New action group could be the pivotal moment for future of public parks

A new Parks Action Group to help England’s public parks and green spaces meet the needs of communities now and in the future.

The new Parks Action Group will include experts from the world of horticulture, leisure, heritage and tourism, and will be tasked with bringing forward proposals to address some of the issues faced by public parks and other green spaces across England. To support them, government is providing £500,000 funding to kick start their work.

The action group will propose what steps can be taken in line with the government response to the recent House of Common’s Communities and Local Government Select Committee report into the future of parks and green spaces.

The move has won widespread industry backing. Helen Griffiths, chief executive Fields in Trust called it a “pivotal moment” for the future of parks and green spaces.

ongoing research recognises how these spaces

help to address significant public policy issues including health and wellbeing and community integration,” she said.

“We are looking forward to furthering our work with colleagues across the sector to ensure that we value parks and green spaces and take account of the vital contribution they make to local communities.”

Groundwork said making sure that all communities and all sections of society are able to enjoy the benefits of good green spaces is vital. “Joining a local group can help young people develop their skills and older people overcome loneliness,” explained Graham Duxbury, chief executive.

“Well managed green spaces can also help whole neighbourhoods cope with the costly impacts of climate change. We look forward to helping the action group unlock more practical support so that local communities and local authorities can maximise these social and economic benefits.”

The Parks Alliance, which was heavily involved in lobbying for an inquiry into the future of our parks, said cross governmental and sector support would vitally important to the success of the new action group. Matthew Bradbury, Parks Alliance’s chief executive said: “The Parks Alliance is very much looking forward to working with the Minister, Government and the wider sector to secure the future of public parks for the communities that they serve.”

Launching the Parks Action Group, the Parks and Green Spaces Minister Marcus Jones said the Government recognised the value of parks and green spaces to local communities.

He said such sites were crucial in helping to health and wellbeing, as well revitalising town and city centres.

Progreen launches FACTS Golf and Sports Turf Course

Progreen – national suppliers of agrochemicals, fertilisers, seeds, application equipment and training have recently confirmed they are expanding their fertiliser training program further to include the FACTS Certification (Turf) Course for Golf and Sports Turf starting in January 2018. This course follows on from the success of other BASIS courses that they have run in the past including the BASIS Amenity Course (Invasive and Injurious Weeds).

Louise Boothman, Business Manager for Progreen said: “The (BASIS) FACTS Course for Sports Turf sits naturally with Progreen not only as suppliers of

fertilisers, but also because we feel that training and education within our industry is a priority at all levels and that we need to support this.”

The Golf and Sports Turf fertiliser course is a professionally recognised qualification developed by BASIS and aimed at experienced advisors and producers of sports turf. It aims to develop understanding of the requirements of sports turf, the effects of fertilizers (organic and non-organic) as well as the environmental issues around turf nutrient planning.

There has been universal support for the Government’s announcement that it has created a Parks Action Group to identify ways of securing the long-term future of the nation’s parks and green spaces. And for once, it does seem the Government has acted quickly (well, quickly for a typically for a lumbering central government) and acted on various recent reports and studies painting a gloomy future for our parks. For that reason we too applaud the creation of the action group and the inclusion of so many industry bodies in formulating long-term plans. There is one note of caution, the initial £500,000 funding that accompanies the new group is small change and once again puts the industry in the role of poor relation. However, it is a positive first few steps and we will keep a close eye on developments. Dominating this month’s magazine is our look ahead to SALTEX 2017. We have a comprehensive preview of some of the hundreds of exhibitors who will be at NEC Birmingham on November 1 and 2, as well as the seminar programme. It promises to be another busy two days in the West Midlands and TSP Media will be there on Stand 130. Also, this month we take a look at Artificial Surfaces, Water Management, our usual product round-ups and an interview with Andy Wood, recently appointed Course Manager at Enville Golf Club

Prioritise CPD at this year’s Amenity Forum conference

With a total of four BASIS CPD points available at this year’s Amenity Forum ‘Annual Conference and Exhibition’ on 12 October, Professor John Moverley, independent chairman of the Amenity Forum, reminds amenity operatives, advisers and specifiers to keep their qualifications valid and up to date.

“All amenity professionals must have a recognised qualification by law, but it’s vital that it’s kept updated through the annual collection of BASIS CPD points, to ensure practices are in line with innovation and regulatory changes,” says Professor Moverley.

“We aim to promote continuous professional development (CPD), and this event is the perfect opportunity for those in the industry to find out about how to participate in BASIS schemes and courses, as well as receive updates on topical and relevant issues.”

Professor Moverley adds that the Amenity Forum also encourages all organisations and individuals delivering

control programmes to operate within the BASIS Amenity Assured standard, which helps to promote a maintained high standard of practice.

“Professionals that deliver pesticide services to local authorities, industrial, utility or environmental sectors, that want to ensure their advice is in line with the latest best practice, and give credibility to their operations, should obtain this Amenity Assured standard, which is regulated by annual assessments,” says Lindsay Smith-Boam, BASIS logistics manager.

She explains that the Amenity Assured Standard, which is now in its seventh year, was launched in conjunction with the Amenity Forum to help individuals, such as spray operators, advisers and other industry professionals to deliver amenity maintenance and management programmes in the most up to date manner, including the correct use of pesticides.

Fast Track Funding seminars help sports facilities pay for themselves

A series of seminars will highlight an exciting funding scheme which enables the installation of state-of-the-art community sports facilities – in the face of continuing economic challenges and government cutbacks.Fast Track Funding – an initiative from leading synthetic surfacing supplier Notts Sport – has funded

25 new sports facilities worth in excess of £9 million over the past five years.

Fast Track Funding is the only non-traditional funding route for artificial turf facilities – such as 3G football and rugby, or multiuse hockey pitches – proven to be compliant with Education

Funding Agency requirements and local authority or academy auditors.

To showcase this fantastic initiative, Notts Sport is hosting free Fast Track Funding seminars at venues across England, Scotland and Wales throughout November.

These Continuing Professional Development (CPD) events will give all attendees the opportunity to find out how the scheme could benefit them and learn about the experiences of customers who have already had facilities completed thanks to Fast Track Funding.

Shaun Patrick, Chairman of Notts Sport, says: “Our free Fast Track Funding seminar is a fantastic opportunity for staff from schools, local authorities and other sectors to discover all they need to know about how we can help them achieve top-notch sports facilities for their communities.

World Cup hat-trick for Dennis

After being selected as the official mower at the two most recent FIFA World Cup’s in South Africa and Brazil, Dennis Mowers will be the mower of choice for the 2018 tournament in Russia.

The Dennis G860 cylinder mower will have the task of preparing pitches for the world’s greatest football players when the 2018 FIFA World Cup kicksoff in June 2018. Almost all of

the stadiums used throughout the tournament will have their pitches maintained by the G860 and that includes the venues selected for the latter stages of the tournament.

The stadiums hosting the quarter finals, the semi-finals and the final itself have been confirmed as the Luzhniki Stadium, Saint Petersburg Stadium, Kazan Arena, Nizhny Novgorod Stadium, Samara Arena and the

Fist Stadium Sochi – and all of these pitches will be prepared by a Dennis G860, while some will also utilise the Dennis Premier in conjunction with the G860 for matchday preparation.

The Dennis G860 features an interchangeable cassette system to assist with a wide range of tasks. With a simple one minute changeover, users have the option of fitting eleven different types of heads including

“Whether it’s a brand new project or the refurbishment of an existing pitch, the new facility can be installed straight away – and we can provide valuable advice for customers to help them maximise the use of the new space after completion so it can immediately start to pay for itself.”

The company, which has over 33 years of experience in the sports and play surfacing sector, also assures full quality control throughout the installation through its turnkey project management service.

Delegates at SoilsCon 2017, which takes place in Henleyon-Thames on Wednesday, October 18, will learn about the application of drone technology in site assessment, thanks to an additional presentation and demonstration organised by soil and landscape consultant Tim O’Hare for his annual soils conference.

An already packed SoilsCon programme, with speakers including Phil Askew, Carolyn Willitts, Tim and other leading industry experts, will now benefit from an additional presentation by Peter Wilder, who specialises in the integration of surface water management into urban and residential masterplans.

Peter’s interest in terrain modelling and hydrology led him to establish his expertise in drone survey in 2015. With the ability to map, model and design the landscape, he has established himself as one of the leading land planners in the UK.

An associate and consultant to BRE and a visiting lecturer on SuDS and landscape technology at the University of Greenwich, Peter will speak at SoilsCon 2017 about the integration of drone technology into land planning, and the many applications for which this equipment can be used; weather permitting he will also conduct a demonstration of one of his drones during the conference lunch break.

This year’s SoilsCon will be the third soils conference to be organised by Tim O’Hare, and it promises landscape architects, contractors, garden designers, developers, topsoil manufacturers and other industry professionals a day of invaluable professional development, discussion and debate.

For the first time a Soil Surgery will be run during the conference by members of the Tim O’Hare Associates team to help delegates with their specific soil issues.

Latest major investment programme sees Trilo boost manufacturing

Five years ago Vanmac bv, manufacturer of the Trilo range of Blowers and Vacs, opebed the doors to its base in Amersfoort, The Netherlands, now Kellie Wake pays a visit to see the results of the company’s latest €1M investment.

The company started out in 1932 and is now jointly owned by Leo van Loen (grandson of the founder) and Peter van Mispelaar

(almost ‘family’ in that he was an engineer at the company).

Their period of ownership began in 2008 and they have grown Trilo into a truly worldwide company with sales in over 40 countries – the UK being one of the first many years ago. Initially working through an importer, Peter took the decision in November 2015 to bring the UK in line with the rest of

Europe by employing their own direct sales team.

With some 24 years of combined experience of the Trilo range, Jon Proffitt and Jeremy Vincent were the ideal choice. They now split the UK north and south between them and, with the aid of a very comprehensive list of dealers, have overseen a revival of the brand with an impressive increase in sales.

In 2012 Trilo begun a concerted period of ‘product re-think and redesign’ to combine the introduction of modern manufacturing strategies to enable the introduction of even more competitively-priced products (blowers, verticutters, vacuum units/vacuum sweepers and flail collectors). At the time Peter was concerned that they had to reduce prices to remain competitive and didn’t think that was possible with their existing product range and manufacturing processes.

Thanks to clever and attractive redesigns, that crucially have retained the product build quality ethos of rigidness and reliability, Trilo has managed to live up to its ideas. Product redesigns have centred around commonality of major components of the products to enable those cost reductions needed. In turn, this has led to many more options that the end user can specify on a given machine – so much so that an ingenious piece of software was designed by Leo – The Configurator - to aid sales staff and dealers; and ultimately the customer. Being able to custom design an order has led to standard machines being a thing of the past with ‘bespoke’ becoming the order of the day.

To be able to manufacture mainly ‘bespoke’ items the whole business model has been turned over to ‘just in time’

principles for the procurement of raw materials - helping those cost reductions needed by almost eliminating a costly inventory of stock materials. Controlling all of this has been aided considerably by ‘The Configurator’ as all potential or real orders are logged and graded (just quote – likely to order – firm order) so surprises don’t occur.

Every ‘Configurator’ listing is revisited and re-graded as necessary and, once becoming firm, can be slotted into the available production schedule and tracked – all available for the sales staff and dealer to see and the customer to be advised of..

Having achieved all that they set out to do in 2012, the company now needs to gear up for the next period of growth. A €1M building and refurbishment of the production facility is currently under way.

No section of the factory has been overlooked. A comprehensive re-layout of the production flow will be the result with automatic picking of minor parts coming in as well as new painting booths and offi ces – all to be completed by fi rst quarter 2018. When finished, Leo expects to see efficiency improved by 25% and lead times down to two or three weeks.

Snickers working clothes combine to defy the winter weather

Continuous, hard work produces body heat and sweat. But when your rate of work slows, the sweat cools and you’ll start to feel cold and damp.

The solution is Snickers’ very latest garments that deliver advanced ventilation and the ability to control and regulate the heat from your body. They’re great for both work and leisure activities.

Snickers recommend dressing in 3 Layers - just as athletes do when they compete in

extreme weather conditions. The new FlexiWork baselayer undergarments combine Merino Wool with polyamide for warmth, durability and comfortable ventilation.

The body-mapping mid-layer fleeces and knitwear come in a range of styles and fabrics. Both are complimented by a high quality outer shell of ALLROUND wind and waterproof jackets.

Decks get down to business

The Pro-Flex 120 has several unique features that are very important on a trailed contour mower and these are currently only available from Progressive.

The main feature that makes this mower stand out from the competition and perform so well as a contour mower are the floating decks – 5 decks in total that sit on the main frame.

