ICWI PINK RUN exceeds JM$5M target by 200%

The months leading up to the Pink Run were all abuzz with planning efforts to bring back the ICWI Pink Run in a big way, and the planning committee comprised of Patrick Williams, Samantha Samuda, Valerie Reynolds, Margaret Clarke-Peryer, and members of the Jamaica Reach to Recovery team did not disappoint.

The annual Pink Run was back after a two year hiatus due to the Pandemic. The initiative is one of the major calendar events of Jamaica Reach to Recovery (Jr2R), the breast cancer support arm of the Jamaica Cancer Society.

“Serving you is all we do.” 3

For the month of October, the world ushered in breast cancer awareness month. Jamaicans were called to be mindful of the alarming reality that one in every 20 women in Jamaica is expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer at least once in their lifetime. Even though breast cancer is largely a curable disease, thanks to increased early detection and treatment, the quality of life of breast cancer patients has become an important area of focus. Survivors need a personalized, tailored approach and follow-up care to ensure their recovery, this can be a significant stretch on the financial resources of the survivor. Additional support services are needed to cushion the demands that are left on survivors and their families.

Through the work of the Jamaica Reach to Recovery (JR2R), numerous women now have the support they need to survive a breast cancer diagnosis. For the past 19 years, the JR2R has relied on the annual five-kilometre Pink Run charity event to finance its work and ensure that the women who are already fighting breast cancer can have the lifesaving tests and treatments for their members.

The Insurance Company of the West Indies (ICWI) has been title sponsor of the Pink Run since 2015 and has donated over $10 million and helped to raise over $20 million. All funds raised from the Run go directly to JR2R.

Paul Lalor, President of the ICWI, is supportive of the initiative because it seeks to improve the quality of life of survivors.

“I have seen first-hand the effects and the strain that this disease places on families. We are not immune to the impact this disease has on women, and on the family members who must make sacrifices to prolong the lives of those they love. As corporate citizens, it feels right to support our women; when we support our women, we support families,” continues Lalor.

“We hope to raise awareness that breast cancer survivors must receive comprehensive, ongoing follow-up care and monitoring for recovery.”

This year the run was a huge success, indicating that Jamaicans are ready to hit the road again and support a good cause. According to Mrs. Samuda, “When the planning started many months ago, we were cognizant of the fact that Covid was still around, and that people may not come out to support a large event. This is why the decision was made to not only change venue, but the format of the race from ‘chip-timed’ to a “family fun run”, and this was probably the best decision we ever made. Support for the ICWI Pink Run started off with a bang at the press conference which was held in September; the buzz around town was that the Pink Run was going to be big this year.”

The turnout on race day did not disappoint, with over 6000 registrations and overwhelming support from corporate Jamaica, donors and numerous schools that took part. The ICWI Pink Run reported a record breaking contribution of over JM$10 million in net proceeds raised from the 20th staging on October 30th at Hope Gardens.

“Our teams were laser focused on ensuring we met the JM$5 million target needed for Reach to Recovery to continue to lend support to persons battling breast cancer; but this news is phenomenal. It marks the largest amount raised in a single year for this worthy cause,” professed President of ICWI, Paul Lalor.

Carolind Graham, chair of JR2R shared Mr. Lalor’s sentiment and added, “The sum was achieved through the registration of over 6,000 persons, sponsorship from a number of companies, donations from the public, and profits from fundraising merchandise sold. Our hearts are full and we are grateful and ready to continue the work we do through a spirit of volunteerism.”

After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the funds raised this year, combined with ICWI’s contribution signals some JM$27 million raised since 2015 when the insurance company took on the reins of the Run.

“Serving you is all we do.” 5

Vice President of ICWI and Head of the Pink Run Planning Committee, Samantha Samuda expressed that corporate sponsorships are necessary to the success of JR2R, as they have a significant impact on the lives of hundreds of breast cancer warriors in significant ways. “ICWI along with our other corporate sponsors will continue to support this organisation because the work they do is so vital to so many persons battling this dreadful disease. We also urge Jamaicans at home and abroad to donate whatever they can, whenever they can. The donation portal on the Reach To Recovery website will remain open all year round.”

