Firms need to embrace digital transformation

In a recent report from NBS mapping the use of digital technologies across the industry, 70% agreed that those who do not adopt digital ways of working risk going out of business.

Over 500 people responded to the first Construction Technology Report from the Newcastle-based technology business.

Having mapped the adoption of BIM in the UK over the last decade, NBS wanted to run a parallel survey to provide a wider perspective of digital transformation.

“Digital construction technology will finally become an enabler for daily urban life worldwide, in combination with growth in offsite construction and 3D printing,” said NBS CEO Richard Waterhouse.

“When developing, coordinating and sharing the information that is needed on any project, there isn’t a single technology solution that does everything. You cannot buy ‘BIM in a Box’ and this report shows the breadth of tools our industry is using to strengthen their position and further digitise their processes.”

Digital tools in use across the industry include: cloud computing, AR, VR and mixed reality technologies, drones are becoming more commonplace and many companies are advising that they’re already solving complex problems with machine learning and AI.

Many are designing for offsite construction, with 41% doing so now, and a third saying that they will be within the next five years.

The report shows that the potential is there for smart sensors, the internet of things, material science development and robotics to vastly change construction sites and design offices.

Richard continued: “Digital transformation is not simply the adoption of a set of technologies.

“As we have seen over the last nine years with the continued rise in the adoption of BIM, digital transformation is about creating a culture of cooperation and innovation, supported by the use of digital tools.”

With 90% of respondents agreeing that digitisation will transform how they work, particularly in changing how they communicate with clients and how collaboration takes place, it’s no surprise that almost three quarters agree that those who don’t adopt digital ways of working will go out of business.

Hunter Douglas develops a custom-made

ceiling

A technically complex custom-designed leaf canopy, made possible thanks to the engineering prowess of Hunter Douglas Architectural, is one of the highlights of the new Dutch Charity Lottery Office.

The canopy at the BREEAM Outstanding building in Amsterdam saw Hunter Douglas Architectural design and produce a flat ceiling, using 3,500m2 of roof panels and ensuring both the inside and outside panels had the same dimensions.

The panels comprise four square tiles of 650mm x 650mm, which are fixed to an aluminium profile, made by Prometal, and the sets of four leaves are fixed to the ceiling with 58 different types of mounts to form one complex puzzle.

Saint-Gobain PAM UK, leading iron solutions manufacturer has launched new rodding branches for its BS EN877 Ensign above ground drainage system. After working alongside installers, Saint-Gobain PAM identified an opportunity to significantly reduce installation time when installing horizontal pipework. This was particularly apparent in multi-storey developments with basement levels where the drainage systems can have many directional changes and multiple connections to vertical pipe stacks. Typically, this type of application would require several components to be assembled together; now with the new 100mm Ensign rodding branches available in 90° and 45°, the installation time of each directional change is reduced by at least 50%.

Fire safety start-up company Lite4Life has adopted Aico’s unique Ei414 Fire / Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarm Interface into its Multiwatch tower block fire safety system and AlightforLife Directional Way Finder Safety Light. The Ei414 is being used to alert these systems in the event of an activation from Aico Fire and CO Alarms. In the case of AlightforLife it activates LEDS pointing to the nearest exit.

Levolux achieves gold at Birmingham University

The new Collaborative Teaching Laboratory (CTL) at Birmingham University’s Edgbaston campus, is turning heads thanks to its dazzling gold-coloured solar shading solution from Levolux. Levolux was invited to design, manufacture and install brise soleil for the building’s south and east-facing elevations. The custom solution comprises a collection of angled, aluminium fins that extend across ground and first floor levels, surrounding the main entrance. Each fin is 125mm thick and has a rectangularshaped profile. A 200mm wide fin is used at ground floor level and where the fins return along east and west-facing sections. In contrast, a larger 600mm wide fin has been used on the southfacing elevation at first floor level.

As part of Network Rails £6bn Thameslink Programme the redevelopment of London Bridge Station started in 2013. With new paving installed, it was anticipated by Network Rail and main contractors Lorclon Ltd, that cleaning regimes would serve to remove the jointing sand leading to destabilisation of the paving and causing hazards such as tripping accidents. The success of Resiblock Resiecco at The 02 Arena and Sir Matt Busby Way at Manchester United Football Club, where similar problems associated with the paving where major concerns, played a key role in the selection process of the sealer. Resiblock Technicians attended and advised on application and spread rate of Resiblock Resiecco and the one coat application allowed the station to remain open during installation.

