uckle up folks – the month of August is jam packed with some really fun upcoming events! Let’s start off with all of you heading off to Sturgis and to the Buffalo Chip in particular with acts like Kid Rock, Miranda Lambert, Willie Nelson, Lynyrd Skynyrd and 3 Doors Down - it is going to be an epic 35th year celebration! But for those of you that are sticking to the home front, don’t despair – there is plenty to do and see...just pick a recently published day ride or plan an overnighter route to re-trace one of the great RIDE DESTINATIONS that our contributors Chuck and Cindy Loseth have shared with us in previous issues! Or you can help Make-A-Wish a reality for a child diagnosed with a life threatening medical condition by joining TRM NorCal, Folsom Harley and Jackson Rancheria Casino Resort on August 14th for the 2nd Annual Wishes on Wheels ride (formerly the Walt Gray Ride). There is nothing more rewarding than bringing a smile to a kids face that is faced with challenges that most of us can’t imagine. The money raised by this event is used to grant a wish for a child and their family in Northeastern California/Northern Nevada. Join us as your generosity is presented to a local Wish child and their family to make their wishes a reality. And on August 20th is FXR’s of California Grudge Races are coming to Sacramento Speedway and this event is going to be packed with non-stop entertainment with everything from a FXR and DYNA bike show to stunt teams, live music and drag racing...grudge match style! This is going to be a day for NorCal to remember - so make sure you are there! Another thing to put on your radar is the new model year of motorcycles that will be revealed later in the month. It is always exciting to see what Harley Davidson has in store for the upcoming year! The wait is almost over, so get out to your local dealership around the end of August to see what’s new. And while you’re there...the September issue will just be hitting the newstands, so remember to pick one up and go LIKE US our Facebook page at “Thunder Roads Northern California”. FXR’s of California:

GRUDGE RACES

M

ark your calendar for August 20th to be at the Sacramento Raceway for a one of a kind event that is going to be a fun-filled day that you do not want to miss! The evolution of this event started three years ago by organizers Dana Levine and Debra Nathanson. These two ladies met thru the FXR’s Facebook group page after Dana posted that her bike had been stolen. The good news and thanks to some keen eyes out there, Dana’s pink frame bike was quickly located and returned back to its rightful owner. Dana and Debra wanted to express their appreciation and came up with idea to host an event for others that also loved their FXR’s and for the FXR friends that helped return the bike back to Dana. This Harley-Davidson model is widely recognized as the best handling motorcycle to ever come out of its line-up. Now if you missed your chance to buy one don’t worry because the Chopper Guys in Vallejo are once again building this frame that is in such big demand and as you might expect they have improved upon the original.

Mark your calendars for August 20th , there will be a huge bike show, food vendors, beer and live music along with Jason Pullen Stunts and his team of skilled stunt riders to blow everyone’s mind with their insane stunting skills.... on Harley-Davidsons, of course! Come on out and hang out with us! You don’t want to be that guy standing by listening to all the stories from this event - AFTER the fact! SEE YA THERE!

This event is growing quickly from its humble beginnings at Port Costa with approximately 150 people showing up. The following year at Iron Steed Harley-Davidson in Vacaville it was a much bigger turnout of around 1000; up to last year’s off the charts turn out at Kirk Taylor’s Custom Design Studio with approximately 3000 - 5000 people showing up to be a part of all that was going on! It was after that massive turnout last year, that all involved realized a bigger venue would be necessary to keep the event growing and going; so the decision was made to team up with the Chopper Guys in Vallejo. By teaming up with the Chopper Guys owner, Mark to help to take this event to the next level, the folks at the Sacramento Raceway were contacted to incorporate even MORE fun to include Grudge Races as well as a top fuel motorcycle race exhibition. Thanks to the legendary Chicago Joe making an appearance to really bring some thunder!

T

his is one of two FXR RIDE PRIDE features this month in honor of the upcoming FXR’S of California Grudge Races at the Sacramento Raceway on August 20th. It is only fitting that one would be from our good friends Kirk and Lisa Taylor over at Custom Design Studios in Novato (www.customdesignstudios. com). You might recall that this shop hosted last year’s FXR’s of California event. Not only was this a super fun day, but the event was off-thehook with way more of a turnout than anyone had expected. Kirk and Lisa took it all in stride and handled it with class as they always do. Kirk Taylor has long been a big advocate of the FXR model and his shop Custom Design Studio has several bikes that have been rebuilt into absolute dream machines. It is Kirk’s obvious passion for this bike that he is once again a big part of this up and coming event. Make sure you join us on August 20th to see more of the bikes from Custom Design Studios. Custom Design Studio is a full service shop, a place where you can get the simple things like oil and tires, but they will also work closely with you to come up with a full one off custom or customize your current ride into a total head turner. Everything from fabrication all the way through paint is done right here in their Novato location at 56 Hamilton Dr. Suite A. Give them a call or swing on by and check out what they can do for you. Back It Up!

fter eight years in the Marine Corps, a good friend of mine went to work as a city cop in a town that could only be described as a perpetual combat zone. He survived to retire after 25 years and after being shot, stabbed, run over, you name it, his body is letting him know where he stands. He’s still riding his bagger but maneuvering it around is getting tougher by the year. Enter Champion Trikes Reverse Gear Kit. Although the intent is for use in trikes, these are a great fit for Once the gears are in five and six speed two wheelers as well. place, the reverse gear Installation is pretty straight forward. I would recommend you drop a few bucks ($35ish) on the Champion special tool (#RG-100-100). This is used to apply torque to one of the gears. In their installation instructions, they do indicate that a Snap-On Oil Filter Tool (#FWA62121). I can’t vouch for the Snap-On tool, but during our install a similar device was used with poor results. The claws could not handle the amount of torque and ended up slipping. There is no doubt the quality of the Snap-On product is significantly better, and according to Champion, works well. Just to be on the safe side, we’ll be using the Champion product on our next install. You can plan on four to five hours for the project. Removal of the clutch release cover is required so in most cases the exhaust system will have to be removed. Once the main and countershaft Nylock nuts are removed, two gears will be installed in their place. Attention to detail is especially crucial while installing the small gear on the main shaft. You’ll have to drill two holes where the set screws will eventually be threaded.

Watch the depth! You don’t want to drill into the bearing. I checked the depth frequently while drilling the holes to ensure they went to the bearing race and no further.

housing can be installed. At this stage in the assembly you can then see how this trick invention really works. The idler gear that connects the two shaft gears will impart spin in the opposite direction. The transmission, while in neutral, will rotate the final drive in reverse as the clutch is engaged. The clutch and throttle are used in tandem very similar to the way they are used when starting from a dead stop in first gear. Read the instructions very carefully for the install and operation. If the operational sequence is not followed exactly as described, damage to the transmission can occur. Here’s a look at the finished product. Very cool! Photo5

26th Annual

PACIFIC COAST DREAM MACHINES April 24 (Half Moon Bay): Sunday, Sunday, Sunday…Get ready fans, for the biggest collection of dream machines east of the Pacific Ocean! All assembled at the annual Pacific Coast Dream Machines festival (www. dreammachines. miramarevents.com) And so it was, the most eclectic, exciting, unusually motor powered…and some non … kaleidoscope collection of machinery gracing the grounds of this typically quiet little city nestled at the Half Moon Bay Airport strip. Thousands poured in off Highway 1 to get a close up glimpse of some truly spectacular hotrod cars, vintage planes, motorcycles - old and new, trucks and old fashion marvels of mechanization. The winds were blowing steadily this day, but not enough to discourage the crowds from flocking to this Dream Machine affair. The Willits Roots of Motive Power steam engine display was memorizing to watch, but like a moth to a flame, one could suddenly be drawn along with the flowing crowds over to M1 Kustoms of Redwood City, where a tent showcased cool M1 shirts, hot motorcycles, and the chief draw…a rockabilly model posing for the crowds. Regaining the senses, moved along over to Hollister Indian and Power Sports to gawk at the booth full of Indian Motorcycles and of course chat with owner Rey Sotelo, who always has interesting things he is working

on. Many exhibits and so little time to check them all out. Continuing on through the boulevard of rods and cycles, spied a truly spectacular custom painted macabre Virgin Mary adorning an S&S Chopper –wow! Then got excited spying a rare running Fiat X19, a car with a name befitting of a NASA rocket! Then…over there, some Old 40’s Chevy primered pickups, then head on a swivel and body followed to check out a 67 Shelby white and blue iconic GT-350, and once again pulled in another direction, over to the jaw dropping Bonneville speed record rocket motorcycle- the Ack Attack, a world land speed record super streamliner … all great examples of raw heart pounding horsepower machines exemplifying the talents and ingenuity of Americans that strive to build things that go fast, go far and even go up!

