SALTEX is still growing

Show organisers have listened to visitor feedback from last year’s event to ensure that SALTEX 2016, taking place on 2 and 3 November at the NEC Birmingham, will offer even more reasons to attend.

Last year’s SALTEX (Sports, Amenities, Landscaping Trade Exhibition) was an unprecedented success with over 260 exhibitors and 8,714 unique visitors spanning 45 different nations.

Building on that success, SALTEX 2016’s improved show features and unrivalled industry

support are set to work together to create the most exciting groundscare event to date when the doors to halls 6, 7 and 8 open at the NEC, Birmingham.

Over 280 exhibitors from a diverse range of grounds management sectors have confirmed. The exhibition will see a plethora of exhibitors representing the likes of forestry, play, groundscare machinery, artificial surfaces, natural turf, landscaping products, pest control, line marking, waste management, sports equipment and many, many more.

Show organisers have commissioned an extra seminar theatre for SALTEX 2016 in order to expand the number of presentations across the two days. Learning LIVE will now see four purpose-built seminar

is increasing but the funding they receive is reducing. Over half the UK population regularly use their local park, yet the challenge of managing our parks and green spaces is increasing due to the continued reduction in funding and loss of staff and skills. We have to find a solution now before the improvements made over the past 20 years are lost and our parks, once again, go into decline and become places that require significant investment.

There is a need to improve and monitor improvement in parks, which is why the Parks Alliance would like to see a national measure of quality using the Green Flag Award standardwith an annual update. Local authorities should then adopt and monitor this national measure.

Parks are an integral part of childhood. In an average month, almost half (48%) of all children in England visit local urban

parks. Mark Camley, Chairman of The Parks Alliance, said: “HLF’s findings that the recent renaissance in parks over last 20 years is now coming to an end is of great concern and should be a wakeup call for us.

“Local authorities, voluntary groups and contractors have done an excellent job of offsetting significant budget reductions by working inventively and collaboratively to find new solutions and is disguising the depth of the crisis.

“The sector is at a tipping point, with a high percentage of parks managers having left the sector leading to a degradation of the skills base. Of those remaining, some 95% expect cuts to their budget over the next 3 years. This is unsustainable. We all know Parks have a beneficial effect on our lives, so we need to act on this now. A make do and mend approach will not

work. The government and local authorities need to recognise the benefits of parks and green spaces, including on health, and fund them appropriately.”

Phil Jones, Chairman of BALINCF, said it was of great concern that, whilst the use of parks is increasing, the report shows a continuing decline in the state of the infrastructure.

“There is an urgent need for more collaboration at local level to further engage all stakeholders, both public and private,” he added.

“Coupled with the move to increase awareness at national level of the importance of saving our parks in the UK and the resultant benefits our green spaces provide, this collaboration will generate further credible evidence to support the cause.

New CEO for the Landscape Institute

Landscape Institute President Merrick Denton-Thompson has announced the appointment of Daniel Cook as its new Chief Executive Officer.

The move will provide fresh leadership and drive forward its aim to broaden membership, particularly internationally. Daniel will move from his role as Director of Strategy and Planning at RICS to the Landscape Institute during October. Mr Denton-Thompson

said: “Daniel joins at an exciting time for the LI as it modernises its governance and approach to develop a broader membership of landscape professionals.

“He will also seek to improve engagement with the next generation and progress the LI’s focus on education to ensure that our profession continues to provide skilled practitioners to meet industry and society’s needs.”

It has been a bit of a rollercoaster few months for the industry.

For the sports groundcare market there has been plenty to cheer with a successful summer of sport once again negotiated and a little reflective glory to bask in after a triumphant Olympics and Paralympics in Rio. We’ve also seen a busy and vibrant show and exhibition season around the country with good crowds, brisk business and plenty of product innovation on display. It is timely, therefore, that we have our main preview of SALTEX 2016 in this issue. The event at NEC Birmingham in November promises to be bigger and better than before and certainly the large number of exhibitors and full seminar programme offer plenty for visitors to enjoy. The big question, as ever, is whether the industry as a whole supports the event and vote with their feet by boosting visitor numbers. All this positive news is tempered somewhat with

the latest HLF report on the state of our parks and the future prospects for our green spaces. It makes sobering reading. But just as we need the whole industry to pull together and support SALTEX 2016, so we need it to combine and fight for a secure future for our parks and green spaces.

Search to find UK’s best park launched by Fields in Trust

National charity Fields in Trust have launched a campaign to find the UK’s Best Park, as voted by the public.

This unique award is open to all public green spaces across the UK through a simple

online nomination at www. fieldsintrust.org/bestpark. At a time when the UK’s parks are seeing a dramatic reduction in funding for upkeep and maintenance and childhood obesity is identified as a growing concern, the UK’s Best Park

award will highlight the vital role of local parks and green spaces – for play, relaxation or sport – and help ensure they are protected from closure or building development.

UK’s Best Park is a unique award open to all local green spaces across the UK. A simple online nomination form will allow anyone to suggest their favourite green space. This will be followed by a public vote to identify a shortlist with the winner announced at the Fields in Trust Awards evening on November 30.

Fields in Trust Chief Executive Helen Griffiths said: “Parks and open spaces are arguably the most universal of all public services.

“They are used by the entire community from pre-school children through to retired adults - our nation’s parks and green spaces are places to

enjoy life experiences, whether that’s reaching a personal sporting milestone, teaching grandchildren to cycle, engaging with nature, having a first kiss or simply walking a much loved dog.

“Our Awards help recognise the role that our parks play in our communities, bringing people together and creating a safe outdoor environment that everyone should be entitled to. We want to celebrate them and invite all park users to vote for their favourite green space.”

The UK’s Best Park award is one of eleven categories that together form the fifth, annual Fields in Trust Awards.

Categories include the Community Champion Award and the Young Community Champion Award.

Hidden in North Shropshire woodland is the pleasantly situated works of Harry West (Prees) Limited where the successful West farm machinery is produced. Way back in 1966, the same year as the England World Cup victory, founder and present Chairman, Harry West, started a fabrication unit to meet the needs of the local agricultural community.

“In its formative years the company specialised in light fabrication and repair work of machinery for farmers in the local community. Through my experience as an agricultural engineer, the company began turning its attention to the development of new products beginning with safety rollover bars for tractors. More than 18,000 were manufactured at our then modest workshops at Prees, near Whitchurch, setting a standard for quality and innovation that remains today.

The company’s first Dual Spreaders and Mixers, introduced in 1979, heralded a new range of purpose-made machinery developed with the busy farmer in mind. The Gold Award winning Dual Spreader and the Silver Award winning Hi-Feeder and Mixer wagons have long been trusted favourites in the field. These have since been joined by the Universal Straw Chopper in 1983 and in more recent years by the revolutionary contra-flow Diet Feeder and large capacity Rear Discharge Spreader.

In 2000 we introduced SEKO the Italian made products into our product line taking the company into the area of composting and recycling In an industry that demands only the best, West farm machinery and equipment has earned a reputation of which we can be justifiably proud. We sincerely hope that in choosing Harry West equipment you too will share in our success.”

Wicksteed Space Shuttle touches down in Victoria Park

It was a series of early Wicksteed equipment installed in Victoria Park, Laindon in the 1970s that intrigued local artist Shaun Badham and eventually led to Basildon Council commissioning Wicksteed to create a new piece of play equipment based on those original 70s designs, then collectively entitled ‘Space Race’.

The dazzling space age Shuttle - depicted as part of a cleverly

sculpted Rockscape - is great to clamber over and is exclusive to Basildon Council. It looks out of this world!

Shaun’s encounter with the historical Wicksteed equipment has since inspired him to create a project based on these iconic pieces.

Lawn Master gains second ISO certification

Lawn Master, a national lawn care company, has become the first of its kind to receive ISO 14001 certification, the internationally agreed standard for the environmental management of businesses.

The standard demonstrates an organisation’s efforts to identify, manage, monitor,

control and improve their environmental performance.

It comes six years after the company, whose headquarters are in Denbighshire, became the first in its sector to achieve ISO 9001 certification, which focuses on the quality management of businesses.

The waterlogging solution that digs deeper

Landscapers, groundsmen and gardeners responsible for large grassed open space areas such as parkland, sports pitches, golf courses, bowling greens and avenues of trees, right through to domestic gardens, all share a common problem.

Compaction of the soil and panning lead to waterlogging which renders areas unusable, in many cases for long periods of time.