The Pink Run Secretariat is anticipating that the family fun run, which raised just over JM$5 million at its last staging in 2019, should witness in excess of the 7,000 registrants in 2023.

6 ICWI Coverage Mar-Dec 2022
According to Mrs Graham, “2023 will be bigger and better.”

“We did quite a few things differently this year and we see where there is room for improvement. Our teams have already started to plan with these challenges in mind so they are ironed out ahead of next year’s event, and we continue to build

on the momentum of last year’s event. There is no doubt that the Pink Run will continue to grow, and maintain that fun family feel.”

“Serving you is all we do.” 7
Mrs Samuda lamented that the Pink Run organising committee has already started to put plans in place for 2023 by mitigating the hiccups experienced during the 2022 staging.

Chairperson of Jamaica Reach To Recovery (JR2R), Carolind Graham (2nd from right) and (from left) Chairperson of the ICWI Foundation, Valerie Reynolds and ICWI's VP of Marketing, HR and Distribution, Samantha Samuda along with ICWI's VP of Strategic Planning, Information Technology & Risk Management, Patrick Williams share a celebratory moment during a symbolic cheque handover of $1M during the launch of the 2022 ICWI Pink Run held at Toyota Jamaica on September 7.

DOMINICA ICWI awards five-year secondary school scholarship to former Newtown Primary School student

The Insurance Company of the West Indies (ICWI) has presented a full scholarship valued at EC$10,000 over five years to 11-year-old Janiyah Irving.

The scholarship award ceremony took place at the company’s Roseau offices on Friday, August 12, 2022.

Janiyah Irving is a former student of the Newtown Primary School who attained a Pass in the June 2022 Grade Six National Assessment. She will attend the Dominica Grammar School (DGS).

Country Manager of ICWI in Dominica, Earl Edwards noted the contribution would relieve Janiyah and her family of a significant part of the financial responsibility associated with her secondary school education.

“Today, we are committing to invest $10 000 into your five-year secondary school journey. The greater part of the investment has to come from you if you are to successfully complete this journey. The investment required on your part is your time and effort. Be diligent in your studies,” Edwards stated.

Since establishing offices in Dominica in November 2019, ICWI has awarded five-year scholarships to four (4) students to attend secondary schools.

“We want to thank the Dominica public for their support and patronage. It is because of your continued patronage that we in turn have been able to increase the number of scholarships that we offer. It is one of our ways of giving back to the people who have made us their insurer of choice,” he added.

Culture Day

Jamaica Branches

“Celebrating and Embracing Our Culture,” was the theme for ICWI’s culture day held on the 14th of October 2022. In the process of rebuilding from the impact of Covid-19, this proved an effective way of rekindling patriotism by commemorating our wonderful Jamaican heritage. Each branch/department was required to set up a table decorated with old time artefacts that represented Jamaica’s heritage. Additionally, participants were to provide a 30 second video clip showcasing the items on display.

To add to the day’s excitement, the HR team put together a quiz competition. The questions were generated from various categories such as History, Culture, Sports and Attractions. This section required speed and knowledge as the winner would have to be the first to submit all correct answers. Though the event was exhilarating, filled with fun and laughter, there could only be one winner for each category.

What was intentioned for an educational event in actuality proved very competitive and the level of team spirit exercised was commendable. So much so that all would agree...We need a do over!

If mention was to be made of all items demonstrated by each department, this would prove exhausting. However, a quick overview should suffice.

Pit toilet, cold fire, black and white television (stationed on JBC) were among the items displayed by Customer Service Direct – New Kingston. Patched clothes were hung out to dry around the Broker Department who also featured old time tape with old hits, Jamaican herbs and Jamaican food and treats.

“Serving you is all we do.” 11

The International Business Development Unit was decked in Jamaican colours and their display included kerosene lamp, food baskets and enamel mugs for tea.

Old time dancehall was in session over by the Head Office Claims department with old hits being played. Dance attendants could be seen wearing colourful dancehall attire. The staff were also engaged in ring games, dominos, hopscotch and chiney skip.

