atascadero - San Simeon - Morro Bay – Los Osos
T
hings didn’t go as planned this month for our “Ride” destination. With babysitting, family events and other commitments, we generally have only a narrow window each month to get out of town. As it turned out this time around, a big storm rolled in and it was pouring rain the day we needed to depart. Well, we weren’t about to fight wind and rain for a five-hour trip down to Morro Bay, so we caged it. In the words of Col Kurtz, “the horror, the horror!” Well… I guess it wasn’t THAT bad. We didn’t change any of our itinerary though and drove on down I5 to the SR41 cutoff. SR 41 West is similar to SR 58 West. A nice valley ride through beautiful golden hills (fall) with some twisty sections sprinkled in now and then. The wind and rain had subsided somewhat by the time we pulled into Atascadero. The last time we were there - we saw a Jamey Johnson concert at the Pozo Saloon. As before, our digs for the night would be the Carlton Hotel (www.thecarlton.com) Newly renovated, it is quite nice and offers fairly reasonable weekday rates. You don’t have to go far to find dinner either. The Nautical Cowboy is right downstairs. Full bar and a one- man band on most nights. Need to walk off that dinner? The Sunken Gardens are just a block up the street. Great place for a nice leisurely stroll.
Morro Bay. A small ‘mom and pop’ place with an excellent breakfast. On our way out of town, we checked out the Faces of Freedom Veteran’s Memorial. Very impressive! It is reminiscent of the “wall” in DC. Dedicated on Veterans Day in 2008, it honors those from the area that gave all for their brothers. It was too early to check in when we reached Morro Bay, so we turned north on PCH and looked for Old Creek Road in Cayucos. Cayucos is a quaint little coastal town just up the road. It’s known for its annual Sea Glass Festival (www. cayucosseaglass.com) Glass blowers from all over the world come to display their unique creations. Food, music and fun! The next festival will take place March 8-10, 2019. Old Creek Road is split into two disparate sections by SR46. The southern section is a well paved two-laner that travels through the hilly hinterland. It would make a nice scenic putt. The section north of 46 (Santa Creek Road) is a no center line patchwork of a road. Twists and turns, ups and downs. Personally, I like this kind of road. Sometimes, nice easy cruising gets a little boring. After a rain during the fall months, the only thing you need to watch out for is the shady spots – it can be wet and leafy.
Next day, after a little morning rain, we walked over to the Central Coast Café for breakfast before heading to

Snuggling Elephant Seals in San Simeon Eventually, you will come out again on Highway 1 in Cambria. We continued north to San Simeon to check out the breeding grounds of the Elephant Seal. Our granddaughter loves seals, so we thought we would send her some pictures. There were hundreds of seals lying on the beach, basically hibernating. They return every November to San Simeon from Alaska. The seals will sleep for a month or so. Then around the first of the year, they become very active, with the males fighting for dominance of their section of the beach (the Beachmasters) By this time there will be about 2,0002,500 seals in the area.
Spooners Cove in Los Osos
After mating season is over, they will return to Alaska where the females will deliver their pups. These seals get their names from, not only their size, but from the elongated snout they get as they grow older. We thought about taking a tour of Hearst Castle, but the next tour didn’t get started for over an hour, so we passed this time around, but maybe on the next trip.