The usual focus will be on aeration to relieve compaction and open up the soil to allow air to get to the roots and improve drainage.

Deep penetration aeration has proved successful for many years and is well known by golf courses for relieving compaction panning on their greens, tees and even around tree roots.

What is unique is the ability to hydraulically hammer a probe one metre into the soil and release a blast of compressed air at a pressure of up to 20Bar (280psi) which fractures the compacted soil.

At a depth of one metre the probe has effectively passed though pans created by other aeration machines, opening up the soil and creating fissures. On the tail end of the air blast dried milled seaweed, a natural eco-friendly product, is injected via the probe and this sticks to the walls of the fractures and fissures, swelling and contracting with the moisture content in the soil.

Campey helps club build for the future

Campey Turf Care Systems has provided invaluable support to Langley Cricket Club as their pitch has gone from not fit for purpose to one of the best in the area, following outfield drainage and development work on the square.

After consulting managing director of Campey Turf Care; Richard Campey, they purchased a SISIS Comibrake, Turfman, Trio Rotorake, Dragbrush, Sarel Spiker, and Raycam Dragmat.

A main focus of carrying out the improvements was to build the youth set-up, and have the ability to carry out regular sessions to allow that to happen. Before the second phase of work has even begun, Langley have seen a financial benefit through being able to host more games, and an infrastructure benefit through their youth cricket system.

In fact, the technique was introduced with the invention of the Terralift machine in Germany in the early 1970’s. Terralift is now owned and operated in the UK by Terrain Aeration.

Typical applications for deep penetration aeration have broadened from the original golf course treatment into football and rugby playing fields, bowling greens, cemeteries, National Trust properties, estates and private gardens.

Sudstech helps create Gate Way to Manchester

Manchester’s Oxford road is undergoing a large-scale redevelopment throughout 2016.

The proposals include over 4k of major bus priority lanes and Greater Manchester’s first ever ‘Dutch-style’ cycle lanes which will see people on two wheels segregated from the traffic.

The scheme has been revamped following a major public consultation with nearly 900 residents.

Sudstech have already provided approximately 1500m 2 of sustainable porous paving in pedestrian areas to aid congestion along the road from the 70’000 plus students that make the area their home every year.

Due to the heavy amount of foot traffic Manchester city council specified that the material needed to be extremely hard wearing, non-slip and completely SUDS compliment. Due to the versatile nature of the Sudstech product Manchester city council have also specified that the product be used for hundreds of innovative new tree pits included in the scheme.

Replay keeps school surfaces in good order

Leicester Grammar School has botha sand-based and water-based hockey surface which need slightly different maintenance regimes.

Alongside general blowing and spraying work they conduct weekly in-house brushing of the sand filled surface, and dragmatting on the water-based pitch. When it was time to take the maintenance to the next level they turned to Replay Maintenance.

The school has close relationships with Leicester Tigers, Leicester Ladies’ Hockey and Leicester Mens’ Hockey

teams, with current and past pupils representing these clubs at all levels.

The two all-weather hockey surfaces at the school are kept in optimum condition by head groundsman Ed Ramsden and his team of three groundstaff and Replay Maintenance.

Understanding that maintaining the artificial pitches was key to protecting the schools investment, Ed attended an IOG Artificial Surfaces event where he met Nick Harris of Replay Maintenance. With the sand-filled pitch starting to show some early signs of its

age they asked Replay, along with some of the other companies they met at the IOG day, to come and assess the pitches. Replay Revive uses a specially developed machine to remove contaminants from filled and water-based carpets. It de-compacts and rotates the infill whilst a series of filters and vacuums remove dust, debris and broken down fibres.

A deeper clean is performed by Rejuvenation - compressed air is delivered into the carpet, de-compacting the surface and driving out the contaminated infill. The pile fibres are cleaned, untangled and restored to vertical before a brush works the new clean infill returning the surface to an ‘as new’ performance and appearance. It can double the playing life of a pitch for a fraction of the cost of a new carpet.

Get ready for winter with no cords

The EGO LB5300E blower shifts fallen leaves and other debris in seconds, preventing rot and keeping gardens looking tidy.

Weighing just 2.1kg, the lightweight blower has a compact design that provides a longer runtime, with low vibrations and variable speed controls, including a turbo boost mode that is more powerful than many petrol-powered blowers. This efficiency and power is further enhanced by the turbo fan engineering, which has been inspired by aeronautics technology. It has a runtime of up to 150 minutes with a 5.0Ah battery.

EGO’s batteries are interchangeable across the range so only one needs to be purchased to get gardens tidied with both a blower and chainsaw. The CS1600E chainsaw has a 40cm length and a 13.5m/s chain speed, offering maximum levels of efficiency, safety, convenience and comfort.

The EGO Power+ chainsaw, will make up to 300 cuts of four inch by four inch softwood per charge of a 5.0Ah 56 volt EGO battery. The highly efficient brushless motor system gives a smooth cut and its weight

balance means the chainsaw is light and easy to manoeuvre. It features an automatic shutdown for when it’s not in use, as well as an automatic lubrication system and innovative tool-free chain tensioning.

There is an easy to see oil level indicator on the tank and the D-shaped handle ensures easy manoeuvrability and maximum operator comfort and safety. Alongside its quiet operating, the chainsaw’s low vibration reduces stress on limbs, cutting down on

irritating muscle ache. The EGO Power+ system is a breakthrough in every way, and has been designed to deliver a new level of cordless performance. In just forty minutes the 4.0Ah battery can be fully recharged using the rapid charger, which is another first in the lawn and garden world. The entire EGO Power + range matches the performance of petrol products without the noise, fuss or fumes.

New biological pest control range launched

Sherriff Amenity has launched a unique range of new biological pest control products.

It is that time of year again when we might just find some unwanted visitors dwelling in our soil, feeding on plant roots and damaging the turf.

The problem however does not just rest there – if we fail to remove them, then the likes of birds, badgers and foxes make matters worse by tearing up the turf in order to feed on them. Unfortunately, the emergence of Leatherjackets and Chafer Grubs

are all too common at this time of year, so those experiencing this problem will be pleased to see the launch of Sherriff Amenity’s three new biological pest control products: Sportnem-H – for the control of Chafer Grubs & Bibionid Fly; Sportnem T – for the control of Leatherjackets; and Nemaflo – for maximum results.

Good timing and application are crucial and best results are achieved when treatment starts at first signs of larvae, rather than retrospectively.

Kubota UK to hold second annual skills contest

Kubota UK will be holding its second annual skills competition in October 2016, a two-day event that seeks to put the technical competence of its staff and technicians working at dealerships across the manufactures extensive network to the test. In a different format to last year’s event, this year will

see the competition expanded to include not only Kubota UK staff, but also service engineers who conduct maintenance on Kubota machinery at dealerships throughout the country.

Each contestant will be required to conduct a 100 question written assessment followed by

an intense 90-minute practical challenge, with competitors tasked with diagnosing and fixing five faults on the Kubota L5740HST-II tractor. Each will be judged on their ability to remedy all five faults, as well as being able to demonstrate the method behind their decision making process. The Kubota

The works of famous minimalist artists of the mid-twentieth century would not be out of place at the launch of Wrekin’s new Highway range.

The home of intelligent products for civil engineering, Wrekin, is inviting visitors to view manhole covers and gully grates as not purely functional necessities of the road but as a way to enhance the urban environment through a unique combination of highperforming functionality, style and elegance.

This is not a new idea. Carl Andre’s Equivalent V111, famously known as ‘The Bricks’, caused huge public debate when it was exhibited at the Tate in 1976. Today, Japanese street artists create drain art and keen

‘gridders’, such as Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, take photographs of striking examples of highway ironwork and post them online. There is a small but serious group of followers determined to make manholes and gully grates seen as art.

Now, Wrekin is launching its new Highway range at the Wrekin Pavilion ‘Seeing is Believing’ exhibition, which will challenge traditional views of manhole covers and gully grates. Specifiers, contractors, local authorities and ironwork installers are all welcome to come and see all the benefits of Highway, which offers a single range to meet every requirement in highway ironwork, including manhole covers, gully grates and ancillaries.

Sales Director Simon Turner explains: “A huge amount of engineering precision and design expertise goes into our products. Once they’re in the ground, many of the benefits are unseen, so we’re shining a spotlight on the ingenious features that make Highway products so useful.

“Our experts will be on hand to give visitors a truly comprehensive overview of how Wrekin can help local authorities, contractors and other highway industry professionals to meet the challenges of reliable performance and effective maintenance.