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 12

And when you think you’ve ventured down all the taxiways and seen it all, up ahead in the cordoned off grassy strip was a site to behold, the likes of a machine not seen in any of my travels in this great country-Wild Bills Tattoo Uni-motorcycle drag race machines. These bizarre contraptions can be best described as a motorcycle with skis on the front instead of a wheel. It made for some exciting drag racing, even when one of them careened off course narrowly escaping dangerous obstacles. Oh, if that wasn’t enough thrills, their in the distance was the Metal Mulisha’s pounding motorcycle stunt jump show… whose daredevils made it look so easy, but wouldn’t suggest the kids try it at home. When you tired of looking at the spectacular machines on the tarmac, you could set a spell and gaze to the blue skies and marvel at the Historic Military Aircraft flying in formations in Memory of Eddie Andreini Sr., WorldRenown Aerobatics Pilot. Another impromptu air show was going on at the same time when the biplanes rides thrilled their paying patrons by guiding their airships into the wind high above our heads as if they were not moving like seagulls along the coastal cliffs, and without warning would make dive bombing maneuvers to set up landings at the airstrip

in front of us awe inspired on lookers. It would be hard pressed to soak in all this wonderment in the 6 hours the event is held, so the best recommendation if you plan to attend the “Coolest Show in Earths “27th annual event is to take your own 2 wheeled dream machine to skirt the throngs of vehicles heading to this event. And as a bonus, motorcycles get a close up parking spot. Less time on the road to get in and out will give you more time to bewonder amongst these amazing spectacles of marvel and engineering. HOLLISTER RALLY 201

July 1 – 3 (Hollister) It was without a doubt that Hollister was the place to be for motorcycle enthusiasts during this patriotic holiday. Riders came from far and wide to be a part of this historic biker celebration. The sheer number of bikes and bikers was quite impressive and it was for good reason too. Riders from California are hungry for an event of this magnitude – a BIG rally…like other states have across the country. There is a lot of reasons why it is difficult to do so in California, but with the collaboration from the City of Hollister and their wise decision to bring in an event promoter with a respectable resume and organizational expertise that Roadshows, Inc brought to the table - the stage was set for an outstanding 3 days in the heart of California’s central valley! Hats off to the Roadshows crew for pulling this all together and giving us a great rally in California! Not to mention, it doesn’t hurt to have the support of the host community along with its local businesses like Corbin Seats to openly welcome

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 16

16: Where It All Began the throng of bikers making the trek to visit their region. During the rally, the Corbin Seats facility is surrounded by vendor booths outside and this year, Jason Pullen Stunts was wowing the crowd with his insane riding skills. Inside there was live music and the facility is open to the public for self guided tours to witness firsthand the workmanship behind the famous Corbin Seat. What an operation! Not too far down the street is Hollister Powersports where the Victory and Indian motorcycle demo fleet was on site again this year for riders to come by to swing a leg over to find out firsthand what the buzz is about with these great American-made bikes. There was also a booth downtown at the Vets Hall to see TRM NorCal’s July RIDE PRIDE - Indian Chieftain Darkhorse “The Redeemer”. The Vets Hall was kind of the center or focal point of the Rally this year. At the Vets Hall on Friday, Mondo Porras of Denver Choppers hosted an outstanding Vintage Bike Show. This show brought in some of the coolest choppers and bobbers that you could see anywhere and was a huge success. On Saturday afternoon the Vets Hall was once again the center of the rally attention with baggers and extreme customs as the Corbin Bike Show was relocated downtown headed up by Mondo, Les Covington and the sanctioned judges from IMBBA (International Master Bike Builders Association). Just around the corner from the Vets Hall, Harley-Davidson Motor Company brought in various models from their demo fleet. And for those experiencing mechanical issues over the weekend, Benito and his crew from Thunder Road Motorcycle Shop were open to help out-of-towners with their rides. Over on Seventh Street, Big Bear Choppers were on hand supporting the guys from Straight Up SJ as the stunt teams title sponsor. And although the area for the team to perform their stunts was quite small, the guys pulled it off with great skill and the crowd was very impressed with their ability to wheelie and make sliding 180 degree turns in that confined space and their performances were off the hook! The Globe of Death was also on Seventh Street and you could watch motorcycles defying gravity as they spun their bikes around inside a small metal globe. continued... Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 17

Another highlight was some really good music acts like Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers hitting all your ZZ Top favorites, Motley Cruella - an all girl Motley Crue cover band, a Santana Tribute Band - Caravanserai who drew a huge crowd and sounded like the real deal! On Saturday evening, Savannah Blue impressed the central valley crowd as they busted out some good ol’ southern rock with their “spot on” Molly Hatchet and The Allman Brothers tribute tunes! What a show! Thanks to all who worked their tails off so we could all have a safe and fun place to go celebrate with so many biker friends during the Independence holiday weekend in Hollister. We are already looking forward to the 2017 Hollister Rally! If you are looking for another good time, make sure you come out to Street Vibrations - Fall Rally on September21st thru 25th, as our friends at Roadshows will once again be ready to let the good times roll in Reno. Article and photos by Stan and Terry Hill. Additional photos contributed by Taleah Ebey of T3 Design Studios.

Editors Note: Kudos to our riding buddies, Taleah and Sherry for keeping up with TRM NorCal’s hectic media schedule. It was a pure joy watching as these two ladies experienced the Hollister Rally for their first time! Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 18

3 little Indians

Scooters Cafe patio

3rd Annual Nor-Cal Motorcycles Poker Run June 18 (Paradise): A fast moving summer storm rolled through Northern California bringing with it a torrential downpour which caused some concern to Robb Curtis, the owner of Nor-Cal Motorcycles and his crew of volunteers. As it turned out, the weather was absolutely perfect for the ride route that was pre-planned for us. Our first stop was up Hwy 70 to Scooter’s Café, a TRM NorCal advertiser/sponsor and long standing biker hotspot at the foot of the Sierra. We all hung out shooting the breeze and had a bite to eat and a drink, before heading back down into the valley and making stops at the historic Empire Club in Durham that has been here for over 100 years. Then over to Scotty’s Landing that is set right on the Sacramento River – it’s a nice place to get a meal, cool off and relax alongside the river. Next stop was the Tackle Box in Chico, this is the kind of place where you can have a cold beer, toss your peanut shells on the floor while you wait for your meal to be served. Big and rustic this sports bar has it all. The last leg of the day was a scenic ride up Hwy 32 into the mountains were the cool air was refreshing and a big party was awaiting us at the Bambi Inn. Hippie Brad, Robb and the rest of the volunteers had been hard

at work preparing a great meal for everyone to enjoy. On stage, it was the Charlie Brechtel Band keeping everyone’s feet moving. The setting was perfect with a huge American flag as a back drop above the patio out back and Bambi Inn owners Tom and Connie along with their staff were keeping the adult beverages a flowin’. After the raffle drawing and band break, the president of Chapter 582 of the Vietnam Veterans of America - Carl (Butch) Fredrickson got up and presented Robb with an appreciation trophy for organizing this much needed fundraiser. Carl shared a recent encounter about one of our vets and his family like so many that it’s a daily struggle…just to get by. After the Vietnam Veterans of America heard about his situation, they went out and furnished their apartment for them. This is the kind of impact that showing up and raising money for this group has on our veterans and the lives of their family. Once the Vets finished delivering all of the furnishings to the family, Carl shared their first response with us saying that “this was the only time that anyone had been nice to them” Hearing that struck a chord with me instantly, I felt that it is a big disgrace that in this country our vets can be treated so poorly. Fortunately,

“F

REDWOOD RUN 2016

irst time to Redwood Run?” …” Yep”… ”Did you have fun?” … ”Well, here’s a photo of my buddy – standing naked and talking to a bush” “We’ll be back next year!” -Yes- they had a saddle bag of fun at Redwood Run 2016.

