New £900,000 project to engage young people with heritage parks

Fields in Trust has partnered with green space charity Groundwork and The National Youth Agency to launch ‘Future Proof Parks’, a £900,000 National Lottery-funded programme that will support Friends of parks groups and local young people to work together in a series of innovative projects which will protect heritage parks and widen the understanding of their importance.

Future Proof Parks will engage 880 young people across the UK in the West Midlands, East of England, West of England, North West and North East, to learn more about their local historic park heritage, encourage young people to join their local friends of park groups and volunteer to preserve and celebrate the local spaces that matter to the communities they live in.

The programme will work with 60 Friends of park groups to

give them informal youth work skills to engage and work with young people, in order to share ideas and combine the talents of established friends of park groups, with the passion and skills of young volunteers.

The three-year programme has been awarded funding through the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Kick the Dust programme, which aims to enable more young people to be involved in the UK’s heritage.

The programme has the support of Parks and Green Spaces Minister, Rishi Sunak, who said: “Parks play a valuable role in our communities, providing vibrant locations for people to socialise, exercise and relax. It’s inspiring to see the dedication of the many Friends of parks groups up and down the country who make huge contributions to their local green spaces.

“I welcome Future Proof Parks to help us encourage more young people to get interested in and preserve their local parks and green spaces for generations to come.”

As well as supporting those communities directly involved in the programme a set of resources will be made available to encourage and support other Friends of parks groups to work with local young people. Fields in Trust Chief Executive, Helen Griffiths, said: “Our research shows that parks and green spaces bring economic and welfare benefits to people across the UK.

“At a time when many are under threat it is vital that we encourage the next generation to care for and support our parks and green spaces so that people, both now and in the future, can continue to benefit from them.”

Fields in Trust

Steering Group, Jack Welch, said: “ It’s wonderful to see young people’s participation in heritage is being prioritised with this funding, especially in this project that will see more young people able to participate in the life of their local park

DLF Seeds acquires PGG Wrightson Seeds It’s time for a Minister for Children, says API

DLF Seeds have announced that an agreement has been reached to acquire PGG Wrightson Seeds. With DLF recognised as a leading seed player in the Northern hemisphere, and PGG occupying a similar position in the south, the combined business is seen as a significant strategic leap towards a significant global presence.

PGG Wrightson Seeds is an international market leader

within forage and turf seeds, responsible for many of Europe’s top-rated bent grasses including Manor and Arrowtown, with activities in New Zealand, Australia, Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil.

With DLF operating complementary business in terms of market coverage and distribution capabilities, the combined business will allow for continued investments at the

highest level, to offer end-users better seed solutions through research and plant breeding.

DLF Chief Executive Truels Damsgaard said, “The world is changing ever faster with new plant breeding technologies offering quicker and better tailored solutions to diverse amenity conditions.

“To stay ahead of the competition, it is of utmost importance to gain scale in your business, to support biotechnology while minimising timescales and risk. With this acquisition DLF not only achieves such scale, we also gain a strong supply chain and market coverage in the Southern Hemisphere, which positions DLF uniquely in the global forage and turf seed space.”

The transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close within six months.

The Association of Play Industries (API) is lending its full support to the call for a Cabinet Minister for Children & Young People.

The APPG on a Fit and Healthy Childhood is campaigning for the appointment of a Minister whose sole focus will be on children’s welfare. API Chair Mark Hardy, says: “Children are facing unprecedented challenges meaning that, unless things change, they could become the least healthy adults in living memory.

“What is required is a joined-up approach to tackle the overwhelming odds against today’s young people – a Minister tasked to look at the whole picture and place children at the heart of policy making.

“Childhood obesity and rising mental health issues are being

fuelled by a chronic lack of physical activity amongst children. How many children this summer, for example, will spend the majority of their time indoors and alone, dependent on their screens for entertainment?

“Today’s children are the least active UK generation and the toll on their physical and mental health is great. As a society, our emphasis on the importance of activity for children is waning.

“Our own research has revealed an alarming decline in playground provision. 112 playgrounds were closed in the 2014-15 financial year and a further 102 in 2015-16. Councils revealed 80 more closures in 2016-17 followed by at least 51 closures planned for 2018.”

The role of the next generation of groundscare professionals, greenkeepers, landscapers, designers, engineers, product manufacturers and developers has been a focus of the summer months.

And we head into the autumn with two leading industry bodies throwing their weight behind important new education programmes.

Both The Fields in Trust and The Land Trust are supporting education programmes aimed at encouraging the industry’s workforce of the future. And both initiatives are welcome additions to the industry’s on-going attempts at improving skills, training and safeguarding a future role for the next generation of professionals.

In the coming months we will also see the likes of the WorldSkills 2018 final, with the UK once again well-represented. There will be the usual high-quality education programme, seminars and workshops at SALTEX 2018 and continuing development of schemes from the likes of BALI and the Landscape Institute all aimed at improving the knowledge of existing workforces and laying solid foundations for the workforce of the future.

Our industry continues to grow and slowly but surely it continues to gain the sort of recognition and appreciation at home that it already enjoys abroad. We have a world-leading industry that demands a world-class workforce.

This month we have our Professional Groundscare, highlighting just what a busy summer it has been and also the hard work that lies ahead after a challenging summer of prolonged hot weather and a lack of rain. We focus on key areas such as weed and pest control, as well as important product sectors like brushcutters.

Elsewhere this month we look at estate management and our usual spotlight on the urban environment.

New Innovation Hub at SALTEX 2018

New for 2018, SALTEX visitors can expect to see and experience the very latest groundscare ingenuity in a new area on the show floor which is purely dedicated to innovation and new concepts in grounds management.

SALTEX plays host to the most technologically-advanced equipment showcase with hundreds of exhibitors pushing the boundaries with new products and services.

Within this fast-paced and evolving industry, manufacturers are more forward-thinking than ever before to ensure their products match their client’s needs and with over 8,000 SALTEX visitors, these new technologies are certainly under the spotlight.

According to the SALTEX 2017 visitor survey, an incredible 97 per cent claimed that their main reason for attending the exhibition was to see the latest innovations. Taking this

feedback on-board, SALTEX event organisers have decided to host, for the very first time, a dedicated Innovation Hub.

Visitors can expect to watch interviews with industry experts and those at the forefront of new groundscare innovations and listen to research and trial work findings. Furthermore, a number of key speakers will take to the stage to discuss and explore current groundscare trends such as cordless/environmentally friendly equipment, robotics, GPS control machinery, pesticide alternatives, pitch lighting (including watering systems and oxygen) and pitch monitoring systems.

In this exciting new feature, delegates will be able to engage in conversation regarding key topics or seek advice while using the opportunity to network with the industry’s most innovative business leaders and exporters – making the Innovation Hub a must visit area for all attendees.

The Innovation Hub will also play host to the SALTEX 2018 Innovation Award ceremony. Entries to the second ever SALTEX Innovation Award are now open and visitors can again expect to see the latest and very best in new grounds care technology.

Making its debut at last year’s show, the Innovation Award attracted a number of highquality entries from across the globe spanning a wide variety of products, services and equipment.

The independent panel of judges, who based their decisions on a number of factors including what the entry offers the industry and how it makes life easier for the person using it, were unanimous in selecting four stand-out entries – and by all accounts 2017 was the year for new line marking technologies.

The standard was incredibly high resulting in a tie for first place. Rigby Taylor’s Intelligent One autonomous robotic line marker and Fleet Line Markers’ MAQA line marking machine were announced as joint winners of the first ever SALTEX Innovation Award.

Second place went to Oregon’s Gator Speedload, which judges said was a quick and simple

device which negated the need to dismantle the head each time to re-load/wrap new strimmer cord. Third place went to the Etesia Hydro 80 MKHP4 E-Connect, due to its ability to set up multiple users and record data – allowing organisations or clubs to monitor the amount of use and user’s ability.

Due to the popularity of last year’s Innovation Award, SALTEX 2018 is expected to attract even more entries and all will be revealed in the lead-up to the show. Additionally, by referring to the show guide, SALTEX visitors will be able to follow an Innovation Trail enabling them to see every single entry on the show floor.

SALTEX takes place at the NEC, Birmingham on October 31 and November 1.

Visitors can register to attend SALTEX for FREE via the website – www.iogsaltex.com.

Marking the Centenary Fields legacy

Fields in Trust has started its Centenary Fields Legacy campaign to mark the sacrifice of those who gave their lives during World War I and the legacy the Centenary Fields programme is creating. August 8, 2018 marked the centenary of the start of the Allies’ Hundred Days Offensive, which began with the Battle of Amiens.

Fields in Trust Head of Programmes, Angela Lewis, said: “It is an appropriate time to reflect on the World War I generation as we approach the end of the commemoration period and here at Fields in Trust between now and 11th November we are telling the story of our Centenary Fields programme.

“Since 2014, we have been working in partnership with The Royal British Legion and communities up and down the UK to protect parks and green spaces in perpetuity in honour of those who fought and lost their lives in World War I. Each day, until 11th November, we will showcase one of the protected Centenary Fields on an online interactive map and tell its story, which will also be our contribution to The Royal British Legion’s ThankYou campaign – a national movement to say ‘Thank You’ to the entire generation who lived through the war, served,

sacrificed and changed our world. Local communities will join in and express their gratitude too.

“Stories that we will tell include the contribution of individual combatants, some famous names among them; the memorials that remember the fallen, from simple village stone crosses to more extravagant commemorative sculpture; the way in which sites served the war effort and also those green spaces with a contemporary resonance - communities doing something now to remember the sacrifice of 100 years ago.

The Centenary Fields programme publicly demonstrates the nation’s gratitude to the World War I generation in a unique way and the commitment of landowners across the country means that when the commemorations are over their local communities will always have somewhere for play, sport –or a quiet moment of reflection.”

It’s a hole-in-one for Makita at golf club

Fast, powerful and brilliantly handy grass shears by Makita UK have proved to be an invaluable addition to the greenkeepers kit at Chipping Sodbury Golf Club, Bristol.

The club has recently had several new revetted bunkers installed on The Beaufort Course.

It was advised that a traditional line trimmer could not be used to maintain the edge of the bunkers as in doing so would risk damaging the face of the bunkers. An alternative needed to be sought and following a demonstration of the Makita 18v LXT Grass Shears, Head Greenkeeper John Keenaghan purchased two of the units to help keep the revetted bunkers in tip-top condition to remain

in-keeping with the rest of the beautifully manicured parkland course. John Keenaghan says: “These Makita grass shears do a fantastic job and are exactly what we were looking for. We will be recommending them to fellow greenkeepers that have revetted bunkers.”

Makita’s latest offering of the 18v grass shears is the DUM604Z. The shear has a double blade action, a cutting width of 160mm, and a 3-stage cutting height adjustment from 15 – 25mm for really fine work.