The Customer Care and Business Development Unit had Jamaican meals on display. Ackee and Saltfish, Mackerel run down, fried dumplings, boiled bananas and yams, while a well roasted breadfruit was sitting on fire sticks.

Human Resource/Administration Corporate and Compliance had money on display both coins and notes. Food Carrier, graters, old irons and pots were some of the many items showcased.

The Finance Department displayed a sewing machine, old time radio, a house phone, vaseline and runners or doiley’s for furniture.

MIS Culture Zone opened a one stop shop with Jamaican treats and other items on sale. These items were priced in old time currencies such as pound and shillings.

Browns Town Branch presented water pots, washing pans or bath pans, and a basket with ground provisions.

For the Sav-la-Mar Branch, one could see a mortar bucket and stick, rocking chair, china wears and an old time metal lamp.

The Mandeville Branch incorporated an old time scale, water goblet with face basin, spit cup, coasters of board and a scrubbing board among many other items in their presentation.

Lastly, the Ocho Rios branch displayed some wooden wall plaques, water goblet and face basin, cidar jar, seeping jar among many other items. Indeed, it was an exciting competition, and the level of teamwork executed cannot go unrecognized. Kudos to all the participants who made Culture Day 2022 a success. We could not have done it without you!

Third place winner was Customer Service Direct, New Kingston Second place winner was The Broker Department

Diwali Celebration in Trinidad & Tobago

The Diwali is a festival that commemorates the return of Prince Rama of Ayodhya, his wife Sita, and brother Lakshman after 14 years of exile. This is a Hindu tradition where Prince Rama is seen as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and an embodiment of dharma or righteousness. Sita is an incarnation of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. The residents of Ayodhya were so glad the rightful king and queen had returned, they lit lamps in their honor, an element of the festivities that's still an important part of the festivities today. It is celebrated in

October or November in accordance with the moon as the darkest night based on the Hindu calendar.

A number of branches across Trinidad and Tobago celebrated their Culture Day where staff were dressed in their traditional attire. This was done on the day before Diwali.

Special mention must be made of Sherrifa Maraj and Victoria Sankar of the Island Mall Branch who had some traditional treats on display. The Winner for the Best Dressed Competition was Leslie Soobransingh of the Port of Spain branch.

Dominica : Creole Day

Dominica celebrated its 44th anniversary of Independence on November 3, 2022, however cultural events took place from the beginning of October to kick off the Independence season. Nationals are expected to wear anything Creole on each Friday during the month of October. Our Country Manager Earl Edwards would normally be dressed in his madras shirt.

One of the highlights of Dominica’s Independence season is Creole Day (Jounen Kweyol) which is observed on the last Friday in October. Everyone is encouraged to dress in National

wear or variations of the National wear, eat local dishes and for those who can speak patois, to do so. Creole Day is the day when our culture truly comes alive.

Our staff came together for brunch on Creole Day which was indeed a treat. On the menu was an assortment of our local foods and drinks which were thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Christmas Tree Competition

ICWI held its first Christmas Tree competition and it was undoubtedly a major success. Festive season was upon us and everyone was feeling ‘Christmassy’. Branches/Departments were encouraged to put their festive creativity into action and use recycled materials to design trees with ‘regular Christmas ornaments or self made ornaments’. The entries were nothing short of amazing!

Trees were judged by an independent decorator based on four categories - originality, visual appeal/artistry, best use of environment-friendly materials and best use of handmade ornaments.

Claims Department nabbed the first prize with their well thought of and intricately designed Christmas tree, made from tissue paper and toilet paper. WINNER - Claims Department

International Coastal Clean-up 2022

Whether it’s to enjoy mouth-watering fried fish with your favourite beer, basked in the natural beauty of the heap of sea that swells silently on the shore, or just to get away from the hustle and bustle of life, the beach is the perfect escape where you can just relax and enjoy the moment. Despite these pristine waters being a safe haven for us locals and one of the biggest drivers of tourism in Jamaica, this valuable natural resource has become a garbage dump and the negative results have been devastating.