“All Highway products are super-easy to stock, specify, install and maintain. They exceed compliance with relevant standards, including BS EN

John Deere supports Women’s British Open

In a ‘normal’ year John Clarke, courses manager at Woburn Golf Club in Buckinghamshire, has a greenkeeping staff of 40, of which 12 work on the Marquess golf course.

When the club hosts a professional tournament, as it did this year with the 40th Ricoh Women’s British Open, the greenkeeping staff numbers rise to 80 for the tournament course alone.

The pressure to maintain the high standard of the playing surfaces also saw a substantial increase in the number of John Deere mowers used on the course. Additional machines were provided by John Deere and dealer P Tuckwell Ltd, Maulden, whose support at the event also included the provision of tractors and other equipment.

G&D wows customers thanks to GftK’s 850+ jointing

Another stunning looking project completed and opened successfully in time by using GftK’s vdw 850+ from NCCStreetscape Ltd.

The advanced Paving Joint Mortar was specified for the unique George & Dragon Pub in Dartmouth, because the architect and main contractor both understood that this was effectively the last operation outside after all of the engineering and drainage works. Despite almost continuous rain and gale force winds for nearly

three weeks, the black limestone and granite sett paving was able to be laid and successfully jointed using GftK’s vdw 850+ in good time for the scheduled VIP reception and opening night .

Paul McGeary of main contractor, Building & Design Services Ltd, said: “With any other paving grout system this would have been impossible and a disaster for everybody because of the terrible weather.”

Classen chosen for renovation at Wentworth Club

Wentworth Club, founded in 1926 and best known for its association with professional golf, is headquarters to the PGA European Tour and each year hosts the BMW PGA Championship.

The club has three eighteen-hole courses and a nine-hole par-3 executive course. Following consultation with golf construction specialists MJ Abbott Limited, renovation work has commenced at Wentworth, removing the turf and reseeding eighteen of the greens and the putting green.

Adrian Abbott, Technical/ Sales Director, specified six new Classen sod cutters for the removal of the turf on the greens at Wentworth in preparation for the reseeding.

The new and simplified Classen machines feature short length and an integrated rear swivel wheel,

making them more compact and manoeuvrable, easier to turn and ideal for creating curves. Classen claim the fastest transport speed in the industry, with the hydrostatic drive pushing the sod cutter along at 4.7mph whilst delivering a finer cut. The blade on the Classen sod cutter is placed at the centre of the machine to ensure a more consistent cutting depth, with twenty cutting strokes per second yielding cleaner, smoother cuts.

Built for longevity, the Classen machines have also been the subject of extensive development of the vibration dampening system for greater operator comfort and a marked increase in productivity. Power comes from Honda engines and the sod cutters come with a two-year Classen warranty.

Porcelain tiles for top quality patio

Another great job by Arbour Design and Build, led by Richard Bickler and using GftK’s vdw 815 Paving Joint Mortar.

The mortar is ideal for grouting these top quality Emperor Limerick Porcelain slabs of larger format paving (larger format generally means the paving units are larger than 400 x 400mm).

In addition to its ease of application and high performance and durability in service, this advanced material is specifically designed for narrower joints (down to 3mm).

As with all of the range using GftK’s Epoxy Bound technology, ease of application also allows grouting and finishing the work in bad weather, even in the pouring rain - you actually

can’t use too much water in the grouting operation, so the fickle British weather does not stop you finishing the job, plus it is the most durable and jet washing resistant paving grout there is.

Stewart Garden adds Lead Effect Round

The

Stewart Garden has strengthened its successful Lead Effect range with the addition of a new size option.

Joining the collection is the Stewart Garden Lead Effect 32cm Round.

With real lead planters heavy, expensive and rare, Stewart Garden has enjoyed great success with its Lead Effect range, first launched in 2014. And the company has continued to expand the range over the last two seasons in line with growing demand.

Plantscape mounts biggest planter operation

Floral features supplier Plantscape is planning the biggest and most complex collection operation in its history as it prepares to bring in thousands of flower-laden planters from across the country.

The company, which is based in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, has had to extend its planter retrieval period to six weeks to enable it to collect more than 12,000 hanging baskets, barrier baskets and floorstanding multi-tier planters.

It will employ three extra temporary workers in order to form three teams of collectors, who will work 10 hours a day from Monday to Friday travelling to locations as far afield as Bangor in Wales, Haverhill in Suffolk,

Middlesbrough, Blackburn, Southport and Worcester.

The planters, full of compost and still overflowing with flowers, will be picked up and placed on the back of a fleet of trucks and transported back to the company’s headquarters in Ashbourne, Derbyshire.

The company watered and maintained many of the displays itself during the season but has now stopped watering many of the planters ahead of recovering them so that the water in the reservoirs is used up and the compost dries out, in order to save weight.

Year 1 class benefits from outdoor teaching space

A busy school in Worcestershire has an active timetable, so when poor weather hampered playtime for its Year 1 children they started to look for a solution.

St Matthias Church of England Primary School turned to A&S Landscape, a canopy supplier, to remedy the problem of useable outdoor space. A&S Landscape specified their Motiva Linear monopitch straight roof canopy for this application. The canopy covers the existing play area and the bright red colour really lifts the building. The year 1 class caters for 30 children aged 5 who love it

and use it daily for teaching as well as for its hugely popular Gardening Club and Playtime Pals sessions.

The canopy was manufactured in red RAL 3020 with the addition of Yellow post pads to ensure it was safe for the children.

The Motiva Linear canopy is A&S Landscape’s monopitch straight roof variant - this is where one side is higher than the other. It can be used for many applications including walkways, waiting and seating areas.

Show Preview

Industry’s biggest event continues to grow in 2016

Last year’s SALTEX (Sports, Amenities, Landscaping Trade Exhibition) was an unprecedented success with over 260 exhibitors and 8,714 unique visitors spanning 45 different nations.

Building on that success, SALTEX 2016’s improved show features and unrivalled industry support are set to work together to create the most exciting groundscare event to date when the doors to halls 6, 7 and 8 open at the NEC, Birmingham on November 2 and 3.

Learning LIVE will now see four purpose-built seminar theatres with state-of-the-art sound systems and screens featuring a greater depth of content and quality.

There will be a number of expert speakers from the UK and abroad focusing on issues that surround the industry and visitors can expect to hear from the likes of Alan Ferguson (St George’s Park); Darren Baldwin (Tottenham Hotspur FC); Dougie Robertson (West Ham United FC); David Roberts (Liverpool FC); Jonathan Calderwood (Paris Saint-Germain FC); Tony Stones (Stade de France); Reece Watson (Arsenal FC); Weston Appelfeller (Major League Soccer team Columbus Crew); Jim Dawson (BT Murrayfield); Keith Kent (Twickenham); Neil Stubley (AELTC – Wimbledon); Steve Chappell (PGA Centenary

Golf Course at the Gleneagles Hotel) and many, many more.

It has also been confirmed that journalist and talkSPORT radio presenter will be reprising his role as host for Seminar Theatre Two.

Based on SALTEX 2015 postshow feedback surveys, show organisers have made the decision to bring back outdoor working demonstrations, which will take place on a grass area directly outside the SALTEX halls 6, 7 and 8 and will provide visitors with an opportunity of seeing a number of products in action.

The SALTEX College Cup, sponsored by Ransomes, is a

brand new national student-led sports-turf challenge that will take place on the first fay of SALTEX. It is an academic test of turf management knowledge for student competitors in teams of four who are enrolled at colleges throughout the UK on relevant courses of study.

The 2.5-hour competition consists of paper-based multiple choice and short answer questions on turf management plus a case study with a long written answer. The winning college team will not only get their hands on the trophy but will receive a generous cheque from the competition sponsor – Ransomes, a cash prize and the chance to be volunteer groundsmen for the 2017 FA Cup final pitch preparation at Wembley Stadium.

The Pathology & Soil Science LIVE area will be located on the IOG Hub (stand number C180) from 11am to 1pm each day and will allow visitors to look in detail at the symptoms of some common turfgrass fungal disease problems, as infected plants are magnified and displayed on a large screen.

Turfgrass roots that are infected with plant parasitic nematodes will also be shown in order to demonstrate the way in which these parasites can affect root development and function. During this informal demonstration, short video clips will also be shown to allow

visitors to see both fungi and plant parasitic nematodes in greater detail.

