PRESIDENT’S REPORT
2016 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
By HBA President Brandon L. Jackson
President Brandon L. Jackson Tara Custom Homes, Inc.
Greetings HBA members, As the first quarter of 2016 comes to a close, allow me to thank our members, Councils and Chapters, Executive Committee and Board of Directors, and HBA staff for embracing my goals and initiatives. The building industry is off to a good start with housing starts up compared to the same time period last year. An improving housing market prompts me to aim high where HBA membership is concerned. Led by Membership Chair, Lantz Day, this year’s membership goal is 1,000 members. Member recruitment, retention, and involvement are key elements in maintaining a healthy association. Now is the time to start preparing for our annual Membership Drives with a goal of 175 new members. NAHB’s Spring Membership Drive kicks off in May with triple Spike credits. You will earn triple Spike credits for every Builder or Associate member you recruit. Recruiting new members to the HBA is recognized and rewarded through the Spike Club. Participants are called Spikes and they are the most valued members of our association – just ask Francine Bandy, Joe Hoffman, Burr Kannady, or Mark Priess. Their recruitment and retention efforts along with other Spikes are the largest source of growth for the HBA. Spikes not only bring grassroots stability to our association, but they promote the development of our general membership and its leadership pipeline. They ensure that we remain true to our industry and the scope of interests we represent. Just consider the number of home building-related companies with whom you do business and the potential for new member recruits. Invite your prospects to attend an HBA meeting or events as your guest and encourage them to become a member. When I say “Membership Pays” it is a direct result of my active participation in HBA events or programs. The Home & Garden Show is the best volunteer opportunity the HBA has to offer given its intense community environment. You can, however, choose to participate in the annual Fishing Tournament, attend the Appetite for Construction fundraiser, be a Parade of Homes volunteer, express reciprocal thanks at the Builder and the Association Appreciation Nights, and receive more than you’ll ever give at the Ryal School Christmas Party. Councils and Chapters are a great place to get acquainted while learning more about the HBA. Participation maximizes your membership benefits and increases your personal and professional network. This year, my goals are Education, Workforce Development, and the Value of Membership. Peter Grant and John Madden are developing an education program that will not only enhance our member’s professional knowledge and technical abilities, but establish the HBA as a regional education hub. Members will increase their professional credibility by earning NAHB Designations while belonging to one of the nation’s most highly respected and widely known trade associations.
Vice President/Treasurer Peter Grant, Grant Homes Remodel & Restoration In our competitive marketplace, differentiation is the key to success and NAHB’s nationally recognized education programs offer cuttingedge programming. The recent addition of the NAHB BuilderBooks series to the Arvest Library not only supplements your educational training opportunities, but is an additional non-dues revenue resource for the HBA. When you join the HBA, you automatically become a member of all three levels of the NAHB federation: local, state, and national. That’s three memberships for the price of one. Each association provides a different resource, each benefitting from one another. This three-tiered structure ensures that our members receive the information, advocacy, education and networking that best suits their specific needs. NAHB provides strong voice in Washington in the form of advocacy and legal services, and through BUILD-PAC works to elect pro-housing, pro-business candidates who will defeat excessive regulations and defend affordable housing initiatives in Washington, just as the Oklahoma State Home Builders Association provides a strong voice at the state Capitol in Oklahoma City. Furthermore, your membership provides access to NAHB Expert Advisors who can address your specific business questions. Members have instant access to our distinguished economists, tax specialists, legal research staff, financial experts and regulatory and technical specialists. Last but not least, a direct benefit is the Affinity Program which provides valuable member discounts through NAHB’s Member Advantage Program. You receive cost saving discounts on vehicles, shipping, cell phone plans, computers, car rentals, office supplies and more. Whether you’re a Builder, Remodeler, or Associate, your HBA membership provides you with the tools you need to succeed! I’m looking forward to achieving our goals for 2016 and with your continued support we will exceed the milestones set for this year. If you have any comments, concerns or need additional information about HBA programs or events, feel free to contact me or an HBA Staff member. We are here to serve you and our association. Regards,
Brandon L. Jackson, President

By Executive Vice President/CEO Jeffrey Smith Happy Spring my friends! With the warming temperatures and blooming flowers, this is my favorite time of year. I, like many of you, have started working in my flowerbeds and doing that once a year spring cleaning. You always seem to find a few items in your spring cleaning that makes you stop and think about the past and some of the great relationships and memorable things you have done. I know the last 10 years of my life, several of those relationships have been made through the Home Builders Association and the memorable events we have. President Brandon L. Jackson has an initiative to promote the value of membership and while there are thousands of dollars that your membership’s benefits can save you, the most important value to me is that of friendships and the opportunity to network. More than 120 member volunteers recently helped produce our annual Tulsa Home and Garden Show with the most success the show has had in its 67 year history. As I walked the River Spirit Expo Center during the setup of the show, I was blown away at all the volunteers working side by side, with dirt in their nails and sweat on their forehead. I know for some this might have been your first experience with the Home and Garden Show, but for others they were returning for their 20th, 30th, and amazingly even 40th shows. The commitment level over such a long period of time is an example of the value that several of our members continue to receive in the form of life-long friendships. A special thank you to Janet Holt (2016 Show Chair), John Madden (2016 Show Vice Chair), the past chairs committee, show committee and staff for making this year’s show the most successful one to date. The proceeds from the Home and Garden Show allow for our association to have events year round that add to the value of your membership. Each month we have our General Membership Meeting and it was at this past February’s meeting where I remember an outstanding trumpet player (Pablo Perez), naked Barbie dolls, and a grown man in a diaper (CJ Medlin). Now if you weren’t able to attend I am sure you are wondering what kind of event we put on, but it was all in great competition to raise funds for our local PAC.