With an ergonomically designed soft grip handle and light in weight at just 1.8kg, including the battery, user comfort is guaranteed while low noise emissions will ensure Sunday morning peace and quiet. This model is available as a body only machine and a compatible hedge trimmer attachment is also available that has a tool-less blade change.

Grange implements structural and operational improvements

Grange, the UK’s leading supplier of fencing and decorative garden structures, has announced two changes to its UK management team with immediate effect.

Dr Dominika Bienkowska has been appointed Chairman of the

board and Paul Taylor has been made Commercial Director. Dominika has a background in business management and product development.

She will steer the latter to introduce a number of trendsetting designs for Spring 2019, and will improve existing synergies between Grange and its parent company Stelmet. Paul will maintain his responsibility for sales & marketing as well as having a wider brief covering operations.

In addition to strengthening its management team, Grange has also completed a reorganisation

of the company’s Much Wenlock site in order to improve stock rotation and stock quality.

The implementation of a new site layout has also facilitated the fitting of anti-weathering membranes to enhance product protection.

Completing further changes for the business are enhancements being made to Grange’s distribution mechanics in order to shorten lead times, raise standards in order fulfilment, and maximise customer satisfaction.

Tottenham Hale redevelopment plan features landscape design by Grant Associates

Argent Related has submitted proposals for the mixed-use redevelopment of Tottenham Hale in North London, featuring landscape design by Grant Associates. Masterplanned by architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris (AHMM), Alison Brooks Architects and Pollard Thomas Edwards alongside Grant Associates, the project will deliver some 1,036 new homes.

Grant Associates’ key focus is within the strategically important Ferry Island. The aim is to create a new destination at the heart of the District Centre that will provide a substantially improved public realm, unify streets and spaces, prioritise pedestrian and cyclist access, and reinforce the connection between Ashley Road and the retail park to the south.

The developer’s proposals are likely to go before the council’s planning sub-committee later this year.

“Our aim is to breathe new life into the area, providing attractive and functional public spaces for existing residents and future resident to enjoy, said Peter Chmiel, director at Grant Associates.

“We aim to improve access to Tottenham Hale Station, and maximise the opportunity for active frontages to enliven the public spaces by creating an

attractive south and west facing public square.

“In addition to creating a focal point for Tottenham, this scheme is set to create employment opportunities, as well as deliver much needed affordable housing and amenities for the community. We’re very excited to be part of Tottenham’s transformational plans.”

Research underlines credentials of younger thinner cut turf

Independent research by the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) has underlined the credentials of younger thinner cut turf for its ability to root more quickly and vigorously than the traditional older thicker cut product, allowing faster establishment and a healthier and more attractive lawn.

The research comprised of two trials conducted at the STRI headquarters in Bingley, West Yorkshire, in Autumn 2017.

The outdoor field trial saw the laying of both younger thinner cut Rolawn Medallion turf and older thicker cut Medallion turf side by side for 50 days. After just 20 days the younger thinner cut turf showed deeper, denser and more vigorous rooting compared to the older cut turf. Surface appearance was also better throughout the trial, with its NDVI (Normalised Difference Vegetation Index) score - a measure of turf health and quality - consistently higher throughout the 50 days of being laid. STRI Research Manager Dr Tom Young commented: “Initial

visual appearance of the younger thinner turf was superior to the older turf, with this effect lasting at least 20 days after laying. Furthermore, in the outdoor trial rooting in the younger turf plots was more vigorous and dense compared to the older turf”.

The second trial went on to further confirm the notion of quicker, denser root growth for younger thinner cut turf. Samples of both were put side by side in the STRI’s rhizotron, a controlled environmental chamber, to view root growth over time under LED lights. Almost immediately the younger thinner cut turf rooted more quickly and densely and continued to do so consistently throughout the two-week trial.

The unanimous findings of both STRI trials are also reinforced by several pieces of research going back as far as the sixties, which showed that younger thinner turf displays better rooting capabilities, and that young roots are more likely to regrow after harvesting.

As the UK’s leading producer of high quality cultivated grass

turf, with sales of over 165 million rolls in its more than 40year history, Rolawn now has scientific evidence to prove that focusing on a younger thinner cut turf, which is technically superior because of accelerated root establishment, is the future. This enables the turf to have increased adaptability with greater suitability for the wide range of growing conditions found across the UK.

Younger thinner turf does have the capacity to be more active and this is an important element in why turf is so highly perishable once harvested. Active grass plants produce respiration gases that increase perishability and this is where Rolawn’s holistic and planned approach to turf production kicks in - problem solved with Rolawn’s unique patented Profresh ® system. Introduced in 2014, Profresh® uses advanced techniques which extend the shelf life of its turf by up to three or four times within commercially viable constraints.

Round Wood supplies winning stand at BBC Gardeners World Live!

Timber and garden feature specialists Round Wood of Mayfield recently helped one of their regular customers triumph in the “People’s Choice Award” at BBC Gardeners World Live.

The East Sussex-based company provided several striking

elements for Conquest Creative’s garden, which was voted by visitors as most popular in show.

Round Wood helped Conquest give the stand a contemporary edge with eco-friendly thermo treated cladding and decking, as well as supplying a striking oak

pergola and children’s swing from their oak framed building workshop.

The garden, which won for its creativity whilst being “easy to maintain”, making it ideal for its intended client, also impressed with its Round Woodsupplied corten steel planters, a contemporary choice thanks to its deep orange, weathered appearance.

The multi-functional, low maintenance garden space “ideally suited to a professional couple who’ve embarked upon early retirement with grown-up children that have fledged the family nest” also included an outdoor kitchen, boardwalk and lawn.

Other highlights included “elements for all seasons” with

granite stepping-stones across the grassed lawn with a reflection pool and a corner sunken seated fire pit.

Charcon joins the Birmingham cycle revolution

Charcon Hard Landscaping, a division of Aggregate Industries, has joined Birmingham’s Cycle Revolution by supplying 955l/m of its award-winning Cycle Kerb for the city’s new, multi-million pound cycle highway.

Birmingham City Council’s vision for its Cycle Revolution is to make cycling an everyday way to travel by improving road safety and cycling conditions, with 10% of all trips in the city to be made by bike by 2033.

The initiative includes creating high quality cycle routes on two key roads into Birmingham: the A34 and A38.

Amey, the company delivering the cycling infrastructure improvements in partnership with Birmingham City Council, have installed 299l/m of Charcon’s innovative Cycleway Segregation Unit to create the first section of a 4km, two-way, fully segregated route which shields cyclists from passing traffic, even when on the blind side of a lorry or bus.

The standard, high-performance segregation unit has been used for the majority of this section. And whilst it delivers visually, a new kerb featuring the aesthetics of granite was created especially for certain conservation areas which demanded enhanced visual appeal.

The bespoke design features a bull-nose edge running along the carriageway, capable of withstanding vehicular impact, while a full batter profile on

the cycleway side significantly reduces the chance of cyclists catching a pedal.

A frog in the base of the unit improves the key into the bedding material, facilitating a swift installation as the units can simply be dropped into place – an attractive design feature for contractors under pressure to minimise impact to traffic, residents and businesses while works are ongoing.

Mark Barter, Sales Director for Charcon, comments: “Due to the high traffic volumes coming into Birmingham city centre each day, the A34 could only close for four days to install the segregation unit. Having experience of delivering this type of product on a large scale before, we were able to confidently hit the ground running and ensure phase one of the project was delivered on time and within budget.”

Due to the swift delivery and installation of phase one, a further 656l/m of Charcon’s Cycleway Segregation Unit has been specified for phase two of the project.

Boultons Nurseries celebrate centenary by going peat-free

Boultons Nurseries, a wholesale bulk plant nursery providing plants all over the UK for over 100 years, supplies many of Britain’s most famous gardens and parks and has numerous long0standing customers.

As nurserymen, the company embraces new technology and have been at the forefront of modern growing techniques, with a significant shift to more environmentally friendly ways of peat free plant production.

For example, this year Boultons is celebrating 10 years as a ‘peatfree’ nursery. Peat has been used as a growing medium for decades, however, in recent years

growers have taken account of the impact on the environment.

Peat is sourced from lowland bogs – a natural habitat full of rich and diverse plants and wildlife. Unfortunately bogs

are disappearing across the UK and Europe, and as these rare habitats disappear, so will the flora growing there. Boultons are keen to help save these natural environments.

Boultons Nurseries have always been enthusiastic about peat free compost and the benefits to the environment.

The company has been searching for the appropriate mix that would help us work towards our aim – to provide peat free plants to the UK.

“Since making the decision to go peat-free we’ve been trialling many types of compost and

have been using our current bespoke compost from ICL since April 2015,” explained Richard Minton, of Boultons.

“Designed specifically with the intention of helping us grow a large variety of peat free plants, the mix enables us to have a far better spread of nutrients throughout the growing season.

Best of all, it allows us better control of the release of these nutrients.

The compost behaves well at the potting stage and ‘wets up’ quickly on the first watering after potting (which is vital for a good start).

The top surface stays relatively dry which helps against any liverwort build up in the future.

“By using our new compost we can deliver environmentally friendly peat free plants, throughout the UK from our nursery located in the heart of the country.

“We do our own propagation where possible ensuring a range of ‘British Grown’ plants. Shrubs are available throughout the year, with a planned programme of herbaceous plants flowering throughout the main growing season. Boultons have many contacts with other nurseries enabling reciprocal trading and are able to source alpines, herbs, heathers, trees, bulbs and bedding.

“Our main areas of supply are Local Authorities, garden centres, large estates, The

National Trust (who only buy peat-free plants), new house builds and landscapers.

“Landscape Architects and specifiers should consider ‘peatfree’ to ensure environmental considerations are achieved within any projects they are involved with, helping clients achieve carbon footprint requirements.”

Boultons remain committed to improving all aspects of growing plants in an environmentally friendly way, from using peat free compost, re-useable pots and natural pest control while still achieving the high standards and quality plants expected by our customers.

Multi-purpose remote control mini tractor from Spaldings handles winching and flail mowing

A remote controlled mini tracked tractor with a built-in logging winch that can be replaced by a flail mower for vegetation control has been introduced by Spaldings following the company’s appointment as national dealer in the UK and Ireland for Pfanzelt forestry and estate management machinery.

The Pfanzelt Moritz Fr50 rubber tracked vehicle is designed for easy mobility and for working in locations that are difficult to

access, are too delicate for fullsize machines or where there are dangers for an on-board operator.

The vehicle weighs 1400kg, is 2.2m long and stands just 1.2m tall. It is powered by a 35hp diesel engine and has hydrostatic drive.

“In standard form, the Moritz carries a two-speed cable winch with a heavy-duty logging plate,” points out Paul Denton. “But the winch can be replaced by a

1.2m flail mower on the Cat I linkage to extend the machine’s workload.”

