YEARS
PRESIDENT’S REPORT
2017 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
By HBA President Peter Grant
President Peter Grant Grant Homes Remodel & Restoration
Greetings all! It’s hard to believe that the first quarter of the year has already ended! HBA leadership and staff have been working diligently to make your membership more beneficial and profitable than ever. Socially, January’s General Membership Meeting at the Summit Club kicked off with the Council presidents’ installation and the Robson PAC Challenge while members and guests also enjoyed a delicious meal and a stunning panoramic view of Tulsa. If you’ve never attended this event, DO NOT miss it next year, as it is one of our most luxurious and enjoyable meetings. Many HBA members traveled to Orlando for the 2017 International Builders’ Show and attended some exceptional educational and organizational meetings. IBS is truly an awesome event and every member should attend at least one Show to appreciate the size and scope of NAHB. While at IBS several members were certified as NAHB Designation Course Instructors. The HBA now has five (5) nationally certified instructors to teach designation courses to association members. With guidance from Mike Fournier, HBA Education Chair, we will continue to develop our certified instructor corps and become an education hub for the region. Thank you to Ryan Farabough, Mike Fournier, Brandon L. Jackson, and John Madden for taking time out of your Show schedule to earn your instructor certification and in doing so, give back to our HBA. Standing proactively in support of our industry and recognizing the obvious shortage of qualified subcontractors and laborers prompted our Workforce Development Chair, John Madden, along with Ken Klein, Brandon L. Jackson, and Jeff Smith, to establish relationships with educators at area high schools, tech schools, colleges, and HBI Job Corps that will provide students with career training in the building industry. Their efforts and those of others will guarantee qualified and educated trade personnel in the workforce pipeline as well as future HBA member recruits. In February, the first President’s Reception of 2017 resulted in great attendance and requests for the new Ambassadors Program! The majority of those attending requested a personal Ambassador who will guide these new members to achieving Association success. Thank you to every Ambassador for sharing your time, experience, and wisdom with our new members. Members supporting members is an important quality of our HBA “family” and it is something that I will continue to champion throughout the year. Outdoor exhibits added another new dimension to the 2017 Greater Tulsa Home & Garden Show. Show Chair, John Madden, and every volunteer’s tireless efforts are what made this Show possible. Their contributions were recognized and are truly appreciated. The outdoor exhibits included a custom designed Tiny Home built onsite with assistance provided by Tulsa Tech and Job Corps students. Connell Curran spearheaded this project and his leadership deserves to be commended.
Vice President/Treasurer Ryan Farabough Farabough Homes, LLC Vice President/Secretary Erin DeWeese Brian D. Wiggs Homes, Inc. While tours of the home were particularly popular at the Show, the Tiny Home hit the road making a stop at the Claremore Home & Garden Show before being featured at this year’s Designer Showcase.
Past President Brandon L. Jackson Tara Custom Homes
While staff was busy at the Home & Garden Show, construction began on an HBA administration office expansion project. The garage area east of the Robson Companies Board Room has been transformed into three new office spaces. The new offices will house events-related staff including Paige Butler, our new Events Center intern, and will allow all employees to work in a common area on the ground floor. The attention to, and awareness of, the needs of HBA staff by the members of the Building Maintenance led by Dub Jester is truly appreciated.
Membership Chair Weldon Bowman W Design, LLC
The goals and trajectory of the HBA Charitable Foundation continue to move upward. Last year, the Foundation contributed over $216,000 in providing assistance to others and making our community a better place to live. Earlier this year, Foundation members participated in a strategic planning session led by NAHB staffers. The result is a plan that will be implemented by individuals who are responsible for the Foundation’s success to-date and who are committed to a shared vision of the future. I invite you to join me at the 2017 Appetite for Construction on April 27 at Metro Appliances and More for the HBA’s annual fundraiser benefitting the Foundation. At that time, please take a few minutes to congratulate Eric Daffern on his election as 2017 HBA Charitable Foundation President! In closing, thank you for the privilege of serving this great association as your 2017 president. I encourage every HBA member to engage, participate, and act at one or more of its many meetings, programs, or events. I promise that your participation will return valuable dividends for you just as it has for me. HBA staff and I are here to assist you, so please do not hesitate to contact us if we may be of help. I wish you great success and look forward to seeing you soon,
Peter Grant

