HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY ALL!!

A

S I SIT here and type these words, it made me reflect on what this celebration is all about. Independence Day? Just what is the true meaning of this day and do we collectively understand it? I mean REALLY understand it. For me, it made me think about what our founding fathers would be like if I could meet one of them today. I wonder would they be impressed with our progress as a society? I can’t help but to think that if one of them were to show up in today’s world that they could not help but to marvel at the technology that we have created. Cars, computers, cellphones, airplanes - hell even space ships! It would have to be far beyond their wildest imaginations. But something in the back of my mind also tells me that they might look upon us with disgust. Disgust for failing to preserve the hard fought individual freedoms that they provided to each one of us way back then. I could just imagine George Washington wanting to punch me right in the face for failing to do my part in preserving what they fought for. Kind of like my grandfather did to me when I failed to do my chores because I wanted to fight my older brother. I quickly decided my chores were the smarter option. I can still remember how disappointing my hard working grandfather hurt me much more than his punch - although it was hard enough to take me off my feet. He wanted me to learn to take full responsibility for my actions (it was my fault the chores were not done). I got the message and learned a lesson that I have never forgotten. I am not trying to go all political on you here, but this day does have a meaning and we all need to reflect on where we came from and just how it is that we are fortunate enough to live in this great country. Maybe we need to be a bit harder on our elected officials. If they ‘think’ they need more of our hard earned money, then we hold their feet to the fire (so to speak) and demand that they are individually held accountable for how and where it is used. We also need to think long and hard about anyone who suggests that we give up any more of our freedoms for the sake of security. That is a slippery slope that many other societies have gone down with disastrous results. Let’s all collectively strive to stay independent, so our children and grandchildren’s children that follow us do not have to live under the oppression that our ancestors fled to find a free life here in America. I have ‘RIDE FREE’ tattooed on my forearm. It means a lot to me and I am reminded of that every morning when I brush my teeth it is right there in the mirror requiring me to reflect daily. Thank you to all who have served and are currently serving our country, without you this conversation would not be possible. Now let’s all have a toast to our freedom and blow some #@%^&$ up. I am talking about fireworks, not sure what you were thinking!?! Have a safe and happy 4th of July!

MY TWO CENTS:

S

UMMER TIME is upon us and the heat is here, and sometimes there’s no escape from the heat. You’ve been riding down that winding, dusty road and you’ve been in the hot dry wind for hours. Then you remember there is a nice cool little bar that sells the coldest beer in town not far from here. The heat feels like it’s starting to cook the fluids in your head, your bike is starting to ping and make funny noises from the heat. You pull up to a red light and you can see the heat waves dancing off your engine and your legs feel like they’re on fire. You see big drops of sweat dropping on your gas tank as your face feels like it’s starting to melt from the heat of your engine. To make matters worse, there’s only one lane in your direction and you’re stopped behind a Prius. The light turns green and as you start to throttle on you’re thinking “I’ll bet the coffee I had this morning is thicker than my oil right now.” You finally hit third gear, it’s lugging but its third gear and the Prius in front of you is driving slow like he has nowhere to go. You’re thinking screw this guy! I don’t care about the double yellow line, I’m burning up and I need wind! You rap the throttle, downshift to second gear and check for head on traffic and glance in your mirror and SHIT!! There’s a cop behind you. All you can do is laugh and wait for a passing lane. As the passing lane comes into view the cop turns off. When you finally reach the passing lane you hit it with a vengeance! You down shift and grab a hand full of throttle! As you twist the throttle you notice the Prius is picking up speed too! You can hear the little engine rev, but there is no way in hell you’re going

to let this Prius in front of you! As you pass the Prius you look inside and notice the driver has that “I think I can, I think I can” look of determination on his face. The little Bastard is wearing a sweater and has the A.C. on so high he’s shivering like a dog trying to shit a peach pit. You hammer the throttle and rip the gears, by the time you hit fifth gear, he’s out of sight in your mirror. It makes you laugh when you think of the determination on his face to get in front of you, but now it’s not so funny because you almost split your lip open because it’s so dry. You’re hammering left turns, right turns, powering out of the corners and diving into the turns. You roll out of the last big sweeper and it feels like you’re riding into the furnace of hell. But wait…… Through the heat waves coming off your engine and the road you see a sign that says “Cold Beer” and you pull up and park with all the other motorcycles. You open the door to walk in and you’re hit with cold air, the sound of laughter, music, good times and the smell of tasty food. You take a big pull off your cold beer and say “Ah! This is the place to escape the heat till the triple digits are gone!” It’s gonna be a nice ride home tonight. That’s my 2 cents. Stay hydrated, have fun and ride like hell! Centerville Beach

RIDE DESTINATION: Ferndale I

N OUR LATEST foray north, we made a visit to the old Victorian village of Ferndale, located on the north edge of the Lost Coast and adjacent to the Eel River. It’s a quiet and relaxing place, yet there are plenty of outside activities nearby.