The relatively low weight and 1.1m overall width means the Moritz Fr50 can be transported by trailer behind a 4x4, pick-up or van to work sites such as steep woodland or grass embankments where the track spacing can be widened hydraulically by up to 400mm for maximum stability.

“We envisage a contractor using the Moritz for woodland and embankment vegetation control or to provide tension for controlled direction felling where trees have to be cut down in a confined location,” says Paul Denton.

“Skidding felled trees from woodland and dealing with light brash and vegetation are also within its scope, and Pfanzelt is planning a stump grinder attachment.”

Remote control of all functions means these tasks can be carried

out with maximum safety for the operator, who also has the convenience of a large storage compartment within the chassis for all the tools and equipment needed for each job.

German manufacturer Pfanzelt is a family-owned concern that specialises in forestry and woodland equipment; it also manufactures timber cranes and trailers, forest tractors and self-propelled timber harvesting forwarders.

Pfanzelt’s tractor-mounted and self-propelled winches have been selected by Spaldings, the direct sales specialist, to complement the TMC Cancela heavy duty scrub mowers and forestry shredders that the company also distributes.

In the UK and Ireland, Pfanzelt machines will be supported by Spaldings’ own service back-up team.

Isuzu Grafter Green proves to be the ‘smart’ choice

Following the successful performance of their first four Isuzu Grafters, Midlands sister companies Smart Cut Ltd and TFN Landscapes have now purchased a further 10 of the latest Isuzu Grafter Green 3.5 tonne rigids.

These are joining the 40-strong combined vehicle fleet on a progressive basis from May to October this year.

Now representing over 35% of the Smart Cut and TFN fleets, the Isuzu N35.125 Grafter Green rigids have become the ‘go to’ marque for commercial vehicles

at these Midlands companies, progressively replacing the incumbent Nissan Cabstars. According to Smart Cut and TFN, their aim is to become an exclusively Isuzu fleet by the end of 2019.

All 10 Isuzu N35.125 Grafter Greens being supplied to Smart Cut and TFN Landscapes during 2018 feature the popular Isuzu Driveaway TGS dropside body configuration.

The new Isuzu Grafter Green rigids are expected to cover a maximum of 40,000 miles in their two year working life within the fleet at Smart Cut and TFN Landscapes and have been supplied by local Isuzu dealer Aquila Truck Centre in Worcester, who have worked closely with them to provide the ideal specification for their various business operations.

Kubota UK and Partingtons Holiday Parks make the perfect pair

With over 2,000 pitches for touring, holiday and residential mobile homes spread across seven different sites throughout the UK, Partingtons Holiday Parks is a nationwide leisure company that has firmly established itself as a popular household name.

Celebrating its 75th anniversary next year, the successful business is overseen by the 4th generation of the Partington family.

Robert Partington Kearsley and his sister Andrea Challis run the business and employ over 250 individuals as part of their ‘family first’ approach.

With six Visit England accredited holiday sites and one residential site in the Partingtons portfolio, it’s imperative that each park is kept in the best condition possible to ensure visitors continue to return year after year.

This is a challenge Robert and Andrea’s grounds maintenance teams face on a daily basis and easily achieve through their longstanding relationship with high quality suppliers, working

closely with Kubota and local dealer Dennis Barnfield over the last 15 years.

Currently boasting a 25 strong Kubota fleet, maintenance of the various sites is headed up by each individual park manager and their dedicated grounds maintenance teams.

Speaking of the partnership, Robert said: “With seven different parks to contend with, it’s vital that our grounds maintenance is consistent across the board to ensure we achieve the highest standard at every park.”

“The service we receive from Dennis Barnfield and the varying models of quality Kubota machinery they provide, ensures each of the sites are kept in premium condition.”

From transporting seven tonne caravans across the park to mowing and mulching of the lawns, Kubota machinery plays an essential role in the running of the sites.

The parks have been home to a multitude of machines over

the years, with its current fleet including a number of G Series high dump mowers and F Series ride on mowers for regular grass cutting.

For the more heavy duty site work, two L Series compact utility tractors, four larger scale M6040 tractors and two L3200 tractors are used to help the maintenance teams move the holiday homes and complete essential upkeep.

With such substantial loads to transport across the parks, the high performance tractors are the perfect solution for the task, safely and carefully helping the team to transport the caravans around the site.

The sites are also home to five recently acquired RTVX1140’s. Robert continued: “We recently purchased the new RTVs because the option to have an additional two seats in the back or a larger cargo bed is useful for the team when transporting equipment around the vast sites.

The RTV-X900 we previously purchased was so robust and resilient that I knew we needed more Kubota RTVs to help the maintenance team complete their tasks easier and quicker.

“Past generations of the Partington family has used Kubota machinery for decades based on the quality and reliability of the brand, as well as its first class aftersales services.

Our confidence in the performance of the machines means that Andrea and I have one less thing to worry about as we know the maintenance of the sites will continue to run like clockwork.”

Complete DLF range is good enough for Goodwood

The Goodwood Estate relies on mixtures from across the DLF Seeds portfolio to deliver results site-wide.

With a remit including two 18-hole golf courses, a cricket ground, gardens, an airfield, a racecourse and a motor circuit, General Manager of Sports Turf & Grounds, Phil Helmn, is certainly kept busy with such a momentous breadth of surfaces to prepare.

Joining the Goodwood Estate four years ago, from a greenkeeping background, has seen a steep but fascinating learning curve for Phil: “What’s really interesting is how every environment has such different performance criteria so I’ve taken a lot of guidance and advice from companies and distributors, DLF being one of them.”

As a long-standing user of seed from DLF’s Masterline and Johnsons Sports Seed mixtures, introducing those across the estate was one of Phil’s first exercises. “Ryegrass is the primary species used across the estate because of its hardwearing qualities and quick germination making it suitable on a wide variety of sports and fi ne turf areas. On

Johnsons J Premier Wicket features a four-cultivar blend of Clementine, Monroe, Dickens and Chardin perennial ryegrass and delivers outstanding shoot density, rapid establishment and high disease resistance. In terms of its usage, Goodwood’s cricket ground has seen a surge in popularity, which is driving investment into the facilities later this year. “We currently host lots of local league matches but developments on one of the wickets will hopefully see that prepared to a higher spec with the J Premier Wicket, along

with a £1m new pavilion,

“On our golf greens, we’re currently on a bent grass overseeding programme and over on the grass airfield, which has a resident academy of three Spitfires, we’re using the hardwearing ProMaster 70 mixture from Masterline. With so many sports arenas, there’s always new challenges, and peaks and troughs in demand, which keeps you on your toes. The seed from DLF gives us one constant we can rely on.”

Anderton Concrete boasts short lead times for fencing

Anderton Concrete says it is bucking the industry trend for long delivery times, thus ensuring its customers’ projects are not delayed. The company, part of Ibstock plc, can deliver to customers within 2-3 days from ordering. This allows Anderton to provide its customers with continuity of supply so they

can take advantage of the sales opportunities which come their way. This will place them in a competitive position as the traditional sales season looks set to be extended thanks to the recent good weather.

Goodwood estate goes Toro

Goodwood has returned to Toro as it continues in its ambition to develop a ‘super fleet’ for its 12,000-acre Sussex estate.

Such a large enterprise as Goodwood comes with a wide set of challenges and having a Toro ‘super fleet’ means that the 35-strong turf and gardens maintenance team. It also enables three e 3 strong mechanics team to become Toro-trained to a high standard to limit sub-contracting and out-sourcing.

It makes sense then that included in the order of three Groundsmaster 3500-D mowers, a Groundsmaster 4300-D, two Groundsmaster 5910 mowers, and two UTVs – the GTX and MDX-D, along with the two

Groundsmaster 5910 is the new MyTurf servicing system.

The Pro fleet management program, myTurf, operates by automatically recording how long the machines have been in

operation and how many hours they have accrued when they re-enter the maintenance facility and pass a sensor at the door.

This allows the mechanics to calculate preventative

maintenance and replacement parts needed, and machine history can be accessed by simply logging in to the system on a computer.

Attachments are a key to success

Peter Pattenden, the Golf Courses and Estates Manager at Carden Park since 2006, appreciates the benefits of the Ventrac 4500 compact tractor he purchased back in 2017. So much so, that he has recently purchased a second machine. The initial machine was delivered with a selection of accessories including Contour deck, Tough Cut deck, Stump Grinder, Edger, Blower and Power Broom.

“I manage a team of 23 staff here and at Carden Hall, which

includes one forester, one mechanic, two estate workers, three seasonals, six gardeners, and 10 greenkeepers,” he said.

“Every piece of equipment we buy has to earn its keep and this Ventrac certainly falls into this category. The Ventrac is the perfect size, not too heavy, so we can use it in the winter months and not too light that it can’t handle the implements.”

R-VAN fully adjustable rotary nozzles set new performance standards

For highly efficient irrigation of both large and smaller areas in residential and commercial applications, Rain Bird now offers a full range of R-VAN rotary adjustable, full circle and strip nozzles. Coupled with fast installation and simple maintenance – no tools

required - R-VAN nozzles set new standards in performance, with just nine models required for full 45 to 360 degree coverage and ranges from 2.4 to 7.3 metres. This compares to up to fifteen if alternative brands of nozzles were to be specified, keeping investment costs lower from the outset.

All R-VAN nozzles can be quickly hand adjusted for arc and radius. Simply by pushing down and turning the nozzle cap, the arc can be increased by up to 270 degrees and by turning the radius adjustment dial clockwise, the throw distance is increased without needing to use a separate adjustment tool. With these two actions, areas of any shape can be effectively irrigated.

Latest health and safety guidelines for turf professionals ‘could save lives’

The Greenkeepers Training Committee (GTC) has launched a free-to-use web-based platform created by the Xact Group that aims to ensure golf club employers un¬derstand their roles and responsibilities towards health and safety with regard to golf course maintenance.

In 2017, the GTC’s Board of Directors commissioned a review of the highly-acclaimed Health and Safety Guidance Notes and the committee is pleased to announce the release of the updated guidelines.

The GTC first worked together with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in 1994 to produce the first edition of the Health and Safety in Golf Course

Management and Maintenance booklet. By 2000, the health and safety consultants to the GTC, Jon Allbutt and John Davies, were commissioned to review the materials, in line with the many changes in legislation that were happening at that time.

While much of the guidance and best practice was still relevant, the GTC felt it appropriate to review and update and refresh the look and accessibility of the guidance notes.

GTC Chairman Alistair Booth said: “The aim of the newlypublished guidance notes has been to give anyone at a golf club, or associated with a golf club, an overview of their roles and responsibilities towards health and safety and best practice. They have been moved to a web-based platform, making them easier for everyone to access.

Preventative fungicide treatments excel in STRI research trials

Recent STRI research trials prove that preventative disease control programmes outperform curative options when analysed for turf quality, colour and presence of Microdochium Patch.

STRI research manager, Mark Ferguson, explains these results and stresses the importance of preventative programmes in light of the recent loss of curative active ingredient iprodione.

