Fields in Trust has welcomed the proposals outlined in the forthcoming Private Members Bill Parks and Playing Fields in Public Ownership (Protection from Sale) to be presented in Parliament by Tom Pursglove MP.
The organisation agrees that any park or playing field land in public ownership should not be sold or disposed of without public consultation – or a local referendum – in advance of disposal. It believes that local communities are best placed to determine individual cases based on local needs.
The FiT’s recent survey identified a clear public perception that parks and recreation grounds are at risk, with 16% of respondents reporting that local green space was, or had been under threat of development. The survey revealed that nearly
all (95%) agree that parks and play areas should be protected from development and 82% feel so strongly that they would be motivated to campaign against the loss of a park to redevelopment. Two thirds (69%) state that the loss of parks would be detrimental to children’s development and half of respondents admitted that they would be less active if their local green space was built on.
“The recently published Government strategy on SportSporting Future - aims to increase the number of children getting active earlier and developing habits that will last a lifetime,” said a FiT spokesman.
“Ambitions which risk being undermined if the playing fields and parks where these activities
take place are not protected. Fields in Trust recognise the role of play as a precursor to all subsequent physical activity.
“Children learn physical literacy through play long before they participate in any structured sporting activity and yet there is no mandatory provision for play spaces to start them on the life long journey to sustained physical activity - and no mechanism for communities to protect fields and parks under threat.
“The drive to increase participation rates and encourage those who do not take part in sport and physical activity to get involved is something we particularly welcome - our “Have A Field Day” community engagement programme during 2015
With the launch of their latest innovative multi-purpose maintenance vehicle, Multihog has demonstrated once and for all that bigger doesn’t always mean better.
Measuring from as little as 1150mm wide with a low profile from just 1975mm high the new Multihog CX Series is testament to the times in that technology comes in ever smaller packages. However, despite its compact size the machine packs a punch at 100 litres of hydraulic low per minute rivalling much larger traditional tractors units.
In addition, the new CX Series has both a hydraulic feed as well as a mechanical PTO shaft as
standard adding to Multihog’s ever expanding versatility by enabling users to utilise a wider range of attachments than ever before. This is aided further with a standard 3-point linkage setup which was previously not normally a feature on most Multihog models.
Available with a 55 or 75HP engine ultra-fuel efficient and environmentally friendly Tier IV final engine anyone with a standard UK driving license can comfortably travel to site on the public highway with road assisted suspension whilst moving at 40km/ph.

When an estimated one billion television audience tunes into the 2018 World Cup final in Moscow’s historic Luzhniki Stadium, the pitch will offer more than initially meets the eye.
SIS Pitches’ new grass innovation – SISGRASS, a reinforced natural turf system, has been chosen by the tournament’s organisers.
SIS CEO George Mullan said: “It’s the first time a World Cup final has been played on anything but all-natural grass and it’s like a dream for us as a company and a community. We have come so far to get this system to the pinnacle of world sport.”
Chelsea, Besiktas, Hull City FC and the FA’s prestigious centre
of excellence at St. George’s Park have installed SISGRASS since its release last summer.
The patented system was created after SIS Pitches approached Dutch engineers to design a ‘giant sewing machine on tracks’. This machine methodically crawls across a pitch implanting, or ‘stitching’, laser guided precision rows of more than 240 million lengths of twotone green synthetic yarn 180mm deep into the sub-surface.
A SISGRASS surface can be used between 3-7 times longer depending on weather without damage and can be laid in just one week.
The buzz is back again. BTME kick-started 2016 in what has become its usual style, with the Harrogate event attracting a large number of exhibitors and visitors alike. With the expanded exhibition space seeing a busy first two days in particular and the conference and seminar programme proving a big draw, BIGGA’s flagship show has certainly helped to get the industry off to a flying start in 2016.
Picking up on the positive vibes that the new-look SALTEX provided last November, BTME 2016 suggested there is still room for two national events. Neither event is perfect and there are undoubtedly issues that both the IoG and BIGGA need to address for their respective events. But both attracted an impressive cross-section of exhibitors and the sort of visitor numbers they can both build on for future events.
It was interesting, however, to call in at LAMMA 2016 in Peterborough for the second day of that exhibition and contrast the sheer size and scale of that event with both SALTEX and BTME.
Yes, LAMMA serves a different market to both the IoG and BIGGA. But many companies that are familiar names at both SALTEX and BTME were very much in evidence at LAMMA too with products and services that do cross-over into our industry. LAMMA attracts significantly more exhibitors and a much larger visitor audience to a two-day, outdoor event in January than SALTEX and BTME combined.
There are lessons that both SALTEX and BTME could and arguable should learn. This month we have a round-up from Harrogate, along with product spotlights for the urban environment – including fencing and security, road sweeping and cleaning, street furniture and pedestrianisation. There is also our Play & Activity section looking at the latest news and products from this vibrant sector.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to meet up with the TSP Media team at both BTME and LAMMA. We’re looking forward to a busy and successful 2016.