Pathology & Soil Science LIVE

This year will see the Young Groundsmen’s Conference, sponsored by Rigby Taylor/ Top Green and organised by the (Institute of Groundsmanship’s (IOG) Young Board of Directors, integrated into the Learning LIVE programme on the show floor. The conference will be an ideal opportunity for young people

SALTEX 2015 attendees from across the UK and abroad said that the venue, and convenient dates were key reasons behind their decisions to attend the FREE event. Located in the centre of the UK, whether you are travelling from overseas or within the UK, the NEC is easy to get to by car, rail or air.

The NEC is situated eight miles east of Birmingham city centre; its central location ensures it is at the hub of the UK motorway network. Visitors from any direction can travel to The NEC site directly using the following motorways - M1, M5, M6, M6 Toll, M40 and M42.

looking to advance their career in the groundscare industry, and will offer information on educational opportunities, a guide to what some of the top grounds managers are looking for in a young recruit, and the chance to hear from industry professionals working at some of the most elite venues in the world.

Feedback from SALTEX 2015 post-show surveys revealed that the exhibition’s Ask the Expert feature was hugely popular enabling many visitors to overcome a variety of obstacles they had been experiencing. This year, Ask the Expert is back in style with nine IOG regional pitch advisors based on the IOG Hub throughout the event to offer valuable and free pitch care advice.

Free parking is available for IOG individual members – simply visit the IOG Hub (stand number C180) to collect a voucher.

Ransomes will also be showcasing other municipal mowers plus Cushman utility vehicles, Iseki tractors and turf maintenance equipment from the Turfco and Ryan brands.

Biggest line-up ever from Reesink Turfcare

Reesink Turfcare is bringing its most comprehensive and biggest ever line-up to SALTEX 2016.

Latest products, firm favourites and brand new launches, underwraps for now, from Toro turfcare machinery, Toro irrigation controllers and sprinklers, Otterbine pond and lake aeration

systems and TYM compact tractors will all be on display.

The line-up from the Toro groundscare range includes the highly productive, heavyduty Toro LT-F3000 triple, which launched at the show last year, the Groundsmaster 360 zero-turn mower with Quad-

Steer all-wheel-drive steering, Groundsmaster 7210 rotary mower with the industry’s toughest spindle assembly and the Groundsmaster 4000 with SmartPower which adjusts engine speed to the cutting conditions to maintain optimal power to the blades.

From Toro’s irrigation range, the intuitive technology of the Lynx control system and Smart Access of Infinity sprinklers will be on show to demonstrate how two products can bring maximum performance with minimal effort. Also on show, the Flex 55, TS90 and T7 sprinklers.

Whether it’s aerating systems and fountains to accessories that enhance water features, Otterbine provides a versatile, cost-effective way to prevent or treat poor water quality through efficient circulation, helping maintain optimum oxygen levels to keep water clean and healthy.

New to the range and on show is the Air Flo 3, the third generation of the brand’s diffused aeration system range, which cleans water without affecting the surface – perfect for recreational ponds or lakes.

Joining that is the Fractional fivein-one aerating system, which has the highest performance rate of any fractional aerator on the market and is Otterbine’s bestselling aerator for maintaining water quality at healthy levels in small and medium ponds.

Completing the line-up is the small but mighty TYM TS25 subcompact tractor. A firm favourite with groundscare customers for their lighter maintenance and moving jobs, thanks to a long list of features including quick release front-end loader and backhoe, foldable ROPS, and hydro transmission option.

Wet Pour:

Our Wet pour surface Safti-Top is a permeable surface perfect for every aspect of children’s play, installing graphics or using vibrant colours collaborated with the highest standard of certification means children have excellent entertaining areas to run and play whilst staying safe in the event of bumps and falls.

Christchurch Quomps Splash and Play Park

Before the summer of 2016 Star Rubber Environmental Ltd took on the over haul of resurfacing both the main play park and the splash park on Christchurch quomps. Covering over 1200m2 and under tight time scales the team were hard pushed to design and carry out the resurfacing work.

‘Stretch Your Imagination, Let Us do the rest’

Originally the councillors were happy to settle with a surface similar to what they had before, block colours of blues, and greens. However with the large open spaces and idyllic location we were determined to achieve the ultimate ‘WOW FACTOR’ with;

• Raised and soft Sand dunes under the water jets

• Sparkling sand

• Kerbed and filled steps

• Flowing blue River surfacing linking play park to splash park

Using the highest quality materials and with a stretch of imagination the children in living and visiting Christchurch have one of the best and safest play spaces in the country.

With sand dunes doubling up as a raised area keeping kids out of the water, like an island, yet keeping them safe as its extra soft should there be any falls.

The Star Kerb was used with the EPDM, meaning the old problem of slippery steps; bumps and burses were no longer an issue.

“Cheers, it looks amazing…REALLY AMAZING”

Matthew Reeks, Christchurch and East Dorset Council

Star Kerb:

Star Kerb has been designed by Star Rubber Ltd to create the perfect edge for laying wet pour onto a hard surface, steering clear of the traditionally risky chase cut and totally irradiating the age old problem of thermal shrinkage. Providing a firm vandal resistant edge as well as a distinct clean finish to the surface, which also stands as a demarcation point for the start of the surface. Star Kerb can be used in collaboration with a new surface or also help repair existing surfaces.

Star Cover:

The Star Cover is a quick and easy solution for the use of surfacing over existing drains and manhole covers removing unsightly iron works and erasing the costly construction fees. This enables the original drain to remain fully accessible for maintenance, whilst punched wholes in the bottom of the drain cover increase drainage and greatly reduce pooling. Available in various sizes and depths the Star Cover is zinc and powered coated with a uniquely designed lifting system, which acts as an anti tamper and anti finger trap whilst a double rolled edge gives you a very soft feel under foot.

Pitchmark launches three year warranties

In an industry first, Pitchmark, leading worldwide suppliers of line marking paint, machines and equipment, has announced it is to offer a 3 year warranty on its spray and transfer wheel line markers from November 1.

The 3 year manufacturer’s warranty will apply to Pitchmark’s range of ‘Eco’ spray markers, as well as the ‘Classic’ range of wheel-to-wheel markers.

Speaking on the decision, Pitchmark MD Mark Rodman said: “Having used line markers for over 30 years as an ex-groundsman, I know the

importance of being able to rely on the machine working when you’re out on the pitch, in the cold and wet, on the morning of an important fixture.”

“We’ve always had complete confidence in the quality of our materials and craftsmanship, as well as the reliability of our markers,” Mark added.

“Extending the warranty to 3 years is a reflection of that, and - combined with our excellent levels of support, fast delivery and superior products – it’s something we feel will add to the Pitchmark customer experience.”

The industry-leading Eco

Club, Eco Pro and Classic line marking machines are all hand-built to a high standard at Pitchmark’s HQ in Bristol by their experienced manufacturing team, and are supplied in over 20 countries worldwide – including to major tournaments like World Cup 2014 and EURO 2016.

“We made a conscious decision from the outset to build our line markers here in the UK,” Mark explained. “It gives us a level of precision, care and control we feel just can’t be matched on machines built elsewhere.”

Additionally, Pitchmark’s complete range of line marking paints are offered with a 1-year warranty, as opposed to the standard 6 months offered by other paint manufacturers.

Pitchmark will be exhibiting on stand E125 at this year’s SALTEX at the NEC, Birmingham. You can also see their products in action outside at Demo Plot 1.

Stem Injection Systems (SIS) makes its annual return to SALTEX hoping to add to the wide range of UK and international customers that it has signed up at the show since first exhibiting there in 2004.

The simplicity but effectiveness of its patented stem injection equipment, expertly demonstrated on stand by the company’s technical sales team, has always made it a popular exhibition attraction and one that could be relied upon to excite experienced operatives as well as ground maintenance teams new to the challenges of invasive plant treatment programmes.

One long-standing customer of SIS has been Ipswich Borough Council. It bought its first stem injection system directly off the SALTEX stand in 2007 and a second one shortly afterwards as it quickly recognised the

equipment’s benefits, specifically its ability to deliver small quantities of herbicide in a highly localised dose.

Nick Wilcox, Holywells Park manager and area supervisor for Ipswich Borough Council’s parks division, explained: “Even before we met SIS we had begun to recognise that traditional treatment methods such as foliar spraying and dig and dump were no longer the most effective or economically viable. As a progressive council we actively went in search of a stem injection alternative, even before it was widely available, and that chance meeting with SIS at SALTEX 2007 changed our treatment programmes for ever.”

