Plant exports down almost 40% during 2021 so far
British horticulture businesses choosing not to pursue markets in the EU.
“We had long suspected that this heavy-handed regime would put too many barriers in the way of those who had hoped to grow a customer base in Europe,” said James Clark, Director of Policy and Communications at the HTA.
First-hand experiences of HTA members tell a story of businesses frustrated by problems transporting their live plants combined with the additional costs and complexity of inspections and necessary paperwork. These factors combined mean that it simply isn’t viable for many to trade with customers on the continent.
Increased costs and restrictions on the UK horticulture industry to export to the EU have seen a marked drop in the value of trade in the first six months of the year, demonstrating a missed opportunity for the sector to grow its contribution to UK ‘green trade’.
Research conducted by the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) shows that exports of live plants and plant materials from the UK to the EU between January and June this year were valued at £9.7m, compared with £16m in the same period of 2019 – a decrease of 39%.
Rest of the world sales have remained broadly static. This, says the HTA, shows that the although the EU is still the largest market for British horticultural products, the industry is not growing as it could. Extra new administrative costs and restrictions are resulting in
Agrovista UK electrifies delivery fleet
Agrovista UK has started its journey towards replacing its delivery fleet with electric powered vehicles.
Agrovista UK is committed to reducing its carbon emissions and recently revealed that it has already set out a new range of measures and commitments designed to improve the health of the planet.
Chris Sprigg, Strategy and Planning Manager, offered a greater insight: “The use of diesel is our biggest CO2 emission so if we can move to a sustainable electricity supply as an alternative then that will put us on the right track towards our net carbon zero objectives. We have already moved onto electric vehicles for our car fleet, and I’m pleased to say that we currently have 44 vehicles in this respect.
“Furthermore, we have already started to install electric vehicle charging points at the depots and the objective is to have every

with charging points by the end of 2022.”

“Much of the £24bn horticulture industry is made up of small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) who want to champion ‘green trade’ and export the hugely iconic British plants, seeds and trees we produce here.
“However, the bureaucratic obstacles and huge costs are making it business-sapping and unviable. This is preventing SMEs to grow and lead a postBrexit trade renaissance.”
The HTA has launched a campaign called ‘Let Britain Grow’, calling for the Government to review existing inspection levels and costs and negotiate a plant health agreement between the UK and the EU. This will enable the multi-billion pound sector to boost the nation’s economic growth and fuel international trade post-Brexit.

The season is changing and countdown to the long-awaited return to the NEC Birmingham and SALTEX is well under way.
Registration for the exhibition and seminar programme is open and the exhibitors are finalising their plans for the 2021 event.
Of course, we have all come to accept the ever-shifting environment we have been living in since early 2020 so it waits to be seen how SALTEX will be embraced by the wider industry.
There have been a few outdoor events this summer – SAGE and the Festival of Turf being the main ones, but individual companies and dealers have also been staging their own demonstrations and roadshows – and it is good to see SAGE already making plans for a 2022 outdoor event.
The move back indoors for SALTEX 2021 in November and BTME 2022 next January will be a big step for the industry, but we have all learned how to be more adaptable and flexible in the last 18 months so hopefully both events will be well-attended and prove successful
This month we have our Professional Groundscare supplement which reflects the switch from summer to autumn with features on Weed & Pest Control and Sweepers, Collectors, Blowers and Vacuums.
We also take a look at the wider area of Estate Management as the weather starts to take a turn towards more harsher conditions
It has been a good summer and the industry as a whole has started to open up a lot more for the first time since early 2020. Hopefully that

Government urges the nation to be more active
A new report from the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee calling for an increased focus of getting the nation active.
The ‘Sport in our communities’ inquiry looked at the impact of the coronavirus (Covid19) pandemic on people’s individual activity levels –using Sport England’s own Active Lives data – as well as the effect it had on sports clubs and physical activity providers.
Issues discussed in the report include the loss of revenue from the temporary closure of facilities and clubs during the restrictions imposed, and what impact it will have on the longterm survival of the sport and physical activity sector.
It also proposes ideas about how to keep supporting people, especially children, whose
activity levels have declined during the pandemic, to be active.
“We welcome the spotlight on how the nation can be helped to get more active following the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Tim Hollingsworth, chief executive of Sport England.
“Our priority groups include children, women, disabled people and people from black, Asian and ethnic minority backgrounds, whose activity levels have declined since the pandemic started.
“Since Covid-19 began, we’ve had two areas of focus: helping to keep the nation active and supporting the sport and physical activity sector.
“To support the sport and physical activity sector to stay afloat, we have provided over £270 million of National
Zero turn for the sporting life
With extensive grass areas to maintain, Farnham Estate Spa and Golf Resort needs a strong mowing armoury, and a Kubota ZD 1211 zero turn mower is proving a real allrounder.
Golf and Estate Manager Barry Smith explains it is an Americanstyle course with extensive buggy paths, wildflower meadows and areas of scrub that are maintained annually to keep the natural look.
With such large area of turf, plus large formal lawns which are used for weddings and other events – there are more than seven acres of grass around the hotel itself and a further four and half acres around Farnham Lake – a variety of mowing equipment is used.
“I asked Clarkes of Cavan to demonstrate the Kubota ZD 1211 zero turn and within an hour I knew I had to have it for the ease of changing cut height alone,” he explains. “You simply lift the deck, choose the required height on a dial next to the driver’s seat and away you go.”
With areas to cut ranging from the front of the hotel at 4cm to grass around Farnham Lake at 5-10cm, this feature has proved invaluable. The zero turn design’s unique manoeuvrability with the ability to turn 360deg in its own length opened up a whole range of opportunities, he points out.
“We have an orchard where we previously had to strim around the trees but now we can mow right up to them. There are numerous obstacles to cut around, from the rotunda where wedding ceremonies take place to trees and shrub beds in the parkland, which it does brilliantly. The outfront position of the deck is also really helpful to get under the branches of trees.”
On the golf course rough, semiroughs and around golf tees, the speed and high productivity of the ZD 1211, which has a 1.52m wide cutting deck, means that it is sometimes chosen over dedicated wide area mowers. Cut quality offered by the mulching deck is also praised.
Lottery and government funding to the sector.
“Many of these funds are still open for applications, including the Return to Play Fund and the Tackling Inequalities Fund, which is specifically aimed at organisations that can help those groups with the lowest activity levels.
“We’re also investing £10m of government funding to help schools keep sports facilities open, both during term-time and during the holidays.
“But there is much more to be done, and Covid-19 has forced a national rethink on public health.
“Our 10-year strategy Uniting the Movement illustrates how we’ll ensure that all children and adults have the opportunity to get active - now and in the future.”

