HLF and Big Lottery Fund give £34m to parks’ regeneration
The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and Big Lottery Fund has announced that they are investing £34 million in what they describe as ‘some of the UK’s most precious, yet tired green spaces’.
The money will, the HLF says, transform these sites, some of which are in the country’s most deprived communities.
Disused historic buildings will be restored and used as new cafes or public facilities, helping to attract more people and therefore more income.
Innovations include public wi-fi installed in Peel Park, Salford and plans to harness renewable energy from the mill pond at Victoria Park, Stafford.
HLF’s chair, Sir Peter Luff, said on behalf of HLF and the Big Lottery Fund: “We all benefit from spending time outside in the fresh air, so it’s vital that we look after our green spaces, particularly in dense urban areas.
“National Lottery players’ money will give a boost to each of these 16 historic places, helping make sure they have a great future.”
The projects include Great Yarmouth’s Venetian-inspired water gardens constructed as part of an unemployment relief programme after World War I; Belfast City Cemetery – the final resting place of some of Belfast’s industrial giants, including an underground
wall originally built to divide Protestants and Catholics and a ‘poor ground’ where 63,000 people are buried in unmarked graves; and Winckley Square Gardens, Preston – one of Northern England’s finest Georgian squares – with notable residents including suffragette Edith Rigby and seven-times Mayor Nicholas Grimshaw.
Stoke-on-Trent’s Hanley Park – one of the biggest Victorian public parks in the UK, built for local potters and miners to relax and play sports – is also included in the list.

Welcome...
It is always useful to see how other industries are faring, sometimes we can gain valuable insights and learn important lessons.
The construction industry is experiencing something of a boom at the moment, boosted by a succession of Government policies aimed at encouraging housebuilding in particular. However, despite this apparent success, senior figures within the industry are claiming it remains in crisis and one significant barrier remains to securing a brighter future – a major skills gap. Indeed, there is mounting concern and frustration that Ministers are failing to listen to the industry about the needs to tackle the skills and training issues as an urgent priority.
It is timely, therefore, that Lantra has released details of a major survey of employers in the arboriculture, forestry, horticulture and landscape industries to comment on the new apprenticeship standards developed under the ‘Trailblazer’ programme. Such consultation is vitally important to the long-term future of our industry and is refreshing to see when compared to the on-going concerns within construction.
Of course, the Lantra survey does not indicate that everything in our industry’s garden is rosy (excuse the pun). We are facing our set of issues and challenges. But this dialogue is significant and it is important. The future of the industry rests with the future workforce. So getting training and education right is crucial and listening to the views of employers is essential.
We all have a part to play in ensuring that the next generation are properly equipped with the skills and knowledge they will need to take our industry forward into a prosperous future.
This month, we have a special spotlight on hedge and verge mowing with Jane Carley compiling a comprehensive round-up of the market at present. There is also a special Play & Activity Today supplement focussing on the latest news, views, case studies and product launches from the play sector. We also take a look at hand-held tools, a review of what is happening in the urban environment and also have our usual news and product information.

Employers pave the way to the next generation of apprenticeships
Employers in the arboriculture, forestry, horticulture and landscape industries have taken part in a survey to comment on the new apprenticeship standards developed under the ‘Trailblazer’ programme.
Trailblazers were developed as a result of a 2012 Government review which found that there were key areas of the apprenticeship programme where substantial improvements could be made.
Representatives from industry, led by Bartlett Tree Experts, developed the standards which list the key competencies, skills, knowledge and behaviours required by apprentices in the following occupations: Arborist; Forest Operative; Horticulture/Landscape Operative; and Horticulture/ Landscape Supervisor.
These standards went out to consultation in May and responses were extremely encouraging, with 293 completed surveys being returned across all four standards. Collectively, the respondents employ tens of thousands of employees and hundreds of apprentices, so gathering their feedback was critical in order to ensure the standards are fit for purpose.
Businesses from the full spectrum of the industries, from multinationals to micro-enterprises, commented on the standards, reflecting the nature of our sector. The industry representatives looked at all comments provided and were hugely impressed by how many detailed and constructive thoughts they have received.
Standards are currently being modified and improved to reflect respondent feedback and will be submitted for ministerial approval in late August.
Those leading this initiative would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped spread the message about the consultation and those who took the time to respond.
The next stage of the process is writing assessment plans for each occupation. This is employers’ opportunity to explain how to test that the apprentice has reached full competence.
The assessment plans are due to be completed before the end of the year with training and assessment providers invited to an event in September to comment on the draft plans.

Wetting agent technology to aid pitch turf management
Sports stadia turf managers should be looking at new wetting agent technology to enhance performance of sand-based pitch constructions.
Syngenta Business Manager, Daniel Lightfoot, highlighted that the increasing number of reinforced pitches, along with new renovation techniques and pitch construction designs utilising a higher proportion of sand to improve drainage, could lead to more issues of hydrophobic dry patch and inconsistent water movement.
Extended playing seasons, multi-sport use of stadia and changing weather patterns, with an increasing tendency for short periods of very intense rainfall, put further challenges on pitch management.
Innovative Qualibra wetting agent technology could help move water down from the surface consistently, and then hold it deeper and more evenly in the root zone.
The result is to ensure turf roots have the optimum conditions for the uptake of nutrients and irrigation water to maintain plant health. These conditions also encourage the development of a greater root mass, he added.
Qualibra contains a unique combination of penetrant surfactant to move water down from the surface, in conjunction with co-block polymers that hold water deeper and evenly in the soil profile.
Studies have shown that where Qualibra has alleviated the
effects of hydrophobicity of sand, it continues to bind onto more water deep in the profile. That gives plants the chance to make better use of applied irrigation and fertiliser.
Research has shown that up to 50% of applied nutrient could be lost from sand-based construction pitches.
Qualibra is typically applied at four-week intervals from March through to October for summer stress and water management, with further trials to evaluate use through the winter on sports turf pitches to aid water movement and surface quality.
Tackle Giant Hogweed problem with Roundup
Local authorities under pressure from residents concerned about recent reports of injuries caused by Giant Hogweed can rely on Roundup ProVantage and Roundup ProBio for effective control, says Monsanto.
“The stems and leaves of this invasive weed are covered with small hairs coated with poisonous sap,” explains Monsanto’s technical manager Manda Sansom. “Even the slightest touch can cause painful blisters and severe skin irritation.”
Spot treatment with Roundup ProVantage or Roundup ProBio is the preferred method of control and will give excellent results, she points out.
“The formulation is the safest to use near water and carries no Irritant symbol on the can, so is safe to operators, animals and the environment,” adds Manda. “Application should be carried out wearing face shield, gloves, overalls and wellingtons and contact with the plant sap avoided.”
Spraying with a vehicle mounted sprayer or knapsack or weedwiper application are all effective and stem injection is a useful method when working amongst desirable plants and shrubs or near watercourses.