James Mead, Head Groundsman at Rugby School has been using RBT247 Algae Killer for over four years and believes he has found the answer to his algae problem, citing its’ 5 key benefits; safety, hygiene, longevity, cost and time saving.
As well as providing facilities for the pupils, Rugby School also plays host to prestigious events such as the Warwickshire One Day cricket, Leicester Tigers rugby team and revenue generating concerts each attracting up to 4,000 spectators.
With over 20 natural and artificial sports pitches to look after including rugby, tennis, hockey, polo, soccer and lacrosse, James and his team have their work cut out keeping all the facilities pristine and in full availability.
Nine times out of 10 there’s an overhanging tree somewhere, or shade on the pitch providing the perfect breeding ground for algae. If pitches aren’t kept clean sediment builds up, grip suffers and your equipment deteriorates quicker, suddenly a pitch with a 15 year lifespan needs replacing after 10 years.
Since using RBT247 with a planned maintenance program, James has kept on top of the problem across the whole
campus. “We’ve used it on all our artificial surfaces, PVC, canvas, Perspex, galvanized posts, even wood,” says James.
RBT247 is helping James keep Rugby Schools pitches, dugouts, goal posts, seating and netting in safe and hygienic condition and maximizes the investment the school has made in it’s facilities. And with pitch treatment taking 30 minutes, lasting six months and being ready to use again 10 minutes later, a significant saving in time and cost to James’ team.
“Spray anything that’s brand new with RBT, and it stays brand new,” adds James.
Amidst the prestige already associated with Rugby School, James recognizes his responsibility to the school.
“We are only custodians for a short period of time, but if we can raise the bar here for the next 20 years the school becomes a more attractive proposition and can realize its ambitions,” he says.
With plans to continue hosting high profile events, attract quality pupils and constantly improve its facilities, James sees RBT as a key part of his success at Rugby.

Controlling and preventing weeds in shrub beds is set to be a lot easier this year following the successful addition of ‘amenity vegetation’ to the Paradise (25 % w/w flazasulfuron) label.
Key Paradise distributor, Agrigem’s Managing Director, Kieran Would says gaining this recommendation is key to anyone involved with shrub bed maintenance as it offers more
flexibility and longevity than any other products on the market.
“It ticks many boxes from an environmental, financial and operational point of view such as; low application rates, less waste packaging, min-rinse containers & savings on labour,” he says.
“There has not been an effective product for use in shrub beds for many years now due to regulatory constraints which prohibited the use of some actives within the amenity sector. The products which currently have approval for shrub bed weed control have various drawbacks, be it price, the range of controllable weeds, longevity or the application window it must be applied in. Paradise will fill this gap in the market & prevent weed growth across all porous surfaces for up to 5 months.
“From a cost point of view,
Paradise works out cheaper than multiple applications of straight glyphosate due to the labour savings, and when used like for like, it is also around 20% cheaper than diflufenican based products such as Pistol or Proshield. This is on top of the waste container disposal savings.
“It is recommended that Paradise should be used with an approved glyphosate in order to control any weeds which may be present at time of application. It can however be used on its own in cases such as pre laying of paths or driveways where it can offer a protective buffer for any potential weed growth.”
Paradise is available for next day delivery across the U.K in 50g & 150g packs with free digital scales also available.

By working in partnership with its green roof division, one of the UK’s leading horticultural suppliers to the landscaping market saw a huge growth in roof garden business in 2015 - and predicts further grow in 2016.
Shropshire-based Boningale Nurseries said that by combining its horticulture experience and the cutting edge research from its award-winning green roof department, GreenSky, landscape architects working on designs that require a roof garden, have been able to benefit from the whole package.
From specialist advice on how to plant a roof garden to supplying all the planting stock required –both for the roof garden and the surrounding landscape.
Such has been the success of the venture that the group saw a
significant rise in its roof garden business in 2015.
“This has proven to be extremely popular because many of our clients appreciate the ease of working with a single supplier that has the in-depth knowledge required to provide high-quality advice and planting options,” said Frank Sandford, Boningale’s Sales and Marketing Director.
“Thanks to combining our expertise, roof gardens became one of our key growth areas in 2015 and we expect this trend to continue into 2016 and beyond.”
He said that the decision for Boningale Nurseries and Boningale GreenSky, which are located in Albrighton, to work more closely together came after an increasing demand from landscape architects for advice on creating roof gardens as part
of their overall landscaping plans for both new building projects and for existing developments.
Maggie Fennell, Head of Boningale GreenSky added that these have included herb projects where GreenSky was able to recommend the correct substrate for the nursery’s rosemary and lavender.
“By working more closely with the Nursery, our combined expertise has enabled us to work with contractors who are trying to create as much useable green space as possible,” confirmed Maggie. “Because we have a ‘one-stop shop’ for landscaping and green roofs, we can provide our semiintensive SkyPlugs and substrates, plus intensive roof options using plants from our nursery. This has led to our clients winning more projects, too.”

Michael Yan Hip, head groundsman at Edinburgh’s Merchiston Castle School, praises the rapid effect of Aitkens Award Nutri-Pro on the pitches.
Michael has been in charge of the 10 acres of natural sports surfaces within the 100 acre school campus for four years, but only recently started using NutriPro after sales representative Ryan Beck recommended it to him during a recent visit.
The instant impact of the product has left him extremely pleased, and he has been surprised at just how quickly it has started taking effect on the pitches with a clear improvement in colour and recovery.
“Running parallel with our chemical and biological approach are the mechanical procedures such as spiking and vert-draining to aerate and de-compact the soil. With the afore-mentioned treatment of the soil with sand, the drainage and percolation rates have improved and enabled the pitches to shed the surface water more efficiently.
He runs a fertiliser programme which targets seasonal activity using Nutri-Pro 8-0-12 applied in the summer with its higher nitrogen content to stimulate growth of sward and Nutri-Pro 4-0-24 late on in the year to combat stress from autumn and winter rain and frost.
A major outdoor holiday complex in Central England is looking to secure the future of its attractive woodland setting with natural looking landscaping materials that are destined to last for at least three decades.

