a vital contribution to our physical and mental health and serving a range of signifi cant community benefits.

The Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (LUHC) Committee has today published correspondence from the Government responding to a series of questions raised by the Committee on public parks, inequality of access to green space, and the funding of public parks and green spaces. The letter from Dehenna Davison

MP, Minister for Levelling-Up, Department for Levelling-Up, Housing and Communities, includes information relating to spending on parks, monitoring access to green spaces, and the long-term funding for parks.

In 2017 the Committee for Housing, Communities and Local Government made 17

Celebrations commence to mark GreenMech at 30

With a rich history of supplying world-class woodchippers, 2023 sees the team at GreenMech proudly celebrating 30 years in business.

With their strongest product line-up to date, GreenMech look set to enter the next chapter with solutions that continue to set the industry standard in the UK and beyond.

While much may have changed in terms of products and features, GreenMech have called The Mill Industrial Park in Warwickshire their home since the company was founded in 1993 by, now Chairman, Tony Turner. From here, over 14,000 products have been designed

and manufactured, with more than half of the total product exported to customers globally.

The current range spans more than 15 units, with chipping capacities from 100mm up to 220mm.

Alongside innovations such as GreenMech’s revolutionary discblade chipping system, turntable technology and their SAFE-Trak and SURE-Trak systems for unparalleled embankment safety, one of the biggest introductions in recent years was the launch of the EVO Series in 2019.

Jonathan Turner, son of Tony and current GreenMech Managing Director said: “We are incredibly proud of our achievements but

“Since 2017 conditions have changed dramatically, as have citizens’ relationships with their neighbourhoods, in particular parks and green infrastructure,” says the Minister in the letter.

“Given the impact of the COVID[1]19 pandemic, over the last two years the emphasis of the Government’s work on parks was focused on public safety, including to prevent the further spread of COVID19, and now that we are living with COVID-19 on the role

“Some of the recommendations accepted in 2017 have been superseded by policy arrangements pertaining to comparable goals that better reflect the reality facing parks and park users today.”

The Minister then goes on to detail the scope of the support the Government has provided for parks and green spaces.

Clive Betts, Chair of the Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (LUHC) Committee said: “Parks should be a resource for all, making

The primary responsibility for maintaining our public parks lies with local councils, often supported by fantastic volunteer and civil society groups. The Government also has an important leadership and coordination role to play.

I’m sure those citizens and community groups who do such positive work for our parks and green spaces will have an interest in this Ministerial correspondence and the Government’s assessment of their own efforts in supporting the sector.”

are even more positive and excited about our future.

Welcome...

So, another Budget came and went without any significant help f or our industry.

But we were helpfully informed by Dehenna Davison MP, Minister for Levelling-Up, that the Government is investing a lot into our parks and green spaces in response to a committee of MPs investigating funding arrangements and priorities.

Although the Minister highlighted a number of schemes and programmes the Government has initiated, it represents a somewhat small investment given the amount of money the industry as a whole generates for the national economy and the recognised importance of the work it d oes.

The 2017 Communities and Local Government Committee’s public parks report recognised the vital contribution of parks and green spaces to areas such as public health, community integration and climate change and flood mitigation. In 2019, the Government outlined a programme of investment to help the industry, but much of this has slipped down the list of priorities. Ironically, the impact of the pandemic was cited by the Minister as the reason for the failure to make progress with the 2019 plans, despite the massive contribution the industry and our parks and green spaces made during the las t three years.

It is fitting that this month we highlight the Best of British with a special look at the home-grown companies who are helping to spearhead this dynamic industry and putting it on an internatio nal stage with the quality of its products, services and knowle dge. Jane Carley also looks at Sports Turf Maintenance, once more hi ghlighting how the UK often leads the world in this particular area.

This month we focus on the diverse nature of our industry, from Soils and Treatments to Water Management, Hard and Soft Landscaping to Pedestrian and Remote Mowing.

As Spring arrives, we look forward to another busy and productive season, highlighting the best the industry has to offer and the massive contribution it makes to the UK day in and day out.

New Grounds Management Framework launched by The GMA

The Grounds Management Association (GMA) has officially launched the Grounds Management Framework (GMF).

To support the sporting industry in better understanding how to maintain natural turf sports surfaces to the best possible level, as well as presenting grounds management as a viable career path, the GMA has developed the GMF, a set of standards for natural turf sports surfaces. With the quality of playing surfaces directly impacting the standard, and amount, of sport played on them, the GMF shines a spotlight on the importance of grounds management to sport. It does so in a way that is simple to understand for people outside of the industry, like club chairmen

and directors. Developed by the GMA and experienced Sports Consultant, Tim Nicholls, the GMF combines long-standing Performance Quality Standards with relevant skills and knowledge.

Backed by National-Governing Bodies, the easy-to-use framework will determine whether users are at a ‘basic’, ‘good’, ‘advanced’, ‘high’, or ‘elite’ level and will ensure that those responsible for pitches are aware of the characteristics, resources, skills and knowledge required for their playing surface, and how to progress to the next level. The framework is already in use on the Football Foundation’s revolutionary web app, PitchPower, in addition to the GMA’s training programmes,

Golf industry publishes 2023 salary guidelines

The Committee for Golf Club Salaries has provided an update regarding its guidance for staff remuneration levels across the golf industry in 2023.

Under normal circumstances, on an annual basis the Committee for Golf Club Salaries (CGCS) would agree on a recommended percentage uplift on salaries for all Golf Club employees.

Unfortunately, due to the turbulent economic climate throughout 2022 and continuing into 2023, the committee has not been able to reach agreement on a specific recommendation on salaries or annual increases.

Sufficient members of the committee believe that for this year any salary decisions must be a decision made individually by clubs considering the circumstances they find themselves in.

The committee firmly believes that golf club employees are critical to the health of the sport and of individual facilities and would urge clubs to award appropriate salary increases where they can, taking into account cost of living issues and the financial outlook for the facility.

BIGGA understands the challenges the CGCS has faced in reaching a recommendation and welcomes the message that clubs recognise the value of their staff and recompenses them appropriately within the economic means of the individual business. Throughout the recent boom in golfer participation numbers and beyond, golf greenkeepers have excelled in their commitment to sustaining the golf industry by producing outstanding playing conditions, despite the tough times society has navigated.

where courses and qualifications have been aligned to the levels of the GMF.

GMA CEO, Geoff Webb says: “The Grounds Management Framework has been in development for a long time and has been a big focus for us as an organisation, so it’s great to finally see it launched officially. The grounds management industry already employs around 26,000 people, with over 37,000 part-time volunteers, but more are needed if we are to keep up with the demand for sport. We need 1000 people a year to join our sector to keep up with demand, but we know that, with improved surfaces, almost 2 million more children will benefit. Our work is focused on getting the best for the industry

and highlighting the hard work, knowledge and skill that goes into making sport possible – this framework will make it clearer for people inside and outside of the industry, from club chairman to stadium managers, to understand what it takes to prepare playing surfaces at all levels and will better support matching training and experience to quality of playing surfaces.”

The Grounds Management Framework is free-to-use and is targeted at grounds staff, grounds managers, club committees, and senior management at all levels including community clubs, local authorities, education, and professional sports clubs.

Grounds Management Association Enquiry 5

Key parts of the CGCS offering are the Salary Calculators, which are provided at www.golfclubsalaries.org.uk.

In order for these calculators to remain valuable and relevant, they must keep pace with general wage inflation. Therefore, the three salary calculators relating to greenkeeping roles – Course Manager/Head Greenkeeper, Deputy Course Manager/Deputy Head Greenkeeper and Assistant Greenkeeper – have had an increase to their baseline salaries of 6%. This figure is reflective of salary increases across the economy.

During 2023, BIGGA will continue to work with the CGCS to refine the calculators and to consider adding further calculators for other roles within greenkeeping teams, such as Equipment Manager, Greenkeeper/Mechanic and Senior Assistant Greenkeeper.

In order to assist golf clubs in their decision-making process for salary increases in the immediate future, it is recommended that golf club boards and committees refer to the latest Consumer Price Inflation reports, which can be found on the ONS website.

BIGGA continues to work with our colleagues at the Golf Club Managers Association, PGA and the Home Unions about salary recommendations for the collective workforce of golf clubs in the UK.

Hundreds of brands commit to GroundsFest

Over 100 exhibitors have booked to attend GroundsFest 2023 with more confirming their presence each week.

The event, which is the talk of the industry, will be held at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire on 20 and 21 September 2023.

Over 9,000 square metres of space has already been taken by a wide range of exhibitors with over 75% of allocated space accounted for as the event continues to grow.

These impressive figures are testament to just how well the show has been received by the industry. Close to 5,000 visitors, which includes grounds staff, greenkeepers, landscapers, local authorities, estate managers and contractors, have already

signalled their intention to attend by registering for the GroundsFest visitor newsletter.

Attendees can expect to see hundreds of brands at the event. Some of the latest names to confirm their presence at GroundsFest include Honda, STIHL, AMS Robotics, The Pitchmark Group, KAR UK, Wicksteed Leisure, ICL, Dennis & SISIS, Shelton Sportsturf Drainage, Origin Amenity, Kress UK, EGO, Makita, Greenbest, Soil Scout, Karcher UK, Foley Grinders, RT Machinery and Etesia UK.