In the years since SIS first launched its system, stem injection has become the most reliable, fit for purpose system for contractors and ground

maintenance teams on more and more tender specifications.

If Ipswich was one of the first local authorities to recognise stem injection, many other councils have since followed suit, alongside landscapers, river management teams and leading agencies such as the National Trust, Forestry Commission and various Wildlife Trusts.

The new ProNitro coated seed will be the real highlight on the DLF/Johnsons Sports Seed stand at J100.

Visitors will be able to witness a demonstrational video of ProNitro in action and speak to DLF’s technical product managers about any element of seed and turf management. They will also be launching the latest in the ProNitro range of Johnsons Sports Seed mixtures, J Nitro 4Turf.

Thanks to its rapid establishment, improved colour and enhanced disease resistance the 2016 formulation of Johnsons J 4Turf tetraploid ryegrass delivered successful results for Groundsmen around the country this spring.

Especially effective on worn sports surfaces and high use areas on the golf course, such as paths and tees, its popularity this season has seen it being the latest addition to the list of ProNitro coated mixtures.

The new J Nitro 4Turf seed will further enhance establishment, especially when overseeding into a competitive sward.

Visitors can also discuss other products from the Johnsons Sports Seed and Masterline ranges, both of which utilise DLF cultivars and breeding technology.

ATT to showcase wide pitch mower and TMSystem

Advanced Turf Technology (ATT) will be showing its range of turf maintenance products.

Following on from the 30” version of their popular INFiNiSystem, a must see on stand F041 is the recently launched INFiNiSytem34 alongside a range of cassettes from their flagship product, the TMSystem.

The INFiNiSystem34 bring new performance to sports turf with much more functionality than any other wide pitch mower. The unique floating head mechanism offers a precision cut and results in fantastic panelling as well as reducing overall ground pressure – advantageous on

semi synthetic pitches such as Desso Grassmaster - without affecting striping.

It gives the flexibility of being able to change between hybrid power and pure battery offering a cost effective alternative that can largely pay for itself through annual fuel savings alone. Now the bigger brother to the existing 22” and 26” models for golf and the 30” model for sports pitches, the INFiNiSytem34 has made waves in the industry finding homes at some of the top and most well respected football stadiums in the country.

The ATT TMSystem consists of a range of 10 SMART cassettes which enable different

maintenance activities to take place - aeration, brushing, de-thatching, scarifying, top dressing, grooming, levelling and mowing. For the sports turf market, the TMSystem unlocks the full potential of John Deere,

Dennis & SISIS to take centre stage

The joint stand of Dennis and SISIS (E070), located at the centre of the exhibition halls, will feature a vast array of world-class turf maintenance equipment when the exhibition opens its doors.

Amongst the impressive line-up of products from the British manufacturers is the SISIS Javelin Aer-Aid 1500, a tractor mounted vertical action air injection aerator.

This popular machine injects air directly into the root zone speeding up the aeration process, moving air uniformly throughout the root zone for complete aeration and not just where the tines have penetrated the surface.

Its air injection tines are specially designed to use the maximum air available from the compressor and it has a wide working width to ensure outstanding lawn care whenever you are ready to aerate.

It provides the operator with the flexibility to alternate tines for other operations such as hollow coring prior to top dressing. Other benefits to users of the Aer-Aid include fast forward speed for excellent productivity, smooth and quiet operations and minimal maintenance.

SALTEX visitors will also get the opportunity to see two top performance pedestrian scarifiers

in the form of the Rotorake 600HD – which contributes to aeration and compaction, and the Auto Rotorake MK5 - which comes with range of interchangeable reels.

Flying the flag for Dennis will be the G860 which comes with an extensive range of unique features and benefits. With the interchangeable cassette system; the user has the option of fitting 11 quick changeover cassette including scarifiers, verticutters, brushes, spikers, and slitters as well as 6 or 8 bladed cutter cassettes.

Featuring a large diameter front roller with an adjustable scraper which has been designed for a precise height of cut control, giving an excellent finish, it also weighs in at just 166kg making it perfect for stadium pitch mowing. After being selected as the chosen mower for the 2016 UEFA European Football Championships in France; it’s easy to see why so many groundsmen already use this machine.

Dennis and SISIS’ experienced and knowledgeable members of staff will also be on hand to offer valuable advice about specific turf maintenance programmes and all visitors to the stand will be able to get their hands on the new product brochures.

Verti-Drains at the double for club

Ramside Hall Hotel and Golf Resort just outside of Durham City was recently extended to feature two 18-hole championship golf courses.

Following the trend, course manager of 23 years Roger Shaw recently extended his fleet of machinery to now include two Redexim Verti-Drains from Charterhouse Turf Machinery. In the autumn of 2015 Ramside purchased a high-speed VertiDrain 2220 to accompany the heavy-duty 2.5m Verti-Drain 305 they’ve used for over 20 years.

“We were in need of an ‘allround machine’, said Roger, “with the 2220 finding its natural niche over the 36 greens. Having our own range of machinery means we’re not

relying on contractors and gives us the fl exibility to use it as much and as often as we want.”

He, and his team of 10 greenkeepers, are looking forward to running the two machines in conjunction to relieve compaction and keep surfaces free draining around the course.

“One of the benefits of adding a second Verti-Drain to our portfolio was the option of interchanging tines with the larger model,” he continues.

“We can run tines in the 305 and when they get down to 9 or 10” long they become perfect to work in the 2220. Recycling the tines mean we can maximise the life of them and reduce our costs.”

Another selling point was that, compared to competitor machines, the Verti-Drain is fitted with hydraulic depth control meaning adjustments to the tine depth can be done from the tractor seat

“With the Verti-Drain 2220 being lighter, faster and more manoeuvrable we can work on new areas and really focus on the greens, tees, approaches and walk areas more than we’ve been able to in the past,” he concludes.

“This year so far we’ve be out on the greens aerating regularly to get them through to October, it will prove itself to be a real workhorse for us.”

Frilford Heath opts for Otterbine Air Flo 3

Water conservation is a hot topic at the moment and any way to re-use, recycle and utilise that resource on a golf course is good news.

Working towards a degree of water self-sufficiency, Frilford Heath, a 54-hole championship golf course complex seven miles south of Oxford, has had an Otterbine Air Flo 3 installed in its 6m, 10 million gallon reservoir to aerate the water and make it good enough quality to irrigate the course.

Course manager Sid Arrowsmith, who has been at the helm of Frilford Heath since 1994 and is one of only 70 BIGGA Master Greenkeepers, tells us the improvement the diffused aeration system has made to the water quality since installation is “significant”: “The Air Flo has had a big job to do. Our holding reservoir is a fantastic resource, but the water at the bottom had become too unhealthy to go on the turf.

“Under licence from the Environmental Agency, the water is piped from a brook down stream through farming fields, bringing pollutants such as waste and silt with it. So, even as it arrives, it’s ready for

a clean. Because it’s not feasible to empty the old reservoir water out before the new water arrives, the water at the bottom was very old and probably hadn’t seen the light of day for up to 10 years; as a result it was starting to smell and turn black in colour.”

The Air Flo 3 pumps air to diffusers on the lake or pond bed to release oxygen, creating mass circulation to the bottom and top water layers without affecting the water’s surface. Sid says it’s this circulation that will clean the water: “Churning the water up from the lower levels will allow the aerobic bacteria to do their work and metabolise the nutrients. This process takes time considering the volume of water but we had water ready to use within 12 weeks, which is a significant improvement.”

The ultimate aim is for a degree of self-sufficiency and Sid and the club have been working with the Environmental Agency every step of the way towards ensuring the reservoir is a sustainable entity; holding good quality water accumulated throughout the year and ready for irrigation in the summer and whenever else needed.

Operator comfort is guaranteed with its wide area rider pad and anti-vibration rider platform with anti-slip, giving supreme confidence and safety. Powered by the Kawasaki 19Hp professional electric start engine FX600V, it also comes with a long life AGM battery.

Durability gives Etesia the edge

Hire company Acacia Groundcare Equipment Rental has praised the Etesia Attila ride-on brushcutter.

The firm, based at Henfield, West Sussex says the ground care hire market is burgeoning because in these times of restraint some end users are reluctant to buy equipment used only seasonally or for one-off tasks, meaning that hiring machines for specific jobs or for specific periods of time can be more cost-effective.

Acacia has clients across the whole of the South East, from

Dover to Reading. Ninety per cent of its business is with commercial users ranging from landscape contractors, to housing associations, schools and National Trust properties. The remainder is with large property owners.