“When measuring disease presence, the STRI team looked specifically at the level of

Microdochium Patch cover on the plots. As expected, the preventative treatments performed significantly better than the curative ones.

“The trials ran over the course of eight months, comparing nine preventative and three curative programmes, as well as one untreated plot.

“The first three programmes used purely preventative fungicides from Bayer. “

Club finds BLEC

Multiseeder creates minimum disruption to course

Set within Scotland’s Golf Coast, the 18 hole links course at Dunbar Golf Club demands accuracy and judgement as play follows natural contours and a rocky shoreline.

Currently in the middle of a sward conversion programme, Course Manager Paul Armour recently took delivery of a BLEC Multiseeder, allowing him to increase the frequency of overseeding whilst leaving minimal disruption on the greens.

“At present the greens are a mix of fescue/bent and poa, and our aim is to increase the fescue population” explains Paul, who has been at the club for just over 2 years. “We were previously using a disc seeder which left lines in the greens meaning we were restricted to only overseeding between competitions.”

On the back of recommendations from his colleagues, Paul had a demonstration of a BLEC Multiseeder with Ian Lauder of Charterhouse Turf Machinery and local dealers Henderson Grass Machinery.

“The main idea of moving over to Multiseeder was that it’s a

dimple seeder which leaves much less disruption on the greens, keeping the golfers and visitors happy. This means we can get out with it more frequently throughout the season.”

Though restricted by the unusually dry weather throughout the summer, Paul and his team of eight have already covered all 18 greens since they took delivery of the Multiseeder in April, with imminent plans to cover eight again when the weather allows, and all 18 once again at the back end of the year.

“With this machine we get fantastic accuracy with the quantity of seed distribution, so by simply adjusting the rate I know exactly what I’m going to get. The spiked rollers follow the contours, and with the precision of seed delivery, we’re achieving good levels of germination. The installation and training delivered by Henderson’s was fantastic and we know they’re at the end of the phone if we need them – but so far we’ve had no need to call.”

Merchant Taylors’ continue to choose Dennis

After a complete fleet renewal at Merchant Taylors’ School, grounds manager Richard Ayling has continued to put his trust in Dennis by purchasing a G860 and a G30D cylinder mower to add to the two G860’s and Razor mowers the school already had.

There are over 80 acres of magnificent playing fields with an additional 200 acres of estates providing outstanding opportunities for a wide range of sports including rugby, football, hockey and cricket.

The new Dennis G860 cylinder mower is lightweight at just 166kg; easy to manoeuvre and comfortable to operate. The

handlebar console houses the controls for - throttle, parking brake, roller drive and cutting cylinder drive.

The mower also features a large diameter front roller with an adjustable scraper which has been designed for a precise height of cut control, giving an excellent finish on every occasion.

The Dennis G860 also features an interchangeable cassette system to assist with a wide range of tasks which gives Richard the ability to use the G860 across more than one sports pitch.

With over 30 acres of lawns and other grass areas to maintain, Richard completed his Dennis

line-up with the purchase of a Dennis G30D cylinder mower.

Designed and built following the same concept as the Dennis G860, the G30D incorporates

H2Pro key to Lansdowne’s moisture management programme

The Lansdowne course at Blairgowrie Golf Club in Perthshire, Scotland has seen huge benefits since using a range of ICL’s H2Pro moisture management products –according to Course Manager Craig Stewart.

Craig Stewart is the man responsible for maintaining the magnificent championship course and has six full-time staff with two seasonal workers alongside him. As a long-term user of ICL products, Craig first started applying the H2Pro range of products five years ago after a successful trial.

“Essentially, our aim was to keep the surface and the profile dry on the greens and approaches throughout winter. We tried a few products and then Jamie Lees (ICL Technical Area Sales Manager, Scotland) suggested trialling H2Pro TriSmart. We trialled it for two months in the middle of that summer, saw great results and we just carried on from there. I like

the fact that you can go from TriSmart to FlowSmart carrying on the moisture management programme all through the year.”

Craig first applies H2ProTriSmart in April at a rate of 10L/ha. He continues with monthly applications before switching to H2Pro FlowSmart in September or October depending on the weather conditions.

“As soon as the weather begins to change and it turns a bit cooler then we know that it is time to switch to FlowSmart. We then use that for as long as it’s needed just to pull the moisture through the surface and the profile to dry the greens out.

“It is such a flexible programme and you can tailor it to your everyday conditions rather than having a fixed plan. If we get a wet spring or summer then we use FlowSmart until it starts to dry up a bit and then we switch back over to TriSmart, but it can work both ways.

“We’ve also noticed a big reduction in irrigation and hand watering. Since using H2Pro TriSmart we very seldom use another wetting agent because quite simply we have no need. It is labour saving because we no longer have guys out with hoses looking for dry patches on the greens and of course we are saving money on water usage too.”

The H2Pro range of products are not the only ICL products that Craig uses and he gave his reasons as to why the company plays such big role in his maintenance procedures.

a large-diameter eight bladed cutting cylinder to cater for a wide range of uses to leave a precise cut.

“The majority of the products we use at Lansdowne are from ICL. Jamie helps me put a programme together every year and if we ever have any problems then he is always around for support. From a technical point of view, I just cannot fault the advice I get.

“We know the amount of money and research that goes into their products and I think that gives you confidence. Every product is consistently good. For example, when we get a bag of fertilizer from ICL we know exactly what we are getting - it is always consistent.”

New E2 Pro Elicitor from Sherriff Amenity

Sherriff Amenity has announced the launch of E2 Pro Elicitor - a new unique soluble plant biostimulant which contains Harpin aβ.

E2 Pro from Sherriff Amenity is a brand of turf care products which is viewed as being synonymous with quality, and the ever-expanding portfolio features a range of both high performing water soluble and liquid fertilisers. There are currently five different

analyses within the water soluble range and eight in the liquid portfolio, ensuring that there is a solution to suit a wide range of nutrient requirements throughout the year.

Elicitor is the latest product to be welcomed to the E2 Pro family and by all accounts it appears that turf managers will be more than pleased with addition.

This unique soluble biostimulant contains an elicitor that

Additional Ventrac attachments to maintain world class training centre

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club continues to invest in their world-class training centre with the recent purchase of additional attachments for their Ventrac 4500 compact tractor.

Darren Baldwin, Head of Playing Surfaces and Estates at the club, has taken delivery of two Ventrac Power Brooms for maintaining the pathways, car parking areas and synthetic pitches around the impressive 77-acre training facility.

Commenting on the new equipment he said: “These

brooms are excellent; they simply blitz any moss on our tarmac pathways, remove moss, weeds and leaves from the blockpaved areas and we use one on synthetic grass pitches. The height adjustment is simple and quick and it gets the debris out, where other brushes have failed.

“Our second broom has more flexible and less aggressive bristles and this is used on the synthetics; it helps us relieve the compaction of the rubber crumb infill and is an integral part of our synthetic turf maintenance programme.”

The Power Brooms can be hydraulically angled left or right and lifted up or down all from the seat of the tractor. An electric actuator also allows the operator to adjust the speed and direction of the broom rotation, maximizing its effectiveness. A self-leveling feature keeps the broom horizontal at all times, and the nylon bristle broom cores can be changed in just a few minutes.

stimulates gene expression in plants, delivering improved abiotic stress tolerance and better plant growth. Elicitors are known to activate a variety of biosynthetic pathways within the plant and the inclusion of Harpin aβ can significantly enhance results. Rigorous trial work has concluded that Harpin aβ specifically stimulates plant growth (above and below ground), nutrient absorption and tolerance to abiotic stress, including drought,

temperature stress and pesticide detoxification. Further benefits include increased photosynthesis and enhanced root development.

Harpins are acidic, heat-stable, glycine-rich proteins produced by Gram-negative bacteria, which trigger defence responses in diverse plant species. When applied as a foliar spray, the Harpin proteins bind to plant receptors, initiating jasmonic acid and ethylene dependent signalling pathways; known

First for rugby as Emerald Headingley Stadium takes delivery of INFINICUT mowers

Cub Cadet INFINICUT mowers make it a ‘first’ for Emerald Headingley Stadium in Leeds.

Home to both Rugby Union and Rugby League, the club is currently in the midst of a £41m redevelopment and the INFINICUT purchase is a ‘first’ for a rugby club in the UK. However, these aren’t the only new additions for Head Groundsman Ryan Golding to contend with as the redevelopment includes two new stands.

“I’ve demonstrated the INFINICUT previously and had been impressed with it, and after a few conversations with Vinny Tarbox of MTD, it was evident the mowers could make a big difference to the quality of our playing surface,” he explained.

“The fact the INFINICUT’s can be powered electrically went a long way in making a viable case. The reduced noise, as well as emissions, it produces have meant that despite our inner-city location, we have been able to mow

earlier in the mornings and therefore cope better with the recent hot conditions.”

Following their delivery in June 2018, the mowers are in use three to four times a week, including in the build-up to games, thanks to the cleanliness of cut and quality of finish they produce. With the work ongoing and play continuing throughout, Ryan’s favourite feature however, is something else.

as a Hypersensitive Response (HR). Harpins induce the expression of genes involved in cell wall development, cellular communication, and signalling and defence responses.

Harpin aβ proteins can be applied as either a seed treatment, or as a foliar spray. When used as a foliar spray, application every 3-4 weeks during growth is recommended. As Harpin aβ activates genes within the plant, there is no requirement

for full coverage at the time of application. Once the genes are activated, the plant response is initiated within 24 hours.

The New ISEKI SF224 and SF235 are high performance out-front collector mowers.

A class leading, turbine driven, 950 litre collector combined with either 54” or 60” mower decks, ensures highly productive grass cutting and collection in wet or dry conditions.

When full it can be emptied at any height upto 2125mm. Belt-free mower decks and easy access service items simplify maintenance and increasing productivity.

It never rains but it pours

Pontarddulais Bowls Club and Graig Merthyr Bowls Club share the same council-owned green in Coedbach Park, Pontarddulais, Swansea.

The green there has seen around ninety years of play and until early in 2018 had always been free draining, with regular treatment such as Vertidraining, although it had become noticeable the green was changing.

Club Treasurer Bryan Gillard remembered reading about Terrain Aeration’s treatment for bowling greens and sports pitches and invited the specialist aeration company to come along and advise on the situation.

It became immediately clear that much deeper aeration was needed than the usual Vertidraining, to relieve the compaction and panning beneath the surface. Bryan sought approval from Swansea City Council and with the help of two local councillors the funds were raised to do the work in March 2018.

