editor’s letter MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL!!

A

s the Toy Runs are coming to a close - we have once again witnessed in person the tremendous generosity of our biker community. We find ourselves feeling proud and blessed to be surrounded by such giving and caring folks that make up this NorCal biker community. We are truly blessed to be able to call so many of you friends. As much as I want to just get absorbed into the holidays and all of the joy that goes along with this season, this year I am having a hard time getting into the spirit. Because of the recent devastating fires, I just can’t help but to think about all of our brothers and sisters that no longer have a home to celebrate the holidays in. This has got to be a tough time of the year that brings back many joyous memories of celebrating with family and friends. I can only imagine that this is a very painful experience for these people who know that even though they will rebuild - it will be a long time before their lives are back to any kind of normal. Let’s all look for ways to help out as we bikers always do and we will do our best to help you all stay informed of any opportunities to lend a helping hand to the communities that have been so devastated. Having said that - we do not always hear about every effort within the motorcycle community to help out. So if you hear of an event or fundraising effort, let us know so we can share with all that we can reach. So many lives lost and so much lost that can never be recovered, the last couple of years has taught me one thing and that is that no community is safe from this type of event. I used to think it could only happen in rural or forested communities but we have seen that even suburban areas can be hit by the ravage of these fires. Life can change in an instant so let’s all make sure our family and close friends know that we love and care for them not just during this Holiday season but every opportunity we get to let them know. Please stay tuned in as we share events to raise money for NorCal fire victims.

RIDE DESTINATION: Eastern Arizona

nother October rolls around and Major League’s baseball playoffs and World Series are again being played. We amateurs have our own world series in the Phoenix area every year. We get to play on the spring training fields against teams from all over the country. Even teams from other countries make it to the tournament. So for the 28th year in a row, we packed up the bagger and headed to Arizona. Most of the first week was spent playing ball, so we didn’t do a whole lot of riding. BTW, last year we won the division. This year, not so much! Oh well, still had a great time! This year, we found a condo in Scottsdale to call home and spent some time hitting our favorite eateries. If you happen to be down this way for bike week (www.AZbikeweek.com) we could recommend YC’s, near Salt River (great Mongolian BBQ), Eddie V’s in Scottsdale (prime seafood), or maybe Pizzeria Bianco in Phoenix. Tournament over, we could now hit the road. Before leaving, we made time to check out the OdySea Aquarium (www. Odyseaaquarium.com) Very impressive! Sharks, penguins (mengins to our granddaughter), seals, piranhas, turtles and hundreds of other river and sea life up close and personal.

After our “underwater” adventure, we made our way to SR87 and then on to Payson for lunch. Arizona is such a beautiful state. It personifies what we all would consider “the West.” Cactus strewn painted deserts, rock wall mountains, incredible canyons. Just scenic , as all get out. Pulling into Payson, we put the kickstand down at our normal watering hole, the Buffalo Bar and Grill. A real nice cowboy/biker hang out. Refueled, SR260 took us to SR60 and on into Springerville/ Eagar, where we would spend the next couple of days at the Best Western. Good spot. Next door Basha’s grocery will keep your frig full of munchies, and the Trail Rider’s Restaurant and Saloon will do if you want a hot meal or a cold brew. While here, we visited the Dinosaur Museum. Nearby White Mountain has been a treasure trove of fossils. Also, the El Rio Theater is in Springerville. Oldest theater in Arizona. We have to mention Booga Reds. The best enchilada plate I’ve had since our trip to Sturgis with Bobby G, Bettye and Kenny. That year we stopped in Lovelock at La Casita for lunch. Still my number one place for enchiladas. Anyway, the whole reason for coming to Eastern Arizona was to ride Route 191, or what used to be US666, the “Devil’s

Highway.” This is a very twisty road. The section from Clifton to Alpine is about 120 miles and is said to have around 1100 turns. There aren’t a whole lot of guardrails, but the asphalt is very good. Because 666 is considered a number that represents the Anti-Christ, in 1993 Arizona changed the designation to 191. The other states followed soon after.

SR 78 191 75 Junction

This piece of highway is also called the Coronado Scenic Byway. Named for Spanish explorer Vasquez De Coronado. The route is near where in 1540 Coronado travelled in his quest for the seven cities of Cibola (or gold.) It was said that there was wealth beyond imagination to be found there. As it turned out, all they found was some Zuni Indian villages. The expedition was extremely expensive and ended up a financial disaster. We decided to make a day of it and do the “loop.” Putting down to Alpine, we picked up Rt180 and made our way east into New Mexico. A lot of New Mexico may be flatland desert, but the Western part is mountainous and very scenic. Rt180 will turn south and after a bit you can take SR78 back into AZ. SR78 will then hook up with US191 near Clifton. At this point, it was northbound to Morenci and lunch at the Miners Diner. A pattymelt and several Jack and cokes later, we were ready to take on that mean old highway!! Not really, we just had a beer. All I can say is “what a ride!!!!” Surrounded almost in every direction with incredible mountain views and unbothered by traffic, it was a most enjoyable trip. In all, our “loop” was about 300 miles. I should have mentioned that, just outside of town is the Morenci Mine. It is the largest open-pit copper mine in North America. A million tons a day have been taken out. We couldn’t get close but got glimpses of the huge two-story dump trucks. Diesel engines that weigh 25,000 pounds, carrying capacity of up to 400 tons. Impressive! Well, our adventure was a lot of fun, but it was time to be homeward bound. We took SR77 up to Holbrook, caught I40 and rode west to Winslow. Yep! Had to stop at “standin’ on the corner.” Even had a blues musician playing out front that day. We took some pics, walked around town and had lunch at the Relic Road Brewery. The candied bacon was fabulous.