As well as the Attila brushcutters, other Etesia machines owned by Acacia for hire include Hydro 80 ride-on cut and collect mowers, a 124D ride-on mower and range of pedestrian mowers.

GSM adds Terra Clean 160 for new school season

Contractors Grounds Maintenance Specialists Ltd has taken delivery of a Wiedenmann Terra Clean 160. The Northumberland based company has a sizeable portfolio of education establishments on its books, with a growing emphasis on artificial maintenance.

Julian Acton, GMS director, said: “We have almost 200 school clients all of whom expect a first rate service.

“Some of the more elite surfaces have around a million filaments per square metre and under the terms of their carpet warranty have to be carefully maintained on a regular basis. Pitch owners are recognising now that if a

synthetic pitch is ‘cared for’ then it more likely to achieve its allotted life span.

“Many stand-alone sites aren’t always in a position to maintain their own pitches. In some instances they have nowhere to store machinery or can only afford limited kit.”

The Terra Clean 160 is the fifth Wiedenmann machine in the GMS fleet and will serves as a sweeper, cleaner and collector. It has a cyclone filter system which draws and removes dust cleverly inspired by the engineering solutions pioneered by trucks operating in sandy deserts.

SISIS Multitiner receives top marks

Head of grounds, Bob Carder, has claimed that his SISIS Multitiner tractor-mounted drum-type aerator keeps the turf “nice, clear and breathable” on the playing fields at the Stamford Endowed Schools in Lincolnshire.

The Stamford Endowed Schools are situated in one of the finest historic market towns in the heart of England and comprise of a junior school, a high school for girls and a school for boys.

Each School benefits from its own site and a wide array of sports is catered for across the school’s vast playing fields. Rugby pitches, football pitches, hockey pitches, tennis courts, cricket squares and two synthetic surfaces are all frequently played

on and with close to 2,000 pupils across the three schools, Bob and his six members of staff certainly have their work cut out.

With such heavy usage, Bob adheres to an intense aeration programme to keep the playing surfaces at Stamford Endowed in the best possible condition. Aeration is important to improve drainage, reduce turf compaction and thatch build up and he believes his SISIS Multitiner offers the perfect solution to keep up with the rigorous demands of maintaining healthy turf on some particularly complicated surfaces.

“We have to spike because we’ve got 38% clay content on the 1st and 2nd team rugby pitch – hence why we’ve gone for the SISIS

Multitiner 1.8m. Before this, we had a different machine which was 1.6 metres with not so many tines on it. When we had a demo of the Multitiner I was instantly impressed with the width of it and the fact that it goes so much deeper than our old machine. Health and safety played a big part in it as well - the Multitiner is far safer than the other machine because it is all enclosed. It also puts in around 50 more holes per pass in comparison to our previous one.”

The SISIS Multitiner 1.8m is a tractor mounted drum-type aerator which is ideally suited to a range of applications from sports field maintenance, lawns and amenities. It has three drums with independent rotation and

its interchangeable tines with a maximum depth of 100mm ensure excellent turf care when the time comes to aerate.

“It’s a good, quick machine to use, it’s steady and quiet, and provides an excellent finish – for presentation purposes it’s a great piece of kit,” adds Bob.

Pellenc launches new generation hand-held blower

Five years after the release of the first generation batterypowered hand-held blower Airion 1, Pellenc has launched the Airion 2. The new generation hand-held blower is more powerful, more accurate and more comfortable, based on customer experience feedback.

As with the older version, the Airion 2 can be used near noisesensitive areas such as hospitals, hotels schools, camp sites, town centres, etc. It is also perfectly suitable as a cleaning tool for roads alongside sweepers at any time of the day and works just as effectively as a replacement for the traditional sweeper in towns as it does in parks and gardens.

Weighing just 2.55kgs, the power of the Airion 2 has been enhanced by 30% compared to the first version and is the only batterypowered blower available on the market with a thrust of 17.5 newtons, while its low noise (79 decibels) can reduce the nuisance for the operator and their working environment. It is also waterproof to IP54 standards.

As with all other Pellenc products, the Airion 2 uses the ultra-high capacity technology of the Pellenc lithium battery and guarantees non-polluting, odourless operation with quick start-up and up to one day battery life.

The Pellenc ULB battery range is designed for professional tool use. Pellenc is the only professional tool manufacturer to offer a whole range of tools that operate with ultra-high capacity multi-purpose batteries.

Greedy machine makes light work of tough jobs

The Professional Leaf Suction Unit by SCH is a greedy leaf eating machine, powered by a 9hp Honda engine.

The unit is mounted on a two wheel chassis with a towbar and can be attached to a leaf collecting trailer which can be supplied by SCH on request –or the customer can modify and use their own. Leaves are sucked up through the 200mm wide hose. They are then chopped by

the fan as they enter the trailer which greatly reduces the space they take up and so reduces the number of times the unit has to be emptied.

The wandering hose has a comfortable handle and can reach underneath rows of trees, into flower beds and up to the edges of walls.

Synthetic success at Bloxham School

Tom Hall, deputy head groundsman at Bloxham School in Oxfordshire has reported excellent results from using SISIS equipment to maintain the school’s two synthetic sports surfaces.

Standards are extremely high, as you would expect at a school of Bloxham’s stature, and equally impressive are the first-class sports facilities.

As well as a plethora of grass sports pitches, Bloxham also features two synthetic surfaces, and to maintain

these the grounds team relies on a range of SISIS equipment.

“Here at Bloxham, one of the synthetic surfaces is sand filled and the other is sand dressed. Predominantly we use the surfaces for hockey, but during the summer, we also have tennis, and in some circumstances we use it for cricket.”

“We use two pieces of SISIS equipment to maintain our synthetic surfaces - the SSS1000 Sweeper and the SISIS Twinplay

Implement Frame, complete with a straight and zig-zag Brush.”

The SISIS SSS1000 is a tractor mounted sweeper which can be pulled by any machine. There are no tools required for the adjustment of the brush or the angle of the draw bar and to make storage easy the draw bar lifts to an upright position. With an aluminium hopper with stainless steel mesh, any infill that is collected when using the machine is returned back down to the surface leaving it free from contamination of debris.

The SISIS Twinplay tractor mounted implement frame can be fitted with several attachments for the maintenance of synthetic surfaces and Tom chooses to attach the SISIS straight brush and the SISIS zig-zag brush –which he claims “do exactly what they are supposed to.”

Richmond GC choose Trilo again

Richmond Golf Club in Petersham, Surrey, has recently invested in a new Trilo blower from Vanmac to help with the leaf clearance around the course.

The Trilo BL960 blower is the latest purchase for the club and is one of the most powerful on the market, at home on the golf course as it is in a large open space.

The reverse exhaust spout can be altered 180o altering the

direction of airflow meaning areas can be cleared to both the left and the right. In the last month, the BL960 has been out of the course everyday as the leaves have started to drop.

As the largest blower in the Trilo range, the BL960 requires a 50hp tractor, has a capacity of 385m3/min and delivers an airspeed of 75m/s.

Putting ECHO to the test

The ECHO PB-251 power blower has a 24.5cc stage 2 compliant low emission engine, with an output of 0.70kW, belting out a maximum air speed of 71m/s.

Wet leaves are effectively lifted and quickly driven into piles and yet the blower was so easily controlled at an angle that it had little effect on the rubber surface.

A neat feature is the Cruise Control which locks the throttle in position so you don’t need to keep your finger on it.

The exhaust is at the front so even the low emissions are directed away from you, and there is an EZ lock system for securing and disconnecting the blower pipe.

A see-through fuel tank makes it easier to keep an eye on the fuel level. In all a high-powered, well-balanced and easy to use blower that made short work of a mountain of leaves.

Votex clearing the way for Sunderland AFC

Thatch and debris can be common problems on football pitches but Glen Campbell, academy head groundsman at Sunderland AFC’s Academy of Light, has found a way to clean

up his act.Using a Votex VT420 compact vacuum sweeper supplied through Greenlay our dealer for the North East, Glen maintains clean surfaces at the UEFA five star training

facility for all of the Black Cat’s academy players and first team.

The impressive suction power and low overall weight of the Votex has been a real improvement for Glenn giving a much cleaner operation and lower surface impact.

“The wheels are a lot wider and the machine is lighter as well so there are no tracks left or compaction of the surface which is very important,” he said.

“We have to make sure the pitch is soft for the players to prevent stress injuries so it works very well in that respect as well.”