Back in Morro Bay, the Best Western San Marcos would be our home for the night. This particular stay was on Best Western, as we had accumulated enough points for a freebie. Yay! If you ever stay here, make sure you request a bay view room on the second or third floor. Really nice view. Down the street you will find plenty of places to shop and eat at the wharf - the Dutchman, Rose’s Café and many others. We had a hankering for oysters though, so we found our way back to Cambria and had dinner at the Sea Chest Oyster Bar. It’s right across the street from Moonstone Beach. A great atmosphere and a wide variety of fresh seafood on the menu. Not just oysters. The next day we took a day trip down to the Montana de Oro State Park. Just a short shot down PCH to Los Osos, then on to Pecho Valley Road. It’s a beautiful drive along the coast. The ocean air mixed with the smell of eucalyptus, makes this scenic drive all the better. Definitely stop at Spooner’s Cove. Next time through, when the weather is a little warmer, we are going to have a picnic there. Well, that pretty much covers it for this month. Hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, and are off to a great New Year’s beginning. Until next time… Article and photos contributed by Chuck and Cindy Loseth

Nexx SX.60 Eagle Rider Helmet
t has been eleven years since I have had a new helmet. Admittedly, I suppose that one could say that I tend to be pretty hard on my helmet. On occasion, I have been known to have dropped it or not to have it secured when Stan moves the motorcycle. Thankfully, it is not been from the purpose of having one strapped to your head in the first place. This summer Nexx North America sent us the SX.60 Eagle Rider helmet from their Urban Collection to do a product review. Upon opening the box, I noticed that it had all of the components that I was looking for in a replacement helmet – it was lightweight and had an open-face. I personally like to wear an open face helmet because I get overheated and I tend to feel claustrophobic in a full-face helmet during the summer. The helmet’s exterior graphics has a cool Eagle feather Born To Ride design on an advanced thermo resin ¾ shell - the texture has unique feel in comparison to the glossy finished helmets on the market. Plus the Eagle Rider helmet comes with a soft anti-sweat and anti-allergic inner fabric lining that is removable and washable which is a bonus during the sweltering summer months. I really like that this helmet comes with a ‘snap on’ sun visor – the snaps on the Nexx SX.60 allows the sun visor to be interchangeable with either a tinted or clear bubble
face screen. Another bonus was the quick release micro metric buckle chin strap, I liked that is soft and comfortable under my chin and was easy to manage with gloves on. So, if you’re in the market for a new helmet, be sure to check out the different DOT approved styles available at www. nexxnorthamerica.com and to find a dealer near you! B I KE GIVEAWAY
AND THE WINNER IS… Every year, Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys honor their loyal BAM members by giving away a brand new top-of-the-line motorcycle. This year, Gary Twitty & Family won the candy red 2018 Harley Davidson Dyna Street Bob, and unbeknownst to us, received a lot more than a bike. Gary has been riding for years now, but it wasn’t until his son’s recent diagnosis with terminal cancer that his family got into riding as well. The freedom of the open road, cleansing fresh air, and roar of an engine help to ease the pain and uncertainty of having cancer. “On our first trip together, we went to Las Vegas. We went to the Russ Brown booth and I convinced my sons that they needed to be [BAM] members. It’s a good group that will help you out and a way you can also help out other riders. So they signed up and I renewed my card,” Gary explains. “Then a couple weeks ago, sitting at home watching football, I got this phone call from Dave Moore telling me I won the motorcycle from the drawing. I just couldn’t believe it!” Gary personally thanked Chuck & Wendy Koro of Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys for winning the bike. “At a time that our family has dealt with so much, this has really uplifted us. We are all going to have so much joy getting on that bike and riding!” Winning the giveaway bike is just one of the benefits of signing up for Russ Brown’s BAM program! If You Can See What I Can See … You Might Be Riding On The Back Of A Harley Nevada County Toy Run
F
Cyndee, Curt & Santa
