Aurubis
Lunar Copper
At the heart of the Moon’ children’s art centre in Mechelen, Belgium, is a new theatre complex – a golden cube defined by creased Nordic Royal copper alloy cladding. The architects worked with specialist fabricators Ridder, resulting in a series of gentle creases – almost, but not quite, 3-D. Then, seven different designs of panels were produced using press moulds, each with folds running across at various angles and intensities. By rotating and intermingling different panels a rich, random effect was created. The verticality of the overlapping panels is retained, giving structure to the facades, but most transverse joints are not horizontal, further fragmenting the surface. Nordic Royal is produced by Aurubis, part of the world’s leading integrated copper group and largest copper recycler

Rinnai Phex Solo success showcase of continuous flow water heating for domestic and commercial installations
Rinnai scored a big success at PHEX 2016 with its Solo recirculator water heating range, an industry-leading A class commercial and domestic hot water heating unit suited to all domestic and commercial sites and installations.
The Rinnai Infinity Solo condensing and low NOX water heater is the first of its kind to combine the advanced technology of wall mounted continuous flow water heaters with a stainless steel storage cylinder, all in one compact footprint.
“Rinnai innovation and advanced technology is now a known alternative to traditional technologies. The show established that the Rinnai brand is now synonymous with the values of quality and cost effectiveness, it was incredibly satisfying to speak to so many installers and users who have become brand fans” says Rinnai’s Chris Goggin.
The design parameters of the Solo empowers specifiers, designers, installers and engineers to benefit from unique Rinnai technology in applications where it was not previously possible. For example, the Infinity Solo with both 35kW and
54kW sized appliances, ensures sites with a smaller gas meter can readily use this technology. The larger Infinity Solo model will also act as a high-efficiency alternative to gas fired storage appliances that exist in today’s market.
The cylinder is stainless steel and this reduces the weight compared to glass lined models, and makes transportation and installation a lot easier. As well as the difference in weight, the cylinders also have extremely low heat loss figures (as low as 1.41kW/h day), so the user pays less to maintain the heat within the tank.
One other benefit of the Infinity Solo using a stainless steel cylinder is that the life expectancy of the material is far greater than that of a glass-lined equivalent as glass suffers from thermal shock causing it to crack after a period of time.
The Infinity Solo range is also renewables compatible and supplied pre-fitted with a coil, meaning that the primary energy source will always be from renewable gains and the complementary Rinnai water heater will only apply the precise amount of gas to boost the difference in temperature.
Rinnai manufactures the energy efficient Infinity range of gas fired continuous flow water heaters and space heaters. The Infinity brand carries the widest range of condensing water heaters on the market today with the most impressive efficiencies in operation, leading the field in technological innovation.
The company’s technically advanced condensing hot water heating units are precision engineered to provide simple, effective solutions for all types of commercial applications from caravan parks, restaurants and laundries to factories and office buildings as well as social and domestic housing projects. The units are renewable-ready (suitable for use as a temperature booster for solar thermal and heat-pump).
Rinnai also offers a complete design and selection survey to assist with any domestic or commercial project.
Rinnai personnel reported that throughout PHEX 2016 the Infinity Solo had the most enquiries of all products on the stand.

Bilco information forms part of National BIM Library
Bilco UK is helping the UK construction industry to embrace the use of BIM by making its product BIM information available via RIBA’s NBS National BIM library. .
“Specifying access products has lagged behind some other areas of product specification as architects have had less experience in specifying these vital products,” says James Fisher, Managing Director of Bilco UK. “With the advent of BIM and this new resource, we are certain that architects will rapidly gain expertise at specifying access products at the design stage, designing in accessibility with safety at the earliest stages, benefitting not only the construction industry but also millions of future users of new buildings.”
This latest initiative from Bilco follows its recent strides to increase safety in the industry through the increase in knowledge and expertise in the specification of access products. New builds remain attractive and demand is high for modern touches
Almost 70% of people would like new build properties to be better equipped for modern living, with people citing a desire for more storage, renewable energy, and pre-wired TV and broadband.
Buying a new build remains attractive – more than half of people would opt for a new build because it allows them to have input on the style and design of the interior. These figures come from a nationwide survey, commissioned by Sky to explore consumer expectations of new build property against a backdrop of changing media consumption and rapidly advancing technology.
Broadband and TV services ranked in the top five essential services, just behind more traditional utilities such as electricity, water, and gas with 55% of people expecting to have TV services in place either before they move in or within 48 hours. At the bottom of the table, 18% of people considered a security system essential and just 8% couldn’t live without supermarket deliveries.
Chris Collinson, Sky’s Sales and Marketing Director, comments: “Sky is committed to delivering solutions for property developers and their clients. The demands of modern living mean that people have less time to wait for services to be installed and being connected has become essential to people’s lives. Expectations are rising, with people demanding more from their property. Sky Q offers state of the art wireless home entertainment and our walk in working solution meets the needs of homebuyers from day one – something that really sets a development apart.”
When talking about Walk in Working (WIW) services a staggering 93% of people said they would be attracted to a property that offered this. Not only do people find WIW appealing but over 70% of people (71.4%) of people find it stressful to take time off work to have services installed, clearly demonstrating that having WIW reduces stress for buyers and helps developers to sell property.