Terrain Aeration’s deep penetration aeration system uses their Terralift machine to drive a probe one metre deep into the soil, through the

compaction, where it releases a blast of compressed air, fracturing the soil

On the tail end of the air blast dried seaweed is injected, which sticks to the walls of the fissures. This is finished with the probe hole being filled with porous Lytag aggregate and topped with the usual top dressing. Here the seaweed will remain, swelling and contracting with the moisture in the soil, maintaining the aeration, drainage and allowing oxygen to get to the roots. In some instances water-storing polymers may also be added with the seaweed

The process is repeated over a staggered grid every two metres to ensure the fissures are fully interlinked.

The result is immediate and vastly improved draining, allowing play to commence straight away.

AMS scores with pitch care mowing

Automated Managed Services Ltd (AMS) is the UK’s official distributors for Belrobotics robots and offers a contract based robotic maintenance service solution for turf care. Looking to build on its unrivalled success in the golf industry, which incorporated automated outfield mowing and ball management into all-in-one service solution for driving ranges.

AMS kick starts its expansion into sport pitch/field care with upcoming installations at Barking FC and Halesowen FC.

These football clubs will be home to the new BigMow Connected Line robotic mower, released into the UK market in April of this year it will be showcased at this years SALTEX show.

Its features include a large working area capacity of 24,000 m 2, up from the 20,000m 2 coverage offered by its predecessor the BigMow Classic. Design improvements to the shell/body design contribute to low noise level output of 52db. It has five sonars used to navigate its surroundings and to perform

effective obstacle avoidance. A Belrobotics smartphone app has also been introduced to allow customers to programme mowing schedules and monitor performance.

With 45 plus robot locations across the UK, a single BigMow robotic mower can mow a pitch 5 to 7 times per week and imposes no stress to the grass due to its lightweight design. It has 15 razor sharp blades that trim the top of the grass into tiny clippings, which then decompose quickly acting as a

natural fertiliser. This in turn reduces the need for chemical fertilisers and frees up personnel to focus on other aspects of pitch care. The BigMow’s manicure style mulching also means there is no green waste to collect, store or remove.

Additionally due to a regular mowing schedule, the grass roots grip is strengthen allowing better anchoring into the soil. Creating a denser sward that is better resistant to wear and tear.

Otterbine and Toro irrigation involved in hole refresh at John O’Gaunt

When it was time for a hole four refresh at Bedfordshire’s John O’Gaunt Golf Club the par three hole on the John O’Gaunt course was enhanced by a 1500m 2 lake with two Otterbine fountains and eight Toro Infinity sprinklers.

Course manager Nigel Broadwith and head greenkeeper Kevin Armstrong, chose two Otterbine Sunburst aerating fountains, from UK distributor Reesink Turfcare.

Both are three horsepower units but one has a one horsepower impeller for the smaller end of the lake and the other has a two horsepower impeller for the wider end. The reasons for these choices were primarily aeration, to the keep the water clean and clear all year round, and secondarily for aesthetic purposes.

Four years ago, John O’Gaunt’s Carthagena course had its irrigation system updated to

Toro Lynx and Golf Decoder Controller irrigation system, operated with dual trajectory series full or part circle sprinklers, and as that concluded it became the turn of the John O’Gaunt course. This time Nigel chose Infinity:

“The system on Carthagena has performed brilliantly,” he says. “It was always the plan that we would move straight on to updating the John

O’Gaunt course sprinklers after Carthagena, and as we finished Infinity launched in the UK. I was immediately impressed with their accessibility for maintenance and made the decision that we should try this new technology on the John O’Gaunt course.”

The addition of four Infinity sprinklers on the fairways and four on the greens too, means that Nigel is half way through renovating the 18 holes on the John O’Gaunt course with Infinity. Nigel says he aims to have the remaining nine updated within the next three years.

According to Robert Jackson, irrigation field sales manager at Reesink, this is a classic example of how the little things can make big differences, he says: “The inclusion of a fountain in a new or existing lake can so easily elevate it to being a beauty spot.

“Similarly, the John O’Gaunt course installation shows how innovation through renovation can be easily and gradually applied to an irrigation system.”

Ecoplug Max prevents re-growth in Yorkshire

Martin Lingard, Contracts Manager for Lowther Forestry, has reported that ICL’s Ecoplug Max is helping him manage an extensive tree and shrub clearance project throughout Yorkshire.

Lowther Forestry – a nationwide forestry, landscaping and fencing contractor was established in 1979 and now has four regional

offices. Over the years the company has significantly grown and prides itself on providing exceptional quality, value and sustainability to businesses and organisations throughout the United Kingdom.

Martin Lingard has been with the company for 19 years and after looking for an alternative to liquid glyphosate for stump control, he turned to Ecoplug Max – which he purchased through ICL distributor Green-tech.

Ecoplug Max is a patented tree stump control application method which delivers glyphosate directly into the tree stump, killing its root system and preventing re-growth.

Each plug contains 300mg of granular glyphosate which are simply placed into holes drilled into the stump using the Ecoplug drill bit. The plugs are then hammered in forcing out the sides of the

Lightweight, Plantex Platinium is available in widths of 2.5m and of 5m which requires fewer joints when covering large surface areas, thus reducing labour time and minimising potential points of vulnerability. (Installation guidelines should be carefully followed.)

• Exceptional resistance to damage or tearing, which is particularly important during installation. Furthermore, the high integral strength of Plantex Platinium ensures that the strands and filaments of the fabric will not fray or become displaced once installed.

• Excellent water permeability

which prevents the build-up of differential hydrostatic pressures, as can occur with a closed membrane system, and eliminates the need for additional drainage systems.

• This highly effective water vapour and air permeability also supports the balance and natural processes of condensation and flow in the covered soil, avoiding mildew growth from trapped humidity beneath the fabric, so reducing any greenhouse effect and improving soil health.

• Offer a vital solution to EU regulations and UK HSE. Both UK and EU regulations will very likely limit or even prohibit the use of pesticides

in the near future. Today, there is increasing awareness of the value of Plantex Platinium as an economical, ecological and aesthetic solution for the protection of sensitive areas such as drinking water zones.

Alongside this typical-use offering, DuPont now also offers

a specialised version of the fabric called Plantex Platinium Solar. This product is dedicated to uncovered applications such as solar farms, or other such sensitive technical installations, where weed control presents particular challenges or can cause safety issues.

Emergency Authorisation for new Acelepryn soil pest control

plug, releasing the glyphosate into the phloem.

“We have been using Ecoplug Max for the past few years as part of a tree and shrub clearance project for the Environment Agency,” says Martin. Based on the work last year we have seen fantastic results - we’ve had no comeback or re-growth of willows.”

Ecoplug Max supports requirements of the sustainable use directive to minimise use of pesticides. With the glyphosate encapsulated inside the unit, it never gets in direct contact with anything else but the plant, in turn minimizing the risk of the operator coming into contact with chemical or chemical spillage. Furthermore, it also eliminates the risk of damage to surrounding trees and vegetation. Quite simply, it stays where it belongs – inside the plant.

An Emergency Authorisation has been granted for the use of the Syngenta insecticide, Acelepryn, for the control of Chafer grubs and leatherjacket on golf course greens and tees, horse racing courses and airfields.

The approval was applied for by STRI, on behalf of and with support from the amenity industry. Chafer Grubs and leatherjackets cause damage to turf through extensive feeding on roots, which can be severe in localised patches. Furthermore, extreme damage can occur when badgers, birds and other foragers root through turf in search of the grubs.

The Emergency Authorisation permits Acelepryn use in situations where there is an acknowledged instance of economic damage and where the product has been recommended by a BASIS qualified advisor.

With the loss of available control options independent advisors, ADAS, has calculated

the economic cost of Chafer Grubs alone at up to £85 million a year for golf courses in the UK, from lost income and damage repair. The report also highlighted that on the 40% of racecourses affected by the pest’s damage, lost income could amount to up to £605,000 per course.

“Since the withdrawal of effective insecticides, economic damage from chafer grubs and leatherjackets has been of major concern to many of us,” reported STRI Head of Research, Dr Ruth Mann.

“Obtaining this Emergency Authorisation of Acelepryn enables us to manage the most damaging effects of these soil pests as part of an integrated turf management programme.”

The UK Emergency Authorisation for Acelepryn has been granted from 7 June to 30 September 2018, to cover the key Chafer Grub and leatherjacket treatment timing.

The Emergency Authorisation covers golf greens and tees, horse racing courses and airfields, specifically where there has been a history of pest damage or a recognised risk of damage. In all instances the use of Acelepryn must be recommended by a BASIS qualified agronomist.

The authorised label permits application at the rate of 0.6 litres per hectare, applied in 500-1000 l/ha water. Ideally Acelepryn should irrigated in after application. One application per year is permitted, with the latest time of treatment being 30 September.

Turf managers or owners who believe they have suffered economically damaging effects of Chafer grubs and leatherjackets are advised to contact their BASIS agronomist or ICL Area Manager in the first instance.

Weedingtech expands into New Zealand

Weedingtech, manufacturer of the leading herbicide-free weed control solution, Foamstream, has expanded in to its third continent with its patented Foamstream process and machinery now available in New Zealand.

The expansion has happened in partnership with Matt Kirby, who is MD of WeedingtechNew Zealand and is responsible for setting up the Weedingtech offering in his country.

This has come about as demand for herbicide-free alternatives across the world increases as public and private entities look to move away from using traditional methods of weed control like the herbicide glyphosate, in favour of greener alternatives.

by municipalities around the world across North America and Europe by notable clients such as Central Park, NYC, City of Munich and London Boroughs of Hammersmith and Fulham.

The process works to kill unwanted vegetation including moss and algae by insulating hot water using a bio-degradable foam made from natural plant oils and sugars.

BASIS celebrates its 40th anniversary

The future of disease prevention

With the removal of key active ingredients, turf disease management will have to focus on prevention rather than cure.

Strategies will have to be introduced that involve early identification, local knowledge of the conditions that are conducive to their development and historical records that could identify where an outbreak may occur.

This proactive approach will allow for a preventative fungicide to be applied prior to damage occurring. The majority of turf diseases, once they are visible

to the naked eye, have already caused damage to turf tissue. If fungicides are applied at this stage they can only limit further spread of the disease, therefore, the adoption of a preventative programme is critical to success.

Rigby Taylor has produced a free, interactive Fungicide Programme Wall Calendar with removal ‘stickers’, supported by a 12-page brochure containing 11 different fungicide programme packages with 5 different modes of action.

Weedingtech’s CEO, Leo de Montaignac spoke of the partnership: “Never has there been a better time to implement herbicide-free solutions in to public spaces. Great pressure is amounting from the public and legislation for change.”

Foamstream is a patented process which is already being used

The foam acts as a blanket over the hot water, trapping the heat on the plant for longer, keeping it in the critical temperature zone (57 oC and above) to deliver the most effective kill of the vegetation. It sterilises surrounding seeds and spores, leading to reduced future regrowth.

Due to its highly effective process, operators need to apply Foamstream fewer times per year than any other alternative method, bringing great cost savings and labour efficiencies to the organisations using it.