Commenting on Etesia UK’s decision to exhibit at GroundsFest, Managing Director Les Malin, said: “I believe GroundsFest could be exactly what the groundscare industry

needs in terms of trade shows. We have all been attending the same existing shows which have not changed for several years. Therefore, I think we should all be looking forward to something different. There is no such thing as too many shows in my opinion; it is more about having events that work for individual companies. We are all different, but we all want to give our customers the chance to experience something new and exciting. GroundsFest will offer exactly this.”

The indoor halls and outside areas of GroundsFest will not only feature hundreds of exhibitors and products in action, but it will also include a free-to-attend LANTRA accredited education programme, free practical training sessions, the largest retail area ever to be seen

at a groundscare event, a dedicated landscaping zone, a music festival and much more. Commenting on the event’s promising start, GroundsFest’s Event Director Christopher Bassett, said:

“GroundsFest continues to grow, and the sales team are receiving new enquiries every week. We have also been upbeat about how much interest we are receiving from visitors. There promises

to be a diverse visitor profile at GroundsFest this year and we can’t wait to see the magic unfold in September.”

TPC Sawgrass Volunteer Programme open for applications

Applications are now open for the 2024 John Deere TPC Sawgrass Volunteer Programme, which will see seven British and Irish greenkeepers travel to Florida to help prepare the world-famous Stadium Course for the best golfers on the planet. The volunteers are chosen from each of BIGGA’s five regions, in addition to an international member, and one GSCAI member from Ireland. They will join the TPC Sawgrass maintenance and agronomy team in the build-up to The Players Championship from 9-19 March 2024.

With all travel, accommodation and uniform costs covered by John Deere as part of its BIGGA Premium Partner relationship, volunteers will be fully integrated into the TPC Sawgrass pretournament team – an opportunity that may see them mowing the first

tee before play starts, preparing the iconic 17th hole, or raking the bunkers as play gets underway.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for any greenkeeper,” says Chris Meacock, John Deere’s Division Sales Manager for Golf and Turf. “Going to volunteer at TPC Sawgrass presents a fantastic opportunity for you to expand your knowledge and experience, and you’ll meet many like-minded professional greenkeepers from across the globe.” The application process is open to all full BIGGA members over the age of 21, who have been a full member for at least 12 months.

The deadline for applications is 31 May 2023, and you can fill in your application online at the BIGGA website now.

Uncertain times set to favour construction equipment rental market

The UK construction equipment rental market was impacted by the cessation of construction work during lockdown in 2020, but its overall decline for that year was much less than experienced across construction as a whole.

Contrary to this, in 2021 there was a healthy growth across the UK construction equipment rental market which continued throughout 2022 as built-up demand boosted the construction market.

Statistics show a 6.8% increase in market value from 2020. The recovery of the market in 2021 was aided by government stimulus to accelerate infrastructure and housing projects.

Director of AMA Research, Laura Pardoe, said: “It’s in uncertain times that the hire sector comes into its own. We can see how true this was during 2020 when the hire sector serviced emergency requirements for temporary facilities and new approaches to enable social distancing though offering welfare, accommodation, marquee, and traffic management solutions, among much more.

“We will see it too in the months to come when economic uncertainty is likely to favour ‘hire’ over ‘buy’ decisions as contractors need to fulfil requirements in ever-changing conditions with ever-increasing costs.”

A cost-effective grass care solution

The 40” Grass Care System comes with various interchangeable attachments, from corers, slitters, aerators, rollers and more. This costeffective solution allows you to care for your grass in numerous ways, all in one machine.

The heavy-duty aerator features ten heavy-duty aeration discs on a solid steel axle and is an ideal tool for breaking down the surface pan of grassed

areas. The two 25-litre ballast containers supplied with the carrying frame provide additional weight to help penetrate hard surfaces.

The main reason for aerating is to alleviate soil compaction, as compacted soil prevents the circulation of air, water and nutrients within the soil. With the help of an aerator, roots grow deeper to produce a stronger, more vigorous lawn.

The slitter and hollow tine corer attachments can be used to help circulate air, water and nutrients within the soil; however, they do not break up the soil to the same extent as the specially shaped aerator stars.

SCH manufacture a variety of additional attachments, as well as a 36”, 48” and 60” version of their Grass Care System.

STIHL launches first backpack cordless blower

STIHL has launched its first cordless backpack blower for professional users, offering high performance and a significantly less disruptive sound thanks to its innovative STIHL Noise Reduction System.

With a maximum blowing force of 26 newton, STIHL’s new BGA 300 cordless backpack blower is the most powerful in the STIHL cordless range and features a high air speed to ensure even wet, heavy autumn leaves can be cleared quickly and efficiently. The new cordless blower is powered using STIHL’s professional AP System AR 2000 L or AR 3000 L backpack batteries.

Thanks to the STIHL Noise Reduction System, the BGA

300 produces fewer high pitch frequencies often associated with cordless blowers, meaning operation is much more pleasant and less intrusive for bystanders. Thanks to this, the BGA 300 is well suited for use in noisesensitive areas such as schools, parks or around public amenities.

The maximum blowing force can be selected from three power setting options via the selector switch, allowing for efficient energy management and longer runtimes. Boost mode may also be selected to provide maximum power for the toughest clearing jobs. Furthermore, the new cordless blower features an LED power display and cruise control function to enable simple energy management and comfort. For the optimum blowing angle, the

BGA 300 boasts a curved nozzle as standard, and the blower tube length can easily be adjusted to meet different requirements and operating situations. A straight nozzle is also available as an accessory.

The BGA 300 is exceptionally easy to handle thanks to its slim design and comfortable carrying system that optimally distributes the weight of the backpack device and reduces the strain on the user when used for long periods.

Other features include wide feet for secure footing whilst on the ground, a hook for the blower tube for easy transport and storage, as well as compatibility with the Smart Connector 2 A.

External porcelain tile pointing is easy with GftK

The owners and their architect selected top quality porcelain tiles for this pool terrace, but they wanted to be sure the pointing would not discolour or stain the expensive tiles, and that the grout was durable, especially for use in the narrow >3mm joints between these larger format porcelain pavers.

MAKES LIGHT WORK OF AERATING

In order to cope with the larger aerators required we needed a more powerful tractor so we went out to the market for three demonstrations and quotes. The TG6507 IQ with has a high lift capacity of 1,580kg, tight turning circle and auto pick up hitch.

“Another brilliant feature is the headland management system that can be set to automatically disengage the PTO on lifting and re-engage when lowering, making turning at the end of runs so simple. This makes such a difference when aerating large areas and numerous runs. All these features and then, most importantly, the comfortable air con cab means the staff have no problems working with this machine for long periods of time!

The purchase of our ISEKI TG6507 IQ was an obvious choice.”

www.iseki.co.uk

They had seen other quality porcelain terraces that were effectively ruined by poor quality pointing, including cement based ceramic mortars/grouts that left a lot of residue and also soon picked up staining from spillages, or by using ‘brush-in resin’ grouts that blew out after just a few jet-washes, which are essential to keep external porcelain in pristine condition.

Online they found GftK’s vdw 815+ Paving Joint Mortar from NCC Streetscape, which is ideal for narrow joints and porcelain, plus non-staining and highly resistant to jet washing.

GftK’s vdw 815+ is unique and ‘state of the art’, 2-part epoxy resin and purpose designed for narrow joints.

Application is quick and easy by wet-slurry application, which means no waiting for dry weather to prepare, grout, cure and open the area. The grout then cures rapidly and is highly durable, plus it looks great with top quality porcelain.

They flow easily across the porcelain surfaces and effectively self-compact into the joints - You can’t use too much water at this time! - After a few minutes, any excess water and mortar is easily removed with a soft coconut fibre brush and a final rinse = Job Done!

With GftK there is: No waiting for the bed to fully cure – No waiting for the weather - No measuring components - No water addition - No concerns over wet joints - No waiting to clean up - No washboy - No haze - No efflorescence!

GftK’s 2-part, epoxy resin based paving joint mortars are fast and easy to install, including in cold and wet weather conditions. Contract surface care covered with ECOPROTEC

Developed for the landscape sector, the ECOPROTEC range includes best-selling surface treatments for all types of tile and stone.

A new updated website - at www.ecoprotec.co.uk – presents the exterior range as a separate category from ECOPROTEC interior treatments and includes a comprehensive library of supporting technical resources for the landscaper and contractor.

With over 30 years’ experience in the tile and stone market, LTP’s ECOPROTEC brand has become established within the

contract sector since its launch in 2016. All treatments are made in the UK, are predominately ecofriendly, low odour and low VOC, and the entire range benefits from the most advanced research in water-based technology.

The exterior range includes sealing and protection, cleaning and restoration, and aftercare treatments designed for all types of polished and unpolished natural and artificial stone, porcelain, ceramic, concrete, masonry and terrazzo. All treatments are offered with support and expert advice from LTP’s technical

The combined approach of soil de-compaction and injection of biochar and natural bio-stimulants using the Vogt Geo-Injector has many long-term benefits for trees, particularly in urban environments where soil compaction and limited rooting areas can lead to stress and poor health.

When soil is compacted, it becomes difficult for water and nutrients to penetrate, leading to reduced root growth and limiting the tree’s ability to uptake essential nutrients. As a result, the tree becomes more vulnerable to pests and diseases, reducing its overall health and lifespan.

However, by de-compacting the soil and injecting bio-stimulants, the soil structure improves, creating a more favourable environment for mycorrhizal fungi to establish, leading to improved root systems and better nutrient uptake.