At the bat Back on I40 it was off to Laughlin for the night. Stayed at the Aquarius for $40 (weeknight prices) Dinner was downstairs at the Vineyard. Fine view of the Colorado River. The next day, we completed our Arizona trip by stopping in Oatman. This town is generally on the Laughlin River Run agenda. As most know, it’s an old western town where burros run

free and mingle with the tourists. You can buy bags of food for $1 and feed the furry creatures. Watch it though! I guess I wasn’t shoveling it out fast enough, when one of the burros took finger food to a literal level and bit my pinky finger. Haven’t got foot and mouth yet, so I think I’ll survive. HA! Well, that’s all she wrote for this month. Article and photos contributed by Chuck and Cindy Loseth

8th Annual Jeff Keith’s Ride For Reason Benefiting Foster Kids…”Renewing Hope”

October 12-13 (Roseville/ Rocklin): Since 2010 lead vocals for Tesla, Jeff Keith has been hooked up with Ryan Fleenor of Higher Purpose The Events Foundation (www. higherpurposeevents.com) to put on a killer charity event for Paradise Youth Services foster children. Jeff and his beautiful wife Vera were on hand for the Pre-Party at The Opera House Saloon in Roseville which just so happened to be Jeff’s 60th birthday. Ryan presented Jeff with a birthday cake topped with 60 candles.

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 10

Holding one candle up Jeff made a speech and welcomed all of about 400 bikers, family and friends. The well-known Savannah Blue Band was the headliner for the evening, along with special appearance by Voyager and Bucket List. Rocklin Harley-Davidson hosted this year’s starting point for the riders. The following morning, the dealership opened their doors an hour early for the incoming bikes. The registration tent was the temporary hot spot to buy a ticket/sign in, pick up a ride pin, raffle tickets, tee shirts, coffee and breakfast buns. Then it was off to check out the new H-D’s in the showroom and more coffee. At 11:11am, the official “start your engines” was announced. Jeff Keith, Ryan Fleenor along with 2018 Ride For Reason’s top sponsor Mike Harris, owner of Accurate Cleaning Incorporated led the pack. VIP ticket holders followed. Once the first group of riders cleared the parking lot, the remaining riders followed in behind. Sherry Brace of Rocklin won the VIP up-grade ticket from her pre-registration general admission. The rumble of 400+ bikers could be heard for blocks as the ride began. After a beautiful scenic ride through Auburn Hills, Lincoln and on to Roseville, the pack of riders rolled into The Opera House parking lot. The smell of lunch and the sound of music from The Halie O’Ryan Band filled the air as the riders dismounted, and headed in the direction of Halie O’Ryan belting out a Fleetwood Mac song.

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 11

Everyone was ready to eat, drink (or the other way around) and party! Throttle Girl Kelly Quinn and Ryan Fleenor were the first to hit the dance floor, while others quickly followed. It was another successful charity event…biker style. Ryan Fleenor CEO of Higher Purpose the Event Foundation was happy to announce that this year’s Ride For Reason charity event raised about $15,000 for foster children.
A huge shoutout to the sponsors, vendors and volunteers: Accurate Cleaning Incorporated, 93.7 The River, Back Forty BBQ, JK’s Rustic Woodwork, Paradise Oaks, Saints & Sinners MC, Paradise Signs & Graphics, Sacramento Association of Realtors, Valley Fire and Security, Del Manouel Insurance group, Roxie Deli Barbeque, Rocklin Harley-Davidson, Donate Local, Auburn Extreme Power Sports, Ace In The Hole Towing and Leo Michael Anschutz Landscaping Inc. A second round of applause goes to The Savannah Blue Band; Mike Cochran, Dean Fisher, Scott Johnson, Larry Audio, Sam Young, Rich Ayers, Amy Ayers and Jack James. Halie O’Ryan and The Halie O’Ryan Band: Kelly Stephens, Brad Lang, Madical Barret, Bobby Campbell, Charlie McGimsey, Jack Hurst, Chris Mancuso, Ralph Arista, Billy Lambeth along with legendary blues rocker Lydia Pense, Voyager and Bucket List for their generous donation of their time and talents. UBNC Coast Veteran’s Ride 2018 November 10 (Arcata): UBNC Coast held their annual Veteran’s Ride themed “Freedom Isn’t Free”. The newly updated Vet Hall in Arcata was the perfect jumping off point. Built in 1930 using old growth redwood-including heartwood posts inside-the Commander Jeffery Sterling gave me the grand tour. The pack rode from Arcata into Eureka to Ocean View Cemetery for ceremonies which included an Honor Guard and the singing of the National Anthem. UBNC member Andy had the special task of honoring our beloved Dirty Dave, including releasing some of his ashes. We then rode to the Elk’s Lodge for a free spaghetti meal donated and prepared by the Eureka Elks. Thanks to the men and women who serve and especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Article and photos contributed by Tina DeKruse of Awesome Photography

CHALLENGE + ADVENTURE =

CHALLENGER!