our years ago, Curt and I participated in our first Nevada County Toy Run. I had no idea it was different than other toy runs. For many years I’ve had the privilege of riding in the Sacramento Christmas Parade, and was invited again. I love that parade. Actually, I love all parades. Unfortunately, both events were held at the same time, on the same day. I was disappointed that I couldn’t be in two places at once. I was ready to experience something new, so I turned down the parade to ride in the Toy Run. By the time we arrived at the start location of Eric W. Rood Administration Center, it was freezing cold, my fingers and toes were numb. We were among the first to arrive, so we hung out around the little gas heater and drank hot chocolate to warm ourselves. Bikes kept rolling in and before we knew it they were everywhere, covering the entire grounds. We walked around and said hello to many of our friends. Santa was there with his sleigh, waving hello. There were toys on the back of every bike, and some were carrying cans of food. The excitement was building. Soon engines started and it was time to roll. It was pretty cool to hear the motors revving, the pipes rapping, and to see all those bikes funneling into the narrow streets. Imagine my surprise when I saw the streets were lined with excited people from the community, all smiling and waving, giving thanks to the Bikers for being there and participating. Oh my gosh … No one told me this was a Parade of Motorcycles on a mission to bring joy to children! Immediately, I knew this was my new Christmas Parade. Riding on the back of the bike, I enjoyed waving
and thanking the community for their appreciation. We rode through Nevada City and Grass Valley to the Nevada County Fairgrounds. Inside the grounds, we walked to the buildings and saw both sides were lined with children and their families. All with huge smiles, they were waving and giving thanks to the Bikers. My heart was touched by this simple gesture of appreciation. We were told that every child is allowed to select 3 toys, and food is given to each family. Santa and Mrs. Claus were there sharing the excitement and taking pictures with everyone. We enjoyed this day so much, that we keep coming back. This year, Christmas 2018, much is still the same. It was still cold outside, though not as cold as some days past. Santa was there, with his motorcycle pulling a sleigh full of bicycles and toys. Excitement was building and bikes were ready to roll. People lined the streets, happy to see the Parade of Motorcycles and waving their signs that said “Thank You Toy Run Bikers.” We even saw the Town Crier, waving and smiling as he was ringing his large bell. Everyone could feel the welcome and appreciation. There were 1,620 bikes participating, many with two riders. Likely there were more than 2,500 Bikers, each with gifts for the excited and happy children. Santa was posing for pictures. Children and families are still giving thanks, waving, and showing us their huge smiles. The truth is, we appreciate them just as much. The emotion of the day is heartwarming. 1987 Harley-Davidson FXLR
I
have been a customer and friend of Mike Clinton of Clinton Custom Cycle for 16 years, A few years ago I was injured and unable to safely ride my 2006 Harley Road Glide. Sadly, I sold it and was devastated. Mike , being the great friend he is - called me up one day and asked if I’d be interested in a 1987 Harley FXLR for $2500. He said it would need work, but he would spend personal time to help me fix it up. His intent was to help keep me busy with the hobby that I am so passionate about – riding Harley-Davidsons. Mike and I started out with a list: the must do’s, the should do’s and the want to do’s. Needless to say, after a few months, all of the do’s - became the let’s do!! After two years of some extra welds, some powder coat – including the frame – paint, and a parts list that reads like a book, our beautiful vision is complete and absolutely bad ass! We left no stone unturned, purchasing everything new for the bike, including every single stainless chrome nut and bolt. Healthwise, I am still not completely well, but I have been able to safely ride this beauty a bit and every time you can see my smile from a mile away!! Like most, I decide to give my bike a fitting name and seeing that I’m Italian, I named this beauty – “Bella” which means “beautiful” in Italian. Mike, Danette and the staff at Clinton’s Custom Cycle made this an amazing experience. I truly believe they had as much fun as I did building this bike from the frame up! I will try to enjoy her for awhile, but most likely the day will come where some other lucky person is going to pick this up and enjoy her for many, many more years! ell, here we are January 2019. Many people I run into say, “I can’t believe 2019 is already here. 2018 seemed to just swoosh on by”. You see, most people I consult with take on a lifestyle of reactivity, reacting to the circumstances or predicaments they find themselves in at the moment. Sometimes its patching over a problem only to have that problem resurface over and over again. And the fact of the matter is the problem will continue to show up in many different ways until the core of the problem is dealt with and overcome. I suggest to the people I consult with to start taking a proactive approach to life instead of a reactive one. Unless we are proactive with our life, the days, weeks and years will seem to aimlessly pass us by and five years from now we will be in the same place doing the same thing without much recollection of the events that past. Being proactive in your own life means to read the books you need to read, take the classes and the courses you need to take, and meet the people you need to meet. I talk with people every day that wish they had a more intimate marriage, a better grip on their finances, a better relationship with their children or even a better career path. Here is the fact, you can have all of the above, “if” you are willing to be proactive and do the things it takes to acquire the things you desire.
