Welcome
The last few months have proved an interesting and challenging time for the construction products sector, with political and economic uncertainty continuing to have a major impact on the industry as a whole.
The fatal fire at Grenfell Tower and the subsequent criminal investigation, public inquiry and Government review of building regulations will also see significant challenges for the sector moving forward.
Against this backdrop, it was perhaps little wonder that the Construction Products Association’s latest State of Trade Survey revealed optimism was being severely tempered by higher input costs and this continuing uncertainty.
Results of the survey showed that among heavy side manufacturers, only seven per cent anticipated a rise in sales in the next quarter, a decline from the 68 per cent who anticipated a rise when asked in 2017 Q1. A sharp rise in input costs was also reported in Q2, with 93 per cent of heavy side manufacturers and all of those on the light side reporting an increase in costs compared with a year earlier.
The strongest inflationary pressures came from raw materials, fuel and energy, owing to depreciation in Sterling during 2016, alongside skills shortages pushing up wage bills.
As Rebecca Larkin, CPA Senior Economist said: “Despite healthy growth in the second quarter, construction product manufacturers have turned more pessimistic over performance for the rest of the year, reigniting concern that the triple hit of imported inflation in raw materials, higher fuel and energy prices and the persistent pressure on labour costs will have a negative impact on demand and construction activity over the next 12 months.
“Inflation is expected to endure as similar proportions anticipate that costs will continue to climb over the next year. Government’s ability to progress the pipeline for large public sector and infrastructure projects is now more important than ever as a means of sustaining activity when private sector decision-making may be stalling.”

Kalwall sheds light on education
Kalwall translucent cladding has been extensively used for the impressive refurbishment of the main teaching block at Featherstone High School in Middlesex. The renovation required removal of the old concrete spandrel panels, repairs to the concrete structure and then over-cladding with Kalwall panels supported on a new steel frame which was added to extend the floor space. The two fully replaced elevations are a perfect example of how Kalwall can be used for the refurbishment of old and failing cladding and for aged buildings.
The new façades allow floor to ceiling diffused and healthy daylight to flood the interior while providing privacy for students and removing any distractions.
Sika Liquid Plastics
Three decades of pioneering innovation with Decothane
1987 was the year that Margaret Thatcher won a third term in office, Timothy Dalton made his debut as James Bond and the Queen officially opened the Docklands Light Railway. Thirty years of pioneering innovation later, Decothane continues to lead the roofing sector with a portfolio of systems to suit all application requirements across new build and refurbishment projects. Times may have changed since 1987, but the enduring appeal of Decothane for both specifiers and contractors has been as consistent as the demanding conditions of the wet and windy British weather. Amongst the innovations they have introduced over the past 30 years, Decothane Ultra has set a new benchmark.

The Ultimetal fabric with the high levels of solar refl ectance and low levels of emissivity a orded by its metallised coating provide industry leading levels of shading performance. The 50+ years’ experience of weaving glass-fi bre based shading fabrics producing the highest levels of performance from the thinnest of materials. The Ultimetal fabric is less than one quarter of a millimetre thick, permitting a blind of over 3.0 metres in height to be stored in a cassette of less than 55mm square. Powder coated to match the window frames, the blinds become almost invisible.
Light transmission levels for the fabric in single figures can remove glare, improving workspaces and comfort zones alike. Solar reflectance (Rs) of over 70% can reduce heat gain through the glass by 25%, 40% to over 50% dependant on glass properties. The blinds also improve the insulation of the window by 15%, 20%, 30% or more, reducing temperature loss.
Helifix Dixie micro-piles support award winning garden
Best Show Garden at the 2017 Chelsea Flower Show was awarded to the M&G Garden, for which Helifix supplied some unseen, but critical, components. The main garden contractor, Crocus, contacted Helifix who supplied 12 Dixie micro-piles which were rapidly installed by their approved installer, Charterbuild. The circular, hollow section, piles were simply screwed vertically into the ground, using a hydraulic drive head, at the specified spacings and calculated torque, with no excavations or spoil removal. The helical lead section was installed first followed by extension sections until they reached the required load bearing strata. Each installed pile was then fitted with a bespoke, precision engineered, flat top plate bracket.