Looking to upgrade the interior design of its reception in Canary Warf, London, Skrill called on GTA Interiors and Clarke Rendall, to bring a creative approach and technical skills to their reception area.
Clarke Rendall suggested using Polyrey’s white compact laminate for the desk, as it allowed for the reception to have a clean finish.
The laminate company’s Monochrom is the perfect solution for demanding situations with high usage. Skrill were able to use this thick white core freestanding laminate reinforced to resist to all sort of impact and stain and antibacterial treatment to brighten the desk while also offering durability, especially during high traffic times of the day.
Along with the white core compact and HPL, Monochrom also comes in a deep black core to ensure sleek and luxurious designs in three different textures. Keiren O’Reilly of Clarke Rendall says: “Having used Polyrey a number of times in the past we advised gta and Skrill to use their products as we knew the compact laminate would achieve the look and durability they wanted.
“We tend to use Polyrey due to its durability and its versatility – the different environments where you can use compact and laminate materials are vast.”

Show of strength by Ryno on the national stage
Innovation will be the key to continued growth for Ryno as the ambitious company showcases its latest products on the Vision stage. The business provides intelligent solutions to architects, developers, contractors, tradesmen and the domestic market.
The RynoDeck and RynoPave ranges feature pedestals, cradles and support systems ideal for use wherever decking and paving is required. Quick to install and easy to adjust, the products have won praise for their versatility and have been designed to stand the test of time. The Ryno team will use the Vision London event at Olympia this week to unveil the latest additions to the ranges. Established as Britain’s key annual exhibition on the future of the built environment, it provides the ideal platform for the launches.
A unique aluminium decking subframe system, created to provide support which will never rot and which combines unparalleled durability with impressive strength, is one of two products making a debut at the exhibition on Tuesday and Wednesday (June 7-8).
Ryno’s paving support grate system is also being brought to the market at Vision. Manufactured using engineered polymers and utilising a hexagonal pattern for optimum strength, the individual grates can be used to form a subflooring grid which can support everything from luxury natural stone through to heavyweight paving.
Anton White, Ryno sales director, said: “Our business is built around three words: smart, strong, support. The new products are very different but both share those qualities and are already attracting considerable interest. There is a very experienced team behind Ryno, with more than a quarter of a century spent developing innovative products which have been used in projects large and small. We are determined to continue evolving and providing solutions to challenges we know exist in the construction sector. Ryno has gained traction very quickly in a competitive marketplace and we have exciting plans in the pipeline to ensure we continue to push forward and bring new ideas to the fore.”
Vision, attended by thousands of key industry figures, brings architects, designers, developers and contractors together with suppliers. For Ryno it represents an opportunity to demonstrate its product ranges and help broaden reach, with products already being used worldwide.
Anton White added: “The aluminium decking subframe is a great example of what is a very logical solution to a problem which has reared its head in domestic and commercial settings. Traditional timber subframes are naturally susceptible to decay and are difficult to preserve in the long term due to the problems with access. By using aluminium, that issue is avoided and our designs ensure strength is not compromised.”