be proactive to help more people succeed. Why do I stay in the scriptures? Because every living word I read helps me get through another day of the craziness that surrounds me so I can become that much better for my family. Unless I am proactive with my life and continue doing the things I need to do to grow, I will always have what I’ve currently got. The good book says “search and you will find” and yet we write that off as just words on a page, while thousands of people have searched and found a better life with purpose with God as the foundation. Want an awesome 2019? Let’s get proactive and intentional with our lives. Resolve to take charge of your life and make your mark in 2019! Come check out Thunder Road Church every Sunday evening in Roseville - and I guarantee if you search, you will find. And if you ask, the door will be opened for you. Mathew 7:8 For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. (NLT) “Never Ride Alone” Pastor Johnny Lujan
Yes, it’s difficult getting up at 5:30am and making it to the gym to strive for better health. Yes, it’s not easy putting down the electronic devices so our families can have intimate conversations around the dinner table. And yes, it’s not easy taking that class at the college or reading the extra book; but at the end of the day, I can guarantee you, its all very well worth it. Why do I go the gym? Because I see the alternative when I drive by Kaiser every day - so I am being proactive with my health. Why do I have motivational books all over my house and continue to read them? So, I can become a better person and Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 24

Bobby G’s Bucket List: Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials 2018
M
otorcycles have been my passion for 56 years and once I watched the movie “World’s Fastest Indian”, going to the Bonneville Salt Flats for motorcycle racing became high on my “bucket list”. Finally, this year I was able to go!! Traveling in my truck, I took three days of driving through Nevada’s desert to reach the salt flat. Arriving early on August 25th at 6:30am, there was already a line 3/4 of a mile long of riders hoping to set new speed records. The first car in line to go onto the salt was, as always in the past, a stunning 1952 Rolls Royce that was the tow car for Mellor Racing from Vancouver, B.C. These speed trials are put on by the AMA American Motorcycle Association and the FIM - Federation Internationale De Motorcyclisme, the world body that oversees all the top motorcycle races. (www.bonnevillespeedtrials.com) It took me about half an hour to get my wristband and make my way out onto the salt. Once on the salt, it was about 4 miles to the pits. I arrived at the pits very quickly as everyone was going well above the suggested speed of 45 mph. Everyone was quickly setting up their work areas, so I parked my truck and started walking the unique salt surface. There are two tracks on the salt flat. One is called the Mountain Track and it is 5 miles long. The other track is called the International Track and it is 8 miles long. On the Mountain Track contestants had a two mile start, then one timed mile, finishing with two miles to stop. The International Track gave riders a three mile start, one mile timed, and four miles to stop. To backup a record two runs must be made and then both speeds are averaged to give the rider a final speed. Every race bike had to undergo “scrutineering” or checking to make certain the bikes were
safe to race. Boots, helmets, riding suits and all gear was also checked that they were able to withstand any crashes on the rough salt surface. The salt was as hard as concrete and the buzz in the pits was that this was the best salt in 10 years. (I sure picked a good year to come!) Racers were stoked with anticipation of many records being broken during this week of speed trials. In 2017, many racers only got in two runs until the races were halted due to poor conditions on the salt.