One of the most significant benefits of this treatment is the reduction of pest attacks. By improving the tree’s defence system, the tree is less vulnerable to pests and diseases. Additionally, the thick and green leaves and increased

crown density are clear signs of a healthy tree that can withstand environmental stresses.

In conclusion, the combined approach of soil de-compaction and injection of natural biostimulants including biochar is an effective way to enhance tree health and longevity, particularly in urban environments where soil

compaction and limited rooting areas can lead to poor health.

This treatment has long-term benefits, including improved root systems, better water and nutrient uptake, and increased resistance to pests and diseases.

The successful way to grout porcelain tile paving

The key to successfully grouting the joints of external porcelain paving is to use an equally highperformance jointing material.

Why would you buy expensive, high performance, dense paving, but then use the cheapest grout, highly porous grout, grout that produces a difficult to clean cement haze, or grout that is not able to withstand frequent jet washing?

External porcelain paving grout should be easy to apply, easy to clean and remove residual grout from the surface with no haze

or efflorescence, plus one that then hardens quickly to a tough durable, shrink-free material, which is highly stain resistant and most importantly, can be repeatedly jet-washed to enable porcelain surfaces to be kept clean

The best solution for porcelain paving jointing today is not an internal tile grout, nor a cement mortar, but a high performance, 2-part, epoxy resin bound, graded fine alluvial sand based jointing system. ICL helps the Rhinos through busiest ever year

Ryan Golding, Head

Groundsperson for Leeds

Rhinos, claims that a range of ICL products has helped the club to successfully navigate the busiest year on record.

He may have been at the club for nearly two decades, but Ryan has just witnessed the busiest ever year, in terms of pitch usage, at Headingley Stadium. In addition to the multitude of standard games and events, Headingley was also the most used pitch at the Rugby League World Cup last year.

With such heavy usage, Ryan explained how he and his three members of staff quite often have to go against the agronomical rule book and push the boundaries.

“We are one of the most highly used surfaces in professional sport and so we have to do things a little differently at times,” he said. “For example, we may need to apply a conventional fertiliser just before the snow comes because we need cover. There will also be times when we need to apply products in what might normally be considered to be less than ideal conditions. Unfortunately, with the time scales involved, we have to complete tasks whenever we can.”

Ryan knows that using the correct products is key to success. “The response, quality, longevity, and variety of ICL products has allowed us to push our usage and quality of surface, as well as allowing us flexibility

Start spring the Suståne way

In the pursuit of rapid root development, superior growth and ongoing plant protection from drought, pathogens and stress factors, Bolster Granular 4-4-4 + 3Fe has proven itself to be the perfect partner for recovery from spring renovations.

Ideal for application following aeration, hollow coring or tining to incorporate the product into the profile, Bolster Granular forms part of a collection of soil builders and spring starters from Suståne - the world’s most comprehensively researched organic fertiliser range.

Bolster Granular 4-4-4 + Iron provides a formulation of organic nutrients, beneficial microbiology, plant biostimulants and a powerful blend of mycorrhizae to promote greater root access to soil nutrients and water.

The addition of 3% chelated iron enhances colour and rapid root development, while seaweed extract, humic acid and compostbased microorganisms deliver plant health and strength for all turf grass situations including fine turf and golf green renovations.

Derived from biologically stable ingredients and containing both water soluble and slow-release sources of nitrogen, Bolster Granular has a near-neutral pH level, low salt index and low ammonium nitrogen percentage so can be safely applied without risk of burn or discolouration. Following quick green-up, even growth and performance can be expected for six to eight weeks.

Specifically for greens, tees and low-cut fairways, Suståne 10-1-4 granular is a spring turf starter, rich in quick-release water-soluble nitrogen for fast

uptake and green up when soil temperatures are cooler than optimal.

75% of the total nitrogen being water soluble means nutrients are readily available, while the renowned Suståne organic base carrier will help to build up carbohydrate reserves in the soil for increased plant metabolism and supply all essential elements necessary for enhanced photosynthesis during the crucial early part of the season.

Thanks to the N in 10-1-14 granular being in ammonium sulphate form, this is also known to lower soil pH and thereby aid in suppressing certain types of turf grass diseases and - as with Bolster - 10-1-14 will not cause fertiliser ‘burn’ or seedling stress.

Suståne Enquiry 26

in the types of events that we can host.” Ryan loosely follows an ICL integrated turf management programme but due to the unique situation at Headingley, he takes a somewhat relative approach as to when he applies products.

He pin-pointed three ICL products which have made a significant impact in the past year.

“ProTurf 15-5-15 (a controlled release fertiliser) always provides us with a good base. The longevity we get from the feed, and the colour and the response are firstclass. It also gives us the room to apply a conventional whenever we need it.

“That’s where the Sportsmaster NK 12.0.9+Fe (a phosphate free compound fertiliser) comes in. It’s an old-school product, which I like, and the response we get from it is rapid. The colour it provides is fantastic and it is an ideal product for match preparation or recovery. How often we apply it really depends on the pitch, but I like to think of it as giving an athlete who is very tired a can of Red Bull.

“We’ve also used H2Pro TriSmart wetting agent,” continued Ryan. “We’ve seen great results from it retaining the moisture and it has had a good effect on our root depth, especially in being able to manage movement of the moisture throughout the profile.”

TriCure Ad Granular eases greens through challenging conditions

Under the guidance of OAS Sales Manager Alex Hawkes, this has progressed to a full year-round programme – put into practice for the last four years.

“We have traditionally followed a primarily liquid regime” Peter explains, “applied monthly in and around the busy course and available weather windows, and working with the labour resources available.”

Why enriched biochar is beneficial for soils

It utilises DG-Lite, dispersible granular technology as a carrier to quickly release the chemistry with no residue left after normal irrigation.

It also does not contain any of the ingredients commonly associated with phytotoxicity or scorch meaning it can be safely applied in the morning and watered-in to activate the product in the evening without risk to the turf.

Carbon Gold’s enriched biochar products offer a revolutionary solution for promoting soil health and enhancing the growth of trees and plants.

Enriched biochar is not just a one-dimensional solution; it offers numerous benefits to the soil. The addition of enriched biochar to soil helps to break up compacted soil and improve water retention, creating a perfect growing environment for trees and plants. Furthermore, the enhanced porosity of the soil ensures optimal air circulation and moisture control, which are essential for healthy plant growth.

who want to ensure the healthy growth and development of trees and plants should consider using Carbon Gold’s enriched biochar products. By incorporating enriched biochar, landscapers can rest assured that they are providing their projects with the necessary resources for optimal growth and flourishing.

Nestled between the Yorkshire Dales and Lakeland Fells, Casterton Golf Club in South Cumbria has undergone radical expansion in recent years under the guidance of Owner and Head Greenkeeper Peter Makinson.

The underlying limestone rock provides excellent drainage, ensuring the course is playable year-round but poses a challenge to Peter and his team in their attempts to retain moisture and nutrients in the profile.

That’s where his feeding programme from Origin Amenity Solutions (OAS) comes in – with particular successes seen last year in switching from spot treatments to broader applications of TriCure Ad Granular.

Peter has used products from the OAS portfolio, specifically the Headland brand, for the last 15 years.

“The TriCure Ad Granular product is easy to apply and for the last few seasons, we have been using it to target particularly problematic areas around the course with good results.”

However, with the prolonged period of hot and dry weather experienced last year, Peter extended his use to wider applications - providing some relief to their non-irrigated greens. “We started with an application at a rate of 24g/m2 at the beginning of the season with the plan to reapply every three months. However, we closely monitored the weather and could react by getting the spreader out, covering two to three greens per night, and watering it in using taps and hoses.”

TriCure Ad Granular product offers an effective solution in situations where spraying is not feasible.

“It’s easy to spread and breaks down well, with no pickup on the mowers afterwards” Peter adds.

“The beauty of being able to apply it as and when we needed it most meant we got through the challenging summer retaining adequate coverage and recovering quickly when the rain returned.”

Having demonstrated its effectiveness, Peter now plans to extend applications of TriCure Ad to the tees for the upcoming season.

“As we look for ways to manage the challenges that mother nature throws at us, knowing how this product works on our ground and the results we get with the resources we have available, it’s the next logical step.”

Unlike plain biochar, Carbon Gold’s products are infused with natural biology and beneficial bacteria, which work in tandem to counteract the issue of nutrient lockup. This unique blend of microorganisms not only unlocks the nutrients trapped within the biochar but also stimulates soil microbes, which in turn improves soil fertility and promotes healthy growth.

Carbon Gold’s enriched biochar products also help to sequester carbon in the soil, thereby mitigating the effects of climate change. With enriched biochar, the carbon is locked away in the soil for centuries, reducing atmospheric carbon levels and providing a sustainable solution for carbon capture and storage. Attraxor keeps Poa at bay at Kirkhill

Scott McKittrick, Course Manager at Kirkhill Golf Club, has revealed how Attraxor has helped him to suppress Poa annua and has resulted in the greens playing firm, true and fast.

“Our greens consist of approximately 60%-70% annual meadow-grass and because of this we would have to be aggressive with the turf,” he said. “We would double cut and roll, and it took a lot of time and labour.

“I spoke to Ramsay MacGregor (Amenity Specialist for Agrovista Amenity) and he told me a lot about a product which he believed to be brilliant at

supressing annual meadowgrass seed heads.” The product Ramsay introduced to Scott was Attraxor ® - a BASF product which has been shown to effectively regulate growth of managed amenity turf.