Designed to cater for everyone, LEARNING LIVE will play a major role at SALTEXwhich will be held at the NEC, Birmingham on the 4 and 5 November 2015.
The carefully constructed programme has now been completed with the Institute of
Groundsmanship (IOG) starting to release further details over the next few weeks.
The first guest speaker to be announced is Ian Craig, regional agronomist for the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI), who experienced a bizarre set of circumstances while working at the Africa Cup of Nations 2015.
In his seminar, titled ‘Road Blocks, Riots and Voodoo Rituals’, Ian will be relaying his experiences of the biggest challenge he has ever had to overcome in his career.
With the tournament switching from Morocco to Equatorial
Guinea at the last minute due to fears over the Ebola outbreak, Ian and the team faced an uphill battle to prepare the pitches in time.
Limited resources and minimal technology made the task near-on impossible and that was without the likes of riots, roadblocks and rituals.

What will you do to raise money for HortAid in 2015?
HortAid aims to raise as much money as possible to help horticulturists in need of Perennial’s support.
Our “Go Green for HortAid” event in September 2014 raised more than £10,000 and is back in the first two weeks of September 2015, bigger and even better with a London to Brighton Bike Ride
and a team entering the Nuts Challenge, plus more!

The garden, which was designed by Simon Fagg and built by Appleyard Landscape was part of the RHS’ Greening Grey Britain campaign and aimed to show visitors that they can create a front garden that incorporates the functionality of everyday life, alongside inspirational planting and sustainable water management.
The design offers a responsible way of dealing with rainwater runoff with its green roofed car port and the SuDS compliant Flexi-Pave surfacing, supplied by KBI.
The Flexi-Pave was supported by a Goldpath subbase, chosen because of its natural setting properties which bind the gravel together to create a compacted surface that remains firmer than conventional loose aggregate.
The main planting beds were covered by bright Derbyshire Gold chippings which surrounded the striking central spiral, providing a distinctive contrast to the drought resistant green planting and the pink wooden sleepers of the raised beds.
As well as offering a practical car parking area, Spiralling Into Control demonstrated how various aspects of gardening can be incorporated into an efficient and versatile space. Vegetable and composting areas were created alongside dedicated wildlife segments such as the sunken raingarden that was banked by Scottish Boulders to support a variety of habitats.
The garden offered a unique experience to visitors at Tatton by showing how sustainability and planting can be integrated into any design when creating a front garden which is used for parking.

Radley College benefits from new mowers with aid of lease agreement
Boys’ independent boarding school Radley College, near Oxford, has invested in Toro yet again as a recently signed lease agreement sees the arrival of five new mowers.
With a wide range of turf-based sports on offer – including rugby, field hockey, cricket and even golf, with a beautifully manicured nine-hole course – it’s the job of Adam King, grounds manager, to maintain the school’s reputation for its great sports facilities.
Adam explains why he decided to opt for a five-year lease agreement as opposed to purchasing the machines. “Financially, it was a better deal for us,” he says.
“Our existing Toro machines were in need of an upgrade and
the lease agreement allowed us to have new machines straight away, while also covering winter service, and all at a fixed cost.
“This lets us manage our budget and, as well as replace some models like for like, we’ve been able to upgrade to better models on others,” he adds.
In the substantial £170,000 deal, the prestigious private school has taken delivery of a Groundsmaster 3400D, a high performance 4WD out-front rotary mower; two Reelmaster 3100-Ds, providing a precision cut for a wide range of applications; a Reelmaster 6700-D, with mowing flexibility and a durable drive system; and a Groundsmaster 4300D, which boasts an average 5.4 acres an hour of mowing capacity.
With an 18-strong team in the estates department, including groundsmen, greenkeepers and gardeners, Adam notes what he and the rest of the grounds staff find most appealing about Toro.
Adaptability and mowing flexibility also mark highly, says Adam. “We can use them to maintain the sports fields, whether that be polo, rugby football or hockey, and the machines then also double up on our golf course. They’re great at handling all manner of turf surfaces.”
For conservation uses, it has long been recognised that letting the grass grow long can benefit the insect and wildlife population of a local area. The mix contains a range of grasses that are useful for habitat creation.
This low-maintenance mix is excellent for conservation grassland areas and a suitable companion mix for areas adjacent to wildflower meadows where
will be a welcome addition to your weed control armoury. Highly effective against a wide range of weeds – especially Japanese Knotweed, packs a powerful punch from very low levels of active and a small 1 litre pack. Equally reassuring, has virtually no odour and is safe to grass.

Council secures future with Bowls England thanks to Toro irrigation tech
Warwick District Council’s greens at Victoria Park, Royal Leamington Spa – home of Bowls England – has ensured its continued success hosting international bowls events following a considerable investment in Toro.
Working with local company Avonmore Associates Ltd and Toro distributors Lely UK, the Council has upgraded its irrigation system with the installation of 45 Toro Infinity sprinklers and a TDC 2-wire control system.
With a 27-year old Toro irrigation system previously in place, the Council took the decision to upgrade following its success in becoming the ‘centre of excellence’ for outdoor bowls in England. Already the home
of the Bowls England Ladies National Championships, in late 2012 Bowls England voted that the town’s famous Victoria Park greens host all national championships, international trials and international events from 2014 onwards.
The decision, which also saw the relocation of the Bowls England headquarters to Royal Leamington Spa, called for a re-evaluation of the facility’s technology; a move jointly instigated by the STRI, Warwick District Council and head greenkeeper, Michael Finch.
Michael explains more: “Our previous irrigation system was very old; it was time for a modernisation. The STRI also visited and said we needed an operational
system good enough for Bowls England – in essence, we needed reliability and upto-date technology to ensure the club continues hosting international events.”
Opting for the Toro TDC System, which uses innovative technology to provide a safe, reliable and energy efficient irrigation solution, Michael says that the new addition is not only simple to use, but flexible enough to meet his and his greenkeepers’ needs.
As well as other benefits, including now being able to run off the mains, which provides much purer water than the local river, Michael says one of the best features is the ability to water twice the space in the same time.
“We can now water two greens at a time, which is great, as we can complete the job much quicker with less interruption. And as we have two pumps, not only does the water flow better, but we can reach 23m, which is an extra 2m upgrade.”
This extra reach, along with having nine sprinklers on each green (the usual is four), ensures Michael and his team don’t miss any patches; a problem that can easily arise when faced with wind on a 4-sprinkler green.