Heading up I5, we made the traditional stop at Granzella’s, but since it was Memorial Day, it was closed to honor those who fought and died for their country. It’s always a nice ride up SR20 to Hwy 101. There, we headed north and putted up to the Peg House for an early lunch. We certainly can’t pass up the BBQ oysters. After enjoying those great sweepers on 101, we pulled into Ferndale mid-afternoon. The village gets its name from the giant ferns that populated the area before English settlement in 1852. Prior to that, the Wiyot tribe were the only inhabitants. We checked in to the Victorian Inn (www.victorianvillageinn.com) and relaxed a bit before checking out what was happening downtown. The Inn is a very nice place with plenty of old time charm. The VI Restaurant is excellent, and we would have dinner there that evening. Main Street was closed when we arrived and had to detour around it. While unpacking, we saw lots of people mulling around in costume. There appeared to be some sort of street festival going on. As it turns out, it was the final destination of the Kinetic Sculpture Grand Championship (www. kineticgrandchampionship.com) At first, after seeing the sculptures (kind of looked like floats), we thought it was some sort of Memorial Day parade. In a way I guess you could at least call it a parade. After asking a few questions and getting a closer look at the vehicles, we were impressed with, not only the artwork, but the engineering that went into these

Unicorn projects. While not rocketry in design, all the sculptures must be people powered, and some of these contraptions were pretty elaborate. They would have to be. This race is a three-day event, beginning at the Arcata Plaza, 42 miles away.

On the first day, competitors will face open terrain, beaches and sand dunes before calling it a day in Halvorsen Park in Eureka. The second day will Josh see them having to navigate Humboldt Bay, and up over Hookton Hill. Yes, the sculptures must be able to cross over water with some sort of self-contained floating device. The Triathlon of the Art World. It was a very pleasant surprise to happen upon this event when we did. It was fun walking around town during the race and checking out the stores and all. When we got thirsty, the Palace Saloon was packed to the rafters, so we ended up at the Hotel Ivanhoe for refreshments. By the way, Ferndale is where Guy Fieri of Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives grew up. One of his first jobs was working at the Ferndale Meat Company. After, he started his own business, the Awesome Pretzel Company, before moving on to bigger and better things.

EVERYTHING TO LIGHT UP YOUR DYNA!

L

AST MONTH’S ISSUE, we did a review of the Custom Dynamics LED lights for our Indian Roadmaster. After using them for another month which also included a ride across the country (and back) – we can honestly say that we are amazed with their performance and we appreciate the opportunity to provide a first-hand product review for our readers. This month, we are giving a ‘lighting facelift’ to a HarleyDavidson DYNA. And again, we are just as impressed with the noticeable improvements that these upgrades made to the Dyna. I particularly appreciate the innovation of using automotive grade LED’s in the Custom Dynamics products (www.customdynamics.com) to make a motorcycle headlamp ‘light up’ a dark roadway. A huge plus comes the assurance that these lights will catch the attention of a motorist and for motorcyclists to ‘be seen’ while riding. Custom Dynamics simplifies the LED light upgrade with a plug and play installation, plus they offer other state-of-the-art products to complement each other like the Smart Triple Play which will turn your turn signals into running lights, and brake lights that can rapidly flash when you apply your brakes for added visibility. (This is also adjustable, so you can set the brake light to flash for a period of time that you feel is best). All LED’s come with a lifetime warranty, so you know that Custom Dynamics will stand behind their products. Another added bonus is that Custom Dynamics are American Made products.

Below is a list and description of the Custom Dynamics products that were installed on our 2004 Harley-Davidson Dyna. You can find Custom Dynamics products anywhere that Drag Specialties products are sold. • SMART Triple Play® : Get noticed with the Custom Dynamics® SMART Triple Play®! With a plug and play installation, convert rear (turn only) turn signals to Run/Brake/ Turn. Designed to work with incandescent bulbs or LEDs, the built in program mode allows for the running light intensity of the turn signals to be adjusted to match the running light intensity of the center taillight. Includes 10 User Selectable Flash/Strobe Patterns and SMART Function where Strobe/ Flashing will be disabled on Turn Signals if simultaneous braking and turning. Sealed, Weather Tight Case with 5 Year Warranty. • Custom Dynamics® Bullet Ringz™: For the ultimate LED Turn Signal conversion, choose Custom Dynamics® Bullet Ringz™! With a simple plug and play installation, riders are able to enhance their safety and visibility on the road while still maintaining a sleek, exceptional looking application. Each Bullet Ringz™ contains 7 Genesis LEDs embedded into the Outer Ring of the Aluminum Bezel, in addition to 24 Genesis LEDs in its center – all of which have a lifetime warranty against LED failure! Tailor the look even further with choice of Black or Chrome Aluminum Bezel Housing! • ProBEAM® LED Turn Signals: Custom Dynamics® has dedicated countless hours to developing the most innovative, superior product line the motorcycle industry has ever seen: state-of-the-art ProBEAM® LED Turn Signals. CHOPPER BOB MEMORIAL RUN

Gold Lake

Taleah and Chopper Bob

May 20 (Lincoln) The Feather River Canyon is located on Highway 70 between Oroville and Quincy in Plumas County. It is considered one of the most scenic routes in California. It’s also the lowest elevation east west through the Sierra Nevada. The canyon is filled with wildflowers, waterfalls, railroads with tunnels cut out of the steep rugged canyon walls and sometimes snow in the higher elevation.

Grizzly Creek Thunder Roads MagazineÂŽ Northern California 16

Each year, Bob and his wife Taleah would ride the canyon with friends. After yet another great ride in 2013, Bob and Taleah were blind-sided by a car that spun the bike out of control as he exited to his home off I80. He spent the last of his days in ICU and neural rehab, before finally passing on October 5, 2013. Taleah continues to ride the canyon every year along with friends in Bob’s honor. She has been asked numerous times “How can you continue to ride after going down with him on the bike and then losing your husband?” The answer is always the same…”How can I not ride?” Bob got this first chopper when he was 18 years old, and continuously rode his entire life, till he passed away at the age of 68. His wife Taleah also started riding when she was 18. The memorial ride has 2 meet up locations. One is at the Safeway parking lot next to the exit where Bob and his wife went down. The riders at this location ride to Clinton’s Custom Cycles in Lincoln to meet up with the remaining riders. Mike Clinton (owner of the Harley motorcycle shop in Lincoln) and Bob were close friends, and he opens his shop on the only day is closed to accommodate the incoming riders.