The active substance, Prohexadione, inhibits the gibberellic acid pathway, which results in a reduction of turf height and turf biomass. Furthermore, as well reducing clippings it also suppresses the seed heads of Poa annua.

Key advantages include:

• Attraxor is formulated for rapid foliar uptake –as quick as 4 hours from application.

In summary, Carbon Gold’s enriched biochar products offer a comprehensive solution for promoting soil health and enhancing the growth of trees and plants. With their unique blend of natural biology and beneficial bacteria, enriched biochar is the key to unlocking the full potential of soil.

• Superior performance against Poa annua pioneering.

• Attraxor can be used earlier or later in the season at cooler temperatures compared to other growth regulators.

• Consistent growth regulation of turf grass species.

• Root formation is also promoted through the use of Attraxor® whilst turf colour and quality are enhanced.

Scott initially applied Attraxor at the recommended minimum rate of 375 g/ha and was instantly impressed.

The right paving for the right drainage systems

Since 2011, there has been a rise in the popularity of resin bound, due to the environmental requirement of Sustainable urban Drainage Systems for managing water runoff to prevent flooding.

If the surface requires differentiation or inclusion of a design element adaptability and ease of application have made resin bound paving the choice for a variety of different types of sites; from custom features forming the centrepiece to prestigious landscaping or housing development project; to more extensive areas of hard surfacing on pathways, tree pits, pool surrounds,

driveways, access roads and car parks.

Normally resin bound is specified to be laid on a sound asphalt or concrete base, which acts as a structural layer with sufficient strength for its intended use. Some resin bound materials can be installed on other bases (speak to supplier), if circumstances dictate that a traditional base is not appropriate or possible, by increasing the depth of resin bound and using a base alternative like SureCell - a 100% recycled plastic grid structure, is another consideration. Lastly, look for a supplier that offers a substantial guarantee, which

doesn’t diminish over time and find out if maintenance guides and technical support is provided post installation. Many established suppliers will be recognised by organisations such as BALI and NBS Source or adhere to national quality standards such a BBA and ISO 9001.

SureSet Resin Systems have over 26 years knowledge and experience in the resin bound industry, proven to supply a superior paving product with a trusted installation service backed by a 21 Year Guarantee.

Terrain Aeration injects polymer

Increasingly, year on year, we are seeing the effects of global warming across our landscape as droughts persist.

Ground becomes hard and compacted to considerable depth and when the rains do come, this often leads to standing surface water and waterlogging.

Terrain Aeration has specialised in one-metre deep soil aeration to relieve compaction, panning, and waterlogging nationally for over thirty years.

It’s a problem addressed by the same machine, Terrain Aeration’s Terralift system, that aerates the soil at depth by releasing compressed air via its one-metre depth probe.

As that fragments the soil to create fissures and cracks to

allow drainage and aeration, the probe can also inject waterstoring polymer.

Once in place, the polymer will expand one-hundred fold with rainwater or irrigation water which it stores for the turf or tree roots to take up as needed. It’s a one-way system, so the polymer does not take water from the roots.

In this way, we will be able to make better use of what water we have and it’s a very long-term process as the polymer takes a long time to degrade. Spreading the polymer on the surface is not practical, as when it rains it turns into a gel, making the area dangerous to walk and play on.

Injecting it into the ground using the Terralift machine offers the best, most beneficial, and wholly

cost-effective method, says the company.

Terrain Aeration is the only operator of the Terralift in the UK and the treatment has proven itself since 1985.

There are different versions of the machine to treat large open spaces such as sports grounds, golf courses, and avenues of trees to narrow accesses onto bowling greens and gardens.

New course’s water management in best possible hands

Ingestre Park Golf Club has relied heavily upon distributor Reesink Hydro-Scapes’s range of products as it created 12 new and upgraded six existing holes at its course in Staffordshire, with Toro providing the irrigation and Otterbine the lake aerating fountains for the project.

440 Toro Flex sprinklers were used for the greens, approaches and fairways and 159 T5 sprinklers on the tees, all of which are controlled by the Toro Lynx central control system with Lynx Smart modules. Five Otterbine Concept 3 lake aerating fountains keep the water of three lakes clean and clear and make a striking attraction.

International Design Group and MJ Abbott Ltd designed the course with Phil Helmn,

as the golf course advisor, responsible for ensuring the project was carried out meeting the time frame of the planners. Here Phil explains the process: “When Ingestre Park Golf Club learned the proposed path of a new high-speed train was going to go through the course eight years ago, it took this as an opportunity to thrive. Excellent choices were made in selecting the right partners and the right tender plans.

“The bid included Toro irrigation in a one, not three, row formation with a couple of landing zones. The Lynx central control system really came into its own in the growing in phase. The ground must always be kept damp with water being applied every two hours for two minutes.

“If there were weather changes Lynx alerted us and application tweaks could be made - even from a sunlounger in Cyprus at one point! The level of detail and intuitive control Lynx provides is what’s needed when it comes to the application of water especially at this delicate stage and for safeguarding this commodity.”

Speaking of safeguarding water, Otterbine plays a role in this too, says Phil: “We were conscious of being set up to be as self-reliant as possible and know that everything has been done to harvest water. The site is very wet, and we needed a robust drainage system. Now we have a system that collects water into three lakes, all of which are interconnected, with Concept 3 aeration units installed from

Toro B Series for invisible in-field irrigation

As the football season finishes and pitch renovations begin, Reesink Hydro-Scapes is reminding customers that Toro’s B series sprinkler system with Turf Cup is the best in the league when it comes to invisible in-field irrigation.

The combination of Toro’s B series and Turf Cup is irrigation uniformity, player safety, best pitch playability and the ultimate in field aesthetics. Here Robert Jackson, division manager from Reesink HydroScapes, explains why.

“Elevating turf quality with the right irrigation shouldn’t interfere with the usability of the pitch, it should go virtually unnoticed by groundsmen, spectators and

most importantly the players,” he says. “Toro’s B Series with the addition of the Turf Cup is the perfect pairing.”

So why is that? With Toro B series sprinklers, the volume can be easily altered to meet the exact requirements of the pitch with a large nozzle selection for accurate watering.

This level of control and headto-head coverage comes from the full-circle configuration designed to deliver regardless of the weather and without the need for disassembly or additional parts.

Robert continues: “Toro sprinklers are widely regarded to be some of the best in the business for providing accurate water application.

Otterbine to keep the water good for irrigating. We’ve also got a borehole to top up when needed and all this allows us to stay off the main water supply as much as possible.”

Now that the growing phase is over, Phil and the team continue to rely on the remote easy access accuracy of Toro’s Lynx, as Phil explains: “We irrigate at night or early in the morning and it’s so easy to control this should weather circumstances change from the time of pre-set. When you consider the warmer temperatures of the last few years and the prediction this will continue, to know our new course is in the best possible hands with the technology of Toro and Otterbine is particularly reassuring.”

Planning for sustainable drainage crucial

“Add the Turf Cup you get an invisible solution for irrigating pitches.”

Built to withstand the tough environment of the typical UK sports field, the Turf Cup, designed and available exclusively from Reesink Hydro-Scapes, has been tested to ensure the highest levels of reliability and durability demanded by the market today.

The flexible rubber compound of the Turf Cup means grass grows in the cup on top of the sprinkler to create a continuous area of uninterrupted turf.

To guarantee the slickest passing and streamlined movement of the ball on an accurately watered pitch in the season ahead, Toro irrigation

Following the government’s announcement to make sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) mandatory across England, ACO Water Management is supporting urban planners, architects and civil engineers to embed sustainable drainage into their designs.

SuDS will become a legal requirement in 2024 after a recent government review. Making SuDS a necessary obligation aims to help further reduce surface water flooding and water pollution, and lower the pressure on sewerage systems that often get overwhelmed in heavy rainfall events.

Regulations and processes are currently being established but SuDS are expected to be compulsory for any new development, building or structure over 100sqm. It is anticipated that SuDS plans will need to be submitted to SuDS Approvals Bodies (SABs), which will fall under the Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA).

Sam Hawkins, National Specification Manager at ACO,

said: “This rule change by the government is a welcome one and will help to address the challenges we’ve seen recently with flooding. More importantly, mandatory SuDS will ensure we can start to mitigate the effects of climate change, biodiversity loss and habitat fragmentation.

“It is great to see the government acknowledging the difference SuDS can make and taking the necessary steps to protect properties and natural habitats. There is much work to do, so it’s vital that water management suppliers assist in the journey.

“We encourage all key stakeholders to come to us if they have questions in creating sustainable drainage systems, and at ACO, we have an entire portfolio of drainage and water management solutions to assist in any scheme. Alongside this, engineers can access our free-touse tools like our QuAD design software, and our colleagues are on hand to ensure we can provide the support required.”

Dripline check valve technology

The Rain Bird XFS-CV Dripline irrigation system features a heavyduty 0.3 bar check valve. This practical and water saving feature makes it suitable for installation in landscapes with slopes as either a sub-surface or on-surface solution. Dripline can, of course, also be used on level gradients.

The check valve, with its silicon pressure regulating diaphragm, features in every emitter and keeps the Dripline charged with water in elevation changes of up

to three metres. It can therefore be used in installations where other drip irrigation technology will not work. By keeping water in the XFS-CV Dripline at all times, it is conserved within the system and there is no need to refill everytime a new watering cycle takes place. With the check valve, puddling and the risk of oversaturated soil at the lowest point in the irrigation zone are also prevented.