EvenSprey Club eases spray duties
A host of improvements to the walk-behind EvenSprey 250 from Vitax Supaturf make the new Club model a must-have for grounds professionals keen to apply fertilisers and other turf treatments accurately and economically.
Used by award-winning grounds professionals to help maintain sports and amenity areas in prime condition, UK designed and developed EvenSprey boom sprayers have transformed the application of liquids, dramatically improving operational convenience.
Already a popular addition to the pitch maintenance fleet, the 250 just got better, with the Club even easier to use and allowing greater
coverage than its predecessor thanks to increased battery size.
The refashioned handlebar design provides smoother movement across the turf, while the more powerful 9Amp rechargeable battery gives the grounds team valuable extra spray time.
Repositioned, fully encased motor and tidier hose boosts streamlining on the lightweight Club and the bigger lid on the 25l tank aids refilling. Like the 250 model, the EvenSprey Club still comes with 1.5m spray boom (1m pass), Shurflo pump, pneumatic tyres and optional spray lance.

New wetting agent technology
The new micelle wetting agent technology in Propel-R has proved very effective in reducing water repellency to zero.
The micelle rods have a lower friction coefficient than other wetting agents, which allows Propel-R to pass more rapidly into the soil profile to ensure a consistent and complete permeation of moisture within the rootzone.
The result is excellent control of Dry Patch, rapid transportation of water from the playing surface and maintains a balanced of moisture/air ratio for improved root development.
Turf is severely affected by Dry Patch causes the rooting of the grass to be significantly restricted.
Plants with a shallow and poorly developed root zone are the most susceptible to drought and will eventually die.

API welcomes Generation
Inactive report but calls for wider remit
The Association of Play Industries (API) is urging policy makers and head teachers to take a broad approach to tackling the physical inactivity crisis so that children of all ages and abilities are motivated to be active before, after and throughout the school day.
The API, the voice of the UK play sector, welcomes the key recommendations set out in not-for-profit health body ukactive’s Generation Inactive report, launched by Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, but is concerned that it will encourage policy initiatives that over-focus on school sport to the detriment of other important, more inclusive forms of physical activity like outdoor learning and play.
API Manager Deborah Holt says: “We wholeheartedly support the report’s recommendations for head teachers to implement a whole-school approach to physical activity which sees physical literacy valued as highly – and assessed as rigorously by Ofsted - as literacy and numeracy.
“We are concerned, however, at the implications
of the recommendation to introduce structured playtime activities. This will inevitably enforce participation in rigid, competitive sports activities which alienate many children and may put them off physical activity for life.
“Children also need opportunities to play freely and spontaneously between lesson time. The physical, developmental and social benefits of active outdoor play are well-evidenced and we believe sacrificing play would have a negative impact on children’s wellbeing.”
The association supports ukactive’s recommendations to improve teacher training
but calls to extend the scope beyond PE provision. It says that teacher training institutions should provide high quality training on effective ways to build physical activity of all kinds into every aspect of the curriculum and of the school day.
Deborah Holt says: “The Generation Inactive report provides a strong and positive platform on which to start building the government’s promised national obesity strategy.
“Its findings are an important reminder that tackling physical inactivity should be the starting point for that strategy.”
Huck makes a splash
Huck Nets has been selected to design, supply and install the new adventure playground on the recreational space at The Leys in Witney, Oxfordshire.
The £250,000 project commissioned by Witney Town Council will also include a new Splash Park. The design has been agreed and the installation is to take place in June 2015. Huck Nets was first contacted by Witney Town Council in 2014 as they were looking for a centre piece for the main play area.
“We worked together with Witney Town Council and came up with a bespoke designed dual unit packed with play value,” said Huck’s Play and Design Manager, Tony Lucas. “This unit was exhibited at SALTEX 2014 and then taken back to the factory to be stored until the park was ready for the installation.
“Later in the year, Witney TC released a tender for the design and installation of a new play area at The Leys which was to incorporate the
Huck bespoke unit.”
The tender was to design, supply and install an adventurous play area for children of different ages and physical abilities. The design and play equipment should enhance the natural appearance and beauty of the Leys recreational space, as well as being both challenging and stimulating for upwards of 300 users a day.

Zaun is the only UK manufacturer of bespoke tennis mesh – and has upgraded its machining capability to drastically reduce manufacturing timescales and lead times.Zaun’s Advantage Tennis mesh eliminates many of the downsides of traditional tennis chain link fencing, which deforms over time and is easy to cut, disfigure and vandalise. By contrast, Zaun’s mesh can withstand heavy use while allowing easy viewing of the on-court action. It uses a 200mm x 40mm twin wire mesh, that is small enough to prevent tennis balls passing through thus improving gameplay and ball retention.

The Ice Cream Farm is now considered to house the largest purpose built ice cream parlours in the world. Together with other attractions and magical play
spaces, the farm provides more than enough to keep a family entertained for a whole day.
After understanding the scope of such an enticing project, the design team at Jupiter Play started working on creating and producing an innovative design proposal early in 2014.
The design team explains: “This is one of our most exciting designs in recent times and we are delighted to be part of this great adventure. We knew the design had to include very exciting play elements like tunnels, bridges and mushrooms to make the park look amazing and also to help vary the play experience.”

eibe gains trust for play area
Enveloped in the tranquility of the Chilterns Hills and steeped in French-renaissance history, Waddesdon Manor is a quintessential visitor attraction in the UK.
Built by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild in 1874, the stunning estate and popular National Trust destination in Buckinghamshire now includes an impressive eibe playground to add even more to its overall family appeal.
The beautiful country house, still owned by the Rothschild Foundation, realised that its existing play facilities needed a modern uplift; it was important that the whole visitor experience was enhanced.
Taking the specific brief on board and working to a £28,000 budget, eibe
introduced a selection of great play equipment that not only blended in with the environment, but also offered outstanding play value for children of differing ages. A covered slide and a thrilling tube slide give users an exhilarating escape. Two new robinia rockers complement the area perfectly.
“Whenever we work with National Trust properties, we are respectful of the history and traditions of the estate,” comments eibe’s managing director, Paul Redden,
“It is imperative that we listen to the brief and respond with appropriate play solutions, so that families can enjoy their days out even more than they did previously.”