Stopping in Oroville for the last gas-up, and picking up a few more riders, they continue on into the canyon. A little less than 100 miles from their starting point in Sacramento/Lincoln – riders stop for lunch at the historic town of Belden. This year the riders were entertained by an artist creating spray paint art in a unique way. Due to time constraints, some riders decide to turn around and go back - while others continue onward into Quincy, and further. The Feather River Canyon ends in Quincy, but not the exquisite scenery. The ride goes on through Graeagle, over Gold Lakes into the super cool town of Downieville and back to Highway 49. It was another great day filled with lots of pictures of the intense scenery, and riding the canyon with other bikers. Hope to see you next year! OUR XCOUNTRY ROAD TRIP: PART ONE

California to North Carolina

FTER THREE and a half long years since we last saw our son Scott and his family, we decided that it was time to just make it happen, no matter what! I have always dreamed of riding across the country and since North Carolina was in the cards for us to see our family again…THAT was all the reason I needed to plan a motorcycle ride! We decided that Terri would stay back for a few days to run the TRM NorCal office and fly out later. This worked out great since she was not particularly fond of the tight schedule that I had laid out for the first half of the trip.

Scott is an active duty Marine, which means we had to plan our travels around his leave schedule. As it turned out, his leave and our print and distribution time of the May issue were very

close together. I knew in order to maximize my time with the family, I could not allow any grass to grow under my feet from the time I left NorCal until I arrived at the North Carolina coast. Trust me, I know this type of riding is not for everyone and some folks may think I am out of my mind, while others will see it as totally normal. I obviously fall into the latter category. There is a downside to riding this way though. First, you tend to ride by a lot of cool stuff to see on the road, so I forced myself to stop once in a while to check things out along the way. Secondly is that unless you are physically and mentally prepared for it, it can be downright dangerous. Once we start to get tired, our attention to details and possible hazards start to not be quite as obvious. Personally, I tend to enjoy and relish the extreme - that is just who I am.

Day 1 - California to Arizona On April 26 (Scott’s birthday), I pulled out of the driveway of our house in Folsom at 5am and pointed my Indian south down Hwy 99. I had two routes in mind north or south. Due to the possibility of snow in Colorado this time of year, I opted for the southern route that took me down to I40 and along the Mother Road - Route 66. A beautiful ride for sure. And it does not matter how well you plan out a trip - you should always leave room for the unexpected. Today was no exception to that rule with road construction through Arizona slowing my progress to a crawl. And no sooner than I broke free of the construction, I got hung up again by a forest fire outside of Flagstaff. So I rolled into my first stop in Winslow and called it a day around 8pm - much later than I had expected. But I still had a great day on the road logging in at a little over 700 miles for the day.

Day 2 - Arizona to TexaS Up at the crack of dawn, I rolled up my campsite and hit the road hoping to make it to just outside Oklahoma City. But when I stopped for gas in Amarillo, nice people warned me that I did not want to go very far east of there due to a bad thunderstorm heading that way. And they were right, I made it about another 30 miles east before deciding that I did not want to tangle with that monster. As the sun set, I held up in a little dive motel in Panhandle Texas. The owner of the motel was very nice and asked me if I would like to park my bike under an overhang by their residence to protect it from hail or anything getting blown around by the wind. I appreciated that very much.

Indian of Oklahoma City

Day 3 - Texas to Tennessee I could tell that the storm had blown over about midnight because the wind finally stopped whistling through the door of my room. So I was up early and back on the road at 5am to make up some road time, but unfortunately the wind in Texas had rattled a mechanical bolt loose on my windshield (the part that make the windshield raise and lower). I needed to find a dealership that had the part I had lost in stock. I rolled into the Indian dealership in Albuquerque, New Mexico, but had no luck there. They did not have the part. My next opportunity was Indian of Oklahoma City. They had the part, and got it quickly installed, so I was back on the road again. This minor repair caused me to continue to lose time. Side note, I had never been to Oklahoma before and thought it was way more beautiful than I had expected it to be. Plus the people there were very nice. I would definitely go back for a visit there. After that delay, I blasted through the rest of Oklahoma and the beautiful state of Arkansas and straight into Tennessee. Despite all of the delays for the day I was still able to log another 700 miles as I hung it up for the day in Lebanon, Tennessee.

Day 4 - Tennessee to North Carolina I had 805 miles left and I woke up feeling super motivated to get there today! So barring any more unforeseen issues - I figured I could do it! I rolled out at about 6:30 am and after riding 3-4 hours, I crossed into North Carolina. WoooHooo! Almost there I thought. But then I looked at my GPS that told me I had 8.5 hours to go. Side note: North Carolina is a much bigger state than it looks on a map. But I had the bit between my teeth and I was determined that THIS was the day. Sure enough, 8 hours later I arrived at their house which was about 3 minute drive from the beach. That was one hell of a great ride! Now I could spend some time to do some serious catching up with my son, daughter-in-law and granddaughters! Join us next month for our return road trip back to California this time with Terri. 7th Annual Good Ol’ Boys MC Veterans Memorial Run May 27 (Santa Rosa): Definition of “Good Ol’ Boy” is a man considered as being trustworthy and dependable because of his down to earth background and upbringing.

some pretty cool raffle prizes. I met up with GOBMC Vice President Ron Ogden, who gave me the rundown on the day’s events, along with a tee shirt and steak dinner ticket.