Biotecture living walls bring benefits to Wilmott Dixon Interiors

Biotecture has designed and installed an impressive series of living walls at the newly refurbished headquarters for Willmott Dixon Interiors in Farringdon, London.

Wilmott Dixon Interiors is an interior fit-out and design specialist and one of the UK’s largest construction and property companies. In 2022 the company relocated into a

new purpose designed space in Farringdon. As part of the move, the Wilmott Dixon design team created a modern, open plan working environment that promotes some of the highest

standards in energy efficiency and flexible working.

Sustainability and biophilic design were also key priorities right from the start because we all have an innate connection to nature, yet we spend 90% of our time indoors.

Multiple studies have shown that bringing more plants inside provides a plethora of benefits, from improving air quality, to increasing creativity and productivity. The result is happier staff and better retention rates.

The Biotecture living walls proved to be a space efficient way to bring more plants into the Wilmott Dixon Interiors offices.

Working with the design team, Biotecture designed and installed the green wall near an amphitheatre, at the heart of the space.

This enables people to benefit from improved air quality, better

acoustics and enhanced wellbeing when entering the office.

Biotecture’s living wall at the Bailey was constructed using PlantBox, a cleverly simple modular, stackable living wall system that is manufactured in the UK using 100% recycled materials. It is a free standing system and only requires restraint fixings which means that there is no structural loading.

Richard Sabin, Managing Director at Biotecture, said: “Our extensive experience in the living wall sector allowed us to guide and manage The Bailey project from conception through implementation and installation. This enabled us to meet all the project criteria set out by Wilmott Dixon Interiors around biophilic design and budget requirements.”

He added: “Wilmott Dixon Interiors is a forward thinking company that understands the benefits of people being close to nature.”

The Biotecture living walls at The Bailey were installed over six days. The PlantBox troughs were planted up on site with high quality internal plants then stacked together.

Being simple to maintain and easy watering was an important consideration for Wilmott Dixon Interiors. Biotecture PlantBox Flourish units include a water reservoir at the base and a re-circulating pump to irrigate the living wall plants. The automatic tap timers are set to irrigation once a week, meaning it is easy to keep the plants in optimum condition.

A robust mix of indoor plants were selected by Biotecture including ferns, Peace lilies, and tropical plants. These were chosen for their aesthetic appeal as well as their ability to improve air quality and attenuate sound in the open plan space.

Inclusive play area completed by Proludic

Lambeth Council identified a need to provide a fully inclusive playground for children living in the locality of Clapham Common.

Existing play provisions in the area did not meet the needs of all users. Lambeth aspired to design an inclusive play area that would achieve a PiPA (Plan Inclusive Play Areas) gold award recognising a fully inclusive facility.

Following a tender process, Proludic was awarded the contract and undertook detailed design work on this 1400meter square space to deliver a playground where children and families could play together. Our zonal design included 45 pieces of inclusive play equipment and was submitted to be subject to an independent PiPA assessment where the highest gold award was achieved.

The friends of Clapham Common group and local councillors were

also involved throughout the process to ensure the final facility met the needs and expectations of the community and the end users of the space. The design focused on a woodland journey, which ensures children can experience play at their level across the site.

A range of multiplay units offers different challenges and children can play independently dependent on their ability supported by easy access ramps on one unit. A sensory path runs through the site and play zones lead directly from this route which was designed to support role-play, sensory exploration, and educational input with boards and panels. A range of swings offers appropriate support and engagement for all.

A continuous colourful wetpour surface is laid throughout the site providing visual stimulation and ease of access throughout. Seating and picnic tables are provided on the outskirts of the

space ideal for a breather or for parents and carers to look on in comfort.

Caroline Streeks, Project Manager, London Borough of Lambeth, said: “Lambeth Council issued a tender seeking a contractor to deliver a unique, inclusive play area to replace the old playground on Windmill Drive on Clapham Common. The aspiration was to deliver a play area that achieved a Gold PiPA award, the first in Lambeth.

“Proludic was appointed to undertake the design and implementation of the project. We have been delighted with the outcome; we have provided a safe and inclusive play space that meets the play needs of a wide range of children addressing disabilities ensuring there are no longer any barriers to play in this wonderful play area.”

Royal Norwich looks to the future with Huxley Golf

Royal Norwich’s 2019 reincarnation has created a golfing environment like no other.

Born out of a 350-acre, 400-yearold parkland course, its clever new course designs and outstanding facilities are providing an inclusive, progressive place for the whole community to relish well into the future.

Huxley Golf is proud to have been involved in its transformation.

Neil Lythgoe, Director of Golf at Royal Norwich, explains: “We’re working to create a completely different experience here at

Royal Norwich, one which is welcoming to established golfers, new golfers and nongolfers alike.

“Central to this ethos is embracing inventiveness but with an absolute focus on quality. To my mind, Huxley Golf surfaces embody this approach.”

In 2021, Royal Norwich asked Huxley Golf to supply 6ft x 6ft (1.8m x 1.8m) tees for its par 3, 6- hole course to make the most of a short course’s enormous potential to attract newcomers and juniors to the game.

Formulating fertilisers since 1998

Recognising the need to offer year-round play and the impact that this would have in terms of wear and tear in a small, frequently-used space, Huxley Golf’s premium all-weather surface was the optimal solution.

Critically, specifying Huxley surfaces also supported the Club’s direction to construct its short course to the same high standard as its 18-hole championship course.

Neil Lythgoe commented: “Managing environmental challenges and the customer

experience is a hard balance to strike. When you’re working to maintain playability and quality and there’s no room for alternative tees, you need to consider all-weather surfaces to spread the wear – they’re clearly the future.

“My view is that all-weather surfaces have a definite role in the future of golf in this country and that Huxley Golf is the only option worth considering.”

Building on the hugely positive reception to the short course (the Royal Norwich Junior

Academy now has over 100 students), the Club returned to Huxley Golf for its practice area. Working with Premier Tee Turf once more, the new 56ft x 6ft (17m x 1.8m) practice tee was installed locally by members Mark Burton and Julian Poole, with expert guidance from Huxley to guarantee the end result.

The Huxley name has been synonymous with premium all-weather golf surfaces and products.

Guernsey States Works switch to TinyLineMarker Pro X for their line marking jobs

Richard Langmead manages the Land Management section of States Works, where the team carry out grounds maintenance predominantly for States of Guernsey local Government which includes maintaining school grounds, parks and gardens, social housing, coastal areas, and cliff paths, as well as health properties including the main hospital.

Richard comments, “The primary use for the line marker will be to mark out sports pitches on our education sites. We will also be offering a service to other sports clubs on the island.

“My team used to mark out by hand using a manual line marking machine but this is time consuming and as our workload has grown so has the requirement for us to be faster and more efficient.

“I decided to purchase the TinyLineMarker Pro X robot for many reasons but mainly the efficiencies the robot will give us.”

Tiny Mobile Robots is marketed and distributed exclusively in the UK by Origin Amenity Solutions which brings together four leading industry names - Headland Amenity, Rigby Taylor, TurfKeeper.com and Symbio.

Packed with a range of brandnew innovative features, the TinyLineMarker Pro X is an exciting new GPS robot designed to make line marking projects as streamlined and effortless as possible.

Richard adds, “As a business we were looking at ways to do tasks more efficiently and are always looking at technology to try and help with this. We came across the TinyLineMarker Pro X on the internet.

“The potential cost savings on labour and the ability to have a pitch marking service that we could offer to other sports clubs on the island did appeal and fitted in with our business plans.”

“We have only just started using the robot, but it has already made the initial marking of the pitches much more efficient, and we certainly expect to see the savings in labour costs going forward.”

The TinyLineMarker Pro X easily manages line marking from start to finish, whether it’s initial marking or overmarking. The robot runs on the ultrareliable RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) network which means it doesn’t need a base station like some robots use.

The robot will mark or remark the pitch in the correct location every time, even if previous lines have disappeared. Once set up it incredibly simple to use and very reliable.

The Pro X has over 200 customisable pitch templates which include sports pitches, athletic tracks, and parking.

“The ability to quickly and accurately mark out various pitch templates is a fantastic benefit to us.” Richard adds.

A popular new feature of the TinyLineMarker Pro X is the multi-select tool and Richard agrees that it gives a “noticeable time saving.”

This tool gives users the ability to queue up multiple pitches to be marked out in a specific order of their choosing. The robot will then mark out the designated areas without having to recalibrate the robot each time.

To help avoid problems, the robot displays the route it will take to mark out all queued pitches, so the user can ensure that the path is clear of obstructions for a seamless line marking project.

As a part of this feature, the robot also gives an estimated time of completion as well as the distance to drive so users know when they can expect their project to be completed.

Working hand in hand with the Multi-Select Tool, the Low Paint Alert feature ensures no time is wasted due to running low on paint when sending the Pro X off to mark multiple pitches in succession. When the robot is running low on paint, an automatic alert is sent to the user’s hand-held tablet notifying paint level is low.

In addition, the robot will also send an alert if there is blockage which is preventing the robot from marking. “A simple yet time saving feature that is going to be incredibly useful to us” comments Richard.”

“It means my team can carry out other jobs nearby while the robot does it thing, making us more productive and efficient. We don’t need to waste time monitoring the robot closely but are aware immediately when the paint is low, and we can top up before it runs out.”