Farm themed playground for Lee Valley
Farm Themed Playground for Lee Valley Farm has enhanced its family picnic area with the addition of an exciting new farm themed playground designed and installed by Russell Play.
Alongside the picnic tables children can now play at being a farmer, a vet or a farm shop owner while other family members may choose to relax with a drink from Lee Valley Farm’s own Orchard Cafe.
The Picnic and Play area of Lee Valley Farm is situated right in the centre of the farm so it is visited at some point by most families during their day out. The playground’s
central location makes it a focal point in the farm and so has enhanced its overall appearance and has become a small attraction in itself within Lee Valley Farm.
Russell Play was one of seven companies that tendered for the play area. The reasons Russell Play won the tender were down to the bespoke design of the play equipment, the ability to farm theme the items and the fact that they are made from a very durable natural Robinia timber.
The tough Robinia timber structures include ‘Connie the Combine’, a large combine harvester that children can
climb on, crawl through and slide down or pretend to drive. Likewise with ‘Tex the Tractor’ a small tractor complete with trailer for smaller children which also has a slide.
For more farm pretend play, kids can use the wooden vet clinic or buy and sell things at the play farm shop.
Complementing these in a similar natural wood material are a roundabout, a tyre swing, some hay bales to balance on and also some playful carved animals including a sheep.
Russell Play Enquiry 53Something fishy about this toddler waterplay combination
There is little as alluring as water play, particularly as we prepare to enter the long school summer holidays and a new product from Timberplay has combined the popular Mushroom Pump with a wooden platform featuring two friendly fish.
This Water Combination ‘Small Fish’ is proving very attractive for toddlers who find the Mushroom Pump very easy to manipulate, and the stairs behind the Fish enable younger children to easily access the water source.
The combination of channels and sand table helps children understand how water flows, creating and controlling the passage of water as it makes its way along the equipment.
In terms of inclusive play equipment, there is little more
popular than waterplay, which fascinates children from the very young through to teenagers.
Managing Director at Timberplay, Paul Collings comments: ”Having worked on countless play developments over the past 15 years, I believe that Waterplay is the single most effective way of providing varied and inclusive play opportunities for a large number of children.
“In fact, if I had my wish, every play area would include a playground pump. This new Fish Platform combination is a great way to signifi cantly enhance a toddler play area and sits very well alongside sand play and other toddler equipment.”

Your Community Can with This Girl Can and Proludic
Proludic has launched a new video in support of the This Girl Can initiative, showing how high quality outdoor gym facilities in parks which are freely accessible to local communities, can be used to great effect.
In particular, all women fitness session are being run with great success on the Proludic Urbanix equipment range.
This Girl Can is a national campaign run by Sport England, launched in 2014 to promote the benefi ts of getting more girls and women involved in exercise and sport.
In the UK, women and girls are falling short in comparison to men on completing the required amount of physical activity. The campaign aims to encourage more women and girls aged between 14 and 40 years to get involved in sport and not be ashamed, embarrassed or frightened to do so.
Proludic supports This Girl Can as it works within the play and sport sector and is well aware of the problem. The company has been an avid campaigner for some time for a change in providing the right equipment that all demographics can enjoy and use.
In 2008, it launched the MUSA campaign (Multi Use Sports Area) to try and positively
engage female teenagers into using free and local sports equipment in their parks.
Proludic believes that by educating Local Authorities and other providers in how to provide the right equipment and showing them how different sessions can be organised and run on the equipment once installed, it can help to combat this
problem and make a huge difference.
To arrange for a Proludic representative to present this video and highlight how your community can get involved please email marketing@ proludic.co.uk quoting ‘our community can!’.

New surface gets to grips with slips on external steps
Thermapply, a unique non-slip surface application specifically designed to eliminate slips, trips and falls at outdoor public and commercial spaces is now available.
The product, which is manufactured in the UK by Thermedia, has been developed in response to the general state of concrete, tarmac and chequerplate surfaces and directly addresses these slip issues.
It has been developed specifically for stairs and walkways in high traffic areas and offers a tailored, ‘full step’ anti-slip solution which has been SATRA certificated to withstand one million footfalls. In addition, Thermapply is backed by a 10-year manufacturer’s guarantee and conforms to BS EN1824.
When used in stadia and venues the product will
allow any stadium to be fully compliant with recommendations made by the DDA, Access for All, Sport England, FSIF (Football Stadia Improvement Fund) and the Green Guide (Guide to Safety at Sports Grounds) and following these trials, it is now installed in venues around the country.
Thermapply’s unique composition is thermoformed in-situ, cooling to a solid, non-porous state that will retain its non-slip properties. This is because the infused aggregate runs throughout
the depth of the thermoplastic material, ensuring that it remains non-slip and maintains both its looks and safety properties for at least the next decade.
Should a venue wish to capitalise on its floor space or step space, Thermapply allows surface branding to be incorporated, enabling customers to insert corporate logos, messaging, instructions or numbers to the step edging or around the step area.

Notts Sport launches innovative new Shockwave system
Leading synthetic surfacing supplier Notts Sport has launched a new product which is set to revolutionise the construction of artificial sports pitches.
Innovative ShockWave tiles – so-called because of their wave-like contours – slot together like jigsaw pieces and form the key component of the ShockWave EcoBase system.
These lightweight, easy-tohandle tiles are much simpler and quicker to install than tarmac or stone bases which is how pitches have traditionally been laid for synthetic facilities.
The system is guaranteed, with the correct maintenance and usage, to provide a minimum of 20 years. Notts Sport has successfully used a similar tile system as part of its
ChildsPlay solution for many years, and has now enhanced this product for use in sport, with an upgraded thickness and density.
The structured stability provided by the ShockWave tile means that half the depth of quarried aggregate is required underneath the base, therefore reducing the cost of materials, the installation time, and the number of heavy lorries required to
deliver materials and remove excavated earth from the site.
The system has gone through full laboratory testing at Loughborough University, with further performance and drainage testing at Labosport. ShockWave is patented and comes with a comprehensive 20-year warranty.
Made from Expanded Polypropylene (EPP), the
ShockWave tile is 100% recyclable.
Notts Sport has established itself as one of the world’s foremost specialists in the design and supply of synthetic surfacing systems for sport, play and leisure.