The event was a huge success, we raised over $900, and I received the best compliments for the entertainment value that the Builders, 40Below, Remodelers, and Associates Councils had with their Mardi Gras floats. Congratulations to the Remodelers Council for raising the most money and the Associates Council for the popular vote. This spring as you think about the great value in your membership, I would challenge you to invite a friend, coworker, or business colleague to join our association. May is a triple Spike month so if you sponsor a new member to join before May 20th, then you will receive 3 spike points per member. Once you have 6 spike points you are considered a Spike and that opens the door for another value in membership by attending the quarterly spike events. If you need more information on the Spike program or how many spike points you currently have, you can find a page later in this magazine with that information or contact Nikki Pauly, our membership director, at the office. The staff values each and every one of our members and if we can assist you in joining a committee or council, or direct you to which event you would enjoy the most, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. I feel that once you get involved with that first committee, you will see the true value in your membership. I hope you all enjoy this time of year and stop to smell the flowers! That’s the SCOOP for now, Jeffrey Smith

Housing Starts in Tulsa area Down for Month, Up for Year. Home construction in the greater Tulsa area remains steady, February data shows. Building permits issued in the metro region totaled 224 for the month, slightly below the 240 number posted in February 2015, according to the permit tracking service New Orders Weekly. The construction total for the first two months is 437, a jump of 15 over last year. “Things are stabilizing,” said Brandon Jackson, this year’s president of the Home Builder’s Association of Greater Tulsa. “We had a brief scare with the price of oil dropping. But with Tulsa’s diversified economy, I don’t think it really has had as big as impact as it’s had in the past. “After the shock was over, people were able to move forward and keep their plans intact.” February was the fourth consecutive month that permits have increased. The year-to-date total is at its highest — 437 — since 2013. Tulsa led February starts with 51, followed by Owasso with 27, unincorporated Rogers County with 23, unincorporated Wagoner County with 21, and Broken Arrow and Bixby, both with 20. Tulsa also tops the region in permits for the year, with 80.
“As long as the weather stays friendly with us, everything should fare pretty good,” Jackson said in a telephone interview. “Interest rates are still down. “The presidential race isn’t causing a big uproar, a big scare. People who are moving forward are pro-business and pro-housing, so we should not have any disruptions.”

In Loving Memory of John Kirkland On March 3, 2016, our dear friend and member since 1950, John Kirkland, passed away. Following are comments from long-time collegue Burr Kannady.
I first met John in 1970 when I joined the HBA. John had a great sense of humor and always referred to me as kid and so many others the same, I asked John one time how come he referred to most of us as kids & his reply was, we were all much younger than him, so therefore we were all kids. I never knew of John serving as chairman of hardly any committees but probably served on more committees than any other person. John never wanted to be in the spot light, but enjoyed helping others. The one committee sticks out in my mine is the membership committee which I chaired for 3 different terms & John always wanted to serve as leader of the retention portion of this committee which I’m glad he did, because I could always count on him to give it his best.