The Origin Amenity Solutions team offer onsite training, maintenance, and general advice.

Richards concludes by saying, “The communication with Simon Hughes and Glen Howard from Origin Amenity Solutions has been excellent, from the initial inquiry, right through to the training once we had purchased the robot, technical support is only a phone call away which is reassuring.”

Free demonstrations are being offered across the UK.

Spring forward into maintenance

The latest equipment for pitch maintenance will help grounds managers achieve the higher standards that are in demand, reports Jane

Spring is the key season for maintenance tasks as the transition from winter to summer sports takes place. Multi-tasking machines mean that purchasers get more for their money and can extend work opportunities for contractors, while proven techniques continue to evolve, making for simpler, more efficient operation.

There’s a new name in the market this spring, although Bobcat is offering a wellestablished brand – the Ryan Turf range.

Part of the company’s new ground maintenance equipment (GME) range now available from the Bobcat network of authorised dealers, this expanded portfolio of turf machinery includes pedestrian aerators, power rakes and dethatchers, an overseeder and sod cutters. The Ryan Turf brand has been on the market for over 75 years and is very

well known amongst lawn care professionals in Europe and North America.

Lawnaire Aerators remove small plugs of thatch and soil to improve natural soil aeration, water and fertiliser uptake and to strengthen grass roots.

Ren-o-Thin power rakes are designed for efficient and effective dethatching. They offer simple height adjustment for fi ne-tuning the dethatching depth down to 6mm below ground level. Ren-o-Thin power rakes provide the option to use reels or cutting blades, without any tools plus an optional seed box for overseeding.

Built for heavy-duty renovation and verticutting, the selfpropelled Mataway Dethatcher covers up to 1700 m2/hour. Dethatching can go down up to 6mm below ground level with the use of fi ve exchangeable blade types.

The Mataway overseeder places seeds directly into soil slits for fast germination and good seedto-soil contact.

GKB Machines has launched the new Combi-Tool which gives turf managers the

option of conducting multiple operations such as slitting, raking, rolling and brushing in one quick and simple pass.

Four attachment slots on the three-point linkage frame can be tailored to the venue or the task to be conducted. Brush heads, rake tines, slitting tines, slitting discs and a range of rollers are available – with the option of equipping the Combi-Tool with multiple rows of the same attachment for a more intensive operation if required. Because of its multi-purpose functionality, the Combi-Tool is ideal for

multi-sport venues such as winter sport facilities, schools, local authorities and contractors.

The Combi-Tool is available in 1.6m and 2.0m working widths. Redexim has announced a trio of new machines for natural turf maintenance.

The new Rink DS1600 topdresser features improved functionality with allnew electronic controls. Accommodating spreading widths of between 2m and 14m, the DS1600 features a 1.6m 3 hopper.

A range of parameters including throw, belt speed and spreading thickness can all now be quickly and easily adjusted via new electronic controls accessible from the operator’s seat. Effi ciency can be further enhanced through an optional digital control unit which allows the operator to pre-set spreading rates for quick and consistent set-up. Four large tyres keep ground pressure to a minimum, making the DS1600 the versatile dresser for tasks throughout the season.

If access or cost implications are restricting the ability to topdress, then the newlyredesigned Multivator 1800 could provide the answer. Featuring a roller equipped with nine blades spaced at 200mm,

the Multivator decompacts and simultaneously lifts buried soil and rootzone material to the surface to provide a dressing.

Completing the operation in a single pass, the operator can also specify an additional front knife roller and optional rear brush to distribute the material for a play-ready finish.

Under the guidance of Redexim’s expert design team, the Blecavator will also be re-engineered and offered in two new widths during 2023. The Blecavator 145 (1.45m) and 210 (2.1m) models screen stones and debris and level the ground ready for the next stage of any grounds work project. A heavy-duty transmission ensures maximum power is

delivered to the rotor to handle all types of soil conditions, while the adjustable screening bar and rear roller leave a uniform finish.

The TriWave 60 and TriWave 45 represent a new breed of overseeder that can significantly increase the success of overseeding operations by up to 30%, says Turfco.

The larger tractor-mounted TriWave 60 is designed to tackle challenges with overseeding equipment such as disruption of existing turf, the inability to follow ground contours and limited seed germination.

WaveBlade counter-rotating blade technology creates

a U-shaped (instead of the usual V-shaped) slit providing more seed-to-soil contact and the patented seed delivery system places seeds into the slits without waste, boosting germination. The combination of the floating heads and infinite depth adjustment keeps the seed depth consistent, regardless of terrain.

The TriWave 45 is a selfcontained trailed overseeder, which can be towed behind a utility vehicle, quad bike, bunker rake or tractor. Power comes from a 25hp Briggs and Stratton Vanguard petrol engine and it quickly attaches to most turf vehicles making it convenient and efficient to use.

TriWave machines are ideal for overseeding recreational and professional sports pitches, stadium pitches, cricket outfields and most fine turf areas on golf courses.

Allett has added the Stirling battery mowers to its electric range, offering a complete lawncare system which utilises all the Allett cartridges via an adaption kit to achieve a greens standard ultra-low finish.

Wet or dry grass, long or short, collect or mulch, the PH 1250 and PH 1500 models take it all in their stride. And it’s that flexibility that sets the Profihopper apart from the crowd.

The sharpened wing blades on the horizontal SmartCut rotor cleanly cut and shred the grass before conveying it via the cross auger on to that unique second vertical auger to be packed into the collection hopper - meaning less time emptying and more time mowing. To add to that versatility, the sward is rolled after cutting and scarifying comes as standard.

The more than adequate power is provided by engines that are already Stage V Exhaust emission compliant and require no AdBlue.

Don’t compromise - choose the machine that comes with more compaction built-in for maximum work rates and less emptying.

Working with EGO’s PowerPlus Arc Lithium-Ion battery system, two electric motors independently drive the rear roller and cartridge blades, with the EGO 56V battery generating the power for up to 800m² of continuous mowing at top speed. The battery will also fit into any EGO garden tool.

The bottom blade has been made thicker with greater rigidity for trouble-free and accurate cutting. There is a roller-only drive option, so no rotating blades when travelling between lawns, and variable speed roller-drive offers more control for better mowing and cultivation results.

All six of the company’s Ultra Quick Change cartridges can be fitted, offering scarifier, verticutter, brush, sorrel roller, slitter and turf rake functions.

An LED battery charge light is continuously visible, and an overload warning light alerts the operator if the mower is being worked too hard for the motors or battery. A freewheeling front roller offers better battery life, less effort and accurate and consistent height control, says the company.

The Allett Stirling comes in two models, the Stirling 43 and Stirling 51 with 430mm and 510mm mowing width, respectively, with cut heights from 5.0-50mm.

New Verti-Drain for Preston North End

A high speed Redexim VertiDrain 2519 is delivering outstanding results for the team at Preston North End Football Club, as they work to complete regular aeration in ever-tighter

schedule windows. Currently in use at the club’s new first team training complex at Euxton, Head Groundsman Peter Ashworth says the ability to verti-drain two or three pitches in one day enables them to meet other maintenance deadlines whilst bringing multiple benefits to overall surface condition.

Peter and his team of six look after nine pitches across two training ground sites and the Deepdale Stadium, using the new 2519 alongside their existing Redexim 7316 VertiDrain. “With one machine to operate across all three facilities, we were increasingly finding that everybody always needed to use it at the same time!” Peter explains.

“I spoke to Greg Cain at Cheshire Turf Machinery and asked to see the new Redexim machine and

was instantly impressed with how quick it was.”

The 2519 offers a PTO speed of up to 540rpm which allows it to cover almost 9000m2 per hour when spaced at 165mm. It can be fitted with a range of tine options for effective aeration around the maintenance calendar.

“The first team will be using two or three of the pitches at the Euxton ground every day. Since we took delivery of the 2519 in January 2023, we’ve been able to factor in aerating a pitch or two amongst our other tasks, which keeps us in control of any compaction and ensures everything stays free draining, particularly during the wetter winter months.”

“Everything is easy to set up and adjust, and my team are enjoying how smooth and quiet it is to operate.” Peter adds.

GKB is contractor choice

Premiership Lawncare has invested in a bank of equipment from GKB Machines trusted to deliver projects for a growing

range of sports turf customers. In the last two years, Owners Josef Farrow and Mark Pettit have purchased a Deep Tine Aerator (DTA), SP100 topdresser, Dragmat and, most recently, a GKB Combinator – enabling the team to expand their range of services to both football and cricket clients.

“We’ve grown a lot in seven years and now have 30 cricket clubs on our books and a very good relationship with a number of clubs under the remit of Northampton FA,” explains Josef.

Recognising the requirement for a bigger, more robust aerator to cope with the demands of challenging ground, Premiership Lawncare became one of the first contractors in

the UK to purchase a Deep Tine Aerator (DTA) almost two years ago. “Our DTA 160 is a fantastic machine - it works to depths of up to 30cm to break through compaction and is used on all of our football work, including some council pitches which could certainly pose a problem for machines that are not as well-built as the DTA.”