Essentially five walk behind mowers in one, you can’t get a better contour cut from a trailed machine than you do with the Pro-Flex. Each independent

floating deck has shock absorbers to reduce deck bounce as the mower travels over uneven ground and the unique fourway rotating swivel hitch allows

the tractor and mower to travel across uneven terrain without affecting one another.

Sherriff Amenity launches StimZyne

Sherriff Amenity has announced the launch of StimZyne – a new range of hydrocarbon encapsulators and plant growth promoters. StimZyne joins Sherriff Amenity’s leading range of bio-stimulants which are renowned for generating a positive effect on plant health in support of normal maintenance and fertiliser programmes.

Designed to be applied on all amenity turf and approved for use on all soil types, StimZyne brings with it a number of unique benefits to the plant:

• The unique hydrocarbon encapsulator helps to neutralise harmful gases in the soil and release

beneficial nutrients making them more available to the plant.

• The natural properties of StimZyne, supports the microbial population of the soil, imparting efficient nutrient uptake and strengthening grass against pests and disease.

On poorer soils or in areas which are prone to pest attack, StimZyne Plus is recommended as it contains a significantly higher percentage of hydrocarbon enscapulator. This will increase the plant’s ability to survive attacks from root feeding pests.

StimZyne has been designed to be used throughout the year and can be combined with other Sherriff Amenity products for maximum results.

For example, the addition of Nemaflo at 1L/ha will assist in the delivery of the product to targeted areas of the soil for maximum effect.

To further improve the resilience and colour of the turf, GoGreen Select – a complexed iron sulphate, can be added to the mix at a rate of 20L/ha.

ICL paves the way for more games

Nathan Scarff, Head Groundsman at Derby County FC, has revealed that a range of ICL products have helped him achieve his main target of hosting more games at Pride Park Stadium without compromising on the quality of the pitch.

Nathan is entering his third season with The Rams after a hugely successful start to his current role. He was crowned the Sky Bet Championship Groundsman of the Season for the 2015/16 campaign and was one of two Head Groundsmen who were highly commended last season.

However, with the pitch at the Pride Park Stadium in arguably the best condition it has ever been, Nathan and his team won’t be resting on their laurels.

“We are targeting getting more games in the stadium,” he says.

“In my first year here we got an extra four games on and the following season we got an extra four games on top of that. This year we are hoping to get around six extra games without compromising on the quality of the playing surface.

“The new pitch construction, which was installed last season,

combined with quality products, has enabled us to do just this, and I’m feeling confident for the upcoming season.”

Ever the perfectionist, when Nathan started his new role, he was determined to find a range of products that would be most beneficial to the pitch at Pride Park Stadium and there was only one way to find out.

“When I first started here we used four different fertilizer suppliers and monitored them based on the reaction of the plant, the longevity of the product, the value for money - in terms of the amount we needed to get the reaction and how much it was costing. We experimented for most of the year - which included trial boards in which we treated one area while leaving another un-treated, and we did half pitch treatments – we carried out a number of different trials. All of the results just led us down one road - ICL.”

After a season of rigorous testing, Nathan was ready to look ahead to a new season in which he would incorporate a range of ICL products into his turf maintenance programme.

Royal visit to transformed football pitches

A rundown concrete court that was transformed into two stateof-the-art all-weather sports pitches on The Wirral received a Royal visit recently.

HRH Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, will visit Guinea Gap Leisure Centre in Wallasey, which boasts a 25m competition swimming pool, fitness studios and a sauna as well as the 5-a-side multi use games areas (MUGAs).

Wirral Council’s leisure, parks & events website is reporting that ‘pool and sauna opening times will change’ on Thursday due to

the visit by the second in line to the throne.

The project to build the two short-sided pitches in place of the old ‘concrete cage’ at the back of Guinea Gap was part of a wider scheme of improvements at the leisure centre.

The old pitch and enclosure were ripped out and replaced with a new 3G astro-turf surface, enclosed by bespoke combined mesh fence panels and railings installed by Dawn Fencing of Leigh, which has been going more than 30 years and is the only fencing contractor dedicated solely to sports.

The pitches feature the new generation of artificial grass and provide the perfect surface for five or six-a-side football as it is hardwearing and can be used in all weathers while retaining the look and feel of natural grass.

The pitches are divided by a 3m divider fence to create two 20x32m playing surfaces.

To aid ball retention, the fencing goes up to 6m high, comprised of Zaun Limited’s Duo8 Super Rebound combined with 1.8m high blunt top railings on one side, all fixed to the same fence posts to maximise through visibility.

The twin horizontal wire panels are highly durable, low maintenance, ‘graffiti-proof’ and offer great rebound properties similar to a wall.

At the time, Wirral councillor Chris Meaden, cabinet member for leisure, sport and culture, said: “The football ‘cage’ at Guinea Gap had fallen into a terrible state and needed replacing and we believe there will be a tremendous demand for the new, state of the art pitches which are currently being developed at the centre.”

Nick said: “I’m feeling absolutely unbelievable right now. To be honest I didn’t expect this, I

just came here thinking I would give it my best shot and what would be, would be. So to end up winning, it is unbelievable.”

The Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year Awards is a nationwide contest hosted by greenkeepers’ association BIGGA, sponsors turfcare machinery and irrigation manufacturers Toro, and its machinery distributor Reesink Turfcare.

As part of his prize, Nick wins a seven-week scholarship at the University of Massachusetts in the USA, as well as a trip to the GCSAA’s Golf Industry Show in San Antonio and a trip to Toro’s headquarters in Minneapolis.

Quick and easy paving solutions

The owners had a new pool with top quality porcelain tiles selected for the paved terrace surround and wanted to be sure that the pointing they used was going to be durable in this environment, in that it would not discolour or stain the tiles.

Plus the architect was concerned that it was suitable for the narrow joints between these larger format pavers. They had seen other quality porcelain installations ruined by poor quality pointing with cement mortars and even tile grouts that are best kept indoors.

After researching the subject with their paving suppliers they found GftK’s vdw 815+ Paving Joint Mortar from NCC Streetscape, which is

undoubtedly the best pointing to use on such porcelain projects.

GftK’s vdw 815+ is quick and easy to install by wet-slurry application, which also means no waiting for dry weather to prepare, grout, cure and go into service.

It is a unique, ‘state of the art’ material based on epoxy-bound, graded sands, purpose designed for narrow (3-5mm x 20mm deep) joints in quality porcelain and prestige natural stone paving.

GftK’s vdw 815+ is none staining (unlike cement based or gun-applied materials), and wellproven to be very durable in this type of environment –

Five times better mowing with the new Roberine F5

Roberine introduces the F5, which is good news for professionals who want maximum performance.

The 5-series is based on the technology of the 3series, which means that every professional can rely on a concept that has been proven in practice.

With the F5, it is just as easy to mow short and high grass, and it doesn’t matter if it is dry or wet. With the unique construction of the flail mower unit, you can

also be sure of a beautiful cutting pattern without clumping.

The Roberine F5 is constructed to make high-speed work possible in both transport mode and in the field. A strong and clean power source ensures that you can count on maximum power under all conditions. The power source of the is F5 also quiet, which is not only good news for the driver but also for the environment where the work is done. With a mowing width of 345 cm, a lot of work gets done in one pass, and more

metres can be covered in less time. A lot of attention was also devoted to the drivetrain.

Five hydraulically-powered flail units with piston motors that make the machine less susceptible to faults. A striking detail of the unit

itself is that you can mow close to objects, which has the major advantage that almost no manual trimming is necessary afterward. This guarantees maximum performance for every driver.

Townscape Products completes British Army Flying Memorial

Townscape Products has completed its proudest, boldest and most detailed graphic concrete installation to date with the unveiling of the British Army Flying Memorial at the Museum of Army Flying in Stockbridge, Hampshire.

Unveiled in a service of dedication led by Field Marshall Michael Walker, Baron Walker of Aldringham, GCB, CMG, CBE, DL – the cenotaph comprises 39 printed graphic

concrete panels displaying the names of 5,127 British service men and women that have died serving the country since World War One.

The pioneering project is thought to be the first of its kind in the UK and it is believed that printed concrete has never previously being used to display so much text.

When pieces of Slatewood are traditionally split, its minerals give it a natural wave; making it look remarkably similar to worn bark. Like any natural stone material, Slatewood is incredibly strong and hard-wearing.

“We’re always looking for new and exciting products to offer our customers, so we’re proud to be introducing Slatewood into our natural stone range,” said Giles Heap, Managing Director of CED.

Slatewood is a versatile material and due to it’s highly grained texture, it’s perfect for making a style statement in areas that have a particularly high slip-risk, such as sloping paths. Slatewood is also a fantastic element to combine with plants and water, and can be used to create all sorts of different visual effects.

Add textured feature walls or ornamental arrangements, or lead a path of stepping stones set within natural stone aggregates for a captivating contrast of textures; the possibilities are endless.

Fine porcelain pointing made easy with vdw epoxy paving grout

Another great porcelain pointing job using GftK’s vdw 815 Paving Joint Mortar that was the idea; solution for grouting these top quality Emperor Limerick Porcelain slabs.

These are larger format paving (larger format generally means the paving units are larger than 400 x 400mm) and so the jointing mortar must be suitable for smaller joints and ease of application across larger surfaces without staining or creating additional cleaning works.

The advanced vdw 815 material is specifically designed for narrower joints (down to 3mm) in addition to its ease of wetslurry application.

GftK’s Epoxy Resin Bound technology ensures no dusting, full homogeneous mixing and fast application, allowing pointing and

finishing the work in bad weather, even in the pouring rain.

As Richard Bickler of the specialist contractors Arbour said – with GftK Grouts the fickle British Weather does not stop you finishing the job, plus the result is the most durable and jet washing resistant paving grout there is.

Finally on this project the colour was very important as the owners wanted to see the paving rather than the resin and it blended in really well.

Aggregate Industries goes in at the deep end

Aggregate Industries has helped reopen one of Europe’s few remaining saltwater lidos, in a £3 million restoration scheme for the Jubilee Pool in Penzance.

The location of the project demanded specialised design requirements, as being a

saltwater tidal pool meant there was a high risk of corrosion to the concrete reinforcement.

The restoration required a blue coloured swimming pool base to be constructed with a blue pigmented concrete, which had to also comply with an XS2

exposure class – this defines the concrete design requirements to ensure durability for the intended design life.

However, due to the soaring cost of the required blue pigment, Aggregate Industries worked closely with the main contractor, CORMAC Contracting, to propose a more cost-effective solution using a coloured surface hardener in conjunction with a lightened base concrete.

Andrew Wilson, Territory Sales Manager at Aggregate Industries, explained: “We collaborated with the colour surface hardener supplier to provide a bespoke concrete that not only met the XS2

exposure class but the unique requirements of the project.

“The product of choice was a bespoke mix of Artevia Light concrete which not only complied with the exposure class and achieved the high durability requirements but also provided a lightened concrete for the installation of the colour surface hardener. This high performance formula, coupled with a light concrete design to ensure consistency of colour, means the pool not only looks visually appealing but will stand the test of time. In all, we supplied a total of 492m³, which was produced by the Redruth plant.”

Howe Green “raises the bar” at former Olympic site

The 2012 London Olympics and Paralympic Games International Press and Broadcast Centre buildings are undergoing a commercial redevelopment to become Here East – the exciting digital quarter for East London.

Howe Green supplied 12 Medium Duty 7500 Series Stainless Steel access covers to be fitted in a raised floor system in an office building. The covers were ordered with stainless steel Z profi les to provide support to the access cover within the raised floor.

Installed in corridors throughout the building the covers provide a safe and easy way to access junctions in the drainage systems. The 7500 Series were

specified to match the existing raised floor system appearance and were initially covered with plywood and then infilled with a vinyl flooring finish.

Over the years the use of raised floor systems has extended from data centres to commercial offices, educational institutions and hospitals. Aesthetics, security and flexibility are more important in these environments.

The demand for different floor finishes, improved security and the ability to easily reconfigure space has led to increased demand for Howe Green access covers in raised floor systems.

Lytag tees off for relaunch of new drainage material

Aggregate Industries has strengthened its Lytag offer with the relaunch of Sportag, a sustainable, lightweight drainage material.

Made from Lytag’s groundbreaking secondary aggregate, Sportag is an ideal solution for land drainage applications due to its rounded shape and material properties.

With a hydraulic conductivity 10 times that of natural aggregates, the product is particularly suited to golf courses, including slit trenches, gravel banding and Shelton Systems, as well as sports pitches.

Sportag’s secondary aggregate composition also allows for a 30% moisture retention rate, ensuring a healthier and more consistent facility. Reduces drought stress in hot or dry weather. Alongside this, the product’s 40% void ratio helps aid longevity, improving aeration and allowing roots to penetrate further.