On the Ground – Palisadoes Strip

On September 17, 2022 ICWI being an agent of environmental sustainability joined thousands of volunteers across the island participating in International Coastal Clean-up initiatives. It might not be the most exciting way to spend the day at the beach, but it was definitely meaningful and the best way to get involved. International Coastal Cleanup Day is celebrated worldwide and is one of the largest volunteer events inspiring action to fight against marine litter in the sea and along coastlines.

ICWI 53rd Anniversary & Awards Ceremony

For several years, June 15th has been renowned for ICWI’s Anniversary and accompanying Awards ceremony and it is also the birthday of our founding father The Honourable Dennis Lalor. However, the 53rd staging was delayed due to the pandemic, which has forever changed the way we view the world, and resulted in the event being hosted on September 23, 2022 instead.

The Planning Committee was mindful of not creating a super spreader event and aimed to resume some level of normalcy by having a personal ceremony with awardees. The previous ceremony was hosted online, which has been the new norm, but this direct gathering did not disappoint.

Awardees attended dressed to the nines and while the event was not held at The Pegasus or another lavish venue as in prior years, but on the ground floor of our Head office, it was not to be found lacking. An element that may have added that extra touch of je ne sais quoi would have been live entertainment, but the lack thereof, owing once more to the pandemic, did not detract from the event.

The duty of in-house presenter was shared between the eloquent Mrs. Alrea Washington-Hoilett and the enthusias-

tic Mrs. Jeneil Chang as Mrs. Washington-Hoilett was this year also an awardee, having served ICWI for thirty years. Mrs. Washington-Hoilett spirited attendees through the first segment, while Mrs. Chang ushered them through the latter portion of the ceremony so Mrs. Washington-Hoilett was free to bask in a well deserved milestone in her insurance career.

She joined the other thirty-three awardees which also included our President Mr. Paul Lalor who were all lauded for their years of service to the company ranging from five, ten, fifteen, twenty, and thirty years. A video clip from the department of each awardee was also shared during the ceremony highlighting their contributions to the team.

2021 saw a member from the Portmore branch, namely, Sherece Williams, securing the Signature Sales Leader Award. The Mandeville branch on the other hand, copped two awards this year. Firstly, Branch of the Year and secondly, Keisha Gordon, walked away with the Star Award. Ocho Rios was not to be left out as they were also victorious in two categories, a feat accomplished for two consecutive years. Most Improved Agent of the Year was won by Charlene Green and Karen Silvera snagged the Qubert Gordon Agent of the Year.

“Serving you is all we do.” 23

A new Employee of the Year was also selected for 2021. Shane Hall of the Constant Spring/Liguanea branch won that elusive award, while first and second runner up were awarded to Shane Clarke of the accounts department and Samantha Henry of the claims department respectively.

Miguel Palmer of the legal department undertook the reply on behalf of the awardees and began by quoting our chairman The Honourable Dennis Lalor. His speech very succinctly echoed the sentiments of the awardees and wounded down what was a phenomenal afternoon. The closing remarks were made by our President Mr. Paul Lalor, who brought the presentation aspect of the ceremony to a close. The attendees were then feted to a delectable meal that warmed palates and hearts as everyone got to relax and converse with teammates, some of whom they had not seen prior to the pandemic.

2021 was a fantastic year, pandemic or not, and the race is now on to see who the next winners will be. Congratulations to all the awardees!

Employee of the Year-Shane Hall (Liguanea Branch)

Shane is a dedicated and hardworking member of the ICWI team and holds the values of the organization in high regard. He is not one to break under pressure and is a very helpful individual who will go above and beyond to ensure that targets

are met. Shane also interacts well with staff and has the ability to form business relationships and source new business. He has grown tremendously since joining the ICWI team and we expect great things from our Employee of the year 2021.

The coveted title of Profit Centre of the Year for 2021 went to the Mandeville Branch, but this was no surprise for the “Lady in Charge”, Branch Manager Valrie Tomlinson. In early 2021 Valrie and her team set their sights on bringing home the trophy to their branch. The award was made even more special given the fact that Mrs. Tomlinson was retiring.