Sweep away the snow

The SweepEx range of push brooms offers a good choice to suit the task at hand and in particular the MegaMax which is not just a push broom, it is also a bulk volume mover.

Hitched to a telehandler, fork lift, skidsteer or tractor you can use it for clearing leaves and rubbish and at the first sight of snow it will be ready to clear large areas quickly and efficiently.

The MegaMax takes the concept of a heavy-duty broom and adds patented side retainers, which makes it ideal for clearing snow.

The broom holds bulk volumes of material in front of the brush without spillage at the sides. It’s cleverly designed to incorporate end brushes that are carefully twisted, so they actually pull snow away from a curb or wall and push it into the main path of the broom. It also offers a squeegee effect on wet surfaces. Similarly it will deal with other materials, sweeping them out of

awkward corners, which makes this all-rounder good for yards, warehouses, amenity areas, construction sites, farms and landscaping projects.

As there are no motors, belts or chains and no flying debris, the MegaMax is safe and maintenance free, with hardwearing brushes designed to sweep up to 450 miles before the hard-wearing polypropylene bristles need changing. Even then it’s an easy job to replace them. Another key feature is

the bristles are rigid enough to allow the broom to stand up without additional support for quicker and easier mounting to the host vehicle

There is a variety of SweepEx push brooms to choose from including the basic ValuSweep, to the Mega and SweepEx Pro, to suit all applications. The MegaMax is available in 1.5m, 1.8m and 2.4m widths.

Wiedenmann’s Super 500 and 600 are versatile three-in-one flail mowers, collectors and verticutters.

Their massive 2500 and 4500 litre tanks mean less time spent emptying. The 2.1 metre high dump facility and variable settings, allow easy and safe tipping into bins and trailers. In-cab remote controls allow the operator to easily change the three operating functions.

In any mode they produce a high airflow which ensures that the collected material is well compacted. Optional golf course and super contour kits are available.

Machine choice offers cold comfort

The range of snow and ice clearing equipment has never been greater, with many companies drawing on experience from harsher climates to deliver solutions. Whether you have a tractor, truck or UTV, there is a snow plough and salt spreader or sprayer to suit, and pedestrian machinery and hand tools tackle smaller areas with ease.

This latest demountable salt spreader from Logic, the PDS150D, is sized to fit onto the rear carrying platforms of UTVs, or with the use of an optional mounting frame, onto a fork lift truck. The un-laden weight is approximately 200kg and with a hopper capacity of 270 litres will hold 300kg of rock-salt, totalling

500kg which is in line with UTV payloads. Its design provides a low filling height, a low centre of gravity and even distribution of weight throughout the distribution process, for vehicle stability.

Designed for roads, pathways, city centres, cycle routes, car parks, at a spreading rate of 10g/ sq m on a road 3m wide, the PDS150D would cover 11km.

It is powered by a 3.5hp Briggs and Stratton engine with incab controls for the two-speed spreading disc, which allows variable spreading widths from 3 to 14 metres. An optional disc shroud is available to reduce the spread width even further

for footpath use etc. It features Logic’s agitation and floor conveyor feed systems, will cast to either side and has an easy to adjust sluice gate to regulate flow.

The hopper, conveyor bed and chassis are constructed from stainless steel for longevity. Mounting is enhanced by rubber pads under the chassis and integral ring mounts for tie down straps. RRP is £6250 and options include a flashing beacon, tonneau cover and fork lift mounting frame.

Logic Today’s Will Rutherford explains: “This latest development provides a suitablysized unit to match the payload

limits of the latest UTVs, which are becoming much more common due to their increasing sophistication, operator comfort and value for money.“

“The range of GDS and PDS salt spreaders have proved to be an invaluable winter maintenance tool for many industry and municipal sectors. Features include a unique agitation system and movingfloor conveyor similar to highway sized salt spreaders, to convey salt to the spinning disc. Through this specific design for the UK market which primarily uses road/rock salt, it provides a reliable and efficient method of application.”

Ground driven GDS and engine driven PDS salt spreaders are part of an extensive range of winter maintenance products supplied by Logic. Should this coming winter be particularly harsh then Wiedenmann has the high performance snow clearance

kit to help local authorities and facility managers cope, says Sales Manager Chas Ayres.

“Particularly in continental Europe, the Wiedenmann Snow Master brand is renowned for being robust and reliable.

Steadily here in the UK it’s becoming more prominent and there has been increasing interest particularly among contractors. Each powder-coated blade is designed as either having a folding blade or as a blade with spring flaps. When ramming obstacles either the entire blade or the single spring flap will fold down making operator safety paramount.”

For the season ahead Wiedenmann has expanded its range to 19 separate Snow Master Blades, from 1.25 m to 2.12 m at virtually every 10 cm interval.

“Last year’s mild UK winter meant that Wiedenmann’s most recent blade development, the Vario Flex, designed for car parks and pedestrian areas, didn’t get the chance to prove itself. It’s a fully adjustable blade with a chameleon quality of readily changing its working shape. It can operate in a straight line to the left, to the right, in a V shape or in an arrowhead formation, making it incredibly versatile. In four widths it has a tilting capability of 30deg to the left or right which helps dramatically with ‘up close’ or work at an edge. The operator simply makes the adjustment from the cab.”

Aside from the blades, Wiedenmann ‘s most popular snow machine is the Ice Master, a combined box spreader gritter. This clever dualspreader is sufficiently compact to negotiate pathways and pedestrian routes yet can spin grit to 6m to clear car parks.

At 1.2 wide, the Ice Master can either be PTO hydraulically driven. The box unit can spread salt, sand or grit either via a drop spread or spinner system. With a flick of a switch the operator can change settings without leaving the seat.

Rock salt can be prone to bridging and tunnelling in vehicle hoppers in damp conditions, warns Kersten UK’s Sean Faulkner, leading to problems with spreading. “Although there are functions on some spreaders to deal with this, the best course of action is definitely to keep salt in a dry atmosphere prior to use. The Crossfire from Meyer comes with the option of a tarp kit, which will keep the salt drier when using the spreader. It is prudent to make sure this is used where possible.”

When salt is mixed with water it also becomes very corrosive, he points out.

“Spreader parts can be extremely susceptible to corroding. This will affect the performance and longevity of the machine. Corrosionresistant parts are good, but equally important is the ability to take the spreader apart quickly to clean off all the parts and grease all necessary points. The easier the machine is to maintain the lower the potential for downtime during the season. The Crossfire has an easy access panel for maintenance and the spinner, motor and auger system can be removed with just a few bolts.”

Most spreaders are attached to a vehicle which will also be exposed to the same harsh conditions. The Crossfire comes with features that protect the vehicle from coming into contact with excess salt, such as sides which overhang the body of the vehicle they sit in, Sean adds.

“The performance features of the spreader are important. Larger

motors will be less likely to stall due to blockages. Other features such as inverted V’s over the salt delivery system and vibrators will reduce the frequency of blockages in the first place. The last thing you want is to spend all your time in the back of the spreader clearing salt blockages in the early hours. The Crossfire has a large marine grade motor making it very reliable.”

“Precise application of the salt is crucial for some customers: the Crossfire has baffles over the spinner, which control the salt placement, preventing unwanted burning of grass verges and salt being wasted in ditches or gutters.

Adjustable spinner speed will control how far the salt is flung, and an adjustable auger will control the volume of salt that reaches the spinner.

It is also important to consider the storage of spreaders during the off season, Sean suggests.

“The Crossfire is able to be stored on its end or taken apart easily for more compact storage, allowing valuable space to be used for other equipment for the rest of the year. Forklift pockets make them easy to move about and put on and off the vehicle.”

HME snow ploughs are manufactured in the UK by

Marshall Engineering Ltd. using the latest CAD technology and modern manufacturing techniques to ensure they withstand the toughest winter conditions.

Features such as spring break back protection (prevents damage to key mechanical components when the snowplough blade hits an obstacle on the surface) are standard on all models.

Heavy-duty adjustable castor wheels and a reversible rubber wear strip are designed to make the product robust and suitable for heavy duty commercial applications. HME snowploughs are compatible with John Deere compact tractors and can be mounted directly to the chassis or to a front loader with hydraulic angling as an optional extra. A separate range is available for other tractor makes.

The company suggests that applying de-icing chemicals in liquid form has many advantages over the traditional solid salt products, as the de-icing time is lowered, while liquid salt melting is also said to be kinder to metal, eg cars, trolleys; liquid products are also easier to store.