Made entirely in the UK, landscape edging from
is manufactured from high tensile galvanised steel to ensure a durable, yet flexible edging can be supplied to meet the needs of all projects, large of small. The unrivalled range from EverEdge offers edging to suit any landscape requirement,
Michael explains his approach in more detail: “Here in the Colinton area of Edinburgh the soil has extremely high clay content, and it’s relatively acidic. The magnesium and calcium within Nutri-Pro break down the acid in the clay and generally improve the soil structure to promote healthy growth.”
With the pitches in constant use at the all-boys school, the protection and longevity of the sward is vital. These factors along with the improvement of winter colour are what initially drew Michael to the product, with some guidance from Ryan.

You can go glamping –glamorous camping – Mediaeval style in the grounds of Warwick Castle, with entertainment including archery, a Jester’s School and Knight’s school.
When the time comes in October to remove the tents the areas that have been covered by the wooden floors and coconut matting since April are left as bare, wet mud. These have to be brought back to grass as quickly as possible, to meet the planning conditions for the glamping use of the historic and protected parkland.
Specialists in deep aeration treatment, Terrain Aeration returned to Warwick Castle for the second year to treat and help restore the area.
The area was too wet and muddy for Terrain Aeration’s wheeled Terralift machines to gain traction and so the Tracker Terralift was used with up to a 100 metre long air pipe deployed to allow the compressor to remain on the main vehicle route through the entire site and not get bogged down.
The Terralift treatment injects compressed air into the soil as much as a metre deep to decompact, aerate and inject seaweed across the affected areas. The seaweed sticks to the walls of the fractures, swelling and contracting and keeping the fissures open.
The process clears surface water areas, helping to dry up any mud, leaving the area ready for surface preparation and the replacement of the missing grass.

Aeration is essential in maintaining healthy turf throughout the year.
And, aside from addressing poor drainage, it also helps address issues that often become a challenge come high-season, such as soil compaction and poor gas exchange.
While warmer weather may still seem far off, Michael Hampton, Turfcare Parts Manager at Lely Turfcare, suggests stocking up on tines now, in preparation for the forthcoming turf challenges.
“Successful aeration is down to the quality and condition of the tines in use. In order to maintain
your turf, it’s vital to ensure you have the very best equipment and parts to hand to meet all of your aeration needs. The key to this is stocking up before the season’s rush,” he says.
As well as stressing the importance of planning ahead with stock levels, he goes on to explain the importance of choosing genuine Toro parts: “With genuine Toro tines, users are not only able to maintain their aerator to the same high standards Toro’s known for, but they also benefit from the exceptional aeration performance of first-class parts.
“By maximising core-pulling and producing a superior quality hole, Toro tines produce precise, consistent holes for faster turf recovery, a smooth finish and speedier return to play.”
As well as stating the benefits of choosing genuine Toro parts, Michael warns of the disadvantages of fitting inferior, will-fit parts can lead to.
“If you’ve used inferior or spurious tines you’ll be familiar with the aeration headaches these can cause. Operators forever find themselves changing broken or bent tines, unclogging cores while on the job, or collecting core debris and repairing damage post aeration. And even more man-hours and money are wasted buying and applying replacement tines,” he says.
Engineered and designed to fit the entire Toro ProCore range and get the best results from an aeration programme, Toro has over 150 tines to choose from; one to suit every turf application, soil situation and season.
To stock up on tines or for more aeration advice, end users can get in touch with their local genuine Toro parts dealer or service centre.

The UK Government’s 2020 sustainable schools targets and the 2025 targets for sustainability in construction, which require the construction and whole life costs of projects to be lowered by 33 per cent with emissions lowered to 50 per cent, highlight a shift in attitudes.
Early adopters of the drive towards ‘being green’ and lowering carbon footprints are continually searching for new ways in which they can further reduce their impact on the environment. Those who have been slower to react are now scrambling to find ways to catch up and improve their credentials when it comes to sustainability – especially where there are Government targets to be met.
There’s virtually no area upon which the drive towards sustainability has not left its mark – and that goes for the security of
premises too. In the past, street furniture had an important role to play in protecting premises against external threat. If street furniture only did that then it was fulfilling all the requirements it needed to. Now, however, the demand for ever-increasing levels of sustainability has driven innovation in the street furniture industry.
Jonathan Goss, managing director of Townscape Products, points to company’s Solispost bollard – an illuminated bollard powered by solar energy – as a prime example of this trend.
“As it utilises sunlight to charge through the day, the Solispost does not require the electrical connections that would normally be associated with illumination,” he explains. “This means they are easier to install and also carries with it obvious sustainability benefits. In conjunction with
this, however, the illumination the bollard provides also serves to make it more effective in its primary purpose – to provide safety and security for those walking past.”
“Through lighting the areas around it in the evening and at night, the bollard boasts greatly increases visibility, helping to light the way for pedestrians who may be walking through dark car parks or recreational grounds.
“Through this dual function, the Solispost offers enhanced performance and provides an example of how sustainability and security can combine together to improve the overall effectiveness of a product. Pursuing sustainability can unlock a raft of other improvements too.”

