2018 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

SMITH’S SCOOP

President Ryan Farabough Farabough Homes, LLC

By Executive Vice President/ CEO Jeffrey Smith

Vice President/Treasurer Erin DeWeese Brian D. Wiggs Homes, Inc.

As summer winds down and we look forward to an event-filled fall, I am particularly excited about two upcoming events. The Evening of Giving and Build My Future are events that fit directly within out mission statement of “Supporting our community through education, membership requirements, and philanthropic efforts”. The Evening of Giving is our largest philanthropic fundraising event of the year and will be held on September 20th in the Mike Fretz Event Center. The HBA Remodelers Council produces the event in conjunction with the HBA Charitable Foundation and the 2018 partner beneficiary is Revitalize T-Town (formerly Rebuilding Together Tulsa). If you have never been to an Evening of Giving I would highly encourage you to reserve your individual ticket or table sponsorship today as the event has sold out the last 2 years. The Evening of Giving is an upscale dinner with silent and live auctions, raffles, great food and drinks, and an opportunity to support two great philanthropic organizations within the Tulsa community. Since 2015 the event has grown in its amount of support from $63,000 in 2015 to $86,000 in 2016 to $171,000 in 2017. These funds have gone to support partnering organizations like the Lindsey House and Family and Children’s Services. With our 2018 partner of Revitalize T-Town, our goal is to repair dozens of roofs and/ or special projects for clients on the waiting list with Revitalize T-Town. Build My Future is our workforce development initiative that we will host on October 25th at the Tulsa Tech Riverside Campus. Since I started my career in the industry more than 10 years ago, the one common theme that comes up in conversation amongst everyone is the difficulty in finding and hiring qualified employees, thus creating a delay in construction that sometimes prevents the project from occurring. Workforce development has been the #1 initiative for NAHB for the last 5 years and recently the NAHB Chairman of the Board, Randy Noel, commited that NAHB would train more than 50,000 individuals for the construction industry within the next 5 years.

Vice President/Secretary Mike Fournier The Sonrise Companies Past President Peter Grant Grant Homes Remodel & Restoration That number is still a far cry from the more than 2 million employees we are short in our field, and with the average age of a construction worker now reaching 58 years old, it’s only going to get worse. Build My Future has two components for the day – from 8:30am2:30pm we will host more than 1,500 high school students to participate in hands on construction activities – and from 3:30pm-7:00pm we will be open to the public with an emphasis on targeted groups of veterans, diversions programs, and parents of the students attending during the daytime hours. We currently have more than 25 vendors that will be showcasing a hands-on experience related to their field of construction in hopes to encourage students to continue their education through construction programs at Tulsa Tech, OSU-IT, and OSUStillwater. There is no cost to be a vendor, so if you have an interest in growing your pool of potential employees, then contact me today for more information on being a vendor at the event. This will become an annual event and our hope is to begin to create a trend of our youth getting the proper training to be employed in the construction industry for years to come. Please join us at either of these great events as we continue to further the mission of the Home Builders Association of Greater Tulsa!

NAHB, HBI Pledge to Train 50,000 Workers Over Next 5 Years In a statement commending the White House plan to expand workforce development, Noel said, “NAHB applauds President Trump’s leadership for signing an executive order that will develop a national strategy to expand job-training and apprenticeship opportunities for students and workers and give them the proper tools to succeed in the American workforce. Attending a White House event on workforce development, NAHB Chairman Randy Noel pledged that NAHB and the Home Builders Institute (HBI) will educate and train 50,000 new workers over the next five years for careers in the construction trades.

President Trump reaches to shake hands with HBI student Miguel Silva as he announces the workforce development initiative.

President Trump signed an executive order that establishes the National Council for the American Worker, which will develop a national strategy for training and retraining workers for high-demand industries. As part of this initiative, the administration is asking companies and associations to sign a pledge committing them to expanding apprenticeships, increasing onthe-job training and providing students and workers the training and opportunities they need to succeed in the American workforce. In a statement commending the White House plan to expand workforce development, Noel said, “NAHB applauds President Trump’s leadership for signing an executive order that will develop a national strategy to expand jobtraining and apprenticeship opportunities for students and workers and give them the proper tools to succeed in the American workforce.”

Housing Starts Down for June but Builders Remain Positive Area home construction for June was down 15 percent from the same month a year ago. Housing starts for the month totaled 218, compared to 257 for June 2017, according to the permit tracking service New Orders Weekly. However, builder members have remained positive. HBA member Simmons Homes spoke out about building activity this year. “We have had great results from the Parade of Homes,” said Lonnie Shackelford, president of Simmons Homes. “With steady building activity and interest across all of our communities in metro Tulsa, the company is on track to reach our sales goals for the year.” Though the housing start numbers have been a downthis year, many builders like Simmons are still seeing steady business and expect to continue. Tulsa led area housing starts in June with 44, followed by Broken Arrow with 43, incorporated Wagoner County with 29, Bixby with 24 and Jenks with 22. For the year, Tulsa leads with 253, and Broken Arrow is second with 223.

40Below Council Builds Shed for Community Food Bank of Eastern OK On July 19th, the 40Below Council of young professionals donated their time and services to build a 12x12 shed for the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma. The shed will be used to store food and supplies for families in need.

The mission of the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma is to feed the hungry of eastern Oklahoma through a network of Partner Agencies and to engage our communities in ending hunger. Our vision is food security, with dignity, for all eastern Oklahomans. We are the largest private hunger-relief organization in eastern Oklahoma.

The 40 Below Council puts a huge emphasis on community outreach and this project is just one of the many ways the HBA Charitable Foundation and 40 Below Council are making our community a better place. The Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma distributes food and other grocery items to 465 Partner Programs in eastern Oklahoma, including food pantries, emergency shelters, soup kitchens, senior citizen centers and after-school programs. In 2017 Fiscal Year, the Food Bank distributed more than 24.7 million pounds of food throughout the 24 counties of eastern Oklahoma.

Special thanks to our 40Below volunteers who spent time and energy to build this shed and support the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma cause. Your volunteer efforts have helped us continue to make the community of Tulsa a better place!

Broken Arrow Mayor among Oklahoma leaders invited to White House Broken Arrow Mayor Craig Thurmond has been invited to the White House for the third time since January. Thurmond will attend the White House Conference with Oklahoma Local and County Leaders on Aug. 21. The purpose of the conference is to develop a working relationship between the White House and leaders within the State of Oklahoma. “It’s always an honor to be invited to a meeting at the White House,” Thurmond said. “I look forward to discussing issues that matter most to Broken Arrow residents, and Oklahomans as a whole, with the President’s staff.”

He was previously invited as a select group of U.S. mayors to attend Mayors’ Day at the White House: A conversation with President Donald Trump in January where President Trump announced plans to spend $1.7 trillion on infrastructure. Thurmond was also invited to attend the Mayor’s Infrastructure Discussion in March, where a select group of mayors met with D.J. Gribbin, Special Assistant to the President for Infrastructure. City Manager Michael Spurgeon joined Thurmond at the March meeting, and will again accompany the mayor on Aug. 21.