I

had it in my mind several years ago that not many people would do it, and for some reason I didn’t even question whether I could or even if I shouldn’t. “Live Like Frank- Ride Like Pop” had been tagged on me late in the last decade, and so when I came out of the Silverado in Deadwood the final Friday night of the Sturgis Rally and my motor wouldn’t turn over it was a simple matter to come to a conclusion that I was NOT going to walk that 1700 miles back to Oregon—and I needed to figure it out damned quickly. Turn the key, nope. Neutral gear, yep. Start- nope. Kick stand switch- start-nope, hum? No headlight and no starter. Along came four guys - biker friendly riders-- and 1%-ers and 99%-ers who jumped in and pushed my 110 cu inches down the hill until it popped, and off to Buffalo Chip I roared. In camp, the diagnostic team was baffled, but when I asked who would try to pull start me with a golf cart- hands went up and 3 minutes later Swerve and Monkey had the bike pull started and the plan was hatched to just load my motor up with my gear, have the last guy still awake at 5am tug my bike until it roared and I’d ride off to in search of the west coast—while everyone in camp who didn’t know me questioned my decision—and those that did wished they could come along and see just how I was going to ride it! An extra key for the fuel cap - let me leave the bike running at the gas stops, drive-up windows let me grab a burger along the way, locked front end gave me a couple of minutes to run into a Walmart in Riverton, Wyoming to grab an expensive rechargeable spot lightno problems yet. Actually a great ride up to the point where I hit the kill switch in a freezing rain as I tried to wipe fog from the face shield on my helmet at a stop light coming out of Jackson Hole, and learned the lesson that in a freezing rain you will stand by the side of the road for two hours until the “Angel Jason” comes in his old Ford truck and asks “you need help?”. The quick lesson on how to pull start a motorcycle with a truck was an easy teach to this young guy and up the Teton Pass I rolled…the sun beginning to lay low in the sky as I motored into Idaho, Falls. With the new spotlight bungeed onto the sleeping bag roped to the handlebars, the cares of my riding long into the darkness wasn’t of any great concern: then 30 minutes of a decent battery powered headlight, right up to the point it dimmed to a candle flame, and I didn’t dodge the bump in the highway and I last caught sight of it was in my rearview mirror as the lamp bounced down the concrete at 90 miles-per-hour. I quickly tucked in

behind a big rig and tightened up my distance until he started punching his breaks to back me off. Ahhh! The tiny 8 LED stick light in my vest—and out it came! If I lay down on the tank and held the light out full arms length I got just enough reflection from the road lines to keep heading home. 3 hours at 85 mph and I was nearing a friendly place to sleep and a tow strap in the morning. Other than the road construction where they had no lines on the new pavement and I charged into that short section of pitch black night not knowing if death waited in there for me, that last 3 hours was spent just wondering when flashing lights would appear behind me and end the rush! Yet, the dark Angel that rides on my shoulder held me tight for 19 hours on the road that day and family smiles and a soft bed in Meridian, Idaho greeted me after midnight. The following morning came quickly and the tow-start had me rolling out of Idaho into Oregon an hour later--- 10 hours after that I turned “Marilyn’s” key to the left and slid off into the warm afternoon sun at home. 30 hours of high speed adventure…but: there was still a greater Challenge to visit me at Sturgis 2 years later----FAR GREATER! I ride, I love to ride, and I have for 57 years of riding. However, for two weeks I had been dealing with an upset stomach and a ‘pinch’ high between my shoulder blades. These were the exact symptoms of my wife’s failing gallbladder years before and so I simply knew I would be dealing with that surgery to remove mine when I returned home. I chomped down dozens of peppermint candies to calm my stomach ache during my stay and I finally came to the conclusion I had ‘seen the elephant’ after eleven days at the rally. On Friday afternoon, I arrived home an hour slower than most years. I had found a soft spot in a field at the “Grain Silo Inns and Stubble Field Suites” in Eden, Idaho—Agricultural hospitality and open air sleeping at its best, and lounged a bit longer than usual. Of course the duties of the traveling man were done and I grimaced as I explained to my wife what a bedtime athlete I must be, because I had pulled a muscle in my chest during our – “nap time”. The next two days caught her telling me that I should just go to ER and get the bad gallbladder dealt with… tough guy (read “Idiot” here) that I was I chose to wait until the ‘discomfort” was off the hook at 6am Monday and I awoke her to drive the old guy to town for an Emergency Room visit. Parking that early was already full outside the ER (also a full moon weekend) so she dropped me off at the side walk. From there it became much like a flat-track race for me. “How may I help you?” “Gallbladder needs to be taken out” “Pain?” “Upset stomach and a pinch between my shoulder blades - just like my wife had”. The nurse’s eyes brightened as she pointed to the door 6 feet away and another nurse grabbed me by the arm and started putting tapes and wires on me… 45 seconds later that nurse was pulling patches and repositioning them. 10 seconds later she asks “do we have a bed?”.. 25 feet and 1 minute away I’m in a gown with my ass hanging out and in steps the doctor. “I’ve come to have my gallbladder taken out and I’m not leaving with it”…”You’re having a heart attack”… “Bullshit”…”No shit! – You’re having a fucking heart attack. You’re a DEAD MAN WALKING!”… The gurney they tossed me on was sliding corners like ‘Tokyo Drift’ and the last thing I heard before the surgery doors closed behind me was my wife’s feet slapping the tile as she ran to keep up with the nurses and doctor rushing me to an operating room. “Dead man walking” -- ‘Was that what he said?‘

