Ed’s note The end of the year generates lots of emotions in each of us. Depending on our experiences of the past 12 months, the end of 2013 could mean the end of a challenge for some and the promise of the exciting new journey of life for other. We encourage everyone to take time and reflect on 2013 and minimize the mistakes we made then and look ahead to 2014 as a year of opportunities to pursue and make a positive difference. Let us make those firm decisions and try our best to sticking to them more especially those fruitful ones. Christmas is a time of giving a time of sharing with family and friends. Let’s us not forget to give and share with the unfortunates as well. Christmas is also a time to count our blessings and thank the Lord for all that he has given us.

DAY OF RECONCILLIATION 6 December is a day of great significant in South Africa due to two historical events that took place. The first of these was in 1838, when the Battle of Blood River took place between the Voortrekkers and the Zulus. The Voortrekkers, having moved into the interior of South Africa during the Great Trek, were eager to settle on land. The region that they intended to settle on was already inhabited by the Zulu people. Thus the Voortrekker leader, Piet Retief was eager to negotiate with the Zulu chief Dingane. Having misunderstood Retief's intentions, Dingane planned an ambush and murdered Retief and his party of 100 people. This act culminated in the Battle of Blood River, in which 470 Voortrekkers, having the advantage of gunpowder, defeated the 10 000 strong Zulu army. This Voortrekker victory was commemorated since then as the Day of the Vow. The second historical event that took place on 16 December was in 1961, when Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) was formed. This was the military wing of the African National Congress (ANC), which was launched to wage an armed struggle against the apartheid government. Prior to its formation, the ANC had largely approached the fight against apartheid through passive resistance, but after the Sharpeville Massacre in 1960, where peaceful protestors were indiscriminately shot by police, passive resistance was no longer seen as an effective approach in bringing apartheid to an end. MK mostly performed acts of sabotage, but its effectiveness was hampered by organizational problems and the arrest of its leaders in 1963. Despite this, its formation was commemorated every year since 1961. South Africa's first non-racial and democratic government was tasked with promoting reconciliation and national unity. One way in which it aimed to do this symbolically was to acknowledge the significance of the 16 December in both the Afrikaner and liberation struggle traditions and to rename this day as the Day of Reconciliation. On 16 Decem-

The Day of Goodwill (Public Holiday) The Day of Good Will better known to most as Boxing Day. The Day of Goodwill which is official South African public holiday that falls on the day after Christmas each year. It was renamed by the South African Government in 1994 to sever ties to a colonial past, the holiday was initially created in honour of the time when people in the UK spent their day ‘boxing up’ their lovely Christmas gifts. The Day of Goodwill is best celebrated with family and friends at the beach, next to a braai, or simply by practicing goodwill unto others and sharing in the South African summer festivities.

FEW TIPS ON DISCOVERING YOUR HIDDEN POTENTIAL BY

It doesn’t matter if it’s a financial, physical, intellectual, or spiritual goal. Imagine what it feels like to have already achieved your goal. Get in commitment mode. How bad do you want to achieve the goal? What resources will you bring to bear in going after it? What sacrifices are you willing to make? If I am writing it down on paper, I am also writing it down in my head and imprinting it on my soul.

DEREK CLARK’S PERSONAL SECRETS TO SUCCESS!

Have fun.

These tips have consistently helped Derek achieve significant amounts of success. Formulate a vision. Have goals and get ready to rock. Take action now. Any action will create motion and motion means you that are moving. Make use of your time instead of being used by it. Find purpose. If you have no purpose in life, you just bounce around in mediocrity. If you look around you and cannot find a purpose, try putting yourself in a new environment. New horizons force us to look at the world in a different way, and fresh ideas come from fresh surroundings.

What good is making money if you don’t know how to have any fun with it? Know how to laugh. A good, honest belly-laugh is more precious than gold. The days of our lives should not be filled with misery and grouchiness. A day without a laugh is a day that is wasted.

I know I am fully committed. I will do whatever it takes to make the dream a reality.

Define your goals very clearly and precisely.

It helps you map out and anticipate obstacles. It also helps you break the big goal down into smaller goals. Shortrange goals are the stepping-stones on the way to achieving big things. Big goals don’t get achieved overnight, but Vance Havner said it perfectly when the little goals add up quickly, and when he said, “Vision is not enough. It must the big victory finally happens, it will be combined with venture. It is not feel like it happened overnight. My enough to stare up the steps, we must overnight success took almost sixteen step up the stairs.” years to accomplish, so I was not surThink of the first steps you are going to prised when it happened. I’d spent every make. Step one is always believe in day of my life working towards it. yourself. But it all starts with a goal. I write down my goals so that I can map out the means of getting there.