Fun is a smile and a good memory. And for true motorcycle riders, a rally with some music, a place to put up a tent, boobs and beer and the roar of V-twins is all it takes to have fun. Though the history of the exact incept date of the first Redwood Run is muddied by the two rallies held without name preceding the “1st Annual” poster being nailed to a telephone pole: for the past 39 years the Redwood Run Motorcycle Rally has been a Northern California icon of true old school ride-in bikers. Trust me on this one- it would break my heart to see this long tradition go the way of so much of American biker history. There is really a lot of fun to report here from this year. This year the sell out prepay of the 500 early entry passes, which allowed an extra night of controlled mayhem at the Redwood Run campground that included a spaghetti dinner and a movie for those who made the roaring trek in when the gates opened on Thursday at 4pm. Many of you may not know that it’s the pre-pay ticket sales that is collected to fund booking bands and entertainment up front. Most big

name bands won’t even consider playing a venue without that money in hand prior to traveling to the show. This is a business for them and getting stiffed by a promoter after spending thousands of dollars of their own money in travel expenses and paying to ship stage props and instruments to the venue—to wind up being greeted with “sorry, I don’t have the money” was a lesson learned generations ago by performers… and charity event or not—they may cut their price a bit—but will only appear when paid ahead of time. It was by raising the extra funds up front by offering this new ‘early-entry’ sales model and cutting the entertainment budget, the bands were booked and the Redwood Run committee was able to clear the debt from 2015 and move forward with this year’s rally. Outside the extra money raised as noted above, only 1236 tickets were sold prepaid to the Kiwanis who put on this event to help fund charities in the Humboldt area. An additional 200 or so tickets were sold by outside interests and approximately 400 entries were sold at the gate. The music this year was comprised of both local and national talent- unknown amateur and top shelf name bands. Anyone who did not just about fall over at the spectacular performance of Jack Russell and his band Great White, and the off-the-hook guitar work of Ronny Lochner …well, there just isn’t an explanation to what is wrong with those type

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 26

of people. The music rolled on the stage from beginning to end and this year I didn’t listen to anyone who could keep me from smiling, tapping my foot or dancing around like a maniac. Charlie Brechtel, Fryed Brothers, Savannah Blue, Amanda Gray & Whiskey Savage, and April Moore and Ranch Party, and 8 other bands played well into each night and then The Red House opened with …well… girls taking their clothes off— oh my! I’ve covered stages and entertainment since Hendrix back in 1970 and there was nothing to be embarrassed about in this year’s music line up. The Eel River was up and running clear and just warm enough, and more tents were pitched down on the banks than in years past... and of course clothing was an option that many simply ignored. Food, beer and wine…yes, the price was up but, once again the word “charity” rings out and these prices were a bit less or around the price you’d

pay for them at most sporting events these days. And all of the profit in the beer sales went to kids charities around that area…so you have that. This is an old school biker rally…like I said, some music, beer and boobs…and oh yeshanging out with real bikers. Prices go up, and things cost more… from the first year of this rally to the second year, the price of entry went up over 33% in one year. The Redwood Run Motorcycle Rally didn’t advertise ‘top name bands” to entice people to attend – the posters simply read- “Live Band”…and people came by the thousands. Maybe that was when motorcycle riders were actually bikers. Or it may have been, the first year’s $5 entry fee…but $6.50 for the second year is still a 33+% rise. If you like the Redwood Run and want it to continue--contact them and buy your ticket as soon as they will allow you to- and make sure all your friends do too. Don’t put off going to the Redwood Run again… this is the last old school motorcycle rally in the west! It is in the biker’s hands to make this rally happen year after year…I’m doing my best, you should too. Article and photos contributed by Frank ‘Medicine Wolf’ Springer - Think a good thought! 1941 INDIAN PROTOTYPE

September 1, 1939 marked the start of World War II. World War II is often said to be the hey-day of the military motorcycle, but it was actually a time of reduced combat roles compared to World War I. Motorcycles would continue to play a role in supporting the Allied troops, just as they had in the First World War; however, the capacity at which motorcycles participate in the war are different this time. Still valuable for courier duties, scouting, and reconnaissance motorcycles would need some improvements this go-around if they were to remain useful to the military. Two key players would remain prominent in the American motorcycle industry during the war, Indian and Harley-Davidson. These two were at war themselves, but would none the less make advancements to their production lines and serve the Allied forces well. The Allied troops discovered early in the war that their motorcycles were technologically behind when compared with captured German motorcycles. So what does one do in this situation? Well, you keep the captured bikes and send them back home of course. The motorcycles were dismantled and reverse engineering was used to recreate the modern motorcycle for ourselves. In the 1930’s and 40’s the advanced engineering seen in the BMW motorcycle was unprecedented. Basically, to an American engineer at the time, the idea of a shaft drive and telescoping forks was a little like approaching the concept of teleportation today, we can envision the idea, but have a snowballs chance in Hell of actually creating it. But that’s stealing you may say, .but such is the product of war. And what the hell, we got some damn good scooters out of the deal. So, first up is Harley-Davidson. Usually leading Allied convoys in recovered territory was “The Liberator”, also known as the H-D WLA. First produced in 1940, the WLA

underwent several modifications in order to better serve the Allies. Due to logistical needs the air filter was replaced with an oil-bath air cleaner for ease of maintenance. Rather than have to stock replacement filters, the rider could in essence “freshen up” his filter by adding regular motor oil. The crank case was also redesigned to reduce water intake so that the motorcycle could reportedly ford sixteen inches of water without stalling out. So what exactly IS the WLA? W is indicative of the family of motorcycle, this being the newest incarnation at the time, a 45 cubic inch flathead. L indicates “high compression”; in the usual H-D scheme (the “low compression” W model was only briefly available). A is for Army. H-D would similarly produce a slightly different model with big twin parts for the Canadian military. The WLA was originally produced in small numbers for general military expansion, but would reach nearly 90,000 produced by the close of the war. The WLA sported a springer front suspension with a side-valve design engine, used for its dependability rather than power, and would remain in production until 1973 in the Servi-Car. The HarleyDavidson WLA would become THE iconic United States military motorcycle of World War II. At the same time Harley was hard at work, Indian was also mass producing two-wheeled assistance for the troops. During World War II, Indian made a de-tuned Sport Scout for Allied Army called the 640. The 640 embodied a 750 cc/45 cubic inch power plant. 6 refferd to the model and 40 to the year of manufacture (i.e. a 341 is a 1941 Indian Chief). In addition to the 640, Indian made many model 741’s. The 741 was a 30.50 cubic inch/500 cc model. This model lacked greatly in the speed department, but was extremely reliable. In fact, many have survived across the pond. The 500 cc model earned its own nickname, several in fact. The

HD 1942 WLA

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 28

military referred to them as the 741b, while civilians called them “thirty-fifties”, “Junior Scouts”, or “pony Scouts”. Indian Chiefs were sold to the United States Army, in addition to the Australians, Canadians, and the French military. So what ever happened with that intel we received in the form of confiscated BMWs? Well let me tell ya a little about that. Harley incorporated the engine, forks, and shaft drive design exactly from the BMW design, resulting in the XA. The XA was a two-wheeled machine far superior to any American motorcycle in production at the time. Indian also took a thing or two from the krauts and created its own advance military machine, the 841 (complete with a hand clutch and foot shift). But beyond the 841, Indian developed in their factory a secret factory prototype; prototypes that came to be known as the Experimental Fours, that were rarer and much faster than the 841. In 1941 Indian completed its Indian Four prototype. It was an awesome 800 cc OHV Four engine, and used the 841 frame, while adding one more advancement; a shaft drive. So why weren’t these modern marvels more popular? Well, unfortunately, JEEP began production of military vehicles, which were ultimately deemed more efficient by the military, and only about 1,000 each of Harley-Davidson and Indian’s futuristic bikes were ever manufactured.