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 16

It had taken them 12 minutes from the time my wife dropped me off on the sidewalk in front of ER to put me on an operating table!!! ‘Dead man riding?’ “It’s in the web”… “Widow Maker”—I was aware of what that meant. You don’t survive the Widow Maker if it works its deadly magic on your heart. I wasn’t afraid of dying or even concerned for the end as they worked on me—I’ve already got that one worked out. But, the thought that my wife would have to deal with ‘all my stuff’ was a belief that discomforted me--- she’d end up hating me over that one. A couple days in the hospital and the consultation with the surgeons, and I came to the conclusion that you can be tough, but you can’t outrun fatality. “99.9 block on the LAD” (Left Anterior Descending Artery)—“ You had just a tiny SIP of blood still getting through—but that is not enough to keep your heart working—we don’t know why, but it did for you”--- “You presented this heart attack like most women do”… “You have a heart of a woman”….”WHAT?’’ “No, you have a man’s size heart…a big man’s heart, buy you have arteries the size of a woman’s heart--- you have “Dainty arteries”… Oh damn--- my buddy caught a sparkle in his eye on that one!

deal with the fun stuff in either unless you pull your head out and listen to the right people. 10 hamburgers a week, bacon, tons of salt…all that stuff almost kicked my ass for the last time. I listen much better now and was able to ride back to Buffalo Chip again this year…just as fast and just as hard- but knowing every mile of it had been time borrowed for me by the doctors. I do listen better now. I’m now in the process of doing an article in conjunction the heart surgeon on the many different ways heart attacks present themselves. Not all are a pain in the neck, shoulder and left arm, and not all present like my “dainty’ women’s style—so we all need to keep a better track of what is going on with our age, diet and red flags when it comes to our health. I’m glad I still get to ride and be on the road with the brothers and sisters who love the wind in their faces…but I almost messed it up. I do ride well - but as a diagnostic doctor I absolutely suck!

The point of this entire story front to back is that…Life is a CHALLENGE. Riding is an ADVENTURE - but you don’t get to

EVENT

Three weeks later I hear a motor shutting off in my driveway, and in walks Al with a patch in his hand—“You were Mad Dog, and then Uncle Mad Dog, and when you became ordained everyone at Sturgis called you “Father”, but a road name given is what you ride under…no choice.” Okay, so I have a bright red patch on my vest now that reads- “DAINTY”…

In April I received an invitation to go to Lyon, France for a large motorcycle gathering to honor me. WTF? “The press will be here for you…television, newspaper, magazine, radio”…”You are Legend!” WTF - WTF? “Oh, every rider in France knows of the Legend… you are the one who rides 2700 kilometers from Sturgis Rally while having a heart attack!—You are Legend!” The stay in France was very fun and interesting… and I finally figured it out. You can be tough and ‘ride like Pop’… but the legend of “Dainty the Idiot” has long legs and travels fast around the world! Yep- you ride the name you’re given--- Pop the Legend—I mean “Dainty”.

caught our attention when we saw its owner Tee - the President of Kanaka Hekili MC, roll up for an event at San Francisco H-D. In our travels across the north state, TRM NorCal have crossed paths with Tee several times. On one occasion, we received an exclusive invite to join the club for a pack ride as they entertained several out of state KHMC chapters to NorCal. We were fortunate to meet several Kanaka Hekili members including members from Hawaii that came over to ride with their Cali brothers. We had a great time and can attest to the fact that this is a good bunch of folks that make up this club. We finally were able to do a photo shoot with this beauty so we could share with all of you. Here is what Tee has done to this motorcycle to get it to this point. his bike

MY TWO CENTS: MERRY CHRISTMAS!

H

ere we go again. The holiday’s are officially upon us. This is the time of year we get to see family and friends. Some of which we don’t see enough and can’t wait to be with them again, and others… not so much. I love seeing my family and miss seeing them all the time and I miss seeing my friends too. It seems like we just don’t get to see enough of each other. And then there is the – ‘not so close distant relative’ who you see only during the holidays. This is the person that voices his opinion about everything, he thinks Sons of Anarchy is a true story and has nothing in common with anyone there. And yet, every year he shows up and makes you wonder how the hell he makes it through the rest of the year without getting an ass whooping every day! You know who I’m talking about…”the one who starts putting food in his to-go bag at the dinner table and drinks too much and by the end of the evening knocks over the Christmas tree, starts arguing with everyone (including the little kids) and then throws up in the dishwasher. And guess what!? He’ll be back next year! Don’t get me wrong - I LOVE the holidays! I love seeing family and friends, and even the cold weather doesn’t bother me. I just don’t like the commercialization of Christmas. I think that’s what stresses people out for the holidays. Some people are so worried about getting gifts for loved ones and guests that it takes the joy out of the holidays, and they lose sight of what it’s all about. I know about the historical and religious celebrations for the holidays; but for me, the best part about the holidays is being with family and friends. And let’s not forget about the food! I’m talking about the food leading up to the holidays and the food of the holidays. There’s the Thanksgiving turkey and all the fixings, appetizers, pies and cakes! The Christmas dinner with prime rib, turkey or ham and all the baked goods leading up to it and then there’s the New Year’s Day feast after the annual ride. That’s always a feast fit for a king after the ride. HA! A motorcycle ride on a brisk winter day and a feast fit for a king is the perfect way to start a new year! o everything (turn-turn-turn) - There is a season (turn-turn-turn) and a time to every Purpose under heaven. A time be born, a time to die. A time to plant, a time to reap. A time to kill, a time to heal. A time to laugh, a time to weep. A time to build up, a time to break down. A time to dance, a time to mourn. A time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together. A time to love, a time to hate. A time for war, a time for peace. A time you may embrace, a time to refrain from embracing. A time to gain, a time to lose. A time to rend, a time to sew. A time to love, a time to hate. A time for peace, I swear it’s not too late. A popular song released by the Byrds on October 1st, 1965. Although the original words from Ecclesiastes that these lyrics were copied from were written somewhere around 450-200 BC and in the 21st book of the bible, like so many things we find that are good in this world they actually originated from the scriptures. What these lyrics are trying to tell us, is that God’s timing is always perfect. Even while we are battling through our setbacks and trials, the good book tells us that it is only for a little time while as He prepares the timing to change. Now, not many people like change, but sometimes things just need to change. We outgrow our clothes so we have to buy new ones. We have children, outgrow the sports car, and trade it in for a minivan. We go from living in our parent’s house, to renting an apartment, to hopefully one day purchasing our own home. Pastor Johnny has a drinking problem and gets sober 30 years ago; so change we can see is necessary and helps us to grow.