Seven years ago, the Good Ol’ Boys MC found out the Santa Rosa Veterans Memorial Building, was having a hard time making ends meet with the various events they put on to keep the Veterans Memorial functioning. I was able to talk with one of the GOBMC members, and he said “Thanks to the bikers and all that participate in this event, we raise more money for the Santa Rosa Veterans Memorial Building in this ONE event, than what they make all year with other events.

The run in itself was an awesome display of bikes 500+ strong, wrapped around the huge parking lot waiting to ride and pay their respect for the fallen heroes laid to rest at the Santa Rosa Memorial Park. When the bikers arrived at the cemetery, they gathered around for a brief but emotional ceremony complete with a color guard. After the ceremony, the riders received a white carnation to place on the headstones, to let family members know their loved ones were not forgotten.

Being directionally challenged, I ended up taking the scenic route. By the time I rolled in, the huge parking lot surrounding the Veterans Memorial was filled with bikes. The vendors lined up on each side of the stage. Everything from biker clothing to Veteran Organizations were in full operation. The bikers saddled up once again and continued to ride through scenic Sonoma County and stopping for a drink and fellowship at The Gun Club in Geyserville before returning to the event. Here Today, Gone Tomales

B

eing a self-proclaimed spontaneous adventurist on motorcycles, I always use the weather to dictate that days destination and thus subscribing to this philosophy, the weather gods told me Bodega Bay on the Sonoma Coast would be our destiny. One thing the gods don’t take into account using this theory, is Bay Area adventures never factor the exodus of folks in cages fleeing and returning the area with the same ideas. No sense worrying about that, I can address that with lane splitting when it happens. Hence I saddled up the Harley with my wife Penelope Pitstop and headed north. There are two scenic ways to get to this coastal wonderland of Bodega Bay, cut through San Rafael down Third St to Sir Frances Drake Blvd on to Point Reyes or venture a little further north and take Lucas Valley Parkway through Nicasio up to Valley Ford and up Highway 1. We opted for the Point Reyes route with our excitement set on hitting the Bovine Bakery of Point Reyes, quite possibly the best bakery this side of the Sierra Nevadas. You can never go wrong either way, but the Sir Frances Drake route takes you by the infamous Papermill Creek Saloon (www.papermillcreeksaloon.com) in Forest Knolls where wetting your whistle can quickly lead to becoming a barstool anchor with such historic surroundings keeping you in the moment. But not this day, we decided to carry on past the saloon while giving a wave to Hatt’s

Alfred Hitchcock and Mary

Motorcycle shop (www.hattsmotorcycles.com) on the other side from the saloon continuing west. Motoring down ‘the Drake’ passing through the town of Lagunitas (no brewery here? someone, missed that boat!) the road becomes narrower and less populated. Suddenly my throttle starts earning its keep! You begin entering the enchanted coastal forests of Northern California, a gift for motorcycles (and bicycles). Straddling the Lagunitas Creek while carving the twisting roads, you find yourself in the thick redwood groves of Samuel P. Taylor State Park. The journey slows down when reaching the camping community of Olema, just south of Point Reyes. Time to turn north and head to Point Reyes, one of my favorite towns that seems caught in a time warp from the 70’s. Entering this town settled by the gold rushers of the 1850’s, you are greeted with the “Old Western Saloon” (really, that is the name), but it was the Bovine Bakery that we came seeking. (www.bovinebakeryptreyes.com). Sure enough, you know you have found it by seeing the line of folks funneling out the door all waiting patiently and clamoring for the baked goods. Taking our rightful place in line, we got our breakfast delights and it didn’t disappoint. The Bear Claw and fruit slipper were washed down with Inca Peru coffee fulfilling our needs.

Now that the energy level was back, time to hit the scenic Highway 1 to venture up Tomales Bay. I must say there is something exhilarating about skirting by a bay full of oysters that gets me excited. The eatery towns are many along this route but a favorite of many bikers is Tony’s Seafood in Marshall. Unfortunately, it was closed with the sign indicating reopening in Spring 2018. Here’s hoping for favorable winds in the construction trade to get it done quick! With that behind us, we charted a new course ahead for the town of Tomales. Alas, pulling into this tiny town of about 200 souls, another roadside stop lie dead ahead up on the right- the historic William Tell House Saloon (Est 1877) A great place I remember for oysters and a cold one- but noooo, it can’t be! It was closed and up for sale no less. My heart sunk. Another treasured spot down. That’s the thing with these small towns, if you don’t get up there to visit often enough, they are here today and gone Tomales! Feeling somewhat dejected with my two favorite haunts closed up, I had to rethink a new plan. Just up the road I recalled being the small town of Bodega. The tiny town of Bodega is spotted about a ½ mile off the main Highway 1 not much further north of Tomales. I had ideas on checking out the site of the church and school used in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 thriller “The Birds”. There it was… settled up on the hill, looking down on the town with such an ominous feeling – luckily, not a flock of blackbirds in sight! Snapped a couple of pictures of the church, and spied a cool antique shop a few yards back up the road that we just had to check out. The proprietor had mannequins of Alfred Hitchcock and Tippi Hedren (she was conveniently perched in a phone booth with a blackbird on her head). Now that was a picture moment in my book. Time to continue north up Highway 1 to the spectacular fishing village of Bodega Bay. This is where the term microclimate was probably invented. Having just left the town of Bodega a few miles back where the sun shined with temps in the 70’s, here we were in Bodega Bay surrounded by a chilly fog with slight winds, temps hovering in the low 60’s. Brrr- right? If you happened to get this far north without lunch, it’s your lucky day as the choices are plentiful. With many eateries to choose from, including the Tides Wharf Restaurant (be prepared for crowds and waiting times because this was one of the shooting locations for “The Birds”) we skipped along and ventured a little further north along the coast to