Roofing, Cladding & Insulation
Wave of Green on Waitrose Roof
The new £14 million Waitrose superstore located in Bagshot, Surrey has been designed with the environment in mind; featuring a continuous sea of green vegetation on its large wave shaped roof that helps replace the green space lost to the building’s footprint and minimise its overall impact on the surrounding landscape.
The client wanted this new build development to serve as a benchmark for sustainability for the local area and this was achieved through the installation of over 4,800m2 of Bauder’s high quality, low maintenance sedum blanket, which is highly visible even at ground level. Prior to the project commencing plans were shared with the local community at public exhibitions to gather feedback, which was extremely positive and in full support of the development.
The new roof features Bauder’s premium root resistant bituminous waterproofing system, which includes a highly efficient 120mm FA-TE insulation to satisfy building regulations. The pre-cultivated 2x1 metre sedum blankets, which are grown and harvested in the UK, were craned into position on to the roof and then laid in a very similar way to turf by approved contractor Span Roofing to produce the striking wave of vegetation. An irrigation system was also installed to ensure the plants have sufficient levels of water to flourish throughout the year. The blanket features 11 species of sedums with some mosses and grasses to ensure plant diversity and providing various environmental benefits including; rainwater retention, noise absorption and the creation of new wildlife habitats.
The main challenge for this project resulted from the sheer size of the roof and the strict deadlines that were in place to ensure there was no delay to the opening of the store. To overcome this challenge, over 1,000m² of the lightweight, sedum blanket was installed each day providing instant coverage and greening of the building.
IKO plc wins UK Roofing Award for Westminster Cathedral
IKO plc has won the UK Roofing Award for Best Mastic Asphalt/Hot-Melt project for its work on Westminster Cathedral with Knight Asphalte.
The Cathedral is the Mother Church of the Catholic Church in England and Wales, the seat of the Archbishop of Westminster.
As a Grade 1 listed, high-profile iconic building, IKO’s and its partner contractors’ experience in working on historical buildings was carefully examined by St Ann’s Gate Architects. This was confirmed through IKO’s involvement with St Paul’s Cathedral and Canterbury Cathedral.
The Westminster project involved replacing 600-700sqft of the existing asphalt with IKO Permaphalt, a polymer modified mastic asphalt. A particular challenge was working around the historic roof’s spectacular slopes and numerous curves - originally built in the late 1800s in the Byzantine style.
“The Roofing Awards showcase some of the most intricate and challenging roofing projects from across the country; we are delighted to win - Westminster Cathedral is a fantastic example of what can be achieved,” comments Marcus Lee, Sales Director of IKO’s Specification Division.
IKO was also shortlisted for two other impressive projects in the Mastic Asphalt/ Hot Melt category: the British

Roof-Pro delivers roof access systems for hospital
Dow Building Solutions sets new standard in XPS roofing insulation
Dow has become the first company to attain a coveted Green Guide Rating A+ by BRE Global for its extruded polystyrene (XPS) roofing insulation product XENERGY™ SL.
This certification further supports the performance credentials of the Dow Building Solutions product, launched last year, making it the only XPS to achieve this internationally recognised certificate.
XENERGYTM SL is a flame-retarded, XPS roof insulation product, which achieves significantly improved lambda insulation performance delivering a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of less than five.
Roof-Pro has successfully completed a £22,000 bespoke roof access system project at the Royal Derby Hospital for an extension which houses an MRI scanner and associated equipment.
As well as being asked to provide easy and safe rooftop access to the MRI scanner’s rooftop-mounted chiller unit, which generally requires a service check at least once a quarter, Roof-Pro were also asked to design and build roof access systems for the whole new building.
The main elements of this multi-component project were: providing stable, nonpenetrating support for the chiller and Air Handling Units (AHUs); providing a waterproof method of bringing cables and pipes from the service units down into the building; and providing step-over access to the chiller support platform, enabling the units to be serviced and inspected by maintenance personnel.
The project involved a combination of standard and bespoke components designed and built by Roof-Pro, including: Chiller Support Platform; Roof Penetration; and Step-Overs.
To successfully deliver this unique project required high attention to detail. Roof-Pro worked closely with two key contractors: Mellor Bromley Mechanical Services, who delivered the chiller and AHUs; and Derwent Valley Construction, who were responsible for the fabric of the rooftop.
XENERGY™ SL is manufactured at Dow’s production facility in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, where a wind turbine is used to generate renewable energy for the company’s manufacturing processes. This has resulted in a 13 percent decrease in the site’s electricity bill and contributes to Dow’s commitment to meeting its sustainability goals by 2025.
Joan Ferrer, Technical Services at Dow Building Solutions, said: “This outstanding achievement shows the great performance of XENERGY ™, both by the material’s technical properties and by its cradle to grave life cycle when used in a building, making it the XPS insulation of choice”