Story has it that demobilized troops began buying cheap military surplus motorcycles after returning home. The only problem with the military issue bikes?? You guessed it, awkward windshields, ammunition racks, and unnecessary bags. So what did these inventive Vets do with their less than desirable surplus purchases? Well they chopped off everything they didn’t want, and revamped their motorcycles into the bikes of their dreams. And another birth has occurred in the motorcycle history family, the birth of the “chopper” and the eventual rise of “Biker” culture in the 1950’s. Looks like the perfect place to start snooping around next time. Articles and photos contributed by Melanie Schwarte of Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa.

So what happened post war to the nearly 180,000 motorcycles produced for and/or used in the Second World War? Old bikes like these aren’t exactly the easiest to come by. Well, those troops had developed affection for two-wheeled travel and the attraction to motorcycles was spreading far and wide.

American Legion Riders Honor Our Fallen ALR Chapter 383 rolling along the Avenue of Flags

May 28 (Fair Oaks): The 18th Annual Memorial Day Ceremony was held at the Fair Oaks Cemetery. Hundreds of flags lined the roadway of the cemetery deemed “The Avenue of Flags.” A parade of American Legion Riders (ALR), Chapter 383, rolled in to the delight of attendees. All veterans who served our country were honored. This year’s Memorial Day theme paid special tribute to Pearl Harbor survivors. Recognition and honor was given to retired 96 year old WW II Army veteran Col. Samuel Clower representing all Pearl Harbor survivors. President Franklin D. Roosevelt (AKA actor Joe Hart) eloquently reenacted the “Day of Infamy” speech given to Congress in 1941. The Fair Oaks Memorial Day Ceremony participants and the audience thanked and honored the ultimate sacrifice given by our fallen heroes. A wreath was placed by American Legion Post 383 Commander Mark Rice (American Legion Rider) and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 6158 Commander Alex Briones to honor the fallen veterans buried in the historic Fair Oaks Cemetery. Let us preserve the freedom and love of country our veterans have so valiantly fought for and not take for granted our soldiers who still give of themselves for the freedom we enjoy today. The American Legion Riders, who are a group of veterans across the nation that love motorcycle riding, give thanks and recognition to all our veterans reminding us freedom is not free. I

Our Iron Butt Challenge

heard about the “Iron Butt” award last year when a couple of friends of mine saw and commented on a Facebook post. My husband, Robert, and two sons, Justin and Ryan, and I rode our bikes to Sturgis, SD for the 75th Rally anniversary last summer. We had taken advantage of the time away and visited almost all of the monuments and parks in the area, including an 890 mile trek in 17 hours from Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon. One of my friends commented that we almost qualified for the Iron Butt Award. That piqued my interest. What is this Iron Butt Award? Was this a mythical bragging right? I researched the subject online and discovered that there actually IS an Iron Butt Association (www.ironbutt. com) (IBA –World’s Toughest Riders) and that they actually DO give recognition for motorcycle endurance challenges. One of their “entry level” challenges is the “Saddle Sore 1000” challenge. You can choose your own challenge route but be very vigilant about your documentation. You need an eye witness to sign some forms before you depart and at the end of your ride. You need to collect all gas receipts and log locations, mileage and make sure there are date/time stamps on the receipts, take photographs of your odometers at the start and end of the ride and submit everything to the IBA with copies of your receipts, maps and route with towns of gas stops circled and notated, and the eye witness forms, oh, and the ride needs to be completed in under 24 hours! I exuberantly exclaimed to my husband “We can do this!” to which, he rolled his eyes and obediently said “yes dear”. I called my two sons to invite them along. My youngest son, Ryan, eagerly accepted the challenge, but my oldest blatantly blurted out “No way…. I’m WAY to wimpy!” So we set up our route. Of course we COULD have made our challenge a little easier on ourselves and chosen a nice, direct route, but no! We decided to take Highway 1/101 all the way up the Pacific Coast from Newcastle, CA to Mendocino, to Arberdeen, WA and then inland to Renton WA, near Seattle. “Google Maps” estimated our route, nonstop, to take 22 hours. Of course that was minus gas stops, traffic, mishaps and any possible road construction. Robert calculated 6 gas stops, at a bare bones 10 minutes each, adding another hour to our trek. We wouldn’t need any food or drinks or potty breaks! We can DO this! So I took my 2015 tax return and serviced the bikes – oil changes, new tires, the works. We were ready for this! Then, one week before our trip, I felt a stabbing, shooting,

agonizing pain under my right shoulder blade and extending down my arm – warranting a trip to the ER. I lost feeling in my right hand and the doctors loaded me up with gabapentin, Naproxen, Norco, and cyclobanzapine – most of which state “do not drive while under the influence of…”. These medications minimally dulled the pain, but it was not going to stop me! We spent the day before our departure day cleaning and packing the bikes, last minute oil and tire pressure checks, lovingly made up baggies of snacks and froze thermoses for last minute power aid fill ups in the morning. Ryan, my youngest son, worked all week in Oahu, then, made the 5 hour flight from Hawaii to San Francisco. He arrived quite tired and jet lagged. That night, Robert came down with a severe bout of indigestion with extreme stomach pain. He only got two hours of sleep that night and was dealing with debilitating nausea. Yep! We were ready to go, alright! Walt and Pam Upmann, our CMA president and his wife, were kind enough to be our departing eye witnesses. They showed up bleary eyed at 3:45 AM, filled our forms, took odometer readings and acted as our send off committee. We bid goodbye to our slumbering equines and headed up our driveway to the first fuel stop and official start of the journey, the Flyers in Newcastle. When we got there, my son handed me my now battered and scraped “biker chick” metal thermos, which had already somehow fallen off of my bike – OK, first incident down. The first several hours went by without further incident. As the sun was rising over the horizon, we were headed North on the 505. I had my cruise control set, music turned up, feet on the highway pegs and was generally in my “happy place”. I was “in the zone” as I passed Robert and took the position as leader of the pack. I do NOT navigate! That is Robert’s job. I don’t care how we get there or what route we need to take, just as long as we get there. Robert had everything plugged into his GPS and he conferred with Ryan, who was following along via his phone navigational system. It was about that time, that I looked in my rear view mirrors to see both of them, well behind me, veer off on the Highway 128 West exit. Darn! It was too late for me to exit! I had the throttle pegged until I could find another exit with an overpass 2miles up the road and turn back. There went my “happy place”. I fervently hoped that they were waiting for me. They were, but they were shaking their heads, doubtful that we were

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 32

going to make our time goal at this rate. I promised to be the dutiful wife from now on and just follow along. The miles rolled by and the hours ticked off, until we finally reached our second fuel stop in Cloverdale. Man, it felt like we had been on the road for a very long time, and we weren’t even at the coast yet. It was still quite cold and we were well bundled up, or stomachs were growling (except Roberts). We couldn’t eat or drink because of the thick gloves and face warmers we were wearing. Oh, breakfast would be so good! We had the lovingly packed snacks in the tank bags – oh so close, and yet, so far away, at least for Ryan and I. Robert had no interest in eating due to his stomach pain. Oh well, I reasoned in my head, I guess the lack of food and drink will eliminate the need for potty stops. We were now fueled up, miles logged, receipts gained, and a handful of trail mix swallowed hastily down and we were on the road again. Finally we hit coastal Highway 1. Ryan, on his sport bike, gleefully accepted the challenge of the hairpin turns. Robert, fueled by testosterone, was going to keep up with the whippersnapper and was bent on grinding off his footboards in doing so. I was the least experienced rider of this group and I was NOT going to grind off my foot boards. It was somewhere along Highway 1 that I hit a sleeper curve too hot. I kept the bike leaned over, but went into a two wheeled drift right off the pavement. As soon as the tires hit the dirt, they dug in, flipping the bike 180 degrees on its axis and spinning it around in the opposite direction. I was thrown from the bike, and it was by the grace of God that I was uninjured (except for my pride and my psyche) and my bike was relatively undamaged. It was also by the grace of God that this was a curve that was not flanked by a sheer cliff with a drop off to the ocean and the rocks below. We got my bike up and continued on our journey. I kept up with the guys quite well after that, or, they decided to ease up off of the throttle a little, but I prefer to believe that it is the former.