Curley, General Manager from Aggregate Industries, said:

“Having an effective drainage system in place will not only help future proof a pitch or green but also helps to ensure playability is possible regardless of season or weather conditions.

“Indeed, this has been a big factor in why Sportag has been so widely used on golf course greens and fairways. Re-launching this product gives us an ideal opportunity to reinforce the many benefits of using a secondary aggregate as a land drainage solution.

“Importantly, too, our Lytag lightweight solution is really leading the way when it comes to improving efficiency and reducing environmental impact in modern construction practice.”

A secondary aggregate and half the weight of standard aggregate, Sportag saves on natural resources, offering greater sustainability and reduced landfill. Its round and lightweight nature also means that it is easily handled, flowing easily into position.

ClearWater makes compliance even easier

ClearWater, by offering their competitively-priced “selfinstall” option, has helped many to be legally compliant.

Recent orders have seen more choosing self-install (around 65% says the company), carrying out the civils work themselves, to reduce project costs dramatically. This has enabled a number of golf clubs and others in turf maintenance to act sooner than was thought possible.

ClearWater’s new owners, Acumen Waste Services Ltd, have stepped in to help by offering credit options. This will be great news to those who know their facilities are illegal and, by spreading payments, can order now and meet their legal responsibilities of pollution prevention.

Legislation states that you are breaking the law by washing hydrocarbons (oils, grease, petrol and diesel) into the ground, leaving yourselves and the business open to prosecution or civil sanctions. All these substances are classed as Hazardous Substances and it is an offence to cause or knowingly permit discharge of such pollutants into the groundwater.

ClearWater is doing its utmost to help you to be compliant with the new three-pronged offer:

1. A competitively priced full biological wash-off water recycling system.

2. A cost saving “self-install” option with ClearWater carrying out commissioning; usually saves £2 – 3K.

Souters Sports bring architect’s vision to life

3. The offer of credit options, helping make compliance that much easier.

There’s another bonus for many too: ClearWater is a Water Technology List (WTL) approved system and, as such, businesses

can write off 100% of their total investment against taxable profits in the year of purchase under the ECA (Enhanced Capital Allowance) scheme; showing even further savings.

After successfully completing a huge bunker renovation project at the prestigious West Kilbride Golf Club in Ayrshire, Souters Sports have been widely praised by both the club’s secretary and architect.

The Souters team briefed, construction commenced in late October and was complete by the end of February allowing time for establishment in advance of the season ahead.

The works incorporated the strategic repositioning of

bunkers, building bunkers in similar positions, shaping support mounding and landform, drainage installation, irrigation alterations and finishing.

The final piece of works was carried out on the 18th hole where the entire hole was rebunkered to create improved strategy and deliver a visually impressive finishing hole.

New Terralift for Terrain Aeration

Terrain Aeration have added a new Super Scamper Terralift machine to their fleet for deep penetration aeration.

Originally a German invention used to aerate around tree roots with a blast of compressed air, the Terralift concept has been in service with Terrain Aeration for over 25 years.

During this time, Terrain Aeration have treated all kinds of turf surface for waterlogging, compaction and panning, from sports fields, golf courses and bowling greens to treating trees in London parks, green spaces and the gardens of new house builds.

The new Terralift machine, built by Terrain Aeration, takes the concept to a new level of treatment for waterlogging. The machine hammers a hollow probe one metre into the soil (with the help of a JCB road breaker gun). Once reaching this depth, a blast of compressed air is released to fracture and fissure the soil.

On the tail end of the air blast, dried milled seaweed is incorporated and this, over a period of time, expands and contracts with the moisture content in the soil, similar to ‘breathing’ underground, which helps to keep the fractures open longer.

The probe is removed and the process repeated using twometre centre spacings on a staggered grid pattern. This grid ensures that each probe shot links with the previous ones. The probe hole is then backfilled with an aggregate to provide a long term aeration/ventilation shaft, allowing air and water to percolate into the fissures.

The top 1” - 2” should have a cap of normal top dressing to encourage the grass to grow over the holes.

The result is an improved healthier root system, a healthier sward as well as less disease damage to the turf. There is no mess,

treatment can in fact be carried out mid season, should a green for example be too waterlogged to play, but otherwise pre or end of season is the best time.

Despite people’s ‘fears’ that the Terralift ‘makes the Earth Move’ - it does, but just enough to show that the ground has been fractured from one metre depth back up to the surface. The slight ‘heave’ will settle down and you are left with a smooth playing surface.

Prior to Terralift treatment it is best to have the area spiked or hollow tined purely to relieve the surface tension to allow air to gently blow through the top surface without causing any disruption.

The Super Scamper Terralift is a compact design which enables it to fit through narrow gaps for access to bowling greens and gardens.

Full marks for Hampton School ensuring environmental excellence

Hampton School have recently installed a Waste2Water Recycling Wash System.

Clive Liddiard, Grounds Manager of Hampton School, is delighted with the new wash facility, which has ensured the school is environmentally compliant.

He is also impressed with the easy maintenance and says the system provides a “superb equipment wash facility”.

“We are delighted the environmental message is getting through with an increasing number of schools and colleges taking their environmental

responsibilities seriously and installing our Waste2Water Recycling Wash Systems,” added Tim Earley, Managing Director of Waste2Water.

If you haven’t already installed a Recycling Wash System to ensure environmental compliance you are overdue to clean up your act, as it is a criminal offence (illegal) to allow substances including mineral oils, detergents and chemicals to enter surface drains, watercourses or Soakaways, causing groundwater pollution.

Call Waste2Water now for a free no-obligation site visit to make sure you are environmentally compliant and take advantage of the cash flow bonus as our Recycling Wash System is approved on the Water Technology List.

Industry showcase provides a wealth of opportunity

Now in its third year at the NEC Birmingham, SALTEX will once again provide a world class industry showcase.

From the hundreds of exhibitors displaying a wide variety of products and services, to the informal networking opportunities and the IOG’s annual industry awards, SALTEX 2017 continues to grow from strength to strength.

Last year, Learning LIVE saw 53 unique seminars, 99 high-profile speakers and many key topical issues explored. For 2017, the programme will follow the same successful format.

Within the theatres a number of influential speakers will be on hand to provide updates and key advice. Mark Pover, facilities investment strategy manager at The Football Association (FA), will be participating in a panel debate entitled ‘Funding the future of natural turf.’ With so much money being invested into artificial turf, SALTEX visitors will have an opportunity to ask the funders if there is a danger of

natural turf being left behind. Commenting on the panel debate, Mark said: “We haven’t forgotten the fact that the majority of football matches in this country are played on natural grass. We have just shy of 800 artificial pitches on our 3G register suitable for affiliated matches and we are continuing to invest in these but there are approximately 23,000 natural grass pitches. Clearly these are very important, as is the quality, so we will continue to improve and use natural turf pitches to keep people playing and also attract new players.

“We are currently spending two million pounds a year on natural turf pitch improvements and I believe that SALTEX is the ideal place to update the industry so that visitors understand exactly what we are doing and the targets we have set. It is also a good opportunity to address some of the negative rumours that are circulated annually and reinforce our commitment to natural turf.”

For those visitors that are looking to progress their career, the

‘Career development’ seminar presented by Steve Chappell, head greenkeeper at the PGA Centenary Golf Course at The Gleneagles Hotel, should not be missed. Steve will be primarily focusing on how volunteering can significantly help improve job prospects.

“The thought process behind the session is to provide a little bit more of an understanding of how volunteering can help improve and embellish your CV,” says Steve. “It can help you stand out from the crowd and be more employable to a prospective employer.

“The seminar would be beneficial for younger people in the industry, and also maybe for those who feel they have become stuck in a rut. The message behind it all, is to use the opportunities that are out there to develop yourself because it can help you take that next step which will give you that career fulfilment you are looking for.”

Additionally, the seminar ‘Making your move’ will be

beneficial in helping a visitor along their career path. Wayne Billing, head groundsman at Northampton Saints RFC; Stuart Kerrison, head groundsman at Essex CCC and Danny Beckley, head of estates and grounds at Harrow School, will all be on hand to reveal the secrets behind making it to the top within their respective fields.

For further inspiration, John Ledwidge will be documenting his rise from starting in an apprentice position through to being the current grounds manager at Leicester City FC in ‘From apprentice to grounds manager’. In a separate seminar John will also be joined by the rest of his grounds team in a session entitled ‘Building a team for success.’

By attending any of these seminars within the programme, SALTEX visitors have the opportunity to enhance their CV as IOG and Basis CPD points are available for all Learning LIVE sessions. Attendance at the seminars can be recorded by picking up a CPD form from

the IOG Hub (Stand C180) and can contribute towards the minimum requirement of 35 hours in 12 months in order to qualify for the IOG’s Certificate of CPD Achievement.

After being motivated by the Learning LIVE seminars, visitors can visit SALTEX 2017’s new feature - the Job Clinic. Located on the IOG Hub, industry expert Frank Newberry will be hosting 15-minute oneto-one sessions covering CV writing to interview techniques. To book an appointment with

Frank, visitors are advised to go to the IOG information desk on the IOG Hub as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

Located in the centre of the UK, whether you are travelling from overseas or within the UK, the NEC is incredibly easy to get to by car, rail or air. No matter what route you take, one thing is certain - opportunity awaits on November 1 and 2 at SALTEX 2017.

Makita to showcase the ever-growing garden machinery range

Makita’s cordless range will be taking centre stage, on the company’s stand in the BALI Zone where visitors can also learn about the entire range of petrol and electric models.

The 18v battery platform makes it economically viable for the tool owner as there is the option to purchase the ‘body only’ version of the tool if you already have the battery. This battery platform has set an industry benchmark but still continues to expand with innovations such as the twin-18v battery 36v application.

Using battery powered grounds care machines means that exhaust emissions are zero –petrol engine exhaust fumes are

eliminated and the risk of ground contamination from spilt petrol and oil is removed altogether.

Many Makita grounds-care machines offer a considerable reduction in vibration and can be used all day without harm to the operator.

Where traditional machines make an awful noise, the battery powered Makita tools are significantly quieter whilst still delivering a professional performance. This quiet approach means teams can work around parks, schools, hospitals and cemeteries without causing nuisance and annoyance.

Ransomes to unveil new TR320 and HM600

Ransomes, the Ipswich-based manufacturer of commercial mowing equipment, will be showcasing the brand new TR320 triplex cylinder mower on stand H090.

The Ransomes TR320 is one of the lightest machines on the market, ensuring that surfaces are kept pristine. A combination of narrow transport width (1.64m (64.5”)), a 1.83m (72”) width of cut, superior slope capabilities and manoeuvrability, allows operators to safely negotiate the tightest of spaces and most challenging terrain.

Designed and manufactured at Ransomes Jacobsen’s European headquarters in Ipswich, the TR320 is primarily targeted at the sportsturf and landscaping market, providing a quality maintenance solution for sports

pitches, estates, and light municipal applications. You are invited to come along to stand H090 to see the latest innovation from Ransomes.

Also, debuting at SALTEX 2017 is the HM600. Built on the foundations of the Ransomes MP wide area mower platform, the HM600 builds upon this, providing users with the ability to run three heavy duty flail mowers with mulching technology from Müthing. With all mowers engaged, the 3.2m width of cut delivers exceptional productivity.

The fingertip control of individual units makes trimming around obstacles easy and brings new levels of versatility to flail mowing. Units fold up securely to transport easily between work areas and access confined sites.

Ransomes is proud to be sponsoring the SALTEX College Cup for the second time; introduced by the IOG as a brand-new national student-led sports-turf challenge that will take place on the first day of SALTEX 2017.

It is an academic test of turf management knowledge for student competitors in teams of four who are enrolled at

colleges throughout the UK on relevant courses of study. As one of the groundcare industry’s major manufacturing companies, Ransomes will also be showcasing other municipal mowers plus Cushman utility vehicles, Iseki tractors and turf maintenance equipment from the Turfco and Ryan brands.

BigMow cutting its way into the turfcare industry

With autonomous robot technology as its core product, AMS (Automated Managed Services Ltd) has been transforming the way we think about outfield maintenance over the past 4 years.

Since its introduction in 2013, AMS has allowed driving range operators to automate the ball management and grass mowing, safely and cost effectively.

With this pedigree in the golf industry, AMS is looking to replicate this success within the Turf Care industry by

showcasing the innovative BigMow robot on stand A030.

The mower can cover up to 2 hectares (20,000 m2 ), making it ideal for sports fields, golf courses, public areas and public or private parks.

The robot uses an underground wired perimeter for navigating; this sends an electromagnetic signal recognised by the robot, via a sensor, that determines its distance from the edge of the grass area.

Hybrid is Pitchmark’s new line

After working closely with a number of leading Premier League clubs, Pitchmark will be introducing their new Hybrid line marker, complete with a lifetime warranty.