Ubbink
Ubbink offering more to flat roof
ventilation
Ubbink Group have manufactured and supplied the UK market with flat roof vents and terminals for over thirty years. The range has grown in previous years with the introduction of terminals which have the ability to duct from 100mm to 180mm. Previously there has been some confusion for specifiers when trying to source the correct flat roof vent or terminal to suit their project. Therefore Ubbink Group have produced a wider range of flanges to help aid specifiers and installers fit ventilation with ease. Keith Plummer, Technical Manager of Ubbink UK for over 20 years commented “When flat roofs were either three layer felts or asphalt the type of flange material was set in stone. Now with single ply systems becoming more popular, Ubbink needed to be able to offer the specifier and contractor a more compatible solution. Which allows ventilation and termination to be installed more successfully into the wider range of flat roof coverings.”

Marley Eternit
Majority of specifiers risking their liability by reusing roofing specifications
The majority (57%) of specifiers admit reusing roofing specifications on new projects - putting their liability at risk and potentially falling foul of changes to new standards, according to research by Marley Eternit. What’s more, 56% of specifiers do not consider the quality of dry fix roofing products, despite there being significant differences in the performance of systems. Gavin White, product manager from Marley Eternit, comments: “Our findings show some misunderstandings including the assumption that all dry fix systems are the same quality. That’s why we’re continuing to demonstrate the differences in quality that exist with roofing systems to help specifiers protect their liability. One way they can do this is by choosing a high quality system like ours.”

Crown Trade
Crown
Trade paints complete environmental picture for specifiers with EPD
Crown Trade has reinforced its industry-leading sustainability credentials with the introduction of Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) across a range of its premium coatings.
Four Crown Trade products now hold verified EPD certificates, in compliance with the European Standard EN 15804. These include Crown Trade’s Fastflow system, which was introduced into the marketplace last year – and has already built a strong reputation in the specification sector for its ability to deliver all the benefits of an oil-based coating in a water-based formulation for interior and exterior projects.
The complete system, comprising of Crown Trade Fastflow Primer Undercoat and Crown Trade Fastflow Gloss, has been assessed. Crown Trade Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt - trusted by specifiers across high traffic areas, including healthcare, educational and housing environments - also has an EPD certificate.
Featuring a super scrubbable finish, which allows repetitive cleaning with the added benefit of excellent stain resistance, Crown Trade Clean Extreme also extends maintenance cycles by returning to an ‘as new’ condition after cleaning – reducing the need for costly redecoration.
Finally, another popular choice, Crown Trade Matt Vinyl, a premium quality flat matt emulsion for interior use on wall and ceiling surfaces, has a EPD certificate too.
Debbie Orr, Marketing Manager for trade brands at Crown Paints, said: “The EPDs are full lifecycle assessments of the environmental impacts of the products from raw materials and manufacturing, through use to end of life. They are carried out using the standardised method defined by EN 15804. Each EPD is independently verified to ensure that the data, data handling and resulting report are reliable, giving specifiers and architects confidence in their credibility. The EPDs are aligned with the environmental requirements of BREEAM and LEED and also meet the requirements of the SKA rating scheme, meaning these Crown Trade products can be confidently specified in projects where environmental considerations are key.”
The Crown Paints EPD certificates can be found online at GreenBookLive, a unique listing of environmental products and services.

Wetherby
DECC pays visit to Wetherby project
Representatives from the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), along with local MPs, local councils and energy companies have visited a site in Gosport, Hampshire to find out how ECO and Green Deal Communities funding has benefitted the local communities.
The £145m Rowner Renewal Project is a major regeneration scheme to replace and refurbish substandard housing with more than 600 new energy efficient homes. DECC recently visited the third phase of the project, which has seen 14 blocks of flats fitted with external wall insulation (EWI) from Wetherby, delivering warmer homes and reducing heating bills for 235 individual properties.
With no gas grid in the area, all homes are solely fed by electricity and with up to 40% of their heat being lost through the walls, some residents were paying up to £2,500 in electricity bills. The application of Wetherby’s EWI system incorporating 90mm EpsiTherm insulation by Wall Coatings Ltd, has helped residents see their annual fuel bills halved, while the fresh white silicone render finish has also transformed the exterior appearance of the properties to create an attractive street scene.
Commenting on the project, Darren James from Wall Coatings Ltd said: “There was no insulation on the buildings and the heating costs were astronomical; some of the residents were paying up to £2,500 in electric bills.
Paul Kirby, Sales Director from Wetherby added: “By visiting the scheme DECC has seen first hand the transformation of the Rowner community; not just that these homes are now warmer, more comfortable and considerably less expensive to heat, but that they are visually unrecognisable, making it an attractive place to live.
“We just hope that by conducting visits such as this, DECC will sit up and listen to the industry, which has been calling for the government to make improving energy efficiency in the UKs vulnerable homes a national infrastructure priority.”

