FRIENDS AND PARTNERS It gives us great pride to present to you this annual Report to the Community, as 2019 was truly an unforgettable year in the life and work of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. We couldn’t have asked for a more exciting start to the year than the historic, four-week engagement of Hamilton—which energized our city and inspired audiences unlike anything else in recent memory. During its run, the Broadway phenomenon attracted more than 88,000 people to our Cultural District. They experienced, firsthand, the creativity and innovation that made the centuries-old story of our nation’s founding fathers and mothers feel unexpectedly relevant and unifying. In reflecting on Hamilton’s central themes of honor and legacy, we are reminded—in this the Trust’s 35th year—of the powerful impact the arts have had on our region. In Hamilton, the title character asks: “What is a legacy? It’s planting seeds in a garden you never get to see.” For the Trust, those seeds were planted in 1984 by Jack Heinz and his “band of dreamers,” who sought to rewrite Pittsburgh’s narrative, and demonstrate how the arts could enrich the quality of life in our region. Jack Heinz and his dreamers laid the foundation for a legacy that we are proud to build upon year after year. In 2019, we celebrated many milestones and historic achievements; this report is our way of “telling our story.”
In the pages that follow, you will find images and words that capture the spirit of an unforgettable year. In serving our core mission, we have aspired to create meaningful experiences for audiences and patrons that underscore the power of art to bring us together and enrich the human experience. Throughout 2019, we celebrated notable anniversaries of many of our signature events and series—including the 60th year of the Cultural Trust’s Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival and the 50th year of the Cultural Trust’s Pittsburgh Dance Council—reminding us of the staying power and lasting impact of the arts. We launched a brand-new series, Liberty Magic, taking another step in the ongoing evolution of our artistic programming. Through it all, and across our diverse platforms, we continue to witness the

power of art to create a sense of community. Every show, every experience, every heart that has been touched has been part of the legacy we wish to build: something for everyone! The achievements of the past year would not have been possible without the support of organizations and individuals who share our vision and enhance our impact: our outstanding resident companies, our talented administrative team, our generous sponsors, donors, and members, our supportive elected officials, our deeply committed Board of Trustees, our extraordinary team of volunteers and front-of-house staff, and of course, you—our dedicated partners, supporters, and audiences.
THANK YOU!

BUILDING A
LEGACY
1987 The Trust launches an ambitious plan to transform the downtown Pittsburgh Cultural District into a worldclass arts and entertainment destination.
In the 1970s, amid a backdrop of closing steel mills and struggling communities, a section of Liberty Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh emerged as the hub for the city’s sex industry. Quickly catching on as a red-light district, this stretch of downtown became home to strip bars, XXX theaters, and adult-themed shops. As the district grew, so too did an undercurrent of vice and crime—effectively erasing this section of downtown from the daily footprint of many Pittsburghers.

TREK Development Group, in cooperation with the Trust, establishes 900 Penn Avenue as one of the Cultural District’s first residential loft-style developments.
The story of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust began as a vision of what could be—held in the minds of a hopeful few. It was in 1984 that Jack Heinz and his “band of dreamers” committed to rewriting the city’s narrative. Together, they aspired to show how the arts could serve as a catalyst for economic, commercial, and residential development, all while enriching the quality of life for residents and visitors alike. Rather than abandoning the seediest part of downtown, Heinz and his “dreamers”—like-minded private citizens and public leaders—set their sights on transforming and revitalizing the district, while retaining the historically significant elements already there. The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust was founded in 1984, and from there, Jack Heinz set out to appoint the organization’s first president and chief executive officer. He sought a leader with great vision, a passion for the arts, and the fearlessness needed to help the fledgling organization pursue its lofty aspirations. Heinz found such a leader in Carol Brown, who was named President and CEO in 1986.