This is a real breakthrough for turf professionals and their clubs.

“A large number of top stadia groundsmen use transfer markers for many good reasons,” says Mark Rodman, Pitchmark Managing Director, “it’s easier to lift the back wheels up to mark over intersecting lines, there’s balanced weight and groundsmen like to walk slowly. With a transfer wheel marker you are using the same amount of paint on a pitch no matter how slowly you walk.”

The problems with transfer markers, Mark points out, is that they only tend to coat the tips of the leaf, so to achieve the required result it is double marked. The end result is the paint becomes so thick on the leaf it takes much longer to dry. With many modern ‘hybrid’ pitches requiring regular watering, ‘ghosting’ of paint over the pitch is highly likely.

The patent-pending Hybrid overcomes these problems with a three-wheeled design for

ease of use, especially when manoeuvring over intersecting lines. The Hybrid feels like a transfer marker and comes with a range of nozzles to suit individual walking speed.

“The Hybrid cone nozzles give perfect deep leaf coverage, Mark says: “The thin coating of paint dries extremely quickly so there are no issues with irrigation, rain, or ghosting.”

The Limited Edition UK manufactured Hybrid uses highly-engineered front discs as the front wheel, and solid rear wheels leave less of a mark on the pitch. Designed for use with Pitchmark’s Direct and Ecoline+ low-volume, readyto-use paints, the Hybrid also features adjustable line width to suit different goal posts.

Pitchmark are taking pre-orders now and welcome groundsmen to come along to stand E125.

European debut for new Walker mower

The IOG SALTEX 2017 exhibition, sees the European debut for the new S18 zero turn mower from Walker Mowers.

This new model powered by an efficient Briggs & Stratton 18hp Vanguard engine is both powerful and versatile and comes with a range of cutting widths.

A recent US two-year comprehensive study, undertaken by Walker Mowers, recorded an average 20%-25% improved productivity when using a Walker out front zero turn machine against many popular competitor machines. Following this study and contrary to popular thinking, the highest ground speed does not mean higher productivity. The full results of this study can be found at the www.walker.com website.

Supporting the new S18 model on display, will be three other popular models showing the versatility of the machines and attachments that allows the customer to build the exact model to match their needs and budget, all sharing the

advantage of easy and responsive mowing. A spokesman for the new UK operation said ‘the range of machines on display demonstrates that with Walker, the option of mulching or collection, diesel or petrol, high or low dump means there is a machine that it is right for all customers’.

Newly appointed Area Sales Managers will be joined by Ryan Walker, third generation of the family owned business, on stand E010, to meet with customers old and new to discuss the new growing opportunities for both dealers and commercial operators that the new UK organisation

and extended range of Walker machines can offer

Line markers are easier and more accurate

The line marking industry has evolved dramatically over the last 20 years.

Advancements in technology have revolutionised the way lines are marked on sports pitches.

Fleet are the only British company that manufacture satellite guided line marking machines, writes the software as well as makes the paints and if

that isn’t enough the company are introducing a new flushing nozzle system - The Flozle (pronounced flow-zle).

All grounds managers have problems with blockages. The advantage of The Flozle is this unique patented system (GB2511372B) (EP3079831A1 pending) can keep the line marking tip clear at all times.

Fleet have automated this procedure, as well as making it available by choice to the operator.

After each line is sprayed a small amount of water is automatically flushed under pressure through the tip keeping it clear and clean.

Other advantages are cost savings, up to half a litre of paint can be wasted when

flushing a nozzle tip through a standard spray marker, whereas the Flozle uses the equivalent of two teaspoons.

The efficiency and cost savings, eliminating down time and saving paint are huge.

The Flozle is predicted to be the industry standard for a spray line marker.

The patented system (GB2511372B) (EP3079831A1 pending) designed by Fleet will be on display at stand A070.

For more information and to request a demonstration please call 01684 573535.

Woven technologies from GreenFields

GreenFields is a manufacturer as well as an installer of synthetic and hybrid pitches.

GreenFields MX Elite passes and excels every industry test and is a firm favourite with the top tier of clubs around the globe.

From training pitches at Arsenal FC, Celtic FC and Charlton Athletic FC to stadium pitches at Falkirk FC, Alloa FC, Hyde United FC and Glasgow Warriors as well as installations at national sporting centres of excellence like the Welsh Rugby Union and Scottish National Performance Centre- Oriam, and this is just in the UK alone.

The reason for such big clubs opting for GreenFields MX Elite; the close resemblance to natural grass both visually and in playing characteristics.

The patented woven technology used results in an extremely high tuft bind not only forcing the fibres to stand straighter but also facilitating positive infill movement and equal ball roll from one side of the pitch to the other.

With XtraGrass, GreenFields have found the perfect solution for teams combining natural and artificial grass in their hybrid product for the best of both worlds. With some similar top names opting for it, XtraGrass has also been installed

at the KNVB and PSV Eindhoven as well as Oxford United FC, the Ricoh Arena (home to Wasps RFC and Coventry City FC) and elite international and national rugby training facility - The Lensbury Hotel.

GreenFields XtraGrass combines the positive properties of natural grass with artificial fibres for a year-round green surface giving the visual impact required for the television cameras, whilst maintaining stability and minimising scarring.

The synthetic fibres are woven into a partially biodegradable backing ensuring lateral strength to support the pitch. The open matrix allows the grass plant roots to grow through the fibre and to access moisture and nutrients. An alternative installation approach to seeding is to utilise XtraGrass farmed turf rolls which can be laid down with play possible within a matter of days.

For more information on GreenFields or their woven technologies visit the team on their stand (D042).

Finalists announced for IOG Industry Awards 2017

The finalists have been announced from a record-breaking entry to this year’s prestigious Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG) Industry Awards 2017.

Now in its ninth year, the awards – which enjoy headline sponsorship by Rigby Taylor and Top Green – acknowledge the passion, dedication and challenges faced by grounds staff, volunteers and professionals across all levels of sport.

“Once again we have enjoyed a record-breaking entry to the awards,” says IOG chief executive, Geoff Webb. “Nominations this year rose by 93 per cent, which illustrates the esteem in which our industry – from all corners of the UKholds the awards.

“The judges, all of whom are groundsmen, were particularly impressed with the quality of the submissions. In fact, the standard of nominations improves yearon-year.

“Everyone who has been nominated should be recognised, regardless of whether they make the shortlist or, indeed, go on to be named as winners. It just shows the range and dedication of those working at both professional and volunteer level, day in and day out in all weathers to ensure our sports men and women, young and old, have available an increasingly higher standard of playing surfaces.”

Geoff adds: “The awards would not be possible without the generosity of our sponsors, and these companies and organisations have enabled the event to become a landmark event every year.

“The industry’s support is invaluable and it has created the conditions for a sell-out event and one that enjoys national and regional TV, radio, social media and press coverage.”

Independent judging at each venue will now take place. The winners will be announced Oscar-style at the IOG Industry Awards dinner by host Mark Saggers from talkSPORT radio at the National Conference Centre, Birmingham, on Wednesday 1 November – the evening of the opening day of the SALTEX exhibition at the nearby NEC.

A question of sport

SCH (Supplies) Ltd have been exhibitors since the very beginning and always enjoy meeting with old and new customers.

This year, their main focus will be on their range of artificial surface maintenance machinery. SCH’s various sweepers, rakes, drag mats, brushes and sprayers will take centre stage. Managing director Andrew Rodwell says that this is currently one of the fastest growing categories of machinery in the company.

“We continue to develop our 3G products to keep in line with a very fast moving, evolving sector,” he said. “We work with artificial surface maintenance contractors to ensure our machines are perfect for the job as well as being affordable.”

There will be several examples on display at the show but suggests that interested parties also take a look at the website – www. schsupplies.co.uk – to see the entire range. One sports surface

maintenance company, ETC Sports of Maldon, Essex, are very happy with the great working relationship they have with SCH.

“ETC have been working with SCH (Supplies) Ltd for several years, and we continue to be impressed with their ability to interpret our requirements and produce machinery which does an excellent job at an affordable price,” says ETC Maintenance Manager, Rory Wells. “As well as supplying equipment that doesn’t

Campey returns with additions to their all-star line-up of machines

Campey Turf Care Systems will be bringing an all-star line-up of machines, including the introduction of new Koro FIELD TOPMAKER model. The new 1.6 metre model of the Koro FIELDTOPMAKER will be at the centre of Campey stand D117, and will be launched

to the sports turf industry as a natural evolution of a truly innovative machine.

SALTEX will also see the launch of a newly designed and patented Universe Rotor, developed by Campey Turf Care Systems in response to requirements from professional groundsman working out in the field. The FTM will be joined by the newly upgraded Koro TopDrain 1000, specifically designed to be used on sports pitches and golf course fairways. It complements the successful TopDrain 1500 machine that harnessed the unique function of trenching, removing spoil, injecting sand and re-compacting

the surface all in one operation. It also offers material and labour savings, faster processing times and less contamination than conventional methods.

These machines will sit alongside the award winning Air2G2 Air Inject, an aeration machine that is becoming a stalwart of the Campey range.

It uses pressurised air to target compaction deep at root zone level. Probes penetrate the soil and force air sideways to create fissures in the sub structure improving aeration and drainage throughout the soil.

let us down, the after sales service and support we have from them has been absolutely top notch.”

SCH will also have some of their range of heavy duty natural turf care equipment on display, which Andrew tells us was extremely popular at last year’s show.

The company plan to have other items from the rest of their catalogue. In particular, the budget ranges including lawn care, trailers etc, which have proven

very popular with groundsmen. Feedback suggests that this range of products is far more robust than similarly priced items on the market, but is economical in that it allows the buyers to have more money left in their budgets to invest in other essential items.

“We always have a stand at SALTEX because it is the perfect place to let customers see the products for themselves and to ask my team any questions they may have,” says Andrew. “But in the

midst of all this serious business, we do like to inject a bit of laughter. So we have a fun competition running and an entertaining giveaway on the stand. Please come and see us, we look forward to meeting you.”

Bomford Turner to reveal two new remote controlled models

Bomford Turner’s two new models it will be unveiling consist of a compact 40hp model and a much larger Supreme 70hp model.

Each of the two tracks can be independently extended by the operator by 250mm / 10”. By widening the footprint to aid stability and grip, the mower can operate on inclines up to 55 degrees.

With a powerful Perkins 40hp/70hp engine variants, twin-track grip, excellent manoeuvrability and flexible tool attachment options, Flailbot delivers robust allterrain performance.

Rubber and studded steel track choices offer the best traction for different surface conditions, whilst automatic track tensioning prevents track loss.

To maintain the optimum cutting height and angle, the cutting heads float over the terrain, adjusted automatically. A range of tools and accessories allow Flailbot to be configured for a wide range of applications, including stump grinders, trench cutters, earthmoving, snow clearing and agricultural processing.

Remote control makes Flailbot ideal for use on hilly, banked and even mountainous areas. With a range of up to 150m / 492’, the

remote ensures precise joystick control of forward or reverse track speeds, from 0-7 km/h / 0-4.5 mph. The unit also displays real-time data, including machine incline, attitude and speed.

Gripple tree anchoring kits make light work of tough tasks

Gripple, the multi awardwinning innovator, offers a range of cutting edge kits for quick, easy tree anchoring and guying of newly-planted, semi-mature trees, replacing the laborious installation of wooden stakes, all supplied in ready-to-use kits with a strap tensioning system

With three or four anchor points to speed up installation, Gripple Root Ball kits are for trees from 4.5m to 12m in height and 25cm to 75cm in girth. Long-lasting, allowing trees to establish

naturally, the kits remain underground thereby reducing trip hazard and deterring vandals.

Offering the benefits of the Root Ball Kit, the Premium Root Ball Kit includes the Gripple Dynamic range to provide increased strength, flexibility and adjustment during installation.

Similarly beneficial, Gripple’s Deadman kit and Concrete Fixing kit are specifically engineered for the simple, strong and secure anchoring of newly-planted trees where concrete is involved.

The Deadman Kit is used when the driving of anchors is not possible, into concrete blocks for example, and a more traditional ballast system is the solution.

The Gripple Concrete Fixing is designed where concrete flooring or containers are below the planting location.

More information about Gripple’s other tree anchoring solutions can be found on stand C105.

New Knotweed code of practice to be published

Japanese Knotweed Control is returning to SALTEX to raise awareness of a new Code of Practice for the management of Japanese knotweed.

The INNSA Code of practice foreword has been written by Trevor Renals of the Environment Agency, and the Code has been co-authored by INNSA (The Invasive NonNative Specialists Association), alongside plant experts from Japanese Knotweed Control (JKC).

JKC are founder members of INNSA, and at the forefront of encouraging the highest standards within the industry. INNSA aims to provide members, customers and clients with peace of mind and quality standards assurance.