Graf UK
Morpeth bypasses flood risk with EcoBloc Flex
In a bid to eliminate flood risk and to provide an effective, controlled rainwater drainage solution, water management specialist Graf UK has installed a 620m3 EcoBloc Flex stormwater tank at a 13-mile bypass in Morpeth, Northumberland. The project’s contractors were keen to find a robust stormwater tank with high volume capacity, whilst at the same time minimising costly excavation work. They also wanted a system that would be easy to inspect and straightforward to maintain to ensure optimum long-term performance. Pipework in the bypass’s gullies collects the rainwater from the road and feeds it into the single EcoBloc Flex attenuation tank. This then discharges the water into the culvert at a controlled, slow speed using a vortex flow controller – meeting Northumberland County Council’s requirement of 10 l/s.

Sudstech
Sudstech specified to re-open Magic Roundabout Subway
Langford Direct Ltd has recently worked with Hertfordshire County Council to re-open the subway of the well-known “Magic Roundabout” in Hemel Hempstead. Langford Direct’s Sudstech highly porous paving system has now been applied as a cost effective solution to drain any excess water from the footpath, whilst also creating an attractive and durable new surface. Also known as the Plough Roundabout, the roundabout has gathered a reputation due to its size and complexity as it consists of six mini-roundabouts covering a large area of the highway. This underpass has now recently been re-opened following resurfacing works to the using the Sudstech porous paving solution. The works comprised the application of the porous material to replace the existing deteriorated resin-bound gravel surfacing covering the entire subway and surrounding areas, which will prevent water build up and reduce the risk of a slippery or icy surface as a result of surface water. Hertfordshire County Council specified Sudstech to support the pump by draining all excess water through the landscaping material itself In having the porous material, all landscape maintenance costs are significantly reduced as the surface does not deteriorate from the effects of water or harsh weather conditions.
The Sudstech system, designed and developed by Langford Direct Ltd., offers a sustainable drainage solution that replicates the natural infiltration method of the water cycle that is highly efficient and maintenance free. With the ability to absorb up to 50,000 litres of water per square metre, per hour, Sudstech eliminates the need for additional drainage systems which are subject to frequent blockages and maintenance. Sudstech can be specified in a range of colours to provide an attractive paving solution that can be used to match any landscaping theme.

The wall is longer at the top than it is at the bottom, so Hunter Douglas modified its our grill system and supplied bespoke panels that were flexible and on which only one of the dowels was mechanically fixed to the wooden laths. The grill was created in Magma Firestop-treated American White Oak, which emphasised the light and airiness of the reception area.

Floating ceiling adorns the imposing Sir Ian Wood Building
Hunter Douglas has created an impressive 450m2 circular floating ceiling in the reception area at the Sir Ian Wood Building, part of the £120m Garthdee Campus at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen. The open linear ceiling in multi-width module American Red Oak provides a natural feel within an ultramodern building that is otherwise constructed from glass, hard masonry and cladding. Architects BDP of Glasgow asked Hunter Douglas to provide three widths – 63mm, 90mm and 117mm – to provide depth and visual interest. The linear system comprised a 15mm gap with an overall module of 105mm average and the gaps were infilled with 15mm acoustic fleece. The panels were finished on three sides with UV resistant varnish and were also treated with Magma fire treatment, ensuring that the ceiling achieved European fire class B-S2-D0 – the highest classification available for wood products.

Remmers
Flooring Challenge met by Remmers
The new 1,600m2 workshop facilities at The Trade Centre Wales in Neath, required a breathable anti-slip system to be installed due to the uncertain moisture levels of the relatively new substrate. The installers TPS360, measured the moisture levels during the installation and to facilitate the curing process, temporary heating and ventilation systems were used to reduce any moisture present. A FeRFA Type 3 high build floor coating system was then applied in two coats. Remmers BS3000 SG was selected as a high quality, damp tolerant resin, with a wide application spectrum and VOC free properties. ADD 250 Polymer Beads were then added to provide an anti-slip, textured finish to give a surface that remained easy to clean. The coating system was installed to a timed scheduled which tied in with other key equipment installation phases.