A guide to battery technology for hard working professionals
Makita explains how professionals can benefit from the tool technologies that are available on the market. Kevin Brannigan, Marketing Manager at Makita looks at battery powered, cordless machines and the technology behind them.
When it comes to power tools, landscapers need to have a range of reliable, easy-to-use, powerful machines that offer them the freedom to move around site with ease. Over recent years, we have seen a significant increase in the popularity of batterypowered machines – which is no surprise, given the flexibility and improved safety these models offer. For example, with battery-powered machines users do not have to worry about the safe transportation and storage of fuel and are not exposed to harmful emissions.
The leading battery-powered, cordless machines currently on the market are powered by lithium-ion batteries. This is a huge benefit to users as lithiumion batteries can hold high levels of energy and will work for long periods of time without needing to be charged. As such, on-site productivity is increased as professionals don’t have to down tools as often.
What’s more, lithium-ion batteries can be charged at any time as they don’t need to be drained down completely beforehand – so professionals can always ensure their batteries are charged before starting work.
Makita has further refined its technology to optimise the charging process, to reduce charge times and protect the batteries from damage. Its CXT, LXT and XGT batteries are able to communicate with the charger via a central processing unit built into the battery charger.
This enables the charger to analyse the condition of the battery and identify any issues with it, including overload, over discharge or overheating. The charger can then rectify any issues – such as cooling the battery before charging takes place. This makes the process faster and ensures CXT, LXT and XGT products benefit from industry leading charge times.
For example, Makita’s 2.0Ah 12V CXT batteries and 3.0Ah 18V LXT lithium-ion batteries can be charged in as little as 22 minutes, and even the high capacity 6.0Ah batteries can be charged in less than an hour. In addition, a 2.5Ah 40VMax XGT battery can be charged in just 28 minutes and a 4.0Ah battery in 45 minutes. Fast charging maximises user productivity as jobs can be completed quickly and downtime is reduced.
Makita’s battery platforms LXT
Makita’s LXT 18V platform comprises over 270 cordless products – including garden machinery equipment, construction tools for hard landscaping and on-site accessories including radios, heated jackets and coffee makers. Professionals can choose between 18V and Twin 18V machines, depending on the task and output required. Twin 18V LXT models are powered by two 18V LXT batteries in series, that work together to power the 36V DC motor – which delivers more power and run time without users having to leave the LXT platform. Makita also offer a twin-port charger so operators can charge two batteries at the same time for even greater efficiency.
With a large array of LXT models to choose from, professionals can effortlessly switch between tools and tasks and maximise their efficiency.
XGT
The 40VMax XGT range of power tools is the highest power cordless solution currently on offer from Makita – designed to deliver the high power, durability
and efficiency needed to tackle high-demand applications with ease. The range includes 40VMax hedge trimmers, linetrimmers and brush cutters as well as 40VMax blower.
XGT batteries have been engineered with durable design features to minimise damage and withstand tough environments. For example, the heavy-duty outer casing and cell holder and shock absorbing housing protect the battery if dropped. Each battery also has an IPX4 rating, which means that it is splash and shower proof, and water ingress is limited which is ideal for those working outside in the unpredictable British weather. Their design also prevents damage from dust.
XGT batteries also include high rigidity rails, that firmly hold the battery to the tool –making them suitable for use with high power products and heavy-duty applications.
Makita also recently launched its first Twin 40VMax (80VMax) power tools to offer users even more power and a wider selection of models to suit professional use.
CXT
Makita’s Compact Extreme Technology (CXT) has been designed to power smaller, lightweight machines that are ideally suited to lower-demand applications, as well as being perfect for use in confined spaces. The CXT range comprises both 2.0Ah and 4.0Ah batteries that are similar in design to the 18V LXT
range so that they fit easily into tools and chargers and offer the structural strength needed for regular use.
Backpack batteries
Ideal for landscapers, Makita also offers a selection of backpack batteries that can be easily connected to a selection of Makita cordless machines to deliver longer run times and ensure professionals can cover larger areas without needing to down tools and re-charge batteries.
For example, the PDC1200 is compatible with Twin 18V LXT and 40VMax XGT machines and features built-in battery cells and at 33Ah capacity the PDC1200 offers excellent runtime.
Alternatively, the PDC01 backpack battery utilises 18v LXT
batteries where the unit can hold up to four 18V LXT batteries and is compatible with both 18V and Twin 18V LXT machines. The PDC01 will either use each 18V battery in series (1 to 4), or 2+2 in series when powering twin 18V machines. Both the PDC1200 and PDC01 can be comfortably carried using the backpack harness, minimising user fatigue.
With Makita, professionals have access to a wide range of machines, making it easy to find a tool suited to every job. This means that landscapers can make sure that they are using the right tool for the task and maximise their productivity and on-site efficiency.