BUILDING A LEGACY
In her role, Brown oversaw the signature Trust projects that spurred downtown’s transformation: the renovation of the Benedum, Byham and Harris theaters, the building of the O’Reilly Theater, and the opening of Wood Street Galleries. In addition to these higher profile projects, Brown’s early responsibilities included marketing, community outreach, and fundraising—all of which were especially challenging during some of Pittsburgh’s economic downturns. But perhaps the crowning accomplishment in Brown’s illustrious career is the development of the Cultural District as a whole. In addition to leading theater restoration efforts, Brown played a key role in creating the Agnes R. Katz Plaza, Allegheny Riverfront Park, and other public art pieces that helped solidify the District as Pittsburgh’s center for arts and culture. As the Trust’s first president and CEO, Brown’s accomplishments and impact laid the foundation for future success.

Kevin McMahon assumed the role of CED after Carol Brown stepped down in 2000. In the years that have followed, McMahon has built upon Brown’s success and helped to take the organization to the next level by expanding its programming and broadening its reach. During McMahon’s tenure as president, the Trust has gained several notable programming divisions, including the Pittsburgh Dance Council, the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival, and Highmark First Night Pittsburgh. The Trust has engaged growing audiences, hitting milestone numbers in both members and subscribers. McMahon continues to lead efforts to diversify both programming and audiences, while continuing to cultivate an active, thriving Cultural District. The story of the Trust is ongoing, and its legacy is in the making; but in its first 35 years, its impact has been undeniable. There is no doubt that the success of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust—and the Cultural District—has been tied to the overall renaissance that the city of Pittsburgh has enjoyed in recent years. Embracing the challenges and opportunities that come with the future, the Trust looks forward to the next 35 years. B U I L D I N G

BUILDING A LEGACY OF INNOVATION...
In even the most turbulent times, art has the power to rejuvenate the spirit and soothe the soul. While it resonates differently in each of us, art transcends all barriers, allowing us to see the world in new ways and to see ourselves in one another. At its best, art is what makes us human— and what makes us whole.

S R A T Infinity Room
In 2019, the Trust’s visual arts galleries featured groundbreaking exhibitions that challenged long-held perceptions and culturally biased assumptions. Through this celebration of innovation and diversity, our galleries showcased the transcendent power of art. Audiences were moved, curiosity was sparked, and we enjoyed increased attendance and engagement. In January, Wood Street Galleries presented Infinity Room, an immersive experience conceived by award-winning artist

Refik Anadol, which utilized contemporary algorithms, moving projections, light, sound, and mirrors. The audio/visual installation induced a state of consciousness in which the subject’s awareness of physical self was transformed. Infinity Room reimagines the conventional flat cinema projection screen as a three-dimensional and seemingly infinite space, blurring the boundaries between actual/fictional and physical/virtual. Istanbulborn Anadol conceived the project in 2015 as an “opportunity to freshly perceive ourselves and the world around us.” V I S U A L

Liminality 3.0
Anadol’s Liminality 3.0 was commissioned by the Trust as a world premiere at Wood Street Galleries in 2019. In Liminality 3.0, the poetics of light bending is explored. Inspired by Isaac Newton’s experiments with light, the installation bent laser light in unpredictable angles to create an architectural light and soundscape. As the recipient of a number of awards and prizes, including Microsoft Research’s Best Vision Award and Google’s Art and Machine Intelligence Artist Residency Award, Anadol’s work explores how perception and experience of time and space are radically changing now that machines have all but colonized our everyday lives. In March, 937 Gallery featured the exhibition, We Are All Related, by local portrait photographer, Andrea London. The exhibition was comprised of portraits of a diverse crosssection of area residents, including a variety of ages, skin colors, national origins and sexual identities. Compelled to combat the racism and xenophobia she was witnessing in 2016, London sought to show that “we are all connected on a very fundamental human level”—despite all of our perceived differences.

The Trust partnered with the Humanities Center at Carnegie Mellon University to host the fourth annual Pittsburgh Humanities Festival. Crazy Rich Asians author, Kevin Kwan, led the Festival’s Featured Event with a compelling discussion on the importance of representation in Hollywood. Core Conversations engaged a range of both local and national figures, including former Pittsburgh Post-Gazette cartoonist, Rob Rogers; magician Lee Terbosic; and social media guru, Chancelor Humphrey. Together, Festival presenters continued to engage the community in “smart talk about stuff that matters.”
Across its ten days, the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival welcomed more than 500,000 people to downtown Pittsburgh for a unique—and community-building—celebration of the arts. The fact that Dollar Bank, a community bank, sponsors the festival, makes this annual celebration that much more meaningful.