“Impressed with that and the service and support we received, we then purchased the GKB Dragmat and an SP100 Sandspreader which fi ts on the back of our Toro Workman and has been a really great investment. We can get 1.5 tonnes of sand in there, and thanks to the wide conveyor, heavy duty discs and easy adjustment we get a really accurate, fine spread.”

work on a football renovation project. “With our sports-turf client base ever-increasing we decided the time was right to purchase our own machine to strip surfaces and after comparing the options, the GKB CB120 came out on top. In its first week it removed around 80 tonnes of vegetation which is impressive for a machine that’s only 1.2m wide!”

Josef adds, “One particular feature which is great for us is the ability to swap out the fraise blades in our CB120 for scarifi er blades, which means we can use it to remove OM accumulations in some of our cricket squares.”

Versatile Ventrac

The Ventrac compact tractor and its numerous attachments make it the ideal machine for groundsmen who are renovating or maintaining sports pitches, be they natural turf or synthetics.

23

A typical example is Darren Baldwin, Head of Playing Surfaces and Estates at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, who has two Ventrac Power Broom attachments: one for maintaining the pathways and car parking areas at the Club’s impressive 77-acre training facility in north London and the other to help maintain the artifi cial turf on their synthetic pitches.

“These brooms are excellent,” he said. “They are available with different levels of flexibility in the bristles, so we

use the less aggressive head with more pliable bristles on our synthetic surfaces. Not only does it sweep up accumulated debris, it also helps us relieve the compaction of the rubber crumb infi ll and is an integral part of our synthetic turf maintenance programme.

“They are also quick and easy to change and when not in use they are free-standing, which also helps with the yard management. Once you have a Ventrac tractor unit, you just keep on fi nding more things that it can do.”

To add to the versatility of the Ventrac, there’s the EB480 Aerator attachment with its ability to core, slit or fracture the turf to improve drainage, relieve compaction, improve air exchange and fertiliser intake and reduce water runoff and puddling.

This creates a stronger turf grass root structure while reducing soil compaction.

There’s also the EA600 AERA-vator, designed to stir and loosen the soil beneath the turf without destroying it.

The vibrating head creates a core hole without bringing a plug to the surface, leaving the turf ready for use immediately after treatment. With its optional seed box, it’s ideal for overseeding duties.

Finally, for areas on pitches that have standing water, the KY400 Trencher is capable of trenching up to a 1.02 metres depth with a 14cm wide cut.

It is designed with dual Push-NPull cylinders to assure positive boom control for digging, boom lift, and transport.

SEL moves into maintenance

Established water management specialist SEL Environmental is expanding its sports turf services to include pitch constructions and renovations. To do this, the company has invested in 24 pieces of new equipment from Campey Turf Care Systems.

“We pride ourselves on integrity and quality, and we went into this venture, eyes open.

“We’ve listened to our staff and invested a lot of money on quality, and you need quality to be successful in this line of work,” SEL Commercial Director and Sports and Landscapes Managing Director Jack Shuttleworth explained.

“In general, most of the top contractors working with pitches will use the Koro Fieldtopmaker (FTM) because it is the original and unsurpassed, especially with the Campey Universe rotor on hybrid pitches.”

Designed and patented by Campey Turf Care Systems, the Universe rotor features

a unique design that utilises three sets of blades rotating at different speeds for precision and consistency.

SEL will operate with two teams of four for renovations and bring them together for pitch builds. Functioning as two separate teams has meant investing in at least two of everything, with Dakota spreaders, Vredo seeders, Unirakes and Campey Dragmats joining two Koro FTMs.

For Jack, building a reputation with quality work is the objective for the next 12 months, with several projects already scheduled.

Newby Hall and Gardens is setting the highest standards of presentation. Located near Ripon in Yorkshire, the stunning home and gardens won the coveted “Historic Houses Garden of the Year” award twice.

“We have over 300 acres of parkland with an inner area of formal gardens covering some 25 acres,” begins Nigel Allison, Grounds Manager, Newby Hall & Gardens.

“Our cylinder mower was getting expensive to maintain, so we acquired a new Major MJ71-400T Trailed Swift

Roller Mower. The finish we are getting from the Major Swift is superior to anything else we have used.

“And, we are covering the grassland areas in half the time it took with the previous mower.”

The wings on the MJ71-400T fold to give a 2.4m transport width.

“The undulating ground here was always a challenge with our cylinder mowers which often scalped the turf,” continues Nigel. “The Major Swift handles even the

roughest of ground without scalping, because the front and rear rollers means it follows the contours perfectly,” explains Nigel.

“Our decision to buy the Major Swift was based purely on build quality and mowing finish, and our experience has shown that we definitely made the right choice.”

ShockWave delivers excellent sports turf

Dennis E-Series shines at San Siro

Two models in the Dennis E-Series battery-powered range are setting the standard in Italy by maintaining the pitch at the world-famous San Siro stadium.

San Siro is the home stadium of two of the most successful Italian Football League clubs: A.C. Milan and F.C. Internazionale (Inter), and in addition to hosting the matches of Milan and Inter, it welcomes concerts of many of the most renowned Italian and international artists.

Giovanni Castelli has been the Agronomist at San Siro since the Italia 90 World Cup. He oversees a team of 6 groundstaff and is responsible for every pitch operation.

Under his remit, Giovanni also decides on which machinery should be used at the San Siro,

and he explained his reasons for choosing the Dennis ES-860 and ES-34R.

After an E-Series demonstration, Giovanni selected the ES-860 and the ES-34R.

The ES-860, 34” battery powered turf management system delivers maximum versatility and the range of 13 interchangeable cassette options provide a solution to many dayto-day maintenance tasks such as cutting, scarifying, brushing, slitting and verticutting.

Furthermore, traditional G860 cassettes will also fit the ES860, meaning that customers will not have to purchase additional cassettes.

The ES-34R is a 34” (860mm) battery powered twin blade

rotary mower. It is ideal for fine turf mowing and cleaning up operations in stadia and training facilities. Utilising the contra rotating hardened steel blades and low chute ensures maximum collection performance.

A robust LCD keypad screen is an integral feature of the handlebar console on every model in the ES range. This provides the operator with a multitude of information options including speed, clip rate, service checks, lifetime running reports and battery information.

The San Siro grounds team purchased the E-Series models through Pratoverde, a Dennis and SISIS Italian distributor, and Antonio said their support has been invaluable.

Repton School in the heart of the Derbyshire countryside has an educational history spanning over 1000 years.

Sports facilities at Repton School are of a superb standard and signifi cant investments in recent years give pupils and the wider community access to state-of-the-art facilities including two floodlit waterbased Astroturf hockey pitches and a sand-based Astroturf.

It is these sports surfaces that Andy Butler, Head of Grounds and Gardens, is responsible for, covering an area of 66 acres at Repton and a further 44 acres at the preparatory school. Already an experienced groundsman at

Repton for 14 years, Andy took over 18 months ago as the man in charge. His priority was to review and re-structure the working days of the entire grounds team.

Andy cited an example of the Imants ShockWave decompactor, supplied through Campey Turf Care Product Specialist Simon Holland.

“We have had the Imants ShockWave on-site now for over six years, using it intermittently for areas with excessive compaction or standing water issues. Now, in the new system, we schedule the ShockWave treatment for all turf pitches over the Autumn period when the conditions are perfect for

this process, neither too cold nor too dry.”

The minimal surface disturbance of the ShockWave, results in no disruption or cancelled games following treatment and all of Repton School training sessions went ahead as planned. The timing allowed the turf to then lay dormant over the cold winter spell, while creating the perfect soil and root structure to encourage excellent turf growth in the Spring. This in turn created natural turf sports surfaces that were strong and resistant to the amount of wear and tear played out throughout the sporting fixtures.

Trilo offering the scarification solutions to give turf a springtime boost

The start of spring growth signals the safe return for some of the most critical mechanical maintenance operations – which can bring a significant boost to plant health.

Effective scarification can encourage healthy growth, tackle weed ingress and create an environment less favourable to fungal activity.

Among the range of scarification tools from Trilo are solutions for both fine turf and sports turf applications which, when combined with effective husbandry, can have not just environmental benefits but financial savings too.

For flat surfaces, the Trilo VCU range offers effective scarification down to depths of 40mm.

Available in 1.5m or 2m working widths, PTO drive provides reliable power to the rotor - equipped with 3mm thick manganese steel knives, capable of cutting through thatch layers and opening the surface up for

more effective overseeding and better penetration for moisture and nutrients.

The robust design delivers rigid strength, while the working depth of the VCU150 and VCU200 is simple to adjust via the threaded spindle, accessible on the sides of the unit.

An optional undulation kit, comprising of gauge wheels, can be fitted to the rear of the frame for improved results on uneven ground. Working up through the range and offering verti-cutting and collection in a single pass, is the 1.5m Trilo C15.

Ideal for sports fields and local authority applications, the C15 offers a compact and versatile solution for scarification, utilising 3mm thick blades and wind paddles to effectively remove large quantities of thatch up and into the 1m3 hopper.

Emptied easily via hydraulic lift and tip, the hopper also features a dust cover which makes for a more pleasant operator experience when working in

dry conditions. The knives can be quickly accessed for simple cleaning, maintenance or changing for twisted flail blades, converting the C15 into a cut and collect machine.

Moving up again and proving that multi-function doesn’t have to mean compromise is the Trilo M4 vacuum collector which, when fitted with scarifier shaft, allows for effective scarification on large areas such as parks and fairways.

When not in use for leaf collection through the autumn and winter, consider equipping the M4 with one of Trilo’s many scarification blade options for quick, singleperson, thatch removal and clean collection via its large 4m 3 hopper.