No barriers to investment in ESPLXIVM irrigation controller
Rain Bird’s ESP- LXIVM two wire irrigation controller with smart valve technology features a Solenoid module (IVM-SOL) that remains in continuous two way proactive contact with the controller.
This provides real-time, highly efficient irrigation with immediate diagnostic feedback to identify problems quickly, simplify troubleshooting, automatically restart irrigation without manual intervention and shut off valves to avoid leaks in the event of power failure.
The availability of this unique solenoid technology, now at a highly competitive price thanks to manufacturing efficiencies, means that those involved in landscape and sports turf irrigation management can invest without compromise in Rain Bird’s most advanced best in class controller that offers significant advantages over other controllers in terms of stations, programming and diagnostics.
The overall capability of ESPLXIVM is reflected in the 240 station capability of the large scale Pro version, comparing favourably with many other
controllers that are limited to a 200 stations or less and with significantly lower programming capacity. Up to 40 irrigation programs can be set, with each program offering up to 8 start times per day across 10 flow zones, making it an ideal solution for sports grounds and similar installations where a range of irrigation regimes are required to provide exactly the right training surface. The low power, wireless communication with a network communication cartridge means that the ESP- LXIVM can be used with Rain Bird’s IQ4 central control browser based irrigation management system.
The controller’s IVM-SEN interface allows real-time flow sensing and management tools to be used, including Rain Bird’s FloWatch and FlowManager, to guard against high or low flow conditions. Interface with a weather sensor will also promote water conservation through a reduction in total watering times. The display panel has a simple user interface with a large backlit screen, an easy to operate programming dial and additional buttons for extra functions.
Commercial DuraPost can bring positive benefits to larger sites
Birkdale has expanded its extensive product portfolio by launching a new patented Commercial DuraPost.
Available in a range of lengths from 2.4m up to 5m, Commercial DuraPost is scalable for fencing projects up to 4m above the ground and offers an easy to install and hardwearing fencing solution.
Birkdale has launched Commercial DuraPost in response to increased demand for stronger commercial fencing, which has been demonstrated by the rise in RSJ metal sections or H section steel fence posts being used for larger commercial fences and highways.
Commercial DuraPost is a highly weather resistant fencing
solution durability tested to EN 1794-1-2018 with wind speeds of up to 90mph. It is more substantial than standard concrete or timber posts and possesses a superior strengthto-weight ratio in comparison with other metal alternatives due to being manufactured from cold rolled galvanised steel.
Crucially, it still maintains the light weight of the standard product, with a 4.0m Commercial DuraPost weighing just 27.5kg.
The pre-galvanised steel, which is cut and rolled through a specially made die to create a unique, patented H-section, permits DuraPost to deliver maximum corrosion resistance.

Support aside, there is a reason why the club has been relying on products from Mansfield Sand for so long, and Mez explained how they have been just so beneficial.
“We’ve been using MM40 (predominantly used in the
construction and maintenance of a wide range of sports surfaces) for as long as I have been here,” he said.
“We used to use it every year during the May renovation and even when we weren’t able to turn the pitch over due to lack of funding, we would still put about 50 tonnes of the MM40 over the top, followed by a verti-drain to get a bit of drainage in the pitch.

A pond fit for a Royal
Robert Patterson, Course Manager at the Royal Aberdeen Golf Club, has explained how a Kasco decorative fountain has improved the health of the water and brought a certain elegance to a picturesque pond on the course. Always striving for perfection, no stone is ever left unturned, and this was certainly the case when he decided to explore the possibility of aerating a pond in a prominent position on the course.
“The pond is mainly used for irrigation water, but we also draw water out for human consumption,” he said.
“There was nothing wrong with the water but in summer, with the sun beating down, there is always a risk of it going stagnant. I also felt that the water could, in the hotter weather, look a little bit discoloured at times.”
To avoid any such problems, Robert identified the Kasco J Series Decorative Fountains as the solution. Ranging from ¾ HP to 7.5 HP, there is a Kasco J Series Fountain perfect for any size pond or lake.

Iconic 1960’s apartment block given green facelift
Canon Green Court, a 1960s apartment block recognisable to some TV viewers by its distinctive blue façade, has seen its fair share of drama over the years, appearing in ITV’s Prey, and Channel 4’s No Offence.
Time had taken its toll over the years and the building was earmarked for essential improvement and refurbishment. As well as the communal grounds, the frontage along Blackfriars Road was improved by planting 11 Liquidambar Slender Silhouette trees, utilising a 58-metre-long trench to provide plenty of good quality shared rooting space for the trees.
Stephen Martlew Landscape Architecture specified tree
pits to incorporate Greentech’s ArborRaft system, a geo-cellular tree pit solution that enables the use of a good quality, friable, organic soil within the tree pits, as opposed to structural tree sand.
The landscape contract work was awarded to Beech Landscape (Developments) Ltd, with whom Green-tech have a 20-year working relationship.
Green-tech’s ArborRaft system is a highly rigid, yet shallow sub-base replacement, capable of supporting up to 70 tonnes per square metre. Requiring a mere 500mm wide shoulder around the edge, it acts as a raft, spanning the tree pit or trench without any plastic encroaching into the rooting zone.
Using recycled polypropylene with a 95% void ratio, it acts as an air void, bringing aeration closer to the roots.
One of ArborRaft’s key advantages over traditional deep pit crate-style systems is the 150mm shallow profile. This came into its own when the installation team discovered a plethora of Victorian pipework less than half a metre underground. Nick stated that if they had been using a crate-style
system, it would have given them a real headache and taken a lot longer to install.
Each tree within the trench was completed with Mona irrigation tanks, tree anchors, and over 120 tonnes of Green-tech’s Greentree British Standard subsoil and specially formulated ArborRaft topsoil, to give the trees the best chance of establishment.

New snow blades and spreaders for John Deere Gators
John Deere and Douglas Dynamics, the parent company of US brands Western, Fisher and SnowEx, have entered into a partnership agreement with Western Products, the leading manufacturer of snow and ice control products.
The company offers a variety of front-mounted blades plus hopper and tailgate-mounted sand and salt spreaders, along with a wide selection of performanceenhancing snow plough and spreader accessories and parts. All Western products can be installed quickly and easily on John Deere’s range of Gator utility vehicles.
There is a choice of 1.82m (72in) straight and V-blade snow plough