Liquid can be up to 50% cheaper than salt and sand, points out SCH.

With a capacity of 270 litres, the sprayer features a petrol powered pump and a wide spray boom incorporating two large nozzles. The unit is skid mounted for use on almost any truck or trailer. A hand lance can also be supplied

as an optional extra so that areas not accessible to the vehicle can be reached.

The pallet is 2030 x 915mm and spray width is up to 3300mm. Other units can be produced with different tank size to suit individual requirements.

The standard model retails for £1360. In southern parts of the UK, the BOSS’s straight blade ploughs have proved to be the choice of professionals. In the northern parts, where deep snow is more common, BOSS’s Power-V blades are the best option to combat the white stuff, suggests Antony Fowlds, Regional Director of supplier Gritit.

SnowEx salt and grit spreaders are the professional

Designed and manufactured to perform in the harshest of environments, SnowEx is built to be tough. In-cab control units provide precise operation of spinners and augers, combining quality with accuracy, and enabling operators to prevent overspreading and material wastage.

SnowEx offers spreaders from 47 to 4500 litre capacity, and can be mounted on virtually any host vehicle including ATV’s, UTV’s, 4x4’s, pick-ups, tractors, trailers, forklifts, flat bed trucks and in fact any vehicle that will tow.

All SnowEx vehicle spreaders feature: 12V DC direct drive motor mounted in a weathertight enclosure - reliable power in every situation; high density polyethylene, UV protected hopper in safety yellow - zero corrosion and reduced weight; revolutionary maximum torque transmission featuring a hardened steel worm and bronze gear - no chains, pulleys, drive belts or gears to break or wear; and full spare parts back-up on all SnowEx products, including pedestrian spreaders.

“Without giving up strength, BOSS has designed products that are lightweight enough to fit the majority of 4x4s and SUVs in the UK, meaning that they can get to wherever they are needed. When the ploughing is completed the best practice is to finish the job with spreading of grit/salt using any of our VBX hoppers and the TGS tailgate mounted spreaders. This will ensure that any remaining thin layer of snow will melt and the area will be free of any ice.”

Antony points out that even though UK winters vary in intensity, two things that remain a constant for customers are

Jacques Shelton, Business Development Director says “DMMP has made a commitment to deliver the highest quality snow and ice control equipment in the industry.

Our range of high quality, commercial use spreaders, sprayers and tools are predominately built in the USA Snow Belt, where winters are harsher. We want to help our customers in preparing for the winter weather and help to reduce the number of slips and accidents on snow and ice.”

The EarthWay EV-N-SPRED 2040Pi+ high output spreader has been specifically designed for spreading ice melt, rock salt and other poor flowing materials. The 2040Pi+ comes with the EarthWay high output shut off system enabling large gauge materials to spread more easily. This machine is ideal for commercial use over small areas, suggests Jacques Shelton.

The Flex Select spreader from EarthWay has been designed with maximum user comfort and durability in mind. “With the tray system enabling a wider range of materials to be applied with one spreader, EarthWay also offers a new form of vertical agitation and the new two whole drop system to deliver material more consistently and evenly across 180 degree spread.”

EarthWay offers all users a fiveyear limited warranty.

Magnum vehicle-mounted spreaders are suitable for a wide range of users covering larger areas such as carparks and roadways. Hopper capacities range from 105-2500kg, either 12 volt or petrol driven and can be fully controlled from the cab, remotely or via a wiring harness.

To increase the versatility of these spreaders DMMP has designed custom-built trailers and a range of vehicle mounts to enable spreaders to be used on tractors, forklifts and other vehicles.

All Magnum spreaders come with a three-year warranty, with the chassis benefitting from a five-year warranty.

For smaller areas a range of snow shovels and scrapers are also available to ensure paths and driveways are kept clear from snow and ice.

The Penguin SnoBoss is one of DMMP’s best-selling winter hand tools as it enables large amounts of snow to be cleared quickly and easily with its 504mm wide blade, along with the added benefit of being lightweight and durable.

The BustR Snow Shovel incorporates a metal blade and comfort grip, so can be used to shovel snow or for chipping and scraping ice.

Another quick and easy way to clear pavements and driveways is by using the lightweight and bidirectional Polar Tough Plough, enabling fresh snow to be cleared with minimal effort.

DMMP provides a number of sprayers designed for liquid ice melt products. EarthWay S25 pedestrian sprayers enable liquid ice melt to be applied to areas with variable spread width and spot applicator to increase efficiency and safety.

The latest addition to the DMMP range is the Magnum 1000 Knapsack Sprayer, said to be a very comfortable and easy to use knapsack sprayer which comes with a 15 litre tank and with the option of a range of attachments to improve accuracy and application rate.

Simon Richard, UK agent for the Reform Metrac and Mounty bank tractor ranges says, “We are seeing increasing demand for both models based on their year round functionality and in particular winter working capabilities. Having machinery on the fleet that can be used on a range of different winter tasks should be the aim for both local

authorities and professional contractors and Reforms with snow plough or snow blower attached, offer both sectors a proven and safe combination for snow clearance on all types of terrain at up to 45deg working angles, where it would be unsafe to operate on foot.”

The hydrostatic drive, low centre of gravity, four-wheel steer manoeuvrability and strong linkages make them the ideal power base for a range of heavier attachments while the unique crab steering facility gives enhanced stability in extreme situations, suggests Simon. Metrac and Mounty models also offer weight compensation and vibration damping to protect both operator and machine. Reform tractors are from 40hp - 81.5hp

in their Metrac range and 68hp -101hp in their Mounty range.

The latest Gianni Ferrari PG Ride-on mower, which can be fitted with sweepers and snow ploughs amongst the list of attachments for all year use, has undergone ergonomic improvements to increase operator comfort. These include a new electronic control unit with easy to read and water proof display, iso-mounted footrest to minimise vibration to the operator and control panel and levers positioned for easy use.

“One of the Gianni Ferrari range’s key advantages is the front-mounted deck which means it is incredibly versatile which is essential for local

authorities, greenkeepers and parks managers who have to manage the landscape all year round ,” says Managing Director Claudio Ferrari, “In our development programme we have striven to ensure that all Gianni Ferrari models except the mid-mounted deck machine can be fitted with accessories for multi function use.”

“Having the linkage and PTO on the front, allows us to fit the machines with a wide range of equipment. This includes winter clearance such as snow chains, snow blade, snow thrower, rotary brooms and salt spreaders. Some of our machines can also be fitted with soft cab or heated comfort cab to keep the operator in a comfortable environment even during winter time. Heated seats are available as an option, too.”

PRODUCT UPDATE OCTOBER 2016

Hedge cutting range reaches new level

Blaney Agri has launched a new hedge cutter to mark the 10th anniversary of the development of Power Shredder technology.

The new Blaney hedge cutters are available in four series: Compact, Agri, Agri Pro and Contractor. Visitors to the Blaney stand were taken through the numerous features that make them so special.

The C650T, a Contractor series machine with telescopic reach, is designed with contractors in mind and those with tough hedges to tackle. It has been engineered for strength with consideration given to high speed road travel.

The enhanced frame allows it to carry the extra weight which comes with its 6.5m reach and increased oil capacity.

The design team have spent considerable time and investment in developing a machine that reduces the wear often associated with longer reach machines,

with special attention given to reducing the effect of the increased load and stress on moving pivots and bushes.

The telescopic boom is fitted with a unique guideway system to reduce hose damage. Sixteen guides help prevent wear over the years that is common in other telescopic trimmers. They encourage a free an uniform motion to reduce rubbing for longer life.

Avant launches new single speed tool carrier

Avant Tecno has announced the introduction of a new, low emission model within its 7 Series of compact toll carriers to meet a demand for a costeffective equivalent to the 760.

The 755 is powered by the same Tier 4 compliant Kohler direct injection diesel engine as fitted to the company’s top-of-the-range 760i machine. This engine not only ensures quiet running but also uses 20% less fuel than the 750 model.

The low emissions have been achieved by the fitment of a diesel oxidation catalyst which, in combination with the use of ultra-low sulphur fuel, eliminates

the need for serviceable parts in the exhaust system.

In addition, the first oil change is only required after 400 hours and, thanks to the design of the engine, there is no requirement for oil top-ups between services. This highly efficient and quiet engine is also equipped with CAN bus technology and an electronic control unit.

This new machine, which rides on slightly smaller tyres than the 760, develops maximum torque at just 1200 rpm which ensures powerful performance and an ability to operate attachments at low rpm.