The Code of Practice contains the most up-to-date advice for those who may encounter, or need to manage, land that is susceptible to or infested with the invasive plant. Japanese Knotweed carries a significant threat to amenity, built and natural environments of the UK.

In following the guidance of the new Code, users can avoid excessive and recurring costs, physical damage to manman structures, harming the environment and even potential legal action.

INNSA and Japanese Knotweed Control are urging organisations to follow the guidelines outlined in the Code of Practice to raise the quality of service in the industry. Property owners, alongside professionals and industries that serve them, will be afforded greater peace of mind thanks to the assurance that, using the Code, Japanese knotweed will be controlled at the highest possible standard.

Japanese Knotweed Control was founded in 2004, as one of the UK’s fi rst specialist knotweed remediation companies. Today it operates nationwide to remove invasive plants from domestic, commercial, and public properties. JKC has drawn from its extensive experience to provide valuable insight for the writing of the Code, and now JKC is campaigning to raise awareness and encourage organisations to follow the advice.

David Layland, joint managing director at Japanese Knotweed Control, said: “Events like SALTEX are critical in spreading awareness of important campaigns, and building their momentum throughout the industry.

“Last year’s campaign, Gone But Not Forgotten, proved incredibly helpful in debunking the many

myths and misconceptions surrounding Japanese knotweed. The new Code of Practice will prove just as useful; helping readers to navigate complex legislation such as that of waste and biodiversity, whilst outlining management options to control infestations in a way that reduces risk and saves time and money.”

The key recommendations of the Code include:

• Identify any suspected Japanese knotweed on a site as early as possible, to allow the accurate assessment and preparation of cost options.

• Keep the amount of any Japanese knotweed-infested soil excavated to a minimum, and never accept topsoil until it has been inspected for Japanese knotweed rhizome (root).

• Make sure staff can identify Japanese knotweed rhizome and vegetation so any infestation can be better controlled.

Japanese Knotweed Control will be at stand J189 to talk to visitors about the INNSA Code of Practice and the management of Japanese knotweed. SALTEX 2017 will mark JKC’s 11th appearance at the conference.

MJ Abbott returns after a year of hybrid pitch constructions

The past 12-months has seen MJ Abbott complete a number of hybrid pitch re-constructions in the UK and Europe across football and rugby.

Two years ago SIS Grass was introduced to the turf market and the popularity of the new hybrid surface has continued into this year, with MJ Abbott the principle company to prepare surfaces ready for stitching by the machines in the UK.

Newcastle United has installed SIS Grass at St James’ Park with Championship Sides Reading and Birmingham City also installing the system at their respective stadia.

Projects were also completed at the training home of Paris Saint Germain, seeing the installation of the HERO hybrid carpet

turf system within two training pitches and the match pitch.

Rugby was also on the agenda with Doncaster Knights RFC re-constructing their Castle Park pitch to facilitate the installation of an Eclipse hybrid carpet turf system, provided by County Turf.

Away from team sports, there has also been several golf projects undertaken, including being appointed as the main contractors for Royal Norwich’s £4.5million new course project.

The company also worked on the extremely well received multimillion-pound facelift of the West Course at Wentworth for the BMW PGA, which received rave reviews from players and pundits alike.

Meet the grass shaping the future of stadia

Barenbrug, the grass expert, is bringing an innovative living display to SALTEX this year.

Visitors to stand G055 can get up close and personal with a sample of RPR Stadium turf –the revolutionary grass taking the stadia world by storm.

Dr David Greenshields from Barenbrug said: “This grass seed blend has been formulated to deliver performance traits that are key to stadium environments; wear tolerance, recovery, disease resistance and camera-friendly colour.

“People can visit the stand and view the seed mixture in a hybrid turf – the stolons of our unique RPR technology, knitted together with artificial reinforcement is a potent combination.

“You really need to see RPR in action to understand how this self-repairing grass can form

entirely new plants to counteract intense wear.”

RPR STADIUM is the result of three years of mixture trials at Barenbrug’s Cropvale

research site in Worcestershire.

Simulated wear and a range of objective measurements have delivered a grass seed mixture that offers proven and unparalleled performance

under criteria that are relevant to a winter sports stadium environment.

Integrated vegetation management from Bayer

As the final herbicide treatments of the 2017 season are applied, it is time to start considering next year’s integrated vegetation management programmes, and SALTEX is an excellent opportunity to speak to the experts at Bayer for advice and guidance on this.

The BASIS-qualified Bayer Turf and Amenity Solutions Team will be available on stand D037, to give an insight into the future of plant protection products and show how Bayer products fit into programmes that consider weed control in a wider sense than just chemical intervention.

Lewis Blois, Bayer national account manager explains that he will discuss how using an integrated approach to vegetation management is essential to securing the future of plant protection products, and how the industry is shifting to favour this management method.

“More and more companies and authorities are asking contractors to consider using alternative methods of control in conjunction with herbicide applications. So, visiting the Bayer stand will give individuals the chance to ask questions about these, as well as find out how chemical controls,

such as leading herbicidesFinale® 150 and Pistol®, can fit into any integrated management programme.

“This year will also mark the first appearance of our latest turf fungicide, Exteris Stressgard, at SALTEX. It’s received great feedback from the greenkeeping market, and the event will be an excellent opportunity for those involved in professional sports turf management to find out about the innovative new product, and how it can fit into their disease management strategies,” says Lewis.

In addition to this, Dr Colin Mumford, Bayer technical manager, will present a session at the event on 1 November

at 1:20pm, on the topic of integrated disease management, including product development, application, waste management and stewardship.

Also on the stand, will be information on the easyFlow – the first contaminationavoiding, self-cleaning transfer system for liquid plant protection products.

“The easyFlow can be secured onto a product bottle to assist with tank mixing and filling, and is proven to improve operator safety by 96%, as well as being an important tool for environmental stewardship,” says Lewis.

L list for lawns, landscaping and summer sports thanks to a fineness of leaf scoring of 8.8 – half a point ahead of its nearest rival. Cabrio is available exclusively from Germinal as part of the company’s ‘Grade A’ range of grass seed mixtures.

“The Grade A range has been designed specifically for use by professional groundsmen who are looking to achieve a billiard board smooth playing surface,” Richard Brown, Germinal Amenity Sales Manager explains.

Cabrio is included in Germinal’s A5 Cricket, Tennis and Tees

seed mixture where it is paired with Escapade, the “number 6” perennial ryegrass variety in the Turfgrass Seed booklet’s Series L list for 2017.

Cabrio is also included in Germinal’s A10 Golf Tees and Divot Repairs and A28 Ultrafine Ryegolf mixtures. In all three mixtures, the inclusion of Cabrio creates a seed mixture which gives a high density, wear tolerant sward with rapid repair capability.

Headland and Bayer continue their partnership

The co-operation between Headland Amenity and Bayer Cropscience continues at SALTEX 2017.

Following the launch of Exteris Stressgard at BTME, visitors to Headland’s new stand, D022, will be able to find out more about Bayer’s Dedicate turf fungicide. This revolutionary product slots in with the Headland range of innovative turf nutrition, health and management products.

Dedicate is an established contact and systemic fungicide offering preventative and early curative control of turf diseases.

Of particular interest to groundsmen is Dedicate’s ability to control Leaf Spot (Helminthosporium spp.) and Rust (Puccina spp.) in sports turf. It contains dual active ingredients, Tebuconazole and Trifloxystrobin and should be used preventatively or as early as possible when signs of disease occur.

As well as sports turf, Dedicate is approved for use on all turf

areas including commercial and residential lawns, golf greens, tees and fairways, parks, bowling greens and cricket pitches. This low-dose, rapid-acting formula is available exclusively from Headland Amenity.

A great tank mix partner to Dedicate, or other fungicide applications, are plant elicitors such as Headland’s TeMag Elite.

Launched at SALTEX 2016, TeMag Elite is a water-soluble iron and micronutrient package, ideal for strengthening turf over the autumn and winter periods.

It contains Headland’s Elevate Fe and, in trials, has shown to minimise the effect of turf pathogens such as Microdochium nivale (Fusarium Patch) and Sclerotonia homeocarpa (Dollar Spot).

TeMag Elite also contains Harpin Protein, a plant elicitor, which stimulates the plants natural defence mechanisms, aiding growth through periods

of stress, disease and/or nematode damage.

In addition to many currently available fungicides, it is also fully

tank mixable with most liquid and water-soluble fertilisers, biostimulants and pesticides.

A solution for every surface on Stand E070

Dennis & SISIS (Stand E070) will be living up to their reputation of having worldclass maintenance equipment for every type of playing surface with a wide range of equipment on show.

Featuring prominently on the stand will be the SISIS Javelin Aer-Aid 1500 – a tractor mounted vertical action aerator offering air injection, which recently gained rave reviews from the STRI (Sports Turf Research Institute).

Over a three month period, extensive STRI trials led by Dr Christian Spring were carried out which examined how and if the Javelin Aer-Aid had an effect on the hardness of the turf, the root depth, water infiltration and disease.

visitors will also get the chance to see the newly launched Spring Tine Rake cassette – which has been specifically designed for the Dennis G860 cylinder mower.

Operators already have a plethora of options through the G860’s interchangeable cassette system, which includes scarifiers, verticutters, brushes, spikers, slitters and six or eight bladed cutting cylinders; and they will

be pleased to see the launch of the Spring Tine Rake. This new cassette contains 42 springs with 12mm spacings that can be used for the removal of dead turf matter, cleaning the surface and helping to scratch through the black crust that commonly appears on the surface thus improving drainage.

The SISIS range of pedestrian scarifiers come highly recommended by turf managers, and a number of these products will be featured on the stand such as the Rotorake 600HD and the Auto Rotorake MK5. With a range of interchangeable reels consisting of thatch removal, thatch control and a range of brush reels, the Auto Rotorake MK5 can be used for several different tasks including scarifying, verticutting and brushing.

From the same range, the Rotorake 600HD is a heavy duty pedestrian scarifier and linear aerator. This versatile machine is equally at home when used for regular routine use at a shallow setting or a deeper setting when required. It also contributes to aeration and compaction relief by cutting clean, continuous slits by utilising a high tip speed to assist water and air absorption.

For a machine which is equally effective on both natural and synthetic turf then look no further than the SISIS Osca – a tractor mounted powered oscillating brush.

Also on the stand will be the SISIS Quadraplay; a single pass maintenance system which incorporates a mounted frame for up to four implements and the SISIS Towed Implement Frame which is designed specifically for daily maintenance of artificial surfaces – it can also be fitted with a number of implements including the Flexicomb and Straight Brush.

Also featuring from the SISIS portfolio is the Autoslit and Multislit, and visitors will get the chance to find out more about these unique products.

The SISIS Autoslit powered deep slitter is a familiar sight in a turf manager’s inventory, and offers deep, clean penetration with minimal surface marking. Possessing the same outstanding qualities as the Autoslit is the SISIS Multislit - a tractor mounted deep slitting lawn aerator. Both machines produce excellent underground cultivation due to the angle of the tines, with the spiral design of the tine shaft assisting penetration. Their simple design also means that they require little maintenance.

Visitors to the joint stand will no doubt already be aware of the highly regarded Dennis FT pedestrian mower series. Available in 17” (43cm), 20” (51cm) and 24” (61cm) cutting widths, the FT series is an interchangeable cassette mower giving options to fit 12 different heads which offers the versatility that is essential for a busy club. The speed and ease of changing these cassettes has made the FT range a firm favourite.

SALTEX attendees can expect to see the Razor Ultra 560 which has a 560mm (22”) cutting width and incorporates many key features including an 11 bladed cutting cylinder, ultra-short wheelbase for undulating surfaces, tungsten tipped groomer, compact handle design for extra manoeuvrability, click height adjusters and stub free transport wheels for easy transport from site to site.

Advanced cultivars and mixtures from DLF/ Johnson’s Sports Seeds

Leading seed breeders DLF will be, showcasing two of the company’s latest breeding innovations, 4Turf Tetraploid Ryegrass and the new Turf Type Annual Ryegrass Quickston.

DLF’s technical team will also be on hand on stand J100 to offer advice on the latest cultivars and mixture selection from both the Masterline and Johnsons Sports Seed ranges.

As world leaders in tetraploid ryegrass technology, DLF’s 4Turf Tetraploid Ryegrass cultivars are of particular interest to groundsman currently considering autumn and winter overseeding mixtures. 4Turf has very good wearing qualities, exceptional tolerance to a broad range of common turf diseases, germinates quickly and offers extreme winter hardiness.

4Turf tetraploids develop a stronger, deeper rooting system which also improves the efficiency in which nutrients, including Nitrogen, are utilised. Found in Johnsons Sports Seed mixtures J Pitch, J 4Turf and J Rescue Stadia, as well as PM70, 79 and 81 from

Masterline, this new species is highly suited to sports turf applications thanks to its strong colour and rapid establishment, even in cold conditions.