2019 HIGHLIGHTS
The Trust Arts Education Department kicked off 2019 by hosting nearly 2,700 students as part of the Hamilton Education Program sponsored by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. The program, known as EduHam, dedicated what would have been a public performance of Hamilton to a fullcapacity audience of students and educators from 41 Title I high schools across Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio. The program also included an innovative curriculum about the Founding Era, with a select number of students being chosen to create and perform Hamilton-inspired original songs, poems, and dramatic scenes on the Benedum stage. In addition, Hamilton cast members held a question-and-answer session with students following the show. Mayor William Peduto provided support for EduHam by securing the David L. Lawrence Convention Center as the lunch venue for the students.
Dr. Kymberly Cruz, Arts Education Senior Program Officer for Pittsburgh Public Schools, coordinated participation from 800 students from Pittsburgh Public High Schools. The Hamilton Education Program was launched with funding from the Rockefeller Foundation, the producers of Hamilton, the Miranda family, and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. With substantial support from the Trust and these funders, tickets for the Hamilton education program special performance were only $10 each.

Our Trust Arts Education Center was fully activated during National Arts in Education Week in September. This annual celebration recognizes the transformative power of the arts in education. Created by Congress in 2010, the program supports equitable access to the arts for all students. During this year’s celebration, we launched a StoryCorner series, offering free arts-integrated sessions each morning for young children and their caregivers. A public chalk mural was installed on the sidewalk that included playful elements to further engage families and children as they passed by. In October, we launched The Poetry Project, an innovative program which explored poetry as a springboard for performances that are designed specifically for teen audiences. Our inaugural show, Edgar Allan Poe: Master of Macabre, presented an immersive, multi-media theatrical experience, where audiences contributed to the artistry of the show. In 2019, we saw significant growth in our professional development programs with new topics, new partners, and many new teachers. We also deepened our engagement and support of Trust Arts Teaching Artists through a robust offering of professional development opportunities, including a lending library of books and materials to reduce financial burdens, an online database to share resources and foster community, and an annual Continuing Education Reimbursement to support individual professional development needs. We established a partnership with Dreams of Hope, Pittsburgh’s only artsfocused organization for queer and allied youth. Dreams of Hope is in its eighteenth season of generating radical, healing, and groundbreaking art. This new partnership provided an opportunity to increase and expand educational offerings for youth, as well as create a central location for participants to gather and work creatively. During this residency in the Trust Arts Education Center, Dreams of Hope increased the vibrancy of the Cultural District by programming a series of playwriting workshops, readings, and performances. In 2019, Trust Arts Education programs served 26,676 people of all ages throughout the Greater Pittsburgh region. Trust teaching artists led 3,895 hours of arts-integrated and educational programs, including a wide variety of pre- and post-show talks, single session workshops, multi-session residencies, performances, and professional development events.

Critical Mass: Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival
2019 HIGHLIGHTS In 2019, we celebrated the fifteenth anniversary of the BNY Mellon Presents JazzLive Series, which continues to bring free, weekly jazz performances to the heart of the Cultural District—featuring many of the region’s finest jazz artists, as well as ticketed performances showcasing nationally and internationally recognized artists. The world-class musicianship of participating JazzLive artists is complemented by the talents of emcee, Bob Studebaker, who has been a part of the series since its inception in 2004. To celebrate the milestone anniversary of JazzLive, we bookended the year with major celebrations, including a party with a special jam session hosted by Roger Humphries’ + RH Factor in January, and a New Year’s Eve celebration featuring Roger Humphries’ Big Band at the end of the year. We also marked the expansion of the BNY Mellon Presents JazzLive ticketed series beyond April’s Jazz Appreciation Month, to present nationally recognized jazz artists throughout the year. This year’s season included the Ron S T R A T E G I C
Carter Quartet, An Evening with Kenny Garrett, the Shamie Royston Quintet and the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra Holiday Concert Featuring Sean Jones with Special Guest René Marie. We proudly presented guitarist Joe Negri with the annual JazzLive Legacy Award in recognition of his role and significant contribution to jazz in Pittsburgh. The award was presented to Negri during a Jazz Appreciation Month concert at the Greer Cabaret Theater, featuring the Ron Carter Quartet. In February, we welcomed alternative R&B, neo-soul group, Moonchild, to the Trust Arts Education Center for a special concert. Immediately following the concert, an after-party co-hosted by Pittsburgh based promotional group, Make Sure You Have Fun™ was held in The Graeme House, located in downtown Pittsburgh’s Market Square.