Installation of new outdoor sport and PE facilities for primary schools helped boost the UK play market in the second quarter of 2015, according to the Association of Play Industries (API).
Latest figures from API member companies show order values worth £48.2 million for the second quarter of 2015 – a 3.8 per cent increase on the first quarter of 2015 (£46.4 million) and a 9.6 per cent increase on the same quarter last year (£43.9 million).
While Sport England’s National Lottery-funded Primary Spaces initiative continues to buoy orders in the education sector, budget constraints for local authorities
- traditionally the UK’s biggest play buying market - are having a major impact on public play provision for local communities.
As an active member of the All Party Parliamentary Group for A Fit and Healthy Childhood, Children’s Play Policy Forum and Federation of Sports and Play Associations, the API campaigns for policy recognition for the value of play.
It is working hard to ensure a role for play in the forthcoming national obesity strategy, due to be unveiled by the government later this year.
Kennington Park rejuvenates its outoor gym equipment
The brief was to rejuvenate an area of Kennington Park devoted to adult fitness that was currently fitted with a few items that were damaged through vandalism, were beyond their commissionable life and in some cases were inappropriate for the heavy use and the increased demand for this type of equipment within public spaces.
Fenland Leisure Products had delivered within the previous year a large and expansive range of adult fitness equipment for Lambeth BC on a separate park (Clapham Common) which had been a great success and received much praise both locally and nationally. It was with this in mind that Lambeth BC again approached FLP to design, cost and deliver a similar style project tailored to the needs of the smaller Kennington Park.
After consultation with both Lambeth BC and members of the local community, and independent fitness instructors, FLP designed a circuital layout of items that included a range of both steel and timber constructed pieces.
Multi overhead bar fitness stations were complimented
with Abdominal Crunch benches, gate Climb obstacles and other lower level pieces to be used for step up and balance work, all designed to provide a full body workout.
High quality design specification, longevity and safety are at the forefront of all FLP installations, and with this in mind a premium quality all weather Fibre fall Rubber Safer Surfacing was installed beneath the higher items to ensure durability of the surface beneath these high use pieces, along with protection against injuries caused through falling off of the items.
This was then complimented by using Safer Grass surfacing beneath the lower items again to ensure longevity of use and prevention of surface wear within the footfall areas.
And finally, a bespoke circuit sign was then designed and printed to Lambeth Borough Councils requirements, including all safety notices and logos, depicting the layout of the circuit, details of the pieces included and advice on use.
Fenland Leisure Products Enquiry 67Sutcliffe Play delivers natural play to history-rich area
Sutcliffe Play has installed a range of natural, Jurassicthemed play equipment in Cuckfield, one of the most important sites in the world for early dinosaur discoveries.
The new play equipment provides challenging, adventurous play opportunities whilst reflecting the history of the area.
It was in a quarry in Cuckfield that a fossil from the first dinosaur known to science was uncovered and identified in the 1820s. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, local community group the Cuckfield Society raised funds and worked with Mid-Sussex
District Council to enhance the existing village play area with a new play area to reflect the area’s history.
The new playground was required to have low level boulders for seating and play set into the existing landform, some to contain ‘fossils’ of turtles, crocodiles and dinosaurs, as well as a large play item for older children. The Cuckfield Society consulted its members and local children to help direct the project.
Sutcliffe Play designed and installed an exciting play area featuring natural elements such as boulders set into
the bank for stepping and sitting on. The main feature is a bespoke rock stack - built with rocks similar to those excavated from the quarry at Whitemans Green where the fossils were discovered -to challenge children to adventurous play. The rock stack also features a horizontal net and a climbing net, offering climbing and balancing play experiences.
“We wanted a play area which reflected the area’s exciting history, complemented the natural surroundings and challenged children to exciting play which allows them to experience risk in a safe environment,” says
Nicole Batten-Evatt of Mid Sussex DC. “The finished playground has certainly met our expectations, and it’s always busy.”
Equipment used includes climbing/seating boulders: these boulders complement the natural surroundings and can be used for both climbing and seating, encouraging social play.
The special rock stack feature a horizontal net and a climbing net, this large play item delivers challenging, physical play for older children.

St Vincent Plaza in Glasgow launches public realm
Independent design, environment and sustainability consultancy, LDA Design were the Landscape Architects for the public realm scheme which forms part of the St Vincent Plaza development in Glasgow.
The completion of this significant public space within the heart of the city marks LDA Design’s first constructed public realm project in Scotland.
The space will be formally opened to the public when practical completion of the
Hauraton
building is fully completed in September.Within the space, raised planters create a dramatic terrace that includes mixed ornamental tree and shrub planting.
This gives seasonal interest to the space and creates an appealing setting to the building which helps define St Vincent Plaza as Glasgow’s premier business address.
The terraced plaza space also uses lighting to bring valuable dynamism to the public realm, changing the character of the space from day to night, in the
way that the planting does from season to season.
With a focus on making the new link a safe and well-lit, LDA Design worked closely with lighting designers Lightfolio and Castle Building Services to create a bespoke lighting scheme that will encourage activity and footfall to benefit both safe use and enhancement of the city’s evening economy.
Up-lighting to the M8 underpass and new feature signage forms part of the gateway to the space, bringing
further vibrancy to the Glasgow International Financial Services District (IFSD).
The scheme has been designed to achieve BREEAM ‘Excellent’ and EPC ‘B’ ratings; within the public realm, it focusses on the use of sustainable and high quality materials.

The need for better gate safety is certainly a pressing one, with HSE figures showing numerous adults and children have been tragically affected by automated gates and with the Door and Hardware Federation estimating that, of the 500,000 automated gates in the UK, less than 30% are safe to use, the time has come to take remedial action. The ‘Automated Gate Safety Matrix App’ works by asking over thirty multiple choice questions to assess risk

Maintenance options keep growing
Reco has extended its portfolio of Italian manufacturer Breviglieri’s range of machinery with the addition of a range of flail mowers and offset verge mowers.
Lightweight and manoeuvrable, the multi-purpose side shift mowers are suitable for general grass cutting, topping and mulching.
Suitable for tractors from 15–180hp with working widths of up to 4m, these models can be fitted to front or rear three point linkages. A high front clearance means that they can be used for topping, mowing and pruning of material from 2–7cm.
Standard features include a double skin frame, optional inner double toothed counter-knives, a gearbox unit with overrunning
clutch and rear PTO. Rotors are equipped with ‘universal Tri-Y’ or ‘hammer’ knives for a more uniform cut.
Brevi offset flail mowers offer a solution for landscape professionals looking to maintain roadsides, hedges and embankments.
These models can be operated in a variety of conditions due to the hitch position capability and can mow behind the tractor or shift to the side whilst working on slopes. A hydraulically controlled tilting mechanism allows operation of the mulching head at an angle that will enable maintenance of embankments, slopes and verges whilst keeping the tractor in a safe position.
This series ranges from the ‘Mini Master’ for 15-40hp tractors and
clearance of vegetation up to 3cm to the heavy duty ‘Hypermaster XL’ offset mower which is suitable for 120hp tractors and is ideal to clear slopes, ditches and general green areas tackling material up to 6cm in diameter. Working widths are up to 2.5m.
Standard features include a rear floating Cat II three-point hitch, side and tilt hydraulic shift working positions and double welded skin frame. Offset mowers can be optionally fitted with an anti-shock hydraulic safety valve on the side shifting cylinder allowing the machine to safely return to position if an unexpected obstacle is encountered.
New ranges
Weaving Machinery now offers hedge and verge equipment from Agrimaster.
The versatile XB mower is light enough for use with compact tractors of between 15 and 25hp yet robust enough to cut and mulch everything from long grass to prunings and briars up to 10mm thick. The full width 140mm diameter rear roller gives accurate cutting height control and leaves an attractive striped finish. Manual side shift adjustment makes safe and easy work of cutting alongside fences and ditches. The triple V belt drive absorbs shock loads while the over-run gearbox protects the tractor PTO system for continuous reliability.
Described as the ideal flail mower for trimming roadside verges, ditches and embankment sides, the XL can be used behind the tractor or hydraulically offset to operate outside the tractor rear wheel. The cutting head can be angled from a vertical position for siding hedges to 45deg downwards into ditches at the touch of a
lever. A hydraulic safety breakback system prevents collision damage. Tractor requirement is two individual spool valves and a 540 rpm pto speed.
Where a neat finish is required in hedges up to 2cm thick, the Giraffe cutterbar hedgecutter uses a hydraulically driven 1.22m blade which reciprocates 300 times a minute to give a clean cut and a high work rate.
The articulated arm allows a wide range of cutting positions from below tractor width to giving a flat top cut on hedges 2.8m high. Tractors require a hydraulic output of not less than 34l/min at 189 bar.
Designed specifically for use with compact tractors with a minimum weight of 1200kg, the Green Shark range will mow ditches down to 2.8m below ground level and trim hedges up to 5.9m above ground level with a 120cm cutting width. Features include a safety breakaway system to protect the arm from
accidental damage. The belt drive system absorbs any shock loads to the high speed flail rotor and hydraulic motor.
Flexibility and durability
Opico supplies the Maschio flail mower range, with models and features to suit most applications.
In the design of the flail mower range Maschio has put to good use 45 years of expertise gained from building gearboxes and drive lines for rotary cultivators. The range starts at 1m and goes to 6.2m, all fitted with hammer flails – the smaller models being able to cope with 6cm diameter material, the larger models 12cm diameter, fallen branches for example.