British manufacturer celebrates centenary

Amtico chosen for Tenpin’s refurbishment

When Tenpin decided to reconfigure the layout of its leisure complex in Hounslow and embark on a complete refurbishment, it was in need of practical flooring that could cope with a high level of footfall, and Amtico proved to be the perfect choice. The Amtico Signature collection was used in the approach to the bowling lanes to direct the player to the game, while also making the bowlers’ lanes distinct from one another. The design agency, Dover Design, achieved this by devising their own bespoke laying pattern, utilising Amtico’s precision cutting capabilities to create triangle-shaped LVT tiles. Amtico Carpet tiles were used throughout the rest of the facility, as they are hard wearing, easy to replace and allowed the design team to create specific zones. They also helped create the illusion of pathways through the layout, guiding visitors to different zones.

The trade association Interpave will be celebrating the work of sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) designers Robert Bray Associates on the British Precast stand G44 at Futurebuild, London Excel, from 5th – 7th March. The 2018 winner of the ‘British Precast Creativity in Concrete Award’, Robert Bray Associates (RBA) has been at the forefront of SuDS for over 20 years. RBA has realised the potential of concrete block permeable paving for SuDS and continues to explore new developments with this key, multi-functional SuDS technique. A Girlguiding activity centre in Cheshire had Hunter Douglas Architectural’s innovative felt ceiling installed in the second development phase after the architect was so impressed with its performance in the first building.

John Piercy Holroyd, Associate Director of Walker Simpson Architects, had specified Heartfelt® in the first building at Pettypool, which was commissioned by Girlguiding Cheshire Forest. When the second phase was under construction, Heartfelt® was specified again for the common areas of the bedroom block, instead of gypsum plank, which had been originally earmarked,

because of its superior acoustic performance and aesthetic qualities.

“It helped us to transform the idea of what is basically a circulation space to somewhere that feels quite special. It raised the profile of how that area would feel,” said John.

The architect developed new graphics and colourways on the flooring to complement the 35m2 of Heartfelt ceiling in ‘Off-white’ (7595), ‘Light Grey’ (7596), ‘Middle Grey’ (7597), and also adapted the lighting system so that it better complemented the first phase.

A new urban district is being created in London’s Canary Wharf, which when complete will feature up to 3,600 new homes, a GP’s surgery, a two form primary school for 420 children, 490,000sq ft of retail space and eight acres of public spaces squares and parks. Chiller range expanded from Mitsubishi Electric

Mitsubishi Electric has expanded its chiller offering with two new additions to its Climaveneta portfolio. The new i-NX air-cooled chiller range is offered in both standard and low noise options, whilst the smaller i-BX air-cooled chiller range is available in both single and three phase variants, making both ranges ideal for a wide variety of comfort and process cooling applications.

The new models improve on Climaveneta’s traditional chiller design by employing inverter driven compressors which ensures maximum efficiency at partial loads. Very few chillers are likely to operate at maximum capacity for more than a few hours a year, so efficiency at partial loads is a major factor in overall efficiency levels.

The i-BX range offers capacities from 4kW to 35kW to deliver flexible and reliable units that adapt to the most diverse load conditions, whilst offering accurate temperature control and high levels of energy efficiency both at full

and partial loads. All of the hydraulic components for installation are also already included within the outdoor unit reducing added cost.

For larger applications, the new i-NX delivers capacities from 43kW to 129kW to offer exceptionally high levels of energy efficiency whether at partial or full load. These models incorporate a fixed speed scroll compressor and a scroll inverter compressor working together in the same circuit, to offer much greater levels of efficiency than traditional fixed speed compressors systems.

The i-NX low noise version delivers a reduction of up to 7dBA over the standard models, increasing the flexibility of where systems can be installed, which is becoming a major factor in today’s congested urban environments.

“Since our acquisition of Climaveneta, we have combined our market leading

product development with their expertise and knowledge of the sector to deliver increasingly energy efficient and diverse solutions to the chiller market,” said Richard Venga, Senior Product Manager at Mitsubishi Electric.

Saniflo’s best-selling product of 2018 was the Sanivite + grey water waste pump. Given that the company is best known for inventing the macerator – and has subsequently become the generic name for that product - it is perhaps surprising that the Sanivite+ outsells every other product in the range.

Plumbers and installers, however, understand the reason for its popularity. Useful in a wide variety of situations the main function of the Sanivite + is to remove waste water from a sink in a domestic kitchen. With the trend of a central island in the kitchen it is often the case that gravity drainage won’t be near enough to take the waste. In this

case the Sanivite + can be installed under a sink and out of sight behind a cupboard door. Water is pumped out via 32mm discharge pipe up to 6m vertically or 60m horizontally. With four inlets it can be connected to multiple appliances and can handle hot soapy water up to 60°C. It is powered by a quiet but powerful pump.

The Sanivite + can be used to transform redundant spaces into working areas without the need for costly civils work. Whether it’s an additional kitchen, a utility room, laundry room and even for use with a wine fridge or icemaker the small, yet productive unit is certainly making its mark.

Following the tragic events of the Grenfell disaster in 2017, a greater understanding began to emerge regarding the lack of a holistic approach to fire safety and the evident shortcomings of custom and practice.