Dr. Schutz
Making longer lasting flooring
Dr. Schutz, the German floor care company, offers PU Sealer, an innovative solution that quickly and easily transforms tired, damaged or old floors, at a fraction of the time and cost of an entire floor replacement.
As well as renovating any floor with a fresh and lasting finish, PU Sealer offers added protection for flooring areas prone to high traffic, including sports halls, offices, hospitals, shopping centres and schools. Such areas with a heavily foot volume tend to wear very quickly when they don’t have a hard wearing product applied. Not only can this cost money, but it can be a time consuming issue to fix. By applying the PU-Sealer, flooring can be kept in a great condition for many years.
Due to the short drying time, there is a fast return to operational use. Unlike other floor refurbishment services, the process does not produce any noise or dirt. A standard renovation can be completed in a weekend, providing no disruption to the day to day running of the practice.
Lothar Schutz, Managing Director of Dr. Schutz comments, “PU Sealer can be applied quickly over a weekend, avoiding the need to close the doors for many commercial buildings. Refurbishing a floor using PU Sealer provides cost savings of up to 50 % in comparison to laying a brand new floor and will prolong the longevity of the floor for many years to come.”
The water based, eco-friendly PUSealer can be applied to most types of flooring, including vinyl, tiled and epoxy resin. Adding 40 microns of protective thickness to floors, PU Sealer extends the lifespan by up to six times and provides a lasting clear matt finish. Thanks to the permanent sealing, it protects against friction and discolouration from chemical spillages.
Thanks to the products special water-based substance, the PU Sealer also reduces dirt adhesion and the time needed for dayto-day maintenance.

Marmox
Commercial office conversion for Brighton campus
Close to a thousand square metres of Tektalan boards, manufactured by Heraklith and supplied by Marmox UK, have been consumed in the conversion of former American Express premises into a major new media centre for the University of Brighton. The panels were specified to improve the thermal and acoustic performance, as well as the appearance of several soffit areas within the buildings. These included the underside of two structural concrete floors and an entrance canopy. Within these spaces they help cut reverberation and present a smart, textured surface. Tektalan represents a hybrid combination of Marmox Heraklith Woodwool boards with rock mineral wool, which enhances the product’s already impressive performance characteristics. The woodwool element provides the strength and rigidity together with the unique appearance and sound absorption.

Bespoke louvres are a perfect match
There are plenty of brise soleil products on the market, but very few can be supplied in a colour which is tailor-made to match the design scheme of a building. A rare exception can now be found at Fulford School in York, where neaco provided a bespoke solution for a new classroom block as part of a £4 million upgrade designed by City of York Council and built by William Birch and Son.
neaco’s advanced powder coating facilities enable the company to apply precisely formulated colours to meet the specific aesthetic needs of its clients. They are often utilised in the manufacture of neaco’s balustrade products, but in this case they were put to good use for a specially developed sunshade louvre system specified at the school, which has just been named as one of Tatler
magazine’s top 10 state secondary schools in the UK. neaco also supplied internal balustrade in the building’s two stairwells.
Alan Thomas, Senior Architect at York City Council, said: “It was important to provide a design for the brise soleil that complemented the external appearance of the new building and this has been achieved. We supplied the specific RAL colour reference of the window frames and neaco were able to match the grey finish that has been used throughout the school. Initially Neaco provided a prototype and we held discussions with the main contractor, Wm Birch & Sons Ltd. to agree on the appropriate size and spacing for the louvre blades. The end result is excellent, being attractive, functional and robust.”
neaco’s range of aluminium grille systems offers a choice of profiles to suit a wide variety of other applications, including industrial flooring, decking, cladding, access walkways, ventilation and staging.
City Exchange chooses Avire’s flexible LCD lift displays for refurb project
point – the fact that we could program it.”
Lift safety and communication specialist Avire has installed its latest LCD multimedia display, the E-Motive iS2, at the City Exchange office building in Trinity Leeds.
“We were looking for a system that was easily installed and easy to use,” explained Dave Downes, technical services manager for City Exchange, “and that’s when we came across the iS2. It ticked all the right boxes.”
City Exchange’s lift service provider suggested the iS2 as a solution. As part of a general refurbishment programme, City Exchange had decided to upgrade the displays in the seven-storey building’s four lifts. Changing graphics or information on the existing displays had proved an extremely time-consuming and costly process, with an engineer call-out needed to make even the slightest alteration.
“We’re always letting and re-letting the floors,” continued Dave, “but now we can change logos and names ourselves. It’s very flexible, so we can basically do what we need to do. To me, that was the selling
The iS2 is the first lift display to combine RSS feed technology, wireless connectivity and eco-friendly features. The product’s screen brightness dimming, LED-backlit
technology and scheduler for screen power management all reduce LCD power consumption, improving lifespan and satisfying the green rating required by elevator OEMs.
E-Motive iS2’s ease of use also a winning factor