Latest addition to the Twose range is TP540C variable forward reach model which features a 0.9m forward extension enabling operators to position the flailhead directly alongside the cab, allowing the driver to concentrate on the road ahead.
The 5.4m reach arm has become one of the company’s best-selling models. Aimed at contractors, the TP540C features highperformance 65hp hydraulics and is a value for money alternative to the latest generation of VFR arms currently on the market.
Twose director of sales and marketing Tim Coleridge says: “The enhanced visibility and comfort delivered by the machine not only boosts safety and precision, but also improves comfort and allow operators to work longer, increasing their productivity.”
The configuration of the arm can also be adjusted at the touch of button, switching from forward reach to a conventional straight arm position in seconds. The three-point linkage mounted machine has a 200 litre oil tank for smooth arm movements, choice of cable and hydraulic controls and 1.2m belt driven HD flailhead. Prices start at £25,850 and the 6.0m TP600C is available from £26,850.

Continued growth Sales for flail mowers and mulchers continue to grow into the UK through the successful partnership between Teagle Machinery and Italian manufacturer Berti. UK Sales Manager Jim Squires points out that the long standing relationship between the two family businesses at Berti and Teagle means that long after the
initial purchase, outstanding after sales service is assured.
The collaboration offers a complete range of machines, from the compact tractor range rated from 12hp to the heavy duty forestry range up to 200hp.
A comprehensive range of verge mower models, aimed at amenity and local authority applications, offer the greatest flexibility. These models can be used in a vertical position for hedges, horizontal for verge or pasture mowing, or any angle in-between for banks and drainage channels.
The Teagle range of verge mowers consists of 19 models with working widths from 1.25 -2.5m, suitable for compact tractors from 25hp to agricultural tractors of 200hp. Berti recently extended the TA/PS Verge Mower range to provide greater machine offset, reducing the proximity of the tractor to steep banks or verges, thereby improving operator safety.
Whether managing grassland or clearing gorse at the roadside,
several features including a high rotor speed, wide hammer flails and protected bearings in the rotor and roller ensure that both the finished cut and mulching capability is outstanding with operating costs remaining low, suggests Jim Squires.
Teagle also distributes a wide range of hydraulic drive mulchers for skid steers and excavators from 1.5 to 30 tonnes. “Where contractors or councils have capital tied up in plant which is not heavily utilised this is the ideal way to make the most of these assets. Models are available for all applications, whether simply maintaining grass or hedges, clearing sites or managing areas where accessibility is limited, for example for railways or waterways,” comments Jim.
Wessex International has launched a new range of tractor mounted hedgecutters. Flagship models the T500G and TPE600 have a reach of 4.85m and 5.96m respectively with a 1.2m working width head, and feature
the option of cable controls or the EP-Tronic proportional control joystick.
In the mid-range the TA38OD and TA43OD offer 3.84m and 4.33m reaches, with a 1m width cutting head and a choice of Y-pattern or boot flails and a mechanical break-away device.
The arms are fabricated from heavy gauge circular steel tube for maximum resistance to torsion stress and the moulded hydraulic oil tank is designed to significantly reduce the overall weight. A thermostatically controlled oil cooler is an optional extra.
For a smaller hedgecutter, designed to suit compact tractors from 20hp, the TA26 and TA32 both feature a 0.9m cutting head. The former is a right handed hedge cutter which offers maximum user comfort while allowing the driver to view the operation over their right
shoulder. The left handed TA32 is designed for use on the public highway.
The floating head on these machines allows an even cut over uneven ground and front steel guards eliminate projectiles being thrown out in work. There’s an adjustable steel roller and tractor stabilisers help to maintain rigidity on the tractor. An additional option is a cutter bar which is ideal for use on public footpaths.
The new verge mower range from Wessex International includes models for tractors from 20hp to 100hp-plus. Designed for demanding applications where high productivity and reliability are paramount the Wessex ZHE2500 verge mower has a working width of 2.5m and will operate between -60 and +90 degrees, while other features include replaceable skid shoes, a double skin deck and heavy shock
absorbing springs. A floating A-frame allows the machine to follow ground contours.
Wessex ZMTE and ZLE verge mowers in 1.6m, 1.8m and 2.0m working widths are offset to the right hand side of the tractor. For working on the public highway a left hand version, the ZMTE2000, is available. Designed to suit tractors from 50hp these mowers can operate between -60 and +90 degrees of horizontal both in-line or offset outside the tractor wheelings. The ZMTE is a general purpose machine featuring a hydraulic breakaway system, while the ZLE is a heavy duty range with mechanical breakaway and a double skin deck.
Designed specifically for use with smaller tractors from 20hp, the ZME-125 and ZME155 are offset verge and bank mowers ideal for working in larger gardens, private estates and smallholdings. They can be used as an in-line flail behind the tractor or fully offset to the right and offer a cutting angle between -50 and +90deg.
Lightweight reach arm meets contractor needs Buckinghamshire contractor Glynn Spratt decided to mark the start of the hedge cutting season with a brand new reach arm from Twose, switching
“I’ve
it is also robust and delivers a very good finish.”
“It has a low horsepower requirement which is ideal for my Massey tractor and it’s very agile and precise - making it easy for me to cut hedges and verges in confined areas, parks, and public areas.”
Glynn’s decision to go for a Twose machine was helped by previous positive experience with the company’s rollers.
He explained: “The specification of the TA420 was just what I wanted – but reliability is vital for a contractor because any downtime is costly and means you let down customers.”
“I’d had Twose rollers before and always been pleased with the build quality so I was prepared to try one of its reach arms and have been very happy with the performance so far.”
Based in Stokenchurch near High Wycombe, Glynn is an experienced contractor with customers throughout Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.
Specialist hedgecutting kit is the business The Landscape Group has invested in specialist
hedgecutting equipment to meet the requirements of nationwide contracts.
Angus Lindsay, Group Head of Assets and Fleet Management says, “We operate nationwide from our Coventry base and are seeing a growing requirement for our equipment fl eet to be more multi-functional. The Reform Metrac H7X gives us wide-ranging capability, from safe operation when working on the maintenance of steep banking to sports turf maintenance.”
“We travel big distances to fulfill grounds maintenance contracts and having the H7X means we can offer the optimum number of services with the one machine. Currently we are operating it with a range of attachments which include a 2 metre Muthing flail, a McConnel FM Power Arm and also a Becx Tri-rotor rotary head specifi cally designed for hedge cutting. The Becx literally turns the resulting debris to dust which we then disperse with a rear mounted blower.”
“The addition of the Reform Metrac H7X to the fleet enables us to tender with confidence, nationwide, for an increasingly wide variety of contracting work.”
Compact and durable –mid-size mowers from Toro
The Toro range of Mid-Size mowers offers landscape professionals exceptional productivity in a machine compact enough to be easily transported in a commercial van.
For the most demanding jobs, professional contractors can rely on the Toro Hydro-Drive MidSize which offers a choice of rear discharge options. Adding the flail attachment provides the ideal choice for mowing rough, overgrown areas. The mower is powered by an 18hp (13.4kW) Kawasaki OHV V-Twin petrol engine and features electric engine start operation. The
pistol grip control layout gives independent control to each hydraulic pump and motor for excellent manoeuverability.
The 7-gauge rear discharge decks are immensely strong and the spindle assembly is the industry’s toughest, with 23.8cm (9.375”) diameter spindles with maintenance-free sealed bearings. Three deck options, 81 cm (32”), 92 cm (36”) and 122 cm (48”) are interchangeable and the flail attachment, with 24 independent blades, can handle the toughest overgrown areas.