If it was easy, it wouldn’t be worth it. Obstacles will come, oh yes they will. For me, working hard is a daily business. It is a marathon, not a sprint. “Success is not a result of luck. It is a result of how you spend your free time.” I always have a few different goals, so that when I need a break from one I can focus on another. Very few painters work only on one piece at a time—they work on many. Put passion into all your actions, and have many actions devoted to different passions. Tell yourself that you are going to have a life that counts. You are going to make an effort to never give up. You are full of determination. You are ready to work hard and play hard. You will be the master of your time. Let go of your mistakes; today is a new day. Be ground zero for an epidemic of positivity. You are going to be a doer and not a procrastinator. You are going to be a dreamer and not a dream-denier. You are going to hang out with others who lift you up and encourage your selfactualization. Shed your bad habits, and let good habits take root through repetition.

Life is about making progress. People are going to try and talk you out of your dreams. They will suck up your time with nay-saying, or criticize you and pick you apart. But you tell them that Derek said to back off. Stay away from

To be successful, we must be strategic in taking risks. Risks will take us to untamed and uncharted territory, but it is in these places that we become all we can be. Stay creative. Sometimes you will have to sit quiet for thirty minutes, so you can clear your mind of all the noise. You will be amazed at what ideas or revelations come to you when you just put aside all the distractions of modern life.

those people who are imprisoned by negativity. They’re not even doing good for themselves, so how can they possibly be doing good for you?

Don’t worry about failing. It is nothing. It is the voice of other people ringing inside our heads. Failure is a great teacher and in a way has been my friend all along. Remember Thomas Edison’s quote: “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Failure is also a test. Failure might be telling us that we need to change direction and execute a different plan of attack or a new strategy.

I hope that you are no longer afraid to envision a better future. I hope that you are ready to live life without limits. As long as you still have breath in your lungs, there is time to start over. As long as there is blood running in your veins, you have time to make your dreams happen. We have the rest of our lives from this moment on to realize our ambitions. Change the world by changing yourself. Once you are confident about your own ability to achieve, you can help create a world of achievers and leaders through your example. Never limit your life, and never give up!

Soap Making What skills are helpful? It would be useful to get some training from an experienced soap maker. An understanding of the materials you're using will grow as you gain some experience. There's a touch of artistry involved in creating homemade soap.

What tools are needed? Besides your basic business tools like a phone, computer and internet there are some specific tools that your candle making business will need. You'll want to develop your fragrance library for scenting your soaps. If you are going to offer different shapes and sizes for that ‘unique’ quality then soap moulds will be needed. Other tools will be the ingredients for your soaps. Each different type of soap will have its own special ingredients. You may want to also offer a fragrance free alternative for the growing number of people who are sensitive to fragrances.

How do you get started? Begin by first taking care of any legal issues. Do a bit of research to make sure that you're conforming to any local laws that would apply to selling a skin care product. From here you can move onto your website and developing an online presence. Become known at some online forums/message boards so that you can begin to get the word out about your new business venture. You can market yourself offline by giving soap gifts during the holidays, birthdays, etc. Sign up for a local craft fair or bizarre to market yourself locally. Keep in mind that running your own business will require a lot of time, especially making soaps which is very time consuming.

To build a successful soap making business you’ll need to work hard. It may help to write out goals that you can easily review each day to track your progress. Reward yourself for your hard work, keep a positive attitude and hang in there when the going gets tough. Your soap making business success depends on you!

Beauty and Brains Portia Matshidiso Mngomezulu sets up her own skincare range

Portia says she was born to be an entrepreneur. Her mother used to make curtains and beddings for a living so Portia would take the left over material and make scatter cushions and sell them for pocket money for herself. The 32 year old has established her own company called Portia M Skin

Solution, which produces skin products derived from Marula Oil. She says it was her mother in-laws advise to use the oil to get rid of the stretch marks after she had given birth and to her surprise it worked wonders. Portia says she introduced the product to her friends and she realized it made a positive impact on their skin.

“I saw a business opportunity to make it in the beauty products and I did my research she said Matshidiso-Mngomezulu then approached Nova Oils, a pharmaceuticals company, to help her create a full range of beauty products: face cleanser, toner, moisturizer, and bath-and-shower gel. Portia says using the full range will give you the extra benefits of the marula. She says from her personal experience it softens dry skin, evens out blotchy skin and it’s good for eczema.

Portia is working on baby care range and men range. She says her company Portia M Skin Solution has 20 sales agents to help her fulfill her goal of seeing her products in retail. Matshidiso-Mngomezulu has clients around the world, including in Nigeria, Germany, and the UK .