Stargard handrail system
Stargard the original “warm to the touch” handrail system with LED INSERT lighting has been fitted successfully to piers on the river Thames for London’s river taxi service.
The handrail is 4mm thick (4,000 microns) PVC sleeved over a galvanised steel core and was manufactured in a colour requested by the client. This system enables the individual lights to be screwed directly into the steel core and spaced at centres to suit the location. They can also be fitted into curved handrail if required. Stargard handrail resists knocks and bumps, will not chip, and the colour is consistent throughout the 4mm thickness of the PVC.

Mermet fabric coverings for walls and ceilings
PVC-U systems supplier The VEKA UK Group is marking its 30th year of manufacturing in the UK with a host of celebrations.
VEKA began manufacturing in Burnley in 1986, with just four extrusion lines. The company has now become the UK’s largest supplier of PVC-U window profile and of one of the local area’s biggest employers, with 34 extrusion lines and around 400 staff.
Last year alone, The VEKA UK Group extruded more than enough PVC-U profile to circle the globe.
MD Dave Jones has been with the company for 22 of its 30 years and said:“As a company, we understand that our value is entirely in the hands of our customers. If we’re not providing the perfect products for the market, we don’t deserve to succeed. That’s why we develop our PVC-U systems and services based on the valuable feedback our customers provide.
“After three decades of UK design and manufacture, we have absolutely no intention of slowing down. At this year’s FIT Show, we were proud to unveil a host of innovative, new systems and services that received extremely positive feedback and are already being adopted by fabricators up and down the country.”
Fire resistant to BS 476 Pt 6 Class 0, making them suitable for use in public areas, attractive and easy to maintain, Mermet fabrics are being widely used as coverings for both walls and ceilings across Europe.
Dimensionally stable, due to glass fibre cored yarn, this range of woven fabrics, originally developed as window shading materials, for use both internally and externally, were found to have many properties of benefit in the wider construction market. Easy to cut and fabricate from, taking sewing, welding and mechanical fixing well.
An inherent nature to lie or hang flat, without elongation or stretching over time, durable, waterproof, colourfast and safe in use (REACH & Greenguard compliant), the fabrics applications get wider and wider.
Available in a wide range of standard colours, the fabrics also take digital print exceptionally well, making them useful for signage, both walls and ceilings having benefited from such treatments.
Acoustic properties open up many further applications. Both the Screen Vision Sv10% and the Satine 5500 fabrics were found to be suitable for such use, to the extent that both have been used to ‘hide’ sound system speakers without degradation of the sound quality.

Gilgen Door Systems has launched a new energy-efficient automatic door which overcomes the limitations often associated with thermally insulated products, delivering a solution which is both elegant in appearance and efficient in operation. The Gilgen PST <green wings> sliding door comes with low-profile slimline looks and offers outstanding energy performance, expressed as ‘U’ values, enabling entrances to be built sustainably without compromising design. With system ‘U’ values of 1.1 to 1.8, depending on the configuration, Gilgen’s SLX-M drive and PST door profiles combine to form a single energy efficient unit. This combination provides a robust thermal barrier with a low visible profile similar to a standard automatic door. The design of these doors, with thermally separated profiles combined with double or triple glazing goes far beyond that of conventional sliding doors fulfilling the exacting demands of architects, specifiers and building owners.