Racecourse invests in Toro as plans to improve racing surface complete
Norfolk’s Great Yarmouth Racecourse – one of 15 racecourses run by the Arena Racing Company (ARC) across the UK – has invested in a new Toro Groundsmaster 4110-D.
The new mower, delivered late June this year, was brought on board following the ARC’s plans to improve the racing surface at Great Yarmouth by levelling the home straight.
With the work successfully carried out over winter, Richard Aldous, clerk of course, says that the next move was to invest in a lighter, modern mower.
“We spent a lot of money levelling off the home straight, which led us to look for a new, lighter and more modern machine that was really up to date,” he says.
Previously, the 7.4 hectare course relied on a tractor to mow the turf, but the new purpose built Groundsmaster 4110-D offers many benefits in comparison, says Richard.
“It’s brilliant; it cuts the course
beautifully, is easy to use and is much more versatile now we don’t have to use the tractor out on the course,” he explains.
Equipped with a powerful 58hp diesel engine, the Groundsmaster 4110-D is an innovative widearea rotary mower featuring an all out-front mower deck for superior operator visibility and outstanding productivity.
Richard says Great Yarmouth’s head groundsman Richard Bradley is also a fan: “We couldn’t get him off it for the first 10 days of it arriving.
“We trialled a few other machines, but our head groundsman was keen to get a Toro. Danny Lake [Lely area sales manager] showed us a couple of different models, but the one we chose was in the right price bracket, and we also liked that it’s a front mower.”
Lely’s reputation for great after sales care and customer service was another reason for choosing Toro, Richard explains. “Danny is first-class – he really knows his stuff.
We’re confident we’ll get looked after.”
With a newly levelled home straight and Toro mower on hand to maintain optimum
turf condition, racing at Great Yarmouth looks set to recommence 30th August this year.