main village. Keep heading up the hill on Highway 1 look for Eastshore Road on the left. Head down the hill to the bottom where you have a couple options, go left to Ginochio’s Kitchen and Gourmet Au Bay or continue around the bay on Westshore Rd to a few more local eatery spots like Fisherman’s Cove or Spud Point Crab Company. We had recently been to Fishermans Cove with Thunder Road NorCal friends Woody and Denise Wood feasting on the fish and oysters, but opted to try Ginochio’s - a BBQ Italian kitchen joint. We were probably too hungry and ordered with our stomachs and not our heads. Heck, we were so hungry that we didn’t even notice we ordered a plate full of meat and nothing else! Next time we will rethink that strategy. Having finished up, we mounted the Ultra and headed north to take in more Sonoma coastal splendor before heading west on Highway 116 to the warming temperatures of Guerneville and then down 116 south back towards Sebastopol. A little factoid about Sebastopol, it is the home of famous “Junk Art” creators Patrick Amiot and his wife Brigitte Laurent. These two artists have populated the community with junk art sculptures (check out Florence Ave next time through) where they take repurposed discarded metals and erect them into colorfully paint artful structures. Their pieces range from Batman to Babe Ruth, to a Holstein cow to a biker on a stretched out chopper. It is always fun to spot new sculptures as you pass though each time. Heading South down 101 through Petaluma and down through San Rafael takes us back to reality and the brutal return trip to the mecca of the East Bay over the Richmond Bridge where a third lane heading south was added (2pm to 7pm only) to relieve the constant back up that occurs around San Quentin. Of course, we always get to look forward to the dreaded 80 cluster luck to get head south down I880. Remember I said lane split! I do and if you don’t, you better learn quickly or you get to sit in miles of backups. Skimming past the myriad of cars stuck in gridlock traffic as we returned to civilization, you cannot help but get lost in your thoughts of knowing there lies a place uncluttered and full of beauty nestled in the rugged confines of the Sonoma Coast - a place to get away where only on a motorcycle you truly experience life in the slow lane. 2018 Sacramento Mile

I

have said it before and I will say it again, there are not too many sports out there that are as ‘spectator friendly’ as good old American Flat Track Racing. It happens when the biggest factory teams bring the world’s best riders to Sacramento’s mile long track at Cal Expo that spectators are in for a thrilling day of racing to say the least. Just as the heat races were kicking off, the large stadium was filling up fast while the race teams hustled in the pits to get the set up just right on their motorcycles for the next heat race. About half way through the day, the racers take a break from the race action and open the pits to their fans. What other sport out there lets you interact with your favorite athlete like this? Pretty cool, I have to say. It is always interesting to watch the fans mingle and take selfies with their favorite racers while behind them is their pits working franticly on the motorcycles to get them ready for the main events to come!

This is truly a family friendly event, I just love to see the excited reaction from the kids (and their parents too!) as the bikes come roaring down the straightaway at 140mph, before pitching the bike sideways in the dirt, sliding through the turn banging handlebars and shoulders along the way. Kids for some reason seem to have a big curiosity about motorcycles. You can always see them with their faces pressed up against the car window as we pull up to a stop light next to them. We always try to give them a little wave and usually will get a big grin in return. The races are like that - but with turbo power! I can’t help but think that I might be looking at a future Flat Track National Champion. Thunder Roads MagazineŽ Northern California 27

All of the big manufacturers were on hand with their race teams, plus the MSNBC film crew were there providing TV coverage which added more excitement to this great race! As the sun set on the day, it was Indian’s ‘Wrecking Crew’ that once again dominated the field which involved bragging rights and a hard fought battle between themselves. Indian came on the scene and defiantly moved the bar to a whole new level. Although, I have a gut feeling that after two years of dominance that the other teams will be stepping up to the plate with more competitive bikes soon. f you have been following the motorcycles that we feature in this magazine for a while, you may have noticed by now that TRM NorCal has a real appreciation for the bikes that are owner built in their garage, livingroom, kitchen or back yard. Wherever they can get the work done and bring a motorcycle back to life better than before. Tony Silva from Stockton is just that kind of rider having built more than a couple very nice bikes from home. This King to Glide project really caught my eye. Tony’s attention to detail is top notch and I love that he tries to only use HarleyDavidson parts on his projects. So take a close look at this beautiful ride that was once a broken down police Road King, that now has the look of a Road Glide right off the show room floor. Spectacular job on this one, Tony! This bike originally was a Reno PD Bike that blew up in Kingman, Arizona while owned by Tony’s step son who affectionately named the bike ‘Road Kill’. Tony bought the bike and rebuilt it from the ground up. Article and photos by Stan Hill / Model: Krys Kitten