A warm welcome for measures to provide high quality opportunities for the very youngest children in society to be physically active has been welcomed by the UK play industry.
The Association of Play Industries (API), which campaigns at the highest levels for policy recognition for play, supports the recommendations set out by the British Heart Foundation National Centre’s Best Start in Life manifesto.
The BHFNC early years advisory group urges policymakers not to ignore pre school-aged children when developing policy on physical activity.
API Chair Mark Hardy says: “With many children already overweight when they start primary school, it is vitally important to embed physical activity into children’s lives as early as possible.
“Physical activity provides clear developmental, health
and wellbeing benefits to even the youngest children, and healthy lifestyle habits and behaviours that start early in life are more likely to continue in adulthood.
Parents, childcare settings, local authorities and government all have a vital job to do in providing opportunities, places and time for the youngest children to play and be active.”
The BHFNC manifesto for physical activity in the early years calls for:
• Health education professionals and families to act upon the Chief Medical Officer’s guidelines for physical activity in the early years;
• Greater emphasis on the importance of physical activity across the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, and better guidance and training for early years practitioners on how to promote and develop physical activity in young children;
• Access to safe and stimulating physical
activity and travel opportunities in every local community;
• Health professionals to provide better guidance and support for parents on increasing physical activity in young children.
The API urges policymakers to take on board the manifesto’s recommendations – as well as those for a holistic strategy to support child development, as set out in the recent report on play by the All Party Parliamentary Group for a Fit and Healthy Childhoodwhen developing the national obesity framework to ensure the health and wellbeing of the under-fives are not overlooked.
Recent API research showed that nearly four in ten (38%) parents are worried their local playground will close down, with more than half (56%) unhappy about the lack of high quality play facilities in their local area.

Clacton-On-Sea’s newest attraction, Hasty’s Adventure Park, is set to be a key tourism attraction next year, particularly as it offers world class play facilities that are impervious to the unpredictable summer weather.
As a brand new attraction, Hasty’s knew that play would be a very important part of the offering and worked with Timberplay from the outset to create a challenging and existing play area that would appeal to children of all ages.
In an inspirational feat of design, the play area was constructed underneath a large Roundhouse Cattle Shed, providing year round protection from the weather.
The Hasty’s play areas has been designed and created with older children in mind, with a mammoth bespoke climbing forest. Three towers dominate the space, with net walkways and bridges spanning the gaps between.
Once children have negotiated their way to the top they can choose to carry on clambering around at height, or come back to earth
via slides, fireman’s poles or climbing walls. Balance beams and generous ropes provide lower level challenge and a sand safety surface guarantees a soft landing. This combination of ropes, bridges, nets and walkways provides the ultimate in flexible fun as children can pit their way around the course, choosing the path that best suits them.
Hammocks also serve as the perfect rest stop if it all becomes too much. As Penny Smith, Owner and Manager of Hasty’s commented: “I approached Timberplay as I felt their approach to pushing the boundaries of play, imagination and adventure struck a real chord with what we wanted. They coped with our out of the box way of thinking and rose to the challenge of designing something unique for us. The installation team were brilliant, we had left them with many challenges to bring the design to life but they did a fantastic job and made us completely confident in the quality of the whole finished project.”
With the Roundhouse Cattle Shed having open sides, the
play area still feels as if it is outdoors, fresh air can flow around the build and children can run in and out as they wish.
From Timberplay’s perspective, the Hasty’s project had some very specific issues. Ensuring that all the equipment fitted safely under the canopy demanded very careful design and installation. Spread over 5 hectares, Hasty’s is set to include a petting zoo, paddocks, ponds and a go-kart track when it opens its doors properly for the 2016 season.

Its award winning range of outdoor gym equipment, the Fitness Legacy Zone (FLZ), will be further expanded with new pieces that work together to deliver a comprehensive fitness workout.

Research has shown that two thirds of British adults fail to take the recommended amount of exercise needed to keep them healthy, with gym costs and access to fitness equipment being cited as one of the hindering factors. Hundreds of freeto-use Wicksteed FLZ sites have been installed in public spaces across the UK and have already been proven to be of value to the local community.

Leading bespoke playhouse manufacturer, the Playhouse Company, has reported a change in its customers’ habits and preferences.
Over the course of its 20 years the Playhouse Company has noticed an emerging trend of the choice of colours selected by customers. CEO, Richard Frost, elaborates: “When the company started out, our customers wanted bright colours that really stood out. Increasingly, we’re in fact now seeing the opposite with more subtle tones being selected”.
Richard attributes this to many factors ranging from fashion and what’s popular in culture to perhaps parents now making the decisions! He continues: “Despite what parents think, ultimately our customers are
their children! They are the end user. Originally parents wanted their playhouses to be brightly coloured for their children, however we’re now noticing that they are choosing something more neutral that blends in with the rest of the garden”.
The Playhouse Company is not the only company to have noticed this trend. One of its paint suppliers, the Little Greene Paint Company, has also recognised a change in the most popular paint colours.
Ruth Mottershead, marketing director at the Little Greene Paint Company said: “After the introduction of the grey colour card, we found our customers were choosing the warm, slightly pink grey shades - two years later we
have seen a shift from these warm greys to the cooler greys with blue undertones. As a result of this, we introduced the ‘Blue’ collection and have seen a noticeable increase in the number of customers using bolder, dark blues such as Hicks’ Blue and Royal Navy. These colours have been particularly popular for use on stand-out front doors and statement kitchens.”
However, the most popular paint colours remain the classic, more neutral heritage colours like the delicate ‘Celestial Blue’ from 1807, the timeless neutral ‘French Grey’ and the pure white ‘Shirting. ’
This trend was recently also recognised in the announcement of the 2016 Pantone of the Year being
announced as Rose Quart & Serenity, a blend of soft colours that are said to be chosen “as consumers seek mindfulness and well-being as an antidote to modern day stresses, welcoming colours that psychologically fulfil our yearning for reassurance and security are becoming more prominent”.