The Aspen alternative to new E10 pump fuel
From September 2021, regular grade unleaded petrol (95 octane) in the UK is changing. To help in the Government’s target of reducing carbon emissions, ethanol content will increase to 10% (E10) from the 5% (E5) currently available on pump.
While this is not an issue for modern petrol car engines designed to be operated with E10, users of garden and grounds machinery now face and increased risk of experiencing reliability issues attributable to the increased ethanol content.
Ethanol is a renewable bio-fuel that can be mixed with unleaded petrol in various grades and, when burnt, produces fewer emissions. It is anticipated that the switch to E10 will remove 750,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and, for those with modern machines designed to handle E10 fuel, few problems are expected during day-to-day operation.
However, ethanol is a solvent that is damaging to plastic and rubber and is the ingredient often responsible for ‘gummy deposits’ left behind once the fuel has evaporated.
The additional ethanol content therefore threatens to shorten
the service life of certain system components and contribute towards the poor running of small power equipment. In addition to issues with reliability, ethanol also reduces the storage life of petrol, through the binding of moisture which then acidifies – in turn, leading to problems for owners who use their machinery infrequently or store them for long periods of time.
Many manufacturers, including STIHL, Husqvarna and Honda recommend that fuels containing ethanol should be consumed within a 30-day period in order to minimise the risks.
Being free from ethanol as well as benzene, sulphur and many other harmful substances, Aspen Alkylate petrol offers a clean alternative for both 2 and 4-stroke engines – improving the health and performance of your equipment, the working conditions for the operator and significantly reducing the harmful impact your machinery makes on the environment.
The increase in purity compared to traditional pump petrol means Aspen can also be left in fuel tanks for many years without degrading.

GTM Professional provides woodchippers that do the job
The GTM Professional range of compact and powerful woodchippers are designed to offer a portable option to expert gardeners and professionals for chipping branches and crops – perfect for tree care, landscaping, forestry, and garden maintenance.
Efficient, effective, and safe to operate due to their chipping system and unique drum design – a rotor with 2 Pro doublesharpened blades that rotate along the counter blade at high speed and ejection through a large discharge chute.
The system pulls branches up to 12cm thick into the machine via the extra wide input chute, chips them and ejects clean cut wood chips time after time.
The adjustable deflector can throw the woodchips into a wheelbarrow, trailer or directly onto the ground.
The high-alloy steel PRO blades have two cutting edges so that they can be turned around for reuse.
The extra wide chute means that it is rarely necessary to remove side branches, which guarantees a high working speed.
Composting can create valuable resources for the garden. A compo multifunctional chipper like the new GTS1300COMPO or GTS900COMPO has two different outputs which will help create the shredded material that accelerates the composting process.
The high output is suitable for shredding branches up to 10cm which will provide the structure and ventilation to the compost.
The low output is suitable for soft material such as grasses, hedge shavings or plant debris which will provide the moisture and nutrition to the compost pile.
All the machines are extensively tested for safety and ease of use and meet the highest safety standards. Safety features on the woodchippers include a safety switch to immediately stop the motor, panic bar and rotor locking system.
The machines are light and perfectly balanced so that one person can operate and move the machine safely. The GTM dealer network can help with expert advice, maintenance and spare parts which guarantee a long life.

Investment in grassroots and community sport integral to Team GB legacy
in some facilities remaining closed after the pandemic and in need of costly repairs.
The legacy of Team GB’s success during this summer’s Tokyo Olympics risks being lost without further investment in grassroots and community sport facilities, the Local Government Association says.
Councils provide the majority of public swimming pools and leisure facilities. However, they are expensive to build and maintain and with increased pressures to
divert funding from sports to fund statutory services such as adult social care and children’s services. The pandemic has also resulted in many leisure facilities facing additional financial pressures.
The LGA, which represents councils across England and Wales, said 63 per cent of main sports halls and 60 per cent of swimming pools are past their expected lifespans or overdue refurbishment, resulting
Sport England has provided effective support and investment in infrastructure, but their funds are oversubscribed, so the LGA is calling for the Government to provide an urgent second round of National Leisure Recovery Funding, worth £700 million , to enable facilities to remain open and continue playing a vital role in supporting the health of the nation and nurturing the ambition of young people in elite sports.
Longer-term capital investment through the upcoming Spending Review will also be needed to refurbish the estate, bring them up to environmental standards and ensure services are protected in the future.
Investment in sport and leisure facilities, from financial support, to strategic partnership working between central and local government and community organisations is essential in increasing the development of young people, preparing them with vital life skills and healthy habits.
Cllr Gerald Vernon-Jackson, Chair of the LGA’s Culture, Tourism and Sport Board, said: “The country is hugely proud of the tremendous achievements by our athletes at the Tokyo Olympics. Their success could lead to a legacy of inspiring young people to take up sport and healthy lifestyle habits.
“We must take action now if we want to ensure this success is repeated in the future, and that young people from all
backgrounds can aspire to compete in future Games.
“Local leisure facilities play a vital role in ensuring our communities can get healthy and active, but they are also the starting point in discovering bright new sporting talent, that can go on to represent Team GB on the world stage.
“Council funded facilities also offer people from all backgrounds the chance to access a range of free or lowcost activities in a safe and supported environment, which is vital in enabling residents living in deprived areas to be active and to level up opportunities across the country.”

Streamlined TYM Range from Reesink
Reesink Turfcare introduces the new generation of TYM tractors in a streamlined range with new engines and a new look, following market feedback and TYM’s own rebranding.
Reesink is now comprised of four customer favourites, including subcompact and compact models, and offers a wide range of solutions for the UK’s sports venues and golf courses, contractors, landscapers and equestrian customers.
In response to EU’s emission regulations, three of these models – the T255, T395 and T555 –come with a Stage V compliant diesel engine, which limits the amount of particulate matter produced in an effort to reduce air pollution.
Steven Haynes, tractor sales manager at Reesink, says: “TYM went through a major overhaul at the end of 2020 to prepare for the next 70 years, showing its commitment to investing in engineering that drives performance, and the result is a customer-focused redesign that provides versatility and value.
“At Reesink we went through a similar process of listening to our customers and streamlining our offering into four favourites. There’s a horsepower option suitable for all fine turf and sports requirements and attachments available from Reesink to ensure all jobs are catered for.”
Steve continues: “There are some clever features to the range. The T255, for example, is Stage V
compliant but avoids the need for expensive exhaust treatments such as a DPF filter, keeping costs down for the customer. It’s also now able to synchronise the HST pedals with the engine throttle for much simpler, and less tiring, operation. Plus, following customer feedback, it now comes with one set of spool valves as standard, rather than as an optional accessory.
“The T555 produces more power than its predecessor while still maximising on fuel efficiency, while the updated panel has a new digital element that shows the tractor hours, fuel gauge and information on the engine and emission system make for muchimproved user control.”