O

H LORD, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz? My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends. Worked hard all my lifetime, not help from my friends, so Lord, won’t you by me a Mercedes Benz? Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a color TV? Dialing For Dollars is trying to find me. I wait for delivery each day until three, so oh Lord, won’t you buy me a color TV? Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a night on the town? I’m counting on you, Lord, please don’t let me down. Prove that you love me and buy the next round, oh Lord, won’t you buy me a night on the town? Although this is an awesome tune by the late and great Janis Joplin, it seems to be reality for some folks. Now, I have sang along with Janis many times when the song comes on the radio and the funniest thing about the whole song is at the end, when her last phrase is “That’s It” and she giggles. It’s almost as if she knows it’s just a silly tune. Here is a lady who had fame and fortune doing what she loved to do, and it still wasn’t enough. She was acclaimed as one of the most successful female artists of her time, launching three great albums with one waiting to be released in the studio. And yet, on October 4, 1970, she died of a heroin overdose. On the outside, it seemed she was living the dream, but on the inside, we would have to realize there was something missing. Now, I know firsthand the struggles of addiction and the lifestyle that brings many to their knees, incarceration and sometimes death. That is not what this article is about. This is a realization that contentment can be had. The lyrics of the song promote 3 things: 1) We tend to covet our neighbor’s things, meaning we have a 107, but my buddy has a 113 so

I need to pump my motor up. I have an Ultra, but that guy has a Screamin’ Eagle Ultra. Where once I had a huge smile about my beautiful Ultra, humanity says it’s not good enough anymore. 2) Success does not come easy! It takes WORK! That’s the 4-letter word of success. Ed McMahon is not coming anytime soon, so sitting on the couch waiting for someone to pay our way is not going to happen. How much do we really need anyway to be content? I would say, not much. And 3) Are we really waiting on the Lord to buy us the next round? To take us out on the town? Are we that lonely that we are asking the Lord to prove Himself by providing us selfcentered possessions and situations? God doesn’t give us the Screamin’ Eagle Ultra, Ed McMahon never shows up so we beg the Lord to MAKE US HAPPY by giving us a night on the town that will prove His love for us? Now I’m not saying He will not provide a way for us to acquire a Screamin’ Eagle Ultra, or even let us acquire some extra funding to make that happen through some hard work and dedication, as He has allowed many miracles to happen in my life that are really unexplainable. But, the principle I learned through all of this is that when I worked hard enough, dedicated my life long enough, made some better decisions, and I learned to be content with exactly what I had. Sure, I want nice things for myself and my family, but how much do we really need, not want? I still feel contentment on my ‘96 Fat Boy and my ‘06 Classic, and they get me to the same places my buddies with 2018 Screamin’ Eagles. Just without the payment! Ha ha ha... Just know the Lord loves you and wants the best for you. Give Him some time and you will have a life “Beyond Your Wildest Expectations”! Come visit Thunder Road sometime. Philippians 4:11-13: Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.

When getting lost is just what you need...

A

FRIEND OF MINE was showing me a sample of some art illustrations he wanted on his helmet. He said, “I wish I knew how to draw.” It made me think of all the painters who had some great ideas for paint themes, but who could not faithfully execute them. Their biggest stumbling block was that they could not draw. I told him, “We cannot all be Michelangelo, but there must be one hundred and fifty ways to transfer artwork.” We certainly do not have enough space in this column to go over each one, so I thought I would share just a couple of the most commonly used techniques.

18 Oceanfront Rooms Jacuzzi Suites

There is a special paper produced by a company called Saral (www.saralpaper.com) They manufacture transfer paper. What makes this paper special, is that it does not smear like carbon paper and it comes in a variety of colors. Any art or craft store will have this in stock.

In-room Fireplaces Sauna Rooms Available

Starting with a piece of tracing paper, place it over the desired image and trace it. Then, tape a contrasting color of Saral paper on your paint-ready surface. For example, if the paint surface is white, you would use black transfer paper. Put just a few pieces of tape around the perimeter to hold it in place. Make sure the transfer side of the paper is facing downward on the paint-ready surface. Carefully tape the traced image over the transfer paper. Trace over the image with a ball-point pen or sharp pencil. The new image that was transferred onto the paint-ready surface is water soluble.

High Speed WiFi

The benefits are: 1. Should you make a mistake, you simply remove the error with a damp paper towel. 2. It will not contaminate your other paints. This is only one of the many ways you can transfer your desired image from its origin and onto your paintready surface. In the next issue, I will present some other commonly used methods. PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT:

SHINE LIKE SILVER – FOR STEEL RIDERS

G

ot a motor…got your bucket…got your leathers…and got two hands full of jewelry— hard core biker haute couture. For many who have been long in the ‘ride’, this is a common style. And for those who have a bit of grit, there were always two, three or four rings or bracelets that illustrated his or her attitude or style. Big rings, heavy bracelets—not so much as jewelry—but a statement of intent! You could easily see the bright white of big silver rings and arm bands shining in the sun when they would ride by. True biker! Some riders would have big gold monolithic wads on one or two fingers…but at the price of ‘yellow’, these were the uncommon shine. Money better used for a new drive belt or that extra case of oil for a long run on an old leaker was of more imminent concern. But…Silver—Sterling Silver… there was something that was almost fairly affordable for many riders. Yet, a couple of hands full of big rings could end up costing a biker much of his beer money for the summer runs—and as a result many who looked enviously at the ‘bling’ just did not cave in to their desire to have a personal accessory statement regarding their lifestyle. Time and technology have moved along—and now there is a very easy way to afford your chic. Stainless Steel—the new biker Silver has hit the rallies running. Someone developed the skill to forge and cast this shiny, super durable metal into artistic forms, and it is selling like crazy in bike culture. The first time I viewed this new standard was in South Dakota a couple of years ago. A guy was going camp to camp with his bag of goodies—really nice stuff: but priced like precious metal… and people were paying him the ‘hit’ because it was unique. But, distribution has met demand and this past summer at The Black Hills Rally in Sturgis I met Joe Vissicchio from Crystal River, Florida (www.Joessteel.com) Joe had several store front booths selling knives, and other accessories--- but primarily his huge assortment of jewelry was his retail direction. What first drew me to step inside was pretty Elizabeth Crowe loudly hawking stun guns by offering to test drive one on me for free!!! Yep—that opened my eyes for sure, and that was when I saw all of the jewelry. And I found out the biggest ‘shocker’ in their booth was how affordable the stainless jewelry actually has become. In each of his booths, Joe had tens of thousands of rings, bracelets,