Kit Axelson Hell Roaring Cycles
Once out on the salt, I noticed many racers knew each other from coming here for many years. I saw a nice looking Buell with a supercharger in the pit of Hell Roaring Cycles of Delta, Colorado. The owner was Kit Axelson and I introduced myself to him. He had been coming to Bonneville for 10 years and had built the 2007 XB9 Buell as a tribute to his father, Keith Axelson, who passed away last year. Kit took me under his wing and explained the rules and different classes and we soon became good friends. The Hell’s Roaring Cycle team consisted of Genevieve, Ed, Grant, and Roy who was Grant’s father. Through the week Kit Axelson went 134 mph to set a new record in his class and then reset his own record at 136 mph earning him a No. 1 plate. Later in the week, Kit also let Grant sign up to make two runs on the Buell in his first time ever on the salt. Grant was able to match Kit’s speed in the “run what you brung” class . Not bad for his first time on the salt! Pitted next to Kit was Mobitec, with an electric motorcycle from Japan , that had sent a race team with the intention of going 200mph on their EV-02 cycle. Their rider was Kazutoshi (Kaz) Mizutani, a famous racer in both the USA and Japan. Kaz and his team were very friendly. Unfortunately, Kaz suffered a race ending crash at 184 mph. Luckily he sustained only road rash and some torn tendons in his hand. He is one tough racer! Everywhere the atmosphere among the racers was very friendly and they often loaned each other tools, parts and even engines!
There were a lot of women racers, and one was the amazing Sandy Vetter, 88 years old, who set her first of 5 records in 2013 at the age of 83!! The next racer I met was a woman named Sherry Sandy Soliz from Oklahoma City with Vetter “Stripper Juice”, a bike cleaning spray. She was riding a Honda, because her BMW was broken, and was running in four different classes. I believe she had set at least two records before I left. People were there riding everything from Honda 50cc to 3000cc Harley Davidsons. Many older cycles were there including a 1941 Indian and lots of 60’s and 70’s machines were also there to compete. Other teams in attendance included The Jay Allen Racing Team and the British Royal Enfield Team which was there to introduce their new motorcycles working with S&S Cycles Racing Team. I also talked to Enzo Zanvit of Cevennes in Southern France. He was shooting a documentary titled “Till the Salt 2019” which covered the running of a cycle built by his father and called, “The Saltster”. It is a beautifully built 1974 Sportster and ridden by Bob Spikes. Pitted a little farther away was a Northern California team called Potluck Motorsports sponsored by C&E Auburn Indian and VTwin of Auburn, California. Potluck Motorsports consists of the four Doster brothers running 2000 cc Harley Davidsons. Another racer there was Hiro Kioso , running on a 2006 3000 cc Harley Davidson. Hiro obtained the highest speed of the trial which was 261mph!! (Check out his video on Facebook documenting this amazing run) One bucket list item now done. However I sure want to do it again next year! Thanks to Kit Axelson and his crew and to all the volunteers that put on this great event. Also a special thanks to Delvene Reber of Delicate Promotions for opening the Bonneville door to Thunder Roads Norcal! Article and photos contributed by Bobby “G” Godwin

MY TWO CENTS:
HELLO 2019
I
gotta say, I can’t wait for 2019 to get under way! There is all kinds of good and positive things that are coming my way. As most of you already know I have a shop that does Harley-Davidson frame repair and suspension alignments to get rid of that nasty and dangerous Harley wobble. Here’s the exciting part, I designed and patented all the equipment that Rack and Pull Industries uses for frame repair and suspension alignments, and there are shops around the world that are talking to me wanting to buy the Rack and Pull system. You see, Northern California isn’t the only place that has shitty handling motorcycles and unfortunately we’re not the only place that has motorcycle accidents.
When getting lost is just what you need...
I just installed one of my systems in Hurricane, Utah in a shop called Cycle Tech Industries and by the time this magazine hits the street - I will be installing another Rack and Pull system in Burbank, California in a shop called Ground Zero Cycles. My goal has always been to start this new industry called “Motorcycle Frame and Suspension Alignment”. By this time next year, with some hard work and a little luck, I will have the Rack and Pull System in a few shops around the world! So screw the New Years Resolution, this is a life time goal! 2019 is gonna kick ass!