Standard setting, training and auditing organisation, BASIS Registration, is celebrating its 40th year of service to agricultural and related industries throughout 2018. This key milestone is a testament to the developing industry, proving that training and continued development is not only essential for production, but it’s here to stay, as the need for increased knowledge across the board grows. To showcase the past four decades of both the organisation and the industry, Stephen Jacob, BASIS CEO, looks back to 1978 when BASIS was founded to regulate agrochemical suppliers and advisers.

“One key player in the organisation’s development was former chief executive, Barrie Orme, who instigated the examination and training side, for which it is now so well known,” says Stephen. Once this was well established, Barrie saw the further need for ongoing professional development for agronomists to keep abreast of developments in crop protection, so set about launching the highly regarded BASIS Professional Register to meet this need in the early 1990’s.”

Stephen goes on to explain that the role of an adviser has also changed over time, so BASIS continually updates its courses and syllabuses and ensures that CPD points can be obtained on an array of topic areas.

“While Integrated Pest Management recommendations

are still key, advisers now have a much wider remit, offering assistance with all aspects of agronomy from variety choices to soil quality improvement or wildlife enhancement on farms.”

Hazel Doonan, AIC sector head of crop protection, backs this point, highlighting the need for a good understanding of soil management for improved productivity and sustainability. She adds that training and recognised qualifications are also important for the wider image of agriculture.

“The fact that agronomists are qualified and undertake CPD demonstrates and reassures the public that plant protection products, when required, are only recommended by professionals who have assessed the need very carefully. Going forward, training and CPD will continue to be a high priority to help agronomists stay up-to-date with new developments in all aspects of their work. So, it’s important that course content and delivery is regularly reviewed, and all parties can access relevant training,” says Hazel.

Because of these ongoing new developments, BASIS plans to stay ahead of the curve with its ‘2020 digital transformation project’. This will bring improved efficiency and service to stakeholders while enhancing member benefits, to continue to support the industry in years to come.

Redexim helps contractors to improve efficiency

The latest addition to their vast fleet of machinery at South Wales Sports Grounds (SWSG) is a Redexim Verti-Top 1200 from Charterhouse Turf Machinery.

SWSG undertake a wide variety of grounds maintenance contracts for a range of clients

from local authorities, major contracting groups, universities and colleges through to individual sports clubs and private clients - with no two days bringing the same tasks and demands.

The Verti-Top conducts surface and deep-cleaning, utilising a rotary brush to lift the pile and extract up to the top 15mm of infill and foreign material.

The infill is then sieved to remove dust and detritus before being returned and brushed into the surface leaving a clean, level and aesthetically pleasing finish.

The company has noticed a better quality of finish, and at 1.2m, its wider working width than our previous machine means efficiency has also improved.

Hove haven gets upgraded 3G pitch

Effective drainage is ‘paramount’ to pitch perfect performance of 3G sports surfaces

Ltd manufactured and provided 225m of its Duo8 Super Rebound sports fencing system plus two pairs of double gates and one single leaf pedestrian gate.

With the UK’s leading sporting associations continuing to invest heavily in 3G astroturf sports pitches, Aggregate Industries is reminding contractors that effective drainage has never been more important to the successful design and management of these all-weather surfaces.

supported by an infill rubber crumb and a thin layer of sand.

The project consisted of the resurfacing of an existing Artificial Grass Pitch (AGP) with a modern 3G artificial grass surface, fencing, pitch divider, sports equipment & associated works.

AGPs are commonly Astroturf, but ETC combine this surface with their 3G surface to make a more durable pitch that is all-weather.

ETC worked alongside Desso Sports UK, who supplied the iQ3 50 artificial grass, while Zaun

Duo8 Super Rebound forms a robust play area that is highly durable, low maintenance and ‘graffiti-proof’, with great rebound properties similar to a wall and rubber inserts between panels and posts to keep ‘rattle’ during play to a minimum.

The 3G football surface is growing in popularity among clubs and schools as one of the best synthetic pitches.

SISIS Flexicomb extends pitch life at UKC

Lee Ballard, senior groundsperson at the University of Kent (UKC) in Canterbury, believes that his new SISIS Flexicomb is the perfect tool to help extend the life of one of the University’s synthetic sports surfaces.

Overseeing the maintenance of the sports pitches is Lee Ballard, who admits that one of the synthetic surfaces requires extra special attention due to its age and heavy usage.

Designed primarily for use on synthetic surfaces, the Flexicomb ensures even distribution of infi ll materials

and lifts the pile. The adjustable setting ensures the effect of a rake, but with the softness of a brush, reducing the risk of damage to the fibres. The bristle sections are replaceable and the Flexicomb is designed for a long working life with minimal maintenance.

Furthermore, it can be used with SISIS Singleplay, Twinplay or Quadraplay mounting frames, which can all be connected to any tractor with 3 point linkage and utility trucks with suitable frames.

ACO stabilisation tile system reduces weed growth

ACO’s lightweight reinforced gravel tile, GravelGrid, is designed for driveway applications, as well as paths and gardens. The robust system is suitable for loads of up to 40 tonnes per square metre, so is ideal for properties with vehicles of varying sizes.

GravelGrid’s incorporated Dupont Typar geo-textile fabric allows for easy

installation and reduces the likelihood of weed growth.

What’s more, the structure of the tile eliminates the risk of potholes and the porous SUDs solution also allows for an unimpeded flow of surface water, decreasing the rate of run-off and leading to significant cost savings where conventional drainage solutions are not necessary.

It comes as recent findings by the Football Association show that just one in three football pitches at grassroots level is currently of adequate quality - a stark statistic the sporting body hopes to address by building over 400 new 3G pitches by 2021.

At the same time, UK average rainfall is increasing, with wetter summers and higher annual rainfalls predicted to increase further in the coming years - placing a greater emphasis on the essential role drainage plays when it comes to the construction of these much-needed synthetic pitches.

Tom Wise, General Manager for Aggregate Industries’ Garside Sands Division, comments: “As more and more sports clubs are investing in their facilities, particularly with the ongoing large-scale construction of 3G pitches to boost grassroots level sport, the importance of correct maintenance has risen to the top of the agenda for many.

Traditionally, 3G surfaces consist of three layers; the top pile of artificial grass blades is

“However, what’s often overlooked is the vital role that infill silica sands play in providing an effective drainage system for the pitch. This in turn is key to ensuring playability in all weather conditions and guaranteeing the legacy of these high-tech surfaces will last the test of time.”

According to Aggregate Industries, essential to a superior drainage system is the use of silica sand infills such as ProPitch Elite, an innovative solution made from larger rounded particles in order to provide superior void space, making it ideal for synthetic sports pitches exposed to extreme weather conditions.

Reducing the risk of flooding, independent tests have proven ProPitch Elite to have the best drainage rates available to the UK market, draining a record 116% better than the most popular competitor sand. This means it is particularly suited to not only 3G surfaces, but also tennis courts, hockey pitches and bowling greens, which require shorter pile carpets where the sands layer is crucial in offering stability to the carpet fibres as well as draining fast enough to guarantee there is no standing water during a game.

School calls in Replay to restore all-weather surface

The Minster School in Southwell may be one of the oldest schools in England, having been founded in 956, but its sports facilities are up to date. To complement its natural rugby and football pitches it has a state-of-theart all-weather pitch. After experiencing problems with it in early 2018 David Everett, Acting School Business Manager called on the expertise of Replay Maintenance.

David oversees the maintenance of the playing surfaces and has a team of 3 site staff and a grounds person working hard to maintain the natural surfaces. “We had a problem with the all-weather surface as the sand had become very dirty and compacted due to the use over a number of years and this had a major impact on drainage.

“We therefore approached various companies with a view to undertaking a rejuvenation and Replay Maintenance

provided the most comprehensive quotation” explained David. We were impressed by the process and we’ve now entered into a quarterly maintenance contract with them for the next five years.“

The Replay Rejuvenation process can restore compacted and contaminated synthetic football, rugby, hockey and tennis surfaces to ‘as new’ performance and appearance.

The first stage of the process is to extract the contaminated infill from the surface. Replays’ Beaver machines feature unique constant air-flow plenum technology and uses compressed air to remove the contaminated layer of infill and fully decompact the surface. It can extract the infill to any chosen depth, including to the carpet backing if necessary. The pile fibres are cleaned, untangled and restored to vertical.

The operator will then assess the general condition of the carpet,

repairing any weak or damaged seams. A purpose-built spreading machine then distributes the fresh infill to the correct depth. An integral centrally-mounted oscillating brush then works this infill down into the surface, completing the rejuvenation.

The process can fully restore a synthetic surface’s porosity, ball bounce and roll and player comfort. Unlike replacing a surface, the Replay Rejuvenation procedure can be completed in days, minimising downtime and the important revenue stream that a synthetic pitch can bring. It also

goes without saying that it also comes at a fraction of the cost of a full replacement.

David again: “The all-weather surface is used during the school day and also most evenings by external groups including different Football and Hockey Clubs. With such a busy schedule it’s important that the maintenance regime keeps downtime to a minimum. The planned maintenance programme with Replay will ensure this.”

Slatter offers the perfect solutions

Concerned about the condition of your artificial sports pitch?

Is it creating issues due to: inconsistent ball bounce; playing too fast or slow; too firm underfoot; poor drainage; or seam failures?

Even the best artificial turf systems need to be regularly maintained to retain their optimum condition and performance. Maintenance should follow a planned

Frilford Heath’s Yellow Course proves invaluable in extreme temperatures

Frilford Heath Golf Club’s Yellow Course, is going from strength to strength in the year since it was opened by European Tour Professional Eddie Pepperell in August 2017.

The Par 3 Yellow Course sits alongside Frilford Heath’s three existing championship courses but uniquely, it was created using Huxley Golf allweather surfaces.

The Yellow Course was designed to cater for all standards of golfer: beginners who want a gentle introduction to the game, experienced players who want to improve their short game, and

the rapidly expanding group of golfers that find it hard to find time to play regularly.

Executive Chairman of Frilford Heath Golf Club, Alistair Booth, commented: “When we opened this course, I said how proud I was to have extended our offering by creating such a high quality facility that could be used by young and old, novices and professionals alike. I was hopeful that it would attract the wider community and encourage people who wouldn’t normally play golf to give it a go.

“One year on, I’m delighted that we are achieving these goals.

This summer, the course enabled us to introduce golf to over 30 juniors in the Eddie Pepperell Academy. And, just a few weeks ago, I was delighted to see three generations of one family playing the Yellow Course together. That, for me, demonstrated that our unique all-weather course achieved all it set out to do.”

Head Greenkeeper and former President of BIGGA, Sid Arrowsmith, added: “The course looks amazing. We seeded grass around the all-weather greens for the fairways and approaches: this has now settled in and looks extremely natural. When courses all around are struggling to look

their best during the prolonged heatwave, our Yellow Course still looks perfect – with zero irrigation and just a couple of hours a week in maintenance time required, it frees my team up to look after the rest of our facilities. It also proved invaluable during last winter’s heavy snow. While other courses were shut, we just swept the snow off our all-weather greens and members were able to keep on playing!”