No weed out of reach with the Campey AIR Trolly Pack
Campey Turf Care Systems latest innovation, the AIR Trolly Pack from Dutch manufacturer WeedControl BV brings the hardest to access weeds into reach.
The Honda GX120 motor with compressor powers the LPG/propane 3x15kw hot-air burner head with an adjustable operating temperature between 190°C – 290°C.
The small footprint of the trolley and burner means it can easily access hard to reach areas such
as around poles, along walls and road edges, under street furniture and in narrow street passages and alleys where weeds consistently grow. The AIR Trolly Pack is also ideal for inner-city areas and the after-treatment of larger weed removal projects.
Flame weeding is a very effective and environmentally friendly way to remove weeds against alternative methods such as potentially harmful herbicides. Most annual and some perennial weeds can be eradicated using a flame that essentially explodes
the weeds’ cells, turning them into ash. This ash then mixes with the soil or disperses with no harm to other plants while there is no risk of drift onto other areas, which can be common with chemical applications.
WeedControl has explored all health and safety concerns associated with working with a fl ame during the development of the product. Special attention was paid to the ease of operation to ensure that any user can safely and easily operate the machine. All WeedControl
products are made to meet legal requirements when working in public and private areas and impact the environment as little as possible with a focus on sustainability.
The AIR Trolly Pack can be optionally supplied with a hotair bin at the front side. This is equipped with a 3x15kW hot-air burner head. For this, the AIR Trolly Pack is modified at the front side for stability.

Top tips on tackling leatherjackets as we head into the key treatment period Foamstream helps keep streets clean
Weedingtech’s Foamstream system is helping street and public open spaces cleansing in Cornwall with two Foamstream M1200 systems now being operated in the county.
Foamstream is known to be the most cost-effective and versatile herbicide-free solution for controlling unwanted vegetation and carrying out sanitisation tasks in large green and urban spaces.
Its patented low-pressure process combines hot water and biodegradable foam made from natural plant oils and sugars.
The active ingredient is the heat from the hot water which the foam insulates to ensure it is maintained and kills or severely damages the unwanted vegetation including weeds, moss and algae.
While primarily founded on weed control, Foamstream is also designed for power washing, general sanitisation and chewing gum removal.
It is certified organic by the British Soil Association and approved for killing bacteria. As such, it is highly effective for sanitising surfaces and urban cleaning. Optional lances are used in the process, and the eco-friendly system is safe for use around people, animals and delicate environments.
Use of the Foamstream M1200 system ensures minimum environmental impact on Cornwall’s street and public open space weed control and cleansing. The M1200 combines high performance with low-cost operation and fast treatment speed.
Mounted on a pickup, flatbed truck or trailer, it comes with a large water capacity and delivers a high flow rate, making it particularly well suited to treating large open areas in urban and rural environments.
Weedingtech Enquiry 47
The combination of wet and dry weather spells we have experienced this year, provide ideal conditions for leatherjackets which typically survive in moist soils above 12oC. Typically pupating from August onwards, greenkeepers should be prepared to control them three to four weeks after sightings drop off.
Colin Mumford, technical support manager at Bayer, notes that leatherjackets can be a challenge to identify. “Following mild weather, localised die back of the turf tissue will indicate that they’re active, but when it’s wet it can be hard to see signs of activity and often secondary damage from birds is the first indicator you see.”
He adds that it is important to actively look for crane flies from the spring right through to late autumn to ensure optimum treatment timings.
“There are two main species of crane fly that we find on managed turf in the UK. The European crane fly which is active from August to late October, only reproduces once a year; and the Common crane fly, which can have up to three generations in the same year.”
Given these lifecycles, and the identification challenges, Colin gives his top tips on how to successfully control leatherjackets.
How to control leatherjackets When it comes to controlling leatherjackets, it is important to think outside the box, as there are limited controls available and ironically, they are more attracted to healthy turf.
“Chemical controls are extremely restricted due to changes in legislation, but there are alternative methods out there which offer successful control.
“In particular, nematodes offer a great alternative to chemical controls. Being totally biological, they aren’t subject to the regulatory processes that synthetic pesticides have to meet but are still registered with the relevant authorities in each country,” says Colin.
He explains that nematodes work by entering the leatherjackets and releasing a bacterium which causes paralysis and ultimately kills the pest.
“It’s a symbiotic relationship between the nematodes and the bacterium. The nematodes are the transport mechanism for the bacterium, and the bacterium creates the conditions the nematode requires to complete its lifecycle. The nematode’s offspring then feed on the leatherjacket cadaver and once they have used up all the resources from the cadaver, they eat their way out of it, moving on to find another host to complete their lifecycle.”
He says that Bayer’s Harmonix® Tri-Nema nematodes, are a unique solution which contains three different species of entomopathogenic nematodes.
“Each species has a different role, making them more aggressive, as the different species try to outcompete each other to become dominant.”
Using nematode controls correctly To get the most out of using nematodes it is important to use them correctly, however this is not difficult as there are clear instructions to follow.
“Firstly, when receiving your nematodes make sure you store them correctly. Take the packets out of the box and keep them in the fridge between 4-8oC. Don’t stack them, as they can get squashed.”
Next Colin explains that monitoring and application timings must be right to achieve successful control of the pest.
“Monitor adult crane fly populations visually or with pheromone traps and apply the nematodes to the turf three to four weeks after you start to see a drop in adult numbers. This will enable the nematodes to target the leatherjackets in the soil when they’re young and vulnerable. When it’s time to apply the nematodes, pick an overcast day but when soil temperatures are above 12oC, it’s important to note that direct sunlight will kill them, and cold weather will limit their activity,” says Colin.
He adds that the area of application should be irrigated the day before, to ensure there is adequate moisture for the nematodes and it will help them move through the rootzone.
Nematodes are applied in liquid form. “Before filling the sprayer, remove all the nozzle filters, even the one in the lance if using a knapsack sprayer, as this can cause blockages. Also, wash the nematode packet out as they will stick to the sides,” he advises.
Colin says, use whole packets where possible so you get the right mix of the different nematode species. One pack of Harmonix ® Tri-Nema will cover 1,000m 2 , which is enough to cover two average sized golf greens.
“Finally, within 30 minutes of applying the nematodes, turn on the irrigation briefly to lightly wash any nematodes remaining on the turfgrass leaves into the rootzone.
“A popular myth is that nematodes are difficult to apply, but in reality, it’s simple – just follow the instructions and you will achieve successful control,” concludes Colin.