Also present in J Rescue Stadia, along with Johnsons J Rescue 100, is the latest turf type annual ryegrass cultivar from the DLF programme, Quickston. Quickston sees a significant improvement in the colour, fineness of leaf and shoot density of turf type annual ryegrass. Annual rye has the fastest establishment time and will germinate under low soil temperatures (down to 3.5oc) making it a popular choice for any winter or spring turf repairs.

In addition to seeing up-close some of the new grasses and technologies, visitors will also have the opportunity to enter a competition to win enough Johnsons Sports Seed mixture to renovate their sports pitch. DLF are also once again proud to be sponsoring the IOG Groundsman of the Year award at the annual IOG industry award ceremony.

GreenMech’s Arborist 150p is a cost effective alternative to diesel

GreenMech’s new Arborist 150p will be on show for the very first time, as well as a number of the company’s most popular woodchippers.

The GreenMech team will also be on hand to discuss the many aspects of the company’s extensive range of professional chippers on stand H075.

Developed in response to the upcoming changes to emissions legislation effective from 2019, the new Arborist 150p is the latest addition to GreenMech’s popular Arborist range and offers a cost-effective alternative to diesel powered models. Fitted with a 37hp Briggs & Straton Petrol engine, it can offer comparable performance to the higher horse-powered diesel engine of the existing Arborist 150, but at a much-reduced cost.

Designed particularly for the disposal of waste brash, the diesel Arborist 150 is the top selling chipper in its class in Europe and will remain available for those customers for whom diesel remains their first choice. Also

fitted with a petrol engine is the Arborist 130, a popular low-cost entry point for a hydraulic chipper.

For smaller jobs in tighter spaces the compact CS100, with its working width of just 760mm, is the ideal option for ‘on the spot’ chipping. A powerful yet compact workhorse, the CS100 can process solid timber of up to 100mm or large volumes of bushy material thanks to its wide, open in-feed chute. The CS100 is designed with

the Professional Landscaper, Arborist or Parks Manager in mind. Visitors will also have the opportunity to speak to the GreenMech Finance team, who will be on the stand to discuss the flexible finance options currently available, along with details of a special show offer. As standard, all of the machines within the GreenMech range come with an unlimited-hours, 3-year parts and labour warranty.

Charterhouse bring some of the old and some of the new

Charterhouse Turf Machinery will be highlighting the Graden GBS1200 at SALTEX this year. As always, they will also be showcasing a vast array of equipment for the care of both natural and artificial sports surfaces as well as landscaping products from the BLEC range on an adjacent stand.

The Graden GBS 1200 is a 1.2m straight reeled unit ideal for flat areas such as sports pitches, cricket squares, tennis courts etc. This model can be mounted onto a 20hp+ tractor and can scarify to various depths of up to 45mm.

The tempered steel blades, in optional widths of 1mm or 3mm, feature 8 tungsten tips and are fitted in reverse rotation to slice cleanly through the turf while the deep scalloped design prevents the blades from becoming clogged.

Aqua-Aid EU to bring uniform success

Aqua-Aid EU is bringing the unique range of products to Birmingham for the third time.

The real growth in popularity has come not just from the sportsturf industry but within the horticulture and agriculture markets. The universal action of Worm Power to increase root mass has led to it being used in the production of strawberries and apples in Spain, blueberries and apples in Holland and growing hops for beer in Germany, where they’ve found a healthier blend of fewer diseases and increased yields recorded throughout all trials.

Worm Power, Oars HS, Oars PS, PBS 150 and Verde-Cal have all seen a surge in use across the UK and Europe across golf and football, but also horse racing over the last 12-months, and the Aqua-Aid product specialists will be at the show to advise on their plethora of products.

As business has grown and developed, so has a brand-new Aqua-Aid website, which will be launching for the show.

From Redexim, the Rink DS800 top dresser, which compliments the company’s range of VertiDrains, will be another popular highlight. The Rink DS800 can be either trailed behind a 30hp compact tractor with the benefit of 4 wheels on an articulating axle, or fitted to a John Deere Pro Gator or Toro Workman truck for a light foot print. It has a variable spread

pattern up to 12m (36ft) and gives a very good finish due to the dual spinners which can apply precise amounts of material, even if the material is wet.

Meanwhile the Verti-Top, from the Redexim Verti-Art collection, continues to set the standard for the cleaning and maintenance of synthetic turf surfaces. The powered rotary brush sweeps to a predetermined depth in the carpet lifting the pile and extracting the top 1mm - 15mm of infill along with any foreign material. A

sieve then separates the infill from the detritus, the infill is returned to the surface, while the detritus is collected in the hopper of the machine. The cleaned infill is brushed into the fibres of the carpet leaving a clean, level and aesthetically pleasing finish.

A new face can also be found on Stand K070, as Ian Lauder Northern Territory Sales Managers makes his SALTEX debut.

New TWIGA compact 360 makes debut

Spearhead Machinery will be displaying a range of vegetation management machinery that will suit any amenity or ground care contractor needing a tough but compact product.

Making its debut, Spearhead will give the new TWIGA 360 Compact Front Mount its first official outing to the UK public at the show this year, effectively increasing the TWIGA Compact Reach Arm series from two to four models.

The new TWIGA 360 and 460 models have been designed for front mounting to a compact tractor or utility vehicle to optimise operator visibility and flexibility from the cab, with both models now incorporating longer reach lengths to extend the working area around the machine.

Improvements to the reach arm have been made through an added offset pivot position which allows the operator to work in

tighter, higher spaces giving more manoeuvrability.

Another notable new feature is the fold flat arm position bringing the machine over for a lower point of clearance to improve visibility.

Spearhead Machinery will be on Stand L107 where representatives will be pleased to demonstrate the new features of the TWIGA Compact range to stand visitors.

Wiedenmann UK’s trading division, GroundPro, adds two mounted Maredo machines

GroundPro, a trading division of Wiedenmann UK, has partnered with Maredo BV to offer two tractor-mounted machines to the British and Irish market.

The MT200 Flex-Verticutter and MT210 VibeSpike-Aerator will be premiered on stand A080.

Both outstanding machines attach to tractors 25 hp and up and provide rapid responses to difficulties that may occur in the vital area lying just beneath the turf surface.

Controlling thatch in the top layer is key; too much organic matter can be a problem. The MT200 Flex-Verticutter is a scarifier which removes thatch both cleanly and incredibly quickly. Three independent floating heads mean that any undulating surfaces pose no challenge thanks to an easy turn ‘A’ frame and pivot point. Each head is a fraction over 63 cm wide so they combine to offer a span of 1.9 m, all working to a depth of 25 mm. Choose full depth to remove a lot

of organic matter or let the blades just touch the top layer for a light grooming.

The MT210 VibeSpike-Aerator relieves compaction and allows air to permeate especially when time is at a premium. Unlike traditional spiking, the vibration action is built in to the three separate floating heads. All six spike sections per head are mounted on a camshaft. When the PTO is engaged the spike sections start to vibrate. The vibrations shatter the compacted top layer leaving clean slit holes at the surface. Depth adjustment is toolfree, the adjustable support front roller and rear solid roller work in tandem to offer penetration from 20 mm to 55 mm.

David Rae, managing director of both GroundPro and Wiedenmann UK said:

“These are really strong offerings by Maredo, available shortly via our dealer network across the UK and Ireland. Both are accurate and efficient with great

build quality. The new machines share the same frame so only additional heads are required to switch tasks. The triple heads tackle contours in their stride. Most of all these are built for speed suiting professionals working against the clock or with finite weather windows.”

GroundPro established its name by offering the range of ProCast capacious bulk blue and green top dressers, famous for their sturdy tanks yet nimble manoeuvrability.

Reesink Turfcare launches Toro groundscare mower

New to Reesink’s product line is a machine that revolutionises clipping clear up and elevates productivity to new levels.

With a 41L fuel tank and 810L capacity hopper, plus the ability to change the height of cut without stopping, Reesink Turfcare says productivity is at an all-time high with this machine.

Jeff Anguige, national sales manager at Reesink, says: “This new launch will appeal to councils and landscape contractors looking for minimum downtime.

“The fuel tank is large enough to power a full day’s work, while the increase in the hopper’s capacity is accompanied by a sensor which alerts the operator when the hopper is full. That prevents unnecessary stopping to check and empty. Changing the height of cut is intuitive and quick with adjustments made possible from the operator’s seat.”

The new machine will be revealed on stand H010, where Reesink Turfcare will have all of its brands in tow. Bringing for the second year running, a full line-up, including the latest popular products from Toro turfcare machinery, Toro irrigation controllers and sprinklers, Otterbine lake and pond aeration systems and TYM compact tractors.

Products on stand from the Toro groundscare range include the highly versatile heavyduty Toro LT-F3000 triple with its two-in-one machine cylinder attachment option, for switching between long or short grass; the Groundsmaster 360 Quad Steer zero-turn mower for ultimate manoeuvrability; the hard-wearing Groundsmaster 7210 zero-turn rotary mower for the toughest of groundscare jobs, and the Groundsmaster 4000-D with SmartPower, which alters engine speed according to the contours for optimal blade power.

Concluding the line-up from Toro is myTurf, a fleet management programme which offers automatic log recording of all machines in operation and instant ordering of replacement parts when due.

Preventative maintenance, repairs and parts are all tracked online as part of myTurf, allowing for a more accurate calculation for cost of ownership.

Representing Toro’s irrigation range is the Lynx Central Control system, with its intuitive technology, and Infinity 55 sprinklers with Smart Access, the perfect pair for maximising performance and efficiency. Also on stand are the TS90 and T7 sprinklers with TurfCup, a feature for hidden infield irrigation and for seamlesslooking turf, as well as the Flex 55 sprinklers.

For optimising oxygen levels to keep water healthy, Otterbine offers a range of versatile and cost-effective aerating systems and fountains that improve water quality and enhance aesthetics.

The brand’s best-selling Fractional five-in-one aerator delivers the highest performance rate of any fractional aerator on the market and is joined by the Concept 3, the aerating fountain that perfectly illustrates how industrial aerators can give the best of both worlds offering function and beauty.

This year is also the first year that Reesink will have two stands – H080 will be entirely dedicated to TYM Tractors, with the new T393 with the option of a factoryfitted air-conditioned cabin and the TS25 coming to represent the compact tractor range built purposely for mid-duty groundscare applications. The BH120 rotary tiller and TE145 flail mower from the recently launched range of attachments from Sicma completes the line up from Reesink.”

Reesink Turfcare’s marketing manager Holly, comments: “There’s lots to be excited about this year. SALTEX is the perfect platform for our new launch and it’s great to have representation from all brands at the show. We look forward to welcoming everyone to our stands to see the line-up and share invaluable advice from our specialist groundscare machinery team.”

Perfect platform for STIHL to highlight pro cordless range

STIHL’s Lithium-Ion PRO Cordless product range offers contractors the durability and longevity needed to handle the toughest jobs. Taking centre stage will be STIHL’s new FSA 130s, powerful and lightweight brushcutters specifically designed for working on large areas of thick grass at length.

Visitors to the stand will be able to see up close the powerful HSA 94 hedge trimmers, ideal for maintenance teams working in urban areas, especially around schools, hospitals and housing estates. The extremely high-performance and robust professional cordless hedge trimmer is available in a heavy-duty cutting or a high speed-trimming version.

The BGA 100 will also be on display, an extremely light and

quiet hand held blower that comes with three power stages as well as a boost mode, perfect to tackle those difficult tasks, especially in noise sensitive areas.

All the products can be used in conjunction with backpack machinery, offering the high capacity contractors require in the grounds care industry.

Simon Hewitt, Head of Marketing at STIHL GB, said: “The popularity of cordless tools continues to rise and exhibiting at Saltex provides us with the perfect opportunity to highlight to contractors how our LithiumIon PRO range can handle even the toughest of jobs. We are very much looking forward to seeing new and existing customers at the show.”

World’s top brands displayed by T H WHITE

Some of the world’s top names in groundcare machinery –including Ferris and Wright mowers, Spider slope mowers and Jensen woodchippers - are now being imported to the UK by T H WHITE Machinery Imports.

The opportunities that have come with these new brands mean that T H WHITE is now seeking the right dealer partners in certain areas of the UK with whom mutually-beneficial relationships can be built.

American-built Ferris zeroturn mowers with patented independent suspension have long been recognised as supremely comfortable ride-on mowers, but the range also includes stand-on models with class-leading balance and manoeuvrability, as well as walkbehind mowers with intuitive and user-friendly controls.