Coating wood - the challenges External Works
Although wood is an incredibly versatile and beautiful material it does suffer from some problems, as Sioo:x Wood explains. For exterior applications in Use Classes 3.1 and 3.2 (EN 335 Part 2) wood in exposed conditions will weather to give a silvery grey driftwood appearance.
However, when wood is sheltered (such as under overhanging eaves) then the wood will retain its original colouration. This leads to a very unsightly appearance with uneven weathering, examples of which are not hard to find. The weathering of wood has been researched for over 100 years and although we understand very well why it happens and what causes it, there has never been a solution developed.
Conventional wood coatings rely on adhesion to the wood surface for their integrity. Over time, the movement of the wood under the coating due to the effects of wetting and drying result in localised failure of the coating, usually at the earlywood latewood boundary. Once this happens, liquid water is able to penetrate below the surface of the coating, which is then forced off due to hydrostatic pressure.
The only remedy is to sand back to good material and re-coat. The only way to stop this from happening is to use more flexible coatings, but this is not feasible because the coating would then be tacky and pick up dirt very rapidly in service. Conventional paints and varnishes also use carbonbased chemistry and carbon-based compounds are susceptible to UV degradation when exposed to sunlight.
Clear coatings suffer from the additional problem that the wood underneath is susceptible to UV degradation and failure can also occur because the surface layers of the wood start to lose their structural integrity as the lignin (which binds the wood cells together) degrades. Putting UV stabilisers and filters in the coatings may slow down this degradation to
some extent, but it is the wood that is the Achilles heel in the clear-coating system.
The SiOO:x Wood Protection System is different; it is not a coating, but an envelope. The protection system has two components; the first penetrates the wood where it gradually forms an inert glassy polymer, by reaction with atmospheric carbon dioxide. The second component acts to seal and protect the first application until it is fully cured, but it also forms an inert water resistant envelope which penetrates the wood and gradually creates a grey surface appearance.
It does not stop the lignin from degrading, but it takes the same role by keeping the wood cells glued together, essentially using the strength of glass. Just as important, the wood now has an even weathered appearance once the protection system cures. This means that the unsightly patchy weathering of exterior wood cladding is no longer a problem. SiOO:x Wood Protection locks in the beauty of wood. The SiOO:x polymers that form in the wood have siliconoxygen bonds, the same as glass and are completely UV stable.

3 Marley Eternit
Handmade clay tiles create historic-style new build
Italian architects, in conjunction with the multi-discipline company STEAM, designed the €130m Monselice Hospital in Northern East Italy. “Our solution was to cap as many stacks as possible with the Studor Maxi-Vent Air Admittance Valve (AAV) which fits discretely within the roof space”, commented Studor’s UK Technical Sales Director Daniel Rath. “The Maxi-Vent protects the trap seals within the drainage system by allowing the intake of air so that each soil pipe can maintain the right level of pressure within the system. This is critical, especially in a hospital environment, ensuring there is no cross-contamination from the drainage system into the habitable space. Furthermore, the Maxi-Vents eliminate the need for any roof penetrations, thus reducing the amount of pipework required saving both time and money.” Enquiry 53
Canterbury handmade clay plain tiles from leading roof systems manufacturer Marley Eternit have been used to create an authentic roof for a new build historic-style cottage in the Denham Conservation area. The homeowner explains: “We chose the Marley Eternit handmade tiles because they achieved the traditional, heritage look demanded by local planning and blended in well with the rafters and open eaves on the roof. They also complemented the copper gutters and downpipes, which needed to fit with planning requirements as well.”Marley Eternit’s range of Canterbury tiles are handmade by skilled craftsmen, using locally sourced Etruria Marl, generally accepted to be the finest clay for strength and durability.

Samuel Heath Concealment enhances fire safety
Powermatic controlled, concealed door closers tick all the right boxes when it comes to meeting the legislation, regulations and product performance standards that govern fire safety.
British designed and manufactured, Powermatic door closers are available in standard and Free Swing versions. The preferred choice when it comes to assuring the aesthetics of interiors, the door closers deliver many additional benefits, including enhanced reliability, which can assure continued fire safety in all types of projects.
Both models are CE marked, making them suitable for fire door applications. They have also been independently tested and proved to meet the requirements for one hour and halfhour fire doors under BS EN 1634-1, as well as carrying Certifire accreditation and being approved for use by the British Woodworking Federation under its fire door and doorsets scheme.
In addition to impressive fire performance credentials, the door closers also help to assure continued service of the fire door by reducing the risk of damage through vandalism. A damaged door closer can lead to failure of the fire door to perform the duty for which it is intended; to keep fire and smoke at bay.
Unlike surface-mounted door closers, Powermatic door closers are totally concealed when the door is closed and show few visible parts when it is open. This reduces the risk of them being damaged through vandalism or tampering, enhancing the products’ suitability for a wide variety of fire door applications in social housing, hotel, health, residential care and commercial projects.