From the first time I rode my FXR and hit 120 and drifted and wobbled to the next lane I knew there has to be a better way. To this day, I get guys coming in and telling me once the bike hits 85-90 mph it wobbles so bad –that they almost shit their pants. I get it. When it happened to me, I was a breath away from foaming up my pants. It happened to my brother Z Bones and he has about 45 years behind bars, (handle bars). They had to air lift him from Eureka to Oakland. This happened in a straight away at about 75mph. I never got to see Z Bones bike after the wreck to investigate what happened. I’m glad he survived it but needless to say, he still feels it every day.
Jacuzzi Suites In-room Fireplaces Sauna Rooms Available High Speed WiFi
I’m glad I have the tools and equipment to eliminate this problem. It’s a good feeling to know I can maybe save a life or prevent someone from getting seriously injured like Z Bones. I think about it every day. Riding a motorcycle is dangerous as it is, then add asshole drivers who text, talk on the phone, don’t pay attention and just don’t like us, then top it all off with a piss poor handling motorcycle. That’s some scary shit, ain’t it? Riding a motorcycle is fun, exciting and dangerous all rolled into one. What a lifestyle we chose. I wouldn’t trade it for anything! As I said in the beginning, 2019 is gonna kick ass and I’m looking forward to it! We here at Rack and Pull Industries want to wish everyone a safe and healthy New Year with much wealth and happiness for 2019! That’s my 2 cents. Now go ride like hell and have some fun! BIKER BAND REVUE
Flotsam & Jetsam’s Michael Spencer
M
ichael Spencer, may be most known as the bassist for Flotsam and Jetsam, but I first meet Michael when he was playing bass for RIFF/RAFF, a Sacramento based AC/ DC tribute band, at one of Roseville’s Downtown Tuesday night concerts. Halie O’Ryan (friend and fellow bandmate of Michael’s) and I rode over to support the band. I was very impressed with his performance, as well as the other musicians of RIFF/RAFF. During their set break, Halie and I went backstage to say ‘hi’. By the end of the break, Michael agreed to do an interview for TRM NorCal. And because of his intense schedule, we agreed to set up a time, after he returned from touring in Japan, with Flotsam and Jetsam. Taleah: Michael, after reading about your current adventures, you look like you’re a very busy man. Yeah, I’m a pretty busy guy. That’s usually a good thing for me, as long as I’m staying in motion with positive, forward, movement. Luckily, I’m about 1 or 2 years from retiring from the air-conditioning industry, with 28 years in the Sheet Metal Works Union. Along with being a touring musician, I’m a mechanical contractor whose business specializes in the building automation side of the HVAC being a 15-16-year-old kid that used to rehearse their songs in my industry, doing the computer programing and installations of the bedroom. I can totally remember playing to their “Highway to Hell” devices that control the actual equipment: the boilers, chillers, album, over and over again. It’s fun stuff… good hard rock. The pumps, A/C units, etc. I have a couple of employees, one being my first local show I actually did with RIFF/RAFF was Street Vibrations 19-year-old son Tallon. I’ve owned and operated 3in1 Control for in Reno and we were able to go back and play Street Vibrations about 15 years now. again this year where we headlined Harrah’s main outdoor stage, Taleah: So what does it look like Itinerary-wise for Flotsam and and enjoyed hanging with the the biker family that make a weekend Jetsam in 2019? We have promo videos coming out for that already. The music scene is pretty happening out there. sponsors putting the event together liked your stage performance Taleah: Flotsam has been around since 1981. In their early years, and music… It’s as simple as that. you played with them a little more than a year before you left, That’s the cool thing about the world-wide biker community; it’s a but came back in 2013. Was it your decision to leave? What did community of people with different backgrounds, with a unifying Michael Spencer do during that time? force... their love for motorcycles. Just because I didn’t grow up I originally joined the band in 1986 when Jason Newsted left to join with CCR (Creedence Clearwater Revival) or Lynyrd Skynyrd Metallica. I played with Flotsam for almost one year before I got playing in my house, doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate the energy fired. I didn’t like their personal manager, because he had way too of the music and lyrics. That’s the tie-in for the European aspect of much say in most all of the band’s decisions and was pretty much a the biker community. Some just have a