Gallery Crawl in the Cultural District
In March, in celebration of Women’s History Month, we partnered with Robert Morris University’s Women’s Leadership and Mentorship Program to present the opening reception for the Fourth Annual Women & Transformational Leadership Symposium. Demetria Boccella, founder of Fashion Africana and 2019 Trust Humanities Festival Core Conversation participant, delivered the reception’s keynote address on celebrating black beauty through the art of inclusion. Our Strategic Partnerships and Community Engagement department marked the first night of the 60th Anniversary of the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival with the Festival’s first ever opening night after-party—Critical Mass. Immediately following the Festival’s India.Arie concert, the audience was treated to this high-energy street party just outside of Point State Park, on the Stanwix Stage. The Critical Mass after party was created to engage more diverse audiences with the Festival and featured the DJ performance group, UNION which showcases three of the city’s top DJs on stage at the same time: DJ Big Phill, DJ Blakk Steel, and DJ Selecta. Through our quarterly Gallery Crawls, the Trust continued to invigorate the Cultural District with innovative art in traditional and nontraditional spaces. Our visual arts galleries were energized by diverse audiences and exhibitions, while outdoor spaces were activated with public art, music, and performing art. The fall Crawl featured a one-night-only World Market in partnership with All for All artisan network, which showcased one-of-a-kind original art from many of the region’s finest artisans, representing the African Diaspora, and some of the region’s immigrant communities.

Our Strategic Partnerships and Community Engagement department established its new mission and vision to redefine the department’s focus and to align with the Trust’s new strategic direction. Departmental efforts were concentrated on identifying gaps in audience representation, building new partnerships, and creating audience development initiatives to address them. Two examples of 2019’s new strategic partners include Shuman Juvenile Detention Center and ACH Clear Pathways. The partnership with Shuman Juvenile Detention Center was established to present Liberty Magic artist, Billy Kidd, for a special performance and workshop series at the center for its residents and staff. The partnership with youth arts organization, ACH Clear Pathways, was formed in an effort to expand the reach of Highmark First Night Pittsburgh’s puppetmaking workshops in the city’s Hill District. Through the development of new relationships with strategic partners, such as these, the Trust can ensure that its connections to our communities continue to flourish.

Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Master Plan 2020
BUILDING A LEGACY OF PROGRESS... Nothing tells the story of our legacy better than the changing landscape of downtown Pittsburgh. One of the crown jewels of our city is its thriving Cultural District, which has transformed from a seedy, red-light district to a destination for arts and entertainment. In an effort to continue to enhance the Cultural District, and serve as a model for other cities, the Trust made meaningful progress in real estate development in 2019. 2 8

Master Plan Stakeholder Meeting
Eighth Street Block The overall vision for the Eighth Street Block, as a mixed-use development project, came into sharper focus in 2019. After two years of in-depth planning with members of the Trust team, the District Design Committee, and various external stakeholders and constituencies, the Master Plan was finalized. This document will inform the future development of the property while remaining flexible to the needs of the growing Cultural District over the next seven to 10 years. Additionally, in 2019, a key piece of the Eighth Street Block pre-development was finalized. Working in collaboration with the Pittsburgh Parking Authority, the Trust coordinated the demolition of the Authority’s former garage, and the Trustowned Duff’s Building in the most
820 Liberty Avenue In 2019, the renovation of the former Trust-owned Palace Credit building, located at 820 Liberty Avenue, was completed. The building was sold to Grandview Development, who made a $6,000,000 investment to create upper-floor residential units and an upgraded first-floor retail space. The Trust will be responsible for attracting a tenant to the first-floor space, which is in keeping with the Trust’s desire to activate Liberty Avenue with vibrant and complimentary uses.