to two years, it was time to move on once more. Then we found an awesome pastor to lend us his building on Thursday nights. And now we come to another changing point for the church. As of January 6th, 2019, Thunder Road Church will begin meeting every Sunday evening in Roseville and we will discontinue church service on Thursday nights in Rancho Cordova. We believe this will be a good move for the church with an easier time to meet, and a great central location with more and more people joining the church on a monthly basis. We have been averaging 60-75 people every time we have a service in Roseville and we are excited to really have some great events on the books in 2019. We would love for you to come check us out December 9th for our Christmas Service and then be with us every Sunday evening thereafter starting in January. This is not like any other church you have attended in the past. EVERYONE is welcome at Thunder Road Biker Church…. See You There! Ecclesiastes 3:1 For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven (NLT) “Never Ride Alone” Pastor Johnny Lujan – Thunder Road Church

Sometimes change just happens and then there are times when change is planned to fulfill a higher purpose and calling. So it goes with Thunder Road Church. We have been meeting in Rancho Cordova for just over 8 years. We started in a parking lot with a music stand, a pop-up tent, some chairs and an extension cord to draw power from a nearby business. Soon we rented a space to get out of the winter weather and stayed there 1 year. Soon we were able to find our first small warehouse that we turned into a biker church. Four years later, we moved into a larger space and called that our home as well. We thought we would be there for a long time; but close Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 24

2019 MODEL REVIEW: Indian Chieftain Dark Horse Special thanks to C&E Auburn Indian and VTwin

A

(1) Touring - a predictable roll on the throttle kind of acceleration; I would use this mode for rolling down the freeway just banging out the miles.

But more importantly, how does this bike ride? There is no doubt that the 111 Thunderstroke engine has the power to make this a fun bike to ride; but this year Indian added three (3) ride mode options to give the rider the ability to adjust…on the fly.

(3) Sport – this mode will definitely give you that seat of the pants thrill. If I were hitting the back roads and looking for some fun I would switch it over to the Sport mode. When I first heard about this feature, I thought it might be a bit gimmicky. After playing with it a bit, I do think that I would use all the features regularly it definitely adds more fun to the ride.

fter two days of riding the 2019 Indian Chieftain Dark Horse, I was able to spend enough time with this bike to get a good feel for it. Although I do not normally go for white bikes, my first impression was that this one really caught my eye with the soft matte white paint and everything else being matte black just really had a nice look to it, I thought.

(2) Standard – you could actually feel the increase in throttle response. This mode is where I would personally ride most of the time.

The next highlight of this model is the infotainment center that was designed with the visual needs of a rider in mind. Located in the fairing, there is a touch screen monitor that is easy to operate with gloves on or off. It is easy to read display to keep the rider informed about the bike from tire pressure, the oil life before needing to change it, plus navigation that will prompt thru the speakers or thru bluetooth to your helmet. Indian really did a great job on this design. One of my favorite things about this particular model is how nice they ride with 4.7 inches of travel up front and 4.5 inches at the rear wheel from the Fox Mono shock. The ride quality is sure and plush, just what you would want from a touring bike. The seats have been redesigned this year and it is a big improvement. My overall take is this bike hit the nail on the head for this category. If you like to crank out the miles, but want to look good and feel good while you do it this bike definitely deserves your consideration. Article and photos contribute by Stan Hill. If You Can See What I Can See … You Might Be Riding On The Back Of A Harley Visiting the Five White Crosses Memorial Five White Crosses

W

hen Curt and I started riding in the hills above Placerville, friends told us we needed to go see the Crosses. The story we heard was that a logging truck with a full load had crossed the centerline and ran over 5 motorcycles, killing the riders. We heard the crosses were placed in their memory. Soon after hearing the story our friends took us there. Riding upon the site of five tall white crosses high up on a hill, I crossed myself with the sign of the cross, praying for the eternal rest of their souls. We were mesmerized by the story and the memorials left to honor those who had passed. Over time we made numerous trips to visit the Crosses and pay our respects to those gone before us. As years go by the story is still on my mind. The pieces of the puzzle don’t all fit and I wanted to know more. I knew if I wrote about the crosses I would investigate the facts. I am fascinated by the information I found, the stories I have heard, the fables that were assumed true, and the people I interviewed who spoke the truth as they remember it. The Hope Valley Run was held annually during Labor Day Weekend, in the Sierra Nevada forest land. Motorcycle riders from near and far rode to the campsite destination looking forward to a weekend of motorcycles, music, friendship, a party and good time. The Youth Group from a local church had decided to go into the mountains and cut firewood to sell as a fundraiser. The wood was cut and cords were loaded onto a one ton flatbed truck. The wood was not tied down properly. Plywood panels were used as sides to hold the wood in place and to be able to stack the wood high. The driver of the truck and his female passenger, were traveling downhill with a heavy load of wood. At about the same time, a large group of about 35 motorcycle riders, were traveling in staggered formation uphill along the Mormon Emigrant Trail on their way to the Hope Valley Run. They were about five miles south of Sly Park, near Jenkinson Lake in El Dorado County, when a tragic accident happened. Investigators believe it was a load shift on the truck that caused a panel holding the wood to break loose, and wood went all over the roadway. Investigators were unsure at what point the bikes and truck collided, whether the motorcyclists were hit by the wood, or crashed into it. But this is known for sure, the truck was way overloaded. The springs were bouncing, the front