As most of you know when you signed up a member that membership needed to renew on their due date, John was always on the phone or going by to see them about their time to renew and usually got them to renew. The credit for this renewal went to the original sponsor, so John really just got the satisfaction of getting them to renew. He lived & breathed the HBA. During his last 90-days or so, I was fortunate to spend a lot of time with John and he shared a lot of memories with me that he had never shared before. Did you know prior to him serving in World War Two he was an ambulance driver in Tulsa? He would laugh when telling me this because his superiors in the military thought that since he had been an ambulance driver he had to know a little about medical issues. I never knew about all the 61 bombing missions he was involved in and the fact that he said he was always unsure if he would return from any of them. I want to personally thank all the HBA staff during his last several days with us for all the support and love shown to him and his family. Stacey, thanks for arranging all the media coverage that you did. This was something John was so proud of and talked about up to his final days. He was a Warrior & truly loved the HBA FAMILY. oklahoma outdoor living in style The audio and lighting clients desire
As the popularity of outdoor living grows, more and more Oklahomans are investing in an outdoor space to enjoy with friends and family. These enhanced outdoor areas add to the livable square footage of a residence, and take a business property to the next level in safety and curb appeal. Large items like outdoor kitchens, pools, patios and seating are commonplace when creating an outdoor living design. However, there are two tech items creating a huge “wow factor” in outdoor environments - lighting and audio design.
Consider the environment elements Oklahoma is a great place to live, but mother nature isn’t always the easiest to get along with. Oklahomans experience extreme temperatures, flooding, erosion and more! All of which can wreck typical outdoor systems and devastate a client’s budget with replacement costs. Selecting outdoor products that deliver on performance, while able to withstand hard environments is extremely important. “Highly durable products can withstand the intense Oklahoma weather and environment,” explained Ryan Sullivan, HBA member and owner of BlueSpeed, a local provider of outdoor technology. “For example, the lighting system we recommend to clients was originally developed for coastal areas where corrosion and storm activity is prevalent. Fertilizers, irrigation, salt from snow, acid rain, and decaying plant matter can all cause corrosion. When you use a system that withstands these factors, you aren’t throwing away a light fixture or entire system every few years. You are doing the earth and your wallet a huge favor.”
seleCt tried and true produCts that perform Find a product line with an impeccable track record of performance. For example, a quality audio system should seamlessly and discreetly integrate into surrounding trees and foliage, while eliminating dead zones in sound delivery. “The last thing you want is to disturb neighbors or have to shout to guests while entertaining on your outdoor patio. Our system uses satellite speaker technology and a below-ground subwoofer resulting in high quality, crystal clear sound that is the perfect volume throughout the entire back yard,” said Ryan.
look for design eleganCe Unfortunately, in many cases the audio and lighting you see is more “eyesore” than elegant. But gone are the days of bulky “rocks” with blaring volume. It is possible to utilize innovative new audio and lighting technology that looks amazing in commercial and residential architecture. 26
HOME BUILDING NEWS 2016
“Our landscape, holiday and waterfront lighting products give you the flexibility to plan and grow your outdoor lighting experience. You can create a lighting oasis by directing light where you want with low wattage bulbs that reduce electricity costs, and systems that you will not have to replace every couple of years due to poor design, said Ryan.
partner with an expert Installation is simple and quick when done by a professional team - which passes time and money savings on to clients! A lighting and integration expert can scale the design based on what clients want - leaving them happy with the end result. Plus, a residential and commercial automation expert can combine the outdoor technology with mobile smart devices for easy control.
BlueSpeed offers a free demo of their lighting and audio systems at their showroom, or potential customers can schedule the demo at their house or commercial property!
why it matters? Spring is a prime time for people to be thinking about enhancing their landscaping as they look forward to spending more time outside with friends and family. Builders need to be ready to discuss outdoor lighting and audio technology with clients who are building out a home or commercial space during this time. Partnering with a professional audio and lighting team will provide the highest quality solutions, and bank goodwill between builder and client.
Call to schedule a demo today!

Boquet Sales at Home & Garden Show Bloom Into Large Donation For Food Bank The HBA of Greater Tulsa partnered with Reasor’s and News on 6 during the 2016 Tulsa Home & Garden Show. Reasor’s floral department was on the scene throughout the entire event, allowing attendees to brighten up their homes and the lives of local children by purchasing bouquets and flowering plants for a $5 donation. 100 percent of the buy one, get one free ticket sales on Thursday evening of the show were also donated to the cause. The HBA Charitable Foundation contributed another 2680 boost the donation to an even $10,000. The proceeds were presented to the Food for Kids program, which provides nutritious, kidfriendly food to insecure students to take home on Friday after school. The Food Bank distributes 6,000 backpacks of food each week to students in preschool through high school in Tulsa County. Shortly after the show, the HBA and partners presented a check for $10,000. Reasor’s donated another thousand, bringing the grand total to an $11,000 donation to the Food For Kids Program.
“As 2016 Chair of the Tulsa Home and Garden Show, it was my privilege to work alongside Reasors, in raising money for our local Community Food Banks “Food for Kids “Program.I can’t think of a more worthy cause and am so proud that Tulsa HBA is a part of again giving back to our community,” said Janet Holt, a volunteer from Chinowth & Cohen Realtors.