and the redwoods were our constant travel companions. We became quite competent at passing slower traffic on the two lane roads. The infrequent and brief gas stops were a welcomed respite. Through it all, though, the dampness and cold seeped into our bones. It seemed to get colder and damper as we crossed over into Oregon. Suddenly we were plagued by frequent and prolonged construction delays. The minutes ticked by and our nerves became frazzled. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, we broke free from the construction. Luckily, there was no shortage of passing lanes. Despite the bone chilling cold and damp and the eminent setting of the sun, we finally hit our last Oregon gas stop in Garibaldi. Miles 700 to 900 were the most difficult. I had not had any pain pills in a really long time and I was experiencing stabbing, shooting pain down my arm. But the pain seemed to be keeping me lucid. Ryan was punching himself in the leg to try to keep awake and was hallucinating about seeing elk on the road. Poor Robert was feeling every bump in the road and would occasionally pull over to vomit or dry heave in the brush. It seemed to be slow and agonizing going. At long last, we hit Arberdeen, Washington. Only 100 miles to go! All of a sudden, we had renewed energy. We were going to make our distance goal AND we were going to make our time goal! We were almost ecstatic when we saw the welcoming yellow “Days Inn” sign in Renton, Washington 1018 miles away. It was 2 AM and we had beaten our goal time by 2 hours! With copious amounts of pain killers on board, we laid our road weary bodies on the beds. With vibrating bodies and ringing ears, we fell asleep thinking about the last 22 hours. What a trip, and for what? I can’t wait to get my pin in the mail! Just yesterday, I mentioned to Robert,” Let’s try for the IBA 1500 mile Bun Burner Challenge”! His obligatory “yes dear” answer was a little reluctant in coming.

while back, Forrest came by the house and asked me ‘remember I was talking to you about improving the suspension on my Dyna?’ I said “yeah”. ‘Well, I just got some new rear shocks and they’re great!’ He told me they are made by a company out of Illinois called Super Shox. He said that they were a big improvement over what he had been running and after throwing out plenty of superlatives, I said “wow! do they have Super Shox for baggers?” ‘Yep! They do’.

Bagger On Stand

We have a 2014 Ultra and Cindy and I spend a lot of time out on the road. Our biggest complaint with the suspension was that we couldn’t get the air shocks adjusted quite right. Reduce the pressure for a softer ride and they would bottom out or increase the pressure and you feel just about every bump. So, I contacted Super Shox. After receiving the shocks in the mail, Forrest and I installed them. Replacing the old shocks was pretty simple. Jack up the bike a little to remove the tension, remove the bolts and it’s off with the old and on with the new. Don’t forget the spacers, though. Complete instructions are included along with an adjustment chart. After everything was snugged up, I adjusted the Super Shox to a setting of just over 7. That was the initial recommendation for our two up weight and luggage.

Now it was time for a test ride. How about a quick trip to Minnesota and back? What do you think? Four thousand miles or so should give us a good idea of how the shocks perform. In a word, awesome! The first thing we noticed was that there is a definite cushion to the ride and none of that, sometimes hard, bounce you off your seat tendency that the air shocks had. After the initial setting of around 7, I made a few fine tuning adjustments during the trip. We ended up with a setting just under 6.5. No matter what the road conditions were (and we came across it all!) it was the smoothest, tightest and most

comfortable ride we’ve had. It’s a just plain softer ride, where you feel like you can relax in the seat and not have to worry about the next jolt. By the way, this is no ‘Johnny- come – lately’ or a fly-by-night company. They have been building shocks for championship sprint and midget cars for almost 20 years with a fine racing heritage behind every set of Super Shox (www.Supershox.com) Bottom line, an excellent pair of shocks. Day Ride: Charlie Chaplin Days in Niles

I

t was a beautiful June day to ride with no destination in mind. My good friend, Willie dropped by at around 9:30 in the morning right when I was warming up the bike. About that time Nad comes out and says “we riding or what?” We got on the bikes and just went where the front wheel took us. We turned onto Walnut in Fremont and went the back way over the hill to 680. We really didn’t want to jump on the freeway so we found another back road, Sheridan Rd. We followed that for awhile and it took us to Andrade Rd were we turn left followed that back to 680. There’s a gas station there that sells really high octane gas called Sunol Super Stop from there we said screw it lets jump on 680 then 84 east and head to Mines Rd. A funny thing happens on our way to Mines Rd, while cruzing down these back roads, I noticed road kill squirrels and a couple dead snakes on the road. Now I’m getting hungry, picturing the squirrels and snake on the Bar-B-Que is almost more than a man could handle. Then it happened! While going down Wente Rd in Livermore I smelled someone Bar-B-queing. I made a U turn, Willie kept going straight. When Willy turned around and caught up with me he said “Whatdafuk, dude?” I looked at him and said Steak! The Florence! Now we were on a mission and making a bee line to the Florence in Niles!

When we arrived in Niles there were all kinds of people in town- we rode into their annual Charlie Chaplin Days. Unfortunately, we were too early for the Sunday Bar-B-que at The Florence, so we decided to mingle around in the crowd. I caught a Charlie Chaplin look-alike with no drawers on, I told him it’s going in the mag and he couldn’t help but laugh out loud – but it was the only time he made a sound. It was really cool, old antique cars, a lot of people dressed for the era. At the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum (www.nilesfilmmuseum.org) they were showing the silent films. There were flags out and everyone was into the spirit of the event. When we got back to The Florence the steaks were a cookin! My good friend Big Ron was there waiting for the dinner right along with me. Across the street from The Florence is the Devils Workshop with a badass 57 Chevy parked in front. You need to check this place out when you’re in Niles. This place is old school to the bone. It’s been there for as long as I can remember and hasn’t change much and I’m almost as old as dirt. Dinner is on!!!! The steak was killer!! I ate mine and half of Nads. My friend got up to get a drink at the bar so I thought he was done and his steak came up missing too. I owe you one Bro, next Bar-B-Que on me. Article and photos contributed by Dan and Nad.

Lane Splitter HD: This WAS their First Rodeo

June 11 (San Jose): I was at the newly renamed Lane Splitter Harley-Davidson for the Biker Rodeo and the promised mechanical Bull. It was a warm sunny day. A row of wispy clouds looked like a row of iron horses ready to break through the gates. Bikes were packed in and the cages were adding up. Engines were revving, boards were scraping and an excited voice bragged of building Sportsters for forty-five years. The DJ cranked “You Look Like I Need a Drink” by Justin Moore to the arriving Cowboys. Inside the dealership, Lynyrd Skynyrd brought a little rock to this rodeo party. The iron horses bowed to the mechanical bull center stage. Cute girls, in Daisy Dukes, plaid shirts, cowboy hats and boots were perfect examples of why some people say, “Life is better in boots.” Some of the attendees may have recognized a few of the ladies in the Daisy Dukes from Vegas night. After visiting with some of the girls, I made my way over to the homemade food. It was cooked early Saturday morning and it made my stomach growl. Luckily there was plenty of hot brisket and cold beer. While I ate I got to enjoy the bull riding and catch up with friends. Shawn White, from San Jose, brought his brood out just to see the mechanical bull.