Ian has managed the Tyne & Wear area for almost 20years. He holds a BASIS certificate in crop protection and is a certificated surveyor in Japanese Knotweed. It is safe to say he knows his weeds and how to treat them.
“I have used Roundup as a brand for the whole of my career,” he said. “In particular, I have relied on ProVantage for the last three years. I choose this over other brands and products purely because I get such good results.”
As Ian says, Roundup ProVantage - a glyphosatebased herbicide, sets the standards in weed control and is renowned for its top performance.
The optimised blend of surfactants as well as the high loading makes Roundup ProVantage the most advanced amenity glyphosate on the market.
Roundup ProVantage offers superior performance – with improved rain-fastness and speed of uptake. Rainfast in just one hour for annuals, this product reduces the risk of run off and ensures the maximum amount of glyphosate reaches the roots for the optimum effectiveness.
The effectiveness of Roundup ProVantage herbicide, and its favourable environmental
characteristics, have combined to make it one of the most widely used and trusted herbicides in the world.
“I tend to use it on a variety of sites such as highways, central reservations, verges, pavements and industrial sites,” continued Ian.
“Depending on the site and the severity, I would normally look to apply it two or three times with a period of six to eight weeks between each application.
“This year I am intending to use ProVantage as a convenience tank mix with ICL’s LockStar, this will offer me both knockdown and longterm residual control.
“Throughout the summer we see great results within just a week, but it is also effective in cooler weather” This year, for example, I did a job in February when the temperatures were still very low, and within 3 weeks the Roundup ProVantage had achieved a total kill.
“Another huge benefit of ProVantage is that it is a 480 concentration instead of 360 so there are 25% less packaging materials to dispose of. For me that is a big selling point.
“We will continue to use and promote the use of Roundup ProVantage as it is a premium product and I’m very happy with the results” Ian concludes Roundup ProVantage is distributed in the UK by ICL.
Headland’s New-Way Weedspray for hard surface moss control
Headland Amenity’s New-Way Weedspray is a fast-acting, nonselective herbicide, active against most soft plant tissue it comes into contact with - including grasses, broad-leaved weeds and mosses.
Used on hard surfaces or even synthetic grass, depending on weather conditions, the product produces discolouration and browning of the foliage within just a few hours of treatment.
New-Way Weedspray (MAPP No. 15319), is a non-selective herbicide based on naturally occurring ingredients. The active ingredient - acetic acid (vinegar) - has been formulated from the highest food-grade product and developed with a naturally occurring protein ingredient.
This combination doubles the herbicidal properties of acetic acid compared to standard
products. Perennial weeds generally require more than a single application for control, but annual weeds are usually controlled with only the one. In warm, sunny weather, most weeds will die within 1 to 2 days.
New-Way Weedspray is the only registered herbicide approved for the control of moss on hard surfaces in the UK.
Its versatility means it can be used to control weed growth in amenity situations such as footpaths and pavements, parks, and in industrial areas such as railways, industrial sites and fence lines etc. Unlike other moss killers, New-Way Weedspray will also control weeds and grass as well, negating the need for separate applications.
The product is not translocated within the plant and therefore is
safer to use around trees, shrubs and other valuable plants. Also, as there are no residual effects with the product in the soil, new sowing and planting may be
undertaken as soon as the weeds have died.

ACO responds to home rennovation boom with launch of GravelGuard
With the UK experiencing a home and landscaping renovation boom, ACO Water Management has launched its easy-to-install gravel stabilising ground reinforcement system, GravelGuard.
Stabilisation systems play an important role in projects that incorporate gravel, addressing issues such as gravel drifting and rutting, through to membrane moving and water ponding on nonporous surfaces. ACO’s new GravelGuard includes features that combat these problems, as well as speeding up installation
and reducing maintenance for years to come.
Manufactured from 100% polypropylene, it is designed to facilitate unimpeded drainage of surface water, while simultaneously ensuring gravel stability for pedestrian and vehicle access. It is suited to a range of applications, including driveways, garden paths, public spaces, and roof surfaces.
One of the defining features of GravelGuard is the incorporated geo-textile membrane, which helps to reduce weed growth, and
crucially speeds up installation by not requiring the installation of two separate layers of membrane and grid.
This integrated filter fleece can be easily cut to fit irregular
edging, saving project time in what is likely to prove a busy summer for builders and landscapers.

Rescue and renovate with the Redexim Extreme Clean
In the last couple of years, where play and maintenance activities have likely been far from regular, it may be that artificial playing surfaces are now showing the signs of the reduced surface agitation as we head towards the winter months.
Tell-tale issues such as water pooling and contamination may be more prevalent this year if brushing regimes have not been conducted as frequently as normal.
If this is the case then, when time and conditions allow, the surface will benefit from a deep renovation with the Redexim Extreme Clean to remove debris and alleviate compaction.
The Extreme Clean is a horizontal rotary unit designed to breathe new life into compacted carpets or target specific neglected areas. The stiff bristles of the rotating brushes ‘scrub’ the surface to loosen infill, lift flattened
fibres and remove debris and contaminants.
Available in either 120cm or 180cm working widths, the Extreme Clean is adjusted on four threaded spindles allowing the brush head depth and pressure to be set accurately depending on the aggressiveness of clean required.
This machine is particularly effective on sand-dressed surfaces, making it a popular choice for the regeneration of tennis courts, football and hockey surfaces. By loosening hardened and/or compacted infill materials, the Extreme Clean will help to restore both the aesthetic and physical play characteristics of a carpet – improving drainage, player safety and ball roll/bounce, and reducing the likelihood of more serious and costly surface repairs being required further down the line.