efficient and fiscally prudent manner. Furthermore, through cooperation with the Parking Authority, we engaged in discussions to ensure that the footprint of the new public garage will align with the Trust’s Master Plan. Lastly, the Trust witnessed the opening of the first residential development project in the Eighth Street Block. Trek Development, in partnership with Q Development, completed a 140-unit residential tower on the corner of Eighth Street and Penn Avenue. This project was made possible as a result of a land sale of Trust-owned property to the developers. In addition, the Trust District Design Committee provided design oversight including the recommended installation of the Erwin Redl lighted art bridge which connects the new Trust Oasis art park with the center of the Eighth Street Block. 820 Liberty Avenue: Before and After

937 Liberty Avenue In preparation for a 2020 construction project, the Trust completed the building evaluation and design work for 937 Liberty Avenue. This Trustowned building currently incubates small arts organizations and houses a visual arts gallery. The project calls for a renovation of plumbing requirements on all three floors and improvements to the overall safety of the building.
Cineplex Working with a team of architects, the Trust concluded the design of the future Cineplex project in the former Bally’s Health Club on Sixth Street. In addition, the Trust identified a successful movie theater operator through a selective RFP process.

A LEGACY
2019 was a banner year for fundraising, as more than $15 million was committed for operations, special projects, capital needs, and endowment—exceeding key goals. Furthermore, the Trust continues to receive generous increased support for its many arts education programs from all major constituent groups. Also, this past year, the organization achieved a wonderful milestone—surpassing 15,000 annual members! In celebration of the 60th Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival in 2019, the Trust, along with generous donations made by her family and friends, established the Barbara L. Widdoes Endowment Fund to bring roving artists to the footprint of the Festival. Barbara “Babs” Widdoes was part of the original group of young women who launched the Three Rivers Arts Festival, and her leadership and vision allowed the Festival to grow into what it is today. Ms. Widdoes had a special affinity for roving performers, and in 2019, the endowment helped underwrite the Tut’Zanni Theatre Company’s street clowns, Beep and Bop.
Dance in the District Gala The extravagance and scale of the 2019 Gala required not one, but two venues: the Byham Theater and the neighboring Renaissance Hotel. Surpassing attendance and fundraising goals, the sumptuous evening, hosted by Gala Chairs Kim and Curt Fleming of the Tillotson family and Lead Sponsor Hefren-Tillotson, featured a special performance by internationally renowned dance company MOMIX and culminated in guests putting on their own dance show to tunes spun by DJ Azara.

MEMBER EVENTS Through special member events, guests were able to engage with the arts in new and innovative ways, while supporting Trust programming and the ongoing development of the Cultural District: Highmark First Night Pittsburgh – First Night Friends Thousands of revelers flocked downtown to ring in 2020 at Highmark First Night Pittsburgh for the familyfriendly event priced at only $10 per admission button. Guests who upgraded to the First Night Friends package enjoyed priority seating at the numerous performances— from magic to comedy to acrobatics— that took place throughout the Cultural District. They also enjoyed reserved parking and access to the First Night Friends Lounge, sponsored by Citizens Bank, with appetizers, an over-the-top hot chocolate bar, and activities for the kids, including balloon sculptures and face-painting.
Footwork Guests danced the night away under neon lights at this special postGallery Crawl dance party geared toward young professionals. Between snapping selfies and twirling glow sticks, guests enjoyed drinks, appetizers, and music in the Peirce Studio in the Trust Arts Education Center. Footwork was sponsored by UPMC and UPMC Health Plan.