end was light, and the driver was losing control as the truck went faster and faster downhill. The truck got squirrely, the load shifted, the panel broke, wood spilled, and the driver of the truck crossed into oncoming traffic at or about the exact same time that the bikers were in the same place. Bikes went down, the truck turned over. Fuel from the vehicles, the wood, and sparks from the collision ignited a fiery crash that engulfed the victims in flames, and killed five motorcyclists at the site. There was great confusion at the scene of the accident. At first authorities were unaware of the severity. There was a rolled over truck, crushed bikes, spilled wood and burning fire. Until they put out the fire, they did not realize how many victims there were. Life Flight UCD Med Center and Life Flight Reno flew in to help the critically injured. UCD Flight Nurse Margaret Watson Hopkins still remembers the horrible crash scene was so traumatizing that rescue personnel were treated for psychiatric evaluation. Nurse Hopkins assisted the female passenger of the truck, who was burned over 95% of her body. Ms. Hopkins said she was praying for her patient while preparing her for the flight to the hospital. The young woman’s family and friends gathered in the hospital ICU to sing hymns and pray for her. Unfortunately, she did not survive. A sixth motorcyclist with critical burns over 60% of his body, was cared for by Reno Life Flight. He is one of two survivors from the crash impact site. The other survivor was the driver of the truck. CHP reports state no charges were filed. With so many motorcyclists traveling together, other bikes crashed behind the main point of impact. One survivor, Emily Tuer, was riding on the back of a motorcycle with the brother of one of the victims who died at the crash impact site. Hospitalized with a badly broken leg, she was never expected to walk again. Determined to prove the doctors wrong she still walks one mile every day that she can get outside. Out on a walk one day, she met up with some girlfriends of mine. She noticed they were lady bikers and members of Folsom H.O.G. She struck up a conversation with them, saying that she once was a lady biker, and told her story. They got goose bumps listening to her. They were in awe and honored to meet her. The Hope Valley Run had been held annually for about ten years. Saturday, September 2, 1989 was a nice day. Brad White

was the Event Emcee. He recalls the winds were calm, there was sunshine on the field, and the stage was ready for Rock & Roll bands to entertain. In a time before cell phones, when there was no social media, people depended on word of mouth for direct communication. The tranquility of the day was shook by riders arriving with information. There was no incoming news other than what riders had to say. At first they said, “Someone was in a bad wreck.” As more riders arrived the story changed to “Oh my God, someone died.” Soon it was, “Oh my God, it’s really bad.” As bikes came in, riders would drop their bike and fall to the ground, crying and thanking God. With a need to simply get where they were going, there was no more energy or will to even put the kickstand down. As tears were flowing, each bike that arrived was greeted with hugs and Hallelujah, because they were survivors. Everyone waited for each bike to arrive, to find out who was alive. It was an emotional drain. As the day evolved, it was learned that some family members of the band had perished in the horrific accident. The show went on, the band did play. It became a solemn event, no party and no fun for anyone, just sorrow. The road was cleared. After the event, riders rode home traveling past the accident site. Many stopped and stood on the hill. Looking down at burn marks on the pavement, they could see the image of bodies and bikes. They could also smell the odor of burned asphalt and forest. Brad White was one of those who found a connection to the scene and was emotionally moved by what he felt. He worked for Little Jimmy, the owner of James Rouse Construction. Little Jimmy was a speaker for the MMA and known for helping people, especially bikers and their causes. As they discussed the weekend, he told Brad they needed to do something about this accident, and they did. They went back to the shop. Together they spent a week building

Brad White at Hope Valley circa 1989 five white crosses, each cut from 12 foot beams, to place at the accident site in honor of the five riders who died there. Little Jimmy applied for permission to install the crosses at the site and was denied. Cal Trans said they could not give permission for permanent structures because if they did memorials like this would pop up all over the state. Cal Trans allows small roadside memorials that are perishable and gone within a year. Permanent memorials are not allowed. Little Jimmy went to court in Sacramento and received a 90 day encroachment permit. He and Brad took an auger to the site and began trying to dig holes for placement of the crosses. They dug down and the auger hit rock time after time. They kept moving, in ten foot increments, until they would find a place where all five crosses could stand together. About 50 feet from the site of the accident, high up on top of a hill, they found that place. Not happy with a 90 day permit, Little Jimmy kept going to court. Just about every two weeks, after each request was denied, he would change the wording and file a new request. More than 90 days had passed when he sought the advice of an attorney who was his friend. He filed his final request with the Senate Transportation Committee, asking for permission to permanently place the crosses at the site of the accident. Little Jimmy and Brad went to the Senate hearing appearing professional and ready to impress, both dressed in suits and shoes that shinned. At this hearing, Little Jimmy was awarded an injunction and given lifetime permission for the crosses to remain. A dedication ceremony was held to unveil the crosses. Family