On Stand H190 visitors will be able to go hands-on with three Ferris ride-on mowers – the

petrol 52in IS2100Z, the new 61in diesel-powered IS2600Z and top-of-the-range V-twin 72in IS3200Z which combines power with dual, commercial Hydro-Gear ZT-5400 Powertrain transaxles for tough, durable performance.

Wright mowers are well known for the Stander range, driven from a standing position. This makes the mower extremely compact and allows the operator to shift weight instantly for changing terrain.

Spider remote-controlled slope mowers are often termed the ‘safest mowers on the market’. These innovative machines from the Czech Republic are perfect for a wide range of applications involving steep, uneven or sometimes dangerous terrain.

Visitors will be able to see the original 18hp ILD-01 and the super-powerful ILD-02 models, both of which feature patented 360 degree unlimited steering,

forward and reverse 4wd, an integral mulching kit, low fuel consumption and fantastic manoeuvrability. With the optional winch they can operate on slopes up to 55 degrees. For smaller tasks there is the Spider Mini – an outstanding machine for general landscape work that’s more compact and lighter than the ILD-01 and ILD-02 yet with almost the same climbing ability.

The latest machine in the Spider range is the 3RIDER which offers the choice of operation as a ride-on mower on slopes up to 15 degrees, or as a remote-controlled slope mower on steeper terrain. Three steering configurations can be used for maximum manoeuvrability, including zero turn in which all four wheels can be positioned at 45 degrees allowing the Spider 3RIDER to turn around its vertical axis without damaging the grass or soil. Powered by a 24.8HP diesel engine, this fullyprofessional model is suitable for extra large sloping areas and offers the possibility of both cutting and mulching.

Newest addition is Jensen woodchippers, sturdy, high capacity chippers that represent German engineering at its best. Jensen is well known on the Continent and has been manufacturing quality woodchippers for more than 130 years.

Pellenc return with range of professional battery-powered tools

Pellenc will be exhibiting on stand E055 which will showcase their professional range of environmentally friendly, lithium-ion battery powered tools.

A forerunner when it comes to lithium-ion technology and high effi ciency “Brushless” motors, Pellenc has established itself as the number one choice in the “Zero Emission” professional power tools market for the maintenance of urban and green-spaces.

The combination of these two technologies makes it possible to eliminate direct emission of greenhouse gases and significantly reduce noise and vibration. It meets the users’ requirements for comfort and sustainability while offering excellent cost efficiency.

The centrepiece of the stand will be the Cleanion pedestrian battery-powered brush which is

suitable for removing debris from natural and artificial grass and other hard surfaces. The Pellenc Cleanion is a revolutionary, selfdriven brush which is powered by the ULiB battery seen on the rest of the company’s range of tools. With a large working width and a long operating time of battery charge sufficient for demanding professional use.

Other products on the stand will include the Airion 2 new generation hand-held blower

and the Rasion Smart and Rasion Basic pedestrian rotary mowers. Helion hedgecutter, Selion chainsaws and polesaws and the Prunion and Vinion pruning shears will also be available to view.

All Pellenc batteries and tools come complete with a three year commercial warranty as standard - the first manufacturer to offer this on battery-powered tools.

Duralock to launch new product

Duralock is the market leading manufacturer of PVC-u sports and equestrian fencing systems; including post and rail, movable barriers, gates and crowd barriers.

The company has recently launched an exciting new

product under their Duralock Sports Performance Fencing label; Half-Mesh ‘Multipurpose’ Pitch Fencing.

It has been developed specifically with sports clubs in mind and is designed to flex under impact, reducing the

risk of injury. With concealed fixings and smooth rounded surfaces the whole system is exceptionally safe and the half-mesh design prevents the ball from leaving the field of play.

The design also lends itself easily to advertising, allowing clubs to benefit from an additional revenue stream.

All Duralock fencing systems are suitable for use on all surfaces, from natural turf to AGP and 3G and are available as permanent or removable fixtures making them ideal for multi-use sports facilities.

Etesia to launch Greener City Equipment

Etesia will be launching their range of Greener City Equipment on stand C050, which includes a range of environmentally-friendly battery-powered pedestrian and ride-on rotary mowers.

Environmental protection and a commitment to sustainable development in general have always been among Etesia’s key concerns, even before they became the latest buzzwords.

That is why Etesia have developed their own philosophy called Bio Concept. It is

A trio of versatile Trilo products

Trilo will be returning once again on stand G010 with a wide range of blowers, scarifiers and vacuum sweepers.

Particular highlights of machinery for grass and waste management will include the Trilo S3 and SU40 vacuum units and the Trilo B7 blower. As well as getting tailored advice from the Trilo staff on hand, there will also be a chance to win an iPad.

Working at a convenient 1.5 metres wide, the Trilo S3 vacuum sweeper is perfect for clearing grounds and fields. Its modest dimensions and large suction power enable quick and efficient working in small areas and even in wet conditions. It weighs in at only 1200kg meaning it can be used with compact tractors of just 28HP.

The machine can also be equipped with various options including a gully brush, twisted flail shaft or verti-cutting unit making it incredibly versatile. This, combined with the design of the unit, fits the requirements of councils, contractors and Groundsmen alike.

The Trilo SU40 vacuum unit, delivering powerful suction for restricted access spaces. Mounted on a towable chassis, the power unit and 4m wander hose can be easily manoeuvred for rapid vacuuming of leaves, litter, grass, wood chippings etc.

Finishing the line-up is the Trilo B7 leaf blower. A compact, lightweight blower with a large air capacity to ensure ample airflow for blowing leaves, litter or standing water in a desired direction.

With the option of installing a reverse exhaust nozzle operated from the driver’s seat, the B7 can work conveniently to either side of the tractor or by setting the nozzle downwards, can clean both sides of a path simultaneously. Its compact design means awkward corners can also be accessed with ease.

Completing the spec are sturdy anti-scalping rollers and two heavy gauge wheels which help to protect the grass plant on uneven surfaces.

reflected in the fact that environmental protection is addressed in all areas of the company and at every stage in the life of their equipment.

Taking centre stage at SALTEX 2017 will be the Buffalo 124 HVHPX four wheel drive ride-on mower and the Bahia M2E electric ride-on mower. The Buffalo 124 HVHPX is fitted with a 124-cm overlapping cutting deck and a 23-hp two-cylinder Briggs and Stratton Vanguard engine, and has a high hourly mowing output of up to 15,000 sqm. per hour.

The Bahia M2E is the world’s first fully electric ride-on cut and collect mower. Featuring all of the benefits of its petrol ‘brother’ which has made the Bahia a user favourite, with the added advantages of no odour, zero emissions, low noise, low vibrations, reduced maintenance costs and reduced health and safety issues for operators. This model has been developed around the chassis of the petrol-powered Bahia models and effectively has the same compact look with a cutting width of 80cm and grass box capacity of 240 litres.

Power comes from 4 acid/lead batteries producing 48V, 115 ah and conveniently located under the operator’s seat which can be re-charged within six hours via a 16amp 200v power socket.

Also on show will be the complete range of batterypowered pedestrian mowers from the N-Ergy range. With mowers from 41cm-46cm cutting widths, push and single

speed available, there is a mower suitable for everyone.

The exclusive Duocut cutting deck on the N-Ergy range is the perfect combination of 100 % collection and 100 % mulching decks. A very high collection performance thanks to the smooth inside of the deck. A full opening of the exit of the ejection channel which is favourable to the removal of grass cuttings without clogging in a 50-litre box – even in extreme weather conditions. Completing the Greener City Equipment range on show is the revolutionary Donky 100% electric wheel barrow, which is available with a range of attachments to tackle a wide variety of jobs.

Visitors to stand C050 will also get the opportunity to see the new Bahia Hydro 80 MKHP4 E-Connect ride-on mower before it’s official launch in 2018.

Ventrac and Ryan on display with Price Turfcare

Tournament experience will prove important in Enville’s development

Enville Golf Club, near Stourbridge, was founded in 1935 and has a history of hosting qualifying tournaments and amateur championships. The course is maintained by a team of 15 greenkeepers under the supervision of Andy Wood, the Course Manager who joined the club in June, as Laurence Gale discovers.

Prior to joining Enville Golf Club Andy Wood spent seven years as course manager for the Robin Hood Golf Club in Birmingham, where he transformed the course during his time there.

The opportunity to manage a 36-hole site, widely regarded as one of the best in the Midlands, proved a strong draw for Andy.

He believes Enville has the potential to get into the top 100 golf courses of the country and has already started working to reach that goal.

Q: What golfing experience and education have you achieved to date?

A: I started studying HND in turf science and golf course management in 1995 with a

work placement at the Belfry growing in the PGA National. On completion of my studies I returned to The Belfry spending six years mainly as Deputy Course Manager preparing the venue for the Ryder Cup & many major European Tour events. This was followed by seven-anda-half years as Course Manager at Cosby Golf Club before moving to Robin Hood for just over seven years.

Q: What where your first impressions of Enville ?

A: It is a diverse site with its heathland areas and very much woodland and parkland appearance in sections. Enville is a stunning piece of golfing landscape and a golf club with huge amounts of potential.

Q: What skills and experiences do you bring to Enville ?

A: I have varied experience from both corporate and private members golf clubs. I also have tournament experience from Ryder Cup, European Tour Events to the recent televised

TP tour events at Robin Hood getting the best out of the sites I have worked at.

In the seven years I spent at Robin Hood, we managed to transform the golf course in terms of improving the quality of the playing surfaces and appearance of the course. That entailed some remodelling of greens and a major green

drainage program in my first few months. Future work included tees, green surround and bunkers design and construction.

Q: What ideas and plans do you have for this club?

A: Firstly it was about getting full grass coverage back on the putting surfaces on both courses from a bad winter of fusarium outbreaks air and light issues.

This was done with a programme of aeration, topdressing, plugging, reseeding and some pruning work.

We solid tined the greens monthly and have applied over 200 tonnes of straight sand on both courses since the end of March and overseeded with a blend of Limagrain fescue/bent seed cultivars.

The next stage was to work on improving the performance of the greens with a robust maintenance regime that included regular mowing, verticutting, rolling, microtining, top dressing and feeding.

Our attention soon turned to other areas of the golf course in preparation for the Girls British Open Amateur Championships. This involved improving green surrounds and tees reseeding any bare areas with a blend of Limagrain’s fescue/bent seed cultivars followed by using germination sheets to get faster establishment and to protect these areas from play.

This winter will be a continuation of developing the playing surfaces further with plenty of aeration planned both it the way of solid tine work and hollow tine work at various depths.

Heather restoration, tree removal, general clearing and tidying of areas

We are also currently looking at replacing our very old irrigation system and have engaged a consultant - Roger Davey, of Irritech - to undertake a survey, design and specification of works before putting it out to tender, with the aim of replacing the current system during the winter of 2018.

The benefits of having a modern and efficient irrigation system are huge and it will allow me to have greater control over the work I can achieve on the key playing

surfaces, in terms of when I can apply feeds, herbicides and wetting agents along with any cultural maintenance regimes such as aeration, topdressing and verticutting.

The key for me is getting the foundations right at Enville so we that can progress further and quickly, the aeration program and irrigation system are key to this but coinciding with this work we are also going to revamp the maintenance facilities to make them more efficient and we have just places an order with Bernhard Grinders so that our cutting equipment will be at its best throughout the year.

Q: Will you also look to improve resources at the club?

A: Like most Course Managers we always want more, it is really a case of justifying the needs and proving the benefits of the investment in people and resources.

We have a total of 15 staff including my Deputy Course Manager Rob Jones, a mechanic and a recently appointed Apprentice Greenkeeper. The team has been fantastic since my arrival and have made my life so much easier.

Q: How did the recent British Girls Open Amateur Championship go?

A: I was extremely pleased with the outcome. The team was exceptional, putting in 12-16 hour shifts to prepare the course weeks in advance. During the event, we started at 5am to get ahead of play, carrying out a full course set up. At the close of play we would be back out on the course again repeating the work again in preparation for the next day usually finishing at around 9pm.

Also while the Lodge course was closed for the week we used the time while the tournament was on to hollow tine all the greens, solid tining the tees and green surrounds.

The first four months have for been a challenge but an exciting one and with the hard work from the team and the investment from the club Enville Golf Club will hopefully continue to go from strength to strength, hopefully in reaching full membership soon and in time meeting its potential of being a top 100 course.

Golf club opens a unique course

Frilford Heath Golf Club in Abingdon has officially open its long-awaited new Yellow Course.

The Yellow Course sits alongside Frilford Heath’s three existing championship courses. But what sets it apart is that it has been created using Huxley Golf allweather surfaces.

The course is divided into two accessible loops of three holes each; with the second loop slightly more challenging than the first.