Glazing Vision
Specifying Rooflights to meet the requirements of Part Q
Recent changes to Building Regulations Approved Document Q: Security in Dwellings means that anyone wishing to install rooflights in ‘easily accessible areas’ will need to ensure that they specify a product which is compliant with Part Q.
These changes are most likely to affect domestic dwellings with flat roof single storey extensions, although each project should be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
Glazing Vision’s Secure and Secure+ rooflights have been tested to LPS 2081:1 2015, which is designed to replicate a typical stealth attack commonly carried out in residential areas. The range is backed by the official police security initiative Secured by Design, and is accredited by the Loss Prevention Certification Board issued by the BRE.
Rooflights designated with the ‘Secure’ rating have been tested to LPS2081 security rating A, which identifies them as being able to withstand a sustained attack for up to one minute.
Any rooflight designated as ‘Secure+’ has passed the higher LPS2081 security rating B, identifying it as being able to withstand an attack of up to three minutes.
Compliant products include the fixed Flushglaze rooflight range, which includes solo, modular and wall abutted variants. The hinged ventilation rooflight ‘ VisionVent’ is also available in the ‘Secure’ range.

FDS Helps Former British Newspaper Library Make Headlines Again
Award-winning smoke ventilation contractor, Fire Design Solutions (FDS), has been appointed to work on a new residential development on the former British Newspaper Library site in North London.
Fairview New Homes is building its Edition development of 395 apartments on the site in Colindale in the London Borough of Barnet.
Edition will comprise a selection of one, two and three bedroom apartments. Brought onto the project by the Enfield-based developer, FDS has been appointed to design, supply, install and commission natural and mechanical smoke ventilation systems for the development.
FDS will also install its corridor environmental systems which will be used to mitigate excess heat build-up in the building’s common areas during day-to-day use, increasing residents’ comfort.
Working with the project’s designers, FDS carried out CFD modelling to justify the smoke ventilation system. The technique demonstrates the system’s effectiveness through the creation of a virtual model, which shows how fire and heat will move through the building.
Speaking on the project, Stephen Brown, Area Construction Manager for Fairview, said: “Having worked with FDS previously, we are confident the team will provide the most appropriate smoke ventilation solution to ensure the development meets all of the relevant building regulation requirements, as well as providing residents with a high performance system in the event of fire.”
Nick Waterfield, Managing Director at FDS, said “This is an exciting project to be working on, particularly as it’s on the former British Newspaper Library plot.
“For residential properties such as this, controlling temperatures in common areas is a major priority for the comfort of residents, and by including our corridor environmental system, occupants can rest assured this will be achieved.”
Construction started on site in spring 2015, with work expected to be complete by early 2018. For more information on Fire Design Solutions visit: http://www.firedesignsolutions.com/
ABUS Padlock triumphs over another determined burglar
We know that padlock security can’t always stop a burglar, but we do know that good security buys time, and the better the system the more time it will buy.
That is exactly what happened to at the Granary Barn, Worcestershire, where an ABUS 83WPIB/53 padlock withstood some serious leverage from a stillson type wrench.
The ABUS Submariner 83WPIB/53

Advanced’s Axis EN wins Polish award
Advanced’s Axis EN fire panel has won the ‘Devices and Fire Alarms Systems’ category of the Polish POLALARM Awards. The Axis EN is Advanced’s highest performance, EN54 approved panel range and is fully compliant with parts 2, 4 and 13. The result of decades of fire alarm and detection experience and research and development involving installers, specifiers, consultants and end users across the world, it is designed to offer more power and performance in a user-friendly enclosure. Then Axis EN packs more configuration, display, status and control options into its interface as standard than any other Advanced fire panel, which means less time and expense customising a system with peripherals.

Methven unveils next phase in Aurajet technology
Methven, the global designer and manufacturer of premium showers, has unveiled the next phase of its patented Aurajet technology shower range with the release of two new Aio products.
Featuring Methven’s patented Aurajet technology, the 220mm Aio Overhead Shower, which is almost 70% larger than the standard handset, brings the superior spray and unique ‘halo’ design into ultrawide coverage for all-over warmth and maximum body contact.
The other new addition is the dual head Aio Shower System, which comprises the fullyimmersive Aio Overhead Shower and the Aio Shower Handset, for a more directed and concentrated spray. The system comes with an integrated diverter to allow for easy switching between the two outlets.
Using an engineered polymer with hydrophobic properties and silicon rubber nozzles, Aurajet technology reduces hard water build-up and resists the accumulation of limescale. Aurajet also delivers up to 20% more total spray force and twice the amount of skin contact yet uses as little water as nine litres per minute, continuing Methven’s commitment to savings on water and energy bills for consumers.