slightly different sphere of manipulator. I think he started exactly what I did. Like I said, me getting fired out of the band was riding Indians and Harleys in 1934. Spencer’ as a kid and he would throw me on the back of his motorcycle. My first street bike was a 2004 Heritage Softail Classic, with a custom nebula yellow and cobalt blue paint scheme. I rode that for about 2 years, but with me working 50-60 hours a week at times, playing in numerous bands, and raising a family, my bike ended up sitting in the garage for about 4-5 years. My free time went away to where my bike didn’t get hardly any ride time… so I sold it to Halie O’Ryan, because I knew that she would ride it. My mistake was not looking at the blue book value of the bike and basically let her steal it from me, paying far less that it was worth. She’s nice enough to let everyone know, she got a steal of a deal on the bike. We get a good laugh at that now… I’m beginning to think she lets me play bass for her out of sympathy, because she knows she owes me one for that sale (laughing). So, she’s now the proud owner of my old Harley, put lovin’ miles on that bike and it fits her perfectly. I’m a big fan of the Softail Heritage Classic model. I love the old school look, with the leather bags. My retirement goal is buy a Heritage Classic with the 2015 anniversary series paint job, because it has the old school Harley orange and gray colors. Or a 2013 with the custom bronze/black color scheme. I just like that vintage look. It’s like being a vintage bass collector, I guess. When I play with RIFF/RAFF, I use a vintage 1978 sunburst, Music Man Stingray, the same bass Cliff Williams, the bass player for AC/DC plays. It’s kinda cool having something that has 40 years of playing on it, club after club, venue after venue, it’s got a story to tell. Just like any bike out there that’s 40 years old that’s still on the road… it has a story to tell; the roads it’s traveled down, the parties it’s been to. Taleah: Well Michael, we’ve covered two of the three bands you currently play with. The third band you play with is the Halie O’Ryan Band. What is your involvement with Halie’s band? Playing bass live with her when my schedule permits. Halie’s one of those artists that brings it every time she’s on stage, performing with heart and soul, with such a powerful voice. It’s not too hard to get behind a performer like Halie. We’re also hoping to get maybe 5 or 6 of Halie’s originals recorded, maybe for a possible EP. So, we’re starting the demo process in that, the beginning of the year. We have a goal for maybe March 1st to have 6 songs for an EP, mixed and mastered. Hopefully, a couple of months after the January issue hits, there will be some songs available online. Taleah: Let’s talk about your cannabis dispensary; with the recent legalization of marijuana in California, I’m sure there’s a lot going on in that industry as well. Revolution Emporium has been awesome to be a part of. We were one of the first dispensaries to receive a license to sell for recreational use once the law came into effect and we’ve also established an award winning line of chocolates, called Higher Confections, both in CBD and THC based products. And our team has that same quality over quantity mindset with how we do what we do with the dispensary. Taleah: Michael, you have been very successful. Not only in the business world, but up on stage. There are so many young men and young women out there that would give their eye teeth to be in your position. What would you say to them? Enjoy being in the moment of the art that you are creating. If they’re doing original music and trying to make a footprint in the world, they have to know that the industry has changed in the last 15-20 years to where it’s even harder to be successful and actually make a living at music than it was back in the 70’s, 80’s or early 90’s. It’s
a different beast these days. With some bands out there… they’re just hoping that they’ll be the one to win the proverbial lottery ticket of musical success, where you can make a living being an artist. To me, it’s about living within the dream, and living within the reality of what you are willing to accept as personal success and personal creativity. There are plenty of artist that didn’t become successful at their giving form of art; painters, authors, sculptors, or musicians that didn’t become successful or well-known ‘til they passed away, if at all. You may not experience it, but if your art is in a format that lives on forever, then it will potentially always touch people’s lives. It goes back to living in the moment, enjoy what you’re doing, enjoy your creativity, not get lost in the expectation or defeat of you not achieving certain goals. Let’s say there are 5,000 unsigned bands