chains and pendants, in hundreds of styles and every size necessary. There were styles as tough as a junk yard dogs and as delicate as a butterfly; and every imaginable design in between. I was intrigued for sure as I had done two years of jewelry design and manufacture in college and the reality that steel was being as beautifully and delicately designed for wear simply amazed me. This Stainless steel jewelry was beautiful, and stays just that way because it is so damned durable. I was shown around by Daniel and Ray and it was explained that even this hard steel could be sized up quite well, which was good news for me, because I don’t have hands--- I have paws and always had to custom build my own rings. I found several rings I really liked, and these guys got to work and stretched them to fit the monsters I call fingers. And as amazed as I was at how this material could be so beautiful: when it came to price I could only smile and reach for my wallet. Rings in my size cost $27 to $30, and with my choice of a couple for each hand and two more massive bracelets I only dropped the money I would charge someone only to pen a “design” for a single piece of custom jewelry. I’ve run thousands and thousand of miles since I ‘got my new style on’, and with all of the clutch and brake lever pulling and throttle twisting I haven’t deformed or worn the jewelry a single bit. Everything looks as good as the moment I purchased it. Of course, I still make and wear special pieces of fine metal, but after running expensive jewelry on my rides for years and grinding them down through wear and abuse… Stainless Steel has become the new standard for my motorcycle jewelry. And my wife even commented that this jewelry is just as pretty as the Sterling and Gold jewelry I make. Some days I just really don’t like her that much any more. Although you will find steel jewelry booths at most large rallies, you don’t have to travel to Sturgis to be able to buy the new biker standard from them. If you can’t wait to make a purchase in person, there are plenty of sites on the web to fill your hands, wrists and neck with hard core, hard wearing show pieces. Take a look around… show your shiny side. Think a Good Thought! Article and photos contributed by Frank ‘Medicine Wolf’ Springer

Well then, go on.” After about 20 seconds of Pervo fondling she gets impatient and says, “Come on, how old am I, when was I born?” Pervo says “I reckon you to be in your mid 20’s, but you was born yesterday.” -------------------------------------------------------------A wife thinking she’s being very modern thinking treats her hubby to a birthday night at the local expensive strip club. At The Club, the Doorman says, “Hey, Jimbo, how ya’ been buddy?” The wife says “how does he know you?” and Jimbo replies, “I play football w/ him.” Once inside the Bartender says “Hey, Jimbo, you want the usual?” Jimbo turns to his wife and says “before you say anything he’s on the Darts Team.” Next a hot stripper yells down from the stage Hey, Jimbo, you craving the Special tonight?” The wife storms out the door dragging Jimbo by the collar and hails a taxi. Jumping in the taxi the Taxi Driver says, “Hey, Jimbo, you sure picked up a fugly one this time....”. Jimbo should be fine after his testicles return to their individual sacks. -------------------------------------------------------------Three bulls heard the Rancher was bringing in another bull onto the ranch. First bull: “I’ve been here 5 years. I’m not giving this new bull any of my 100 cows.” Second bull: I’ve been here for 3 years and have earned my right to 50 cows. I’m keeping all my cows.” Third bull: I’ve only been here a year and so far you guys have only let me have 10 cows. I may not be as big as you two but I’m keeping all 10 of my cows.” Just then a shiny cattle hauler pulls up in the pasture carrying the biggest bull the 3 bulls had ever seen. At 4,700 pounds, each step this massive animal takes strains the steel ramp. (cont’d. ) First Bull: “Well, I think I can spare a few cows for our new friend.”

Second Bull: “I actually have too many cows to take care of properly. I can spare a few. Not looking for any trouble.” They both look over at the third bull and see him hoofing up the dirt, shaking his horns back and forth and snorting as loud as he can. First Bull: “Son, don’t be foolish --- let him have some of your cows and live to tell about it.” Third Bull: “Hell, he can have all 10 of my cows. I’m just making sure he knows I’m a damn bull.” --------------------------------------------------------------A woman goes to the Doctor worried about her husband’s temper. The woman says, “Doc, I don’t know what to do. Every day my husband seems to lose his temper for no reason. It kinda’ scares me.” The Doc says “I have a cure for that. When it seems that your husband is getting angry, just take a glass of water, take a big gulp and swish and swish but don’t swallow it until he either leaves the room or calm down.” Two weeks later the woman comes back to the Doc looking fresh and relaxed. “Doc, that was a brilliant idea! Every time my hubby started losing it I just swished and swished my mouthful of water but never swallowed and he just calmed right down. How does a glass of water do that?” The Doctor says, “The water itself does nothing. It’s keeping your mouth shut that does the trick.” --------------------------------------------------------------Please pray for my wife. A bee stung her on the forehead and she is in I.C.U. She almost died. Luckily, I was close enough to her and was able to hit the bee as hard as I could with a shovel at the very second that the bee stung her. --------------------------------------------------------------Leroy slides off his trunks at the beach and places his hat over his privates. BIKER BAND REVUE:

Dust & Diesel band - Outlaw Country Rock

F

The Mission Behind Their Music

RONT MAN and founder of Dust & Diesel, Talon Weston served 4 years active duty in the US Army with the 10th Mountain Infantry Division, and 4 inactive. Talon served 2003 and 2004 in Afghanistan, in Operation Enduring Freedom tour. For 2 years after his return, Talon couldn’t seem to get a grasp on society. He began having trouble sleeping, and waking up to the explosive sounds of war. The Army gave a little information on PTSD, but the attitude among the men and Talon was “suck it up”. His life went downhill and he found himself living on a cattle ranch in a 16-foot trailer, battling drugs, alcohol, hotheaded women and isolation. Eventually Talon found his therapy in music, he started writing songs again, and strumming away on an old guitar…three chords and the truth, as he put it. Talon’s music turned his bleak circumstances around, and he started going to open mikes. Before long Talon started engaging with people again and having a few good times. Talon reached out to Eric Lewis, Founder and President for Vet - Traxx Project (www.vet-traxxproject.org) sharing that “it was like living in shadows” until his music helped him to “Rise From Shadows”. VTP is a non-profit organization that operates a recording studio for disabled veterans as top priority and others to track and record music as a means of therapy. Eric has tons of endorsements and hook ups in the industry that he uses to help the Vet-Traxx Project. Eric would like to give a shout out to all of their sponsors: Vario Strings, CAD Audio, Schecter Guitars, Cymbolt, Auralex Acoustics, Daddario, Focusrite, Mapex, Nugen Audio, On-Stage, Roland, Seymour Duncan, SKB Cases, Trx Cymbals and Slate Digital. As Talon’s mission began to unfold, to bring not only Veterans, but anyone “living” with trauma induced PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) to “Rise From Shadows”. Rise From Shadows is designed to provide live music events where all are invited to be encourage through our struggles that we are not alone and we can live within the realm of happiness and enjoy together the common interest of music and the comfort of an All American Life! Dust & Diesel’s long time goal is to do four “Rise From Shadows” tours a year, with original mastered material by Dust & Diesel. Eventually they would like to donate to homeless veterans and have tent cities all across America, through American Son, where they will be eligible for donations by the military through their GP Medium (U.S. Largest stockpile of military tents est. 1997 located in North Carolina specialized in remote camp equipment available to all). These tent cities would be for veterans on the streets with drug and alcohol addictions that stems from PTSD to come and get the mental help they need and to…”Rise From Shadows” Talon shared an experience he had last summer, while driving in the Carmichael area. The temperature was a sweltering 105 degrees, when he saw a homeless veteran standing on the sidewalk.

He pulled over and invited the vet to hop in and go get something to eat with him. Talon realized instantly that the man was so heat exhausted that he was unable to even make eye contact. The vet just stood there with the discipline of a soldier. Talon had to call 911 to get immediate help for the man. This experience confirmed to Talon that he had to do what he could to take American Son PTSD Awareness to the stage. Within the message of the music Dust & Diesel focus on rocking the stage with great originals, not sad songs about PTSD, war, etc. They want their audience to leave their show with good memories and great songs. But rest assured they are using their extraordinary musical abilities to help raise the funds for VTP and American Son’s war on PTSD awareness and anyone that suffers from a traumatic experience. Chris Alosi (Bass Guitar) grew up in a very talented family. His father was a big band singer, mother played the piano and his sister also sings for a local cover band. Music was played more often than the TV. Chris started playing the drums when he was in 3rd grade, trumpet from the 5th to 8th grade. Chris still has his trumpet and can play it if he had to. In high school, a friend had a band and needed a bass guitar. He asked Chris if he would play. He replied that they would have to fire the drummer. No we need a bass player, don’t know about that. He ended up using the school band guitar and amp. Today, he still plays the bass and considers it his first love. Dean Van Gelder (Guitar) picked up the guitar because of the years of listening to Eddie Van Halen. He heard Eddie Van Halen say he could get girls with guitars, so Dean decided to learn the guitar so he could pick up girls to “It works” he said with a smile. He, like Eric says that music is therapy to him too; “otherwise I would probably be on the 6 o’clock news for something”… Dean was in the Army. Eric “Spaz” Lewis (Drums / Founder and President of Vet-Traxx Project) was always getting in trouble at school for tapping on anything and everything. Santa Claus gave him his first drum kit at 13, but it wasn’t until he joined the Navy that he took the drums seriously. That was a bad time. You’re doing military stuff, you don’t have a life. But the base where he was stationed in Kingsville, Texas, saw that they were pretty good, so they cleared out a room in the barracks for them to practice in. In the 90’s, he heard the band Korn, and drummer, David Silveria. Last year he along with another band got to open up for Mr. Silveria. Even though David Silveria is his drum god, he likes to take in other drummers as well. Taking a little bit from each Eric has developed his own unique style. Dust & Diesel is different as it serves multiple purposes. Dust and Diesel have a single out and is available on iTunes titled Dust & Diesel. They recently cut a 5 song EP called Full Throttle coming out Fourth of July of this year. Article and photos contributed by Taleah Ebey / T3 Design Studios