Divided into two accessible loops of three holes each, the Frilford Heath Yellow Course’s six greens all measure 1350 sq. ft (125 sq. mtrs) but all are unique

in shape and undulations. There are 12 Huxley Golf Premier Nylon Tee Mats, two for each hole, creating a variety of approach shots from differing angles and length with increasing difficulty. The light, bright course meanders its way through avenues of trees with bird boxes to encourage wildlife and natural grass fairways and approaches.

programme of specialist care to ensure your pitch plays as it should.

But if you’ve concerns about the condition of your facility, act now - before we’re too far into the winter seasons.

The PGA accredited Huxley Golf provides premier allweather surfaces for golf around the world for individuals, training and coaching establishments, golf resorts, ranges and academies as well as many top-flight courses.

Places for People embrace Pellenc battery power

Places for People, one of the UK’s largest property management companies, has reported a number of significant benefits since investing in a large fl eet of Pellenc battery powered equipment.

For the grounds maintenance side of the business, the landscapes team recently purchased a fleet of Pellenc battery powered equipment which included Airion 2 hand blowers powered by 1100 ultra-lithium batteries.

Gary Slater (North East), Julian Chapman (South) and Paul Hodgson (North West) are the three regional operations managers for Places for People Landscapes and they explained their reasons for choosing the Pelllenc equipment.

“I think there was probably three main driving factors in us choosing the Pellenc equipment,” says Julian. “There were the environmental benefits, the

health and safety benefits, and the reduction in servicing and fuel costs.”

The exclusive Pellenc technology allows for a drastic reduction in the production of greenhouse gases and noise pollution. It is also comfortable for users, meets new sustainable development demands and offers excellent economic profitability. With a record capacity of up to one

day’s use on a single charge, these quality products are a perfect fit for Places for People – according to Gary.

All Pellenc batteries and tools come with a three-year commercial warranty and are distributed in the UK and Ireland exclusively by Etesia UK.

Debris clearance enhanced with the new Imants RotoBlast

Campey Turf Care Systems continue to make clearing debris a breeze with the new Imants RotoBlast. The latest innovation from Imants joins a highly successful portfolio of exclusive products including the Koro FIELD TOPMAKER,

ShockWave, SandCat and RotoKnife. The RotoBlast adds to this impressive line of machines with a 3,750-rpm blower that produces an air velocity of 130m3/ min.

The tractor mounted blower is typically used for clearing greens and tees, fairways, pathways and other sports turf areas, but it is also designed to move leaves, grass clippings, thatch, litter and other unwanted surface debris from any area that requires clear access or to be kept tidy.

As with all Imants machines, the RotoBlast has been designed with the practical user experience

at the forefront. Attached by a 3-point linkage, the powerful blower is mounted on a wheeled chassis to enhance its ability to follow contours on undulating terrain whilst maintaining a constant nozzle height above the ground. There is also an option to invert the wheels and revert to a fully mounted operation. The lightweight machine only weighs 100kg and can be lifted and moved by one person when not mounted on the tractor. It has a capacity of 300m2/min with an operating speed of 0.6 -6.2mph, requiring only 25 -50 hp tractor power.

Golf club re-establishes heather with help from Trilo

Strong and steady Wiedenmann Super 500 prioritises versatility and safety

A mark of a top machine is when R&D engineers prioritise versatility and safety equally, then deliver both in abundance.

Wiedenmann’s Super 500 is such a machine. It’s a sweeper collector with a difference because it also verticuts, flail mows and fraise mows, making it a worthy recipient of the name ‘Super’.

Most users choose the multi head base unit and then select from a range of flail and verticutting blades to suit their purpose.

Infinitely variable high dump at any height up to 2.1 m elevates the Super 500’s status to work with all kinds of trailers. Productivity is maximised as time and fuel are saved with fewer journeys for emptying.

Safety features begin with the Super 500’s floating head which follows contours and allows sweeping without changing implements. The parallelogram guided suspension helps the operator find an optimal working position.

The eco-friendly chute, which guides the dust toward the ground, reduces dust to the operator and the surrounding area.

Further options are the golf course kit which fits to the front roller and replaces two tyres, enabling the multi-function head to follow the contours even more accurately. The super contour kit assists those with deep ridges

and furrows. An additional back roller with additional anti scalp rollers fits inside the rotor drum brings the anti- scalp wheels even closer to the centre of the rotor drum.

Finally, you can opt to have all hydraulic functions operated by electric controls from the tractor seat.

Nestled in the Hertfordshire countryside, Mid Herts Golf Club is one of only a few heathland courses in Hertfordshire.

Having been neglected for a number of years, a project is underway to re-establish the native heather around the 18 holes by Course Manager Jody Wilson.

Assisting Jody in creating the ideal growing conditions, is his team of five greenkeepers, and a fleet of machinery from Trilo.

“I first came across the Trilo product during my time at Woburn Golf Club, where we purchased one of the first machines in the UK” explains Jody, who has now been at Mid Herts for 13 years. “In my opinion they are leading the market for leaf and debris collection so when our previous machine started causing us problems, I turned to Trilo to look at alternatives.” With two Trilo BL740 blowers already in the shed, he added an S4 vacuum sweeper to his collection over the winter of 2017/18.

The club has been working closely with Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust on a plan to open up woodland areas to encourage the regeneration of heather, which has been a big project for Jody. “We have a lot of oak

trees which have encroached on the course over the years which means our leafing season goes on and on. Heather and long grasses don’t like organic matter, so in an effort to create the right conditions, we collect every single leaf that falls - a daily task in the winter. We use our BL740’s to blow the debris off the course where it is then collected up in the S4.” In use from the moment it arrived, the S4 collected over 140 loads (or 560m3!) of leaves over the autumn/winter period.

While mainly used for leaf collection, Jody also has the flail attachment for the S4 meaning they can now cut and collect the long roughs in one pass, which was previously conducted by two separate machines. “Now we can do both jobs simultaneously, we’re saving time and manpower and the interchangeable attachments make it a versatile, year-round machine.”

“Where we’ve been clearing the leaves away, the heather has been naturally reoccurring across the course. It’s been an ongoing project for me for the last 10-11 years, but we’re now making real progress. Both us as greenkeepers, and the players, are delighted.”

Blades can be set to 57 mm, 38 mm or 19 mm spacings. Collected clippings make their way to a 2.5 cubic metre hopper, the airflow path ensuring the container is completely filled and tightly packed whether it be leaves, grass or other debris.

The fully floating head allows for ideal ground adaptation so takes uneven ground in its stride.

Next special flotation tyres with a large contact area and low ground pressure protect the surface together with a pair of anti-scalp rollers.

ShockWave causes welcome disturbance at top school

Tips for slip-proofing your premises

Slip, trips and falls are the most common accident reported in the workplace. The law states that:

Employers must ensure the health and safety of all employees and anyone who may be affected by their work under The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. This includes taking steps to control slip and trip risks at work.

your foot traffic occurs?

Charterhouse

The Surrey-based institute offers a varied sports programme that changes with the school terms and includes football, rugby, tennis, golf, cricket and athletics.

Having to manage a site that offers all of these sports all-year round means having machines that are capable of working on different surface specifications and at different times of the yeare, particularly during the busy winter months.

Grounds manager, Lee Marshallsay, explains: “We’re using it on football pitches and rugby pitches, I’ve put it through the golf greens in November last year and it worked really well and didn’t leave any mess or cause any damage.

“It got us through that winter period with heavy rainfall and made a real difference on a couple of greens that were holding water.

“You can resume playing straight away, you wouldn’t know it’s been on there really. We are a heavily used site across our 16 winter sports pitches and being able to work different areas of the site with different machines is massive for us.

“All of our aeration was spiking, so to now have the ability to carry out linear aeration helps us, we are on some nice free-draining soil, but we do have issues with some areas, and to be able to use a different type of machine for aerating that also creates extra drainage channels is ideal for us.

“The few troublesome areas have benefitted most by being able to linear aerate through fracturing the soil a little bit and creating more air pockets down below the surface.

“You don’t want to keep spiking all the time even though you can go to different depths, it’s good to have the option of the shockwave and work the different depths to achieve aeration using an alternative method of decompaction.”

“The Shockwave adds more strings to our bow so we can address any issue as and when it arises and include it for the general maintenance to avoid problems from developing in the first place.”

Revitalising heavily used areas is what the ShockWave is built for. It is designed to relieve soil compaction, improve aeration and remove surface water, all of which Lee has seen on his nine-hole golf course and winter sports pitches.

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 requires employers to assess risks (including slip and trip risks), and take action to address them where necessary.

Finally, the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 require floors to be suitable, in good condition and free from obstructions. People should be able to move around safely.

FibreGrid, the leading producer of anti-slip flooring products, offers a fully comprehensive solution to all potential slip hazards. Here are some of our top tips for slipproofing your work premises.

1. Identify the area of your premises with the heaviest foot traffic. Do you have one main entrance area used by employees and visitors alike? Do you have a walkway where most of

The more foot traffic, the higher chance of a slip or fall, so make sure you pay extra attention to these areas when choosing your anti slip solution. FibreGrid offer branded anti slip floor mats for your premises, so not only will your premises entrance offer an extremely durable anti slip flooring solution, but will also look aesthetically pleasing for your premises. We also offer anti slip GRP line marking panels for those areas in your warehouse that see the most foot traffic.

2. We all know how easy it is to trip up the stairs (or down them), so areas requiring extra attention when slip proofing your property are any staircases or steps across your premises. FibreGrid offer a huge range of anti slip stair solutions including stair tread covers, nosings, anti-slip paints and tapes –all suitable for any budget. Make sure you choose the right solution for the level of traffic your stairs sees.

For rarely used fire escapes, FibreGrid’s SlipGrip Standard Stair Tread Covers are ideal, however if you have entrance stairs that see large amounts of employee

or visitor foot traffic, our aluminium reinforced stair tread covers may suit you better.

3. Our next tip is to hazard spot your premises. Walk around your premises and look around for any hazard that may pose a potential trip threat. Are there any holes, potholes or uneven paths on your premises?

FibreGrid offer concrete repair products which allow you to quickly and easily patch these issues up. Are there any areas prone to getting wet (which may then ice or moss up in the winter months?) Is any of your machinery leaking fluid which may cause a fatal slip? Is any of your current anti slip solution too worn

to be doing its job property

4. Our final tip is to identify areas with limited natural light. If you have a particularly dark section, or if you have areas used by pedestrian during night time hours, then you open yourself up to a higher potential for slips and falls due to limited visibility. Other than ensuring these areas are well lit, you may also want to provide glow in the dark flooring for your foot traffic. FibreGrid offer our Safety Glow range – anti slip GRP flooring which glows in the dark –showing pedestrian exactly where to put their feet to avoid any accidents.