in the United States right now, with band members from the ages of 20 to 35… maybe 10 of those are going to get signed and actually have a chance for to make a career out of it. That means there’s 4,990 bands, with 4 to 5 band members each that won’t being doing that as a profession. In music, you’re hoping that you’re writing something that speaks to people and that you’re actually a small part of the ‘sound track’ of their lives. Which is why I think that a lot of us that are in our 40’s-50’s-60’s-70’s are able look back and still appreciate the music we listened to we were in our teens and early 20’s, where we all look at that time in our lives when we were young and full of life. We can go back in time emotionally and still have that same energy in listening to and enjoying the music and feeling those same sense of emotions that we did back then. Today’s younger bands are trying to create that for their generation of listeners, who are in that 20-year-old to 30-year-old age bracket. those bands are trying to be the sound track for their lives, but they have a lot more competition than a band in the 60s, 70s, or 80s had. They only had the radio and TV to compete against. Bands nowadays have the entire internet to compete with; YouTube, streaming, social media, etc., people can be completely entertained in their homes. How do you break through and be something special to a large group of people? That’s a hard one to figure out, or everyone would be doing it. They shouldn’t get frustrated that their art didn’t touch a bunch of people. Be happy that the quality verses the quantity of people you touched, makes a difference. If the quality becomes quantity then you’ve won the lottery as an artist. Did Santa bring it to you? “Yep, the little girl said. He sure did!” The cop looked the bike over and handed the girl a $20.00 ticket for a safety violation, saying, “Next year, tell Santa to put a reflector on the back of it”. The little girl looked up at the cop and said, “Nice horse you got there, sir, did Santa bring it to you?” “Yes , he sure did”, chuckled the cop. The little girl looked up at the cop and said, “Next year, tell Santa the dick goes underneath the horse, not on top”. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------This is the story of the blonde flying in a two-seater airplane with just the Pilot on an adventurous first date. The Pilot slumps over the wheel after clutching his heart. She frantically calls out on the radio: “Help me! Help me! My Pilot had a heart attack and is dead and I don’t know how to fly. Help me! Please help me!” All of a sudden she hears a voice over the radio saying: “This is the tower. I have received your message and I will talk you through it. I’ve had a lot of experience with this type of scenario. Just relax. Everything will be fine. Now, give me your height and position.” She says, “I’m 5’4” and I’m in the very front seat, right hand side.”
“O.K.” says the voice from the tower, “Repeat after me: Our Father Who art in Heaven. . .” --------------------------------------------------------------------------------My ex-wife just texted me, “Wish you were here.” She does this every time she walks through or past a cemetery. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Hazel owned a local Sports Pub and bitched and complained every morning when she’d have to clean the men’s urinals as there was piss all over the floor directly in front of them, rather than them actually hitting the mark and making it in the urinal. She knew there was something going on rather then just drunken pissing. So, she posted huge signs on every wall directly in front of all urinals: PLAYERS WITH SHORT BATS PLEASE STAND CLOSER TO THE PLATE. It worked like a charm. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------An ole guy biker goes to his doctor for his New Year physical and gets sent to the Urologist as a precaution. When he gets there, he discovers the Urologist is a very pretty female doctor. The female doctor says, “I’m going to check your prostate today, but this new procedure is a little different from what you are probably used to. I want you to lie on your right side, bend your knees, then while I check your prostate, take a deep breath and say, ‘99’. The ole guy biker obeys and says,”99”. The doctor says, “Great”. Now turn over on your left side and again, while I repeat the check, take a deep breath and say, ‘99”. Again, the ole guy biker says, ‘99’.” The doctor said, ‘Very good. Now then, I want you to lie on your back with your knees raised slightly. I’m going to check your prostate with this hand, and with the other hand I’m going to hold on to your penis to keep it out of the way. Now take a deep breath and say, ‘99’. The ole guy biker begins, “One ...Two... Three…”