By Executive Vice President/CEO Jeffrey Smith Happy spring HBA Members! This season is the most active time for our association. Between the Home and Garden Show in March and Parade of Homes in June, there is simply no down time. We have golf tournaments, a fishing tournament, Associate Appreciation Night, Day at the Capital advocacy, and two Charitable Foundation events, Appetite for Construction and Cinco de Mayo at the Designer Showcase. I hope you have been able to attend the events that have already occurred and would like to extend an invitation to any of the events on the horizon. The best way to network with other members is by attending and participating in HBA events. The Home and Garden Show was once again an outstanding success for the association and the participating vendors. We heard nothing but compliments and praise from the more than 500 vendors in the show and commitments for next year’s show have already started to roll in. Our advertising efforts promote the show as the largest and best Home and Garden Show in the area and it could not be successful without the efforts of over 100 volunteer members. This year I had the opportunity to speak with a couple of newer HBA members at the Show and when I explain to them how many volunteers help produce the show and how many hours so many of those volunteers contribute they stand in amazement. It is easy to see how many of our members get “hooked” on volunteering through their efforts at the Show and seeing the longevity and consistency of so many of the volunteers. A special thanks go out to the 2017 Home and Garden Show Chairman John Madden and vice chairman Chris Hodges for your extraordinary leadership. Also to the Home and Garden Show Past Chairs, your behind the scenes service and knowledge is overwhelming and the association could not show enough gratitude for your decades of service to the event. Planning for the 2018 Show has already begun and will include a completely redesigned layout of the lower level, 2 center features and the 2nd year of the outdoor exhibit space. I would have never dreamed I would see Roger Cooper and Francine Bandy in a serious battle of Beer Pong, but that’s exactly what happened at Associate Appreciation Night. 150 guests were treated to a night of good food and fellowship while playing Beer Pong, Corn Hole, and Ladder Ball. After the games, competition, and rewards were handed out the evening moved to the HBA Patio for drinks and entertainment by Mark Gibson. What a perfect evening it was for everyone to let loose and enjoy one another’s company while appreciating the efforts of our associate members.
So many of our activities are chaired and produced by the associate members and after speaking with other local Executive Officers, I must say the Tulsa HBA is truly blessed to have such a caring and committed group of members. Fishing and Golf tournaments have a smaller audience than the larger events previously mentioned, but still play a vital role in the success of the association and each of its members. Any opportunity we can provide for our members to network with one another while participating in an event is a huge success. What could be better than spending 4+ hours on a golf course or 8+ hours in a bass boat with a business associate. The bonds that are made in those environments last a lifetime and contribute greatly to the success of the HBA. Thank to Jimmy Holmes for chairing the fishing tournament once again, Susan McKeon for her efforts to chair the Owasso Golf Tournament, and Metro Appliances for their team effort to chair the upcoming HBA Golf Tournament at Forest Ridge. Finally, the Parade of Homes is less than 2 months away and the 2017 Parade will have more than 150 homes on display for the public. The committee has been hard at work since November and this year’s event will surely be a success for the 60+ builders that have entered their beautiful homes. I encourage all of our members to attend one of the two Twilight Tours, this year at Stone Canyon in Owasso and Yorktown in Jenks. Erin DeWeese has done a masterful job in his chairmanship so far, and I know his and the committee’s efforts will not go unnoticed. Please reach out to me and or my staff if you want to find out how to participate in any of these events in the future. That’s the scoop for now,
Jeffrey Smith

Consumer Confidence Buoys Jump in Area Home Starts Consumer confidence contributed to sending housing starts for February soaring to their highest levels for the month in at least nine years, a local officer in the industry said. Home construction for February in the Tulsa area rose 28.1 percent over the same month in 2016, according to the permit tracking service New Orders Weekly. With 287, it betters last year’s 224 and exceeds any posted for the month since 2009, the oldest year cited in the data. “Regardless of political controversies, there’s no doubt that consumer confidence is rising,” Peter Grant, president of the Home Builders Association of Greater Tulsa, said Friday in a telephone interview.“We’ve had a stock market that’s been growing the last three months without hesitation.

“That’s given people new hope that this new administration knows what it’s doing. There is new job growth and sustained jobs and companies staying in the U.S. That is all contributing to this economic confidence.” Home construction for the year also is up by 12.4 percent, going from 437 in ‘16 to 491. “We pretty much skipped a winter, which has been great for the builders,” Grant said. A sufficient labor force, however, is lacking, he said. “We don’t have enough workers now,” Grant said. “Now that we’re building again, a lot of people left the industry. They had to move on and find something new. We’re really starving for qualified workers.” To remedy that, the HBA is providing outreach. Particularly at the Home Builders Association, we’re doing everything we can to create workforce development, starting with high school students and working with vo-techs and introducing them to opportunities in residential construction,” Grant said. “We’re working hard locally and nationally to knock the face off ‘You have to go to college.’ Not everyone is geared to go to college.” “Tulsa topped the month’s starts with 41, followed by Jenks with 40, unincorporated Wagoner County with 38 and Broken Arrow with 33. Tulsa also leads in residential construction for the year with 83 starts, ahead of Broken Arrow (62), unincorporated Wagoner County (59) and Jenks (54). HOME BUILDING NEWS 2017