When considering seals for doors, the threshold can often be overlooked. But far from being a low-risk area, an unsealed threshold presents a serious smoke hazard, as cold smoke from a distant fire will infiltrate first at the threshold. It’s vital for acoustic containment too, any threshold gap will allow sound to pass straight through.

Coolair showcases stylish new R32 air conditioning
One of the UK’s leading air conditioning companies has just installed the latest wall-mounted system in its Cheshire offices to showcase the future to its customers.
Coolair Equipment Limited has specifically chosen the new M Series MSZLN R32 air conditioning for its Dunkinfield office to highlight the change in refrigerants now being offered to UK customers and the significant advantages this can bring.
“The existing split heat pump system in our manager’s office had come to the end of its life, so we chose the perfect replacement: with this stylish unit which also shows off the full benefits of the new refrigerant in a fantastic stylish unit”, explained Steve Valentine, Regional Director of Coolair Equipment.
Coolair has more than 30-years’ experience in the industry and has worked closely with Mitsubishi Electric as one of its largest customers.
The M-Series MSZ-LN wall mounted split system is the first in Mitsubishi Electric’s UK line-up to use R32 refrigerant which has a low global warming potential (GWP) of 675 – less than one third of the most popular refrigerant, R410A.
Following recent changes in legislation, R32 refrigerant is expected to swiftly become the standard for split type air conditioning systems.
In March 2014, European Parliament passed the 2014 EU F-Gas Regulation legislation with the key objective of reducing F-Gas emissions by 79% between 2015 and 2030. The overall aim is to cut availability of hydrofluorocarbons with a high GWP. R32 makes up 50% of the existing R410A refrigerant found in many current systems. In addition, the volumetric capacity of R32 is around 20% higher than R410A, meaning system refrigerant volumes are lower.
Going forward, R32 will play a huge role in helping to reduce the environmental impact from air conditioning systems, heat pumps and
refrigeration. What’s more, it’s also easier to reuse and recycle as it’s a single component refrigerant.
“This new unit gives us a cost-effective method of future proofing our air conditioning systems at Coolair House,” adds Mr Valentine. “In addition to delivering high performance with a lower GWP, the 3.5kw unit also includes automatic room sensor technology and Wi–Fi control as standard and it was easy to connect to our existing controls which is important to us.”
The new M-Series models have a built-in Wi-Fi interface which enables full control and monitoring via the company’s MELCloud App. The sophisticated 3D i-see sensor within the unit also automatically monitors room occupancy, position and body temperatures to deliver customised comfort.

Unidrain – the advocate of “aesthetic functionalism”
Being the first to develop the linear drain that can be placed against the wall, was just the beginning for Unidrain. Since then, more innovative and aesthetic design solutions have emerged from the young Danish design company.
To build on the original success, Unidrain launched the exclusive HighLine-series in new colours in 2017, followed by the Reframe Collection, which is a series of bathroom accessories grounded in Scandinavian design and quality to complement the existing portfolio.
Improving the existing one product at a time
Each product in the Reframe Collection is designed with innovative, unique and intelligent features to improve functionality. The Reframe Collection is reframing the existing, bringing new functionality to bathroom accessories. For example, a magnetically integrated soap shelf and shower wiper. Besides creating a place for the shower essentials, the shelf also provides a fixed home for the shower wiper, due to hidden magnets in the wall mount and wiper.
Matching details
Together with the award winning HighLineseries the Reframe Collection provides an opportunity to match all metal details in the bathroom creating exactly the look you want. A warm, welcoming sensation in copper or brass, or a more streamlined and modern feeling in black or steel. The Reframe Collection also goes well with the customized drain solution, where you can fit the base with the tile of your choosing instead of using a grating.