It is designed to cater for all standards of golfer, but it will especially appeal to beginners who want an accessible and gentle introduction to the sport, experienced players who want to improve their short game within 100 yards, and the rapidly expanding group of golfers that find it hard to find time to play regularly.

Huxley Golf’s Will Alsop worked with Executive Chairman Alistair Booth and Head Greenkeeper and President of BIGGA, Sid Arrowsmith, to

design and create the course.

At the opening, Will said: “We were thrilled to be approached by Sid to discuss creating this new course at Frilford Heath.

“Accessible, versatile - and hugely addictive! – these short courses give experienced players the opportunity to fit golf into their busy lifestyles as well as encouraging inclusivity by offering juniors and novices a fantastic foundation on which to build their skills.”

Alistair Booth added: “Huxley Golf worked with us over a period of 18 months to turn an under-utilised area of woodland into this stunning new feature. In my opinion, the team skilfully created an exceptionally high quality facility that can be used by young and old, novice and professional, and I am proud to have extended our offering in this way.

“It is testimony to its broad appeal that today’s event has been so well attended and I’m sure that it will continue to attract the wider community to experience what Frilford Heath has to offer.”

The Yellow Course’s six greens all measure 1350 sq. ft (125 sq. mtrs) but all are unique in shape and undulations. There are 12 Huxley Golf Premier Nylon Tee Mats, two for each hole, creating a variety of approach shots from differing angles and length with increasing difficulty.

The light, bright course meanders its way through avenues of trees with bird boxes to encourage wildlife and natural grass fairways and approaches.

Joining tour professional Eddie Pepperell to play at the launch were a keen five year old and

centurion Hugh Chamberlain, demonstrating the versatility and wide appeal of the new facility. Eddie is well known for his active contribution to encouraging junior golf in the area, supporting the establishment of the Frilford Heath Junior Academy in 2016 and coaching at local schools.

The PGA accredited Huxley Golf provides premier all-weather surfaces for golf around the world for individuals, training and coaching establishments, golf resorts, ranges and academies as well as many top-flight courses.

Redexim kit helps Ipswich Town protect new synthetic pitch

Following a £700,000 investment in brand new synthetic pitch facilities for their training ground

Ben Connell, Grounds Manager at Ipswich Town Football Club, is determined to maximise its working lifespan.

Within the spend was an amount to cover synthetic maintenance machinery that fulfilled the care instructions provided by the installers. Meeting that remit, and so far keeping the pitches in a first-rate condition, is a Redexim Verti-Comb and Verti-Top 1800 from Charterhouse Turf Machinery.

The training centre, covering 7½ hectares of natural and

synthetic pitches, has a hectic schedule hosting teams from Under 6’s, right through to first-team training.

“When our previous carpet had come to the end of its working life, I was determined to be best equipped to look after the new one” explains Ben who heads-up a team of 9 groundstaff.

“By purchasing our own maintenance equipment, we’re not having to rely on contractors – meaning we can conduct operations as and when we need to, not when the time or budget allowed. We had a look at a number of options but settled

on the Redexim Verti-Comb and Verti-Top machines - we’re familiar with Redexim products, having had a Verti-Drain for a number of years.

“We know the machines are well built and good at what they do, and they’re always backed up with brilliant support and service.”

The kit was delivered in September 2016 and installed by Curtis Allen of Charterhouse and Adrian Brown of local dealer Tomlinsons.

Ben is in a fortunate position of being able to restrict the usage of the synthetic pitches to 25 hours of play per week. This

falls in line with the installers recommendations to use the VertiComb after every 10 hours of play, equating to roughly two passes a week. This helps to maintain the distribution of the rubber crumb.

The Verti-Top is then utilised approximately every 10 weeks to keep the surface free from debris and contamination, alleviating any compaction and keeping the surface free-draining. This maintenance regime is keeping the fibres upright and the crumb decompacted and is key to helping it look and play well.

a solution to even the toughest conditions including mowing, scarifying, weed clearing, blowing and snow clearing.

It also boasts a range of attachments specifically for synthetic groundscare, including various sweepers and brushes.

Unlike other synthetic turf care products, the Compact Easy’s clever design means instead of having to purchase a number of machines for different tasks, you simply buy the attachments to fit the base unit, avoiding the expense of different standalone units.

SISIS Osca works wonders for the Potters

Andy Jackson, grounds manager at Stoke City FC, has reported phenomenal results since incorporating the SISIS Osca tractor mounted oscillating brush into his synthetic surface maintenance programme.

Clayton Wood boasts a multitude of state of the art facilities including two and a half Desso Grassmaster pitches, five soil based pitches and two full size synthetic surfaces.

“Getting the right equipment for all the different textured pitches we have here is big task, and it’s key to how we go about our business,” says Andy.

“The use on our synthetic pitches has become incredibly high so

I needed to look at something which would combat that. I wanted a machine that was going to be effective and quick but to get a machine to do those two things I felt would be a hard task.”

The SISIS Osca is a tractor mounted powered oscillating brush with a 1.9 meter working width and is equally effective when used on synthetic turf with sand or rubber infill.

The two oscillating brushes stand the carpet fibres up and redistributes the infill evenly, minimising compaction on the surface and improving its performance – giving consistent playing characteristics while preventing pile damage caused by reduced infill levels.

A contributory factor to the reduction of compaction is that the Osca’s working width will use fewer passes than other more conventional drag brushes to complete a pitch.

Its aggressive brushing action agitates the upper infi ll level of the surface from side to side as well as brushing forward, helping reduce surface compaction and encourage the fi bres to stand up straight which reduces the risk of contamination, drainage problems and leaves a consistent playing surface across the whole pitch.

Andy sets an hour aside each day to use the Osca and designates a fortnightly three hour time slot to carry out a more intensive clean. Since using the Osca he has noticed a significant improvement and he is not the only one.

“The Osca has brought our synthetic pitch to a new level and the feedback we’ve had from the staff, the coaches and the players has been really positive,” he added.

“The results have been phenomenal and personally I think the Osca ticks all the boxes in getting synthetic turf to a level where it needs to be.”

Quick Clean for Moody Grounds Maintenance

Moody Grounds Maintenance is a leading contractor in Hertfordshire and North London.

A team of fully trained groundsmen, they maintain school grounds, commercial grounds, private stately homes and sports grounds for all types of sport.

One such contract is with Winchmore Hill Sports Club, a bastion of the community for over 130 years. A requirement of Moody by the club is the maintenance of their rubber crumb 3G football pitch and they needed a machine to do the job.

“We had heard the GKB Quick Clean 150 was good,” says Andrew Moody, “so we arranged with Tom Shinkins at GKB and Ernest Doe’s at Bennington for a demonstration of the Quick Clean at Winchmore Hill.”

Quick Clean is a three-point CAT I/II PTO operated machine for quick and thorough cleaning of artifi cial turf, sweeping up leaves, branches and dirt in a single pass. It uses a depth adaptable brush and shaking screen system to deposit dirt into a waste bin.

The screens are interchangeable to allow filtering of different grain sizes such as sand, rubber, cork and TPE.

Replay adds five years’ life to artificial surfaces

The artificial MUGA at Chipping & District Memorial Hall was beginning to show signs of wear and tear, so synthetic specialists Replay Maintenance was called in to bring the surface back to an ‘as new’ condition.

Considered the hub of the community, the Hall offers a range of indoor and outdoor services to local residents and groups using the MUGA in addition to 2 full size football pitches, a skatepark and a children’s play area.

In 2006, a sand-based artificial pitch was installed thanks to local fundraising and a lotteryfunded grant. “Though the village only has around 600 residents” explains Memorial Hall Treasurer, Simon Hore, “our sports facilities are in use most days.

“The artificial pitch is used five out of seven evenings a week and additionally at weekends by the locals, as well as a large local football club of around 200 children. Though it may

not get the battering that some pitches may get, over the course of a week there are hundreds of pairs of muddy boots running about on it.”

Although the carpet is swept from time to time, in its 11 years of play no real maintenance had taken place meaning a deep clean and some external help was required. “We decided to go for the full Rejuvenation process which I was very impressed with.”

Replay’s unique Rejuvenation process uses constant airflow plenum technology and compressed air to remove the

contaminated top layer of sand; restore the pile to vertical and fill again with new clean infill.

“The work took Replay around a week in July, they also then came back to mark the pitch up for football, 5-a-side and netball when the weather permitted. The process was smooth and the results are clear to see. On the back of this, we have decided to take out a service agreement with Replay which will see them coming in quarterly to keep the surface at its best. This work all-in-all has added at least another five years to the lifespan of our facility.”

The Altonwood Group Upgrades with E-Z-GO

The Altonwood Group, which owns and operates five golf courses across Surrey and Kent, has purchased a fleet of 60 E-Z-GO RXV golf cars to replace its existing fleet. Local dealer Ernest Doe & Sons Ltd. made the delivery.

Managing Director of the Altonwood Group Simon Hodsdon, said: “We have been extremely happy with E-Z-GO over the years; we chose to purchase another fleet because the reliability and length of charge is unrivalled by anything else we have tried. We need the golf cars to go out on the course twice a day on one charge, and they easily manage to do this.

“It’s a huge benefit to the golf courses that we run; the E-Z-GO vehicles are hands down the best on the market. The service we have received from our dealer Ernest Doe & Sons has been fantastic. We have utmost confidence in the support they provide us with, and the whole purchasing process has been efficient and simple.”

An improvement in the condition and appearance of the turf within the gardens of the 3000-acre

estate is already evident. From Easter to September, the 65-acre gardens are open to the public and with footfall increasing so too are the horticultural standards.

Jim Handley, head gardener, explains: “This is our first Toro mower, chosen simply because out of all the machines we

looked at, the Groundsmaster 4300-D was the most suited. Its performance and comfort was unsurpassed and the ease of height adjustment and back up service presented was very good and sealed the deal.”

A rotary mower is favoured for its ability to tackle longer,

thicker grass and terrain with contours and undulations with ease.

The GM4300-D is, says Reesink Turfcare’s Stewart Jeffs, incredibly productive with a mowing capacity of 5.4 acres an hour, but its lightweight design means less compaction. This is an especially important consideration for clay soil which is prone to compact.

Jim who has been working at the castle for five years and has a team of four gardeners and groundsman, says the job of raising the standard of the gardens has been made easier since the arrival of the Toro GM4300-D.

Makita introduces new 55.7cc chainsaw

The new Makita EA5600F45DN bristles with new improved features.

Powered by the advanced 2-stroke 55.7cc engine, which delivers a high-torque 4.1horsepower, includes the Stratified Air Scavenging (SAS) exhaust system where the SAS system directs unburnt combustion charge back to the induction port. This effectively reduces fuel consumption and ensures that exhaust emissions meet the highest possible standards.

It is fitted with a centrifugal air cleaner and HD air filter for the cleanest possible charge. The cord pull recoil starter has spring assistance, and the machine includes a primer pump and an anti-icing port for cold weather operations which keeps the fuel line flowing freely. A new wider touch and stop engine control switch allows easier operation when working with gloved hands.

The new Makita EA5600F45DN is fitted with a 45cm chain bar which carries the 0.058”gauge, and 0.325”pitch chain, and has an adjustable flow chain oil system with 0.32L capacity. This new chainsaw weighs just 5.8kg and is a particularly well balanced machine with large diameter forward grip bar, and a rear grip handle separated from the engine and transmission which reduces vibration transferred to the operator.

Timberwolf are extending their low emission petrol product family, developing further their comprehensive range of professional wood chippers.

Impending changes to engine legislation will affect many machines regularly used by arborists, landscapers, and estate managers, including chippers,.

An ongoing legislation programme to limit emissions from diesel engines, is progressing with the next step coming into force on 1st January 2019.

Current diesel engines can continue to be used after this date to power existing equipment, but only Stage V diesel, or alternative fuelled engines, can be supplied on new machines.

TYM expands sales team with appointment for the North

Reesink Turfcare has appointed John Addy to its TYM Tractors team as northern regional sales manager.

This appointment is, says Steve Haynes, TYM sales manager, part of a strategy to accelerate growth of the TYM business in the UK. John has vast sales experience in the sector, having worked at dealer level for some time, not only in the groundscare market, but also working with construction equipment sales.

Steven says: “John has experience in all the key areas important for this role, he has a good understanding of the tractor market and a proven track record for sales having worked within

the dealer network for some time. It’s this knowledge of working with dealers that makes John ideal for the role and our plans to grow the TYM dealer network and further strengthen and support the relationships that already exist.”

This year has seen the TYM brand grow exponentially with the appointment of John, the introduction of a range of rear mounted tractor attachments including finishing mowers, flail mowers, wide area mowers and rotary tillers, and the soon-to-be launched new mid-duty model, the T393.

Concluding the news from the brand is that Scott Turner,

who had previously held the position of TYM product specialist takes responsibility for sales in the south.