School invests in a GKB Rotobrush
Home to full sized Astroturf, grass cricket wicket, a nine-hole golf course and an all-weather wicket, there was no better match than the GKB Rotobrush for Witham Hall Preparatory School.
Alex Exton, Groundsman at Witham Hall Preparatory School explains that the GKB Rotobrush perfectly fits their needs. “It is a compact and efficient machine that it is perfect for what I wanted it for.
“This machine was affordable to which was a big appeal. It’s rare you can get such an impressive machine for such a great price.”
As your synthetic sport pitches get used, dirt becomes apparent. From moss and algae to general wear and tear, this ultimately can affect the technical characteristics and authentic appearance of the turf. The GKB Rotobrush
restores this by tackling persistent contamination. Alex explains, “We use our GKB Rotorbrush to clean our Astro. Due to the size of our grounds it can take a while however this machine is the best of the best!”
The GKB Rotobrush enables you to brush deeper and more effectively where needed. Thanks to the rotating brush disc that is provided with extra rigid bristles, your artificial pitch maintenance can be taken to the next level.
When the functioning of normal brushing and cleaning stops, the GKB Rotobrush continues. Alex Exton said “The GKB Rotobrush gets so close to the edges of the Astroturf, especially where the carpet meets the fence kickboard and also on the artificial for the cricket.”

Brush-Pro keeps it clean at football club
After a new synthetic pitch quickly turned fortunes around for Worksop Town Football Club, the club’s attentions soon turned to the maintenance of their new pitch. Life president and groundsman Keith Ilett explains why they chose the SISIS Brush-Pro.
With a tremendous amount of usage building on the pitch, Keith required a machine to keep the surface at the highest possible standard, and this led him to the SISIS Brush-Pro.
It is a very common misconception that synthetic surfaces require very little attention but just like natural turf, they require maintenance as soon as they are constructed if they are to perform to the standard expected of them. Regular and periodic upkeep is required because it ensures a safe playing environment, retains the performance characteristics as well as prolonging the longevity of the surface.
The SISIS Brush-Pro is a ride-on brushing system comprising a pair of mid mounted oscillating units and three rear mounted brush units that that have been specifically designed for maintaining synthetic surfaces.
Brushing synthetic surfaces is essential to keep infill mobile, lift the pile and prevent algae accumulation, surface compaction and loss of porosity.
The Brush-Pro has been designed for maximum manoeuvrability and operator comfort with features such as an electric start, hydrostatic drive for forward/reverse and its brush combinations - oscillating for thorough periodic work and rear mounted brushes for routine frequent work which cause less compaction than conventional drag brushes.

Autumn maintenance made easy with AgriMetal
As the leaves start to fall, maintenance work increases significantly, but it’s work that can be made easy with the three low decibel three-point linkage mounted leaf and debris blowers and two high capacity collectors from AgriMetal.
The range available from Reesink Agriculture is recognised for its safe, efficient and reliable performance for sports, grounds and other turf customers.
The blowers are all tractor mounted. The BW2500 requires a 25hp at the PTO, B35 a 35hp and B50, 45hp respectively.
The B35 and B50 have an impellor made out of special composites rather than steel which, because of its weight, requires less energy at full throttle, delivering a quieter, smoother and vibration free operation whilst also increasing airflow CFM by around 25 percent compared to other products on the market.
This will have sure-fire appeal to golf courses and urban sports ground, for example, where it is important to keep noise pollution to a minimum.
The lightweight construction reduces the sudden loading on the driveline and helps reduce belt wear as the PTO is engaged.
The large roller on which the blower rides lets you work in the worst conditions without marking or compacting the turf, particularly useful for sports surfaces, especially on turns. In fact, in contrast to the competition, the roller will often smooth out imperfections on the turf.
This low decibel series of tractor-drawn blowers has been designed for maximum productivity and minimum maintenance and are a worthy addition to any golf course, sports ground, paddock and orchard and the option to fit caster wheels, which allows the machine to switch to hard
surface application, makes them a good option for public schools, colleges, universities and large estates for driveway clearing too.
Joining the blowers are two collectors, the Tuff Vac and Multi Vac. The Tuff Vac comes in two variants, PTO driven for use with a a 35hp+ tractor, or with its own 27hp engine allowing it to be towed by a smaller tractor or larger utility vehicle. The Multi Vac is pulled and powered by any 50hp or higher tractor.
The Tuff Vac delivers a simple but effective proposition in either version. A hydraulic counter rotating brush or rubber ‘finger’ rotor provides superior performance on hard to pick up materials such as straw.
The fact that this can be changed to a nylon bristle brush for hard surfaces and the addition of a wander hose kit for awkward areas means it’s a versatile little number.
Plus there’s a whopping 50 percent more exhaust area than some competitive models means more vacuum and less clogging.
Meanwhile, the Multi Vac has a large format design, greater holding capacity and a new brush system that is second to none in sweeping leaves and branch debris.
The impeller RPM is reduced for a quieter operating level, reducing noise pollution, and two rotary blades turn at high speed to shred leaves and branches.
A third rotary blade is located inside the pick-up head throat to preventing clogging. This exclusive internal shredder greatly increases the volume of debris that is packed into the hopper and prevents dust to deliver a cleaner job.