Mounty performance enhances countryside stewardship
Supplied by Ilminster based Loxston Ground care , Country Conservation, who offer a countryside stewardship service to a wide range of users, have recently added a Reform 101hp, four-stroke, diesel, hydrostatic Mounty 100V tractor to their fleet.
Proprietor Jon Weatherhead says: “We did compare the Reform with a direct competitor but chose the Mounty as we felt it was the more dual purpose machine. We were also reassured by the level of after sale support on offer and dealer support based locally to our business. We will use the Mounty to cut grass and mulch scrub on wildlife sites throughout Devon, Cornwall and Somerset. It will also be used for other agricultural services we provide.
“We maintain steep sloping ground at risk of becoming
overgrown with invasive plants, typically gorse, thorn and bracken and work with the National Trust, Wildlife trusts and landowners who have countryside stewardship agreements in place, to manage the land in a manner beneficial to wildlife. The tractor will be equipped with flail mulchers to enable this vegetation to be cleared.
“We also have implements which can be powered by the 100v to cut grass, apply fertiliser, harrow and roll as well as operate post driving equipment for fencing.
“Having the Mounty means we can now offer roadside embankment maintenance as a service and the machine is also ideally suited for solar farm work.”
Since taking delivery in mid – June the Mounty 100V has
proved itself to be a strong platform from which various implements can be operated. It is more powerful than our previous tractor which means we can use a Muthing 2.2mtr flail with ease in heavy grass growth to improve both output and productivity.
The crab steering function of the tractor and the ease with which the steering angle can be set and then replicated on the return cut at the opposite angle, is a tremendous time saving and safety feature delivering much improved stability on steep slopes. Also the visibility around the tractor when driving is better as you are slightly higher up with no obstructions to the side. This means potential damage and downtime from objects hidden in vegetation is reduced.
Simon Richard, agent for the Reform range in the UK added: “The hydrostatic drive, low
centre of gravity, four wheel steering manouvrability and wide footprint make the Mounty 100V the ultimate workhorse for a wide range of tasks. Strong linkages make it the perfect power base for a range of heavier attachments including a frontloader.
„The Mounty really comes into its own where severely sloping ground of up to 45 degrees is involved. The model also offers weight compensation and vibration damping to protect both operator and machine.
“The Mounty 100V is also optionally available with exhaust emission stage 3B, to further reduce pollution and environmental impact.”
Manchester City’s football academy chooses Toro
Manchester City’s City Football Academy (CFA) – the Premier League football club’s recently opened youth development and first team training centre in the heart of East Manchester – has continued its relationship with Toro for all its turf maintenance needs.
The 80–acre regenerated brownfield site is adjacent to the Etihad Stadium and part of the wider 200 acres known as the Etihad Campus.
Following a deal made with local Toro dealers Cheshire Turf Machinery, five Toro Reelmaster 5510 mowers, two Multi Pro 5800 sprayers, five Workman MDX-D utility vehicles and a ProCore 1298 aerator have been welcomed on site, along with three TYM 603 tractors.
MCFC grounds manager Roy Rigby, the man behind the decision to work with Toro, says it was a choice heavily based on reliability and his long history with the brand.
“The CFA has 16.5 football pitches in total, 13.5 of which are natural grass, so reliability
is key. With Toro, I know that no matter what the weather, the machine will always turn on and get the job done to the same high standard time after time,” Roy says.
Having worked with Toro and Cheshire Turf Machinery for the past 25 years of his career, Roy says he’s developed a great relationship with both companies over the years.
Managing a team of 18 people – 14 grounds staff at the new training grounds, and one landscaper and three grounds staff at the Etihad stadium – Roy says: “We already had Toro at MCFC’s old training grounds and I used Toro at Blackburn Rovers too, so I feel very comfortable with the machines, as do my grounds team.”
Lely UK Enquiry 93
Lely introduces service level agreement
Leading turfcare specialist Lely UK – sole distributor of Toro Commercial Products and TYM in the UK – has introduced a new Service Level Agreement (SLA) between the company and its network of machinery dealers and service centres.
With two of its own service centres, one in Sheffield Park, East Sussex, and one in St Neots, Cambridge, Lely says the new agreement is designed to align the customer service levels across the UK, and raise the support standards associated with its own bases and across its 20 independent, authorised service locations (ASL) and UK-wide dealer group.
Lely’s David Cole, senior manager, turf division, explains: “The SLA has been created to smooth out potential inconsistencies countrywide, providing a strong base-line standard of service commitment that end users of our products can access from any one of our ASLs across the UK.
“We’ve created common goals and values that are a benchmark for supporting the end user of any of the commercial turf products distributed by Lely. And because
these can be measured and monitored, we’re able to provide value and reassurance to our customers no matter where they are.”
Soon to be adopted by all Lely ASLs and dealers, the agreement outlines assurances including the ongoing auditing and skills development of all customer service points, a commitment to aftersales staff education, and a robust technical reporting and safety process linked to the equipment manufacturers.
Available response times to customers’ urgent requirements for spare parts are also set out, with parts stocked locally available for same day collection, delivery or dispatch – or next day timed delivery from another service location or national stock.
So far, all 20 ASLs have adopted the SLA standards and its ongoing audit programme, with Lely’s UK full line dealers now also in the process of its implementation. While the SLA applies to all UK dealers and service centres, it also applies to Lely’s own two service locations.
Ransomes remote controlled Spider mowers for council
Ransomes remotely operated Spider mowers, supplied by John Osman Groundcare of Oswestry, have been delivered to Conwy County Borough Council to help maintain the steep banks along the promenades of the local seaside towns.
Peter Barton-Price is the Open Spaces Area Manager and has worked for the Council for over 30 years, beginning his career as a gardener in the early 1980s. He was instrumental in the purchase of these specialist mowers and said: “For decades we have been maintaining these steep banks with either walk-behind mowers or with a team of operators using brushcutters.
“As a responsible employer the Council is committed to
the health and well-being of its employees and the purchase of these specialist mowers further demonstrates this commitment.
“Unlike other bank mowers, the Spiders have an integral winch, which allows the operators to anchor the mowers and prevent them from sliding down the inclines. There are no hand/arm vibration issues either as the machines are remotely operated.
“They will also increase our performance and productivity as the process is much quicker than the strimming option and we can redeploy the team to other functions, so it really is a winwin situation.”
Lyn Davies, Head of Open Spaces added: “The Ransomes Spider
SISIS TM1000 eliminates disruption for members
Sleaford Golf Club has an illustrious 100 year history which has been possible thanks to its dedicated greenkeepers who have been constantly committed to providing its members with a first class golf course.
Now thanks to the recent purchase of SISIS TM1000 tractor mounted heavy duty scarifier, the private club’s 600 plus members are set to see even more improvements.
Head greenkeeper Ian Batty said: “We’ve never had a lot of thatch here at Sleaford but we still need to hollow core to help reduce it. With hollow coring you obviously create quite a bit of disturbance and the members don’t particularly like
it especially as it disrupts playing time.”
Ian needed a solution and it was through an agronomist that he closely works with where he first heard about the SISIS Rotorake TM1000.
Like other scarifiers in the SISIS range, the Rotorake TM1000 works on the successful contrarotating principle for a clean, consistent performance with a selection of blades to suit key seasonal tasks.
The machine features a floating unit to follow ground contours and as well as scarifying, the TM1000’s interchangeable reels system means that it can undertake other tasks such as
ticked all the boxes; not only did it exceed our requirements, but there was a commitment from Ransomes and their local dealer to provide dedicated training for each member of the team. This dovetailed with our policy of
having LANTRA qualified and BAGMA trained operators, so it all worked extremely well.”

linear aeration, verticutting and brushing. The popular machine also has a ‘no tools required’ depth setting, ensuring that fast and simple adjustments can be made.
The weight of the collection box and material is carried by the main frame on the front roller
and is totally independent from the reel, which means when the machine is in use, the additional weight does not force the reel to scarify deeper than the user has set it.

Vredo improves pitch maintenance practices at Braintree
The Vredo 2.2m compact overseeder from Campey Turf Care Systems recently purchased by Braintree and District Council has changed the way it maintains its football pitches.
In former years, area team leader Rob Jarvis would plan to overseed the Districts 26 pitches at the end of May. Taking advantage of a short time slot before the football season commenced and the pitches were back in full swing.
However, the way the Vredo Compact Overseeder works has changed that, as Rob explains: “The Vredo system works by placing the seed directly into the ground. We can determine the depth ourselves and calibrate the amount of seed used. Because of the accuracy of this method and the high germination rate anticipated we have altered our overseeding programme.
“We have reduced the total volume of seed and now split the applications into two. We seed
the pitches once early in the year and then again in the autumn.”
Vredo Compact Seeders feature a Double disc system for precise seed delivery. Due to the unique action of the Vredo
seed application, the grass seed is placed in direct contact with the soil, giving almost total seed germination.