In rural South Somerset, Huish Episcopi Academy boasts one of very few provisions for playing football, with the area identified by the Football Association (FA) as one in need of further development.
With the school’s facility key not only to its 1,400 students, but also within the local community, decisionmakers at Huish applied for a grant from the Football Foundation’s (FF) funding scheme.
The academy successfully secured funding from the Football Foundation, as well as South Somerset District Council, and suppliers from the National Framework for
Football Turf Pitches were invited to tender for the contract.
TigerTurf was chosen to deliver the pitch. The leading manufacturer supplied a Soccer Real 60 XQ pitch suitable to serve the school’s strong sports curriculum of football and hockey, as well as supporting extracurricular use from two large community football clubs.
The installation itself was carried out by specialist contractor McArdle Sport-Tec, in just three months, with the work taking place towards the end of the academic year and through the school holidays to minimise disruption.
Play began almost immediately, with the new artificial grass pitch being used by students, local clubs and even the youth team from Football League club Yeovil Town during the first fortnight of its opening.

Green fingered school children in Swindon are spending more time outdoors after their wildlife pond area received a LazyLawn makeover.
The UK’s largest artificial grass brand has transformed what was a soggy, overgrown and unsafe area for the children, into a wildlife haven at East Wichel Community Primary School in Swindon.
Children in the Gardening Club, which runs every Monday after school, can now enjoy exploring the wildlife after 30 square meters of its popular Wonder Yarn 26 was installed. Sleepers were also fitted around the edge of the pond, which has provided a safe platform for the children.
Wendy Kirton, Chair of Fundraising for East Wichel Primary, said: “Most of the rainwater from the school field seemed to end up near the pond, meaning it was inaccessible and unsafe for the children to use.
“As I have a LazyLawn in my garden at home, I approached the local licensee, Lee Giles who kindly donated the turf for us.
“The children absolutely love the new wildlife pond and they are currently working on a bug hotel as their next project. We would definitely recommend LazyLawn to other schools because it’s practical and lowmaintenance.”
The Association of Play Industries (API) welcomes government recognition of the vital need to create positive early childhood experiences of physical activity that go beyond traditional and competitive sport.
The new Sporting Future strategy was published on 17th December and the API was pleased to see some encouraging new measures to get the nation moving.
It particularly welcomes:
• Recognition of the need for a new, more joined-up strategy for delivery and funding of sport and physical activity, with
formal progress reporting on that strategy;
• The creation of a Sport Cabinet and working group to share best practice for sport and physical activity across all UK nations;
• The broadening of Sport England’s remit beyond traditional sport to cover wider physical activity;
• Continued funding for the Sport Premium for schools and support for schools to open their physical activity facilities for local communities;
• Co-location of physical activity facilities with other public services such as libraries and GP surgeries.
Millions of women and girls have been inspired to get active by Sport England’s ground-breaking This Girl Can campaign. In the last 12 months, 2.8 million 14-40 year old women say they have done some or more activity as a result of the campaign. This Girl Can tells the unedited story of women who exercise and play sport - and celebrates the reality of cellulite, sweat and jiggling flesh.
A snapshot sample of 1,000 women were asked the physical activity they did, their attitudes to exercise and their awareness of the campaign. They reinforce the Active People Survey results published in December,
which revealed a surge in the number of women taking part in activity or sport.
Jennie Price, Sport England’s chief executive, says This Girl Can is not just being talked about, but is also changing behaviour.
“But the job is far from done,” she added. “With a gender gap of 1.73 million fewer women playing sport compared to men, we need to keep getting the message out there that women come in all shapes and sizes and levels of ability, and they should all feel able to exercise and play sport.”

API Chair Mark Hardy says: “Research proves that for some children, participation in sport can be a negative experience which can discourage them from taking part in physical activity altogether.
“Physically inactive children are more likely to become sedentary adults with all the associated health risks and costs that brings. Providing support for wide-ranging physical activities like dance, walking and cycling is a hugely positive step to encourage as many children as possible to be active.”
The association awaits publication of the government’s new national
obesity framework – due in early 2016.
Mark Hardy: “We hope the national obesity framework will introduce bold measures that effect significant behavioural and attitudinal change amongst children and parents.
“Children need high quality spaces and facilities, time and parental/family encouragement to play actively outdoors and we urge the government to ensure play is well-represented in and supported by the strategy. The development, health and wellbeing benefits of play are far-reaching, not just
for children but for the local communities they live in.”
The association campaigns at the highest levels for policy recognition for play and is a member of the All Party Parliamentary Group for a Fit and Healthy Childhood, Children’s Play Policy Forum and Federation of Sports and
Play Associations. Recent API research showed that over half (56%) of parents are unhappy at the lack of high quality play facilities in their local area, while nearly four in ten (38%) worried their local playground will close down.

The Toro Workman GTX, a turf and grounds crossover utility vehicle, has more power, improved steering, and an exclusive suspension and braking system, making it the most versatile, practical and comfortable in its class.
Lely’s national sales manager Jeff Anguige comments on the next generation of mid-duty utility vehicles: “The GTX is an exceptionally versatile and powerful machine, a host of additional features means the new model meets high power and performance standards, while also being incredibly comfortable to drive. And while more compact and lightweight, meaning it’s kind to turf, power hasn’t been substituted for a light tread; this machine has both.”