Angela Beemer and Izzy White gave it their best go round as Shawn and the crowd cheered them on. After getting bucked around, Izzy claimed she was ready to take on a real bull. Three of the cute girls in boots and hats, Tawnie, Amanda and Kristia were among the daredevils to give the bull a go. The mechanical bull riding competition was a crowd pleaser. Working for Chino Llamas Bulls, the bull operator was Guillermo Rameireź, of Santa Clara. Guillermo brought

on the hurt for the three finalists. The local urban cowboys of San Jose, Anthony Urban and Philip Urban could not hold on long enough. They fell to second and third respectfully. While Kyle Smith, of Santa Clara, dripping with sweat and blood (from a face wound) came out victorious. The fun continued outside too, where I met several people. Mark Coffman, of Hollister, stopped by on his way to the Livermore rodeo. “I thought I’d pregame at the Biker Rodeo.” Which made sense to me. He was enjoying the day on his Heritage Softail Classic which sports 60,000 miles. Gina Nasti, who has been riding since she was 15, pointed out that “Bikers are the greatest people.” She came out to “Get her motor running.” As the riding competitions heated up we all got our motors running. A big wheel custom bike pulled in just in time for me to meet Steve Ortega. A true Okie from Muskogee, currently from San Jose, he brought his sweet

ride in to buy a toggle switch and found a party. The Latin American Association had a big showing. They have been around since 1977 with 100 chapters currently. Two of their members purchased motorcycles from Lane Splitter HD in April. President of the San Jose chapter, Angel, and his wife were there. They showed off their skills going through the cones. To top off the day, Belon won $50 for the weenie bite contest. But for everyone present at that competition, there were no losers! Phones were out, laughter ensued. I would not be surprised to find more than one YouTube sensation created from this biker rodeo! I am just glad they didn’t use mayo! Article contributed by Kristy Smith. My goal was to ride the mountain passes and summits from South Lake Tahoe to Yosemite which included Echo Summit (Highway 50), Luther Pass (SR89), Carson Pass (SR88), Monitor Pass (SR89), Ebbett’s Pass (SR4), Pacific Grade Summit (SR4), Sonora Pass (SR108), and Tioga Pass (SR120). I figured there might be some good fall photo ops on the June Lake Loop and I was not disappointed. I knew I had a lot of ground to cover, so there wouldn’t be time for any long food stops. I threw some water, protein bars and trail mix into the side bag, said good-bye to the wife, and headed out before dawn. After passing through Placerville, the Eastern sky began to lighten and I was cruising along pretty much by my lonesome. All my life I’ve found it hard to get up early, but this morning ride was exhilarating! The brisk air was clean and fresh, the smell of pine mixed occasionally with the scent of burning wood coming from a nearby fireplace. Winter was not far off. Before long, I reached Echo Summit (80 miles) and began the descent down to Meyers when I took notice of the temperature 37 degrees, a titty bit nipply. I headed south on SR89 and came to Luther Pass (92 miles). The scenery was starting to take on the look of fall as the trees displayed their red and golden hues. My next stop was Carson Pass (103 miles), so I took SR88 west and climbed past Red Lake and up to the top. After a quick photo, I headed back down to 89 and I continued on toward Monitor Pass taking some great shots along the way. The view at Monitor Pass (137 miles), impressive as usual. As I put the pass in my rear view mirror and cruised down to Hwy 395, I made a right and headed to Bridgeport (187 miles) where along the way, I found even more impressive Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 50

scenery. I gassed up and had some “lunch” there before going on to SR120. At 120, I turned west and made the climb to Tioga Pass (224 miles), a beautiful ride that passes Ellery Lake and cuts through the mountain rock formations. Once there, I reversed course and headed back down. Now it was on to the June Lake Loop (254 miles). I enjoyed the view of Mono Lake while approaching Hwy 395. The Loop is about 15 miles long and it passes by four lakes; Grant Lake, Silver Lake (my favorite), Gull Lake and June Lake. Mountains also border the Loop, so the road actually runs through a kind of valley. Again, there was a lot of fall foliage. From Luther Pass onward, I wasn’t the only one enjoying the scenery - there were photographers scattered all along my route. After yakking with some of them I found that most were amateurs with some seasoned professionals mixed in. They all seemed to have exotic equipment, though. With my Sony pocket camera and IPhone I felt like the proverbial guy that brings a knife to a gunfight. After finishing the loop, I rode North on 395 back to Bridgeport (293 miles). I did pull over at the graffiti guardrail and gave the Mono Basin one last look. In Bridgeport I gassed up, munched on some trail mix, got back in the saddle and headed to SR 108. I turned on to 108 and rode through the lower valley and before too long started the climb to Sonora Pass (324 miles). There are a lot of tight twists to navigate as you go up. Back on 395 North, I pulled off to check out a Firefighter Memorial outside of Coleville. It was dedicated to three firefighters who died when their C130 crashed while helping to extinguish a forest fire in 2002. There is a plaque and on a property fence behind it, Fire Departments from all over have draped T-shirts designating their respective branches. It’s not fancy but there is a kind

of local “working class hero” reality to it. I wanted to fuel up before hitting SR4 and the final two passes, so I passed the turnoff and continued up to the Topaz Lake Casino (367 miles). After filling up, I went in and dropped a quick $20 on the slots. Since the sun was getting ominously low in the west, I couldn’t do much more than that or I’d have to cover Ebbett’s Pass in the dark. Of all the passes, this was my favorite. SR4 to the Pacific Grade Summit seems so tucked in and tight-just a different kind of ride. After reaching Ebbett’s Pass (402 miles) and yet another photo op I continued on to the Pacific Grade Summit (409 miles). There at the summit you will find Mosquito Lake. If you haven’t been before, the next time you travel this way, take a butt break at the sign or at the pullout a little way up. I had one of those surreal, almost mystic experiences. No, I did not drop the $20 on a hit of Peyote. It’s just that the place was so still and quiet, so visually 3D. Yet it was like I stepped into a picture from some storybook scene. I just can’t explain it-guess you just had to be there. So I soldiered on and made it to Murphy’s by dark and made my last stop in Angel’s Camp (464 miles) for gas and my first decent meal of the day. Feeling pretty good, it was back on Hwy 49 and home (534 miles). My adventure had taken 15 hours and covered 575 miles (I did a little exploring up some side roads), but was worth every minute. You could make it an overnighter for an un-hurried ride, but I was feeling a little iron-buttish at the time. Article and photos contributed by Chuck & Cindy Loseth

NEWLY REMODELED: THE JUNCTION BAR AND GRILL

A

few months ago, we rode out to the very famous “Junction Bar and Restaurant” in Livermore to see for ourselves if the rumors were true. As we were riding up, there were bewildered riders facing the dreaded closed signs. Wow! An irreplaceable loss. That’s why when new owners Brian and Jonalyn along with father-in-law Jerry came in and remodeled the place (Brian once made a living revamping restaurants) we headed out to eat – pronto! Riding up to the doors once again was awesome. We wanted them to know. Whether it’s a cold beer or a full out meal “The Junction Bar and Grill” delivers. We walked into a party on Saturday where we found a large group of 50 riders in the middle of chowing down. It only took 1 phone call to Brian to arrange to feed them faster than otherwise ordering one by one from the menu. Not required to

call, but what service! Dan ordered the “Junctionator”. That meal definitely blew him away. Whenever you see Dan rubbing his belly and smiling at the same time you know he hit pay dirt! Brian and family dreamed of living out in the mountains on Mines Rd since his first visit 10 years before. When the opportunity arose to live out here the family jumped in and never regretted it. Jerry helped make that dream come true. Riding up from Livermore on Mines Road is an amazing adventure in time. That’s what makes “The Junction” such a great stop. Completely different, this stop in the east is like the Alice’s Restaurant on the west side. A must do for bikers from all over. The Junction would also be a great location to end a poker run. Plenty of food and space for a band and games and shady picnic tables. It’s right at about the half way mark on

the way in and out of your ride. It’s like riding in the mountains with hardly anything around except cows, horses, tule elk, wild turkeys, and road runners among others. I’ve even seen a rattlesnake crossing the road once. That’s why Dan always checks his overalls if we stop for pictures or a smoke. Everyone rides at their own pace around the curves and hills. Once in awhile you will pass a brave cyclist. It’s a really beautiful road with a lot of little twisties and you will lose yourself in the peacefulness and beauty of the panoramics – but pay

attention for the occasional oncoming car or motorcycle. While you’re there don’t forget to take a picture of your ole lady kissing the boar head for good luck, and send the pic to Thunder Roads. Article and photos contributed by Dan and Nad