With the onset of winter coming later every year, there’s more time than ever to ‘winterise’ the garden and its outdoor timber.

First task always is cleaning and Roxil Wood & Patio Cleaner from Safeguard Europe provides a non-destructive alternative to potentially harmful power-spray and acidic cleaning methods for exterior surfaces such as

decking, fencing, sheds, patios and paved surfaces.

Once cleaned, patios and outdoor wood can then be protected longterm by treatment with Roxil Patio Cream or Roxil Wood Protection Cream to keep patios looking good and algae-free.

The concept of weedwiping was developed in New Zealand in the 1970’s and it offers a controlled method of targeting weeds.

The Wessex Weedwiper attaches to a standard ball hitch on an ATV, UTV or 4 x 4 and comprises a unique roller carpet mounted on a sturdy mainframe.

There’s a large wheel at each end, one of which drives the roller rotation and the roller runs in the opposite direction to the travel of the Rotowiper to allow thorough coating of the underside of the leaf.

The machine is height adjustable to ensure all weed types and growth stages are catered for. A reliable pump transfers chemical from the

leading engines, safety goggles, bump feed head and grass blade as standard.

Tracmaster also supplies a large range of alternative cutting heads, from clearing saws to the fantastic Nylsaw Speed heads.

Three different models of 4 stroke brushcutter are available, including the Combi HO25 with brushcutter, hedgetrimmer, chain pruner and a 75cm Extension for longer reach.

The ADVANCE Universal Harness supplied features soft padding for further comfort during longer jobs. Additionally, the anti-vibration system dampens oscillations from the machine’s engine to reduce vibrations at the handles, rendering the FS 131 suitable to use over extended periods.

The ride-on brushcutter with

remote control functionality

Mowing on steep and difficult terrain has always been a challenge for the machine operator and the AS 940 and AS 940 XL ride on brushcutter, available from PSD Groundscare, have been especially developed for this demanding application.

With ride-on brushcutters, steep slopes can be mown conveniently and economically. However, there are always areas where mowing is very unpleasant or unsafe for the operator, including steep terrain, loose substrate, mowing under trees

and bushes, along hedges and even areas around wasp nests.

AS Motor have the solutionthe AS 940 Remote Control which offers all the benefits of

the standard AS 940 but with the option to convert to remote control when required.

Developments in brushcutter technology are being shaped by safety and the environment

LAPU talks with Les Malin, Managaing Director of Etesia UK, about the ways in which new product development is being shaped by increased environmental awareness and a determination to improve the health, safety and well-being of industry professionals.

Q: How has the industry’s need to be clean and quiet yet remain efficient and productive influenced manufacturers like Etesia and Pellenc?

A: The battery revolution is assisting this side of the business in terms of being cleaner and more environmentally-friendly. The motors which are able

to be powered by modernday batteries have far larger capacities compared to a few years ago – this means that their range is far longer in terms of running time and the power is now truly comparable to a mid-range petrol equivalent. Whereas before, the majority of battery-powered products available had limited capacity motors so they would put them very much at the lower end of the market. On the combustion engine side of things; we are constantly looking at more environmentally-friendly and fuel efficient engines from manufacturers. New Etesia pedestrian mowers coming on to the market shortly will be more

fuel efficient with the modern engines which also produce less emissions.

Q: New technology is being embraced by both the industry and manufacturers - how successful has the move to remote control machines been?

A: Remote-controlled machines have been successful to a point. However, all users still need to consider that the machine you have purchased or use is capable of carrying out the work required. From a health and safety perspective there are a lot of positives such as being able to carry out maintenance works on steep slopes, without risk of injury to the operator. There are some draw-backs to this as the operator is remote from the machine, so they do not always see where the machine is going or any obstacles in the machines way or the terrain it is travelling over. There is always the possibility of the machine coming into diffi culty, or getting stuck in

a hole which cannot be seen from anywhere else or in the worse-case rolling back down a slope. Remote-controlled machines are not fail-proof. We always recommend a walk-by site survey is carried out prior to any maintenance works to ensure no obstacles will become a problem.

Q: Operator comfort and safety is more important than ever - how does Etesia’s machines and Pellenc equipment benefit users in this respect?

A: From an operator comfort perspective, Etesia designs all of our machines with the operator in mind. First of all, we ensure that it is the best grass-cutting machine that you can buy. Secondly, operator comfort and safety. Hence why none of our ride-on machines look like the traditional ride-on mowers. The design is such that the operator is sitting central on the machine and is in the best possible place to have the most comfortable ride possible with all of the controls strategically placed and easy to reach. The new Pellenc harness, which has also recently won three innovation and sustainability awards, has been designed to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal disorders considerably by a better distribution of the weight that leaves the user free of their movements. The ergonomics and lightness of the new Pellenc harness offer an optimal level of comfort in use. Its weight is perfectly distributed on the essential axes of back support as 70% of the mass rests on the hips and only 30% on the shoulders. The intuitive adjustment of the entire carrying system, from the straps to the backbone, adapts to any working habits of the user.

Q: Battery power is now being incorporated into ride-on

machinery as well, will there still be a market for more traditional engines too?

A: For the foreseeable future there will always be a market for the traditional combustion petrol and diesel engine machines. These are not going to disappear over-night. The battery technology is still in its infancy in many regards in terms of the battery capacity and how long it can run for, although there are improvements year on year. As the years pass, the change-over will more than likely increase as people search for greener alternatives. Every year new developments take place and new machines come on to the market with bigger capacity batteries and newer technology. The initial purchase cost remains high, which will put some people off converting, but as the technology improves, then the costs should reduce. When purchasing machinery it is also important to put together a full life-time cost. This includes purchase price, maintenance costs and value after two or three years.

Q: What are the next stages of development for remote control and battery power technology?

A: Both Etesia and Pellenc will be launching new products over the coming months as this technology is constantly evolving. Battery-powered

We are always looking to the next product that will be coming out which will last longer in terms of battery run time and be operator friendly. If you look at this area, around eight years ago when we were the first manufacturer to embrace battery technology for the professional market, things have come along way. Within the last eighteen months alone, we have launched two new high capacity waterproof batteries which are able to run our largest motors (on the Pellenc Rasion mower) for up to six hours of cutting time, which shows you just how quickly things move. There are a lot more product enhancements to come.

Fantastic fairways from the SISIS Flexibrush

Lawrence Ryan, course manager at Overstone Park Resort, believes that the SISIS tractor mounted Flexibrush delivers fantastic results on the picturesque fairways at the Northampton based golf course.

With a vast selection of turf care equipment in his armoury, Lawrence is particularly impressed with his SISIS Flexibrush – a tractor mounted brush which is ideal for both synthetic and natural turf surfaces.

In Lawrence’s case, he has reported great results from using it for a number of tasks on his fairways. Featuring a 5.35 metre working width, its brush sections ‘float’ to follow ground contours providing maximum efficiency on large areas.

The SISIS Flexibrush, which is also commonly used for effectively dispersing top dressings, has hydraulically folding outer sections for storage and movement between areas

and Lawrence claims that this feature provides him with even more versatility.

Bobcat ups advantages with new innovation center investments

Doosan Bobcat has announced a swath of investments in new technology, machinery and processes at the company’s Innovation Center in Dobris in the Czech Republic.

The Innovation Center is the R&D hub of an integrated site at Dobris that also includes manufacturing, sourcing and training at the same location.

Doosan Bobcat believes the ability to design, test and manufacture Bobcat machines locally is one of the company’s competitive advantages in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region. The new investments are intended to boost these advantages and involve every part of the operations in the Innovation Center, from

rapid prototyping and prototype assembly to performance and durability testing.

The Innovation Center is a European Engineering Center of Excellence, serving as an expert R&D centre for all Doosan Bobcat engineering teams across EMEA and has global responsibility for small compact loaders and compact excavators from 0-3 tonne.

It focuses on creating new innovative solutions, product development, research and testing activities. The facility, with more than 8000 m2 of floor space for prototyping and testing and 1400 m2 of office area, is a place where new advanced - and in some cases – unique technologies are installed.

With recent advances in computer designing and modelling, many manufacturers omit (or at least limit) the creation and testing of physical prototypes. In contrast, at Doosan Bobcat, the company knows their importance and has invested heavily in its production technologies.

Rigby Taylor to supply Framlingham College

to improve and maintain the standards of the college’s rugby, football and cricket pitches, as well as tennis courts.

Makita teams up with BALI again

Makita UK will be returning to the BALI Zone at Saltex this year which takes place at the NEC in Birmingham, 31 October – 1 November 2018.

And it is a strategy that he is now successfully applying at Framlingham College in Suffolk.

His expert outlook explains why he has signed a threeyear preferred supplier deal with Rigby Taylor for all the amenity supplies, including linemarking machines and paints and aerosols, that he and his team of eight groundsmen will need

The agreement – which he affirms “will bring the sports fields and horticultural areas up to scratch and consistently playable and well-presented” at the college’s two sites (the main college campus and the nearby junior school) is, he says, a winwin situation.

Clive’s shopping list includes the R9 and R5 seeds (100% ultra-fine rye and 100% fescue blend, respectively), Crossbar selective herbicide and Chikara contact/residual herbicide, as well as Gallup Biograde Amenity foliar-applied herbicide and the Qualgex surface biocide, plus two iGo Advance and an iGo Mini Exclusive line-markers and Impact line-marking paint along with a variety of loams and dressings.

Makita will be on stand K190d, Hall 6. The BALI Zone features and promotes leading BALI registered affiliate and contractor members. Also confirmed for this year are Boningale Nurseries, Green-tech, British Sugar TOPSOIL, EverEdge and YMCA Training.

The Makita UK stand will showcase the ever-growing garden machinery range suitable for professional landscaping contractors, groundsmen and forestry workers.

“We are really looking forward to returning to the BALI Zone at this year’s Saltex and to be teaming up with other leading names in the landscaping industry,” says Mark Earles, Business Development Manager, Makita UK. “There will be a focus on our expanding cordless range but visitors will be able to learn about the entire

collection including our petrol and electric models.”

The 18V battery platform makes it economically viable for the tool owner as there is the option to purchase the ‘body only’ version for those who already own batteries for their other Makita power tools.

This battery platform has set an industry benchmark but still continues to expand with

innovations such as the twin-18V technology which can power a 36V motor.

Using battery powered grounds care machines means that exhaust emissions are zero –petrol engine exhaust fumes are eliminated and the risk of ground contamination from spilt petrol and oil is removed altogether.

Many Makita grounds-care machines offer a considerable

reduction in vibration and can be used all day without harm to the operator. Makita’s battery powered tools are significantly quieter than petrol machines whilst still delivering a professional performance. This quiet approach means teams can work around parks, schools, hospitals and cemeteries without causing nuisance and annoyance.