Top-Brush leaves tip-top finish
At Windlesham Golf Club in Surrey, brushing is becoming a regular, year-round operation following the purchase of a Redexim Top-Brush in December 2020.
Bought initially to aid the dispersal of worm casts, Assistant Course Manager Graeme Roberts has also discovered the benefits the Top-Brush can bring to course presentation and moisture removal – playing a core role in maintaining plant health.
Nestled in the Surrey countryside, Windlesham offers a championship parkland golf course shaped and maintained by Course Manager Leigh Powell, Graeme and the team of 9, that provides a test to golfers of all abilities.
“Because of the heavy soil profile of the course, and the ongoing reduction in chemicals, it became apparent that we needed to find a solution to the issues we were experiencing with worm casts over the autumn and winter months” explains Graeme.
“We had the Top-Brush in on demonstration for a week and were so impressed that we bought the demo unit from our dealer, Lister Wilder.”
“The Top-Brush gives us a sustainable way to stay on top of casts, and at 6m wide it is quick and effective at covering the fairways, leaving a high-
quality finish while staying ahead of the golf.”
“When worm cast season died down, the Top-Brush was then utilised twice weekly for brushing ahead of the mowers – to remove dew and dry the plant out, improving the quality of cut and reducing the clumping of clippings.
“The fact that the brushes can change rotational direction is really handy.
“We tend to run them in the opposite direction of travel to stand the plant up more effectively but if we’re working on smaller areas, we can simply change the brush direction as we move backwards and forwards.”
As well as changing brush direction, working depth can also be adjusted, making the Top-Brush a versatile tool for a light surface brush –suitable for clearing dew, incorporating topdressing material or removing clippings - or a deeper, more aggressive surface agitation to effectively rid large areas of organic matter.
“We’ve been really pleased with how it has been removing dead material and debris from the sward, thereby helping to improve the plants growing environment without having to use more invasive and timeconsuming techniques.”

Wiedenmann’s Super 500 & 600 sweeper collectors are big on H&S
Wiedenmann UK’s ‘Go Big’ Super 500 & Super 600 sweeper collectors are great in tough situations.
Billed as 4-in-1 machines, they sweep leaves, flail mow, fraise mow, scarify and collect depending on which implements are employed.
Frequently, estates managers say their Super 500 or 600s remain attached to tractors from autumn to springtime, literally in use every day, even working in freezing temperatures.
An airflow path ensures the 2,500 litre or 4,500 litre hoppers are tightly packed with leaves, grass or other debris, minimising the number of times they need to be emptied.
The container lifts via a parallel system to a height of 2.1 m while rotating the hopper to completely discharge collected material. The high dump facility means
they can work with all sorts of trailers, maximising productivity and saving time and fuel with far fewer journeys.
The class leading H & S features on the Wiedenmann are also noteworthy, beginning with its floating head which follows contours and allows sweeping without changing implements. The parallelogram guided suspension helps the operator find an optimal working position.
The fully floating head allows for ideal ground adaptation so takes uneven ground in its stride. Next, flotation tyres with a large contact area and low ground pressure, protect the surface together with a pair of anti-scalp rollers. An ecofriendly chute, guides dust toward the ground, reducing dust to the operator and the surrounding area.
For golf courses there is an optional kit which fits to the front roller and replaces two tyres, enabling the
multi-function head to follow the contours even more accurately.
A super contour kit assists those with deep ridges and furrows. An additional back roller with additional anti scalp rollers fits inside the rotor drum brings the
anti- scalp wheels even closer to the centre of the rotor drum. Finally, you can opt to have all hydraulic functions operated by electric controls from the tractor seat.
Trilo S3 takes command of leaf clearance
The 18 holes at Hertfordshire’s prestigious Centurion Club explore pine-lined fairways and woodland that pose a challenge to players and greenkeepers alike.
One of the biggest problems for Course Manager Andy Garland and his team was, as the parkland course matured, so did the task of autumn leaf-clearance.
That was until the club purchased a Trilo S3 vacuum sweeper from Vanmac two years ago, which has since been described as ‘fundamental’ in retaining the presentation, playability and health of the course.
“Having heard good things, we had a demonstration of the S3, fitted with the brush shaft, and it was evident straight away how it was going to absolutely transform the task for us,” he said.
Working at a convenient 1.5m wide, the Trilo S3 weighs in at only 1200kg making it suitable for compact tractors of 35HP+.
The full-floating brush head and low ground pressure, allows the machine to work under the heaviest of conditions, with hardto-reach areas - in and around trees for example - cleared with convenience and ease thanks to the 6m wander hose.
To convert the S3 into a yearround tool, Andy also has his sights set on the optional Verticut shaft which can be mounted to the unit in a matter of minutes, converting it into a quick and effective method of scarifying large areas such as the fairways.

Hayter Ltd to change name to Toro U.K. Limited Multigreen magic for Cornish contractors
Sports turf contractors W R Sandow have come to swear by Multigreen temperaturecontrolled release fertiliser from Headland Amenity, to satisfy the nutritional requirements of more than 60 winter sport pitches.
The introduction of feeding programmes is a relatively recent addition to the list of services offered by the Cornish contractors, but in a short space of time the consistency of results and superior technical support from the Headland team has really impressed Director Andrew Sandow.
“Until recently, we would go in and do the mechanical maintenance and leave clubs to apply product themselves, but you’d often find that due to time or financial constraints, this wasn’t being done” explains Andrew. “After many discussions and support from the Pitch Advisory Service at The GMA, we began advocating
fertiliser programmes based around Headland’s Multigreen.”
Multigreen features urea or potassium nitrate prills within a permeable polymer-resin coating which only start to release their solubilised nutrients once soil temperatures rise above 6ocin line with the requirements of
the grass. Nutrient availability is gentle and controlled by temperature alone, avoiding ‘flush’ growth and producing a strong, healthy sward that is sustained for up to six months depending on the analysis.

Hayter Ltd, which is part of The Toro Company, has changed its name to Toro U.K. Limited.
The name change to Toro U.K. Limited will align the UK operation with the rest of Toro’s subsidiaries outside of the United States, and the strategic focus to grow the Toro brand in the consumer, light construction, landscape contractor and arboricultural markets.
Toro U.K. Limited remains committed to the Hayter brand, which this year celebrates its 75th anniversary. The brand will continue to be a significant part of the Toro U.K. Limited portfolio with manufacturing and selling of the Hayter range of premium quality lawn care products continuing from its Spellbrook factory in the UK.
The Hayter brand will retain the Royal Warrant, with which it has been proudly associated since the 1960s and Toro U.K. Limited
will continue to invest and develop new Hayter products, including the new 60v Hawk range, which comes to market this autumn.
Craig Hoare, Sales and Marketing Manager Toro U.K. Limited commented, “The change is in
name only and everything else is business as usual. The new name will help us to layout our strategy for the Toro & Hayter brands in the UK market and grow with our existing retailers.”