REBEL ON THE HIGHWAY

ebel On The Highway is a soon to be released biker movie that is being produced by none Producer Charlie Brechtel and other than Executive Producer Dennis Sanfilippo Bikers Inner Circle Internet Radio’s (www.BICProductions.com) - Charlie Brechtel along with Executive Producer Dennis Sanfillipo. You might know of “Good Time” Charlie from the Charlie Brechtel Band that you can always see at the Buffalo Chip every year tearing up the stage with his own sound and songs for and about bikers and the motorcycle lifestyle. Charlie and his band are booked at biker events all over the country and as far away as Russia. Charlie has a great appreciation for the history of the motorcycling lifestyle and is always looking to help raise money for the Sturgis Museum (www.SturgisMuseum.com) where a lot of that history can be found. It is with his sense of history and respect for the long standing biker traditions that Charlie along with an extensive cast of characters began making this movie. This film is unique in that you won’t find any Hollywood professional actors or film crew involved as the crew is entirely made up of bikers. The movie production has been catching attention all across the country with scenes being filmed in several different states along with the support from local clubs that are cast as movie extras in numerous scenes. You can follow along the way to find out about upcoming film locations and watch movie outtakes on its Facebook page at Rebel-On-The-Highway-The- Movie.

the devil – Charlie is offered all the success that he dreams of (but when you deal with the devil there is always a price to pay). You can’t help but to cheer Charlie along as he fights to get his life back on the right track once he recognizes that all his sudden success was due to the devil. When the devil comes to get him to sign the contract for his soul, Charlie refuses and takes off to get his life back on track again. The message behind this story has the makings for a great movie for the entire family as the lessons of choosing the right path in life and to avoid the pitfalls regardless of how enticing the wrong direction may look. Now for the rest of the story you will just have to go watch the movie when it premieres! And since this movie has been filmed all across the country - you just might see a familiar face or two. So stay tuned - there will be a series of viewings across the country at local theaters! Rebel On The Highway will premiere in July 2017 which also happens to be the same month as the movie Easy Rider came out in 1969. The timing is out of respect for and a tribute to this iconic motorcycle movie.

22ND ANNUAL HOT RODS & HARLEYS June 5 (Vacaville): ABATE Local 17 teamed up with Iron Steed Harley-Davidson in Vacaville who opened their big parking lot up for some of the coolest hot rods and bikes around for a combination car and bike show. Overall, the competition was fun but fierce and some really nice trophies were up for grabs. Among, the bikes and cars there were several vendors onsite along with a beer garden that was quite busy as the heat of the day peaked. The Terry Sheets Band was on the corner stage entertaining the crowd with his upbeat country music and stage presence. It was hopping inside the dealership with customers who were trying to escape into the air conditioning for a minute and to see some of the latest products that the Drag Specialties booth offered. Put this on your calendar as this is a family friendly event to raise money for ABATE. ABATE 17 always seem to come up with a wide variety of raffle prizes that are generously donated. It seemed as if they were calling raffle numbers all day long with one of the big draws was a 50 TV. The winner was so excited that I could not get her name (sorry!) but congratulations anyway! It was a fun day hanging out with everyone that came out for the day. We are already looking forward to the 23rd Annual Hot Rods and Harleys next year! Article by Stan and Terry Hill. Sons of Hell North

May14 (Redding): I rode with the Family Humboldt crew to Redding for the Sons of Hell North’s 2nd anniversary party. Saturday - party day turned out to be a cloudy and warm spring day even though rain had been predicted. We arrived at the clubhouse around noon as they were erecting the ramp for the upcoming freestyle MX jump show. Forrest, Thunder Roads photographer was there and he introduced me to a couple of the Sons of Hell members. One of the old timers showed me around their clubhouse which was in an industrial park on the outskirts of Redding. There was a big parking lot there and the Fryed Brothers Band was unloading their bus. They were to be the headliners for Saturday night’s entertainment. After it was unloaded, Harry Fryed did a super job parking their big bus.

The energy was already good and kept flowing as more and more high powered motorcycles kept rolling in and the parking lot was filling up. As the time neared to begin the poker run, Forrest chose to stay and take photos in order to be there for the first of Nick Dunne’s jumps. I chose to go on the poker run. First, we drew two cards at the clubhouse. Then, the pack of over 40 poker run riders took off and flew down the road. If you have ever ridden in a pack of 40 to 50 motorcycles roaring down a back country road, then you know it’s not for the faint of heart. With only four or five feet separating your front wheel from someone’s rear wheel, you learn that you have to put a lot of trust in the rider ahead of you and rely heavily on your own reflexes. At the first stop on the poker run, which was the Redrock Bar in Palo Cedro, I drew my second ten. I also took a

photo of Patty holding up her famous gold panties. Then the bikes all took off for the Whitmore Music Festival. There was great country music from the Hill Street Band while I was there. A very nice custom car show was just getting finished. While there, I drew my third ten card and I was feeling pretty good about my chances to win. I took more photos and jumped back on my Triumph Tiger and headed back to the Sons of Hell clubhouse. On my return to the clubhouse, I found the freestyle jumping and burnout contests were in full swing and the crowd had really grown. We arrived just in time to see the first in a series of heart stopping stunts by Nick Dunne. Nick has been riding for 24 years and has been doing Freestyle MX jumping for 10 years. He is a local Redding man, and he certainly put on quite a show demonstrating his outstanding talents four separate times throughout the day. There was also a young rider who put on the best burnout show I have ever seen. He did burnouts through 2nd and 3rd gears. He did a tremendous burnout right in front of us and left about a pound of rubber in the parking lot. He continued until he eventually blew his tire, to the crowds loud approval. The Sons of Hell contributed a new tire for his amazing efforts.

Afterwards, the clubhouse was full and The End Time Lions and Black Mask Theory bands were keeping the music pumping. About 9pm, the Fryed Brothers Band took the stage and played well into the night. Harry Fryed talked about playing with the late Merle Haggard who also lived outside Redding. The band’s rendition of Merle’s song “Sing Me Back Home” was incredible. Amazingly, they

seemed to get even better as the night progressed. The camaraderie was great and there were many different club patches to be seen. Bikers of all ages were in attendance. There was a lot of “old guys” mixed with the high energy of the “young guns” at all the activities. The Harley Dynas and FXR’s seemed to be the motorcycles of choice, especially with the young men. I noticed a sticker on one of the Dyna’s that read “Dyna Kartel”. It certainly seemed appropriate for that day. The beautiful fire dancer, Elizabeth Sealey finished the night with a flaming performance . Oh yes, my three 10s were finally beaten by 4 Kings in the poker run, but I’ll be back next year to try my luck again! Yes, the Sons of Hell North certainly put on a truly great biker party and much fun was had by all!! Article contributed by “Bobby G” Godwin. Photo contributed by Forrest Coss

“Squiggy” and his wife, Joletta, are having hard financial times, so they decide she’ll become a hooker. She’s not quite sure what to do, so “Squig” says, “Stand in front of that bar and pick up a guy. Tell him a hundred bucks. If you’ve got a question, I’ll be parked around the corner.” She’s not there five minutes when a guy pulls up and says, “How much? Joletta says, “A hundred dollars.” Guy says “Dang, All I’ve got is thirty.” She says, ”Hold on.” She runs back to Squiggy and says, “What can he get for thirty dollars?” Squig ponders and says, “A hand job”. She runs back and tells the guy all he gets for thirty dollars is a hand job. He says okay, so she gets in the car, he unzips his pants, and out pops an astonishing HUGE pecker. Joletta stares at it for a minute, and then says, “I’ll be right back.” She runs back around the corner and says breathlessly, “Squig,, you reckon you can lend this guy seventy bucks?”. ____________________________________________________ A little boy and a little girl attended the same school and became friends. Every day they would sit together to eat their lunch. They discovered that they both brought chicken sandwiches every day! This went on all through the fourth and fifth grades, until one day he noticed that her sandwich wasn’t a chicken sandwich. He said, “Hey, how come you’re not eating chicken, don’t you like it anymore?” She said “I love it but I have to stop eating it.” “Why?” he asked. She pointed to her lap and said “Cause I’m starting to grow little feathers down there!”. “Let me see” he said. “Okay”, and she pulled up her skirt. He looked and said, “That’s right. You are! Better not eat any more chicken.”He kept eating his chicken sandwiches until one day he brought peanut butter. He said to the little girl, “I have to stop eating chicken sandwiches, I’m starting to get feathers down there too!” She asked if she could look, so he pulled down his pants for her. She raised her eyebrow at him and said “Oh my, it’s way too late for you! You’ve already got the neck and the gizzards.” ____________________________________________________ The football coach noticed that his star tackle, “Boner”, had so many women hanging around that he couldn’t possibly handle all of them. So one day he asked Boner “Just what the hell is your secret, kid?”