The Air Flo 3 is designed to provide a calm and serene water surface thanks to quiet on-shore compressors, which pump air to diffusers on the lake or pond bed. The diffusers release oxygen creating mass circulation to the bottom and top water layers without affecting the water’s surface. This creates, says Otterbine, a perfect water feature for the golfing environment where peace and tranquillity is important to players.

Jacobsen had an excellent BTME, both inside the Harrogate exhibition centre.
The week began for the Jacobsen team with a Monday night reunion for past and present delegates of the Jacobsen-sponsored Future Turf Management Initiative.
The Jacobsen stand in Hall M had good footfall on the opening day of the show and excellent traffic on Wednesday, the busiest day of the show. There were BTME debuts for the new Jacobsen LF577 seven unit fairway mower, the Jacobsen HR700 wide area rotary mower and the Jacobsen Truckster, the biggest heavy duty utility vehicle in its class. Also on display was the new E-Z-GO RXV golf car featuring the new TKV GPS
management system.
The opening day concluded with the Jacobsen-sponsored BIGGA Welcome Celebration, hosted by BBC TV’s Naga Munchetty. David Withers, President of Jacobsen, thanked everyone for their attendance and congratulated BIGGA’s Jim Croxton on the success of their ‘Continue to Learn’ education programme.
He was recalled to the stage to present the Ransomes Jacobsen Edwin Budding Award to Stephen Tucker, Equipment Manager at Tranquillo Golf Club in Florida.

The new Jacobsen LF577 lightweight wide area fairway mower made its world debut at BTME. The new mower, one of two additional machines to Jacobsen’s LF range, features seven cutting units with a mowing width of 3.53 metres, providing industry leading productivity and functionality.
Productivity is increased by 38% when compared to similar fairway mowers with five cutting units, with a prodigious output of 4.5 hectares per hour at a mowing speed of 12.9 km/h.
The SureTrac 4WD parallelcross series system provides
superior traction and climbing ability. The Jacobsen LF577 uses the legendary Classic XP cutting units with 17.8cm (7”) diameter units fitted with either 9- or 11-blade reels. Smaller 12.7cm (5”) diameter Classic XP units with either 7- or 9-blade reels and TrueSet adjustment are used on the Jacobsen 557.
The standard power unit is a Kubota 28 kW (37.5hp), 3-cylinder, liquid cooled diesel engine with an optional Kubota 36.5 kW (48.9hp) 4-cylinder, liquid cooled diesel engine.
Ransomes Jacobsen Enquiry 94Lely UK chose its best-selling T503 model to represent the TYM Tractors range at BTME.
Shown alongside Toro fine turf machinery on the Lely – Partners on Turfcare stand, Lely says TYM is a great fit for customers looking for a compact tractor to work in conjunction with their Toro equipment.
The T503 is a firm favourite with customers working on big projects, thanks to a long list of features including spacious cab, rear wiper, projection headlamps, dual air filter, and hydrostatic power steering.
The full TYM range extends from 23 to 100hp models to cater for all turf tractor needs and is ideal for use with popular Toro units such as the ProCore aerator and ProPass topdresser. The tractors can also be fitted with
an array of attachments such as TYM’s own range of loaders and backhoes.
All TYM tractors benefit from a powerful four-cylinder, liquidcooled diesel engine, apart from the T233 and TS25, both of which have a three-cylinder watercooled engine. All models feature hydrostatic power-steering for effortless manoeuvrability and a tight turning circle and all models offer a heavy-duty, fourwheel-drive front axle for greater traction where needed.
Also available from Lely are the T233 has the smallest horsepower of the TYM family, but don’t be deceived, this one packs a real punch. The TS25 is the latest addition to the range and brings with its entry into the sub compact tractor market superb value along with outstanding performance.
The T353 is easy to use; it has an excellent turning radius and offers maximum traction, too.
The T433 is a good choice for pulling equipment over a sizeable distance, like, for example, across a golf course. The heavyduty T754 has a solid chassis and a spacious, fully air-conditioned cabin, ensuring all-round comfort for operating in all conditions.
As you might expect, the T1003 has the biggest engine of them all – a 100 horsepower Perkins – and is designed to take on the toughest jobs of them all, too. All TYM tractors can be upgraded with optional heated and air-conditioned cabs for maximum operator comfort.
Lely UK Enquiry 96With economy in mind, Etesia has a wide range of attachments which enable their Hydro 124, Hydro 100 and Hydro 80 ride-on mowers to carry out many tasksall-year-round.
These machines can not only help spread precious funding; but also enable commercial end users to win new contracts.
One of the most popular accessories is the front-mounted sweeper for cleaning roadways, car parks, pathways, playgrounds
and other hard surfaces. This attachment can be fitted to either the Hydro 100 or Hydro 124 models – turning a ride-on mower into a 365-days-a-year workhorse.
Powered by the ride-on’s engine, and hydraulically driven via the PTO, the brush covers the full working width of the host machine. No special tools are required to fit the unit directly on to the mower’s front-mounted linkage. The brush can also be angled left or right according to the mode or work.
The polypropylene bristles are extremely hard wearing and very tough to ensure a firm scrub on pavements and other hard surfaces where they efficiently remove grime, debris and moss. There is an optional side rotary brush for clearing awkward areas, such as gutters and gullies. All rubbish is swept into the optional collection box and there is a dust protector for use when the brush is used without the box.