members of the victims were in attendance, along with more than 200 Bikers. The dedication ceremony was shown on local television news. Little Jimmy accomplished what he set out to do. With no recognition for himself, he memorialized the five bikers who lost their lives in one of the most tragic motorcycle accidents in local history. Later, a family member of one of the deceased placed one of the melted motorcycle engines at the site, along with a plaque telling some of the story about what happened. This relic, a motor associated with the accident and fire, has become a shrine for all bikers who come to the site and see it. The cremated remains of more than one biker who has passed on have been left at the site. There are multiple memorial plaques placed in honor of beloved family members. Today this place is known as sacred ground where everyone who arrives feels a connection to the land and the people who were hurt or lost their life there. Rich Klinke tells the story of his eerie connection to the site. Twenty six years and one day after the horrific accident, Rich had an accident while riding his motorcycle past the site. Unaware what was happening, his heart stopped. He went unconscious and was thrown from his bike. The friends he was riding with took him to the hospital. He was diagnosed with bradycardia and received a pacemaker. Was he saved because it happened at this site? Why on this day, during Labor Day weekend? Is there a connection to those who have gone before us? Whatever it is, Rich survived to ride again. He often stops to say thanks to those he believes may have had a part

in saving his life that day, and just may be his guardian angels. Bikers from near and far often make the ride to the site, just to see and pay their respects. Many leave a trinket, note, flowers, or prayer. There is an easy path that takes you up the hill and behind the crosses. Knowing I was writing this article, I asked my friends, members of the Sierra Riders, to ride with us to the site. I needed to feel it again, take pictures, read the plaques and say my own prayer. We left a lapel pin on the shrine. It is a reminder of our Pirate Treasure Poker Run. We stood together behind the crosses and took a group picture. The area at the site of the accident is now a legend. In the forest, high atop a hill, it is pure and sacred. A place to remember and pray for those who have gone before you. Whatever you feel, the site has become a sanctity for bikers and the feeling is real. I found the two survivors of the accident. They are still alive. I intentionally did not reach out to interview them. I feel the need to let them tell their story when and if they want to. All of the pieces to the puzzle still aren’t here, and may never be, but now we know more of the truth. Almost 30 years later, the five white crosses still stand and honor the motorcycle riders who died at the scene. Each cross bears a plaque with one of these names: James Carter, Jeffrey Pearl, Deborah Sund, Jeffrey Sund and Doug Wall. Article and photos contributed by Cyndee Reed Van Hooser

Shinerfest 2018 S

Arrive. Raise Hell. Leave.

eptember 28-29 (Wilseyville): It was a great day to jump on my bike and ride out to Calaveras County for the Moonshine Bandits annual campout. Shinerfest is a 3 day campout, filled with bands, games, food, beer and just good ol’ camping fun. The Moonshine Bandits headlined the event, along with Diversity of One, Big Smo and Bubba Sparxx to name a few. Also on the schedule of events was Julian Dusseau’s Motor Cross Stunt Riders. During the day, Tex and Bird of Moonshine Bandits kept the massive crowd busy with the Shiner Olympics with games of all sorts, guaranteed to have you jumping, hopping, blowing or crawling around the ground for the prize. This years Shinerfest theme was “Show America Proud”. Every camper was encouraged to set up their campground area with the Shiner theme and for as far as you could see American flags were proudly displayed. It was an impressive sight! The winner of the best campsite went to The Operation Packing Company. Operation Packing Company is a nonprofit organization that sends care packages to the troops overseas… Good job OPC! A big shout out to all the sponsors that made Shinerfest 2018 a huge success! Article and photos contributed by Sherry Brace

BIKER BAND REVUE

Lane Baldwin B

Genre: rock/blues assist - singer - songwriter – author, Lane Baldwin has an extensive and very impressive portfolio to say the least. The media is filled with information about Lane’s endorsements, reviews of his CD’s “Dig The Hole” and “The View From Here” interviews about his life, music and the books he has published.

Taleah: Lane, your accomplishments have been recorded by some of the heavyweights in the media. They have given their audience a full account on what Lane Baldwin has been up to, and made it easy for the reader to find page after Google page, just by typing in Lane Baldwin. In a recent press release you stated that you would be releasing your newest project “I Won’t Give Up”. Thunder Roads NorCal Magazine is honored to be the first published interview you have granted to tell readers about your latest project. Lane: When I became deathly ill, “I Won’t Give Up” was my personal theme song. After flatlining in the ER, I was placed in a Surgical ICU. The surgeon told me I should’ve died two days earlier due to severe dehydration and system degradation. I told her the reason I was still alive was because “I won’t give up.” Nine days later, I died three times as they raced me into surgery because gangrene had set in. Obviously, my surgeon saved me, but here’s the amazing part…during those flatlines, I had a conversation with my guide to What Comes Next? He told me it was my time, but I refused to go. We argued about it until I prayed to God three times to be allowed to come back and finish what I was sent here to do. After several minutes of silence, during which he seemed to be having an internal conversation with God, he said, “All right, Lane. Three times you’ve promised God you’d finish your task and He has heard you. Let it be as you have prayed. But I have to tell you, it’s so much harder than you realize; it’s going to hurt more than you’ve ever been hurt before; and you’ll probably still fail. But I will watch with great interest, and I will be there at the end. And this time, Lane, you will come home.” With that, I woke in recovery amazed that I was still alive. I wrote “I Won’t Give Up” the day after I got home from that first hospital visit. It’s based on lessons my father drilled into me again and again…when life knocks you down, stand up again. Find a way forward. Don’t give up on your dreams. You haven’t failed until you give up. I distilled it all down into the song, then added the thought that I’m not the only one who can overcome hardships; because let’s face it, we all have to deal with them. But, as Dad said, don’t let hardships define your life. Let your response show the world who you are.