Boner replies, “Well, Coach, whenever I’m about to have sex, I always whip it out and bang it on the dresser like a hammer. That numbs it up, and I can screw ‘em till they beg me to stop!” The coach went home early one day and went to the bedroom. He heard his wife in the shower. Seeing a window of opportunity, he tore off his clothes and started bangin’ the hell out of his “wanker” on the dresser. His wife stuck her head out of the shower and yells out, “That you Boner,, baby?” Come on in sugar.......the water just feels divine. ____________________________________________________ This morning on Hwy. 12, I looked over to my left and there was a woman in a brand new Cadillac doing 65 mph with her face up next to her rear view mirror, putting on her eyeliner. I looked away for a couple seconds...to continue shaving; and when I looked back she was halfway over in my lane, still working on that makeup. As a man, I don’t scare easily, but she scared me so much; I dropped my electric shaver, which knocked the donut out of my other hand. In all the confusion of trying to straighten out the car using my knees against the steering wheel, it knocked my cell phone away from my ear, which fell into the coffee between my legs! splashed and burned “Big Jim and the Twins”, ruined the damn phone, soaked my trousers, and disconnected an important call. Damn women drivers! ____________________________________________________ Ma was in the kitchen fiddlin’ around when she hollers out....”Pa! You need to go out and fix the outhouse!” Pa replies, “There ain’t nuthin wrong with the outhouse.” Ma yells back, “Yes there is, now git out there and fix it.” So......Pa mosies out to the outhouse, looks around and yells back, “Ma! There ain’t nuthin wrong with the outhouse! “ Ma replies, “Stick yur head in the hole!” Pa yells back, “I ain’t stickin’ my head in that hole!” Ma says, “Ya have to stick yur head in the hole to see what to fix.” So with that, Pa sticks his head in the hole, looks around and yells back, “Ma! There ain’t nuthin wrong with this outhouse!” Ma hollers back, “Now take your head out of the hole!” Pa proceeds to pull his head out of the hole, then starts yelling, “Ma! Help! My beard is stuck in the cracks in the toilet seat!” To which Ma replies, “Hurt’s, don’t it?”

hat are you walking towards? I raise the question, as lately I have been on a quest to get healthy. Physically healthy to be specific. Mental health, emotional health as well as financial health are all things that most of us take for granted. And I know most of us take our physical health for granted as well. I am positive the majority of us don’t take into account our spiritual health. I am no different, as I love a good burger, fries and a coke every chance I get. I can pound down an extra-large creamy banana milk shake with the best of ‘em too. And blend that with a Reese’s peanut butter cup, and it’s all over with the clicking of the spoon on the ice cold metal cup they serve it in. Heck, who can pass by “The Purple Place” on Green Valley Road outside of Folsom, CA without stopping for their favorite mouthwatering cheese burger, order of fries and a nice large coca cola on ice? It seems like my bike has an auto-pilot coming from the winding path on Salmon Falls Road to pull in for some good old fashioned grub. Throughout the years, and after shoulder surgery, I became less active with more sitting than walking and more lounging than basic activities. Without noticing, the pounds gathered around my waistline and I’d become just kind of sluggish. The bad part was as I became more sedentary, my eating habits never changed, and voila, I was 25 pounds overweight. Needless to say, January this year, I made some much needed changes in my intake of food and my activity. It was nothing really major, as I just had to make a commitment “to myself” to change. It can be the same for our spiritual life in making a small commitment to change our perspective and or reach out. I committed to a healthy lifestyle by making some changes in my food intake and one day I just got up and walked. I knew I would never run and my schedule wouldn’t allow me to get to the gym, so I was coached to “Just Walk”. Thinking that was the least strenuous thing I could do, I did just that, I walked. At first it was 1 mile, then 2 miles, and as of today, I look forward to walking 5 miles most every

Saturday and Sunday morning even before I ride. It is the same with our spiritual health. We go to church one day a week or we read scripture one morning every week. Whatever it is, we just do it and then soon, it becomes a habit in improving all aspects of our health. I have lost close to 25 lbs. and about 36 total inches. I have stopped snoring and I have more energy. I just feel good. My wife is happy and my kids are extremely excited since I will be around many more years to come. I write these things not to gloat or praise myself, I write these things to be an inspiration to those who are struggling with change or giving their heart to something new. The good book says that there are better days ahead where there will be no more pain, no more suffering, no more addictions, and no more physical illness. Until that time, we at Thunder Road Church offer understanding and acceptance of the scriptures and present it in a way you will understand. You will come to a point in your life that it will become like spiritual food that you will long to hear. It will become satisfying and the “Best Food” that you have ever consumed. You will begin to crave it as you craved that good ol’ Purple Place burger. I walk weekly to improve my physical health, but more importantly, I attend Thunder Road Church weekly to improve my spiritual health. I do this as I know I will be able to withstand the heavy loads this world places upon me. We hope to see you soon at this spiritual gym we call Thunder Road Biker Church. May The Lord Keep You In Good Health. Revelations 21:4 - “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” “Never Ride Alone” Pastor Johnny Lujan

t was 105 degrees outside. Inside my shop it was even hotter. I’ve been setting up my new shop, working on crashed bikes and repairing bent frames in this hella hot relentless heat wave and sweating like I’m in a sauna. There’s no escape from the heat, unless I stop working and go in my air conditioned office. But I can’t stop working on these bikes just because it’s hot, I’ve got a shop to run and bikes to repair! Not to mention, shops and customers don’t give a shit how hot it is. They want their bikes back. The end of the day rolls around and I lock up the shop and get on the bike for the ride home. It’s hot as hell, and now the temperature is 107 and all I want to do is go home take a shower and have an ice cold beer or two. I wish I could tell you it cools off at 80 mph but that’s not the case. In fact, 80 mph didn’t last long either and the traffic on the freeway slows to about 25 mph so I do what any old school, self respecting biker does when it’s 107 degrees. I split lanes! As I’m enjoying my California given right to split lanes, some asshole in a big diesel pickup with a lift kit and big wheels moves over to the white lines and blocks me from splitting lanes. I know he saw me because I saw him laughing. Then he revved his engine and this big black puff of smoke almost got me, and the son of a bitch was laughing hysterically! The car next to me moved over to get away from the smoke and I blasted the throttle to avoid the diesel smoke. As I passed the truck, I gave him the one finger salute. His truck was too high for me to adjust his mirror.

I wanted to put some vent holes in his tires but he was moving too fast and I’m not into that road warrior shit. I just want to make it home and get out of the heat. I take my exit off the freeway and the traffic sucks, so I split lanes again. After a couple of stop lights, a woman driving a silver Prius blocks me from splitting lanes. I rap the engine a couple of times to get her attention, but she ain’t moving and I can see her looking at me in her mirror! Who DOES that? The car to her left moves way over and I give him deuces up as I go on my way. I gave the Prius a pass and let her keep her mirror. I just want to make it home and get out of the heat. It’s 107 degrees outside and it feels like 120 degrees riding in between cars, and these assholes are trying to get me to sit in this hellatious heat, all the while, they’re sitting in air conditioned cars. I just want to make it home and get out of this heat and have a cold beer. Don’t people realize it’s legal to split lanes in this state? Is there anyone out there who could make this part of the DMV driver’s license test? I know I’m preaching to the choir cause I know none of those dumb ass cagers would be reading this magazine. But how long can this go on!? Where drivers are ignorant of the law and taking the law into their own hands with minimal consequence for the driver? Meanwhile, innocent bikers are paying the ultimate price, and sometimes it’s with life and/or a limb! It’s not right and something has to be done! That’s my two cents. Al Cagle www.rackandpull.com
