Message from the Presidents We, as an organization, have chosen to respond to the needs of the survivors of child abuse, abandonment and sexual trafficking in the country. This is done through offering our time, effort as we try to rekindle the very essence and spirit of being a child – something that was forcefully taken from them at very young ages.   To take the advocacy a step further, Tugon has ventured into the aspect of prevention to further widen our reach and reinforce our dedication into putting an end to these social cancers. With this new undertaking, we felt it needed a new symbol to represent its new path. Thus the Pinwheel. This new icon of Tugon represents the act of “turning one’s luck around,” something we definitely aim to do for our babies and girls.   What we do is not an easy task. It is something that definitely requires a lot of heart, patience, and determination. With this, we challenge you to join in the fight, and be a beacon of change because abuse can end with you.

Our Vision To be at the forefront of the transformation towards a country free from child abuse and abandonment and an icon that serves as a constant reminder of our purpose.

Tugon aims to play an active role in addressing the issues of child abuse and abandonment and envisionas a country that is finally free from these ugly realities. In our efforts to achieve this, Tugon strives to be a symbol, an embodiment of this fight against child abuse and abandonment and to involve every Filipino in this endeavor such that the cause no longer becomes Tugon’s advocacy but OUR advocacy.

Our Mission Tugon advocates against the existence of child sexual abuse and abandonment in the country. We practice play therapy to foster the recovery and growth of the survivors. By raising awareness, we engage and empower the community in the prevention of these realities.

10

At the very core of Tugon’s purpose is playing a creative role in the healing and growth of the survivors of child sexual abuse and abandonment. More than just promoting their recovery from their traumatic experience, Tugon strives for them to be able to rise above the horrors that they had gone through and grow as better persons.   Tugon advocates these children’s plight as our own and as such, we also work towards the prevention of child sexual abuse and abandonment. By spreading our cause through various awareness efforts, we involve the community–the Tugon members, the Ateneo students, staff, and faculty, our partner institutions, and the Filipino community – in our purpose and incite in them the desire to work towards a child abuse-free country.

Founded in 1983, Concordia caters to the various needs of abandoned and/or neglected children, from infants to crawlers and toddlers.   As the organization grew, they expanded to serve the street and urban poor children of Sta. REDEEMER’S HOME FOUNDATION, INC. Born of a vision given to Benilda L. Cruz, urging her to pursue her dream of putting up a home for disadvantaged children. The power of testimony moved her Christian fellowship group to embrace her vision; and thus was planted the seed of another of the Lord’s work. Established in September 1997, the Redeemer’s Home Foundation continues to provide a Christian home to orphans and children who have been abandoned, abused, and neglected. 13

Partner Institutions MERITXELL CHILDREN’S FOUNDATION Mertixell cares for both abandoned babies and girls. Both the babies and the girls in this institution live a normal life with their house parents and social workers, who work hard in taking care of the kids and making sure that they would grow to be responsible citizens of their country.

CRIBS RECEIVING HOMES CRIBS Receiving Homes or RH provides an alternative home environment for abandoned, surrendered and neglected children aged days old to 2 ½ years old. The program is staffed with professional, compassionate and competent caregivers to ensure optimum health care, nutrition and age-appropriate stimulation for early detection of developmental delays and prevention of illness. TUGON assists in the early child development program by implementing the psychomotor stimulation and age-appropriate activities. In CRIBS, each child is uniquely loved.

LAURA VICUÑA FOUNDATION, INC. The Laura Vicuña Center in Cubao is the residential center which houses street girls who may be orphaned, neglected, abandoned, battered, morally endangered and sexually abused. It aims to establish a family-like environment to give the girls a chance to grow up and transform in a wholesome home life.

14

CRIBS NEW BEGINNINGS NB is a residential home for young female survivors of sexual abuse aged 7-17 years. It provides a nurturing and therapeutic environment for the healing and recovery of each child. The program utilizes a multidisciplinary team approach in meeting the physical, emotional, educational and spiritual needs of the children. In CRIBS, healing through the arts is an important part of the recovery process. In line with these, TUGON serves by providing recreational activities for the girls in building back their trust and self-esteem.

15

Major Initiatives Area Visits. We help foster the growth and development of the abandoned babies we cater to through play therapy and take part in the healing process of the sexually abused girls by doing activities that allow them to realize their personal worth after their painful experience of abuse.

Enough Abuse Campaign (EAC). Tugon’s flagship project aims to spread the organization’s advocacy throughout the Ateneo community through a series of creative projects and fundraising events. Big projects included in the year-long campaign are: Awareness Talk. Prominent people that also fight for our cause are invited as speakers to talk about their efforts towards the cause, their personal experiences with regards to child abuse and abandonment, and how other people can be involved in the issue. Pinwheels for Change. Adopted from Prevent Child Abuse America’s campaign named Pinwheels for Prevention, the project aims to create the pinwheel as a new symbol of our advocacy, as well as hope and a bright future for the survivors of child abuse and abandonment. The pinwheel acts as an uplifting reminder that every child deserves a happy childhood.

16

Pamaskong Hiling. A December project that aims to fulfill the Christmas wishes of our kids in our partner institutions by asking the Ateneo community to sponsor a gift for each child. National Child Sexual Abuse Awareness Week (NCSAAW). The EAC culminates in the NCSAAW. Held in partnership with ECPAT, NCSAAW aims to spread awareness regarding child abuse and empower the children of ECPAT through creative activities.

Shared Value Program. An initiative that aims to aid our partner institutions in attaining sustainability, the program seeks to build a network of companies, organizations, and other entities for our partner institutions. It markets the institutions as beneficiaries of the CSR initiatives of various corporations, foundations, NGOs, etc.

About the Logo

The pinwheel has a symbolic meaning of “turning one’s luck around.” As Tugon does its mission of sharing time, hope, love, and warmth with children who are survivors of abandonment and sexual abuse, this is exactly what we aim for – to bring about change to the lives of these children.

The different colors of the pinwheel suggest the happy childhood we seek to uphold. Green denotes the healing and growth that we desire for our babies and our girls. In a lighter shade, it also denotes a certain optimism, hope, and happiness; hope that every child gets to experience a happy childhood. Pink represents the compassion and affection we have for these children. It also represents the innocence of a child which Tugon strives to protect. Lastly, red is a symbol of passion, our passion for this advocacy. Tugon’s pinwheel, then, becomes a symbol of more than just change; it is an uplifting reminder of childhood, one that is filled with innocence and memories worth reminiscing. Despite the adversities that tainted their early years of life, we give them hope for change, a better life, and a happy childhood all children deserve.