STATE NEWS OSHBA DAY AT THE CAPITAL SHOWS STATE SUPPORT
By : Jorie Helms
Our annual Day at the Capitol was a big success. We more than doubled our record turnout to make it the largest Homebuilders Day ever. We were so excited to have over 100 people supporting the association. This turnout truly shows how much support there is statewide for the Homebuilders and the industry. After the initial meeting it was time to go meet our Representatives and Senators. Personally I was searching for Senator Sykes and Representative Kannady. Neither one were in their offices, however I did leave my information for both. Since we had plenty of time to walk around the Capitol I was able to go into the Governor and Lieutenant Governors offices. On the way to go see Senator Sykes with Al Reeves (President Dan Reeves father) I noticed I could go into the Gallery of the Senate Chamber. Many selfies were taken. All in all a great Homebuilders day at the Capitol! The support echoed through the halls and I know that next year will be even better.
A Note from the Editor: I am very excited to start working with the Oklahoma State Home Builders Association as the Director of Communications and Outreach. Before starting, I was with the Oklahoma City affiliate of Telemundo and Univision working in the production department, after which I did Social Media Marketing for small local businesses.

Luxury Party Van Goes High Tech With Help From BlueSpeed AV The owner of this coach van enjoys taking it to concerts, sports games, dinners and more with friends and family, but decided to kick it up a notch by tasking BlueSpeed AV with transforming it into the ultimate private entertainment space on four wheels. “Regardless of the type of project thrown at us, we believe in having the most stable, reliable and high-performing creative solutions for our clients,” shared Ryan Sullivan, owner of BlueSpeed AV in Tulsa. “Whether it is a home or a special project like this, we always start by focusing on how people will be interacting with the space and build the design around that element.” When BlueSpeed AV first opened up the van they found that the original battery was being overloaded by the systems already installed by the manufacturer and the wiring had begun to melt to the frame. This was the beginning of a complete gut job on the van’s infrastructure. The mess of wiring had to be cleaned up, the relays and fuses replaced, and networking reworked entirely; and quickly the van’s wiring needs were on par with those of a three bedroom house. Initially, the van manufacturer had installed a Crestron automation system, and it had four remotes that controlled the space. The cumbersome design essentially required guests to go through a tutorial in order to use it; time better spent enjoying the the van’s features and festivities on the way to its destination. The BlueSpeed AV team started the process of centralizing the van with a Savant automation backed by Apple’s iOS operating system; giving the van’s technology unparalleled usability and reliability. The Savant system acts as the brains controlling of all the systems inside the van, so guests can easily manage and make adjustments to all of the van’s features directly from a dedicated iPad. The van includes video and audio distribution with three top-of-the-line Samsung TVs that can display different video feeds and switch between audio channels. This comes in handy when multiple sporting games want to be watched simultaneously as a group. Using the van’s iPad guests can lower the automated Lutron window shades, recline the custom leather couch, and sip drinks from the wet bar; while streaming music from their favorite playlists on Pandora or other players, and viewing photos from their night using their device’s Airplay function over the onboard WiFi. 30
HOME BUILDING NEWS 2017
A convenient iPad is stationed between the two, air ride captain chairs at the back of the vehicle, and is perched on a launchport to accommodate charging while still being detachable. If a guest doesn’t have an Airplay function on their phone, a handy audio jack is easily available to hardwire their device to stream content. Although the driving cockpit is independent from the guest quarters, they can easily communicate via intercom between the captain chair iPad and the other tablet in the driver’s area. BlueSpeed AV not only addressed the automation technology inside the van but also installed custom wood, carpentry, and lighting to create a premier luxury party van the client. With all this top-end technology on board, BlueSpeed ensured that the van’s system could be remotely accessed for any service check-ins. This way, all passengers need do is call the BlueSpeed service team and the issue can be fixed swiftly and off site, without slowing down the fun!

PHILANTHROPY
We Built a TINY Home With a HUGE Impact! The HBA Charitable Foundation partnered with the Designer Showcase and Tulsa Tech students to build a TINY home during the 2017 Tulsa Home & Garden Show. The wood frame arrived at the Home & Garden Show on Monday and continued to be built throughout the duration of the Show. Once complete, the public was able to walk through the home and see all the different features. The home may be TINY but the impact the home is making on our community is HUGE. The home not only gives people an opportunity to see and experience a different type of living but it also supports our community and educational initiatives. During the construction of the home, Tulsa Tech Students in the electrical and carpentry program joined HBA members on the scene and participated in field training by helping construct the tiny home. Richard Frederick and a group of his HBI students also came out one day of the Show to help with the build. This handson training allowed these students to get a feel for working in the industry first-hand and further develop skills for their career. Now that the home is complete, the community impact is far from over. The tiny home is currently for sale at $64,000 and net proceeds from the home will benefit the Foundation for Tulsa Schools. After the Home & Garden Show, the home was moved to its current destination, the Designer Showcase home. If you haven’t had a chance to come by and see this incredible home make sure you take a few minutes to stop by the Tulsa Designer Showcase from April 21-May 21. The home is 192-square-feet and includes sleeping for three, a full bathroom, kitchen and dining area.