The scarifier shaft can then be easily swapped again, for a flail shaft - delivering quick and convenient cut and collection throughout the summer months.

New weight kit enhances INFINICUT cylinder range

In response to the additional technical variations in the way sports pitches can now be reinforced, MK6 models of INFINICUT can now accommodate an adjustable/ removable weight kit.

It is designed to be used as a means of controlling rootzone gravimetric results through the alteration of downpressure force exerted by the INFINICUT mower during use.

By its design, the INFINICUT is one of the lightest professional sports turf mowers on the market – optimally balanced to emit even, low ground pressure on the turf surface.

Increasing its adaptability even further, the new INFINICUT weight kit is ideal for Turf Managers looking to consolidate their surface – for example following intensive wear, alternative surface usage or

invasive maintenance such as deep aeration – to influence both the playability and agronomic characteristics of the turf.

Each ‘plate’ has a mass of 14kg and any number can be affixed to the holder, centrally positioned above the traction drum to ensure that the additional weight is directed evenly through the rolling action and not via the cutting element thereby retaining cut consistency and quality. The

weights can then be quickly and easily removed when gravity readings are at optimal levels.

Commenting on the introduction, Vinny Tarbox, INFINICUT Sales Manager said, “The weight kit is just another example of listening and responding to market demands, to create a product that is perfectly suited to each and every application.

Pellenc is Grade A at Marchmont House

A range of Pellenc batterypowered equipment is helping to maintain the grounds at one of Scotland’s grandest mansions.

Marchmont House is a ‘Grade

A’ listed Palladian mansion in Berwickshire built in 1750 by Hugh Hume-Campbell, 3rd Earl of Marchmont.

It is therefore fitting that Marchmont House uses a range of Pellenc battery-powered equipment - a brand which has based its success on a policy of continuous creative innovation. With an extensive product list available from Pellenc, Toby chose to invest in a whole new fleet, including Rasion mowers,

which he purchased through Agrovista Amenity.

“The mower has proved particularly good at getting between obstacles,” said Toby.

“The Rasion is lightweight and manoeuvrable, and all the staff can use it in a trouble-free manner. It has great features and I like the ease at which you can adjust the height of cut and the variable speed settings.”

Pellenc offers an industry leading four-year commercial warranty for all batteries and a three-year warranty for all tools.

Airport

chooses remote controlled agria 9600

Dublin Airport has chosen an agria 9600 remote controlled slope mower for both airside and landside use.

Purchased from Wiedenmann UK dealer, Dublin Grass Machinery, the Irish airport specifi ed the 112 cm version, which is the widest of the options available.

Chosen for its advanced safety features, the 9600 is fitted with multi-function LED lights which double up as both warning lights and switchable

work lights, particularly useful in an airport setting.

Health & Safety is prioritised at all times; the machine is operated via a remote-control pad with joystick, which allows the operator to stand up to 100 metres away, always in a safe position.

Andy Kerr, who is lead demonstrator for both Wiedenmann UK and Agria UK, said:

“What clients find important is that the agria offers multiple safety features. Tilt and vibration sensors are built into the remote-control pad in case the operator accidentally trips or falls. When these sensors are triggered, the machine shuts down completely.

“The display screen also gives alerts about low fuel levels, and allows for monitoring of the

machine temperature, battery and engine oil.

“The 9600s are hybrid bidirectional rotary mowers fitted with a powerful electronic fuelinjected KAWASAKI engine. They incorporate brushless non-maintenance 48v electric track drive motors which allows maximum torque and power directly to the eight sickle cutting blades. They give a wide cut 112 cm (44 inches) with a low cutting height of just 45 mm (1 ¾ inches).

“With electric brushless drive technology, the constant low voltage requires very little engine power to drive. The big advantage of this is that it allows maximum horse power to be directed to the blades, giving excellent mulching of the grass and leaving very little on the surface.”

Remote control solutions with PSD Groundscare

There is an increasing demand for reliable remote control mowers for the commercial user where certain tasks such as steep verges and slopes make it very difficult to mow quickly and safely and a remote control mower is often the answer.

Commercial remote control mowers have been designed and developed to reduce and in some circumstances remove health and safety issues working on slopes, near water courses, in environments were operators can be at risk, including from thorny foliage, animals, reptiles and insects.

The operator is able to work the machine at a distance which can be safer and more convenient for them. Another advantage is that complications regarding Hand and Arm Vibrations and hearing are less of an issue.

PSD Groundscare offer specific machines for specific

tasks, including: Walk-behind remote control mower – The Koppl Taurus is a versatile walk behind power unit that can quickly be converted into a remote control mower that is a robust solution suitable for dealing with hard-to-reach areas for the operator.

Tracked remote control mowers - For extra grip a tracked remote control mower such as the Stella URS 100 is perfect for customers that require stability on steep slopes up to 55 degrees such as motorway embankment services and forestry/woodland applications as well as in difficult to reach places.

Also available is the Koppl Crawler, a powerful multiattachment implement carrier with a wide range of suitable attachments available, resulting in the Crawler being an efficient solution to almost any groundscare requirement.

Available now from British garden equipment manufacturer

Handy is the Webb Supreme range of hand pushed lawnmowers, which come with a host of features and resilient design at an excellent price point.

Available with a choice of high quality aluminium or steel cutter decks, ball bearing wheels and premium Briggs & Stratton engines, Webb Supreme Lawnmowers are built to last.

There are three models in the range: an 18” with 450e engine; an18” with 500e engine; and the top of the range 21” with an EXI725 engine.

For maximum flexibility and convenience, Webb Supreme Lawnmowers come with eight height of cut settings, from 25mm to 80mm, which are quickly and easily adjusted through a single lever movement.

Clippings are gathered in up to large 70 litre easy fit collector fabric bag with hard top, or can be discharged to the side or rear, or mulched, using an innovative 4-in-1 function.

This 4-in-1 function is just one of a host of premium features that you wouldn’t necessarily expect to find on lawnmowers at this price point.

Further features of note include clearly visible red OPC and drive levers, an integrated grass full indicator, easy to access throttle control, and quick release lever to fold handles for storage; all of which make for exceptional ease of use.

For maximum manoeuvrability over any surface, Webb Supreme Lawnmowers come with extra large ball bearing rear wheels, making for a smooth run

and eliminating damage that can be caused by narrow wheels digging into your lawn and leaving unsightly tracks.

All Webb Supreme Lawnmowers come with a two year warranty and are compatible with E5 and E10 fuel, although Handy always recommend the use of fuel stabilisers with the latter to extend the life of the fuel and to protect the engine. A full range of spares, including blades and collection bags, are held in stock.

“As one of the market leaders, Webb has a reputation for quality product that’s sensibly priced” states Mark Moseley, Sales & Marketing Director for Handy.

“For our new range of Supreme lawnmowers, we have invested considerable resources into pinpointing what customers really want from their lawnmower and ensuring our products meet – and exceedthose needs.

Reducing chemical use in councils

listed here used in councils across the country including Milton Keynes Council, as well as Councils in Rotherham, Derby, Penzance, and Doncaster: These include:

• R1000 Wire Radial Brush – a 1-metre-wide steel brush; this head is a great ‘all-rounder’ for clearing moss, brushing debris and brightening up the surface too.

designed for reclaiming kerb edges where grass has overgrown. Overgrowth of 200-300mm can be quickly cleared to reveal the original pathway or pin-curb.

The CM2 Pro Ride-On range provides a practical solution. The stiff wire brushes remove weeds and moss with ease, and a regular maintenance routine can ensure areas are

permanently looking smart and tidy. The CM2 Pro power unit is a zero-turn hydrostatic machine, powered by a 4-stroke V-twin 18hp Loncin engine.

Many different attachments are then available to make a multi functional machine, with those

• WKB550 Weed Ripper Brush – a 55cm-diameter steel brush; with stiffer braids than the R1000, and positioned on an articulated head. This is a more aggressive brush, which will remove thick weeds and really get into the corners and along kerb edges. The head has 14 locking positions through 180°, and has a tilting function to allow working at varying angles.

• WKB550 Path Re-Edger Brush – a more aggressive version of the WKB550;

• AX1200 Axial Sweeper –a 1200mm wide sweeper collector; for picking up loose debris and leaves, available with or without a side brush. The hydraulic attachments feature a floating position, allowing the brush heads to follow the contours of the ground surface.

To work alongside the Ride-On range is also a collection of hand machines, ideal for the smaller and inaccessible locations. Areas such as drying spaces, alleyways, fire escapes and pathways are all prone to moss and weed growth, and can quickly become a slip hazard. The WR870 Moss Brush and WKB330 / WKB660 Weed Rippers are low vibration and very efficient. Up to 700m2 can be cleared by one person in a working day.

Club’s improvements in reliability thanks to Aspen Fuel

Newark Golf Club are one of a growing list of UK courses discovering the many benefits that Aspen Fuel brings to the operation of their petrolpowered equipment.

It’s been three years since Course Manager Alex Clarricoates made the switch to Aspen 2 and Aspen 4 for a selection of their machinery and hand tools – including seasonal equipment which now starts first time, every time, even after significant periods in storage.

Along with reduction in service time and the associated costs, Alex notes that improvements have also been observed to the operator working environment.

“The cleaner burn results in a big reduction in noxious fumes

so, when you’re working with a chainsaw in dense woodland for example, you’ll notice that come the end of the day you don’t have headaches.”