After two and half years of doctors, surgeries, hospitals, friends disappearing and several instances of homelessness, we recorded the song and did a video. We all thought I was going to go back to work. But then more setbacks held me up with more homelessness, more betrayals, more loss. But I never lost sight of my goal, never lost faith, and never gave up. Finally, five years after dying and living again, I’m back where I should be. All because I won’t give up. If the song and video haven’t released by the time this interview is published, they will soon. We’re rehearsing the new band, getting ready to tour. We’re recording again, and will release one or two more songs as singles before releasing my third full-length project. I’m finishing two book projects - one on my ordeal and how I got through it, the other an anthology of stories behind many of my songs. Both offer a cold hard look into the life of a man who has been beaten down more times than you can count, but still won’t give up. My goal is to inspire others to never give up, to never stop believing in themselves. I hope my life will be a positive example to everyone who has ever faced hardship or tragedy and wondered if they could overcome it. Because I’m here to tell you - if I can do it, you can do it, too! Just. Don’t. Give. Up. Taleah: What an inspiration to us all Lane! Currently Lane is the bassist for The Jackson Stone Band, while he prepares his band for the upcoming tour “I Won’t Give Up” Article and photos contributed by Taleah Ebey / T3 Design Studios

Out driving around town and waved to my Ex today. Next time I might use all my fingers. -------------------------------------------------------------‘Panhead’ was having a really bad day. He tried to button his shirt and the button fell off. He went to open the door and the doorknob fell off. We jumped on his bike, grabbed his ape-hangers and they just fell off. Panhead is now very concerned about taking a piss. -------------------------------------------------------------First-year students at the Purdue Vet School were attending their first anatomy class with a real dead cow. They all gathered around the surgery table with the body covered with a white sheet. The professor started the class by telling them, “In Veterinary medicine it is necessary to have two important qualities as a doctor. The first is that you not be disgusted by anything involving the animal’s body.” For an example, the professor pulled back the sheet, stuck his finger in the butt of the cow, withdrew it, and stuck his finger in his mouth. “Go ahead and do the same thing,” he told his students. The students freaked out, hesitated for several minutes, but eventually took turns sticking a finger in the butt of the dead cow and sucking on it. When everyone finished, the Professor looked at them and said, “The second most important quality is observation. It’s very clear to me you all need better observation skills, because...... I stuck In my middle finger and sucked On my index finger.” -------------------------------------------------------------My wife gets embarrassed over just about everything that I say or do. And then she goes on and on about it for the entire day or night. So she’s been out of town, but called and said that my son and I should pick her up at the airport but not to wear anything “stupid” or “that would stand out” so as not to embarrass her in front of all the other passengers. My boy and I were at the airport almost an hour early as it was Christmas Eve day and we were glad she was getting home just in time for Christmas and we stood there proudly with our big sign that read: Welcome Home From Prison Mom! -------------------------------------------------------------Lil’ Johnny’s father was having trouble with his son as he was constantly cursing and his Mom had just about had enough. She told him to go talk to the Preacher and ask his advice on how to make him quit.

“Here’s what you do”, said the Preacher. “Christmas is right around the corner. Ask Lil’ Johnny what he really wants for Christmas and every time he answers and curses, leave a pile of dog crap where the present goes.” Later that day, the father asks Lil’ Johnny to name a few things he truly wants from Santa. Lil’ Johnny replied, “When I wake up, I want a new baseball just lying there on my tired ass old mattress.” “Then, when I go downstairs and outside I want to see a brand new train going round and round that damn old oak tree. “And then, I want to walk down the damn driveway and I want to see a shiny, new damn bike, just ready for me to jump on and ride.” Christmas morning Johnny wakes up with dog chit on his mattress. He walks downstairs onto the porch and sees dog chit going all the way around the old oak tree. Then he looks down the driveway and sees the biggest pile of chit he’s ever seen in his life. Lil’ Johnny’s Dad walks up behind him and asks “So what did Santa bring you son?” Lil’ Johnny replied, “I do believe he brought me a puppy, but I can’t find the little sum’ bitch.” -------------------------------------------------------------The first testicular guard, the “Cup,” was used in Hockey in 1874 and the first helmet was first used in the 1920’s. That means it only took 46 years for men to realize that their brain is also important to protect. -------------------------------------------------------------Is it just me or would Obituaries be way more interesting to read if they actually told you all the details of how certain folks died. Now, there’s some stories! --------------------------------------------------------------I was really gettin’ tired of people in our small town coming up to me at weddings, poke me in the side and say “You’re next, get ready”. Ever since I started doing and saying the exact same thing to them at funerals......they quit. --------------------------------------------------------------I asked my wife what she wanted for Christmas and she said, “why don’t you actually get a decent present this year and invest in a penis enlarger?” So, I shopped around and found the perfect gift. She’s 27, built like a brick chit house and her dancer name is ‘Jingle Bells’.
