2021 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

President Jeff Starkweather Epic Homes

By HBA President Jeff Starkweather

Vice President/Treasurer Cahn Wiggs Brian D. Wiggs Homes

Playing Nice in the Sandbox Record building permits…limited supply of material…low interest rates…shortage of labor…building in a pandemic…uptight customers…rising prices…added pressure! What an exciting time to be in the building business. What can we all do to make things go smoother? We can all work together and have an understanding that we are not the only people on the planet. Playing nice in the sandbox is a term that goes back to elementary school. Elementary school is a good example of our society today. Most people look at their own situation and only their situation. In elementary school selfishness tends to be the root of conflict between kids. Kids want to play with what they want to play with and typically don’t have any consideration for other kids. When we were in elementary school and we first see the sandbox, we are really excited to get in there and play. When we start playing in the sandbox, we all of the sudden realize that there are other kids playing in the sandbox with us. There are different kind of kids that play in the sandbox like quiet kids, loud kids, kids that play in a group, sand kicker kids, kids that put sand in buckets and dump it everywhere and then the inevitable bully kid. The key to playing in the sandbox nicely together is to realize that everyone (except the bully kid) wants to just have a good time and play. No one in the sandbox is intentionally trying to make the other kids mad. I am currently seeing a little bit of elementary school in the building business. Selfishness and not having an understanding of the other person’s situation is escalating tension between builders, vendors, labor and customers. I sincerely believe that most people want to have a prosperous and peaceful life. Most people wake up in the morning and really want to do a good job for others. No one likes getting involved in conflict with each other but we do it again and again. What puts people in a situation where there is conflict? Conflict starts with a selfish viewpoint. We get in our own isolated bubble and

we don’t realize what others are dealing with. We need to all have a broader viewpoint of other people’s issues so we can all work together. The best way to work together is to be open and honest with each other. If there is a problem with supply then the supplier needs to give the best information, he can to the person needing the items. Honesty and clear communication are the key to helping each other through a difficult situation. Working together towards a common goal with a clear understanding of what other people are dealing with is the key to less stress and a more fulling life.

By Executive Vice President/CEO Jeffrey Smith

If you are like me you are probably tired of hearing the phrase “return to normal”. What is normal and how are things different today then when they were “normal”. One thing constant in our life is change and we have all become accustomed to adapting to that change and what might be the new normal. I am proud to say that the Tulsa HBA has not strayed far from what was considered normal prior to Covid19. Although we have missed seeing some our “normal” members at events, we have been hard at work to maintain a somewhat normal schedule throughout the pandemic. I recently had a conference call with HBA CEOs from around the country and realized how fortunate we are to have the ability to produce the events we have over the last 12 months. Most of their organizations have been shuttered to large gatherings and virtual meetings are now considered their new normal. Their members are starving for interaction with other businesses and the opportunity to promote their product. Although our current normal does require the use of face coverings, most everything else is similar to our pre-Covid19 events. Our members have been able to network and grow their businesses throughout the pandemic. Beginning last May, our councils have been meeting to provide quality education and networking opportunities for our members. I have seen members join during the pandemic, that are now fully engaged with the Association and their businesses have begun to blossom. Nowhere else in the country would that have been possible via only a few virtual meetings. Our councils continue to produce great events each and every month to appeal to all members. I invite you to engage, or reengage, with a council to receive the full value of your membership. Over the next 30 days we are planning programs on the Builders Warranty, marketing your business during and post Covid19, happy hours, and a Professional Women in Building Awards Ceremony. These are just a sampling of our council events, but showcase the variety. We are now in the middle of tournament season. For me that means sitting at a baseball field somewhere in Oklahoma, but for our members that could be at the Fishing tournament or one of our 5 golf

tournaments this year. By the time you read this the Fishing tournament at Broken Bow and the Golf Tournament at Meadowbrook will have occurred. But we still have our Owasso Chapter Golf Tournament at the Patriot, the Under the Lights Golf Tournament at LaFortune Par 3, the BuildPAC Golf Tournament at Forest Ridge, and the SW Chapter Virtual Golf Tournament at Golf Suites. If you like to compete, or have fun, and you enjoy being outside, please plan to attend one of our 2021 Tournaments. We have also been able to produce our large public events with great success. The 2020 Parade of Homes in July was well received from the public and several dozen homes were sold throughout the week. In March of 2021, we produced the Tulsa Home and Garden Show, and the vendors have never been so complimentary of the effort that was put forth for an amazing event. Now we turn our sight to the 2021 Tulsa Parade of Homes in July, the Tulsa Home and Outdoor Market in August, and the Home Remodeling Showcase in September. Please take advantage of one of these events to promote your product. Everything we have accomplished during the pandemic is a testimony to how strong our membership is and how willing our members are at giving their time, talent, and treasure. The goal on March 15, 2020 was to survive. We have not only survived, but we have thrived as an organization, and we have helped our members thrive throughout the pandemic. With the success that most of our members have seen over the last 12 months, I can only hope that we have already “returned to normal.” That’s the Scoop for Now, Jeffrey Smith HOME BUILDING NEWS 2021