The Pellenc Airion blower can be used near noise sensitive areas such as hospitals, schools, camp sites and towns.
It is also perfectly suitable as a cleaning tool or roads alongside sweepers at any time of the day and it works just as effectively as a replacement for the traditional sweeper in towns as it does in parks and gardens.
With no more starting problems, no more filling of a petrol tank; your old machinery will belong in the past with the light, odourless and noise-free Pellenc Airion blower.
There are also the fuel savings to consider. 3,000 litres of fuel costs on average £3,900 and using, on average, five litres per day will last 600 days costing an
average of £6.50 per day; while a Pellenc battery costs just 85p per day to run.
Pellenc’s zero emission concept offers a full range of truly professional handheld power tools are powerful, silent and emission-free thanks to the lithium-ion technology and ‘brushless’ electric motors which are patented to the company.
These environmentally-friendly tools are now offered with a three year commercial warranty as standard - the first manufacturer to offer this on battery-powered tools.
Pellenc is sold exclusively in the UK by Etesia UK.

The ECHO PB-251 power blower has a 24.5cc stage 2 compliant low emission engine, with an output of 0.70kW, belting out a maximum air speed of 71m/s. Wet leaves are effectively lifted and quickly driven into piles and yet the blower was so easily controlled at an angle that it had little effect on the rubber surface. A neat feature is the Cruise Control which locks the throttle in position so you don’t need to keep your finger on it.
The exhaust is at the front so even the low emissions are directed away from you, and there is an EZ lock system for securing and disconnecting the blower pipe.
A see-through fuel tank makes it easier to keep an eye on the fuel level. In all a high-powered, well-balanced and easy to use blower that made short work of a mountain of leaves.
ECHO Enquiry 107The SweepEx range of push brooms offers a good choice to suit the task at hand and in particular the MegaMax which is not just a push broom, it is also a bulk volume mover.
Hitched to a telehandler, fork lift, skidsteer or tractor you can use it for clearing leaves and rubbish and at the first sight of snow it will be ready to clear large areas quickly and efficiently.
The MegaMax takes the concept of a heavy-duty broom and adds patented side retainers, which makes it ideal for clearing snow. The broom holds bulk volumes of material in front of the brush without spillage at the sides. It’s cleverly designed to incorporate end brushes that are carefully twisted, so they actually pull snow away from a curb or wall and push it into the main path of the broom. It also offers a squeegee effect on wet surfaces. Similarly it will deal with other materials, sweeping them out of awkward corners, which makes
this all-rounder good for yards, warehouses, amenity areas, construction sites, farms and landscaping projects.
As there are no motors, belts or chains and no flying debris, the MegaMax is safe and maintenance free, with hardwearing brushes designed to sweep up to 450 miles before the hard-wearing polypropylene bristles need changing.
Even then it’s an easy job to replace them. Another key feature is the bristles are rigid enough to allow the broom to stand up without additional support for quicker and easier mounting to the host vehicle There is a variety of SweepEx push brooms to choose from including the basic ValuSweep, to the Mega and SweepEx Pro, to suit all applications. The MegaMax is available in 1.5m, 1.8m and 2.4m widths.
The durability of the MAJOR 4.1m Swift roller mower has astounded Australian council worker Dave Hannam – who is responsible for cutting and maintaining every park, oval and reserve in the Surf Coast Shire.
He is the sole tractor operator for the south-west Victorian council in Australia, which boasts an area of more than 1500 square kilometres.
Mr Hannam said the council purchased the MAJOR Swift roller mower in January 2015. Twelve months later, the mower is still functioning on its original top blade.
“After one year, I’ve clocked up about 1000 hours on the mower so far, and we haven’t had to change its blade,” he said.
Mr Hannam said the achievement was remarkable, particularly considering that the council had to install new roller bearings and belts on its previous mower every few months.
“The old mower was breaking apart all the time,” he said. “It couldn’t handle the workload, but we haven’t touched the MAJOR mower once. We haven’t even put a spanner on it!”
The council decided to purchase
a new mower, after Mr Hannam suggested they needed a sturdier machine that could better handle the job. After doing some research on the internet, he came across the MAJOR mower.
“I went looking for a decent mower and found MAJOR,” Mr Hannam said. “One of its biggest benefits was it was a roller mower; it rolls along the turf and leaves a beautiful finish.”
Mr Hannam said his requirements for the Surf Coast Shire included a robust mower that had the capability of being able to cutting horse paddocks, ovals and reserves.
“We got to see a demonstration of a smaller version of the mower, before we decided to buy it,” he said. “The minute I saw it, I fell in love. All the drive shafts are protected by the clutches and the gearboxes too. You can’t break this machine, it’s been designed to cut grass and it’s been built to last.”
Mr Hannam described himself as a very satisfied customer. His recommendation does not come lightly. The 46-year-old has been cutting grass since he was just 15 – and he knows a good mower when he sees one.

Ryetec’s popular Contractor series flail collector, used across the country on conservation work from clearing invasive species to collecting heather seed for regeneration products has been further improved and toughened for the harshest of working environments with the addition of a new version of all but the smallest model.
The aptly named Super series available in 6 of the 7 model line-up incorporates significant changes to the flail rotor.
The new Super models feature a flail with a stronger shank and 20mm diameter bolt to fix it to the rotor instead of the normal 16mm on the rest of Contractor
range. This is a response to the problem when machines are used in environments where it is impossible to see obstructions such as stones or stumps on land which may never have been cleared by machines, such as heather moorland.
To further improve the machines ability to operate with minimum down time in the conservation environment the flail rotor is supported by two heavy duty bearings housed in specially machined supports as opposed to the less impact resistant cast bearing supports used on the standard machines.

The next generation of products from EGO Power+ have been unveiled and the expansion of the range will see the brand increase its ever-growing presence in the garden machinery market in 2016.
The range of 56 volt lithium-ion products launched in the UK and Europe in spring 2015 and proved incredibly popular.
The original range consisted of six core products – a mower, a blower, a chainsaw, a hedgetrimmer, a 30cm line trimmer and a 38cm line trimmer. Now for 2016, the range has expanded to include nine new products.
Three new lawnmowers have been added to the range and includes a steel deck mower with a 50cm cutting width and the option of self-propel. A 52cm poly deck model with self-propel has also been added to the range to offer a wider alternative to the existing 49cm mower. All four
mowers are able to be compactly folded for vertical storage.
Two new line trimmers with brushless motors have been introduced to complement the existing two. These are a 33cm option with a 2mm twin line and two speed functionality and a 38cm option, with a 2.4mm twin line and variable speeds, with a bike handle for extra manoeuvrability and operator comfort.
The number of hedgetrimmers has been boosted by the addition of two new models with brushless motors, of 51cm and 65cm, both with an articulating head for improved user comfort, and a new, more powerful, longer 40cm chainsaw has been added to the range. Finally, the incredibly powerful blower has been made even more powerful, yet lighter, thanks to a new fan design that offers improved air intake.

Alan Ferguson, Group Head of Grounds and Estates at St George’s Park, home for England’s twenty-four national teams, is responsible for all 12 pitches at the 330-acre National Football Centre in the Staffordshire countryside, as well as the wider estate.
His remit also includes overseeing the playing surface at Wembley Stadium. That represents a lot of ‘cleaning’ to be done after games and training, Alan had watched carefully the development of the Allett RM34 Stadium Mower as a potential solution to the centre’s pitch cleaning problems.
“We had a trial with a demonstration machine on loan in August to September 2015 and were immediately impressed with
the way the Allett performed,” says Ferguson. “With the extra width, (860mm/34”) the roller and vacuum effect, it saves an immense amount of time and manpower in the clean-up process after matches. In fact we were so delighted with the Allett we ordered seven machines and took delivery in December. They really are the ideal solution and are in use on all the pitches.”
Specifically developed with and for stadium groundsmen, the Allett RM34 has a twin-bladed high-lift system that cuts and vacuums quickly and efficiently to clean up after matches or mow higher during grow-in.
There’s a micro height adjustment between 15mm and 75mm for exact blade cut and a 5 gear speed selection for precise
control. Solid and substantial to use the RM 34 is surprisingly light and also has an optional front fixed brush strip available.
The primary role for the Allett machines at St. George’s Park is to cut and remove the loose grass on the surface of the pitch which, if left to break down and decay, forms algae on the surface which is not only slippery but leaves the pitch open to risk of fungal attack, disease and a build-up of thatch.
Alan’s team will be relocating three of the Allett RM34 mowers to the training base in France as part of the national side’s maintenance support on the training pitches for the European Championships in 2016.

The TMSystem is unique and by using the appropriate chassis adaptor kit, is fully compatible with all main-stream makes of triplex greens mowers and lightweight fairway mowers, like John Deere, Jacobsen and Toro. The chassis is also interchangeable with ATT’s own 22″ INFiNiSystem.
This ATT turf management system consists of a range of 10 SMART cassettes which enable different maintenance activities to take place - aeration, brushing, de-thatching, scarifying, top dressing, grooming, levelling and mowing. It is a truly multifunctional piece of kit.
The INFiNiSystem pedestrian version out performs any conventional mower. It cuts better; tracks straight; follows undulations; has low weight; can be battery powered or configured as a hybrid; is maintenance and environmentally friendly and offers overall value for money.

Poweroll has launched the first of two new smoothing irons.
The first to become available is designed for bowling greens and called the Blade Runner. This new iron has all the features that anyone could wish for to provide a professional finish to a bowling green.
The primary difference between this iron and other similar ride-on machines is that where most have been designed to be utilised on golf fairways, this iron has been designed specifically for bowling greens.
In common with most other ride-on greens irons, this machine is operated sideways with a handlebar for steering and foot control for ground speed
and direction of travel. However, where it differs from most others, is that it has a wide chassis and low centre of gravity, making it very stable for the operator. The Blade Runner has a rolling width of 1metre and top speed of 10mph. More than fast enough for a relatively small area like a bowls green!

The Association for Public Service Excellence’s latest report outlines the argument for adopting integrated weed control methods.
It explains “how the latest guidelines on integrated weed control can help local authorities meet their legal duties to reduce harm to the public and environment”.
APSE shares the view that the reliance upon chemical methods of weed control is unsustainable and recognises the growing evidence that points towards the increased use of herbicide and pesticide is damaging to the environment.
Looking at environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional spraying, the report highlights how Aberdeen City Council have recently implemented a hot water weed and moss killing system from Cardley-Wave after a trial period proved successful.
Aberdeen City Councillor Neil Cooney said investing in the innovative Cardley-Wave hot water weed control system had paid off for the authority
“More and more countries are banning the use of certain types of weedkillers so it makes sense
for Aberdeen to stay ahead of the legislation and take the best environmentally-friendly course of action now available to control weed growth,” he added.
